I am from Canada, originally 00:06:47.90\00:06:51.37 born in the Philippines. And I am one of the student 00:06:51.37\00:06:54.51 chaplains here at Andrews University. 00:06:54.51\00:06:57.21 This is my story of being involved in service. Growing up, I was blessed enough 00:06:57.25\00:07:03.35 to be, you know, with two loving parents, great siblings, and we were blessed growing up. 00:07:03.35\00:07:10.09 And I think my parents really instilled the fact that, you know, we have to share our 00:07:10.09\00:07:15.36 blessings, especially with family members because they weren't as fortunate as we were. 00:07:15.36\00:07:20.80 And, so, I've always, you know, known the idea that I have to give whenever there are people 00:07:20.80\00:07:26.47 in need, and if I can share those blessings, you know, it will make them happy, and I know 00:07:26.47\00:07:32.08 that, in the end, it's, you know, for God when I do share my 00:07:32.08\00:07:36.62 blessings. I think one of the main lessons that I've learned is that there is always a need. 00:07:36.62\00:07:41.02 One of my social work professors would always say, like, you know, there will always be 00:07:41.02\00:07:45.69 poor people around you. And service taught me that, you know, we have to see the 00:07:45.69\00:07:50.30 need and we have to serve the people in need, and especially during this time, you know, of 00:07:50.30\00:07:55.60 a pandemic and COVID, a lot of people are in need, a lot of 00:07:55.60\00:08:00.28 people lost jobs. They're lonely. And, so, I remember one of our projects that we did last 00:08:00.28\00:08:04.18 semester was actually write cards to the homeless people, or just even, like, the seniors. 00:08:04.18\00:08:09.52 You know, I didn't understand how important it would be to 00:08:09.52\00:08:13.25 them. You know, I saw it as another service project, but, you know, we got feedback, and 00:08:13.25\00:08:18.33 they said all the senior residents actually loved the fact that we wrote them cards 00:08:18.33\00:08:23.10 because they felt loved and, you know, they were thought about, you know, during this time where 00:08:23.10\00:08:28.17 a lot of people might not visit them or, you know, talk to them. So a lot of people think, 00:08:28.17\00:08:32.77 you know, to serve people, you have to make these grand gestures or go on a mission 00:08:32.77\00:08:37.58 trip, you know. I've been to those. I've been to mission 00:08:37.58\00:08:41.58 trips, and I tell you, you know, they're an amazing experience, but you can serve people, you 00:08:41.58\00:08:46.99 know, within your own community, and I think that is so important. You know, within your 00:08:46.99\00:08:51.76 own circle of friends. And that is really what I've learned throughout these years, 00:08:51.76\00:08:55.56 you know, just showing love to people in your community and, you know, your friends. 00:08:55.56\00:09:00.04 And it's what God calls us to do. So I think that's -- 00:09:00.04\00:09:04.21 Service is just doing those things and having a willing heart to serve those around you. 00:09:04.21\00:09:09.74 I'm Hope and this is my story. い 00:09:09.74\00:09:18.99 [ "Build My Life" begins ] 00:09:22.46\00:09:26.63 >> Let's pray the prayer again. Father, you heard us sing it. I will build my life upon your 00:12:31.11\00:12:37.62 love. It is a firm foundation. Oh, boy. 00:12:37.62\00:12:41.62 On this planet, right now, we need that firm foundation, as 00:12:41.62\00:12:48.03 survivors. I will put my trust in you alone and I will not be shaken. By your grace, Father. 00:12:48.03\00:12:56.10 We're listening carefully now. Don't let us be shaken. In Jesus' name, we pray. 00:12:56.10\00:13:03.14 Amen. 00:13:03.14\00:13:04.88 If Jesus is coming soon, and I believe he is... 00:13:04.91\00:13:13.22 and if he left us a mission... Before he returned to heaven, 00:13:13.22\00:13:22.06 and I believe he did, did he say this? 00:13:22.06\00:13:26.03 What year is this? 2021? What verse is that? John 20:21. Hmm. 00:13:31.07\00:13:39.11 And if our mission was to deliver a message that would be compellingly simple... 00:13:39.11\00:13:49.32 and I believe it is, how could you get more simple than this? "The maker of all things loves 00:13:49.32\00:13:56.46 and wants me." If all of that is true, then could it be... 00:13:56.46\00:14:04.37 that the fulfillment of this mission, the living it out, is to be as simple as the message, 00:14:04.37\00:14:11.18 uncomplicated? As uncomplicated as a poem once written. 00:14:11.18\00:14:19.49 As simple as this. Now, look at, the poem is not about Jesus. 00:14:19.49\00:14:25.56 Although maybe it is. We're going to read the poem together 00:14:25.56\00:14:32.87 right now. You may never have heard it -- heard of it in your life. The New England Historical 00:14:32.87\00:14:39.37 Society has written that this poem became one of the most popular poems in America decades 00:14:39.37\00:14:47.18 ago. Written by a Massachusetts librarian. 00:14:47.18\00:14:51.69 Isn't that something? A librarian. And his name? 00:14:51.69\00:14:54.86 Sam Walter Foss. The title of the poem -- "The House by the 00:14:54.86\00:15:00.73 Side of the Road." I'm going to put the bibliographical information right here on the 00:15:00.73\00:15:06.87 screen right now, and I would love it if you would download this poem. You'll see. 00:15:06.87\00:15:11.91 We're going to read it together. But just take a picture of that, and then, you can download it 00:15:11.91\00:15:16.41 later. It's all over Google. It's worth coming back to again 00:15:16.41\00:15:20.52 and again. Every time I read this poem, something is stirred 00:15:20.52\00:15:24.29 up in my soul, and I get to read it again right now with you. So, without further ado, "The 00:15:24.29\00:15:29.36 House by the Side of the Road." 00:15:29.36\00:15:31.46 Last stanza. 