Hi Folks, welcome to
another edition of NEWSTART Now,
00:00:23.72\00:00:27.09
you know, we've been
00:00:27.66\00:00:29.27
televising this
program for some time
00:00:29.28\00:00:32.09
and we always have a good story,
00:00:32.75\00:00:34.36
and today we have
a good story, however
00:00:34.81\00:00:38.00
some of these stories don't
turn out just as we would like.
00:00:38.45\00:00:42.18
In our studio
today we have Paul Harp,
00:00:43.09\00:00:46.06
which we'll be
chatting with in a little bit,
00:00:46.60\00:00:49.72
but I'd like you to
see when Paul arrived.
00:00:50.30\00:00:53.48
Five or six years ago,
I came down with cancer.
00:00:54.45\00:00:59.42
And my wife and I
found out about this place,
00:00:59.87\00:01:02.84
and we came down to it.
00:01:03.39\00:01:05.09
And by the time I left here,
00:01:06.45\00:01:08.03
after experiencing their
00:01:08.48\00:01:09.78
lifestyle change and
everything like that,
00:01:09.79\00:01:12.06
that my cancer was in remission.
00:01:12.42\00:01:14.42
So we were quite
happy about that,
00:01:15.39\00:01:17.42
but unfortunately I
got cancer back again,
00:01:17.87\00:01:20.39
in a different location,
00:01:20.40\00:01:21.66
and we are down
here again to see if
00:01:22.06\00:01:24.00
we can get it back
in remission again.
00:01:24.01\00:01:25.84
Well what I want
to do this time is
00:01:26.75\00:01:28.72
make sure that I
stay with the program.
00:01:28.73\00:01:30.81
Once you slide off,
you never seem to get back,
00:01:31.54\00:01:34.45
and it's a healthy
lifestyle, it's good for you.
00:01:35.00\00:01:40.00
If I could just. . .
00:01:41.63\00:01:43.24
well what I'm facing
right now is my life,
00:01:43.72\00:01:46.60
and if I don't
stick with the program,
00:01:46.78\00:01:49.03
I've probably got only about a
00:01:49.69\00:01:51.06
year and a half
to two years left.
00:01:51.07\00:01:52.45
And I think this
program will do it for me,
00:01:54.24\00:01:56.54
will give me an extension
of life to some extent.
00:01:56.55\00:01:59.21
Welcome back folks, and in
our studio we have Paul Harp
00:02:01.00\00:02:05.06
How are you Paul?
00:02:05.27\00:02:06.27
- Hi, thank you,
good to see you again.
00:02:06.30\00:02:07.84
Good to see you, and,
00:02:08.12\00:02:09.72
you know as I said to our
viewers a moment ago, sometimes
00:02:10.42\00:02:14.18
we have success stories,
00:02:14.60\00:02:16.39
which you had when
you first arrived here,
00:02:16.40\00:02:19.33
at the NEWSTART program.
00:02:19.78\00:02:21.75
But I want people
to really understand
00:02:22.36\00:02:25.12
what this program is all about.
00:02:25.13\00:02:27.21
When you first came
here, you had great results,
00:02:27.69\00:02:30.81
cancer went into remission,
00:02:31.39\00:02:33.30
Is that correct? Correct.
00:02:33.48\00:02:34.51
And then you said in our first
00:02:34.72\00:02:36.69
interview that you
slipped off the program,
00:02:36.70\00:02:39.48
and that happened gradually.
00:02:40.24\00:02:42.21
Would you tell us how
that happened, how you
00:02:42.45\00:02:45.12
just all of a sudden
decided that you weren't
00:02:45.42\00:02:47.72
going to stay on that program?
00:02:47.73\00:02:49.24
I guess it's like eating a
candy bar and ice cream cone,
00:02:51.87\00:02:55.18
you just, well I'm
going to have a nibble,
00:02:55.63\00:02:57.00
you know, a nibble
is not going to hurt me.
00:02:57.45\00:02:58.66
And then pretty soon you
know the whole thing is gone,
00:02:59.36\00:03:01.63
and then you go for
another one, and another one
00:03:01.64\00:03:03.66
It's kind of like backsliding
00:03:04.15\00:03:06.24
and this is what happened to me.
00:03:06.69\00:03:08.15
I blame it on myself,
00:03:10.84\00:03:12.75
for not really
staying with the program,
00:03:13.30\00:03:15.15
because I really
believe in the program
00:03:15.60\00:03:17.39
you know, that it does good,
00:03:17.51\00:03:18.63
and it will help an
awful lot of people,
00:03:18.64\00:03:20.21
has helped an
awful lot of people.
00:03:20.42\00:03:21.78
Now, what I want you to walk
00:03:22.27\00:03:24.45
away with
tomorrow when you leave,
00:03:24.46\00:03:27.06
is that there is still
hope, there is that hope,
00:03:27.66\00:03:31.24
that this can go into remission,
00:03:31.57\00:03:34.03
your going to have to
hit it maybe a little longer,
00:03:34.04\00:03:36.60
than you did the first time,
but let's address this slippage.
