In Jesus' name, we worship You. Continuing now 00:16:17.87\00:16:26.55 that all the people say Amen. And Amen. 00:16:26.55\00:16:32.22 If it's true that familiarity breeds contempt, I'm telling you 00:16:32.25\00:16:40.53 what -- I am developing, as we speak, a major, major 00:16:40.53\00:16:47.90 contempt for this pandemic. [ Light laughter ] 00:16:47.90\00:16:53.14 Huh? I got -- I went to the counter 00:16:53.14\00:16:56.28 myself, this last week. I didn't know what the number 00:16:56.28\00:16:58.85 would be. 00:16:58.85\00:16:59.95 But wouldn't you know it, with my own finger, I pointed at every single Sabbath that this 00:17:00.05\00:17:05.92 church and this campus have been under the suffocating blanket of this COVID-19 pandemic. 00:17:05.92\00:17:13.36 Guess how many Sabbaths? 100. Today is the 100th Sabbath in a 00:17:13.36\00:17:20.34 row that we have endured this pandemic. And don't nobody say, 00:17:20.34\00:17:25.54 "Happy Anniversary." [ Laughter ] No. 00:17:25.54\00:17:29.91 There's some of you here who probably are saying, you know, "What is this American 00:17:29.91\00:17:33.62 English -- 'familiarity breeds contempt'?" Well, I went to 00:17:33.62\00:17:39.09 Google, and I said, "Hey, Google, give me a simple definition of 'Familiarity 00:17:39.09\00:17:44.06 breeds contempt.'" It gave me three. I like this one. So I'm 00:17:44.06\00:17:47.13 going to share it with you right now. "The more you are exposed --" that's what this little 00:17:47.13\00:17:51.37 proverb that's been around forever, "Familiarity breeds contempt" -- "The more you are 00:17:51.37\00:17:56.10 exposed to someone or something, the more bored you become and the less respect or appreciation 00:17:56.10\00:18:02.78 you may have for that person or thing." Does that sound about 00:18:02.78\00:18:06.92 right to you? Yeah, that's what it is. And by the way, that doesn't mean, of course, that 00:18:06.92\00:18:12.15 the longer you are married, the more boring it becomes." [ 00:18:12.15\00:18:17.73 Laughter ] Some of us have been married to the same person for a very long time, and it's getting 00:18:17.73\00:18:21.70 better every day. So you can't apply this to everything, but 00:18:21.70\00:18:26.84 our human tendency -- our human tendency is, the more we're exposed to some thing or the 00:18:26.84\00:18:33.31 more time we have with someone, we develop this, "Aw, come on, 00:18:33.31\00:18:40.38 again? Again?" I wonder if that's the case with the seventh-day Sabbath. That's what 00:18:40.38\00:18:44.55 I'm just thinking out loud with you about. Could it be that familiarity breeds contempt and 00:18:44.55\00:18:49.26 that unbeknown to us, there is this toxic contempt even within our very own souls, and we have 00:18:49.26\00:18:55.96 no clue? "Oh, yeah, it's the Sabbath again. 00:18:55.96\00:18:59.37 Whoo-hoo!" I'm talking about -- I'm talking to a campus that is 00:18:59.37\00:19:04.27 dominantly, on all three campuses, filled with people who have spent their whole lives, 00:19:04.27\00:19:09.58 every seventh day, saying, "It's the Sabbath. Yay." [ Light laughter ] Could it be our 00:19:09.58\00:19:16.69 familiarity with the Sabbath that's destroyed its meaning in our minds and in our lives, 00:19:16.69\00:19:21.19 in our experiences? I mean, we know what the Sabbath stands 00:19:21.19\00:19:24.33 for. "The maker of all things loves and wants me." Oh, I love 00:19:24.33\00:19:27.83 that. That's why there is a seventh-day Sabbath, because He said, at the end of that 00:19:27.83\00:19:31.27 Creation week, I got to have a week, just you and me together. I love the animals, but I love 00:19:31.27\00:19:36.14 you more. We'll be together." "God is a Being questing for 00:19:36.14\00:19:40.41 friends" -- that's the whole point. That's the whole point 00:19:40.41\00:19:44.15 of that book sitting right there on this pulpit. "I'm questing 00:19:44.15\00:19:50.05 for friends, and I'd love for you to be one of them." I get 00:19:50.05\00:19:53.32 it. I understand that Jesus is the Savior, Jesus is the Creator, Jesus is our forever 00:19:53.32\00:19:58.36 friend. And He designed the Sabbath to be a summit -- a summit experience that we meet 00:19:58.36\00:20:03.13 Him every seventh day in a way we cannot meet Him any other of the previous six days. 00:20:03.13\00:20:08.57 I get it. But there's one little part of the Sabbath that I'm not 00:20:08.57\00:20:17.15 sure we get. I'm not complaining about you. I'm not complaining 00:20:17.15\00:20:21.48 about me. I'm still trying to figure this out myself, but I'm 00:20:21.48\00:20:25.02 just wondering. I'm going to run three lines by you right now from Holy Scripture -- boom, 00:20:25.02\00:20:29.09 boom, boom. There's one word that will appear only in all 00:20:29.09\00:20:34.40 three. See if you can figure it out. The first one, of course, is the well-known, "Hey, this is 00:20:34.40\00:20:38.60 the end of Creation. Six days are over," God says, "Okay, this 00:20:38.60\00:20:43.81 was a great, great experience. The human race now is going." "Thus the heavens and the earth 00:20:43.81\00:20:48.04 were completed in all their vast array." Verse 2 of Genesis 2, 00:20:48.04\00:20:51.85 "By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he 00:20:51.85\00:20:57.65 rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it 00:20:57.65\00:21:02.76 he rested from all the work of