00:08:48.16\00:08:52.53 All the disciples, 00:08:52.56\00:08:54.56 every single one of them, please. 00:08:54.60\00:08:58.47 Leaving Jesus alone 00:09:01.50\00:09:02.84 to be roped and dragged 00:09:02.87\00:09:06.27 by evil men. 00:09:06.31\00:09:09.78 And, of course, there is the obligatory examination 00:09:09.81\00:09:12.85 by the titular high priest Anise. 00:09:12.88\00:09:19.15 He's an old man. 00:09:19.19\00:09:21.69 Nothing comes from that 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.63 barium to Annas' son-in-law 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.96 who is the acting high priest Caiaphas. 00:09:27.00\00:09:30.67 He has a palace. 00:09:30.70\00:09:33.77 Jesus is bound. 00:09:33.80\00:09:35.60 The gag is loosed from his mouth. 00:09:35.64\00:09:38.97 I tell you what? 00:09:39.01\00:09:40.38 It's a kangaroo court from the beginning. 00:09:40.41\00:09:43.55 No witnesses can agree, not even two of them. 00:09:43.58\00:09:47.18 And the prisoner refuses to answer a single question. 00:09:47.22\00:09:53.25 And finally, the vile Caiaphas is desperate 00:09:53.29\00:09:56.56 for some action tonight, 00:09:56.59\00:10:00.90 feigns shock 00:10:00.93\00:10:06.90 as he grills the prisoner. 00:10:06.94\00:10:09.77 Are you an under oath? 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.14 Are you the Messiah, 00:10:12.17\00:10:15.41 the Son of God 00:10:15.44\00:10:18.08 and shoved into that corner. 00:10:18.11\00:10:20.65 The prisoner has to speak. 00:10:20.68\00:10:22.92 You say so, 00:10:22.95\00:10:25.39 but I tell you the day is coming 00:10:25.42\00:10:28.19 when you will see the Son of man 00:10:28.22\00:10:31.09 riding upon the clouds of heaven, 00:10:31.13\00:10:33.19 sitting beside glory, 00:10:33.23\00:10:36.67 and then comes that dramatic 00:10:36.70\00:10:40.00 well-rehearsed act 00:10:40.04\00:10:42.17 as he shrieks and rips his sacerdotal garments. 00:10:42.20\00:10:47.58 What say you jury 00:10:47.61\00:10:48.94 and they vote unanimously, get this. 00:10:48.98\00:10:51.28 They vote unanimously this verdict. 00:10:51.31\00:10:53.72 He deserves death. 00:10:53.75\00:10:58.12 It's the greatest lie 00:10:58.15\00:10:59.49 in the history of the human race. 00:10:59.52\00:11:00.99 He deserves death. 00:11:01.02\00:11:04.16 And then for a second time, 00:11:04.19\00:11:06.70 all hell breaks loose 00:11:06.73\00:11:08.66 as the gathered rabble 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.07 now are permitted access to the prisoner 00:11:10.10\00:11:12.93 and with fang and fury and spittle 00:11:12.97\00:11:18.07 and shrieks of curse, 00:11:18.11\00:11:21.01 they descend and pummel the prisoner. 00:11:21.04\00:11:26.95 I say at the beginning, I say it again. 00:11:26.98\00:11:28.85 I marvel 00:11:28.88\00:11:31.59 that Jesus survives 00:11:31.62\00:11:35.29 until His death. 00:11:35.32\00:11:38.43 And the Roman procurator 00:11:38.46\00:11:41.16 is ticked to high heavens 00:11:41.20\00:11:43.97 for the rude early morning awakening, 00:11:44.00\00:11:48.10 interrogation by the governor 00:11:48.14\00:11:50.17 seems so innocent and inquiring. 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.64 But when the mob for hire 00:11:52.67\00:11:54.01 begins to chant for the prisoners' crucifixion, 00:11:54.04\00:11:57.41 every political instinct 00:11:57.45\00:11:59.61 of the governor's mastery 00:11:59.65\00:12:01.15 of survival kick in. 00:12:01.18\00:12:06.89 Yes, he will confess three times. 00:12:06.92\00:12:08.52 I find no fault in him, three confessions. 