00:03:37.00\00:03:40.48
What I know from my
experience, as you know
00:03:42.39\00:03:45.15
I've been through the
program myself 4 years ago
00:03:45.16\00:03:48.15
is that if you take
a little bit of sugar,
00:03:48.63\00:03:51.33
those sugar cells open up
00:03:51.78\00:03:54.39
and they say I'm hungry
00:03:54.84\00:03:56.72
I want more
sugar, I want a candy bar
00:03:57.21\00:03:59.39
or whatever it is, right? - Yes.
00:03:59.84\00:04:01.78
As well as fat.
00:04:02.15\00:04:04.03
You take that
little fat, and say,
00:04:04.75\00:04:06.36
Well I think
I'll slip a little bit
00:04:06.37\00:04:07.87
have a little. . . maybe on my
salad I'll have a some dressing
00:04:08.42\00:04:11.81
and that fat gets in there,
00:04:12.21\00:04:13.54
and all of a
sudden you have a little
00:04:13.55\00:04:15.39
garlic bread with butter,
and the fat gets in your system
00:04:15.63\00:04:19.03
those fat cells now open up
00:04:19.18\00:04:21.60
and they want to be fed.
00:04:22.15\00:04:23.57
So my advice for
everyone who's watching,
00:04:24.36\00:04:28.36
if you've changed your
00:04:29.63\00:04:31.87
diet, your
living a new lifestyle,
00:04:32.42\00:04:34.42
if you've come through
00:04:34.43\00:04:35.63
NEWSTART, or many other
programs throughout the country
00:04:36.12\00:04:39.66
perhaps in a different country,
00:04:40.06\00:04:41.54
stick to that program,
00:04:41.81\00:04:43.45
stick to that
lifestyle, because if you slip
00:04:43.72\00:04:47.00
you will open up thos cells,
00:04:47.45\00:04:49.06
you will create a
desire for more of the same.
00:04:49.36\00:04:53.06
So that being said,
00:04:54.15\00:04:55.72
you know, before the
interview started, I recommended
00:04:56.69\00:04:59.57
some ideas that
will increase that hope
00:05:00.06\00:05:04.27
because
00:05:05.00\00:05:06.03
perhaps you need
a little guidance
00:05:07.78\00:05:09.81
at this point,
and I know Dr Lukins
00:05:09.82\00:05:11.87
that's your doctor right? - Yes.
00:05:12.18\00:05:13.54
Dr. Lukens will be
with us in a little while
00:05:13.78\00:05:16.36
but he's going to be
doing some followup with you,
00:05:16.84\00:05:21.00
and giving some advice, etc.
00:05:21.39\00:05:23.03
But tell us, tell
the viewers if you would,
00:05:23.15\00:05:25.54
what are you going to do now?
00:05:25.55\00:05:27.18
Well, Dr. Lukens has already
00:05:28.51\00:05:30.84
told me to go
back and make contact
00:05:30.85\00:05:33.69
with my doctors back where I
live back in Washington State,
00:05:34.24\00:05:37.57
and continue
with the program that
00:05:38.24\00:05:40.60
they had me on
before I came down here,
00:05:40.61\00:05:43.27
but Dr. Lukens is also
00:05:43.69\00:05:45.39
investigating other
avenues of treatment
00:05:45.40\00:05:48.33
That one of his relatives
00:05:49.24\00:05:51.72
that is in the cancer field
00:05:52.24\00:05:54.30
and he will be working with the
00:05:54.78\00:05:56.36
doctors up there
as well as myself.
00:05:56.37\00:05:58.06
I think that is great, you know,
00:06:00.12\00:06:02.30
we got new ideas
coming in from other areas
00:06:02.31\00:06:05.15
other than that one town
I come from in Washington.
00:06:06.30\00:06:09.24
Now we did talk about a book,
00:06:10.03\00:06:12.69
The China Study.
00:06:13.60\00:06:15.06
And I've advised you to go ahead
00:06:15.39\00:06:17.39
and purchase that book
we have it at our store.
00:06:18.09\00:06:20.33
And as I recall
the China Study gave me
00:06:20.78\00:06:23.69
a lot of hope about various
things that I was dealing with
00:06:24.09\00:06:27.24
and they have
00:06:27.69\00:06:28.69
quite a bit of information,
00:06:29.24\00:06:31.24
the latest, the
greatest research
00:06:31.25\00:06:33.57
than has been
done in a long time.
00:06:34.00\00:06:36.39
And in there, as I recall,
there's a bit of information
00:06:37.00\00:06:41.09
about cancers and how
to stop that cancer growth.
00:06:41.45\00:06:45.60
So I hope that you get that.
00:06:46.09\00:06:48.60
I will, I definitely will.
00:06:48.87\00:06:50.78
You know, you
think when you were
00:06:51.45\00:06:53.75
younger that 69
was old, when your 69
00:06:53.76\00:06:56.36
you think 79 is old!
00:06:56.54\00:06:58.15
And you know, you keep
prolonging what you have.
00:06:58.39\00:07:02.72
Our children are grown,
they have lives of their own.
00:07:04.57\00:07:07.06
Just me and my wife,
and we're enjoying life,
00:07:07.15\00:07:09.69
you know, as a
single couple again.
00:07:09.84\00:07:12.24
And your are building a
home in Woodby Island. . .
