Yes. 00:01:53.45\00:01:54.69 Let's just get right into this, 00:01:54.81\00:01:56.39 because I know the viewers, 00:01:56.42\00:01:57.84 through the first interview they're going, 00:01:58.06\00:01:59.84 "Wow! What a big man." 00:01:59.85\00:02:02.57 Let's just start with the weight. 00:02:02.81\00:02:05.24 How many pounds have you lost? 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.00 A hundred and five on the books. 00:02:07.01\00:02:09.24 A hundred and five on the books! 00:02:09.33\00:02:11.36 And perhaps a little bit more. 00:02:11.54\00:02:13.39 You've actually -- Folks, 00:02:13.45\00:02:15.45 Dave has lost a whole person. 00:02:15.54\00:02:17.81 We have a camera crew here, 00:02:18.12\00:02:19.84 one of which weighs about 90 pounds! 00:02:20.00\00:02:22.75 So he's lost at least her. 00:02:22.76\00:02:24.69 Dave, tell us what else has happened here. 00:02:24.72\00:02:30.21 Well, okay. Yesterday I walked the Half Mile Loop. 00:02:30.72\00:02:35.18 For the first time. 00:02:35.48\00:02:37.15 Now, let me also share to the viewers, 00:02:37.51\00:02:40.09 so this is fair. 00:02:40.24\00:02:41.51 Some people are going, 00:02:41.54\00:02:42.66 "No. He couldn't have lost 105 pounds 00:02:42.72\00:02:45.51 in 18 days." 00:02:45.52\00:02:46.81 You're right. He didn't lose 105 pounds in 18 days. 00:02:47.12\00:02:50.66 Dave has been with us 3 months 00:02:50.75\00:02:53.15 and has gone through 4 sessions, 00:02:53.16\00:02:55.87 back to back sessions. 00:02:56.09\00:02:58.03 And when Dave got here, 00:02:58.06\00:02:59.48 he couldn't even move! He couldn't walk. 00:02:59.57\00:03:01.60 And the Half Mile Loop was a big achievement. 00:03:02.69\00:03:06.75 So let's get back to that Half Mile Loop. 00:03:06.84\00:03:09.15 Yep, did the Half Mile Loop. 00:03:09.33\00:03:10.60 When I first got here I couldn't walk 10 feet 00:03:10.66\00:03:12.21 without stopping and resting. 00:03:12.22\00:03:14.06 So that was big. 00:03:14.07\00:03:16.03 And I'm paying for it today. 00:03:16.06\00:03:18.09 A little sore, but... - A little sore, that's alright! 00:03:18.10\00:03:20.30 But it's worth it. 00:03:20.39\00:03:22.09 That's one of the biggest accomplishments, 00:03:22.42\00:03:25.12 is being able to walk further, exercise, 00:03:25.15\00:03:27.36 and then of course my legs 00:03:27.42\00:03:29.42 are much different now than they were 00:03:29.57\00:03:32.00 when I first got here. 00:03:32.09\00:03:33.18 There's no weeping, there's no... 00:03:33.57\00:03:35.21 They look like legs now. 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.45 We should have got, at the first interview, 00:03:37.60\00:03:39.75 although your legs were wrapped with bandages so that... 00:03:39.87\00:03:44.57 because they were oozing! 00:03:44.66\00:03:46.15 They were actually infected and sore. 00:03:46.27\00:03:48.75 And as I remember, and I described it as being 00:03:48.76\00:03:52.63 black and blue and purple and red, 00:03:52.64\00:03:54.87 all these colors mixed up. 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.84 His legs, they look fantastic, Dave. I'm so happy. 00:03:56.87\00:04:00.63 Yeah, I credit hydro for that, and the low-salt diet. 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.36 Yes! And you took the bandages off, 00:04:03.48\00:04:06.72 Tell us from there, what's happened after that? 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.00 Did you put them back on? 00:04:09.03\00:04:10.15 I expected to have to put them back on. 00:04:10.30\00:04:12.30 I didn't believe the doc when he told me 00:04:12.31\00:04:14.21 that I wouldn't have to put the bandages back on. 00:04:14.22\00:04:16.27 And I took them off the day after the first interview, 00:04:16.36\00:04:19.18 Wednesday, for the first hydro, 00:04:19.30\00:04:21.27 and I didn't have to put them back on. 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.51 In three days you took them off? - Yep. 00:04:23.52\00:04:25.45 And you had been wearing them one year? 00:04:25.72\00:04:28.30 Yeah. Changing them every week for a year. 00:04:28.31\00:04:30.57 Now let's get into some of the medications you were taking, 00:04:31.15\00:04:34.87 or are still taking. 00:04:35.00\00:04:36.39 What kind of... I know you had diabetes, 00:04:36.57\00:04:39.81 and high blood pressure. 00:04:40.03\00:04:41.54 And your respiratory, you had problems there. 00:04:41.55\00:04:46.12 Your heart rate was like 105, 00:04:46.13\00:04:49.33 resting, is that not correct? - Yeah, that's correct. 