Hi friends, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:23.87\00:00:27.33 I'm your host, Ron Giannoni. 00:00:27.45\00:00:29.78 In our studio today we have an unusual story 00:00:30.03\00:00:33.00 of a gentleman who 00:00:33.09\00:00:35.27 came to us after having a heart attack 00:00:35.57\00:00:38.30 just about a month ago. 00:00:38.36\00:00:40.33 So before I get into this story, 00:00:40.69\00:00:43.00 let's watch a segment of when he first arrived, 00:00:43.03\00:00:45.66 and let Paul tell you about it. 00:00:46.00\00:00:48.33 I woke up in early December 00:00:49.39\00:00:52.06 with pains in both my arms 00:00:52.24\00:00:54.66 which progressed into my chest. 00:00:54.81\00:00:57.06 I suspected heart attack, 00:00:57.45\00:00:59.30 and was taken to the hospital emergency. 00:00:59.31\00:01:01.51 They took a couple EKGs, 00:01:02.00\00:01:03.81 confirmed I was having an attack at the time, 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.24 put in one stent, 00:01:06.39\00:01:07.72 later wanted to put in a second one, 00:01:07.84\00:01:09.75 and I didn't want that done. 00:01:09.78\00:01:11.00 I didn't want to be on medication. 00:01:11.12\00:01:12.57 So that's why I'm here 00:01:12.69\00:01:14.36 with this process to reverse that condition. 00:01:14.37\00:01:17.09 I'm currently taking four medications for my heart 00:01:17.57\00:01:20.09 that were given to me at the time of attack. 00:01:20.12\00:01:22.18 I want to get off of those, 00:01:22.69\00:01:25.03 and I want to get into this process 00:01:25.39\00:01:28.21 so that I can reverse all this heart problem. 00:01:28.24\00:01:30.69 Welcome back, friends. 00:01:32.18\00:01:33.84 In our studio we have Paul Curtis. 00:01:34.21\00:01:37.24 Paul, how are you? Good. 00:01:37.30\00:01:39.00 Good to see you. 00:01:39.24\00:01:40.72 So, you came here after having a heart attack. 00:01:41.21\00:01:44.48 What's interesting to me is I had one also, 00:01:44.57\00:01:48.30 but unlike you I didn't go to the doctor. 00:01:48.54\00:01:51.03 I just thought it was gas or something. 00:01:51.18\00:01:53.36 But tell us about that event 00:01:53.57\00:01:56.51 when you went to the cardiologist. 00:01:56.52\00:01:59.69 What did he tell you to do, etc? 00:01:59.70\00:02:02.03 You mean after he put in the stent or before? 00:02:03.21\00:02:06.51 Yes, afterwards. 00:02:06.60\00:02:07.78 He said there wasn't a whole lot he could tell me, 00:02:08.03\00:02:10.15 because I'm not the usual type of patient. 00:02:10.24\00:02:13.15 I wasn't overweight. 00:02:13.27\00:02:14.54 My total cholesterol was pretty normal for them. 00:02:14.84\00:02:18.69 They thought anything under 200 is okay. 00:02:18.81\00:02:20.57 Mine was 163. 00:02:20.63\00:02:22.54 And so he said, "I don't know really what to tell you. 00:02:23.15\00:02:25.39 Your blood pressure's not that high. 00:02:25.54\00:02:28.18 It's elevated, but it's not that bad." 00:02:28.19\00:02:30.39 So he gave me these medications, 00:02:30.54\00:02:33.09 these four medications to take, 00:02:33.33\00:02:35.03 He wanted to see me back. 00:02:35.36\00:02:36.57 He wanted to do another stent in two days, 00:02:36.63\00:02:38.51 and I told him no. 00:02:38.52\00:02:39.87 Good for you. 00:02:39.88\00:02:41.54 And then he wanted to do a stent maybe in a month. 00:02:41.57\00:02:44.09 And I said, "Well, maybe. We'll see about that." 00:02:44.36\00:02:47.12 I wanted to look up some other possibilities first 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.57 that I wanted to try out that were normal corrections, 00:02:49.66\00:02:52.12 which is why I came to this place. 00:02:52.51\00:02:55.18 Now, do you think that it was an advantage for you, 00:02:55.57\00:02:58.81 being a doctor, 00:02:59.39\00:03:01.00 the way you handled the situation 00:03:01.33\00:03:04.24 when you rushed to the emergency hospital? 00:03:04.25\00:03:07.87 Oh yeah. I don't think there's any question about that, 00:03:08.36\00:03:11.27 because I recognized what was going on. 00:03:11.28\00:03:13.78 The biggest problem was I'd had a few symptoms 00:03:14.21\00:03:16.48 just a few days before. 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.15 They were not typical, 00:03:18.45\00:03:20.27 and so I didn't recognize those. 00:03:20.51\00:03:22.39 But the morning that I had the attack 00:03:22.42\00:03:24.78 there was no question about it. 00:03:24.79\00:03:26.72 I went into shock, 00:03:26.81\00:03:27.87 and I immediately checked my blood pressure, 00:03:28.12\00:03:29.60 which was down on the floor. 00:03:29.66\00:03:31.45 So I knew I was in trouble. 00:03:31.57\00:03:34.15 I got the nausea, the shock reaction. 