Welcome to another edition of Newstart Now, 00:00:24.11\00:00:26.66 a program that showcases guests while 00:00:27.21\00:00:30.01 attending our 18 day lifestyle session here at 00:00:30.02\00:00:33.70 Weimar. My name is Ron Giannoni and I'll be 00:00:33.71\00:00:37.49 your host today. We have a special guest 00:00:37.50\00:00:40.09 today, his name is Joe Westbury. 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.93 Joe is the Managing Editor of our nation's 00:00:44.60\00:00:48.07 oldest Christian newspaper. 00:00:48.10\00:00:50.20 Can we run a clip right now? 00:00:51.20\00:00:52.62 I am only on two units a day. 00:00:53.94\00:00:55.48 A doctor back in Atlanta told me that I 00:00:56.73\00:00:59.38 didn't have to get on insulin but it'd be good 00:00:59.39\00:01:00.92 if I did just to sort of top off my tank. 00:01:00.93\00:01:03.43 And so I am on that, to just sort of help me 00:01:03.82\00:01:05.21 keep me going being very aggressive. 00:01:05.22\00:01:06.99 And, but he thinks that if I could get my 00:01:07.38\00:01:11.49 exercise regime and stay on the diet, 00:01:11.85\00:01:14.02 I'd be able to get off of it. 00:01:14.31\00:01:15.34 That's what Dr. Amy told me here also. 00:01:15.35\00:01:17.21 What I like to do, my long term goal is to 00:01:18.28\00:01:20.47 live a very healthy long life. 00:01:20.48\00:01:23.56 The way stock markets are going, 00:01:23.77\00:01:25.04 I thought I'd retire at 65, now it's, 00:01:26.00\00:01:28.22 until 2 months ago at 67 and now the way 00:01:28.88\00:01:32.17 the retirement you got 401 is now 201. 00:01:32.18\00:01:34.83 I'm pretty much guarantee I have to go 00:01:35.23\00:01:36.34 to 70 and I've got a wife, got two young girls 00:01:36.35\00:01:39.42 and so I want to be there for them as long 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.36 as possible and then at 70 when I retire, 00:01:42.37\00:01:46.09 I want to be there for my wife in retirement. 00:01:46.97\00:01:49.06 So they'll be going to school, 00:01:49.24\00:01:50.68 I don't want to be an univalent or cripple, 00:01:50.69\00:01:52.26 her push me around in a wheelchair, 00:01:52.27\00:01:53.68 because I live reckless and I want us to have 00:01:53.69\00:01:56.25 many more years together with a 00:01:56.38\00:01:57.70 very good healthy lifestyle. 00:01:57.71\00:01:59.52 Joe, tell us, how did you hear about the 00:02:00.94\00:02:03.20 Newstart program. About five years ago, 00:02:03.21\00:02:07.15 Weimar brought the reversing diabetics similar 00:02:08.09\00:02:10.13 to Georgia and I was very skeptical of it and 00:02:10.14\00:02:12.31 checked into it and thought it was basically 00:02:12.32\00:02:14.52 snake whirling and really believe it same 00:02:14.53\00:02:16.68 reversing diabetes, I've always been told you 00:02:16.69\00:02:19.00 got diabetes you die with diabetes, 00:02:19.01\00:02:20.57 it doesn't go away. As I checked into it, 00:02:20.58\00:02:23.01 attended the four day seminar, 00:02:23.02\00:02:25.51 I was very impressed by what I learned, 00:02:25.52\00:02:27.16 put some of those principles to work in my 00:02:27.26\00:02:29.24 life and I hadn't been diagnosed too many years 00:02:29.25\00:02:33.31 before I am struggling to getting the weight 00:02:33.32\00:02:34.79 off, the doctor said I had to get my weight off 00:02:34.80\00:02:36.47 and said after what I learned there at 00:02:36.48\00:02:38.54 reversing diabetes seminar, 00:02:38.55\00:02:39.89 I dropped 55 pounds, I went from 205 to 150, 00:02:40.24\00:02:44.81 which is about where I am now and it's 00:02:44.82\00:02:46.98 basically from a discipline of eating a 00:02:46.99\00:02:49.68 healthy meal, living a good lifestyle and 00:02:49.69\00:02:52.94 exercising daily, diet and exercise. 00:02:52.95\00:02:55.52 Yes, you share with me sometime during 00:02:56.28\00:03:00.15 the session that your sugar level just had 00:03:00.16\00:03:03.26 pretty much gotten down to normal, 00:03:03.67\00:03:06.30 could you tell me a little bit about that. 00:03:06.46\00:03:07.93 Before I came here I was just tired and I 00:03:08.03\00:03:11.69 wouldn't say depressed but struggling, 00:03:11.70\00:03:13.21 with just the maintenance and so they 00:03:13.22\00:03:15.50 had gotten high, wake you up in the morning, 00:03:15.51\00:03:16.93 that would be 150, 160 which that should be 00:03:16.94\00:03:20.37 around 110 or 100 and I've been here for 00:03:20.38\00:03:23.39 16 days and in the mornings they are running 00:03:23.54\00:03:25.65 between 90 and 110. Fantastic. 