い 00:00:04.80\00:00:13.71 い >> We invite you to 00:00:13.74\00:00:17.05 stay standing for our first song. 00:00:17.05\00:00:18.85 い >> We would like to introduce 00:00:18.85\00:03:29.50 a new song based on Revelation 19:6. 00:03:29.50\00:03:33.24 And as we sing this chorus through once, we invite you 00:03:33.24\00:03:35.78 to join us the second time and enjoy the words 00:03:35.78\00:03:39.71 that one day, we will see the Lord Almighty reigning. 00:03:39.71\00:03:43.25 い 00:03:43.25\00:03:48.96 >> The scripture reading this morning is from 00:08:34.18\00:08:36.91 Second Corinthians 10:3-5. "For though we live 00:08:36.91\00:08:40.58 in the world, we do not wage war 00:08:40.58\00:08:42.65 as the world does. The weapons we fight with are 00:08:42.65\00:08:45.49 not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, 00:08:45.49\00:08:48.19 they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 00:08:48.19\00:08:51.16 We demolish arguments and every pretenses that's set itself up 00:08:51.16\00:08:55.50 against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every 00:08:55.50\00:08:58.33 thought to make it obedient to Christ." 00:08:58.33\00:09:08.31 い 00:09:08.41\00:09:11.91 い 00:09:12.01\00:09:15.65 >> At the name of Jesus. every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth, under the earth, 00:13:23.37\00:13:33.11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father. 00:13:33.11\00:13:42.25 How about an amen to that? The day's coming. It's coming. Let 00:13:42.25\00:13:48.16 us pray. Oh, God, our knees are bowed up here, we are bowed low 00:13:48.16\00:13:56.33 before you. It is the living Christ who is present through 00:13:56.33\00:14:00.10 the mighty spirit. Let Him be seen and heard. Hide the noises inside of us and around us. 00:14:00.10\00:14:06.81 Hold our attention with his eyes, we pray, in his name, 00:14:06.81\00:14:16.25 amen. As we wrap up the series that ends right now -- I have an 00:14:16.25\00:14:22.32 on-again-off-again series this semester on purity, sexual purity. Blessed are the pure in 00:14:22.32\00:14:28.40 heart. Sexual addiction. I'm want to read 00:14:28.43\00:14:31.77 three emails to you and then tell three stories, 00:14:31.77\00:14:33.74 and then I'll sit down. Okay, so here we go. 00:14:33.74\00:14:36.44 Email number one. 00:14:36.47\00:14:37.64 "Pastor Nelson, as a recovering pornography addict myself, 00:14:37.67\00:14:42.14 I can attest to its dangers and the difficulty 00:14:42.14\00:14:45.28 in experiencing freedom. You were absolutely correct 00:14:45.28\00:14:48.02 when you said you cannot break this yourself. 00:14:48.02\00:14:50.35 I certainly could not. I finally found a path 00:14:50.35\00:14:54.12 to recovery." We'll take a look 00:14:54.12\00:14:56.16 at that in a moment. Email number two. 00:14:56.16\00:14:59.33 "Pastor, God has blessed me with 36 continuous years of 00:14:59.33\00:15:05.23 sobriety with drugs and alcohol." 00:15:05.23\00:15:07.70 Time out. Wait a minute. 00:15:07.70\00:15:10.11 You're saying, this is not a series on drugs and alcohol, This is on sexual addiction. 00:15:10.14\00:15:14.31 And guess what? An addiction is an addiction. What works for one 00:15:14.31\00:15:20.45 will work for the other. And by the way, we're all addicted. 00:15:20.45\00:15:23.82 And the most potent addiction is what you have and what I have, the addiction to ego and self. 00:15:23.82\00:15:30.63 One more email. "I am addicted to smoking vapes." 00:15:30.63\00:15:38.33 That's an electronic cigarette that produces a vapor. You become addicted to nicotine. 00:15:38.33\00:15:44.61 "I'm addicted to smoking vapes. I spend time with Jesus every 00:15:44.61\00:15:48.21 morning, and I have literally wept for deliverance from this addiction, and I can't unlock 00:15:48.21\00:15:53.18 these handcuffs. Please pray for me. I desperately want to be 00:15:53.18\00:15:58.42 in the kingdom and I know I will be shut out unless I have been 00:15:58.42\00:16:02.82 freed from this. Please help me." I want to say to you, young 00:16:02.82\00:16:08.96 man -- or not so young man, whoever you are. Thank you for that vulnerability and that 00:16:08.96\00:16:18.57 transparency. By the time we're through here this morning, I pray that you have in your hands 00:16:18.57\00:16:25.18 what you've asked for. 00:16:25.18\00:16:26.78 Three e-mails. There they are. Three stories. Here we go. Story 00:16:29.92\00:16:34.69 number one. Once upon a time, Jesus went to church and an 00:16:34.69\00:16:38.69 impure spirit went to church with him. I never knew impure spirits went to church. 00:16:38.69\00:16:42.53 It's possible there's an impure spirit right here, right now. 00:16:42.53\00:16:48.44 Because in the middle of Jesus' homily, a worshiper jumps to his 00:16:48.44\00:16:53.78 feet and starts screaming. Imagine the cold-blooded chill 00:16:53.78\00:17:00.28 in that packed Capernaum worship space. Oh, let's go to the story and put it on the screen 00:17:00.28\00:17:07.16 for you here, Luke 4. Here we go. Luke 4. 00:17:07.16\00:17:11.53 Just hit the pause button right there. You know what, I'm glad 00:17:20.37\00:17:25.24 what modern translations have done. The archaic King James calls it an unclean spirit. 00:17:25.24\00:17:29.98 They have a hard time with that one, but contemporary 00:17:29.98\00:17:33.31 translations render that "impure spirit," the perfect way to phrase it for a culture that is 00:17:33.31\00:17:39.35 possessed by impurity today. And a man filled with an impure 00:17:39.35\00:17:45.76 spirit jumps up. Come on, we don't need to be reminded, but let me do so anyway. 