You okay with retro right now? 00:20:14.38\00:20:17.21 I'm gonna read an old-fashioned story. 00:20:17.21\00:20:19.25 I mean, it just feels old-fashioned. 00:20:19.25\00:20:21.18 It is old-fashioned. It's old. 00:20:21.18\00:20:22.88 This story is from the Outback of Australia. 00:20:22.88\00:20:27.52 And as I read it, you'll pick up on it. 00:20:27.52\00:20:30.86 It just has that ancient feel to it. 00:20:30.86\00:20:33.46 But hang on, because this story happens to touch an area of one 00:20:33.46\00:20:38.63 of my own weaknesses. It may bless you, as well. 00:20:38.63\00:20:42.27 So without any further ado, let me read to you "Mr. Bingle's Old 00:20:42.30\00:20:49.11 Coat." You ready? "'Splendid,' said Mrs. Bingle, pulling the 00:20:49.11\00:20:55.05 collar up of Farmer Bingle's new coat, pressing down the flaps. Real velvet collar. 00:20:55.05\00:21:03.02 Yes, and such a piece of cloth. $45 for the whole thing." $45 -- back in that day, it is 00:21:03.02\00:21:12.20 the equivalent -- there's a note scribbled here -- $1,000 U.S. 00:21:12.20\00:21:18.11 $1,000 U.S. So $45 is nothing to sneeze at. "'Ooh! $45?', echoed 00:21:18.11\00:21:24.45 Sam and Jim, admiringly. 'Yep, $17 for the tailor and the trimmings and $28 for the cloth. 00:21:24.45\00:21:30.32 It'll do me till I'm gray.' 'What are you gonna do with the 00:21:30.32\00:21:34.62 old one, Pa?' 'Well, it's a first-rate coat, I'll admit, but I was thinking some of giving it 00:21:34.62\00:21:39.66 to Parson Graves,'" their pastor. "'You see, it'll go on my account for the year, and I 00:21:39.66\00:21:44.47 won't have to pay as much on his salary.' So it was agreed, yes, 00:21:44.47\00:21:50.34 it was, that Parson Graves should have the old overcoat. Accordingly, on the next outing, 00:21:50.34\00:21:54.08 when the farmer, with his wife, was about to drive into the country town, he asked at the 00:21:54.08\00:21:58.15 last moment, 'Now, where's that coat?' 'Oh, bless me,' cried 00:21:58.15\00:22:01.38 Mrs. Bingle. 'I've been so busy cleaning and making supper, if I 00:22:01.38\00:22:05.62 didn't clear forget about it. Sally, Sally!' She ran into the 00:22:05.62\00:22:08.92 house calling the young lady who helped in the kitchen. 'Run up to the spare bedroom and 00:22:08.92\00:22:12.59 take the overcoat that hangs there and some of the papers that lays on the shelf and wrap 00:22:12.59\00:22:17.63 it up well for me and bring it, please.' Soon, Sally brought it, 00:22:17.63\00:22:22.14 and the huge bundle lay in Mrs. Bingle's lap as she rode. 'Oh,' she said as she stroked 00:22:22.14\00:22:27.24 the package. 'It's a good coat,' half regretfully, smoothing a 00:22:27.24\00:22:31.78 little corner. 'Hate to see it go,' agreed the farmer, 'but 00:22:31.78\00:22:36.52 never you mind, woman. It's more blessed to give than to receive, 00:22:36.52\00:22:41.49 you know.' The Bingle household awoke the next morning with the impression that something of an 00:22:41.49\00:22:46.43 event was impending in the family, which impression became with full wakefulness, defined 00:22:46.43\00:22:51.07 into the remembrance that the new overcoat was to be worn for the first time on that day. 00:22:51.07\00:22:56.10 'Yo, Jim, run upstairs, please.' Father tried to not act excited. 'Run upstairs and get my 00:22:56.10\00:23:03.75 overcoat, will you?' Jim bounded up the stairs, but delayed until 00:23:03.75\00:23:09.55 his mother put the last touches on the bow to her bonnet strings. 'I can't find it,' a 00:23:09.55\00:23:13.86 voice from upstairs. 'Well, where are you looking?' 'In the closet of your room.' 00:23:13.86\00:23:17.86 'It's in the closet of the spare room,' called his father. Another long delay. 00:23:17.86\00:23:23.90 And then Jim came downstairs without it. 'I tell you, it's on 00:23:23.90\00:23:28.30 one of them pegs in our closet,' said Mrs. Bingle. 'I'll go 00:23:28.30\00:23:31.81 myself. It's dark, and he can't see. But it's there, for I put 00:23:31.81\00:23:35.91 it there myself.' 'No,' said Mr. Bingle, calling after. 'It's in 00:23:35.91\00:23:40.32 the spare chamber closet. I put it there.' She was heard briskly 00:23:40.32\00:23:43.42 moving from one room to another, then back, then back, then back, and then down the stairs, where 00:23:43.42\00:23:48.19 she stood before them in silence. On her face, blank consternation, and on her arm, 00:23:48.19\00:23:54.36 the old overcoat. [ Gasps ] 'When did you hang it there?' 00:23:54.36\00:24:02.10 'Well, I don't know. The day after it came, I guess. The old one always hung there, 00:24:02.10\00:24:05.17 so I took it down and hung the new one there.' Mrs. Bingle sank 00:24:05.17\00:24:10.01 into a chair. 'It's gone.' 'Gone to Parson Graves,' the boys stared open-mouthed, unable 00:24:10.01\00:24:15.55 at first to fully take in the calamity. 'But you can get it 00:24:15.55\00:24:19.69 again,' at length, Jim said hopefully. 