00:07:12.39\00:07:14.60
Yes, it's in the process
right now of being built,
00:07:14.75\00:07:17.57
And yes, we have a lot
of things to look forward to
00:07:18.12\00:07:20.42
that I would like to
yet see come to fruition.
00:07:22.06\00:07:24.27
My wife doesn't want me to
go this soon I don't think,
00:07:24.48\00:07:27.60
But no, yes life
still looks good, it does,
00:07:29.21\00:07:31.87
it really looks good.
00:07:31.88\00:07:33.24
Good you got a good
attitude, I mean for an old man
00:07:33.51\00:07:36.36
your 69 right?
00:07:36.57\00:07:38.60
Yes, yes, if I
was as old as you,
00:07:38.69\00:07:39.84
I don't know if I'd
be that good or not.
00:07:39.85\00:07:41.27
I'm going to be 69
in five month, so. . .
00:07:41.45\00:07:43.69
Oh I thought you said
you were 69 five months ago!
00:07:44.00\00:07:45.81
Next March.
00:07:46.42\00:07:47.54
Oh next March, you
young whippersnapper!
00:07:47.66\00:07:50.48
We can joke about that.
00:07:52.33\00:07:54.27
Well you know my prayer is that
00:07:54.72\00:07:57.39
the Lord bless
you with the wisdom
00:07:58.18\00:08:00.66
to make the choices
that are going to be
00:08:01.18\00:08:03.15
necessary for you
in the next few years.
00:08:03.24\00:08:06.03
I still see you
know you're vibrant,
00:08:06.63\00:08:08.87
your energy is high
00:08:08.88\00:08:10.12
I see more energy in
you than when we first met.
00:08:10.42\00:08:13.84
You know, I feel a lot
better than when we first met.
00:08:14.06\00:08:16.54
You know, let's talk
about that just briefly,
00:08:16.66\00:08:18.75
because we don't
have a lot of time but,
00:08:18.76\00:08:20.57
I know you came here, and your
00:08:20.81\00:08:22.57
energy was a
little bit down per say
00:08:22.69\00:08:25.15
maybe your attitude
wasn't quite as good
00:08:25.54\00:08:27.72
suffering from some depression.
00:08:28.24\00:08:30.45
Do you have any
other ailments that
00:08:30.81\00:08:33.60
you have been
dealing with as well?
00:08:34.75\00:08:36.48
Ailments no, actually I've been
00:08:37.48\00:08:39.51
fairly healthy my whole life.
00:08:40.39\00:08:42.30
But I have,
00:08:42.87\00:08:43.87
I'm a sugar nut.
00:08:44.78\00:08:46.21
I love ice
cream, I love ice cream.
00:08:47.12\00:08:49.60
And when I was starting
to get sick this last time,
00:08:50.66\00:08:53.09
my lunch would be a
half a gallon of ice cream,
00:08:54.24\00:08:56.48
my supper would be another
half gallon of ice cream.
00:08:56.72\00:08:58.75
Food? I had no
taste for food whatsoever,
00:08:59.51\00:09:01.87
you know, wholesome food.
00:09:01.88\00:09:03.36
It had to be
cookies, sweets, ice cream,
00:09:03.63\00:09:05.87
and that's what I
subsided on for about 4 months.
00:09:06.30\00:09:09.12
And do you think there is a
direct correlation with the,
00:09:09.57\00:09:13.78
cancer that came back,
and the sugar that you ate?
00:09:15.39\00:09:18.39
From what I
learned here, yes, yes.
00:09:19.03\00:09:21.78
I knew the answer to that,
00:09:22.69\00:09:24.30
I wanted to see what
you would say, because
00:09:24.31\00:09:26.78
you know, our viewers
need to hear these things
00:09:27.18\00:09:29.60
every week we come on
here, three times a week,
00:09:29.81\00:09:32.63
and we say, This is great,
00:09:33.06\00:09:34.42
That's great, and all
these wonderful stories.
00:09:34.43\00:09:36.78
Once in a while
we'll have a story,
00:09:37.60\00:09:39.27
and by the way, this is the
first one I've heard in a while,
00:09:39.28\00:09:42.03
but that being said,
00:09:42.75\00:09:44.51
I'll keep in my prayers,
00:09:46.06\00:09:47.27
I know your going to do good.
00:09:47.72\00:09:49.12
We're going to try.
00:09:49.30\00:09:50.36
And thank you for
joining us on the set.
00:09:50.69\00:09:53.36
I'm glad to be here.
00:09:53.42\00:09:54.48
God bless you.
00:09:54.51\00:09:55.51
Thank you.
00:09:55.57\00:09:56.60
Well folks, that's it for today
00:09:56.75\00:09:59.12
again, we don't always
have a positive end result,
00:09:59.57\00:10:04.51
but in someway
there's a message to
00:10:05.09\00:10:07.36
one of you that
may learn something.
00:10:07.37\00:10:09.63
Don't go away,
we'll be right back.
00:10:09.87\00:10:11.69
Well, you've done very well.
00:10:13.18\00:10:14.81
Do you have diabetes,
00:10:21.24\00:10:22.51
heart disease,
high blood pressure,
00:10:22.52\00:10:24.60
or do you weigh too much?
