Hi folks, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:23.60\00:00:27.36 I have a real special lady with us today. 00:00:27.37\00:00:30.78 Susan comes to us from Florida. 00:00:31.09\00:00:35.45 She flew out and joined our NEWSTART program 00:00:35.63\00:00:38.72 a couple of weeks ago with several issues. 00:00:38.73\00:00:43.42 And rather than tell you about it, 00:00:43.72\00:00:45.75 let's break away to when she first arrived. 00:00:45.87\00:00:49.15 What caused me to come to the NEWSTART program is 00:00:50.42\00:00:53.18 I've had lupus. 00:00:53.42\00:00:55.03 I've been diagnosed with lupus, 00:00:55.18\00:00:56.81 I've got fibromyalgia. 00:00:57.00\00:00:58.87 I've had a lot of pain issues. 00:00:59.00\00:01:02.18 Just kind of, my life has been taken away from me. 00:01:02.36\00:01:05.60 Because I've been in so much pain, 00:01:06.09\00:01:07.57 I couldn't exercise. 00:01:07.58\00:01:08.57 I didn't really have a lot of hope when I came. 00:01:09.15\00:01:14.24 Actually I was pretty low. 00:01:14.54\00:01:18.00 I didn't think there was anything 00:01:18.78\00:01:21.03 that could help me anymore. 00:01:21.04\00:01:22.66 The doctors just kept pushing medicine at me. 00:01:23.36\00:01:27.78 Their answer to everything is Prednisone, 00:01:28.57\00:01:31.12 and all that did was make me blow up 00:01:31.45\00:01:33.39 and gain weight. 00:01:33.57\00:01:35.75 It just made me feel worse 00:01:36.42\00:01:38.09 instead of making me feel better. 00:01:38.10\00:01:40.09 So I didn't have a whole lot of hope when I came. 00:01:41.12\00:01:43.60 I wanted a normal life. 00:01:44.33\00:01:46.00 I just wanted my life back, 00:01:46.45\00:01:48.06 that I could choose to get up and 00:01:48.07\00:01:49.81 go outside and walk. 00:01:50.18\00:01:51.42 Or I can choose to go sit in a movie and not 00:01:51.57\00:01:55.60 be in so much pain that I scream when I hit the end of the show 00:01:55.75\00:01:58.57 when I try to get out of the chair. 00:01:58.72\00:02:00.21 Just a normal life, 00:02:00.57\00:02:04.54 and I'd like to share that life with someone. 00:02:04.55\00:02:08.00 So, I would be very open to that as well. 00:02:08.01\00:02:11.69 Welcome back folks, 00:02:14.21\00:02:15.54 and as I promised, Susan Stanley. 00:02:15.55\00:02:17.75 How are you, Susan? Very good, thank you. 00:02:18.21\00:02:19.87 Good to see you. Glad to be here. 00:02:20.24\00:02:21.78 You look like a different gal to me. 00:02:21.79\00:02:23.84 I hope so. 00:02:23.85\00:02:25.33 I feel like a different gal. 00:02:25.42\00:02:26.60 çlaughterÑ 00:02:26.69\00:02:27.75 Well, let's get right in to... 00:02:27.87\00:02:30.39 During our first interview, 00:02:30.40\00:02:32.54 I saw a lot of emotion. 00:02:32.81\00:02:37.30 I saw depression. 00:02:37.75\00:02:40.87 I saw some real pain. Can we talk about that? 00:02:41.15\00:02:46.30 Yeah, you're right. It was all there, all of it. 00:02:46.54\00:02:50.45 I was so engrossed in it that I couldn't 00:02:50.54\00:02:53.06 even see the light of day. 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.57 I was just at the lowest point that you could be. 00:02:55.03\00:03:00.18 So do we have psychiatrists here, 00:03:01.81\00:03:04.12 or what's happened? 00:03:04.13\00:03:05.33 You look so different. Tell me about what is happening. 00:03:05.69\00:03:08.21 I feel different. I feel different from the inside out. 00:03:08.30\00:03:11.03 I don't know if it shows that much 00:03:11.15\00:03:12.72 on the outside, but I truly feel 00:03:12.73\00:03:14.27 different on the inside. 00:03:14.39\00:03:15.60 And no, there's no psychiatrist here. 00:03:15.61\00:03:18.33 There's fellowship, there's love, 00:03:18.63\00:03:20.63 and God is just around everywhere. 00:03:20.72\00:03:23.75 You can feel Him 00:03:24.12\00:03:25.15 everywhere here. Amen. 00:03:25.16\00:03:26.42 It just goes into you, and the walking, you feel it. 00:03:26.72\00:03:32.57 Everyone is here to help you and they want you to get better, 00:03:33.24\00:03:36.45 to where you have no choice. 