David came here, 00:11:49.70\00:11:51.75 and when he came here he was concerned 00:11:51.76\00:11:54.69 about the way his kidneys were working. 00:11:54.70\00:11:57.60 He had been told by his previous physician 00:11:57.78\00:12:00.54 that he had some impairment of his kidneys 00:12:01.12\00:12:03.66 because of various things that had happened, 00:12:03.67\00:12:06.36 and also his blood pressure was high. 00:12:06.51\00:12:08.87 So we had the privilege of working with him, 00:12:08.88\00:12:12.24 examining him, monitoring him, and see what happened 00:12:12.25\00:12:14.60 and see what happened 00:12:14.61\00:12:15.81 during the time that he was here. 00:12:15.82\00:12:17.66 And it was really true, 00:12:17.81\00:12:20.06 he did have the impaired kidney function 00:12:20.21\00:12:22.81 as confirmed by some of the blood tests that we did, 00:12:23.06\00:12:27.33 his glomerular filtration rate was low, 00:12:27.34\00:12:31.15 his creatinine was high 00:12:31.16\00:12:33.24 his BUN was, you know, it was in the normal range. 00:12:33.25\00:12:37.06 And then when he left, or before he left, 00:12:38.06\00:12:41.06 we had the opportunity to repeat some of his tests 00:12:41.12\00:12:44.09 and see what had happened 00:12:44.10\00:12:45.33 during the time that he was here, 00:12:45.34\00:12:47.06 and it was definitely better. 00:12:47.07\00:12:48.18 Now Doctor, I know that we don't use any supplements, 00:12:48.66\00:12:52.54 but can you tell the viewers, we do this. . . 00:12:52.75\00:12:56.30 how does this happen? 00:12:56.42\00:12:57.81 Well . . . my favorite 00:12:58.69\00:13:01.06 supplement is called food, so. . . 00:13:01.07\00:13:04.06 if you want to call food a supplement, 00:13:04.12\00:13:05.63 then we say we use supplements. 00:13:05.64\00:13:06.84 And we like to say whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:13:07.27\00:13:11.33 And just in case the group that I'm talking to 00:13:12.06\00:13:15.72 aren't really familiar with what that is 00:13:15.73\00:13:17.51 because they'll often say, well that's fine Doc, 00:13:17.52\00:13:19.81 I don't eat meat I just use fish and chicken. 00:13:19.82\00:13:22.81 I said, Oh you like those swimming and flying vegetables! 00:13:23.30\00:13:27.60 Well they really aren't 00:13:27.78\00:13:29.06 vegetables as everyone knows, but . . . 00:13:29.07\00:13:31.06 in some cultures in some areas of the world they say 00:13:31.69\00:13:35.39 they don't consider fish and chicken meat, 00:13:36.27\00:13:38.30 but I said it very definitely is meat. 00:13:38.31\00:13:40.36 And if you have impaired kidney function, 00:13:41.09\00:13:44.60 one of the ways that they work with people with 00:13:45.24\00:13:47.66 impaired kidneys or kidneys that aren't working well 00:13:47.67\00:13:50.39 is put them on a low protein diet, 00:13:50.40\00:13:52.42 and what better way to on a low 00:13:52.57\00:13:53.87 protein diet than to go on a plant based diet 00:13:53.88\00:13:56.36 You have more than adequate protein, 00:13:56.51\00:13:58.60 but you don't have 00:13:58.75\00:13:59.75 the burden that you place upon the 00:13:59.76\00:14:01.72 kidneys if you're eating animal protein. 00:14:01.75\00:14:03.57 You know, the kidneys have to 00:14:04.21\00:14:05.33 work harder to process animal protein 00:14:05.34\00:14:07.39 than they do with the plant protein, so . . . 00:14:08.12\00:14:11.33 As we worked with David, 00:14:12.09\00:14:14.27 sure enough as I charted his 00:14:14.87\00:14:16.42 blood pressure when I first saw him 00:14:16.43\00:14:18.21 his blood pressures gradually came down 00:14:18.22\00:14:20.54 and when we repeated his blood 00:14:20.78\00:14:23.06 tests his kidney function had improved 00:14:23.07\00:14:25.15 because his creatinine was lower 00:14:25.16\00:14:27.51 and also his glomerular filtration rate 00:14:27.52\00:14:31.36 had improved and was higher than was on his initial exam. 00:14:31.37\00:14:34.72 Were those the two main 00:14:35.21\00:14:36.87 difficulties that David came here for? 00:14:36.88\00:14:39.42 Well yes, yes, he had some other problems, but . . . 