00:04:49.39\00:04:52.60 Tell us what has happened with these things now. 00:04:52.61\00:04:54.81 Well, the doc was being very cautious because 00:04:55.00\00:04:58.57 he didn't want my heart rate to get very high, 00:04:58.66\00:05:02.51 because one of the medications keeps the heart rate down. 00:05:02.66\00:05:04.87 So we've only gone off half 00:05:05.15\00:05:07.87 of one of the three heart medications, 00:05:08.09\00:05:12.42 So my pulse got down to about 80, 00:05:12.60\00:05:15.24 and then he started weaning me off some of the meds, 00:05:15.25\00:05:17.60 and now it's around 90. 00:05:17.72\00:05:19.48 So when it gets back to 80 we'll take off more of the meds. 00:05:19.60\00:05:22.45 But yeah, my resting was like 105, 107 00:05:22.54\00:05:25.87 when I first got here, every time I took it, 00:05:26.21\00:05:28.24 just getting out of bed. 00:05:28.36\00:05:29.60 And then it... Now it's much less. 00:05:29.61\00:05:34.18 And I went off the cholesterol medication, 00:05:34.27\00:05:36.84 and so I truly saw what my cholesterol was. 00:05:37.21\00:05:40.36 I thought it was under control for years, 00:05:40.48\00:05:42.42 but it was the medication that was keeping it under control. 00:05:42.43\00:05:45.33 It was under control through medication. 00:05:45.36\00:05:47.78 - It shot through the roof when I went off the med. 00:05:48.03\00:05:49.57 And insulin, I probably 00:05:49.87\00:05:52.36 stopped taking shots the third week. 00:05:52.37\00:05:55.48 - You don't take insulin anymore, at all? 00:05:55.72\00:05:58.39 No, I was taking 125 units of quick-acting 00:05:58.40\00:06:03.00 and 80 units of slow-acting 00:06:03.01\00:06:04.81 insulin when I first got here, 00:06:05.06\00:06:06.15 so that's like 200 units. 00:06:06.16\00:06:07.54 I went down to nothing. Every once in a while, 00:06:07.55\00:06:09.63 if I eat a little too much fruit for breakfast, 00:06:09.78\00:06:11.63 I have to give myself a little tiny shot. 00:06:11.64\00:06:14.21 But at least it's not sweets or anything. 00:06:14.22\00:06:17.63 It's good fruit. 00:06:17.64\00:06:19.72 Are you taking any oral medication for diabetes? 00:06:19.87\00:06:23.63 I'm taking one. - Metformin? 00:06:23.66\00:06:25.54 I'm on Actos. - Okay. 00:06:25.72\00:06:28.12 And how many milligrams? 00:06:28.27\00:06:30.66 45 milligrams. - That's practically nothing! 00:06:30.75\00:06:33.48 And we're gonna probably go off that 00:06:33.69\00:06:35.78 once the sugars get down below 200. 00:06:35.87\00:06:38.81 - Good. Good for you. 00:06:39.00\00:06:40.84 So tell us about... 00:06:41.12\00:06:43.51 You know, I've never interviewed a big man like yourself. 00:06:43.69\00:06:47.81 Although, we've had one other individual I recall. 00:06:48.06\00:06:52.45 But tell us, how did your routine... 00:06:52.57\00:06:54.78 How did you possibly fathom 00:06:54.79\00:06:57.63 that coming to this NEWSTART program 00:06:57.64\00:07:00.57 you would gain, or lose in this case, 00:07:00.63\00:07:03.54 anything at all when you couldn't even move! 00:07:03.60\00:07:06.27 I know I saw you walk 10 feet 00:07:06.39\00:07:08.72 and then sit down and rest, gasping for air. 00:07:08.81\00:07:11.66 What possessed you? 00:07:12.03\00:07:14.57 I was ready to try anything. 00:07:15.39\00:07:17.63 I was frustrated. 00:07:17.66\00:07:19.24 I had spend the last year and a half gaining. 00:07:19.39\00:07:22.24 Every time I went to the doctor, every month, 00:07:22.25\00:07:24.24 it would be 15-20 pounds more. 00:07:24.25\00:07:26.18 Every time I went it was just... I was so frustrated. 00:07:26.19\00:07:29.39 I was happy when I went to the doctor 00:07:29.40\00:07:31.15 and only had gained 4 or 5 pounds. 00:07:31.16\00:07:32.63 So I was ready to try the bypass, 00:07:32.72\00:07:37.09 I was ready to do anything. 00:07:37.24\00:07:39.84 And of course, my sister's a nurse anesthetist, 00:07:40.03\00:07:44.66 she said she would never want me on the table 00:07:44.67\00:07:47.54 in the operating room, being my size, 00:07:47.57\00:07:50.12 and do anesthesia. 00:07:50.21\00:07:51.66 Because she said it would be easy to put me to sleep, 00:07:51.69\00:07:54.06 but it would be really hard to wake me up 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.00 once it's done, and real easy for stuff to go wrong. 00:07:56.24\00:07:58.63 So I'm glad I don't have to go the surgery route. 00:07:59.03\00:08:01.36 It was a blessing to be able to come here. 00:08:01.78\00:08:06.42 I learned a total new lifestyle, like I was hoping. 00:08:06.43\00:08:10.36 I mean, everything I had been taught in the past, 00:08:10.39\00:08:13.45 I had to be re-educated. 