creating that he had done." I mean, we know that. 00:21:02.76\00:21:07.76 There's no way you can look at this text, you won't get it yet. You're not -- You're not 00:21:07.76\00:21:12.53 noticing the word yet. I have to put another text. I'll probably 00:21:12.53\00:21:16.04 have to put both of them up. So here's another text. God's on top of Mount "Sai-- 00:21:16.04\00:21:20.51 now" -- Mount Sinai now -- with Moses, one of His dearest, 00:21:20.51\00:21:26.55 dearest friends. God has, just with His finger -- with His finger, as Moses describes it -- 00:21:26.55\00:21:32.22 carved in granite, stone, the 4th Commandment. "Remember the 00:21:32.22\00:21:36.99 Sabbath day, to keep it holy." He's just done that. And now he turns to Moses, and 00:21:36.99\00:21:42.10 he says, "Yo, I need you to go back to the people at the bottom of the mountain, and I want you 00:21:42.10\00:21:46.70 to tell them these words." So, this is Exodus 31:13. Here we 00:21:46.70\00:21:51.34 go. "'Say to the Israelites' -- Moses -- "You must observe My 00:21:51.34\00:21:56.31 Sabbaths."'" By the way, "My Sabbaths." God calls the Sabbath His own. Jesus says, "I'm Lord 00:21:56.31\00:22:01.32 of the Sabbath, and the Sabbath was made for you." But it's not 00:22:01.32\00:22:05.12 your day. It's My day." "Tell them to observe My Sabbath." 00:22:05.12\00:22:08.96 "This will be a sign between Me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am 00:22:08.96\00:22:14.60 the Lord, who makes you holy." You will don't get it. There's 00:22:14.60\00:22:20.24 one word that has appeared in each of these. Maybe the third one will help. Now he's with a 00:22:20.24\00:22:26.11 young prophet, in exile -- a young man named Ezekiel. He's reviewing the Creation 00:22:26.11\00:22:30.45 story with Ezekiel, and He makes this statement to Ezekiel. This 00:22:30.45\00:22:36.48 is Ezekiel 20:12. "Ezekiel, I gave them --" my people -- "my Sabbaths --" there it is again, 00:22:36.48\00:22:42.62 "these are Mine" -- "I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I 00:22:42.62\00:22:48.13 the Lord made them holy." Do you know one word that has appeared in all three of those? 00:22:48.13\00:22:53.17 What is it? Come on, call it out. I can't hear you. 00:22:53.17\00:22:56.00 >> "My." >> "Holy." >> Well, some of you are right, 00:22:56.00\00:22:58.81 and some of you are wrong. I'll not identify who's who. But some 00:22:58.81\00:23:03.68 of you got it. It's the word "holy." For us Americans and for us human beings, us in the 00:23:03.68\00:23:09.55 third-millennial culture that we live, "holy" is a bad word. It's a four-letter word, 00:23:09.55\00:23:15.46 and we're not happy with it. We don't like "holy." Nobody likes 00:23:15.46\00:23:18.39 "holy." "You can talk to me about love, talk to me about joy, talk to me about peace, 00:23:18.39\00:23:23.16 okay, okay. But don't talk to me about holy." What is our problem 00:23:23.16\00:23:27.50 with "holy"? I can't believe this. When there was no sin on the planet, there were no 00:23:27.50\00:23:31.31 sinners on the planet, God made this day holy. That can't be bad 00:23:31.31\00:23:37.38 news. Whatever it is, it's got to be good news, because there's 00:23:37.38\00:23:42.55 no bad news alive. Wow. What is this business? Come on, four-letter word, "holy." 00:23:42.55\00:23:45.82 What's up with that? Well...what's the big deal about 00:23:45.82\00:23:52.49 it, anyway? I mean, you know, "Dwight, don't spend a whole lot of time on this word, because I 00:23:52.49\00:23:56.46 really am not moved by the -- by the need for this word." Okay, I get it, but let me just 00:23:56.46\00:24:01.10 run one more line. We'll only go to the New Testament now. 00:24:01.10\00:24:03.94 Let me run another line by you. The book of Hebrews -- you ever heard of the book of Hebrews? 00:24:03.94\00:24:08.34 And wait a minute -- our faith community right now, all over this planet, is studying every 00:24:08.34\00:24:13.25 single seventh-day Sabbath, the book of Hebrews, written by our friend, Félix Cortez, in 00:24:13.25\00:24:18.12 that building right over there. Did a marvelous job. I'm being 00:24:18.12\00:24:23.06 blessed every week by his writings. Okay, so, this is Hebrews chapter 12. 00:24:23.06\00:24:27.40 Check this out. Paul writing, "Make every effort to live in peace with everyone." 00:24:27.40\00:24:31.70 "Come on, guys, get along, will ya?" That's what Paul is saying, 00:24:31.70\00:24:34.97 "Get along. Come on, love each other. Make every effort." 00:24:34.97\00:24:38.07 "Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be --" Ooh, to be what? -- 00:24:38.07\00:24:43.31 "holy." Well, what's the big deal about holy, Paul. 00:24:43.31\00:24:45.45 Come on, finish your sentence. He says, "I will." Without holiness no one will 00:24:45.45\00:24:50.95 ever see whom? That's Jesus. "Without holiness, you're 00:24:50.95\00:24:56.62 not going to see me." "Aw, You're -- You're such a grumpy 00:24:56.62\00:25:01.96 old Creator. That's what You are." "No. You won't see Me 00:25:01.96\00:25:09.00 without holiness." So, this isn't a little throwaway. No, this is -- this is a 00:25:09.00\00:25:12.94 big deal. What kind of a big deal is it? A.W. Tozer, a 00:25:12.94\00:25:18.85 long-ago writer, when I graduated from the seminary here, a friend of mine -- he now 00:25:18.85\00:25:22.82 sleeps in Jesus -- Lou Venden -- he gave me this book for graduation. It's a classic. 