00:12:08.56\00:12:13.09 They aren't confessions at all. 00:12:13.13\00:12:14.93 They're covering his tale. 00:12:14.96\00:12:16.50 I don't understand 00:12:23.84\00:12:26.34 how Jesus could have survived one scourging, 00:12:26.37\00:12:29.34 let alone two, 00:12:29.38\00:12:30.71 but scholars believe 00:12:30.75\00:12:32.08 He may have suffered scourging twice 00:12:32.11\00:12:36.05 in those few hours. 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.32 Strip naked, 00:12:39.35\00:12:41.49 the executioner with other wooden handle 00:12:41.52\00:12:44.76 and leather straps are fixed to it, 00:12:44.79\00:12:47.93 tied into each leather strap bone and metal and rock 00:12:47.96\00:12:54.57 literally shredding the victim 00:12:54.60\00:12:57.17 as he yanks back and the skin tears open. 00:12:57.21\00:13:03.24 I marvel 00:13:03.28\00:13:06.65 that Jesus survived 00:13:06.68\00:13:09.88 until His death. 00:13:09.92\00:13:12.32 Why would a God do that for whom? 00:13:12.35\00:13:18.89 You're kidding me. 00:13:18.93\00:13:20.26 And Pilate at last brings out the purple robed prisoner 00:13:23.73\00:13:30.57 for the last time. 00:13:30.61\00:13:34.51 Now we see the morality tale that Pilate has become. 00:13:34.54\00:13:39.61 We see that behind his facade 00:13:39.65\00:13:43.49 of authority and power 00:13:43.52\00:13:46.92 is a craving heart. 00:13:46.96\00:13:51.56 He's already hanging by a thread 00:13:51.59\00:13:53.80 with the imperial throne in Rome. 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.53 He knows that 00:13:56.56\00:13:58.37 if he doesn't play the last card right, 00:13:58.40\00:14:01.70 he loses his position and power and possibly his life. 00:14:01.74\00:14:06.21 And nobody that morning will exchange places 00:14:06.24\00:14:11.41 with this innocent prisoner. 00:14:11.45\00:14:14.08 That's why it makes me so mad 00:14:14.12\00:14:16.48 every single time I come to this line. 00:14:16.52\00:14:19.02 I want you to open your Bible 00:14:19.05\00:14:21.06 to John Chapter 19. 00:14:21.09\00:14:23.99 Find it nothing going on the screen. 00:14:24.03\00:14:26.63 Find it in your device, your Bible, 00:14:26.66\00:14:31.33 the crucifixion of Christ. 00:14:31.37\00:14:33.23 The fourth gospel's version, 00:14:33.27\00:14:35.80 John 19 drop down to verse 12. 00:14:35.84\00:14:40.28 "From then on, 00:14:40.31\00:14:42.74 Pilate tried to set Jesus free, 00:14:42.78\00:14:45.71 but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, 00:14:45.75\00:14:47.68 'If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. 00:14:47.72\00:14:52.85 Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." 00:14:52.89\00:14:58.39 And every time I come to that, 00:14:58.43\00:15:00.66 I say in my soul, 00:15:00.70\00:15:02.26 Pilate, come on, my man, you can stand up this time. 00:15:02.30\00:15:07.37 Don't buckle now. 00:15:07.40\00:15:09.67 Three times Pilate has declared, 00:15:13.91\00:15:17.75 'I find no fault in Him." 00:15:17.78\00:15:20.72 Three times, listen to this, 00:15:20.75\00:15:22.08 three times Roman jurisprudence, 00:15:22.12\00:15:26.32 along with a Jewish court 00:15:26.35\00:15:31.36 attempt knowingly 00:15:31.39\00:15:34.46 to send an innocent man to his death. 00:15:34.50\00:15:40.00 Still happens today, by the way. 00:15:40.04\00:15:44.31 The innocent 00:15:44.34\00:15:47.31 railroaded through trial 00:15:47.34\00:15:50.81 because every court needs a victim. 00:15:50.85\00:15:56.15 Will Pilate yield 00:15:56.18\00:15:58.45 to the brute political instincts 00:15:58.49\00:16:00.92 of survival? 00:16:00.96\00:16:03.29 "And when Pilate heard this, verse 13, 00:16:03.32\00:16:05.99 he brought Jesus out 00:16:06.03\00:16:08.10 and sat him down on the judge's seat 00:16:08.13\00:16:09.66 at a place known as the stone pavement, 00:16:09.70\00:16:11.93 which in Aramaic is Gabbatha. 