00:08:13.60\00:08:15.66 - Totally re-educated. It's amazing, isn't it? 00:08:15.81\00:08:18.69 Let me ask you a serious question now. 00:08:18.75\00:08:21.51 For the viewers, for that viewer there that 00:08:21.69\00:08:24.63 perhaps is morbidly obese. 00:08:24.64\00:08:27.30 And morbid to me is-- They said I was morbidly obese 00:08:27.45\00:08:30.81 by being 75 pounds overweight. 00:08:30.82\00:08:33.42 Was there a time when you suffered from depression 00:08:33.57\00:08:37.03 so severe that you gave up and decided 00:08:37.04\00:08:40.33 this was it, you're just going to check out, 00:08:40.39\00:08:43.09 you didn't want to live this life? 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.39 Yeah, the last year and a half, 00:08:45.87\00:08:48.84 I was really depressed. 00:08:49.00\00:08:50.84 In fact, I had to change depression meds 00:08:50.87\00:08:53.54 because I was so bad I couldn't concentrate, 00:08:53.60\00:08:55.75 I couldn't think straight. 00:08:55.81\00:08:58.87 I'd find myself driving through that fast-food restaurant 00:08:58.88\00:09:03.27 line again and thinking, "What am I doing to myself?" 00:09:03.51\00:09:05.60 and I just kept doing it. 00:09:05.61\00:09:07.00 I kept doing it, and it just dragged me down, 00:09:07.01\00:09:09.42 and down, and down. 00:09:09.48\00:09:10.63 Oh yeah, I was very depressed. 00:09:11.00\00:09:12.72 There were many days when I was thinking, 00:09:12.73\00:09:14.84 "I just hope I don't wake up tomorrow morning. 00:09:15.18\00:09:17.06 It'd be easier," you know. 00:09:17.07\00:09:19.57 But now you seem so happy. 00:09:19.84\00:09:21.72 You seem like a young man that has been given hope. 00:09:22.09\00:09:26.36 And you know, we serve a God that's a God of hope. 00:09:26.39\00:09:30.18 And we know that He is here watching over all our guests. 00:09:30.42\00:09:34.45 My prayer is that you continue on this path 00:09:34.54\00:09:39.42 and I get to see less of you more of the time. 00:09:39.60\00:09:42.72 The biggest transformation was the thought patterns. 00:09:43.15\00:09:47.36 I was plagued with constantly thinking of 00:09:47.69\00:09:51.21 Taco Bell burritos and stuff. 00:09:51.36\00:09:55.09 So, it was fun. The Lord took those away. 00:09:55.15\00:09:59.12 All absolutely just gone. - Gone. 00:09:59.24\00:10:02.00 Oh, David, I'm so happy for you, 00:10:02.06\00:10:04.18 and I'm so happy that you got to join us 00:10:04.27\00:10:06.48 and have our viewers witness what you've gone through. 00:10:06.49\00:10:10.33 Thank you for coming into our studio. 00:10:10.34\00:10:12.24 It's my pleasure. 00:10:12.25\00:10:13.54 And I'm going to be seeing less of you more of the time. 00:10:13.60\00:10:15.54 Folks, don't go away, because we have an interview coming up 00:10:15.72\00:10:18.69 with his doctor in just a moment. 00:10:18.84\00:10:21.57 Well, you've done very well. 00:10:22.81\00:10:24.54 Do you have diabetes, 00:10:30.87\00:10:32.24 heart disease, high blood pressure, 00:10:32.25\00:10:34.33 or do you weigh too much? 00:10:34.78\00:10:36.18 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 00:10:37.06\00:10:39.75 about our 18-day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:10:39.76\00:10:42.72 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:10:43.45\00:10:46.18 with laboratory studies and an exercise stress test, 00:10:46.19\00:10:49.48 physician consultations, 00:10:50.03\00:10:51.66 culinary school, 00:10:52.39\00:10:53.57 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful trails 00:10:54.12\00:10:57.06 in the foothills of the Sierras. 00:10:57.07\00:10:59.06 Your health is one of the most 00:11:01.12\00:11:02.54 important things that you have. Don't wait. 00:11:02.55\00:11:04.57 Give us a call at: 00:11:05.12\00:11:06.75 Or visit our website: 00:11:09.81\00:11:11.15 Welcome back, friends, and in our studio, Dr. Lukens. 00:11:28.87\00:11:32.45 How are you, my friend? 00:11:32.48\00:11:34.12 Man, I'm really excited about this one because 00:11:34.13\00:11:36.15 this is what it's all about. 00:11:36.18\00:11:39.81 This is the cat's meow, so to speak. 00:11:40.03\00:11:43.48 So, I want to hear from you, Doc, because 00:11:43.66\00:11:47.06 you know, it's not often we see a man this size 00:11:47.12\00:11:50.78 who has reached the end of his rope, 00:11:51.00\00:11:53.42 that is depressed, 00:11:53.43\00:11:55.24 ready to check out. 00:11:55.27\00:11:56.66 In fact he said, "I just pray 00:11:56.69\00:11:58.63 that I don't wake up in the morning." 00:11:58.66\00:12:00.42 What has happened? How could a guy 00:12:00.43\00:12:02.84 lose, first of all, 105 pounds like that, 00:12:03.00\00:12:06.27 and then he's no longer depressed. 