00:03:36.81\00:03:38.42 You're going to get better if you're here. 00:03:38.43\00:03:40.63 Like it or not, right? That's right. 00:03:40.64\00:03:42.36 That's right, you're going to get better. 00:03:42.63\00:03:44.84 So you said you're feeling better from the inside out. 00:03:45.12\00:03:48.15 Let me say, let me boldly say, 00:03:48.27\00:03:51.48 outwardly you look thinner. 00:03:51.57\00:03:53.51 Thank you. I have lost 11 pounds. 00:03:54.12\00:03:56.18 You lost 11 pounds? Yeah. 00:03:56.48\00:03:57.57 And probably several inches. 00:03:58.09\00:03:59.48 Yes. I didn't get measured initially, 00:03:59.78\00:04:02.63 but yes, I can feel that, because 00:04:02.66\00:04:04.18 my belt loop has definitely gone over a couple of notches, 00:04:04.63\00:04:07.42 which is wonderful. 00:04:07.43\00:04:09.54 So a lot of the walking has helped that, 00:04:09.55\00:04:11.60 and I've toned up too quite a bit 00:04:11.61\00:04:13.63 in my muscles and in my legs. 00:04:13.69\00:04:16.75 How did you deal with the food? Has that been an issue at all? 00:04:18.03\00:04:22.27 Not eating so much is probably the issue, 00:04:23.00\00:04:26.87 Because everything is so good, you want to eat and eat and eat. 00:04:27.09\00:04:29.42 I really didn't think I would like the food at all. 00:04:29.60\00:04:33.39 I really didn't. 00:04:33.42\00:04:35.09 But there's a couple things maybe 00:04:35.33\00:04:38.84 that everyone will say, 00:04:38.85\00:04:40.18 "I didn't like this one or that one." 00:04:40.19\00:04:42.12 But 95 percent of it, you love it. 00:04:42.51\00:04:45.39 It's so good, and it's so easy to do. 00:04:45.40\00:04:47.60 We learned that in cooking class. 00:04:47.61\00:04:49.09 It's so easy to prepare yourself. 00:04:49.33\00:04:51.36 And I'm not a cook, so that really troubled me. 00:04:51.66\00:04:55.87 But it's going to be easy to do. 00:04:56.27\00:04:57.63 Why would the food be an issue for you? 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.21 Were you a meat-eater prior to coming here? 00:05:00.24\00:05:03.33 Oh, most definitely. 00:05:03.51\00:05:04.81 A meat-eater, a cake-eater, a cookie-eater, a bunny-eater. 00:05:04.82\00:05:08.21 So we don't serve meat here, right? 00:05:08.78\00:05:11.03 Right, no. 00:05:11.15\00:05:12.45 How about cookies? Yes, we have cookies. 00:05:12.48\00:05:14.42 Mmm, and we have pie. çlaughterÑ 00:05:14.69\00:05:18.06 But we have good, healthy cookies and pie. 00:05:18.18\00:05:20.42 We do, and you don't even know! 00:05:20.43\00:05:22.33 You don't miss it. 00:05:22.34\00:05:23.48 Isn't that amazing? 00:05:23.51\00:05:24.51 Yep. You don't even miss it at all. 00:05:24.52\00:05:26.06 What about some of the other issues 00:05:26.18\00:05:28.15 you had when you arrived here? 00:05:28.16\00:05:29.72 Well, because of my lupus I had a lot of joint issues, 00:05:30.09\00:05:35.12 where I was all swollen. 00:05:35.39\00:05:38.27 You haven't been able to see these knuckles in a while, 00:05:38.51\00:05:42.24 because I was so swollen all in here. 00:05:42.45\00:05:44.57 And all the swelling-- it's just amazing. 00:05:44.75\00:05:47.06 All the swelling has gone down. 00:05:47.07\00:05:48.72 The food is anti-inflammatory, 00:05:49.03\00:05:52.48 So all my joints have just... 00:05:52.69\00:05:56.27 All the swelling has come out of my joints. 00:05:56.45\00:05:58.21 I'm sure hydro has had 00:05:58.42\00:05:59.51 something to do with that as well. 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.18 But the main component from what I understand is the food. 00:06:01.45\00:06:05.27 Okay. Did you enjoy, or... 00:06:05.66\00:06:09.00 did you have your hydrotherapy? 00:06:09.09\00:06:11.03 Yeah, I had...well, actually I had fever baths. 00:06:11.36\00:06:13.69 They're not so much enjoyable except that you know 00:06:14.12\00:06:18.12 at the end you're going to have an amazing result 00:06:18.21\00:06:22.48 when you get through all 15 of the therapies. 