00:16:11.97\00:16:14.67 It was the day of preparation of the Passover." 00:16:14.70\00:16:17.54 It was about noon. 00:16:17.57\00:16:19.17 "Here is your king,' 00:16:19.21\00:16:20.94 Pilate said to the Jews. 00:16:20.98\00:16:22.81 But they shouted, 'Take him away! 00:16:22.84\00:16:24.81 Take him away! Crucify him! 00:16:24.85\00:16:26.98 'Shall I crucify your king?' 00:16:27.02\00:16:30.82 Pilate incredulously asks. 00:16:30.85\00:16:33.72 'We have no king but Caesar,' 00:16:33.76\00:16:36.73 the chief priest answered.' " 00:16:36.76\00:16:39.29 And so finally, 00:16:39.33\00:16:43.37 the great disappointment for me, 00:16:43.40\00:16:46.27 Pilate handed Him over to them 00:16:46.30\00:16:48.70 to be crucified. 00:16:51.87\00:16:56.14 "So the soldiers took charge of Jesus, 00:16:56.18\00:16:58.31 verse 17, 00:16:58.35\00:17:00.08 carrying his own cross. 00:17:00.12\00:17:02.02 He went out to the place of the Skull, 00:17:02.05\00:17:03.82 which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 00:17:03.85\00:17:07.19 There they crucified Him with two others, 00:17:07.22\00:17:09.62 one on each side and Jesus in the middle." 00:17:09.66\00:17:14.26 Isn't that amazing? 00:17:14.30\00:17:16.73 Jesus had been standing at Gabbatha 00:17:16.77\00:17:21.04 where a guilty governor 00:17:21.07\00:17:23.37 condemned to death an innocent man. 00:17:23.41\00:17:26.41 And now Jesus is standing at Golgotha 00:17:26.44\00:17:30.25 where guilty sinners like you and me 00:17:30.28\00:17:32.45 condemn an innocent Savior, 00:17:32.48\00:17:35.78 Gabbatha, Golgotha. 00:17:35.82\00:17:38.42 Anyway, you cut it, ladies and gentlemen, 00:17:38.45\00:17:40.36 we are all guilty. 00:17:40.39\00:17:43.49 Every single one of us. 00:17:43.53\00:17:44.89 Verse 19, 00:17:48.06\00:17:49.40 "And Pilate had a notice prepared 00:17:49.43\00:17:50.77 and fastened to the cross. 00:17:50.80\00:17:53.10 It read, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 00:17:53.13\00:17:57.07 Many of the Jews read this sign 00:17:57.11\00:17:58.77 for the place where Jesus was crucified 00:17:58.81\00:18:00.34 was near the city. 00:18:00.38\00:18:01.71 And the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 00:18:01.74\00:18:04.38 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, 00:18:04.41\00:18:07.38 do not write 'the King of the Jews, ' 00:18:07.42\00:18:09.75 but that this man claimed to be King of the Jews.' 00:18:09.78\00:18:13.02 And for once, 00:18:13.05\00:18:15.59 Pilate has guts and he answered, 00:18:15.62\00:18:19.13 'What I have written I have written.' 00:27:35.08\00:27:36.75 Yep. 00:27:36.79\00:27:38.12 You and me? 00:27:38.15\00:27:39.49 Oh! 00:27:39.52\00:27:40.86 Jen Pollock Michel in her wonderful book, 00:27:43.36\00:27:47.13 surprised by paradox 00:27:47.16\00:27:49.70 describes us proud sinners this way. 00:27:49.73\00:27:52.20 You got to get this, proud sinners 00:27:52.23\00:27:54.34 and she borrows from the language 00:27:54.37\00:27:55.70 of GK Chesterton, 00:27:55.74\00:27:57.07 one of the great 20th century English writers. 00:27:57.11\00:27:58.54 All right. 00:27:58.57\00:27:59.91 So we'll put the words on the screen. 00:27:59.94\00:28:02.04 "Christian humility, she writes, 00:28:02.08\00:28:04.51 is both great pride as well as great prostration. 00:28:04.55\00:28:08.88 On the one hand, we must recognize 00:28:08.92\00:28:10.35 that we are the chief of creatures,' 00:28:10.39\00:28:12.02 wow, 00:28:12.05\00:28:13.39 "crowned with glory and honor, 00:28:13.42\00:28:14.76 to quote the words of the psalmist. 