Hi friends, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:23.48\00:00:27.63 I'm your host, Ron Giannoni, and with us in the studio today 00:00:28.18\00:00:31.54 is a good friend of mine, Anthony Acampora. 00:00:32.09\00:00:36.21 Now Anthony, this is his second trip here. 00:00:36.66\00:00:39.06 So we're going to show a clip now 00:00:40.69\00:00:43.33 of when he just arrived the second time. 00:00:43.34\00:00:46.36 I'm here because of excessive weight. 00:00:48.00\00:00:50.75 I'm up to about 323 pounds, 00:00:52.39\00:00:55.06 I would spend 10 to 12 hours a day at the casino, 00:00:55.39\00:00:59.24 and I'd be drinking beer basically the whole time. 00:01:00.27\00:01:02.87 So that's why I put on a lot of the weight. 00:01:03.63\00:01:06.42 Probably about 30 pounds of this is from the drinking. 00:01:06.87\00:01:10.54 I'm looking to lose about 25 to 30 pounds. 00:01:10.60\00:01:13.33 I think I can do that in 18 days. 00:01:13.78\00:01:15.72 I'm starting off walking a lot more 00:01:16.27\00:01:19.03 than I was last time in the beginning. 00:01:19.04\00:01:21.84 I didn't start walking a lot until 00:01:22.24\00:01:23.84 about the third or fourth day last time. 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.75 This time I already started walking. 00:01:26.09\00:01:27.54 I walked a mile and a half yesterday, 00:01:27.55\00:01:29.09 two miles today already. 00:01:29.48\00:01:30.51 So I want to definitely work on the weight. 00:01:30.66\00:01:33.09 I want to get my blood pressure down to normal again. 00:01:33.10\00:01:35.78 Last time I was on blood pressure medication, 00:01:36.24\00:01:38.39 and within 3 days I was off the medication, 00:01:38.81\00:01:39.81 and my blood pressure was normal, 00:01:41.60\00:01:44.03 just in about 3 or 4 days. 00:01:44.48\00:01:45.63 So I want to be able to do that again, 00:01:46.12\00:01:48.54 and also just mentally clear my head, 00:01:50.03\00:01:52.24 be able to focus more, get my concentration back, 00:01:53.42\00:01:57.15 because that's kind of clouded. 00:01:58.00\00:01:59.51 Those are the three main objectives. 00:02:01.48\00:02:04.72 Welcome back friends, and in our studio, 00:02:06.39\00:02:10.12 my friend Anthony Acamporo. 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.51 This is my "goombadah", as we say in Italian. 00:02:12.78\00:02:15.66 This is Anthony's second trip here. 00:02:16.66\00:02:19.00 Perhaps you can tell us, this second time around, 00:02:19.36\00:02:23.66 Why did you come back to NEWSTART? 00:02:24.12\00:02:26.12 Well basically I came back 00:02:26.69\00:02:29.27 because I went off the program. 00:02:29.30\00:02:30.75 I was on it for about a month or so. 00:02:30.84\00:02:32.87 I ended up going off. 00:02:33.18\00:02:34.36 When I left here I was on it about a month. 00:02:34.87\00:02:37.27 I just gained all the weight back, 00:02:38.18\00:02:39.84 plus another 15 or so pounds. 00:02:40.00\00:02:42.51 So I definitely felt the need to come back here. 00:02:43.03\00:02:46.54 I knew this is a place where I could get the weight off 00:02:47.09\00:02:49.60 and get my blood pressure under control. 00:02:49.61\00:02:51.51 So those were the two main factors. 00:02:53.15\00:02:56.36 And why did you choose the NEWSTART program? 00:02:56.69\00:02:59.63 Do you remember back the first time...? 00:02:59.78\00:03:01.69 My brother-in-law told me about it. 00:03:01.84\00:03:03.33 He was really big on this program. 00:03:03.36\00:03:04.81 He heard of someone that came through here that 00:03:05.06\00:03:08.36 actually had cancer, 00:03:08.42\00:03:09.66 and was kind of written off 00:03:09.67\00:03:11.36 and told to just go home and die. 00:03:11.42\00:03:13.81 And she's still alive today. 00:03:14.30\00:03:17.27 That was five years ago. 00:03:17.30\00:03:18.69 And he was extremely impressed. 00:03:19.06\00:03:21.33 He knew that person very well. 00:03:21.39\00:03:24.03 It was a very close friend of his. 00:03:24.21\00:03:25.78 So that's why he was really big on the program. 00:03:26.36\00:03:30.54 Now, let me say to our friends that are watching, 00:03:31.27\00:03:34.48 The first time Anthony was here I had 00:03:34.49\00:03:37.03 asked him to come on the NEWSTART Now program. 00:03:37.09\00:03:40.24 He said, "Oh yeah, I will." 00:03:40.36\00:03:41.54 But the last minute he backed out. 00:03:41.60\00:03:44.42 So this morning he's telling me, 00:03:44.60\00:03:46.18 "I'm not sure I want to do this." 00:03:46.42\00:03:48.03 Right? Yes. 00:03:48.15\00:03:49.24 Are you feeling nervous? A little bit. 00:03:49.25\00:03:51.21 But isn't it better now that we've gotten started? 