00:17:45.76\00:17:49.83 Once upon a time -- Once upon a longer ago time, one third of 00:17:49.83\00:17:53.50 the angels in heaven said "No way, Jose," to the King of 00:17:53.50\00:17:58.31 Angels, and they were expelled from heaven, cast out into this 00:17:58.31\00:18:02.48 earth. And when Adam and Eve come to that tree and they choose the dark lordship of the 00:18:02.48\00:18:06.55 fallen Lucifer, the induction into his Lordship is addiction -- every single time, 00:18:06.55\00:18:11.92 it's addiction. What was that third e-mail? "I'm addicted to 00:18:11.92\00:18:18.06 smoking vapes. I spend time with Jesus every morning, and I have 00:18:18.06\00:18:21.43 literally wept for deliverance from this addiction, and I can't unlock these handcuffs." 00:18:21.43\00:18:25.97 I'm telling you. "Please pray for me. I desperately want to be 00:18:25.97\00:18:30.31 in the kingdom and I know I will be shut out unless I've been 00:18:30.31\00:18:33.81 freed from this. Please help me." That's what that impure spirit-filled man is crying out. 00:18:33.81\00:18:40.62 "Please help me." He can't even word it. The spirit speaks 00:18:40.62\00:18:46.09 inside of him. Only the physician, Luke, adds that phrase, "without injuring him." 00:19:17.95\00:19:25.73 Some of you might be spooked with this idea of sexual 00:19:25.73\00:19:29.16 addiction being some sort of demonic possession. You mean I've got demonic warfare going 00:19:29.16\00:19:34.70 on inside of me? Listen, point one -- no need to be spooked. 00:19:34.70\00:19:39.41 Point two -- no need to be duped either. Duped into thinking, this addiction is no big deal. 00:19:39.41\00:19:44.81 I get it. I'll get rid of it when I'm ready to get rid of it 00:19:44.81\00:19:47.52 and not a day before. Wrong. No, no, no, no. 00:19:47.52\00:19:53.42 This is a deadly battle. I don't have to remind you, this verse, 00:19:53.42\00:19:57.33 Ephesians 6:12. Pretty graphic and pretty clear, but it's just as dramatic for the flip side of 00:20:09.64\00:20:14.68 the coin, the side of God. Oh, love this Proverbs 18:10. You remember this verse? 00:20:14.68\00:20:19.61 What's that word? Safe. You don't have to be spooked. This is a war, to the death, 00:20:25.72\00:20:34.30 but you can be safe. And as we're finding out, you can get 00:20:34.30\00:20:42.04 delivered. Without injuring you, by the way. Now, hold on. 00:20:42.04\00:20:45.71 Giving up what is killing you will not hurt you at all. Give 00:20:45.71\00:20:54.75 it up. Let me have a hallelujah for that ending. And they come 00:21:05.13\00:21:09.66 out. They come out. You are not hopelessly -- you are not 00:21:09.66\00:21:15.10 hopelessly bound in this bondage, and it doesn't matter what your addiction is. 00:21:15.10\00:21:18.04 Is it vaping? Is it sex? Is it food? Is it gambling? What is 00:21:18.04\00:21:22.14 it? It doesn't matter what it is. They come out with this same 00:21:22.14\00:21:29.92 Jesus. My, oh, my, oh, my. The compelling question is, how do 00:21:29.92\00:21:35.22 they come out? So that's why we need story number two, okay? So that's story number one. 00:21:35.22\00:21:38.03 Here we go to story number two, Jesus is in trouble, because he has been driving out 00:21:38.03\00:21:42.00 the demonic forces that have been holding the culture of his 00:21:42.00\00:21:46.17 day hostage, just as the culture of our day is being held hostage by an impure spirit. 00:21:46.17\00:21:51.81 The authorities are jealous of this popular young liberator to whom people are turning, 00:21:51.81\00:21:57.21 not realizing the authorities, that they are possessed with a darker spirit themselves. 00:21:57.21\00:22:03.62 So I'm going to put this on the screen for you. I want you to go 00:22:03.62\00:22:07.66 in your Bible the old-fashioned way. Find Luke 11. It's been so 00:22:07.66\00:22:11.03 long since you've opened a Bible, that's in the New Testament, just to help you. 00:22:11.03\00:22:13.90 Luke 11. Drop down to verse 14. I'm gonna just read it 00:22:13.90\00:22:18.57 right here. Here's another story. This isn't story number 00:22:18.57\00:22:21.97 two, though. Jesus will tell us story number two. 00:22:21.97\00:22:24.87 This is verse 14. "Jesus was driving out a demon that was 00:22:24.87\00:22:29.14 mute, and when the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 00:22:29.14\00:22:33.18 But some of them said, Oh, by Beelzebub, the Prince of Demons, 00:22:33.18\00:22:37.89 he's driving out demons.' Others tested him by asking for a sign 00:22:37.89\00:22:41.92 from heaven, and Jesus knew their thoughts. And he said to them --" Here's verse 17. 00:22:41.92\00:22:45.49 "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a 00:22:45.49\00:22:50.27 house divided against itself will fall. Look, if Satan is divided against himself, 00:22:50.27\00:22:55.17 how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I 00:22:55.17\00:22:58.67 drive out demons by Beelzebub, another name for Satan. Now, if 00:22:58.67\00:23:02.24 I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive 00:23:02.24\00:23:06.72 them out? So then they will be your judges." And now here it 00:23:06.72\00:23:09.28 comes. Oh, I love this verse 20. "But if I drive out demons by 00:23:09.28\00:23:15.89 the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." That is so good, I'm 00:23:15.89\00:23:21.26 putting it right on the screen. 