00:28:14.79\00:28:16.12 Unlike anything else in all creation, 00:28:16.16\00:28:18.03 we alone, think of this. 00:28:18.06\00:28:19.93 We alone bear the image of God. 00:28:19.96\00:28:22.33 But on the other hand, 00:28:22.36\00:28:23.93 we must acknowledge that 00:28:23.97\00:28:25.30 we are not just the chief of creatures. 00:28:25.33\00:28:27.04 We are also the chief of sinners. 00:28:27.07\00:28:29.84 We would greedily vie for all that is God's... 00:28:29.87\00:28:32.84 The consistent testimony of Scripture is 00:28:32.87\00:28:35.01 how good humans are at screwing up." 00:28:35.04\00:28:40.92 And that's the gospel truth. 00:28:40.95\00:28:45.05 Now let me speak plainly to you. 00:28:45.09\00:28:48.52 The risk of focusing too intently 00:28:48.56\00:28:51.36 and I hope we haven't. 00:28:51.39\00:28:53.06 On this single line, 00:28:53.09\00:28:54.43 the maker of all things loves and wants me. 00:28:54.46\00:28:57.37 The risk is... 00:28:57.40\00:29:00.44 A subtle subconscious downplaying 00:29:00.47\00:29:03.67 of our innate sinfulness. 00:29:03.71\00:29:07.01 Well, you know what? I'm not that bad. 00:29:07.04\00:29:08.78 Oh, sure. 00:29:08.81\00:29:10.15 I screw up now and then, but so does everybody else, 00:29:10.18\00:29:12.35 and besides the maker of all things 00:29:12.38\00:29:13.75 loves and wants me. 00:29:13.78\00:29:15.12 So what's not to like about that? 00:29:15.15\00:29:17.49 That's a danger 00:29:17.52\00:29:18.85 because it usually takes a moral meltdown 00:29:22.46\00:29:25.16 of some sort or magnitude. 00:29:25.19\00:29:28.80 Peter's denial. 00:29:28.83\00:29:30.83 Judas' betrayal, 00:29:30.87\00:29:32.20 and by the way, Judas, if he had, after the betrayal, 00:29:32.23\00:29:34.14 gone to Jesus sincerely and had repented, 00:29:34.17\00:29:36.57 he would have been received as back, 00:29:36.60\00:29:38.21 back as fast as Peter was received back. 00:29:38.24\00:29:42.24 But he didn't, he killed himself. 00:29:42.28\00:29:44.75 David's moral crash and burn. 00:29:47.98\00:29:53.59 Saul who became 00:29:53.62\00:29:54.96 Paul's slaughter of the innocence 00:29:54.99\00:29:58.29 to choke off his guilty conscience 00:29:58.33\00:30:01.83 over Steven's death. 00:30:01.86\00:30:05.13 It oftentimes not always, 00:30:05.17\00:30:07.64 but it oftentimes takes a moral meltdown 00:30:07.67\00:30:10.51 of some sort to break us free from our delusional. 00:30:10.54\00:30:13.58 I'm okay. You're okay. 00:30:13.61\00:30:15.21 Deception. That is a deception. 00:30:15.24\00:30:17.11 We are not okay. 00:30:17.15\00:30:20.38 I know the maker of all things loves and wants us, 00:30:20.42\00:30:23.12 but that's to His credit, not you, not mine. 00:30:23.15\00:30:27.62 We're not okay. 00:30:27.66\00:30:30.09 We are sinners. 00:30:30.13\00:30:32.26 And one day we will stand 00:30:32.29\00:30:33.63 before the God of this universe, 00:30:33.66\00:30:35.00 who is the judge of all life forms, 00:30:35.03\00:30:38.53 a God whose eye reads us as if we were naked 00:30:38.57\00:30:41.67 and reads every truth about us that exists. 00:30:41.70\00:30:47.31 You try to blow that off. 00:30:47.34\00:30:48.68 Well, that's not for me. 00:30:48.71\00:30:50.05 Oh, it is, sir, for you. 00:30:50.08\00:30:53.42 We are all sinners and we are not okay. 00:30:53.45\00:30:58.92 And we hang on to this desperate solitary 00:30:58.95\00:31:01.29 hope that the maker of all things 00:31:01.32\00:31:02.66 who loves and wants us 00:31:02.69\00:31:04.03 will have mercy on us and grant us the forgiveness 00:31:04.06\00:31:06.29 we so desperately need. 00:31:06.33\00:31:07.90 That's what we hold to. 00:31:07.93\00:31:11.13 That's our only hope, 00:31:11.17\00:31:14.67 our word dinner. 