Hi, folks and welcome to another edition 00:00:23.36\00:00:25.96 of Newstart Now. We have an exciting 00:00:25.97\00:00:28.37 program for you and a very unusual one. 00:00:28.38\00:00:31.07 We have Tom to my left here, 00:00:31.08\00:00:33.98 who will be interviewed here in a second, 00:00:33.99\00:00:36.61 but first I'd like to show you a little bit about 00:00:36.62\00:00:39.47 him when he first arrived. 00:00:39.48\00:00:41.26 So, can we watch that clip now? 00:00:41.27\00:00:43.68 About two months ago, I had a virus attacked 00:00:45.47\00:00:49.84 my heart which weakened my heart. 00:00:49.85\00:00:53.24 I spent eleven days in the hospital and it was 00:00:53.98\00:00:57.42 a very traumatic experience because 00:00:57.43\00:00:59.35 of all the things they did to me 00:00:59.36\00:01:00.99 while I was there. They probably tried 00:01:01.00\00:01:04.59 several different drugs and which I had 00:01:04.60\00:01:09.14 reactions too. And couple of other 00:01:09.15\00:01:13.13 things they do was, shutdown my kidneys, 00:01:13.14\00:01:15.31 and several other things happened during that 00:01:16.21\00:01:20.25 time that caused my family severe distress, 00:01:20.26\00:01:25.49 they thought I was going to die. 00:01:25.50\00:01:26.97 While I'm here at the Newstart Program, 00:01:28.25\00:01:30.29 I would like to probably get back to normal 00:01:30.98\00:01:35.48 as much as possible. I don't know if that's 00:01:35.49\00:01:37.93 possible but I think being very optimistic 00:01:37.94\00:01:44.38 and I do step up the challenges that I can't 00:01:45.15\00:01:49.20 accomplish but with things 00:01:49.21\00:01:50.44 that help I'm going to get here. 00:01:50.45\00:01:52.16 Welcome back. I wanna get right 00:01:54.45\00:01:56.48 into the interview with Tom. 00:01:56.49\00:01:57.68 Tom, Tom Sherwood, how are you sir? 00:01:57.69\00:02:00.79 Great. Good to see you. Thank you. 00:02:00.80\00:02:02.85 And I guess for you it's good to be alive. 00:02:02.86\00:02:05.18 Very well, yes very good. 00:02:05.19\00:02:06.60 So, tell us what has happened, 00:02:07.46\00:02:09.15 I know that you've had some changes while 00:02:09.16\00:02:12.51 you've been here. You've had this heart 00:02:12.52\00:02:16.11 beat that keeps changing, tell us about that. 00:02:16.12\00:02:19.33 Well when I came here and my heart was in they 00:02:20.34\00:02:22.60 called a Atrial Fibrillation I guess, 00:02:22.61\00:02:25.65 and that means top heart is, 00:02:25.66\00:02:28.35 out of sync with the bottom of the heart 00:02:28.36\00:02:30.25 and it was it happened because maybe one of the 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.56 drugs that I was up subjected 00:02:34.57\00:02:37.54 to I was in hospital. And it put me on several, 00:02:37.55\00:02:42.58 several drugs of which because there was a virus 00:02:42.59\00:02:46.39 that attacked my heart, actually it wasn't 00:02:46.40\00:02:48.15 a heart attack. 00:02:48.16\00:02:49.13 Now, how long were you in the hospital 00:02:49.14\00:02:50.23 at that time? I was in hospital 00:02:50.24\00:02:52.10 eleven days. Eleven days! 00:02:52.11\00:02:53.76 You're trying to regulate the heart beat, 00:02:53.77\00:02:56.58 so both all chambers are fine in sequence, right? 00:02:56.59\00:03:00.80 Well they, they treated me as a heart attack 00:03:00.81\00:03:04.31 and that wasn't the problem. 00:03:04.32\00:03:05.35 It wasn't a heart attack, it was a virus. 00:03:05.36\00:03:07.21 They finally found out. So as they treated me 00:03:07.22\00:03:09.95 for the heart attack they kept pumping me with 00:03:09.96\00:03:13.49 drugs that are concerned with my heart, 00:03:13.50\00:03:16.11 which probably I shouldn't have received. 00:03:16.12\00:03:19.23 And eventually getting out of the hospital 00:03:20.04\00:03:23.60 and seeing the doctor and kind of researching 00:03:23.61\00:03:28.28 the drugs that I was on, brought this to him 00:03:28.29\00:03:32.03 and said, listen I didn't have a heart attack, 00:03:32.04\00:03:34.25 why am I on these drugs? 00:03:34.26\00:03:36.45 So then, since you've been here, 00:03:37.46\00:03:40.46 tell us a little bit about what's happened, 00:03:40.47\00:03:42.48 have you stop taking certain medications or? 00:03:42.49\00:03:46.74 Yes, I have. I've stopped taking 00:03:46.75\00:03:49.67 a couple before I got to Weimar, 00:03:49.68\00:03:51.46 and I was on actually two, one was called 00:03:51.47\00:03:56.09 Coumadin and the other is Coreg, 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.28 and the hope was that with the program here 00:03:58.29\00:04:04.59 and what they do for you that I would eventually 00:04:04.60\00:04:08.05 eliminate both those drugs. 