00:16:52.54\00:16:54.48 Isn't that good? I got to have that on my phone so I can read 00:17:20.20\00:17:24.41 that again and again. Download it. Something happens in me when 00:17:24.41\00:17:29.88 I read that line -- "Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." 00:17:29.88\00:17:34.42 I want to be a fr-- I want to be a friend to man. I want to be a 00:17:34.42\00:17:37.35 friend to woman. I want to be a friend to children. I want to be 00:17:37.35\00:17:39.62 a friend to the elderly. I want to be a friend with everybody. 00:17:39.62\00:17:43.09 I mean, wasn't Jesus that way? And by the way, Jesus was not an 00:17:43.09\00:17:48.16 extrovert. He was not an introvert. Jesus was Jesus. And the story you remember so 00:17:48.16\00:17:55.87 well begins this way. "And he was coming into the city of 00:17:55.87\00:18:03.21 Jericho." He'll be dead in a few days. He's coming into the city 00:18:03.21\00:18:07.75 of Jericho. That's right, the Jericho that lost its walls, long that ancient city long ago. 00:18:07.75\00:18:12.39 The walls have been rebuilt. And wherever Jesus is, there is a crowd swirling around him. 00:18:12.39\00:18:18.13 Shoot, if I had been alive when he was alive, I'd have been in that crowd every time I could 00:18:18.13\00:18:22.60 find a chance. Wouldn't you? They're swirling by, and you 00:18:22.60\00:18:26.57 know the noise of a crowd. And nobody notices that there is a blind beggar sitting by the 00:18:26.57\00:18:31.57 side of the road. Where most of Jesus' life happens, by the way. 00:18:31.57\00:18:36.88 By the side of the road. Now, when you're blind, your sense of hearing is very acute. 00:18:36.88\00:18:47.46 And so blind Bartimaeus can't see a thing. Smells the dust 00:18:47.46\00:18:54.76 kicked up by the crowd like a river swirling by. But he begins to pick up a name. A name that 00:18:54.76\00:19:02.44 has passed from lip to lip -- Jesus of Nazareth. And his heart jumps. Jesus of Nazareth! 00:19:02.44\00:19:07.48 Isn't this that miracle worker who healed lepers, who raised the dead, who gave legs back to 00:19:07.48\00:19:14.75 the lame? "I'm just a blind boy, but what could he do for me?" 00:19:14.75\00:19:19.99 And in his heart, Bartimaeus believes this is the moment of a lifetime, and he can't miss it 00:19:19.99\00:19:29.36 now. And so he does the only thing a blind man can do. 00:19:29.36\00:19:33.30 He sees no one. He has no idea where the one he's calling for 00:19:33.30\00:19:38.97 is, but he starts calling, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. Jesus, Son of David, have 00:19:38.97\00:19:45.91 mercy on me." And the crowd, a bit angry, bothered by the hot 00:19:45.91\00:19:51.35 dust, are quick to hush him up. "Shush!" My mother said you 00:19:51.35\00:19:55.49 never say "shut up" to somebody. "Shush your mouth." 00:19:55.49\00:19:59.33 The wrong thing to say to a desperate blind beggar. And all the louder now, "Jesus, 00:20:03.03\00:20:08.84 Son of David, have mercy on me! Jesus, Son of David, have mercy 00:20:08.84\00:20:13.17 on me!" He sees nothing. But Jesus hears every cry. I want you to know, whenever you 00:20:13.17\00:20:23.28 cry his name, the room may be packed or the space may be lonely, but he hears you every 00:20:23.28\00:20:31.96 single time. Jesus stops -- "Whoa! Hey, somebody's calling 00:20:31.96\00:20:38.03 me. Who is that? Who is this that is calling me? Find him and 00:20:38.03\00:20:45.07 bring him to me." Oh, let's pick up the record. This is Mark 10. Right near the end of Mark 10. 00:20:45.07\00:20:51.98 That dramatic short gospel. "Jesus stopped and said, "'Yo, 00:20:51.98\00:20:57.45 call him.' So they called to the blind man, 'Cheer up, boy! On 00:20:57.45\00:21:02.59 your feet! He's calling you." And Bartimaeus doesn't need a 00:21:02.59\00:21:06.83 second invitation. "Throwing his cloak aside" -- nothing's going to get caught between his legs 00:21:06.83\00:21:11.43 now -- "he jumps to his feet and he comes to Jesus." And he can't 00:21:11.43\00:21:15.14 see a thing. So he puts his hands out, and two strangers grab his hands, one on either 00:21:15.14\00:21:19.27 side, and they lead him. "Move. Move. Move. Move. Move." Here 00:21:19.27\00:21:23.18 comes Bartimaeus. "Move. Move. Move. Move. Move." Finally, they drop his arms. He doesn't know 00:21:23.18\00:21:32.59 where to look. But there stands Jesus. And I love what the voice 00:21:32.59\00:21:38.43 of Jesus asks. Take a look at this. What's the next line? Jesus, looking into those blind 00:21:38.43\00:21:44.60 eyes. But that earnest face asks one question. 00:21:44.60\00:21:51.67 "What do you want me to do to you, huh?" "What do you want me 00:21:51.67\00:21:56.81 to do to you?" Has he ever asked you that? Have you ever sat in 00:21:56.81\00:22:06.32 the silence and heard him whisper, "Girl, boy, what do you want me to do for you?" 00:22:06.32\00:22:14.96 What would you tell him? Hey, let's just close our eyes for a 00:22:14.96\00:22:19.00 moment. We'll be blind Bartimaeus right now. We'll 00:22:19.00\00:22:21.77 close our eyes for a moment. And let's just pretend -- and this 00:22:21.77\00:22:25.07 isn't pretending, by the way -- that Jesus is standing right here. Right in front of you. 00:22:25.07\00:22:29.21 And right now, because I'm going to quit talking, he's going to ask you the question, "What do 00:22:29.21\00:22:35.28 you want me to do for you?" Some of you, for years, have known in 00:22:35.28\00:22:43.39 