'Of course you can, 00:24:19.69\00:24:23.39 Dad,' Sam said. 'You can just tell Parson Graves it was all a mistake and it was the old coat 00:24:23.39\00:24:28.56 you meant for him, and of course he'll change it around.' His father shook his head 00:24:28.56\00:24:33.74 ruefully. 'Nope. That will not do. It's done. 00:24:33.74\00:24:37.67 It can't be undone,' he said with a groan. 'Don't one of you 00:24:37.67\00:24:41.84 never let on about its being a mistake.' The family and the old coat --" I love this line. 00:24:41.84\00:24:48.15 "The family and the old coat were late to church. Thus, missing the sight of the 00:24:48.15\00:24:52.95 entrance of the new coat, but it lay over the arm now of the little sofa behind the pulpit. 00:24:52.95\00:24:58.26 And Farmer Bingle could never recall a word of that service through which he sat trying to 00:24:58.26\00:25:02.80 bring himself into some friendly recognition of the fact he had presented his minister with a 00:25:02.80\00:25:07.60 $45 --" $1,000 -- "overcoat which he could not hope to have count at anything near its full 00:25:07.60\00:25:14.88 value on his yearly assessment for the pastor's salary. 'But don't he look fine, 00:25:14.88\00:25:19.98 though,' interjected Sam as Mr. Graves came down the aisle. 'And don't Mrs. Graves look 00:25:19.98\00:25:24.42 happy,' said Jim. 'Enough to make any woman happy to hang on to a piece of cloth 00:25:24.42\00:25:28.52 like that,' said Mrs. Bingle. Mr. Bingle was unhitching his horses as Mr. Graves came out 00:25:28.52\00:25:33.96 the church door, and so Mr. Bingle did not at first raise 00:25:33.96\00:25:37.50 his eyes. As he listened to the remarks passing by, a voice 00:25:37.50\00:25:41.00 said, 'Bless me. What a fine-looking fellow our parson is anyhow. Where on Earth did he 00:25:41.00\00:25:45.07 get that coat?' Another voice spoke out, 'Must have had a 00:25:45.07\00:25:48.71 fortune left him.' Mr. Bingle could not help feeling that the coat had been well-bestowed, as 00:25:48.71\00:25:53.21 his wearer came to meet him with outstretched hands and a few quiet, though very earnest, 00:25:53.21\00:25:57.59 words of acknowledgement of his gift. The coat had fitted the 00:25:57.59\00:26:01.32 farmer well, but there was something more than the mere feeling of a good cloth and the 00:26:01.32\00:26:06.49 minister's dignified bearing. And in the scholarly face which appeared above it, something 00:26:06.49\00:26:11.50 which stirred up feeling in many members of the congregation that this servant of the Lord had not 00:26:11.50\00:26:17.54 hitherto been clothed in a fashion worthy of his high 00:26:17.54\00:26:24.98 office. 'Well, that's a shabby old hat to wear,' said one of the village storekeepers. 00:26:24.98\00:26:28.78 'I'll see about that before another Sabbath comes around.' As Mr. Bingle felt the grasp of 00:26:28.78\00:26:34.36 his pastor's hand, he began almost to be glad that he had 00:26:34.36\00:26:38.73 given the coat. And then, as the fact of his having given it was whispered about, he began to 00:26:38.73\00:26:43.00 feel ashamed at receiving so much credit for an act which he never would have thought of 00:26:43.00\00:26:48.60 performing, for an honest and really warm nature lay under the crust of parsimonious 00:26:48.60\00:26:54.61 selfishness which had hardened over his heart as it has, alas, over so many which might 00:26:54.61\00:27:00.92 overflow in deeds of kindness to bless those who have given not grudgingly, but their whole 00:27:00.92\00:27:06.49 lives to the master's service. [ Breathes deeply ] 'I feel like a 00:27:06.49\00:27:10.93 liar, yes, I do,' said Mr. Bingle to his wife with an energy that startled her as they 00:27:10.93\00:27:15.43 rode home. 'To have that man shaking me by the hand and talking about my generosity and 00:27:15.43\00:27:21.34 his wife's eyes beaming up at me and me not able to write out and tell them I'm a grudging, 00:27:21.34\00:27:26.11 tight-fisted old -- I tell you what.' He gave the horses' reins such a vigorous yank that Jim 00:27:26.11\00:27:30.65 and Sam, on the back backless seat of the bobsleigh, nearly went over backwards into the 00:27:30.65\00:27:36.72 snow. 'I've got to get even with myself somehow, but I don't just 00:27:36.72\00:27:45.83 know how yet.' Suddenly, everybody starts showing up. Everybody starts showing up at 00:27:45.83\00:27:49.76 the parsonage. Everybody's bringing gifts to the Graveses. 