It was great. 00:05:18.39\00:05:21.69 So what do you think it was that helped 00:05:22.12\00:05:25.27 with your foot problem and your weight loss? 00:05:25.28\00:05:28.69 The weight loss was definitely the diet and exercise, 00:05:29.27\00:05:33.54 and the foot one was the people in hydrotherapy. 00:05:34.15\00:05:40.30 They are very knowledgeable on the human body and the muscles, 00:05:41.09\00:05:48.30 and they happened to know a stretch 00:05:48.69\00:05:53.42 that is used on Olympic athletes, 00:05:53.87\00:05:56.72 and they tried it on me. 00:05:57.03\00:06:00.15 In two days I started to turn around. 00:06:00.54\00:06:03.66 So the people in hydrotherapy, 00:06:04.21\00:06:07.06 so we can explain to our viewers, 00:06:07.39\00:06:09.18 the hydro and the therapy together 00:06:09.30\00:06:11.48 are a combination of water treatments 00:06:11.60\00:06:14.69 and massage therapy, right? 00:06:15.00\00:06:16.63 Right. And did you have both? 00:06:17.03\00:06:18.30 I had both. Okay. 00:06:18.45\00:06:19.87 In fact, I get foot baths. 00:06:20.21\00:06:23.21 They go from hot to cold, hot to cold. 00:06:23.48\00:06:26.57 And then they massage the calves and the feet afterwards. 00:06:27.06\00:06:33.66 Wonderful. 00:06:34.57\00:06:35.87 I want to ask you about the lectures. 00:06:36.24\00:06:38.51 I know there were several lectures you attended. 00:06:38.54\00:06:40.72 Do you think that these lectures 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.75 added to the change in your life? 00:06:43.76\00:06:46.60 Oh yes. 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.15 The lectures were very informative. 00:06:48.36\00:06:50.75 I learned a lot of stuff 00:06:50.76\00:06:52.39 from the lectures. 00:06:52.72\00:06:55.12 There was a lot that I didn't know 00:06:56.57\00:07:01.45 that I got out of it, 00:07:01.87\00:07:03.75 and there was some that I did know. 00:07:03.76\00:07:06.75 But like the morning thing, Fresh Start, 00:07:07.42\00:07:11.12 that's where you get the spiritual peace. 00:07:11.54\00:07:15.15 So in the morning you get together 00:07:15.51\00:07:17.39 and they call this Fresh Start, 00:07:17.40\00:07:19.06 where you meet with the chaplain? 00:07:19.54\00:07:21.51 Is that who...? 00:07:21.52\00:07:22.51 The chaplain comes in and she does a little lecture 00:07:22.75\00:07:25.75 in the morning on... like this morning it was prayer. 00:07:26.21\00:07:31.18 And she'll have a little theme every day. 00:07:33.30\00:07:37.78 For a half hour you get to listen to her tell stories and 00:07:38.12\00:07:41.72 talk about whatever the subject of the day is. 00:07:42.03\00:07:46.06 It's a great way to start the day. 00:07:46.57\00:07:49.51 Amen. 00:07:49.84\00:07:51.24 You mentioned that you'd been 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.06 out of work for about three months. 00:07:53.07\00:07:54.69 Now do you have plans to go back to work? 00:07:55.09\00:07:57.57 Yes. 00:07:57.58\00:07:58.69 When is that? 00:07:58.70\00:07:59.72 December eighth. 00:07:59.84\00:08:01.00 Oh wonderful! Good so soon. 00:08:01.15\00:08:03.72 Yes, and I'll be able to stand there and do my job again. 00:08:04.51\00:08:08.45 Wonderful. Yeah. 00:08:09.42\00:08:10.69 And you hadn't been able to do your job because you 00:08:10.81\00:08:12.87 weren't able to stand on your feet, is that right? 00:08:12.88\00:08:14.84 Right. Okay, so 00:08:15.12\00:08:16.69 when you go home, what are you going to do that's different, 00:08:17.12\00:08:20.09 that will keep you on this path 00:08:20.10\00:08:21.81 of recovery and losing the weight, 00:08:22.09\00:08:26.54 and as you described, you don't want 00:08:26.72\00:08:28.75 to get thighs like your aunt! 00:08:28.76\00:08:30.36 You mentioned that in the first interview. 