00:23:21.26\00:23:21.86 I say, let the word go out that the Kingdom of God has come upon Andrews University. 00:23:32.57\00:23:39.11 Let the word go out that the Kingdom of God has come upon the Pioneer Memorial Church. 00:23:39.11\00:23:44.55 That the Kingdom of God has come to stand at your heart's 00:23:44.55\00:23:48.76 doorway, to stand at my heart's doorway, and when the kingdom of 00:23:48.76\00:23:55.23 God comes, there is a finger of God that will deliver. Oh, I 00:23:55.23\00:24:02.44 like that. Deliver us from our strongholds. There is one in our midst who can deliver us 00:24:02.44\00:24:06.84 from our strongholds. You say, "Dwight, what are these 00:24:06.84\00:24:09.78 strongholds? What are you talking about?" I'll tell you what the strongholds are. 00:24:09.78\00:24:12.91 Homoerotic behavior is a stronghold, but we can be 00:24:12.91\00:24:20.39 delivered from it. Pornography addiction is a stronghold, but we can be delivered from it. 00:24:20.39\00:24:25.56 Premarital sex is a stronghold, but you can be delivered from 00:24:25.56\00:24:28.80 it. Extra-marital sex is a stronghold. You can be delivered 00:24:28.80\00:24:35.87 from it. Dr. Neil Anderson, the noted Christian counselor in his book, "Victory Over Darkness," 00:24:35.87\00:24:40.71 defines a stronghold this way. This is good. 00:24:40.71\00:24:44.31 Keep reading. 00:24:53.69\00:24:54.79 Keep reading. 00:25:01.13\00:25:02.36 He says it's like driving an old, beat-up pickup truck. Anybody been on farm? 00:25:12.31\00:25:17.55 Country land? Of course. And it's old dirt road. If you're 00:25:17.55\00:25:22.05 driving that old, beat-up pickup truck up up and down the same pathway, the same road every 00:25:22.05\00:25:26.86 single day, dirt road guess what you're doing? You're building 00:25:26.86\00:25:30.33 ruts. And the longer you drive that same pathway, the deeper 00:25:30.33\00:25:35.63 the ruts go. And anybody who has driven, and I have, a road like that knows that when you 00:25:35.63\00:25:39.57 turn a little this way or you turn a little this way, guess 00:25:39.57\00:25:42.24 what? It doesn't work. You don't move. You have to yank 00:25:42.24\00:25:45.21 that steering wheel, boom, to get out of that rut, or you're 00:25:45.21\00:25:48.78 stuck in that rut for a long, long time. That, Dr. Anderson says, it's what a stronghold 00:25:48.78\00:25:57.12 does, embeds the ruts deep. He goes on with this definition. 00:25:57.12\00:26:01.86 Now, hold on here. This is something important. We all have 00:26:15.80\00:26:21.34 some trauma in our past, I'm sure of it. Can't live on this planet and not have trauma, 00:26:21.34\00:26:26.28 but some of us have faced more. And I'll be the first to 00:26:26.28\00:26:30.19 recognize this. Some of you have faced more traumatic trauma than others. What are you talking 00:26:30.19\00:26:37.99 about? Well... 00:26:37.99\00:26:40.86 Watch this. 00:27:03.08\00:27:04.35 That's why I'm telling you we must not judge one another. I have no clue what you're 00:27:14.93\00:27:22.44 going through, and you have no clue what's in my past. And when I sit high and mighty 00:27:22.44\00:27:27.71 on that lifted-up chair and I'm clucking my tongue at you, I'm 00:27:27.71\00:27:32.25 doing a huge disservice to you. And I mean, I am describing, telling the truth about me. 00:27:32.25\00:27:37.72 Jesus says, Judge not that you be not judged. You'll be judged 00:27:37.72\00:27:39.99 by that same standard. You have no idea what that girl has gone 00:27:39.99\00:27:43.26 through. Look at you. You got to get over this, girl. You got to get over this, boy. 00:27:43.26\00:27:48.60 Trauma has happened, and sexual addiction and other addictions are responses to trauma. 00:27:48.60\00:27:57.47 I asked a friend of mine who has been battling pornography 00:27:57.47\00:28:06.01 addiction to write a description here of how he got into it. Let 00:28:06.01\00:28:13.32 me read it to you. "Through prayer, counseling, and resources on pornography 00:28:13.32\00:28:16.69 addiction, I have realized that the root cause of why I and many become addicted is loneliness. 00:28:16.69\00:28:22.40 Loneliness is a lack of real connection and relationship with 00:28:22.40\00:28:26.47 God and others in your life. I can't say exactly how or a 00:28:26.47\00:28:29.97 specific time when I turned to pornography, but I do recall feeling lonely from my teenage 00:28:29.97\00:28:35.54 years." My friend has been addicted for decades. He goes 00:28:35.54\00:28:40.02 on. "The problem with pornography addiction is that it offers a false connection 00:28:40.02\00:28:44.62 that satisfies temporary feelings of loneliness, but only 00:28:44.62\00:28:49.12 further separates a person from God and others. It's kind of this vicious cycle, the feelings 00:28:49.12\00:28:53.19 of shame and never-ending guilt, even after confession, lead to hiding who you really 00:28:53.19\00:28:57.43 are from even the closest people in your life." Some of our 00:28:57.43\00:29:04.37 strongholds are defense mechanisms to shield us from hurt, to comfort us from 00:29:04.37\00:29:08.54 loneliness, as we just heard, to provide for us an intimacy we 00:29:08.54\00:29:12.91 never experienced as kids growing up. I understand that. Mental habit patterns 00:29:12.91\00:29:18.59 burn their ruts into our minds and then our souls, but it was 00:29:18.59\00:29:22.46 trauma that started it. It was that igniting. And we can't 00:29:22.46\00:29:26.93 break free. We want to be free, but