00:03:34.16\00:03:37.00 So I immediately knew what it was. 00:03:37.15\00:03:38.78 And that's why I could take advantage 00:03:39.09\00:03:41.00 of getting to the hospital in time. 00:03:41.01\00:03:42.69 I really didn't have the worst part of the attack 00:03:43.09\00:03:45.66 till I was sitting on their table. 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.15 Ah, okay. 00:03:47.24\00:03:48.84 So I was right there, ready to go to work. 00:03:48.85\00:03:50.33 So fortunately, they were there watching 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.63 and they gave you the necessary medications 00:03:52.72\00:03:55.84 to help open up the arteries and such. 00:03:56.03\00:03:59.39 Okay, so now you come to 00:03:59.57\00:04:01.72 the NEWSTART program at Weimar here, 00:04:01.78\00:04:04.18 which is about a month later, 00:04:04.51\00:04:06.33 a month and a half later, 00:04:06.34\00:04:07.78 in hopes to change 00:04:08.00\00:04:10.42 whatever condition is going on. 00:04:10.57\00:04:13.63 I guess after talking to Doctor Ing, 00:04:14.54\00:04:18.03 your situation is an unusual one. 00:04:18.15\00:04:22.18 You look healthy, 00:04:22.54\00:04:23.81 you're not overweight, 00:04:23.82\00:04:25.21 you eat properly, 00:04:25.27\00:04:26.84 and you had this experience. 00:04:26.87\00:04:28.78 Now they've got you on these medications which 00:04:28.79\00:04:31.78 I've stopped using all of them myself, 00:04:32.12\00:04:35.75 and I know that in time you will as well. 00:04:35.81\00:04:39.03 Tell us about, 00:04:39.04\00:04:40.30 out of the four medications, 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.06 are you on still all four medications today? 00:04:42.15\00:04:45.60 One of them I've discontinued 00:04:46.24\00:04:49.00 just on my own, 00:04:49.15\00:04:50.66 because I think it's somewhat worthless. 00:04:51.09\00:04:53.30 I don't know whether we need to name it. 00:04:53.31\00:04:55.48 But I'm on three of them still. 00:04:55.69\00:04:58.24 One of them is just an aspirin, 00:04:58.25\00:04:59.54 so it's no big deal. 00:04:59.55\00:05:01.51 And the other two I plan to get off of relatively soon. 00:05:01.84\00:05:05.63 I'm gonna stay on it a little while. 00:05:05.72\00:05:07.03 I have a thallium treadmill 00:05:07.06\00:05:08.87 ordered by the cardiologist 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.15 for June the 30th. 00:05:11.27\00:05:13.12 And I may stay on them that long, I'm not sure, 00:05:13.13\00:05:16.00 until I do that. 00:05:16.33\00:05:18.48 But I've already improved my stats, 00:05:18.69\00:05:21.51 so I plan on improving them to where 00:05:21.57\00:05:23.63 it kind of blows the cardiologist 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.24 away when he sees them. 00:05:25.25\00:05:26.60 He's not going to be real happy with you 00:05:26.75\00:05:28.45 when you tell him you stopped. 00:05:28.57\00:05:30.06 "No, he's not going to get that other surgery, I hope." 00:05:30.18\00:05:32.21 Now, talking about the treadmill test, 00:05:33.18\00:05:38.33 you've had two since you've been here, right? 00:05:38.36\00:05:40.78 Correct. 00:05:40.81\00:05:41.87 How did you fare on the second treadmill test, 00:05:42.00\00:05:45.54 which was yesterday? 00:05:45.75\00:05:47.09 Actually, I passed both of them. 00:05:47.27\00:05:50.39 Really? 00:05:50.57\00:05:51.57 Yeah, that's what's strange about this whole thing. 00:05:51.63\00:05:54.63 I haven't had any pain since I had the stent put in, 00:05:54.84\00:05:58.45 treadmill or otherwise. 00:05:58.54\00:06:00.63 I've been walking pretty much 00:06:00.72\00:06:02.42 four miles a day since I got here. 00:06:02.43\00:06:04.33 So it's... 00:06:04.39\00:06:07.06 Everybody kind of just shakes their head. 00:06:07.30\00:06:09.30 They don't know what to say about it. 00:06:09.33\00:06:10.69 So Doctor Ing tells us 00:06:11.06\00:06:13.39 that prior to you coming, 00:06:13.60\00:06:15.75 you called him and spoke with him on the phone. 00:06:15.81\00:06:18.12 You weren't sure about the program here 00:06:18.36\00:06:21.09 and whether it would help your situation or not. 00:06:21.10\00:06:24.15 By the way, I called Doctor Ing too before I came. 00:06:24.42\00:06:28.15 But tell us, if you would, 00:06:28.24\00:06:31.87 is it meeting your expectations? 00:06:32.48\00:06:35.18 Yes, I think it's met everything that I wanted to do. 00:06:35.69\00:06:39.06 Doctors have a tendency to be a little hesitant on some things 00:06:39.48\00:06:43.51 because it puts them in a bad light with the cardiologist 00:06:43.81\00:06:46.27 you're under at home. 00:06:46.33\00:06:47.87 So you have to be a little guarded on that. 00:06:48.12\00:06:50.00 I understand that as a doctor. You can't be 00:06:50.03\00:06:52.30 going out of bounds and creating problems. 