00:27:49.76\00:27:54.10 And, by the way, not cheap goods and casts-out. No, no, no. 00:27:54.10\00:27:58.31 In the generous supply of winter comforts now coming to the parsonage, each giver made sure 00:27:58.31\00:28:03.31 it should be in keeping with that fine new overcoat. And the wives and the mothers 00:28:03.31\00:28:07.95 had seen to it that Mrs. Graves and the children should look fit to walk beside that tailor-made 00:28:07.95\00:28:13.19 piece of cloth. Mr. Bingle had smiled with a light in his own 00:28:13.19\00:28:17.76 eyes, which came up from somewhere under the broken crust when he saw a set of furs his 00:28:17.76\00:28:22.80 wife brought out and carried over to Mrs. Graves that night. But in the early gray of the 00:28:22.80\00:28:27.37 winter morning, he, with Sam's help -- 'shh!' -- quietly unloaded in the backyard of the 00:28:27.37\00:28:33.38 parsonage a tub of butter, potatoes, and six barrels of his best apples, packed for market. 00:28:33.38\00:28:39.85 'A goodly amount if I carted it a half a mile farther,' he said to his wife with a face which 00:28:39.85\00:28:44.99 shone as he sat down to breakfast. 'And not a soul heard 00:28:44.99\00:28:49.92 us,' said Sam, rubbing his hands in great glee. 'Oh, I wish I 00:28:49.92\00:28:53.86 could have seen them when they found out.' 'Now I'm even,' said the farmer. 'And it was the best 00:28:53.86\00:29:00.54 day's work I ever did when I gave away that coat by mistake.'" The end. 00:29:00.54\00:29:07.94 Isn't that a great story? You got to admit -- come on -- that it touches us right where 00:29:07.94\00:29:13.72 it hurts -- selfishness. Selfishness. Are you a selfish 00:29:13.72\00:29:22.12 person? Am I? Don't say anything. Come on, selfishness. The truth is that, just like 00:29:22.12\00:29:29.70 Mr. Bingle, we've all been born with selfishness, from the parson to the farmer to you to 00:29:29.70\00:29:36.71 me. But an accidental gift he never would have given turned 00:29:36.71\00:29:42.74 out to be the surgical strike to break through the crusty shell 00:29:42.74\00:29:49.35 of selfishness. Selfishness. Where do we get it from, anyway? Do we get it from Mr. Bingle's? 00:29:49.35\00:29:53.36 No, we didn't get it from Mr. Bingle's. You know where we got 00:29:53.36\00:29:56.99 it from? From a fallen, brilliant, demented angel who once went by the name Lucifer, 00:29:56.99\00:30:03.20 now goes by the name Satan, that old serpent called the devil that deceives the whole world. 00:30:03.20\00:30:07.77 That's where we got it from. Fair and square, born with it, because selfishness is just a 00:30:07.77\00:30:15.41 code word for "self-worship." And we all self-worship, just 00:30:15.41\00:30:29.52 like Lucifer. So, that's one story, but there's another one, and it's the other one that 00:30:29.52\00:30:34.50 matters right now, because embedded in this story is the antivenom to the serpent's 00:30:34.50\00:30:44.84 poison. Selfishness. Open your Bible now to Luke 19. Luke 19. 00:30:44.84\00:30:49.54 Come on. This is the second story. Luke 19. "Hey, wait a 00:30:49.54\00:30:53.82 minute, Dwight. Weren't we just on Luke 19 last week?" Yep. You 00:30:53.82\00:30:57.02 got it. In fact, we're going right after last week's story ends. You remember the story 00:30:57.02\00:31:01.36 about the 10 servants, one mina each? Yeah, we all remember that one. Boy, that was a punchy one. 00:31:01.36\00:31:05.49 Won't come back to that for a while. The very next words -- 00:31:05.49\00:31:09.33 Let's go to them right now. Luke 19. Drop down to Verse 28. 00:31:09.33\00:31:13.17 Here it comes. "And after Jesus had said this --" Said what? 00:31:13.17\00:31:16.34 Told the parable about the 10 servant each receiving one mina. 00:31:16.34\00:31:19.54 Oh, if you missed that one, go online. It's sitting there for 00:31:19.54\00:31:22.94 you. "After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to 00:31:22.94\00:31:27.35 Jerusalem." Goodbye, Jericho. Hello, Jerusalem. Going up to Jerusalem so that he 00:31:27.35\00:31:33.29 could become the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, including my selfishness and 00:31:33.29\00:31:39.43 your selfishness. That's where He's headed. "And as He approached Bethphage 00:31:39.43\00:31:46.27 and Bethany --" House of Figs and House of the Poor -- "at the hill called the Mount of Olives, 00:31:46.27\00:31:51.07 He sent two of His disciples, saying to them, 'Hey, listen, guys, go to the village ahead of 00:31:51.07\00:31:55.64 you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. 00:31:55.64\00:32:02.35 Untie it and bring it here. And if anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?", you just say, 00:32:02.35\00:32:09.56 "The Lord needs it."'" Awkward! I mean, please. 00:32:09.56\00:32:15.80 Can you imagine being -- giving those instructions? You're sitting out here in the 00:32:15.80\00:32:20.37 little village park -- yes, you are -- with that sweet little honey of yours, that girlfriend 00:32:20.37\00:32:24.37 of yours. Brand-new Toyota that you're driving. 