we can't break free. The good news is we can. 00:29:26.93\00:29:31.27 We can. Don't bail out now. In fact, Jesus describes our 00:29:31.27\00:29:37.74 desperation with story number two, and we're going to read it here. If we kept going in 00:29:37.74\00:29:42.34 this passage, I'm going to go back to the screen here. Here's 00:29:42.34\00:29:45.61 story number two. That's a no-brainer, right? Sure. Keep 00:29:51.15\00:29:53.49 reading. The end. It's a short story. The only way -- listen, listen. The only way a strong 00:30:03.00\00:30:10.04 man can be conquered, Jesus reminds us, is if an even 00:30:10.04\00:30:15.24 stronger man, capital M, Man, comes along to bind the strong man that has been binding us. 00:30:15.24\00:30:21.75 Does this make sense? Are you following it? Are you? 00:30:21.75\00:30:28.69 Because of our submission to the dark Lordship of Lucifer, whether it's trauma-induced 00:30:28.69\00:30:33.16 or not, we no longer have an innate power to throw off 00:30:33.16\00:30:38.60 Satan's bondage. That's the truth. Our only hope is for a strong, strong man, 00:30:38.60\00:30:43.81 a stronger strong man to bind the weaker strong man who has 00:30:43.81\00:30:50.51 been binding us. That's what Jesus is saying. That's why Paul comes along in our scripture 00:30:50.51\00:30:55.42 reading we had just a moment ago and reminds us we have access to 00:30:55.42\00:31:00.22 super power un this battle we've engaged. Oh, boy. Calvary. "And 00:31:00.22\00:31:04.46 having disarmed the powers and authorities, Jesus made a public spectacle of these impure 00:31:04.46\00:31:10.33 spirits, triumphing over them by the cross." And that's why we 00:31:10.33\00:31:15.30 heard 2 Corinthians: 10:4-5 -- "The weapons --" Paul's reminding us -- "The 00:31:15.30\00:31:19.67 weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the 00:31:19.67\00:31:22.98 contrary, they have divine power --" The root word is dynamite. "They have divine power 00:31:22.98\00:31:27.38 to demolish strongholds." Now, keep reading. "We demolish 00:31:27.38\00:31:31.75 arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the 00:31:31.75\00:31:37.09 knowledge of God." And here it comes. "We take captive every thought to make it obedient to 00:31:37.09\00:31:43.10 Christ," end quote. Demolish strongholds means we can 00:31:43.10\00:31:50.74 demolish these terrible ruts that we've ground into our minds 00:31:50.74\00:31:56.18 by our repetitious and addictive behavior. Guess what? They call 00:31:56.18\00:31:59.35 it this marvelous capacity the creator is put in our brains -- 00:31:59.35\00:32:01.98 it's called plasticity. That means your brain can actually 00:32:01.98\00:32:05.85 change. You can put these deep ruts into your brain. 00:32:05.85\00:32:07.96 But if you reverse your behavior, those ruts 00:32:07.99\00:32:11.29 can actually be effaced, physiologically and spiritually 00:32:11.29\00:32:15.63 can be effaced. Every neuroscientist will tell 00:32:15.63\00:32:19.53 you that. You're not stuck 00:32:19.53\00:32:21.40 by those ruts. You can create new pathways. 00:32:21.40\00:32:29.54 But Paul's writing -- "Oh, no, no, Dwight, Dwight. 00:32:29.54\00:32:32.31 You got to take every thought captive 00:32:32.31\00:32:35.78 and make it obedient to Christ. You got to start with that 00:32:35.78\00:32:40.29 thought," because it always starts with a single thought, 00:32:40.29\00:32:42.66 doesn't it? 00:32:42.66\00:32:44.09 There used to be a cartoon strip. You had to be a little 00:32:44.13\00:32:46.46 older to remember that cartoon strip. But it was called "Cathy". It's kind of a girl's 00:32:46.46\00:32:52.10 thing cartoon strip. So Cathy is -- I got the cartoon strip here. 00:32:52.10\00:32:57.11 Ten frames. Kathy is wanting to go for a drive, okay? 00:32:57.11\00:33:03.45 So here we go. Frame number one. "I will take a drive, but won't 00:33:03.45\00:33:07.25 go near the grocery store." Oh, now we know. We know what's 00:33:07.25\00:33:12.45 going on. Frame two -- "I will drive by the grocery store, but 00:33:12.45\00:33:16.99 will not go in." Frame three -- "I have a go in the grocery store, but will not walk down 00:33:16.99\00:33:20.66 the aisle where the Halloween candy is on sale." Frame four -- 00:33:20.66\00:33:27.30 "I will look at the candy, but not pick it up." Frame five -- 00:33:27.30\00:33:32.31 "I will pick it up, but not buy it." Frame six -- "I will buy it, but not open it." 00:33:32.31\00:33:35.61 Frame seven -- "I will open it, but not smell it." Frame eight 00:33:35.61\00:33:38.51 -- "Smell it, but not taste it." Frame nine -- "Taste it, but not 00:33:38.51\00:33:41.75 eat it." Frame ten -- "Eat, eat, eat, eat, eat." [ Laughter ] 00:33:41.75\00:33:46.39 Come on. That's exactly what happens. And you know it. 00:33:46.39\00:33:49.39 That's why you're laughing. It starts with a thought. And you 00:33:49.39\00:33:55.23 keep negotiating with that thought, right? Dr. Anderson commenting on this. "Cathy lost 00:33:55.23\00:34:01.50 the battle when she decided to go for a drive --" because she knew where she was going. 00:34:01.50\00:34:06.81 "If you don't take captive the initial thought, you will 00:34:06.81\00:34:11.11 probably lose the battle to temptation. We all have to learn how to practice threshold 00:34:11.11\00:34:16.99 thinking." I like that phrase. Threshold thinking. Before you 00:34:16.99\00:34:21.42 go in that room, think right here, think right here now. 00:34:21.42\00:34:24.59 Don't go in. Think here. We have to practice threshold thinking. 