00:23 Hi folks, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now.
00:27 We have in our studio today Tamara Skaar. 00:30 from Reno. 00:33 Tamara came to us a couple weeks ago with some 00:36 problems with her feet, 00:38 a little obesity, 00:40 some depression, 00:42 and I'd like to show you a clip about 00:44 her when she first arrived. 00:46 So let's break away for that right now. 00:49 I come from a family who is very large. 00:55 We like our meat, we like our food. 00:57 And our hips and our rear ends feel it. 01:01 What brought me to the NEWSTART program was 01:05 I've got plantar fasciitis 01:07 in my feet, 01:09 and I'm gaining weight, 01:15 and I've got to lose weight. I want to improve my health 01:19 and my family's health. 01:23 My perfect outcome from this program 01:27 would be to have no pain in my feet 01:30 or very little, 01:33 and to lose a good 20 pounds. 01:38 If I keep walking and keep with the program I think I will 01:43 lose that 20 that I want to lose. 01:45 That's my goal 01:47 for while I'm here. 01:49 That would be perfect and would be spiritually ideal. 01:55 Welcome back, and in our studio like I promised, 01:58 Tamara, how are you? 02:00 Good. Good to see you. 02:01 Good to see you. 02:02 Well, I've got to say, 02:05 you've accomplished some of your goals, at least visually. 02:08 You look much leaner, 02:11 you look happier, you look a lot better. 02:13 Tell us about your stay here at the NEWSTART program. 02:16 Well, I lost a few inches. 02:18 What do you mean by "a few inches"? 02:20 I'm not sure how many. 02:22 Your clothes are fitting you a lot better...? 02:24 My clothes are loose. 02:26 That happens, you know. 02:28 That happens, and has happened with guests in the past. 02:31 They lose several inches. 02:33 Some don't even lose any weight. 02:34 But go on, let's tell about you. 02:36 Yeah, I've only lost about four pounds, 02:40 but the inches are the big one that I can see. 02:44 I've had a great time. 02:46 This place is wonderful. 02:48 The food is good. 02:50 The people that I've 02:52 gotten to stay with are just so nice. 02:55 The best part is the doctor comes and eats with us. 02:58 And he fixed us dinner one night. 03:01 Really! And your doctor is Doctor... 03:04 Well that was Doctor Lukens. 03:06 Wonderful. Is he a good cook? 03:09 Oh yeah. He's a very good cook. 03:11 And I've enjoyed the trails. 03:13 The trails are just... It's so beautiful around here. 03:17 Did you get to walk all 15 miles of trails? 03:20 No, I tried. 03:22 Too many appointments. 03:25 Now tell us about your feet. I know you were 03:28 suffering from a disease. Tell us about that. 03:31 I've got plantar fasciitis, 03:35 and it's where the large muscle in the bottom of your foot 03:39 is tight. 03:40 And it makes every muscle from in your calf 03:44 and it can go clear up to your hips, 03:47 tight, and it can be very debilitating. 03:53 So how's the change? Has there been a change? 03:56 Oh, there's been a big change. 04:00 Now I have very little pain in my feet. 04:03 I can get up in the morning and 04:07 walk without looking like a little old lady 04:10 walking across the street. 04:13 Wonderful! 04:15 So what else has happened? I know that when 04:18 our first interview took place, 04:20 you seemed to be a little down, and now you seem happier. 04:24 Yeah, I feel better. 04:26 The diet has been wonderful. 04:29 I feel I have more energy. 04:32 Everybody around here has been so supportive and nice. 04:40 They've helped us, 04:43 not just me, but others, 04:45 with dealing with the depression 04:49 and being able to get out of it. 04:53 With regard to your visits with Doctor Lukens, 04:57 how many visits did you have with your doctor? 05:04 I believe four or five. 05:06 And did you visit a long time? 05:07 Did you spend time talking about your problems 05:10 and your conditions? 05:13 Oh yeah. When he was here he gave me a full eye exam 05:18 and everything. It was great. 05:22 So what do you think it was that helped 05:25 with your foot problem and your weight loss? 05:29 The weight loss was definitely the diet and exercise, 05:34 and the foot one was the people in hydrotherapy. 