Hi friends, and welcome to
00:00:24.12\00:00:25.30
another edition of NEWSTART Now.
00:00:25.31\00:00:27.54
We have in our studio today
00:00:27.75\00:00:29.66
Ann Sampson.
00:00:29.72\00:00:31.60
Ann came to us
about 17 days ago with
00:00:31.72\00:00:35.03
a lot of different ailments.
00:00:35.12\00:00:36.54
I'd like to take a look at
00:00:36.57\00:00:38.09
that clip right now.
00:00:38.12\00:00:39.12
Could we look at that?
00:00:39.15\00:00:40.36
In 2003, I passed out
00:00:41.36\00:00:44.45
and didn't know why,
00:00:44.51\00:00:46.18
and I got sicker and
sicker during that week,
00:00:46.30\00:00:49.06
and my husband decided to
take me to the emergency room.
00:00:49.18\00:00:51.63
When they found
that I had lymphoma,
00:00:52.27\00:00:55.75
and they said I had bone cancer,
00:00:56.12\00:00:59.30
they started the
treatments right away.
00:00:59.69\00:01:01.84
And of course I'm
upset, and I'm crying.
00:01:02.09\00:01:05.39
It's like...
00:01:05.72\00:01:06.81
I just buried my
sister-in-law less than,
00:01:07.06\00:01:10.03
less than a year.
00:01:10.21\00:01:12.06
And she lived with me,
00:01:12.33\00:01:13.84
and it was just
00:01:14.09\00:01:16.48
more than I could
take at that time.
00:01:16.63\00:01:18.51
What I would like
to accomplish is to...
00:01:19.12\00:01:21.51
there's several things.
00:01:21.57\00:01:23.18
First of all, I'd like
to be taken off my meds,
00:01:23.51\00:01:25.78
because they make me sick,
00:01:26.33\00:01:27.81
and they make me
sleepy, and they make me tired,
00:01:28.15\00:01:29.87
and I have no quality of life.
00:01:29.88\00:01:31.60
The second thing
00:01:31.75\00:01:33.51
that I would want is
00:01:33.63\00:01:36.33
to be able to walk.
00:01:36.57\00:01:37.66
I was very
athletic as a young person,
00:01:37.67\00:01:40.15
and I played ball,
basketball, in high school.
00:01:40.24\00:01:42.36
and college, and that's
00:01:42.51\00:01:43.60
why I had to have
the knees replacement.
00:01:43.61\00:01:45.36
But I was very
active all my life.
00:01:45.51\00:01:47.39
And then for
this to happen to me,
00:01:47.48\00:01:49.87
it would be just,
00:01:50.51\00:01:52.27
to be able to go out and
just play with my grandkids,
00:01:52.51\00:01:55.09
to take them to
the park and run,
00:01:55.10\00:01:56.69
or to play ball,
00:01:56.72\00:01:57.75
that would be my second goal.
00:01:57.78\00:01:59.60
And my third goal
00:01:59.78\00:02:01.60
would be to lose weight,
00:02:01.63\00:02:03.33
and to get back to the
weight that I should be.
00:02:03.60\00:02:05.72
Welcome back
friends, and in our studio,
00:02:07.45\00:02:10.24
Ann - how are you?
00:02:10.39\00:02:12.12
I'm fine. - Welcome.
00:02:12.13\00:02:13.45
Thank you.
00:02:13.46\00:02:14.45
We have some
really fabulous results
00:02:14.46\00:02:18.24
that Ann's going
to share with us.
00:02:18.27\00:02:20.60
And I don't know
what's the top of your list,
00:02:20.61\00:02:24.12
but let's start with medication.
00:02:24.18\00:02:27.09
I know that when you came here
00:02:27.10\00:02:29.12
you were taking 9 different
00:02:29.30\00:02:31.42
or 10 different medications.
00:02:31.51\00:02:33.12
Is this true?
00:02:33.13\00:02:34.15
I was taking 9...
00:02:34.18\00:02:35.24
I was taking 7 different
medications, but I was taking
00:02:35.33\00:02:38.00
2 of them twice a day.
00:02:38.24\00:02:39.63
So 9 different times in the day.
00:02:39.75\00:02:42.69
Yeah, I was taking medication.
00:02:42.78\00:02:44.03
And I'm sure you're
taking at least 8 or 9 now.
00:02:44.09\00:02:47.30
No. I'm taking one now.
00:02:47.45\00:02:49.15
You're taking one now?
00:02:49.18\00:02:50.36
Yes, I'm taking one pill now.
00:02:50.37\00:02:52.30
You know, Ann, it just never
00:02:52.87\00:02:55.24
ceases to amaze me
00:02:55.45\00:02:57.48
how the Lord works.
00:02:57.69\00:02:59.36
And we have people
like yourself who come here
00:02:59.54\00:03:02.36
taking 9 or 10...
00:03:02.48\00:03:03.78
We had a guy taking
25 medications once!
00:03:03.81\00:03:07.00
I couldn't imagine.
00:03:07.01\00:03:08.15
I can't either.
00:03:08.16\00:03:09.33
But here you
are. Tell us about...
00:03:09.54\00:03:11.45
Tell us first of all about the
one medication you're taking.
00:03:11.60\00:03:14.60
The one medication I'm taking
is for congestive heart failure,
00:03:14.72\00:03:17.51
my cardiomyopathy.
00:03:17.52\00:03:19.06
I'll probably have to stay on
that for a little bit, not long.
00:03:20.87\00:03:24.09
But I was taken off some of
00:03:24.66\00:03:26.03
the other heart
medications I was on.
00:03:26.04\00:03:27.66
About four of
those I was taking away,
00:03:27.67\00:03:30.81
for the heart specifically.
00:03:30.84\00:03:32.84
And I just feel so much better.
