¤¤ 00:00:00.60\00:00:06.84 >> Happy Sabbath. Welcome to 00:00:16.01\00:00:17.98 Pioneer Memorial Church on this faculty dedication, returning to 00:00:17.98\00:00:22.75 the school year Sabbath, and I'd like to ask you all to stand and 00:00:22.75\00:00:27.62 join me in a word of prayer. Our Heavenly Father, 00:00:27.62\00:00:37.63 we thank You for the opportunity to take a break, to take a 00:00:37.63\00:00:41.30 Sabbath, to think on You, to worship You, to praise You, and 00:00:41.30\00:00:45.01 we thank You for hearing our praises, and we just ask that 00:00:45.01\00:00:48.61 You give us that gift today of opening our hearts and our minds 00:00:48.61\00:00:52.51 to You, that we may both be filled with Your messages and 00:00:52.51\00:00:56.05 that You may be pleased with what You hear from our hearts. 00:00:56.05\00:00:59.72 In Your name we pray, Amen. >> Amen. 00:00:59.72\00:01:04.73 >> Stay standing. 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.23 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:01:07.30\00:01:24.85 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:01:24.85\00:01:42.30 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:01:42.30\00:01:59.75 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:01:59.75\00:02:17.27 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:02:17.27\00:02:34.75 ¤¤ Lift your praises to God. 00:02:34.75\00:02:47.40 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:02:47.50\00:03:03.68 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:03:03.68\00:03:19.76 ¤¤ You may be seated, and, you 00:03:19.76\00:03:29.64 know, I was just thinking about, as we start this new year, that 00:03:29.64\00:03:33.84 we're all coming from different places, we're coming from a 00:03:33.84\00:03:37.78 break, for some of us, and some of us are coming from very 00:03:37.78\00:03:41.68 joyous experiences, and others are coming from periods of 00:03:41.68\00:03:45.49 sorrow, and there's only one truth that we can really take 00:03:45.49\00:03:49.36 from all of these situations, is that we need to have our focus 00:03:49.36\00:03:53.53 in the right place. It seems to be the easiest 00:03:53.53\00:03:56.46 thing, at least in my life -- It's the easiest thing and the 00:03:56.46\00:03:59.93 hardest thing, to keep your focus in the right place, and 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.34 that is on your creator. It's so easy to give over to the 00:04:03.34\00:04:06.68 world's way and say, "I'll solve it. 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.94 Let me be the one to solve it." But today, I ask you to open 00:04:08.94\00:04:12.81 your hearts in prayer to God with this hymn that He will be 00:04:12.81\00:04:17.05 your vision. The fact of the matter is, we're 00:22:35.12\00:22:39.02 in a war, and I'm telling you something, this battle is 00:22:39.02\00:22:42.19 intensifying. I read two books this summer. 00:22:42.19\00:22:45.29 I am so intimidated by those two books, that I'm gonna share them 00:22:45.29\00:22:50.03 with you, hoping you'll feel intimidated, as well. 00:22:50.03\00:22:55.07 Book number one, put it on the screen, Sarah Weise. 00:22:55.07\00:22:57.37 She is a marketer. No relation to the library 00:23:13.39\00:23:16.99 on the campus of Andrews University. 00:23:16.99\00:23:18.96 All right? Really, the word "intimidated" 00:23:18.96\00:23:25.67 is past-tense. I'm bucked up now, and you will 00:23:25.67\00:23:28.90 be, too. But what I want to do is I want 00:23:28.90\00:23:31.67 to go to these two writers who have described Generation Z, and 00:23:31.67\00:23:35.68 out of hundreds, really, of factoids, I want to gather a few 00:23:35.68\00:23:39.55 statistics. I'm gonna run them by you. 00:23:39.55\00:23:42.15 No study guide to fill them out. You're not gonna jot numbers 00:23:42.15\00:23:44.59 down. We're not even gonna put them on 00:23:44.59\00:23:46.35 the screen. You're gonna have an impression, 00:23:50.33\00:23:52.99 I promise, by the time this is through, okay? 00:23:52.99\00:23:55.16 So let's start with Sarah Weise. She's the secular marketer. 00:23:55.16\00:23:58.97 She opens up by reminding us Generation Z is born between 00:23:58.97\00:24:04.14 1995 and 2006. In other words, their ages right 00:24:04.14\00:24:08.44 now are 13 to 24. So 13 -- that's Andrews Academy, 00:24:08.44\00:24:12.41 okay? Then we get to undergrads, 00:24:12.41\00:24:14.85 then we get to graduate and seminary. 00:24:14.85\00:24:17.55 13 to 24. Do you know this? 00:24:17.55\00:24:21.76 51% of this planet today is under the age of 25. 00:24:21.76\00:24:28.23 >> Hmm! >> Over half! 00:24:28.23\00:24:31.47 Gen Z. That's what they're calling 00:24:31.47\00:24:32.93 them. They grew up with high-speed 00:24:32.93\00:24:37.11 Internet in their homes, 98% of them have smartphones. 