00:23:23.63\00:23:25.43 God shows up in a dream. 00:23:25.47\00:23:27.37 God shows up to young Solomon, Jedidiah. 00:23:27.40\00:23:29.54 And he says, "I have it. 00:23:29.57\00:23:31.41 I have an offer to make. 00:23:31.44\00:23:33.61 Ask me anything you wish. 00:23:33.64\00:23:36.08 And I'll give it to you." 00:23:36.11\00:23:38.15 And in that dream, this young man, 00:23:38.18\00:23:40.98 he pauses for a moment. 00:23:41.02\00:23:42.35 And then he looks up to where God is. 00:23:42.38\00:23:44.59 And he says, "You know what I want? 00:23:44.62\00:23:46.76 I am such a boy. 00:23:46.79\00:23:49.06 I'm not able to discern good and evil, 00:23:49.09\00:23:52.89 unless You give to me. 00:23:52.93\00:23:55.23 Give me wisdom that I might govern Your people 00:23:55.26\00:24:01.10 as You would have me do. 00:24:01.14\00:24:03.17 God steps back and He says, "You know what? 00:24:03.20\00:24:07.41 This is incredible. 00:24:07.44\00:24:09.18 I thought you might ask for wealth. 00:24:09.21\00:24:10.55 I thought you might ask for victory over the enemies. 00:24:10.58\00:24:12.18 I thought you might ask for honor. 00:24:12.21\00:24:13.55 But because you asked for wisdom, guess what? 00:24:13.58\00:24:15.68 I'm going to give you wisdom 00:24:15.72\00:24:17.05 and I'm going to give you everything else 00:24:17.09\00:24:19.19 besides the wealth, the conquering of the enemy. 00:24:19.22\00:24:23.22 You have it all. 00:24:23.26\00:24:24.59 Shoo, He's gone. 00:24:24.63\00:24:26.80 And a few days later, the Land of Israel found out 00:24:26.83\00:24:30.27 that this boy had received the gift of wisdom. 00:24:30.30\00:24:34.50 Two prostitutes come into the throne room. 00:24:34.54\00:24:37.64 The king is just doing the business of the kingdom. 00:24:37.67\00:24:40.24 These two ladies come in. 00:24:40.28\00:24:41.61 The first lady speaks, she said, "Long live the King, 00:24:41.64\00:24:44.48 Your Highness." 00:24:44.51\00:24:47.02 This lady and I live together. 00:24:47.05\00:24:49.45 We had babies about the same time. 00:24:49.48\00:24:50.82 My baby was born three days ahead her hers. 00:24:50.85\00:24:54.29 And the other night while I was sound asleep, 00:24:54.32\00:24:57.89 she tiptoed into my room because inadvertently 00:24:57.93\00:25:00.36 she rolled over on that infant and she suffocated it. 00:25:00.40\00:25:04.07 It was dead. 00:25:04.10\00:25:05.43 She took the dead baby, 00:25:05.47\00:25:06.80 put it under me and took my baby. 00:25:06.84\00:25:09.20 When I woke up in the morning, 00:25:09.24\00:25:10.57 I looked into that face, I do, "This is not my boy." 00:25:10.61\00:25:13.01 The other woman speaks up, "No, no, no, Your Honor, 00:25:13.04\00:25:15.24 it's the other way around." 00:25:15.28\00:25:17.28 I'm the one that owns the living baby. 00:25:17.31\00:25:22.58 And the record reads. 00:25:22.62\00:25:24.02 And so they argued before the King. 00:25:24.05\00:25:28.59 And Solomon stops, he said, "Yo, give me a sword. 00:25:28.62\00:25:33.29 Guard bring it in. 00:25:33.33\00:25:34.96 All right, here's a deal. 00:25:35.00\00:25:37.37 I want you to cut this baby in half right down the middle. 00:25:37.40\00:25:39.73 I want you to give one half to that woman. 00:25:39.77\00:25:41.27 I want you to give one half to that woman. 00:25:41.30\00:25:44.11 And the woman who spoke first, "My Lord, 00:25:44.14\00:25:46.88 O, King, live forever." 00:25:46.91\00:25:48.24 No, no, no, no, no, no, no, you just give the baby to her. 00:25:48.28\00:25:51.48 That's okay. 00:25:51.51\00:25:52.88 Keep the baby alive. 