00:10:25.15\00:10:26.45
Hi, my name is Dr. Ing,
and I'd like to tell you
00:10:27.33\00:10:30.12
about our 18 day
NEWSTART lifestyle program.
00:10:30.13\00:10:33.09
It includes a
comprehensive medical
00:10:33.72\00:10:35.81
evaluation with
laboratories and a
00:10:35.82\00:10:37.78
exercise stress test,
00:10:38.21\00:10:39.75
physician consultations
00:10:40.30\00:10:42.03
culinary school
00:10:42.66\00:10:43.84
and an opportunity
to walk on beautiful
00:10:44.39\00:10:46.69
foot trails in the
foothills of the Sierras.
00:10:46.70\00:10:49.33
Your health is one of the most
00:10:51.39\00:10:52.81
important things
that you have, don't wait
00:10:52.82\00:10:54.84
Give us a call at
00:10:55.39\00:10:57.12
Or visit our website at
00:11:00.18\00:11:01.42
Welcome back friends,
00:11:19.03\00:11:20.33
as I promised
we're going to have
00:11:20.78\00:11:23.03
Dr. Lukens here
in just one moment,
00:11:23.04\00:11:25.21
but I want to
emphasize, you know sometimes
00:11:25.69\00:11:28.57
we have people
through the program,
00:11:28.87\00:11:31.06
and this is one
of those times where
00:11:31.07\00:11:33.15
maybe you can be
inspired by his testimony,
00:11:33.57\00:11:37.36
perhaps that
will help many of you.
00:11:37.84\00:11:39.66
So God bless you, and let's
procede with meeting Dr. Lukens,
00:11:40.45\00:11:45.03
How are you Doc?
00:11:45.18\00:11:46.21
Thank you, thank you, very much.
00:11:46.30\00:11:47.51
As I always say, it's a
pleasure to have you here.
00:11:48.06\00:11:50.45
You know Doctor, I have to say
00:11:50.69\00:11:54.09
during this interview I was
humbled quite a bit because,
00:11:55.69\00:11:59.00
so many times we see people
come here and they get well.
00:11:59.21\00:12:02.12
And again I'm
one of those people.
00:12:02.84\00:12:05.66
But when I see
someone who is struggling,
00:12:06.30\00:12:09.12
that is hurting deeply,
00:12:10.21\00:12:12.78
my heart goes out to
them, and what do we do Doc?
00:12:13.39\00:12:16.45
Tell us what we do.
00:12:17.21\00:12:18.39
Well, as always, point
them to the Great Physician.
00:12:19.27\00:12:23.06
because so often when
we mess up, or when we
00:12:24.33\00:12:29.24
fall back, when we
do something, slide back
00:12:29.57\00:12:32.75
as we say sometimes.
00:12:33.18\00:12:34.30
And that. . .
00:12:35.18\00:12:36.36
it just kind of
takes the edge off of life.
00:12:36.51\00:12:40.18
And we think that we are going
to be able to do it ourselves,
00:12:41.78\00:12:45.66
and we go through with
great expectations, but
00:12:46.57\00:12:49.48
Christ the Divine Physician,
00:12:50.69\00:12:53.48
He knows that we are weak.
00:12:54.57\00:12:56.12
We just have to keep
00:12:56.78\00:12:58.39
reassuring them
that He knew that,
00:12:58.40\00:13:00.87
He knew more about them
than they knew about themselves,
00:13:01.42\00:13:04.27
and He's still
there, and He's still
00:13:04.72\00:13:07.18
helping them with
whatever is going on.
00:13:07.19\00:13:09.66
And this isn't
an uncommon problem.
00:13:10.21\00:13:12.69
Yes, it's one that
I've dealt with in the past,
00:13:13.63\00:13:16.69
but the first one that
we are showing our viewers.
00:13:16.87\00:13:20.33
And you know, I never feel
00:13:21.18\00:13:23.33
good about
these, but I do realize
00:13:23.34\00:13:26.09
that someone's being
blessed by watching this,
00:13:26.54\00:13:31.51
the ones who have slid.
00:13:32.06\00:13:33.51
Now before the interview,
we chatted, Paul and I,
00:13:34.06\00:13:37.78
And he said, for four
months I lived on ice cream,
00:13:38.33\00:13:41.69
cookies, cake, and candies.
00:13:42.27\00:13:45.09
And I said, Is
that what attributed
00:13:45.51\00:13:47.84
to the sliding, the
recurrence of the cancer?
00:13:48.39\00:13:51.54
He believes so, could you
elaborate a little on that?
00:13:51.87\00:13:55.24
Well you know,
00:13:56.00\00:13:57.45
I'm working with some people
00:13:58.30\00:14:00.15
that I'm
playing basketball with,
00:14:00.16\00:14:02.24
and one guy has cancer.
00:14:03.03\00:14:06.69
And I talked. . . there's
a physician there as well,
00:14:07.15\00:14:11.51
he does it all, a
family practice primary care,
00:14:11.87\00:14:15.03
And I ask him, I said, you know,
00:14:15.54\00:14:17.84
Don't you think we should have
00:14:19.63\00:14:21.48
this person on a
really good dietary?