00:04:08.06\00:04:09.75 Okay, and what did the program 00:04:10.32\00:04:11.75 do for you specifically? 00:04:11.76\00:04:13.48 Well they brought me back to life. 00:04:13.49\00:04:15.76 Brought you back to life back? 00:04:16.53\00:04:17.65 Yes. Yeah you were looking little more alive when 00:04:17.66\00:04:20.22 I first saw you. Yeah, I, I, when I got here 00:04:20.23\00:04:23.74 I was in pretty bad shape, and I've been an 00:04:23.75\00:04:27.22 athlete in all my life, so I'm not. 00:04:27.23\00:04:29.45 You were coach, aren't you? 00:04:29.46\00:04:30.43 A coach teacher. Yeah, okay teacher coach. 00:04:30.44\00:04:32.71 So, I'm not on accustomed to exercising 00:04:32.72\00:04:36.90 and I just retired. So I had been exercising 00:04:36.91\00:04:40.71 quite a bit and now when this happened it just 00:04:41.58\00:04:44.54 dragged me right down. And when I got to Weimar 00:04:44.55\00:04:48.05 I couldn't hardly walk the half a mile loop 00:04:48.06\00:04:52.19 that they have here and now I'm walking three 00:04:52.20\00:04:55.42 or four miles a day. Well, how about your weight? 00:04:55.43\00:04:59.89 Were you really overweight when you got here? 00:04:59.90\00:05:03.22 I was, I carried my weight well 00:05:03.84\00:05:06.35 they always tell me, but I was probably 00:05:06.36\00:05:09.00 30 pounds overweight, and that probably lost 00:05:09.01\00:05:12.76 pretty close to 8 or 10 pounds. Good. 00:05:12.77\00:05:15.12 And so that's helped with walking, 00:05:15.13\00:05:17.63 that's helped with the heart. 00:05:18.19\00:05:19.73 They feed me real well. I loved the, even though 00:05:19.74\00:05:26.11 it is vegan and I haven't had any meat or dairy 00:05:26.12\00:05:29.57 for 18 days, I have not been hungry 00:05:29.58\00:05:32.47 and in fact, I'm only eating two meals a day, 00:05:32.48\00:05:35.49 breakfast and lunch. And before I got here I, 00:05:35.50\00:05:39.45 my weight was because of a more because of sugar, 00:05:39.46\00:05:45.45 I like sugar and I eat a lot of candy and so on. 00:05:46.23\00:05:49.69 And I can honestly say I've not had a craving 00:05:49.70\00:05:55.41 like I had for sugar before. 00:05:55.42\00:05:58.51 So that's been the biggest plus that I could have 00:05:58.52\00:06:02.79 ever imagine to get rid of that addiction, 00:06:02.80\00:06:06.32 and I called that an addiction. 00:06:06.33\00:06:07.87 Yes, yes. So your heart is working properly now? 00:06:07.88\00:06:12.67 It, actually it went back to normal after 00:06:13.32\00:06:18.04 a few days and then the doctor and I just 00:06:18.05\00:06:21.39 yesterday he said, well it sounds like you 00:06:21.40\00:06:25.03 went back into A-fib and then this morning we had 00:06:25.04\00:06:28.61 a another treadmill experience where they hook 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.12 you up and look at your heart and he looked 00:06:34.13\00:06:36.43 back at me and he said, I think you are back into 00:06:36.44\00:06:39.20 normal rhythm again. Wow! And which was exciting. 00:06:39.21\00:06:42.94 My wife saying right behind me, yo hey, 00:06:45.32\00:06:46.29 because this been a very distressful time for her. 00:06:46.30\00:06:49.20 And so, I'm gone home healthy. 00:06:49.21\00:06:54.24 We've only got a couple of more days, 00:06:55.70\00:06:57.06 but I will maintain this. That's awesome, 00:06:57.07\00:07:02.33 that's awesome. It's good to hear. 00:07:02.34\00:07:03.96 Your wife is with you, you said now. 00:07:03.97\00:07:07.97 I know that she went through a lot of changes 00:07:07.98\00:07:10.52 as did my wife when I was having difficulties, 00:07:10.53\00:07:14.01 but were you kind a like on your death bed 00:07:14.02\00:07:18.62 and this was like your last choice here, 00:07:18.63\00:07:21.17 what was it one of your first choices? 