00:25:22.82\00:25:28.19 Let me put a line from that book on the screen here. "God is holy 00:25:28.19\00:25:34.10 --" God is holy -- four-letter word, there He is -- "God is holy and He has made holiness 00:25:34.10\00:25:39.60 the moral condition necessary to the health of His universe. Sin's temporary presence in the 00:25:39.60\00:25:44.97 world can only -- only accents this." Keep reading. 00:25:44.97\00:25:50.28 "Whatever is holy is healthy; evil is a moral sickness that must end --" like this 00:25:50.28\00:25:55.85 pandemic -- "ultimately in death." The pandemic is bad 00:25:55.85\00:26:00.36 news. True or false? 'Cause it's evil. That's why. It's evil. 00:26:00.36\00:26:06.19 Holiness is the moral language -- the moral language of this 00:26:06.19\00:26:11.43 universe, the universal descriptor of the Kingdom of God. And without holiness, hey 00:26:11.43\00:26:15.54 -- Jesus says, "Without holiness -- I'm sorry but that's the way we are -- you won't come here." 00:26:15.54\00:26:20.51 So I can't just blow this off. Mnh-mnh. And by the way, 00:26:20.51\00:26:25.68 speaking of the word "holy," do you know that this word appears, in its various forms, over 600 00:26:25.68\00:26:32.82 times in Holy Scripture. Over 600 times. And it must be a big 00:26:32.82\00:26:38.79 word. I mean, if the word appears 600 times, it's on God's mind. And guess what? 00:26:38.79\00:26:44.60 Not once is any other characteristic, any other attribute, any other quality of 00:26:44.60\00:26:51.01 God given the distinction that the word "holy" gets. You say, "Can you prove that to 00:26:51.01\00:26:55.91 me, Dwight?" I sure can. I'll prove it from the heart of 00:26:55.91\00:26:58.95 the Old Testament, and then we'll go to the end of the New Testament, and you are 00:26:58.95\00:27:02.48 going to discover something about the word "holy." Watch 00:27:02.48\00:27:05.39 this. Now, this is Isaiah chapter 6. Okay? "And the seraphim --" so, he's 00:27:05.39\00:27:08.89 the young -- because he's a young prophet, the young prophet is looking, "And the 00:27:08.89\00:27:12.79 seraphim --" these angels -- "were calling out to one 00:27:12.79\00:27:15.83 another." What are they calling out? >> Holy. >> "Holy, holy, 00:27:15.83\00:27:21.87 holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory." How many times do they 00:27:21.87\00:27:28.84 call out this one word that we're having a little bit of trouble with? How many times did 00:27:28.84\00:27:31.48 they call it out? >> Three. >> Three. 00:27:31.48\00:27:33.52 Watch this at the end of the Bible, in the mighty Apocalypse. "Day and night --" ooh, day and 00:27:33.52\00:27:38.29 night -- "the four living creatures --" these are the highest, by the way. 00:27:38.29\00:27:41.46 This is the highest order of angels in the universe. These are the top four -- the 00:27:41.46\00:27:45.39 four. "The four living creatures never stop saying --" whoa, here 00:27:45.39\00:27:49.66 it comes again -- "'Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to 00:27:49.66\00:27:57.87 come!'" Do you know that the Bible nowhere says, "God is 00:27:57.87\00:28:03.98 love, love, love." The Bible nowhere says, "God is righteous, 00:28:03.98\00:28:08.58 righteous, righteous." The Bible nowhere says, "God is just, 00:28:08.58\00:28:12.15 just, just; forgiving, forgiving, forgiving; merciful, merciful, merciful." No, no, no. 00:28:12.15\00:28:15.39 Only one quality of God is given this trifold, this triad 00:28:15.39\00:28:22.30 treatment. And it's "holy." His holiness. Wow. 00:28:22.30\00:28:27.44 We can't just run from this, because, obviously, the three verses we read show us that in 00:28:27.44\00:28:33.07 the heart of the seventh-day Sabbath, the -- the -- the iss-- 00:28:33.07\00:28:38.38 the reality is the holiness of God. Whoa. That just blows my 00:28:38.38\00:28:45.49 mind. God is holy. And by the way, the New Testament doesn't 00:28:45.49\00:28:51.56 stop there. It doesn't just say, "Oh, without holiness, you can't 00:28:51.56\00:28:54.93 come to heaven." No, it goes on. You just heard it a moment ago. 00:28:54.93\00:28:58.50 Darius read it from 1 Peter. Here it is. "But just as He who 00:28:58.50\00:29:04.71 called you is holy, so be holy --" this is 1 Peter 1:15 -- so be holy in all you do." 00:29:04.71\00:29:10.61 Keep reading, verse 16. "For it is written: 'Be holy, because I 00:29:10.61\00:29:17.35 am holy.'" That really blows you out of the water, because what God is, He says, "I want you 00:29:17.35\00:29:21.72 to be. I'm holy; you'll be holy." "No, God, you don't know 00:29:21.72\00:29:27.03 me. Whoo-hoo. You don't know me. And don't ask me to describe 00:29:27.03\00:29:31.43 myself to You. You don't know me. I cannot be what You are." Oh, that's true in many aspects. 00:29:31.43\00:29:38.41 You can't be God. Neither can I. You can't be your father. 00:29:38.41\00:29:42.21 Can you? You can try, but you'll never be your father. 