It's a beautiful day. 00:11:30.24\00:11:32.24 It's a beautiful day isn't it. 00:11:32.36\00:11:34.21 I want to talk about this young lady 00:11:34.48\00:11:36.69 that we just interviewed in our studio, 00:11:36.70\00:11:39.12 And tell us a little about her condition, 00:11:39.57\00:11:42.84 I know it's called Crohn's disease, 00:11:42.85\00:11:45.54 or inflammation of the intestines, 00:11:46.03\00:11:48.30 but more specifically, what is she dealing with here? 00:11:48.75\00:11:51.66 Well, she's dealing with... her primary symptoms are just 00:11:52.21\00:11:55.75 a lot of abdominal pain and upset, 00:11:56.30\00:12:00.51 she's just uncomfortable and in a lot of pain, 00:12:00.66\00:12:04.06 and this goes on for much of the day 00:12:04.07\00:12:06.57 And she tries different things, eating, 00:12:07.00\00:12:09.75 and the foods or something 00:12:09.76\00:12:11.66 upsets her so it aggravates the pain. 00:12:11.67\00:12:14.24 And she's had this condition for 00:12:14.45\00:12:16.81 what seven or eight years maybe longer, 00:12:16.82\00:12:19.69 she's nineteen, and she's a very wonderful individual, 00:12:20.03\00:12:24.36 but because of her disease and her problems 00:12:24.81\00:12:29.45 she looks more like she's eleven or twelve years old, 00:12:30.00\00:12:32.66 because she's very small, she's short 00:12:32.67\00:12:35.75 And just because everything that's happened to her. 00:12:38.09\00:12:41.45 Her mom tells us that they're a meat and potatoes type family, 00:12:41.69\00:12:45.12 would this add to the condition? would it make it worse? 00:12:45.57\00:12:50.18 Or would a lacto or vegan diet be even better? 00:12:50.60\00:12:57.00 Well in our experience with working with patients like this, 00:12:57.51\00:13:00.60 with Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.45 and other problems like this, 00:13:02.46\00:13:04.00 we have found that they respond very well 00:13:04.33\00:13:08.03 to the type of program that we have here at NEWSTART. 00:13:08.45\00:13:11.60 And what we are dealing with-- 00:13:12.18\00:13:14.27 or what we transition the patients to, 00:13:14.28\00:13:16.72 the come from whatever they've been doing, 00:13:16.87\00:13:18.63 and they come here and we get them on 00:13:19.21\00:13:22.12 what we call a whole plant food diet. 00:13:22.13\00:13:24.87 In fact, as we work with the patients I said, 00:13:25.33\00:13:27.48 You need some nutritional guidelines, 00:13:27.63\00:13:29.87 and there's five words that summarize this very nicely, 00:13:30.42\00:13:33.54 and those words are Whole Plant Foods Eaten Whole. 00:13:34.12\00:13:40.03 W P F E W, very simple. 00:13:40.48\00:13:43.84 So what that means Doctor if I may interrupt for a moment, 00:13:44.30\00:13:47.21 that means that anything that grows in the ground, 00:13:47.39\00:13:50.75 you eat it like it comes out of the ground, cooked or not? 00:13:50.76\00:13:54.60 Well they can be cooked and so on, 00:13:54.84\00:13:56.72 now there still are some plants that 00:13:57.00\00:13:59.12 grow that you really don't want to eat! 00:13:59.13\00:14:01.33 You know there's poisonous plants, 00:14:01.48\00:14:03.72 but of the edible plants, 00:14:03.81\00:14:05.27 Of the edible! I should 00:14:05.36\00:14:06.84 have prefaced it with the edible. 00:14:06.85\00:14:08.81 Of the edible plants, yes we 00:14:08.87\00:14:11.39 prefer that people eat plant foods. 00:14:11.40\00:14:14.36 Another thing we use to help them understand is that 00:14:14.57\00:14:18.81 if it has a mother or a face you shouldn't eat it! 00:14:19.30\00:14:23.12 A mother or a face, or if it 00:14:24.39\00:14:26.18 comes from a mother or-- I got it. 00:14:26.19\00:14:28.27 See and another one is 00:14:28.57\00:14:31.57 your stomach is not a graveyard for dead animals! 