00:07:21.18\00:07:24.09 I don't think my wife told me that they thought 00:07:28.18\00:07:31.66 that I may die. And when we got out 00:07:31.67\00:07:36.33 of the hospital they started to recover, 00:07:36.34\00:07:38.01 I did come out of it and start to recover 00:07:38.98\00:07:40.76 and Kathy had attended another lifestyle center 00:07:40.77\00:07:45.91 about 10 years ago. And she got on the 00:07:45.92\00:07:49.21 computer and started researching 00:07:49.22\00:07:51.14 the possibilities of where we should go? 00:07:51.15\00:07:55.37 She found three I believe and Weimar 00:07:55.95\00:07:58.91 was the best choice for us. 00:07:58.92\00:08:00.56 Even though that's probably the furthest away 00:08:01.43\00:08:03.93 we both decided that with what we had seen 00:08:04.89\00:08:09.04 and what we had heard and that this was the 00:08:09.05\00:08:13.71 place we had to come for us to get better. 00:08:13.72\00:08:15.68 Now tell us again where are you from? 00:08:15.69\00:08:17.34 Michigan. From Michigan, what part of Michigan? 00:08:17.35\00:08:19.81 Mid-State in Michigan, we're probably 90 miles 00:08:20.52\00:08:24.26 North of Detroit. Okay, so what else is that 00:08:24.27\00:08:29.00 you can tell our viewers that might help someone 00:08:29.01\00:08:32.51 with the similar situation as yours? 00:08:32.52\00:08:35.45 Weimar is just a place for people who have 00:08:35.46\00:08:41.21 heart problems. It's a place for just 00:08:41.22\00:08:45.77 about any kind of problem. They teach you, 00:08:45.78\00:08:49.85 how to control your eating? 00:08:50.70\00:08:53.34 They teach you, how to I guess, 00:08:54.34\00:08:59.74 handle your diseases, if you come with diabetes 00:08:59.75\00:09:03.87 or cancer or depression or things that the people 00:09:03.88\00:09:09.81 that are going through this with me now. 00:09:09.82\00:09:13.24 Everybody has some problems are the same, 00:09:13.78\00:09:17.27 but there are multiple, multiple problems that 00:09:17.28\00:09:20.57 these people have and you go through 00:09:20.58\00:09:25.05 this together. So you really develop 00:09:25.06\00:09:28.20 a community atmosphere here. 00:09:28.21\00:09:29.95 And so, it's not just for people who have 00:09:29.96\00:09:35.49 a heart problem. It's for anyone 00:09:35.50\00:09:38.96 who has a problem. So as I said to guest 00:09:38.97\00:09:42.78 in the past we have a program here it's like one 00:09:42.79\00:09:46.01 program that fixes everything, right, 00:09:46.02\00:09:48.55 I know that that's kind of boastful in some ways, 00:09:49.10\00:09:51.56 but it's the truth. We see things change 00:09:51.57\00:09:55.12 overnight here in 18 days. And Tom I'm so glad 00:09:55.13\00:10:00.56 to see that you're getting well and I thank you 00:10:00.57\00:10:02.56 for being on our program. God bless you, 00:10:02.57\00:10:05.29 in the months and years to come. 00:10:05.30\00:10:07.21 Thank you. Folks thanks for 00:10:07.22\00:10:09.34 joining us, but don't go away, 00:10:09.35\00:10:11.47 we have something to show you and then we'll be 00:10:11.48\00:10:13.74 right back to give you a little more information 00:10:13.75\00:10:16.56 about how you can start your own program 00:10:16.57\00:10:18.67 right in your own home. 00:10:18.68\00:10:20.28 Well, you've done very well. 00:10:21.84\00:10:23.11 Do you have diabetes, heart disease, 00:10:29.88\00:10:32.18 high blood pressure, or do you weight too much? 00:10:32.19\00:10:35.12 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing. Your health is one of 00:10:56.37\00:11:01.01 the most important things that you have, 00:11:01.02\00:11:02.81 don't wait, give us call at 00:11:02.82\00:11:04.99 800-525-9192 or visit our website newstart.com. 00:11:05.00\00:11:12.45 Hi, friends and welcome back. 00:11:27.62\00:11:29.34 As I promised we have Dr. Ing to my left. 00:11:29.94\00:11:33.52 Clarence Ing is our Medical Director here 00:11:34.26\00:11:37.68 at the Newstart Program for Weimar. 00:11:37.69\00:11:39.76 Dr. Ing, how are you sir? 00:11:40.33\00:11:41.40 It's pleasure to be here Ron. 00:11:41.41\00:11:43.20 Yeah, as I'm happy you're able to join us, 00:11:43.21\00:11:45.87 I know you're a busy man. 00:11:45.88\00:11:47.31 We were waiting on the set for you and I know 00:11:47.32\00:11:50.22 you had been with patients. 00:11:50.23\00:11:51.80 And I'd like to talk to about, 00:11:52.37\00:11:54.64 talk to you about one in particular that's Tom. 00:11:54.65\00:11:58.25 Now he was here yesterday and he says to us that 00:11:58.95\00:12:01.84 he has had some problems with his heart, 00:12:01.85\00:12:05.25 maybe you can elaborate on that. 00:12:05.26\00:12:07.23 Well according to the report said, 00:12:07.24\00:12:09.85 he came in with he had some type of infection of 00:12:09.86\00:12:13.33 his heart presumed to be a virus, 00:12:13.34\00:12:15.65 so it's term to Viral Myocarditis. 