your heart, if you could get one prayer answered, it would be this. Now's the time. 00:22:43.39\00:22:49.06 He's listening. Tell him. 00:22:49.06\00:22:53.37 You say, "Don't interrupt me right now, Dwight." I'm still 00:23:09.12\00:23:12.62 talking to him." I know. You're going to carry on this 00:23:12.62\00:23:16.06 conversation. The question will still be the same when you get 00:23:16.06\00:23:19.46 back to your room. He wants to know. "What do you want me to do 00:23:19.46\00:23:23.57 to you?" That's what he asked. "'What do you want me to do for you?' Jesus asked him." 00:23:23.57\00:23:27.60 And then, "The blind man said, 'Rabbi...'" How long would it 00:23:27.60\00:23:35.14 take you to answer? "Rabbi, I want to see." I want to see, 00:23:35.14\00:23:43.28 please. "Go." Boy, Jesus doesn't mince words, does he? 00:23:47.26\00:23:50.96 When he finds out what it is your heart wants most, the reply from him may be as simple as 00:23:50.96\00:23:55.60 this. "'Go,' said Jesus, 'your faith has healed you.' 00:23:55.60\00:24:00.27 And immediately, Bartimaeus received his sight and followed 00:24:00.27\00:24:06.34 Jesus..." What are the next three words? "Along the road." 00:24:06.34\00:24:11.65 You know why? Because Jesus lived in the house by the side of the road and most of his life 00:24:11.65\00:24:19.45 happens along that road. And guess what? When you follow 00:24:19.45\00:24:23.96 Jesus... along that road, you'll build your house by the side of 00:24:23.96\00:24:30.00 that road. And when the crowds swirl around you, the traffic of life, you will know that, just 00:24:30.00\00:24:35.90 like your master, you've been placed where they are. "And he 00:24:35.90\00:24:43.91 followed Jesus along the road." How does that line go? 00:24:43.91\00:24:48.18 In fact, Jesus gets only a few yards down the Jericho road. Only Dr. Luke, chronologically, 00:25:04.17\00:25:13.58 gets it and pastes the two stories together. The others put 00:25:13.58\00:25:19.28 the story wherever they want it. Matthew and Mark. So we have to 00:25:19.28\00:25:23.55 go to Luke. He's just told the story of Bartimaeus. Now it's 00:25:23.55\00:25:28.06 Luke 19. And notice how it begins. 00:25:28.06\00:25:29.92 Do you know why? Because he had to go, that's why. 00:25:34.83\00:25:37.83 He had to go. He could have gone around Jericho. 00:25:37.83\00:25:40.84 He could have said, "Listen, let's get to Jerusalem. I'm getting ready to die in a 00:25:40.84\00:25:45.41 few days." Nope, he has to go through Jericho. 00:25:45.41\00:25:48.88 There will be somebody in Jericho. Not a blind beggar, but 00:25:48.88\00:25:53.21 a filthy rich tax collector. Who, even with his platform shoes on, can't see over 00:25:53.21\00:26:01.89 the crowd. 00:26:01.89\00:26:03.99 "He wanted to see" -- on his tippy-toes -- "who Jesus was, but because he was short he 00:26:11.63\00:26:17.14 could not see over the crowd." But by the side of the road that Jesus travels is a sycamore 00:26:17.14\00:26:23.65 tree, and that ungainly, short, little businessman type scrambles up that tree 00:26:23.65\00:26:29.68 and precariously dangles from an overhanging bow just so that he 00:26:29.68\00:26:37.49 can see Jesus. If Jesus had stood in front of his heart early that morning and said, 00:26:37.49\00:26:43.03 "What do you want me to do for you?" Zacchaeus' prayer would have been... "Just give me a 00:26:43.03\00:26:51.24 chance." "Just give me a chance." He doesn't dare breathe 00:26:51.24\00:26:59.21 the thought. And Jesus had to go through Jericho to see this sight. He'll never forget it. 00:26:59.21\00:27:05.59 The tax collector dangling. And with a smile on his face -- I'm sure it was -- Jesus looked 00:27:05.59\00:27:11.93 up and said, "Yo. I'll bet you're Zacchaeus. I've heard 00:27:11.93\00:27:16.90 about you. You know, listen." And he uses this word. "I need 00:27:16.90\00:27:21.34 you down here immediately. Do you hear me? You know why? 00:27:21.34\00:27:24.54 Because I have a dinner invitation. It's at your house 00:27:24.54\00:27:29.14 and we need to let your wife know right now. And Zacchaeus, Zacchaeus comes down, he came 00:27:29.14\00:27:36.12 down at once, and he welcomed Jesus gladly. He can't even get home. We are told that Zacchaeus 00:27:36.12\00:27:41.86 listened very carefully to the preaching of the thundering wilderness preacher 00:27:41.86\00:27:46.93 John the Baptizer. And he's been convicted. And we are told he's 00:27:46.93\00:27:52.90 already begun to act on that conviction. So he doesn't even get home. Watch this. 00:27:52.90\00:27:58.17 "All the people saw this, and they began to mutter, 'He has gone to be the guest 00:27:58.17\00:28:06.82 of a'" what? Oh, a real live sinner. Oh! 00:28:06.82\00:28:13.25 The Jews had a phrase. It's sort of slang catchall to pull in all 00:28:18.39\00:28:25.17 the tax collectors and prostitutes and other riffraff of the immoral. And the phrase 00:28:25.17\00:28:32.07 was "tax collectors and sinners." You just heard it. Luke has already introduced us 00:28:32.07\00:28:38.51 to that phrase, which is the preamble to the beautiful scripture about this shepherd 00:28:38.51\00:28:45.12 that won't sleep until the last sheep is home. And you may be 00:28:45.12\00:28:51.16 that sheep. I may be that sheep. Here's the preamble to it. Luke 00:28:51.16\00:28:57.10 15:1... He was like a magnet. I don't know why. The moral riffraff were drawn 00:29:01.20\00:29:05.64 him. You know why? Because nobody else cares for us 00:29:05.64\00:29:09.08 and everybody else has shut us out, but you love us. And they picked up on it like 00:29:09.08\00:29:15.12 fly to flypaper. "Now the tax collectors and sinners were all 00:29:15.12\00:29:22.79 gathering around to hear Jesus," but -- pah -- every party loves 00:29:22.79\00:29:26.06 a pooper. That's why we invited you, party pooper Pharisees. 