00:03:25.66\00:03:28.89 And that's just not by look that's by applying 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.83 the principles that I learned here at Newstart. 00:03:30.84\00:03:32.97 And what are some of the principles you 00:03:33.34\00:03:35.29 learned here at Newstart and what maybe the 00:03:35.30\00:03:37.38 first day you got here. Tell us a little bit 00:03:37.39\00:03:39.50 about your experience. One of the shocks 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.46 is early to bed and early to rise. 00:03:41.47\00:03:42.88 In bed by 9 O'clock not forced on you but the 00:03:43.95\00:03:46.66 idea of getting a good night sleep. 00:03:46.67\00:03:49.80 I had not been getting a good night sleep 00:03:49.81\00:03:50.78 and not eating a full dinner before you go to 00:03:50.79\00:03:52.52 bed. Something adequate but not full, 00:03:52.53\00:03:54.59 good night sleep, getting up early and 00:03:54.96\00:03:56.96 getting some exercise at home. 00:03:56.97\00:03:58.58 I would walk but just the idea of there's a 00:03:58.59\00:04:02.87 time and place for everything in your life, 00:04:02.88\00:04:04.44 there's a time for rest. I was going to bed 00:04:04.45\00:04:06.60 at 11, 12 O'clock at night, getting up at 5:30, 00:04:06.61\00:04:09.27 working hard and just not taking the time 00:04:10.92\00:04:13.31 to slow down. So that's one of the important 00:04:13.32\00:04:15.25 things about being in a environment like this 00:04:15.26\00:04:17.81 is learning the importance of reprioritizing 00:04:17.82\00:04:21.48 what you're doing and learning some new 00:04:21.49\00:04:22.80 habits. I gotcha, so did you have your own 00:04:22.81\00:04:27.30 private room here? Had a private room, 00:04:27.31\00:04:29.57 very nice, private bath, very well appointed, 00:04:29.74\00:04:34.07 have no problems with that, great staff, 00:04:34.52\00:04:36.92 very friendly people. What did you do all day, 00:04:37.02\00:04:39.65 tell us about that. There are a few hours 00:04:40.01\00:04:43.26 of instruction, you get a syllabus that you 00:04:43.27\00:04:46.02 go through with each professor. 00:04:46.03\00:04:47.34 He has a PowerPoint on the screen, 00:04:47.44\00:04:48.87 you go to that follow through, 00:04:48.88\00:04:50.08 you take notes. You start the morning to get 00:04:50.09\00:04:53.23 exercise, you go to breakfast. 00:04:53.24\00:04:54.93 You have a devotional period if you want to 00:04:55.02\00:04:56.75 attend it, this is good spiritual environment, 00:04:56.76\00:04:59.94 nothing is forced on anybody. 00:04:59.95\00:05:01.29 There are people here of all faiths, 00:05:01.68\00:05:03.15 people of no faiths. So you bring to the 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.53 table what you're in your life and you can 00:05:05.54\00:05:07.52 explore that more if you want to, 00:05:07.53\00:05:09.36 the professors begin, instructors begin every 00:05:09.45\00:05:13.23 class with prayer. I was impressed with that, 00:05:13.24\00:05:15.24 during the day you'll have a doctor's visit 00:05:15.86\00:05:18.05 and doctor will be to begin that and end it 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.77 with prayer. Again I was very impressed with 00:05:20.78\00:05:22.79 that, you learned how to eat good, 00:05:22.80\00:05:25.58 to making good menu choices. 00:05:25.59\00:05:27.29 You go to cooking class, I used to be a decent 00:05:27.77\00:05:31.14 cook before I got married, when I got 00:05:31.15\00:05:32.48 married what you need for that anymore, 00:05:32.49\00:05:33.86 I can't even boil water now, 00:05:34.27\00:05:35.53 but I have learned some pretty good ways to 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.20 mix tofu with other ingredients and I think 00:05:38.36\00:05:40.85 I'm a fairly proficient cook and my wife's gonna 00:05:40.86\00:05:43.14 be very impressed when I get back and put some 00:05:43.15\00:05:45.69 of these recipes into play. 00:05:45.70\00:05:47.22 Tell us what the food, how do, do you like the 00:05:49.55\00:05:51.47 food here, was it? I do like the food, 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.87 when you're thinking about going vegan, 00:05:54.29\00:05:55.75 you're thinking about hippies living in trees 00:05:56.25\00:05:58.40 back in the 60s and 70s and you know Euell 00:05:58.41\00:06:01.03 Gibbons