00:25:52.91\00:25:54.75 And the other one said, "No, King, 00:25:54.78\00:25:56.62 that's brilliant solution. 00:25:56.65\00:25:58.19 Just cut it in half, we'll each take a half." 00:25:58.22\00:26:00.42 And Solomon says, "Yo, there's the mother." 00:26:00.46\00:26:04.16 Right? 00:26:04.19\00:26:05.53 Of course, watch this. 00:26:05.56\00:26:07.63 And so it was that, "When all Israel heard the verdict 00:26:07.66\00:26:10.87 the king and given, they hailed the king in awe, 00:26:10.90\00:26:14.47 because they saw that he had wisdom 00:26:14.50\00:26:16.07 from God to administer justice. 00:26:16.10\00:26:18.51 And God gave Solomon, Jedediah, wisdom and very great insight, 00:26:18.54\00:26:22.74 and a breadth of understanding as measureless 00:26:22.78\00:26:24.98 as the sand on the seashore. 00:26:25.01\00:26:26.65 Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom 00:26:26.68\00:26:28.85 of all the people of the East, 00:26:28.88\00:26:30.92 and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. 00:26:30.95\00:26:33.32 From all nations people came to listen to Solomon's wisdom, 00:26:33.36\00:26:37.63 sent by all the kings of the world, 00:26:37.66\00:26:39.73 who had heard of his wisdom." 00:26:39.76\00:26:41.83 I'm telling you what? 00:26:45.17\00:26:47.44 Just a suggestion, if God ever shows up in a dream of yours, 00:26:47.47\00:26:52.37 and He asks you, "What do you want most? 00:26:52.41\00:26:55.41 Just ask Me, I'll give it to you." 00:26:55.44\00:26:57.28 I wanna tell you, I'm telling you, 00:26:57.31\00:26:59.81 ask for the giver of wisdom, 00:26:59.85\00:27:02.85 who happens to be 00:27:02.88\00:27:04.22 the third person of the Godhead, 00:27:04.25\00:27:05.59 the Holy Spirit, one gift, 00:27:05.62\00:27:08.32 and you get every other gift with it. 00:27:08.36\00:27:10.59 I'm telling you the truth. 00:27:10.63\00:27:11.96 Red letter words, 00:27:11.99\00:27:13.33 when Jesus was here, what did He say? 00:27:13.36\00:27:14.70 "If you then, though you are evil, 00:27:14.73\00:27:16.16 know how to give good gifts to your children, 00:27:16.20\00:27:18.43 how much more will your Father in heaven 00:27:18.47\00:27:20.84 give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" 00:27:20.87\00:27:22.90 That's in the continuous tense, 00:27:22.94\00:27:24.67 to those who continually ask Him, 00:27:24.71\00:27:26.11 those who ask him day after day after day. 00:27:26.14\00:27:28.61 You want one gift that brings every other gift with it. 00:27:28.64\00:27:30.75 Come on, every morning ask for the Holy Spirit. 00:27:30.78\00:27:35.08 I do. 00:27:35.12\00:27:37.99 You don't have to be very special. 00:27:38.02\00:27:40.16 Just you and me. 00:27:40.19\00:27:41.52 We can ask, give me that gift today. 00:27:41.56\00:27:45.29 I want that wisdom. 00:27:45.33\00:27:46.66 While even the Queen of Sheba shows up, God bless her. 00:27:50.00\00:27:52.40 She's pagan by the way. 00:27:52.43\00:27:54.40 She has heard. 00:27:54.44\00:27:56.27 She has heard about this king, 00:27:56.30\00:27:57.74 and I want you to see how she heard about it. 00:27:57.77\00:28:01.31 "When the Queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon," 00:28:01.34\00:28:03.85 and notice this, 00:28:03.88\00:28:05.21 "and his relationship to the Lord." 00:28:05.25\00:28:06.98 Wouldn't that be something, if people where you live, 00:28:07.02\00:28:08.85 or people where you work, they notice, 00:28:08.88\00:28:10.52 there's something about this guy. 00:28:10.55\00:28:12.05 There is something about this woman. 