00:34:24.59\00:34:27.46 "We need to take the way of escape." Hey, what's that word, 00:34:27.46\00:34:31.07 escape? 1 Corinthians:10:13. "There is no temptation come to 00:34:31.07\00:34:34.90 you that is not common to the human race, but with every 00:34:34.90\00:34:38.04 temptation, God will provide a way of -- a way of escape." 00:34:38.04\00:34:41.91 That's the word. There's a way out. Go! Go. Vamoose. "We need to take away of escape 00:34:41.91\00:34:47.18 the moment our thoughts are contrary to the truth and 00:34:47.18\00:34:52.02 righteousness." Hmm. Which means, by the way, if you're 00:34:52.02\00:34:55.86 battling sexual purity, it would go like this. Anderson again on 00:34:55.86\00:35:02.10 the screen. "For example, a man struggling with lust sees a pornographic picture. 00:35:02.10\00:35:06.67 He has the opportunity to respond by thinking, 'My relationship with sin 00:35:06.67\00:35:10.81 has ended. I don't have to give in to this. I choose right now 00:35:10.81\00:35:15.44 to take this captive to the obedience of Christ. I'm not going to look at it and 00:35:15.44\00:35:21.02 I'm not going to think about it.' And he stops 00:35:21.02\00:35:23.28 looking at the picture. He gets rid of the magazine or shuts 00:35:23.28\00:35:26.65 down his device or leaves the place of temptation. If he 00:35:26.65\00:35:29.89 hesitates at the threshold --" looks back one more time, look 00:35:29.89\00:35:33.93 out, and "stares at that picture and begins to fantasize about it, he will trigger 00:35:33.93\00:35:37.77 an emotional landslide, producing a physical response that would be difficult to stop. 00:35:37.77\00:35:43.04 He must capture the initial tempting thought, or it will 00:35:43.04\00:35:49.38 probably capture him." That's a profound line. You either 00:35:49.38\00:35:54.85 capture that line, that thought, or it'll capture you. One of you 00:35:54.85\00:35:59.55 is going to be captured in this moment. Whoa. 00:35:59.55\00:36:06.16 And that's Paul's point. It's a huge point. The weapons of our 00:36:09.66\00:36:15.34 warfare have divine power to -- [imitates explosion] -- demolish 00:36:15.34\00:36:20.18 strongholds. If -- hold it -- if we will take captive every thought and make it obedient to 00:36:20.18\00:36:28.15 Christ, if we take captive our thoughts. You know what? Most 00:36:28.15\00:36:32.69 people -- This is true, isn't it? Most people conclude that sexual temptation is only for 00:36:32.69\00:36:36.62 the young or the middle aged. But a friend of mine the other day, we were talking 00:36:36.62\00:36:41.90 about this, and he said, "Dwight, you need to tell the 00:36:41.90\00:36:45.07 people, men can be in their seventies or even their eighties and still experience 00:36:45.07\00:36:50.07 the power of sexual temptation." And I said to him, "You know 00:36:50.07\00:36:56.98 what? I'm beginning to realize that I don't know where." I'm 00:36:56.98\00:37:02.15 sitting there, I'm standing there, I am minding my own business and -- [imitates 00:37:02.15\00:37:08.52 explosion] -- and I am so embarrassed. My Lord, Where did 00:37:08.52\00:37:14.46 this come from? I wasn't the thinking about it. It's got to be an impure spirit. Injects it 00:37:14.46\00:37:20.77 in. Poof. And I bow before God. How embarrassing. 00:37:20.77\00:37:25.37 But here's what I'm doing now. 00:37:25.37\00:37:26.98 Because you need to know -- Well, you already know this. Everything in our pornified 00:37:31.95\00:37:37.92 culture is gauged to plant the first thought in your brain. That's all the enemy asks. 00:37:37.92\00:37:47.50 "Give me that first thought. I'll breathe it. It'll be on a 00:37:47.50\00:37:51.70 billboard. You open a magazine, on your cable TV. Boom, boom, 00:37:51.70\00:37:56.30 boom. Everything is geared to get the first thought. And I'm 00:37:56.30\00:38:02.54 realizing, "Whoa --" hey, by the way, by the way, by the way, is it a sin to have that first 00:38:02.54\00:38:07.78 thought? The answer is no. It's not a sin. 00:38:07.78\00:38:11.15 I mean, you can't help it. [ Imitates explosion ] Like your mother used to say, 00:38:11.15\00:38:19.49 "You can't stop the birds from flying over your head." Right? 00:38:19.49\00:38:25.67 But then she said, "You can stop them from building a nest in 00:38:25.67\00:38:35.34 your hair." Get out of here. So here's what I do. Because I'm 00:38:35.34\00:38:43.89 not 80 yet. Here's what I do. The moment I see that thought, because I can see it 00:38:43.89\00:38:49.12 or sense it, the moment I do, I literally grab that thought and I run with it, because I 00:38:49.12\00:38:57.33 have a cross that's in my mind. I can see the cross and Jesus is hanging on the cross 00:38:57.33\00:39:02.17 and I run to the cross and I grab a hammer that's there. Bam, 00:39:02.17\00:39:06.94 bam, bam, bam. I nail that thought up right beside Jesus, and I say, "That's your 00:39:06.94\00:39:10.05 business, not mine," and I'm gone. I bring that thought to Christ, to obey him, 00:39:10.05\00:39:21.52 and I leave it. Threshold -- Remember, threshold, threshold. 