00:14:32.36\00:14:35.57 See if it's dead you really don't want to eat it! 00:14:35.72\00:14:38.54 When you say it like that I can't 00:14:39.09\00:14:41.09 imagine why anyone would want to eat animal, 00:14:41.10\00:14:43.63 you know the graveyard for dead animals just, eww. 00:14:44.09\00:14:47.27 Well that's right, in fact one 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.54 of our guests called and told us, 00:14:49.55\00:14:51.45 I went back home and was 00:14:51.57\00:14:53.42 having dinner with my grandchildren, 00:14:53.43\00:14:56.06 and chicken was on the menu, 00:14:58.27\00:15:00.36 now she says, I wasn't going to eat that, but my grandson 00:15:00.57\00:15:04.69 was talking and he says, Grandma, we're having chicken 00:15:05.24\00:15:09.39 and Grandma says to her grandson, 00:15:09.60\00:15:12.66 you know what chicken is? you know what that is? 00:15:12.84\00:15:15.72 She says, that's dead chicken. 00:15:15.73\00:15:17.51 And the little boy looked at his mama and said, 00:15:18.03\00:15:21.03 Is that right? Is that dead chicken? 00:15:21.04\00:15:23.24 And Mama says, That's right. He said I don't want any. 00:15:23.78\00:15:28.00 So another way we say it, Do you want 00:15:30.60\00:15:33.30 your protein first hand or second hand? 00:15:33.31\00:15:36.06 Do you want pre-used protein? 00:15:36.27\00:15:39.24 If you do you can get it in fish, 00:15:39.33\00:15:42.54 and chicken, beef, and lamb. 00:15:42.55\00:15:45.24 That's because these animals eat that plant? 00:15:45.39\00:15:48.81 Yes, that's because they eat the plants, 00:15:48.82\00:15:50.00 that's their primary source of protein. 00:15:50.01\00:15:51.06 And the humans eat the animal 00:15:51.18\00:15:52.18 rather than the plant, typically. 00:15:52.19\00:15:53.30 That's right, right. 00:15:53.45\00:15:55.12 And you know when you get patients with these problems 00:15:55.57\00:15:58.69 and you transition them to a plant based diet, along with 00:15:58.84\00:16:02.75 the nutritional counseling which is available here, 00:16:03.30\00:16:06.24 and careful monitoring and the other things, 00:16:06.69\00:16:08.72 it's remarkable how well they do. 00:16:09.09\00:16:11.57 And Krista is a prime example of that. 00:16:11.78\00:16:14.00 Now what specifically do we do with our guests, 00:16:14.30\00:16:19.12 I mean I know each on is individual but with Krista, 00:16:19.57\00:16:23.03 anything in particular that you did for her 00:16:23.48\00:16:27.63 that perhaps you wouldn't have done for a 00:16:27.81\00:16:30.15 guest with diabetes or high blood pressure? 00:16:30.16\00:16:32.42 Well, there's probably a little more 00:16:33.72\00:16:35.87 emphasis on nutrition, food selections. 00:16:35.88\00:16:38.21 We find that large varieties of food 00:16:38.66\00:16:42.66 for a person with gastro-intestinal 00:16:43.33\00:16:45.45 problems as Krista had 00:16:45.46\00:16:46.72 it's better to cut those down to maybe 00:16:46.87\00:16:49.57 two or three types of food at one time. 00:16:49.58\00:16:52.27 This and also encouraging them to avoid irritating spices like 00:16:52.75\00:16:59.18 chili peppers and tabasco sauce, and things like this, 00:16:59.63\00:17:03.27 and you know just regular 00:17:03.45\00:17:04.78 pepper that people put on their food. 00:17:04.79\00:17:06.72 But we don't serve that here. 00:17:06.87\00:17:08.54 No, no, we don't serve that here, 00:17:08.55\00:17:10.00 but they need to know that when they return home, 00:17:10.01\00:17:12.00 In fact as we were talking to Krista, 00:17:12.42\00:17:15.48 you know, my wife is a 00:17:15.72\00:17:16.84 dietician was talking to Krista today. 