00:06:22.54\00:06:25.30 Tell us about those baths that you had. 00:06:25.39\00:06:28.24 Well, they put you in a hot tub, 00:06:28.72\00:06:31.30 of water, which just feels wonderful when you have 00:06:31.48\00:06:34.24 aches and pains in your joints and muscles. 00:06:34.30\00:06:36.51 And then they heat your body up to about 102-103 degrees, 00:06:36.72\00:06:41.84 and you stay with that fever for 20 minutes. 00:06:42.27\00:06:45.75 And then they cool your body down. 00:06:46.03\00:06:48.48 And the whole time the tech 00:06:48.66\00:06:50.33 is there with you, and she's putting 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.45 ice on your neck, on your head, and making you 00:06:52.66\00:06:54.81 as comfortable as she can possibly make you. 00:06:55.06\00:06:56.84 After that they cool the water down. 00:06:57.18\00:07:00.54 You get up, and then you go back 00:07:00.66\00:07:02.57 to your room for an hour and rest. 00:07:02.58\00:07:04.51 You really feel good afterwards. 00:07:05.03\00:07:08.06 Did you have any of the hot wax treatments for your hands? 00:07:08.30\00:07:11.18 No, I didn't. 00:07:11.51\00:07:13.06 Okay. I had no hope. 00:11:37.30\00:11:40.33 Yeah, well see, that's the main thing. 00:11:40.66\00:11:43.15 It's not false hope. 00:11:43.16\00:11:44.39 Because sometimes even if a person 00:11:44.72\00:11:46.54 doesn't get what they think... 00:11:46.55\00:11:48.15 They might read one of our newsletters 00:11:48.45\00:11:51.45 and somebody lost 50 pounds, 00:11:51.60\00:11:53.69 which can happen. It did happen 00:11:53.81\00:11:56.09 a couple of times. And they say, 00:11:56.30\00:11:57.72 "Well, I'm 175 pounds. 00:11:58.00\00:12:01.00 I wonder what I'll look like at 125 pounds 00:12:01.45\00:12:04.24 in two weeks?" So you know, these kind of things. 00:12:04.54\00:12:07.09 So sometimes... But when they see other people 00:12:07.30\00:12:11.36 getting what they get, 00:12:11.66\00:12:13.24 which is spectacular... 00:12:13.42\00:12:15.18 Cholesterol drops and stuff like that. They say, 00:12:15.24\00:12:16.87 "Wow! Even though maybe I 00:12:17.33\00:12:19.66 didn't do exactly what I wanted, 00:12:19.84\00:12:21.66 I feel better." And she, 00:12:21.81\00:12:23.75 she didn't tell all the story. And I don't know whether... 00:12:23.84\00:12:26.78 She said we could use whatever. 00:12:27.00\00:12:29.51 Yeah, well you can get into that. 00:12:29.72\00:12:31.27 I think that's fine. 00:12:31.28\00:12:32.27 You know, I didn't mention to her, 00:12:32.30\00:12:34.39 and I want to repeat it, 00:12:34.40\00:12:35.78 that when I came here I had no idea 00:12:36.06\00:12:39.42 the amount of weight I was going to lose. 00:12:39.69\00:12:41.57 I thought I would lose some weight 00:12:41.66\00:12:43.15 because I was going to change, 00:12:43.16\00:12:44.33 but I lost 70 pounds! 00:12:44.57\00:12:46.45 Over a period of how long? 00:12:46.63\00:12:48.06 Well, it was a couple of years. 00:12:48.24\00:12:50.78 I didn't try 00:12:51.03\00:12:52.27 for the first year real hard, but 00:12:52.48\00:12:54.48 it kept peeling off. 00:12:54.49\00:12:56.03 I think the majority was the first six or eight months. 00:12:56.27\00:12:59.12 We'll have to talk about that some time when we 00:12:59.45\00:13:02.09 talk about somebody that came primarily for obesity. 00:13:02.30\00:13:04.78 Yes. Yeah, it's amazing. 00:13:05.06\00:13:06.60 So with regards to Susan... 00:13:07.09\00:13:08.69 Once again, I don't mean to put you on the spot, 00:13:08.84\00:13:11.84 because she was only here for like fourteen days. 00:13:12.18\00:13:15.33 Well, it was sixteen when she left, but yeah. 00:13:15.54\00:13:19.57 Since it was Thanksgiving we had to hurry everybody home. 00:13:20.48\00:13:23.03 Yes, yes. 00:13:23.15\00:13:24.33 But she had such great change. 00:13:24.54\00:13:27.15 She just seemed so vivacious, so 00:13:27.30\00:13:29.39 much more alive. 00:13:29.69\00:13:31.36 What happened? 00:13:31.39\00:13:32.60 Well, one of the pills-- We talked about this 00:13:33.30\00:13:34.72 in an earlier interview. 