00:25:00.73\00:25:03.16 Well, let me read you another parable. 00:25:03.20\00:25:06.74 I know you've never heard this one. 00:25:06.77\00:25:08.14 All right. 00:25:08.17\00:25:09.50 So, this is a parable written by Michael Zigarelli 00:25:09.54\00:25:13.44 and it appeared in the journal of research 00:25:13.48\00:25:15.01 in Christian Education. 00:25:15.04\00:25:17.51 And it goes like this. 00:25:17.55\00:25:18.88 May I read it in your hearing? 00:25:18.91\00:25:21.35 Once upon a time, God created a nation, 00:25:21.38\00:25:24.29 that would be the United States of America. 00:25:24.32\00:25:28.06 Once upon a time, God created a nation 00:25:28.09\00:25:30.29 and seeded it with 4,146 institutions. 00:25:30.33\00:25:34.33 Last night, I found out that the number now 00:25:34.36\00:25:36.10 is 6,502 00:25:36.13\00:25:38.63 institutions of higher learning, 00:25:38.67\00:25:41.80 universities, colleges, seminaries, 00:25:41.84\00:25:44.01 and other post-secondary schools. 00:25:44.04\00:25:45.97 Why did he see the nation? 00:25:46.01\00:25:47.61 Ah, God did it to teach His children truth 00:25:47.64\00:25:50.71 and how to apply it rightly, 00:25:50.75\00:25:52.65 but some of these institutional seeds 00:25:52.68\00:25:56.48 fell on a path and were stolen by birds 00:25:56.52\00:25:58.85 before they could ever take root. 00:25:58.89\00:26:00.82 And some of the seeds fell on rocks and sprang up. 00:26:00.86\00:26:04.23 But then withered for lack of moisture 00:26:04.26\00:26:06.70 and other seeds grew amongst thorns 00:26:06.73\00:26:09.40 and were choked to death before they could flourish. 00:26:09.43\00:26:11.97 And some of God's seeds though fell on good soil 00:26:12.00\00:26:15.04 and took root and grew strong, yielding a harvest 100 times 00:26:15.07\00:26:18.67 what was planted. 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.54 What is he talking about? 00:26:20.58\00:26:21.98 He goes on, let me follow Jesus' lead 00:26:22.01\00:26:24.61 and explain the parable. 00:26:24.65\00:26:25.98 Okay. Here comes the explanation now. 00:26:26.01\00:26:28.45 The schools on the path 00:26:28.48\00:26:31.29 that the ravens picked up 00:26:31.32\00:26:32.75 are those that were founded as secular institutions, 00:26:32.79\00:26:36.62 schools stolen away from God at their nascence. 00:26:36.66\00:26:40.20 And that have never attempted 00:26:40.23\00:26:41.56 to educate people from God's point of view. 00:26:41.60\00:26:43.77 The schools on the rocks are those church related 00:26:43.80\00:26:46.90 or historically Christian schools 00:26:46.94\00:26:48.80 that were founded to honor God. 00:26:48.84\00:26:50.87 And that pursued this mission for a while, 00:26:50.91\00:26:53.58 but whose weak roots 00:26:53.61\00:26:55.18 caused the original mission to die. 00:26:55.21\00:26:57.35 Now they are indistinguishable from secular schools. 00:26:57.38\00:27:02.52 And the schools amongst the thorns 00:27:02.55\00:27:04.92 are those Christian schools 00:27:04.95\00:27:06.29 that still have an overtly Christian mission statement. 00:27:06.32\00:27:09.09 But whose mission has been choked out 00:27:09.12\00:27:11.06 by many factors, 00:27:11.09\00:27:12.56 fear that they will lose prospective students 00:27:12.59\00:27:14.80 if they are too overtly Christian. 