00:06:52.81\00:06:55.72 That's fine. I understand, no problem. 00:06:56.06\00:06:58.87 One thing I would like to say, 00:06:59.36\00:07:01.81 that I was raised a total vegetarian. 00:07:02.06\00:07:04.81 That was another thing that was strange about all of this. 00:07:05.06\00:07:07.63 Now, vegetarian... Explain to us what you mean. 00:07:07.87\00:07:10.84 Well, vegetarian meaning no animals 00:07:11.03\00:07:12.75 as such, but it doesn't exclude 00:07:12.84\00:07:15.54 animal products--milk, ice cream, cheese, etc. 00:07:15.84\00:07:19.24 And basically those elements can be as bad for you 00:07:19.39\00:07:22.33 as meat itself. 00:07:22.42\00:07:24.18 So that's where I messed up, 00:07:24.45\00:07:25.84 and that's where this all comes from, I believe. 00:07:25.85\00:07:28.27 So now you have opted to not only be vegetarian, 00:07:29.09\00:07:33.30 but vegan, right? Absolutely. 00:07:33.36\00:07:35.15 A plant based diet, whole plants eaten whole. 00:07:35.18\00:07:38.42 Correct. 00:07:38.43\00:07:39.63 Well, have you lost any weight since you've been here? 00:07:39.75\00:07:42.87 A pound, pound and a half or whatever. 00:07:44.12\00:07:46.81 But I didn't need to lose weight, so... 00:07:47.00\00:07:49.15 I just wondered how you would... 00:07:49.24\00:07:51.03 I almost always, my whole life, 00:07:51.33\00:07:53.39 I've always been in a perfect band where I should be. 00:07:53.54\00:07:56.15 I usually stay between 160 and 170. 00:07:56.21\00:07:59.30 And if I get over 170 it's because 00:07:59.51\00:08:01.45 I've been eating a lot of junk 00:08:01.46\00:08:02.45 and I'll just back off for a couple of days, 00:08:02.60\00:08:04.36 and I'm back in the bracket again. 00:08:04.37\00:08:05.66 So I've never had a problem with weight. 00:08:06.24\00:08:08.03 So your BMI is in line? 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.21 Yeah, everything's fine. Okay, good. 00:08:10.33\00:08:12.33 What about the food? 00:08:12.78\00:08:14.66 The adjustment from going to 00:08:14.75\00:08:17.60 vegan rather than vegetarian. 00:08:17.87\00:08:20.06 Any problem with that? 00:08:20.18\00:08:21.18 Probably easier for me because 00:08:21.21\00:08:23.06 of the vegetarian start. 00:08:23.15\00:08:24.72 I don't have to stop the meats and all that stuff. 00:08:25.00\00:08:27.21 It is difficult otherwise 00:08:27.45\00:08:29.12 because I loved ice cream, 00:08:29.13\00:08:31.06 and I love pizza, 00:08:31.07\00:08:32.66 and I love a bunch of stuff you're not supposed to be doing. 00:08:32.72\00:08:35.30 And you've either got to decide to do it or don't do it. 00:08:35.54\00:08:38.72 You can't do halfway and expect success, 00:08:38.75\00:08:42.03 so I'm going to do it all the way. 00:08:42.36\00:08:43.63 And I've already seen some results. 00:08:43.75\00:08:45.81 Now I know we've had pizza here since you've been here. 00:08:46.03\00:08:49.03 Did you share in that? 00:08:49.09\00:08:51.54 Yeah, but there's no cheese on it. 00:08:51.78\00:08:53.18 Well, of course. çlaughterÑ 00:08:53.39\00:08:54.81 What did you think of it without the cheese? 00:08:55.06\00:08:57.15 Edible. çlaughterÑ 00:08:57.33\00:08:59.24 Now I was raised Italian 00:08:59.27\00:09:01.48 in an Italian neighborhood, 00:09:01.57\00:09:03.54 and pizza was like our... 00:09:03.63\00:09:05.54 I had it every day. 00:09:05.75\00:09:07.75 My wife is Italian. 00:09:07.76\00:09:08.84 So yeah, so you know the drill. 00:09:09.12\00:09:11.45 I found it very difficult to give up my cheese, 00:09:11.69\00:09:14.84 but now that I'm off of it for a few years, 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.57 I have no problem with it. 00:09:19.06\00:09:20.60 No big deal. 00:09:20.84\00:09:22.00 But every once in a while I'll smell that cheese, 00:09:22.21\00:09:25.72 cooking in a restaurant or whatever. 00:09:25.87\00:09:28.48 Anyway, you're doing good. 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.66 Are there any particular other ailments 00:09:30.69\00:09:34.24 that you had that you'd like to share? 00:09:34.27\00:09:36.06 No, but throughout my life I hardly every get sick. 00:09:36.48\00:09:40.45 I think there was like 35 years 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.36 I never saw a doctor for anything. 00:09:42.37\00:09:44.30 And then I went down and got a baseline 00:09:45.06\00:09:47.78 just to see if I'm still alive, 00:09:47.84\00:09:49.63 and that's when I discovered 00:09:49.87\00:09:51.03 my cholesterol was higher than I wanted it. 00:09:51.06\00:09:53.21 It's within normal range for a lot of doctors. 00:09:53.30\00:09:55.78 They say 200 is okay, 00:09:55.84\00:09:57.48 total cholesterol, and mine was 211. 