Hi folks, and welcome to another edition of newstart now. 00:00:23.87\00:00:27.48 We have a guest with us today, 00:00:28.21\00:00:30.12 Mary Kay Gonzales from Santa Fe, New Mexico 00:00:30.13\00:00:32.69 Mary Kay came to us a couple of weeks ago 00:00:33.54\00:00:35.75 very sick, and we'd like to see 00:00:36.60\00:00:38.51 that interview right now if we can. 00:00:38.52\00:00:40.60 Well I believe what happened is, 00:00:42.09\00:00:45.42 just the everyday work of stress, 00:00:45.87\00:00:49.18 and not taking time for exercise 00:00:49.63\00:00:52.78 and eating right. 00:00:52.79\00:00:53.87 And I remember about Weimar, 00:00:54.03\00:00:56.63 and how it has a lifestyle change program. 00:00:57.18\00:01:02.48 And also to take control of my diabetes, 00:01:02.87\00:01:07.06 which I was diagnosed in 1999. 00:01:07.51\00:01:09.69 Being here, I know that I want to be able to 00:01:11.36\00:01:15.78 to continue the work that I do, 00:01:16.54\00:01:20.18 without worrying about feeling sick, 00:01:20.63\00:01:24.09 or not being able to do, or be able to 00:01:24.66\00:01:27.36 travel anywhere with restrictions of health 00:01:27.37\00:01:30.39 So reversing the diabetes, 00:01:30.78\00:01:33.21 and just doing a whole new way of eating 00:01:33.22\00:01:36.66 would give me a fresh start 00:01:38.09\00:01:40.78 to really be able to accomplish what I 00:01:41.33\00:01:43.51 need to do in just an everyday situation. 00:01:43.52\00:01:45.78 Well folks in our studio I have Mary Kay Gonzales. 00:01:47.57\00:01:51.33 Mary Kay, how are you? - I'm doing great. 00:01:51.51\00:01:53.45 You look like. . . 00:01:53.54\00:01:54.57 you look different! 00:01:56.09\00:01:57.15 Thank you, yes. 00:01:57.27\00:01:58.63 Tell us what has happened, 00:01:59.15\00:02:00.48 I know you have some exciting news to tell. 00:02:00.49\00:02:02.60 Yes, I feel great since I've been here, 00:02:02.75\00:02:05.30 I'm off of all my high blood pressure medicine. 00:02:05.54\00:02:08.39 And you say all, now when I was on 00:02:08.42\00:02:10.21 those I had two, were you taking two? 00:02:10.22\00:02:12.06 Yes, two of them. 00:02:12.18\00:02:13.66 Ok, and you're off those. 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.15 Off of them, and my blood pressure is normal 00:02:15.24\00:02:18.60 which makes me happy because I've 00:02:19.42\00:02:21.12 been on high blood pressure for 15 years. 00:02:21.13\00:02:23.15 15 years! You mean she's a little overweight. 00:12:27.84\00:12:31.36 Yes, she's a little overweight. 00:12:31.51\00:12:32.63 Some of our viewers don't know what that comment means. 00:12:32.69\00:12:34.81 People don't like to be told their overweight, so I say 00:12:34.82\00:12:37.06 Well, you know, you're not overweight, 00:12:37.09\00:12:39.87 you're just undertall, or you're too short! 00:12:39.88\00:12:42.60 You need to grow taller! 00:12:42.78\00:12:44.18 But we haven't figured out a way to help 00:12:46.24\00:12:48.21 people grow taller when their 40 and 50 years old, 00:12:48.22\00:12:50.57 So then we have to work with the other parameter, 00:12:50.63\00:12:53.48 and we usually then help them lose weight. 00:12:53.75\00:12:56.51 And we help them do that very successfully with the 00:12:56.60\00:12:59.39 program that is here, and the Lord's blessing. 00:12:59.84\00:13:03.57 The Lord's blessing is really important, 00:13:03.69\00:13:05.42 because we've had people lose 140 pounds, 00:13:05.87\00:13:09.30 150 pounds, 200 pounds. 