and that whole thing, but the food 00:06:01.04\00:06:03.48 is tasty and I was eating with one of the staff 00:06:03.59\00:06:07.57 one time and I said wow, this is really nice. 00:06:07.58\00:06:09.91 This is surprisingly tasty, he says why do 00:06:09.92\00:06:11.67 you keep saying that, surprisingly tasty I just, 00:06:11.68\00:06:14.81 I'm not used to it. Right. But we had some 00:06:14.82\00:06:17.12 really nice meat substitutes that with the 00:06:17.13\00:06:19.62 gravy and everything, it was very good. 00:06:19.63\00:06:21.59 That I'm thinking about taking and making one 00:06:22.13\00:06:23.90 of the chicken enchilada, not chicken but some 00:06:23.91\00:06:29.75 of the soy, soy curls they use which is just 00:06:29.76\00:06:32.01 like chicken to a friend's house, 00:06:32.02\00:06:34.20 when we go out for Christmas dinner in a 00:06:34.21\00:06:35.56 couple of weeks. Fantastic. And I'm gonna 00:06:35.57\00:06:37.92 cook it. Well now other than the lectures and 00:06:37.93\00:06:42.94 such, I understand you had hydro therapy 00:06:42.95\00:06:46.39 and massage therapy. Never had, 00:06:46.40\00:06:49.04 had 5 treatments over 16 to 18 days, 00:06:49.05\00:06:51.86 I'd never had a massage in my life, 00:06:51.87\00:06:53.48 never had hydro therapy. 00:06:53.50\00:06:54.66 We have sauna treatment, the steam 00:06:55.28\00:06:58.59 bath, you get Epsom salt bath, 00:06:58.60\00:07:01.43 you get excellent massages, massages with 00:07:01.44\00:07:03.57 stones which, and you really leave completely 00:07:03.58\00:07:08.47 refreshed and rejuvenated. It does 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.25 wonders for your immune system and for 00:07:10.26\00:07:12.35 your circulation. Fantastic. It's just been, 00:07:12.36\00:07:14.54 that's just been education itself for me, 00:07:14.86\00:07:16.56 it was I've paid for many massages for my 00:07:16.57\00:07:19.37 wife but I never had the benefit of one 00:07:19.38\00:07:21.15 myself. So, they're wonderful. So you kind 00:07:21.16\00:07:24.56 of eluted to how you arrived here at the 00:07:24.57\00:07:28.17 Newstart program at Weimar. 00:07:28.18\00:07:29.82 But why did you choose Weimar specifically or 00:07:30.74\00:07:33.72 I should say the Newstart program, 00:07:33.73\00:07:35.40 when you had so many other close to you? 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.76 I've been very impressed with what I've read 00:07:38.79\00:07:40.28 about Weimar being endorsed by several 00:07:40.29\00:07:43.11 of the nation's leading nutritionists and Tico and 00:07:43.12\00:07:45.90 Cambo and others. And so I've been very 00:07:45.91\00:07:48.36 impressed with their credibility. 00:07:48.37\00:07:50.20 And so, when you get endorsed with some 00:07:50.78\00:07:52.57 of the top names in the profession, 00:07:52.58\00:07:54.77 you shut up and take notice of it. 00:07:55.32\00:07:56.66 Absolutely. Okay, now was there anything else 00:07:57.26\00:08:01.36 you would like to share with us about the 00:08:01.37\00:08:02.93 program that maybe surprised you or that 00:08:02.94\00:08:06.35 you're quite ready for? What I can looking for, 00:08:06.36\00:08:10.88 2008 was a tough year for me, because a lot 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.58 of stress at the job, being a father, 00:08:13.59\00:08:17.37 being a husband and I've gotten tired of 00:08:17.38\00:08:19.06 diabetes. I wanted to just throw it away but 00:08:19.07\00:08:21.59 you can't do that and I just needed to learn 00:08:21.60\00:08:25.23 some new discipline. And I wanted to come 00:08:25.24\00:08:28.97 here, I love the idea of a two week programs, 00:08:28.98\00:08:31.92 you can take that time out of your life and 00:08:31.93\00:08:33.30 get somewhere to learn. So break some old 00:08:33.31\00:08:36.42 habits and learn some new habits and that's 00:08:36.43\00:08:38.54 what I came looking for and that's what I 00:08:38.55\00:08:39.91 received. Great. I think now when I go back 00:08:39.92\00:08:43.95 home, fly back to Atlanta tomorrow, 00:08:43.96\00:08:46.64 when it comes time to have a church meeting. 00:08:46.97\00:08:48.59 I would have been able to stand up and say, 00:08:49.16\00:08:50.51 get behind me fried chicken. 00:08:50.52\00:08:51.96 Okay, so you're a total vegan at this point? 