00:17:16.85\00:17:18.69 We mentioned that you know, 00:17:18.87\00:17:20.66 Krista we know you're feeling better 00:17:20.67\00:17:22.87 and when you return to your home, 00:17:23.36\00:17:25.81 and as you're feeling better we don't want 00:17:26.69\00:17:28.75 you to start to add some of these things back, 00:17:28.76\00:17:31.06 you know, start to use some spices that are 00:17:31.54\00:17:33.78 going to be irritating, or doing other things, 00:17:33.79\00:17:36.21 because then you will have a relapse. 00:17:36.81\00:17:38.81 And we've seen this time and time again from 00:17:39.15\00:17:41.42 people we've heard they're doing very very well, 00:17:41.43\00:17:43.84 they say, Well I'm feeling so well I just want to 00:17:44.18\00:17:46.78 go back and try something like this. 00:17:47.12\00:17:49.12 And I said you really need to stay 00:17:49.66\00:17:51.09 away from that totally and completely, 00:17:51.10\00:17:52.54 if you want to allow your 00:17:52.81\00:17:54.30 gastro-intestinal tract to heal up completely. 00:17:54.31\00:17:56.81 And it takes time because their 00:17:57.09\00:17:59.54 gastro-intestinal tract has been severely inflamed, 00:17:59.55\00:18:03.51 and many of the medications are aimed at 00:18:03.69\00:18:06.30 cutting down and suppressing the inflammation. 00:18:06.31\00:18:09.21 And it just takes time with this 00:18:10.27\00:18:12.27 type of program and this approach 00:18:12.28\00:18:14.24 and when it does take place, 00:18:14.51\00:18:17.48 they are so much happier and pain free. 00:18:18.03\00:18:20.39 In fact we had an individual in one of our previous programs, 00:18:20.51\00:18:23.87 and near the end of the program, he said, You know what? 00:18:24.30\00:18:27.51 Everyday before I would wake up in pain, 00:18:28.06\00:18:30.48 and I would have pain almost all day long, 00:18:30.49\00:18:33.06 and I would be in bed, I couldn't get 00:18:33.30\00:18:35.36 out of bed because I was so uncomfortable. 00:18:35.37\00:18:37.63 But he said, Today 00:18:37.75\00:18:39.54 I have almost no pain. 00:18:40.75\00:18:42.69 And that hasn't been like that for years. 00:18:43.09\00:18:45.87 And a day or two later he said, I don't have any at all! 00:18:46.39\00:18:49.21 And he was just overjoyed. 00:18:49.66\00:18:51.60 And I've called him since, 00:18:52.15\00:18:53.63 you know, contact by email and phone, 00:18:53.64\00:18:55.69 he continues to do well, as long as he 00:18:56.15\00:18:58.33 continues to follow the program that has been outlined. 00:18:58.34\00:19:01.45 Now Krista's mother is here, and she's also lost pounds. 00:19:02.21\00:19:05.21 She's been kind of a companion or an observer 00:19:05.27\00:19:08.57 and she tells us that when they get home they're 00:19:09.12\00:19:12.87 cleaning out the refrigerator and the cupboards 00:19:13.42\00:19:16.27 they're really on this program a hundred percent, 00:19:16.63\00:19:19.42 so I think that's a blessing that mom came here. 00:19:19.43\00:19:22.12 Did you have an opportunity to visit with her as well? 00:19:22.51\00:19:24.78 Oh yes, because many times she would come in with Krista, 00:19:25.27\00:19:28.03 and we would talk together, 00:19:28.04\00:19:29.27 and she's very supportive, 00:19:29.60\00:19:31.45 and it's been a real challenge to the family 00:19:31.46\00:19:34.45 because they've had to shepherd and nurture her. 00:19:34.72\00:19:38.00 And it makes me sad to see someone like this 00:19:38.45\00:19:41.87 so young with so much life ahead to be in so much misery. 00:19:42.27\00:19:46.84 Is there anything you can say to our viewers 00:19:48.42\00:19:51.57 that might help those who have that condition? 