Now tell us about the heart pain, or the angina. 00:03:44.45\00:03:49.87 Yes, I have angina. When I first got here 00:03:50.09\00:03:53.30 sometimes just getting up out of a chair or going 50 feet, 00:03:54.45\00:03:57.84 my left arm would start aching. 00:03:58.27\00:04:00.15 But now I'm able to go, 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.75 sometimes over half a mile without. . . 00:04:03.42\00:04:05.42 then it just mildly shows up. 00:04:05.43\00:04:06.81 And on my stress test, I went 00:04:07.42\00:04:09.39 considerably longer before I got any angina, 00:04:09.40\00:04:12.30 so it's really quite an improvement for 18 days, 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.51 I can't hardly believe it, it's really great. 00:04:15.52\00:04:17.69 The first day that I met you and we did the interview, 00:04:18.66\00:04:21.84 you and I went for a walk around 00:04:22.39\00:04:24.15 the half mile loop, you remember? 00:04:24.16\00:04:25.81 Yes. 00:04:25.82\00:04:27.00 And I remember you went all the way, very slowly, 00:04:27.01\00:04:31.18 but you made it all the way around the half mile loop. 00:04:31.51\00:04:33.48 Right. 00:04:33.49\00:04:34.48 And have you progressed 00:04:34.49\00:04:37.18 that much more since you've been here in the last seventeen days? 00:04:37.69\00:04:41.66 Right, well I'm walking a lot faster now, 00:04:42.00\00:04:44.51 and I'm doing it quicker you know, 00:04:44.52\00:04:46.60 and with less angina, 00:04:46.84\00:04:49.69 Sometimes it does show up, but it's so improved, 00:04:50.48\00:04:54.84 and I feel like if I just keep doing this it's going 00:04:55.84\00:04:57.81 to get better and better and I'll lose weight you know 00:04:57.82\00:04:59.84 Yes, and you got to get that exercise, 00:05:00.18\00:05:02.72 and all the things that you learned here, 00:05:03.27\00:05:05.84 Now tell us about some of the other things, 00:05:06.00\00:05:08.54 I know that you've had 00:05:08.55\00:05:09.81 cooking school, are you learning to cook? 00:05:10.03\00:05:12.30 Right, and that's really good, 00:05:12.51\00:05:14.36 because I felt like an uneducated vegan! 00:05:14.37\00:05:16.72 I had decided to be a vegan on September the ninth, 00:05:16.78\00:05:19.06 but I didn't really know what I was doing 00:05:19.07\00:05:20.75 except that I knew I wasn't eating any animal products. 00:05:20.76\00:05:22.75 So I've learned a lot of little tricks, 00:05:23.30\00:05:25.18 like don't drink any water when you eat, 00:05:25.33\00:05:27.51 and drink some before and after you eat, 00:05:27.52\00:05:29.63 and stroll for about a half a mile 00:05:30.57\00:05:32.81 after you eat, that helps you digest. 00:05:32.82\00:05:35.24 And also the recipes are really fantastic, 00:05:35.39\00:05:39.36 and some of the recipes are really simple, 00:05:39.51\00:05:42.36 which is really good for me because I eat by myself, 00:05:42.37\00:05:45.72 being able to prepare something quickly for lunch or something, 00:05:46.39\00:05:49.39 that's really great, I didn't know how 00:05:49.40\00:05:51.24 to do that before so that was real good. 00:05:51.25\00:05:53.15 And I know that Mrs. Ing, May, 00:05:53.63\00:05:58.12 takes us out to our market here, 00:05:58.36\00:06:01.36 and teaches us how to shop, does she not? 00:06:01.60\00:06:04.03 She still does that right? 00:06:04.04\00:06:05.45 Right, I had to miss that tour because I had 00:06:06.39\00:06:10.54 an extra doctors appointment, 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.39 I went ahead and got the eye exam and the 00:06:12.40\00:06:14.75 carotid artery test, 00:06:15.57\00:06:17.09 so I didn't get to make that one. 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.78 Well perhaps we can get someone to take you through, and . . . 00:06:20.36\00:06:22.66 Yes, I'd like to see the store. 00:06:22.87\00:06:24.24 But we have had lessons on how to 00:06:24.51\00:06:26.27 shop and read labels and all that, 00:06:26.28\00:06:28.00 so that's good and I've learned quite a bit from that. 00:06:28.01\00:06:30.60 Ok, so aside from the weight loss, 00:06:31.21\00:06:34.24 and the angina, 00:06:34.48\00:06:36.66 what about the other situations? 