00:03:33.36\00:03:36.06
I knew that I
was ill all the time,
00:03:36.42\00:03:38.72
and I didn't have
enough energy to do anything.
00:03:38.78\00:03:41.09
But then I found that
00:03:41.33\00:03:43.54
when I came here,
00:03:43.66\00:03:45.33
Doctor Lukens, going
through my meds and everything,
00:03:45.54\00:03:47.78
we were just
dropping them one by one,
00:03:47.81\00:03:50.48
and finally realized which one
00:03:50.66\00:03:52.48
was really
making me the sickest.
00:03:52.49\00:03:54.39
- And that was? That
was a pill called Coreg.
00:03:54.42\00:03:57.18
And it was making
me feel lethargic,
00:03:57.27\00:04:00.42
my shoulders were hurting,
00:04:00.45\00:04:01.69
my back, I was having pain.
00:04:01.75\00:04:03.69
So I was having the side
effects from the medication.
00:04:04.03\00:04:06.60
And I was just told before,
00:04:06.63\00:04:09.21
"Just keep taking
your meds," you know,
00:04:09.24\00:04:11.69
even with all my complaints.
00:04:11.75\00:04:13.51
So Doctor Lukens
really listened to me,
00:04:13.69\00:04:16.39
and that's what I
like about NEWSTART.
00:04:16.48\00:04:18.00
It's not just,
00:04:18.03\00:04:19.21
"I'll see you in 15 minutes
and you're out of my office."
00:04:19.42\00:04:22.72
It was like, I have a question,
00:04:22.81\00:04:24.81
let's talk about it.
00:04:24.87\00:04:26.00
Sometimes I was even like,
00:04:26.06\00:04:27.06
"Okay Doctor
Lukens, I gotta go walk."
00:04:27.07\00:04:28.84
And, "No, I gotta give you
a little more information."
00:04:29.00\00:04:31.21
And I really do appreciate
the support that I got from him.
00:04:31.36\00:04:35.09
You know, our previous
guest that we interviewed
00:04:35.57\00:04:39.39
said something very similar.
00:04:39.60\00:04:41.75
And his doctor at home,
00:04:41.87\00:04:43.87
back in
Missouri where he's from,
00:04:44.18\00:04:46.72
I think it was Missouri...
00:04:46.73\00:04:47.87
He said he'd go in
to visit his doctor,
00:04:48.24\00:04:50.36
which was my experience too,
00:04:50.37\00:04:52.06
and they'd take 10 or 15
minutes with you at best,
00:04:52.24\00:04:55.15
if they had the time.
00:04:55.51\00:04:57.06
But here, today,
00:04:57.24\00:05:00.06
I think it was Doctor DeRose
00:05:00.15\00:05:02.57
spent an hour
with this gentleman.
00:05:02.58\00:05:05.69
And how long were
your office visits?
00:05:05.70\00:05:09.00
When I go home,
00:05:09.42\00:05:10.72
when I'm at my doctor's office,
00:05:10.75\00:05:12.48
and my cardiologist
right now is a major...
00:05:12.49\00:05:14.87
My oncologist is just wonderful.
00:05:15.06\00:05:17.00
He spends long times with me.
00:05:17.03\00:05:19.00
But my cardiologist, right now
00:05:19.12\00:05:21.06
I don't even really see him
00:05:21.12\00:05:22.48
unless I'm
having a procedure done,
00:05:22.49\00:05:24.33
because I see his
physician assistant.
00:05:24.34\00:05:26.39
And sometimes, you know,
00:05:27.15\00:05:29.45
I just feel like I'm not...
00:05:29.63\00:05:31.33
nobody's listening
00:05:31.45\00:05:33.18
to how I'm really feeling.
00:05:33.24\00:05:34.60
"Oh, take this
pill, add this pill on.
00:05:34.72\00:05:37.09
It's gonna take
care of that problem."
00:05:37.15\00:05:38.69
And it doesn't.
But when I came here,
00:05:39.09\00:05:41.30
not only do I see
Doctor Lukens in the office,
00:05:41.57\00:05:45.48
and he sometimes
will spend a half an hour,
00:05:45.69\00:05:48.12
45 minutes with me,
00:05:48.13\00:05:49.21
whatever he feels like I need,
00:05:49.36\00:05:50.81
and I guess he looks at
me that day and kinda knows.
00:05:50.82\00:05:53.24
And we're just
struggling to help
00:05:53.27\00:05:56.21
my heart rate, it's very rapid.
00:05:56.22\00:05:57.81
I can walk
somewhere and it will be,
00:05:58.03\00:05:59.48
you know, a hundred, and
00:05:59.66\00:06:02.03
he just explained to me why.
00:06:02.36\00:06:04.84
And I really appreciate that.
00:06:05.24\00:06:07.69
Now I'm not worried about it
00:06:07.72\00:06:09.15
because I know it's a process.
00:06:09.27\00:06:11.15
It's not something that's
wrong, it's just a process.
00:06:11.24\00:06:14.72
Now you were also able
to eat with the doctor?
00:06:15.00\00:06:17.60
Oh yeah, and
walk with the doctor.
00:06:17.81\00:06:20.81
And walk with the doctor.
00:06:20.82\00:06:21.81
And so, aside from the 45 minute
00:06:21.82\00:06:25.60
visitation or
whatever, the appointments,
00:06:25.75\00:06:29.63
you got to spend 10 or
15 minutes walking with him,
00:06:29.75\00:06:33.48
a half hour to an
hour eating lunch,
00:06:33.60\00:06:36.00
and at those times you
got to ask a lot of questions.
00:06:36.18\00:06:39.00
Right, and he will just come up
sometimes and say, "You okay?"
00:06:39.03\00:06:41.51
And you know, "Do
you need anything,
00:06:42.00\00:06:43.78
or you have any questions?"
