い 00:00:01.06\00:00:07.34 >> Would you all bow your heads in prayer with me? 00:00:10.74\00:00:16.21 Father God, what a blessing it is to be here today, on your Sabbath's Easter day, Lord. 00:00:16.24\00:00:22.62 I just want to remember what you have told us in your Word. 00:00:22.62\00:00:27.52 You said in John 3:16 -- church, say it with me -- "For God so 00:00:27.56\00:00:33.13 loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that 00:00:33.13\00:00:38.27 whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting 00:00:38.27\00:00:44.04 life." 00:00:44.04\00:00:45.11 God, you are a great God, and because you have sent your Son and because He has risen, we 00:00:45.14\00:00:50.75 believe, Lord. And so we stand here today just praising your 00:00:50.75\00:00:54.98 name, honoring, glorifying you, Lord, for you are worthy. And we are nothing without you, 00:00:54.98\00:00:58.92 Lord. Thank you. In your Son, Jesus', precious, 00:00:58.92\00:01:01.79 holy, and powerful name, we pray. Amen. 00:01:01.79\00:01:05.96 You know, this morning, church, I am blessed to be able to be up here with my brother and friend 00:01:05.96\00:01:11.23 Randall to be able to sing, praise, and honor to God. But, Randall, I understood that 00:01:11.23\00:01:16.00 you have had a bit of a tough time this week. So, would you 00:01:16.00\00:01:19.84 tell us about that? I heard the testimony, and it was good. 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.11 >> Absolutely. 00:01:22.11\00:01:23.88 You know, right now I'm finishing up school. 00:01:23.91\00:01:26.08 I'm in my last year of P.T. school, and I'm on my third 00:01:26.08\00:01:28.75 clinical right now. 00:01:28.75\00:01:30.32 And that means just every day I see a lot of ugly in the world. I see a lot of broken people 00:01:30.35\00:01:34.89 who come to my clinic wanting fixing. And it's just 00:01:34.89\00:01:40.53 encouraging for me and for them to be able to share with them that there's more than this. 00:01:40.53\00:01:46.50 There's hope beyond the grave because of the cross. There's more than just this 00:01:46.50\00:01:50.14 disease that you may have. We have so much hope because of 00:01:50.14\00:01:55.21 Jesus' sacrifice. And, honestly, this is such a big Sabbath for me because it's a lot bigger 00:01:55.21\00:02:02.05 than Christmas, for me personally, because if Christmas is the start of Jesus' 00:02:02.05\00:02:05.75 mission, Easter is the triumphant ending and success of Jesus' mission here on earth. 00:02:05.75\00:02:10.89 And I just love it so much. And, church, if you will stand with me, let's sing about it 00:02:10.89\00:02:15.66 together. >> Please stand. 00:02:15.66\00:02:20.00 [ "Christ Is Risen" begins ] い 00:02:24.74\00:02:36.08 [ Congregation sings ] 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.85 >> Sing it with me. 00:05:59.12\00:06:01.79 It's because He lives. Claim it this morning. 00:07:31.98\00:07:35.65 But we have hope. We have hope this morning. 00:08:42.95\00:08:46.35 Just because He lives. 00:09:53.36\00:09:55.86 [ "Worthy Is the Lamb" begins ] [ Congregation sings ] 00:10:51.75\00:10:56.69 Worthy is He. Worthy is He of all glory and 00:14:36.84\00:14:40.24 honor, power, and praise. And we have been giving Him 00:14:40.24\00:14:43.38 glory and honor and praise this morning. 00:14:43.38\00:14:45.65 But at this time, God wants to hear what is on your heart. 00:14:45.65\00:14:49.72 If you have anything to offer God this morning, whether it's a 00:14:49.72\00:14:53.36 prayer request or just an offering of thanks, at time this 00:14:53.36\00:14:56.79 please come forward as we gather before the Lord in prayer, as we 00:14:56.79\00:15:00.63 sing "Worthy." い 00:15:00.63\00:15:08.47 [ Congregation sings ] 00:15:08.47\00:15:10.91 [ Song ends ] >> Oh, thank you, Andrews University Wind 00:20:10.71\00:20:15.88 Symphony. How about it, congregation? How about a loud 00:20:15.88\00:20:19.18 "amen"? How about a loud "amen" for that beautiful rendition of "Were You There?" -- when He 00:20:19.18\00:20:24.82 rose up from the grave. Beautiful. Thank you, Byron 00:20:24.82\00:20:29.26 Graves and musicians. We needed that. Hey, nice to see all of 00:20:29.26\00:20:33.03 you on this beautiful resurrection weekend Sabbath. You're looking so spring-y. 00:20:33.03\00:20:38.80 And we're so glad that you're here. I want to introduce you to 00:20:38.80\00:20:42.17 a friend of mine. This guy has been -- We've been friends for 00:20:42.17\00:20:45.37 some time now. He sits in my study where I write, where I have worship. He's just there. 00:20:45.37\00:20:48.71 He's not a real conversationalist. Let's see. 00:20:48.71\00:20:50.95 Which door is he gonna come out of? I need to invite him to come 00:20:50.95\00:20:53.98 on out here. Oh, here he comes. He's coming out the other door. 00:20:53.98\00:20:56.75 Sorry. He's over here. Oh, I want you to meet my friend. 00:20:56.75\00:20:59.65 He's my buddy. He is my buddy. Tabones. His name is Tabones. 00:20:59.65\00:21:05.43 Thank you, Deacon Dan. Oh, he's so happy. 00:21:05.43\00:21:10.43 You know, he's never come to church before. 00:21:10.47\00:21:12.03 This is the first time he's come to church. 00:21:12.03\00:21:13.60 And I wanted it to be on this weekend, and so -- 00:21:13.60\00:21:17.54 Don't talk to him because he doesn't talk. He's a skeleton. 