00:03:51.22\00:03:52.75 Yeah, it's better. - Everything alright? 00:03:52.76\00:03:54.36 Maybe you can move your hands a little bit. 00:03:54.54\00:03:56.66 Sometimes we've got to talk with our hands. 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.00 Anyway, you're doing good. 00:03:59.18\00:04:00.66 Tell us how many pounds you've lost. 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.72 15.8 so far. 00:04:03.09\00:04:04.75 You've lost almost 16 pounds and 00:04:04.87\00:04:06.75 you've been here how many days? 00:04:06.76\00:04:08.51 Eight days. 00:04:09.21\00:04:10.33 So are you going to hit your goal of 25-30 pounds? 00:04:10.60\00:04:14.18 Yes. I should fall right in at about 28 if I keep up this pace. 00:04:14.60\00:04:18.45 Yeah. Now, I see a difference in you. 00:04:18.57\00:04:21.00 We've been talking for about a year on and off. 00:04:21.21\00:04:23.81 We'd text each other. 00:04:24.24\00:04:25.48 But I see a difference from day one. 00:04:25.60\00:04:27.48 What is different? What has 00:04:27.78\00:04:29.54 happened that this time, 00:04:29.69\00:04:31.48 maybe that's different from the last time you were here? 00:04:31.63\00:04:34.60 Well, this time I'm a lot more dedicated. 00:04:35.09\00:04:37.66 Last time there was a group of people 00:04:37.69\00:04:40.75 that weren't as dedicated, 00:04:41.00\00:04:42.39 and I kind of fell into that crowd. 00:04:42.45\00:04:44.27 Those were the people that I was kind of 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.39 hanging out with when I was here, 00:04:46.40\00:04:48.00 and it took me away from the program a little bit. 00:04:48.24\00:04:51.87 This time I'm totally focused. 00:04:52.12\00:04:54.33 I'm going to all the lectures, going to all the meetings, 00:04:54.36\00:04:57.21 and walking, doing a tremendous amount of walking, 00:04:57.51\00:05:03.00 and just really focused on the program. 00:05:03.09\00:05:06.24 Okay. I want to talk a little bit about your gambling, 00:05:06.25\00:05:09.63 because you shared with me, 00:05:09.66\00:05:11.42 and it blew my mind when you told me 00:05:11.51\00:05:14.30 how much you lost that one day. 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.21 Can you tell us this: 00:05:16.24\00:05:17.48 Gambling - is it a habit? Is it a sickness? 00:05:17.60\00:05:21.51 What's up with that? 00:05:21.57\00:05:22.60 It's a compulsion. 00:05:22.63\00:05:23.78 I mean, it's definitely something 00:05:23.79\00:05:28.87 that is hard to get away from. 00:05:29.03\00:05:31.18 It's hard to just walk away. 00:05:31.45\00:05:33.15 It's obviously hard to just walk away when you win. 00:05:33.16\00:05:35.66 If people could do that, 00:05:36.21\00:05:39.06 there'd be a lot of rich people out there. 00:05:39.07\00:05:41.54 Didn't you have almost $200,000 on the table 00:05:42.36\00:05:45.78 at one time? You could have just walked away? 00:05:45.84\00:05:48.24 I had $187,000 that I won, 00:05:48.42\00:05:51.03 and yeah, I didn't walk away. I ended up 00:05:51.48\00:05:54.51 continuing to play, 00:05:54.54\00:05:55.84 well into the night and into the next day, 00:05:56.24\00:05:59.09 and I ended up losing the whole amount. 00:05:59.42\00:06:01.63 And while you were there you were drinking excessively. 00:06:01.87\00:06:04.81 Yeah. It got to the point 00:06:04.82\00:06:07.06 where I was drinking just to play, 00:06:07.12\00:06:08.75 because I would get so anxious when I was playing, 00:06:08.78\00:06:11.00 after losing these big amounts 00:06:11.03\00:06:12.69 and playing for really large amounts. 00:06:12.78\00:06:15.12 I would drink just so I would be calm enough to play. 00:06:15.27\00:06:19.66 So the drinking went hand in hand. 00:06:20.03\00:06:22.21 First it was drinking to.... 00:06:22.33\00:06:25.57 It wasn't really drinking just to be able to play. 00:06:26.12\00:06:30.54 It was more just drinking because I was there 00:06:30.57\00:06:32.69 and wanted the excitement of everything. 00:06:32.78\00:06:34.63 But it got to the point where the drinking was, 00:06:34.84\00:06:38.24 it was excessive. 00:06:38.39\00:06:40.21 Now, you also told me you had been depressed. 00:06:41.18\00:06:44.36 Was this because you had lost $187,000? 00:06:44.60\00:06:48.15 Was it something you had been dealing with a long time? 00:06:48.24\00:06:50.84 Do you notice any change since you've been back? 00:06:51.24\00:06:55.09 Yeah. The depression I got about three years ago, 00:06:55.18\00:06:58.66 really bad depression and anxiety. 