00:06:37.78\00:06:39.51 I don't know if you can see my shows or not, 00:06:39.54\00:06:41.75 but when I got here, the straps were normal, 00:06:41.76\00:06:44.00 and now I've lost all the edema in my feet, 00:06:44.66\00:06:47.72 and I've got the straps put on, I'm going to 00:06:47.78\00:06:49.69 have to get some narrower shoes it looks like. 00:06:49.70\00:06:51.63 Yes, looks like you are! 00:06:51.78\00:06:53.54 When I was about 35 years old I was 00:06:53.81\00:06:56.63 diagnosed with infectious seborrhea 00:06:56.64\00:06:59.36 which is an auto immune disease of the scalp, 00:07:00.12\00:07:02.42 and it's kind of like permanent 00:07:02.87\00:07:05.06 dandruff with sores, that has disappeared. 00:07:05.07\00:07:07.72 - Wow - And it's supposed 00:07:08.21\00:07:09.48 to be incurable. 00:07:09.49\00:07:10.72 They told me all my life it was incurable, 00:07:11.33\00:07:13.57 and I've been having to buy medicated shampoo 00:07:13.58\00:07:16.03 that's like 58 dollars for four ounces, 00:07:16.21\00:07:18.60 prescription just to wash my hair to kind of control it. 00:07:19.00\00:07:22.00 And now, all the sores are gone, 00:07:23.03\00:07:25.00 I don't have any dandruff anymore. 00:07:25.01\00:07:27.00 You know, that's probably something you didn't expect. 00:07:27.30\00:07:29.66 I didn't expect that no! 00:07:29.75\00:07:31.36 but you know we have people who come here, every month, 00:07:31.75\00:07:35.60 some of them are at the end of their rope, 00:07:36.18\00:07:38.09 they just don't know what else to do, 00:07:38.27\00:07:40.54 and they say, Well I understand there's a lot of 00:07:41.00\00:07:43.06 miracles that happen at the NEWSTART program at Weimar, 00:07:43.07\00:07:45.36 why don't I go there and see what happens? 00:07:45.75\00:07:47.66 Well this was supposed to be incurable. 00:07:48.78\00:07:50.78 That's the point, yes. 00:07:51.06\00:07:52.36 I really didn't expect that. . . it's just unbelievable. 00:07:52.60\00:07:57.42 The thing that really overwhelmed me is how 00:07:57.60\00:08:00.03 loving everybody is here, and the environment 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.39 how sincere, you know, it's not like the real world! 00:08:03.09\00:08:06.42 I'm kind of scared to go back into the real world now, because 00:08:07.30\00:08:10.30 there will be a lot of temptation that we 00:08:11.63\00:08:13.60 didn't have here, everything is so easy here, 00:08:13.61\00:08:15.63 you know, having everybody keep us strait. 00:08:16.21\00:08:18.42 But it's really been good. 00:08:19.15\00:08:20.57 Well I think you're going to do just fine. 00:08:20.69\00:08:22.72 Now, I want to ask you about the hydrotherapy, 00:08:23.84\00:08:27.15 did you have any particular 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.18 challenges with the hydrotherapy? 00:08:30.19\00:08:33.15 No, well it seemed to help my legs. . . 00:08:33.75\00:08:36.87 Well I had the foot bath, you asked about hydrotherapy, 00:08:37.39\00:08:41.12 yes, the hydrotherapy was good, I'm kind of 00:08:41.18\00:08:43.15 familiar with that because I live in hot springs, 00:08:43.16\00:08:45.33 and we have all those old bath houses. 00:08:45.42\00:08:47.21 They were the ones that kind of originated that, 00:08:47.54\00:08:50.12 they had the needle showers, 00:08:50.13\00:08:51.54 you know the real forceful pumps that you set in the tub, 00:08:52.48\00:08:55.15 and then you get the rub down, 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.54 then you get the hot and cold in there 00:08:56.55\00:08:58.30 so I knew a little bit about it. . . 00:08:58.33\00:09:00.12 I mean I've had that before. 00:09:00.13\00:09:01.42 It really helps it stimulates your skin, 00:09:02.30\00:09:05.00 and stimulates your blood flow I believe. 00:09:05.12\00:09:06.81 And they did some special treatment on your feet. 00:09:07.36\00:09:09.54 Right, that was with the foot bath, 00:09:10.09\00:09:12.45 the hot and cold, 00:09:12.46\00:09:13.57 with the moving water you know, and that was really good. 00:09:14.12\00:09:18.48 And I'm going to try to continue that, 00:09:19.24\00:09:20.72 they told me a way I could 00:09:20.73\00:09:21.75 probably figure out how to do it at home, 00:09:21.76\00:09:23.42 so I'm going to try to continue that, 00:09:23.43\00:09:24.84 because I do have poor circulation in my legs. 00:09:25.72\00:09:27.84 I do know about the circulation, 00:09:28.15\00:09:30.75 I had the same problem by the way, 00:09:30.76\00:09:33.54 but after a while the circulation, 00:09:34.09\00:09:36.48 you know the arteries 00:09:36.49\00:09:37.87 start to open up, the 00:09:38.42\00:09:39.60 capillaries and the all the veins. 