05:41 They are very knowledgeable on the human body and the muscles, 05:48 and they happened to know a stretch 05:53 that is used on Olympic athletes, 05:57 and they tried it on me. 06:00 In two days I started to turn around. 06:04 So the people in hydrotherapy, 06:07 so we can explain to our viewers, 06:09 the hydro and the therapy together 06:11 are a combination of water treatments 06:15 and massage therapy, right? 06:17 Right. And did you have both? 06:18 I had both. Okay. 06:20 In fact, I get foot baths. 06:23 They go from hot to cold, hot to cold. 06:27 And then they massage the calves and the feet afterwards. 06:34 Wonderful. 06:36 I want to ask you about the lectures. 06:38 I know there were several lectures you attended. 06:41 Do you think that these lectures 06:43 added to the change in your life? 06:46 Oh yes. 06:48 The lectures were very informative. 06:50 I learned a lot of stuff 06:52 from the lectures. 06:56 There was a lot that I didn't know 07:01 that I got out of it, 07:03 and there was some that I did know. 07:07 But like the morning thing, Fresh Start, 07:11 that's where you get the spiritual peace. 07:15 So in the morning you get together 07:17 and they call this Fresh Start, 07:19 where you meet with the chaplain? 07:21 Is that who...? 07:22 The chaplain comes in and she does a little lecture 07:26 in the morning on... like this morning it was prayer. 07:33 And she'll have a little theme every day. 07:38 For a half hour you get to listen to her tell stories and 07:42 talk about whatever the subject of the day is. 07:46 It's a great way to start the day. 07:49 Amen. 07:51 You mentioned that you'd been 07:53 out of work for about three months. 07:55 Now do you have plans to go back to work? 07:57 Yes. 07:59 When is that? 08:00 December eighth. 08:01 Oh wonderful! Good so soon. 08:04 Yes, and I'll be able to stand there and do my job again. 08:09 Wonderful. Yeah. 08:10 And you hadn't been able to do your job because you 08:12 weren't able to stand on your feet, is that right? 08:15 Right. Okay, so 08:17 when you go home, what are you going to do that's different, 08:20 that will keep you on this path 08:22 of recovery and losing the weight, 08:26 and as you described, you don't want 08:28 to get thighs like your aunt! 08:31 You mentioned that in the first interview. 08:33 What are you going to do? 08:34 I'm going to keep with this. 08:37 I'm not going to give this up, because it's too good. 08:41 I've tried different diets, 08:46 and this is the only one that I've found 08:49 where I've seen results so soon 08:52 and felt so good. 08:54 I've got a friend I'm going to get walking with me, 08:59 get my daughter to eat the same stuff I'm eating, 09:03 and show her my stretches so she can do them with me. 09:11 Awesome, good. 09:13 Well, I want to give you 09:16 a word of encouragement that I know that 09:19 many thousands of people who have come through our program 09:23 are still with us today because they've followed this regimen. 09:27 And let me remind the viewers that 09:29 this is more of a lifestyle change than a diet. 09:33 We use the word diet from time to time 09:35 only to describe the food. 09:37 I want to thank you for joining us in the studio. 09:40 God bless you, and you have a wonderful day. 09:44 Folks, for a free copy of our brochure 09:48 and our DVD, call: 09:53 and ask for Guest Services. 09:54 Don't go away. We'll be right back. 09:58 Well, you've done very well. 10:06 Do you have diabetes, 10:07 heart disease, high blood pressure, 10:10 or do you weigh too much? 10:12 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 10:15 about our 18-day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 10:18 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 10:21 with laboratory studies 10:23 and an exercise stress test, 10:25 physician consultations, 10:27 culinary school, 10:29 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful trails 10:32 in the foothills of the Sierras. 10:36 Your health is one of the most 10:37 important things that you have. Don't wait. 10:40 Give us a call: 10:45 Or visit our website: 11:04 Hi folks, and welcome back. 11:06 To my left is a familiar face, Doctor Lukens. 11:10 Glad to be here again. 11:11 Good to see you, Doc. 11:13 Now I want to get into this...Tamara, 11:17 and talk about what has happened there. 