00:06:59.09\00:07:04.21 I've been dealing with it for a while now, 00:07:04.57\00:07:07.87 and it definitely got worse with the gambling. 00:07:08.12\00:07:12.69 That did not help at all. 00:07:12.78\00:07:14.84 It does not help your mind at all, 00:07:15.00\00:07:16.66 especially when you start losing these amounts. 00:07:16.81\00:07:20.21 So since I've been here, 00:07:20.33\00:07:23.48 probably about the third or fourth day, 00:07:23.57\00:07:27.00 I noticed a little bit of a break in the depression. 00:07:27.21\00:07:30.42 I'm starting to think a little bit more clearly, 00:07:30.60\00:07:33.12 and I'm more positive and more 00:07:33.30\00:07:35.15 focused on the program here. 00:07:35.30\00:07:38.06 So you feel this time you're more dedicated, 00:07:39.12\00:07:43.06 and it shows in the weight you've lost, 00:07:43.27\00:07:47.27 the miles you're walking, 00:07:47.45\00:07:49.09 and maybe you can tell us 00:07:49.21\00:07:50.72 how many miles a day you're walking now. 00:07:50.78\00:07:52.72 I'm walking about four and a half to five miles a day. 00:07:52.75\00:07:55.36 Do you find that difficult? 00:07:55.51\00:07:56.81 No. You start it off early in the morning 00:07:57.03\00:07:59.42 after the stretchercise, 00:07:59.43\00:08:01.78 and you do a half-mile or a mile then, and it just 00:08:01.81\00:08:04.51 goes from there. Everybody always wants to take a walk, 00:08:04.69\00:08:07.00 so it really goes by pretty quickly. 00:08:07.01\00:08:09.36 Good. And your blood pressure, 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.06 the last time you were here, 00:08:12.07\00:08:13.45 you got off your blood pressure medications. 00:08:13.60\00:08:16.18 How long was it after you started here? 00:08:16.24\00:08:18.72 Three days. 00:08:18.81\00:08:20.27 And you got off all the meds? 00:08:20.69\00:08:22.18 I got off the medication in three days. 00:08:22.21\00:08:24.09 The blood pressure medication I haven't been on since. 00:08:24.10\00:08:27.30 And how's your blood pressure today, Anthony? 00:08:27.51\00:08:29.54 Today was actually, 00:08:29.60\00:08:31.57 when Dr. Ing just took it, it was 114 over 78. 00:08:31.58\00:08:34.63 Wow! I would say that's incredible. 00:08:34.69\00:08:37.12 So, you've been able to control your blood pressure 00:08:37.33\00:08:40.45 by this lifestyle? 00:08:40.69\00:08:42.03 Absolutely. Okay. 00:08:42.21\00:08:44.03 Now, I have to ask you this question. 00:08:44.15\00:08:46.36 You're going to be leaving here in about a week, right? 00:08:46.51\00:08:49.57 What are you going to do 00:08:49.81\00:08:51.45 this time that's going to be different than last time? 00:08:51.63\00:08:54.21 Well, I'm just...you have to stick to the program. 00:08:54.69\00:08:57.78 I mean, the way it's presented in the lectures, 00:08:57.84\00:09:00.51 even last night with Dr. Ing's lecture, 00:09:00.75\00:09:03.45 if you cheat at all you're affecting your 00:09:03.72\00:09:07.36 arteries and things like that. 00:09:07.51\00:09:10.18 So I'm going to just 100 percent stay with the program. 00:09:10.27\00:09:13.69 The walking shouldn't be a problem at all. 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.81 I don't mind the walking. 00:09:15.87\00:09:17.09 But as far as the diet, 00:09:17.10\00:09:18.75 that's gonna be the key, 00:09:18.76\00:09:19.84 and I have to just stick with it. 00:09:19.85\00:09:21.33 So let me tell our friends what Anthony is talking about here. 00:09:21.51\00:09:25.54 The program he refers to is a lifestyle. 00:09:26.21\00:09:30.00 It's no different than the lifestyle 00:09:30.18\00:09:32.12 you're leading today, except maybe it 00:09:32.13\00:09:34.12 might change what you're eating, 00:09:34.54\00:09:36.21 the exercise you may be doing or not doing, 00:09:36.51\00:09:39.51 the water and sunshine and all the 00:09:39.75\00:09:42.21 other things that we teach here at the NEWSTART program. 00:09:42.22\00:09:45.33 So when he says program, 00:09:45.54\00:09:47.42 he's really talking about a lifestyle. 00:09:47.43\00:09:49.33 Wouldn't you agree? 00:09:49.45\00:09:50.48 Yeah. Absolutely. 00:09:50.49\00:09:52.03 So you feel stronger, 00:09:52.21\00:09:53.60 you feel like you really own it now, right? 00:09:53.61\00:09:56.03 Yes. They haven't grown tall enough. 00:12:45.63\00:12:47.78 But Anthony, he was huge 00:12:48.12\00:12:50.36 when he came back. 00:12:50.54\00:12:51.54 He was what, 325 pounds? 