00:14:21.49\00:14:23.63
And he looked at me and said,
00:14:24.18\00:14:25.42
Do you think that diet really
makes a difference in cancer?
00:14:26.06\00:14:28.69
I'm thinking, Oh dear!
00:14:30.03\00:14:32.36
And his wife is
into stuff like this too.
00:14:33.21\00:14:37.21
With Paul's situation,
00:14:37.75\00:14:39.33
and with so many people,
00:14:39.66\00:14:41.33
it's just like the smoker,
00:14:42.42\00:14:44.15
he takes a cigarette,
and he takes another one,
00:14:44.87\00:14:47.33
and he's up to two
or three packs a day,
00:14:47.34\00:14:49.06
and nothing
seems to be happening.
00:14:49.84\00:14:51.81
It's the same way
with cancer, you know.
00:14:52.36\00:14:54.27
You say, Well, I
did that, and now
00:14:55.03\00:14:57.27
our mind kind of plays
tricks on us, we rationalize,
00:14:57.72\00:15:00.66
because the appetite
is really really strong.
00:15:01.21\00:15:03.57
Christ had to go
the point of death
00:15:03.87\00:15:05.87
to give us that victory,
we can't do it on our own.
00:15:06.42\00:15:09.66
So anyway it comes up, where
00:15:10.45\00:15:12.81
four months down,
eight months down,
00:15:13.36\00:15:15.48
a year later and so
forth, you just start thinking
00:15:15.63\00:15:18.69
I must be well,
00:15:20.42\00:15:22.48
I just don't think I'll
do this anymore, or whatever,
00:15:23.03\00:15:25.51
and the adversary
just keeps coming in there
00:15:25.81\00:15:27.84
and that's his deal you see.
00:15:28.39\00:15:30.57
So it's just, Oh
it doesn't matter,
00:15:31.12\00:15:33.03
and then when you do
00:15:33.04\00:15:34.09
mess up, and he says, hahaha
00:15:34.54\00:15:37.18
see, and like one book says,
00:15:37.33\00:15:39.84
our promises that
we make to ourselves
00:15:40.39\00:15:42.51
and to others are
like ropes of sand.
00:15:42.52\00:15:44.51
You know,
00:15:46.66\00:15:48.36
I believe that
everything you say is true,
00:15:49.36\00:15:51.54
but I also believe that
00:15:51.55\00:15:52.69
the Lord is
watching those of us.
00:15:53.45\00:15:56.12
And when we slip, I
know when I slip, and I have
00:15:56.72\00:16:00.18
I told you that today,
00:16:00.48\00:16:01.51
on some of these treats
that I like to give myself
00:16:02.21\00:16:05.27
because I say, Well
00:16:05.45\00:16:06.66
yes, I know that
I'm rid of the diabetes
00:16:07.21\00:16:10.21
I have no more
high blood pressure,
00:16:10.54\00:16:12.33
and I'm off all these
different medications,
00:16:12.63\00:16:14.63
maybe an apple
fritter will be fine,
00:16:14.84\00:16:16.84
And you said to
me today, you said
00:16:17.39\00:16:19.39
You mean the one that
is deep fried in grease,
00:16:20.33\00:16:22.87
the one they roll in sugar?
00:16:23.27\00:16:24.78
And I said, yes that's the one!
00:16:25.33\00:16:27.00
And you know, it is so hard
00:16:28.00\00:16:32.51
for a lot of us to
stay away from these things.
00:16:32.75\00:16:35.00
What can we do Doc
to really watch it?
00:16:35.39\00:16:37.33
Well, one of the
things is that it's found that
00:16:37.57\00:16:39.48
if a person does something
like that every three months,
00:16:39.78\00:16:42.54
they look forward to it
00:16:43.09\00:16:44.39
and they do it,
and then they just
00:16:44.81\00:16:46.66
get right back off of it,
00:16:46.67\00:16:48.06
and then go back
on the program again.
00:16:48.33\00:16:50.42
That isn't the problem.
00:16:50.54\00:16:52.48
It's when the person,
00:16:53.21\00:16:54.36
their tempted
and then they do it,
00:16:54.63\00:16:57.15
and like I said
they're doing it on their own.
00:16:57.42\00:17:00.60
And they continue
to do it over and over.
00:17:01.09\00:17:03.57
Well because it
weakens their resolve,
00:17:03.81\00:17:06.18
it weakens their will
00:17:06.19\00:17:07.39
to continue on.
00:17:07.84\00:17:09.18
But I'd like to go
back to the cancer thing,
00:17:09.45\00:17:11.42
When I see somebody
00:17:12.06\00:17:14.21
that's had surgery or
radiation or whatever,
00:17:14.66\00:17:16.87
and maybe it's two years
out, maybe it's five years out,
00:17:17.27\00:17:19.30
and they said now your a cure.
00:17:19.75\00:17:21.36
To me that's a death
nail to a cancer patient.
00:17:21.66\00:17:24.24
You say, What?
Isn't that wonderful news?
00:17:25.00\00:17:27.66
No it isn't,
00:17:27.87\00:17:29.15
because those cancer
cells are still there,
00:17:29.66\00:17:31.72
and the fact that they were
00:17:32.42\00:17:33.87
able to get
cancer to begin with,
00:17:33.88\00:17:35.69
shows that their body,
they have the genetic makeup
00:17:36.21\00:17:39.30
so their body is
susceptible to cancer.