00:09:57.54\00:10:00.27 But I was able to reduce that to 158 00:10:00.45\00:10:03.66 just by knocking out animal products, 00:10:04.00\00:10:07.36 such as cheese and milk. 00:10:07.42\00:10:09.30 Good, good. 00:10:09.45\00:10:11.03 We're running out of time and I have to bid you good day. 00:10:11.04\00:10:13.72 Thank you for joining us. 00:10:13.73\00:10:15.15 You're welcome. Glad we could help. 00:10:15.16\00:10:16.36 And friends, thank you for joining us. 00:10:16.63\00:10:18.36 Don't go away! Doctor Ing's going to be with us in a moment. 00:10:18.39\00:10:21.33 Well, you've done very well. 00:10:23.12\00:10:24.75 Do you have diabetes, 00:10:31.18\00:10:32.45 heart disease, high blood pressure, 00:10:32.46\00:10:34.54 or do you weigh too much? 00:10:35.09\00:10:36.39 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 00:10:37.27\00:10:40.06 about our 18-day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:10:40.07\00:10:43.03 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:10:43.66\00:10:46.42 with laboratory studies 00:10:46.43\00:10:47.72 and an exercise stress test, 00:10:48.15\00:10:49.69 physician consultations, 00:10:50.24\00:10:51.87 culinary school, 00:10:52.60\00:10:53.78 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful trails 00:10:54.33\00:10:57.27 in the foothills of the Sierras. 00:10:57.28\00:10:59.27 Your health is one of the most 00:11:01.33\00:11:02.75 important things that you have. Don't wait. 00:11:02.76\00:11:04.78 Give us a call at: 00:11:05.33\00:11:07.06 Or visit our website: 00:11:10.06\00:11:11.36 Welcome back, friends, 00:11:29.18\00:11:30.18 and in our studio we have Dr. Clarence Ing. 00:11:30.21\00:11:33.09 Doctor Ing is our director here of 00:11:33.45\00:11:37.27 the medical facilities. 00:11:37.42\00:11:38.57 Is that what go by? 00:11:38.60\00:11:39.72 Correct me if I'm wrong. 00:11:39.81\00:11:41.09 Well, medical director for the NEWSTART program. 00:11:41.18\00:11:44.42 Good to have you here, as usual. 00:11:44.81\00:11:47.00 I want to talk about Paul. 00:11:47.36\00:11:49.57 Now, when I interviewed Paul 00:11:50.21\00:11:53.09 when he first got here, 00:11:53.27\00:11:54.51 he was explaining this 00:11:54.57\00:11:56.39 episode that he had-- 00:11:56.40\00:11:58.06 I'm going to call it an 00:11:58.15\00:11:59.78 episode-- early December. 00:12:00.12\00:12:02.03 And he was wise enough to get himself to the hospital. 00:12:02.27\00:12:06.42 Otherwise he might have had a serious problem. 00:12:06.60\00:12:09.72 But tell us a little bit more about those events. 00:12:09.87\00:12:13.42 Well, heart attacks occur 00:12:13.78\00:12:16.66 in many, many Americans, unfortunately. 00:12:16.81\00:12:19.69 And oftentimes, the first symptom that a male has 00:12:20.06\00:12:25.87 is the heart attack. 00:12:25.88\00:12:27.72 And unfortunately, maybe 25 to 30 percent of them 00:12:28.18\00:12:31.27 never survive more than 24 hours of their first heart attack, 00:12:31.30\00:12:33.84 so it's really too late. 00:12:34.09\00:12:35.30 So 25 to 30 percent, 00:12:35.42\00:12:37.12 the first one, BANG-- that's it. 00:12:37.15\00:12:38.84 Yeah, they die. 00:12:38.85\00:12:40.27 And within 24 hours. 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.69 So it's not good. 00:12:41.70\00:12:42.84 You really need to be aware of this 00:12:43.00\00:12:44.60 and be aware of some of the risk factors for heart disease. 00:12:44.84\00:12:48.48 Now, excuse me for, I keep interrupting, 00:12:48.60\00:12:51.72 but how many risk factors did he have? 00:12:51.84\00:12:54.45 He seemed to be fairly lean, fairly active. 00:12:54.66\00:12:57.75 Tell us about that, as well. 00:12:58.30\00:13:00.24 Well one risk factor, he was male. 00:13:00.33\00:13:02.06 Ahhh. 00:13:02.27\00:13:04.03 And even though he was on a vegetarian diet, 00:13:04.21\00:13:08.66 he was on what we call a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. 00:13:08.72\00:13:12.15 And a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet includes 00:13:12.54\00:13:15.42 things like eggs, 00:13:15.48\00:13:16.81 which have yolks which are high in cholesterol, 00:13:17.00\00:13:19.45 and it also includes dairy products and milk. 00:13:19.63\00:13:23.33 Of course, whole milk has fat and cholesterol. 00:13:23.39\00:13:28.57 Even non-fat milk has a very small amount of cholesterol. 00:13:28.75\00:13:33.03 And you know, they say low-fat is 2 percent, 1 percent. 00:13:33.18\00:13:37.03 Well whole milk is only about 3 percent. 00:13:37.15\00:13:39.87 So when they go to 2 percent milk and 1 percent, 00:13:40.24\00:13:43.03 that's really not the way you want to go. 00:13:43.04\00:13:45.21 And the other thing is, a lot of people 00:13:45.45\00:13:47.69 say they eat cheese. 