00:29:42.21\00:29:45.71 Or your mother, by the way. You just can't. I can't be God. He's 00:29:45.71\00:29:50.25 God. He's the only God there is. And I'm not God. But wait a 00:29:50.25\00:29:54.06 minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. God is telling me, "Dwight, I want you to be holy, 00:29:54.06\00:29:57.59 because I'm holy." Whoa. What's going on here? 00:29:57.59\00:30:03.60 Jerry Bridges, in his stirring little book "The Pursuit of 00:30:03.60\00:30:08.64 Holiness," he writes, "To be holy is to be morally blameless." Oh, this is getting 00:30:08.64\00:30:14.34 worse as we go. Morally blameless? "To be holy is to be 00:30:14.34\00:30:18.51 morally blameless." Is is to be separated from sin and, therefore, consecrated 00:30:18.51\00:30:22.65 to God... Holiness is nothing less than conformity to the 00:30:22.65\00:30:27.09 character of God." Oh, my. You can't ask me to do that. 00:30:27.09\00:30:34.36 But He did. And he says it's in the heart and soul of the 00:30:34.36\00:30:41.40 seventh day of the week -- the Sabbath, the holy Sabbath. "Remember the holy Sabbath, 00:30:41.40\00:30:46.64 to keep it holy." Wow. [ Inhales sharply ] 00:30:46.64\00:30:53.75 I realize that this sounds rather scary now. "This -- We're 00:30:53.75\00:30:59.25 now into the impossibility territory. I mean, Dwight, just give it up, will ya?" 00:30:59.25\00:31:05.36 And I would say, "Yeah, you're right"... except your friend and 00:31:05.36\00:31:11.43 mine, Paul, comes along. We won't even look it up. Paul comes along and he says, 00:31:11.43\00:31:14.90 "I'm writing a letter to the people that live in Corinth. It happens to be a seaport town 00:31:14.90\00:31:18.44 full of STDs." You know what "STD" is, don't you? 00:31:18.44\00:31:21.28 Sexually transmitted diseases. It's full of them, and some of them are going to that church 00:31:21.28\00:31:25.51 that Paul planted. "Well, Paul, I want you to give a name to 00:31:25.51\00:31:29.55 those people." He says, "I will. If they come to Jesus..." "They 00:31:29.55\00:31:32.72 have." "...then I want you to call them saints." "What?!" 00:31:32.72\00:31:34.96 "I want you to call the Corinthians saints." "No!" 00:31:34.96\00:31:37.83 "Yes." And you know the word Paul uses? The holies. 00:31:37.83\00:31:42.23 He calls them the holies. "Hagios." In the Greek, it's 00:31:42.23\00:31:46.94 "the holies," "the holy ones." 00:31:46.94\00:31:49.17 Apparently, you don't have to be perfect... 00:31:49.20\00:31:55.68 to pursue holiness. There would be no Corinthian 00:31:55.68\00:31:59.51 church, and there would be no Andrews University. 00:31:59.51\00:32:04.42 So this can't be bad news. I mean, if God starts out with 00:32:04.42\00:32:07.32 saying, "This is the day. This is My holy day," it's 00:32:07.32\00:32:10.36 got to be wonderful news. We just got to figure out how 00:32:10.36\00:32:13.13 in the world does this turn into wonderful. 00:32:13.13\00:32:14.73 And I'm going to tell you how it turns into wonderful, because 00:32:14.73\00:32:17.70 we're going to shift -- we're going to shift the paradigm 00:32:17.70\00:32:19.67 right now. I want you to see that the word 00:32:19.67\00:32:21.47 "holy" is, indeed, a four-letter word. 00:32:21.47\00:32:23.37 We're going to misspell the word "holy." We've done this maybe 00:32:23.41\00:32:26.34 before, you and I. We're going to misspell the word "holy." 00:32:26.34\00:32:28.28 Instead of saying "holy," we're going to say "wholly," but spell 00:32:28.28\00:32:37.39 it another way. It's no longer a four-letter word. That ought to 00:32:37.39\00:32:41.19 make it good. This is "wholly." I have found that if I can move from the domain of moral -- 00:32:41.19\00:32:50.13 moral rectitude, which is just a big word for "moral specificity 00:32:50.13\00:32:57.27 and precision" -- in other words, sin -- if we can move from that, from rectitude to 00:32:57.27\00:33:06.11 relationship, we find out what's going on up here. So that because of this little 00:33:06.11\00:33:10.25 spelling change -- and I want you to do that in your mind -- I do it now all the time -- 00:33:10.25\00:33:14.36 I want you to do this in your mind. I want you to hear God say 00:33:14.36\00:33:17.83 to you what He says to me, only He'll use your name. But he says, "Dwight, I want to 00:33:17.83\00:33:21.83 tell you something, because I'm holy, and I want you to be holy. 00:33:21.83\00:33:25.87 Here's the deal. I am wholly yours, and I'm asking you to be wholly Mine. That's what I 00:33:25.87\00:33:34.44 mean." "Really, God?" "That's it. I'm wholly yours, and I want 00:33:34.44\00:33:39.98 you to be wholly Mine." Well, that makes it more possible. 00:33:39.98\00:33:48.96 At least, conceiving it. Hmm, now, wait a minute, wait a 00:33:48.96\00:33:55.16 minute, don't just blow that off. "I am wholly yours." In fact, let's put the -- Let's 00:33:55.16\00:33:58.87 just hang it in front of our eyes for a moment here. "I am wholly yours, and I want 00:33:58.87\00:34:03.94 you to be wholly Mine." Let that go deeper into your mind. 00:34:03.94\00:34:07.41 "I am wholly yours, and I want you to be wholly Mine." You know, that the Almighty God 00:34:07.41\00:34:13.42 Himself would say, "I'm wholly yours," that's enough to -- that's enough to blow you 00:34:13.42\00:34:17.02 out of the water, isn't it? I mean, that "I'm wholly yours"? "All of me for you"? 00:34:17.02\00:34:21.52 Come on. No, it is. That's the truth of Calvary. That's the truth of Jesus' death 00:34:21.52\00:34:26.93 on the Cross -- "I am wholly yours." I want to show you 00:34:26.93\00:34:31.33 something. Every child on this planet. We got wonderful children in this church. 