00:14:39.43\00:14:42.15 the main thing that he was 00:14:42.45\00:14:43.54 concerned about was his kidney function. 00:14:43.55\00:14:47.30 And the blood pressure you said is normalized now? 00:14:48.66\00:14:51.12 Yes, his blood pressure came down as well. 00:14:51.24\00:14:53.42 Initially I think his blood pressure was in the 150s 00:14:53.45\00:14:56.12 and you know, by the time he left 00:14:56.36\00:15:00.39 it was down to 110-120 over 60 or 70 00:15:00.40\00:15:04.60 so his blood pressure was normal. 00:15:04.61\00:15:05.81 Now was that with medication, or without medication? 00:15:06.09\00:15:09.06 He was using some medication as I recall 00:15:09.09\00:15:12.36 we even decreased the amount of medication that he was using, 00:15:12.39\00:15:16.33 and his blood pressure was lower. 00:15:16.45\00:15:18.06 In fact, when he went home I said, 00:15:18.15\00:15:19.66 Continue to monitor your blood pressure, 00:15:19.75\00:15:21.57 check it every day, 00:15:21.58\00:15:22.75 and if your blood pressure stays below a certain level, 00:15:23.12\00:15:26.45 you know, below 130 over 90 00:15:26.46\00:15:28.12 you can cut your blood pressure down even further 00:15:28.18\00:15:31.27 after a few weeks if it stays down, 00:15:31.45\00:15:33.36 just cut it out. 00:15:33.37\00:15:34.42 And you don't need to take any unless your 00:15:34.57\00:15:37.06 blood pressure is consistently over 140 over 90, 00:15:37.07\00:15:39.63 so that is an easy way to follow that, 00:15:40.21\00:15:42.60 you know, they can buy a device where they can check 00:15:42.61\00:15:45.06 their blood pressures regularly, see how things are going. 00:15:45.07\00:15:47.81 And I will be very interested what he finds out the 00:15:48.06\00:15:51.42 next time he takes another blood panel or blood test 00:15:51.43\00:15:54.48 to check on his creatinine and his glomerular filtration rates, 00:15:54.72\00:15:59.06 if he does that anywhere from three to six months from now. 00:15:59.07\00:16:02.27 I would anticipate that with what he's learned 00:16:02.54\00:16:06.69 but more importantly with what he's doing, 00:16:06.78\00:16:08.60 if he continues to follow the principles that he's learned 00:16:08.61\00:16:11.12 that those should be where they 00:16:11.30\00:16:13.33 were when he left, or even better. 00:16:13.34\00:16:15.45 Now what about weight? 00:16:16.09\00:16:17.21 David shared with me, maybe in secret, 00:16:17.22\00:16:19.57 I thought it was during the interview 00:16:19.58\00:16:21.84 that he wanted to lose some weight. 00:16:22.12\00:16:23.87 He wanted to regain some youthful energies 00:16:24.06\00:16:28.12 so he can participate better in life, 00:16:28.18\00:16:31.15 do you see any changes there? 00:16:31.16\00:16:33.39 As I recall he did lose some weight, 00:16:33.63\00:16:35.45 I don't recall exactly how much, 00:16:35.46\00:16:37.06 but most of our guests do lose some weight, 00:16:37.48\00:16:40.09 some lose more than others 00:16:40.10\00:16:41.54 I really don't recall the exact 00:16:41.75\00:16:43.54 number but that can easily be checked. 00:16:43.55\00:16:45.60 Yes. Now the creatin, 00:16:46.57\00:16:47.75 is that what you were talking about? 00:16:47.76\00:16:49.69 Creatinine - Creatinine, how is this gaged? 00:16:49.87\00:16:54.36 Through blood work? 00:16:54.37\00:16:55.45 Through a blood test, you do a blood test, 00:16:55.63\00:16:57.66 and if the creatinine levels are within the normal range, 00:16:57.87\00:17:00.60 then everything is working fine, 00:17:00.61\00:17:02.15 when the kidneys are not working well, 00:17:02.39\00:17:04.66 there's impaired kidney function, 00:17:04.67\00:17:06.63 then the creatinine and often the blood urea nitrogen or BUN 00:17:06.64\00:17:11.12 will be elevated or increased. 