I try to get in like 00:03:30.15\00:03:33.15 4 or 5 different short walking periods. 00:03:33.18\00:03:36.06 because that's what my exercise counselor told me to do 00:03:36.24\00:03:39.87 to increase my walking, 00:03:39.88\00:03:41.45 and it's helped so much. 00:03:41.54\00:03:43.06 Last year I tried to get, 00:03:43.07\00:03:44.30 when I was feeling a little bit better, 00:03:44.33\00:03:45.84 tried to get my walking up, 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.00 and I ended up taking about 3 months to get up to 2 miles. 00:03:47.12\00:03:51.00 And I've been here.... 00:03:51.18\00:03:52.66 Let's see, I got up to 2 miles in 00:03:52.67\00:03:54.81 somewhere near the end of the first week 00:03:55.27\00:03:57.39 that I was here, just doing it that way. 00:03:57.40\00:03:59.06 So it's been very helpful. 00:03:59.33\00:04:00.72 Besides walking, there's cooking classes, 00:04:01.00\00:04:04.27 there's rock painting, if you want to do that. 00:04:04.48\00:04:08.03 We've had puzzles, 00:04:08.21\00:04:09.33 had a lot of fun hanging out with the other guests. 00:04:09.34\00:04:11.39 There's lots of lectures, very informative lectures, 00:04:11.57\00:04:15.12 - Have you made new friends? That was one of my favorites. 00:05:09.48\00:05:12.45 It is, and I think that's one of the ones that 00:05:12.60\00:05:14.63 has helped me a lot as far as pain reduction. 00:05:14.64\00:05:17.48 And where were you feeling this pain? 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.57 Now tell us a little... 00:05:20.78\00:05:22.06 I know you were telling me something about 00:05:22.07\00:05:23.42 the numbness in your fingers and your feet. 00:05:23.43\00:05:26.72 When I was telling you about 00:05:26.78\00:05:28.75 the sores and the numbness in my hands and feet, 00:05:28.76\00:05:31.12 I didn't tell you that I only realized those 00:05:31.30\00:05:35.18 after the pain went away. 00:05:35.19\00:05:37.51 You know how they have a pain scale at the doctor's office 00:05:37.66\00:05:41.36 that goes from, you know... 00:05:41.45\00:05:42.75 One is you feel hardly any pain, 00:05:42.84\00:05:45.42 and 9 or 10 is you can't hardly bear it anymore. 00:05:45.54\00:05:49.00 Well, I was probably when I got here 00:05:50.09\00:05:52.21 somewhere around a 6 or a 7 on the pain scale. 00:05:52.24\00:05:54.78 The main, most painful areas were usually 00:05:55.12\00:05:59.00 my neck and shoulders and back. 00:05:59.15\00:06:01.27 I had a really bad spot in my low back. 00:06:01.36\00:06:04.21 But as I started walking we found that 00:06:04.30\00:06:07.75 I would start to ache really bad in my legs. 00:06:08.00\00:06:12.60 And that was one of the reasons 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.09 why I had to stop my stress test. 00:06:14.10\00:06:16.06 And through the hydro treatments... 00:06:16.33\00:06:19.87 When they heard that the walking hurt, 00:06:20.06\00:06:22.03 they just gave me a different kind of a treatment. 00:06:22.12\00:06:24.09 They did this thing called leg contrasts. 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.00 And that was amazing. 00:06:26.21\00:06:28.24 The first time I had a hydro, 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.27 it lasted for about 15 minutes that I was 00:06:30.33\00:06:33.75 extremely lowered in pain. 00:06:34.12\00:06:37.60 I was probably down at a 4. 00:06:37.72\00:06:39.30 And then it came back. 00:06:39.33\00:06:41.36 And then each time it went longer 00:06:41.45\00:06:43.39 and longer that I had less pain. 00:06:43.42\00:06:45.72 And now, if I had to tell you what my pain scale was, 00:06:46.18\00:06:49.12 do you think you could guess? 