00:13:09.31\00:13:11.15 Not in 18 days? 00:13:11.16\00:13:12.21 No, no not in 18 days, 00:13:12.22\00:13:13.54 and they keep it off. 00:13:13.81\00:13:15.39 We have had patients lose like 20 pounds 00:13:15.69\00:13:20.24 or 25 pounds in the 18 days, 00:13:20.33\00:13:22.69 but a significant part of that was water. 00:13:22.87\00:13:24.78 But, you know, it has happened. 00:13:27.00\00:13:28.42 But the program does work, 00:13:29.27\00:13:31.15 and we're really happy to help the people out. 00:13:31.16\00:13:34.30 Now Mary Kay, I understand is 00:13:35.30\00:13:38.06 taken off a couple of her medications 00:13:38.07\00:13:41.39 since she arrived here, 00:13:42.18\00:13:43.33 can you tell us a little bit about that? 00:13:43.34\00:13:45.27 Well Mary Kay comes in with the diabetes, 00:13:45.45\00:13:47.15 and the high blood pressure, 00:13:47.16\00:13:48.30 the weight, and the history of cancer. 00:13:48.31\00:13:49.78 So the areas she wanted to work with, 00:13:50.36\00:13:52.36 she wanted to lose some weight, 00:13:52.37\00:13:54.03 she wanted to see if she could get off 00:13:54.48\00:13:56.18 some of her medications, and she. . . 00:13:56.19\00:13:57.72 One was for triglycerides? 00:13:57.75\00:13:59.60 She was on one for her triglycerides, 00:13:59.87\00:14:01.84 and her triglycerides were really quite high, they were 00:14:01.85\00:14:04.69 300 or more. . . around . . . you know. . . 00:14:05.87\00:14:07.81 up in the high 200s or almost 300, 00:14:08.36\00:14:11.45 and so one of the medicines for that was removed 00:14:11.75\00:14:16.06 and her triglycerides came down, 00:14:16.36\00:14:18.48 and they came down quite dramatically, 00:14:19.03\00:14:21.09 you know like over 120 points, 00:14:21.10\00:14:22.60 and that was with the lifestyle changes that 00:14:23.15\00:14:25.24 she made without having to use the medication, 00:14:25.25\00:14:27.39 and she was happy about that. 00:14:27.84\00:14:29.00 And as we would monitor her when she came in, 00:14:29.63\00:14:31.63 her blood pressure was really. . . 00:14:31.64\00:14:33.15 it was normal with her medication. 00:14:33.16\00:14:34.54 So we started to withdraw the medication 00:14:35.36\00:14:38.27 and monitor her blood pressure, 00:14:38.60\00:14:40.36 and her blood pressure stayed down, 00:14:40.81\00:14:42.81 so as the blood pressure continued to stay down 00:14:42.82\00:14:45.45 we slowly removed more medicine, 00:14:46.00\00:14:47.57 and the blood pressure stayed down, 00:14:47.58\00:14:49.33 till finally she got to the place where she wasn't on any 00:14:49.63\00:14:53.00 medicine for her blood pressure, 00:14:53.01\00:14:54.78 and her blood pressure was normal. 00:14:54.79\00:14:56.72 She said, Oh good, I don't have to use any more medicine, 00:14:57.00\00:14:59.75 and her blood pressures were normal. 00:15:00.33\00:15:02.03 As she continues to. . . 00:15:02.48\00:15:04.42 follow the principles that she's learned, 00:15:04.87\00:15:07.42 they should stay down, 00:15:07.43\00:15:08.69 and she was very happy about that. 00:15:09.27\00:15:11.33 Oh she's excited, so am I, and I can tell you are as well. 00:15:11.69\00:15:15.69 When she first arrived here, 00:15:16.42\00:15:18.57 and she had her initial interview 00:15:18.58\00:15:21.09 she seemed to be a little bit down, 00:15:21.69\00:15:24.60 somewhat depressed 00:15:24.61\00:15:26.09 and she shared a little bit about that. 00:15:26.57\00:15:29.42 Did she talk to you about her depression? 