00:17:32.81\00:17:36.28 this last weekend. 00:17:36.32\00:17:38.45 We had American apocalypse that was heavy laden. 00:17:38.49\00:17:40.59 We had the maker of all things loves and wants me. 00:17:40.62\00:17:42.62 That was heavy laden. 00:17:42.66\00:17:43.99 And we had marriage that we just finished up. 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.56 That was heavy laden. 00:17:45.59\00:17:47.76 So for a summer, come on let's do 00:17:47.80\00:17:49.76 something a bit lighter. 00:17:49.80\00:17:51.13 How about animals? 00:17:51.17\00:17:52.50 Don't you just love this graphic? 00:17:52.53\00:17:54.20 I Animal-Ehaw. 00:18:07.65\00:18:10.85 You'll just have to kind of guess ehaw, 00:18:10.89\00:18:13.46 but you will know. 00:18:13.49\00:18:14.82 You don't know yet until we get into it. 00:18:14.86\00:18:19.06 I grew up in a home that loved animals. 00:18:19.09\00:18:20.73 In fact when I was born, my parents had an animal 00:18:20.76\00:18:22.63 in the house, a German shepherd. What a dog? 00:18:25.90\00:18:27.27 The dog's name was Rhetser, a good German name. 00:18:27.30\00:18:30.71 And in fact, I just show you a picture 00:18:30.74\00:18:32.94 because I came along that year 00:18:32.97\00:18:36.18 and that was my first Christmas, 00:18:36.21\00:18:37.95 but there's that German shepherd, Rhetser. 00:18:37.98\00:18:40.48 This is my dad, handsome dad, and that's my beautiful mother. 00:18:40.52\00:18:44.09 And my dad never had the courage 00:18:44.12\00:18:45.69 to tell his brother-in-law Fernan Rhetser 00:18:45.72\00:18:48.42 that he named the dog after him. 00:18:48.46\00:18:52.56 But he needed a German name for a German dog. 00:18:52.59\00:18:55.53 Although both of us, the dog and I were born in Japan. 00:18:55.56\00:18:58.03 So I don't know how that work. 00:18:58.07\00:19:00.24 But when I was about three years old, 00:19:00.27\00:19:03.04 somewhere in there, I was playing in the backyard 00:19:03.07\00:19:05.01 there in Japan and somebody left the gate open. 00:19:05.04\00:19:07.34 So out I went gone. 00:19:07.38\00:19:10.25 My mother is frantic when she finally discovers, 00:19:10.28\00:19:13.42 the boy is not here. 00:19:13.45\00:19:17.29 She says, well, I'll go down and check the lake 00:19:17.32\00:19:18.85 where there was a city park, 00:19:18.89\00:19:20.22 and there was a lake in that park. 00:19:20.26\00:19:21.59 I'll go down and check that lake. 00:19:21.62\00:19:22.96 And when she got there, 00:19:22.99\00:19:24.33 she saw a crowd of Japanese adults and children. 00:19:24.36\00:19:26.93 They're all staring at something 00:19:26.96\00:19:29.33 and she works her way through the crowd. 00:19:29.36\00:19:30.70 And there's this little tiny American boy, 00:19:30.73\00:19:32.67 three years old. 00:19:32.70\00:19:34.04 This is in the mid 50s. 00:19:34.07\00:19:35.40 And so American boy was rather rare on those premises, 00:19:35.44\00:19:39.57 but the crowd was standing back. 00:19:39.61\00:19:40.98 You know why? 00:19:41.01\00:19:42.34 Because Rhetser had seen me leave 00:19:42.38\00:19:44.31 and had trotted along beside me, 00:19:44.35\00:19:46.61 my little guardian angel. 00:19:46.65\00:19:49.78 I grew up loving animals. You know what? 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.69 I believe we all did. 00:19:51.72\00:19:53.29 We took a show of hands right now, 00:19:53.32\00:19:54.66 we'd all raise our hands. 