00:09:39.61\00:09:41.48 And your body does automatic 00:09:41.84\00:09:44.21 bypasses where it didn't use to go. 00:09:44.22\00:09:46.81 So you're going to be fine, 00:09:47.12\00:09:48.15 just keep doing what you're doing. 00:09:48.16\00:09:49.39 I think so. 00:09:49.45\00:09:50.57 And when you get home, 00:09:50.69\00:09:51.72 you're going to stick to this program, 00:09:51.73\00:09:53.45 and I know you're going to do even better, 00:09:53.46\00:09:55.36 because now you know how to cook. 00:09:55.37\00:09:56.75 Right, and I only live about five minutes from the Y, 00:09:57.24\00:10:00.57 and I belong to the Y, and they have a lot of 00:10:00.58\00:10:03.42 weights, and they have treadmills, 00:10:04.36\00:10:07.30 they also have an indoor 00:10:07.66\00:10:09.00 walking in case it's bad weather. 00:10:09.01\00:10:10.57 Larry I want to thank you for joining us on the set here. 00:10:11.12\00:10:13.66 Thank you Ron. 00:10:13.67\00:10:14.75 Our time is running out and I got 00:10:14.76\00:10:16.33 to say good bye to these nice folks. 00:10:16.34\00:10:17.87 Thank you for joining us, don't go away, 00:10:18.09\00:10:20.03 I got a tip for you in a moment. 00:10:20.04\00:10:21.48 Well, you've done very well. 00:10:23.06\00:10:24.69 Do you have diabetes, 00:10:31.12\00:10:32.39 heart disease, high blood pressure, 00:10:32.40\00:10:34.48 or do you weigh too much? 00:10:35.03\00:10:36.33 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 00:10:37.21\00:10:40.00 about our 18-day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:10:40.01\00:10:42.87 It includes a comprehensive medical 00:10:43.60\00:10:45.51 evaluation with laboratory studies and an 00:10:45.52\00:10:47.66 exercise stress test, 00:10:48.09\00:10:49.63 physician consultations, 00:10:50.18\00:10:51.81 culinary school, 00:10:52.54\00:10:53.72 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful 00:10:54.27\00:10:56.72 trails in the foothills of the Sierras. 00:10:56.73\00:10:59.21 Your health is one of the most 00:11:01.27\00:11:02.69 important things that you have. 00:11:32.00\00:11:33.81 Great to be here Ron. 00:11:34.03\00:11:35.30 It's always great to have you here, 00:11:35.42\00:11:36.75 it seems like we just did this! 00:11:36.76\00:11:38.00 I want to talk about our guest. 00:11:40.39\00:11:42.63 I want to get right to it because 00:11:42.81\00:11:44.45 when he arrived here, he was a pretty sick guy. 00:11:45.24\00:11:47.84 He had more going on with him than most of us, 00:11:48.72\00:11:52.24 including myself. 00:11:52.69\00:11:54.39 We. . . lets walk through this, 00:11:55.30\00:11:58.15 Before he got here, he was like 340-350 pounds? 00:11:58.39\00:12:02.09 Yes, 336 pounds, more or less. 00:12:02.45\00:12:05.69 With diabetes? - With diabetes. 00:12:05.87\00:12:07.84 Clogged arteries? - Well, heart disease. 00:12:08.45\00:12:10.78 Primarily heart disease. 00:12:10.84\00:12:12.36 Heart disease, ok. 00:12:12.39\00:12:13.78 And he had the opportunity to go to 00:12:14.09\00:12:16.63 a program given in the church in his area, 00:12:16.64\00:12:19.42 he went to that program and he heard about 00:12:20.33\00:12:22.81 plant based diet and he says from that day on 00:12:24.45\00:12:27.03 he's been on a totally plant based diet, remarkable. 00:12:27.04\00:12:29.78 Absolutely amazing. 00:12:30.03\00:12:31.03 But he lost a considerable 00:12:31.48\00:12:33.42 amount of weight before he came here. 00:12:33.43\00:12:36.09 I think he started around 336 and 00:12:36.51\00:12:38.36 when I first saw him he was around 00:12:38.37\00:12:40.18 290 pounds so that means he had lost 00:12:40.63\00:12:43.72 46 pounds but he was still having angina, 00:12:45.57\00:12:48.33 he was still having chest pain, 00:12:48.34\00:12:50.33 pain down his left arm was the way that his was manifested. 