11:20 She mentioned during her interview 11:22 that she'd lost a lot of inches. 11:24 Tell us about it. Let's start there, please. 11:28 You know, it's really sad in America 11:31 that everybody's so focused on weight. 11:35 And some of my patients go away 11:39 practically well in every area, but they didn't lose 11:43 that 15 pounds, or whatever they had in their mind. 11:46 And she lost inches. 11:49 I may have said this previously... 11:51 We had a lady that came here when this was a 4-week program. 11:56 She lost four dress sizes, 11:59 and her weight was the same. 12:01 She changed the fat 12:03 over to lean body, which is what everybody needs to do 12:07 for every kind of health reason. 12:09 But they had to talk to her like a Dutch uncle because 12:13 she just hadn't lost the weight, 12:16 and that was.... 12:17 So she says, "Well what do I say to my friends? 12:20 Everybody's going to ask me how much I weigh." 12:23 And she really didn't lose any weight. 12:26 And so I would have told her, if I had been here at the time, 12:28 Just pull your dress out to the side and say, "How do I look?" 12:32 But that's the thing, and as we go through the 12:35 checkout stand we see these 12:37 ladies that, they're just so, so thin. 12:41 Some of them aren't healthy. 12:42 Then right after we get through that part of the checkout stand, 12:48 we have all the goodies there, and we're just.... 12:51 And so people are so concentrated on their weight 12:54 when they should be concentrating on the exercise, 12:57 the health, and all those other.... 12:59 That's one of my things. That's what I get off on. 13:01 So what I hear you saying then is, the health 13:04 has not necessarily much to do with the weight when you're 13:08 downsizing and getting healthy. 13:10 Forget about the pounds. Exactly, exactly. 13:12 And she's told people how much 13:14 she's lost in her arms and stuff. 13:16 They don't believe her. 13:17 I could see it during the interview. I could see it. 13:20 There's some other things, 13:23 concerning weights and numbers, 13:26 that changed. 13:28 Tell us about perhaps her cholesterol. 13:30 She didn't mention that. 13:31 but I know that... 13:33 Well, she was going to do that at the banquet last night, 13:35 and she said, "I got so nervous I couldn't remember what to..." 13:38 But see, her cholesterol was 215, 13:41 which is too high even for a woman that's her age, because 13:45 it will keep going higher as it builds up in the body. 13:49 On the second blood draw that she had, 13:54 only two weeks apart, 13:56 it went down to 152. 13:58 It's really amazing. People just say, "Well, 14:02 maybe they mixed your blood up with somebody else." 14:05 But we see that. We see people drop 100 points too. 14:09 And when they get it below 150, according to Doctor Costelli, 14:13 he never saw it in anybody in Framingham. 14:15 that had a heart attack if their 14:18 cholesterol was below 150. That's the mark. 14:21 Without medications. 14:22 We're talking about without medications. 14:24 Now I also want to talk about her plantar fasciitis, 14:28 which kept her, as she tells us, 14:32 from working. She'd been off work for three months. 14:35 Now she comes here, she's here for two weeks, and it's gone. 14:38 Yeah, that's unusual for it to go that fast. 14:41 Sometimes you can be bothered with it for 14:44 three to twelve months, 14:46 and be able to get over it. 14:48 But we see inflammation decrease a lot in every area. 14:54 And I've talked about the prostaglandins so many times. 14:57 When we see that they're only on plant-based foods, 15:02 they get a different prostaglandin 15:04 that dilates the tiny little arteries, 15:06 and it just cuts the inflammation. 15:08 And she's young, compared to...whatever. 15:12 çlaughterÑ 15:13 You mean us? çlaughterÑ 15:15 She's young, and she'll change more quickly. 15:19 She also was having problems with asthma. 15:22 It wasn't a big thing in her life, 15:25 or she would have mentioned that, but... 15:27 But she had had it all her life. 15:28 Yeah, and the thing is, that's going to clear up too. 15:31 I've seen people that were just hopelessly afflicted with asthma 15:36 get to the place where they don't even 15:38 have to use their medications anymore. 