00:08:54.67\00:08:57.52 I am and I really would like to stay that way. 00:08:57.74\00:09:00.45 Okay. And it's a progression but I see the 00:09:00.70\00:09:03.71 many benefits of it and I've been reading 00:09:03.72\00:09:05.54 before I came here and not just the Newstart 00:09:05.55\00:09:07.19 materials and other materials in the book 00:09:07.20\00:09:08.85 stores and some self educated and I felt like 00:09:08.86\00:09:12.24 that's the direction the nation needs to go. 00:09:12.25\00:09:14.28 Yes, why do you say that? We're heading 00:09:15.05\00:09:17.37 toward a major lifestyle crisis, 00:09:17.38\00:09:20.02 health crisis in our nation and it's something 00:09:20.55\00:09:22.82 I was reading about the other day that the 00:09:22.83\00:09:24.98 new present is coming, it's going to have to 00:09:24.99\00:09:26.67 deal with is the threat to the nation's 00:09:26.68\00:09:31.11 economy in the next 10 to 20 years of people 00:09:31.12\00:09:33.75 who are not taking care of themselves and 00:09:33.76\00:09:35.18 we don't have the money in the national budget. 00:09:35.19\00:09:37.05 What we need is money for preventive 00:09:37.49\00:09:39.97 medicine and I am trying to prevent my 00:09:39.98\00:09:43.65 illnesses that I could, I want to dodge illnesses 00:09:43.66\00:09:47.81 that I could get otherwise by having an 00:09:47.82\00:09:49.89 unhealthy lifestyle. Well a couple 00:11:50.79\00:11:53.43 of classmates and I, husband and wife they 00:11:53.44\00:11:57.66 had such a stressful internship that was at 00:11:58.36\00:12:01.07 the County hospital and they said let's take 00:12:01.18\00:12:03.55 a year off and I said, what do you have in mind, 00:12:03.56\00:12:06.27 they said let's got to Africa and I said, 00:12:06.28\00:12:07.83 Africa? What's in the Africa? You know they 00:12:07.84\00:12:11.12 said, well we thought if we went over there, 00:12:11.13\00:12:14.17 we could help out at a mission hospital and then 00:12:14.18\00:12:17.33 we can you know make our way back up to 00:12:17.39\00:12:19.80 the game parts and have a nice time. 00:12:19.81\00:12:22.53 So 12 years later. Actually it was 15. 00:12:22.74\00:12:25.49 Oh 15. Three years at a little hospital in 00:12:25.72\00:12:29.25 Western Zambia, which was really really isolated, 00:12:29.26\00:12:33.80 no electricity, lot of time no running water. 00:12:34.28\00:12:37.24 Four hundred miles to the grocery store and 00:12:37.44\00:12:40.11 that's all the part of the reason why these 00:12:40.29\00:12:42.40 people are so healthy, they have to grow their 00:12:42.41\00:12:44.30 own food and then after three years we went 00:12:44.31\00:12:48.31 down to a little country called Lesotho and we 00:12:48.32\00:12:50.97 worked in one of our really nice mission 00:12:50.98\00:12:54.32 hospitals where we had nurses training. 00:12:54.33\00:12:56.32 And one of the things that we were there for 00:12:56.84\00:12:58.47 12 years, six years in the hospital and then 00:12:58.48\00:13:01.59 doing public health work, which is really, 00:13:01.60\00:13:04.23 really important because that's what the 00:13:04.24\00:13:05.85 people need over there. But anyway the 00:13:05.86\00:13:08.57 recurrent thing was I kept looking back and 00:13:08.58\00:13:11.58 seeing the people in the university hospital 00:13:11.59\00:13:14.67 and the diseases that they had. Our member 00:13:14.68\00:13:17.10 had a really good experience on cardiology, 00:13:17.11\00:13:19.36 we had people just come in and they would just 00:13:19.75\00:13:21.48 die right there you know. Right in front of us, 00:13:21.49\00:13:24.03 and I thought you know I don't see any heart 00:13:24.04\00:13:27.37 attacks over here and or in the 15 years 00:13:27.38\00:13:30.60 we were there. There were two people that had 00:13:30.79\00:13:32.90 bonafide heart attacks and they just don't 00:13:32.91\00:13:35.46 have it. Dr. Castelli says the reason why is 00:13:35.47\00:13:39.00 that their cholesterol is below 150 and 00:13:39.01\00:13:41.28 Dr. T Colin Campbell in the China study, 00:13:41.78\00:13:44.15 same thing there low cholesterol, 00:13:44.85\00:13:46.44 no plugged up arteries, no coronary artery 00:13:47.18\00:13:49.75 disease. By in large, and so and also in the 00:13:49.76\00:13:54.12 two hospitals I was in, there was nobody had 00:13:54.13\00:13:56.76 ever found a gal stone and diabetes was almost 00:13:56.77\00:13:59.95 unheard of in Zambia. And down in the, 00:13:59.96\00:14:04.69 and Lesotho where other hospital was, 00:14:04.96\00:14:07.77 they could get more of the foods from across 00:14:08.36\00:14:10.36 the borders, so they had more oil and had 00:14:10.37\00:14:12.97 more sugar and refined products in their 00:14:12.98\00:14:15.12 diet, but not a lot, so we didn't see a lot. 00:14:15.13\00:14:17.29 The thing when I got back here you know, 00:14:17.73\00:14:19.43 I started looking at the patients and they 00:14:19.95\00:14:21.79 came in with obvious heart disease. 