00:19:54.69\00:19:56.02 Oh, me too, Dwight. 00:19:56.06\00:19:57.39 I really love animals because God made us to love animals. 00:19:57.43\00:19:59.69 You know why? Because God is an animal lover. 00:19:59.73\00:20:02.10 Let me run some one-liners by you just to prove to you, 00:20:02.13\00:20:05.17 in case you had a doubt. 00:20:05.20\00:20:07.10 This is the Book of Job 12:8, 10, 00:20:07.14\00:20:10.21 "But ask the animals, Job says, 00:20:10.24\00:20:12.57 and they will teach you or the birds in the sky, 00:20:12.61\00:20:15.04 and they will tell you in the Lord's hand is the life 00:20:15.08\00:20:19.15 of every creature and the breath of all mankind." 00:20:19.18\00:20:21.88 Same God, same Creator. 00:20:21.92\00:20:23.45 We all came from His hand. 00:20:23.49\00:20:25.95 He loves animals. 00:20:25.99\00:20:27.32 The maker of all things loves and wants you and me too. 00:20:27.36\00:20:29.26 He loves all of us. Ah, come on. 00:20:29.29\00:20:31.36 Here's the great Psalm 104, 00:20:31.39\00:20:32.99 "The earth is full of Your creatures, oh God. 00:20:33.03\00:20:35.73 All creatures look to you to give them their food 00:20:35.76\00:20:38.63 at the proper time." 00:20:38.67\00:20:40.87 He's feeding the human race as best again, 00:20:40.90\00:20:45.04 hoping that will help, 00:20:45.07\00:20:47.04 but He's feeding the animal kingdom as well. 00:20:47.08\00:20:49.81 We got to feed her. 00:20:49.84\00:20:51.98 Right off our deck and the raccoon just loves it. 00:20:52.01\00:20:55.75 We put the feeder out. 00:20:55.78\00:20:57.12 The raccoon was there last night. 00:20:57.15\00:20:58.49 I checked this morning. He loves this feeder. 00:20:58.52\00:21:00.39 He thinks it's for him. 00:21:00.42\00:21:01.92 It's a Baltimore oriole feeder 00:21:01.96\00:21:04.36 where you put a jar of Welch's grape juice 00:21:04.39\00:21:09.03 and you turn it upside down. 00:21:09.06\00:21:10.40 And it just, as they eat, it just keeps going. 00:21:10.43\00:21:12.27 And the raccoon has figured it out, 00:21:12.30\00:21:14.00 old rocky raccoon. 00:21:14.04\00:21:15.37 And when he flips the feeder over, 00:21:15.40\00:21:17.01 we know he's come in. 00:21:17.04\00:21:18.37 It was flipped over this morning. 00:21:18.41\00:21:19.74 Look at it. So here is his response in verse 18, 00:30:25.35\00:30:28.12 "But Balaam answered them," the second delegation, 00:30:28.16\00:30:30.66 "even if Balak gave me all the silver 00:30:30.69\00:30:33.26 and gold in his palace, 00:30:33.29\00:30:35.23 I could not do anything great or small 00:30:35.26\00:30:37.07 to go beyond the command of the Lord, my God." 00:30:37.10\00:30:39.83 And he finally calls God 00:30:39.87\00:30:41.54 the names of the Israelites have given him. 00:30:41.57\00:30:43.81 Yahweh, that's my God. 00:30:43.84\00:30:47.54 If he had just stopped there, we'd have been fine. 00:30:47.58\00:30:52.68 Israel had been okay, but oh no, 00:30:52.71\00:30:56.79 he's got a cash register with dollar signs in his eyes. 00:30:56.82\00:31:01.62 And he goes on. He should have stopped. 00:31:01.66\00:31:03.22 He goes on and says, "Listen, why don't you spend 00:31:03.26\00:31:04.73 the night here so that I can find out 00:31:04.76\00:31:06.09 what else the Lord might tell me?" 00:31:06.13\00:31:07.66 You know what? 00:31:07.70\00:31:09.03 Balaam is just like you and me, we know it's wrong. 00:31:09.06\00:31:11.53 Our conscience tells us it's wrong. 