Yeah. 00:11:56.18\00:11:57.72 And he's on insulin. 00:11:57.73\00:11:59.42 Well, what happened was that he 00:11:59.84\00:12:02.21 did the best he could with the pills. 00:12:02.33\00:12:05.54 He had those, and his last A1c was over 10. 00:12:05.55\00:12:10.27 What the audience knows I don't know, but 00:12:10.60\00:12:13.21 6.5 is where 00:12:13.33\00:12:16.87 diabetes is diagnosed, and we want it 00:12:17.27\00:12:19.72 between 7 and 8. 00:12:19.78\00:12:21.54 And that's not real good control, 00:12:21.55\00:12:23.48 but his was 10. 00:12:23.57\00:12:25.03 So that means that his body was... 00:12:25.24\00:12:27.84 his tissues were dying. 00:12:27.85\00:12:29.60 Now, he was 10 when he got here, right? 00:12:30.12\00:12:32.75 No, before he came. Before he came. 00:12:33.03\00:12:34.81 And then? So then they... 00:12:35.36\00:12:37.12 Because it's a 3-month test. 00:12:37.36\00:12:39.03 A1c is a 3-month test. 00:12:39.24\00:12:41.27 So then his doctors said, "You're just really... 00:12:41.66\00:12:44.06 You're out of control, 00:12:44.18\00:12:45.51 and you've got to add insulin." 00:12:46.12\00:12:47.24 Well nobody wants to add insulin, you know? 00:12:47.27\00:12:49.12 After they do it for a while they realize, 00:12:49.48\00:12:51.12 Well, this isn't the worst thing in the world. 00:12:51.13\00:12:53.42 But it's tough, because 00:12:53.60\00:12:55.51 then when you have the insulin, 00:12:56.03\00:12:57.39 some of the diabetes medications 00:12:57.57\00:12:59.48 don't give you those low blood sugars. 00:12:59.63\00:13:01.69 But you can range between 500 and 50. 00:13:01.70\00:13:04.51 And they just don't know what to do. 00:13:04.60\00:13:07.15 But what's so amazing, and we've seen this before, 00:13:07.24\00:13:10.09 his problem primarily 00:13:11.06\00:13:13.45 was that he was also an alcoholic. 00:13:14.00\00:13:15.84 And we've seen this before. 00:13:16.39\00:13:18.33 When an alcholic has diabetes, they just don't mix. 00:13:18.48\00:13:23.87 So he was on 65 units of the long-acting Lantus. 00:13:24.15\00:13:30.57 And then every meal he was supposed 00:13:30.87\00:13:33.45 to take 9 of the ultra short-acting 00:13:33.46\00:13:35.84 that goes with the meal. 00:13:36.21\00:13:37.33 This was a really good setup to do. 00:13:37.34\00:13:39.42 But he just wasn't able to control his sugars. 00:13:39.54\00:13:42.72 He would get really low ones and then 00:13:43.00\00:13:44.63 he'd get discouraged because they were so high, 00:13:44.64\00:13:46.42 and he'd feel lousy. 00:13:46.54\00:13:48.21 But the thing was is that, 00:13:48.33\00:13:50.12 he quit primarily tobacco and alcohol. 00:13:50.30\00:13:55.06 And you have to do those, and that's another story. 00:13:55.18\00:13:57.54 But you have to do those at the same time. 00:13:57.75\00:13:59.87 We may have talked about that before. 00:13:59.88\00:14:02.42 So he quits those, 00:14:02.78\00:14:04.27 and then his body starts doing the best that it can 00:14:04.39\00:14:08.15 on these whole plant foods, 00:14:08.21\00:14:09.66 the exercise that he's doing, 00:14:09.78\00:14:11.66 and the liver is amazing. 00:14:11.81\00:14:13.51 It just regenerates so fast 00:14:13.66\00:14:15.54 if you give it a chance. 00:14:15.81\00:14:17.33 We've seen this before. 00:14:17.45\00:14:18.78 So here he's on all this medication, 00:14:18.79\00:14:21.00 and about 24 hours later, 00:14:22.69\00:14:24.72 he was having low blood sugar. 