00:14:21.80\00:14:24.27 I mean you could see somebody walking along 00:14:24.28\00:14:28.19 and they were, they couldn't breathe and 00:14:28.20\00:14:30.45 you look down at their ankles and they were 00:14:30.79\00:14:32.40 swollen and a lot of them had diabetes. 00:14:32.41\00:14:36.68 That's one of their biggest causes of 00:14:36.69\00:14:38.72 coronary artery disease and I kept thinking 00:14:38.73\00:14:41.69 you know, I've got to tell these people what 00:14:41.70\00:14:44.51 the Africans are doing, so that they could do 00:14:44.52\00:14:46.49 the same thing. And I've been here almost 20 00:14:46.50\00:14:51.11 years now and the more I see lifestyle, 00:14:51.12\00:14:54.84 the more I see what exercise is huge. 00:14:54.85\00:14:57.56 That's the biggest thing that you can possibly 00:14:57.57\00:14:59.38 do, that will give you courage to do everything 00:14:59.39\00:15:01.74 else, you'll start feeling good. 00:15:01.75\00:15:03.20 And you have got to have the diet and 00:15:03.54\00:15:05.95 that's so the two main things that the Africans 00:15:05.96\00:15:08.40 had that were different. They didn't have 00:15:08.41\00:15:10.37 any transportation, they had to walk and 00:15:10.38\00:15:13.33 sometimes the old who would put on wares, 00:15:13.34\00:15:16.30 you know fruits and vegetables, 00:15:16.81\00:15:18.58 and she had walked 10 kilometers to the put it 00:15:18.59\00:15:21.62 in this tangent and walked 10 kilometers 00:15:21.63\00:15:23.49 to the market and then 10 kilometers back. 00:15:24.38\00:15:26.75 That's, you know that's 12 plus miles in one 00:15:26.87\00:15:31.77 day and then all the greens that they ate. 00:15:31.78\00:15:34.18 They just didn't have any osteoporosis either. 00:15:34.19\00:15:36.44 So I am thinking how can I help the people 00:15:36.96\00:15:39.41 here to do this. And it turns out that we can, 00:15:39.42\00:15:43.99 when they, I saw people come 00:15:44.92\00:15:46.52 in a wheelchair or on oxygen. 00:15:46.53\00:15:48.76 Five different medications for their 00:15:49.19\00:15:51.86 blood pressure and literally from Monday 00:15:52.26\00:15:57.22 when we first see them until Thursday when we 00:15:57.23\00:16:02.14 see them the second time, we may have to 00:16:02.15\00:16:04.33 take them off of 2, 3, 4. Sometimes even all of 00:16:04.34\00:16:07.93 their hypertensive medications as they 00:16:07.94\00:16:10.13 can't stand up. Why is this happening? 00:16:10.14\00:16:12.76 While one of the biggest and best things 00:16:13.79\00:16:15.35 that I ever found about was from Dr. Crainer, 00:16:15.36\00:16:18.24 a researcher here. The tiny little 00:16:18.25\00:16:20.30 blood vessels that are only a diameter, 00:16:20.31\00:16:23.44 three red blood cells and that's tiny, 00:16:23.45\00:16:26.67 tiny there is. It's only 18 microns per red blood 00:16:26.68\00:16:29.50 cell, they dilate up to the diameter of 4 red 00:16:29.51\00:16:33.37 blood cells and that's like taking out a 00:16:33.38\00:16:36.35 plugged up filter. So when you do that 00:16:36.36\00:16:39.80 the pressure drops dramatically and the 00:16:40.58\00:16:42.97 flow increases, so where does that flow go? 00:16:42.98\00:16:45.97 It goes into the brain, goes into the heart, 00:16:46.45\00:16:48.93 it goes into the kidneys. I can't remember, 00:16:49.33\00:16:52.18 I think Gloria was the first one that came and 00:16:52.86\00:16:55.57 she had everything wrong with her, 00:16:56.43\00:16:58.20 she came in an RV. She was too sick to sit up 00:16:58.21\00:17:01.88 and her blood urea nitrogen was in the high 00:17:02.70\00:17:06.07 90s and I said Gloria, why aren't you on dialysis. 00:17:06.08\00:17:08.82 She said because I have congestive heart failure, 00:17:09.24\00:17:11.32 I didn't think that I could do it. 00:17:11.70\00:17:12.97 She was ready for dialysis and we 00:17:13.35\00:17:16.05 followed her for 7 years she never 00:17:16.07\00:17:18.54 had to have dialysis. And some people the 00:17:18.55\00:17:22.94 most dramatic one, even was this year, 00:17:22.95\00:17:25.20 I saw somebody with such terrible congestive 00:17:25.80\00:17:30.61 heart failure and it had only been 00:17:30.62\00:17:32.09 since last November. November of '07, 00:17:32.10\00:17:35.01 didn't even know he had a heart disease. 