00:13:34.73\00:13:36.15 One of the pills that she takes just makes her feel sick. 00:13:36.16\00:13:39.09 And which one was that? 00:13:39.42\00:13:41.30 Well, the Plaquenil that she had to take for-- 00:13:41.63\00:13:45.45 She had all these joint problems and everything. 00:13:45.60\00:13:48.30 And I don't know... 00:13:48.51\00:13:50.33 Did she make it real plain in the interview 00:13:50.39\00:13:52.69 that she had systemic lupus 00:13:52.78\00:13:54.84 erythematosus (SLE)? 00:13:55.18\00:13:56.63 She didn't use those words, 00:13:56.72\00:13:58.63 which are easier for you to say. 00:13:58.64\00:14:00.36 She said she had lupus. 00:14:00.37\00:14:01.54 Yeah, yeah, okay. 00:14:01.63\00:14:02.66 But she didn't use that long term. 00:14:02.67\00:14:04.75 I can't even say it. 00:14:04.84\00:14:05.87 Yeah, but anyway, 00:14:06.18\00:14:07.24 see, that's something that you realize 00:14:07.54\00:14:09.39 you're going to have to take this 00:14:09.51\00:14:10.63 and your going to have to take prednisone, 00:14:10.64\00:14:12.21 and you're going to have to... 00:14:12.22\00:14:13.21 You might have to go on methotrexate in order to 00:14:13.22\00:14:16.03 just survive, you see. 00:14:16.30\00:14:18.24 And some of those things, they just... 00:14:18.36\00:14:21.42 Sometimes people get by on low doses, 00:14:21.63\00:14:23.36 sometimes they have to 00:14:23.37\00:14:24.36 load you up on it to stop a flare-up and stuff like that. 00:14:24.42\00:14:29.03 If you've been through it and you know how it did, you just... 00:14:29.48\00:14:33.00 You almost lose hope after a while. 00:14:33.81\00:14:36.27 In fact, you do. 00:14:36.28\00:14:37.33 Yeah, she tells us she lost hope. 00:14:37.42\00:14:40.09 What was all the inflammation 00:14:40.39\00:14:42.84 and the pain in the joints and such? 00:14:42.85\00:14:45.81 Well, with the SLE-- it's easier to say-- 00:14:46.21\00:14:49.69 your body attacks itself. 00:14:49.84\00:14:51.78 Ah, okay. 00:14:52.39\00:14:54.09 It can attack joints, it can attack kidneys, 00:14:54.21\00:14:56.39 and just basically, eventually, 00:14:56.66\00:14:59.27 too many things have been attacked. 00:14:59.28\00:15:02.12 And that's tough. 00:15:02.75\00:15:05.15 And to realize that 00:15:05.48\00:15:08.24 when you have the flare-ups again you're going to have to 00:15:08.42\00:15:11.15 take the prednisone, which is going to make you 00:15:11.27\00:15:15.00 gain weight and retain fluid. 00:15:15.27\00:15:17.87 And when you have to keep taking the... 00:15:18.12\00:15:20.87 this is the... 00:15:20.88\00:15:22.06 hydrochloroquine, the things that we use for malaria. 00:15:22.57\00:15:26.15 The people that are in malaria areas, 00:15:26.39\00:15:28.18 they quit taking that after a while 00:15:28.19\00:15:29.78 because of the side effects, 00:15:29.79\00:15:31.15 vision and other things. 00:15:31.36\00:15:34.06 Doctor, tell us about... She had two treadmill tests. 00:15:34.27\00:15:39.24 Tell us about how she fared on the second one, 00:15:39.63\00:15:43.33 because the first one, I understood, 00:15:43.51\00:15:46.03 she wasn't able to walk that long. 00:15:46.04\00:15:48.27 Yeah, and pain is a great limiter on everything. 00:15:48.54\00:15:54.36 So just to be able to get up there and do just a little bit, 00:15:54.75\00:15:59.33 just a few seconds, a half a minute, 00:15:59.72\00:16:01.75 a minute and a half, or something like that, 00:16:02.00\00:16:03.30 you just give up, and to be able to improve. 00:16:03.48\00:16:06.48 But the thing is, 00:16:06.78\00:16:08.51 what she didn't say, 00:16:08.75\00:16:10.15 and I'm going to take the liberty to say it, 00:16:10.16\00:16:11.87 is that she had almost a 30-pack 00:16:12.39\00:16:15.60 year history of cigarette smoking. 00:16:15.61\00:16:18.87 She did not say. Yeah, she quit! 00:16:19.15\00:16:21.63 Yeah, people aren't proud of that. 00:16:21.72\00:16:22.72 But she got off of it and she was thrilled. 00:16:23.03\00:16:25.51 Oh my goodness. Yep, yep. 00:16:25.57\00:16:27.15 Isn't that amazing? 