00:28:12.09\00:28:13.69 There is something about this 20 something. 00:28:13.72\00:28:17.99 Every time this teen, 00:28:18.03\00:28:19.96 every time he shows up, there... 00:28:20.00\00:28:22.83 It's got to be that, that friendship of his. 00:28:22.86\00:28:28.44 "When the Queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon 00:28:28.47\00:28:30.47 and his relationship to the Lord, 00:28:30.51\00:28:31.97 she came to test Solomon with hard questions." 00:28:32.01\00:28:36.44 Science and philosophy, poetry and art. 00:28:36.48\00:28:41.08 Oh, she says, after the grilling, 00:28:41.12\00:28:43.59 "Oh how happy your people must be! 00:28:43.62\00:28:45.65 How happy your officials who continually stand 00:28:45.69\00:28:47.82 before you and hear your wisdom! 00:28:47.86\00:28:49.72 Praise be to the Lord your God." 00:28:49.76\00:28:51.43 She's a pagan. 00:28:51.46\00:28:52.79 "Praise be to Yahweh of Israel who is delighted in you 00:28:52.83\00:28:55.83 and place you on the throne of Israel. 00:28:55.86\00:28:59.13 Because of the Lord's eternal love for Israel, 00:28:59.17\00:29:02.00 He has made you king to maintain justice 00:29:02.04\00:29:04.91 and righteousness." 00:29:04.94\00:29:06.27 But that's the whole point. 00:29:09.51\00:29:12.05 Whenever God gives a gift, with that gift 00:29:12.08\00:29:16.58 comes the opportunity to tell people 00:29:16.62\00:29:19.65 where you got the gift, 00:29:19.69\00:29:22.06 whatever your gift is. 00:29:22.09\00:29:23.89 Come on. 00:29:23.93\00:29:25.26 Don't keep it a secret. 00:29:25.29\00:29:26.83 Let your relationship with Jesus be what people pick up on 00:29:26.86\00:29:30.50 after they quiz you for a while. 00:29:30.53\00:29:34.17 Nearly half a millennium before Jedediah 00:29:34.20\00:29:37.51 came on the throne. 00:29:37.54\00:29:39.04 The children of Israel are still wandering 00:29:39.07\00:29:40.68 in the wilderness. 00:29:40.71\00:29:42.04 They're coming on the brink of the Promised Land. 00:29:42.08\00:29:44.11 And God comes along and says, "Yo, 00:29:44.15\00:29:46.51 I want to tell you something. 00:29:46.55\00:29:48.32 I hope you never have a king. 00:29:48.35\00:29:50.49 All right, ever. 00:29:50.52\00:29:51.85 You don't need a king. 00:29:51.89\00:29:53.22 I am your king." 00:29:53.25\00:29:54.59 This is what we call a theocracy. 00:29:54.62\00:29:56.06 You follow me and we will conquer the world 00:29:56.09\00:29:59.39 for my kingdom. 00:29:59.43\00:30:02.53 But if you do choose a king, it's amazing to me, 00:30:02.56\00:30:08.37 my friend John Peckham, you know what he calls that? 00:30:08.40\00:30:10.74 He calls that middle knowledge. 00:30:10.77\00:30:13.41 It's not something that's going to happen necessarily. 00:30:13.44\00:30:15.74 It's something that could happen. 00:30:15.78\00:30:17.38 God has all this eventuality. 00:30:17.41\00:30:19.88 If you go this way, this is going to happen. 00:30:19.91\00:30:21.25 If you go this way, 00:30:21.28\00:30:22.62 I can tell you this is going to happen, 00:30:22.65\00:30:23.99 middle knowledge. 00:30:24.02\00:30:25.35 But if you should choose a king, 00:30:25.39\00:30:28.02 let me give you three standards to have a king. 00:30:28.06\00:30:30.09 Here we go. 00:30:30.13\00:30:31.46 This is God speaking, Deuteronomy 17:14, 00:30:31.49\00:30:33.73 "And when you enter the land, the Lord your God is giving you 00:30:33.76\00:30:36.77 and you have taken possession of it and settled in it, 00:30:36.80\00:30:39.17 and you say, 'Let us set a king over us 00:30:39.20\00:30:42.07 like all the nations around us.'" 00:30:42.10\00:30:43.77 What is it about whatever we're in a wider community, 00:30:43.81\00:30:48.14 our tendency, human tendency 00:30:48.18\00:30:50.21 is to try to be like everybody else around. 