00:12:50.60\00:12:54.06 He and I walked together, 00:12:54.84\00:12:56.36 and about half way around the loop 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.30 he was saying, I need to slow down and take a break, 00:12:59.09\00:13:01.54 I said, just relax a little bit. 00:13:01.55\00:13:03.09 But is this common for people to have 00:13:03.48\00:13:07.24 that kind of stress on their bodies 00:13:07.57\00:13:09.78 that manifests in their arms or their neck? 00:13:10.33\00:13:13.06 Tell us a little bit about that. 00:13:13.48\00:13:14.87 Well, if you live the standard American lifestyle, 00:13:15.30\00:13:17.87 you know the number one cause of death here in the States is 00:13:17.88\00:13:21.09 cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, 00:13:21.48\00:13:23.42 high blood pressure, and strokes 00:13:23.43\00:13:25.06 that's what happens. 00:13:25.27\00:13:27.09 about three thousand Americans everyday die 00:13:28.33\00:13:32.18 from those diseases. 00:13:32.42\00:13:35.00 And it's really sad, because 00:13:35.45\00:13:37.36 if people would live like we 00:13:37.78\00:13:39.72 would try to encourage them to live, 00:13:39.73\00:13:42.15 there was an editorial in the 00:13:42.60\00:13:44.27 journal of the American Medical Association 00:13:44.28\00:13:46.57 in September of 1961 that said, 00:13:46.84\00:13:49.60 97 percent of heart attacks could be. . . 00:13:50.18\00:13:52.60 well they used the word coronary occlusions, 00:13:52.61\00:13:55.21 could be avoided if people ate a vegetarian diet. 00:13:55.51\00:14:00.84 97 percent! 00:14:01.09\00:14:03.39 And that's just for vegetarian diet, 00:14:03.75\00:14:06.09 is that vegetarian diet they're 00:14:06.54\00:14:08.81 referring to vegan? or lactose or what? 00:14:08.82\00:14:11.60 Probably it would include both, 00:14:11.78\00:14:13.30 because I don't think it was a strict vegan 00:14:13.31\00:14:15.30 but that's an amazing statement 00:14:15.69\00:14:17.69 in 1961 which is many years ago. 00:14:18.18\00:14:20.87 So they knew many many years ago, 00:14:21.21\00:14:23.54 and of course we've known even further back than that. 00:14:23.78\00:14:26.36 That's true, that's true. 00:14:26.54\00:14:28.12 Whole plant foods eaten whole that really the way to go, 00:14:28.45\00:14:31.30 and that's what Larry was on, 00:14:31.75\00:14:33.45 it was amazing, even though he adopted 00:14:33.57\00:14:37.27 that type of diet when he first heard 00:14:38.09\00:14:40.63 about it some time around September, 00:14:40.64\00:14:43.15 he was still having chest pain when he got here. 00:14:43.60\00:14:47.03 And so we began to work with him on this 00:14:47.48\00:14:50.00 and we did his first treadmill, and on his first treadmill 00:14:50.27\00:14:53.63 he was able to go about four and a half minutes, 00:14:54.36\00:14:57.03 but when we repeated his treadmill, 00:14:57.04\00:14:58.78 and we stopped the treadmill because of the chest pain, 00:14:59.06\00:15:01.87 and the pain down his left arm, 00:15:02.24\00:15:03.72 which was his manifestation of angina. 00:15:03.73\00:15:05.57 and the second treadmill he was able to go 00:15:06.12\00:15:08.63 for seven minutes before he got the angina, 00:15:08.64\00:15:11.24 and not only that, but when he got it 00:15:11.54\00:15:14.39 it went away sooner than with the first time. 00:15:14.81\00:15:17.57 So he was able to do more, 00:15:18.12\00:15:19.75 his circulatory system had improved, 00:15:19.87\00:15:23.63 and he was able to walk 00:15:23.87\00:15:25.21 further before he got the angina. 00:15:25.22\00:15:26.87 Now when he. . . and you may not know the 00:15:27.42\00:15:29.45 answer to this. . . but when he initiated 00:15:29.46\00:15:31.45 his vegetarian diet, his vegan diet, 00:15:31.78\00:15:35.00 did he initiate a exercise an exercise 00:15:35.63\00:15:38.06 program at the same time? It seems like he didn't. 00:15:38.07\00:15:41.06 I'm really not aware of that, I don't recall if he did or not. 00:15:41.45\00:15:46.51 But he certainly went with the diet, 00:15:46.78\00:15:48.42 and he did lose weight on the diet. 00:15:48.43\00:15:49.87 And that's another 00:15:50.24\00:15:51.36 interesting thing that we find is 00:15:51.37\00:15:53.36 they've done studies, one of my colleagues 00:15:53.81\00:15:56.33 in preventative medicine Dr. Serena Tonstad 00:15:56.34\00:15:58.78 just published a paper in 2009, 00:15:59.39\00:16:01.33 comparing diets with a vegan diet 00:16:01.63\00:16:04.51 which is all plant foods, no dairy and no eggs, 00:16:05.27\00:16:08.66 with a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, 00:16:08.67\00:16:11.09 and with a diet that then included fish, and then chicken, 00:16:11.75\00:16:15.54 and then non vegetarian with meat 00:16:15.55\00:16:17.69 fish chicken