00:08:31.12\00:08:33.21 What are you going to do? 00:08:33.22\00:08:34.39 I'm going to keep with this. 00:08:34.75\00:08:36.84 I'm not going to give this up, because it's too good. 00:08:37.12\00:08:40.60 I've tried different diets, 00:08:41.33\00:08:45.66 and this is the only one that I've found 00:08:46.15\00:08:49.36 where I've seen results so soon 00:08:49.45\00:08:51.66 and felt so good. 00:08:52.30\00:08:54.42 I've got a friend I'm going to get walking with me, 00:08:54.81\00:08:58.87 get my daughter to eat the same stuff I'm eating, 00:08:59.12\00:09:02.81 and show her my stretches so she can do them with me. 00:09:03.42\00:09:10.51 Awesome, good. 00:09:11.06\00:09:12.45 Well, I want to give you 00:09:13.00\00:09:15.66 a word of encouragement that I know that 00:09:16.12\00:09:19.21 many thousands of people who have come through our program 00:09:19.48\00:09:22.69 are still with us today because they've followed this regimen. 00:09:23.00\00:09:26.87 And let me remind the viewers that 00:09:27.36\00:09:29.66 this is more of a lifestyle change than a diet. 00:09:29.75\00:09:33.06 We use the word diet from time to time 00:09:33.18\00:09:35.66 only to describe the food. 00:09:35.67\00:09:37.36 I want to thank you for joining us in the studio. 00:09:37.63\00:09:40.12 God bless you, and you have a wonderful day. 00:09:40.45\00:09:43.45 Folks, for a free copy of our brochure 00:09:44.12\00:09:48.09 and our DVD, call: 00:09:48.36\00:09:49.84 and ask for Guest Services. 00:09:53.00\00:09:54.54 Don't go away. Don't wait. 00:10:37.82\00:10:39.84 Give us a call: 00:10:40.39\00:10:42.12 Or visit our website: 00:10:45.18\00:10:46.42 Hi folks, and welcome back. 00:11:04.15\00:11:05.84 To my left is a familiar face, Doctor Lukens. 00:11:06.18\00:11:09.48 Glad to be here again. 00:11:10.03\00:11:11.24 Good to see you, Doc. 00:11:11.39\00:11:12.63 Now I want to get into this...Tamara, 00:11:13.06\00:11:16.75 and talk about what has happened there. 00:11:17.15\00:11:19.87 She mentioned during her interview 00:11:20.12\00:11:22.36 that she'd lost a lot of inches. 00:11:22.37\00:11:24.42 Tell us about it. Let's start there, please. 00:11:24.81\00:11:27.69 You know, it's really sad in America 00:11:28.06\00:11:31.24 that everybody's so focused on weight. 00:11:31.69\00:11:34.60 And some of my patients go away 00:11:35.45\00:11:38.42 practically well in every area, but they didn't lose 00:11:39.21\00:11:42.69 that 15 pounds, or whatever they had in their mind. 00:11:43.09\00:11:46.42 And she lost inches. 00:11:46.84\00:11:48.60 I may have said this previously... 00:11:49.03\00:11:51.54 We had a lady that came here when this was a 4-week program. 00:11:51.87\00:11:55.54 She lost four dress sizes, 00:11:56.33\00:11:58.81 and her weight was the same. 00:11:59.39\00:12:01.21 She changed the fat 00:12:01.60\00:12:03.15 over to lean body, which is what everybody needs to do 00:12:03.30\00:12:06.48 for every kind of health reason. 00:12:07.06\00:12:09.45 But they had to talk to her like a Dutch uncle because 00:12:09.72\00:12:12.84 she just hadn't lost the weight, 00:12:13.15\00:12:16.30 and that was.... 00:12:16.51\00:12:17.87 So she says, "Well what do I say to my friends? 00:12:17.88\00:12:20.66 Everybody's going to ask me how much I weigh." 00:12:20.72\00:12:23.00 And she really didn't lose any weight. 00:12:23.42\00:12:25.63 And so I would have told her, if I had been here at the time, 00:12:26.00\00:12:28.78 Just pull your dress out to the side and say, "How do I look?" 00:12:28.81\00:12:31.81 But that's the thing, and as we go through the 00:12:32.21\00:12:35.06 checkout stand we see these 00:12:35.30\00:12:37.06 ladies that, they're just so, so thin. 00:12:37.42\00:12:40.87 Some of them aren't healthy. 