00:14:24.75\00:14:26.72 So I said, Let's just stop the insulin for now. 00:14:26.73\00:14:29.72 He was also on the two, metformin and Actos. 00:14:30.24\00:14:34.69 And so, he was on all four 00:14:35.30\00:14:36.81 of those medications at the same time. 00:14:36.82\00:14:39.12 And his blood sugar had been better than 00:14:39.36\00:14:41.69 the 10.8 or whatever it was that he came in on. 00:14:41.70\00:14:44.75 But he just couldn't control the sugars. 00:14:44.84\00:14:47.33 They were just all over the place. 00:14:47.45\00:14:48.84 So we have seen this before. 00:14:49.09\00:14:51.57 And so when he stopped the alcohol 00:14:52.12\00:14:54.36 his liver started to be able to function again, 00:14:54.37\00:14:56.72 and it was amazing. Within just a few days, 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.57 he was off all of his insulin, 00:14:59.87\00:15:01.75 and then we started taking him off the orals. 00:15:02.03\00:15:04.30 His blood pressure was normal, so we 00:15:04.66\00:15:06.48 took him off two of the blood pressure medications he was on. 00:15:06.51\00:15:11.06 And I said, I really want to know what your actual true value 00:15:11.51\00:15:16.60 of your cholesterol is. 00:15:16.81\00:15:18.69 So let's take you off your statin. 00:15:18.84\00:15:20.81 And so we just went down through the list of things. 00:15:21.00\00:15:23.51 And finally he said, "Let's just stop everything." 00:15:23.75\00:15:26.24 And I said, "Let's do it." 00:15:26.54\00:15:27.63 And you can tell he's thrilled. 00:15:28.03\00:15:30.87 What's thrilling is that the numbers are normal now. 00:15:31.54\00:15:34.87 It's not thrilling just that you got rid of your medications 00:15:35.63\00:15:38.78 and you're all out of control and everything. 00:15:39.09\00:15:41.09 It's so good because God blesses when you do His way. 00:15:41.54\00:15:46.63 And when he saw that, 00:15:46.84\00:15:48.78 he's a believer now. 00:15:49.33\00:15:50.63 So here's the question. 00:15:50.66\00:15:51.66 And I want the viewers to hear this answer 00:15:51.67\00:15:55.36 and listen carefully. 00:15:55.48\00:15:56.87 We've got a good question coming up. 00:15:57.00\00:15:58.51 I know there are several people, 00:15:58.66\00:16:00.84 perhaps thousands, millions, watching 00:16:00.85\00:16:03.39 that have the same conditions as Bill. 00:16:03.63\00:16:07.00 Are you telling us that they too have hope? 00:16:07.30\00:16:11.27 Absolutely. 00:16:11.84\00:16:13.63 And a normal diabetic, without all the substance abuses 00:16:14.18\00:16:19.63 thrown in, can do well. 00:16:20.00\00:16:22.48 It takes a little longer, but when you 00:16:23.12\00:16:25.27 have the mix of the alcohol in there just 00:16:25.28\00:16:27.63 irritating the liver and keeping it from doing its work, 00:16:27.81\00:16:30.69 that's the kicker. 00:16:30.75\00:16:33.18 And we've seen that over and over again. 00:16:33.54\00:16:35.84 And perhaps that's why I changed so rapidly, 00:16:36.24\00:16:40.12 because I was alcoholic when I came here. 00:16:40.13\00:16:42.45 But I know there's people watching 00:16:42.81\00:16:44.63 that are drinking alcohol. 00:16:44.64\00:16:46.03 Perhaps you're tossing a beer right now, 00:16:46.27\00:16:48.45 smoking a cigarette, 00:16:48.57\00:16:50.24 and giving up because you have diabetes. 