00:15:29.60\00:15:31.75 She really didn't mention that too much, but I know that 00:15:32.24\00:15:35.39 as we continued to work with her, 00:15:35.84\00:15:38.60 her mood brightened, 00:15:39.15\00:15:41.06 and she was much more optimistic, 00:15:41.07\00:15:44.06 and she was much more outgoing, 00:15:45.30\00:15:47.36 and much more cheerful and a lot happier. 00:15:47.37\00:15:50.06 Well I think. . . 00:15:50.81\00:15:52.27 from what she's been through 00:15:53.24\00:15:54.87 that would be depressing in itself. 00:15:54.88\00:15:57.00 And I know, and maybe you can remember, 00:15:57.69\00:15:59.87 when I came through the program, I was depressed. 00:15:59.88\00:16:02.60 I thought I was going to die any day, 00:16:03.30\00:16:05.21 and you know, all these things that had happened to me. 00:16:05.22\00:16:07.84 And I was quite scared, and I could 00:16:08.36\00:16:10.39 see that in the eyes of a lot of people 00:16:10.40\00:16:12.60 who come through the program. 00:16:13.09\00:16:15.09 Some of them are not so willing to share that with a stranger. 00:16:15.54\00:16:20.30 However I know that after being 00:16:20.84\00:16:22.72 with you doctors for a couple of weeks, 00:16:22.73\00:16:25.06 we. . . at least I opened up and I see she did as well. 00:16:25.51\00:16:29.21 Now she's also lost weight, and I know 00:16:29.87\00:16:32.03 that she wants to continue to lose weight, 00:16:32.04\00:16:34.24 do you have a program in place where you follow up with guests, 00:16:34.69\00:16:39.87 and assist them after they leave the NEWSTART program? 00:16:40.18\00:16:43.45 Well, the patients that I follow, 00:16:43.63\00:16:46.00 every single one of them that I work with, 00:16:46.01\00:16:48.78 when they go home, I ask them, Do you have email? 00:16:49.30\00:16:53.24 And if they do, I give them my email, 00:16:53.69\00:16:57.12 I also give them my card, 00:16:57.57\00:17:00.30 but I also give them my home telephone number. 00:17:00.54\00:17:03.12 And I say, Look, if you have any questions that you want to ask, 00:17:03.78\00:17:07.15 or any problems after the program and you need an answer, 00:17:07.42\00:17:12.12 or if you get sorely tempted to do something that 00:17:12.36\00:17:17.27 is less than healthful, 00:17:17.51\00:17:19.42 and you say, Should I or shouldn't I? 00:17:19.51\00:17:21.66 Please give us a call, anytime, day or night 00:17:22.21\00:17:24.63 as long as I'm present here in the US 00:17:25.15\00:17:29.09 I'll be happy to talk to you, 00:17:29.21\00:17:30.48 and we'll see if we can talk you through that. 00:17:30.49\00:17:32.45 I can vouch for you because 00:17:33.00\00:17:35.06 I remember talking to you on 00:17:35.33\00:17:37.42 the phone about 5 or 6 years ago, 00:17:37.43\00:17:39.78 before I ever came to the NEWSTART program, 00:17:40.42\00:17:43.36 and it was like 10:30 at night! 00:17:43.81\00:17:45.48 And I understand from working with you now, 00:17:46.24\00:17:49.30 in the evenings you often spend the entire 00:17:49.75\00:17:52.03 evening talking to people all over the world. 00:17:52.04\00:17:54.33 Well, yes sometimes that's right 00:17:54.69\00:17:57.27 I can't really do it during the daytime in the 00:17:58.21\00:18:00.48 office in between patients, it's not long enough, 00:18:00.49\00:18:02.81 so sometimes when I go home, 00:18:03.39\00:18:05.54 then I'll start to make my phone calls. 00:18:05.81\00:18:07.87 And if they are on the east coast, it's a little 00:18:08.42\00:18:10.42 challenging because I don't want to call them too late at night. 