00:31:11.57\00:31:13.00 God has told us it's wrong. 00:31:13.03\00:31:14.37 We keep going back to God and say, you know what? 00:31:36.32\00:31:37.66 Because there's no sense in saying no. 00:31:37.69\00:31:39.03 God has been saying, 00:31:39.06\00:31:40.40 God has said to Balaam which side... 00:31:40.43\00:31:41.76 Which part of the no do you not understand, 00:31:41.80\00:31:44.43 the N or the O? 00:31:44.47\00:31:47.47 I don't understand, Balaam says. 00:31:47.50\00:31:48.84 I mean, do you want me to do this? 00:31:48.87\00:31:50.37 It's really not clear to me. 00:31:50.41\00:31:51.74 Give me a break, God says. 00:31:51.77\00:31:53.11 Okay, you go, but you say only what I say, 00:31:53.14\00:31:55.61 what I tell you. 00:31:55.64\00:31:56.98 So that's exactly what happens. 00:31:57.01\00:31:58.35 But Balaam got up in the morning 00:31:58.38\00:31:59.71 and saddled his donkey. 00:31:59.75\00:32:01.08 There it is, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding 00:32:01.12\00:32:02.78 today's animal, boys and girls. 00:32:02.82\00:32:04.75 We just saw it. 00:32:04.79\00:32:06.12 He saddles up his donkey 00:32:06.15\00:32:08.32 and he went with them all by the officials. 00:32:08.36\00:32:11.06 But God was very angry when he went. 00:32:11.09\00:32:14.03 You know, the maker of all things 00:32:14.06\00:32:15.40 loves and wants us. 00:32:15.43\00:32:16.77 I get it. 00:32:16.80\00:32:18.13 But don't you forget that the maker of all things 00:32:18.17\00:32:19.50 can get pretty angry 00:32:19.53\00:32:21.54 when His creation is at stake 00:32:21.57\00:32:23.41 or His friends are threatened, He gets angry. 00:32:23.44\00:32:26.81 And so God was very angry 00:32:29.91\00:32:31.25 when He went and the angel of the Lord, by the way, 00:32:31.28\00:32:33.68 code language in Hebrew, oftentimes for the second 00:32:33.72\00:32:37.12 person of the triune God, 00:32:37.15\00:32:39.62 this would be the pre-incarnate Christ. 00:32:39.65\00:32:41.39 He often shows up as the angel of the Lord. 00:32:41.42\00:32:44.39 "But the angel of the Lord stood in the road 00:32:44.43\00:32:48.10 to oppose him." 00:32:48.13\00:32:49.46 Balaam was riding on his donkey 00:32:49.50\00:32:51.60 with his two servants who were with him and went. 00:32:51.63\00:32:54.00 Now, go get this and went. 00:32:54.04\00:32:55.40 Verse 23, "The donkey saw the angel 00:32:55.44\00:32:57.74 of the Lord standing in the road 00:32:57.77\00:32:59.64 with a drawn sword in his hand." 00:32:59.67\00:33:01.81 And he's pouring in the sword. 00:33:04.81\00:33:07.28 And you know what that drawn sword is saying? 00:33:07.32\00:33:09.45 One more step. 00:33:09.48\00:33:14.49 And the donkey who in this story 00:33:14.52\00:33:17.09 turns out brighter than Balaam. 00:33:17.13\00:33:20.23 The donkey knows what that means. 00:33:20.26\00:33:25.43 Balaam is so ticked off. 00:33:25.47\00:33:27.04 He takes the end of that, those rings. 00:33:27.07\00:33:29.24 When that donkey gets him out in the middle of the field, 00:33:29.27\00:33:30.87 he's just a bad set, whipping. 00:33:30.91\00:33:34.08 You stupid, dumb creature. 00:33:34.11\00:33:37.38 Oh Balaam he knows who the dumb one here? Are you kidding, Dwight? 00:39:48.55\00:39:50.95 Jesus, can you imagine that? 00:39:50.99\00:39:52.99 Not only was Jesus, by the way, 00:39:53.02\00:39:54.76 the pre-incarnate creator of donkeys, 00:39:54.79\00:39:57.36 His very first bassinet or cradle was a wooden box 00:39:57.39\00:40:00.33 of donkey feed, we call a manger. 