00:27:14.83\00:27:17.30 Faculty trained in secular schools 00:27:17.33\00:27:19.37 who cannot or will not teach from a Christian perspective, 00:27:19.40\00:27:23.81 open admissions policies that 00:27:23.84\00:27:25.74 culminate in a highly secular student 00:27:25.77\00:27:28.08 culture and so on. 00:27:28.11\00:27:29.54 The thorns are as diverse as they are deadly. 00:27:29.58\00:27:33.31 Then there are the schools planted in good soil, 00:27:33.35\00:27:37.19 Christian institutions fully committed 00:27:37.22\00:27:39.65 to honoring God in all they do, 00:27:39.69\00:27:41.49 where there is a primacy of spiritual formation 00:27:41.52\00:27:43.93 and education from a Christian perspective 00:27:43.96\00:27:46.33 and where a faculty members 00:27:46.36\00:27:47.70 endeavor to teaching right from the same posture. 00:27:47.73\00:27:50.33 As a result, 00:27:50.37\00:27:51.70 these institutions develop students' 00:27:51.73\00:27:53.84 heart and minds toward the goal 00:27:53.87\00:27:56.60 of graduating students who are more like Jesus 00:27:56.64\00:27:59.17 than when they first enrolled. 00:27:59.21\00:28:01.14 The legions of alumni from these good soils schools 00:28:01.18\00:28:03.91 are in their various vocations, 00:28:03.95\00:28:06.28 serving people and leading change 00:28:06.31\00:28:08.25 in ways that please God, 00:28:08.28\00:28:09.65 as are the faculty through their scholarly, 00:28:09.68\00:28:12.09 popular press, artistic 00:28:12.12\00:28:14.12 volunteer and practitioner work. 00:28:14.16\00:28:16.22 Indeed, these schools are yielding 00:28:16.26\00:28:18.36 a harvest 100 times 00:28:18.39\00:28:21.36 what God sowed, the end. 00:28:21.40\00:28:25.17 Hmm. Hmm. 00:28:25.20\00:28:28.50 Two parables. 00:28:28.54\00:28:30.37 Jesus' parable that reminds us everyone is called 00:28:30.41\00:28:35.21 and Zigarelli's parable that reminds us 00:28:35.24\00:28:39.61 that everyone is called to mission. 00:28:39.65\00:28:43.75 In fact, as we went back to Jesus' parable, 00:28:43.79\00:28:45.92 we find out that's precisely the point His, 00:28:45.95\00:28:48.19 two parables teaching us 00:28:48.22\00:28:50.83 that when you're called by the Master of the vineyard, 00:28:50.86\00:28:53.90 you are called to work with Him in His vineyard. 00:28:53.93\00:28:57.40 That's what it means to be called, 00:28:57.43\00:29:00.84 to share His mission. 00:29:00.87\00:29:03.27 Yes, you are, Jesus says to you, 00:29:03.30\00:29:05.17 yes I'm talking to you, boy, I'm talking to you, girl. 00:29:05.21\00:29:07.88 Yes, you are called, but it is to help Me 00:29:07.91\00:29:10.71 finish My harvest in My vineyard. 00:29:10.75\00:29:13.48 Now here's the question. 00:29:13.52\00:29:14.85 What is this, this Michael Zigarelli really 00:29:14.88\00:29:17.55 trying to tell us? 00:29:17.59\00:29:18.92 Well, let's let him speak for himself. 00:29:18.95\00:29:21.52 God entrust students to His universities, 00:29:21.56\00:29:24.26 His universities. 00:29:24.29\00:29:25.63 And I like that word entrust by the way. 00:29:25.66\00:29:27.70 In a few hours, this place is going to be 00:29:27.73\00:29:29.20 crawling with students. 00:29:29.23\00:29:30.67 They've already been coming in. 00:29:30.70\00:29:32.60 But I liked that that notion God entrust. 