00:24:37.11\00:24:41.38 Go figure. You knew that, didn't you? 00:24:41.38\00:24:45.25 85% of Gen Zs find out about new products through social media. 00:24:45.25\00:24:49.12 Gen Zs practice what's called "Quick Flex." 00:24:49.12\00:24:51.89 They use to say of Gen X-ers, "multitasking." 00:24:51.89\00:24:54.79 These guys don't multitask, they "quick flex." 00:24:54.79\00:24:57.73 They can take five screens on their phone and simultaneously 00:24:57.73\00:25:02.30 monitor all five -- a reddit thread, Instagram, a YouTube 00:25:02.30\00:25:06.67 video... Five of them. 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.70 Their attention span is 8 seconds. 00:25:08.70\00:25:11.41 [ Laughter ] Goldfish have an attention span 00:25:11.41\00:25:15.08 of 9 seconds. [ Laughter continues ] 00:25:15.08\00:25:17.61 Millennials have an attention span of 12 seconds, but 00:25:17.61\00:25:20.72 millennials could only operate four screens at a time. 00:25:20.72\00:25:23.85 I'm telling you, the technology is driving the human race. 00:25:23.85\00:25:30.76 Most spend 3 hours a night on YouTube. 00:25:30.76\00:25:33.29 Their big deal is DIY. How many here know what "DIY" 00:25:33.29\00:25:38.20 stands for? You have to be a Gen Z to know. 00:25:38.20\00:25:41.34 [ Laughter ] Yeah, "Do It Yourself." 00:25:41.34\00:25:43.84 That's their choice of learning. DIY -- big deal. 00:25:43.84\00:25:48.28 The average 13- to 24-year-old today checks social media -- get 00:25:48.28\00:25:54.12 this -- 100 times a day. 100 times a day. 00:25:54.12\00:25:58.35 In the middle of your class. Lots of times in your class. 00:25:58.35\00:26:02.22 [ Laughter ] Right? 00:26:02.22\00:26:04.53 I'm gonna put Sarah Weise on the screen. 00:26:04.53\00:26:06.76 You need to let some of this sink in visually into your soul. 00:26:06.76\00:26:09.93 Sarah Weise's writing, "It is terrifying..." 00:26:09.93\00:26:14.17 "Just too much! I don't want it." 00:26:58.05\00:27:02.08 They are categorically sleep-deprived, especially among 00:27:02.08\00:27:04.92 females. Gen Z and brand loyalty. 00:27:04.92\00:27:09.49 Oh, please listen to this one very carefully. 00:27:09.49\00:27:11.79 "When they commit, it is for these reasons." 00:27:11.79\00:27:14.10 Okay, why would they commit to Andrews University? 00:27:14.10\00:27:16.63 It would be for these reasons. Number one, 00:27:16.63\00:27:19.00 superior customer experience. Number 2, brand aligns with the 00:27:19.00\00:27:25.07 consumer's personal values. "I like that school because I 00:27:25.07\00:27:28.04 have the same values." Number three, speed. 00:27:28.04\00:27:32.85 Faster checkout and delivery and registration. 00:27:32.85\00:27:36.25 I just added "and registration," but you got the point. 00:27:36.25\00:27:39.82 All right. Number 4, family or friend 00:27:39.82\00:27:42.29 recommendation. I had a dad with his Gen Z 00:27:42.29\00:27:44.46 sitting in my office this week. He said, "I wanted all four of 00:27:44.46\00:27:47.10 my kids to come here. Three of them went elsewhere, 00:27:47.10\00:27:49.26 I've finally taken the baby, and I'm bringing him here." 00:27:49.26\00:27:51.67 This boy is here because his dad is recommending, "You come to 00:27:51.67\00:27:56.27 Andrews University." And, by the way, they're very 00:27:56.27\00:27:59.27 open to their parents' recommendations when it comes to 00:27:59.27\00:28:01.94 finances. They're very open. 00:28:01.94\00:28:05.05 Physical health -- Uh-oh. The first generation to have a 00:28:05.05\00:28:08.28 shorter life expectancy than their parents due to 00:28:08.28\00:28:11.15 unprecedented childhood obesity. This generation is nearly twice 00:28:11.15\00:28:14.52 as likely -- speaking of mental health -- than millennials and 00:28:14.52\00:28:17.59 Gen X-ers to report mental health as either "Fair" or 00:28:17.59\00:28:20.23 "Poor." More likely to report having 00:28:20.23\00:28:22.13 received treatment or therapy from a mental health 00:28:22.13\00:28:24.67 professional. Today, Generation Z reports 00:28:24.67\00:28:27.24 higher levels of loneliness and social isolation that 00:28:27.24\00:28:30.74 72-year-olds in this nation. >> Oh, my... 00:28:30.74\00:28:33.88 >> More isolation and loneliness. 00:28:33.88\00:28:36.48 Wow. Gen Z learns at home, we just 00:28:36.48\00:28:39.25 discovered. Oh, no, no. 00:28:39.25\00:28:40.58 I need you -- I got to run this one by you. 00:28:40.58\00:28:43.49 The number of teens who get together with friends on a daily 00:28:43.49\00:28:47.29 basis dropped by more than 40% from 2000 to 2015. 00:28:47.29\00:28:50.53 They're not connecting anymore. Gen Z learns at home through 00:28:50.53\00:28:54.73 videos, but, at school -- Listen, teacher. 00:28:54.73\00:28:56.60 At school, they long for something different. 