00:31:14.70\00:31:16.04 And by the way, even though we don't sin here, huh? 00:31:18.94\00:31:23.45 We don't sin here, 00:31:23.48\00:31:25.78 but we sin up here 00:31:25.81\00:31:28.98 and this is as damning as this. 00:31:29.02\00:31:34.92 And then we have the sin of pride, 00:31:34.96\00:31:36.69 the most damning of all sins. 00:31:36.73\00:31:38.86 I thank God. 00:31:38.89\00:31:41.33 I'm not like her. 00:31:41.36\00:31:43.20 I'm not like him. 00:31:43.23\00:31:45.17 Thank you, Jesus. 00:31:45.20\00:31:47.10 You are like her, 00:31:47.14\00:31:49.14 you are just like him. 00:31:49.17\00:31:52.34 Neither of you is okay 00:31:52.37\00:31:55.24 without what we've come to celebrate right now. 00:31:55.28\00:32:00.32 How's that go again? 00:32:00.35\00:32:01.68 Verse 10, 00:32:01.72\00:32:03.05 "This is love: not that we loved God, 00:32:03.08\00:32:05.72 but that He loved us and sent His Son 00:32:05.75\00:32:07.49 as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." 00:32:07.52\00:32:10.56 But hallelujah, it doesn't end there. 00:32:10.59\00:32:11.99 I want you to drop down to verse 19 one more line, 00:32:12.03\00:32:14.80 our last line. 00:32:14.83\00:32:16.16 "We love Him because He first loved us." 00:32:16.20\00:32:22.00 Does your Bible read that way? 00:32:22.04\00:32:23.51 We love Him because He first loved us. 00:32:23.54\00:32:27.11 There's something deep inside of us 00:32:27.14\00:32:30.31 that responds to the story of Calvary 00:32:30.35\00:32:35.05 and is called reciprocal love, 00:32:35.08\00:32:38.79 reciprocal love. 00:32:38.82\00:32:41.86 For the maker of all things loves and wants me. 00:32:41.89\00:32:43.69 Guess what? 00:32:43.73\00:32:45.06 I love, and I want Him back. 00:32:45.09\00:32:47.20 Don't you? 00:32:47.23\00:32:49.90 When parents say to their kids 00:32:49.93\00:32:51.27 and kids shout it back to mom and dad, 00:32:51.30\00:32:53.27 even as they get older, 00:32:53.30\00:32:54.64 I love you back, Dad, 00:32:54.67\00:32:56.87 I love you back, Mom. 00:32:56.91\00:32:58.67 When friends say that to each other, 00:32:58.71\00:33:00.21 one expresses love 00:33:00.24\00:33:01.58 and the other quickly, I love you back. 00:33:01.61\00:33:04.58 It's reciprocal love. 00:33:04.61\00:33:08.02 And when you come to the foot of this cross 00:33:08.05\00:33:10.12 that we are at now, 00:33:10.15\00:33:12.15 that's what gets birthed. 00:33:12.19\00:33:15.36 I love you back. 00:33:15.39\00:33:17.29 I love you and want you back. 00:33:17.33\00:33:21.80 And by the way, I just learned this week. 00:33:21.83\00:33:23.73 As I read it in the original language of Greek, 00:33:23.77\00:33:26.87 amazing. 00:33:26.90\00:33:28.24 This loving back kind of love. 00:33:28.27\00:33:29.77 May I put it on the screen for you this way. 00:33:29.80\00:33:32.11 We agapao, oh, 00:33:32.14\00:33:33.88 that means we, 00:33:33.91\00:33:35.38 the agapao is the first person singular 00:33:35.41\00:33:37.28 of two love self-sacrificingly. 00:33:37.31\00:33:40.18 We agapao or love Him. 00:33:40.22\00:33:42.08 God with self-sacrificing love 00:33:42.12\00:33:44.55 because He first agapao or loved us 00:33:44.59\00:33:47.52 with self-sacrificing love. 00:33:47.56\00:33:49.22 It's not enough to know that 00:33:49.26\00:33:50.59 the maker of all things loves and wants me. 00:33:50.63\00:33:52.76 That truth goes like this. 00:33:52.79\00:33:57.13 Take my hand then. 00:33:57.17\00:33:58.87 You're right. 00:33:58.90\00:34:00.24 It's nail scarred. 00:34:00.27\00:34:03.07 I want you to love me back with self-sacrificing love. 00:34:03.10\00:34:09.68 You may have to sacrifice your career. 