00:06:49.13\00:06:50.54 No. What is it? 00:06:50.57\00:06:52.51 Today it's about a 1 or a 2. 00:06:52.52\00:06:54.21 Really? You've checked my eyes on several occasions. 00:13:05.30\00:13:08.33 And I want to get right into this 00:13:08.57\00:13:10.72 interview that we did with Renee. 00:13:10.73\00:13:12.84 Tell us a little bit about how you, as a doctor, 00:13:13.30\00:13:18.72 were able to help facilitate her change. 00:13:18.75\00:13:23.51 Well, fibromyalgia is a condition which, 00:13:23.84\00:13:27.09 when I went to medical school, 00:13:27.12\00:13:28.54 we never heard about. 00:13:28.63\00:13:30.15 And in the last 20 or so years, 00:13:30.39\00:13:33.54 20 to 25 years, it's something that has been recognized. 00:13:33.69\00:13:37.57 Called it the fibromyalgia syndrome I guess, 00:13:37.66\00:13:40.75 and that's because the patients, they have pain, 00:13:40.81\00:13:43.54 and the pain is real. 00:13:43.72\00:13:45.09 And they check and examine the patients, 00:13:45.12\00:13:49.51 and you look for physical causes of the pain, 00:13:49.57\00:13:53.03 and they rule out all the possible causes. 00:13:53.09\00:13:57.03 The patients still have pain, and they really haven't found 00:13:57.09\00:13:59.54 what we call any physical or organic cause. 00:13:59.55\00:14:02.33 But when we work with patients like this 00:14:02.63\00:14:06.63 in our experience here at Weimar, we've found that 00:14:06.64\00:14:09.15 with the NEWSTART-type program, 00:14:09.42\00:14:11.63 nutrition, exercise, water, 00:14:11.69\00:14:13.54 sunshine, temperance, air, 00:14:13.57\00:14:15.12 rest, and trust in God, 00:14:15.13\00:14:16.60 and nutrition being a plant-based diet, 00:14:16.63\00:14:20.45 whole plant foods, 00:14:20.51\00:14:22.03 that with the hydrotherapy and the massage 00:14:22.04\00:14:26.03 and the gentle exercise, 00:14:26.09\00:14:27.48 there's significant dramatic improvement. 00:14:27.78\00:14:29.72 We see it time and time again. 00:14:29.73\00:14:31.66 Patients come here with many different types of medications, 00:14:31.75\00:14:35.36 and so much pain, 00:14:35.37\00:14:37.18 and by the time they get to the end of the program, 00:14:37.57\00:14:40.27 the pain is either gone or it's... 00:14:40.39\00:14:42.78 The patients are just like, they're walking, 00:14:43.27\00:14:45.66 and they may have a very little bit left. 00:14:45.87\00:14:47.72 It's just remarkable when you 00:14:47.81\00:14:51.42 follow the rules of health 00:14:51.63\00:14:53.84 and you obey the rules of health, 00:14:54.09\00:14:56.00 that you can confidently ask the Lord, say, "Lord, 00:14:56.03\00:14:59.06 please provide the blessings 00:14:59.21\00:15:01.15 that come with following Your rules." 00:15:01.16\00:15:03.81 And we see it. 00:15:04.09\00:15:05.78 And the people are just overjoyed with the response. 00:15:05.84\00:15:08.51 You can see that in Renee! 00:15:08.54\00:15:09.84 I mean, when I first met her 00:15:10.00\00:15:12.21 during our first evening, 00:15:12.30\00:15:16.30 when I get to meet the guests and we talk to them 00:15:16.45\00:15:19.51 and we give a few examples of patients, 00:15:19.84\00:15:22.00 she sat in the back of the room 00:15:22.12\00:15:24.18 and she was there very quiet, 00:15:24.24\00:15:26.18 and she raised her hand and said, "Well, 00:15:26.27\00:15:29.03 have you had any experience 00:15:29.42\00:15:31.27 working with people with fibromyalgia?" 