00:29:26.06\00:29:29.26 [ Scoffs ] I know some churches that welcome sinners and eat 00:29:37.54\00:29:42.88 them. And there's a big difference. "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." 00:29:42.88\00:29:51.09 It is a calculated risk that Jesus takes to go home with 00:29:51.09\00:29:55.99 Zacchaeus. He knows exactly how the tongues will wag. "Desire of 00:29:55.99\00:30:02.43 Ages" dramatically describes the risk this way. Don't ever forget 00:30:02.43\00:30:06.60 what you're about to read. 00:30:06.60\00:30:08.80 Keep reading. 00:30:15.58\00:30:17.45 Your reputation is going to get smeared. They're going to start 00:30:24.45\00:30:27.62 talking about you, whispering about you. They'll eventually 00:30:27.62\00:30:30.59 throw you out. He knew the cost. Keep reading. 00:30:30.59\00:30:33.63 Several years ago, a group of homosexuals gathered for a camp 00:30:39.50\00:30:44.27 meeting. Kinship, they called it the Kinship Camp Meeting. I was a younger pastor then. 00:30:44.27\00:30:51.51 And the word was out word, word on the street. "You're not to 00:30:51.51\00:30:56.62 go. You're not -- Even if they invite you to preach, don't go. 00:30:56.62\00:31:02.86 We don't agree. We do not agree." And my eyes were wide as I began to read the names of 00:31:02.86\00:31:11.53 some leading pastors who said, "We're going anyway." That was 00:31:11.53\00:31:20.21 Jesus. "I'm going anyway, do you understand? 00:31:20.24\00:31:23.58 I'm going anyway. You want to stop me? 00:31:23.58\00:31:28.38 "But no question of policy could influence his movements." Keep 00:31:28.42\00:31:31.52 reading. "With him" -- Now, this is a big deal. 00:31:31.52\00:31:33.79 "I don't care about that tatted arm. 00:31:37.46\00:31:39.16 Those tattoos don't bother me. I don't care about the bangles 00:31:39.16\00:31:42.46 and the piercings on appendages all over that body. 00:31:42.46\00:31:47.24 I don't care what color the skin is. 00:31:47.24\00:31:49.74 I don't care how messed up the life is." 00:31:49.74\00:31:54.28 External. Those are all external 00:31:54.28\00:31:57.41 distinctions. 00:31:57.41\00:31:59.15 Why was Jesus not stopped by external distinctions? because the external is a facade 00:31:59.18\00:32:09.46 for the internal, and it's the internal that he was longing to 00:32:09.46\00:32:16.03 touch. "You can come any way you want, just come to me. You can come as you are, but I 00:32:16.03\00:32:22.44 will never leave you as you are." That's the kind of friend 00:32:22.44\00:32:27.71 He was. They loved Him for it. They threw parties for Him. 00:32:27.71\00:32:31.45 Keep reading. No, "that which appealed to Jesus' heart" -- 00:32:31.45\00:32:35.62 this is so beautiful. "That which appealed to Jesus' heart was a soul thirsting for 00:32:35.62\00:32:39.25 the water of life. How does that verse go? "Then why should I sit 00:32:39.25\00:32:43.56 in the scorner's seat?" Always picking, critical, critical, critical, critical. 00:32:43.56\00:32:47.00 Some churches make their living being critical of everybody else outside the church. 00:32:47.00\00:32:51.73 "Why would I sit in the scorner's seat? "Why will I hurl 00:32:51.73\00:32:55.04 the cynic's ban?" You've been banned? You can't come into this 00:32:55.04\00:32:59.04 church. You can't -- You can't do that. I'm sorry. 00:32:59.04\00:33:01.74 You -- You do not belong. Do you understand? Find another church 00:33:01.74\00:33:05.68 down the road." Well, find a church by the side of the road and you'll be fine. 00:33:05.68\00:33:10.02 Because churches that are built by the side of the road are built for the people that walk 00:33:10.02\00:33:14.52 the road, and they have no barrier to those who wish to 00:33:14.52\00:33:21.10 enter and worship. Find a church by the side of the road, not way 00:33:21.10\00:33:25.67 off. "Let me live in my house by the side of the road, and please, let me be a friend 00:33:29.34\00:33:35.94 to man. That was Jesus. And it was the spirit of 00:33:35.94\00:33:40.45 friendship, that spirit that won Zacchaeus' heart. Ah, come on. 00:33:40.45\00:33:44.39 So Zacchaeus, before -- Oh, ooh, ooh. Go back. "But Zacchaeus 00:33:44.39\00:33:47.66 stood up." So this is before. He's down from the tree, but he hasn't gone to the house yet. 00:33:47.66\00:33:51.83 And Jesus breaks down into a smile, and he needs the crowd to 00:34:03.10\00:34:07.28 hear this. "And Jesus said to him" -- to Zacchaeus, but he's talking to the crowd -- "'Today 00:34:07.28\00:34:12.38 salvation has come to this house because this man, too, is a son 00:34:12.38\00:34:16.38 of Abraham.'" You know what it means to be a son of Abraham? It means to be a member in good 00:34:16.38\00:34:20.86 and regular standing in the faith community. And Jesus, in 00:34:20.86\00:34:26.49 one declaration, makes that man good and regular, like all the 00:34:26.49\00:34:32.30 rest. Yeah, why would you do this, Jesus? Ah, I'll tell you. 00:34:37.57\00:34:40.91 "For the Son of Man came to seek and save" lost people. That's 00:34:40.91\00:34:47.88 why. Wow. "For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost." 00:34:47.88\00:34:54.16 What was that last line in that "Desire of Ages" quote? "That which appealed to Jesus' 00:34:54.16\00:34:59.43 heart was a soul thirsting for the Water of Life." That's all 00:34:59.43\00:35:03.23 that counts. "The external distinctions mean nothing to me. What's happening on the inside? 