00:32:24.37\00:32:26.68 You're so excited about it. You're sitting in the park. You don't notice that I walk by 00:32:26.68\00:32:30.55 the park. I see the keys. Bad mistake of your part. 00:32:30.55\00:32:33.01 I see the keys in the ignition. I jump in the car. I crank that 00:32:33.01\00:32:36.95 engine over. You come racing -- "Whoa, whoa! What are you doing?" "Well, I just want to 00:32:36.95\00:32:45.06 ride this car that's never been ridden in before. Do you have a 00:32:45.06\00:32:47.60 problem with that?" "Problem?!" Yeah, you know how it would be. 00:32:47.60\00:32:51.57 Can you imagine doing it? [ Chuckles ] Can you imagine? 00:32:51.57\00:32:54.27 "'If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?", just say, "The 00:32:54.27\00:32:57.57 Lord needs it."'" Oh, but don't forget, the disciples are headed to Jerusalem, because they 00:32:57.57\00:33:01.48 believe Jesus is now gonna be crowned king. And when you're a 00:33:01.48\00:33:04.88 king, you can requisition anything you wish, thank you. So they're not worried about it. 00:33:04.88\00:33:09.62 Guess what. It happens just as Jesus said it would. 00:33:09.62\00:33:12.35 Anybody surprised? "Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as Jesus had 00:33:12.35\00:33:16.36 told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked, 'Yo! 00:33:16.36\00:33:21.33 Why are you untying that colt?' And they replied, 'The Lord 00:33:21.33\00:33:26.50 needs it.'" And guess what. "They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and 00:33:26.50\00:33:30.97 put Jesus on it. And as He went along, people spread their 00:33:30.97\00:33:35.28 cloaks along the road," and they cut off palm branches, and thus was born the name Palm Sunday. 00:33:35.28\00:33:39.85 You see, that is Palm Sunday. This story is happening on Palm 00:33:39.85\00:33:44.09 Sunday. On Good Friday, it's all over, and on Easter Sunday, a new universe has begun. 00:33:44.09\00:33:51.83 Wow. For the next few moments, brood with me over that four-line word -- "The Lord 00:33:51.83\00:34:01.10 needs it." Come to think of it, that's been the story of Jesus' 00:34:01.10\00:34:05.84 life from the get-go. He has always been dependent on others 00:34:05.84\00:34:14.38 to meet His needs. "I need a crib." And they scour through that stinky stable to find a 00:34:14.38\00:34:18.72 crude box of cow feed into which to bed the newborn king. "I need 00:34:18.72\00:34:23.22 some food." And a boy steps forward with five loaves and two fishes and ends up 15,000 people 00:34:23.22\00:34:29.76 getting fed. Wow! "I need a drink." 00:34:29.76\00:34:32.47 So the Samaritan woman lowers her jar into that dark recess of that deep well to quench His 00:34:32.47\00:34:37.61 thirst. And guess what. It turns out it's her thirst 00:34:37.61\00:34:40.98 that gets slaked. Wow! "I need to sleep." 00:34:40.98\00:34:45.75 So Peter pushes towards him the coxswain's pillow at the back of the fishing skiff so the 00:34:45.75\00:34:50.99 dead-tired master can sleep through the storm. "I need a 00:34:50.99\00:34:56.39 room." So Martha and Mary and Lazarus offer a room of their own for the Son of Man, who has 00:34:56.39\00:35:02.26 no place to lay down His head. "I need a coin." Somebody in the 00:35:02.26\00:35:06.63 crowd flips him a dinar so that He can finish his illustration. 00:35:06.63\00:35:11.31 "I need a donkey." So a stranger says, "You may -- You can have mine." "I need a prayer 00:35:11.31\00:35:16.11 partner." So all 11 of His Disciples sleep while He prays 00:35:16.14\00:35:19.95 into His last night on Earth. "I need a defender." 00:35:19.95\00:35:24.45 But, alas, no one speaks up in His defense at that sham of a 00:35:24.45\00:35:28.06 trial. "I need a crown." 00:35:28.06\00:35:29.86 So some heartless soldiers plait a crown of thorns and 00:35:29.86\00:35:33.36 shove it into his tender brow. "I need a throne." 00:35:33.36\00:35:37.37 So some part-time carpenters hammer together two pieces of 00:35:37.37\00:35:41.17 wood, a perch for the King of Jews to be nailed and to 00:35:41.17\00:35:44.84 hang before the universe. "I need a drink again." 00:35:44.84\00:35:50.81 So a compassionate soldier soaks a sponge in sour vinegar and 00:35:50.81\00:35:57.62 raises it on the tip of his spear to moisten the lips of the 00:35:57.62\00:36:03.06 dying savior. 00:36:03.06\00:36:04.76 "I need a grave." So a secret admirer steps forward and says, 00:36:04.79\00:36:12.43 "I'll bury Him in mine." "I need a witness." And, at last, 11 00:36:12.43\00:36:20.24 men, with courage born afresh of Calvary, step forward and lead an entire generation to step up 00:36:20.24\00:36:30.99 and say, "Sign me up," and they did. Well, like I'm telling you, Jesus has always been dependent 00:36:30.99\00:36:37.79 on others to meet the needs He has, and it makes me wonder... what's He need from you? 00:36:37.79\00:36:46.70 What's he needing from you? Need a hint? There are three gimmes, 00:36:46.70\00:36:57.21 three give-mes, that Jesus offers. Three strategic and surgical strikes to break the 00:36:57.21\00:37:06.42 deadly grip of self-worship in my mind and heart and in yours, as well. Three gimmes. 