00:15:31.39\00:15:34.15 because this was her concern. 00:15:34.21\00:15:35.60 And I said, "Yes, we have." 00:15:35.78\00:15:37.51 And the really wonderful thing about it is 00:15:37.54\00:15:40.36 that the patients who've come here with fibromyalgia, 00:15:40.37\00:15:43.42 with this type of approach, 00:15:43.51\00:15:45.69 when they leave, like you said, 00:15:45.78\00:15:47.69 80 to 90 percent of them have almost no pain, 00:15:48.00\00:15:51.03 and the others, it's so dramatically reduced 00:15:51.24\00:15:55.12 they're just overjoyed and really very happy. 00:15:55.15\00:15:57.18 And again, we've seen this happen to her. 00:15:57.39\00:15:59.39 It's slow, but sure, steady progress. 00:15:59.60\00:16:02.15 Well, she looks like a different person. 00:16:02.33\00:16:04.54 - Oh, she is! I want to talk-- 00:16:39.60\00:16:40.87 because we don't have a lot of time left, 00:16:40.88\00:16:42.84 but I want to talk briefly about the seizure. 00:16:43.09\00:16:45.30 Were you able to identify 00:16:45.57\00:16:48.48 in any way, was that seizure 00:16:48.51\00:16:51.36 part of a panic attack? 00:16:51.48\00:16:53.39 Were they related? - We really don't know, because 00:16:53.45\00:16:55.03 I don't know that she's ever 00:16:55.27\00:16:57.09 had a work-up to evaluate whether or not she had seizures. 00:16:57.15\00:17:00.42 That was her interpretation. 00:17:00.57\00:17:03.69 So that's something that hasn't been determined, 00:17:03.84\00:17:06.33 but as far as she's concerned, 00:17:06.42\00:17:08.57 after she's been here she really had 00:17:08.72\00:17:11.06 essentially nothing like that. 00:17:11.07\00:17:12.84 I think maybe she had one episode, 00:17:13.09\00:17:15.21 but since then she's done very, very well. 00:17:15.30\00:17:17.51 Now I know panic attacks are very real 00:17:17.72\00:17:21.39 out there in the world. 00:17:21.45\00:17:23.39 Maybe they are cousins to depression or such, 00:17:23.66\00:17:27.87 but is there something you can tell us about panic attacks? 00:17:28.03\00:17:31.12 First of all, how is she doing with panic attacks? 00:17:31.18\00:17:35.15 Secondly, what we can share with our viewers 00:17:35.21\00:17:38.78 that may assist them. 00:17:38.84\00:17:40.48 Well, the only one that I know of that she experienced 00:17:40.69\00:17:45.75 was right when she initially came here. 00:17:45.76\00:17:48.27 That was kind of my introduction to her. 00:17:48.33\00:17:51.21 And I saw this individual, 00:17:51.27\00:17:53.81 so I asked what happened, 00:17:54.00\00:17:56.75 and later on it was related to me that this individual 00:17:56.87\00:17:59.63 was having a panic attack, 00:18:00.00\00:18:02.45 and that was it. 00:18:02.48\00:18:05.09 After she's been here now the two and a half weeks, 00:18:05.39\00:18:09.27 she's never had another one and she's done wonderfully well. 00:18:09.33\00:18:12.00 Panic attacks I guess are a person's reaction to 00:18:12.18\00:18:15.27 something that causes stress or anxiety, 00:18:15.54\00:18:19.54 and that's the response to it. 00:18:19.60\00:18:21.81 And the depression. Has she had any bouts of depression? 00:18:22.33\00:18:26.06 She didn't look depressed to me 10 minutes ago here! 00:18:26.07\00:18:29.18 No, no. 00:18:29.21\00:18:31.09 I mean, many people have 00:18:31.18\00:18:34.39 mild forms of depression and so on, 00:18:35.12\00:18:38.33 but in my interaction with her 00:18:38.39\00:18:41.12 that wasn't observable, 00:18:41.24\00:18:43.75 Now, I have a question, 00:18:46.36\00:18:48.75 because I have a belief about our food that we eat. 00:18:48.84\00:18:52.57 I am a total vegan, 00:18:53.00\00:18:55.09 meaning I have no animal product to my knowledge. 