00:06:43.81\00:06:45.75
Or if I'm eating something,
00:06:46.12\00:06:47.66
even with the
dietician, if I have a question,
00:06:47.72\00:06:50.00
she's in the cafeteria,
00:06:50.15\00:06:51.45
so I can ask her about my diet.
00:06:51.63\00:06:55.06
And it's just, it's so relaxing,
00:06:55.21\00:06:58.45
because people tell you...
00:06:58.63\00:07:00.03
I had a doctor tell me
one time, "Just do vegan."
00:07:00.12\00:07:02.12
Okay. - What does that mean?
00:07:02.36\00:07:04.00
I go to Loma Linda.
00:07:04.06\00:07:05.15
He said, "Here's a
couple books. Read these books."
00:07:05.16\00:07:07.33
And I'm like, "Oh. Right.
00:07:07.48\00:07:09.15
I'm gonna read all those books?"
00:07:09.24\00:07:10.75
But when I came here,
00:07:10.81\00:07:13.06
now I really...
00:07:13.12\00:07:14.36
I mean, I've been vegetarian
when I was growing up,
00:07:14.37\00:07:16.39
quite a few years,
00:07:16.54\00:07:17.57
but I understand
now how it's done.
00:07:17.66\00:07:20.24
And I can eat it,
00:07:20.30\00:07:22.12
and still get the protein
and the vitamins that I need.
00:07:22.30\00:07:25.18
I eat two meals a day.
00:07:25.33\00:07:27.00
- Breakfast and
lunch? I don't eat at night.
00:07:27.30\00:07:30.03
And I'm not hungry! - No?
00:07:30.06\00:07:31.63
And when I get up in the morning
00:07:31.72\00:07:33.09
it's almost like,
"Oh, I have to eat?"
00:07:33.10\00:07:35.30
So I go walking before I eat.
00:07:35.57\00:07:37.60
But it's an experience
that would help anybody,
00:07:37.78\00:07:40.81
if you have
anything wrong with you,
00:07:40.87\00:07:42.72
or you just
need to come and just
00:07:42.84\00:07:45.00
get in touch
with yourself again.
00:07:45.09\00:07:46.75
This is the perfect place to be,
00:07:46.84\00:07:48.42
because everybody
is just very friendly.
00:07:48.51\00:07:51.87
You don't feel like....
00:07:52.12\00:07:53.30
When I walked in
first day, I was like,
00:07:53.33\00:07:55.00
"Oh, by myself, I
don't know anybody..."
00:07:55.01\00:07:57.54
But immediately, I felt at home.
00:07:57.63\00:08:00.54
When I walked through the
door, I just felt at home.
00:08:00.72\00:08:03.87
Now did you make
some friends here?
00:08:04.18\00:08:05.75
Oh yes, made
lots of friends here.
00:08:05.84\00:08:07.81
Lots of friends, a
lot of walking friends!
00:08:07.82\00:08:10.57
A lot of walking
friends, like little June.
00:08:10.66\00:08:12.84
Yes, June, uh-huh.
"You want to walk?"
00:08:13.12\00:08:15.63
Not really, but,
"Okay, let's go!"
00:08:15.75\00:08:18.06
You know, you've
just finished three miles.
00:08:18.07\00:08:20.09
She used to ask me.
"No, I don't want to walk!"
00:08:20.15\00:08:22.36
"Okay, let's go walk."
00:08:22.37\00:08:23.75
Because I knew it was...
00:08:23.78\00:08:24.81
She doesn't take
no for an answer.
00:08:24.82\00:08:26.48
And when I first got here,
00:08:26.57\00:08:27.75
I really needed
the encouragement,
00:08:27.76\00:08:29.30
because I didn't even
really know that I could walk.
00:08:29.39\00:08:31.30
I would go up 15
flights at my home,
00:08:31.42\00:08:34.21
and I'm at the top of the
steps just breathing hard.
00:08:34.33\00:08:37.15
So I texted my daughter the
first time I walked two miles.
00:08:37.33\00:08:39.84
I said, "I
walked two miles today!"
00:08:39.85\00:08:41.72
She texted me back and said,
00:08:41.84\00:08:43.36
"I'd love to be
a fly on the wall."
00:08:43.37\00:08:45.66
Because I just, I had no energy.
00:08:45.72\00:08:48.48
And it is...
Everybody that calls me says,
00:08:48.72\00:08:51.12
"Oh, you sound so great!"
00:08:51.13\00:08:52.60
- You do! Yeah.
00:08:52.72\00:08:53.72
When I watched you
on the first interview,
00:08:53.81\00:08:56.36
just a moment ago,
00:08:56.39\00:08:57.75
and now, there's
just a significant change.
00:08:57.81\00:09:01.45
Well, there's hope! - Yes.
00:09:01.57\00:09:03.24
And I know what
it is now. - Yes.
00:09:03.30\00:09:05.24
I know what it is now. - Yes.
00:09:05.30\00:09:07.60
I'd like to do a sermon on hope.
00:09:07.78\00:09:09.81
-Oh yes. Because it's just a...
00:09:10.18\00:09:12.45
During an interview
on 3ABN, by the way,
00:09:12.66\00:09:15.78
Shelley Quinn asked my wife,
00:09:15.87\00:09:19.03
"What did you
see that was going on
00:09:19.06\00:09:20.72
while Ron was going
through the NEWSTART program?"
00:09:20.73\00:09:24.42
She said,
"Shelley, I saw him have,
00:09:24.48\00:09:27.24
for the first
time, he had hope."
00:09:27.25\00:09:30.03
And that's what I
want our viewers to know,
00:09:30.36\00:09:33.21
that there is hope.
00:09:33.24\00:09:35.21
They don't have to live
like they're living now.