00:17:39.84\00:17:42.15
And so I try to
tell the patients,
00:17:42.60\00:17:44.27
You don't have a lot
of different chances here.
00:17:44.84\00:17:47.66
Now if your
cholesterol goes up and down,
00:17:48.39\00:17:50.45
your sugar goes up and down,
00:17:50.46\00:17:51.75
but when you make a
commitment with cancer
00:17:52.03\00:17:54.51
you have to make a commitment
00:17:54.72\00:17:56.06
like on of my
patients told me he did
00:17:56.07\00:17:57.57
I don't think that he was
even religious, I think he
00:17:59.72\00:18:02.36
or he was even a believer,
00:18:02.81\00:18:05.09
but he said, I promised myself
00:18:05.24\00:18:07.42
that for the rest of
my life, I would never
00:18:08.18\00:18:11.30
allow one
particle of animal product
00:18:11.78\00:18:14.36
to pass my lips again.
00:18:14.84\00:18:16.09
My wife has done that,
she's been vegan for 12 years
00:18:16.36\00:18:18.84
and her health,
she had arthritic
00:18:19.39\00:18:21.18
things and she
didn't even know it
00:18:21.19\00:18:22.87
and the
inflammation in her lungs
00:18:23.36\00:18:24.66
that she would have
to go on antibiotics
00:18:24.67\00:18:26.30
all the time when she
got just a common cold.
00:18:26.78\00:18:29.33
She hasn't had to do
that now, for all these years.
00:18:29.63\00:18:32.21
And so it's
better, like the Lord says
00:18:32.66\00:18:35.24
What I'm doing for you is better
00:18:35.54\00:18:37.03
than you can
possibly even imagine.
00:18:37.04\00:18:38.51
But coming back to this other,
00:18:39.06\00:18:40.36
I've had people that
00:18:41.66\00:18:43.06
10 years out, 12
years out, 25 years out,
00:18:44.03\00:18:47.84
they keep, you
know it's just like
00:18:48.84\00:18:50.30
well it must be over this time,
00:18:50.31\00:18:52.36
and they go back to it,
00:18:52.63\00:18:54.24
and then the
cancer comes back again.
00:18:54.25\00:18:56.63
But of course,
00:18:57.30\00:18:58.51
this is something that a
person has to recommit to.
00:18:59.87\00:19:02.87
Well, what I hear you saying
is that just as in diabetes
00:19:03.15\00:19:07.69
just because the
cancer is in remission
00:19:08.54\00:19:11.12
perhaps your are more
susceptible than others
00:19:12.42\00:19:15.12
for a recurrence if you
slip back into those old habits.
00:19:15.48\00:19:19.12
Well, your cancer patients
00:19:19.30\00:19:21.15
are always susceptible to that,
00:19:21.16\00:19:23.27
so with the cancer patients,
they don't have those time outs
00:19:24.12\00:19:27.78
And I think we talked about one
00:19:28.63\00:19:30.51
of my patients the other
day in one of the interviews.
00:19:30.52\00:19:34.60
And his wife made him
go back on the program,
00:19:34.87\00:19:37.45
he said because their
youngest, when he came here
00:19:38.48\00:19:41.12
to the cancer program,
00:19:41.48\00:19:42.48
their youngest
was two years old,
00:19:42.49\00:19:43.87
and now she's
going on 14, you see,
00:19:44.39\00:19:46.51
And his cancer,
little bits of it,
00:19:47.06\00:19:49.06
here and there, kept recurring
00:19:49.07\00:19:50.69
and he would just
say, Well it didn't work.
00:19:51.30\00:19:53.45
But it was working.
00:19:54.24\00:19:55.30
Those areas of
cancer were still,
00:19:55.66\00:19:57.54
they were just growing
out and doing the thing
00:19:57.55\00:20:00.12
that they were doing on a
00:20:00.63\00:20:01.69
microscopic level
that couldn't be seen.
00:20:01.70\00:20:03.39
And so now, here he
is, he's 11 years out,
00:20:03.84\00:20:06.81
he's still alive, they
found a spot on his lung
00:20:07.09\00:20:09.51
they took it out,
and it wasn't cancer.
00:20:09.75\00:20:11.33
It's, you know,
it's 35 cases of that,
00:20:12.42\00:20:15.72
and he's the only
one that's still alive.
00:20:16.06\00:20:17.63
Doctor, would
you think that when
00:20:18.03\00:20:20.24
people come to
our NEWSTART program
00:20:20.25\00:20:22.33
is it best to have
their spouse with them?
00:20:22.60\00:20:25.15
You know with
the Pritikin program
00:20:26.00\00:20:27.84
the spouse comes for free,
it's more expensive than ours so
00:20:28.24\00:20:31.27
the spouse is really covered.
00:20:31.60\00:20:32.69
You really can't do it without,
I mean you can, but it's almost
00:20:32.87\00:20:35.63
it's almost too hard.
00:20:36.18\00:20:37.18
I can't even imagine coming
here without my wife Cindy,
00:20:37.42\00:20:40.57
and then trying to go
home and explain to her,
00:20:40.84\00:20:43.48
what I learned in 18 days!