00:37:06.42\00:37:12.46 I'm gonna run these three by you right now. Give Me Number 1. 00:37:12.46\00:37:17.83 "The Lord needs it." That's why He has Give Me Number 1 00:37:17.83\00:37:23.17 Give Me Number 1 -- "Give Me your heart." The wisest man who 00:37:23.17\00:37:26.91 ever lived scribbled in his book -- Proverbs 23:26 -- "My child, give Me your heart." 00:37:26.91\00:37:33.31 The French have a proverb. I like it. "He gives nothing who 00:37:33.31\00:37:37.89 does not give himself." He gives nothing -- You have to look at 00:37:37.89\00:37:42.96 that for a while. He gives nothing who does not give himself. That's the first gift 00:37:42.96\00:37:49.86 God asks for. Whether you're 14, 44, or 84, it doesn't matter to 00:37:49.86\00:37:53.50 God. He says, "Listen, numero uno, give me your heart. I want 00:37:53.50\00:38:01.04 your heart. I want your self." That's what self-ish is about -- holding on to self. 00:38:01.04\00:38:09.75 "I want your heart." Why, no wonder we have these red-letter 00:38:09.75\00:38:14.16 words. In the Apocalypse, the Bible's last book, Jesus Himself 00:38:14.16\00:38:17.76 speaking. "Here I am!" He's talking to you, He's talking to 00:38:17.76\00:38:20.83 me right now. "Boy, girl, I stand at the door (of your heart) and I am knocking. 00:38:20.83\00:38:23.93 If you hear My voice and open the door, I will come in to 00:38:23.93\00:38:26.90 you." If you've never given your heart to Jesus before, you've never said, "Lord, come in to my 00:38:26.90\00:38:30.71 life --" He's standing there right now. I am promising you, 00:38:30.71\00:38:33.58 He is knocking right now and He's saying, "Yo, would you be willing to let me in?" 00:38:33.58\00:38:39.08 Three give-mes. Give Me Number 1 -- "Give Me your heart." 00:38:39.08\00:38:44.45 I had a young man in my office just a few days ago. He's lived a tough life, but -- 00:38:44.45\00:38:48.79 hallelujah -- God's turning it around. And he was sharing some 00:38:48.79\00:38:52.56 of the stories of his recovery. And I reminded him, "Lookit, lookit, lookit, boy, first 00:38:52.56\00:38:56.67 things first. You have to give Him your heart first. 00:38:56.67\00:39:00.70 Don't make any plans for your life until you've given Him your 00:39:00.70\00:39:04.11 heart." "Well, I'm graduating with this degree and then I'm going to do this and I'm gonna 00:39:04.11\00:39:08.21 conquer the world." No, you're not. You give Him your heart 00:39:08.21\00:39:13.21 first. Then you move out for those dreams. Jesus, I hear you 00:39:13.21\00:39:19.79 knocking at my door. I open the door of my life to you, myself 00:39:19.79\00:39:24.56 to you. The serpent has injected his venom deep into my very soul, but, Jesus, you come in 00:39:24.56\00:39:29.16 and bleed me. Antidote, antidote that venom. Antivenom that 00:39:29.16\00:39:37.17 poison away. He says, "I'll do it. Give me your heart. You have to give me something. 00:39:37.17\00:39:42.24 We have to break the back of the serpent in your life. Give it to 00:39:42.24\00:39:47.98 me." Three give-mes. "The Lord has need of it." That's why. "The Lord needs it." 00:39:47.98\00:39:54.52 Give Me Number 2 -- "Give Me your time." Oh, boy, God is 00:39:54.52\00:39:59.53 really -- I got to tell you this. He is really huge on time. 00:39:59.53\00:40:03.70 Watch this. 2 Corinthians 6:2. "Now is the time of God's favor, 00:40:03.70\00:40:10.37 now is the day of salvation." Mer-cy! William Temple, the 00:40:10.37\00:40:16.28 great Archbishop of Canterbury back in the 20th century -- William Temple never forgot the 00:40:16.28\00:40:20.65 lesson his father taught him when he was a boy. The father kept telling William, 00:40:20.65\00:40:25.02 "William, William --" Always complaining about no time. "William, you have all the time 00:40:25.02\00:40:30.49 there is. There's no more. You have it." The truth is, we have 00:40:30.49\00:40:40.10 just as much time as this face I'm gonna show you right now, right here. You're gonna see it 00:40:40.10\00:40:45.27 on the big screen. Held in my hand, we have all the time in the world, as much time 00:40:45.27\00:40:51.88 as this young man, 11 years old, sitting on the prestigious cover 00:40:51.88\00:40:58.95 of Time magazine. His name is Orion Jean. Did I say he's 11? Did I tell you that he is 00:40:58.95\00:41:07.00 honored as the Kid of the Year? Did I mention that? Did I tell you yet that he is an 00:41:07.00\00:41:14.37 11-year-old Seventh Day Adventist and member of the Dallas Temple Church in Texas? 00:41:14.37\00:41:20.74 >> Amen! >> Did I tell you that? I wanted to tell you right off 00:41:20.74\00:41:25.58 the bat so when you hear his list of credentials, you're 00:41:25.58\00:41:30.12 gonna say, "Whoa!" And he's only 11. At the age of 9 -- I will tell you this -- he gave a 00:41:30.12\00:41:34.72 speech. They have a national speech contest for kindness, and he gave a speech on kindness. 