00:16:27.21\00:16:28.21 Yeah, I hope she isn't cross with me for saying that. 00:16:28.24\00:16:32.09 Now, do we have a quit smoking program here? 00:16:32.18\00:16:34.57 Yeah, you have to, or you have to walk off campus, 00:16:35.24\00:16:39.12 and if you want to do it at 3 o'clock in the morning 00:16:39.18\00:16:42.57 and it's 30 degrees outside, you 00:16:42.63\00:16:44.66 figure out something else. 00:16:44.81\00:16:46.48 You know, we've seen people walk off campus to smoke. 00:16:46.75\00:16:49.60 Yeah, and they're welcome to do that, 00:16:50.21\00:16:51.51 but they really want to quit smoking 00:16:51.52\00:16:53.06 most of the time. That's why they're here. 00:16:53.07\00:16:54.63 And that was the case with Susan. 00:16:55.00\00:16:56.27 Yeah, and you know, she had... 00:16:56.51\00:17:01.03 They always have trouble in the first few days, 00:17:01.54\00:17:03.75 but she just feels like she's free from it now. 00:17:03.84\00:17:06.33 That's why the follow-up is so important. 00:17:06.87\00:17:09.21 The other thing is, she told me at the banquet, 00:17:09.42\00:17:13.24 and I said this in one of the other interviews, 00:17:13.63\00:17:15.84 I told her what had happened over and over and over again 00:17:16.24\00:17:20.12 with people that had this lupus. 00:17:20.51\00:17:23.45 And it's not supposed to be anything that cures it. 00:17:23.72\00:17:26.21 It just goes back and forth and stuff like that. 00:17:26.24\00:17:28.12 But I told her about the people that have gone into remission. 00:17:28.42\00:17:31.00 Five years, seven years, ten years... 00:17:31.18\00:17:33.57 They have to stay with the program in order to do that. 00:17:33.78\00:17:36.51 And sometime the medications, like methotrexate, 00:17:36.87\00:17:40.51 which is something that you give them, 00:17:40.72\00:17:44.48 and you give them enough so that 00:17:44.63\00:17:46.33 it helps them to go into remission, 00:17:46.34\00:17:48.15 sometimes they suffer from that for months afterwards. 00:17:48.42\00:17:52.87 It suppresses the white count and 00:17:53.30\00:17:55.87 it just feels sick, and we've had patients that 00:17:56.12\00:17:58.87 it's taken them six months now, 00:17:59.09\00:18:00.84 and they're starting to feel themselves again. 00:18:00.85\00:18:03.48 Doctor, during one of our interviews 00:18:04.33\00:18:07.57 you mentioned Doctor Esselstyn. 00:18:07.58\00:18:10.36 And you mentioned his findings 00:18:10.37\00:18:13.72 and his reports with regards to food only. 00:18:13.81\00:18:18.03 And you also mentioned that we do exactly what 00:18:18.48\00:18:22.63 Doctor Esselstyn has prescribed for his patients? 00:18:22.64\00:18:26.63 What he recommends... 00:18:27.00\00:18:29.18 His was kind of a prototype, 00:18:29.48\00:18:31.84 and so anything that had even natural oils in it... 00:18:32.15\00:18:35.03 But we find out from other research 00:18:35.48\00:18:38.12 that's done, good research... 00:18:38.13\00:18:40.21 Loma Linda University did this with nuts, 00:18:40.39\00:18:42.87 and they found out that a half a cup of raw nuts 00:18:43.15\00:18:46.21 or just barely toasted, 00:18:46.27\00:18:48.00 that that also helps with cholesterol. 00:18:48.24\00:18:50.54 We know that avocados are one of the most 00:18:50.72\00:18:52.84 heart-healthy things you can eat. 00:18:52.85\00:18:54.57 Olives, if you don't use the oil but eat the whole olive. 00:18:55.33\00:18:58.66 That kind of oil is good for you. 00:18:58.84\00:19:00.57 So some people say, 00:19:00.58\00:19:01.69 "I've read studies where if you totally leave out all the oil, 00:19:01.75\00:19:05.84 then you're not going to be healthy." 00:19:06.24\00:19:08.09 Well we don't leave out all the oil. 00:19:08.18\00:19:09.69 But we still get the same kind of cholesterol reductions. 00:19:09.87\00:19:13.12 We see people that, maybe they struggled... 00:19:13.21\00:19:15.63 I see rare cases 00:19:16.09\00:19:17.75 where people have struggled for years 00:19:18.21\00:19:20.24 and even as they're doing it, as they lose weight, 00:19:20.36\00:19:22.84 their cholesterol doesn't come down. 00:19:23.15\00:19:25.06 And we check them later and... 00:19:25.33\00:19:26.48 One guy's cholesterol was well below 150, 00:19:26.69\00:19:32.87 and his risk ratio was the lowest I've ever seen, 00:19:33.12\00:19:36.66 and he did it for years. 