00:40:00.36\00:40:04.90 He is close to donkeys. 00:40:04.93\00:40:07.64 His first bedroom 00:40:07.67\00:40:09.57 is a smelly barnyard, animal's stable. 00:40:09.60\00:40:13.94 He loves animals. 00:40:17.01\00:40:18.85 His story began surrounded by animals. 00:40:18.88\00:40:22.35 Don't ask me, does Jesus love animals? 00:40:22.38\00:40:25.65 They're sprinkled in the stories about him. 00:40:25.69\00:40:27.99 They're embedded in the stories from Him, 00:40:28.02\00:40:30.79 His parables, animals, animals, animals. 00:40:30.83\00:40:33.63 Jesus was a lover of animals. 00:40:33.66\00:40:37.43 That's the truth 00:40:37.47\00:40:39.87 is that love or the lack there of for animals 00:40:39.90\00:40:44.41 says something very major about human character. 00:40:44.44\00:40:50.05 Very major 00:40:50.08\00:40:51.41 to the place in the organization. 00:40:54.98\00:40:56.32 You ever heard of PETA, the organization P-E-T-A? 00:40:56.35\00:40:58.85 Yeah, you have. 00:40:58.89\00:41:00.22 People for the ethical treatment of animals. 00:41:00.26\00:41:01.59 They have gained a global reputation 00:41:01.62\00:41:03.16 for animal care and animal rights. 00:41:03.19\00:41:05.13 Oh, listen to this. I went to their home page. 00:41:05.16\00:41:07.13 Although I discovered by the way, 00:41:07.16\00:41:08.53 finding their home page, that there's a big controversy 00:41:08.56\00:41:10.57 out there about PETA strategies 00:41:10.60\00:41:12.13 because PETA's strategy is simple. 00:41:12.17\00:41:13.80 Just euthanize every animal you can get a hold 00:41:13.84\00:41:15.70 of and deliver that animal from its suppression, 00:41:15.74\00:41:18.87 which is kind of a crazy, in some terms strategy. 00:41:18.91\00:41:24.38 But in the name of animal rights, 00:41:24.41\00:41:25.91 look what PETA advocates. 00:41:25.95\00:41:27.95 Let me put this on the screen. This is from their home page. 00:41:27.98\00:41:30.55 So speaking of animals, the question is not, 00:41:30.59\00:41:34.32 can they, can animals reason nor can they talk, 00:41:34.36\00:41:38.43 but the question is, can they suffer? 00:41:38.46\00:41:40.73 And that's what PETA is telling us. 00:41:40.76\00:41:42.86 And in that passage, Jeremy Bentham, 00:41:42.90\00:41:45.03 who deals with moral philosophy. 00:41:45.07\00:41:46.70 Okay? 00:41:46.74\00:41:48.07 So Jeremy Bentham points to the capacity for suffering 00:41:48.10\00:41:51.04 as the vital characteristic that gives a being the right 00:41:51.07\00:41:54.38 to equal consideration. 00:41:54.41\00:41:56.68 I want to challenge that thinking. 00:41:56.71\00:41:58.25 As PETA founder, Ingrid Newkirk has said, 00:41:58.28\00:42:01.42 I'm quoting her now. 00:42:01.45\00:42:02.78 "When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, 00:42:02.82\00:42:06.99 a rat is a pig, 00:42:07.02\00:42:09.16 is a dog, is a boy. 00:42:09.19\00:42:13.36 Each one values his or her life and fights the knife." 00:42:13.40\00:42:19.00 I beg to differ with you 00:42:19.03\00:42:20.80 Sister Newkirk, 00:42:20.84\00:42:25.11 because I disagree with your statement 00:42:25.14\00:42:27.31 that conflates animal creatures 00:42:27.34\00:42:29.08 into some sort of moral equivalence 00:42:29.11\00:42:30.98 in value with human beings. 