00:09:35.36\00:09:37.72
And you're not by yourself.
00:09:37.78\00:09:39.36
- Yes. You're not by yourself.
00:09:39.48\00:09:41.30
So what else? Is there cooking?
00:09:41.42\00:09:43.33
Oh, my creatine, my...
00:09:43.48\00:09:47.39
I have to tell you about this.
00:09:47.54\00:09:48.81
My creatinine is
pretty much normal now,
00:09:48.84\00:09:52.09
which is my
kidneys, they're doing great.
00:09:52.21\00:09:54.87
I'm holding my red cells,
00:09:55.06\00:09:57.27
because I have
lymphoma and leukemia,
00:09:57.30\00:09:59.33
and I'm just
holding those red cells,
00:09:59.45\00:10:01.63
and in fact, they went up.
00:10:01.66\00:10:03.36
Alright! - They went up.
00:10:03.54\00:10:05.24
I think one of the things
that I really enjoyed the most
00:10:06.54\00:10:09.57
was the hydrotherapy.
00:10:09.66\00:10:11.03
I enjoyed it because I knew
it was going to increase my...
00:10:11.06\00:10:13.69
- We're running
out of time. Okay.
00:10:14.21\00:10:16.54
I'm going to have to
say goodbye right now.
00:10:16.69\00:10:18.21
- Thank you very
much. Thank you for coming,
00:10:18.24\00:10:20.00
Friends, don't go
away! We'll be right back.
00:10:20.09\00:10:22.54
Well, you've done very well.
00:10:23.84\00:10:25.36
Do you have diabetes,
00:10:31.84\00:10:33.21
heart disease,
high blood pressure,
00:10:33.22\00:10:35.30
or do you weigh too much?
00:10:35.75\00:10:37.15
Hi, my name is Dr. Ing,
00:10:38.03\00:10:39.39
and I'd like to tell you
00:10:39.40\00:10:40.72
about our 18-day
NEWSTART lifestyle program.
00:10:40.73\00:10:43.69
It includes a
comprehensive medical evaluation
00:10:44.42\00:10:47.18
with laboratory studies
and an exercise stress test,
00:10:47.19\00:10:50.45
physician consultations,
00:10:51.00\00:10:52.63
culinary school,
00:10:53.36\00:10:54.54
and an opportunity to
walk on beautiful trails
00:10:55.09\00:10:58.03
in the foothills of the Sierras.
00:10:58.04\00:11:00.03
Your health is one of the most
00:11:02.09\00:11:03.51
important things
that you have. Don't wait.
00:11:03.52\00:11:05.54
Give us a call at:

00:11:10.78\00:11:12.12
Welcome back
friends, and in our studio
00:11:29.78\00:11:31.81
with us right
now is Doctor Lukens.
00:11:31.82\00:11:34.12
How are you? Man,
you've got a grip!
00:11:34.13\00:11:36.39
Very glad to be here again.
00:11:36.40\00:11:38.87
Talk about patience. - Yes!
00:11:39.06\00:11:42.54
And praise our Lord for the
healing that he gives all of us
00:11:42.69\00:11:47.69
just by simply
following some basic principles,
00:11:47.72\00:11:51.72
and that's what we're going
to be talking about, and Ann,
00:11:51.78\00:11:54.84
and the changes
that she's been through.
00:11:55.00\00:11:57.54
But tell us about
this cardiomyopathy
00:11:57.57\00:12:02.00
that she has had and
that she's been dealing with.
00:12:02.09\00:12:05.66
Well it's very interesting,
because she is a person
00:12:05.78\00:12:09.36
who had a heart
that was enlarging,
00:12:09.84\00:12:13.84
and she was actually
getting anginal pain.
00:12:14.21\00:12:17.33
And she works in
a cardiac situation.
00:12:17.45\00:12:21.06
It's very interesting,
because all of these
00:12:21.21\00:12:23.60
different tests and modalities
and everything are there.
00:12:23.69\00:12:28.12
And she kept
having this problem,
00:12:28.51\00:12:32.15
and they would do
angiograms on her,
00:12:32.27\00:12:34.48
and they would find eventually
that her arteries were open.
00:12:34.54\00:12:38.48
- And nothing was
showing up that would...?
00:12:38.84\00:12:41.42
Yeah, she wasn't having really
00:12:41.60\00:12:44.00
badly plugged-up arteries,
and so why all this pain?
00:12:44.24\00:12:47.57
Well, they find out
that she has a large,
00:12:47.87\00:12:50.84
kind of a, the
best way to describe it
00:12:51.12\00:12:52.84
would be a large, flabby heart.
00:12:53.03\00:12:55.06
And that's the reason
why she was swelling up,
00:12:55.15\00:12:58.45
and even when she came here
00:12:58.51\00:13:00.33
on all the
medications that she was on,
00:13:00.48\00:13:02.72
she was having trouble
when she was trying to exercise.
00:13:03.06\00:13:06.66
And that --
she'll tell you about it.
00:13:06.84\00:13:09.39
That is going away, and
she's thrilled about it.
00:13:09.42\00:13:12.36
Yes, yes.
00:13:12.45\00:13:14.09
What about the diabetes now?
00:13:14.12\00:13:15.69
I understand that she's no
longer taking the medication.
00:13:15.81\00:13:20.45
Well,
fortunately in her situation,
00:13:20.57\00:13:22.66
because diabetes is
such a terrible thing
00:13:22.69\00:13:25.72
on the small blood
vessels that are in the heart
00:13:25.73\00:13:29.27
and the brain and
the kidneys and so forth,
00:13:29.39\00:13:31.51
hers was early.
00:13:31.60\00:13:33.33
So she didn't have that
00:13:33.48\00:13:35.87
problem that she had been
struggling with for years.