00:35:03.23\00:35:07.17 That's what I want to know." Shoo. A house by the side of the 00:35:07.17\00:35:13.74 road. He did it to Zacchaeus. He did it to Bartimaeus. He did it to the woman at the 00:35:13.74\00:35:18.05 well, he did it to the woman taken in adultery. He did it to 00:35:18.05\00:35:21.98 'em all. You know why? Because the maker of all things loves and wants me, that's why. 00:35:21.98\00:35:26.19 Never forget that sentence. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take this 00:35:26.19\00:35:30.96 sentence, the truth of this sentence, to the world. All 00:35:30.96\00:35:35.23 universal truth is summarized in this one line. All revealed universal truth is summarized in 00:35:35.23\00:35:40.94 this one line. The maker of all things loves and wants me. Which is why Jesus had his house 00:35:40.94\00:35:48.34 by the side of the road and why we must build our houses by the side of that same road. 00:35:48.34\00:35:53.18 Don't you think? The question that begs itself right now is, 00:35:53.18\00:35:57.19 "Okay, Dwight, how, how, how? I'm in a dormitory. I can't 00:35:57.19\00:36:00.42 build a house. I work on this campus. I live in the community. I work in a factory. 00:36:00.42\00:36:04.09 I work at the hospital. I'm in a clinic. I'm in an office. 00:36:04.09\00:36:07.30 I can't" -- What do you mean you can't? I ask you one question -- 00:36:07.30\00:36:12.13 are there people where you live? Are there people where you 00:36:12.13\00:36:16.10 study? Are there people where you work? Yep. Yep. Yep. Good. That's all you need. 00:36:16.10\00:36:21.11 You can build your house by the side of that road. I'm going to 00:36:21.11\00:36:26.45 leave you now with three simple steps to build your house by the side of the road. Jot these 00:36:26.45\00:36:31.72 three down. No study guides in these pandemic days. That's 00:36:31.72\00:36:34.19 okay. You'll remember them. I'm going to put them on the screen for you one at a time. 00:36:34.19\00:36:37.69 Number one. 00:36:37.69\00:36:39.46 Jesus had no idea who Bartimaeus was. They never met before. 00:36:44.47\00:36:48.77 He has never met Zacchaeus, but Jesus, not an extrovert, not an introvert, Jesus being Jesus 00:36:48.77\00:36:55.01 meets a stranger and then sets out to win that stranger to a 00:36:55.01\00:37:00.92 friendship. Be friend or befriend strangers. And there's no reason why you and I can't do 00:37:00.92\00:37:07.96 the same. I'm telling you what. There is no reason we can't. In 00:37:07.96\00:37:14.36 person or online. Social interaction or social media interaction, keyboard to 00:37:14.36\00:37:19.00 keyboard. It doesn't matter. You can be a friend to even 00:37:19.00\00:37:25.64 strangers. [ Chuckles ] Look at, come on. The Bible is clear. 00:37:25.64\00:37:28.28 Proverbs 18:24. "A man must show himself friendly." 00:37:28.28\00:37:30.98 And by the way, that's true of a woman. A woman must show herself 00:37:30.98\00:37:34.25 friendly. That's all you have to do. You don't have to be a 00:37:34.25\00:37:37.22 superstar. You don't have to be the most popular kid on the 00:37:37.22\00:37:40.36 campus. You don't have to be the most friendly guy in the office. 00:37:40.36\00:37:45.53 You just be you. That's all He needs 'cause that's all Jesus was. He was just Jesus. 00:37:45.53\00:37:52.27 But it worked every time. Except for the times it didn't work. 00:37:52.27\00:37:59.17 Not everybody's going to love you. Not everybody's going to 00:37:59.17\00:38:03.21 high-five you. That's okay. I just finished the 00:38:03.21\00:38:08.52 autobiography of Malcolm X on MLK Day this week. I started it 00:38:08.52\00:38:15.32 just before Christmas and finished it. And everybody here knows Malcolm X, the most 00:38:15.32\00:38:19.79 well-known Black activist in the 20th century, perhaps. Eventually becoming a global 00:38:19.79\00:38:23.80 ambassador for Islam. So imagine my surprise as I'm reading this 00:38:23.80\00:38:28.14 -- and I shared this was some of you the other day -- imagine my surprise when reading this I 00:38:28.14\00:38:33.01 discover that Malcolm X met Seventh-Day Adventists. Come on, I got to share this 00:38:33.01\00:38:38.45 with you. This is straight out of his autobiography. 00:38:38.45\00:38:41.52 As told to Alex Haley, the great writer. "About this time, my 00:38:41.52\00:38:45.75 mother began to be visited by some Seventh-Day Adventists" -- kind of misspelled it, but Haley 00:38:45.75\00:38:50.86 got it right anyway -- "who had moved into a house" -- by the side of the road, by the way -- 00:38:50.86\00:38:55.83 "who had moved into a house not too far down the road from us. They would talk to Mom for hours 00:38:55.83\00:39:01.67 at a time and leave booklets and leaflets and magazines for her 00:39:01.67\00:39:05.31 to read." Yep. They got to be Adventists. "We began to go with my mother to the Adventist 00:39:05.31\00:39:09.94 meetings that were held further out in the country." This is 00:39:09.94\00:39:13.38 Lansing, Michigan. So this is a little outside Lansing, Michigan. That's where this is 00:39:13.38\00:39:17.45 happening. So he's going with his mom. "For us children, I know that the major attraction 00:39:17.45\00:39:21.99 was the good food they served." Let's hear it for Adventist 00:39:21.99\00:39:25.39 potlucks. Give me an amen for that. Come on. That's the one -- That's a big loss about 00:39:25.39\00:39:29.40 the pandemic, no potlucks. What is the deal with that? Who -- [ 00:39:29.40\00:39:36.14 Sighs ] They'll come back. They'll come back. So, "I know 00:39:36.14\00:39:40.38 that the major attraction was the good food they served." Keep 00:39:40.38\00:39:43.01 reading. "But we listened." That's the deal. You do the potlucks because you 00:39:43.01\00:39:46.11 want to serve those who are there, but they're listening while they're there, and 00:39:46.11\00:39:49.72 Malcolm X is very honest. He said, "We were listening to what 00:39:49.72\00:39:53.32 they were saying." "There were a handful of Negroes from small towns in the area, but I would 00:39:53.32\00:39:58.79 say" that little church "was about 99% white people." You got 00:39:58.79\00:40:03.10 the picture. End quote. Malcolm X. Amazing. 