00:21:17.57\00:21:21.71 Do you know what? When you were in your mommy's tummy, already 00:21:21.71\00:21:26.45 Jesus the Creator was beginning to put a little, tiny skeleton together, not this big, not this 00:21:26.45\00:21:31.65 many bones, but as you keep growing, one of these days you're gonna have 206 bones from 00:21:31.65\00:21:38.03 the tip of the toe to the crown of the head just like Tabones, 00:21:38.03\00:21:43.53 my friend. Yep. And do you know what? You got a skeleton inside of you right now, don't you? 00:21:43.53\00:21:48.27 Can you feel your skeleton? Anybody can feel your skeleton? Grab your knee. Grab your knee. 00:21:48.27\00:21:52.31 Grab your knee. Oh, oh. This part right here. Grab the knee. 00:21:52.31\00:21:56.41 Oh, I feel it. We got a skeleton inside. Here's the question for you. Did Jesus have a skeleton? 00:21:56.41\00:22:01.02 Yes or no? >> Yes! >> Well, of course. 00:22:01.02\00:22:03.85 He had to have a skeleton. He is human just like you and me. 00:22:03.85\00:22:08.59 Jesus had a skeleton. Could you see it? No, because He had, like 00:22:08.59\00:22:13.13 you, skin all over it. But you know what? I went -- So, I'm 00:22:13.13\00:22:19.43 giving you a little report now. I went to Jerusalem, where Jesus 00:22:19.43\00:22:24.31 died. And I went to the two graves. And they're not sure which one is it, so I went to 00:22:24.31\00:22:28.91 them both, where Jesus was buried, and I checked them both out. And I'm here to report to 00:22:28.91\00:22:33.55 you right now -- Are you listening? Right now I'm here to tell you that I could not see -- 00:22:33.55\00:22:39.32 I'm telling you the truth. I could not see any bones in 00:22:39.32\00:22:46.46 Jesus' tomb. Do you know why? >> Why? >> Why? 00:22:46.46\00:22:49.96 >> Resurrected. [ Laughter ] >> Oh, I like an inquisitive 00:22:49.96\00:22:53.44 mind like that. Yeah. Why could I not see any bones? 00:22:53.44\00:22:57.97 >> Because He -- He raised up and He... >> He raised up. 00:22:57.97\00:23:02.81 You got it, my man. He raised up, and He still has His skeleton, but He raised up. 00:23:02.81\00:23:10.85 Do you know what they call it when you're sleeping in death and you get raised up? 00:23:10.85\00:23:15.12 There's a technical word for it. They call it resurrection. Let me hear you say it. 00:23:15.12\00:23:21.26 >> Resurrection. >> And when Jesus came up, He still had His 00:23:21.26\00:23:27.10 same friends. He still went on walks and talks with them. And then one day -- schoo! -- 00:23:27.10\00:23:32.07 there He went to Heaven. But the very good news is He's coming back soon, and when he 00:23:32.07\00:23:37.61 comes back, if any of us is sleeping in the grave, don't 00:23:37.61\00:23:45.49 worry. If we have a grandma sleeping in the grave, we have a grandpa sleeping in the grave, 00:23:45.49\00:23:50.03 even a mommy or a daddy, don't worry. When Jesus comes, resurrection means the sleeping 00:23:50.03\00:23:59.07 wake up. He's gonna call our names. And He's gonna say, "Yo, you. Yo, Johnny, come on. 00:23:59.07\00:24:07.31 I've come to take you home." Oh, my. I want to be there. I don't 00:24:07.31\00:24:13.58 want to die. I want to be there when Jesus comes, don't you? >> 00:24:13.58\00:24:17.69 Oh, yes, I do. >> But I'm not worried. I'm not worried at all. Who wants to -- Who would like, 00:24:17.69\00:24:22.86 on this resurrection Sabbath, to pray to Jesus and say, "Oh, Jesus, thank you for conquering 00:24:22.86\00:24:29.16 the grave. We're not afraid of death because you're gonna come 00:24:29.16\00:24:33.90 and you're gonna give us life forever and ever." And, young 00:24:33.90\00:24:37.87 man, did you have your hand up? >> What? >> Did you have your 00:24:37.87\00:24:40.14 hand up? >> Yeah. >> Do you want to pray? >> Yeah. 00:24:40.14\00:24:42.41 >> Oh, good. Come on over. What's your first name? >> Jack. 00:24:42.41\00:24:45.61 >> Jack. Oh, I like that name -- Jack. Okay, we're gonna pray 00:24:45.61\00:24:48.75 with Jack. Let's fold our hands, close our eyes, and thank Jesus 00:24:48.75\00:24:54.22 for being our Savior. Jack? >> Dear Jesus, thank you for 00:24:54.22\00:24:57.73 this day. Thank you for Sabbath. Thank you for all the wonderful 00:24:57.73\00:25:01.60 things that you have made. Thank you for Easter. Thank you that 00:25:01.60\00:25:07.14 you have died on the cross. Amen. >> Amen. Thank you, Jack. 00:25:07.14\00:25:10.21 That was beautiful. As you go quietly and reverently back to your seats, thank you, 00:25:10.21\00:25:14.51 Jesus. Just like Jack said, thank you, Jesus, for being our 00:25:14.51\00:25:18.38 Savior. Happy resurrection Sabbath to you. 00:25:18.38\00:25:20.98 [ "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" begins ] 00:25:25.39\00:25:30.49 [ Congregation sings ] 00:26:02.32\00:26:04.93 [ Congregation sings ] 00:28:18.83\00:28:21.40 [ Song ends ] >> Oh, God, we sing those words -- "Ours the 00:29:03.10\00:29:10.68 cross, the grave, the skies." Hallelujah. We've not come to 00:29:10.68\00:29:17.49 this place without hope. We have come with a sadness perhaps, but we have not entered 00:29:17.49\00:29:25.06 here without hope. Let the living Christ engage our minds and address our hearts. 00:29:25.06\00:29:31.17 We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:29:31.17\00:29:34.17 You may be seated. As we celebrate the resurrection 00:29:34.20\00:29:40.88 of our Lord Jesus Christ today, do you know what the number-one 00:29:40.88\00:29:47.18 cause of stress is this resurrection weekend in the 00:29:47.18\00:29:52.25 United States, the number-one reason why Americans are 00:29:52.25\00:29:56.86 stressed out on this sacred weekend? 