00:18:10.43\00:18:13.06 But if they're on the west coast, 00:18:13.48\00:18:16.00 I'll usually call up to nine or ten in the evening. 00:18:16.01\00:18:19.66 and most of the time people are very happy to hear it, 00:18:19.87\00:18:22.15 occasionally they say, Well can you call another time? 00:18:22.24\00:18:24.72 I say Certainly. 00:18:24.73\00:18:26.00 So it's up to them. 00:18:26.15\00:18:27.27 Well I mention these things because the viewers are saying, 00:18:27.66\00:18:30.27 well I know some might be saying, 00:18:30.30\00:18:32.27 at least I've been asked, 00:18:32.28\00:18:33.66 Well what about when we leave? And I say after you leave, 00:18:34.21\00:18:37.36 all you have to do is give us a call. 00:18:37.37\00:18:39.39 There's a number of us, 00:18:39.87\00:18:41.27 especially I know with you doctors, 00:18:41.28\00:18:43.21 who are so willing to assist our guests 00:18:43.66\00:18:47.06 once they've left the program. 00:18:47.63\00:18:49.66 Don't we have a young lady on 00:18:49.69\00:18:51.51 staff now that does the followup? 00:18:51.52\00:18:53.48 That's right, and you know another thing I do when I 00:18:53.72\00:18:57.09 give them their final instructions, 00:18:57.78\00:18:59.21 I write my email address 00:18:59.75\00:19:03.51 I say, I want you to give me a report, 00:19:03.81\00:19:05.69 if you have email, once a month 00:19:05.70\00:19:07.24 give me your progress, tell me what your weight is, 00:19:07.69\00:19:10.18 what your blood pressure is, 00:19:10.19\00:19:11.48 if you have diabetes what your 00:19:12.03\00:19:13.42 blood sugars are, and how you're doing. 00:19:13.43\00:19:15.24 And if you have diabetes, and you go get a hemoglobin A1C, 00:19:15.69\00:19:20.24 which gives a number for what their 00:19:20.60\00:19:22.63 blood sugars have been like for three months, 00:19:22.64\00:19:25.21 I want to know what those values are. 00:19:25.33\00:19:27.81 And we often encourage them to 00:19:28.36\00:19:30.57 repeat lab work in three to six months 00:19:30.58\00:19:33.36 depending on how important it is. 00:19:33.45\00:19:37.18 So we want to know how their doing. 00:19:37.48\00:19:39.15 Yes, good. Now I know that she's going home, 00:19:39.87\00:19:43.57 and I believe she lives in Santa Rosa, California, 00:19:43.58\00:19:47.66 a couple hours away from us. 00:19:48.21\00:19:49.72 She is going to continue on this program, 00:19:50.87\00:19:54.84 what assistance does she have with regards to how to prepare 00:19:55.39\00:20:00.63 once she gets home and starts 00:20:01.06\00:20:02.72 cleaning out the pantry and the freezer 00:20:02.73\00:20:05.03 Well this is something we talk 00:20:05.48\00:20:07.09 to them about even before they go, 00:20:07.10\00:20:08.72 What are your plans when you go home? 00:20:09.06\00:20:11.33 Where are you going to put in your exercise? 00:20:11.78\00:20:13.66 What are you planning to do about food? 00:20:13.72\00:20:15.66 And they start to think about these things before they go, 00:20:16.21\00:20:19.21 and also for menu planning they talk with my wife May, 00:20:19.48\00:20:22.60 who is a dietitian, a registered dietitian. 