00:16:50.25\00:16:52.54 You think you're going to die soon. 00:16:52.55\00:16:54.03 Well here is a case 00:16:54.21\00:16:56.18 where there's hope. You don't have to give up. 00:16:56.24\00:16:58.66 We can help you here at our NEWSTART program. 00:16:59.03\00:17:02.15 Especially Doctor Lukens. 00:17:02.24\00:17:03.87 The kidneys are suffering from this 00:17:04.06\00:17:06.48 because of his lifestyle and everything. 00:17:06.49\00:17:10.60 I don't know what all. 00:17:10.61\00:17:11.72 He also had a couple of strokes. 00:17:11.81\00:17:15.42 He didn't mention those, but... 00:17:15.87\00:17:17.42 Well, he did have those, 00:17:17.43\00:17:18.66 and that could have been substance abuse. 00:17:18.81\00:17:21.15 He got them from that. 00:17:21.39\00:17:22.72 Fortunately, he didn't have residuas from that. 00:17:22.73\00:17:25.27 So here's somebody, 00:17:25.28\00:17:26.66 and he said that he had a tough life. 00:17:26.72\00:17:29.21 And we wouldn't go into all that stuff. 00:17:29.36\00:17:31.27 Maybe at another time we could. 00:17:31.28\00:17:33.00 He just came here discouraged, 00:17:33.51\00:17:36.54 but what gave him hope was that he saw his sister-in-law 00:17:36.55\00:17:40.39 do so well, and he thought, 00:17:40.81\00:17:42.48 "Maybe it would help me too." 00:17:42.69\00:17:45.30 And he was just... 00:17:45.63\00:17:47.69 There's one thing that I have to say, though. 00:17:48.03\00:17:50.27 Americans are too focused on weight loss. 00:17:50.45\00:17:53.78 He just kept coming to me, 00:17:54.06\00:17:55.39 "Doc, I'm not losing that weight." 00:17:55.42\00:17:58.24 He's not grossly obese, 00:17:58.36\00:18:00.24 but he has this idea. 00:18:00.27\00:18:02.33 But he was out there. He would do up to 10 miles, 00:18:02.45\00:18:05.39 walking. He hadn't done that. 00:18:05.51\00:18:08.36 A lot of walking, building up that muscle, 00:18:08.75\00:18:11.54 getting the sugars down into control. 00:18:11.84\00:18:14.87 What was so good is that now, when he leaves he has hope. 00:18:15.75\00:18:19.57 He's got determination, and he knows that 00:18:20.39\00:18:23.60 What his job was is crawling in and around 00:18:24.00\00:18:26.75 doing alarms, security systems. 00:18:26.76\00:18:31.30 And he said, "I got to the place where, 00:18:31.57\00:18:33.39 here my gut is. It's sticking out there. 00:18:33.60\00:18:35.84 And I haven't got the energy. 00:18:36.06\00:18:37.54 I've got to crawl through all these places." 00:18:37.66\00:18:40.42 "And one day," he said, "I just gave up." 00:18:40.57\00:18:43.18 He said, "I don't think 00:18:43.19\00:18:44.21 that I'm going to be able to do this." 00:18:44.22\00:18:45.75 Because sometimes he'd come to work and he was drunk. 00:18:45.87\00:18:50.18 He was losing it. 00:18:50.45\00:18:51.66 Now we follow him, and he knows that 00:18:51.87\00:18:53.63 we're going to ask him to come back. 00:18:53.64\00:18:55.36 And he's thrilled and we're thrilled. 00:18:55.54\00:18:58.57 We're happy to pass that news on. 00:18:58.81\00:19:00.57 I have to apologize to the viewers. 00:19:00.58\00:19:02.72 I did say before Doctor Lukens came on 00:19:02.73\00:19:06.54 that we were going to have our next meeting with Bill 00:19:07.09\00:19:10.03 four months down the road. 00:19:10.12\00:19:11.39 We may still have that, 00:19:11.48\00:19:13.03 but instead of that being a part of this program, 00:19:13.15\00:19:16.42 we decided to bring Doctor Lukens in, because 00:19:16.57\00:19:19.60 there's such a miracle that has taken place. 