00:29:32.63\00:29:35.50 Any student who comes here 00:29:35.54\00:29:36.87 has been entrusted by God to this institution. 00:29:36.91\00:29:39.51 God entrust students to His universities and calls. 00:29:39.54\00:29:42.64 I like that word calls 00:29:42.68\00:29:44.01 because everyone is called we're reminding ourselves. 00:29:44.05\00:29:45.98 "And calls the trustees, administrators, 00:29:46.01\00:29:49.35 faculty, and staff to be faithful stewards, 00:29:49.38\00:29:51.99 to equip students to serve with excellence 00:29:52.02\00:29:54.89 in the vocation to which God calls them." 00:29:54.92\00:29:58.79 Wow. He goes on by the way. 00:29:58.83\00:30:00.96 "It is the role of the Christian university 00:30:01.00\00:30:02.96 to graduate people who love what God loves 00:30:03.00\00:30:06.50 and as such are increasingly becoming 00:30:06.53\00:30:08.80 like Jesus Christ." 00:30:08.84\00:30:11.34 Now look at, I go out before the service 00:30:11.37\00:30:12.94 begins both services and I kind of circulate around and I know 00:30:12.97\00:30:16.38 we have parents who are here with their freshmen children 00:30:16.41\00:30:19.65 sitting beside them right now. 00:30:19.68\00:30:21.48 And I can't think I ever met some of you. 00:30:21.52\00:30:23.72 I can't think a parent 00:30:23.75\00:30:25.42 think of a parent here who would say, "No, no, 00:30:25.45\00:30:27.19 I don't care if a university has that kind of an ambition. 00:30:27.22\00:30:30.99 Are you kidding?" 00:30:31.03\00:30:32.36 There's no parent alive that doesn't say, 00:30:32.39\00:30:33.73 "No, that's it, that's it right there. 00:30:33.76\00:30:35.43 That's why we're sending our children 00:30:35.46\00:30:36.80 to Andrews University. 00:30:36.83\00:30:38.17 'Cause of that, you're gonna graduate students 00:30:38.20\00:30:40.17 who love what God loves 00:30:40.20\00:30:41.84 and as such are increasingly becoming 00:30:41.87\00:30:43.67 like Jesus Christ." 00:30:43.71\00:30:46.57 And that's a no-brainer, isn't it? 00:30:46.61\00:30:48.84 And we're kind of scratching our mind. 00:30:48.88\00:30:50.21 Well, maybe that's not what we know, 00:30:50.25\00:30:52.05 of course. 00:30:52.08\00:30:53.42 But Zigarelli pushes a bit harder 00:30:53.45\00:30:56.69 when he describes the challenge 00:30:56.72\00:30:58.05 of a faith based university like ours, 00:30:58.09\00:31:00.16 the challenge we face. 00:31:00.19\00:31:01.82 Here we go. These are his words. 00:31:01.86\00:31:03.66 "There are those Christian schools 00:31:03.69\00:31:06.29 that still have an overtly Christian." 00:31:06.33\00:31:08.00 I'm gonna say Adventists. All right? 00:31:08.03\00:31:09.80 And overtly Adventist mission statement. 00:31:09.83\00:31:12.20 But whose mission has been choked out 00:31:12.23\00:31:14.20 by many factors, 00:31:14.24\00:31:15.70 fear that they will lose perspective students 00:31:15.74\00:31:17.87 if they're too overtly Christian." 00:31:17.91\00:31:20.31 Two Adventists back off just a little. 00:31:20.34\00:31:24.21 Hmm. 00:31:24.25\00:31:25.61 "Faculty trained in secular schools 00:31:25.65\00:31:27.42 who cannot, or who choose not 00:31:27.45\00:31:29.75 to teach from a Christian Adventist perspective. 00:31:29.78\00:31:34.66 Open admissions policies that culminate 00:31:34.69\00:31:36.83 in a highly secular student culture 00:31:36.86\00:31:39.46 and so on." 00:31:39.49\00:31:41.56 Whoa, hey listen. 