00:13:47.84\00:13:50.09 There's cheese... 00:13:50.10\00:13:51.09 And he had all this. 00:13:51.10\00:13:52.33 He was eating cheese and milk and eggs and... 00:13:52.34\00:13:55.12 Yeah. Probably more cheese. 00:13:55.24\00:13:57.12 He said he ate eggs occasionally, 00:13:57.21\00:13:59.06 but probably more cheese. 00:13:59.27\00:14:01.00 As I recall, cheese was several times a week. 00:14:01.09\00:14:05.21 Was he exercising like he does now? 00:14:05.69\00:14:09.00 Yes, he was exercising. 00:14:09.01\00:14:10.30 But the thing about cheese is, 00:14:10.54\00:14:12.12 cheese is deadlier or worse for you than meat, 00:14:12.18\00:14:15.51 so-called red meat, 00:14:15.60\00:14:17.66 because ounce for ounce, or gram for gram, 00:14:17.84\00:14:21.84 cheese had more saturated fat and more cholesterol 00:14:22.12\00:14:25.54 than the same amount of red meat. 00:14:25.72\00:14:29.30 So that's something that people don't realize. 00:14:29.45\00:14:32.63 Of course, usually they eat smaller amounts of cheese 00:14:32.75\00:14:35.57 than they do the red meat, 00:14:35.75\00:14:37.30 but cheese you've really got to be careful with. 00:14:37.42\00:14:41.12 Many lacto-ovo vegetarians 00:14:41.60\00:14:43.87 tend to use cheese too freely, especially with 00:14:44.18\00:14:47.27 the ethnic foods, like Mexican foods. 00:14:47.48\00:14:50.09 Lots of them contain cheese. 00:14:50.24\00:14:52.42 And you know, cheese tastes good for the people who like it. 00:14:52.72\00:14:56.06 They do have soy cheeses, 00:14:56.21\00:14:59.87 but even some of the soy cheeses have casein in them, 00:15:00.21\00:15:02.75 which is milk protein. 00:15:02.76\00:15:04.36 And the milk protein actually, 00:15:04.45\00:15:06.72 when compared with soy protein, raises cholesterol 00:15:06.87\00:15:09.60 when compared with soy protein. 00:15:09.61\00:15:11.75 So soy protein is preferable to regular milk. 00:15:12.06\00:15:15.63 So how is Paul doing on the program? 00:15:16.06\00:15:18.33 Let's talk about some of the benefits that... 00:15:18.36\00:15:20.51 He's still taking all of the medications that 00:15:20.72\00:15:23.21 he was when he first arrived? 00:15:23.22\00:15:24.51 His medications really haven't been changed. 00:15:24.63\00:15:27.54 He's been walking. 00:15:27.57\00:15:29.03 He now realizes the importance of 00:15:29.24\00:15:32.15 a totally plant-based diet, 00:15:32.36\00:15:34.24 whole plant foods approach. 00:15:34.27\00:15:37.72 So he's happy to say goodbye to 00:15:38.00\00:15:42.09 cheese and dairy products and eggs and things like that. 00:15:42.33\00:15:46.09 So he's a believer. 00:15:46.24\00:15:47.39 Oh yes, absolutely. 00:15:47.45\00:15:48.57 He's a pretty bright guy. 00:15:48.69\00:15:50.00 He is a doctor too, a podiatrist, I understand. 00:15:50.03\00:15:53.51 But he's had some medical training 00:15:53.84\00:15:57.12 so he probably took to this real well, 00:15:57.24\00:16:00.36 wouldn't you say? - Oh yes. 00:16:00.37\00:16:01.45 Once he realized that it was important-- 00:16:01.51\00:16:04.36 because actually, before he ever came, 00:16:04.48\00:16:06.72 I got a call from our guest services 00:16:06.87\00:16:09.51 that there was a gentleman who 00:16:09.75\00:16:13.18 wanted to get some information, 00:16:13.21\00:16:14.87 wanted to know if a lifestyle program 00:16:15.06\00:16:17.27 could reverse heart disease. 00:16:17.28\00:16:18.87 So I had an opportunity to talk with Paul before 00:16:19.21\00:16:23.63 and tell him about some of the studies that have been done. 00:16:24.03\00:16:27.12 Probably one of the more important studies 00:16:27.30\00:16:29.24 was one done by Dr. Dean Ornish, 00:16:29.25\00:16:31.12 which was reported in Lancet medical journal 00:16:31.15\00:16:33.75 in the early '90s, 00:16:33.76\00:16:34.87 showing that with lifestyle changes 00:16:35.15\00:16:37.00 very similar to what we do here at Weimar... 00:16:37.09\00:16:39.09 With angiograms of coronary arteries before 00:16:39.33\00:16:43.75 and several years after 00:16:43.87\00:16:45.57 with the people following this type of program, 00:16:45.63\00:16:48.00 they're able to get those arteries... 00:16:48.03\00:16:50.48 get some of that plaque reabsorbed 00:16:50.57\00:16:52.33 and their arteries open up. 00:16:52.34\00:16:53.57 So it's been worthwhile. 00:16:53.87\00:16:55.06 So he's reducing his medications? 00:16:55.39\00:16:59.69 In time he probably will reduce those, 00:16:59.78\00:17:04.00 but that's going to be something he's going to 00:17:04.03\00:17:05.45 talk over with his cardiologist. 