00:17:11.13\00:17:13.66 So I thought that once you had a kidney problem, 00:17:14.21\00:17:17.06 and maybe some of our viewers think this way too, 00:17:17.39\00:17:20.30 that that's it, it's all over, it's just a question of time 00:17:20.48\00:17:24.06 before they shut down, is this not true? 00:17:24.07\00:17:26.24 Well, not really. 00:17:26.30\00:17:28.24 In other words, if you pick it up soon enough 00:17:28.39\00:17:30.78 and you are wanting to make 00:17:30.79\00:17:32.21 changes and modify your lifestyle. 00:17:32.22\00:17:33.78 Many times we have been able to help 00:17:34.33\00:17:37.21 people who have been told, you know, 00:17:37.22\00:17:40.06 the way your going now, you are 00:17:40.15\00:17:41.54 going to end up having to go on dialysis, 00:17:41.55\00:17:43.36 because you kidneys, you know, 00:17:43.45\00:17:45.21 they say have chronic, renal disease, 00:17:45.22\00:17:47.27 or chronic kidney disease. 00:17:47.36\00:17:49.06 And with their creatinine levels being high 00:17:49.33\00:17:53.15 that their two choices then are dialysis three times a week, 00:17:53.27\00:18:00.24 or if they are eligible and they are in good enough health 00:18:00.45\00:18:03.60 and they can find a match, 00:18:03.72\00:18:05.24 then the other thing is a kidney transplant. 00:18:05.25\00:18:07.57 But we have worked with 00:18:07.78\00:18:08.87 patients where they've been able to 00:18:08.88\00:18:10.51 change things and do things differently, 00:18:10.52\00:18:12.60 we've been able to stabilize them for several 00:18:12.75\00:18:15.84 years so they can delay having to go on dialysis 00:18:15.85\00:18:19.15 or delay having to have the kidney transplant. 00:18:19.16\00:18:21.33 And that's good, because having to go on dialysis 00:18:21.57\00:18:24.45 you got to make a commitment of going into the dialysis center 00:18:24.46\00:18:28.18 usually about 3 times a week 00:18:28.42\00:18:30.48 and that's going to take between four to six hours 00:18:30.60\00:18:34.27 where you're sitting there, 00:18:34.39\00:18:36.06 and you're connected up to the machine. 00:18:36.07\00:18:38.21 Or if you are eligible for kidney transplant, 00:18:38.36\00:18:41.06 then you can have the kidney transplant, 00:18:41.07\00:18:43.36 and you know they have to find the donor, number one, 00:18:43.57\00:18:46.69 and there has to be a match. 00:18:46.81\00:18:49.51 And then after that you've got to take the medications 00:18:49.78\00:18:53.45 you know, to avoid rejecting the kidney. 00:18:53.46\00:18:56.24 So, you know, if you can live on 00:18:56.48\00:18:59.09 whole plant foods, a healthy lifestyle, 00:18:59.10\00:19:02.21 it's certainly a lot simpler 00:19:02.30\00:19:03.66 than either one of those options, 00:19:03.67\00:19:05.30 but those options can be 00:19:05.42\00:19:06.78 lifesaving if that's all you have left. 00:19:06.79\00:19:09.09 Now I thought there was a direct correlation with diabetes 00:19:09.21\00:19:12.57 and the kidneys, or the lack of 00:19:12.58\00:19:15.30 them working properly, is this correct? 00:19:15.31\00:19:18.54 This is correct. . . 00:19:18.63\00:19:20.54 Did he have diabetes by the way? 00:19:21.12\00:19:22.21 I . . . don't think that he did, 00:19:24.15\00:19:26.57 I would have to review his chart, 00:19:26.58\00:19:29.12 but the thing is, with chronic . . . well no, 00:19:29.21\00:19:32.42 with diabetes, poorly controlled diabetes, 00:19:32.48\00:19:36.66 many of the patients that have diabetes, 00:19:36.75\00:19:39.12 if they don't control their diabetes well 00:19:39.13\00:19:41.39 can end up with chronic renal disease, or even worse, 00:19:41.48\00:19:45.12 end stage renal disease 00:19:45.24\00:19:47.21 they then need to go on dialysis or have a transplant. 