00:41:34.72\00:41:38.73 And what's the line in that speech? He wrote this line and 00:41:38.73\00:41:42.36 spoke it. "Kindness is a virtue we can all possess if we are willing to." And then, guess 00:41:42.36\00:41:47.20 what. He forms an organization, at the age of 9, called The Race 00:41:47.20\00:41:51.81 to Kindness. He won $500 for doing such a great speech, and he took his $500 and he started 00:41:51.81\00:41:57.75 investing it. He invested it in 600 toys for children in the 00:41:57.75\00:42:01.35 Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He handed the 00:42:01.35\00:42:07.52 toys away, and then he forms a national organization called, as I told you, Race to Kindness. 00:42:07.52\00:42:12.53 And now you know what they're doing? They're distributing food 00:42:12.53\00:42:16.16 and books. 100,000 meals have been distributed because this 00:42:16.16\00:42:20.20 9-year-old boy said, "I can do something for Jesus." 500,000 books have been given 00:42:20.20\00:42:25.77 away to students who don't have access to literature because of 00:42:25.77\00:42:31.08 the cost. A half-a-million books because this boy said, "I can do something for Jesus if I use my 00:42:31.08\00:42:36.52 time for Him." Now, don't you dare come up to me after this 00:42:36.52\00:42:40.89 service and say, "You know, Pastor, I really would like to volunteer my services in this 00:42:40.89\00:42:44.89 church, but I just don't have the time." You tell that to Orion Jean, will you? 00:42:44.89\00:42:49.40 He was sitting on ABC television. They're interviewing 00:42:49.40\00:42:53.40 him and they're asking him "why you do what you do." And he told 00:42:53.40\00:42:57.34 them, "You know, I used the things that I saw on the news every day -- people losing their 00:42:57.34\00:43:01.84 jobs and their homes and access to food and books and clothing, things we sometimes take for 00:43:01.84\00:43:06.48 granted, and with a little bit of kindness, we can hopefully give back those things. 00:43:06.48\00:43:10.25 And I decided I could help give back those things." I'm so proud 00:43:10.25\00:43:14.82 of this kid. >> Yes! >> Of course, I'm really proud of him 00:43:14.82\00:43:18.83 because he's a Seventh Day Adventist young man. 00:43:18.83\00:43:21.43 Gift Number 2 -- "Give Me your time." Orion did. 00:43:24.70\00:43:29.77 He's interviewed by Angelina Jolie. Now, that would be an 00:43:29.77\00:43:34.21 interview. And it's here in Time magazine. Yeah. Little embarrassed to talk about not 00:43:34.21\00:43:42.82 having enough time. "Give me your time." Jesus invites you. What's the deal with 00:43:42.82\00:43:46.25 volunteering? It's not just about killing time. 00:43:46.25\00:43:49.16 It is a strategic giving that antidotes the venom of 00:43:49.16\00:43:53.66 self-worship. When you give time, you're crushing, you're crushing that serpent's venom. 00:43:53.66\00:43:57.90 You're crushing it. >> Yes. >> When you give yourself, when 00:43:57.90\00:44:02.27 you give your time... "The Lord needs it." He doesn't need it 00:44:02.27\00:44:10.78 'cause He doesn't have enough time. He needs it because you have too much time. 00:44:10.78\00:44:15.62 He says, "Give it to me." Give it to me." Alright, there are 00:44:15.62\00:44:19.32 three of these. What's the point of all these gimmes? 00:44:19.32\00:44:22.12 Well, I'll tell you. The point is, it is the act of giving. 00:44:22.12\00:44:26.73 That's what I'm trying to share with you. It is the act of 00:44:26.73\00:44:30.20 giving that breaks the crust of selfishness and antidotes the venom of self-worship. 00:44:30.20\00:44:35.24 He just kind of bleeds it out of you when you give. Oh, but there 00:44:35.24\00:44:39.37 are three. There's one more. Okay, so, number 3 -- "Give Me 00:44:39.37\00:44:43.85 your means." "Well, what do you mean by 'means,' Dwight?" Well, I put "Give Me your means" 00:44:43.85\00:44:47.95 because I didn't want to be really in your face and say what God is really saying here, and 00:44:47.95\00:44:52.92 that's, "Give me your money." That's what He's saying. "Give 00:44:52.92\00:45:00.10 Me your money." That's the hardest give that there is. You can give your time till 00:45:00.10\00:45:03.40 you're blue in the face, but it's the money we hang on to till the bitter end. 00:45:03.40\00:45:10.41 "Give Me your money." Whew! "Are you serious?" 