00:39:21.52\00:39:26.06 You got to leave it. Gone. "You're can have this, Lord. 00:39:26.06\00:39:34.67 You can have it." "I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live, yet not 00:39:34.67\00:39:41.38 I --" How's it go? "Yet not I, 00:39:41.38\00:39:43.31 but Christ lives in me and the life I live in the flesh, 00:39:43.31\00:39:48.88 I live by the phase of the son of God who loved me and gave 00:39:48.88\00:39:52.42 himself for me." Is there a verse in the Bible that goes like that? "I'm crucified with 00:39:52.42\00:39:57.43 him." Take every thought to Calvary. Just take it. Nail it 00:39:57.43\00:40:02.03 up in your mind and leave it. You're in a war. And this battle 00:40:02.03\00:40:07.94 is intensifying. I don't need to tell you. Impure spirits operate 24/7, which is pretty much 00:40:07.94\00:40:17.85 always. There's never a break. You are never... 00:40:17.85\00:40:20.92 ...too far away. That's why we need story number three. 00:40:24.22\00:40:30.69 Short story number three. We need to get a little variety in 00:40:30.69\00:40:33.63 this, so we won't read it from the NIV. Let's read it from Eugene Peterson's "The Message". 00:40:33.63\00:40:37.10 And Jesus is telling this story. These are all back to back. "When a corrupting spirit 00:40:37.10\00:40:40.60 is expelled from someone, it drifts along to the desert looking for an oasis, 00:40:40.60\00:40:45.47 some unsuspecting soul it can bedevil. And when it doesn't 00:40:45.47\00:40:50.18 find anyone, it says, 'I'm going back to my old haunt.' 00:40:50.18\00:40:52.18 On return, it finds the person swept and dusted, but vacant. It then runs out and rounds up 00:40:52.18\00:40:59.89 seven other spirits dirtier than itself and they all move in, 00:40:59.89\00:41:05.13 whooping it up. That person ends up far worse than if he had 00:41:05.13\00:41:10.50 never gotten cleaned up in the first place," end quote, the 00:41:10.50\00:41:17.04 end. Hmm. Wow. Jesus' point is inescapable. What you remove, 00:41:17.04\00:41:25.18 you must replace. You must replace it. If you kick that 00:41:25.18\00:41:32.59 addiction out, but it's left in an empty mind and an empty heart, it's over. It's over. 00:41:32.59\00:41:38.39 You have to replace what you remove. In the end, it was Joe 00:41:38.39\00:41:46.97 Dallas in a piece he wrote for the Internet, in which he offers 00:41:46.97\00:41:50.17 three simple steps for freedom from addiction. Pornography, any 00:41:50.17\00:41:54.58 addiction, you name it. All three of these steps are 00:41:54.58\00:41:57.68 operationalizing Jesus admonition. What you remove, you 00:41:57.68\00:42:03.35 must replace. You ready for these? By the way, I'm going to 00:42:03.35\00:42:06.89 give you a link to his article, because you're going to want it for yourself, or you're going to 00:42:06.89\00:42:09.69 want it for somebody else. I know, okay? So let's go. 00:42:09.69\00:42:12.46 Three steps. Here they come. These are short. 00:42:12.46\00:42:14.36 Number one -- step number one -- he calls it repentance. What do you mean by repentance? 00:42:14.36\00:42:18.70 An interesting definition here. "Reject the behavior --" your addictive behavior -- 00:42:18.70\00:42:24.34 "by separating yourself from it. If you have not separated 00:42:24.34\00:42:30.11 yourself from it, you have not repented." If you're addicted to chocolate and you have chocolate 00:42:30.11\00:42:34.92 in every drawer, you say, "I'm off chocolate now," and it's in 00:42:34.92\00:42:43.19 every drawer, you have not repented. It's there. You know, 'cause I'll need it 00:42:43.19\00:42:48.13 someday. No, you can't do that. Separate yourself 00:42:48.13\00:42:53.27 from the paraphernalia of that behavior in which you've become 00:42:53.27\00:42:56.94 dependent. Online pornography, paraphernalia. Include the 00:42:56.94\00:43:00.11 Internet. Some of us, that may be the most significant cut we can make. No Internet. 00:43:00.11\00:43:05.78 "Oh, it'll kill me." Well, choose your method of death. 00:43:05.78\00:43:11.19 Because pornography is going to kill you. I promise you. 00:43:11.19\00:43:16.46 It may be the Internet. It may be cable TV. You don't need 00:43:16.46\00:43:20.23 cable TV. There's nothing you can get on cable TV that you can't get with your brain. 00:43:20.23\00:43:26.77 You have to cut off the dark web for sure. And you know what? 00:43:26.77\00:43:29.87 Your smartphone. A friend of mine told me that -- "Hey, 00:43:29.87\00:43:33.21 Dwight, you know, on the smartphone, you can be looking at the smartphone, and 00:43:33.21\00:43:35.81 everybody thinks you're checking up on your mail and you're looking at pornography." 00:43:35.81\00:43:42.35 So I went online and said, "Can you get a smartphone without the 00:43:42.35\00:43:45.59 web on it?" You can. They're cheap. Flip phones. 00:43:45.59\00:43:50.46 I'm sorry. It's the technology that really entices us. 00:43:50.46\00:43:54.83 You know that's the truth. We're addicted to the technology. 00:43:54.83\00:44:01.17 You can get a phone that will not connect you to the 00:44:01.17\00:44:05.64 wide world of the Web. Joe Dallas' point is to separate 00:44:05.64\00:44:11.68 yourself, separate yourself from those domains that have possessed your mind and your 00:44:11.68\00:44:15.75 spirit. Of course it's hard. But if I don't separate myself... 