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.08 But his heart wasn't working very effectively 00:12:18.09\00:12:20.83 and wasn't very strong, and one of the ways 00:12:20.84\00:12:24.20 that's measured is with what is term the ejection 00:12:24.21\00:12:27.40 fraction when the heart pumps it pumps 00:12:27.41\00:12:29.52 out of certain amount of blood, 00:12:29.53\00:12:31.02 and you know normally the ejection fraction 00:12:31.03\00:12:34.18 is up like around 60% more or less and this is 00:12:34.19\00:12:37.68 like in the 20s, right, so it's considerably 00:12:37.69\00:12:40.76 weakened and this was evidence by you know, 00:12:40.77\00:12:44.51 his abilities when he first got here 00:12:44.52\00:12:47.10 he could walk, but he got short of 00:12:47.11\00:12:50.39 breath quite easily and he got tired quite easily. 00:12:50.40\00:12:53.74 Now is that able to be corrected 00:12:53.75\00:12:56.11 'cause he says yesterday, 00:12:56.12\00:12:57.57 now he has a better breath. 00:12:57.58\00:13:00.64 He is able to walk much further 00:13:01.15\00:13:02.87 and he feels stronger. Is the heart actually, 00:13:02.88\00:13:05.63 does it recuperate after an episode like that? 00:13:05.64\00:13:09.49 Right, well the heart is basically is a muscle. 00:13:09.50\00:13:11.99 Right! And you know, if you work with it you 00:13:12.00\00:13:16.59 start to exercise as he did walking, 00:13:16.60\00:13:19.18 his stamina and his endurance and his strength 00:13:19.19\00:13:23.48 has increased because like he says 00:13:23.49\00:13:24.92 he can walk further, he can walk faster 00:13:24.93\00:13:27.81 as we've recorded on his treadmill, 00:13:27.82\00:13:30.41 his exercise treadmill. His first treadmill 00:13:30.42\00:13:33.32 he went for about five minutes you know, 00:13:33.33\00:13:36.11 and then he couldn't go any further and on the 00:13:36.12\00:13:38.32 treadmill that we've repeated on him yesterday 00:13:38.33\00:13:40.68 he was able to go seven minutes which is a 00:13:40.69\00:13:43.54 40% increase in the time. Not only it was the 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.61 time increase, but also during the 00:13:46.62\00:13:48.69 last minute he is walking at a up more of an 00:13:48.70\00:13:52.64 incline and his, the speed is increase. 00:13:52.65\00:13:55.72 So, definitely he had improvement in his, 00:13:55.73\00:13:58.75 his endurance and his strength. 00:13:58.76\00:14:02.19 And I would be very interested to know 00:14:02.20\00:14:04.76 when he returns home and he has another 00:14:04.77\00:14:07.41 echocardiogram I would suspect that his ejection 00:14:07.42\00:14:11.65 fraction has improved as well. 00:14:11.66\00:14:13.64 Now that brings up another topic for me, 00:14:14.27\00:14:16.71 when our guests leave do you keep in touch 00:14:16.72\00:14:21.11 with them or do they often come back for 00:14:21.12\00:14:23.96 examinations and such? Some come back, 00:14:23.97\00:14:27.02 the ones that I care for personally in the little 00:14:27.03\00:14:31.15 book that I signed for them I have given them 00:14:31.16\00:14:34.16 my personal email, I've written that in there. 00:14:34.17\00:14:38.91 I've also written in my home telephone number. 00:14:38.92\00:14:42.01 So if they want to call me at any time you know, 00:14:42.02\00:14:45.26 they ask questions, they can do that you know, 00:14:45.27\00:14:47.99 I says you call me morning, noon or night. 00:14:48.00\00:14:50.23 If I'm home I'll ask to the phone, 00:14:50.83\00:14:52.45 if I'm not leave me an, leave me a 00:14:52.46\00:14:54.41 voicemail message and tell me 00:14:54.42\00:14:56.78 how late I can call you? 00:14:56.79\00:14:58.13 You know, I'll call you when I get the message, 00:14:58.14\00:15:00.10 but it maybe and the wee hours at the 00:15:00.11\00:15:02.19 morning especially depending on where you 00:15:02.20\00:15:04.17 live because sometimes they don't get those 00:15:04.18\00:15:06.60 messages till I get home in the evening, 00:15:06.61\00:15:08.71 sometimes that's a little bit late. 00:15:08.72\00:15:11.63 Folks let me just verify that little bit, 00:15:12.41\00:15:14.91 I remember when I was sick many years ago 00:15:15.41\00:15:18.10 I called