00:34:31.33\00:34:34.94 Man. 00:34:34.94\00:34:36.57 Every child on this planet -- Doesn't matter what country 00:34:36.60\00:34:39.57 you're from or where your parents are from, if you're a 00:34:39.57\00:34:42.48 child, you know this motion. When I do this to a child 00:34:42.48\00:34:48.05 anywhere on earth -- and I've been to a lot of places on 00:34:48.05\00:34:50.99 earth -- If I see a little child in a room, and I go like this... 00:34:50.99\00:34:55.16 No, no, take me out of the picture. 00:34:55.16\00:34:57.73 When mother goes like this, when Daddy walks into the room and he sees his little girl, he 00:34:57.76\00:35:03.47 sees his little boy -- When Daddy walks into the room and he goes like this to his son, 00:35:03.47\00:35:07.24 what's he saying? "Come on, child... run to me, run to me! 00:35:07.24\00:35:13.31 I want to love on you. I want to hug you. Come here!" Isn't that 00:35:13.31\00:35:18.15 what outstretched arms mean? >> Yeah. >> "I want you to run to 00:35:18.15\00:35:21.38 me. Don't run from me. Come to me." When Jesus died -- When the 00:35:21.38\00:35:26.92 incarnate God dies, God makes sure that when He dies, they have His arms nailed this way, 00:35:26.92\00:35:32.69 so that every time you look at the Cross, those arms are facing 00:35:32.69\00:35:37.97 you. And you know what He's saying? "Run to me, child. Run 00:35:37.97\00:35:43.84 to me. I want to love on you. I want to hug you. Come here!" 00:35:43.84\00:35:48.88 Is that bad news or good news? >> Good news. >> "I am wholly 00:35:48.88\00:35:55.42 yours, and I want you to be wholly Mine." Hey, listen, guys, 00:35:55.42\00:36:00.52 if you don't like it, up in the balcony or down here, I got to tell you a little secret. 00:36:00.52\00:36:04.63 You're going to end up in front of this church someday with me, because you got a beautiful girl 00:36:04.63\00:36:09.86 beside you or a beautiful, handsome boy beside you. And you're going to say, "Hey, 00:36:09.86\00:36:13.84 Pastor, marry us, will ya?" And I will, after a few weeks of premarital counsel. 00:36:13.84\00:36:19.41 But when you stand up here, whoa, be careful. Don't you dare 00:36:19.41\00:36:23.28 come here unless you're ready for this. When you stand up here, I'm going to ask you, in 00:36:23.28\00:36:28.22 front of the witnesses in the building and the witnesses of heaven, to declare to her, "I am 00:36:28.22\00:36:34.06 wholly yours. And I want you to be wholly mine." 00:36:34.06\00:36:39.66 Every marriage begins with that pledge. Don't be ragging on God 00:36:39.66\00:36:45.00 about, "Oh, this is such a bad deal." Ha. You can't get married 00:36:45.00\00:36:48.97 without this deal -- "I am wholly yours, and I want you to 00:36:48.97\00:36:56.68 be wholly mine." And guess what? That's not only the truth of Calvary, that's the truth of the 00:36:56.68\00:37:00.78 seventh-day Sabbath, because it's the same Creator, who's now the Savior of the world. 00:37:00.78\00:37:07.19 His arms are nailed wide-open. But when He made the Sabbath, it was like He was saying, 00:37:07.19\00:37:11.76 "Come on, children. Come on! Run to me! 00:37:11.76\00:37:18.00 Let me love on you. Let me hug you." Wow. 00:37:18.00\00:37:24.64 And by the way, that's why God didn't make -- God did not make the Sabbath a place. 00:37:24.64\00:37:30.38 Because if it were a place, we'd all be in Mecca, worshipping 00:37:30.38\00:37:34.55 Him, right? "You got to go to Jerusalem. It's the only place 00:37:34.55\00:37:38.25 you can do it." God didn't make the Sabbath a place. He didn't even make it space, 00:37:38.25\00:37:42.96 because if He made it space, we'd all have to -- we all would have to be going to your church 00:37:42.96\00:37:48.13 to have worship. "No," he said, "I need something that's 00:37:48.13\00:37:54.40 universal. I need something that's global. I need something that is given equally to the 00:37:54.40\00:38:00.21 entire human race from the beginning of time to the end of time. And that something is 00:38:00.21\00:38:05.35 time. I'm going to holy-ize time. Wshooh." 00:38:05.35\00:38:10.12 "And when I have holy-ized time, man will never be able to 00:38:12.82\00:38:18.36 un-holy-ize it. Man will never be able to walk unto me and say, 'You know what? God, thank you 00:38:18.36\00:38:21.96 for doing the seventh day. We want the first day. Please, it's 00:38:21.96\00:38:25.20 more convenient now. The culture is this way. We don't want to 00:38:25.20\00:38:28.70 stand out and have to get serious about this holiness thing. Just let us do this.' 00:38:28.70\00:38:32.77 Well, how can you? Wshooh! I've already done it on the 00:38:32.77\00:38:37.31 seventh day. Only one day. And it's the seventh one." 00:38:37.31\00:38:44.39 That's why it's a big deal, folks. There's a lot of 00:38:44.39\00:38:48.26 confusion going around, these days. Nobody's sure. Some are 00:38:48.26\00:38:51.46 saying, "It really doesn't matter. Folks, it just doesn't matter." Okay, you can live by 00:38:51.46\00:38:55.63 that. [ Chuckles ] "God wrote it with His finger, but it really 00:38:55.63\00:38:58.70 doesn't matter. It's not that big a deal." Oh, come on. It's a 00:38:58.70\00:39:04.71 big deal. Wow. "I am wholly yours. And I want you to be 00:39:04.71\00:39:08.91 wholly Mine." Abraham Joshua Heschel, in his classic essay on the Sabbath -- and that's the 00:39:08.91\00:39:15.72 title of it, "The Sabbath" -- "To observe the seventh day does not mean merely to obey or to 00:39:15.72\00:39:21.69 conform to the strictness of