00:30:50.25\00:30:52.21 We can't be unique. We can't just stand out. 00:30:52.25\00:30:54.38 No, we got to fit in. 00:30:54.42\00:30:56.25 Why is that? 00:30:56.28\00:30:57.62 "And you say, 'Let us set a king over us 00:31:01.66\00:31:04.23 like all the nations around us." 00:31:04.26\00:31:05.73 Okay. 00:31:05.76\00:31:07.50 Then I want you to be sure to appoint over you a king, 00:31:07.53\00:31:10.00 the Lord your God chooses. 00:31:10.03\00:31:11.37 He must be from among your fellow Israelites. 00:31:11.40\00:31:13.20 Don't place a foreigner don't put a pagan 00:31:13.23\00:31:15.04 who rules over you, one who is not an Israelite. 00:31:15.07\00:31:17.94 "The king, moreover, must not acquire 00:31:17.97\00:31:20.81 great numbers of horses for himself 00:31:20.84\00:31:22.98 or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them." 00:31:23.01\00:31:25.41 Why? 00:31:25.45\00:31:26.78 "For the Lord has told you, 00:31:26.82\00:31:28.15 'You are not to go back that way again.'" 00:31:28.18\00:31:30.19 You don't need those horses. 00:31:30.22\00:31:32.09 You know why? 00:31:32.12\00:31:33.46 Because horses are tanks. 00:31:33.49\00:31:36.09 Yeah, there were the tanks of that day. 00:31:36.12\00:31:38.63 And the more tanks you had, the more powerful you are, 00:31:38.66\00:31:41.63 but I'm your king. 00:31:41.66\00:31:43.00 You don't have to worry about power. 00:31:43.03\00:31:44.37 I'll have the power for you. Okay. 00:31:44.40\00:31:45.73 So we don't need many horses. 00:31:45.77\00:31:47.67 God keeps going. 00:31:47.70\00:31:49.04 "You must not take many wives, 00:31:49.07\00:31:52.14 or the king's heart will be led astray. 00:31:52.17\00:31:54.08 He must not accumulate, by the way up, 00:31:54.11\00:31:55.78 standard number three, 00:31:55.81\00:31:57.15 large amounts of silver and gold. 00:31:57.18\00:32:00.92 That's just for the fun of it. 00:32:00.95\00:32:02.28 You and me run those three standards 00:32:02.32\00:32:03.85 by and see how Solomon fares 00:32:03.89\00:32:06.76 with those three divine standards for kingship. 00:32:06.79\00:32:10.83 Okay, let's take the first one. 00:32:10.86\00:32:12.19 The first one is horses, okay? 00:32:12.23\00:32:13.96 How did Solomon do with horses? 00:32:14.00\00:32:15.53 Back to 1 Kings Chapter 10, 00:32:15.56\00:32:17.17 "Solomon accumulated chariots and horses, 00:32:17.20\00:32:19.47 he had fourteen hundred chariots 00:32:19.50\00:32:21.54 and twelve thousand horses, 00:32:21.57\00:32:24.94 which he kept in the chariot cities 00:32:24.97\00:32:26.34 and also with him in Jerusalem." 00:32:26.37\00:32:27.71 We have a family in this parish 00:32:27.74\00:32:29.48 that has 135 horses. 00:32:29.51\00:32:31.41 And when I heard that, and I said, 00:32:31.45\00:32:32.78 "You can't, you got to be kidding me." 00:32:32.81\00:32:34.95 "Twelve thousand, which he kept in the chariot cities 00:32:34.98\00:32:37.85 and also with him in Jerusalem. 00:32:37.89\00:32:39.32 Solomon's horses were imported from..." 00:32:39.35\00:32:40.79 What did God say? 00:32:40.82\00:32:42.16 Don't go back to get your horses. 00:32:42.19\00:32:43.53 What did He say? Don't go to Egypt. 