00:12:51.60\00:12:54.15 Three hundred and some.... He was over 300 pounds. 00:12:54.33\00:12:57.33 And I think that was more than when he 00:12:57.60\00:12:59.27 came the first time, 00:12:59.28\00:13:01.36 and definitely more than when he left. 00:13:01.37\00:13:02.81 The first time he left I think he lost 10 or 15 pounds. 00:13:03.15\00:13:06.63 But this time he said, 00:13:06.87\00:13:08.48 "I'm serious. I'm going to lose some weight." 00:13:09.00\00:13:11.21 And he was, and he did really well! 00:13:11.33\00:13:13.45 In fact, as we, 00:13:14.24\00:13:16.24 as I monitored him and walked, 00:13:16.27\00:13:18.09 he ended up losing about 25 pounds, 00:13:18.18\00:13:22.51 almost 26 pounds. 00:13:22.52\00:13:24.09 And he was very pleased about that. 00:13:24.24\00:13:25.78 But he worked at that, you know. 00:13:26.06\00:13:28.27 He ate modest amounts of foods, 00:13:28.51\00:13:30.51 he didn't eat his supper, 00:13:30.84\00:13:32.33 he didn't eat the evening meal, 00:13:32.45\00:13:34.45 and he walked very faithfully.j 00:13:34.57\00:13:36.87 Now, you advised me when I came through the program, 00:13:37.30\00:13:39.57 if I wanted to lost weight fast 00:13:39.87\00:13:42.18 and get my blood sugar down, 00:13:42.30\00:13:44.12 to skip the evening meal. 00:13:44.27\00:13:46.09 Can you tell us about that briefly? 00:13:46.18\00:13:47.60 Yeah, that's really important, because 00:13:47.72\00:13:49.84 when you eat in the morning, 00:13:50.15\00:13:52.27 you've been resting. 00:13:52.42\00:13:53.75 Your stomach is rested, 00:13:53.78\00:13:55.18 your gastrointestinal tract is rested, 00:13:55.19\00:13:57.30 and you're hungry. So that's a good time to go eat. 00:13:57.51\00:14:00.24 And then after you eat you get out and you do things. 00:14:00.36\00:14:04.33 But what happens if 00:14:04.54\00:14:06.09 we eat a late evening meal, 00:14:06.27\00:14:07.75 as is the custom here in the United States? 00:14:07.76\00:14:10.18 You know, you have a meal that 00:14:10.30\00:14:11.87 you eat at 6 or 7 or 8 in the evening, 00:14:11.88\00:14:14.60 And after that, how many people are going to go out 00:14:15.06\00:14:18.00 and exercise and walk 3 or 4 miles? 00:14:18.09\00:14:20.06 Not very many. 00:14:20.30\00:14:21.51 So what they do is they 00:14:21.72\00:14:23.12 sit down in their easy chair and they 00:14:23.21\00:14:25.66 turn on the television or the computer, 00:14:25.78\00:14:27.60 and they sit the rest of the evening. 00:14:27.61\00:14:29.63 And all of those calories that they've taken in 00:14:30.03\00:14:32.42 have to be stored. 00:14:32.45\00:14:34.36 Some of them are stored as glycogen, 00:14:34.45\00:14:36.39 which is, when the glucose gets 00:14:36.40\00:14:37.84 into the cell it's stored as glycogen. 00:14:37.85\00:14:39.63 But the rest of them are stored as something called fat. 00:14:40.03\00:14:42.78 And most people... 00:14:43.27\00:14:44.87 A lot of people are concerned 00:14:45.15\00:14:46.30 that they have a little bit too much fat. 00:14:46.31\00:14:48.30 So they don't want to do that. 00:14:48.45\00:14:49.69 So if you're really serious about losing weight, 00:14:49.84\00:14:52.84 since we can't help you grow taller, 00:14:52.85\00:14:54.30 one of the most effective ways is 00:14:54.31\00:14:56.06 regular exercise, 00:14:56.30\00:14:57.75 walking three or four miles every day, 00:14:58.06\00:15:01.09 and eliminating the evening meal. 00:15:01.21\00:15:03.48 And we're even able to do this 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.09 on people who have diabetes. 00:15:05.10\00:15:06.33 We work with them on adjusting their medication. 00:15:06.36\00:15:08.60 And when we do this, 00:15:08.87\00:15:10.36 they don't have problems with low blood sugar, 00:15:10.57\00:15:12.66 and the people do very well, 00:15:12.81\00:15:14.75 and it makes it a lot easier for them to 00:15:15.00\00:15:18.00 change their weight, 00:15:18.21\00:15:19.33 and they're really pleased and happy about that. 00:15:19.36\00:15:21.09 But even the people that do eat... 00:15:21.12\00:15:23.09 Some people tell me, 00:15:23.24\00:15:24.30 "Look, I just can't stop from eating." 00:15:24.33\00:15:26.78 Well I advise them, when they call and ask, 00:15:27.06\00:15:30.09 "Well then, you'd better walk after you eat." 00:15:30.39\00:15:32.51 How much time would you say is necessary 00:15:32.84\00:15:35.63 if I'm going to have a big plate of pasta? 