00:19:36.69\00:19:37.75 I want to be clear on something. 00:19:38.15\00:19:39.78 When you say we don't leave out all the oils, 00:19:40.03\00:19:43.66 what you mean is we don't add oil itself but we have it 00:19:44.15\00:19:48.21 in the foods that we eat. 00:19:48.51\00:19:50.03 Yeah, we don't leave out 00:19:50.18\00:19:51.18 all the plant foods that have oil in them. 00:19:51.19\00:19:52.78 Avocados, nuts, and stuff... 00:19:53.51\00:19:56.21 but we don't add the oils to the food, 00:19:56.22\00:19:58.15 so they can eat the avocados. 00:19:58.16\00:19:59.54 And people love avocado. 00:19:59.69\00:20:01.75 That's nature's mayonnaise, 00:20:02.00\00:20:03.84 thick spread, thin spread, it's everything. 00:20:04.36\00:20:07.21 If you hate avocados, 00:20:07.45\00:20:08.72 you'll learn to like them on this program. 00:20:08.73\00:20:11.33 Because your taste buds change. 00:20:11.60\00:20:13.06 And then the nuts. It's really nice to 00:20:13.09\00:20:16.03 sprinkle some whole nuts on things, and we do that. 00:20:16.15\00:20:19.00 One of the patients said that we did 00:20:19.24\00:20:21.39 some simple foods down at our house. 00:20:21.40\00:20:23.51 And the olives, they're good for you, but 00:20:23.78\00:20:27.12 you don't want to add the oil, 00:20:27.13\00:20:29.18 because that turns the 00:20:29.24\00:20:30.27 cholesterol mechanism on in the liver. 00:20:30.28\00:20:31.87 So are you recommending that the people at home, our viewers, 00:20:32.42\00:20:36.21 should perhaps stop all 00:20:36.33\00:20:38.75 oils that they're... 00:20:38.76\00:20:40.66 Yeah, eat the oils still in the fiber. 00:20:40.72\00:20:43.51 Yes. So whole foods eaten whole. 00:20:44.15\00:20:46.57 That's all you need to know. 00:20:46.75\00:20:48.30 Well Doctor Lukens, 00:20:49.75\00:20:51.00 again I want to thank you for joining us. 00:20:51.01\00:20:53.51 It's always a pleasure to talk with you. 00:20:54.00\00:20:56.30 It's my pleasure to see these people like this. 00:20:56.42\00:20:57.72 How can you top that? 00:20:57.81\00:20:59.87 It's really tough. 00:21:00.30\00:21:01.72 And folks, we hope that you'll pick up that phone and dial: 00:21:02.12\00:21:06.00 Ask for Doctor Lukens. 00:21:10.15\00:21:11.45 Hello, and wecome to NEWSTART Now. 00:21:25.48\00:21:27.21 I'm Don Mackintosh, 00:21:27.27\00:21:28.66 and joining me in the studio today is Dr. Michael Orlich. 00:21:28.78\00:21:31.27 Welcome, Doctor Mike. Thank you. Glad to be here. 00:21:31.63\00:21:34.15 Today we're going to talk about osteoporosis. 00:21:34.39\00:21:37.03 Doctor, what is that? 00:21:37.21\00:21:39.24 Do we need to be concerned about it? 00:21:39.42\00:21:41.84 What can we do about it? 00:21:42.00\00:21:43.00 Well, we do need to be concerned 00:21:43.24\00:21:45.33 or at least aware about osteoporosis. 00:21:45.34\00:21:47.66 It is a significant problem affecting 00:21:47.78\00:21:50.06 quite a lot of people throughout the world 00:21:50.12\00:21:52.24 and the United States in particular. 00:21:52.25\00:21:54.06 Osteoporosis, more than anything, 00:21:54.48\00:21:57.12 is a disease of brittle bones. 00:21:57.27\00:21:59.39 The bones get less dense, less strong, over time, 00:21:59.48\00:22:03.30 and this can lead to fractures. 00:22:03.57\00:22:05.30 This is especially true in women after menopause, 00:22:05.45\00:22:08.30 in elderly women, but also in men. 00:22:08.45\00:22:11.63 And what can we do to avoid it? 00:22:12.30\00:22:14.48 Well, whenever you think of bone health, 00:22:14.78\00:22:17.42 the first thing you probably think of is calcium. 00:22:17.69\00:22:20.06 Of course. 00:22:20.18\00:22:21.33 And calcium is very important. 00:22:21.63\00:22:23.81 You do need adequate sources of calcium in the diet. 00:22:24.15\00:22:27.81 So whatever your diet is, whether it's a plant-based diet 00:22:28.06\00:22:31.66 or a diet that includes animal foods, 00:22:31.87\00:22:34.87 you need to make sure that 00:22:35.09\00:22:36.57 you have adequate sources of calcium, 00:22:36.58\00:22:38.69 because many diets don't. 00:22:38.84\00:22:40.33 But calcium is not the only factor. 