and all of the above, 00:16:17.70\00:16:19.84 and the more meat and animal products that were added 00:16:20.36\00:16:23.51 and even just the eggs and the dairy, 00:16:24.09\00:16:26.06 the weight went up, 00:16:26.07\00:16:27.06 and then the number of 00:16:27.07\00:16:28.21 people that had diabetes went up. 00:16:28.22\00:16:29.81 So if you want to lower your risk for diabetes, 00:16:30.30\00:16:33.03 and you want to lower your risk for heart disease, 00:16:33.04\00:16:35.75 the way to go is a totally plant based diet 00:16:36.15\00:16:39.18 and then of course you want to take a little 00:16:39.63\00:16:42.54 vitamin B12 to make sure that that's covered. 00:16:42.55\00:16:45.42 but you do that, and combined with exercise and 00:16:45.57\00:16:48.27 that's really going to avoid a lot of health problems. 00:16:48.28\00:16:51.27 Now aside from the obesity, 00:16:52.09\00:16:54.06 and the cardiovascular or heart disease as you call it, 00:16:54.63\00:16:58.18 and the diabetes, 00:16:58.63\00:16:59.78 were there other issues that he had? 00:17:00.33\00:17:02.72 He said he had many things going on. 00:17:02.73\00:17:05.15 Yes, I think he had probably some 00:17:05.42\00:17:07.30 problems with his blood pressure, 00:17:07.31\00:17:09.15 and some arthritis, 00:17:09.60\00:17:11.30 but the main thing that he was 00:17:11.78\00:17:13.18 concerned about was his angina. . . 00:17:13.19\00:17:14.66 well he had also had a 00:17:15.00\00:17:16.69 carotid endarterectomy where they 00:17:16.70\00:17:19.27 looked at the carotid artery, and they found that 00:17:20.60\00:17:22.48 there was really significant narrowing there, 00:17:23.00\00:17:27.63 and when that happens the doctor can put a stethoscope on there, 00:17:28.09\00:17:31.54 and he can hear a little sound called a bruit 00:17:31.55\00:17:34.03 and so they did a endarterectomy on one side, 00:17:34.81\00:17:38.42 the other side wasn't bad enough at that time to do it. 00:17:38.87\00:17:42.75 When I examined him, and we did an ultra sound here, 00:17:43.30\00:17:46.09 he does have plaque on the other side and like they said 00:17:46.36\00:17:49.12 it's probably not of a sufficient 00:17:49.42\00:17:51.21 degree that they need to do surgery, 00:17:51.22\00:17:53.09 and with his new healthful lifestyle 00:17:53.54\00:17:55.78 hopefully he'll be able to 00:17:56.33\00:17:57.63 avoid that because we know that with 00:17:57.64\00:17:59.42 a good healthful lifestyle like we 00:17:59.87\00:18:01.72 advocate and teach the people at NEWSTART 00:18:01.73\00:18:03.87 those arteries which are narrowed from atherosclerosis 00:18:04.36\00:18:08.57 with the cholesterol deposits, that can slowly be reabsorbed. 00:18:08.78\00:18:12.30 But they've got to be a 100 percent plant based diet 00:18:12.72\00:18:16.78 they don't want to use the eggs and the dairy, 00:18:17.36\00:18:20.18 and of course no meat, fish, or chicken. 00:18:20.19\00:18:22.54 So how's he doing with his medications? 00:18:23.06\00:18:25.42 Has he changed any of his medications? 00:18:25.69\00:18:28.69 His medications are less, 00:18:29.03\00:18:30.27 but the other interesting thing is 00:18:30.28\00:18:31.87 I just talked to him recently, 00:18:32.27\00:18:34.00 and after he went home near the end of December we find. . . 00:18:34.24\00:18:36.84 I was talking to him I said, Larry how are things going? 00:18:37.21\00:18:39.69 He said, I'm feeling good, 00:18:40.00\00:18:41.27 I'm still exercising, I've lost more weight. 00:18:41.28\00:18:43.36 So he's lost another 22 pounds, that means he's lost a total of 00:18:43.75\00:18:47.30 80 pounds since he started on the vegan diet, 00:18:47.63\00:18:50.48 and 22 pounds in the month since he finished NEWSTART, 00:18:52.06\00:18:55.66 so he's doing really well. 00:18:55.84\00:18:57.27 And he's going to continue with that, 00:18:57.54\00:19:00.27 and he'll continue to improve. 00:19:00.72\00:19:02.66 Well we're going to have to get him 00:19:02.78\00:19:04.45 back up here and do another interview. 00:19:04.46\00:19:06.18 I'm excited for him because I know 00:19:06.63\00:19:08.54 he wanted more than anything to 00:19:08.81\00:19:11.21 eliminate that pain in his chest and arms. 00:19:11.22\00:19:14.24 So what can we expect in the future 00:19:14.75\00:19:19.21 for the people. . . our viewing audience 00:19:19.66\00:19:24.30 that they can do to help them correct this terrible disease? 