00:18:55.10\00:18:58.27 I don't choose to have it. 00:18:58.42\00:19:00.03 But I've seen in my own experience 00:19:00.09\00:19:04.51 that when I came here I was depressed. 00:19:04.72\00:19:07.39 That depression went away 00:19:07.57\00:19:09.48 when I stopped drinking alcohol, 00:19:09.54\00:19:11.33 I stopped eating meat, 00:19:11.42\00:19:12.66 stopped eating the Standard Amerian Diet, 00:19:12.75\00:19:16.33 as you call, SAD. 00:19:16.36\00:19:18.60 Is there a relationship with food and depression? 00:19:18.81\00:19:22.78 There may be, but there's probably 00:19:23.18\00:19:25.66 even a stronger relationship with exercise and activity. 00:19:25.67\00:19:29.12 Because exercise is a natural anti-depressant. 00:19:29.33\00:19:33.33 It's also a natural tranquilizer. 00:19:33.39\00:19:36.06 So going back to Renee, 00:19:36.15\00:19:37.87 a regular exercise program is 00:19:38.27\00:19:40.81 going to help her to be more calm, 00:19:40.82\00:19:42.54 less problem with the panic attacks. 00:19:42.55\00:19:44.84 And if she happens to be depressed, 00:19:45.06\00:19:46.69 it's a natural anti-depressant. 00:19:46.70\00:19:48.24 It works much better than any anti-depressant. 00:19:48.30\00:19:50.69 So exercise is a really important part 00:19:50.75\00:19:53.18 of a person's overall health program. 00:19:53.19\00:19:55.63 We hear about the runner's high, 00:19:55.84\00:19:57.60 and you're referring to those endorphins 00:19:57.66\00:19:59.81 that the brain releases, 00:19:59.87\00:20:01.36 and that actually is like an opiate 00:20:01.48\00:20:03.54 that makes our body feel better? 00:20:03.60\00:20:05.27 Well, I don't know if exercise does... 00:20:05.48\00:20:07.87 I know running does that. 00:20:08.18\00:20:09.63 But the general walking does something very good 00:20:10.06\00:20:12.54 which helps to promote well-being, 00:20:12.63\00:20:14.30 and that's important. 00:20:14.31\00:20:15.63 Doctor Ing, I want to thank you for joining us in our studio. 00:20:15.66\00:20:18.72 And folks, thank you for joining us. 00:20:19.09\00:20:21.57 Don't go away. 00:20:21.72\00:20:22.84 We have an important message for you following. 00:20:23.09\00:20:26.45 Hi, and thank you for joining us today. 00:20:40.45\00:20:42.66 Today we have Doctor DeRose, 00:20:42.84\00:20:44.54 and I am very excited to hear 00:20:44.63\00:20:45.81 what he has to share with us today 00:20:45.82\00:20:47.21 about the Sabbath. 00:20:47.30\00:20:48.30 This study is very cool, and I can't wait 00:20:48.31\00:20:49.60 to hear what you have to say about this, 00:20:49.61\00:20:51.51 so let's just jump right in. 00:20:51.63\00:20:53.12 Well Cathy, I mean, you've got it. 00:20:53.24\00:20:54.66 It is very cool, to use the vernacular. 00:20:54.67\00:20:57.30 It's a study. It's not a brand-new study. 00:20:57.39\00:20:59.06 It was published back in 2001. 00:20:59.07\00:21:01.00 A couple of researchers at Ben-Gurion University in Israel 00:21:01.12\00:21:05.84 looked at mortality rates 00:21:05.87\00:21:08.24 and how they varied by day of the week. 00:21:08.39\00:21:10.39 Is that making sense so far? 00:21:10.40\00:21:12.12 You know, so Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... 00:21:12.21\00:21:14.60 What day of the week? 00:21:14.61\00:21:15.60 Are people dying more on one day than another? 