00:20:43.66\00:20:45.57
Well, in any case, I
know there are viewers
00:20:46.33\00:20:48.87
out there wondering
if they should come with
00:20:48.88\00:20:51.51
their wife, or their husband
or their significant other.
00:20:52.00\00:20:55.18
That's always,
always best if you can.
00:20:55.36\00:20:57.36
Dr. Lukins, I
want to thank you once
00:20:57.66\00:20:59.63
again for joining
us on the set here,
00:20:59.64\00:21:01.60
The thing is the
Lord is merciful, and Paul
00:21:01.84\00:21:04.36
can still have a
decent rest of his life.
00:21:04.81\00:21:07.75
He was better when he left.
00:21:08.09\00:21:09.30
Yes, indeed,
00:21:09.54\00:21:10.81
And folks, don't go
away, we're running out
00:21:11.36\00:21:13.30
of time, so I'm
going to say goodbye
00:21:13.31\00:21:14.87
for now, but
we'll be right back.
00:21:14.88\00:21:16.36
Hello, and welcome
to Newstart at home,
00:21:30.72\00:21:32.24
I'm your host Don Macintosh,
00:21:32.25\00:21:33.30
we're glad that
you've joined us today.
00:21:33.31\00:21:34.72
And today I'm happy that
00:21:35.21\00:21:36.57
Rich Kollenberg is
here in the studio with us.
00:21:36.58\00:21:39.15
And Rich, welcome.
00:21:39.54\00:21:41.33
Well, thanks,
it's great to be here.
00:21:41.78\00:21:43.00
And we are going to be
talking about addictions today,
00:21:43.06\00:21:45.42
and I guess you have some
experience being an addict.
00:21:45.43\00:21:47.75
I've been an
addict for 25 years,
00:21:48.27\00:21:50.15
I was addicted to many
substances and behaviours.
00:21:50.16\00:21:52.72
Well, I mean I think some
people have said there are
00:21:53.27\00:21:55.39
addicts who
admit it and there are
00:21:55.40\00:21:56.60
those that don't,
would that be true?
00:21:56.61\00:21:57.87
almost every one has
some kind of addiction?
00:21:57.88\00:21:59.45
Yes, and the addict that doesn't
00:21:59.78\00:22:01.60
admit it is
probably still an addict.
00:22:01.61\00:22:03.63
So to not admit it,
what would that be called?
00:22:04.87\00:22:06.81
That would be called a
lie, and you know what?
00:22:07.15\00:22:09.45
Us addicts are trained
professionals at lying.
00:22:10.00\00:22:13.12
What we tell
ourselves is so important.
00:22:13.13\00:22:15.66
And we either tell
ourselves lies or the truth.
00:22:16.12\00:22:19.00
And we're going to
believe what we tell ourselves,
00:22:19.21\00:22:21.75
and you know, we get
lies from all over the place,
00:22:22.30\00:22:26.00
and we don't
even realize, like the
00:22:26.27\00:22:28.03
billboard that
says, drink responsibly.
00:22:28.04\00:22:29.84
Drink responsibly. Yes,
00:22:30.09\00:22:31.33
unless it's water,
it's not responsible.
00:22:31.34\00:22:33.45
Right, and have a
safe holiday season,
00:22:33.66\00:22:36.03
don't drink and drive.
00:22:36.04\00:22:37.30
- So that's kind of half true.
00:22:37.60\00:22:38.63
Half true yes, you can
have a safe holiday season,
00:22:38.69\00:22:41.27
if you drink
but you don't drive.
00:22:41.28\00:22:42.87
So we are bombarded
with lies, but the worst
00:22:44.24\00:22:46.75
thing that an addict
does is he tells himself lies.
00:22:46.76\00:22:49.66
Like what kind of lies?
00:22:50.03\00:22:51.21
I'm not an addict.
00:22:51.66\00:22:52.66
That's a lie.
00:22:53.21\00:22:54.24
One of the worst lies is,
00:22:54.60\00:22:56.33
The good old days
really weren't that bad.
00:22:56.34\00:22:59.12
That's a bad lie,
because then you start
00:22:59.87\00:23:01.75
romancing the good old
days when they were that bad.
00:23:01.76\00:23:04.21
Crawling out
from underneath a car,
00:23:04.36\00:23:06.15
at two in the morning,
00:23:06.16\00:23:07.21
with vomit all over you,
is not the good old days.
00:23:07.48\00:23:11.42
Those types of
things but somehow,
00:23:12.33\00:23:14.60
we tell ourselves those lies,
00:23:14.61\00:23:16.54
or the fact that
I'm not an addict,
00:23:17.36\00:23:19.45
or I'm not an
abuser or I'm not a gossip
00:23:19.46\00:23:21.78
or I'm not a gambler,
00:23:22.09\00:23:23.18
and if an addict
doesn't need help
00:23:23.45\00:23:26.75
you can't help him.
00:23:27.30\00:23:28.30
So do you ever find
yourself having those
00:23:29.33\00:23:31.18
thoughts go through
your mind still today even?