00:19:24.36\00:19:30.51 Well if a person has coronary artery disease 00:19:31.42\00:19:34.00 with narrowing of the 00:19:34.06\00:19:35.06 arteries so their getting angina, 00:19:35.07\00:19:36.48 they really need to check with their doctors 00:19:36.72\00:19:40.66 and have an evaluation. 00:19:41.03\00:19:42.30 But in our experience if their stable, 00:19:42.54\00:19:45.24 and they're willing to make lifestyle changes, 00:19:45.51\00:19:47.78 we find that those arteries 00:19:48.84\00:19:50.57 which have been narrowed will open up 00:19:50.58\00:19:52.78 with a lifestyle change which includes a vegan diet, 00:19:53.00\00:19:56.33 exercise, stress control, 00:19:56.34\00:19:57.84 all of the NEWSTART principles. 00:19:58.15\00:19:59.75 And they can do very very well. 00:20:00.33\00:20:02.03 This is something they need to continue with 00:20:02.48\00:20:04.36 even when they leave the program, 00:20:05.51\00:20:07.24 and really for the rest of their 00:20:07.54\00:20:08.78 life if they want the best health, 00:20:08.79\00:20:10.15 and that's what we've found, and we've seen it time 00:20:10.57\00:20:12.66 and time again and I really think it's worth while 00:20:12.67\00:20:14.72 for the patients to do this. 00:20:15.24\00:20:17.45 I certainly would encourage 00:20:17.81\00:20:19.30 friends and family members if they had a similar problem 00:20:19.75\00:20:22.48 to go for that approach, 00:20:22.72\00:20:24.00 rather than saying, No I want to go see the surgeon. 00:20:24.45\00:20:27.45 So this is something that everyone 00:20:28.21\00:20:30.66 with heart disease should consider 00:20:30.67\00:20:33.15 but we want to make sure that they are stable, 00:20:33.24\00:20:35.03 and we'll be happy to work with them. 00:20:35.04\00:20:36.39 Now I know that you walk with 00:20:36.69\00:20:38.36 guests around the half mile loop, 00:20:38.37\00:20:40.18 and I've seen you do that over and over again, 00:20:40.66\00:20:43.12 and why do you do that? 00:20:43.57\00:20:45.51 Well, it's good for the patient, 00:20:46.09\00:20:48.03 and it's good for me. 00:20:48.15\00:20:49.78 You can sit in the office and talk, 00:20:50.33\00:20:52.03 but I'd rather say, if we're just going to visit and I can 00:20:52.15\00:20:55.00 still talk about your medical problems, 00:20:55.01\00:20:56.84 lets do a walk and talk. 00:20:56.85\00:20:58.06 Why do a sit and talk when you can do a walk and talk? 00:20:58.36\00:21:00.57 Did you notice a difference when you 00:21:01.75\00:21:03.57 walked with him around the half mile loop? 00:21:03.58\00:21:05.60 after he'd been here for two weeks? 00:21:06.06\00:21:07.39 That's right, because he could walk further, 00:21:07.51\00:21:10.27 and the other thing is if they have the angina, 00:21:10.54\00:21:12.51 I don't want them to walk 00:21:12.52\00:21:13.51 fast enough that they get the angina, 00:21:13.81\00:21:15.81 I want them to go slower 00:21:15.82\00:21:17.15 so that they avoid the angina. 00:21:17.45\00:21:19.24 And I've seen other 00:21:19.69\00:21:20.72 patients when this happens as well. 00:21:20.73\00:21:22.51 Dr. Ing I want to thank you for joining us in the studio, 00:21:23.00\00:21:25.51 it's always good to have you here. 00:21:25.78\00:21:27.24 It's great to be here. 00:21:27.25\00:21:28.24 And folks don't go away, we'll be right 00:21:28.30\00:21:30.33 back with an important message for you. 00:21:30.34\00:21:32.33 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:47.00\00:21:48.78 I'm your host Don Mackintosh, we're glad you're with us today, 00:21:48.79\00:21:51.72 and we're glad to have in the studio today Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:21:52.06\00:21:55.09 Welcome Dr. Nedley. 00:21:55.10\00:21:56.09 Thank you, good to be here Don. 00:21:56.27\00:21:57.51 Now you're a doctor in internal medicine, 00:21:57.63\00:21:59.63 but you also have gotten into the area of mental health, 00:21:59.64\00:22:02.36 and helping people increase their emotional intelligence. 00:22:02.54\00:22:05.66 Absolutely, it has more to do with their success and 00:22:06.03\00:22:08.57 happiness in life than any 00:22:08.58\00:22:09.87 other parameter that we can measure. 