00:21:15.61\00:21:17.54 The fascinating thing they found in this study done in Israel 00:21:17.81\00:21:21.27 is that when the Sabbath came, 00:21:21.57\00:21:24.63 Friday and then Saturday, the Bible Sabbath, 00:21:24.72\00:21:27.69 death rates, mortality rates, dropped dramatically 00:21:28.03\00:21:31.48 over the hours of the Sabbath, 00:21:31.75\00:21:33.09 and then they picked back up again 00:21:33.30\00:21:34.51 as you get into Sunday and Monday. 00:21:34.63\00:21:35.84 That's amazing. - It really is amazing! 00:21:35.85\00:21:37.51 What's amazing about it though is this was not 00:21:37.72\00:21:40.33 a study that found the same relationship 00:21:40.34\00:21:42.54 for everyone in the population. 00:21:42.63\00:21:44.42 Not everyone? 00:21:44.72\00:21:45.72 They only found it was true of the Jews. 00:21:46.09\00:21:48.39 You see, in Israel, 00:21:48.72\00:21:50.81 the seventh day Sabbath, 00:21:50.84\00:21:52.51 from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday-- 00:21:52.52\00:21:55.03 that Saturday, if you will-- 00:21:55.04\00:21:56.81 is a national holiday. 00:21:56.82\00:21:59.06 For everyone! 00:21:59.12\00:22:00.33 So the non-Jews are off just like the Jews. 00:22:00.39\00:22:03.06 But only the Jews got the benefit 00:22:03.07\00:22:06.15 as far as this decrease in mortality 00:22:06.36\00:22:09.21 over the hours of the Sabbath. 00:22:09.30\00:22:11.12 Now, did they cite all the reasons for this? 00:22:11.24\00:22:13.00 What are they saying? 00:22:13.01\00:22:14.12 Well, you're exactly right, I mean, 00:22:14.30\00:22:15.36 as a researcher myself 00:22:15.51\00:22:17.03 I'm saying, "Well, come on, what's going on here? 00:22:17.04\00:22:18.60 Maybe it's because the Jews aren't working. 00:22:18.61\00:22:21.84 You know, they're just sitting at home." 00:22:21.85\00:22:23.69 Actually, that wasn't it, 00:22:23.70\00:22:25.12 because they looked at the causes of death. 00:22:25.27\00:22:27.06 It was not just less accidents. 00:22:27.07\00:22:30.69 Especially things like stroke 00:22:30.70\00:22:33.72 dramatically decreased over the hours of the Sabbath. 00:22:33.81\00:22:37.24 In fact, as you look at the data, 00:22:37.30\00:22:39.27 what it suggests is that there is something 00:22:39.28\00:22:41.84 about setting aside this sacred day, 00:22:42.00\00:22:47.12 honoring this day that God has set apart, 00:22:47.36\00:22:49.33 that somehow makes a difference 00:22:49.45\00:22:51.72 as far as your physical health. 00:22:51.75\00:22:54.12 Well, anything to do with their diet? 00:22:54.42\00:22:55.81 Did it have anything to do with what they eat? 00:22:56.06\00:22:57.57 Obviously they do eat something differently. 00:22:57.63\00:22:59.06 Yeah, some of those things are hard to tease out. 00:22:59.30\00:23:01.33 And you could say, Well, were they eating differently? 00:23:01.36\00:23:04.12 Is it the social connectiveness? 00:23:04.15\00:23:05.63 In fact, the researchers talk about 00:23:05.66\00:23:07.75 some of the social effects and how the Sabbath 00:23:07.76\00:23:10.24 is part and parcel of Jewish culture. 00:23:10.25\00:23:12.42 But I think it just begs this fascinating 00:23:12.45\00:23:15.00 dialogue that we're having 00:23:15.01\00:23:16.54 about how medical researchers are actually finding 00:23:16.55\00:23:19.48 that when a community, when a people, 00:23:19.69\00:23:22.00 keep the Sabbath, 00:23:22.06\00:23:24.39 there's some kind of special blessing with it. 00:23:24.69\00:23:26.36 And it goes beyond just those weekly benefits, 00:23:26.63\00:23:29.81 because other research has looked, 00:23:29.84\00:23:31.60 for example, at Orthodox Jews, 00:23:31.61\00:23:33.48 and find that they have substantially lower death rates 00:23:33.49\00:23:36.45 across the board when it comes to a number of leading killers. 