00:28:56.60\00:28:59.47 In-person activities -- this is the marketer speaking -- with 00:28:59.47\00:29:03.24 classmates and teachers, real connection. 00:29:03.24\00:29:05.87 6 in 10 Gen Z-ers cite in-person team-based activities as their 00:29:05.87\00:29:09.71 preferred learning method. "I can go at home and study 00:29:09.71\00:29:12.61 alone, I can DIY at home, but when I come to your class, I 00:29:12.61\00:29:15.25 want to be with somebody because I don't have people." 00:29:15.25\00:29:18.52 Mm. Second, our market's writing 00:29:18.52\00:29:22.89 monthly church attendance has dropped over 20% since 1970, 00:29:22.89\00:29:25.59 ditto for less times with friends from work. 00:29:25.59\00:29:27.76 They've gone from 2 1/2 hours a week with their friends to under 00:29:27.76\00:29:30.67 1 hour a week now with their friends. 00:29:30.67\00:29:32.53 And she writes, Sarah Weise, "Imagine a student being unhappy 00:29:32.53\00:29:36.14 at school and having no other community to turn to. 00:29:36.14\00:29:39.24 For many, that is a reality." They go home, nothing. 00:29:39.24\00:29:45.65 Generation Z, they're coming in nanoseconds to us at 00:29:45.65\00:29:50.15 Andrews University. Our president, Andrea Luxton, in 00:29:50.15\00:29:54.29 her annual State of the University address 00:29:54.29\00:29:57.56 this last week reminded us that when we're clear on the "why" 00:29:57.56\00:30:02.00 for our existence, then we better understand the "who" we 00:30:02.00\00:30:06.23 need to become to deliver the "why." 00:30:06.23\00:30:09.10 And the "why" for Andrews University's existence 00:30:09.10\00:30:11.87 is absolutely clear. It's pasted everywhere on this 00:30:11.87\00:30:14.81 campus. Put it on the screen, please. 00:30:14.81\00:30:17.01 "World Changers Made Here." We believe that world-changers 00:30:17.01\00:30:20.48 are made. In other words, we connect this 00:30:20.48\00:30:22.48 generation to Christ, and then we send this generation out into 00:30:22.48\00:30:25.35 the world for Christ. "World Changes Made Here." 00:30:25.35\00:30:31.39 But do you know who we're supposed to be turning into 00:30:31.39\00:30:34.10 world-changers? The people we just described. 00:30:34.10\00:30:37.00 These Gen Z-ers, your mission, should you choose to accept it. 00:30:37.00\00:30:44.67 Wow. Let me take the same factoids 00:30:44.67\00:30:48.88 now and watch another writer, a Christian, slant the statistics. 00:30:48.88\00:30:53.95 Watch what he does with it. James Emery White. 00:30:53.95\00:30:58.29 Radically different slant. Put it on the screen, please. 00:30:58.29\00:31:00.22 His words... 00:31:00.22\00:31:02.16 "The most influential generation in the West." 00:31:13.84\00:31:18.04 They're coming to us. The first generation, by the 00:31:18.04\00:31:23.81 way, raised in a post-Christian context. 00:31:23.81\00:31:25.78 Most of them still believe in the existence of God -- 78% of 00:31:25.78\00:31:28.55 them. But listen to this -- 00:31:28.55\00:31:29.95 Less than half of them attend weekly religious services of any 00:31:29.95\00:31:32.69 kind, and only 8% would cite a religious leader as a role 00:31:32.69\00:31:35.22 model. George Barna makes his point 00:31:35.22\00:31:38.23 well. The younger the generation, the 00:31:38.23\00:31:41.06 more post-Christian it is. What's the next generation? 00:31:41.06\00:31:44.20 These little kiddies that were up here. 00:31:44.20\00:31:45.93 If time should last, what are they gonna be, Double A? 00:31:45.93\00:31:48.20 We've run out of letters. [ Laughter ] 00:31:48.20\00:31:52.67 The younger the generation, the more post-Christian they become. 00:31:52.67\00:31:57.48 Wow. Oh, boy. 00:31:57.48\00:32:00.48 Currently, teenagers spend nearly 9 hours a day absorbing 00:32:00.48\00:32:05.39 media in all its forms. 9 hours a day. 00:32:05.39\00:32:08.86 Leading Fedler, put him on the screen, please. 00:32:08.86\00:32:12.06 The author of the mass-media textbook, "Standard." 00:32:12.06\00:32:15.43 Fedler writing... 00:32:15.43\00:32:17.37 And you thought it was you and me. 00:32:22.50\00:32:24.57 Nope! There is a technology out there 00:32:24.57\00:32:28.11 now that is taking over the education of an entire 00:32:28.11\00:32:31.51 generation. Oh, boy. 00:32:31.51\00:32:34.02 Keep reading, on the screen. 00:32:34.02\00:32:36.05 Here's a key point. 00:32:49.90\00:32:52.83 "If I accept it, then I affirm it. 00:32:56.57\00:32:58.71 "If I accept it, then I affirm it." 00:32:58.71\00:33:03.08 Hmm. The media. On the screen, Eric Schmidt, 00:33:03.08\00:33:07.92 Jared Cohen, in their book, "The New Digital Age." 00:33:07.92\00:33:11.59 Oh, this is unbelievable. 00:33:11.59\00:33:13.52 Just leave that on the screen for a moment. 00:33:26.07\00:33:29.14 Anarchy. There are no rules out there. 00:33:29.14\00:33:31.37 There's nobody controlling that space. 