00:15:35.72\00:15:38.57 Well that depends what kind of sauce you put on the pasta. 00:15:39.15\00:15:42.60 If it wasn't alfredo or cheese, 00:15:42.69\00:15:45.54 you wouldn't have to walk as far. 00:15:45.57\00:15:47.57 If you put on a cheese sauce, you're going to have to walk 00:15:47.58\00:15:49.72 a lot further, because 00:15:49.75\00:15:50.81 cheese has a lot of calories, and if 00:15:51.09\00:15:53.15 they sprinkle lots of parmesan on there, 00:15:53.33\00:15:55.54 which we don't advise or recommend because 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.24 cheese actually is really high in fat, 00:15:58.39\00:16:00.51 high in saturated fat, 00:16:00.72\00:16:02.30 and cheese is more deadly and worse for you 00:16:02.36\00:16:04.18 than eating meat, red meat. 00:16:04.33\00:16:06.36 So, an hour after dinner? Is that enough? 00:16:07.27\00:16:10.21 To walk for an hour? 00:16:10.69\00:16:12.00 Yeah, if you walk for an hour 00:16:12.12\00:16:13.39 at 20 minutes per mile, 00:16:13.40\00:16:14.48 you're only going to burn up 300 calories. 00:16:14.49\00:16:16.42 And most people are going to eat 00:16:16.57\00:16:17.66 more than 300 calories in their evening meal. 00:16:17.67\00:16:20.03 Especially in that pasta. Yeah. 00:16:20.27\00:16:21.60 They're going to probably consume 00:16:21.84\00:16:23.42 600, 700, 800 calories. 00:16:23.54\00:16:25.60 and if they had some garlic bread with 00:16:25.66\00:16:28.12 butter, and other things, 00:16:28.57\00:16:30.72 they can easily consume 1,000 calories. 00:16:30.81\00:16:33.21 Well, to walk off 1,000 calories, 00:16:33.45\00:16:36.33 that's going to be 10 miles, 00:16:36.54\00:16:38.45 and if you walk at 3 miles an hour, 00:16:38.46\00:16:40.12 10 miles is going to take you 00:16:40.13\00:16:41.42 3 hours and 20 minutes. 00:16:41.60\00:16:43.12 So I'm better off 00:16:43.18\00:16:44.51 passing on the dinner, right? 00:16:44.63\00:16:46.12 Yeah, it's a lot easier to lose weight 00:16:46.13\00:16:47.51 by just eating a little bit less. 00:16:47.52\00:16:49.18 Now Anthony also had elevated blood sugar. 00:16:49.30\00:16:52.15 Yeah, he had an elevated blood sugar when he came. 00:16:52.39\00:16:55.33 But he wasn't diabetic? 00:16:55.63\00:16:57.36 No, no, he wasn't diabetic. 00:16:57.37\00:16:59.09 Normal blood sugar is 99 or less. 00:17:00.06\00:17:03.81 Diagnosis of diabetes is 126 00:17:04.66\00:17:07.45 milligrams per deciliter or higher. 00:17:07.69\00:17:09.45 Then that confirms diabetes. 00:17:09.46\00:17:11.18 But if you're between 100 and 125, 00:17:11.27\00:17:13.87 the term is "impaired fasting glucose". 00:17:14.30\00:17:16.63 And if you're in that area, and that's where Anthony was, 00:17:16.72\00:17:19.03 then your risk of developing diabetes 00:17:19.27\00:17:21.42 is about 15 times higher 00:17:21.43\00:17:22.75 than that of a person who doesn't, 00:17:22.78\00:17:24.12 who has a normal blood sugar of 99 or less. 00:17:24.39\00:17:26.84 Is that area called prediabetic? 00:17:27.06\00:17:30.15 It's often called prediabetic, that's right. 00:17:30.33\00:17:33.06 And the neat thing is, 00:17:33.30\00:17:34.69 when we repeated his blood test 2 weeks later, 00:17:34.81\00:17:37.78 his blood sugar now was down in the 80s. 00:17:38.03\00:17:40.51 It was perfectly normal, 00:17:40.54\00:17:41.60 and he was very happy about that, and so was I, 00:17:41.61\00:17:43.72 because he had dramatically lowered 00:17:44.18\00:17:47.45 his risk for getting diabetes. 00:17:47.48\00:17:49.36 The other thing that lowered his risk 00:17:49.48\00:17:51.24 was the walking and the weight loss. 00:17:51.25\00:17:53.39 And what about the blood pressure? 00:17:53.48\00:17:55.45 That came down obviously... 00:17:55.46\00:17:56.60 Yeah, his blood pressure came down as well, 00:17:56.63\00:17:59.42 so that was very good. 00:17:59.51\00:18:00.57 Now, I know you can't do anything about the gambling, 00:18:00.75\00:18:04.63 but I know that Anthony was depressed. 00:18:04.69\00:18:07.12 He shared with us. 00:18:07.39\00:18:08.51 Were you able to help him in that area? 00:18:08.78\00:18:10.81 Well, what I try to encourage the people to do is 00:18:12.09\00:18:14.87 if you recognize you've got a problem 00:18:15.00\00:18:16.72 in a certain area of your life, 00:18:17.21\00:18:19.30 take it to God. 00:18:19.31\00:18:20.39 And when you want to take it to God, 00:18:20.72\00:18:22.54 you pray to the Lord, 00:18:22.55\00:18:23.75 and you want to pray positively about what you want to become. 