00:40:10.74\00:40:20.42 When you're friendly to a 12-year-old, you have no idea what the 12-year-old will 00:40:20.42\00:40:24.69 turn out to be. But you're still friendly to a 12-year-old 00:40:24.69\00:40:28.76 because you don't care what she turns out to be. She's a 12-year-old and you love her. 00:40:28.76\00:40:35.93 God bless that little church outside Lansing, Michigan. "They were the friendliest white 00:40:35.93\00:40:42.30 people I'd ever seen." "Let me live by the side of the road, my 00:40:42.30\00:40:48.18 house. Let me live and be a friend to man." Befriend or be a 00:40:48.18\00:40:52.45 friend to strangers. That's what Jesus did. All right, three 00:40:52.45\00:40:55.45 simple rules. Here are strategies. Here comes strategy number two. Take the initiative. 00:40:55.45\00:40:58.72 Hey, let me tell you something about this. If Jesus had not 00:40:58.72\00:41:01.86 taken the initiative with the woman at the well as he did last Sabbath when we were together, 00:41:01.86\00:41:05.59 she wouldn't have been saved. If he was waiting for her, she would never have opened 00:41:05.59\00:41:09.66 the door. He took the initiative. He took the 00:41:09.66\00:41:12.87 initiative with Zacchaeus. He took the initiative with 00:41:12.87\00:41:15.27 Bartimaeus. He's taking the initiative with you and me. Why? 00:41:15.27\00:41:17.64 Because that was his strategy. That little classic, "Ministry 00:41:17.64\00:41:21.11 of Healing." Let me share this with you. This is incredible. This is Christ's modus operandi. 00:41:21.11\00:41:24.95 You want to know how Jesus operated with a house by the 00:41:24.95\00:41:28.48 side of the road? This is it. This is it. "Christ's method alone will give true success in 00:41:28.48\00:41:32.85 reaching the people. Number one, the Savior mingled with men" -- 00:41:32.85\00:41:36.59 and women -- "as one who desired their good." Now, here's the key 00:41:36.59\00:41:40.23 word. Watch this. This is kind of magic. Whoa! That red circle 00:41:40.23\00:41:43.63 goes around the word "mingled." You know why? Because that's the 00:41:43.63\00:41:46.80 key. That's the key. He just mingled with them. "I'm just 00:41:46.80\00:41:50.21 here. What are you talking about? Let me be a part of that. Latest football scores? 00:41:50.21\00:41:54.48 Okay, come on, I can do that." He mingled, "he mingled with men as one who desired their good." 00:41:54.48\00:42:02.68 He wasn't just hanging around. They knew there's something good 00:42:02.68\00:42:06.49 about this guy. He wants the best for me. I don't know. He 00:42:06.49\00:42:10.89 just was Jesus. Just like you are you. But people pick up on it. "The Savior mingled with men 00:42:10.89\00:42:17.23 as one who desired their good. Number two, he showed sympathy 00:42:17.23\00:42:21.44 for them." "Wow, that happened to you? I am so sad. I'm sure that guy didn't know 00:42:21.44\00:42:26.14 what he was doing, but if he did, I apologize to you. That is 00:42:26.14\00:42:31.08 bad how you were treated." He sympathized for them. He showed his sympathy for them. 00:42:31.08\00:42:36.48 "Number three, he ministered to their needs." Find a need and 00:42:36.48\00:42:39.35 fill it. That will often open a door for you. You find a need 00:42:39.35\00:42:42.19 that that person has, and you fill that need and that opens the door. It often opens a door. 00:42:42.19\00:42:45.23 "Number four, he won their confidence." "You can trust me. 00:42:45.23\00:42:48.26 I'm on your side." And then, number five, he says, "Yo, come 00:42:48.26\00:42:52.03 on. Let's go. Follow me down the road with a house by the side of the road. Let's go." 00:42:52.03\00:42:58.77 I tell you what. If you're living in 2021, and you are, 00:42:58.77\00:43:03.08 whether you're a student, a faculty member, a community member, just a human being, one 00:43:03.08\00:43:10.02 of the great gifts that social media has given to you and me is it's the perfect place to mingle 00:43:10.02\00:43:16.42 with people. You can mingle with people. You don't have to know them. They know you. 00:43:16.42\00:43:20.40 They've gone by your -- They've commented on your picture. 00:43:20.40\00:43:23.70 "That post, ooh, yeah. I'm commenting." You know, what? 00:43:23.70\00:43:26.77 Why don't we turn the tables? You're always waiting for people to comment on your stuff. 00:43:26.77\00:43:30.87 Why don't you go ahead and comment on somebody else's? Maybe it's not just to have the 00:43:30.87\00:43:34.88 coolest everything out there so that you can just drive the 00:43:34.88\00:43:38.18 numbers up. That's not the point. You're hanging around people like Jesus did. 00:43:38.18\00:43:41.28 Your house is beside the road. Comment on that stranger's post. "Boy, that was provocative. 00:43:41.28\00:43:45.92 You know what, I agree with you. I never saw it that way before." Extend a compliment. 