00:19:51.58\00:19:54.81 Well you know, if you're willing to transition 00:19:55.48\00:19:58.78 to a totally plant based diet, 00:19:59.33\00:20:01.03 that's a very important first step. 00:20:01.04\00:20:02.84 And then you probably need to cut down on 00:20:03.51\00:20:06.63 how many different varieties of food you eat at one time, 00:20:07.18\00:20:11.33 and also you need to eliminate 00:20:11.63\00:20:13.81 irritating spices and things like that. 00:20:13.82\00:20:16.60 Dr. Ing, we're running out of time, 00:20:17.39\00:20:19.21 I want to thank you for joining us in our studio 00:20:19.22\00:20:21.60 God bless you in the work that 00:20:22.21\00:20:23.84 you do here at the NEWSTART program. 00:20:23.85\00:20:25.84 And folks thank you for joining us, 00:20:26.54\00:20:28.12 but don't leave just yet 00:20:28.13\00:20:29.15 because we have an important message for you in a moment. 00:20:29.33\00:20:32.63 Greetings and welcome, thank you for joining us today. 00:20:47.06\00:20:49.27 Today we have Dr. DeRose. 00:20:49.51\00:20:50.78 Dr. DeRose, it's a pleasure to have you here. 00:20:50.81\00:20:52.57 Great to be with you again Cathy. 00:20:53.06\00:20:54.42 Well good, what do you have to share with us today? 00:20:54.48\00:20:56.03 I know something exciting. 00:20:56.04\00:20:57.06 Well it is, one of my favorite topics 00:20:57.27\00:20:59.54 when we talk about total health, 00:20:59.66\00:21:02.00 is something called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor. 00:21:02.18\00:21:05.84 Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor. 00:21:06.09\00:21:08.39 Wow - I did it! 00:21:08.48\00:21:09.75 You must have heard of that before. 00:21:09.78\00:21:11.15 This is the first time, I'm excited 00:21:11.18\00:21:12.66 to hear what you got to say though. 00:21:12.67\00:21:14.21 Ok, well sometimes we just abbreviate it BDNF. 00:21:14.66\00:21:16.81 - BDNF, ok that's easier. 00:21:16.87\00:21:18.12 Ok, but for those who might like to just 00:21:18.33\00:21:21.39 get up to speed with why we call it 00:21:21.51\00:21:23.45 Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, 00:21:23.54\00:21:25.54 I'll explain that. 00:21:25.55\00:21:26.57 Brain derived, obviously means 00:21:27.15\00:21:28.84 this compound comes from the brain. 00:21:28.85\00:21:30.81 So your brain makes it, it's brain derived. 00:21:31.03\00:21:33.66 It's a Neurotrophic factor, 00:21:33.87\00:21:36.18 neuro refers to nerve cells, trophic refers to growth. 00:21:36.27\00:21:40.21 So this is a naturally occurring brain growth factor. 00:21:41.00\00:21:43.75 Your brain makes it. 00:21:43.81\00:21:44.87 But we don't all have the same levels of BDNF, 00:21:45.42\00:21:48.42 and scientists at this point do not know any way 00:21:48.87\00:21:53.12 to give you BDNF by mouth or some other way, 00:21:53.42\00:21:56.54 and increase it in your brain. 00:21:56.55\00:21:58.60 So we've got to find some other way if we want to boost 00:21:59.48\00:22:02.24 our levels of this compound, because it's very exciting. 00:22:02.25\00:22:05.00 Research is telling us if we have higher BDNF levels, 00:22:05.60\00:22:09.03 we have lower rates of stroke, 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.18 we have lower rates of Alzheimer's disease, 00:22:12.15\00:22:15.00 lower rates of Parkinson's, 00:22:15.45\00:22:17.66 lower rates of depression. 00:22:18.42\00:22:20.60 So you can see why this would be an exciting compound, 00:22:21.12\00:22:23.36 and there's a lot going on in the research community, 00:22:23.45\00:22:25.75 So we're beginning to unfold some of the things 00:22:26.24\00:22:29.51 that actually cause BDNF levels to 00:22:30.06\00:22:32.27 either rise or fall in the brain. 00:22:32.28\00:22:34.39 Are you interested in any of this? 00:22:34.57\00:22:35.66 Oh yes, lets hear what you've got to share, this is exciting. 