00:17:35.51\00:17:37.02 He had put on 40 pounds of water 00:17:37.68\00:17:42.31 congested in his lungs, you can push your 00:17:42.89\00:17:45.21 fingers into his abdomen leaves, 00:17:45.22\00:17:47.14 leaves dense in his abdomen. 00:17:47.76\00:17:49.29 In fact he went to wearing bib overalls, 00:17:49.74\00:17:51.81 because he couldn't put his pants on anymore. 00:17:52.44\00:17:54.56 And while he was here we weighed him on a 00:17:54.97\00:17:56.78 very accurate scale, he lost 40 pounds of water. 00:17:56.95\00:18:00.97 That's, I've never seen it, couldn't even 00:18:00.98\00:18:02.92 imagine something like that and he got his life back. 00:18:02.93\00:18:06.13 Before he left and walking from the clinic 00:18:06.14\00:18:08.94 which is just a short distance up to the lodge, 00:18:08.95\00:18:11.37 took him 20 minutes when they decided to do it. 00:18:11.70\00:18:14.17 And at the end of the time he was off of most 00:18:14.83\00:18:17.34 of his medications and he was able to walk 00:18:17.35\00:18:19.80 slowly for a mile. I mean that's a miracle 00:18:19.81\00:18:23.29 and people see that happen and they start 00:18:23.89\00:18:25.59 praising God because they know 00:18:25.60\00:18:27.58 that it is his program. They know that they are 00:18:28.07\00:18:31.12 doing the right thing, they know that this is 00:18:31.13\00:18:33.35 the truth and they know that his policies. 00:18:33.36\00:18:36.43 He said if you will give you to my 00:18:36.44\00:18:38.77 commandments, if you will keep my statues, 00:18:38.78\00:18:41.99 none of these diseases be upon you because 00:18:42.71\00:18:46.45 I am the Lord your God who healeth thee. 00:18:46.46\00:18:49.23 And you know what we do here is not doctor, 00:18:50.06\00:18:53.87 doctor stuff, we're primarily cheerleaders 00:18:53.88\00:18:56.61 and we see these people and they're rejoicing 00:18:57.55\00:18:59.82 and we're encouraging them on. 00:18:59.83\00:19:01.26 Doc, would you say there was a common 00:19:01.92\00:19:04.01 denominator with all these diseases that 00:19:04.02\00:19:07.25 that you're looking at here at the Newstart program? 00:19:09.05\00:19:11.24 Well, you know there's only one diet that the 00:19:11.97\00:19:14.59 Lord ever said was the perfect and that was the 00:19:14.60\00:19:16.35 eating diet and that's whole plant foods. 00:19:16.36\00:19:20.41 Eating whole simply and naturally prepared 00:19:21.01\00:19:23.39 and then the exercise, I mean that's what we 00:19:23.93\00:19:25.55 were supposed to do you know. 00:19:25.56\00:19:26.89 We're suppose to be gardeners, 00:19:27.50\00:19:28.84 we're supposed to do all kinds of wonderful 00:19:28.85\00:19:32.25 activities and we see it very, very quickly, 00:19:32.26\00:19:37.18 I know we're almost out of time, but I have a 00:19:37.19\00:19:39.62 classmate in Southern California and she is 00:19:39.63\00:19:43.75 pediatrician, that means she doesn't have any 18 00:19:43.76\00:19:46.12 year olds, everybody is younger than that and 00:19:46.13\00:19:48.10 she says she has 200 people in her clinic that 00:19:48.11\00:19:52.47 have type two diabetes. That's the one we used 00:19:52.48\00:19:55.48 to say for older people maturity-onset, 00:19:55.49\00:19:58.38 overweight, lack of exercise and she says 00:19:58.56\00:20:01.85 we can control their diabetes but we can't 00:20:01.86\00:20:04.57 stop their heart attacks when 00:20:04.58\00:20:05.76 they're 30 years of age. She said they're gonna 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.30 start having heart attacks and we're gonna 00:20:08.31\00:20:09.81 lose them, that's how bad it 00:20:09.82\00:20:12.24 is we got to do something. 00:20:12.25\00:20:13.59 We've got to change and people don't 00:20:14.40\00:20:16.77 know about it, medicine and insulin, 00:20:16.78\00:20:20.56 the pills in the insulin. As far as diabetes is 00:20:20.57\00:20:24.29 concerned, hands down lifestyle wins over it. 00:20:24.30\00:20:27.23 Is there something that the folks, the viewers 00:20:28.24\00:20:30.47 can do on their own right now, today? 