00:12:41.18\00:12:42.42 Then right after we get through that part of the checkout stand, 00:12:42.66\00:12:47.75 we have all the goodies there, and we're just.... 00:12:48.03\00:12:51.00 And so people are so concentrated on their weight 00:12:51.45\00:12:54.33 when they should be concentrating on the exercise, 00:12:54.51\00:12:57.09 the health, and all those other.... 00:12:57.33\00:12:59.00 That's one of my things. That's what I get off on. 00:12:59.24\00:13:01.42 So what I hear you saying then is, the health 00:13:01.51\00:13:03.78 has not necessarily much to do with the weight when you're 00:13:04.06\00:13:07.57 downsizing and getting healthy. 00:13:08.00\00:13:10.00 Forget about the pounds. Exactly, exactly. 00:13:10.15\00:13:12.30 And she's told people how much 00:13:12.45\00:13:14.36 she's lost in her arms and stuff. 00:13:14.37\00:13:16.36 They don't believe her. 00:13:16.54\00:13:17.57 I could see it during the interview. I could see it. 00:13:17.84\00:13:20.60 There's some other things, 00:13:20.84\00:13:23.00 concerning weights and numbers, 00:13:23.42\00:13:26.00 that changed. 00:13:26.21\00:13:27.78 Tell us about perhaps her cholesterol. 00:13:28.15\00:13:30.24 She didn't mention that. 00:13:30.25\00:13:31.48 but I know that... 00:13:31.54\00:13:32.63 Well, she was going to do that at the banquet last night, 00:13:32.75\00:13:35.09 and she said, "I got so nervous I couldn't remember what to..." 00:13:35.27\00:13:37.81 But see, her cholesterol was 215, 00:13:38.21\00:13:40.66 which is too high even for a woman that's her age, because 00:13:41.27\00:13:45.06 it will keep going higher as it builds up in the body. 00:13:45.24\00:13:48.75 On the second blood draw that she had, 00:13:49.33\00:13:54.27 only two weeks apart, 00:13:54.36\00:13:55.75 it went down to 152. 00:13:56.60\00:13:58.30 It's really amazing. People just say, "Well, 00:13:58.75\00:14:02.72 maybe they mixed your blood up with somebody else." 00:14:02.84\00:14:05.27 But we see that. We see people drop 100 points too. 00:14:05.33\00:14:08.69 And when they get it below 150, according to Doctor Costelli, 00:14:09.09\00:14:12.66 he never saw it in anybody in Framingham. 00:14:13.06\00:14:15.48 that had a heart attack if their 00:14:15.72\00:14:18.03 cholesterol was below 150. That's the mark. 00:14:18.24\00:14:21.00 Without medications. 00:14:21.45\00:14:22.45 We're talking about without medications. 00:14:22.46\00:14:24.48 Now I also want to talk about her plantar fasciitis, 00:14:24.84\00:14:28.51 which kept her, as she tells us, 00:14:28.84\00:14:31.63 from working. She'd been off work for three months. 00:14:32.06\00:14:34.63 Now she comes here, she's here for two weeks, and it's gone. 00:14:35.03\00:14:38.09 Yeah, that's unusual for it to go that fast. 00:14:38.84\00:14:41.63 Sometimes you can be bothered with it for 00:14:41.64\00:14:43.66 three to twelve months, 00:14:44.24\00:14:46.36 and be able to get over it. 00:14:46.78\00:14:48.69 But we see inflammation decrease a lot in every area. 00:14:48.87\00:14:54.00 And I've talked about the prostaglandins so many times. 00:14:54.09\00:14:57.00 When we see that they're only on plant-based foods, 00:14:57.42\00:15:01.57 they get a different prostaglandin 00:15:02.00\00:15:04.15 that dilates the tiny little arteries, 00:15:04.45\00:15:06.48 and it just cuts the inflammation. 00:15:06.66\00:15:08.60 And she's young, compared to...whatever. 00:15:08.78\00:15:12.06 çlaughterÑ 00:15:12.12\00:15:13.15 You mean us? çlaughterÑ 00:15:13.16\00:15:15.15 She's young, and she'll change more quickly. 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.84 She also was having problems with asthma. 