00:42:31.01\00:42:32.71 I can understand somebody embracing Darwinism 00:42:32.75\00:42:34.98 to embrace what you've just suggested. 00:42:35.02\00:42:37.75 But as a Christian, I thoroughly believe 00:42:37.79\00:42:39.45 that of all the creatures that the Creator created, 00:42:39.49\00:42:42.12 there's only one creature 00:42:42.16\00:42:43.73 given the divine as the theologians 00:42:43.76\00:42:46.53 call it the Imago Dei, the image of God. 00:42:46.56\00:42:51.03 There's only one creature. 00:42:51.07\00:42:52.40 There's no misunderstanding in God's mind. 00:42:52.43\00:42:54.14 Let's see, is the pig the same, is the... 00:42:54.17\00:42:56.71 No, there's no misunderstanding. 00:42:56.74\00:42:58.27 I reject this business of a rat as a pig, 00:42:58.31\00:43:03.14 as a dog, as a boy, that sort of symbiosis 00:43:03.18\00:43:06.05 and conflation, they are not the same, 00:43:06.08\00:43:08.98 which however, let us be quick to remind ourselves 00:43:09.02\00:43:12.65 that does not diminish our human responsibility 00:43:12.69\00:43:14.89 to provide creation care for creation creatures. 00:43:14.92\00:43:19.93 I like the way the SPCA puts it. 00:43:19.96\00:43:21.56 You've heard of the SPCA, haven't you? 00:43:21.60\00:43:23.16 Society for the prevention of cruelty to what? 00:43:23.20\00:43:26.67 Animals. 00:43:26.70\00:43:28.04 The local chapter here in Southwest, Michigan 00:43:28.07\00:43:30.94 on their front page, home page, the... 00:43:30.97\00:43:33.98 I'm quoting now, "The SPCA of Southwest Michigan 00:43:34.01\00:43:36.81 is a no kill shelter," we don't kill our animals, 00:43:36.85\00:43:40.15 "dedicated to working for the well-being," 00:43:40.18\00:43:41.98 and I say bravo to them, 00:43:42.02\00:43:43.42 "dedicated to working for the well-being of animals 00:43:43.45\00:43:45.55 and creating an adoption focus community 00:43:45.59\00:43:48.32 in Southwest Michigan. 00:43:48.36\00:43:50.33 Our goal is to end senseless animal euthanasia 00:43:50.36\00:43:53.93 and Southwest Michigan, 00:43:53.96\00:43:55.63 and provide all animals with a loving, caring home. 00:43:55.66\00:43:59.47 Now I think that's a rather creative solution. 00:43:59.50\00:44:02.60 Don't euthanize them, just find homes for them. 00:44:02.64\00:44:06.57 It's still a challenge. I'm sure, 00:44:06.61\00:44:10.21 but we need to stand you and I against cruelty 00:44:10.25\00:44:12.21 toward animals, the kind of cruelty that Balaam 00:44:12.25\00:44:14.85 has demonstrated very vividly before our eyes this morning, 00:44:14.88\00:44:18.19 or listen up now, 00:44:18.22\00:44:19.55 the kind of mass produced slaughter house animal cruelty 00:44:19.59\00:44:22.59 that keeps America's fast food counters 00:44:22.62\00:44:24.96 and home table supplied with animal flesh 00:44:24.99\00:44:28.10 and animal products. 00:44:28.13\00:44:30.03 Now nobody is listening. 00:44:30.07\00:44:32.17 I believe social justice for animals, Dwight, 00:44:32.20\00:44:33.94 but don't talk to me about diet. 00:44:33.97\00:44:36.77 No, I'm not talking to you about diet. 00:44:36.81\00:44:39.47 We must stand against such cruelty. 00:44:39.51\00:44:41.28 I get it. 00:44:41.31\00:44:42.64 You want social justice? 00:44:42.68\00:44:44.18 Defend the way these animals are being slaughtered 00:44:44.21\00:44:47.58 by the thousands for America's appetite, 00:44:47.62\00:44:50.82 by the thousands. 00:44:50.85\00:44:52.75 Look at the methods of slaughter. 