00:29:56.86\00:30:02.13 Number one. And by the way, a few weeks ago, 00:30:02.13\00:30:04.87 we did a survey of the student body -- 318 responses. 00:30:04.87\00:30:09.24 "What is your number-one felt need?" 00:30:09.24\00:30:12.01 Number two in the Andrews University student body 00:30:12.01\00:30:16.18 is the number-one stressor in America right now. 00:30:16.18\00:30:21.12 Question -- does the resurrection of Jesus Christ offer any solution to our 00:30:21.15\00:30:29.46 number-one need? Let me read a poem to you composed by 00:30:29.46\00:30:35.43 Paul Laurence Dunbar, a very short poem simply titled "The 00:30:35.43\00:30:40.27 Debt." That's D-E-B-T. Three verses. "This is the debt I pay, 00:30:40.27\00:30:48.71 just for one riotous day -- years of regret and grief, sorrow without relief. 00:30:48.71\00:30:56.45 Pay it I will to the end, until the grave, my friend, gives me a true release, gives me the clasp 00:30:56.45\00:31:03.63 of peace. Slight was the thing I bought. Small was the debt I 00:31:03.63\00:31:10.80 thought. Poor was the loan at best. But, oh, the interest." 00:31:10.80\00:31:20.04 Debt. There isn't one of us here that doesn't know the meaning of that word that sounds just like 00:31:20.04\00:31:24.91 "death." And what's the difference? And by the way, even 00:31:24.91\00:31:32.09 if it's not financial debt that you face today, the truth of the matter is that there's 00:31:32.09\00:31:37.79 depression. And what is depression but emotional debt? There is despair, and what is 00:31:37.79\00:31:43.73 despair but existential debt? There is discouragement, and what is discouragement but 00:31:43.73\00:31:48.60 personal debt? There's divorce, relational debt, destruction, 00:31:48.60\00:31:56.41 painful debt, death, the ultimate of debts. So, the question this resurrection 00:31:56.41\00:32:05.42 weekend for us is, who shall deliver us from this body of debt? We turn to the 00:32:05.42\00:32:12.23 resurrection story. Open your Bible with me, please, to the 00:32:12.23\00:32:15.63 Gospel of Luke. You got your phone with you? Pull it out. Luke chapter 24. Let's go to the 00:32:15.63\00:32:19.90 resurrection story. Luke chapter 24. I'm in the New International 00:32:19.90\00:32:23.44 Version today. Luke 24. Didn't bring a Bible, grab the 00:32:23.44\00:32:27.74 pew Bible in front of you. Just let your eyes rest on the story of that first resurrection 00:32:27.74\00:32:34.48 long ago. 00:32:34.48\00:32:35.88 Luke chapter 24, picking it up in verse 1. 00:32:35.92\00:32:38.15 "And on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, 00:32:38.15\00:32:41.49 the women took the spices they had prepared, and they went to 00:32:41.49\00:32:44.83 the tomb. They found the stone rolled away 00:32:44.83\00:32:47.60 from the tomb, and when they entered, they did not find the 00:32:47.60\00:32:51.57 body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about 00:32:51.57\00:32:55.14 this, suddenly --" schoo! -- "two men in clothes that gleamed 00:32:55.14\00:32:59.57 like lightning stood beside them. 00:32:59.57\00:33:02.44 And in their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to 00:33:02.44\00:33:04.98 the ground." Whatever beings these are, they 00:33:04.98\00:33:07.48 deserve worship, and they are on their faces. 00:33:07.48\00:33:10.35 And the men speak. "But the men said to them --" 00:33:10.35\00:33:13.99 I love this -- "'Why do you look for the living among the dead?'" 00:33:13.99\00:33:18.49 "Did you have the address for this cemetery to find the one you're looking for? 00:33:18.53\00:33:23.67 Why are you looking -- There aren't living around here. This 00:33:23.67\00:33:29.27 is a cemetery." "'Why do you look for the living among the 00:33:29.30\00:33:31.87 dead? He's not here. He's risen. Remember how he told you, while 00:33:31.87\00:33:35.98 he was still with you in Galilee.'" 00:33:35.98\00:33:38.31 The words of Jesus -- now here they come -- "'"The Son of Man 00:33:38.31\00:33:42.48 must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified 00:33:42.48\00:33:46.59 and on the third day be raised again."' 00:33:46.59\00:33:49.42 And then --" the last line of the Easter story -- "And then 00:33:49.42\00:33:53.09 they remembered His words." 00:33:53.09\00:33:57.80 Turns out that our deliverance from debt has a whole lot to do with remembering because how 00:33:57.83\00:34:04.61 easily we forget, how we forget that just yesterday I had to have this, I had to have it, and 00:34:04.61\00:34:11.48 today I can't figure out how I pay for this now. How easily we 00:34:11.48\00:34:17.19 forget. How did Paul Laurence Dunbar put it? "Slight was the 00:34:17.19\00:34:21.92 thing I bought. Small was the debt I thought. Poor was the loan at best. But, oh, the 00:34:21.92\00:34:27.46 interest." And it's the interest that kills us, en-chains us, and 00:34:27.46\00:34:30.67 suffocates us. We all know it. How quickly we forget. Put that last line up again -- 00:34:30.67\00:34:37.11 Luke 24:8. "Then they remembered His words," because how easily 00:34:37.11\00:34:45.65 we forget, all of us, which is how we get into debt time after 00:34:45.65\00:34:50.22 time again. All of us -- we forget. And by the way, how big 00:34:50.22\00:34:53.79 is this all of us? You'll be surprised to hear this. You're 00:34:53.79\00:34:56.22 not alone. Let me run some stats by you. Reach into your resurrection weekend bulletin. 