00:15:19.36\00:15:22.60 It wasn't a big thing in her life, 00:15:22.72\00:15:25.24 or she would have mentioned that, but... 00:15:25.48\00:15:27.06 But she had had it all her life. 00:15:27.21\00:15:28.24 Yeah, and the thing is, that's going to clear up too. 00:15:28.48\00:15:31.33 I've seen people that were just hopelessly afflicted with asthma 00:15:31.48\00:15:36.21 get to the place where they don't even 00:15:36.45\00:15:38.15 have to use their medications anymore. 00:15:38.16\00:15:39.69 And that's because of 00:15:40.03\00:15:41.03 the animal proteins, especially milk. 00:15:41.04\00:15:43.06 And so for her to do that.... And we see this so much 00:15:43.48\00:15:47.87 in rheumatoid arthritis. 00:15:48.36\00:15:50.03 One of the other patients came in 00:15:50.09\00:15:52.15 and he was able to get off 00:15:52.39\00:15:54.21 one of the medicines they had told him 00:15:54.36\00:15:56.00 that he'd never get off of. 00:15:56.01\00:15:57.12 And he felt a little better. 00:15:57.48\00:15:59.15 Well one of the reasons was the side effects of the medication. 00:15:59.54\00:16:03.27 It was one of the medications 00:16:03.54\00:16:05.21 that we use for malaria over in Africa. 00:16:05.22\00:16:07.33 And even off that medication he was feeling a little bit better 00:16:07.54\00:16:11.69 as far as his pain was concerned in his joints. 00:16:12.09\00:16:15.27 And he didn't have the side effects of the medications 00:16:15.51\00:16:19.54 that were making him feel sick. 00:16:19.60\00:16:21.09 And so all of these things are neat. 00:16:21.30\00:16:23.12 When you can do it with lifestyle, 00:16:23.18\00:16:25.06 and when the body comes in 00:16:25.07\00:16:26.42 with all these good plant-based foods, 00:16:26.60\00:16:28.87 and you get decreased inflammation 00:16:29.18\00:16:31.51 and you get all these areas, 00:16:31.52\00:16:33.39 you're on your way. 00:16:33.63\00:16:35.30 Things change. 00:16:35.31\00:16:36.30 And it's something that you can just 00:16:36.31\00:16:38.18 keep on doing without the side effects. 00:16:38.19\00:16:40.12 So are you saying, or am I hearing you correctly, 00:16:40.33\00:16:44.06 can we agree basically that most of these diseases 00:16:44.30\00:16:47.66 are lifestyle diseases? 00:16:48.06\00:16:50.00 Well, they are lifestyle diseases 00:16:50.15\00:16:53.39 and they're also very much affected by what you eat. 00:16:53.42\00:16:56.75 And in this situation with the prostaglandins, 00:16:57.09\00:17:02.84 you have to eat the plant-based foods, and then 00:17:03.72\00:17:06.72 cancers, and sticky platelets, 00:17:07.78\00:17:11.21 and inflammation, 00:17:11.42\00:17:12.81 and dilation of the blood vessels 00:17:12.84\00:17:14.81 so that your brain, your heart, 00:17:14.82\00:17:16.60 your kidneys are getting all those good 00:17:16.78\00:17:21.27 oxygenations. And you know, 00:17:21.54\00:17:24.21 they're going to start getting healthy. 00:17:24.30\00:17:25.81 It happens quickly. 00:17:26.09\00:17:27.36 But why, Doc, why can't someone, 00:17:27.39\00:17:29.87 like the viewers who are watching right now 00:17:30.15\00:17:32.30 and say, "Well I can do that." 00:17:32.31\00:17:33.72 Can they do that at home 00:17:34.09\00:17:35.51 and not have to come to the NEWSTART program? 00:17:35.52\00:17:38.18 They can do it at home, but the trouble is that 00:17:38.19\00:17:41.18 some of us are so sensitive 00:17:41.30\00:17:43.72 that it only takes something with milk in it occasionally, 00:17:44.15\00:17:48.72 and you just don't get what you get. 00:17:48.84\00:17:52.42 So what we have here at the NEWSTART program at Weimar 00:17:52.57\00:17:56.03 is we have foods 00:17:56.30\00:17:58.69 without any dairy, without any 00:17:59.03\00:18:01.12 animal product, without any fats, 00:18:01.13\00:18:03.33 unless they're nuts. Well, without any added oil. 00:18:03.36\00:18:05.03 No, well, I mean the fat is still in the fibers. 