00:44:52.79\00:44:55.49 Just look. 00:44:55.52\00:44:57.99 I like the way John Peckham in his brand-new book, 00:44:58.03\00:45:00.73 Divine Attributes describes what we're faced with. 00:45:00.76\00:45:06.30 It's a wonderful book by the way. 00:45:06.33\00:45:08.34 And I'm two-thirds of the way through the book. 00:45:08.37\00:45:12.24 He describes God's sovereign care 00:45:12.27\00:45:14.18 for His creation and His creatures. 00:45:14.21\00:45:16.08 And in that chapter, He makes this statement. 00:45:16.11\00:45:19.78 I want you to get it. 00:45:19.81\00:45:21.15 "God calls humans to be stewards, 00:45:21.18\00:45:23.95 even in some sense corulers 00:45:23.99\00:45:27.06 of this planet as Genesis 1:28, makes very clear. 00:45:27.09\00:45:30.19 Humans are to be caretakers rather than dominators, 00:45:30.23\00:45:33.86 valuing fellow creatures as God's creation 00:45:33.90\00:45:36.46 and taking care of creation as best we can. 00:45:36.50\00:45:39.20 We might pay closer attention to our diet, 00:45:39.23\00:45:42.60 fostering ethical eating, and moving toward diets 00:45:42.64\00:45:45.51 that are more earth friendly. 00:45:45.54\00:45:47.68 And as he writes, my colleague Rahel Wells puts it. 00:45:47.71\00:45:51.41 She teaches in the undergrad religion department, 00:45:51.45\00:45:53.28 cruelty free. 00:45:53.31\00:45:55.35 Oh, I like that. A cruelty free diet. 00:45:55.38\00:45:58.62 As Scripture repeatedly emphasizes 00:45:58.65\00:46:00.82 God cares for animals, 00:46:00.86\00:46:03.46 and a righteous man has regard for the life of his animal. 00:46:03.49\00:46:07.56 Proverbs 12:10.' We just looked at that moment ago. 00:46:07.60\00:46:09.56 To return to the point, 00:46:13.23\00:46:14.80 Jesus was obviously an animal lover. 00:46:14.84\00:46:19.11 He not only talked the talk, 00:46:19.14\00:46:22.11 but He walked the walk 00:46:22.14\00:46:24.75 and displayed kindness to people and animals. 00:46:24.78\00:46:29.45 Oh, I've got to share this with you. 00:46:29.48\00:46:30.82 This is such a beautiful depiction of Jesus here. 00:46:30.85\00:46:33.22 This is Desire of Ages again. 00:46:33.25\00:46:34.59 "Jesus was the fountain of healing mercy for the world, 00:46:34.62\00:46:37.96 and through all those secluded years at Nazareth." 00:46:37.99\00:46:40.53 I mean, we know He went to the temple when He was 12, 00:46:40.56\00:46:42.36 but what happened before 12 and what happened after 12? 00:46:42.40\00:46:45.40 Through all those secluded years at Nazareth, 00:46:45.43\00:46:48.20 His life flowed out in currents of sympathy and tenderness. 00:46:48.24\00:46:52.61 The aged, these are the people He loved on, the aged, 00:46:52.64\00:46:55.38 He was kind to the aged, 00:46:55.41\00:46:57.05 the sorrowing and the sin burdened, 00:46:57.08\00:47:00.05 the children at play in their innocent joy, 00:47:00.08\00:47:02.75 the little creatures of the groves, 00:47:02.78\00:47:04.65 the patient beasts of burden, 00:47:04.69\00:47:06.76 all were happier for Jesus' presence. 00:47:06.79\00:47:09.52 Could that be said about you when you leave a room 00:47:09.56\00:47:12.03 or you leave a neighborhood all were happier 00:47:12.06\00:47:14.70 because you were there. 00:47:14.73\00:47:16.06 Wow. Wow, indeed. 00:47:16.10\00:47:19.67 "He whose word of power upheld the worlds 00:47:19.70\00:47:22.94 would stoop to relieve a wounded bird." 00:47:22.97\00:47:25.71 He didn't have the power. 