00:32:43.56\00:32:44.89 That's where he got it. 00:32:44.93\00:32:46.26 "Imported from Egypt and from Kue. 00:32:46.29\00:32:47.80 The royal merchants purchased them 00:32:47.83\00:32:49.16 from Kue at the current price." 00:32:49.20\00:32:51.30 But dear Jedediah, God bless him. 00:32:54.94\00:32:58.71 He decided, you know, it's not that big a deal. 00:32:58.74\00:33:00.08 I know God said you're not supposed 00:33:00.11\00:33:01.44 to have a lot of horses. 00:33:01.48\00:33:02.81 But you know what? I got to have horses. 00:33:02.84\00:33:04.18 It's just a little you know, it's a compromise. 00:33:04.21\00:33:09.02 Surely, it's not going to matter in the end. 00:33:09.05\00:33:11.82 There is that dangerous word, compromise. 00:33:11.85\00:33:15.86 You know what's right. 00:33:15.89\00:33:17.63 But you figure it's such a little disobedience, 00:33:17.66\00:33:19.93 it surely won't matter. 00:33:19.96\00:33:21.40 Come on, God, You can't be serious. 00:33:21.43\00:33:24.07 All right, there were three of these standards. 00:33:24.10\00:33:25.43 Standard number one, horses. 00:33:25.47\00:33:26.80 What's the second one? Put it up? 00:33:26.84\00:33:28.34 The second one, gold. 00:33:28.37\00:33:29.97 What did God just say there in Deuteronomy? 00:33:30.01\00:33:31.74 He must not accumulate large amounts of gold and silver. 00:33:31.77\00:33:35.18 Well, let's see how it goes here. 00:33:35.21\00:33:37.05 The weight of the gold... 00:33:37.08\00:33:38.41 This is Solomon's annual revenue. 00:33:38.45\00:33:39.91 All right? 00:33:39.95\00:33:41.28 We got some economists in this room. 00:33:41.32\00:33:43.95 "The weight of the gold that Solomon received 00:33:43.99\00:33:46.12 yearly was 666 talents of gold." 00:33:46.15\00:33:50.63 How much is that? 00:33:50.66\00:33:51.99 "Not including the revenues from the merchants 00:33:52.03\00:33:53.70 and the traders and from all the Arabian kings 00:33:53.73\00:33:56.16 and the governors of the territories." 00:33:56.20\00:33:57.63 All right. 00:33:57.67\00:33:59.00 So how much gold is that? 00:33:59.03\00:34:00.37 David Tasker, my friend, 00:34:00.40\00:34:01.74 he used to be a doctoral student here. 00:34:01.77\00:34:03.34 He's in the South Pacific. 00:34:03.37\00:34:06.57 He writes the commentary and Andrews, 00:34:06.61\00:34:08.71 the Andrews Bible commentary 00:34:08.74\00:34:10.45 has just come out a few months ago, 00:34:10.48\00:34:12.25 and they had just the Old Testament out. 00:34:12.28\00:34:13.88 I got it. 00:34:13.92\00:34:15.25 It's a great commentary. 00:34:15.28\00:34:16.62 New Testament still coming. 00:34:16.65\00:34:17.99 So David Tasker writes, okay, how much? 00:34:18.02\00:34:19.85 How much is that revenue? 00:34:19.89\00:34:22.29 I'm quoting him now. 00:34:22.32\00:34:24.16 Solomon's annual take on gold was about 50,000 pounds 00:34:24.19\00:34:29.40 of gold a year. 00:34:29.43\00:34:32.30 Not to mention silver, ivory and other luxury goods. 00:34:32.33\00:34:36.44 There comes again, that morally debilitating word compromise. 00:34:36.47\00:34:41.84 You know, it can't be. 00:34:41.88\00:34:45.01 How can this be that big a deal? Are you kidding? 00:48:23.40\00:48:25.80 All salvation comes through suffering. 00:48:25.83\00:48:27.84 Jesus' suffering and your suffering and my suffering. 00:48:27.87\00:48:30.74 Some sinners would love to catch the fact, 00:48:30.77\00:48:32.47 the express elevator straight into heaven and say, 00:48:32.51\00:48:34.71 "Yo, I'm here! Look, I said I'm sorry. 