Dr. Ing at his home and I think it was 00:15:18.11\00:15:22.64 about 11:00 PM on the West Coast here, 00:15:22.65\00:15:25.36 and he was spending time with me and I was 00:15:25.37\00:15:28.88 amazed because when I want to see my doctor 00:15:28.89\00:15:33.37 I usually had to wait an hour and an half or two 00:15:33.38\00:15:35.55 and then spend five minutes with him. 00:15:35.56\00:15:37.64 However, Dr. Ing took the time and spend at least 00:15:37.65\00:15:41.79 a half hour on the phone and because of Dr. Ing 00:15:41.80\00:15:44.83 I was able to come to Weimar to our 00:15:44.84\00:15:47.52 Newstart Program and go through the program 00:15:47.53\00:15:50.52 and get well. So I thank you Dr. Ing. 00:15:50.53\00:15:53.35 And I, and I know that you do care for people 00:15:53.36\00:15:56.62 and it shows and I love seeing them on the set 00:15:56.63\00:16:01.59 here and how they, they before and after and 00:16:01.60\00:16:05.06 we can elaborate a little bit about 00:16:05.07\00:16:07.16 that was time. Now, we praise the Lord 00:16:07.17\00:16:08.89 for that, but you know good 00:16:08.90\00:16:10.49 food moderate amounts of exercise within the 00:16:10.50\00:16:14.99 capabilities of the patient and a loving 00:16:15.00\00:16:18.01 caring environment and the Lord's blessing 00:16:18.02\00:16:20.28 does wonders for one's health. 00:16:20.29\00:16:21.93 Yeah. And we've seen that time and time again. 00:16:21.94\00:16:24.66 Yes. So is there something you could say to our 00:16:24.67\00:16:32.30 viewing audience that might encourage, 00:16:32.31\00:16:34.71 because we know that the heart diseases is a very 00:16:34.72\00:16:37.96 serious problem in this country along with 00:16:37.97\00:16:40.90 diabetes and obesity, which we seem to have 00:16:40.91\00:16:44.33 a number of people coming through our program, 00:16:44.34\00:16:46.99 is there something you could say to encourage 00:16:47.00\00:16:49.33 people, or perhaps given up hope? 00:16:49.34\00:16:52.29 Well, the good news is if you're going to make 00:16:52.98\00:16:54.90 changes in your life and to live 00:16:54.91\00:16:57.82 more healthfully, you know marvelous 00:16:57.83\00:16:59.87 things can happen. In one of our recent 00:16:59.88\00:17:02.00 programs we had a gentleman who came 00:17:02.01\00:17:04.27 to our program it was less than three weeks 00:17:04.28\00:17:06.48 after he had his coronary artery bypass graft 00:17:06.49\00:17:09.78 and he continue to improve. 00:17:09.79\00:17:13.16 In fact, as we look at him where 00:17:13.17\00:17:17.34 they took the, the grafts from his leg, 00:17:17.35\00:17:20.31 it was really pretty swollen, 00:17:20.32\00:17:21.51 but with good care and treatment here that went 00:17:21.52\00:17:26.93 down his stamina, his endurance improved, 00:17:26.94\00:17:30.05 his treadmill time improved and he 00:17:30.06\00:17:32.22 did very well. Cholesterol is usually 00:17:32.23\00:17:34.61 come down in these patients and we 00:17:34.62\00:17:37.06 expect that if they're able to continue to 00:17:37.07\00:17:38.77 follow this program, if there are problem 00:17:38.78\00:17:40.97 with their heart disease that is caused by 00:17:40.98\00:17:42.31 narrowed arteries, they've had books which 00:17:42.32\00:17:44.53 have been written that heart disease 00:17:44.54\00:17:45.99 can be reversed, and those arteries can be 00:17:46.00\00:17:48.77 opened up again. We've seen this and 00:17:48.78\00:17:50.51 people will continue to follow their program. 00:17:50.52\00:17:53.27 Wasn't that man and I remember him quite well 00:17:54.28\00:17:57.07 because I was amazed that he was here three weeks 00:17:57.08\00:18:00.17 after his open heart surgery and as you know, 00:18:00.18\00:18:02.81 I had opened heart surgery, 00:18:02.82\00:18:04.08 but three weeks after the surgery I wasn't going 00:18:04.71\00:18:08.02 anywhere like he was. He just, I was very 00:18:08.03\00:18:11.52 impressed by that and the care that he received 00:18:11.53\00:18:14.62 here at Weimar of course, I know was exceptional 00:18:14.63\00:18:18.37 and because of that he recuperated rather fast, 00:18:18.38\00:18:21.97 don't you think, I mean? 00:18:21.98\00:18:23.34 Oh! He did, he did marvelously well you know, 00:18:23.35\00:18:25.57 what he was able to do physically. 