00:47:25.74\00:47:27.08 Your birdie broken wing, be healed. 00:47:27.11\00:47:29.88 He didn't do that. He couldn't do it. 00:47:29.91\00:47:32.01 Didn't want to do it, 00:47:32.05\00:47:33.55 but He stooped to relieve a wounded bird. 00:47:33.58\00:47:36.15 I'll take you home birdie. I see that wing. 00:47:36.18\00:47:38.19 Ooh, I think we can set it and get a little wood 00:47:38.22\00:47:40.02 from my carpenter shop. 00:47:40.06\00:47:41.39 I think we can set it out for you till you're strong 00:47:41.42\00:47:43.46 and then we'll let you go. 00:47:43.49\00:47:44.83 "There was nothing beneath Jesus, notice, 00:47:44.86\00:47:46.90 nothing to which He disdained to minister." 00:47:46.93\00:47:50.87 Amazing. 00:47:50.90\00:47:52.23 He was kind, He was kind to animals. 00:47:52.27\00:47:54.37 He was kind to humans. 00:47:54.40\00:47:56.14 Jesus was a kind man. And guess what? 00:47:56.17\00:47:58.11 We must be kind men and women 00:47:58.14\00:48:00.78 and teens and children and young adults. 00:48:00.81\00:48:03.51 We must be a kind people. 00:48:03.55\00:48:08.02 Didn't get one amen for that? Amen. 00:48:08.05\00:48:10.75 You love the Balaam part 00:48:10.79\00:48:12.12 but now you're just sitting there. 00:48:12.15\00:48:14.49 We must be kind people. 00:48:14.52\00:48:16.16 1 Corinthians 13:4, 00:48:16.19\00:48:18.16 Love is kind. 00:48:18.19\00:48:21.36 We gotta be kind people. 00:48:21.40\00:48:22.73 When we walk out of a room, 00:48:22.76\00:48:24.10 they're saying those are kind people. 00:48:24.13\00:48:27.24 Those are my kind of people. Yeah. 00:48:27.27\00:48:31.61 Abraham Joshua Heschel, the great rabbi and scholar. 00:48:31.64\00:48:36.41 "When I was young, I admired clever people. 00:48:36.44\00:48:39.65 Now that I am old, I admire kind people." 00:48:39.68\00:48:44.92 Are we kind? 00:48:44.95\00:48:47.12 Are we known, are you known as a kind person? 00:48:47.16\00:48:52.03 I'm gonna confess something to you. 00:48:52.06\00:48:55.50 When I was younger in ministry, 00:48:55.53\00:48:58.83 I used to think of leaders, 00:48:58.87\00:49:00.50 good leaders as take charge, kind of people, 00:49:00.54\00:49:04.07 you know, they know where they're going. 00:49:04.11\00:49:05.44 They know how they're gonna get there. 00:49:05.47\00:49:07.28 And oh, boy, they would just demonstrate 00:49:07.31\00:49:09.94 that kind of aggressive forward thinking. 00:49:09.98\00:49:12.68 They were not unkind. 00:49:12.71\00:49:14.05 Don't misunderstand me, 00:49:14.08\00:49:15.42 but they were not so focused on kindness. 00:49:15.45\00:49:18.55 In fact, I came to the place 00:49:18.59\00:49:20.56 where I saw kindness as a trait, 00:49:20.59\00:49:22.56 almost on the edge of weakness. 00:49:22.59\00:49:27.53 You know, I mean please. 00:49:27.56\00:49:32.73 Kinder people are a bit weaker, you know, I saw it. 00:49:32.77\00:49:36.00 Less aggressive, less destined for great things. 00:49:36.04\00:49:40.11 I had a father whom I love dearly. 00:49:40.14\00:49:42.88 And do to this day though he sleeps in Jesus. 00:49:42.91\00:49:46.01 He was very kind. 00:49:46.05\00:49:49.02 He was fun to be around. He was a hoot sometimes, 00:49:49.05\00:49:51.39 but he was a kind person and he was a leader. 00:49:51.42\00:49:54.62 But I confess this to my shame. 00:49:54.66\00:49:57.16 I wondered sometimes if he wasn't too kind, 00:49:57.19\00:50:00.60 he didn't make the right moves. 