00:17:05.46\00:17:06.87 But he's beginning to get an idea 00:17:07.00\00:17:08.63 what he needs to be on and why he needs to be on it 00:17:08.84\00:17:11.15 and what value it is. 00:17:11.21\00:17:12.36 The other thing was, 00:17:12.51\00:17:14.18 after his heart attack and they put a stent in, 00:17:14.39\00:17:18.66 as he would relate to you, 00:17:18.67\00:17:20.42 they wanted to put another stent in 00:17:20.43\00:17:22.48 several days later, and he said, 00:17:22.69\00:17:25.00 "Thank you, but no." He says, 00:17:25.45\00:17:27.51 "I want to do it another way." 00:17:27.60\00:17:29.12 I want to talk about this stent for a minute 00:17:29.30\00:17:31.36 because I've read, and maybe 00:17:31.51\00:17:34.36 I read it in Doctor Calwell's book, 00:17:34.51\00:17:36.51 about how the stent, when they put it in, 00:17:36.66\00:17:39.24 if people do not change their lifestyle, 00:17:39.36\00:17:42.24 they're just going to clog up again. 00:17:42.30\00:17:44.21 Is this your understanding? 00:17:44.33\00:17:46.27 Well, yeah, this is true. 00:17:46.28\00:17:47.54 Even when they first started transplanting hearts 00:17:47.84\00:17:51.06 many, many years ago, Dr. Christiaan Barnard 00:17:51.09\00:17:53.54 in South Africa, when they started to do this, 00:17:53.72\00:17:55.78 they didn't have people change their diets. 00:17:56.12\00:17:58.15 And if they don't change their diets, 00:17:58.33\00:17:59.72 Whatever caused coronary arteriosclerosis 00:17:59.78\00:18:03.00 is just going to repeat. 00:18:03.01\00:18:04.09 And if you get an angioplasty or a stent now, 00:18:04.24\00:18:07.72 if you don't change your diet 00:18:07.73\00:18:10.06 they're just going to plug up again. 00:18:10.18\00:18:12.18 Sometimes in some cases, 00:18:12.54\00:18:16.18 maybe 30 percent of them will get 00:18:16.27\00:18:18.15 renarrowed or restenosed 00:18:18.24\00:18:20.09 within 6 to 10 weeks after the initial procedure. 00:18:20.27\00:18:23.48 So this has been a real challenge. 00:18:23.60\00:18:25.66 So whether patients have had stents or not, 00:18:25.78\00:18:28.45 they've got to make changes in their lifestyle. 00:18:28.46\00:18:30.39 And we've had patients come here 00:18:30.66\00:18:32.48 two days after they've had a stent put in. 00:18:32.66\00:18:35.12 So we're happy to work with them 00:18:35.39\00:18:37.33 and we know that we can help them, 00:18:37.34\00:18:39.27 providing when they go home 00:18:39.42\00:18:41.66 they continue to practice and to follow 00:18:42.00\00:18:43.66 the same principles that they've learned here. 00:18:43.69\00:18:46.00 Now we've talked about exercise and food intake. 00:18:46.27\00:18:50.84 Let's talk about NEWSTART and the acronym. 00:18:51.18\00:18:54.12 The N is for nutrition, - Correct. 00:18:54.30\00:18:56.87 E for exercise, - Right. 00:18:57.09\00:18:58.72 W for water, 00:18:59.03\00:19:00.69 S for sunshine, 00:19:00.84\00:19:02.57 T for temperance, 00:19:02.66\00:19:04.12 Temperance means using nothing which is harmful or bad, 00:19:04.21\00:19:07.12 Yes. You know, like, 00:19:07.13\00:19:08.39 tobacco and alcohol, 00:19:08.45\00:19:10.51 also caffeinated beverages, 00:19:10.66\00:19:12.69 and using in moderation the good things. 00:19:12.72\00:19:14.84 So you get balance. 00:19:15.09\00:19:16.36 Avoid the things that are bad. - And you have air. 00:19:16.57\00:19:18.00 Yeah, air. 00:19:18.03\00:19:19.21 And rest. - Rest. 00:19:19.39\00:19:20.75 And then trust in divine power. - Right. 00:19:21.00\00:19:23.54 Would you suggest that all of these are important, 00:19:28.78\00:19:31.18 or is there just one you could pick out? 00:19:31.24\00:19:34.12 What would you say to our folks that are watching the program 00:19:34.81\00:19:38.15 that they can start right now? 00:19:38.33\00:19:39.75 Well, they're all important because 00:19:40.15\00:19:42.36 the motto of my medical school, Loma Linda University, 00:19:42.37\00:19:45.21 is "To make man whole." 00:19:45.24\00:19:46.63 That's physically, mentally, and spiritually. 00:19:46.72\00:19:48.66 Whole person care. 00:19:48.67\00:19:50.06 And if I just deal with an individual's 00:19:50.36\00:19:53.30 physical problems and aches and pains 00:19:53.31\00:19:55.30 and never find out what his emotional mental problems are, 00:19:55.42\00:20:00.54 and don't tell them about the help 00:20:00.66\00:20:04.03 that God is willing to offer to people 00:20:04.04\00:20:06.78 who need to make some lifestyle changes, 00:20:06.87\00:20:09.42 I'm doing them a disservice. 00:20:09.51\00:20:10.87 Because it's really hard for most people 00:20:11.00\00:20:13.84 to not overeat, because food tastes good. 00:20:13.87\00:20:17.21 Many people are addicted to food, 00:20:17.24\00:20:18.81 and they need some extra help. 00:20:19.09\00:20:20.78 And that's where God can come in if they will 00:20:20.87\00:20:22.75 talk to Him and ask Him for that. 00:20:23.00\00:20:24.60 So you're saying that when people... 