00:34:09.71\00:34:12.18 You may have to sacrifice 00:34:12.21\00:34:13.55 the major that you were pursuing 00:34:13.58\00:34:14.92 because the Spirit of God 00:34:14.95\00:34:16.28 is leaning hard on you to move another way. 00:34:16.32\00:34:18.49 You may have to sacrifice the relationship 00:34:18.52\00:34:20.52 that is taking you further down every hour it endures. 00:34:20.56\00:34:25.43 You may have to sacrifice financially, 00:34:25.46\00:34:28.23 money that you have been hoarding, 00:34:28.26\00:34:29.60 money that you've been saying, 00:34:29.63\00:34:30.97 well, I'll just use this for myself. 00:34:31.00\00:34:32.87 Thank you God anyway. 00:34:32.90\00:34:35.50 Self-sacrificing love means 00:34:35.54\00:34:37.27 just that you sacrifice yourself. 00:34:37.31\00:34:40.28 I love you back. 00:34:40.31\00:34:41.64 How, Dwight? 00:34:41.68\00:34:43.01 I love you back. 00:34:43.04\00:34:44.55 Self sacrificingly. 00:34:44.58\00:34:48.55 Show me. 00:34:48.58\00:34:51.52 Peter, you love me? 00:34:51.55\00:34:55.62 I already know everything. 00:34:55.66\00:34:58.79 You know the truth. 00:34:58.83\00:35:01.66 Peter, do you love me? 00:35:01.70\00:35:07.17 You know my heart, 00:35:07.20\00:35:08.90 you know everything. 00:35:08.94\00:35:10.71 Peter, 00:35:10.74\00:35:14.58 do you love me? 00:35:14.61\00:35:18.65 Oh, God, 00:35:18.68\00:35:21.48 I love You and I want you back. 00:35:21.52\00:35:24.89 Okay. 00:35:24.92\00:35:27.19 One day you will stretch out your arms 00:35:27.22\00:35:32.13 and you'll be taken to where you didn't wanna go. 00:35:32.16\00:35:34.36 I'll understand. 00:35:37.77\00:35:39.93 And I'll be with you. 00:35:39.97\00:35:41.30 Reciprocal love. 00:35:46.64\00:35:50.41 And so we all bow down. 00:35:50.45\00:35:52.55 I mean, what else can you do, but love Him back. 00:35:52.58\00:35:57.45 So, I want you to listen to these words now. 00:35:57.49\00:35:58.85 My young friend, William Dos Reis, 00:35:58.89\00:36:01.76 he's gonna come up here to the keyboard 00:36:01.79\00:36:03.12 and he's gonna sing this song 00:36:03.16\00:36:05.49 as if he wrote it himself. 00:36:05.53\00:36:06.86 It's that beautiful. 00:36:06.90\00:36:08.83 Just think of this reciprocal love 00:36:08.86\00:36:11.93 that William sings about right now. 00:36:11.97\00:36:14.24 Princes and paupers 00:36:38.13\00:36:41.43 Sons and daughters 00:36:41.46\00:36:44.90 Kneel at the throne of grace 00:36:44.93\00:36:51.37 And losers and winners 00:36:51.41\00:36:54.61 All the saints and sinners 00:36:54.64\00:36:58.21 One day will see His face 00:36:58.25\00:37:04.29 And we all bow down 00:37:04.32\00:37:08.49 Kings will surrender Their crowns 00:37:11.69\00:37:17.47 And worship Jesus 00:37:17.50\00:37:21.50 He is the love 00:37:24.94\00:37:28.24 Unfailing love 00:37:28.28\00:37:31.65 He is the love of God 00:37:31.68\00:37:35.98 And summer and winter 00:37:41.56\00:37:44.89 The mountains and the rivers 00:37:44.93\00:37:48.33 Whisper our Savior's name 00:40:30.36\00:40:32.09 with an envelope that came to you 00:40:32.13\00:40:35.06 and you'll hand it to the postmaster 00:40:35.10\00:40:36.70 and he'll grab a red stamp 00:40:36.73\00:40:38.07 and he will stamp on that envelope, 00:40:38.10\00:40:41.77 return to sender. 00:40:41.80\00:40:45.27 That's what we've come to do today. 