00:13:36.21\00:13:39.51
Although a diabetic,
they say, on average may have
00:13:39.54\00:13:43.75
diabetes for about five
years before they finally
00:13:44.21\00:13:48.24
realize they have that,
00:13:48.48\00:13:50.48
and something goes
bad, like their eyes.
00:13:50.60\00:13:53.81
They can't see very well.
00:13:53.82\00:13:56.39
Sometimes that's just
the swelling of the lens
00:13:56.57\00:13:59.12
because the sugar is so high.
00:13:59.13\00:14:01.21
Or they might have
pain in their feet.
00:14:01.48\00:14:03.84
And she did have
some of the neuropathy,
00:14:04.03\00:14:07.09
but fortunately hers was early.
00:14:07.15\00:14:09.15
But it's interesting that,
00:14:09.36\00:14:10.69
coming back to this
cardiomyopathy thing,
00:14:10.70\00:14:13.12
Usually there's
about three different ways
00:14:13.63\00:14:16.06
that you get that.
00:14:16.09\00:14:18.42
One of the most commonly
thought is a viral situation,
00:14:18.72\00:14:24.27
and that's what Dr.
Robert Adkins blamed his on.
00:14:24.33\00:14:28.60
You also get it
from being an alcoholic.
00:14:29.03\00:14:34.84
You don't get the right
nutrition, and that's a problem.
00:14:35.30\00:14:39.18
But you also get it
from eating a poor diet,
00:14:39.30\00:14:43.72
having your tiny
little arteries plugged up.
00:14:44.21\00:14:48.18
Eating the
standard American diet
00:14:48.42\00:14:50.66
is eventually going to close up
those tiny, tiny little arteries
00:14:50.78\00:14:55.24
right at the level
of where the myocardium
00:14:55.27\00:14:58.57
or the muscle cells are.
00:14:58.63\00:15:00.30
They're starved
for oxygenated blood,
00:15:00.51\00:15:02.84
and then the heart will
get bigger and flabbier,
00:15:03.12\00:15:07.06
and it'll just
keep on going that way.
00:15:07.12\00:15:09.15
That's the way Doctor
Adkins' heart did, as well.
00:15:09.16\00:15:11.78
Now, apparently,
she was not exercising,
00:15:12.24\00:15:15.78
and this is something
we've introduced to her now,
00:15:16.03\00:15:19.39
and she's doing
much, much better.
00:15:19.40\00:15:21.33
Well, not exercising, yes.
00:15:21.45\00:15:23.87
But I mean, when you go
out and you try to do anything,
00:15:24.03\00:15:26.42
like just walk
across the room or whatever,
00:15:26.51\00:15:28.84
and you're short
of breath, that...
00:15:29.03\00:15:31.57
Yeah, she described how immobile
she was actually getting,
00:15:31.78\00:15:35.18
- She had a shortness of breath.
00:15:35.21\00:15:37.42
Yes she did, and
even when she came here,
00:15:37.60\00:15:41.39
with all the
medications that she was on,
00:15:41.60\00:15:43.72
she was still short of breath.
00:15:43.75\00:15:46.09
I think the other day...
She'll tell you about it.
00:15:46.15\00:15:48.42
I think she was able to
walk up to the water tower,
00:15:48.51\00:15:51.18
which is kind of the
"gold standard," you know.
00:15:51.19\00:15:53.60
And she was able to do that.
- That's about a mile walk,
00:15:53.66\00:15:56.48
from down, from the lodge
00:15:56.60\00:15:59.66
to the water tower
and back, isn't it?
00:15:59.67\00:16:02.03
But it's up -- that
the thing, you know.
00:16:02.04\00:16:03.27
When you're able to do the water
tower, then you've arrived.
00:16:03.28\00:16:06.60
When I came through the program,
00:16:06.61\00:16:08.57
I wasn't about
to do the water...
00:16:08.58\00:16:10.75
I couldn't even walk
around Half-Mile Loop,
00:16:10.78\00:16:12.75
let alone go up there.
00:16:12.81\00:16:14.54
So I can appreciate
those attempts to do that.
00:16:14.75\00:16:18.81
Yeah, there's happy,
happy thoughts that you get.
00:16:18.84\00:16:21.06
The other thing is
that, not everybody has this,
00:16:21.27\00:16:24.21
because I'll ask.
00:16:24.22\00:16:25.30
But when you're
on a beta blocker,
00:16:25.36\00:16:27.06
sometimes you have the
feeling that you're just,
00:16:27.33\00:16:31.54
you just can't
perform, you're just...
00:16:32.09\00:16:34.30
You feel tired,
you feel lethargic,
00:16:34.63\00:16:38.09
because it blocks the adrenalin
00:16:38.15\00:16:42.21
that our bodies normally use
00:16:42.33\00:16:47.33
for our heart to pump
faster and to pump stronger.
00:16:47.54\00:16:50.66
So when you start to get up,
00:16:50.84\00:16:52.54
your heart rate's going
to speed up a little bit,
00:16:52.60\00:16:55.45
and that's going to help you
with the adrenalin to do this.
00:16:55.72\00:16:59.60
And it blocks
that, so sometimes people
00:16:59.61\00:17:01.72
will really feel very lethargic.
00:17:01.81\00:17:07.03
And she was bothered by that,
00:17:07.18\00:17:09.39
so she's happy to be getting
off of these medications.
00:17:09.40\00:17:12.54
What about her weight?
00:17:12.78\00:17:14.30
And I know, we've
talked about this before.
00:17:14.48\00:17:17.39
The weight isn't the
most important thing,
00:17:17.54\00:17:20.30
but for those of us
coming through the program,
00:17:20.48\00:17:22.66
we want to lose a lot of weight.