00:22:40.45\00:22:43.33 Okay, well I want to know the other factors, 00:22:43.57\00:22:45.54 but what are some sources of calcium in the diet? 00:22:45.69\00:22:47.63 When I was in nursing school I always 00:22:47.78\00:22:50.48 realized that the best answer was probably 00:22:50.51\00:22:52.39 green leafy vegetables. 00:22:52.40\00:22:53.39 Is that still true in this case? 00:22:53.57\00:22:54.57 That is absolutely true. 00:22:54.81\00:22:56.39 You hit it on the head, and it is true for many things. 00:22:56.60\00:22:59.09 They are wonderful 00:22:59.21\00:23:00.51 vegetables, but some of your greens 00:23:00.72\00:23:03.27 like collard greens, kale, bok choy, 00:23:03.36\00:23:08.33 these types of greens are high in calcium. 00:23:08.60\00:23:11.18 I would recommend having these on a regular basis 00:23:11.24\00:23:14.63 in your diet to help get enough calcium. 00:23:14.78\00:23:17.84 You should eat these in sufficient quantities. 00:23:18.09\00:23:20.66 I should note that spinach in particular 00:23:20.87\00:23:23.51 has something called oxylate in it, 00:23:23.52\00:23:25.72 which means its calcium is not as well absorbed. 00:23:26.18\00:23:29.33 So some of the other greens would be better sources. 00:23:29.39\00:23:31.87 So Popeye the Sailorman really wasn't getting the best source 00:23:32.15\00:23:34.69 when he ate the spinach. 00:23:34.72\00:23:36.18 But was strong, wasn't he? He was strong anyway. 00:23:36.19\00:23:38.48 Well you know, all those foods that you mentioned 00:23:38.75\00:23:40.69 are the kind of things we see here in the NEWSTART cafeteria. 00:23:40.70\00:23:43.09 It's interesting that they would know that. 00:23:43.27\00:23:44.66 Of course, you would expect them to. 00:23:44.75\00:23:46.12 But you mentioned something else. 00:23:46.24\00:23:47.63 You said that calcium is not the only part of this picture. 00:23:47.64\00:23:51.18 What did you mean? That's right. 00:23:51.19\00:23:53.12 Certainly equally as important, if not more important, 00:23:53.33\00:23:56.45 may be vitamin D. 00:23:56.57\00:23:57.75 In fact, if someone was diagnosed with osteopenia, 00:23:58.09\00:24:01.09 which is sort of pre-osteoporosis, 00:24:01.10\00:24:03.48 where the bones are starting to get thin. 00:24:03.60\00:24:05.42 One of the first things that I would recommend that they do 00:24:05.57\00:24:08.27 is have a blood level of vitamin D checked. 00:24:08.57\00:24:11.51 If that's low, that's correctable 00:24:11.69\00:24:14.03 and may deal with the problem. 00:24:14.27\00:24:16.75 You can't absorb calcium well 00:24:17.00\00:24:19.21 unless you have enough vitamin D on board. 00:24:19.39\00:24:21.60 So vitamin D, you could get that from 00:24:22.24\00:24:24.09 walking out in the sunlight or some kind of supplement. 00:24:24.10\00:24:26.21 Absolutely. That's correct. 00:24:26.30\00:24:28.06 In addition to vitamin D, 00:24:28.07\00:24:29.87 exercise is critically important, 00:24:30.27\00:24:32.36 and weight-bearing exercise is very important. 00:24:33.69\00:24:35.66 This is where you're putting the weight of your body 00:24:35.67\00:24:37.72 as a stress or strain on your leg bones, on your spine. 00:24:37.87\00:24:41.06 This would be things like walking, jogging, etc. 00:24:41.09\00:24:44.42 You know, in the Mir space station, 00:24:44.51\00:24:47.57 the Russian space station, 00:24:47.66\00:24:49.15 those cosmonauts would come back after a few months having lost 00:24:49.21\00:24:52.63 much of their skeletal mass. 00:24:52.87\00:24:55.03 And that's because of the lack of gravity. 00:24:55.21\00:24:57.33 But in the current international space station, 00:24:57.36\00:25:00.06 they have a rigorous exercise program 00:25:00.21\00:25:02.69 with weight-bearing excercises that put stress on the bones. 00:25:02.78\00:25:06.00 And they don't lose any bone mass, 00:25:06.21\00:25:08.15 even when they're there for months. 