00:18:25.58\00:18:27.56 Yeah. And you know his treadmills you know time 00:18:27.57\00:18:31.47 increased and you know he says you know, 00:18:31.48\00:18:35.44 it doesn't hurt as much. I mean when you get 00:18:35.45\00:18:37.54 someone who makes an incision from here to here 00:18:37.55\00:18:40.53 and they get a big sour in there and they kind of 00:18:40.54\00:18:43.16 open things up and you're kind of uncomfortable, 00:18:43.17\00:18:46.46 but he made a very excellent and marvelous 00:18:46.47\00:18:49.17 recovery and he continues to do well. 00:18:49.18\00:18:51.55 So, as we continue to talk about Tom, 00:18:52.72\00:18:56.15 what's the prognosis, what do you think about 00:18:56.16\00:19:00.83 his situation? I think as Tom continues 00:19:00.84\00:19:02.47 to follow these principles and, 00:19:02.48\00:19:04.01 and exercise and lose weight moderate gradually 00:19:04.02\00:19:07.86 increasing the amounts of exercise, 00:19:07.87\00:19:10.53 the intensive exercise I think that is prognosis 00:19:10.54\00:19:13.74 is good and he should do very well. 00:19:13.75\00:19:15.54 Oh! That's excellent. So, Dr. Ing I know you 00:19:15.55\00:19:19.91 said, you've been here about 12 years. 00:19:19.92\00:19:22.33 How many heart patients do you think you've 00:19:23.39\00:19:26.70 dealt with in those 12 years or care to take 00:19:26.71\00:19:30.49 stab out? Oh! It's probably by now you know, 00:19:30.50\00:19:34.72 somewhere it's between 50 and 100 or more because 00:19:34.73\00:19:37.53 you know his heart is you know, 00:19:37.54\00:19:41.28 I just don't recall exactly, 00:19:41.29\00:19:42.48 but we always we usually have patients with some 00:19:42.49\00:19:45.81 form of heart diseases in every session two or 00:19:45.82\00:19:48.29 three of them like and sometime we have people 00:19:48.30\00:19:50.34 with diabetes many, many people with diabetes, 00:19:50.35\00:19:52.70 and so in each session I would say we averaged 00:19:53.21\00:19:56.22 between you know five and six people diabetes 00:19:56.23\00:20:00.93 and you know four to five people with some form 00:20:00.94\00:20:04.00 of heart disease and those are cared for 00:20:04.01\00:20:05.90 between you know Dr. Lukens and myself and 00:20:05.91\00:20:08.81 the other physicians who work with patients. 00:20:08.82\00:20:10.68 So, is it fair to say then if a heart patient, 00:20:12.20\00:20:16.52 heart patient let me clarify someone who has 00:20:16.53\00:20:20.58 had a stroke or has high blood pressure or some 00:20:20.59\00:20:24.92 form of cardio disease, if there were to come 00:20:24.93\00:20:28.34 here to Weimar to our Newstart Program, 00:20:31.40\00:20:32.37 is it fair to say that they're gonna get better, 00:20:32.38\00:20:34.61 is that something that we would actually 00:20:35.37\00:20:37.19 say openly and. In most cases they will 00:20:37.20\00:20:40.38 get better stroke patients it really depends on 00:20:40.39\00:20:43.42 the severity of the stroke and what residual 00:20:43.43\00:20:45.88 effects they have you know, 00:20:45.89\00:20:48.17 if they're paralyzed or not, 00:20:48.18\00:20:50.14 how long they've had you know, 00:20:50.15\00:20:51.59 how long they've had their muscular weakness 00:20:52.84\00:20:55.66 or paralysis. So it's variable. 00:20:55.67\00:20:58.30 Some people have made very dramatic improvement, 00:20:59.12\00:21:01.13 some people is much slower, so it depends. 00:21:01.14\00:21:04.49 But with heart disease I'm probably much more 00:21:04.50\00:21:07.33 optimistic, but people with stroke it bit, 00:21:07.34\00:21:09.40 like I said depends on the severity of the stroke 00:21:09.41\00:21:11.60 and which part of the brain has been affected. 00:21:11.61\00:21:14.66 We're running out of time, thank you so much 00:21:14.67\00:21:17.85 for joining us Dr. Ing, and thank you folks, 00:21:17.86\00:21:20.56 but don't go away we've got a tip for you in a 00:21:20.57\00:21:23.42 couple of minutes. God bless you 00:21:23.43\00:21:25.19 and have a great day. 00:21:25.20\00:21:26.59 Hi, welcome to Newstart Now, 00:21:40.97\00:21:42.35 I'm Don Mackintosh. We're glad that you're 00:21:42.36\00:21:44.06 with us today. We're gonna talking about 00:21:44.07\00:21:45.46 the heart and let me get it turned up here the 00:21:45.47\00:21:48.11 right way and talking with us about the heart is 00:21:48.12\00:21:50.89 Dr. Brian Schwartz, he is a cardiologist 00:21:50.90\00:21:53.17 from currently from Ohio. We're glad that you're 00:21:53.18\00:21:55.32 with us today. Well, thank you Don. 00:21:55.33\00:21:56.81 And you know you all day about the heart to 00:21:56.82\00:22:00.28 people and you know, you're in 00:22:00.29\00:22:01.87 Interventional Cardiologist, that's right, 00:22:01.88\00:22:04.50 that means you can do interventions. 