00:48:34.74\00:48:37.35 Come on, let's go!" No, no, no, no, no. 00:48:37.38\00:48:41.02 There is no magic wand in heaven 00:48:41.05\00:48:44.65 that can dispel the harvest 00:48:44.69\00:48:46.72 and the consequences of those little foxes of compromise 00:48:46.76\00:48:50.09 that have spoiled and utterly ruined life's vineyard. 00:48:50.13\00:48:55.63 The law is unbreakable. 00:48:55.66\00:48:57.77 It will break you. 00:48:57.80\00:48:59.13 You cannot break it. 00:48:59.17\00:49:00.50 What a man sows, what a woman sows, 00:49:00.54\00:49:03.51 that shall she also reap. 00:49:03.54\00:49:05.61 You can't break it. 00:49:05.64\00:49:07.11 And nobody says, "Give him a break. 00:49:07.14\00:49:08.84 Get out of jail free card." 00:49:08.88\00:49:10.88 Nobody comes out. 00:49:10.91\00:49:12.81 What you sow, you reap. 00:49:12.85\00:49:14.52 Solomon reaped in spades what he sowed. 00:49:14.55\00:49:20.16 But he came to the Savior. 00:49:20.19\00:49:23.56 Oh, yes, nothing can separate us 00:49:23.59\00:49:25.79 from the love of God 00:49:25.83\00:49:27.16 which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:49:27.20\00:49:28.66 But, ladies and gentlemen, 00:49:28.70\00:49:30.77 separating us from the love of God 00:49:30.80\00:49:32.77 and separating us from the sin of our heart 00:49:32.80\00:49:35.14 are two different matters. 00:49:35.17\00:49:37.34 Of course God's love is relentless. 00:49:37.37\00:49:40.04 He will never quit loving you. 00:49:40.08\00:49:41.54 But our sin must be repented. 00:49:41.58\00:49:43.35 Our sin must be relinquished. 00:49:43.38\00:49:44.71 It must be rejected. 00:49:44.75\00:49:46.15 Calvary is evidence enough that the end of sin 00:49:46.18\00:49:49.08 is always painful suffering and crucifixion. 00:49:49.12\00:49:52.95 Now, if you wish, 00:49:52.99\00:49:55.26 and you don't want Jesus to deal 00:49:55.29\00:49:56.62 with your sin, guess what? 00:49:56.66\00:49:57.99 It'll be your death that will pay the penalty. 00:49:58.03\00:49:59.93 It'll be covered. 00:49:59.96\00:50:01.43 You will pay it. 00:50:01.46\00:50:03.87 But if you are not willing to pay the ultimate price 00:50:03.90\00:50:07.90 for a life of compromise and rebellion, 00:50:07.94\00:50:11.24 there is a Savior. 00:50:11.27\00:50:13.51 There is a Savior, and His name is Jesus. 00:50:13.54\00:50:18.88 Oh, He loves you. 00:50:18.91\00:50:20.82 It doesn't matter what you've done. 00:50:20.85\00:50:24.09 I'm not talking to you teenagers up there. 00:50:24.12\00:50:26.42 It does matter what you do. 00:50:26.45\00:50:27.79 Don't you get to thinking, 00:50:27.82\00:50:29.16 "I'll just go and sow my wild oats, 00:50:29.19\00:50:31.03 and I'll sleep with a girl here and sleep with a boy there 00:50:31.06\00:50:33.93 and that it'll all be fine." 00:50:33.96\00:50:35.30 Nope. You will reap what you sow. 00:50:35.33\00:50:37.80 You will reap what you sow. 00:50:37.83\00:50:40.64 But for those who are older, 00:50:40.67\00:50:42.74 embittered, embattled 00:50:42.77\00:50:45.57 and still struggling to hang on, 00:50:45.61\00:50:47.41 I need you to know that Jesus loves you. 00:50:47.44\00:50:50.28 Jesus died for you. 00:50:50.31\00:50:53.21 The backsliding that you have lived, 00:50:53.25\00:50:55.75 your life has been a morality tale. 00:50:55.78\00:50:58.75 The backsliding you have lived, Jesus saw it coming. 00:50:58.79\00:51:03.56 He made full preparation, and He died for that sin. 00:51:03.59\00:51:07.63 He died for those compromises. 00:51:07.66\00:51:10.20 And He's saying, "Boy, come back to Me. 00:51:10.23\00:51:12.10 It's not too late. 00:51:12.13\00:51:13.74 Are you breathing?