00:20:23.09\00:20:25.33 So they plan out the foods they're going to eat, 00:20:25.57\00:20:27.66 and the menus they're going to follow, 00:20:27.67\00:20:29.30 so they have a good idea of what they're going to do. 00:20:29.54\00:20:32.24 If they need to purchase some of those things here, they do that. 00:20:32.51\00:20:34.72 And by the way, Mary Kay 00:20:35.00\00:20:36.24 even though she lives in Santa Rosa, 00:20:36.51\00:20:38.30 she's going to come back for the reunion 00:20:38.31\00:20:40.24 the first Wednesday of the month, 00:20:40.69\00:20:43.48 where we have anyone who's been a NEWSTART alumni, 00:20:43.63\00:20:45.69 they come back and we have lunch together. 00:20:45.70\00:20:47.39 Yes, the first Wednesday of each month, 00:20:47.57\00:20:50.45 and I think that's just a wonderful plan, 00:20:51.03\00:20:53.36 and I notice the group is getting larger and larger! 00:20:53.37\00:20:56.33 That's awesome. 00:20:56.57\00:20:57.57 Any other thing you can add for Mary Kay? 00:20:58.12\00:21:01.84 Well, she lost five pounds, 00:21:02.39\00:21:04.15 she's off her blood pressure medicines, 00:21:04.30\00:21:06.45 and her blood sugars are under much better control. 00:21:06.46\00:21:09.21 And she's off the triglyceride medicine. 00:21:09.33\00:21:11.30 Yes, and she's very pleased and happy about that. 00:21:11.42\00:21:13.63 Dr. Ing, our time is running short, 00:21:14.66\00:21:16.63 I want to thank you again for joining us. 00:21:16.64\00:21:18.84 God Bless you in your work. 00:21:19.54\00:21:20.87 Thank you very much Ron. 00:21:21.45\00:21:22.57 And thank you folks for joining us, 00:21:22.75\00:21:24.24 but don't go away, we have an important message for you. 00:21:24.25\00:21:26.42 Hello, and welcome to NEWSTART NOW, 00:21:41.18\00:21:42.78 I'm your host Don Mackintosh, 00:21:42.79\00:21:44.18 and today we're glad that Dr. Michael Orlich is with us today. 00:21:44.19\00:21:47.03 Welcome Dr. Orlich. 00:21:47.42\00:21:48.45 Good to be with you Don. 00:21:48.63\00:21:49.84 Now you're a specialist in family practice, 00:21:50.24\00:21:52.63 but also you're doing a board in preventative medicine, 00:21:52.64\00:21:55.69 you worked here for a time at the NEWSTART program as well. 00:21:55.70\00:21:59.03 That's right, four years here at NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:21:59.12\00:22:02.39 And we have an acronym here, NEWSTART, 00:22:02.48\00:22:04.72 which a guest came up with I guess, 00:22:04.73\00:22:06.75 and one of those parts of the acronym is W, water. 00:22:07.30\00:22:11.15 We want to talk about water today, 00:22:11.84\00:22:14.18 do we get enough water? 00:22:14.19\00:22:15.63 Well, some people do and some people don't, 00:22:16.84\00:22:19.39 but there are a lot of 00:22:19.40\00:22:20.69 people who don't get enough water. 00:22:20.70\00:22:22.63 Water is one of those simple things 00:22:23.39\00:22:25.24 that we take for granted, like air, 00:22:25.25\00:22:27.03 but it's very important for our health. 00:22:27.51\00:22:29.30 Does our body tell us when we need water? 00:22:29.75\00:22:31.24 or do we have to tell our body that we need water? 00:22:31.25\00:22:33.00 Well it's very fortunate that our 00:22:33.39\00:22:35.27 body does have a lot of mechanisms 00:22:35.28\00:22:37.12 for keeping us from getting dehydrated. 00:22:37.57\00:22:39.72 We hang onto more water through our 00:22:40.27\00:22:42.75 kidneys when we're not getting enough, 00:22:42.76\00:22:45.48 and we also have the thirst mechanism, 00:22:46.12\00:22:48.66 that keep us from getting too dehydrated, 00:22:49.00\00:22:51.39 but remember these are alarms 00:22:51.40\00:22:53.12 of your body saying it's getting a bit dehydrated, 00:22:53.42\00:22:56.45 so it's better to stay ahead of 00:22:56.46\00:22:58.36 the game and get plenty of water. 