a divine command." Keep reading. "To observe is to celebrate the 00:39:21.69\00:39:26.90 creation of the world and to create the seventh day all over again" -- I love that -- "the 00:39:26.90\00:39:32.53 majesty of holiness in time." And I love that phrase -- "the majesty of holiness in time." 00:39:32.53\00:39:38.81 That's what God did. "I put holiness in time. It's not in 00:39:38.81\00:39:45.18 space, it's not a place. It's in time. Everybody can have it. 00:39:45.18\00:39:52.72 And I want everybody to have it." Wow. 00:39:52.72\00:39:56.59 Heschel is right. Well, didn't we just read it? It was a moment 00:39:56.59\00:40:01.76 ago. Come on. "Dwight, bring the text back up again, one more 00:40:01.76\00:40:04.33 time." Okay. "I have given you the Sabbath, so that you may know that I am the Lord, who 00:40:04.33\00:40:10.61 makes you holy." The Sabbath is a sign that God makes you wholly His, and makes me wholly His. 00:40:10.61\00:40:17.65 Is it a sign that I make myself holy? Yes or no? 00:40:17.65\00:40:21.02 >> No? >> Of course not. The Sabbath is not a sign that I 00:40:21.02\00:40:24.09 make myself holy. The Sabbath is a sign that the Creator makes me 00:40:24.09\00:40:27.46 holy. The Creator makes me holy. "I'm wholly yours. I want you to 00:40:27.46\00:40:32.69 be wholly Mine." Lookit, if I can do that -- if I can do that with Karen -- and we did -- got 00:40:32.69\00:40:39.23 it on old Super 8 film now, so I can never back out. "Dwight, did 00:40:39.23\00:40:42.17 you really make that promise?" I did. If I can do that, and you 00:40:42.17\00:40:45.44 will if you haven't, then God has the right to do the same -- 00:40:45.44\00:40:51.38 "I'm wholly yours. You be wholly Mine." And there's only one day of the week that declares that 00:40:51.38\00:40:57.62 -- only one. It's the one He chose. It's the seventh day. 00:40:57.62\00:41:04.73 Nothing has changed on the calendar, nothing has changed in 00:41:04.73\00:41:08.03 time. It's still the same day. Wow. Okay. 00:41:08.03\00:41:14.04 So, what does that mean? That means there's some power embedded in this day. 00:41:14.04\00:41:19.81 Hey, my friend Sakae Kubo, the professor here years ago -- some of you knew him -- had the 00:41:19.81\00:41:25.51 privilege of knowing him -- in his book "God Meets Man" -- this is good -- "The Sabbath has 00:41:25.51\00:41:30.02 no meaning at all unless creative power accomplishes its result in the life of the one 00:41:30.02\00:41:35.89 who observes the day." There's something -- There's creative power from its Maker -- 00:41:35.89\00:41:40.96 the Maker of all things, Who loves me. If the Maker is not 00:41:40.96\00:41:44.57 having His creative power in me, then there's no -- who needs the 00:41:44.57\00:41:48.00 Sabbath? Hey, listen carefully. The Sabbath is not Fourth of 00:41:48.00\00:41:50.74 July. "Yo, I love Fourth of July! I love hot dogs. I love -- 00:41:50.74\00:41:55.14 I love corn on the cob. I love watching fireworks at the end of 00:41:55.14\00:41:58.61 the day. I love the Fourth of July." The Sabbath is not the 00:41:58.61\00:42:01.88 Fourth of July. It's not Christmas. It's not Thanksgiving. It's not a 00:42:01.88\00:42:08.79 holiday. It is the only holy day... of every week. By the 00:42:08.79\00:42:18.87 way, that's what "holiday" means. They took the two words "holy day" and they said, "Well, 00:42:18.87\00:42:21.84 we have so many holy days around here, we'll just call them 00:42:21.84\00:42:24.51 'holidays.'" The Sabbath is not a holiday. That is secular. The Sabbath is a holy day. 00:42:24.51\00:42:29.38 That is sacred. And there's a world of difference, because it 00:42:29.38\00:42:34.22 has God inside it. You can feel the sizzling power of the 00:42:34.22\00:42:40.12 Creator Himself embedded in His day. "It's all about Jesus. You don't have to give me a 00:42:40.12\00:42:44.36 lecture. It's all about Jesus." I understand that. 00:42:44.36\00:42:47.13 Wow. Oh, come on, Kubo, keep going. "Okay," Kubo says, "I 00:42:47.13\00:42:52.53 will." "Holiness --" Oh, this is going to make you think. You can't blow this one by. 00:42:52.53\00:42:55.40 You won't get it the first time, but that's okay. "Holiness of 00:42:55.40\00:43:00.98 being must match holiness of time. Holiness of time --" his emphasis -- "Holiness of time 00:43:00.98\00:43:08.68 must become holiness in time." Something feels very right about that sentence, but it took 00:43:08.68\00:43:16.32 me a long time to figure it out. Then, I found another sentence he wrote, a couple pages later. 00:43:16.32\00:43:23.16 "Ooh, ooh, ooh, I got it." So I'm going to add that sentence. 