00:12:06.45\00:12:09.72 Tell us some of the things that happened, please. 00:12:09.81\00:12:12.18 Well, what's exciting about him is that 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.84 he is a record for us. 00:12:14.85\00:12:16.27 I've been here 20 years, as you know, 00:12:16.36\00:12:18.30 and he's a record for us for weight loss in one week. 00:12:18.31\00:12:22.54 He came in at 668, 00:12:22.72\00:12:25.30 and he lost 30-plus pounds in the first week. 00:12:25.57\00:12:29.39 And the reason why that was so exciting 00:12:29.54\00:12:31.87 is because he didn't want us to unwrap his legs, 00:12:31.88\00:12:35.60 because what happens... 00:12:35.61\00:12:36.81 He has medicated wrappings on his legs. 00:12:37.00\00:12:39.66 When they're unwrapped, 00:12:39.84\00:12:42.57 the legs will start swelling and swelling, 00:12:43.06\00:12:46.00 and then the skin will split, 00:12:46.03\00:12:47.69 and then it takes him weeks and longer for them to heal up, 00:12:47.87\00:12:51.57 and he said, "When you do that, 00:12:51.60\00:12:53.60 it's going to set me way back." 00:12:53.69\00:12:55.27 And I believed that it wouldn't, 00:12:55.33\00:12:57.21 because I had seen this before, but not to the extent 00:12:57.22\00:13:00.54 of losing 30 pounds in one week. 00:13:00.78\00:13:02.60 So we unwrapped him. 00:13:02.69\00:13:04.06 He's never had to have them wrapped again, 00:13:04.18\00:13:06.15 and he's thrilled. 00:13:06.30\00:13:08.15 One of the things though, is that his... 00:13:08.33\00:13:11.06 He was taking his insulin wrong. 00:13:11.27\00:13:13.48 And so he has this really rapid-acting insulin 00:13:13.75\00:13:16.75 along with the long-acting insulin. 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.63 And I believe he's pretty much off of it 00:13:18.64\00:13:20.57 almost all the time now, which is really something. 00:13:20.60\00:13:23.81 And that's the way to go. 00:13:23.82\00:13:25.33 And here's what he was doing. 00:13:25.34\00:13:27.06 In the last year and a half he had gained another 140 pounds. 00:13:27.12\00:13:31.15 And he would check his blood sugar 00:13:31.51\00:13:33.75 like 2 hours after he had eaten, 00:13:33.76\00:13:35.81 and if it was 300 or 400 or whatever, 00:13:36.15\00:13:38.63 then he'd give himself 30, 40, 50 units of insulin, 00:13:38.64\00:13:43.00 and what that was doing was it was forcing 00:13:43.06\00:13:45.81 the body, the cells, to take up that sugar, 00:13:46.06\00:13:49.72 and the fat cells, they were just getting more and more. 00:13:49.84\00:13:53.57 And after you do that long enough, 00:13:53.69\00:13:55.66 you get more fat cells, and so they... 00:13:55.67\00:13:57.72 Was he possibly gaining weight by doing that? 00:13:57.81\00:14:00.12 That's how he gained 140 pounds. - Oh my goodness. 00:14:00.45\00:14:03.03 I thought it was going through the drive-thrus, 00:14:03.30\00:14:05.51 and eating all those burgers and fries. 00:14:05.52\00:14:07.60 Well no, he obviously had to be eating like that, 00:14:07.61\00:14:12.24 but he was doing his insulin wrong. 00:14:12.25\00:14:14.30 And what we want to do is we want to 00:14:14.54\00:14:16.87 have the person, by doing diet and exercise, 00:14:17.03\00:14:20.18 we want their numbers to be normal. 00:14:20.30\00:14:22.48 But the research now-- 00:14:22.57\00:14:24.27 In fact, my family practice magazines showed 00:14:24.33\00:14:27.06 that the more insulin, and the more 00:14:27.21\00:14:29.66 pills and medications that you have to take, 00:14:29.84\00:14:32.21 the quicker you're going to have a heart attack. 00:14:32.30\00:14:34.63 And so he was headed there. 00:14:34.78\00:14:37.24 He could only stand up for about 30 seconds. 00:14:37.30\00:14:40.42 One time he stood up quite a bit longer than that, 00:14:40.45\00:14:43.36 and he just had to sit down. 00:14:43.39\00:14:46.21 So I took his blood pressure, 00:14:46.22\00:14:47.66 and his blood pressure was like 60 over 40. 00:14:47.67\00:14:50.63 If he hadn't found his seat at that time, 00:14:50.64\00:14:52.72 he would have just... - Just passed out. 00:14:52.81\00:14:54.84 Yeah, he would have just collapsed. 00:14:54.85\00:14:56.75 And you know, for a guy that's in his late 30s, 00:14:57.06\00:15:00.39 and he's been teaching and so forth, he's just... 00:15:00.57\00:15:03.15 He was, as they say, he was circling the drain. 00:15:03.63\00:15:06.57 And he didn't know why it was happening. 00:15:06.87\00:15:10.30 The more he was gaining, 00:15:10.39\00:15:12.75 the more depressed he was getting. 