00:22:58.37\00:23:00.30 Remember that probably 70% of your body is made up of water, 00:23:00.42\00:23:05.36 all of the various chemical reactions that 00:23:05.42\00:23:07.66 take place in your body that allow you to be alive 00:23:07.67\00:23:10.36 are water based reactions. 00:23:10.84\00:23:12.66 And so having enough water, staying well hydrated 00:23:12.75\00:23:15.51 is a very important principle for health. 00:23:16.06\00:23:18.00 And you were telling me before we 00:23:18.45\00:23:20.09 did this segment that there's some 00:23:20.10\00:23:21.60 new research that's also showing 00:23:21.61\00:23:23.18 some benefits for being well hydrated. 00:23:23.19\00:23:24.84 Well that's true, there are a number 00:23:25.36\00:23:27.33 of benefits of getting enough water. 00:23:27.34\00:23:29.27 Some of the most obvious ones actually have 00:23:29.72\00:23:32.36 to do with the urinary system, and the bladder. 00:23:32.37\00:23:35.18 For example if you want to avoid urinary tract infections, 00:23:35.33\00:23:38.84 it's good to drink plenty of water. 00:23:38.85\00:23:41.03 If you want to avoid kidney stones, 00:23:41.57\00:23:43.45 it's important to drink a lot of water. 00:23:43.46\00:23:45.45 If you keep the urine dilute, 00:23:45.57\00:23:47.18 the stones don't have as much of an ability to form. 00:23:47.63\00:23:50.57 And bladder cancer is clearly 00:23:51.12\00:23:53.21 reduced with increased water intake. 00:23:53.22\00:23:55.66 But what I was telling you about is findings 00:23:56.21\00:23:58.84 from the Adventist Health Study, which is a major 00:23:58.85\00:24:01.78 epidemiological cohorts study funded by the 00:24:02.21\00:24:05.18 National Institutes of Health, 00:24:05.39\00:24:07.18 and done out of Loma Linda University. 00:24:07.19\00:24:09.36 And they published interesting results that 00:24:09.81\00:24:12.48 had to do with people on their questionnaire 00:24:12.49\00:24:15.15 checking whether they drink more than five 00:24:15.45\00:24:19.00 glasses of water a day between two and five, 00:24:19.01\00:24:22.51 or less than two glasses of water a day, 00:24:23.00\00:24:25.42 and a very very interesting finding 00:24:25.43\00:24:27.54 is that those people who drank 00:24:28.09\00:24:29.84 more than five glasses of water a day 00:24:29.85\00:24:32.09 had a significant reduction 00:24:32.39\00:24:34.60 in their risk of coronary heart disease, 00:24:35.00\00:24:37.27 compared to those people who drank 00:24:37.28\00:24:39.24 less than two glasses of water a day. 00:24:39.25\00:24:41.30 So it seems that something as simple as drinking enough water 00:24:41.87\00:24:45.18 may lead to a reduced risk of one 00:24:45.63\00:24:47.45 of the biggest killers in America. 00:24:47.46\00:24:49.27 Wow, I'm feeling thirsty already! 00:24:49.60\00:24:51.51 But is all water equal? I mean you know, 00:24:51.75\00:24:54.27 bottled water, tap water, where should I get my water? 00:24:54.28\00:24:57.48 Well, some people ask about other beverages, 00:24:58.03\00:25:01.84 you know, like say pop, and Kool-Aid, 00:25:02.03\00:25:04.21 and coffee, and that sort of thing, 00:25:04.22\00:25:06.30 And fortunately all of these things can help 00:25:06.57\00:25:09.09 you keep from becoming completely dehydrated, 00:25:09.10\00:25:11.54 because they are all mostly made out of water, 00:25:11.55\00:25:14.12 but it's far better to drink pure water. 