00:19:19.78\00:19:22.27 We wanted your opinion, if you will, 00:19:22.45\00:19:25.39 to tell us how these things happen. 00:19:25.51\00:19:27.84 and to once again give people hope 00:19:28.27\00:19:31.36 that they too can get well. 00:19:31.45\00:19:33.15 Yes, and you see, this substance abuse didn't start 00:19:34.03\00:19:38.39 when he was 30 years old or whatever. 00:19:38.45\00:19:42.18 It was through the years, and he did have a tough life. 00:19:42.66\00:19:45.66 And sometimes when you're out 00:19:46.03\00:19:47.39 with your buddies and stuff like that, 00:19:47.40\00:19:49.21 you try a few things. 00:19:49.60\00:19:51.06 And a lot of people in his age group 00:19:51.07\00:19:53.33 try different stuff. But then he got hooked on it. 00:19:53.63\00:19:56.00 And then leaving some of that off, 00:19:56.51\00:19:58.72 then you get the legal ones. 00:19:59.27\00:20:00.69 And he was knocking down a lot of alcohol. 00:20:01.03\00:20:04.15 It was amazing that his body could take as much as he did. 00:20:04.51\00:20:07.75 And then he was smoking. 00:20:08.12\00:20:09.63 Like we said, you have to stop both of those at the same time. 00:20:10.12\00:20:13.12 Now he has hope and he knows that this can happen. 00:20:14.75\00:20:19.12 He's shared with us that he's enjoyed the food, 00:20:19.51\00:20:22.12 he's enjoyed the stay, 00:20:22.30\00:20:23.57 but he put a lot of emphasis 00:20:23.58\00:20:25.45 on the doctors here at the NEWSTART program. 00:20:25.75\00:20:28.45 And I know you as a humble man, 00:20:28.60\00:20:30.72 and you don't want to take any credit, 00:20:30.84\00:20:33.00 but he did salute you on this occasion. 00:20:33.18\00:20:37.09 He's so happy to have met you 00:20:37.39\00:20:40.81 and the NEWSTART program, 00:20:40.82\00:20:42.54 and all assistants and the love that he received here. 00:20:43.09\00:20:45.84 We have those eight natural doctors, 00:20:46.03\00:20:48.33 and you know how powerful they are, 00:20:48.34\00:20:50.33 because they did it to you, 00:20:50.34\00:20:51.63 for you, and with you! 00:20:51.64\00:20:53.66 So there you go. It's tremendous. 00:20:53.84\00:20:56.42 Well, I couldn't agree more. 00:20:56.87\00:20:59.30 To me, the doctors here are wonderful. 00:20:59.54\00:21:03.87 And especially you. 00:21:04.33\00:21:06.06 You're not only my doctor now; you're my friend. 00:21:06.15\00:21:09.33 Well I'm excited for him. 00:21:09.36\00:21:10.39 Yeah, I'm excited for you and him! 00:21:10.69\00:21:13.45 And I'm excited for the viewers, 00:21:13.69\00:21:15.51 because I know some of you have just given up hope. 00:21:15.52\00:21:18.75 Don't give up. 00:21:18.87\00:21:20.00 Don't give up! 00:21:20.12\00:21:21.18 Give us a call. 00:21:21.33\00:21:22.39 And don't go away, by the way. 00:21:22.63\00:21:24.00 We'll be right back with a message. 00:21:24.01\00:21:26.36 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:40.33\00:21:41.75 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh. 00:21:41.76\00:21:43.12 We're glad you're with us today. 00:21:43.13\00:21:44.36 and I'm glad that Rich Kollenberg is 00:21:44.48\00:21:46.12 in the studio with us. Welcome Rich. 00:21:46.13\00:21:47.39 Hi Don. 00:21:47.57\00:21:48.57 Now you're here... What are you here to talk about? 00:21:48.58\00:21:50.60 I'm here to talk about addictions. 00:21:50.78\00:21:52.24 And you have some experience. 00:21:52.36\00:21:54.03 I have a little experience. 