00:15:12.81\00:15:14.60 And he was just trying to while away his days 00:15:14.87\00:15:19.09 just trying to figure out anything that he could do 00:15:19.21\00:15:22.15 to keep his mind off of what was happening with him. 00:15:22.16\00:15:25.78 And then when he saw what could happen, 00:15:25.81\00:15:30.42 and I understand-- He probably told you that 00:15:30.60\00:15:33.24 he was able to walk now, and how far he was able to go. 00:15:33.33\00:15:37.12 He walked the Half Mile Loop for the first time. 00:15:37.24\00:15:39.51 - Yeah, that was... - That was wonderful. 00:15:39.66\00:15:40.81 Yeah, and it's up and down. 00:15:40.82\00:15:42.03 Some of the cardiac patients can't 00:15:42.06\00:15:44.09 do that when they first get here. 00:15:44.10\00:15:46.03 So all of these things were going, and 00:15:46.30\00:15:49.03 you know, when a person has tried 00:15:49.09\00:15:54.81 all the things that they can do, 00:15:54.87\00:15:56.39 and they're following what they can, 00:15:56.42\00:15:59.27 and it isn't working, 00:15:59.39\00:16:01.21 then they just figure, "Well, there's nothing I can do, 00:16:01.24\00:16:04.63 and how much longer am I going to live? 00:16:04.69\00:16:08.42 How much longer do I have to live this way?" 00:16:08.57\00:16:11.27 And so, it's really sad. 00:16:11.39\00:16:14.18 You know Doctor, as many of our guests 00:16:14.19\00:16:16.60 have shared with us in the past, 00:16:16.61\00:16:18.60 that they come here and they learn a new lifestyle, 00:16:18.87\00:16:22.24 for David, what he said-- 00:16:22.45\00:16:24.36 and I know you haven't seen that interview yet, 00:16:24.48\00:16:26.87 but what he said was, "Everything I learned was 00:16:27.09\00:16:29.87 180 out from what I was taught on the outside." 00:16:30.27\00:16:33.39 And now he has a whole new lease on life. 00:16:33.66\00:16:36.42 He has hope. 00:16:36.63\00:16:38.27 And you know he may be staying with us even longer. 00:16:38.51\00:16:41.39 Yeah, well that's really good. - That would be great. 00:16:41.51\00:16:44.18 When you have a lifetime of 00:16:44.27\00:16:47.54 you know, being overweight... 00:16:47.66\00:16:50.36 I mean, he's been overweight for probably most of his life. 00:16:50.37\00:16:54.51 And then gaining more and more and more... 00:16:54.60\00:16:58.66 I think he figured, for him, 00:16:58.87\00:17:00.78 a weight of 200-250 would be magic. 00:17:01.18\00:17:04.87 Well you know, I mean, if he's... 00:17:05.00\00:17:07.18 if he's two and a half times that, it's really tough. 00:17:07.42\00:17:13.09 And the thing is, is that 00:17:13.24\00:17:15.39 you know, he still is going to have the work to do, 00:17:15.66\00:17:19.30 and if people are out there and they're saying, you know, 00:17:19.45\00:17:22.36 "Wow! I want to go to Weimar, 00:17:22.45\00:17:24.12 and I want to lose 50 pounds in 1 week," 00:17:24.30\00:17:27.00 you know, each case is different. 00:17:27.03\00:17:29.81 But each person has to work on that area 00:17:30.00\00:17:32.72 so that they don't go back and they don't 00:17:32.73\00:17:36.45 get overcome by those things. 00:17:36.63\00:17:38.33 And that's where our loving heavenly Father 00:17:38.39\00:17:41.69 and our Elder Brother come in, 00:17:41.70\00:17:43.63 and they just say, "Look. You're My child. 00:17:43.66\00:17:47.06 We're all in the same family. 00:17:47.24\00:17:49.18 I'm never going to let go of you. 00:17:49.24\00:17:51.06 The only way that you can not be successful 00:17:51.18\00:17:53.81 is to jerk your hand out of mine 00:17:53.84\00:17:57.39 and go your separate way, 00:17:57.40\00:17:59.27 and I'll be crying if you do that." 00:17:59.33\00:18:01.48 - Yeah, yeah. 00:18:01.66\00:18:03.60 Thanks for sharing that. I know that 00:18:03.63\00:18:06.81 hits you really deep in the heart. 00:18:07.00\00:18:09.21 Let me ask you this, Doctor. 00:18:09.48\00:18:12.39 With a person like that, can you tell our viewers... 00:18:12.63\00:18:15.42 I know there are many, many people out there 00:18:15.48\00:18:18.12 that are morbidly obese 00:18:18.13\00:18:19.48 in a huge way, pardon the pun. 00:18:19.75\00:18:23.15 But is there really... Can anybody do this? 00:18:23.24\00:18:28.60 Or is this just one case of a guy 00:18:28.69\00:18:31.15 that just happened to luck out? 00:18:31.18\00:18:33.18 Well, the American Diabetic, 00:18:33.69\00:18:36.84 American Dietetic, and American Heart Associations say 00:18:36.87\00:18:40.24 "Go on 1,200 calories." 00:18:40.48\00:18:43.33 And I've asked people that. 00:18:43.69\00:18:45.24 I say, "Have you been able to do this?" 00:18:45.25\00:18:47.39 They say, "Not a chance. 00:18:47.45\00:18:48.78 All I can think about between meals is, 00:18:49.09\00:18:51.45 'When do I get to eat again?'" 