00:17:22.67\00:17:24.24
And as you said
earlier before our interview,
00:17:24.27\00:17:28.24
You said, "You
know, people think that
00:17:28.25\00:17:30.42
because they lose
weight, they're going to look
00:17:30.45\00:17:32.15
like they did
when they were 20."
00:17:32.16\00:17:34.18
If we could do that, wow --
00:17:35.00\00:17:36.75
we'd have everybody
trying to lose weight!
00:17:36.81\00:17:38.51
Yeah, that would truly
be the fountain of youth.
00:17:38.60\00:17:40.81
Yeah, and sometimes
people, as they go along,
00:17:41.18\00:17:45.72
folks will -- and
this has happened,
00:17:46.09\00:17:49.27
folks will look at them and
say, "Are you feeling well?"
00:17:49.48\00:17:53.57
Almost like, "Do you
think maybe you're dying?"
00:17:54.48\00:17:59.48
You know, this kind of stuff.
00:17:59.72\00:18:01.66
And it's really sad,
because we're used to
00:18:01.87\00:18:04.63
seeing people a
little bit more corporal,
00:18:04.75\00:18:08.78
a little bit heavier.
00:18:09.09\00:18:11.39
And when you do lose
weight, unfortunately,
00:18:11.51\00:18:14.09
you lose it in your face,
00:18:14.24\00:18:16.24
and wrinkles show
up and stuff like that.
00:18:16.45\00:18:19.09
I don't want
anybody out there to say,
00:18:19.12\00:18:21.09
"Whoa, I'm not going to do this,
00:18:21.10\00:18:23.03
because I don't
want to look old,"
00:18:23.04\00:18:25.00
but that's part of it.
00:18:25.12\00:18:26.69
Well, some folks told me
I was looking rather lean
00:18:27.18\00:18:31.45
when I was losing
all the weight I lost.
00:18:31.48\00:18:34.06
And I think it
was you that said,
00:18:34.07\00:18:36.57
"Don't worry about
what these people are saying
00:18:36.72\00:18:39.51
about how you look.
Let's keep getting healthy."
00:18:39.57\00:18:43.00
Yeah, that's exactly right.
00:18:43.18\00:18:44.75
So, any recommendations
for people who are suffering
00:18:44.81\00:18:48.42
these same conditions as Ann?
00:18:48.43\00:18:51.39
Anything you can
tell them, our viewers?
00:18:51.60\00:18:55.60
It's going back to circulation.
00:18:55.87\00:18:59.60
If you have good circulation,
you can have good health.
00:19:00.39\00:19:05.48
If you have poor circulation,
00:19:05.57\00:19:07.60
you're going to
have poor health.
00:19:07.61\00:19:09.81
And that's just the way it is.
00:19:10.09\00:19:12.15
I'm the one that always
keeps coming back to that.
00:19:12.33\00:19:15.27
The tiny little
arteries will open up for you
00:19:15.51\00:19:18.60
when you're on the
vegan-vegetarian diet,
00:19:18.78\00:19:22.33
the simple, natural foods
as they come from the earth.
00:19:22.48\00:19:25.51
And when you do that,
00:19:25.60\00:19:27.69
and it starts within three days,
00:19:27.84\00:19:30.24
they start opening up,
00:19:30.51\00:19:32.06
then we see
these marvelous things,
00:19:32.24\00:19:34.21
and we keep talking about
that, I keep talking about it.
00:19:34.30\00:19:37.03
And when the circulation
goes into your heart,
00:19:37.24\00:19:39.78
and those things start
getting healthy again...
00:19:40.18\00:19:42.72
And we see this many, many
times with the cardiomyopathies.
00:19:42.87\00:19:46.63
In fact, most of
the time, I could say.
00:19:46.75\00:19:49.36
Eventually the
heart gets stronger.
00:19:49.60\00:19:51.60
I've had people that
are in the emergency room
00:19:51.72\00:19:55.21
two or three times a month,
00:19:55.24\00:19:57.15
and they're just struggling,
and after that it's a miracle.
00:19:57.30\00:20:01.09
It's a miracle of God's grace,
00:20:01.24\00:20:03.27
His healing power,
00:20:03.36\00:20:04.69
to do this because He loves you,
00:20:04.78\00:20:07.42
and He wants to
show you what He will do
00:20:07.54\00:20:09.87
when you follow the wonderful,
00:20:10.06\00:20:12.63
simple health
remedies that He's given.
00:20:12.69\00:20:15.24
Now, for our viewers,
00:20:15.69\00:20:18.00
you can certainly come
to our NEWSTART program.
00:20:18.06\00:20:21.30
Which, we have a
program each and every month
00:20:21.42\00:20:24.21
that lasts 18 days,
00:20:24.36\00:20:26.54
and we welcome
you to call us at:
00:20:26.66\00:20:29.39
Perhaps you can talk to
Doctor Lukens or myself,
00:20:33.06\00:20:36.00
or one of our guest
services representatives,
00:20:36.21\00:20:39.48
and get yourself
up here real quick
00:20:40.57\00:20:42.51
so we can help you, as well.
00:20:42.52\00:20:44.03
It's really neat
with Ann, you know,
00:20:44.18\00:20:46.33
Her face, I mean,
it looks healthier,
00:20:46.39\00:20:48.72
because the circulation
goes into her face, too.
00:20:48.81\00:20:51.42
And she's just happy!
00:20:51.57\00:20:54.27
She's just happy about this.
00:20:54.39\00:20:56.54
And I've been talking
with her here and there
00:20:56.87\00:20:59.24
since she's come
through the program,
00:20:59.42\00:21:02.00
and she seems to
be quite elated about
00:21:02.09\00:21:05.66
the progress that she's making.
00:21:05.81\00:21:08.00
We want to thank
you for that, Doc.
00:21:08.12\00:21:10.30
- Well, it's not me, for sure.
00:21:10.33\00:21:12.00
Well, you're there.