00:18:05.21\00:18:08.21 So we have the olives, we have the avocados, we have the nuts, 00:18:08.30\00:18:12.72 we have the higher-fat seeds. 00:18:12.84\00:18:14.51 But it's still all the way the Lord made it, 00:18:14.72\00:18:16.75 and so when we eat it the way He did it, 00:18:16.87\00:18:18.84 then it's perfect. When we start fiddling, 00:18:19.24\00:18:21.60 taking oil from this one or sugar from that one, 00:18:21.81\00:18:24.60 and adding it to our foods, 00:18:24.84\00:18:26.12 it just isn't as good as the way He did it. 00:18:26.13\00:18:27.87 So hence, whole foods... 00:18:28.57\00:18:30.66 Whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:18:30.87\00:18:32.87 And see, the thing is, 00:18:33.09\00:18:35.15 a lot of the guests this time 00:18:35.30\00:18:36.69 were just thrilled at the cooking school. 00:18:36.70\00:18:38.66 And one of them was a man, too. He said, 00:18:39.09\00:18:41.30 "That's one of the great things about it. I love to cook. 00:18:41.48\00:18:44.00 I just thought this stuff wasn't going to taste good." 00:18:44.18\00:18:46.87 And he said, "Almost everything is perfect." 00:18:47.30\00:18:50.63 I see often the women... Well, number one, 00:18:51.51\00:18:54.63 we get more women on the program than we do men. 00:18:54.81\00:18:58.03 Is that because women take better care of themselves? 00:18:58.36\00:19:01.51 You know, I think that they're more, 00:19:02.30\00:19:04.27 probably more interested in their health 00:19:04.39\00:19:06.36 when they get to a certain stage, 00:19:06.37\00:19:07.87 and they don't want to put up with 00:19:08.27\00:19:09.66 this kind of stuff the rest of their life. 00:19:09.67\00:19:11.39 Men, you know, some of us, some of them, 00:19:11.48\00:19:14.60 they just don't want to complain or they won't say something 00:19:14.87\00:19:18.39 when they really should, and they should be here because 00:19:18.63\00:19:21.21 we lose so many of them to heart attacks. 00:19:21.57\00:19:23.36 Sometimes people that are here, 00:19:24.15\00:19:25.63 they hear that one of their friends at home has 00:19:25.78\00:19:27.60 died of a heart attack, and they just say, 00:19:27.61\00:19:29.36 "Oh, I wish I could have had them here." 00:19:29.63\00:19:31.39 Yeah, if they only would have just 00:19:31.60\00:19:32.78 talked to them a little bit more. 00:19:32.79\00:19:34.00 And you know, aside from our 00:19:34.39\00:19:37.42 18-day program, we have a 3-day program 00:19:37.87\00:19:41.42 that we have throughout the country, 00:19:41.60\00:19:43.60 some of which you've been to. 00:19:43.78\00:19:46.18 Oh yeah, wonderful things happen, too. 00:19:46.36\00:19:47.84 We call that our "Reversing Diabetes and Obesity" program, 00:19:48.18\00:19:52.66 of which I am the director currently. 00:19:53.00\00:19:55.24 That's wonderful. And we finished a program 00:19:55.30\00:19:57.42 in North Carolina just recently. 00:19:57.63\00:19:59.60 And we've been making contact 00:20:00.00\00:20:01.54 with all the people who attended. 00:20:01.55\00:20:03.33 That's wonderful, that's wonderful. 00:20:03.54\00:20:05.54 The numbers are incredible, Doc. 00:20:05.55\00:20:07.33 Women who had feet that were burning 00:20:07.42\00:20:10.27 for three years, no longer are burning. 00:20:10.39\00:20:13.12 People who have had problems 00:20:13.36\00:20:15.33 walking are walking now. 00:20:15.42\00:20:17.09 Blood pressures are dropping. 00:20:17.10\00:20:19.00 Obesity is going away. 00:20:19.21\00:20:21.03 All these wonderful things because of 00:20:21.24\00:20:23.48 the program we have here. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.03 Yeah, and if you'll look up our researcher, Dr. Milton G. Crane, 00:20:25.06\00:20:28.21 you'll find in clinical nutrition 00:20:28.51\00:20:31.81 the proper study that was done on that, 00:20:32.03\00:20:33.87 and it's wonderful. 00:20:33.88\00:20:34.87 Yeah. 00:20:35.06\00:20:36.09 Well Doc, I want to thank you again 00:20:36.21\00:20:38.24 for joining us in our studio. 00:20:38.25\00:20:39.81 Well, it's my pleasure to talk about this. 00:20:40.15\00:20:42.39 It's always enlightening to talk to you, to say the least. 00:20:42.51\00:20:45.45 Thank you very much. 00:20:45.46\00:20:46.51 And I hope you'll join us again. 00:20:46.66\00:20:48.12 Yep. Always. 00:20:48.39\00:20:50.30 Folks, thank you for joining us. 00:20:50.54\00:20:52.54 Don't go away, because in a couple of minutes 00:20:52.72\00:20:54.87 we're going to give you a tip 00:20:55.24\00:20:56.72 where you can start your own program 00:20:56.73\00:20:58.60 right in your own living room at home. 00:20:58.87\00:21:01.36 Hi. Welcome to NEWSTART Now. 00:21:15.54\00:21:16.87 I'm Don Mackintosh. We're glad you're with us, 00:21:16.88\00:21:18.69 and we're also glad that Dr. Michael Orlich is with us today. 00:21:18.78\00:21:22.00 Doctor Mike, we're glad you're here. 00:21:22.18\00:21:24.06 Thank you. Glad to be here with you. 00:21:24.30\00:21:25.78 We're going to talk today about sunlight, 00:21:25.84\00:21:28.06 but what qualifies you to talk about sunlight? 00:21:28.15\00:21:30.69 What do you do as a physician? 00:21:30.72\00:21:31.81 Well, I'm trained as a family practitioner, 00:21:32.15\00:21:35.39 and I've worked for four years here at the 00:21:35.57\00:21:38.00 NEWSTART lifestyle center 00:21:38.01\00:21:40.18 in lifestyle medicine. 00:21:40.42\00:21:41.84 I'm currently doing some additional 00:21:42.12\00:21:43.66 training in preventive medicine. 00:21:43.67\00:21:45.15 Wonderful. What about sunlight? 00:21:45.45\00:21:47.45 It's part of the NEWSTART acronym. 00:21:47.51\00:21:49.54 We have nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight,... 00:21:49.69\00:21:52.78 What about sunlight? 00:21:53.03\00:21:56.18 Why do we need it? 00:21:56.57\00:21:57.57 Where do we get it? When should we have it? 00:21:57.58\00:21:58.78 All those kind of things. 00:21:58.79\00:21:59.78 You know, I remember when I graduated from medical school, 00:21:59.84\00:22:03.09 in the graduation speech, 00:22:03.33\00:22:05.39 our classmate said that the only thing she was really certain of 00:22:05.57\00:22:09.12 after four years of medical school was, 00:22:09.42\00:22:11.78 Always wear sunscreen. 00:22:11.79\00:22:13.18 And lately the sun has been seen 00:22:14.15\00:22:16.45 as something that's just harmful, 00:22:16.46\00:22:18.75 something that tends to cause cancer. 00:22:19.00\00:22:21.48 But really, we're starting to realize now 00:22:21.75\00:22:25.06 that sunlight is very, very important for health, 00:22:25.27\00:22:28.09 and it's important for a variety of aspects of it. 00:22:28.39\00:22:31.24 So, some people would say one of the most things is 00:22:31.54\00:22:33.81 because you get vitamin D. 00:22:34.09\00:22:35.33 Is there anything to that? 00:22:35.34\00:22:36.33 Vitamin D is the most critical aspect of sunlight. 00:22:36.42\00:22:39.39 There are other benefits, 00:22:39.54\00:22:40.66 like sunlight through your eyes 00:22:40.75\00:22:42.87 can help to regulate your body clock, 00:22:43.18\00:22:45.51 help regulate your sleep cycles, 00:22:45.66\00:22:47.75 help prevent seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder. 00:22:47.87\00:22:52.03 But vitamin D is synthesized in your skin 00:22:52.36\00:22:55.39 from cholesterol that your body makes 00:22:55.57\00:22:57.84 when sunlight strikes your skin. 00:22:58.03\00:23:00.24 And it's this vitamin D that's critical 00:23:00.36\00:23:02.39 to most of the benefits of sunlight. 