15:40 And that's because of 15:41 the animal proteins, especially milk. 15:43 And so for her to do that.... And we see this so much 15:48 in rheumatoid arthritis. 15:50 One of the other patients came in 15:52 and he was able to get off 15:54 one of the medicines they had told him 15:56 that he'd never get off of. 15:57 And he felt a little better. 15:59 Well one of the reasons was the side effects of the medication. 16:03 It was one of the medications 16:05 that we use for malaria over in Africa. 16:07 And even off that medication he was feeling a little bit better 16:12 as far as his pain was concerned in his joints. 16:15 And he didn't have the side effects of the medications 16:19 that were making him feel sick. 16:21 And so all of these things are neat. 16:23 When you can do it with lifestyle, 16:25 and when the body comes in 16:26 with all these good plant-based foods, 16:29 and you get decreased inflammation 16:31 and you get all these areas, 16:33 you're on your way. 16:35 Things change. 16:36 And it's something that you can just 16:38 keep on doing without the side effects. 16:40 So are you saying, or am I hearing you correctly, 16:44 can we agree basically that most of these diseases 16:48 are lifestyle diseases? 16:50 Well, they are lifestyle diseases 16:53 and they're also very much affected by what you eat. 16:57 And in this situation with the prostaglandins, 17:03 you have to eat the plant-based foods, and then 17:07 cancers, and sticky platelets, 17:11 and inflammation, 17:12 and dilation of the blood vessels 17:14 so that your brain, your heart, 17:16 your kidneys are getting all those good 17:21 oxygenations. And you know, 17:24 they're going to start getting healthy. 17:26 It happens quickly. 17:27 But why, Doc, why can't someone, 17:30 like the viewers who are watching right now 17:32 and say, "Well I can do that." 17:34 Can they do that at home 17:35 and not have to come to the NEWSTART program? 17:38 They can do it at home, but the trouble is that 17:41 some of us are so sensitive 17:44 that it only takes something with milk in it occasionally, 17:48 and you just don't get what you get. 17:52 So what we have here at the NEWSTART program at Weimar 17:56 is we have foods 17:59 without any dairy, without any 18:01 animal product, without any fats, 18:03 unless they're nuts. Well, without any added oil. 18:05 No, well, I mean the fat is still in the fibers. 18:08 So we have the olives, we have the avocados, we have the nuts, 18:12 we have the higher-fat seeds. 18:14 But it's still all the way the Lord made it, 18:16 and so when we eat it the way He did it, 18:19 then it's perfect. When we start fiddling, 18:21 taking oil from this one or sugar from that one, 18:24 and adding it to our foods, 18:26 it just isn't as good as the way He did it. 18:28 So hence, whole foods... 18:30 Whole plant foods eaten whole. 18:33 And see, the thing is, 18:35 a lot of the guests this time 18:36 were just thrilled at the cooking school. 18:39 And one of them was a man, too. He said, 18:41 "That's one of the great things about it. I love to cook. 18:44 I just thought this stuff wasn't going to taste good." 18:47 And he said, "Almost everything is perfect." 18:51 I see often the women... Well, number one, 18:54 we get more women on the program than we do men. 18:58 Is that because women take better care of themselves? 19:02 You know, I think that they're more, 19:04 probably more interested in their health 19:06 when they get to a certain stage, 19:08 and they don't want to put up with 19:09 this kind of stuff the rest of their life. 19:11 Men, you know, some of us, some of them, 19:14 they just don't want to complain or they won't say something 19:18 when they really should, and they should be here because 19:21 we lose so many of them to heart attacks. 19:24 Sometimes people that are here, 19:25 they hear that one of their friends at home has 19:27 died of a heart attack, and they just say, 19:29 "Oh, I wish I could have had them here." 19:31 Yeah, if they only would have just 19:33 talked to them a little bit more. 19:34 And you know, aside from our 19:37 18-day program, we have a 3-day program 19:41 that we have throughout the country, 19:43 some of which you've been to. 19:46 Oh yeah, wonderful things happen, too. 19:48 We call that our "Reversing Diabetes and Obesity" program, 19:53 of which I am the director currently. 