00:21:54.15\00:21:56.06 I was an addict for about 25 years of my life. 00:21:56.07\00:21:59.69 I used and abused just about every kind of 00:21:59.78\00:22:01.75 drug or substance that there was. 00:22:02.06\00:22:03.81 Okay. Well, all things work together for good. 00:22:03.82\00:22:07.21 In other words, the Lord can use that. 00:22:07.24\00:22:08.36 I'm glad you're willing to come and talk about it. 00:22:08.37\00:22:10.09 And I'm glad you're still alive, 00:22:10.18\00:22:11.57 because a lot of people that get into addictions, 00:22:11.69\00:22:13.63 they don't make it. 00:22:13.66\00:22:14.72 So I'm glad you're here. 00:22:15.09\00:22:16.24 What is an addiction? 00:22:16.25\00:22:17.69 An addiction is a habit 00:22:17.81\00:22:20.87 that controls you. 00:22:21.09\00:22:22.42 That you don't control, but it controls you. 00:22:22.45\00:22:25.00 When we were talking, you said there's two types of addictions. 00:22:25.39\00:22:28.60 Yeah, there's two different types. 00:22:29.15\00:22:30.15 There's substance addiction, which would be 00:22:30.18\00:22:32.60 drugs, alcohol, coffee, cigarettes. 00:22:33.03\00:22:37.03 And then there's behavioral addictions. 00:22:37.18\00:22:38.78 And behavioral addictions would fall... 00:22:38.79\00:22:40.81 You would have jealousy, 00:22:40.82\00:22:42.12 anger, sexual addictions, gambling, and whatnot. 00:22:42.45\00:22:46.24 Critical type spirit, gossiping, and all those other things. 00:22:46.63\00:22:50.51 Yes, all those type of things are behavioral addictions. 00:22:50.52\00:22:52.33 So, behavioral addictions and substance addictions. 00:22:52.63\00:22:56.69 And you struggled with both of those. 00:22:56.70\00:22:57.72 Very much so. 00:22:57.84\00:22:59.30 They probably go together a little bit. 00:22:59.31\00:23:00.30 They go hand in hand. 00:23:00.31\00:23:01.30 And so, how does that happen? 00:23:01.42\00:23:03.03 A habit to me, as I would think, sounds like a good thing. 00:23:03.06\00:23:06.33 Yeah, habits are our friends, 00:23:06.78\00:23:08.24 but when they turn bad they become addictions. 00:23:08.27\00:23:10.78 What we end up doing is we end up 00:23:11.12\00:23:13.36 following and wanting pleasure 00:23:13.37\00:23:15.72 more than thinking long-term. 00:23:15.87\00:23:17.51 And when we desire that pleasure, 00:23:17.63\00:23:19.45 that can turn into an addiction, 00:23:19.66\00:23:22.42 and we don't think long-term anymore. 00:23:22.60\00:23:24.75 We end up giving ourselves over 00:23:25.27\00:23:27.21 to that pleasure, whatever it may be. 00:23:27.22\00:23:29.45 Whatever satisfaction we get out of gossip, 00:23:29.51\00:23:31.81 whatever satisfaction we get out of a drug, 00:23:32.09\00:23:34.33 or whatever, we give ourselves over to that. 00:23:34.57\00:23:36.60 In fact, the Bible speaks of that 00:23:36.72\00:23:38.63 exact same phrase when it talks about 00:23:38.64\00:23:40.66 the behavioral addictions of Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:23:40.75\00:23:43.36 In Jude 1:7 it says, 00:23:43.45\00:23:45.24 "Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, 00:23:45.36\00:23:46.84 and the cities about them in like manner, 00:23:46.85\00:23:49.09 giving themselves over 00:23:49.21\00:23:51.24 to fornication, and going after strange flesh, 00:23:51.25\00:23:53.81 are set forth as an example, 00:23:54.09\00:23:56.30 suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." 