00:19:47.30\00:19:50.78 The key is, if a person has diabetes, 00:19:51.06\00:19:53.60 he recognizes that he has diabetes 00:19:53.61\00:19:56.06 he takes responsibility 00:19:56.15\00:19:58.87 and he manages his 00:19:59.06\00:20:00.36 diabetes so that the numbers are not. . . 00:20:00.37\00:20:02.66 his blood sugars are not real high. 00:20:02.67\00:20:05.15 Because the other thing is, 00:20:05.30\00:20:06.75 as an ophthalmologist, I find that many times 00:20:06.76\00:20:09.09 if they have kidney problems, 00:20:09.10\00:20:10.63 they also have problems in the eyes, 00:20:10.72\00:20:12.66 they parallel the changes in the eye, 00:20:12.69\00:20:15.39 from diabetes with the high blood sugars 00:20:15.48\00:20:19.12 produce what we call diabetic retinopathy 00:20:19.18\00:20:21.63 and this is manifested or shown in 00:20:21.72\00:20:24.00 the eye with little small hemorrhages, 00:20:24.01\00:20:26.21 micro-aneurysms, which is distention of the blood vessels 00:20:26.30\00:20:30.24 and also bleeding inside the eye 00:20:30.33\00:20:32.51 and when this happens usually we see in the kidneys 00:20:32.60\00:20:35.87 that their function starts to go down 00:20:36.06\00:20:39.51 this is first manifested or shown in 00:20:39.60\00:20:42.06 tests by the presence of protein in the urine. 00:20:42.07\00:20:45.03 So the changes are parallel, 00:20:45.24\00:20:47.63 if the patient has diabetes, 00:20:47.72\00:20:49.69 they need to see an ophthalmologist, 00:20:49.70\00:20:52.09 and IMD, at least once a year, 00:20:52.18\00:20:54.24 and get a complete eye exam where the pupil is dilated 00:20:54.25\00:20:57.81 so the doctor can look at the back of 00:20:58.00\00:21:00.84 the retina and make sure everything is ok, 00:21:00.85\00:21:04.06 because if it advances to a certain stage 00:21:04.12\00:21:06.27 then the patient needs to have treatment 00:21:06.28\00:21:08.30 and this treatment is usually with 00:21:08.39\00:21:10.63 what we call laser photocoagulation. 00:21:11.06\00:21:13.06 and this can help a person save their 00:21:13.15\00:21:17.33 vision so that they do not go blind. 00:21:17.34\00:21:19.21 And if it's left untreated, diabetes is the 00:21:19.30\00:21:23.09 number one cause of 00:21:23.10\00:21:24.36 blindness here in the United States. 00:21:24.37\00:21:26.27 We just ran out of time, thank you 00:21:26.36\00:21:28.69 Dr. Ing for coming into our studio. 00:21:28.70\00:21:31.06 Folks, don't go away, we'll be right back. 00:21:31.15\00:21:33.69 Hi, and welcome. -No. 00:23:45.85\00:23:47.36 - Actually most people could do it 00:23:47.45\00:23:49.24 if they just do it with tender loving care. 00:23:49.33\00:23:51.42 Oh, ok, so they can just do it at home just real simply. 00:23:51.48\00:23:53.69 Ok, so they don't have to have this nice fancy chair either? And so breathing is important too 00:26:03.72\00:26:05.33 while you are doing this with someone? 00:26:05.34\00:26:06.81 Yes, you ask the person to take a deep breath through out, 00:26:07.06\00:26:10.57 about every 30 seconds to a minute. 00:26:10.58\00:26:12.69 For example, Naomi can you take a deep breath? 00:26:12.78\00:26:15.54 And let out slowly. 00:26:16.81\00:26:18.15 And then, you just manipulate the tissues 00:26:19.48\00:26:22.06 and get more oxygen to the head, neck, 00:26:22.09\00:26:25.12 shoulders, and that tension is released. 00:26:25.13\00:26:28.24 - Do you ever go down for the arms part too a little bit? 00:26:28.36\00:26:30.18 - You could also do the arms, but this is just a chair massage 00:26:30.27\00:26:34.12 for basic tension in the head. 00:26:34.21\00:26:37.09 Ok.