00:20:30.48\00:20:33.39 Right now, get up every day and walk for 10 00:20:33.40\00:20:37.77 minutes and do that twice a day, doesn't 00:20:37.78\00:20:42.05 matter when you do it, if you go from very low 00:20:42.06\00:20:46.18 physical fitness and you will walk 15 minutes 00:20:46.19\00:20:50.50 twice a day or do 30 minutes, 00:20:50.51\00:20:53.65 several days of the week. 00:20:55.18\00:20:56.15 Most days of the week, your level of 00:20:56.46\00:20:58.36 fitness like this very low, 00:20:58.37\00:20:59.99 it'll just go up just like that. 00:21:00.00\00:21:01.39 Wow. Tremendous, start with the exercise 00:21:02.15\00:21:05.35 and you're gonna start feeling better and you're 00:21:05.36\00:21:07.42 gonna have courage to you know leave that 00:21:07.43\00:21:10.09 junk food behind and eat more of those fruits 00:21:10.81\00:21:13.88 and veggies and God is there to help you and he 00:21:13.89\00:21:17.61 is gonna do it, he is gonna help you. 00:21:17.62\00:21:19.34 Well Dr. Lukens, I wanna thank you for 00:21:20.66\00:21:22.85 joining us today. We're glad you're with 00:21:59.23\00:22:00.81 us and we're gonna be talking about the heart 00:22:00.82\00:22:02.66 today and heart disease and joining me is 00:22:02.67\00:22:04.98 Dr. Brian Schwartz, currently in Ohio. 00:22:04.99\00:22:07.84 We're glad you are with us and you are a 00:22:07.85\00:22:08.86 cardiologist which means you look at the 00:22:08.87\00:22:10.77 heart everyday. That's right. 00:22:10.78\00:22:12.07 Thanks for joining us first of all. 00:22:12.76\00:22:13.96 You're welcome. And we're gonna talk today 00:22:13.97\00:22:16.10 about heart disease but you know people out 00:22:16.11\00:22:18.75 there; there's a lot of people that have heart 00:22:18.76\00:22:20.38 disease in America. How many would you 00:22:20.39\00:22:21.72 say there are? More than 100 million 00:22:21.73\00:22:24.81 have some form of heart disease, 1 out of 5 adults. 00:22:24.82\00:22:27.90 So another word for those 1 out of 5 there 00:22:28.07\00:22:29.75 are watching today or know someone has 00:22:29.76\00:22:31.57 heart disease, is it possible to stop or 00:22:31.58\00:22:34.24 reverse it? Now that's a good question, 00:22:34.25\00:22:36.30 so much of modern American medicine is 00:22:36.31\00:22:38.14 focused on just treating the signs and the 00:22:38.15\00:22:39.86 symptoms and in fact when I went through 00:22:39.87\00:22:43.55 my training it wasn't thought to be possible 00:22:43.56\00:22:45.82 to reverse the process, it takes 40, 50, 60 years to 00:22:45.83\00:22:49.28 develop the plaque that leads to heart attacks 00:22:49.29\00:22:51.13 and to heart disease but recently some studies 00:22:51.14\00:22:54.04 have shown great promise, that the ability 00:22:54.05\00:22:57.05 to actually start reversing the plaque 00:22:57.06\00:22:58.52 that's in the arteries. So it could be stopped 00:22:58.53\00:23:00.55 and it could be reversed, well give us 00:23:00.56\00:23:02.21 some more good news doctor, what can we do 00:23:02.22\00:23:03.73 to see that happen? Absolutely, so first of 00:23:03.74\00:23:07.31 all because it is a very slow process to develop 00:23:07.32\00:23:09.42 plaque in the arteries it's not going to go away 00:23:09.43\00:23:11.10 with overnight. But the good news is if you can 00:23:11.11\00:23:13.32 reverse the plaque it's in there by even 5 or 10 % 00:23:13.33\00:23:16.58 that can dramatically improve the amount of 00:23:16.59\00:23:18.41 blood flow that goes through the heart. 00:23:18.42\00:23:19.76 And so studies have shown that by being on 00:23:20.29\00:23:23.54 a very low fat diet, by exercising and 00:23:23.55\00:23:27.67 reversing the risk factors such as control 00:23:27.68\00:23:29.88 diabetes, obesity and lack of exercise. 00:23:29.89\00:23:32.44 By getting the LDL cholesterol down to 00:23:33.44\00:23:35.48 extremely low levels, levels that used to be 00:23:35.49\00:23:37.85 considered unhealthy. So, LDL's the lousy 00:23:37.86\00:23:40.43 density proteins that's the bad stuff. 00:23:40.69\00:23:42.61 That's right. Right. LDL yes is the bad 00:23:42.62\00:23:45.62 cholesterol that leads to plaque in the arteries. 00:23:45.63\00:23:47.37 So by getting that down, then what happens? 00:23:47.38\00:23:49.98 It can actually start to absorb the cholesterol 00:23:51.69\00:23:53.94 plaque that's in the arteries and gradually 00:23:53.95\00:23:55.69 those arteries can open back up and expand. 