00:34:56.22\00:35:00.86 Pull out the study guide for today. Pull it out. 00:35:00.86\00:35:04.50 Jot these numbers down, will you? You didn't get a study 00:35:04.50\00:35:07.60 guide, here come our ushers. They'll make sure you have one. Just put your hand up -- up in 00:35:07.60\00:35:11.31 the balcony, as well -- and we'll be happy to serve you. Those of you who are watching on 00:35:11.31\00:35:15.48 television -- live stream or television delayed -- we're glad that you're here on this joyous 00:35:15.48\00:35:21.25 weekend. You see on the screen there -- this is the little 00:35:21.25\00:35:26.69 series, "How to Survive the Coming Economic Crisis." This is 00:35:26.69\00:35:30.76 a miniseries. It ends next week, the final wrap-up. But today's 00:35:30.76\00:35:35.30 edition, "Breaking the Chains of Financial Bondage" -- who 00:35:35.30\00:35:39.13 doesn't want that? Me too. Okay, let's jot it down. We're not 00:35:39.13\00:35:41.94 alone. Here's the good news. Misery loves company. Jot these 00:35:41.94\00:35:45.41 numbers down. At the end of last year, 178.6 million Americans 00:35:45.41\00:35:52.41 had a credit card. Wow. Keep going. And the average credit 00:35:52.41\00:35:56.52 card debt per borrower is $5,736, up about 7.5% from 2016. Can you believe it? 00:35:56.52\00:36:07.60 In fact, keep writing. If you paid only the minimum 00:36:07.66\00:36:10.87 payments on a $5,000 credit-card debt, you would be in debt for 00:36:10.87\00:36:15.54 more than 18 years. And -- get this. 00:36:15.54\00:36:18.47 And you would end up paying $6,372 in interest based on 00:36:18.47\00:36:22.61 national averages, which means -- add the $5,000 -- you 00:36:22.61\00:36:26.15 pay over $11,000 just to pay off that $5,000 bill. 00:36:26.15\00:36:30.69 Go figure. Did you think they were in this as a ministry to 00:36:30.72\00:36:34.59 you? [ Laughter ] Millennials -- no, no, before that. 00:36:34.59\00:36:40.23 According to a NerdWallet study, the average American household 00:36:40.23\00:36:45.83 -- get this -- has more than $16,000 in credit-card debt. That's not mortgage, student 00:36:45.83\00:36:49.77 loan, nothing. That's only credit cards. Keep writing. 00:36:49.77\00:36:52.91 Millennials -- here we go now -- 18 to 34 -- got millennials here 00:36:52.91\00:36:58.48 today. 18 to 34, millennials now carry around $36,000 in debt. That includes student loans. 00:36:58.48\00:37:06.22 That includes credit cards. That includes mortgages -- very few millennials with mortgages. 00:37:06.22\00:37:11.53 In fact -- jot this down -- total student debt in this country now exceeds 00:37:11.53\00:37:15.66 $1.3 million. I'm sorry. Trillion. I just can't say that 00:37:15.66\00:37:23.47 word. I just can't say that word. [ Laughing ] Thank you for 00:37:23.47\00:37:26.74 correcting me. Man, I am so glad you're here today. [ Laughter ] 00:37:26.74\00:37:30.58 I just can't say the word "trillion." It just doesn't seem 00:37:30.58\00:37:33.18 possible. How could you have $1.3 million -- $1.3 trillion of 00:37:33.18\00:37:39.49 student loans? I'm leaving that number right now. You know what? 00:37:39.49\00:37:43.09 For this generation -- Seriously, for this generation, mortgage is not the new debt. 00:37:43.09\00:37:46.66 They'll never have to worry about mortgage because they'll be paying off their education. 00:37:46.66\00:37:50.40 That's their houses now. My. Okay. Keep going. 00:37:50.40\00:37:55.94 Thus, 75% of Americans live from paycheck to paycheck, nothing 00:37:55.94\00:38:00.71 left over. Keep going. More than half have less than $1,000 reserved somewhere for 00:38:00.71\00:38:05.28 emergency purposes. 00:38:05.28\00:38:06.68 And the final number -- according to USA Today, some 40 00:38:06.72\00:38:10.32 million Americans, or 16% of the adults, think they will miss at 00:38:10.32\00:38:14.49 least one credit-card due date in 2019. 00:38:14.49\00:38:17.83 "I will go in debt further 'cause I'll miss it." 00:38:17.83\00:38:21.63 Why? Because we're in debt. That's the big deal, the number-one stressor in America. 00:38:21.66\00:38:25.97 So, like the women at the tomb who are wondering as they go to the tomb, "Who's gonna roll the 00:38:25.97\00:38:29.74 stone away?" we're asking the same thing this resurrection weekend -- "Who's gonna roll the 00:38:29.74\00:38:33.38 stone of my debt away, my little credit card. I can't pay it 00:38:33.38\00:38:37.68 off." Hmm. "Then --" How's that line go? "Then they remembered 00:38:37.68\00:38:44.05 Jesus' words." And what shall the words of Jesus tell us? 00:38:44.05\00:38:48.92 Well, let's just go back to the words that the angels quoted. Jot this down in your study 00:38:48.92\00:38:52.23 guide. Remember, they said, "Now, don't you remember what He 00:38:52.23\00:38:55.46 told you?" And here's what He told them. "The Son of Man must 00:38:55.50\00:38:58.23 be delivered over to the hands of sinners --" key word -- "to 00:38:58.23\00:39:01.94 the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day 00:39:01.94\00:39:05.51 be raised again." 00:39:05.51\00:39:06.57 It's the Gospel story in one, tiny sentence, and you just got 00:39:06.61\00:39:10.25 it. Answer me this question. When Jesus died on the cross 2,000 years ago, on 00:39:10.25\00:39:14.28 Good Friday -- and by the way, for His followers then, it was an awful and tragic Friday. 