00:23:36.48\00:23:40.09 And again, some researchers have said, 00:23:40.24\00:23:42.30 "Perhaps some of the reason, some of the explanation, 00:23:42.36\00:23:45.57 is keeping the Sabbath, taking a day apart 00:23:45.58\00:23:48.63 and reflecting on God and spiritual things. 00:23:48.72\00:23:51.18 Stepping back from the cares of life, 00:23:51.19\00:23:54.84 and really focusing on the Creator. 00:23:55.15\00:23:57.36 And just having that time of quiet rest, 00:23:57.45\00:23:59.60 the body knows when to heal. 00:23:59.66\00:24:01.15 It's amazing. 00:24:01.30\00:24:02.48 You know, the interesting thing about the Sabbath 00:24:02.49\00:24:04.72 from a medical perspective, 00:24:04.73\00:24:06.00 is there are so many lines of insight 00:24:06.24\00:24:08.00 that suggest that really God created us 00:24:08.06\00:24:11.21 with a weekly rhythm. 00:24:11.22\00:24:13.42 And if you look at all the phenomena in life 00:24:13.43\00:24:16.63 by which we measure time, 00:24:16.64\00:24:18.06 whether it's the day or the month 00:24:18.12\00:24:20.84 or the year, they all have some astronomical 00:24:21.00\00:24:24.15 planetary significance, except for the week! 00:24:24.18\00:24:27.63 Societies have experimented with something 00:24:28.15\00:24:30.21 other than a seven-day week, 00:24:30.22\00:24:31.54 but it just doesn't seem to work. 00:24:31.66\00:24:33.84 Our Creator knew we needed a weekly cycle, 00:24:33.87\00:24:37.18 and He knew that we needed one day off for Him. 00:24:37.21\00:24:41.45 Oh yes. I mean, I wasn't even raised with the Sabbath, 00:24:41.84\00:24:43.69 but I find that myself, my body knows 00:24:43.78\00:24:45.72 when to shut down, when it's tired, 00:24:45.73\00:24:47.33 when it's ready to rest, and when the Sabbath comes, 00:24:47.34\00:24:49.36 it's just ready. 00:24:49.48\00:24:50.75 Just another interesting sidelight in this study, 00:24:50.78\00:24:53.24 the title's fascinating, and I should just mention it, 00:24:53.42\00:24:55.48 because some of our viewers may be interested 00:24:55.63\00:24:57.87 in picking up a copy of this. 00:24:57.88\00:24:59.36 The title that the authors gave for this study 00:24:59.51\00:25:02.81 was "Death Rests Awhile." 00:25:02.84\00:25:06.21 "Death Rests Awhile." 00:25:06.45\00:25:08.03 It was published back in 2001 in the journal called 00:25:08.09\00:25:11.00 "Social Science and Medicine." 00:25:11.15\00:25:13.45 But Cathy, one other interesting dimension to this study, 00:25:13.51\00:25:16.66 young children did not seem to have the benefit. 00:25:16.84\00:25:20.30 So it seems that those who are in the most 00:25:20.48\00:25:22.48 stressful years of their life, 00:25:22.49\00:25:24.69 have--you know, the adults, 00:25:24.84\00:25:26.69 as we're dealing with the real world pressures... 00:25:27.09\00:25:29.24 Kids, you know, they're kind of isolated. 00:25:29.36\00:25:30.72 Every day...they don't have to worry about too much. 00:25:30.73\00:25:33.06 Mom and Dad are taking care of them. 00:25:33.12\00:25:34.69 But we need this special benefit of the Sabbath. 00:25:34.75\00:25:37.75 Just another insight from medical science 00:25:37.76\00:25:41.39 saying that God, when He created us... 00:25:41.40\00:25:44.12 And when God asks us to "Remember" 00:25:44.30\00:25:47.12 the Sabbath, He was not just speaking spiritually. 00:25:47.18\00:25:49.60 He knew our physical needs as well. 00:25:49.63\00:25:51.30 Always.