00:18:51.46\00:18:53.21 çlaughterÑ You see? 00:18:53.36\00:18:54.63 And he hasn't been overly hungry while he's here 00:18:54.66\00:18:56.75 because of all the fiber in the food, 00:18:56.81\00:18:59.39 it's low-calorie, it's the right kind of fat, 00:18:59.40\00:19:04.30 it's the right kind of proteins. 00:19:04.42\00:19:06.45 And so all of the things that he does 00:19:06.63\00:19:09.09 are being healthy for his body. 00:19:09.10\00:19:11.03 And so, if a person goes on 00:19:11.04\00:19:13.24 the Standard American Diet (SAD), 00:19:13.25\00:19:15.81 then they're getting really calorie-dense foods 00:19:16.18\00:19:19.75 and not much bulk, so they're feeling hungry all the time. 00:19:19.81\00:19:23.03 And this is really the only way that a person can do that: 00:19:23.04\00:19:26.03 whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:19:26.04\00:19:29.51 When they eliminate the oil, 00:19:29.78\00:19:31.42 every one of those tablespoons, teaspoons of oil 00:19:31.43\00:19:34.84 that they have that are free, 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.57 from the other plant food and added to your food, 00:19:36.84\00:19:40.18 it's been liberated out, 00:19:40.24\00:19:41.87 and the fat cells will seek those calories 00:19:42.09\00:19:46.69 and they'll just bring them right back in. 00:19:46.72\00:19:48.39 So this is really the only way that I've seen 00:19:48.54\00:19:51.33 that people can be successful, 00:19:51.34\00:19:53.12 is to eat whole plant foods. 00:19:53.15\00:19:54.78 And then of course we wanted him to exercise. 00:19:54.79\00:19:57.27 And he couldn't! - He couldn't walk. 00:19:57.48\00:20:00.09 Yeah, he couldn't walk. - 30 seconds... 00:20:00.10\00:20:01.45 It was really exciting, 00:20:01.46\00:20:02.60 because finally he was able to walk 00:20:02.61\00:20:04.30 from the clinic all the way up to the flagpole. 00:20:04.54\00:20:07.69 And I was with him the first time. 00:20:07.84\00:20:09.69 And he sat down on the bench in front of the Weimart, 00:20:09.70\00:20:12.72 and he said, "I did it." 00:20:12.84\00:20:14.66 And I said, "You did what?" 00:20:14.75\00:20:16.21 And he said, "I walked all the way from the clinic 00:20:16.24\00:20:18.33 without stopping." 00:20:18.34\00:20:20.06 Most people wouldn't even think about it. 00:20:20.15\00:20:22.30 I gave it a lot of thought because 00:20:22.36\00:20:24.57 as you may recall in my own testimony, 00:20:24.60\00:20:27.15 I couldn't walk the Half Mile Loop either. 00:20:27.18\00:20:29.54 And I wasn't as big as Dave, 00:20:29.57\00:20:31.33 I was just a wreck. 00:20:31.42\00:20:33.00 And then it must have been 2 or 3 days before I could do that. 00:20:33.01\00:20:37.12 So Doctor, what you're saying then 00:20:37.15\00:20:39.69 in answer to my question is, 00:20:39.81\00:20:41.63 it doesn't matter how big you are, 00:20:41.64\00:20:43.63 it doesn't matter if you're on your last leg, 00:20:43.81\00:20:46.60 you could be on your death bed-- 00:20:46.61\00:20:48.30 get here, go on the program, and we can help them. 00:20:48.36\00:20:51.69 That's right. 00:20:51.72\00:20:53.39 And again, I'm so happy that you're following the people up, 00:20:53.40\00:20:56.78 because they appreciate it, and they know that 00:20:57.12\00:20:59.09 somebody's trying to help them, and they're there. 00:20:59.10\00:21:02.06 Well, we'll continue to do that. 00:21:02.42\00:21:04.69 I've been blessed by being given that assignment. 00:21:05.06\00:21:08.21 I get to talk to everybody while they're here 00:21:08.22\00:21:11.00 and then after they leave as well. 00:21:11.03\00:21:12.87 - Well, this is exciting. Thank you Doctor for joining us. 00:21:12.88\00:21:15.81 - I'm really, really happy. 00:21:15.82\00:21:17.06 It's always a pleasure to visit with you. 00:21:17.07\00:21:18.75 - Thank you. 00:21:19.00\00:21:20.09 And thank you for being with us, folks. 00:21:20.27\00:21:22.18 But don't go away, because in a moment 00:21:22.19\00:21:24.48 we have an important tip for you. 00:21:24.49\00:21:28.09 Hello. Welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:41.87\00:21:43.63 We're glad that we can enter your home today 00:21:43.64\00:21:46.06 I'm Don Mackintosh, the host, 00:21:46.09\00:21:47.75 and today we have Dr. Neil Nedley with us. 00:21:47.76\00:21:50.33 We're glad you're here, Doctor. 00:21:50.34\00:21:51.39 Thank you. It's good to be here. 00:21:51.42\00:21:52.87 You're a specialist in not only internal medicine, 00:21:53.12\00:21:56.57 which deals with medical issues of the internal organs 00:21:56.66\00:21:59.66 and the whole system, but also 00:21:59.75\00:22:01.63 preventive medicine, or so-called lifestyle medicine. 