00:39:14.28\00:39:19.09 But when Jesus died on the cross, what does the Gospel 00:39:19.09\00:39:22.72 declare? What does the Bible teach that God placed upon Jesus? What did God place upon 00:39:22.72\00:39:31.70 Jesus? Let's find out. Isaiah 53:6. You remember this line. 00:39:31.70\00:39:35.74 "And the Lord has laid on Him the --" what? -- the iniquity, the sins, all of them. 00:39:35.74\00:39:41.08 You're saying, "What sins are you talking about, Dwight?" I'm telling about them all, 00:39:41.08\00:39:43.61 the ones that we laugh off with a little snicker. "Not a big 00:39:43.61\00:39:46.48 deal." The ones that are so oppressive with their guilt it's like a ball and chain that we 00:39:46.48\00:39:50.19 carry through life. Those are the sins. He took them all, all 00:39:50.19\00:39:53.12 of my sins. Is that just an Old Testament bit of good news? 00:39:53.12\00:39:55.99 No. God laid the debt of all my sins on the heart of the Lord 00:39:55.99\00:39:59.96 Jesus, and it crushed His heart. It's also New Testament. Jot 00:39:59.96\00:40:04.17 this down. 2 Corinthians 5:21 -- "And God made Him who had no sin to be sin for you and me, so 00:40:04.17\00:40:10.71 that in Christ we might become the righteousness of God." Our terrible indebtedness was 00:40:10.71\00:40:16.71 laid on Him. Ladies and gentlemen, I want to tell you 00:40:16.71\00:40:19.88 something. This is great news. His spotless, perfectly lived life, un-indebted, was credit, 00:40:19.88\00:40:26.12 has been credited to you and to me. In fact -- jot this down, 00:40:26.12\00:40:33.09 will you? -- "He died a debtor, so that we might live debt free." "Yeah, but, Dwight, come 00:40:33.09\00:40:38.83 on. Time out, time out. I know -- Listen, listen. This is talking about moral 00:40:38.83\00:40:42.84 indebtedness. Nobody here is talking about financial indebtedness, those 00:40:42.84\00:40:46.57 verses you're quoting." Oh, so you want something that has a little monetary jingle to 00:40:46.57\00:40:49.84 it? 00:40:49.84\00:40:50.91 I'll give you one, another one -- 2 Corinthians chapter 8 00:40:50.95\00:40:54.42 on the screen, 8:9 -- "For you know the grace of our 00:40:54.42\00:40:57.92 Lord Jesus Christ that though He was rich, yet for your sake He 00:40:57.92\00:41:02.29 became poor so that you, through His poverty, might become rich." 00:41:02.29\00:41:07.76 I hate to tell you, but that's about as monetary a depiction as you can get anywhere in the 00:41:07.76\00:41:12.30 Bible. He who was the richest of the rich took on the poverty of 00:41:12.30\00:41:16.04 you and me, and who are we? We are the poorest of the poor. 00:41:16.04\00:41:21.81 Look at us. So that through that transaction, we who are in debt up to our eyeballs might be 00:41:21.81\00:41:27.25 delivered from our debt by exchanging our debt for His 00:41:27.25\00:41:34.12 wealth and riches. The story of the resurrection. Hallelujah. 00:41:34.12\00:41:41.40 But we forget. Put that line again, please, the last line of this Easter story that we read 00:41:41.40\00:41:47.47 -- "Then they remembered His words." "Yeah, but come on, 00:41:47.47\00:41:52.31 Dwight. Please. What does this have to do with freeing me from financial bondage, from 00:41:52.31\00:41:55.91 financial debt?" That's a very good question. Let me answer the question with another question. 00:41:55.91\00:42:00.32 Could it be -- Now, think with me. 00:42:00.32\00:42:02.45 Could it be that the Christ who bore our moral indebtedness to 00:42:02.48\00:42:05.65 the grave and He buried it in that grave and He came up out of 00:42:05.65\00:42:08.89 the grave without that moral indebtedness -- it's all 00:42:08.89\00:42:11.69 buried -- could it be that that same Jesus has the capacity to 00:42:11.69\00:42:15.50 bury our financial indebtedness in the hole in the ground and 00:42:15.50\00:42:19.93 leave it there and we come up free and delivered? 00:42:19.93\00:42:27.28 I mean, couldn't He do it? Of course. 00:42:27.28\00:42:31.41 It's just a rhetorical question. You got to remember what He 00:42:31.41\00:42:34.65 said. That's what the women said -- 00:42:34.65\00:42:36.05 "Oh, I get it now. I remember what He said." 00:42:36.05\00:42:37.72 You remember what He said in the Sermon on the Mount? 00:42:37.72\00:42:40.52 See if you remember this one. Jot it down in your study guide, 00:42:40.56\00:42:44.13 Jesus speaking, Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 6:33. "Seek --" what's the next word? 00:42:44.13\00:42:48.93 "Seek first." Ooh. "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all 00:42:48.93\00:42:54.80 these things will be added to you." "Now, Dwight, how's that 00:42:54.80\00:42:58.67 gonna get me out of financial debt?" Oh, I want to share with 00:42:58.67\00:43:02.18 you a story. I just learned this story this week. You're not 00:43:02.18\00:43:07.02 gonna -- Well, you might believe it. [ Laughter ] I'm gonna say 00:43:07.02\00:43:11.09 this story 'cause I want to -- to the last action step. Let me share with you a handful 00:43:11.09\00:43:14.22 of action steps, all right? We're talking about credit-card 00:43:14.22\00:43:17.26 debt. That's all America's thinking about on this holiday weekend. So let's talk about 00:43:17.26\00:43:21.10 that. Let me just share with you a series of action steps. Jot them down real quick. 00:43:21.10\00:43:24.80 They're there in your study guide. Number one, perform what 00:43:24.80\00:43:27.74 Dave Ramsey calls a "plasectomy." Do you know what a 00:43:27.74\00:43:32.87 plasectomy is? It's cutting up the plastic in your wallet. 00:43:32.87\00:43:37.15 Use cash. Use cash. We get a little magazine here at 00:43:37.15\00:43:42.05 the church called Thriving. It's put out by a Christian credit 00:43:42.05\00:43:45.55 union. I was going through that magazine just two or three weeks ago, and I came across this 00:43:45.55\00:43:52.16 interesting little bit of practical counsel. I put it in. 00:43:52.16\00:43:54.93 It's not a fill-in-the-blank thing, but you see it tucked into your study guide. 