00:23:02.40\00:23:04.21 So tell me why it's critical. 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.75 What does it do? Where does it do it? 00:23:06.76\00:23:08.30 Well, vitamin D originally was thought 00:23:08.51\00:23:10.69 to only have to do with bone health. 00:23:10.70\00:23:12.72 And they recognized that 00:23:13.06\00:23:14.51 vitamin D was an essential vitamin 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.54 because it prevented rickets, 00:23:16.72\00:23:18.69 the curved bones in young children. 00:23:19.03\00:23:22.24 And later it was realized that 00:23:22.42\00:23:24.12 vitamin D is critical in preventing osteoporosis. 00:23:24.24\00:23:27.12 But they thought, 00:23:27.33\00:23:28.36 "Just a little bit of vitamin D... 00:23:28.48\00:23:30.33 a little bit of vitamin D could help prevent rickets." 00:23:30.48\00:23:33.00 But now we realize that vitamin D is 00:23:33.01\00:23:35.48 critical to almost every cell in your body. 00:23:35.57\00:23:38.21 It helps regulate the cell cycle. 00:23:39.00\00:23:42.63 Cells grow and divide, 00:23:42.78\00:23:45.63 but they're supposed to shut off at certain times 00:23:45.75\00:23:48.15 and stop growing and dividing. 00:23:48.30\00:23:49.60 When they fail to do this, 00:23:50.03\00:23:51.81 this is what leads to cancer. 00:23:52.09\00:23:54.30 Cancer is out-of-control 00:23:54.54\00:23:56.27 cell growth and division. 00:23:56.48\00:23:58.33 So if you don't get vitamin D 00:23:58.36\00:23:59.54 you may have a higher risk for cancer. 00:23:59.55\00:24:01.12 Correct. 00:24:01.36\00:24:02.42 Deficiencies in vitamin D-- And I should say that 00:24:02.78\00:24:05.60 vitamin D deficiency is one of 00:24:05.84\00:24:07.84 the most widespread deficiencies 00:24:07.85\00:24:10.06 in America. 00:24:10.21\00:24:11.45 Deficiencies in vitamin D can lead to a higher risk of 00:24:11.75\00:24:15.66 a variety of types of cancer. 00:24:15.78\00:24:18.45 Such as? 00:24:18.72\00:24:19.78 Such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer. 00:24:20.12\00:24:24.06 There's an increasing amount of evidence 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.48 and an exploding area of research in vitamin D. 00:24:26.57\00:24:29.27 It's one of the hottest areas in medicine. 00:24:29.36\00:24:31.39 And it seems to not only lower your risk 00:24:31.60\00:24:33.87 potentially of these major killer cancers, 00:24:34.09\00:24:36.78 but also of autoimmune diseases. 00:24:36.87\00:24:39.15 These would be diseases like 00:24:39.16\00:24:40.81 multiple sclerosis, 00:24:41.09\00:24:42.78 type one diabetes, 00:24:43.00\00:24:44.33 Crohn's disease. 00:24:44.63\00:24:46.03 They've known for a long time that 00:24:46.15\00:24:48.18 the farther away you get from the equator, 00:24:48.19\00:24:50.57 the farther north you get in the northern hemisphere, 00:24:50.66\00:24:53.03 the higher the rates of multiple sclerosis and 00:24:53.27\00:24:55.75 these types of diseases. 00:24:55.87\00:24:57.03 And it appears that vitamin D is a critical aspect 00:24:57.15\00:25:00.51 to avoiding these diseases. 00:25:00.78\00:25:02.18 Now, the question I have about this is-- 00:25:02.51\00:25:04.57 you've convinced me-- 00:25:04.72\00:25:06.33 when should we get the sunlight? 00:25:06.60\00:25:08.42 When should we go out? 00:25:08.54\00:25:09.69 Or can we just get it in a pill form or a bottle? 00:25:09.78\00:25:11.72 Not the sunlight, but you know, the vitamin D. 00:25:12.45\00:25:15.27 Right. 00:25:15.60\00:25:16.84 It's an important thing to understand. 