00:20:25.09\00:20:28.72 if they're watching this at home, 00:20:28.81\00:20:30.42 they should initiate all these principles 00:20:30.63\00:20:33.45 and stick to every one of them. 00:20:33.48\00:20:34.72 Right. Whole plant foods, regular exercise. 00:20:34.75\00:20:37.45 If you want to lose weight, 00:20:37.60\00:20:38.66 stop your evening meal. 00:20:38.78\00:20:40.06 That's an important aspect of it. 00:20:40.12\00:20:41.69 It makes it a lot easier to control weight 00:20:41.84\00:20:43.72 and to lose your weight if you don't eat after 00:20:43.78\00:20:46.18 2 o'clock in the afternoon. 00:20:46.36\00:20:48.48 Much easier. 00:20:48.63\00:20:49.63 So has Paul had any other conditions 00:20:49.72\00:20:52.60 that he's dealing with while he's been here? 00:20:52.63\00:20:54.33 No, the primary one is his concern about his heart. 00:20:54.75\00:20:58.12 Otherwise, he's been doing pretty well. 00:20:58.21\00:21:00.36 Good. 00:21:00.69\00:21:01.72 Doctor Ing, as usual, 00:21:02.12\00:21:04.39 I want to thank you for being here. 00:21:04.51\00:21:06.21 It's such a pleasure to see you. 00:21:06.51\00:21:08.84 I know I see you on campus, 00:21:09.06\00:21:11.21 but there's something different about being on the set 00:21:11.39\00:21:14.24 and chatting with you like this. 00:21:14.25\00:21:15.54 Thank you very much. 00:21:15.60\00:21:16.63 It's great to be here. 00:21:16.66\00:21:18.00 And folks, I want to thank you for joining us. 00:21:18.36\00:21:20.87 We have an important message for you 00:21:21.12\00:21:23.57 in just a few minutes. 00:21:23.75\00:21:25.09 So don't go away. We'll be right back. 00:21:25.10\00:21:27.42 Welcome to NEWSTART Now. My name is Cathy, 00:21:41.72\00:21:43.84 and today we have with us Dr. Eddie Ramirez. 00:21:43.87\00:21:46.36 Doctor, thank you for joining us. 00:21:46.45\00:21:47.78 Hi. Thank you for inviting me. 00:21:47.81\00:21:49.24 Well, I'm glad that you're here. 00:21:49.25\00:21:50.24 Today we're going to discuss intimacy. 00:21:50.25\00:21:52.00 Share a little bit about what you want to share. 00:21:52.03\00:21:53.33 Yeah, you know, when certain cultures come here 00:21:53.63\00:21:57.87 to the United States of America, 00:21:58.00\00:22:00.06 they like the work, 00:22:00.07\00:22:01.72 they like the freedoms 00:22:01.73\00:22:04.87 that are here in this country. 00:22:05.00\00:22:06.78 But something they don't like is the fact that 00:22:06.84\00:22:10.54 many times intimacy lacks. 00:22:10.66\00:22:12.87 What do I mean by that? 00:22:13.42\00:22:14.72 Many of these cultures 00:22:14.87\00:22:17.30 are used to a more close society 00:22:17.42\00:22:21.42 in which there's more dependence 00:22:21.66\00:22:25.12 upon one and another. 00:22:25.15\00:22:26.60 Here in America, you know very well that 00:22:27.00\00:22:30.39 you start growing up, 00:22:30.60\00:22:32.24 and after passing your teen years 00:22:32.45\00:22:35.66 your parents start telling you-- 00:22:35.69\00:22:37.06 in many homes, not in all of them-- 00:22:37.18\00:22:39.03 "Hey, it's time to move on." 00:22:39.12\00:22:42.24 Well, you go to other countries in the world 00:22:42.51\00:22:45.33 and you will see that there's an extended family 00:22:45.39\00:22:48.51 living in the same household. 00:22:48.54\00:22:51.57 So this spirit of independence, 00:22:52.12\00:22:55.54 yes, it's healthy, it's good. 00:22:55.63\00:22:57.75 But when we take it to the extreme, 00:22:57.84\00:23:00.78 that is not good for our health. 00:23:01.03\00:23:03.87 We, in our heart, desire intimacy. 00:23:04.03\00:23:08.84 And when we don't even know the names of our neighbors, 00:23:09.30\00:23:15.54 and we just go to work and 00:23:15.69\00:23:19.18 have very shallow relationships... 00:23:19.27\00:23:22.78 Different structures that used to be 00:23:23.30\00:23:27.03 very present in our societies 00:23:27.09\00:23:29.60 are starting to disappear, 00:23:29.78\00:23:31.48 such as churches. Churches... 00:23:31.57\00:23:35.24 Studies show that people that attend the church regularly 00:23:35.30\00:23:39.54 have a better health. 00:23:39.66\00:23:41.09 And that is related to that intimacy. 00:23:41.18\00:23:43.42 When you go to church, 00:23:43.51\00:23:44.69 and you talk to the other members 00:23:44.81\00:23:47.00 and you start sharing your heart, 00:23:47.09\00:23:48.72 It's very good for the soul, that. 00:23:49.09\00:23:51.87 When they have done studies about this, 00:23:53.06\00:23:57.69 It's fascinating the results that they have found. 00:23:57.70\00:23:59.72 University of Pittsburgh did a very interesting study. 