00:33:31.37\00:33:33.24 It's just there. The largest experiment in 00:33:33.24\00:33:36.34 anarchy in the history of the human race. 00:33:36.34\00:33:39.38 He's got to be right. No other generation has had 00:33:39.38\00:33:43.65 pornography so available in such extremes at such a young age. 00:33:43.65\00:33:47.49 Think about that now. 70% of all 18- to 34-year-olds 00:33:47.49\00:33:52.06 are regular viewers of pornography. 00:33:52.06\00:33:54.93 White calls it "the wallpaper of our lives." 00:33:54.93\00:33:58.33 There is a porn site that has over 15.35 billion visits, 00:33:58.33\00:34:02.80 twice the population of Earth! Generation Z, as he puts it, 00:34:02.80\00:34:11.45 lives in a pornified world. Yeah. 00:34:11.45\00:34:17.02 We're in a war, and the battle is intensifying. 00:34:17.02\00:34:23.02 The more teens are exposed to sexual content in movies, the 00:34:23.02\00:34:26.56 earlier they started having sex, and the likelier they were to 00:34:26.56\00:34:30.23 have casual, unprotected sex. One last quotation. 00:34:30.23\00:34:33.27 Denny Burk, on the screen. 00:34:33.27\00:34:35.20 I had a little girl, a co-ed see me on the last Sabbath of the 00:34:43.48\00:34:46.38 school year, just a few weeks ago, and she said to me, 00:34:46.38\00:34:48.95 "Pastor, you have to this new year. 00:34:48.95\00:34:50.75 You have to deal with pornography. 00:34:50.75\00:34:52.75 It is pervasive. Boys and girls. 00:34:52.75\00:34:55.62 You cannot leave that out." So we're gonna have a little 00:34:55.62\00:34:59.53 DIY -- Do It Yourself -- on pornography this fall. 00:34:59.53\00:35:03.60 We have a few of those little DIYs wrapped in. 00:35:03.60\00:35:08.17 Keep reading. 00:35:08.17\00:35:10.44 End quote. When I put those two books down 00:35:25.09\00:35:28.39 at the end of the summer, I said to myself, "My Lord... 00:35:28.39\00:35:32.16 My Lord, we are in a war." And by the nanosecond, 00:35:32.16\00:35:35.50 this battle is intensifying. We can't just sit here and say, 00:35:35.50\00:35:41.90 "Wow, this is a little rural campus, and we have problems. 00:35:41.90\00:35:45.14 We have filters on our Internet anyway." 00:35:45.14\00:35:47.54 Psht! You got to listen to the kids 00:35:47.54\00:35:50.41 laugh about those filters. >> Yeah. 00:35:50.41\00:35:54.05 >> We're in a war. It's not just about pornography. 00:35:54.05\00:35:56.79 It's about the entire culture of life. 00:35:56.79\00:36:00.62 Gen Z, God bless them. We desperately need -- 00:36:00.62\00:36:05.23 Ladies and gentlemen, we desperately need a generational 00:36:05.23\00:36:08.70 breakthrough. I want you to go to one of the 00:36:08.70\00:36:11.00 short wars recorded in Scripture. 00:36:11.00\00:36:12.57 It's the shortest battle, I should say. 00:36:12.57\00:36:14.27 Open your Bible, please, to First Chronicles, Chapter 14. 00:36:14.27\00:36:16.57 The shortest battle in the Bible. 00:36:16.57\00:36:18.04 Look at this Scripture. See if there's anything for us 00:36:18.04\00:36:21.01 on this day of new beginnings, on the eve. 00:36:21.01\00:36:23.88 1 Chronicles, Chapter 14. 1 Chronicles. 00:36:23.88\00:36:27.08 I'll be in the NIV. You follow along. 00:36:27.08\00:36:30.39 Whatever you have. 1 Chronicles, 00:36:30.39\00:36:32.75 Chapter 14, Verse 8. 00:36:32.75\00:36:34.69 Two leadership lessons tucked away in the opening story line 00:36:46.74\00:36:50.37 of this very short battle. Leadership lesson number one -- 00:36:50.37\00:36:55.34 Yep. The Philistines here -- 00:36:59.48\00:37:01.22 "He's the new king. "He's the new king of Israel! 00:37:01.22\00:37:03.82 We're gunning." We're going for him because 00:37:03.82\00:37:06.96 every enemy knows that if you can take the leader down, you 00:37:06.96\00:37:11.29 have the whole army. Just take the leader down. 00:37:11.29\00:37:15.16 You say, "Oh, Dwight, whew, I'm very glad because I am not a 00:37:15.16\00:37:18.80 leader." I beg to differ with you, sir. 00:37:18.80\00:37:21.34 I happen to subscribe to John Maxwell's definition of 00:37:21.34\00:37:23.57 leadership. Put it on the screen, please. 00:37:23.57\00:37:26.07 If you have influence on this planet, you are a leader. 00:37:30.58\00:37:33.55 If you have influence on this campus, you are a leader. 00:37:33.55\00:37:36.02 I don't care where you work. I don't care what you do. 00:37:36.02\00:37:38.45 If you touch a human life in your play circle, in your work 00:37:38.45\00:37:41.49 circle, in your classroom circle, in your dormitory 00:37:41.49\00:37:44.19 circle, in your family circle, in your neighborhood circle. 