00:21:12.01\00:21:13.69
I want to thank you for
joining us here in the studio.
00:21:13.70\00:21:16.54
I love this. I
want people to realize
00:21:16.60\00:21:20.12
what can happen when you do it.
00:21:20.24\00:21:22.69
And thank you for
joining us, but don't go away!
00:21:22.72\00:21:25.39
We have an important
message for you right now.
00:21:25.40\00:21:28.84
Hello, and welcome
to NEWSTART at Home.
00:21:42.78\00:21:44.87
We're glad that you've
joined us from your home today,
00:21:44.88\00:21:47.24
and we're also glad today
to have in the studio with us
00:21:47.27\00:21:50.12
Dr. David DeRose.
00:21:50.36\00:21:52.03
He is a staff
physician here at Weimar,
00:21:52.15\00:21:54.66
at the NEWSTART
program, but he's also
00:21:55.00\00:21:57.06
a doctor of internal
medicine, which means he can
00:21:57.30\00:21:59.84
take care of sickness and
disease, the internal organs,
00:22:00.12\00:22:02.69
and he's a doctor
of preventive medicine,
00:22:02.84\00:22:05.27
how to prevent problems.
00:22:05.33\00:22:06.84
And today we're going to talk...
00:22:06.85\00:22:08.18
By the way,
welcome Doctor DeRose.
00:22:08.19\00:22:09.63
Thanks, Don.
00:22:09.64\00:22:10.84
We're going to talk
today about alcohol,
00:22:10.85\00:22:13.48
moderate drinking.
00:22:13.57\00:22:14.66
A lot of people have a
lot of opinions they share.
00:22:14.67\00:22:17.45
Some people even
use a Bible text.
00:22:17.48\00:22:19.36
"A little bit of wine is good
00:22:19.37\00:22:20.78
for the stomach's
sake," they'll say.
00:22:20.79\00:22:22.63
And they'll use that all to say,
00:22:22.72\00:22:24.27
"You have to tip a little bit to
00:22:24.30\00:22:26.78
do better and tip the
scales of health towards
00:22:26.84\00:22:30.81
something that's
positive." What do you say?
00:22:31.00\00:22:32.78
Well, we don't want
to get into a lengthy
00:22:33.06\00:22:35.78
biblical discourse today, Don,
00:22:35.84\00:22:38.00
but there are other people
taking the biblical record.
00:22:38.09\00:22:41.60
They recognize that some of the
ways we translate words today
00:22:41.66\00:22:45.84
was not necessarily the
intent of the Bible writers.
00:22:46.12\00:22:49.36
Wine, grape juice -- very same
word in the Greek, for example.
00:22:49.48\00:22:53.48
But having said that, let's
just talk about the science
00:22:53.69\00:22:57.00
and focus on this whole
issue of moderate drinking.
00:22:57.15\00:23:00.09
Some years ago, I
was at a gathering,
00:23:00.27\00:23:02.72
actually the largest
gathering of public health
00:23:02.78\00:23:04.81
and preventive medicine
professionals in the world --
00:23:05.00\00:23:07.21
the American Public Health
Association's annual meeting.
00:23:07.27\00:23:10.72
And they actually had a debate
00:23:10.78\00:23:12.27
where there were two experts
speaking about the dangers
00:23:12.33\00:23:15.72
of moderate
drinking, and two other experts
00:23:16.06\00:23:18.84
supposedly
speaking about the benefits.
00:23:19.06\00:23:21.12
Just framing it in
the way of a debate,
00:23:21.24\00:23:23.87
you'd think, well, it
must be pretty controversial.
00:23:23.88\00:23:26.24
But what I found
very interesting is
00:23:26.63\00:23:28.36
those siding with
alcohol were basically people
00:23:28.37\00:23:31.45
that were being paid
by the alcohol industry.
00:23:31.46\00:23:33.72
And they were trying to
tell us there at the convention
00:23:33.75\00:23:36.27
that alcohol was
good for your heart.
00:23:36.30\00:23:38.27
So they could sell more alcohol.
00:23:38.33\00:23:40.78
No doubt, but
actually there is some data
00:23:41.03\00:23:43.51
that suggests
the average American
00:23:43.52\00:23:45.60
with his or her poor fruit
and vegetable consumption habits
00:23:45.72\00:23:50.78
may actually get some
heart preventive benefit
00:23:50.87\00:23:54.15
from moderate drinking.
00:23:54.16\00:23:55.45
I'm not going to
disparage the research.
00:23:55.46\00:23:57.69
And so there is
some ground for this.
00:23:57.70\00:23:59.51
But Don, what most
people don't realize
00:23:59.63\00:24:01.60
and what the alcohol
industry has never said,
00:24:01.72\00:24:03.60
at least never in
any statement I've seen,
00:24:03.61\00:24:05.72
is that if you're eating
plenty of fruits and vegetables,
00:24:05.81\00:24:08.03
that alcohol does not
help your heart a bit.
00:24:08.12\00:24:10.33
We know this from the
Oxford vegetarian study.
00:24:10.48\00:24:12.87
They found those
individuals eating
00:24:13.06\00:24:15.06
lots of fruits and vegetables --
00:24:15.07\00:24:16.60
no benefit from alcohol,
00:24:16.63\00:24:18.51
but all the side
effects of alcohol.
00:24:18.63\00:24:20.81
Don, even if alcohol
helped everybody's heart,
00:24:21.03\00:24:24.45
if someone read the
product insert on alcohol
00:24:24.72\00:24:28.30
as a pharmaceutical,
00:24:28.31\00:24:29.84
- They would never
take it. They wouldn't!
00:24:30.00\00:24:31.63
Seventy-six million
people in the world,
00:24:31.87\00:24:34.60
according to the
World Health Organization,
00:24:34.61\00:24:36.39
have alcohol use disorders.