00:44:15.75\00:44:20.69 ...the outcome is even worse. What you remove, you must 00:44:23.83\00:44:27.36 replace. Okay, step number two. He calls it discipleship. "Establish yourself in 00:44:27.36\00:44:31.13 the daily discipline of prayer and Bible study..." This is 00:44:31.13\00:44:34.70 good. "...which are requirements for anyone wanting to renew his 00:44:34.70\00:44:39.04 or her mind. They will diffuse the power of deeply ingrained sexual images." Because that's 00:44:39.04\00:44:46.95 part of the devil's bargain. "I'm planting this in you 00:44:46.95\00:44:50.55 forever." No, he's not. It can be accessed in your memory, 00:44:50.55\00:44:56.79 but it does not have to trouble you again. It's just 00:44:56.79\00:45:03.87 discipleship. What you remove, you must replace. What if you 00:45:03.87\00:45:06.63 replace Jesus? What if you had a method that you could use every single morning first thing 00:45:06.63\00:45:10.77 before you head out into the day and you have Jesus inside and 00:45:10.77\00:45:14.64 then you go? I'm going to send you a link and you're going to be able to do that, if you want 00:45:14.64\00:45:18.18 that. Step number two is discipleship. Put Jesus in. Come 00:45:18.18\00:45:21.12 on. Replace the addiction, put Jesus in. There are only three 00:45:21.12\00:45:24.02 of these, and here's number three. Step number three. This 00:45:24.02\00:45:26.39 one's going to be a bit tougher. He calls it accountability. "Start a relationship with at 00:45:26.39\00:45:32.93 least one believer --" who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ and his redeeming 00:45:32.93\00:45:37.03 power -- "with at least one believer who knows about your 00:45:37.03\00:45:40.87 use of pornography." Alright? "Have this person ask you 00:45:40.87\00:45:45.47 on a weekly basis, whether you've repeated this behavior and how well you've resisted 00:45:45.47\00:45:50.68 the temptations to repeat it." You got to replace it. When you 00:45:50.68\00:45:55.42 remove something, put something in. Make that something that you 00:45:55.42\00:45:58.22 put in also another human being. Probably not your parent. An 00:45:58.22\00:46:04.49 older adult, a respected adult in your life. It can be a counselor. It can be a chaplain. 00:46:04.49\00:46:09.33 It can be a pastor. Somebody that you've known and you trust. 00:46:09.33\00:46:14.77 "Hey, would you be willing to -- It's kind of embarrassing, but I 00:46:14.77\00:46:19.41 need somebody to hold me accountable. Would you?" "Sure." 00:46:19.41\00:46:23.21 The person would be honored. "Of course." "You won't tell 00:46:23.21\00:46:26.45 anybody, will you?" "Of course not." Accountability. 00:46:26.45\00:46:34.09 Joe Dallas, by the way -- "Remember, sexual sin thrives in 00:46:34.09\00:46:38.56 the dark. A large part of recovery from it lies in your willingness to keep your private 00:46:38.56\00:46:42.53 behavior in the light of another believer's scrutiny and prayer." And I thought, "That is 00:46:42.53\00:46:47.17 well-put." You know what? You can get 00:46:47.17\00:46:48.94 in touch with Dr. Brad Hinman. Brad Hinman is a professor here at Andrews University, also has 00:46:48.94\00:46:54.54 the Hinman Counseling Services in town. So he's a counselor. 00:46:54.54\00:46:57.71 So I go to his website because my friend that shared that little testimony, he's 00:46:57.71\00:47:02.25 being helped hugely by Brad Hinman. So I go to the website, 00:47:02.25\00:47:06.42 and I'll send that to you if you ask for it. "Hinman Counseling 00:47:06.42\00:47:09.32 Services is now conducting a weekly support group for men who are addicted to pornography. 00:47:09.32\00:47:16.20 Dr. Hinman's dissertation was on pornography addiction, and he is 00:47:16.20\00:47:21.17 presented locally, regionally and nationally on this topic more than a dozen times." 00:47:21.17\00:47:26.17 I'm telling you, there's help if you want it. 00:47:26.21\00:47:30.35 There's help. Somebody to whom you now 00:47:30.35\00:47:33.75 become accountable. You can't 00:47:33.75\00:47:36.55 do it without step three. You say, "I'm just doing steps 00:47:36.55\00:47:39.15 one and two." You won't do it. 00:47:39.15\00:47:42.09 You have to become accountable to somebody. 00:47:42.09\00:47:48.56 And by the way, I'm going to say this not to a person 00:47:48.56\00:47:50.70 of the same -- opposite gender. You're better off 00:47:50.70\00:47:55.00 being accountable to somebody who's like you. 00:47:55.00\00:47:58.01 Alright, come on, that's a no-brainer. 00:47:58.01\00:48:00.31 But I say it anyway. 00:48:00.31\00:48:04.58 Three simple steps to set us free from the addiction that has 00:48:04.61\00:48:09.15 bound us, whatever that addiction is. And guess what? All three steps are designed -- 00:48:09.15\00:48:12.92 all three steps move us into the open embrace of our forever 00:48:12.92\00:48:18.39 friend and savior, Jesus. I'm telling you. He's the winner for 00:48:18.39\00:48:25.13 you. I want to end with this quotation from "Steps to 00:48:25.13\00:48:28.10 Christ", this little book that saved my life. It saved my life. 00:48:28.10\00:48:31.17 "Steps to Christ". Oh, this is beautiful. "We shall often have 00:48:31.17\00:48:35.84 to bow down and weep at the feet of Jesus because of our shortcomings and mistakes." 00:48:35.84\00:48:40.62 If you're planning to bat a thousand in the Major League -- 00:48:40.62\00:48:43.22 you know, the World Series is over, but if you're planning to bat a thousand, it's impossible. 00:48:43.22\00:48:48.49 What I'm saying is the greatest hitters on earth can't bat a 00:48:48.49\00:48:53.19 thousand. That means you get a hit every time you step up. There are going to be times 00:48:53.19\00:48:55.73 when you miss. There are going to be times when you stumble and 00:48:55.73\00:49:00.30 fall. The good news is, God says, "That hasn't changed my attitude towards you. 00:49:00.30\00:49:03.61 I'm still loving on you. I haven't changed. Come on, get 00:49:03.61\00:49:06.98 up. Hold my hand. Let's do this again." "We shall often have to 00:49:06.98\00:49:10.98 bow down and weep at the feet of Jesus because of our shortcomings and mistakes. 