00:31:41.60\00:31:44.53 I've lived around here long enough, 00:31:44.57\00:31:46.77 just long enough to know 00:31:46.80\00:31:48.54 that we cannot help on this campus. 00:31:48.57\00:31:50.64 We cannot help, but feel the pressures 00:31:50.67\00:31:52.91 that the pressures rather from an essentially godless 00:31:52.94\00:31:56.21 and secular culture out there that America's become, 00:31:56.24\00:31:59.75 a culture that rules a day in much of academia today. 00:31:59.78\00:32:02.92 It rules a day in much of career building today, 00:32:02.95\00:32:05.62 much of socialization, much of entertainment 00:32:05.65\00:32:08.22 in an essentially godless and secular culture. 00:32:08.26\00:32:12.06 I understand that. 00:32:12.09\00:32:14.20 There's a sea around us. 00:32:14.23\00:32:17.00 I also understand that it is tough. 00:32:17.03\00:32:20.70 It is tough 00:32:20.74\00:32:22.07 when you deal with a generation that doesn't seem 00:32:22.10\00:32:24.34 to enjoy reading anything lengthy or reasoned. 00:32:24.37\00:32:28.21 That prefers sound bites, the size of social media posts 00:32:28.24\00:32:31.48 towards education and struggles to find a way 00:32:31.51\00:32:34.22 to even read scripture, 00:32:34.25\00:32:35.58 let alone apply it to life and lifestyle. 00:32:35.62\00:32:39.35 Trust me, you're not the only one 00:32:39.39\00:32:41.86 dealing with them in your classes, 00:32:41.89\00:32:45.43 every Sabbath. 00:32:45.46\00:32:47.73 So, what do we do now? 00:32:47.76\00:32:51.50 Ah. 00:32:51.53\00:32:52.87 But everyone is called means, here's the good news. 00:32:52.90\00:32:57.34 Everyone is called means that we all share. 00:32:57.37\00:33:01.04 It's not on your shoulders alone, 00:33:01.08\00:33:02.54 it's not on my shoulders alone, 00:33:02.58\00:33:03.91 it's not on anybody's shoulders alone. 00:33:03.95\00:33:05.28 We all share the mission of Christ 00:33:05.31\00:33:07.95 to help God connect with this generation. 00:33:07.98\00:33:11.15 God is so... 00:33:11.19\00:33:12.62 He is so excited about Gen Zers. 00:33:12.65\00:33:16.42 He just loves them to death. 00:33:16.46\00:33:19.09 Gen Zers, this is, He says, guys 00:33:19.13\00:33:21.43 I'm entrusting you the best on the planet. 00:33:21.46\00:33:25.37 Wow. 00:33:25.40\00:33:26.80 Everyone is called. 00:33:26.84\00:33:28.57 And by the way, by the way, everyone means every one. 00:33:28.60\00:33:33.98 Everyone means every one. 00:33:34.01\00:33:35.88 We're talking about that smiling cafeteria worker, 00:33:35.91\00:33:38.11 God bless her. 00:33:38.15\00:33:39.55 We're talking about that friendly 00:33:39.58\00:33:41.72 custodial employee. 00:33:41.75\00:33:43.15 God bless him. 00:33:43.18\00:33:44.55 We're talking about that wonderfully helpful 00:33:44.59\00:33:46.82 library assistant. 00:33:46.86\00:33:48.19 God bless them all. 00:33:48.22\00:33:49.62 Everyone means every one. 00:33:49.66\00:33:51.89 You know why? 00:33:51.93\00:33:53.36 It means we are all called. 00:33:53.40\00:33:58.37 I don't care where you are. 00:33:58.40\00:33:59.73 I just attended professors, 00:34:02.97\00:34:06.41 not just the department chairs, 00:34:06.44\00:34:09.84 not just the C suite leaders on the third floor 00:34:09.88\00:34:13.05 of the Ad building. 