00:50:00.63\00:50:02.63 He didn't set himself up for something. 00:50:02.66\00:50:04.47 He was always looking out for the other people. 00:50:04.50\00:50:07.04 Why would you do this? 00:50:07.07\00:50:10.34 But as the years have gone by, 00:50:10.37\00:50:13.58 and I suppose life has a way of mellowing us. 00:50:13.61\00:50:18.41 I've come to realize how wrong I have been. 00:50:18.45\00:50:22.72 I have discovered kindness is not a weakness. 00:50:22.75\00:50:26.52 It is a towering strength, 00:50:26.55\00:50:31.83 strength. 00:50:31.86\00:50:33.19 My father possessed that strength. 00:50:38.03\00:50:40.14 And I've seen others who do as well. 00:50:40.17\00:50:42.04 Listen to me carefully. 00:50:42.07\00:50:44.04 If you have to abandon kindness to get to where you're going, 00:50:44.07\00:50:47.48 okay, I'm talking to you now. 00:50:47.51\00:50:49.38 If you have to abandon kindness to get to where you're going, 00:50:49.41\00:50:52.61 then where you are going isn't worth going to. 00:50:52.65\00:50:56.12 Do you understand me? 00:50:56.15\00:50:58.15 I repeat that. You didn't get it. 00:50:58.19\00:50:59.79 If you have to abandon kindness 00:50:59.82\00:51:01.79 to get to where you are going, then where you are going 00:51:01.82\00:51:04.43 isn't worth going too. 00:51:04.46\00:51:06.06 We're in a political season in this nation 00:51:09.60\00:51:12.57 where the press and the public 00:51:12.60\00:51:15.04 reward men and women who are unkind to others, 00:51:15.07\00:51:18.27 who publicly belittle and make fun of their opponents, 00:51:18.31\00:51:21.78 whose trash talk is somehow a virtue to aspire to. 00:51:21.81\00:51:26.58 That's the America we live in now. 00:51:26.61\00:51:30.59 To the place those who advocate 00:51:30.62\00:51:33.02 kindness or demonstrate it 00:51:33.05\00:51:34.56 or attempt to live it are mocked. 00:51:34.59\00:51:36.59 They're belittled, sadly rejected by a public 00:51:36.62\00:51:39.59 that has become as unchrist like as its political leaders 00:51:39.63\00:51:43.50 or maybe it's the other way around. 00:51:43.53\00:51:45.23 The leaders have become like the people. 00:51:45.27\00:51:47.97 Now look at, I am not suggesting 00:51:48.00\00:51:50.97 all political leaders must be Christian, 00:51:51.01\00:51:54.84 but I'll tell you this. 00:51:54.88\00:51:56.85 I am saying, as clearly as I know how, 00:51:56.88\00:51:59.78 that all leaders of moral worth 00:51:59.81\00:52:03.28 will be kind people 00:52:03.32\00:52:05.52 because kindness is a virtue, 00:52:08.69\00:52:11.59 a noble virtue, a strength. 00:52:11.63\00:52:13.29 And you know what? 00:52:13.33\00:52:15.63 I will not follow a leader 00:52:15.66\00:52:19.70 who is not kind. 00:52:19.73\00:52:22.24 I will not catch my wagon 00:52:22.27\00:52:27.94 to his destiny or her destiny. 00:52:27.98\00:52:30.05 Why? 00:52:34.85\00:52:37.59 I'm not saying all politicians ought to become Christians. 00:52:37.62\00:52:41.42 I'm saying everybody needs to be kind just like Jesus. 00:52:41.46\00:52:47.33 And I wanna be like Jesus. 00:52:47.36\00:52:49.96 You say, "Dwight, how can I be like Jesus?" 00:52:50.00\00:52:52.07 I'll tell you how. 00:52:52.10\00:52:54.17 You just follow this universal law. 00:52:54.20\00:52:57.31 What we behold, we become. 00:52:57.34\00:53:00.78 Never forget that. You can't break that law. 00:53:00.81\00:53:05.41 It can break you.