00:43:54.93\00:43:58.67 Thriving is saying, "Okay, number one, don't use debt -- don't use credit cards to buy 00:43:58.67\00:44:02.54 short-term consumer goods such as clothing, entertainment, or 00:44:02.54\00:44:06.01 electronics." Just -- Come on. Why? Because it's gonna be gone. 00:44:06.01\00:44:09.11 I'll outgrow it. Number two -- "Avoid debt over items with a short life-span and little 00:44:09.11\00:44:13.72 resale value." That thing's worth nothing now. And finally, number three -- "Avoid debt 00:44:13.72\00:44:18.45 which comes with a very high interest rate." And guess what. Credit cards come with a very 00:44:18.45\00:44:22.19 high interest rate. Avoid those. Okay. Cash. Number one. 00:44:22.19\00:44:26.93 Number two. No, no. Put Dave Ramsey up. You got to hear 00:44:26.93\00:44:31.33 Ramsey speak for himself. 00:44:31.33\00:44:32.40 On the screen -- this is Dave Ramsey -- "There is no --" 00:44:32.43\00:44:34.74 those are his caps -- "There is no positive side to credit card 00:44:34.74\00:44:38.51 use. You will spend 12% to 18% more 00:44:38.51\00:44:41.68 if you use credit cards instead of cash." 00:44:41.68\00:44:44.51 Why? Because you've already got it. 00:44:44.51\00:44:45.95 "I can afford it." If you have to use plastic, I 00:44:45.95\00:44:49.32 suggest a debit card. I use them for travel and the 00:44:49.32\00:44:52.52 occasional convenience of ordering something over the 00:44:52.52\00:44:54.69 Internet or phone. Other than that, I use cash." 00:44:54.69\00:44:59.23 You can be as poor as a church mouse and still just use cash. Okay, number two -- "Always pay 00:44:59.26\00:45:05.03 more than the minimum." We got that one from those numbers a 00:45:05.03\00:45:08.24 moment ago. I mean, can you believe that -- $5,000 balance? Paying the minimum payment, 00:45:08.24\00:45:11.67 it'll take you over 18 years to pay it off, and you end up paying interest of $6,372, plus 00:45:11.67\00:45:17.41 the $5,000. They're not trying to be your best friend. 00:45:17.41\00:45:22.35 Unh-unh. Pay more than the minimum. Come on. 00:45:22.35\00:45:24.59 Pay more than the minimum. 00:45:24.59\00:45:25.99 Okay, number three -- "Pay off your credit cards beginning with 00:45:26.02\00:45:28.99 the lowest balance in order to experience success as soon as 00:45:28.99\00:45:31.83 possible." There's some counselors out 00:45:31.83\00:45:33.33 there -- and I've seen them online. 00:45:33.33\00:45:35.53 There's some counselors that say, "No, no, take the highest-interest-rate loan that 00:45:35.56\00:45:38.77 you're paying off and work on that one." No, because you know 00:45:38.77\00:45:41.57 what? You'll be paying that forever, and you will never 00:45:41.57\00:45:44.47 taste success. Take the smallest one you got and just have a party when you do the first one 00:45:44.47\00:45:49.88 and you pay it off, all right? Number four -- "Reduce the 00:45:49.88\00:45:54.52 interest rate." The Motley Fool website -- their address, by the 00:45:54.52\00:46:01.19 way, www.fool.com. I love that. The Motley Fool -- you know what 00:46:01.19\00:46:05.06 they suggest? "The credit card companies are so eager to keep you as their customer, they will 00:46:05.06\00:46:11.03 oftentimes lower their finance charge." Call them up. There's an 800 number on the 00:46:11.03\00:46:15.30 back of your bill. Call them up. But here's the caveat. 00:46:15.30\00:46:18.47 You have to call them before you miss your first payment because once you've missed a payment, 00:46:18.47\00:46:23.98 you are a liability to them. They won't talk nothing with 00:46:23.98\00:46:28.58 you. So, call them while you're still making the minimum payments and say, "Sir, I'd love 00:46:28.58\00:46:33.02 to stay with your company. I need you to lower my rate." You'll be surprised what they'll 00:46:33.02\00:46:38.03 do for you. Okay, number five -- "Beware of debt settlement 00:46:38.03\00:46:41.66 companies." Oh, brother. The Federal Trade Commission gets a 00:46:41.66\00:46:44.63 heavy volume of complaints from consumers about these. "Hey, come on. Come over here. 00:46:44.63\00:46:47.37 Come to this website. Come over here. We'll help you out, man. 00:46:47.37\00:46:49.34 We'll just take a little bit of your money, and we'll help you 00:46:49.34\00:46:51.74 out." Forget it. You need to either go straight to your credit-card company, 00:46:51.74\00:46:55.98 go to the bank where you have this loan, or call this number. Now, this didn't get in your 00:46:55.98\00:46:59.88 study guide, and I want you to put it on the screen, please. Let's put that number. 00:46:59.88\00:47:02.52 It's an 800 number. Call the National Foundation for Credit 00:47:02.52\00:47:05.82 Counseling. I called this number last week to check it out. It's 00:47:05.82\00:47:09.99 okay. In fact, do you know they are the first and largest nonprofit dedicated in this 00:47:09.99\00:47:15.90 nation to financial well-being? So, jot this down for a friend of yours, all right? 00:47:15.90\00:47:19.53 You don't need it. But jot it down for a friend of yours. 00:47:19.53\00:47:22.00 800 -- 800-388-2227. Give it to your friend. Do her a favor. 