00:45:10.41\00:45:16.01 As serious -- As they say, as serious as a heart attack. It's the number-one, the numero 00:45:16.01\00:45:22.15 uno, subject that Jesus deals with in His entire four Gospels' 00:45:22.15\00:45:27.32 lifetime. He talks more about money than any other subject. He must know that the gimme 00:45:27.32\00:45:33.03 there breaks, antidotes the venom of self-worship. Ed Gungor, in his book -- I love 00:45:33.03\00:45:40.30 the title of this book -- "Religiously Transmitted 00:45:40.30\00:45:46.04 Diseases." Huh? Huh? "Religiously Transmitted 00:45:46.04\00:45:49.31 Diseases"? Are you serious? Ed Gungor, in his book "Religiously 00:45:49.31\00:45:53.62 Transmitted Diseases" -- he got it right here. "Giving touches a 00:45:53.62\00:45:57.95 nerve in us that nothing else does. We look a lot like God 00:45:57.95\00:46:01.49 when we do it." Why? For God so loved the world that He what, what, what? He gave. 00:46:01.49\00:46:05.09 We look like God. "We look a lot like God when we do it. 00:46:05.09\00:46:08.20 When you give, you defy the fear that you won't have enough." You were thinking, when those 00:46:08.20\00:46:14.10 kids went by, "No, I'm not gonna give that $20. I'll give a $1. 00:46:14.10\00:46:16.77 Because if I give the $20, what do I have?" That's why we don't 00:46:16.77\00:46:21.58 give. We fear that we won't have enough. Come on, be honest. 00:46:21.58\00:46:25.48 Yep. "You insult greed" -- when you give -- "the impulse to acquire or possess more than one 00:46:25.48\00:46:31.95 needs or deserves. If you really believe that God owns it all and 00:46:31.95\00:46:36.99 that He is your source and provider, giving will be a simple matter," because it's His 00:46:36.99\00:46:42.60 anyway. Huh? Keep reading. "The arena of giving is the only place where exactly what's going 00:46:42.60\00:46:48.00 on in your heart is revealed. "Hit the pause button there, 00:46:48.00\00:46:51.54 Dwight." I will. If you're honest with me and you tell me 00:46:51.54\00:47:00.42 what you give... you tell me what you give, I will immediately buy what you tell 00:47:00.42\00:47:06.62 me. Learn about your spirituality. Somebody talked about the widow's mite. 00:47:06.62\00:47:12.49 Is that what you talked about? That beautiful baby named Luke? 00:47:12.49\00:47:16.20 Why was the widow's -- Why was the widow commended by Jesus? 00:47:19.17\00:47:27.98 She gave nothing. The others were pouring in these bags of money and feeling so good 00:47:27.98\00:47:32.15 because everybody's saying, "What a giver." Why was she commended by Jesus? Because you 00:47:32.15\00:47:39.02 are commended not by the amount you give, but by the amount you keep. And the guys dumping in 00:47:39.02\00:47:45.49 the big gold were keeping a lot. So it's not the amount. Don't 00:47:45.49\00:47:51.23 feel bad. It's what you have left over. That's what we give 00:47:51.23\00:47:57.14 out of. Yeah. "According to Jesus, giving keeps your heart in motion toward God and away 00:47:57.14\00:48:01.14 from material things. Your heart will follow the direction of 00:48:01.14\00:48:07.98 your giving." "For where your treasure is --" What did Jesus say? "Where your treasure is... 00:48:07.98\00:48:12.49 there your heart will be also." Yeah. And, yet, do you know that 00:48:12.49\00:48:16.76 there's some people -- in the Church, even -- If you ask them, you say, "Come on, I want you to 00:48:16.76\00:48:22.33 be honest with me," they're not giving anything at all. Maybe $1 when the kid goes by. 00:48:22.33\00:48:26.67 "Well, she's such a cute little girl. I'll give her $1." 00:48:26.67\00:48:31.54 No giving to the God who gives you every beat of your heart? 00:48:31.54\00:48:38.55 "No." No giving to the Lord who gives you every breath of your 00:48:38.55\00:48:46.62 lungs? "No." No giving at all? "No." You got to be kidding me. 00:48:46.62\00:48:53.63 "I don't look at the books." God does -- your books. You know 00:48:53.63\00:49:04.54 what? You and I cannot afford not to give if eternity is the endgame. Hey, listen, if 00:49:04.54\00:49:15.75 eternity's not a big deal for you, you want to grab for all the gusto you can, be my guest. 00:49:15.75\00:49:19.75 Spend it all now. You don't have to save a penny, boy. 00:49:19.75\00:49:22.69 Just let it go. But if eternity is where you wish to spend the 00:49:22.69\00:49:28.20 rest of eternity in, then giving is what breaks the anti... anti-worship that Lucifer calls, 00:49:28.20\00:49:45.01 rightfully, the "I" worship, self-worship. Wow. 00:49:45.01\00:49:49.75 Let's listen to Jesus before He became Jesus. He was just Christ 00:49:49.75\00:49:53.62 when He spoke these words, the preincarnate Christ. Malachi 3. 00:49:53.62\00:49:56.29 These might be familiar to you. "Will a mere mortal rob God?", 00:49:56.29\00:50:00.93 Christ asked. "Yet you rob Me." "How? Come on, Jesus. We don't 00:50:00.93\00:50:04.70 rob you. How are we robbing you?" He answers, "'In tithes 00:50:04.70\00:50:09.47 and offerings.'" "No, you got to be kidding me." "No, I'm not kidding you." Verse 10. 00:50:09.47\00:50:16.71 "So bring the whole tithe." That's code language, by the 00:50:16.71\00:50:19.85 way. The word "tithe" is a code word in the New Testament -- also in the Old Testament -- 10% 00:50:19.85\00:50:24.45 of your gain, 10% of your gain. "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be 00:50:24.45\00:50:28.96 food in My house." 