19:55 That's wonderful. And we finished a program 19:57 in North Carolina just recently. 20:00 And we've been making contact 20:01 with all the people who attended. 20:03 That's wonderful, that's wonderful. 20:05 The numbers are incredible, Doc. 20:07 Women who had feet that were burning 20:10 for three years, no longer are burning. 20:13 People who have had problems 20:15 walking are walking now. 20:17 Blood pressures are dropping. 20:19 Obesity is going away. 20:21 All these wonderful things because of 20:23 the program we have here. 20:25 Yeah, and if you'll look up our researcher, Dr. Milton G. Crane, 20:28 you'll find in clinical nutrition 20:32 the proper study that was done on that, 20:33 and it's wonderful. 20:35 Yeah. 20:36 Well Doc, I want to thank you again 20:38 for joining us in our studio. 20:40 Well, it's my pleasure to talk about this. 20:42 It's always enlightening to talk to you, to say the least. 20:45 Thank you very much. 20:46 And I hope you'll join us again. 20:48 Yep. Always. 20:50 Folks, thank you for joining us. 20:52 Don't go away, because in a couple of minutes 20:55 we're going to give you a tip 20:56 where you can start your own program 20:58 right in your own living room at home. 21:15 Hi. Welcome to NEWSTART Now. 21:16 I'm Don Mackintosh. We're glad you're with us, 21:18 and we're also glad that Dr. Michael Orlich is with us today. 21:22 Doctor Mike, we're glad you're here. 21:24 Thank you. Glad to be here with you. 21:25 We're going to talk today about sunlight, 21:28 but what qualifies you to talk about sunlight? 21:30 What do you do as a physician? 21:32 Well, I'm trained as a family practitioner, 21:35 and I've worked for four years here at the 21:38 NEWSTART lifestyle center 21:40 in lifestyle medicine. 21:42 I'm currently doing some additional 21:43 training in preventive medicine. 21:45 Wonderful. What about sunlight? 21:47 It's part of the NEWSTART acronym. 21:49 We have nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight,... 21:53 What about sunlight? 21:56 Why do we need it? 21:57 Where do we get it? When should we have it? 21:59 All those kind of things. 22:00 You know, I remember when I graduated from medical school, 22:03 in the graduation speech, 22:05 our classmate said that the only thing she was really certain of 22:09 after four years of medical school was, 22:11 Always wear sunscreen. 22:14 And lately the sun has been seen 22:16 as something that's just harmful, 22:19 something that tends to cause cancer. 22:21 But really, we're starting to realize now 22:25 that sunlight is very, very important for health, 22:28 and it's important for a variety of aspects of it. 22:31 So, some people would say one of the most things is 22:34 because you get vitamin D. 22:35 Is there anything to that? 22:36 Vitamin D is the most critical aspect of sunlight. 22:39 There are other benefits, 22:40 like sunlight through your eyes 22:43 can help to regulate your body clock, 22:45 help regulate your sleep cycles, 22:47 help prevent seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder. 22:52 But vitamin D is synthesized in your skin 22:55 from cholesterol that your body makes 22:58 when sunlight strikes your skin. 23:00 And it's this vitamin D that's critical 23:02 to most of the benefits of sunlight. 23:04 So tell me why it's critical. 23:06 What does it do? Where does it do it? 23:08 Well, vitamin D originally was thought 23:10 to only have to do with bone health. 23:13 And they recognized that 23:14 vitamin D was an essential vitamin 23:16 because it prevented rickets, 23:19 the curved bones in young children. 23:22 And later it was realized that 23:24 vitamin D is critical in preventing osteoporosis. 23:27 But they thought, 23:28 "Just a little bit of vitamin D... 23:30 a little bit of vitamin D could help prevent rickets." 23:33 But now we realize that vitamin D is 23:35 critical to almost every cell in your body. 23:39 It helps regulate the cell cycle. 23:42 Cells grow and divide, 23:45 but they're supposed to shut off at certain times 23:48 and stop growing and dividing. 