00:47:22.00\00:47:29.21 Do him a favor. Hang on to that number and give it to them. 00:47:29.21\00:47:32.98 All right. Because the point is this -- you got to talk to 00:47:32.98\00:47:38.09 somebody. You have to talk. You can't just keep it inside. And that's action -- There are 00:47:38.09\00:47:41.19 only seven of these. Here comes action step number six -- "Talk 00:47:41.19\00:47:45.36 to somebody." You've got to talk. 00:47:45.36\00:47:48.36 James Scurlock in his eye-opening book "Maxed Out" 00:47:48.40\00:47:51.03 puts it this way -- on the screen -- "Maybe it's because of 00:47:51.03\00:47:54.77 what Dave Ramsey calls the intense shame that everybody 00:47:54.77\00:47:58.77 feels about debt, the false certainty that everybody else 00:47:58.77\00:48:03.01 has got it to together except poor little me." 00:48:03.01\00:48:06.78 Wrong. "Or maybe it's what Bob, the 00:48:06.78\00:48:10.19 Debtors Anonymous member I interviewed, told me." 00:48:10.19\00:48:13.02 Bob said, "Debt is simply not a socially acceptable topic. 00:48:13.02\00:48:16.32 One can talk about one's sex life or even one's drug 00:48:16.32\00:48:19.29 addiction as though it were fashionable, but owning up to 00:48:19.29\00:48:22.53 one's financial troubles means being ostracized from the world 00:48:22.53\00:48:26.00 of polite conversation." 00:48:26.00\00:48:28.30 It's true. There's just a stigma. There is shame attached 00:48:28.34\00:48:32.34 to this. You got to get over that shame. You've suffered long enough. Resurrection is about 00:48:32.34\00:48:39.15 freedom. It's time to begin the freedom march. Talk to somebody. 00:48:39.15\00:48:43.08 You got that 800 number. Talk to them. You got somebody that's 00:48:43.08\00:48:47.89 close that you feel safe with? Talk to her. Talk to him. From paupers to millionaires, 00:48:47.89\00:48:54.03 there are thousands of people in debt. You're not alone. 00:48:54.03\00:48:59.13 Don't be shamed out of help. You need help. Now, here it comes. 00:48:59.13\00:49:06.68 I promised you this short story before I sit down. Here it 00:49:06.68\00:49:09.88 comes. I wish you could have been in chapel this week. Were you in chapel this week? 00:49:09.88\00:49:13.62 Aw, I wish you could have been in chapel this week. It was 00:49:13.62\00:49:16.48 something else. We had a student right up here. He is a pre-med biology major from Pennsylvania. 00:49:16.48\00:49:21.19 His name -- Gianni Zanatta. Okay? So, Gianni delivers the 00:49:21.19\00:49:25.96 chapel address, and I'm sitting right over there. And he opens 00:49:25.96\00:49:31.37 up -- This is very clever. He opens up with a black screen and in white letters -- "Money." 00:49:31.37\00:49:35.80 Got all of our attention. And he says, "Okay, guys, I'm gonna ask 00:49:35.80\00:49:39.17 you a series of questions, and here come the questions. Questions number one -- how many 00:49:39.17\00:49:42.44 of you take advantage of one of these monthly subscription 00:49:42.44\00:49:45.95 services?" And on the screen, there was Dollar Shave Club, and 00:49:45.95\00:49:49.45 there was Ipsy. Dollar Shave is for the guys. Ipsy's for the girls 'cause they'll send you 00:49:49.45\00:49:53.96 all that makeup that you want. "Just keep -- keep telling us to 00:49:53.96\00:49:57.39 send it to you. With a bill, of course, but just -- we'll keep sending it." Now, he put up a 00:49:57.39\00:50:01.96 whole bunch of them. And hands went up all over this place. 00:50:01.96\00:50:03.93 He said, "Okay, now I'm gonna raise the bar a little. How many 00:50:03.93\00:50:07.14 pay monthly subscription fees for music? That would be iTunes 00:50:07.14\00:50:09.90 or Spotify." "Oh, of course. I got to have my music." Okay. 00:50:09.90\00:50:12.97 Good. And the only way you can do that, by the way, is with a 00:50:12.97\00:50:17.31 credit card. They're pretty clever. The only way you can do that is with a credit card. 00:50:17.31\00:50:19.65 All right, number three. He says, "Okay, but now, how many of you pay for your own 00:50:19.65\00:50:23.55 food?" Well, far less hands went up, but some hands went up. 00:50:23.55\00:50:27.12 All right. "How many of you are paying for your apartment or 00:50:27.12\00:50:31.99 your dormitory room?" Fewer hands still, but they're going 00:50:31.99\00:50:34.56 up. Finally, the last question -- "How many of you are paying your own school bill?" 00:50:34.56\00:50:39.97 I turned around to look. I saw two girls sitting right there. 00:50:39.97\00:50:43.44 That was it. Now, there may have been more. I couldn't see 00:50:43.44\00:50:46.27 everybody. And then he said, "Let me tell you a story. As a 00:50:46.27\00:50:49.74 student at Andrews University, this is what happened to me. You 00:50:49.74\00:50:53.58 know those little credit-card things they keep sticking in your bag at the bookstore 'cause 00:50:53.58\00:50:57.85 everybody wants to get into that bag? I sent one in. I got a 00:50:57.85\00:51:02.49 credit card. It came to me, in my name. $200 credit limit. Yes! 00:51:02.49\00:51:09.00 [ Laughter ] So, he said, "I started using that credit card, 00:51:09.00\00:51:12.90 and I was paying the minimum payment. Oh, boy, did they love me paying the minimum payment. 00:51:12.90\00:51:16.91 Suddenly, a few months later I went up to $400. Yo! 00:51:16.91\00:51:20.54 $400 credit limit. Good. And so I kept paying that minimum 00:51:20.54\00:51:24.58 payment. Bum-bum. Suddenly, I go up to $800 credit limit. 00:51:24.58\00:51:30.19 Wow. I kept making my minimum payment. 