00:22:04.51\00:22:06.28 I want to talk about you know, 00:22:06.77\00:22:08.14 people come in and they have these feelings like 00:22:08.15\00:22:11.73 their hearts jumping or different things and 00:22:11.74\00:22:13.69 what's happening with that? 00:22:13.70\00:22:15.48 Can you talk to us about these kind things? 00:22:15.49\00:22:17.65 I'm sure, we call those palpitations, 00:22:17.66\00:22:19.61 if you like your heart is skipping beats are 00:22:19.62\00:22:21.46 raising that can occur from several different 00:22:21.47\00:22:25.67 things probably the most serious cause is the 00:22:25.68\00:22:27.85 condition called Atrial Fibrillation. 00:22:27.86\00:22:29.46 Okay and where are the atria are? 00:22:29.47\00:22:31.68 Yeah, atrial fibrillation occurs when the upper 00:22:31.69\00:22:33.60 chambers of the heart and there are four main 00:22:33.61\00:22:35.24 chambers- two ventricles, two atriums. Okay, 00:22:35.25\00:22:37.87 so if I'd looking at this and I opened it up here 00:22:37.88\00:22:39.95 that would be let me just see where are those? 00:22:39.96\00:22:43.09 Now there they are. Right, so, hold it right 00:22:43.10\00:22:45.02 to the camera there. Atrium, the left atrium, 00:22:45.03\00:22:48.21 the right atrium around the upper parts, 00:22:48.22\00:22:49.68 the lower chambers are called ventricles. 00:22:49.69\00:22:51.54 Okay, so the atrial fibrillation is this part 00:22:51.55\00:22:53.57 kind of shaking? So, atrial fibrillation 00:22:53.58\00:22:55.64 absolutely occurs when the upper chamber may 00:22:55.65\00:22:58.29 stretch or dilute a little bit and then instead 00:22:58.30\00:23:00.84 of the natural pacemaker which is located up in 00:23:00.85\00:23:02.86 the right atrium taking over and controlling the 00:23:02.87\00:23:05.06 rhythm of the heart in a regular basis, 00:23:05.07\00:23:06.96 the whole upper chamber is just kind 00:23:06.97\00:23:09.02 of fibrillate, in a disorganized manner 00:23:09.03\00:23:10.75 and that's why we call it Fibrillation. 00:23:10.76\00:23:12.45 Now why is that so dangerous? 00:23:12.46\00:23:13.44 As you said, you said it's one of the 00:23:13.45\00:23:14.89 most dangerous things, why is that? 00:23:14.90\00:23:16.43 Yeah, it some, first of all it's a very 00:23:16.44\00:23:18.09 common condition one out every five people 00:23:18.10\00:23:20.21 over the age of 65 may develop it, 00:23:20.22\00:23:22.04 and the biggest risk is that it can be 00:23:22.05\00:23:25.17 unrecognized source of stroke. 00:23:25.18\00:23:27.24 When the upper chamber is just fibrillating 00:23:27.25\00:23:29.40 and not squeezing vigorously blood can 00:23:29.41\00:23:31.74 just pull and swell around in there 00:23:31.75\00:23:33.53 and eventually it could lead to small 00:23:33.54\00:23:34.93 blood clot forming. If that blood clot then 00:23:34.94\00:23:37.33 broccolis and travel up to the brain it could 00:23:37.34\00:23:39.47 cause a stroke. Okay. This is a common 00:23:39.48\00:23:41.56 cause of stroke. So, what do you do for that? 00:23:41.57\00:23:43.55 Can you help people with that? 00:23:43.56\00:23:45.28 Yeah, so the first thing is to recognize that 00:23:45.29\00:23:46.98 problem does exist. Sometimes we can just 00:23:46.99\00:23:52.07 use medicines to control the rhythm of the heart 00:23:52.08\00:23:54.42 and prevent the Atrial Fibrillation. 00:23:54.43\00:23:56.22 There are some special procedures where catheters 00:23:56.96\00:23:59.03 can be placed up into the heart that can clear 00:23:59.04\00:24:02.28 a scar that reduces the risk for 00:24:02.29\00:24:04.57 Atrial Fibrillation, but in the large group 00:24:04.58\00:24:07.73 of patients we have to use medications to prevent 00:24:07.74\00:24:09.91 a blood clot and so they would have to go on a 00:24:09.92\00:24:12.47 blood that are medication. And so there is really 00:24:12.48\00:24:14.36 not any kind of natural remedy for that. 00:24:14.37\00:24:16.43 They really need to see someone like you. 00:24:16.44\00:24:17.86 Yeah, if someone and truly has 00:24:17.87\00:24:19.32 Atrial Fibrillation, I'm not aware of any 00:24:19.33\00:24:22.15 supplements that would have in effect within the 00:24:22.16\00:24:25.17 blood enough to prevent that risk for stroke. 