00:18:23.76\00:18:27.39 Don't pray about the problem. 00:18:27.66\00:18:29.57 If I'm impatient, 00:18:29.69\00:18:31.09 and if I have a short temper, 00:18:31.63\00:18:33.27 and I'm rude and unkind and uncourteous, 00:18:33.48\00:18:36.33 don't say, "Dear Lord, I am so 00:18:36.54\00:18:38.12 impatient, so unkind, so discourteous, 00:18:38.13\00:18:40.24 so uncaring." 00:18:40.54\00:18:41.78 Pray positively about what you want to become. 00:18:42.00\00:18:44.42 Say, "Dear Lord, help me to become more 00:18:44.57\00:18:46.18 patient, more loving, more gentle, 00:18:46.19\00:18:48.18 more thoughtful and more considerate." 00:18:48.30\00:18:49.63 Then I'm dwelling upon the positive aspects 00:18:50.51\00:18:52.81 that I want to become like, 00:18:52.82\00:18:54.30 you know, become more like Jesus, 00:18:54.51\00:18:56.00 because that's the way that He was. 00:18:56.01\00:18:57.45 I don't want to dwell upon the negative parts that I have. 00:18:57.63\00:19:00.63 Yes, I have them, and I recognize that. 00:19:00.66\00:19:02.60 But I don't want to dwell upon that. 00:19:02.75\00:19:03.84 I want to dwell upon what I can become with God's help. 00:19:03.85\00:19:06.72 And the awesome thing about God is, 00:19:07.24\00:19:08.87 God never says, 00:19:09.42\00:19:11.54 "This is what you need to become, 00:19:12.12\00:19:13.57 this is what you need to do. 00:19:13.72\00:19:15.09 You're on your own. 00:19:15.30\00:19:16.87 I'm really kind of busy, 00:19:17.12\00:19:18.18 don't bother Me." No, He says, 00:19:18.30\00:19:19.63 "This is what I want you to become. 00:19:19.78\00:19:21.33 And by the way, everything you need 00:19:21.60\00:19:24.27 to help you become what I want you to become, 00:19:24.30\00:19:26.06 I offer you the power and the strength to do it. 00:19:26.33\00:19:28.24 All you've got to do is talk to Me and ask Me for it. 00:19:28.36\00:19:30.72 Ask Me for that help every day." 00:19:30.87\00:19:32.57 Spend some time with God, 00:19:32.66\00:19:34.06 time alone with God every day. 00:19:34.36\00:19:36.33 That's the secret of the power in the Christian life. 00:19:36.66\00:19:39.54 Surrender your life and your will to Him. 00:19:39.78\00:19:42.45 I surrender my life and my will to Him 00:19:42.48\00:19:44.36 every day and say, "Lord, 00:19:44.51\00:19:45.81 my day is starting with You. 00:19:47.36\00:19:48.81 Here's what's going to be before me. 00:19:49.12\00:19:50.81 What do we need to do 00:19:51.03\00:19:52.06 to make it a success, 00:19:52.18\00:19:54.00 that I can give You the honor and glory, 00:19:54.18\00:19:56.18 and help someone else along life's journey?" 00:19:56.19\00:19:58.42 Well, I see this with people who 00:19:59.15\00:20:02.27 I interview. They oftentimes say, 00:20:02.45\00:20:05.03 "You folks up here are so wonderful. 00:20:05.21\00:20:07.45 Everyone prays with us, etc." 00:20:07.57\00:20:09.60 Is this something that we do with every guest? 00:20:09.78\00:20:13.45 We pray with them, and...? 00:20:13.66\00:20:15.15 Can they come for counsel, 00:20:15.33\00:20:17.51 and learn about the Bible and God? 00:20:17.78\00:20:20.24 Absolutely. If they are interested 00:20:20.36\00:20:21.75 in learning about the Bible 00:20:21.76\00:20:22.84 and learning about God, 00:20:23.03\00:20:24.06 we have staff who are very happy 00:20:24.33\00:20:26.78 to study with them. 00:20:27.00\00:20:28.15 Our chaplain, or my wife May - either one. 00:20:28.24\00:20:31.12 In fact, I tell them that at the beginning. 00:20:31.30\00:20:33.00 If you're really not sure about 00:20:33.01\00:20:35.27 the possibility of living for eternity, 00:20:35.87\00:20:38.27 and you haven't really answered that question about 00:20:38.63\00:20:41.21 God's gift of eternal life, 00:20:41.24\00:20:42.63 that's something really important 00:20:42.78\00:20:44.57 you need to find out about. 00:20:44.58\00:20:46.03 And please, talk to Viola our chaplain, 00:20:46.18\00:20:48.39 or talk to my wife May. 00:20:48.40\00:20:49.48 They'll be happy to help you find the answer to that 00:20:50.00\00:20:52.24 very important question, 00:20:52.48\00:20:54.09 the question we should never ignore, 00:20:54.36\00:20:56.09 and all of us need to answer for ourselves. 00:20:56.30\00:20:58.48 Well Doctor Ing, as usual, it's always a 00:20:59.45\00:21:01.81 pleasure to have you here, 00:21:01.87\00:21:03.42 and I thank you for coming 00:21:03.63\00:21:05.03 on set and taking your valuable time. 00:21:05.24\00:21:07.42 It's great to be here. Have a wonderful day. 00:21:07.57\00:21:09.72 Friends, thank you for joining us. 00:21:10.81\00:21:13.27 I know you have family or friends that perhaps 00:21:13.36\00:21:16.45 need to come to the NEWSTART program. 