00:22:35.81\00:22:38.66 One of the first ones, 00:22:38.81\00:22:40.57 that actually raises BDNF levels is fasting. 00:22:40.75\00:22:44.69 Really? Well lets explain why that is. 00:22:45.06\00:22:47.75 Ok, well why it is, researchers think 00:22:47.87\00:22:50.63 it has to do with fasting 00:22:51.03\00:22:53.15 being a mild stresser to the brain. 00:22:53.16\00:22:56.03 So when you're not eating puts a mild stress on the brain, 00:22:56.84\00:23:00.57 and that causes the brain cells to 00:23:01.30\00:23:03.66 put out this nerve growth factor. 00:23:03.67\00:23:06.00 What happens is we look at 00:23:06.84\00:23:08.36 animal research, this is where we've 00:23:08.37\00:23:10.30 worked this out the most comprehensively, 00:23:10.63\00:23:13.75 I'm not an animal researcher, 00:23:14.09\00:23:15.78 I'm kind of speaking generically as me 00:23:15.81\00:23:18.00 being part of the medical research community. 00:23:18.01\00:23:20.33 They actually find that if you cut back, 00:23:21.36\00:23:24.03 caloric intake, whether it be a fast 00:23:24.39\00:23:27.60 or just decreasing meal intake, 00:23:27.66\00:23:30.12 you actually can raise levels of this compound. 00:23:30.57\00:23:32.27 And it doesn't take a lot, 20-30 percent 00:23:32.28\00:23:35.12 decrease in caloric intake can make a significant difference. 00:23:35.39\00:23:38.33 Now Cathy, you may have heard this before, but if you look 00:23:38.78\00:23:42.21 at longevity research in animals, 00:23:42.48\00:23:44.48 are you aware of one of the most 00:23:45.03\00:23:46.63 consistent factors known to increase longevity? 00:23:46.64\00:23:49.03 No. 00:23:49.04\00:23:50.06 It is actually fasting. - Really? 00:23:50.27\00:23:51.81 Decrease caloric intake. 00:23:52.00\00:23:53.48 So like skipping one meal, two meals? 00:23:53.54\00:23:55.27 What is the definition of fasting? 00:23:55.28\00:23:56.72 Well let me put it this way, we talk about cutting back, 00:23:56.84\00:23:59.27 if you give an animal 20 00:23:59.81\00:24:02.12 percent less calories than it's peer, 00:24:02.13\00:24:05.39 that animal who's getting less on a daily basis, 00:24:05.87\00:24:08.66 will tend to live about 20 percent longer. 00:24:08.67\00:24:11.12 Cut back the calories 30 percent, 00:24:11.84\00:24:13.81 how much longer do you think it lives? 00:24:14.06\00:24:15.39 Oh, not much-- twice the amount? 00:24:15.57\00:24:17.33 30 percent longer. - Oh 30 percent longer. 00:24:17.45\00:24:19.03 It's almost a direct relationship, 00:24:19.06\00:24:20.84 cut back the calories 35 percent 00:24:20.85\00:24:22.60 lives 35 percent longer. 00:24:22.78\00:24:24.45 Now of course, you can't cut the calories back 99 percent! 00:24:24.48\00:24:27.87 You know there's a point of diminishing returns. 00:24:28.63\00:24:31.18 But the interesting thing is that it almost seems 00:24:31.36\00:24:34.54 like in this world of sin, we're programed if you will, 00:24:34.87\00:24:38.81 to process a certain amount of food an then die, 00:24:39.15\00:24:41.63 so the more we eat, 00:24:42.18\00:24:43.57 the sooner we die. 00:24:44.15\00:24:45.33 Now some of us are thinner than others, 00:24:45.75\00:24:48.18 and some people may say well That's not fair 00:24:48.45\00:24:50.42 you can eat more food and not gain weight. 00:24:50.57\00:24:52.36 Well it doesn't work that way when it comes to BDNF. 00:24:52.45\00:24:55.51 Those who are being more abstemious, 00:24:55.81\00:24:57.84 cutting back more 00:24:57.85\00:24:59.03 seem to have higher BDNF levels. 00:24:59.04\00:25:00.69 But it isn't only watching your food intake 00:25:01.03\00:25:03.33 physical exercise also boosts 00:25:04.09\00:25:06.15 levels of this brain protective compound. 