00:25:14.57\00:25:16.78 One of the biggest and simplest reasons is 00:25:17.03\00:25:20.00 you don't need a lot of the other things that are added, 00:25:20.63\00:25:23.30 and one of the biggest things is calories. 00:25:23.31\00:25:25.24 You don't want to drink your calories, because this can 00:25:25.87\00:25:28.51 bring on so many extra 00:25:28.52\00:25:29.57 calories and lead to weight gain. 00:25:29.58\00:25:31.15 But water itself, course we can get it in many forms, 00:25:31.69\00:25:35.18 and around the world many 00:25:35.30\00:25:37.12 people die from contaminated water. 00:25:37.13\00:25:39.51 Fortunately here in the United States, 00:25:39.69\00:25:41.66 most city water, municipal water is safe, 00:25:42.21\00:25:46.00 and free of major pollutants. 00:25:46.48\00:25:48.69 And so most people can do well with just 00:25:48.75\00:25:51.42 drinking tap water and drinking enough of it. 00:25:51.43\00:25:54.30 Bottled waters have been looked at and in general 00:25:54.81\00:25:58.45 they're about the same as your average 00:25:59.00\00:26:01.54 tap water so there's no real advantage to 00:26:01.55\00:26:04.33 bottled water, distilled water, that type of thing. 00:26:04.69\00:26:07.81 Six to eight glasses a day? 00:26:08.63\00:26:10.12 Six to eight glasses is certainly a good rule of thumb, 00:26:10.60\00:26:13.45 it varies if you're in a hot environment, 00:26:13.87\00:26:16.18 if you're exercising a lot you will need more, 00:26:16.19\00:26:18.60 but six to eight glasses a day is 00:26:19.15\00:26:20.87 good for most people in most times. 00:26:20.88\00:26:22.75 Well I think we're going to have a drink 00:26:23.18\00:26:24.81 right after this segment, of water that is. 00:26:24.82\00:26:26.63 And we're glad your joined us, 00:26:26.69\00:26:28.09 Dr. Mike we're glad you're here with us, 00:26:28.10\00:26:29.75 and we're glad you joined us as well. 00:26:30.30\00:26:31.81 We hope that you can visit our website, 00:26:31.87\00:26:34.42 to get more information about this or other subjects, 00:26:34.69\00:26:37.03 and that as a result of todays program, 00:26:37.48\00:26:39.39 you have a newstart that begins. . . 00:26:39.40\00:26:40.60 right now. 00:26:40.61\00:26:41.69 Modern views of evolution stem all the way 00:26:49.54\00:26:52.03 back to theories developed in the mid 1800s. 00:26:52.04\00:26:54.45 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:55.48\00:26:58.54 our educational system today. 00:26:58.75\00:27:00.78 The common school movement for example, 00:27:01.78\00:27:03.66 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:03.81\00:27:05.72 with students blindly memorizing 00:27:05.78\00:27:07.66 instruction rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:07.67\00:27:10.42 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical, 00:27:11.30\00:27:13.60 instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:14.15\00:27:16.27 It was designed to conform the individual 00:27:16.72\00:27:19.18 into a specific ideological mold, 00:27:19.27\00:27:21.78 that fit the needs of a old industrial era, long since past. 00:27:22.24\00:27:25.60 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:27.33\00:27:30.45 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:30.66\00:27:34.60 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:34.87\00:27:37.27 Well friends thank you for joining us, 00:27:50.57\00:27:52.66 in the meantime, pick up the phone, and call - 00:27:53.15\00:27:56.18 May God bless you. 00:28:04.30\00:28:05.48