00:34:13.08\00:34:14.42 We are all called. 00:34:14.45\00:34:17.29 Right? 00:34:20.39\00:34:21.72 You're thinking, oh, this is a trick. 00:34:26.06\00:34:27.40 I'm not gonna say yes. 00:34:27.43\00:34:29.36 There's no trick here. 00:34:29.40\00:34:31.20 We are all called by the Lord Himself. 00:34:31.23\00:34:33.23 The Master of the vineyard who Himself declares, 00:34:33.27\00:34:36.34 you know, He says this in Matthew, 00:34:36.37\00:34:37.71 I think is Matthew 10. 00:34:37.74\00:34:39.07 He says, listen, even if you have 00:34:39.11\00:34:40.44 a student on this campus and the student comes your way 00:34:40.48\00:34:41.81 and you're in a staff position out on the periphery somewhere, 00:34:41.84\00:34:44.75 and that student says, man, I'm just dying of thirst 00:34:44.78\00:34:47.02 and you give him a drink of water. 00:34:47.05\00:34:48.92 Jesus says you are gonna be rewarded one day 00:34:48.95\00:34:52.05 for that act of courtesy and compassion. 00:34:52.09\00:34:55.46 Everybody shares the gold. 00:34:55.49\00:34:58.79 They're not different metals 00:34:58.83\00:35:00.60 for where you serve on this campus. 00:35:00.63\00:35:02.56 Everybody shares the gold. 00:35:02.60\00:35:05.60 Splits the gold because why? 00:35:05.63\00:35:09.30 We are all called. 00:35:09.34\00:35:10.71 Speaking of worldview, Zigarelli 00:35:10.74\00:35:13.17 writes a Christian worldview 00:35:13.21\00:35:15.81 emphasizes that 00:35:15.84\00:35:17.18 God has a particular point of view 00:35:17.21\00:35:18.85 about sociology. 00:35:18.88\00:35:21.02 Yep. 00:35:21.05\00:35:22.38 God has a particular point of view 00:35:22.42\00:35:23.75 about law, 00:35:23.79\00:35:25.12 a particular point of view about accounting and so forth. 00:35:25.15\00:35:27.46 And God invites us to embrace that view. 00:35:27.49\00:35:30.16 He has revealed it through both 00:35:30.19\00:35:31.56 the special revelation of His word. 00:35:31.59\00:35:34.00 So I had a Bible is where it is and this university 00:35:34.03\00:35:36.93 and the general revelation of our study of creation, 00:35:36.97\00:35:39.37 for example, our science discoveries. 00:35:39.40\00:35:42.54 This is all a part of a strategy 00:35:42.57\00:35:44.64 to lead a transformed life to Jesus. 00:35:44.67\00:35:48.34 So in any given class or chapel or student affairs, 00:35:48.38\00:35:51.51 or we'd say student life program 00:35:51.55\00:35:52.95 or athletic contest, 00:35:52.98\00:35:54.38 the leader's integrate, inter... 00:35:54.42\00:35:58.12 Let me try that again. 00:35:58.15\00:36:00.26 I haven't graduated yet. 00:36:00.29\00:36:02.49 The leader's integration, the leader's integration task 00:36:02.52\00:36:05.69 is to bring together these two types of revelation 00:36:05.73\00:36:09.00 in pursuit of one unified truth. 00:36:09.03\00:36:10.80 Come on, to teach a theology of nursing. 00:36:10.83\00:36:13.30 Did you understand there's a, is there a theology of nursing? 00:36:38.46\00:36:41.36 Yeah. 00:36:41.40\00:36:44.10 And then he makes this stunning point 00:36:44.13\00:36:45.57 and it's so stunning. 00:36:45.60\00:36:46.94 I find it controversial. 00:36:46.97\00:36:48.30 When I read it, I said, nah, that's not true. 00:36:48.34\00:36:50.04 That's not true.