00:21:16.69\00:21:18.78 Pick up the phone and call us at: 00:21:19.09\00:21:21.24 God bless you. 00:21:24.45\00:21:25.54 Don't go away! 00:21:25.63\00:21:27.09 Hello, and welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:41.00\00:21:42.39 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh. 00:21:42.45\00:21:43.69 We're glad that you're joining us today, 00:21:43.75\00:21:45.66 because we have a special guest. 00:21:45.84\00:21:47.45 Actually not really a guest, 00:21:47.54\00:21:49.39 he's around these parts quite a bit, Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:21:49.51\00:21:51.81 Welcome, Doctor Nedley. 00:21:51.82\00:21:53.00 Thank you. It's good to be here. 00:21:53.01\00:21:54.03 You are a physician 00:21:54.12\00:21:56.21 that specializes in internal medicine, 00:21:56.27\00:21:58.51 but a couple years ago you told me that 1 in 3 patients you see 00:21:58.60\00:22:01.63 has emotional or depression-type problems, 00:22:01.84\00:22:05.45 so you're interested now in the field of mental health. 00:22:05.72\00:22:08.24 Yes, actually, the brain is an internal organ, 00:22:08.45\00:22:11.51 so it's still not off limits for an internal medicine doctor. 00:22:11.57\00:22:14.84 And we find out a lot of diseases 00:22:15.27\00:22:17.18 have their origin in the mind. 00:22:17.21\00:22:18.51 Even heart disease, when we know 00:22:18.52\00:22:20.57 what we should do to reverse heart disease, 00:22:20.75\00:22:22.84 and we're not doing it, 00:22:22.85\00:22:24.03 what's the problem? 00:22:24.12\00:22:25.15 I guess in the mind. 00:22:25.24\00:22:26.27 The problem is there in the mind. 00:22:26.30\00:22:27.72 So that's really what has piqued 00:22:27.73\00:22:29.42 my interest in regards to helping 00:22:29.43\00:22:31.63 physical disease by actually helping the mind. 00:22:31.84\00:22:34.42 So, emotional intelligence. 00:22:34.72\00:22:36.39 Our emotions sometimes lead us and guide us, 00:22:36.45\00:22:38.39 but they can mislead us and misguide us. 00:22:38.48\00:22:40.09 You want to talk about that? 00:22:40.24\00:22:41.42 Yeah, that's correct. In fact, studies show 00:22:41.51\00:22:43.48 that your emotional intelligence is what is critically related 00:22:43.57\00:22:47.12 to not only your happiness, 00:22:47.21\00:22:49.15 but your success in life. 00:22:49.16\00:22:50.87 And how intelligent you are in regards to IQ 00:22:51.21\00:22:54.06 has to do with the first job 00:22:54.09\00:22:55.48 that you're going to get out of college. 00:22:55.49\00:22:56.84 That's how important that is. 00:22:57.03\00:22:58.33 But how far you advance in that job 00:22:58.57\00:23:00.39 is not at all related to your IQ. 00:23:00.40\00:23:02.21 It's related to your emotional intelligence. 00:23:02.39\00:23:04.69 And so this is critically important 00:23:04.84\00:23:07.15 to your success, your influence, 00:23:07.16\00:23:09.15 and really your general satisfaction 00:23:09.39\00:23:12.18 and happiness in your relationships. 00:23:12.24\00:23:13.81 So there are common distortions people have 00:23:14.72\00:23:17.24 in their emotions that can lead them astray. 00:23:17.27\00:23:19.09 You're going to go through a couple of those with us. 00:23:19.12\00:23:20.66 Yes, that's right. Actually there are 00:23:21.09\00:23:22.60 ten ways of distorted thinking, 00:23:22.69\00:23:25.03 and if we can learn those ten ways of distorted thinking, 00:23:25.15\00:23:27.63 and correct those ten ways, 00:23:28.39\00:23:29.72 we can significantly improve our emotional intelligence. 00:23:29.73\00:23:32.63 One of them, you said, is "all or nothing thinking". 00:23:32.75\00:23:35.06 Yeah, all or nothing thinking. 00:23:35.12\00:23:37.06 Now, some of the time that's correct, 00:23:37.15\00:23:38.48 but most of the time all or nothing thinking is incorrect. 00:23:38.49\00:23:42.18 An example of this would be 00:23:42.33\00:23:44.45 someone who lost the race for Congress 00:23:44.46\00:23:46.45 and comes into my office and says, 00:23:46.54\00:23:48.09 "Doctor Nedley, I'm a big zero. 00:23:48.10\00:23:49.87 I lost the race for Congress." 