00:23:31.19\00:23:33.21
You know there's still a
tug every once in a while,
00:23:33.33\00:23:35.60
with different
behaviours and stuff, but
00:23:35.84\00:23:39.42
the Lord has lifted the
obsessions for me to use drugs
00:23:40.06\00:23:43.60
and to do those types of
behaviours, He's lifted it.
00:23:44.06\00:23:46.36
But a lot of the behavioural
addictions that I had before
00:23:46.48\00:23:49.54
I'm finding are really
rearing their ugly head,
00:23:49.72\00:23:53.06
after I've quit the substances.
00:23:53.07\00:23:55.15
Ok, so I mean, it's an
ongoing dynamic process.
00:23:55.30\00:23:57.66
So what do you do to reverse
the lies that are in your life?
00:23:57.81\00:24:00.66
You have to get some truth
00:24:00.81\00:24:02.30
from somewhere,
and I can remember
00:24:02.31\00:24:04.15
When I first
got clean and sober,
00:24:04.60\00:24:06.36
my wife and I Susan,
00:24:06.37\00:24:07.39
we said you know what,
00:24:07.40\00:24:08.54
this TV is not
putting out much truth.
00:24:08.55\00:24:10.45
We were ready to turn it off,
00:24:10.69\00:24:12.33
and I was flipping through the
00:24:12.63\00:24:14.39
channels and I
got an Amazing Facts
00:24:14.40\00:24:16.33
television with Pastor
Doug Bachelor on there,
00:24:16.78\00:24:19.81
and it had a ring of truth,
and that really helped me.
00:24:20.75\00:24:23.36
So you were ready to. . .
00:24:23.48\00:24:24.51
I mean you told
me the story before,
00:24:24.84\00:24:26.33
you were sitting in the
00:24:26.34\00:24:27.39
middle of the woods somewhere in
a house that had TV or something
00:24:27.40\00:24:29.66
Yes, we were in what
they called the fort,
00:24:29.81\00:24:32.27
I mean we had snakes
in the house and rats
00:24:32.28\00:24:34.57
and a little bitty
black and white TV.
00:24:34.84\00:24:36.84
And the
electricity still worked.
00:24:37.00\00:24:38.27
The electricity still worked
00:24:38.36\00:24:39.57
because her mom
paid the power bill.
00:24:39.58\00:24:41.18
Ok, and your sitting there,
00:24:41.39\00:24:43.15
and for some reason
you're looking at TV,
00:24:43.16\00:24:45.00
and it's got a
lot of lies on it,
00:24:45.01\00:24:46.03
your saying we got to dump it.
00:24:46.04\00:24:47.06
We got to dump it, and. . .
00:24:47.07\00:24:49.09
and low and behold we cam
across that television program
00:24:50.12\00:24:53.09
And my brain was
pretty fried at the time,
00:24:53.54\00:24:55.48
so I couldn't read very
well, so that was very helpful
00:24:55.49\00:24:57.84
for me to be able
to hear the truth.
00:24:58.09\00:25:00.33
And there was
something about Pastor Bachelor,
00:25:01.30\00:25:03.51
he was a caveman, he
was an addict himself,
00:25:03.52\00:25:05.72
you could identify with him?
00:25:05.84\00:25:07.27
I could identify with him.
00:25:07.39\00:25:08.48
And you started surrounding
your self with some truth.
00:25:08.60\00:25:11.27
So you tell yourself the truth,
00:25:11.33\00:25:12.66
you're surrounding yourself with
00:25:12.67\00:25:13.66
people that are
telling you the truth,
00:25:13.67\00:25:14.78
was Susan telling
you the truth? your wife.
00:25:14.79\00:25:16.39
You know what we finally came to
00:25:16.40\00:25:18.18
agreement that we
had to search for God
00:25:18.19\00:25:20.24
as hard as we
searched for drugs.
00:25:20.81\00:25:22.51
So you started to
tell yourself the truth,
00:25:23.54\00:25:25.36
told each other the
truth, and then you started to
00:25:25.37\00:25:27.45
watch Christian programing. . .
00:25:27.81\00:25:29.84
We bombarded
ourselves with truth.
00:25:30.39\00:25:32.24
Well that's a huge
principle, I think.
00:25:33.39\00:25:36.00
So admitting you wrong,
00:25:36.12\00:25:37.45
admitting you're
telling yourself a lie,
00:25:37.46\00:25:38.69
but then filling it
will truth, don't take
00:25:38.70\00:25:40.33
something away unless you
replace it with something else,
00:25:40.34\00:25:42.42
so lies with truth.
00:25:42.84\00:25:44.75
Oh you have all
this in your book, Clean,
00:25:45.33\00:25:47.18
Seven Steps to Freedom,
what every addict needs,
00:25:47.19\00:25:49.27
That's a great little
book, and it has all kinds
00:25:49.57\00:25:51.75
of steps in there, all
kinds of practical wisdom
00:25:51.76\00:25:54.00
like what you shared today.
00:25:54.30\00:25:56.15
Thanks for being
here, thanks for telling us
00:25:57.30\00:25:58.84
the truth about
telling ourselves the truth.
00:25:58.85\00:26:00.42
Yes, my pleasure to be here,
00:26:01.00\00:26:02.42
And we're glad
that you are here,