00:24:00.00\00:24:03.45 in which they put the virus of the cold 00:24:03.63\00:24:08.57 straight on the noses of the participants or the volunteers. 00:24:08.75\00:24:13.75 And what they found is that 00:24:14.15\00:24:17.00 the people that made five or more phone calls to friends 00:24:17.15\00:24:23.42 in a period of aweek-- imagine this-- 00:24:23.66\00:24:26.06 in a period of a week, 00:24:26.18\00:24:28.03 those people didn't develop the cold. 00:24:28.12\00:24:31.12 Oh wow. 00:24:31.13\00:24:32.21 Their immune system became strong enough 00:24:32.27\00:24:36.51 to battle that virus of a cold. 00:24:36.57\00:24:39.03 Five people! - Wow, yeah. 00:24:39.12\00:24:40.48 And that's not a huge number. 00:24:40.54\00:24:43.18 Same thing, certain studies have shown that 00:24:43.39\00:24:47.72 people that are going to go through 00:24:48.03\00:24:49.51 certain medical heart procedures, 00:24:49.57\00:24:52.51 if they have somebody to which they can open their heart, 00:24:52.63\00:24:59.21 the outcome of that particular surgery 00:24:59.36\00:25:03.51 is much better, independently of secondary factors 00:25:03.63\00:25:08.27 such as smoking and exercise, which is great. 00:25:08.30\00:25:13.15 But you can be doing all these right things 00:25:13.39\00:25:17.09 and if you don't have intimacy, 00:25:17.15\00:25:19.54 you are in big trouble. 00:25:19.63\00:25:22.36 Wow. - So then, 00:25:22.48\00:25:23.57 what are we going to do to increase our intimacy? 00:25:23.75\00:25:27.45 One of the things that we suggest 00:25:27.57\00:25:30.06 is that you develop a prayer life. 00:25:30.09\00:25:32.45 When you are praying 00:25:32.81\00:25:34.84 and you become vulnerable to God, 00:25:35.15\00:25:38.84 just open yourself. 00:25:39.18\00:25:41.15 Don't try to trick God. 00:25:41.45\00:25:43.18 "Oh, He doesn't know these things." 00:25:43.24\00:25:44.75 He knows it! 00:25:44.81\00:25:45.87 Why not just spit it out? 00:25:46.03\00:25:48.51 So when you have that kind of relationship with God, 00:25:48.60\00:25:52.75 it's very good for the soul. 00:25:53.00\00:25:54.57 That's why studies show that prayer is so good. 00:25:54.58\00:25:58.03 Also, develop friendships. 00:25:58.12\00:26:01.24 Participate in community activities such as, 00:26:01.39\00:26:05.18 attend a regular church service. 00:26:05.24\00:26:07.84 That is so good for your soul, 00:26:08.03\00:26:10.54 to be able to fellowship 00:26:10.57\00:26:12.54 and talk to other people, 00:26:12.55\00:26:14.45 and try to find out how you can increase 00:26:14.57\00:26:18.54 that intimacy with those around you. 00:26:18.57\00:26:21.03 That is so wonderful. God is good. 00:26:21.24\00:26:23.27 For those of you who would like 00:26:23.51\00:26:24.87 more information about this topic, 00:26:24.88\00:26:26.42 you can visit our website at: 00:26:26.48\00:26:27.63 And you can also remember, 00:26:29.42\00:26:30.48 maybe we should each take time to call five friends, 00:26:30.49\00:26:32.60 and have prayer. 00:26:32.75\00:26:34.30 Have a nice big prayer chain. 00:26:34.33\00:26:35.63 Good exercise. 00:26:35.64\00:26:36.63 Thank you for joining us. 00:26:36.64\00:26:37.87 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:45.27\00:26:47.78 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:47.81\00:26:50.30 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:50.87\00:26:54.27 our educational system today. 00:26:54.30\00:26:56.45 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:26:57.09\00:26:59.36 saw schools more like a factory, 00:26:59.72\00:27:01.63 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:01.64\00:27:04.39 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:04.42\00:27:06.39 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:06.84\00:27:09.39 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:09.40\00:27:12.24 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.78 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:14.87\00:27:17.42 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:17.66\00:27:20.21 long since passed. 00:27:20.22\00:27:21.60 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:22.87\00:27:26.21 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:26.30\00:27:30.30 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:30.57\00:27:33.03 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:46.15\00:27:48.12 If you have a friend like Paul 00:27:48.36\00:27:50.30 who has suffered from a heart attack, 00:27:50.36\00:27:52.24 maybe you can refer them 00:27:52.36\00:27:53.69 to the NEWSTART program here at Weimar. 00:27:53.70\00:27:55.84 Have them pick up their phone and give us a call at: 00:27:56.27\00:27:58.27 God bless you, 00:28:03.51\00:28:04.63 and have a great day. 00:28:04.64\00:28:05.84