00:24:36.45\00:24:38.45
And you look at some of the
leading killers in the world,
00:24:38.60\00:24:41.66
things like
cirrhosis of the liver,
00:24:41.67\00:24:43.54
esophageal cancer, homicide...
00:24:43.57\00:24:46.84
You look at
things like epilepsy,
00:24:47.03\00:24:48.69
maybe not a
leading killer, but causing
00:24:48.72\00:24:50.66
a lot of what we call
morbidity, suffering...
00:24:50.72\00:24:52.75
Twenty to thirty
percent of all those
00:24:52.78\00:24:55.63
illnesses are
related to alcohol!
00:24:55.69\00:24:57.84
So moderate drinking,
while it might help your heart,
00:24:58.21\00:25:00.51
doesn't help your
head, and you lose
00:25:00.52\00:25:02.72
your ability to reason well,
00:25:02.87\00:25:05.03
and also a lot
of physical effects.
00:25:05.18\00:25:07.48
It's a huge problem.
00:25:07.72\00:25:09.57
A huge problem worldwide.
00:25:09.72\00:25:11.36
The World Health
Organization and other experts
00:25:11.37\00:25:13.54
are realizing this.
00:25:13.55\00:25:14.72
It's not a health habit.
00:25:14.73\00:25:16.12
And I would say, it really
is not going to help your heart
00:25:16.13\00:25:19.36
if you just hear the message
00:25:19.37\00:25:20.84
"Eat more
fruits and vegetables."
00:25:20.85\00:25:22.57
So in other words, a little wine
00:25:22.78\00:25:24.84
is not good for
the stomach's sake.
00:25:25.00\00:25:26.57
But I mean, I might
hasten to add on that text.
00:25:26.60\00:25:28.84
I recently read a book
that was looking at that text,
00:25:28.85\00:25:32.63
and in that text,
it's interesting that
00:25:32.87\00:25:35.09
that "little
wine" was like you said,
00:25:35.12\00:25:36.87
grape juice that
had been concentrated,
00:25:37.06\00:25:39.69
and it was concentrated and kept
00:25:40.03\00:25:41.72
so it could be
reconstituted later.
00:25:41.75\00:25:43.69
And it is true, it
will calm your stomach down.
00:25:43.78\00:25:46.00
But this was not alcohol.
00:25:46.09\00:25:47.42
It wouldn't go
along with the positive.
00:25:47.57\00:25:50.12
So a little wine of
the right kind is good,
00:25:50.15\00:25:52.84
which would be
grape juice. - Exactly.
00:25:53.00\00:25:55.03
But, what you're saying is,
00:25:55.04\00:25:56.33
if it's got alcohol in it,
00:25:56.34\00:25:57.66
a little dab will not
do you. It's not good.
00:25:57.78\00:26:00.84
How much alcohol
do we let pilots drink
00:26:01.12\00:26:03.33
while they're
flying a plane? - None.
00:26:03.34\00:26:05.09
They say, what
is it? Eight hours
00:26:05.10\00:26:06.69
from the bottle to the throttle?
00:26:06.70\00:26:08.33
It might be 72.
00:26:08.34\00:26:09.42
They want their blood
alcohol level to be 0, the FAA.
00:26:09.51\00:26:12.30
And if it's important
for a pilot flying a plane,
00:26:12.42\00:26:14.87
how important is
it for us spiritually
00:26:15.00\00:26:16.60
in all the decisions
we make? - That's right.
00:26:16.66\00:26:18.69
We've been talking
with Dr. David DeRose,
00:26:19.06\00:26:21.36
and this has been
a fascinating study,
00:26:21.37\00:26:23.63
but I'm sure you
might want to look
00:26:23.64\00:26:25.24
for more
information on our website:
00:26:25.25\00:26:26.75
We're glad you joined us today,
00:26:28.63\00:26:29.78
and I hope you
take this seriously that
00:26:29.81\00:26:31.48
moderate alcohol of any
kind is just not the answer.
00:26:31.60\00:26:35.18
Thank you for joining us,
00:26:35.19\00:26:36.24
and thank you, Doctor
DeRose, for joining us.
00:26:36.30\00:26:38.09
We hope that as a
result of today's program
00:26:38.21\00:26:40.45
you have a new start.
00:26:40.48\00:26:42.21
Modern views of
evolution stem all the way back
00:26:49.75\00:26:52.36
to theories
developed in the mid-1800s.
00:26:52.39\00:26:54.78
Out of the same time
period came ideas that shape
00:26:55.45\00:26:58.75
our educational system today.
00:26:58.78\00:27:01.03
The Common School
Movement, for example,
00:27:01.57\00:27:03.84
saw schools more like a factory,
00:27:04.30\00:27:06.21
with students blindly
memorizing instruction
00:27:06.22\00:27:08.87
rather than
thinking for themselves.
00:27:09.00\00:27:10.87
Their curriculum was
rigid and theoretical.
00:27:11.42\00:27:13.87
Instead of being
flexible and practical,
00:27:13.88\00:27:16.72
it was designed to
conform the individual
00:27:16.87\00:27:19.36
into a specific ideological mold
00:27:19.45\00:27:22.00
that fit the needs
of an old industrial era
00:27:22.24\00:27:24.69
long since passed.
00:27:24.70\00:27:26.18
Just like our view of
creation in six literal days,
00:27:27.45\00:27:30.69
we believe the Bible contains
an educational blueprint
00:27:30.78\00:27:34.78
radically different
from the one we see now.
00:27:35.15\00:27:37.51
Well, friends,
that's it for today.
00:27:50.78\00:27:52.36
I hope you enjoyed the show.
00:27:52.37\00:27:54.21
But pick up that phone
right now and give us a call at:
00:27:54.51\00:27:56.84