'Test me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 00:50:28.96\00:50:31.99 the Lord of Hosts, 'and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour 00:50:31.99\00:50:35.33 out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store 00:50:35.33\00:50:39.07 it.'" Can you believe it? He is gonna reward your crushing the venom of the serpent in your 00:50:39.07\00:50:45.54 life. He will reward you for doing that. 00:50:45.54\00:50:48.34 You can't believe it. What did Jesus just say in our Scripture reading a moment ago? 00:50:48.34\00:50:53.62 "Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed 00:50:53.62\00:50:57.35 down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into 00:50:57.35\00:51:01.99 your lap." I could line them up on this platform right here. Men, women, children, teens, 00:51:01.99\00:51:07.73 college students, graduate students. I could line them up 00:51:07.73\00:51:11.43 right here, and they would give their testimonies to you, I 00:51:11.43\00:51:16.57 promise you. And you know what their testimonies would be 00:51:16.60\00:51:21.34 about? How when they faithfully returned God's tithe -- because 00:51:21.34\00:51:24.68 it's His tithe, not ours -- how when they faithfully returned 00:51:24.68\00:51:28.28 their little 10% and cheerfully, mind you -- cheerfully gave the 00:51:28.28\00:51:31.95 offerings that they were able to give. 00:51:31.95\00:51:34.92 How? God has proven to be their CFO. 00:51:34.92\00:51:40.03 What does CFO stand for? What's the "C" stand for? 00:51:40.03\00:51:43.70 >> Chief. >> Chief. 00:51:43.70\00:51:44.97 What's the "F" stand for? Financial. What's the "O"? 00:51:44.97\00:51:48.37 >> Officer. >> The one who makes the 00:51:48.37\00:51:50.17 decisions, the CFO. 00:51:50.17\00:51:52.81 They said, "It's no big deal to me. I asked God one day, 'You 00:51:52.84\00:51:57.61 become my CFO, and I'll give you my dreams. I'll give you my 00:51:57.61\00:52:02.02 career. I'll give you my children. I'll give you my job 00:52:02.02\00:52:05.72 -- or no job. I'll give it all to you, and you be my CFO.'" 00:52:05.72\00:52:13.80 Wow. "You manage my finances. You know we have more month than 00:52:13.80\00:52:21.90 money many times. But, God, I'm counting on you. I'm counting on you to take that 90% or maybe 00:52:21.90\00:52:28.24 only 80% left over now. I'm counting on you to take what would have been the 100% and 00:52:28.24\00:52:32.71 stretch that 100% bigger than it could ever have been had I kept the 100% to myself. 00:52:32.71\00:52:36.82 I'm counting on You because You are the omnipotent creator of this universe, and if You could 00:52:36.82\00:52:41.29 open the floodgates of heaven, You can take care of me. I'm 00:52:41.29\00:52:45.56 counting on You. I'm counting on You." God doesn't need our money, our quarters, our dollar 00:52:45.56\00:52:52.67 bills, our $500 checks. Pssht! This isn't about God needing our 00:52:52.67\00:52:56.30 money. This is about the venom inside of us needing to be bled out of us, and giving is the 00:52:56.30\00:53:06.45 antivenom that saves us. Not long after the story of "Mr. Bingle's Old Coat," these 00:53:06.45\00:53:14.22 words were written. Put them on the screen for you. About the 00:53:14.22\00:53:18.26 same time in Australia, these words were written. "Let us surrender ourselves a 00:53:18.26\00:53:21.86 living sacrifice and give our all --" "No, come on." No, "All to Jesus. It's His. 00:53:21.86\00:53:28.37 We're His purchased possession. Those who are recipients of His grace, who contemplate the cross 00:53:28.37\00:53:33.61 of Calvary, will not question concerning the proportion --" 00:53:33.61\00:53:37.35 "How much is this? Do you have a tithe-light in this church? You know, not 10%, but how about 00:53:37.35\00:53:40.92 9%?" No, we don't have tithe-light. Don't contemplate 00:53:40.92\00:53:45.72 concern over the proportion to be given. No, when we "contemplate the cross of 00:53:45.72\00:53:50.66 Calvary, will not question concerning the proportion to be given, but will feel that the 00:53:50.66\00:53:55.26 richest offering is all too meager, all disproportionate to the great gift of the only 00:53:55.26\00:54:04.01 begotten son of the Infinite God. Through self-denial, the poorest will find ways of 00:54:04.01\00:54:09.31 obtaining something to give back to God." There it is. That's it. Four words -- "The Lord needs 00:54:09.31\00:54:19.12 it." And for the venom that's still in me and the venom that 00:54:19.12\00:54:27.13 still circulates in you, giving will break the serpent's back. 00:54:27.13\00:54:36.34 I want to sing a chorus with you. 00:54:36.37\00:54:38.17 Before we do, I want you to just check out this Connect Card. 00:54:38.17\00:54:41.41 If you'll just text the words -- the last one of this series -- 00:54:41.41\00:54:45.01 "Signup6" to 269-281-2345.