00:22:09.88\00:22:11.66 Ok, and as you're looking at that 00:22:12.42\00:22:15.12 people many times will reason emotionally you say 00:22:15.75\00:22:18.54 and they have certain distortions, 00:22:19.45\00:22:21.81 thought distortions, cognitive distortions that they get into. 00:22:22.24\00:22:25.27 Right, there's ten different ways of distorted thinking, 00:22:25.54\00:22:28.27 so we teach them those ten ways 00:22:28.28\00:22:29.75 so they can correct that thinking 00:22:29.76\00:22:31.36 before the start getting emotional 00:22:31.69\00:22:33.54 consequences from distorted thoughts. 00:22:33.55\00:22:35.48 And one of them you said is jumping to conclusions? 00:22:35.75\00:22:37.87 Yes, jumping to conclusions, that's what happens 00:22:38.21\00:22:40.72 when people are tired of thinking about something. 00:22:40.73\00:22:43.36 And how they do it is they mind read 00:22:43.78\00:22:46.54 and they also do fortune teller error, 00:22:47.03\00:22:49.21 those are the two aspects of jumping to conclusions. 00:22:49.22\00:22:52.18 And we have to realize that even if we 00:22:52.57\00:22:54.75 know someone very very well, like our spouse, 00:22:54.76\00:22:57.36 studies show we can only read their 00:22:57.81\00:22:59.57 mind by looking at their expressions, 00:22:59.58\00:23:01.36 and seeing what they are talking about, 00:23:01.37\00:23:03.24 we can only read their mind about 80 percent of the time. 00:23:03.25\00:23:05.87 If you don't know somebody very well, 00:23:06.81\00:23:09.15 you're only 25 percent right in 00:23:09.60\00:23:11.66 regards to being able to mind read. 00:23:11.67\00:23:13.87 And so we assume all sorts of motives, 00:23:14.63\00:23:17.00 we assume all sorts of things that people are thinking, 00:23:17.21\00:23:20.57 and we're just plain wrong 00:23:20.58\00:23:22.24 a significant portion of the time, 00:23:22.60\00:23:24.72 and our emotions are 00:23:24.73\00:23:26.03 based on this jumping to 00:23:26.04\00:23:27.48 conclusions in regard to mind reading. 00:23:27.49\00:23:29.72 So you just go down this road and it may not even be so. 00:23:30.60\00:23:33.51 Adversely affects relationships significantly. 00:23:33.69\00:23:36.69 So the other thing that you talk about is magnification. 00:23:36.84\00:23:40.36 Yes, now this is where we get things out of proportion. 00:23:40.81\00:23:45.06 One of the most famous ways of magnifying things 00:23:45.15\00:23:49.60 is to tell yourself that you can't stand something, 00:23:49.87\00:23:52.60 we call it I-can't-stand-it-itis. 00:23:52.75\00:23:54.66 And you know when we take a look at it, 00:23:54.78\00:23:56.51 there's only one thing that a human being cannot stand. 00:23:56.52\00:23:58.78 What is that? - and that's death. 00:23:59.30\00:24:00.72 Everything else a human being actually can stand, 00:24:01.42\00:24:03.84 but when they tell themselves they can't stand it, 00:24:03.85\00:24:06.42 their emotions get out of control. 00:24:06.43\00:24:08.12 And so I've even had to teach 00:24:08.36\00:24:10.54 my kids growing up a little song: 00:24:10.55\00:24:13.00 I don't like it, I don't like it, 00:24:13.15\00:24:15.63 it's ok, it's ok, 00:24:15.64\00:24:16.87 I can stand it anyway, I can stand it anyway, 00:24:16.88\00:24:20.30 I'm alright, I'm alright. 00:24:20.31\00:24:22.15 And it helps them to realize that 00:24:22.36\00:24:23.81 just because they don't like something, 00:24:23.82\00:24:25.57 doesn't mean they can't stand it, and so there's 00:24:25.58\00:24:27.72 not a reason for the emotions to get out of control. 00:24:27.73\00:24:30.06 It causes low frustration tolerance, 00:24:30.18\00:24:32.18 loss of temper, all sorts of problems due to magnification. 00:24:32.19\00:24:35.33 That's a great song to learn before 00:24:35.51\00:24:37.03 you go to the mall with your family. 00:24:37.04\00:24:38.45 I actually heard you teach that song, 00:24:38.57\00:24:40.45 and so I taught my kids that, 00:24:40.46\00:24:41.81 and we sing it when ever I say no about something. 00:24:41.82\00:24:44.27 So magnification, what about emotional reasoning? 00:24:44.75\00:24:48.21 Emotional feeling goes like this, 00:24:48.60\00:24:50.51 I feel like a dud, therefore I am a dud, 00:24:50.52\00:24:52.69 or I feel overwhelmed and helpless, 00:24:53.18\00:24:55.15 and thus my problems are impossible to solve, 00:24:55.16\00:24:57.54 or, I don't feel like doing anything right now, so I won't. 00:24:58.03\00:25:01.00 Procrastinators do emotional reasoning, people that don't 00:25:01.21\00:25:03.63 want to change their lifestyle 00:25:03.64\00:25:05.00 even though they know they should, 00:25:05.01\00:25:06.39 it's simply due to emotional reasoning. 