00:43:45.92\00:43:52.16 Don't lie. But mingle. Those of us living in this world 00:43:52.16\00:43:57.80 of social media now have been given this huge traffic 00:43:57.80\00:44:01.34 opportunity. There are people everywhere. Do just like Jesus did. Just mingle among them. 00:44:01.34\00:44:06.88 I think of you faculty who have electronic contacts with your colleagues nearly all over 00:44:06.88\00:44:13.15 the world. And some of the you know some very well-known other 00:44:13.15\00:44:18.02 faculty members -- researchers, writers, scientists, you know them. Those of you who are 00:44:18.02\00:44:28.00 faculty, if I might have your ear for a moment, you have a reputation, these people have a 00:44:28.00\00:44:32.43 reputation, but have you ever -- have you ever considered connecting with one of them? 00:44:32.43\00:44:36.30 You know, you say, "Man, I'm not going to write to that guy. Who 00:44:36.30\00:44:40.81 am I? No." What do you mean? All it takes is somebody to just get 00:44:40.81\00:44:45.01 behind a keyboard and just... "Hey, I really appreciate it. I've been using your book 00:44:45.01\00:44:48.88 in my class. This was insightful." The issue is not, 00:44:48.88\00:44:53.96 "Well, will he write back and compliment me back?" No, the issue is just making a 00:44:53.96\00:44:57.33 connect. You live in a house by the side of the road. 00:44:57.33\00:45:00.23 Just connect with him. I mean, why couldn't it happen for you like it happened with 00:45:00.23\00:45:08.44 C.S. Lewis, the great C.S. Lewis, Clive Staples Lewis? One day an American woman, 00:45:08.44\00:45:14.68 living in -- true story -- living in Illinois, has a 00:45:14.68\00:45:18.58 question. So this brilliant mind, she decides, "I'm going to write him a letter." 00:45:18.58\00:45:22.68 There was no social media back there, so she had to just do 00:45:22.68\00:45:26.99 this like this. She writes him a letter. She sends it to him. It 00:45:26.99\00:45:30.63 crosses the pond. He eventually looks, read his mail. He said, "I'm gonna let this 00:45:30.63\00:45:34.46 lady know this." He answers her. She sends another letter 00:45:34.46\00:45:38.17 sometime later. He sends an answer back. They never met, but 00:45:38.17\00:45:43.27 they carried on a conversation over the Atlantic. An unknown 00:45:43.27\00:45:50.45 American woman living in the state of Illinois is corresponding with the great 00:45:50.45\00:45:55.18 C.S. Lewis. Yep. Yep. Yep. Because all it took was she took 00:45:55.18\00:46:00.89 the initiative. She just said, "Hey, I really need to ask you 00:46:00.89\00:46:05.26 this." Why not? Faculty, you have contacts. You're selling yourself short if you're 00:46:05.26\00:46:10.37 thinking, "I don't have influence." You have incredible influence. And that woman didn't 00:46:10.37\00:46:14.60 have a shred of influence, but there was a response, and then, there's a response, and there's 00:46:14.60\00:46:18.51 a response. With your bright mind and your sensitive heart, 00:46:18.51\00:46:24.31 who better to make contact with that individual that the Spirit brings to your attention. 00:46:24.31\00:46:29.08 Ah. "Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a 00:46:29.08\00:46:33.02 friend to man." Three simple strategies. Here's the last one. 00:46:33.02\00:46:36.02 Befriend or be a friend to strangers. Take the initiative. 00:46:36.02\00:46:39.73 I got it. Finally, share your "capital F" Friend. Why? Because the Maker of all things 00:46:39.73\00:46:45.73 loves and wants me. And if the Maker of all things loves and wants you, don't you 00:46:45.73\00:46:50.21 suppose Jesus loves and wants the people that you have connections with, that you have 00:46:50.21\00:46:54.91 relationships with? 00:46:54.91\00:46:56.48 He wants them, but he wants them through you. 00:46:56.51\00:47:00.82 Why not? Share your "capital F" Friend. 00:47:00.82\00:47:07.26 The day will come. I'm not just saying write every 00:47:07.26\00:47:10.73 famous person you can think of now. 00:47:10.73\00:47:12.73 "Dear President Biden." No. 00:47:12.73\00:47:15.70 I tell you what, I wish somebody would write that young lady who 00:47:15.70\00:47:18.70 read the poem. "Hey, I'm a student at 00:47:18.70\00:47:21.24 Andrews University, and I just want you to know that was 00:47:21.24\00:47:24.07 masterful. You go, girl." 00:47:24.07\00:47:27.18 You can find her. She's got a publisher. 00:47:27.18\00:47:30.65 The publisher has an e-mail address. You write to the 00:47:30.68\00:47:34.35 publisher. The publisher will send it on. Wow. Why? Because the Maker of all things 00:47:34.35\00:47:38.15 loves and wants me, and the day will come when the Spirit whispers in my eye -- my ear, 00:47:38.15\00:47:42.39 and the Spirit says, "Dwight, this would be the time now, pass 00:47:42.39\00:47:46.09 this along." "You know what? I've discovered something in this life that has changed my 00:47:46.09\00:47:49.60 life. It's so simple. I'm embarrassed to share it with 00:47:49.60\00:47:52.33 you, but can I pass it on? The Maker of all things loves and 00:47:52.33\00:47:56.40 wants me." Why not? You don't have to trumpet it. "Hey, I just 00:47:56.40\00:48:02.38 wrote so-and-so." "Come on, keep it to yourself." You never know what'll happen. Because this 00:48:02.38\00:48:10.09 little lady in Illinois, let me tell you the rest of the story here. They took all those 00:48:10.09\00:48:15.49 letters. After Lewis died and after she died, her estate took the letters, got permission, and 00:48:15.49\00:48:20.20 they've published them in a book called "Letters to an American 00:48:20.20\00:48:24.17 Lady." I read that book. I could not believe my eyes when I discovered that this woman had 00:48:24.17\00:48:30.11 met some Seventh-Day Adventists. All right, follow this. She met 00:48:30.11\00:48:34.44 some Seventh-Day Adventist, and I praise God it was a very positive experience. We don't 00:48:34.44\00:48:37.81 know. We don't have her letters. We just have what she -- We just have how Lewis responds. 