00:22:01.66\00:22:05.21 And today we want to talk about lifestyle medicine. 00:22:05.24\00:22:07.57 as it relates to what happens here at the NEWSTART program. 00:22:07.60\00:22:11.12 -Okay. And NEWSTART, of course, 00:22:11.24\00:22:14.66 that acronym-- nutrition, exercise, water, 00:22:14.67\00:22:17.00 and all those different things. 00:22:17.09\00:22:18.39 What are the things that we're learning 00:22:18.42\00:22:20.57 that can help people know 00:22:20.58\00:22:23.21 that this is really something that's going to help them? 00:22:23.27\00:22:25.15 Well you know, interestingly, we used to think of NEWSTART 00:22:25.42\00:22:28.21 as really being a preventive modality. 00:22:28.30\00:22:32.03 Those were the 8 things that could prevent disease. 00:22:32.15\00:22:35.06 And it's true, they do. But we now know that each 00:22:35.24\00:22:37.81 one of those principles can actually be utilized 00:22:37.82\00:22:40.24 in certain diseases to help treat the disease. 00:22:40.25\00:22:43.24 And maybe that's all that's needed. 00:22:43.30\00:22:45.24 to treat the disease and even cure the disease. 00:22:45.27\00:22:48.03 So it's not enough to just prevent. 00:22:48.12\00:22:49.66 It might even reverse. 00:22:49.72\00:22:51.54 That's right. Lifestyle medicine really is different 00:22:51.63\00:22:54.48 from preventive medicine in that lifestyle medicine 00:22:54.49\00:22:57.42 is a lifestyle intervention in the treatment of disease. 00:22:57.69\00:23:02.15 So give me an example. 00:23:02.36\00:23:03.48 We do the sunlight, we do all these different things. 00:23:03.57\00:23:05.54 We have cardiac patients, we have depressed patients. 00:23:05.60\00:23:08.69 What about sunlight? Vitamin D? 00:23:08.78\00:23:10.72 Well vitamin D can help people, 00:23:10.78\00:23:13.21 for instance, that have lung cancer or breast cancer. 00:23:13.30\00:23:16.27 Studies show that if you get breast cancer 00:23:16.45\00:23:19.51 and your vitamin D level stays low, 00:23:19.57\00:23:22.45 you'll have a much higher chance 00:23:22.51\00:23:24.30 of that breast cancer spreading to the lungs. 00:23:24.31\00:23:26.69 If you have breast cancer and you get the vitamin D level up, 00:23:27.06\00:23:30.72 you'll only have a 15 percent chance 00:23:30.73\00:23:32.36 of it spreading to the lungs 00:23:32.37\00:23:33.54 instead of about a 94 percent chance. 00:23:33.55\00:23:35.75 And so you can make a big difference 00:23:36.00\00:23:39.03 just on getting adequate vitamin D. 00:23:39.04\00:23:41.36 And of course, that's through the sun, 00:23:41.54\00:23:43.09 and that should be an intervention. 00:23:43.10\00:23:44.36 Every breast cancer patient should know that. 00:23:44.39\00:23:46.24 If you have breast cancer, 00:23:46.25\00:23:47.30 you need to get your vitamin D level checked. 00:23:47.31\00:23:49.12 because if it's woefully low, 00:23:49.13\00:23:51.24 you need to find a way of getting a lot more vitamin D, 00:23:51.25\00:23:53.72 and it will help your prognosis. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.42 Now most people probably think their vitamin D level is fine, 00:23:55.45\00:23:58.81 but do most people have a problem with low levels? 00:23:58.87\00:24:02.06 Actually, the majority of Americans today 00:24:02.15\00:24:04.09 have problems with low levels. 00:24:04.10\00:24:05.72 And that's simply because we 00:24:05.73\00:24:07.18 don't live in an agricultural society 00:24:07.19\00:24:09.00 where people are outdoors working, like they used to be. 00:24:09.01\00:24:11.42 And so they're primarily indoor people 00:24:11.54\00:24:14.24 and if they are outdoors, it's in the morning or evening 00:24:14.30\00:24:16.54 where there's not enough 00:24:16.55\00:24:17.57 direct sunlight to get vitamin D. 00:24:17.58\00:24:19.63 Other things. What about cardiac patients 00:24:19.81\00:24:23.03 or those that have heart problems. 00:24:23.06\00:24:24.30 What are the lifestyle things that happen here at NEWSTART. 00:24:24.31\00:24:27.63 Well actually, the NEWSTART program has been 00:24:27.78\00:24:30.18 shown to be able to reverse coronary artery disease. 00:24:30.19\00:24:33.66 So if someone has chest pain and angina, 00:24:33.78\00:24:36.06 this is a great place to come. 00:24:36.07\00:24:37.51 And normally, within 5 to 7 days 00:24:37.60\00:24:40.60 their arteries actually begin to relax, 00:24:40.66\00:24:42.87 More blood goes to the arteries. 00:24:42.88\00:24:45.75 And over the course-- if they stay on the program-- 00:24:45.76\00:24:47.78 a year, on the angiograms it will actually improve. 