00:25:06.57\00:25:08.51 And the solution to that is realize 00:25:09.00\00:25:11.21 that feelings come and feelings go 00:25:11.22\00:25:13.30 and feelings are deceiving, 00:25:13.45\00:25:14.60 in fact that's another song as well. 00:25:14.61\00:25:16.15 Feelings come and feelings go, and feelings are deceiving. 00:25:16.36\00:25:19.81 and we finish it out, trust alone on the word of God, 00:25:20.36\00:25:23.18 it's something worth believing. 00:25:23.19\00:25:24.75 And so we need to get to 00:25:25.21\00:25:26.63 absolute truth, and not into this 00:25:26.64\00:25:28.54 emotional reasoning that's 00:25:28.55\00:25:30.12 really going to adversely affect us. 00:25:30.13\00:25:32.18 So there needs to be some kind of 00:25:32.48\00:25:34.12 truth that transcends our feelings and 00:25:34.13\00:25:36.15 emotions that we just trust in on the 00:25:36.16\00:25:37.87 basis of principle rather than how we feel. 00:25:37.88\00:25:40.63 Absolutely, and that's how we 00:25:40.72\00:25:42.33 positively change our lifestyle even. 00:25:42.34\00:25:44.30 That's why emotional reasoning and emotional intelligence is 00:25:44.42\00:25:47.18 so vitally important to 00:25:47.19\00:25:48.24 staying healthy and getting healthy. 00:25:48.25\00:25:49.81 If people are interested in learning more about 00:25:50.36\00:25:52.78 emotional intelligence and how it relates to their lives, 00:25:52.79\00:25:55.72 you have some things that you actually teach on this. 00:25:55.73\00:25:58.42 Yes absolutely, we have a whole 17 hour 00:25:58.60\00:26:00.87 course on emotional intelligence that's taught, 00:26:00.88\00:26:03.63 There are some good books that go along with this 00:26:03.87\00:26:07.00 that can teach anyone to significantly improve their EQ, 00:26:07.01\00:26:10.33 and this will positively 00:26:10.34\00:26:11.78 affect their life from here on out. 00:26:11.79\00:26:13.84 We've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley, 00:26:14.66\00:26:16.12 we've been talking about 00:26:16.13\00:26:17.12 all these emotional reasonings and emotional intelligence, 00:26:17.24\00:26:20.06 and maybe you or someone you know struggles with. . . 00:26:20.51\00:26:22.81 in fact I know that you know someone 00:26:22.82\00:26:24.42 that probably struggles with this. 00:26:24.81\00:26:26.27 We're glad you joined us today, 00:26:26.51\00:26:27.87 thank you for being with us Dr. Nedley. 00:26:27.88\00:26:29.63 And if you would like more information, 00:26:30.30\00:26:32.45 go to our website: 00:26:32.46\00:26:33.57 And we have some links there where you can 00:26:35.57\00:26:37.39 get in touch with materials concerning this 00:26:37.40\00:26:39.18 and many other programs. Thank you for joining us. 00:26:39.57\00:26:41.48 Modern views of evolution stem all the way 00:26:49.00\00:26:51.39 back to theories developed in the mid 1800s. 00:26:51.40\00:26:53.81 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:54.84\00:26:58.00 our educational system today. 00:26:58.21\00:27:00.24 The common school movement for example, 00:27:01.24\00:27:03.12 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:03.27\00:27:05.18 with students blindly memorizing 00:27:05.24\00:27:07.12 instruction rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:07.13\00:27:09.78 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical, 00:27:10.66\00:27:13.06 instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:13.51\00:27:15.63 It was designed to conform the individual 00:27:16.18\00:27:18.54 into a specific ideological mold, 00:27:18.63\00:27:21.24 that fit the needs of a old industrial era, long since past. 00:27:21.60\00:27:25.06 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:26.69\00:27:29.81 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:30.12\00:27:34.06 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:34.33\00:27:36.63 Well friends that's it for today. 00:27:49.87\00:27:51.72 My prayer is that the Lord bless you abundantly, 00:27:52.51\00:27:55.36 in the meantime, pick up the phone though 00:27:56.42\00:27:58.21 and give us a call at: 00:27:58.36\00:28:00.75 Have a great week, see you next time. 00:28:03.15\00:28:05.21