00:25:08.24\00:25:09.54 So exercise is critically important. 00:25:09.60\00:25:11.39 A couple of other things that are important are vitamin K, 00:25:11.75\00:25:14.72 that's important for bone health. 00:25:14.87\00:25:16.39 Many people don't realize that. Where do you get that? 00:25:16.45\00:25:18.48 That's in those dark green leafy vegetables as well. 00:25:18.51\00:25:21.42 It's also important not to have an excess amount of protein, 00:25:21.60\00:25:25.54 especially animal-based protein 00:25:25.69\00:25:27.57 which may lead to leaching of calcium 00:25:27.66\00:25:30.27 from your bones into your urine. 00:25:30.28\00:25:32.39 This is also true with high-sodium diets. 00:25:32.51\00:25:36.03 So all that extra salt and sodium in the prepared foods 00:25:36.04\00:25:39.51 is not only bad for your blood pressure and for heart disease. 00:25:39.63\00:25:42.21 It could also put you at risk for osteoporosis as well. 00:25:42.60\00:25:45.75 So the action point today then is, 00:25:46.21\00:25:48.06 get out there and exercise, 00:25:48.07\00:25:49.45 eat the right foods, those green leafy vegetables, 00:25:49.66\00:25:52.09 have weight-bearing exercise when you're exercising, 00:25:52.24\00:25:54.78 get the sunlight, 00:25:54.84\00:25:56.00 and mostly just get out there and move, right? 00:25:56.24\00:25:58.72 That's right. It's not just one point but a whole lifestyle 00:25:58.81\00:26:01.78 that can help maintain your bone health 00:26:02.03\00:26:03.81 as well as prevent other diseases. 00:26:03.82\00:26:05.42 Well, thank you Doctor Mike for being with us, 00:26:05.57\00:26:07.39 and thank you for being with us. 00:26:07.57\00:26:08.69 We hope that as a result of today's program 00:26:08.84\00:26:10.87 you can get a "new start now." 00:26:11.09\00:26:12.48 But also, that start may mean going to our website 00:26:12.81\00:26:15.30 where there's more information. 00:26:17.39\00:26:18.48 Again, thanks for joining us, 00:26:18.57\00:26:20.24 and have a "new start, " right now. 00:26:20.25\00:26:22.12 Hi, I hope that you've enjoyed as much 00:26:30.42\00:26:32.45 as I have this edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:26:32.46\00:26:34.51 I'm Jim Brackett, executive vice president 00:26:35.06\00:26:37.27 here at the Weimar Center, 00:26:37.28\00:26:38.60 I want to take just a moment to give you an idea of some 00:26:39.21\00:26:41.42 of the wonderful resources we have here at the bookstore, 00:26:41.43\00:26:43.57 such as Dr. Nedley's book Proof Positive. 00:26:43.84\00:26:46.42 Now in addition to Dr. Nedley's book, 00:26:47.36\00:26:49.36 he has a series on depression recovery. 00:26:49.37\00:26:51.42 We have the NEWSTART lifestyle 00:26:51.60\00:26:53.66 series on DVD by our NEWSTART physicians, 00:26:53.67\00:26:56.39 relating to topics like diabetes, 00:26:56.72\00:26:58.66 heart disease, cancer. 00:26:58.67\00:27:00.00 We have a number of authors who have cookbooks here, 00:27:00.36\00:27:03.30 including some in the raw field. 00:27:03.63\00:27:05.39 Now we'd love to have you stop by and visit 00:27:05.84\00:27:07.75 us for your shopping, but you can do it online at: 00:27:07.76\00:27:10.51 Click the link that says bookstore. 00:27:11.87\00:27:13.54 Or use our 800 number, 00:27:13.84\00:27:16.33 And by the way, anytime your order is $100 or more, 00:27:19.00\00:27:22.24 we'll see that you get free the NEWSTART lifestyle cookbook. 00:27:22.69\00:27:26.69 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:30.39\00:27:32.39 But if you're like Susan and you're suffering 00:27:32.72\00:27:34.81 from some disease like lupus, 00:27:35.06\00:27:37.57 fibromyalgia, 00:27:37.84\00:27:39.27 or depression, cardiovascular disease, 00:27:39.45\00:27:42.42 cancer, diabetes, 00:27:42.57\00:27:44.45 pick up that phone. 00:27:44.48\00:27:45.75 Give us a call at: 00:27:45.76\00:27:47.03 We hope to see you next week. 00:27:58.15\00:28:00.00 In the meantime, may God richly bless you 00:28:00.18\00:28:04.00 in all ways. 00:28:04.21\00:28:05.30