00:24:25.18\00:24:27.16 So, you said you can put it like a little tube up 00:24:27.17\00:24:28.83 there and cause some scarring, 00:24:28.84\00:24:30.10 and I imagine that just kind of makes it so it 00:24:30.11\00:24:31.94 can't fibrillate as much, is that the idea? 00:24:31.95\00:24:33.63 I'm gonna actually part of the reason why 00:24:33.64\00:24:36.03 fibrillation occurs is because, 00:24:36.04\00:24:37.33 if the atrium is too big it takes a long time for 00:24:37.34\00:24:40.11 the rhythm that travel all the way around 00:24:40.12\00:24:41.29 the heart. I see. If we can reduce the size 00:24:41.30\00:24:43.93 either by doing surgery and cutting out part of 00:24:43.94\00:24:47.56 the atrium or by creating a scar that isolates 00:24:47.57\00:24:50.53 the upper part of the atrium from the main body 00:24:50.54\00:24:52.39 of the atrium that has less tissue and it can 00:24:52.40\00:24:54.71 actually cause normal rhythm to be restoring. 00:24:54.72\00:24:56.89 Fascinating! So there is atrial 00:24:58.08\00:24:59.40 fibrillation or what other kind of rhythms do 00:24:59.41\00:25:01.89 you see? Okay, so commonly in 00:25:01.90\00:25:03.39 young people we'll see just occasional 00:25:03.40\00:25:05.11 skip beats. You know, it's not uncommon and 00:25:05.12\00:25:07.24 for young person to feel just to skipped 00:25:08.26\00:25:10.71 irritable beat that comes from the upper chamber 00:25:10.72\00:25:12.52 of the heart we call that a 00:25:12.53\00:25:13.50 Premature Atrial Contraction (PAC). 00:25:13.51\00:25:15.99 They may occur frequently and particularly during 00:25:16.87\00:25:20.64 periods of stress like someone oncologist taking 00:25:20.65\00:25:23.21 exams, they can change with, 00:25:23.22\00:25:25.37 change in the hormones, if someone becomes 00:25:25.38\00:25:27.57 pregnant it becomes very common, 00:25:27.58\00:25:29.07 excess caffeine makes the heart much more 00:25:31.05\00:25:33.27 irritable and it's much more like that it cause 00:25:33.28\00:25:34.97 PACs or extra beats. And then you can also have 00:25:34.98\00:25:38.19 a beat that comes from the lower chamber call the 00:25:38.20\00:25:40.56 PVC or Premature Ventricular Contraction. 00:25:40.57\00:25:42.91 So more dangerous? Not I think, 00:25:42.92\00:25:44.97 almost all of us, you and I probably 00:25:44.98\00:25:47.22 have a few of these everyday and we just don't 00:25:47.23\00:25:48.99 know this. Especially, when we work for the 00:25:49.00\00:25:50.12 cameras or something. That's right, 00:25:50.13\00:25:51.37 but when it becomes more frequent or if it were 00:25:51.38\00:25:54.83 to become continues a whole run of PVCs we 00:25:54.84\00:25:57.52 call them ventricular tachycardia that can be 00:25:57.53\00:25:59.23 life threatening and weak heart it. 00:25:59.24\00:26:00.80 So really to figure this out you need to see 00:26:01.27\00:26:02.81 someone like yourself, someone they can tell 00:26:02.82\00:26:05.84 you which is happening, get EKG, 00:26:05.85\00:26:07.58 look at that little bit closely. 00:26:07.59\00:26:08.56 Yeah, the most important thing is to identify 00:26:08.57\00:26:10.48 what type of rhythm it really is as we do that 00:26:10.49\00:26:12.54 either with an EKG or by wearing a hot monitor 00:26:12.55\00:26:14.72 for 24 hours and an echocardiogram to tell us 00:26:14.73\00:26:17.95 if the heart is stretched up. 00:26:17.96\00:26:18.98 We've been talking with Dr. Brian Schwartz, 00:26:20.14\00:26:21.56 we've been talking about these different 00:26:21.57\00:26:22.86 arrhythmias or heart palpitations and different 00:26:22.87\00:26:25.48 things that you may need to check out. 00:26:25.49\00:26:27.03 When you come to Newstart here 00:26:27.04\00:26:28.34 we do those kind of EKGs as well not everything 00:26:28.35\00:26:31.14 he's talked about, but some of it. 00:26:31.15\00:26:32.53 And we hope that today you've learnt 00:26:32.91\00:26:34.26 something that can help you with your heart 00:26:34.27\00:26:36.18 and help you have a Newstart right now, 00:26:36.19\00:26:38.68 if you want some more information go to our 00:26:38.69\00:26:40.23 website and we have some more there. 00:26:40.24\00:26:42.06 Thank you, for being with us doctor. 00:26:42.07\00:26:43.42 Well, you're very welcome.