00:43:23.16\00:43:27.24 "The Sabbath does not stand simply for holiness of time or holy time, but holiness in time, 00:43:27.24\00:43:34.78 or holy people." Yep, it is holy time. The majesty of holiness in 00:43:34.78\00:43:39.18 time -- of course it is. But it's not just about time. It's 00:43:39.18\00:43:43.79 about people. "I give myself wholly to you. Please, you give yourself wholly to Me. 00:43:43.79\00:43:50.56 It's you and Me. It's all about you and Me." Is that bad news or 00:43:50.56\00:43:56.26 good news? That's the greatest news in the universe. He wants 00:43:56.26\00:44:00.10 time with me. And so He gives me that day. "It's going to be you 00:44:00.10\00:44:03.94 and Me together." And next week, by the way, we're getting down to brass tacks. "Now, come on, 00:44:03.94\00:44:07.18 Dwight, how do we really do this?" We'll talk about that next week. "Come on, how do we 00:44:07.18\00:44:10.71 really do it on a campus?" We'll talk about that next week. "I've given you this day, 00:44:10.71\00:44:16.02 embedded Myself in it. Come to Me. Run to Me. 00:44:16.02\00:44:20.52 Let Me hold -- Let Me hug you. Let Me love on you." That's what 00:44:20.52\00:44:25.39 the Sabbath is. It's about relationship, holy people, people who are wholly His. 00:44:25.39\00:44:30.67 That's all it's saying. "You can't get to heaven without us." 00:44:30.67\00:44:33.17 Oh, don't get me going on that. I'm not worried about that, because there's one verse in the 00:44:33.17\00:44:37.91 Bible, came to me while Pastor Ben was praying in second 00:44:37.91\00:44:40.84 service. So those of you who were sitting up here saw a little bit of movement going 00:44:40.84\00:44:44.65 back and forth, because I sent word up, "Hey, I need this text right now and these notes." 00:44:44.65\00:44:48.52 And they got it. We got an incredible media team. On the spot, they make changes. 00:44:48.52\00:44:54.72 And so we're adding this -- 1 Corinthians 1:30. I love this 00:44:54.72\00:44:59.29 text. Watch this. This will knock your socks off. Paul is writing to the saints who used 00:44:59.29\00:45:05.77 to have STDs, okay? So we're talking about, you know, mm-hmm. "It is because of Him that you 00:45:05.77\00:45:11.17 are in Christ Jesus, who has become for you and me -- He has become for us wisdom from 00:45:11.17\00:45:17.25 God -- that is --" Paul says He's become for us -- "our righteousness --" He's become 00:45:17.25\00:45:23.39 for us -- what's the next word? >> Holiness. 00:45:23.39\00:45:26.22 >> Our "holiness, and he's become our redemption." He's 00:45:26.22\00:45:31.13 everything. "I'll be your holiness. Let me become holiness for you. I am wholly yours. 00:45:31.13\00:45:37.93 You be wholly Mine. I'll take care of it all." Hey, is that 00:45:37.93\00:45:43.57 good news or what? "I am your holiness." Wow. Talking about 00:45:43.57\00:45:50.61 power. Whoo! [ Chuckles ] Hey, have you driven down by the dam here in the village of 00:45:50.61\00:45:55.08 Berrien Springs? Anybody driven down by the dam lately? 00:45:55.08\00:45:58.19 Come on. Do you know that they spent, like, months -- I don't 00:45:58.19\00:46:02.42 know how long -- but they have been constructing this very classy-looking electrical 00:46:02.42\00:46:06.39 substation. Have you driven down there? It's beautiful. 00:46:06.39\00:46:10.07 It's a work of art. And they spent months. But I'll tell you 00:46:10.07\00:46:14.54 this. There is a chain-link fence around it right now, and repeated warnings affixed to it 00:46:14.54\00:46:20.68 that declare, "Danger. High voltage." [ Chuckles ] 00:46:20.68\00:46:26.82 Sometimes -- it's true -- Sometimes you can hear the sizzle of the power. 00:46:26.82\00:46:32.65 Jesus says, "Hey, in the beginning, I gave you the Sabbath, with Me in it. 00:46:35.59\00:46:42.60 Power. And it will sizzle with the evidence I can change 00:46:42.60\00:46:52.94 anything that needs changing in your life." Remember, holiness 00:46:52.94\00:47:01.05 is what opens the door to the universe. "I am your holiness. You know that room that you've 00:47:01.05\00:47:08.76 been hiding from Me in your heart? Of course, you can't hide 00:47:08.76\00:47:12.46 it from Me. I've known about it. I'm waiting for the day when you 00:47:12.46\00:47:14.86 say, 'Lord, You can have that room.' You know that little 00:47:14.86\00:47:20.84 corner of your life that you've been hiding from Me? You haven't hid a thing from Me. 00:47:20.84\00:47:25.04 I'm waiting for the day that you say, 'Lord, You may have this corner of my life.' 00:47:25.04\00:47:29.51 Just give it to Me. I am wholly yours. And I need you to be 00:47:29.51\00:47:34.95 wholly Mine. I'll take care of everything. I am your holiness." 00:47:34.95\00:47:40.72 [ Chuckling ] Wow. Man, come on, guys. Help me out here. 00:47:40.72\00:47:45.09 Is this good news or is this bad news? I'm telling you, it's the 00:47:45.09\00:47:48.50 greatest news. It's the greatest news that is not known today, 00:47:48.50\00:47:53.34 because the world has blown the seventh day out of the water. Yep, "Aw, we don't need 00:47:53.34\00:47:57.81 that day. We have our own." And there is a church on this 00:47:57.81\00:48:01.21 planet today that says, "Yep, we did it." And everybody else 00:48:01.21\00:48:05.41 says, "Well, see, that's why we have another one." Come on. 00:48:05.41\00:48:09.52 You can't be serious. This is the truth that God is going to 00:48:09.52\00:48:16.42 begin to percolate. He'll find ways. 00:48:16.42\00:48:19.19 He'll find ways to make sure the truth about the Creator will 00:48:19.23\00:48:24.70 return one last time, even to academia. 00:48:24.70\00:48:29.34 Some of you were placed in academia because you're part of 00:48:29.34\00:48:31.64 a strategic movement from God to tell the truth. 00:48:31.64\00:48:37.78 Don't you belittle that. Don't you say, "I'm not going to 00:48:37.78\00:48:40.85 be concerned with that. I teach in a parochial school, 00:48:40.85\00:48:42.85 and that's all I have to worry about -- just to make sure these 00:48:42.85\00:48:45.19 kids know what's right and wrong." 00:48:45.19\00:48:46.79 No, that's not enough. You have colleagues 00:48:46.79\00:48:49.09 all over this planet. 