00:23:50.09\00:23:51.45 Does that mean he's a big zero? No. 00:23:51.75\00:23:53.63 Because you get a divorce, 00:23:53.64\00:23:54.69 does that mean you're a big zero? 00:23:54.70\00:23:56.09 No. But that's where all or nothing thinking leads to. 00:23:56.42\00:23:58.69 Even in the Bible, 00:23:59.00\00:24:01.09 Esau had this. 00:24:01.24\00:24:03.42 When Jacob asked him 00:24:03.54\00:24:05.51 if he was willing to sell his birthright 00:24:05.54\00:24:07.33 for the bowl of lentils.... 00:24:07.34\00:24:08.36 And he'd been out hunting all day. 00:24:08.45\00:24:09.69 He was starved and he was weak 00:24:09.72\00:24:11.81 at that point. 00:24:12.09\00:24:13.24 But he says, "If don't eat these lentils now, 00:24:13.36\00:24:15.81 I'm going to die." 00:24:15.82\00:24:17.27 All or nothing thinking. 00:24:18.00\00:24:19.33 And he sold his birthright due to all or nothing thinking, 00:24:19.34\00:24:21.72 and did his emotions run out of control 00:24:21.81\00:24:23.75 as a result of that? 00:24:23.76\00:24:24.78 Of course. Absolutely. 00:24:24.81\00:24:26.21 I like lentils, but I don't know if I'd go that far. 00:24:26.36\00:24:29.03 The next one you said was overgeneralization. 00:24:29.15\00:24:32.15 Yeah, overgeneralization. 00:24:32.27\00:24:34.09 An example of that was a good friend of mine in college 00:24:34.10\00:24:37.00 who had his eye on a girl for about six months 00:24:37.06\00:24:39.15 before he mustered up enough courage to ask her out. 00:24:39.16\00:24:41.63 And we thought he had a good likelihood of success. 00:24:42.18\00:24:44.15 He was goodlooking, he was smart, he was engaging. 00:24:44.16\00:24:46.72 But she turned him down. 00:24:47.09\00:24:48.66 And he comes back to the dorm and he says, 00:24:48.78\00:24:50.78 "Neil, I'm destined to be lonely 00:24:50.84\00:24:52.81 and miserable the rest of my life." 00:24:52.82\00:24:54.87 And he had tears in his eyes, 00:24:55.60\00:24:59.06 and he overgeneralized in a couple of ways. 00:24:59.24\00:25:02.27 First I said, "What did she say for him to say that?" 00:25:02.33\00:25:04.78 And it turns out she had told him 00:25:05.00\00:25:06.66 she had another event to go to. 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.30 And I said, "So you conclude this?" 00:25:08.54\00:25:10.12 And he says, "Well I got to thinking, 00:25:10.30\00:25:11.60 if she just thought half as much about me as I think about her, 00:25:11.61\00:25:14.27 she would have canceled that event and gone along with me. 00:25:14.33\00:25:16.42 So I'm destined to be lonely 00:25:16.51\00:25:17.66 and miserable the rest of my life." 00:25:17.67\00:25:19.12 Well he had assumed because she turned him down once 00:25:19.45\00:25:21.30 she was always going to turn him down. 00:25:21.31\00:25:22.75 And he also over- generalized by thinking 00:25:23.15\00:25:25.39 that 100 percent of eligible women 00:25:25.45\00:25:27.42 had identical taste to hers. 00:25:27.43\00:25:28.87 And thus he would be endlessly rejected the rest of his life. 00:25:29.06\00:25:32.39 So this was definitely overgeneralizing. 00:25:32.78\00:25:35.66 Overgeneralizing is really taking the hypothesis 00:25:35.67\00:25:39.33 and actually putting it into a fact, 00:25:39.45\00:25:41.36 rather than a hypothesis, 00:25:41.45\00:25:42.78 or generalizing from too few instances. 00:25:42.87\00:25:45.09 So, in your seminar, 00:25:45.39\00:25:47.15 in helping people with reversing depression 00:25:47.16\00:25:49.51 or getting more emotionally stable, 00:25:49.57\00:25:51.51 you go through these types of things. 00:25:51.52\00:25:53.18 Yes, and actually, it's not just for people with depression. 00:25:53.19\00:25:55.75 We all have tendencies to think distorted thoughts, 00:25:56.21\00:26:00.03 and many times we need to back up 00:26:00.18\00:26:02.51 and say, "How true is that?" 00:26:02.66\00:26:04.57 "Is it really completely true?" 00:26:04.69\00:26:07.27 And often our feelings and emotions are bent out of shape 00:26:07.30\00:26:09.87 over things that aren't really completely true. 00:26:10.09\00:26:12.81 Like Will Rogers says, "It's not what we 00:26:13.24\00:26:15.60 don't know that hurts us so much, 00:26:15.84\00:26:17.48 it's what we know for sure that just ain't so." 00:26:17.63\00:26:19.84 Well thank you so much for joining us, Doctor Nedley. 00:26:22.03\00:26:24.39 Thank you for joining us, as well. 00:26:24.51\00:26:26.15 We encourage you to go to the website, 00:26:26.16\00:26:29.48 and we know that your 00:26:30.12\00:26:31.12 emotional intelligence will increase 00:26:31.13\00:26:32.72 if you look at these principles. 00:26:32.73\00:26:33.87 Thanks for joining us. 00:26:33.88\00:26:35.12 Hi.