00:24:47.87\00:24:51.03 Those plaques will significantly improve 00:24:51.09\00:24:53.45 in their coronary arteries. 00:24:53.51\00:24:55.21 And so you can actually reverse coronary artery disease 00:24:55.22\00:24:57.63 through NEWSTART principles. 00:24:57.64\00:24:59.12 Of course, if you have chest pain or angina right now 00:24:59.18\00:25:01.27 it might be best to call your doctor or go to the ER, 00:25:01.39\00:25:03.69 but you're saying if it's stable enough 00:25:03.70\00:25:05.69 to come up here then. - That's right. 00:25:05.75\00:25:07.24 Anything else in terms of lifestyle things that we... 00:25:07.45\00:25:10.30 that happen here, like... 00:25:10.36\00:25:12.54 Well I mean, it can treat hypertension. 00:25:12.69\00:25:14.39 High blood pressure can be treated 00:25:14.42\00:25:16.15 through NEWSTART principles. 00:25:16.16\00:25:18.00 Also many other diseases. You mentioned depression. 00:25:18.21\00:25:22.72 Major depression can actually be 00:25:22.75\00:25:24.60 treated through lifestyle principles. 00:25:24.61\00:25:26.84 And then, if you've even had a heart attack 00:25:26.85\00:25:31.51 and you have congestive heart failure, 00:25:31.52\00:25:33.18 the heart can actually get stronger, 00:25:33.19\00:25:35.72 and we can find ways of actually 00:25:36.03\00:25:38.27 preventing the fluid building up in the lungs 00:25:38.33\00:25:40.63 through certain NEWSTART principles. 00:25:40.78\00:25:42.81 So it sounds like NEWSTART is 00:25:42.87\00:25:44.75 kinda like the answer for many things, 00:25:44.76\00:25:46.75 and now we're figuring out why it's the answer. 00:25:46.76\00:25:48.81 That's right. - Yeah. 00:25:48.84\00:25:50.63 So lifestyle is a very powerful thing. 00:25:50.78\00:25:54.39 How long are the programs here? 00:25:54.45\00:25:56.63 Nineteen days. That's the full program. 00:25:56.64\00:25:58.81 And they run those one after the other. 00:25:58.84\00:26:01.15 They run them year-round, and so... 00:26:01.16\00:26:03.75 I tell ya, it's the greatest 19-day investment 00:26:04.18\00:26:08.00 that you can make, is in your health. 00:26:08.01\00:26:10.30 And this will definitely improve your health. 00:26:10.42\00:26:14.30 You know, it's exciting to be here 00:26:14.48\00:26:15.87 and see some of the changes in people's lives. 00:26:15.88\00:26:18.24 - Absolutely. 00:26:18.36\00:26:19.66 Well, we hope that what you've learned today 00:26:19.67\00:26:21.75 is helpful to you. It's been helpful to me. 00:26:21.81\00:26:23.57 And if you or someone you know needs the NEWSTART program, 00:26:23.60\00:26:26.87 let them know about the program. 00:26:26.88\00:26:28.21 Let them know about the people here, 00:26:28.24\00:26:30.00 like Doctor Nedley and others that are serving, 00:26:30.01\00:26:32.12 and just the good old lifestyle things 00:26:32.33\00:26:34.57 that they could be involved in. 00:26:34.58\00:26:35.72 Go to our website: 00:26:35.75\00:26:36.78 We're glad you joined us, 00:26:37.84\00:26:39.24 and we hope that as a result you have a new start 00:26:39.33\00:26:41.30 that starts today. 00:26:41.39\00:26:43.00 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:50.60\00:26:53.21 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:53.24\00:26:55.63 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:56.30\00:26:59.60 our educational system today. 00:26:59.63\00:27:01.78 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:27:02.42\00:27:04.69 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:05.15\00:27:07.06 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:07.07\00:27:09.72 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:09.75\00:27:11.72 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:12.27\00:27:14.72 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:14.73\00:27:17.57 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:17.72\00:27:20.21 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:20.30\00:27:22.75 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:23.09\00:27:25.54 long since passed. 00:27:25.55\00:27:27.03 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:28.30\00:27:31.54 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:31.63\00:27:35.63 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:36.00\00:27:38.36 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:51.42\00:27:53.09 I'm glad you joined us, 00:27:53.12\00:27:54.30 and I hope you enjoyed the program. 00:27:54.31\00:27:56.42 Pick up that phone now and give us a call at: 00:27:56.72\00:27:58.84 Have a wonderful day, and God bless you. 00:28:03.39\00:28:06.15