00:40:45.31\00:40:48.78 Let's pray. 00:40:48.81\00:40:50.15 Oh, God. 00:40:50.18\00:40:52.51 All winter long, 00:40:52.55\00:40:53.92 we've been reminding ourselves 00:40:53.95\00:40:55.28 the maker of all things loves and wants me. 00:40:55.32\00:41:00.36 And now through this beautiful moment 00:41:00.39\00:41:01.92 of communion, 00:41:01.96\00:41:03.29 we get to love you back. 00:41:03.32\00:41:06.53 So let this reciprocal love bind us together 00:41:06.56\00:41:09.53 with each other and with you right now, 00:41:09.56\00:41:12.57 we pray. 00:41:12.60\00:41:15.34 Amen. 00:41:15.37\00:41:18.47 And so we come to this COVID-19 00:41:26.01\00:41:28.65 especially heartwarming for me. 00:41:28.68\00:41:33.25 That means that the bread and the wine 00:41:33.29\00:41:35.66 that we will drink 00:41:35.69\00:41:37.03 has been carefully pre-packaged 00:41:37.06\00:41:38.69 and you already got the packet when you walked in, 00:41:38.73\00:41:41.40 I saw you coming in and just grabbing it. 00:41:41.43\00:41:43.67 Now some of you may have gotten in 00:41:43.70\00:41:45.20 without getting the packet and that's okay. 00:41:45.23\00:41:46.94 We got deacons right now that will come to you 00:41:46.97\00:41:49.50 in this split second. 00:41:49.54\00:41:50.87 So just hold your hand up, please. 00:41:50.91\00:41:52.74 Would you hold your hand up, 00:41:52.77\00:41:54.41 so that we can keep your hands up? 00:41:54.44\00:41:58.08 We're gonna move the furniture now 00:41:58.11\00:42:00.38 to put the Lord's table right here front and center. 00:42:00.42\00:42:04.29 Our singers are gonna sing a beautiful song, living hope. 00:42:04.32\00:42:08.89 And so you just meditate out. 00:42:08.92\00:42:10.26 Keep your hand up 00:42:10.29\00:42:11.63 if the ushers are coming your way. 00:42:11.66\00:42:13.09 moment. 00:42:19.70\00:42:21.80 How great the chasm 00:42:43.46\00:42:47.30 That lay between us 00:42:47.33\00:42:51.10 How high the mountain 00:42:51.13\00:42:54.94 I could not climb 00:42:54.97\00:42:58.64 In desperation, 00:42:58.67\00:43:02.38 I turned to heaven 00:43:02.41\00:43:06.01 And spoke your name 00:43:06.05\00:43:08.75 Into the night 00:43:08.78\00:43:13.19 Then me. 00:48:32.24\00:48:36.71 We go back in our mind's eye, got two elders with us. 00:48:36.75\00:48:41.78 Julie Clayburn is gonna read the account, 00:48:41.82\00:48:44.85 the Gospel of Mark of that Thursday night. 00:48:44.89\00:48:49.92 "While we were eating, Jesus took bread, 00:48:49.96\00:48:52.49 and when He had given thanks, 00:48:52.53\00:48:53.86 He broke it and gave His, to His disciples saying, 00:48:53.90\00:48:56.53 'Take it. 00:48:56.56\00:48:57.90 This is my body.' 00:48:57.93\00:48:59.27 Then He took a cup and we had given thanks, 00:48:59.30\00:49:01.34 He gave it to them and they all drank from it. 00:49:01.37\00:49:04.34 'This is My blood of the covenant, 00:49:04.37\00:49:05.87 which is poured out for many,' 00:49:05.91\00:49:07.24 He said to them. 00:49:07.28\00:49:08.61 Truly, I tell you, I will not drink again 00:49:08.64\00:49:10.81 from the fruit of the vine 00:49:10.85\00:49:12.61 until the day when I drink it new 00:49:12.65\00:49:14.78 in the kingdom of God.'" 00:49:14.82\00:49:18.45 Bow your head and heart with us 00:49:18.49\00:49:21.69 as Anthony Yeboah ask God's blessing 00:49:21.72\00:49:24.23 on these elements. 00:49:24.26\00:49:28.06 Our Lord and our Savior, 00:49:28.10\00:49:31.73 in the upper room 00:49:31.77\00:49:34.17 the record says that 00:49:34.20\00:49:37.37 You took bread, 00:49:37.41\00:49:39.87 You blessed it, 00:49:39.91\00:49:42.08 You broke it and gave it to Your disciples. 00:49:42.11\00:49:46.58 In a similar way 00:49:46.61\00:49:49.45 You give thanks for the cup. 00:49:49.48\00:49:52.22 And You told them, 00:49:52.25\00:49:54.96 drink all of you from it, 00:49:54.99\00:49:58.33 for this is the cup of the New Testament 00:49:58.36\00:50:03.47 shed for you and for all sins. 00:50:03.50\00:50:08.60 And so now, Father, as we get ready 00:50:08.64\00:50:12.41 to partake of these emblems 00:50:12.44\00:50:15.11 of your broken body and your spilled blood, 00:50:15.14\00:50:18.51 we ask Your blessing upon them 00:50:18.55\00:50:21.32 that we will derive strength from this 00:50:21.35\00:50:26.02 to live for you. 00:50:26.05\00:50:28.36 That we will really remember Your wonderful death for us 00:50:28.39\00:50:33.33 on the cross of Calvary. 