00:48:37.81\00:48:41.78 She's met an Adventist, and she's asked him, "Do you know anything about these 00:48:41.78\00:48:45.62 Adventists?" Watch this. On October 26, 1962, one year 00:48:45.62\00:48:49.99 before he died, from Cambridge, Magdalene College, this brilliant Englishman and 00:48:49.99\00:48:56.70 world-renowned apologist for Christianity wrote back to Mary -- 'cause her name is Mary. 00:48:56.70\00:49:04.11 She writes, and he writes back. I'll put the clip from that 00:49:04.11\00:49:09.31 letter right here. "Dear Mary..." And then, dot, dot, dot, dot. So I'm leaving that 00:49:09.31\00:49:13.42 part of the letter out. "What you say about VII Day Adventists" -- I like 00:49:13.42\00:49:18.25 that, "VII Day." We're not Adventists just one day a week. 00:49:18.25\00:49:22.59 Seven-Day Adventists. Take it from an Englishman. Not bad. 00:49:22.59\00:49:28.00 They got to be a first-name basis. Ain't that something? 00:49:42.11\00:49:46.51 "Hey, tell me about these Adventists. What do you know?" 00:49:46.51\00:49:49.48 "I don't know, but if what you just told me, if they have that kind of love, if they have 00:49:49.48\00:49:55.46 so much charity, there must be something very right about 00:49:55.46\00:50:02.66 them." So much love. Somewhere, I remember reading a sentence that goes like this. 00:50:02.66\00:50:07.80 The last rays of merciful light. I'll put it on screen for you. 00:50:07.80\00:50:13.71 That simple. You thought you had to preach a sermon about God's 00:50:27.82\00:50:30.93 love. You do not. All you have to do is build your house by the 00:50:30.93\00:50:37.80 side of the road and be a friend to man. For Jesus. For Jesus. 00:50:37.80\00:50:45.87 To which I say amen. And amen. Yeah. 00:50:45.87\00:50:51.68 Take out your Connect Card right now. I'll put it on the screen 00:50:51.68\00:50:54.72 for you. You can do it in your -- You can do it with your 00:50:54.72\00:50:57.49 device there. pmchurch.org/connect. Once you 00:50:57.49\00:51:02.96 get to that page, you'll see my next step today is, "How can I act on this, Dwight? 00:51:02.96\00:51:07.00 Well, what about this?" 00:51:07.00\00:51:08.56 Me, too, I'm putting a check mark right there. Why not? I 00:51:13.40\00:51:18.01 want to be that. Box number 2... 00:51:18.01\00:51:19.67 You're not saying you're going to do it tomorrow, but you know 00:51:23.71\00:51:26.82 what? Make a deal with your own heart and the Holy Spirit. "You point out somebody to me, 00:51:26.82\00:51:30.69 Spirit. I'll hear you. And help me then connect." 00:51:30.69\00:51:36.29 Why not? You got nothing to lose. And somebody might have 00:51:36.29\00:51:41.93 eternity to gain. Because you were a friend by the side of the 00:51:41.93\00:51:47.30 road. Box number three... 00:51:47.30\00:51:48.74 Every time we put this up, somebody else says, "Hey, me, 00:51:53.21\00:51:57.25 too." So I keep putting it up. Because some of you never been baptized in your life, and I 00:51:57.25\00:52:02.52 don't know why, and it doesn't matter to me at all. It's not 00:52:02.52\00:52:07.22 the externals that count. Jesus loves you. He knows your heart. 00:52:07.22\00:52:09.96 And right now, the Holy Spirit is saying, "It's your turn. Guess what, this is your day." 00:52:09.96\00:52:14.86 Put a check mark there. They'll get in touch with you electronically, and that's what 00:52:14.86\00:52:19.60 we'll do. Why put it off? Had a young man come to me 00:52:19.60\00:52:23.20 after chapel. He said, "I was in church last Sabbath. 00:52:23.20\00:52:27.01 I want to be baptized." You go. "Can you help me with Bible 00:52:27.01\00:52:33.31 studies?" We got it. We got it. Why not? 00:52:33.31\00:52:38.35 So, if something's happening in your heart right now, keep the 00:52:38.35\00:52:41.82 door open. Don't slam the door. Keep the door open. Keep the door open to Jesus. 00:52:41.82\00:52:47.10 Put a check mark there. Make sure we have your e-mail address, and we'll be back in 00:52:47.10\00:52:51.30 touch with you electronically. Oh, oh, oh, oh. Go back. Box 00:52:51.30\00:52:56.37 number four... What you don't know is that what we've been sharing these last few Sabbaths, 00:52:59.27\00:53:03.18 all the fill in the blanks are coming from "Desire of Ages." I don't quote it every time. 00:53:03.18\00:53:07.55 That book has changed my life over and over and over again. You want an e-version that you 00:53:07.55\00:53:12.92 can have on your device, please send your e-mail address to us. We'll send it to you. 00:53:12.92\00:53:18.06 Let's pray. The singers are going to sing a beautiful song, 00:53:18.06\00:53:21.30 by the way. "Make Me a Servant." I just love that, Vivian. "Make 00:53:21.30\00:53:25.30 Me a Servant." That's what it means to have a house by the side of the road. Jesus, I'm 00:53:25.30\00:53:30.54 your servant. And we'll sing in our hearts with them. Oh, Jesus, why did you make it 00:53:30.54\00:53:35.24 so simple? No, no. The question is, why have we made it so 00:53:35.24\00:53:39.68 complicated and so hard? As the Father sent me, I'm sending you. 00:53:39.68\00:53:45.22 Tell them the Maker of all things loves and wants you. Build a house by the side 00:53:45.22\00:53:49.59 of the road, you can do it. This is nothing. You can do it. I 00:53:49.59\00:53:53.80 did. Oh, Jesus, know our hearts and know that we would want nothing more, to build that 00:53:53.80\00:54:01.74 house right beside yours by the side of that crowded road. In your name, we pray. 00:54:01.74\00:54:10.71 Amen.