00:37:44.19\00:37:47.23 If you have only you and you have influence on you, you are a 00:37:47.23\00:37:50.10 leader. There's no ducking out. 00:37:50.10\00:37:54.94 We're all in this together. And the enemy strategy is... 00:37:54.94\00:37:59.81 Gun for the leader first. [ Exhales sharply ] 00:37:59.81\00:38:09.72 Leadership lesson number one -- if you're the leader, the enemy 00:38:09.72\00:38:11.79 is going for you. Leadership lesson number two -- 00:38:11.79\00:38:14.36 Because that's what leaders do. They don't run. 00:38:16.99\00:38:19.86 They don't wimp out. They're not gonna quit. 00:38:19.86\00:38:21.83 No. You go for the enemy. 00:38:21.83\00:38:23.37 Isn't that what David did? "Hey, they're coming for me? 00:38:23.37\00:38:25.53 I'm going for them." We have to. 00:38:25.53\00:38:28.40 We can't sit here and wring our hands over these statistics and 00:38:28.40\00:38:31.87 say, "Oh, my Lord, isn't this awful?" 00:38:31.87\00:38:38.48 Jared Thurman, in an astounding piece. 00:38:38.48\00:38:40.52 I'm a little surprised that they published it. 00:38:40.52\00:38:42.85 I'm very grateful that they did. My friends at the 00:38:42.85\00:38:45.19 Adventist Review. Jared Thurman, this month, just 00:38:45.19\00:38:48.09 a few days ago, wrote a piece entitled "The Church I Want to 00:38:48.09\00:38:52.23 Belong to is...Terrible." Here are a snatch of words from 00:38:52.23\00:38:57.37 that, on the screen. 00:38:57.37\00:38:59.30 David could have run from the enemy, but he ran to the enemy 00:39:20.56\00:39:24.13 because that's what leaders do. We have to take it on together, 00:39:24.13\00:39:30.10 which means that whatever happens this new year, we will 00:39:30.10\00:39:33.47 take the initiative. We'll take the offensive. 00:39:33.47\00:39:36.30 We'll do it together. We need a generational 00:39:36.30\00:39:39.61 breakthrough. That's the truth. 00:39:39.61\00:39:42.34 "How we gonna get it, Dwight?" Well, just keep reading. 00:39:42.34\00:39:44.25 It's right here. Pick it up in Verse 9. 00:39:44.25\00:39:47.75 Now, what's the mean, "Baal?" We say "bael," but it's Baal. 00:40:19.98\00:40:22.95 It's the Canaanite phrase for -- a Canaanite word, rather -- for 00:40:22.95\00:40:26.15 "Lord" or "master." "Perazim," as in the plural. 00:40:26.15\00:40:28.66 The "iam" is always plural in the Hebrew, and so that means 00:40:28.66\00:40:31.23 breakthroughs. He's the master of 00:40:31.23\00:40:32.83 breakthroughs. He's the Lord of breakthroughs. 00:40:32.83\00:40:37.63 He's the God of breakthroughs. In fact, let's drop the "Baal" 00:40:37.63\00:40:41.60 out because we don't like that word anyway. 00:40:41.60\00:40:43.34 Let's call him Elohim Perazim. 00:40:43.34\00:40:46.04 Let me hear you say "Elohim Perazim." 00:40:50.65\00:40:52.88 Elohim Perazim. It just fits. Let's do it again. 00:40:52.88\00:40:56.35 Elohim Perazim. He's the God of generational 00:40:56.35\00:41:01.56 breakthroughs. James Emery White writes... 00:41:01.56\00:41:07.03 If you're gonna reach out to Gen Z-ers, which we're gonna do 00:41:07.03\00:41:10.23 together, then there are two realities you must immediately 00:41:10.23\00:41:13.37 understand, and here they are. Lookit, he's talking about a 00:41:13.37\00:41:16.34 cross-section now. Understand, there are huge 00:41:16.34\00:41:18.51 exceptions to this, but he says these are two realities you got 00:41:18.51\00:41:21.38 to lock onto. Reality number one, Gen Z-ers 00:41:21.38\00:41:24.08 are lost. Put his words on the screen, 00:41:24.08\00:41:28.02 please. 00:41:28.02\00:41:29.45 End quote. All right? 00:41:37.99\00:41:40.76 Not your children, you understand. 00:41:40.76\00:41:43.90 But a cross-section of this generation. 00:41:43.90\00:41:46.10 Number one, they are lost, and, number two, they are 00:41:46.10\00:41:49.40 leaderless. This about broke my heart when I 00:41:49.40\00:41:51.94 read this. Watch this. 00:41:51.94\00:41:53.31 James Emery White again. 00:41:53.31\00:41:55.24 Now notice... That's where my heart broke. 00:41:59.95\00:42:08.42 I said, "I can't believe it." They have no mentors. 00:42:08.42\00:42:11.96 They have no one who cares. They are so isolated by their 00:42:11.96\00:42:16.50 technology. They are so isolated by the 00:42:16.50\00:42:19.03 medium itself, they have nobody to turn to. 00:42:19.03\00:42:22.54 And they're coming to us in nanoseconds. 00:42:22.54\00:42:27.71 No mentors. Are you serious? Nobody that you can talk to? 00:42:27.71\00:42:32.71 Nobody that will pray with you? Nobody that cares? 00:42:32.71\00:42:35.52 Nobody that will ask, "Hey, how's your mom doing this week?" 00:42:35.52\00:42:39.72 Nobody knows! Oh, they have hundreds, 00:42:39.72\00:42:45.13 thousands of friends in the electronic world, but not a one 00:42:45.13\00:42:48.70 of them cares. [ Sighs ] God bless them. 00:42:48.70\00:42:57.14 "So what can I do, Dwight? Come on, come on, come on. 00:42:57.14\00:42:59.71 Cut to the chase. Is there anything we can do?" 00:42:59.71\00:43:02.08 Let me tell you what I know, okay? 00:43:02.08\00:43:03.75 I'm gonna end with this. This is personal testimony. 