00:50:33.36\00:50:35.23 Tell you, come again. 00:50:35.26\00:50:37.20 We ask this through Your name. 00:50:37.23\00:50:39.23 Amen. Amen. 00:50:39.27\00:50:40.84 Amen. Thank you, Anthony. 00:50:40.87\00:50:42.57 That Thursday night, 00:50:48.54\00:50:49.88 Jesus turned to the closest followers He had 00:50:49.91\00:50:54.88 and what'd He said then? 00:50:54.92\00:50:56.25 He said, He says to us now, 00:50:56.28\00:50:58.55 "Take, eat this symbol of My broken body. 00:50:58.59\00:51:02.92 Do this in remembrance of Me." 00:51:02.96\00:51:05.49 And then there's a second layer 00:51:29.25\00:51:32.42 now to remove. 00:51:32.45\00:51:33.79 Just to be safe, turn it away from you 00:51:33.82\00:51:35.66 so that if there's, if it's under pressure, 00:51:35.69\00:51:37.49 it won't pop all over you. 00:51:40.56\00:51:42.26 Only open it halfway, 00:51:42.30\00:51:43.73 but you can drink from it. 00:51:47.20\00:51:50.44 Here it is. 00:51:50.47\00:51:53.51 In the same way Jesus handed the cup 00:51:53.54\00:51:57.18 to this who loved Him back. 00:51:57.21\00:52:01.62 And He says to us as well, 00:52:01.65\00:52:02.98 this is My blood, 00:52:03.02\00:52:06.65 which is shed for you. 00:52:06.69\00:52:09.39 Drink all of it. 00:52:09.42\00:52:11.49 You friends of mine 00:52:11.53\00:52:12.86 and do this in remembrance of me. 00:52:12.89\00:52:15.10 In your own way, you've just loved Him back. 00:52:33.35\00:52:36.48 And He's smiling. 00:52:36.52\00:52:38.59 As that reaches out to you and me, 00:52:38.62\00:52:42.59 we will leave this place in a few moments 00:52:42.62\00:52:45.23 to the world and the life that awaits us. 00:52:45.26\00:52:48.60 But the maker of all things goes with us. 00:52:48.63\00:52:51.90 So they sang a hymn before they left 00:52:51.93\00:52:53.70 and our singers are ready to sing 00:52:53.74\00:52:55.07 this beautiful gospel hymn, 00:52:55.10\00:52:56.84 Jesus paid it all 00:52:56.87\00:52:58.57 and they thought Judas was going out, 00:52:58.61\00:53:00.41 getting money for the poor, 00:53:00.44\00:53:01.78 because that was a custom. 00:53:01.81\00:53:03.51 And so we're gonna receive an emergency aid offering. 00:53:03.55\00:53:07.98 As you leave from the balcony, from the back, from the front, 00:53:08.02\00:53:11.72 there'll be an usher standing there. 00:53:11.75\00:53:14.16 If God's blessed you these last three months. 00:53:14.19\00:53:15.92 Trust me 00:53:15.96\00:53:17.29 what you give 00:53:17.33\00:53:18.66 goes immediately to work in this county. 00:53:18.69\00:53:21.33 But now let's keep worshiping as we hum with our singers, 00:53:21.36\00:53:27.10 Jesus paid it all. 00:53:27.14\00:53:30.74 By the way, there will be, there will be, 00:53:30.77\00:53:33.31 excuse me for interrupting, 00:53:33.34\00:53:34.74 but there'll be a receptacle for this 00:53:34.78\00:53:36.11 when you leave. 00:53:36.14\00:53:37.48 So you just keep this with you and you'll be fine. 00:53:37.51\00:53:39.38 I hear the Savior say 00:53:47.82\00:53:53.40 Thy strength indeed is small 00:53:53.43\00:53:58.83 Child of weakness, 00:53:58.87\00:54:01.74 watch and pray 00:54:01.77\00:54:04.67 Find in me thine all in all 00:54:04.71\00:54:11.21 Jesus paid it all 00:54:11.25\00:54:16.79 All to Him I owe 00:54:16.82\00:54:22.62 Sin had left a crimson stain