00:48:49.09\00:48:50.46 And you have credibility. I was talking with a lawyer, this last 00:48:50.49\00:48:55.23 week. He showed me the law firm he belongs to. My Lord. 00:48:55.23\00:49:00.07 Washington, D.C. One of our members here belongs to that 00:49:00.07\00:49:06.91 firm. Why is he in the firm? [ Chuckles ] Because God needs His 00:49:06.91\00:49:10.85 agents everywhere. Don't you ever apologize for being a 00:49:10.85\00:49:14.65 Sabbatarian. Mnh-mnh. Don't you ever apologize for being a 00:49:14.65\00:49:18.75 Sabbatarian. You're that for a reason, because of Jesus. And He needs you to live out the 00:49:18.75\00:49:23.96 truth of that holy day that is wholly His, even as He is wholly 00:49:23.96\00:49:31.80 yours. "Live it for Me." That's it. I'm stopping this right 00:49:31.80\00:49:37.84 here. It's the good news of the Sabbath that we've forgotten. It's the good news of the 00:49:40.31\00:49:44.41 Sabbath we have forgotten. It's a holy day. "I'm wholly yours. 00:49:44.41\00:49:51.19 And you, please, be wholly Mine." I think it's beautiful. 00:49:51.19\00:49:56.69 Just between you and me, I think it's beautiful. And I want it to 00:49:56.69\00:50:02.66 be beautiful in your life and in your heart right now. Yeah, as 00:50:02.66\00:50:07.84 simple as saying, "Jesus, wholly Yours, I am. Help me to find how this day accentuates that gift 00:50:07.84\00:50:19.35 -- the gift of You." Let's pray. Oh, God, oh, Christ, 00:50:19.35\00:50:24.52 I am wholly Yours. We get it. Calvary's outstretched arms. 00:50:24.52\00:50:28.02 Who could argue with that? And for You to then turn around -- 00:50:28.02\00:50:33.13 this is nothing unusual at all -- every wedding does it -- for you to turn around and say, "I 00:50:33.13\00:50:37.50 need you to be wholly Mine," on behalf of all of us -- because there's not a soul right now, in 00:50:37.50\00:50:45.91 this sanctuary, on this livestream, that is not saying, "I want to be wholly His, I want 00:50:45.91\00:50:54.78 to be wholly Jesus', belong wholly to Him" -- oh, Christ, 00:50:54.78\00:51:04.79 draw us near. And as You do -- maybe in the end, this is what 00:51:04.79\00:51:12.23 you want -- draw us near so that we become more and more like 00:51:12.23\00:51:21.24 You. Here is the patience of the saints. Here are they that keep 00:51:23.35\00:51:29.05 the Commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. You will make 00:51:29.05\00:51:39.89 that line come true by Your grace, in the end, that all the 00:51:39.89\00:51:48.07 people say "Amen." Yeah, amen, amen. Alright, singers, come on 00:51:48.07\00:51:51.94 out here. Come on out here, singers. We got to end with this great old gospel hymn. 00:51:51.94\00:51:56.64 While they're coming up, let me just remind you that we have an electronic Connect Card today. 00:51:56.64\00:52:02.28 You just go to our -- Get your little cellphone out and 269-281-2345 -- our code today. 00:52:02.28\00:52:09.32 Just text the word "Banner4" and it'll take you to this Connect 00:52:09.32\00:52:15.40 Card. Let me just show you this before the singers get their 00:52:15.43\00:52:18.47 voices going here. "To the One who declares He is 00:52:18.47\00:52:20.97 wholly mine, I wish to respond, 'I am wholly Yours.'" 00:52:20.97\00:52:24.41 I know that's your desire. And that's mine. 00:52:24.41\00:52:26.34 You put a checkmark there. Now, lookit, this is a little 00:52:26.34\00:52:28.61 different. "I want to find the holiness of 00:52:28.61\00:52:30.58 Jesus in the seventh-day Sabbath and begin keeping the Sabbath 00:52:30.58\00:52:33.28 with Him. Please pray for me." 00:52:33.28\00:52:35.42 If you put a checkmark there, and I have your contact -- there 00:52:35.42\00:52:38.15 will be a place to give me an e-mail address -- I will be 00:52:38.15\00:52:40.72 personally praying for you. I will personally pray for you. 00:52:40.72\00:52:44.19 You've never kept the Sabbath -- seventh-day Sabbath -- before, 00:52:44.19\00:52:47.96 but you say, "Listen, I'm just going to try it," my friend, God 00:52:47.96\00:52:51.77 will honor that. You're not going to have a 00:52:51.77\00:52:53.87 hard time, trust me. We'll talk more about this 00:52:53.87\00:52:56.30 next week. Okay, box number 3, "Please send 00:52:56.30\00:52:58.74 me the Bible study material on the Sabbath." 00:52:58.74\00:53:01.31 You put a checkmark there, and give me an e-mail address, we'll 00:53:01.31\00:53:04.21 send it to you. And finally, number 4, "I want 00:53:04.21\00:53:06.75 to be baptized and follow Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath." 00:53:06.75\00:53:10.02 Hallelujah. Why not? You've been putting it off. 00:53:10.02\00:53:13.39 You've been saying, "No, I'm not going to go to Jesus yet." 00:53:13.39\00:53:16.06 My friend, this is the year that you and Jesus, He who gave 00:53:16.06\00:53:21.20 Himself wholly for you... Baptism says, "I'm wholly 00:53:21.20\00:53:24.37 Yours." It's a beautiful service. 00:53:24.37\00:53:26.17 You're not going to be baptized next week, but if you'll put 00:53:26.17\00:53:29.10 your name and give me an e-mail address, we'll start planning 00:53:29.10\00:53:31.57 with you. We'll make it the happiest day 00:53:31.57\00:53:33.27 of your life. 00:53:33.27\00:53:34.51 Alright, "Take Time to Be Holy." Come on, that's a great gospel 00:53:34.54\00:53:37.85 song.