00:43:03.75\00:43:07.18 This last school year, I met with a group of Gen Z-er 00:43:07.18\00:43:10.15 university students. Every other week, almost all the 00:43:10.15\00:43:13.12 way through the school year -- almost every other week -- 00:43:13.12\00:43:16.26 and I called them "The Collegiate Council." 00:43:16.26\00:43:18.76 Now, I had to really suck it up to find out if these kids would 00:43:18.76\00:43:21.46 even sit down with this old dude. 00:43:21.46\00:43:23.20 And so I asked them. I was absolutely amazed, 00:43:23.20\00:43:27.84 delightfully, that they said yes. 00:43:27.84\00:43:30.01 Now, a bunch of them said no, but that's the risk you got to 00:43:30.01\00:43:32.34 take if you want to get a yes. You got to be willing to take a 00:43:32.34\00:43:34.74 no. [ Laughter ] 00:43:34.74\00:43:36.48 So I got a bunch of them. Multi-discipline, 00:43:36.48\00:43:40.22 multi-gender, multi range of ages from a freshman to two 00:43:40.22\00:43:44.92 seniors, and I sat with them every other week. 00:43:44.92\00:43:48.86 And I said, "What am I gonna talk to these kids about?" 00:43:48.86\00:43:52.03 So, the first time they came in, we just kind of all introduced 00:43:52.03\00:43:54.40 each other. So they're all strangers, 00:43:54.40\00:43:55.93 and I'm a stranger. And we're talking, and guess 00:43:55.93\00:43:58.53 what came up, on their own? Mental health. 00:43:58.53\00:44:02.40 Mental health. They started talking about their 00:44:02.40\00:44:04.57 own mental health, and I'm thinking, "Man, I come from a 00:44:04.57\00:44:07.11 generation you don't bring that stuff up in public at all." 00:44:07.11\00:44:09.74 [ Laughter ] Right? 00:44:09.74\00:44:13.08 They started talking. So we get -- 00:44:13.08\00:44:15.82 We go, two weeks later, Claudia brought a little food, and that 00:44:15.82\00:44:19.25 always helps. So there'd be snacks there, 00:44:19.25\00:44:21.69 they'd come, 5:00 in the afternoon. 00:44:21.69\00:44:23.79 We'd sit down together. They'd eat, we'd talk. 00:44:23.79\00:44:27.76 Eventually, we got around to, "Hey, how things going with you 00:44:27.76\00:44:30.70 and God? How do you connect with God?" 00:44:30.70\00:44:34.20 It was no big rocket-science question. 00:44:34.20\00:44:36.30 They got into it. One of the kids said -- 00:44:36.30\00:44:39.74 You know, I'll tell you a little something about prayer. 00:44:39.74\00:44:41.31 I gave him a clip to a video -- we got it online. 00:44:41.31\00:44:44.18 It's me talking about my own prayer life, such as it is. 00:44:44.18\00:44:47.38 But I talk about it. And, remember -- DIY, YouTube? 00:44:47.38\00:44:51.92 They like it. So he took it and he showed it 00:44:51.92\00:44:54.32 to his girlfriend. She liked it. 00:44:54.32\00:44:55.56 They got together with a large circle of friends on a Friday 00:44:55.56\00:44:58.19 night on this campus and they played it for the whole circle. 00:44:58.19\00:45:00.96 He came back the next time, to the meeting, and he brought his 00:45:00.96\00:45:02.53 girlfriend with him. She joined our group. 00:45:02.53\00:45:04.53 They're all just kind of like, "Wow." 00:45:04.53\00:45:06.67 It's nothing about me. It's just something simple -- 00:45:06.67\00:45:09.20 DIY! They were responding. 00:45:09.20\00:45:13.84 Now, look, if you got a better way to do this, I'm sure you're 00:45:13.84\00:45:17.51 gonna find one, but... This little group, this 00:45:17.51\00:45:21.22 collegiate council, they decide they're gonna -- 00:45:21.22\00:45:23.15 "Let's survey the campus. Let's survey all the students! 00:45:23.15\00:45:25.39 So we got permission from Student Life -- God bless you, 00:45:25.39\00:45:27.59 Student Life -- and they said, "Yeah, you can do a survey." 00:45:27.59\00:45:29.92 They checked the survey out, they said, "We'll send it out." 00:45:29.92\00:45:31.66 We got 319 responses from that survey. 00:45:31.66\00:45:34.20 Duane McBride said, "Dwight, that is a great sample." 00:45:34.20\00:45:37.77 Do you know what the number-one need of Andrews University 00:45:37.77\00:45:40.10 students, as expressed in this survey is? 00:45:40.10\00:45:41.84 The number-one need -- "I want to find a relationship 00:45:41.84\00:45:44.91 with God." The number-one need of the 00:45:44.91\00:45:48.78 Gen Z-ers on our campus now -- "Show me a relationship, help me 00:45:48.78\00:45:53.92 find a relationship with God." Wow. 00:45:53.92\00:46:00.16 Making World Changers. I guess we kind of start with 00:46:00.16\00:46:05.23 God, don't we? My... 00:46:05.23\00:46:08.50 By the way, these kids are coming back. 00:46:08.50\00:46:10.43 I can hardly wait for them to get back because they're helping 00:46:10.43\00:46:13.30 me present the first three sermons of the new year in our 00:46:13.30\00:46:15.97 newly renovated church, and the title of the series is, 00:46:15.97\00:46:18.57 "Roommates, Bad Dates, and Soulmates." 