23:50 When they fail to do this, 23:52 this is what leads to cancer. 23:54 Cancer is out-of-control 23:56 cell growth and division. 23:58 So if you don't get vitamin D 23:59 you may have a higher risk for cancer. 24:01 Correct. 24:02 Deficiencies in vitamin D-- And I should say that 24:05 vitamin D deficiency is one of 24:07 the most widespread deficiencies 24:10 in America. 24:11 Deficiencies in vitamin D can lead to a higher risk of 24:15 a variety of types of cancer. 24:18 Such as? 24:20 Such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer. 24:24 There's an increasing amount of evidence 24:26 and an exploding area of research in vitamin D. 24:29 It's one of the hottest areas in medicine. 24:31 And it seems to not only lower your risk 24:34 potentially of these major killer cancers, 24:36 but also of autoimmune diseases. 24:39 These would be diseases like 24:41 multiple sclerosis, 24:43 type one diabetes, 24:44 Crohn's disease. 24:46 They've known for a long time that 24:48 the farther away you get from the equator, 24:50 the farther north you get in the northern hemisphere, 24:53 the higher the rates of multiple sclerosis and 24:55 these types of diseases. 24:57 And it appears that vitamin D is a critical aspect 25:00 to avoiding these diseases. 25:02 Now, the question I have about this is-- 25:04 you've convinced me-- 25:06 when should we get the sunlight? 25:08 When should we go out? 25:09 Or can we just get it in a pill form or a bottle? 25:12 Not the sunlight, but you know, the vitamin D. 25:15 Right. 25:17 It's an important thing to understand. 25:20 Typically you need to get sun 25:22 between 10 am and 2 pm. 25:26 During parts of the year when the sun is strong enough-- 25:29 And you don't need much. 25:30 You don't have to tan, 25:32 and you certainly don't want to burn, 25:34 which can elevate your risk of melanoma. 25:35 Is twenty minutes enough? 25:37 It can just be 5 or 10 minutes on your legs and arms, but 25:40 in the wintertime in the north, 25:43 you can't make enough vitamin D. 25:45 So you probably do need a supplement of 25:47 800 international units or 1000, during the winter months. 25:52 Well, we've been talking with Dr. Michael Orlich. 25:54 We've been talking about sunlight 25:56 as it relates to vitamin D, 25:57 and that's your tip for a new start right now. 26:00 Go out today and start walking in the sun. 26:02 If you're further north and it's during the winter, 26:04 get some of those supplements that he just mentioned. 26:06 If you want more information about this, 26:08 go to our website: 26:11 and you can get more information. 26:13 As a result of today's program, 26:14 we hope that you have a NEW START now. 26:17 Thanks for joining us, and thank you 26:18 for being with us, Doctor Orlich. 26:20 Thank you. 26:28 Hi, I hope that you've enjoyed as much 26:30 as I have this edition of NEWSTART Now. 26:32 I'm Jim Brackett, executive vice president 26:35 here at the Weimar Center, 26:37 I want to take just a moment to give you an idea of some 26:39 of the wonderful resources we have here at the bookstore, 26:41 such as Dr. Nedley's book Proof Positive. 26:45 Now in addition to Dr. Nedley's book, 26:47 he has a series on depression recovery. 26:49 We have the NEWSTART lifestyle 26:51 series on DVD by our NEWSTART physicians, 26:54 relating to topics like diabetes, 26:56 heart disease, cancer. 26:58 We have a number of authors who have cookbooks here, 27:01 including some in the raw field. 27:03 Now we'd love to have you stop by and visit 27:05 us for your shopping, but you can do it online at: 27:09 Click the link that says bookstore. 27:11 Or use our 800 number, 27:16 And by the way, anytime your order is $100 or more, 27:20 we'll see that you get free the NEWSTART lifestyle cookbook. 27:28 Well friends, that's it for today. 27:30 But I want to tell you, 27:32 people call us from all over the world, 27:34 all over the country, 27:35 and they ask us if we can help 27:37 with this, that, or the other thing. 27:39 But as you saw with Tamara-- 27:41 plantar fasciitis, obesity, some depression-- 27:45 we can help in a lot of ways. 27:48 So pick up that phone and call us at: 28:01 Thank you for joining us.