00:23:56.31\00:23:58.45 So we can see the Bible actually talks about 00:23:58.54\00:24:00.60 how they in Sodom and Gomorrah 00:24:00.75\00:24:02.36 gave themselves over to this bad behavior. 00:24:02.37\00:24:05.12 Is it a one-way street? 00:24:05.36\00:24:06.57 So you give yourself over, that's it? 00:24:06.58\00:24:08.51 That's not it. Praise the Lord for that. 00:24:08.72\00:24:11.45 I can remember back... 00:24:11.72\00:24:13.54 I think I'd used about everybody up on the planet. 00:24:13.66\00:24:16.15 I was all alone. 00:24:16.27\00:24:17.39 It was back in 1986, and I was all done. 00:24:17.40\00:24:21.51 My girlfriend wouldn't even see me anymore. 00:24:21.66\00:24:24.45 And I can remember lying facedown 00:24:24.54\00:24:26.78 on my bed, crying out to God, 00:24:27.03\00:24:29.06 "God, help me." 00:24:29.07\00:24:30.12 And He said, "Fourty-one years, your way hasn't worked." 00:24:30.13\00:24:33.54 And so He said, "It's time to try it My way." 00:24:33.63\00:24:36.51 And so I cried out to Him, and He said that 00:24:36.69\00:24:41.78 this is going to work. 00:24:42.00\00:24:43.00 And I didn't know how it was going to work. 00:24:43.01\00:24:44.48 So it was like a 3-word prayer, huh? 00:24:44.60\00:24:46.18 Yeah. God helped me. 00:24:46.33\00:24:47.39 For three months I prayed that 3-word prayer. 00:24:47.57\00:24:49.78 God helped me, and He answered that prayer. 00:24:50.21\00:24:52.30 So that was really your way of giving yourself 00:24:52.54\00:24:55.18 over to something else? 00:24:55.45\00:24:56.48 Exactly. We can't muster up enough 00:24:56.49\00:24:58.75 ego motivation to make it work. 00:24:58.76\00:25:01.36 We have to give ourselves over to something or Someone else. 00:25:01.51\00:25:04.78 I like your little book that you've written here, 00:25:04.87\00:25:07.15 "Clean 7 Steps to Freedom: What Every Addict Needs." 00:25:07.24\00:25:11.69 It's got a picture there of the ladder going up. 00:25:11.84\00:25:14.87 Out of the way you are, 00:25:15.15\00:25:16.21 you gave yourself over to something, 00:25:16.22\00:25:17.72 kind of like the prodigal son. 00:25:18.00\00:25:19.51 "This is what I want, 00:25:19.63\00:25:21.45 I want my inheritance, I want this, I want that." 00:25:21.54\00:25:24.15 And then he changed. 00:25:24.54\00:25:26.03 He says, "Make me one of your servants." 00:25:26.04\00:25:27.57 You kind of had that moment. 00:25:27.60\00:25:28.66 That's right, that's right. 00:25:28.67\00:25:30.78 And it worked out. God put it in my heart 00:25:31.06\00:25:33.75 that I was going to turn 180 degrees. 00:25:33.84\00:25:36.09 And I didn't know. That was my nickname for a while. 00:25:36.10\00:25:38.18 My family called me 180 for a while, 00:25:38.33\00:25:40.63 because everything changes. 00:25:40.75\00:25:42.27 Everything I'd done in my life up to that point was wrong. 00:25:42.39\00:25:45.24 So that's the big first step. 00:25:45.69\00:25:47.39 If you were talking to someone about a first step, 00:25:47.40\00:25:49.75 it's coming to that point 00:25:49.76\00:25:51.00 of saying, "I gave myself over to this, but 00:25:51.36\00:25:54.24 I can give myself over to something else." 00:25:54.48\00:25:56.09 Yeah, acknowledging and admitting 00:25:56.45\00:25:58.54 that you've got a problem. 00:25:58.55\00:26:00.18 Well, I encourage you. 00:26:00.69\00:26:02.36 You've been watching today NEWSTART at Home. 00:26:02.37\00:26:05.30 Get this book.