00:46:18.57\00:46:20.48 We're gonna talk about relationships. 00:46:20.48\00:46:22.41 The number-one need of Gen Z, the number-one need of the human 00:46:22.41\00:46:25.45 race. Listen, we are all isolated by 00:46:25.45\00:46:27.35 technology today. Let's not just say it's the 00:46:27.35\00:46:29.62 teens. All of us are isolated. 00:46:29.62\00:46:31.29 We're all pulling this thing out. 00:46:31.29\00:46:33.05 We're all compartmentalized and desperate for some human 00:46:33.05\00:46:37.79 connection. I think the Lord's gonna bless a 00:46:37.79\00:46:41.96 very practical how-to, DIY series. 00:46:41.96\00:46:44.63 I hope you'll be a part of it. We're bringing friends to church 00:46:44.63\00:46:47.24 August 31. So please bring your friends on 00:46:47.24\00:46:49.20 campus and off-campus with you when you come. 00:46:49.20\00:46:52.77 But here's what I found out. They're excited. 00:46:52.77\00:46:57.68 They're actually eager to meet with you. 00:46:57.68\00:47:00.45 Do you remember a few years ago, we shared 00:47:00.45\00:47:03.22 Christian Smith -- he's a sociologist at 00:47:03.22\00:47:05.92 Notre Dame University -- his discovery that the kids this age 00:47:05.92\00:47:09.72 appreciate what's on the screen right now. 00:47:09.72\00:47:12.53 Non-parental adult spiritual mentors. 00:47:12.53\00:47:16.23 In other words, these are parents. 00:47:16.23\00:47:18.87 They don't want you to be their parent. 00:47:18.87\00:47:20.84 They want you to be an adult. Don't apologize for being an 00:47:20.84\00:47:23.71 adult. Don't be intimidated by being an 00:47:23.71\00:47:25.51 adult. They like you being an adult! 00:47:25.51\00:47:27.51 They want you to do something spiritually for them. 00:47:27.51\00:47:29.88 Mentor them. Lookit, you can do the same 00:47:29.88\00:47:32.98 thing in your workplace where you work. 00:47:32.98\00:47:34.52 You got a bunch of student employees in Planned Services. 00:47:34.52\00:47:36.62 Get those student employees together. 00:47:36.62\00:47:38.09 "Hey, guys, I want to meet with you." 00:47:38.09\00:47:39.65 Can you do it Wednesday afternoon, Thursday afternoon? 00:47:39.65\00:47:42.29 When's the best time? Let's just sit down." 00:47:42.29\00:47:44.46 You meet with kids in your class. 00:47:44.46\00:47:45.93 Say, "I want to meet with a bunch of you." 00:47:45.93\00:47:47.66 You call them out by name, or you get to go to them 00:47:47.66\00:47:50.00 personally, whatever. Sit down with them. 00:47:50.00\00:47:52.07 Don't be intimidated by that circle. 00:47:52.07\00:47:54.10 They are wanting you to begin to care for them. 00:47:54.10\00:47:59.04 Of course you have to earn it. Of course you have to take time. 00:47:59.04\00:48:01.54 You're not gonna rush into this, but you're gonna do fine. 00:48:01.54\00:48:05.05 You're gonna do splendidly. You know what, God has been 00:48:05.05\00:48:08.38 waiting for this generation all His life. 00:48:08.38\00:48:12.02 They finally got here. Don't you suppose God has 00:48:12.02\00:48:16.36 already prepared a winning breakthrough strategy to reach 00:48:16.36\00:48:20.56 these young? Do you think he got caught by -- 00:48:20.56\00:48:22.90 Oh, good night. Where'd this Internet thing come 00:48:22.90\00:48:24.87 from? Gabriel, why didn't you tell 00:48:24.87\00:48:26.37 me?" [ Laughter ] 00:48:26.37\00:48:29.17 Of course not. God's been waiting for them all 00:48:29.17\00:48:32.87 His life, and now that they're here... 00:48:32.87\00:48:34.81 And His strategy -- I'll tell you what His strategy 00:48:34.81\00:48:37.28 is. Y-O-U. 00:48:37.28\00:48:40.35 Y-O-U and M-E. That's the strategy. 00:48:40.35\00:48:44.62 Come on! Pull those kids in. 00:48:44.62\00:48:46.42 Pull them into your house. Pull them into your office. 00:48:46.42\00:48:51.56 You know what, here at Pioneer, we need to reactive -- I'm 00:48:51.56\00:48:54.13 absolutely convinced. We need to reactive our 00:48:54.13\00:48:56.20 "Adopt A Student" Ministry. When there was change in campus 00:48:56.20\00:48:58.50 ministry, it kind of fell by the way. 00:48:58.50\00:48:59.90 We need to reactivate that. You community people have an 00:48:59.90\00:49:03.10 immense gift to offer -- nonparental spiritual mentoring. 00:49:03.10\00:49:06.61 Just get five of them to come over. 00:49:06.61\00:49:08.91 Let them bring their own friends. 00:49:08.91\00:49:11.15 They'll be comfortable that way. And you say, "Come over." 00:49:11.15\00:49:13.05 Of course you're gonna feel a little stiff at first. 