00:49:10.98\00:49:14.25 But we are not to be discouraged. Even if we are 00:49:14.25\00:49:18.15 overcome by the enemy --" crash and burn. Even then, "we are not 00:49:18.15\00:49:26.59 cast off. We are not forsaken. We are not rejected of God." "That's the third and final 00:49:26.59\00:49:31.10 time. I'm not being in touch with you, Dwight, anymore. 00:49:31.10\00:49:34.80 None of that." Keep reading. "He desires 00:49:34.80\00:49:38.61 to restore you to Himself, to see His own purity --" oh, I love that -- "and holiness 00:49:38.61\00:49:43.21 reflected in you. And if you will but yield yourself to Him, 00:49:43.21\00:49:47.08 He who has begun a good work in you will carry it forward until 00:49:47.08\00:49:50.42 the day Jesus Christ comes back." And he's coming back for 00:49:50.42\00:49:53.96 you, sister. He's coming back for you, brother. He's coming 00:49:53.96\00:49:57.23 back soon. This would be a good time to start calling on him. Remove what's in your life 00:49:57.23\00:50:02.86 and replace it with the Lord Jesus Christ. This would be the 00:50:02.86\00:50:07.24 good time. "All to Jesus, I surrender. All to him, I freely 00:50:07.24\00:50:14.24 give." Wow. "I will ever love and trust him, in his presence, 00:50:14.24\00:50:20.75 daily live. I surrender all. I surrender all." We're going 00:50:20.75\00:50:25.85 to sing that in just a moment. But I promised you some websites, so come on. 00:50:25.85\00:50:29.49 Let's do the ConnectCard thing. If you're a visitor here, pull 00:50:29.49\00:50:32.79 your phone out. You're going to type in -- This is the number 00:50:32.79\00:50:37.07 you want to go to. 269-281-2345. We'll wait for you. Somebody 00:50:37.07\00:50:41.54 came up to me, a visitor, afterwards and said, "What was that number again?" So I'm just 00:50:41.54\00:50:44.64 -- I need to not hurry through that number. So I'm leaving that 00:50:44.64\00:50:47.91 for you right now. Don't worry about it. You just put that number on. Nobody knows why 00:50:47.91\00:50:51.91 you're putting that number on and nobody knows how you're 00:50:51.91\00:50:55.98 going to respond. But you do it. Don't worry about the people sitting around you. 00:50:55.98\00:50:59.75 269-281-2345. And today, you're going to text the word 00:50:59.75\00:51:05.29 "Triumph1". "Triumph1". Yep. 00:51:05.29\00:51:10.60 And when you do that, you'll see a page that will open up. 00:51:10.60\00:51:15.57 And then you'll have these options, and you'll hear from me 00:51:15.57\00:51:19.41 directly in the next split second. Let's go. 00:51:19.41\00:51:22.21 So my next steps today are -- and it's a roll-down scroll. 00:51:22.24\00:51:26.41 So you'll just pick them as you go. 00:51:26.41\00:51:28.82 Box number one -- I want to replace what I remove 00:51:28.82\00:51:30.72 from my life and fill it with Jesus. 00:51:30.72\00:51:32.89 Me too. And I'm going 00:51:32.89\00:51:34.09 to put a checkmark right there. And you'll get a note from me. 00:51:34.09\00:51:37.76 Box number two -- Please send me Joe Dallas' essay 00:51:37.76\00:51:40.56 on the three vital steps to overcome addiction. 00:51:40.56\00:51:44.87 As I said, you're going to want this article and you're going 00:51:44.87\00:51:47.20 to share this article. If you work with human beings as 00:51:47.20\00:51:50.84 a way of life, get this article. The people you're working with, 00:51:50.84\00:51:55.61 90% chance will need what this article 00:51:55.61\00:51:59.18 brings to your life. Okay? 00:51:59.18\00:52:02.25 I'll send you the web link. Box number three -- 00:52:02.25\00:52:06.65 Please send me a simple but doable way to begin a fresh 00:52:06.65\00:52:09.66 devotional life with Jesus. You put a checkmark there, 00:52:09.66\00:52:12.53 and I'll give you a way where you can be -- 00:52:12.53\00:52:13.93 20 minutes in the morning, you will be on your way. 00:52:13.93\00:52:16.97 Replace what you remove. So you're 00:52:16.97\00:52:19.70 going to replace by bringing Jesus in what you're asking him 00:52:19.70\00:52:22.94 to keep, remove from your life. Put a checkmark there. 00:52:22.94\00:52:26.31 And finally, I want to follow Jesus and be baptized. 00:52:26.31\00:52:30.78 I got baptized once in this hymn. 00:52:30.78\00:52:33.25 That's how old this hymn is. They sand it when I got 00:52:33.25\00:52:37.02 baptized. Teenager. 00:52:37.02\00:52:39.12 It's okay. If you haven't been baptized 00:52:39.12\00:52:41.39 yet as a teenager, put a checkmark there. 00:52:41.39\00:52:43.02 We'll be in touch with you. You're a college student. 00:52:43.02\00:52:44.93 Whoa. No. Good. 00:52:44.93\00:52:47.60 There's not a certain age you got to come to. 00:52:47.60\00:52:50.50 You just make a decision. Alright? 00:53:01.78\00:53:04.35 I'm going to sing this song. Come on. Come on. This is such a 00:53:06.15\00:53:08.42 wonderful song. Stand to your feet and we're going to sing a few stanzas of this wonderful 00:53:08.42\00:53:14.32 hymn. It's 309, if you prefer a hymnal. "I Surrender All". 00:53:14.32\00:53:20.40 And we'll just take that chord and we'll sing with it. 00:53:20.40\00:53:23.13 Alright. Let's sing it out together. 00:53:25.70\00:53:28.54 Alright, now we're gonna sing the second stanza. 00:54:20.09\00:54:21.89 It sings about, "Humbly at his feet, I bow." 00:54:21.89\00:54:23.93 We're going to pick up the speed just a little so that 00:54:23.93\00:54:27.30 you can lift your heart up.