00:23:55.70\00:23:58.00 Now someone told me that the real issue with 00:23:58.87\00:24:00.65 heart disease is the nitric oxide at the tissue 00:24:00.66\00:24:03.71 level right there, right next to the, you know 00:24:03.72\00:24:06.87 the, what you call the surface. 00:24:06.88\00:24:09.07 The Endothelium, the lining of the heart. 00:24:09.08\00:24:10.07 The lining of those vessels is that true? 00:24:10.08\00:24:12.04 That nitric oxide plays a very important role in 00:24:12.76\00:24:15.58 the regulation of normal capillary and blood 00:24:15.59\00:24:18.73 vessel flow but as plaque develops 00:24:18.74\00:24:21.79 that impairs the ability to release nitric oxide 00:24:22.24\00:24:24.97 and so the more plaque in an artery, the more 00:24:25.42\00:24:28.03 impaired that is and it doesn't 00:24:28.04\00:24:29.53 have as much effect. And but if you reverse 00:24:29.54\00:24:31.80 it, can it start coming back, 00:24:31.81\00:24:32.98 you get more nitric oxide? 00:24:32.99\00:24:34.41 Studies are just beginning to look 00:24:35.87\00:24:36.97 on that level to show that but I would expect 00:24:36.98\00:24:40.47 that as the plaque reverses that the 00:24:40.48\00:24:43.06 capillary flow is gonna improve, the overall 00:24:43.07\00:24:44.86 flow to the heart tissue itself is gonna improve 00:24:44.87\00:24:46.94 and even a very slight change in the amount of 00:24:47.54\00:24:49.86 blood that gets through, that can be a big 00:24:49.87\00:24:51.96 improvement to the symptoms that 00:24:51.97\00:24:53.74 a patient may have. So, you can stop it and 00:24:53.75\00:24:57.20 you can reverse it through you've said diet 00:24:57.21\00:24:59.70 and some of the lifestyle things anything else 00:24:59.96\00:25:01.83 that can help us? Yeah, a big trial 00:25:01.84\00:25:03.48 in the cardiology literature about 2 years 00:25:03.49\00:25:06.11 ago was the Asteroid trial. 00:25:06.12\00:25:07.80 Asteroid sounds out of this world, 00:25:08.33\00:25:09.61 what was that one? It did, we actually 00:25:09.62\00:25:11.20 took a little ultrasound probes that could study 00:25:11.21\00:25:13.85 the lining of the heart to see where those plaques 00:25:13.86\00:25:15.97 were, it measured a group of patients that 00:25:15.98\00:25:18.68 were on a heart healthy diet as well as the 00:25:18.69\00:25:20.97 potent cholesterol lowering in medications 00:25:20.98\00:25:22.81 and that was the first large scale study that 00:25:22.82\00:25:25.18 could, that proved that you can reverse as 00:25:25.19\00:25:29.10 much as 7% in the two year period the volume 00:25:29.11\00:25:32.06 of plaque in those arteries. Just by diet? 00:25:32.07\00:25:35.35 By diet in a potent cholesterol medication 00:25:35.97\00:25:38.14 in that study. So you get that done 00:25:38.15\00:25:39.57 rapidly and then you change your diet and it 00:25:39.58\00:25:42.45 just have amazing result. It can have very 00:25:42.46\00:25:44.15 amazing effects. Can someone become 00:25:44.16\00:25:46.84 heart attack proof? You can do absolutely 00:25:46.85\00:25:51.22 everything right and still possibly have a 00:25:51.23\00:25:53.39 heart attack there is no guarantee, it's dealing 00:25:53.40\00:25:56.55 with probabilities but the more you put these 00:25:56.56\00:25:58.83 lifestyle factors in the practice, know your 00:25:58.84\00:26:01.38 cholesterol, make sure your blood pressure is 00:26:01.39\00:26:02.94 controlled, control obesity, exercise, be on 00:26:02.95\00:26:05.79 a good diet. It becomes a much less likely to 00:26:05.80\00:26:09.20 have a heart attack. Any final word on terms 00:26:09.21\00:26:12.06 of stopping or reversing that you'd like to add. 00:26:12.07\00:26:14.17 Basically the, you should get your 00:26:15.31\00:26:18.74 cholesterol checked at least once a year and 00:26:18.75\00:26:20.42 know your blood pressure, know your 00:26:20.43\00:26:21.72 cholesterol numbers and do what's necessary 00:26:21.73\00:26:25.14 to get that LDL, less than 70, the HTL up 00:26:25.15\00:26:28.29 about 45 all though ideally it should be the 00:26:28.30\00:26:30.71 higher the better, up above 60. 00:26:30.72\00:26:32.10 With exercise you can do that. 00:26:32.33\00:26:33.49 With exercise it will go up, certain foods, 00:26:33.50\00:26:35.96 particularly a plant based diet and if 00:26:35.97\00:26:37.83 necessary a cholesterol lowing medication can 00:26:37.84\00:26:40.22 have a big affect. So, good news you can 00:26:40.23\00:26:42.54 stop and even reverse heart disease, 00:26:42.55\00:26:46.31 the evidence is coming in.