00:49:13.05\00:49:14.92 Don't worry about it. You'll get over that stiffness 00:49:14.92\00:49:17.22 just like that. You got to step out. 00:49:17.22\00:49:20.42 You got to take a risk. That's what leaders do, 00:49:20.42\00:49:22.86 and you're a leader. You got to take a risk. 00:49:22.86\00:49:27.60 And, guess what, God wins. And, you know what, a friendship 00:49:27.60\00:49:31.63 with God, that'll be the biggest breakthrough of all, the 00:49:31.63\00:49:34.77 number-one need expressed in this university. 00:49:34.77\00:49:37.31 Oh, put that graphic one more time, please. 00:49:37.31\00:49:38.94 Put that graphic. I just love it. 00:49:38.94\00:49:40.24 Brittany Doyle, our Graphic Designer Specialist, 00:49:40.24\00:49:42.58 she put this together. Isn't that cool? 00:49:42.58\00:49:45.05 Look at that. Pow! Pow! 00:49:45.05\00:49:50.79 And it's red. You know why it's red? 00:49:50.79\00:49:53.19 Because calvary is the greatest breakthrough in the history of 00:49:53.19\00:49:55.79 the universe. That's why it's red. 00:49:55.79\00:49:57.39 Pow! At the cross, Jesus broke 00:49:57.39\00:50:00.23 through. He broke through the enemy 00:50:00.23\00:50:02.16 lines. He shattered the hold of the 00:50:02.16\00:50:04.13 enemy on this generation and on this planet. 00:50:04.13\00:50:06.50 >> Amen. >> I, if I be lifted up, I'll 00:50:06.50\00:50:08.70 draw all people to me, including Gen Z-ers." 00:50:08.70\00:50:11.21 Just before that line, he says, "And now the prince of the 00:50:11.21\00:50:13.81 world..." Pow! 00:50:13.81\00:50:16.08 Pow! It's gone. 00:50:16.08\00:50:19.85 I've denuded him. Breakthrough. 00:50:19.85\00:50:24.52 We have nothing to fear this new year, my friends. 00:50:24.52\00:50:28.26 This is God's year. He set us up for success. 00:50:28.26\00:50:30.96 He has set us up for this generation. 00:50:30.96\00:50:32.66 All he needs now is you and me. Calvary. Pow! 00:50:32.66\00:50:40.60 And so, today, we do what we just started to do last year. 00:50:40.60\00:50:45.17 We've been doing this with the new students all the time. 00:50:45.17\00:50:47.28 Seems like all the time. But last year, we did it for the 00:50:47.28\00:50:51.08 first time with the faculty staff that are gathered in this 00:50:51.08\00:50:54.52 service. And, today, I want to humbly 00:50:54.52\00:50:56.85 invite you, if you're a faculty member of a staff member or an 00:50:56.85\00:51:00.49 administrative member of Andrews University, 00:51:00.49\00:51:03.19 Andrews Academy, Ruth Murdoch Elementary School... 00:51:03.19\00:51:06.16 If you're a teacher in private school, if you're a teacher in 00:51:06.16\00:51:09.40 public school, if you're a homeschool teacher, I want to 00:51:09.40\00:51:12.43 invite you today to make the long journey from the end of the 00:51:12.43\00:51:15.70 balcony because you're gonna have an opportunity to put your 00:51:15.70\00:51:18.91 name on the line. Some of you did it last year, 00:51:18.91\00:51:21.61 and it's hanging proudly on the wall of our church, and this 00:51:21.61\00:51:24.98 will soon join it. Breakthrough. 00:51:24.98\00:51:27.82 And by signing your name, you're just saying, like I'm gonna do, 00:51:27.82\00:51:31.09 "Jesus, I'm just asking for a breakthrough. 00:51:31.09\00:51:33.42 Use me any way you wish." "Help to reach Generation Z. 00:51:33.42\00:51:36.73 Jesus, please, just help me. Help me. 00:51:36.73\00:51:39.56 You do the breakthrough. Just help me." 00:51:39.56\00:51:43.00 All right? So I'm gonna ask you, without 00:51:43.00\00:51:45.27 any further fanfare, just get to your feet, please, and come 00:51:45.27\00:51:47.97 forward. Our pastors will have red pens 00:51:47.97\00:51:49.84 because the freshmen are gonna do this Friday night. 00:51:49.84\00:51:52.24 I'm gonna talk to them, and they'll use other colors so the 00:51:52.24\00:51:56.18 red will always be leaders, and you're the leaders. 00:51:56.18\00:51:59.68 And so, lookit, it's a long way from the balcony, but don't 00:51:59.68\00:52:02.42 worry about it. Jesus is asking you, "Please, 00:52:02.42\00:52:06.09 ask Me to be Your breakthrough." Come on down. 00:52:06.09\00:52:10.03 Stay up here while you will. I'm gonna call you to take a 00:52:23.64\00:52:26.21 stand. I'm gonna call the leaders of 00:52:26.21\00:52:28.08 the church to take a stand. But now, I'm gonna invite our 00:52:28.08\00:52:32.01 faculty, our administrators, our staff, our teachers, public and 00:52:32.01\00:52:37.65 private, our homeschool... Grab a red pen. 00:52:37.65\00:52:43.02 Take that pen, and scribble your name. 00:52:43.02\00:52:46.53 And, you know, Chuck and Julie sang such a beautiful song for 00:52:46.53\00:52:49.33 us a moment ago. We need to sing those same 00:52:49.33\00:52:51.47 words, and so we're gonna put the words to 00:52:51.47\00:52:53.54 "Take My Life and Let it Be, Holy consecrated Lord to thee." 00:52:53.54\00:52:56.34 We're gonna put it on the screen, and we're gonna just 00:52:56.34\00:52:59.61 sing.