00:25:06.16\00:25:08.87 - Wow, and what about foods? Different types of foods? 00:25:09.21\00:25:12.09 Well I haven't seen anything in the literature 00:25:12.36\00:25:14.66 that has really nailed down any specific foods, 00:25:14.67\00:25:17.03 There is one thing that is sometimes classed 00:25:17.33\00:25:20.27 with diet, and that is alcohol, alcoholic beverages, 00:25:20.45\00:25:23.24 they actually seem to disrupt neurotrophic levels. 00:25:23.42\00:25:27.12 Instead of enhancing these natural brain compounds, 00:25:27.27\00:25:31.27 they raise them, some of them in certain 00:25:31.39\00:25:33.72 parts of the brain, depress them in others, 00:25:33.73\00:25:36.24 and there's a whole family of these things, not just BDNF. 00:25:36.36\00:25:39.21 So alcohol seems to be undesirable as 00:25:39.42\00:25:41.45 far as the natural balance of the brain, 00:25:41.46\00:25:43.60 but as far as other 00:25:43.78\00:25:45.00 nutrients I haven't seen details. 00:25:45.01\00:25:46.48 But one last thing I should mention, 00:25:46.72\00:25:48.51 that is helpful for this compound and it is 00:25:48.72\00:25:51.30 environmental enrichment, or mental challenge. 00:25:51.31\00:25:54.00 - Ok that is so amazing. So mental challenge being? 00:25:54.30\00:25:57.60 Well am I challenging you right now? 00:25:57.84\00:25:59.21 Am I kind of stretching you? - Yes! 00:25:59.22\00:26:00.39 Well see you're raising your BDNF levels, 00:26:00.45\00:26:02.63 - Oh good! 00:26:02.64\00:26:03.72 The way you're trying to keep on your toes 00:26:03.81\00:26:05.45 here as I'm throwing new terms out at you! 00:26:05.46\00:26:07.06 So you can say, Look, if nothing else was accomplished 00:26:07.21\00:26:10.03 in our visit, at least your BDNF levels likely rose! 00:26:10.30\00:26:15.12 Oh that's exciting. For those of you who 00:26:15.21\00:26:17.69 would like to also have your BDNF levels increased 00:26:17.70\00:26:20.75 then please visit our website at: 00:26:21.00\00:26:22.75 Thank you for joining us. 00:26:23.54\00:26:24.84 Modern views of evolution stem all the way 00:26:32.60\00:26:35.09 back to theories developed in the mid 1800s. 00:26:35.10\00:26:37.51 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:38.54\00:26:41.60 our educational system today. 00:26:41.81\00:26:43.84 The common school movement for example, 00:26:44.84\00:26:46.72 saw schools more like a factory, 00:26:46.87\00:26:48.78 with students blindly memorizing 00:26:48.84\00:26:50.72 instruction rather than thinking for themselves. 00:26:50.73\00:26:53.48 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical, 00:26:54.36\00:26:56.66 instead of being flexible and practical, 00:26:57.21\00:26:59.33 It was designed to conform the individual 00:26:59.78\00:27:02.24 into a specific ideological mold, 00:27:02.33\00:27:04.84 that fit the needs of a old industrial era, long since past. 00:27:05.30\00:27:08.66 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:10.39\00:27:13.51 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:13.72\00:27:17.66 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:18.03\00:27:20.33 Well friends that's it for today, 00:27:33.87\00:27:35.81 but I want to leave you with a thought, 00:27:36.24\00:27:37.75 as Paul writes to the Corinthians, 00:27:38.21\00:27:40.33 he says, Do you not know that your body is the temple 00:27:40.78\00:27:43.69 of the holy spirit and that you are bought with a price? 00:27:43.70\00:27:46.69 Therefore glorify God in your body, 00:27:47.27\00:27:49.60 and in your spirit which are God's. 00:27:50.15\00:27:52.63 Friends I know those of you who are sick, 00:27:53.51\00:27:56.09 or you know someone who's sick, 00:27:56.54\00:27:58.24 pick up the phone and give us a call, 00:27:58.51\00:28:00.36