00:25:17.03\00:25:20.03 Typically you need to get sun 00:25:20.24\00:25:22.81 between 10 am and 2 pm. 00:25:22.87\00:25:25.72 During parts of the year when the sun is strong enough-- 00:25:26.00\00:25:29.24 And you don't need much. 00:25:29.36\00:25:30.66 You don't have to tan, 00:25:30.87\00:25:32.33 and you certainly don't want to burn, 00:25:32.42\00:25:34.00 which can elevate your risk of melanoma. 00:25:34.12\00:25:35.69 Is twenty minutes enough? 00:25:35.70\00:25:36.69 It can just be 5 or 10 minutes on your legs and arms, but 00:25:36.70\00:25:40.69 in the wintertime in the north, 00:25:40.78\00:25:43.00 you can't make enough vitamin D. 00:25:43.21\00:25:45.30 So you probably do need a supplement of 00:25:45.31\00:25:47.51 800 international units or 1000, during the winter months. 00:25:47.52\00:25:52.03 Well, we've been talking with Dr. Michael Orlich. 00:25:52.66\00:25:54.33 We've been talking about sunlight 00:25:54.48\00:25:56.00 as it relates to vitamin D, 00:25:56.01\00:25:57.15 and that's your tip for a new start right now. 00:25:57.21\00:25:59.78 Go out today and start walking in the sun. 00:26:00.30\00:26:02.33 If you're further north and it's during the winter, 00:26:02.48\00:26:04.15 get some of those supplements that he just mentioned. 00:26:04.24\00:26:06.21 If you want more information about this, 00:26:06.48\00:26:08.60 go to our website: 00:26:08.61\00:26:09.66 and you can get more information. 00:26:11.72\00:26:13.39 As a result of today's program, 00:26:13.51\00:26:14.84 we hope that you have a NEW START now. 00:26:14.85\00:26:17.21 Thanks for joining us, and thank you 00:26:17.36\00:26:18.51 for being with us, Doctor Orlich. 00:26:18.52\00:26:19.54 Thank you. 00:26:19.55\00:26:20.54 Hi, I hope that you've enjoyed as much 00:26:28.24\00:26:30.27 as I have this edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:26:30.28\00:26:32.33 I'm Jim Brackett, executive vice president 00:26:32.78\00:26:35.09 here at the Weimar Center, 00:26:35.10\00:26:36.42 I want to take just a moment to give you an idea of some 00:26:37.03\00:26:39.24 of the wonderful resources we have here at the bookstore, 00:26:39.25\00:26:41.39 such as Dr. Nedley's book Proof Positive. 00:26:41.66\00:26:44.24 Now in addition to Dr. Nedley's book, 00:26:45.18\00:26:47.18 he has a series on depression recovery. 00:26:47.19\00:26:49.24 We have the NEWSTART lifestyle 00:26:49.42\00:26:51.48 series on DVD by our NEWSTART physicians, 00:26:51.49\00:26:54.21 relating to topics like diabetes, 00:26:54.54\00:26:56.48 heart disease, cancer. 00:26:56.49\00:26:57.72 We have a number of authors who have cookbooks here, 00:26:58.18\00:27:01.12 including some in the raw field. 00:27:01.45\00:27:03.21 Now we'd love to have you stop by and visit 00:27:03.66\00:27:05.57 us for your shopping, but you can do it online at: 00:27:05.58\00:27:08.33 Click the link that says bookstore. 00:27:09.69\00:27:11.36 Or use our 800 number, 00:27:11.66\00:27:14.15 And by the way, anytime your order is $100 or more, 00:27:16.72\00:27:20.06 we'll see that you get free the NEWSTART lifestyle cookbook. 00:27:20.51\00:27:24.51 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:28.51\00:27:30.54 But I want to tell you, 00:27:30.87\00:27:32.33 people call us from all over the world, 00:27:32.39\00:27:34.12 all over the country, 00:27:34.15\00:27:35.36 and they ask us if we can help 00:27:35.51\00:27:37.09 with this, that, or the other thing. 00:27:37.10\00:27:38.78 But as you saw with Tamara-- 00:27:39.24\00:27:41.72 plantar fasciitis, obesity, some depression-- 00:27:41.73\00:27:45.66 we can help in a lot of ways. 00:27:45.78\00:27:48.36 So pick up that phone and call us at: 00:27:48.54\00:27:50.78 Thank you for joining us.