00:51:30.19\00:51:33.52 They -- true story -- They raised me up to $1,600. My, my, 00:51:33.52\00:51:43.67 my, my, my." But what he didn't realize was happening is his minimum payment was making his 00:51:43.67\00:51:49.44 debt go like this. Chk...chk...chk...chk...chk. And one day it hit him. 00:51:49.44\00:51:56.61 He was so embarrassed and shamed. This is what he's saying 00:51:56.61\00:52:00.78 right here. He said, "I didn't want to talk to anybody, I was 00:52:00.78\00:52:03.32 so embarrassed. I finally went to some close friends, and I 00:52:03.32\00:52:06.12 told them, 'You can't believe what I've done.' Finally I went to God," he said. He's a 00:52:06.12\00:52:13.03 preacher's kid. He said, "God, what am I gonna do? I got myself 00:52:13.03\00:52:18.57 in a pickle now." And just like that, not a voice, but a conviction came to his mind. 00:52:18.57\00:52:22.40 Schoo! "Yo, all that tithe that you haven't been paying in order 00:52:22.40\00:52:28.44 to pay off everything else -- what's happening with that?" And he said it was just like, 00:52:28.44\00:52:34.88 "Ah." And then he put it up on the screen, so I'm gonna do the 00:52:34.88\00:52:38.35 same thing right here. He put up these familiar words from 00:52:38.35\00:52:41.92 Malachi 3:10. And he took it right beyond Malachi verse 10 -- 00:52:41.96\00:52:44.99 that's 3:10 on this one -- "Bring the whole tithe into the 00:52:44.99\00:52:48.20 storehouse, that there may be food in my house." "Bring me that 10%," God says. 00:52:48.20\00:52:51.33 "And I want you to test me in this," says the Lord of Hosts. 00:52:51.33\00:52:54.37 "I want you to put me to the test. 00:52:54.37\00:52:55.94 I want you to put me on the line. 00:52:55.94\00:52:57.47 See if I'll come through and see if I'll not throw open the 00:52:57.47\00:52:59.94 floodgates of Heaven and pour out so much blessing that there 00:52:59.94\00:53:02.58 will not be room enough to store it." 00:53:02.58\00:53:04.25 And most of us stop right there, but he kept going. 00:53:04.25\00:53:06.55 Good move, Gianni. "'I --'" God speaking -- "'I 00:53:06.55\00:53:10.25 will prevent pests from devouring your crops, your cash 00:53:10.25\00:53:13.02 crops. And the vines in your fields 00:53:13.02\00:53:14.89 will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,' says the Lord 00:53:14.89\00:53:17.83 Almighty." Why, "'Then all the nations are 00:53:17.83\00:53:20.20 gonna call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful 00:53:20.20\00:53:23.20 land,' says the Lord God Almighty." 00:53:23.20\00:53:25.67 And he told us, "When I read those words, I said, 'Oh, my. I know what I must do.'" 00:53:25.70\00:53:34.21 He said, "So I began -- When I would get my paycheck -- not a big paycheck, but it would be in 00:53:34.21\00:53:37.81 cash. As soon as I got back to the room, what I would do is I 00:53:37.81\00:53:40.85 would put that cash out, and I would pull off God's 10%. And I would say, 'All right, 00:53:40.85\00:53:44.35 that's for God. That's His, first, right off the top.'" 00:53:44.35\00:53:49.29 And he said, "And I started returning God's tithe. And then a few weeks later, it 00:53:49.29\00:53:53.53 suddenly hit me. Lookit, if I could do that --" And this is 00:53:53.53\00:53:56.77 the genius of it. "If I could do that for God's tithe, I bet you I could do that for food, 00:53:56.77\00:54:02.54 clothing, whatever." So, he -- next paycheck, cash, he puts it over here. "All right. 00:54:02.54\00:54:06.84 I put a little bit for food, put a little bit for clothing, some 00:54:06.84\00:54:11.35 needs." Psch. "And guess what?" he went on. "By faithfully 00:54:11.35\00:54:17.92 setting aside what belongs to God, I developed the ability to budget my finances. 00:54:17.92\00:54:22.89 And I set aside -- For every need I had, I set aside a little bit of cash, and slowly but 00:54:22.89\00:54:33.80 surely --" No, I'm telling you what, he's living evidence. 00:54:33.80\00:54:37.27 He stood right here and said, "Slowly but surely, my debt went 00:54:37.27\00:54:43.68 down, down, down." Now, ladies and gentlemen, I want you to please note that God did not 00:54:43.68\00:54:48.85 send him a mystery check of $5,000 from some pen pal somewhere to dig him out of that 00:54:48.85\00:54:52.69 hole. God said, "No, you got a bright mind. You partner with 00:54:52.69\00:54:58.06 me. You learn the discipline of setting my tithe aside, and then you begin to let it spread into 00:54:58.06\00:55:03.47 the rest of your financial management as a 21-year-old or a 20-year-old or an 18-year-old. 00:55:03.47\00:55:08.70 Doesn't matter to me. We'll do it together, you and me." 00:55:08.70\00:55:14.01 What did Jesus say a moment ago? Put the words on the screen again for us -- "Seek first the 00:55:14.01\00:55:21.65 Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these other things that you want, you 00:55:21.65\00:55:25.52 just got to have, the other things that you need -- you will 00:55:25.52\00:55:30.36 have them all." Isn't that cool? I mean, I heard the guy. He was standing right here. 00:55:30.36\00:55:37.77 Wow. You see, it's true. Jot it down -- action step 00:55:37.77\00:55:40.74 number seven. This is it. Number seven -- when you make 00:55:40.74\00:55:44.67 God first, He will make it last and last and last." But you got 00:55:44.67\00:55:55.02 to make him numero uno. 00:55:55.02\00:55:57.09 You got to make him ichiban. You make Him first. 00:55:57.12\00:56:02.52 "I'll take care of you, boy. Hey, girl, I'll take care of 00:56:02.52\00:56:06.73 you. Sir, with that heavy 00:56:06.73\00:56:10.50 indebtedness that you and your family are carrying, I'll take 00:56:10.50\00:56:14.37 care of you. You make me first, and I will 00:56:14.37\00:56:19.11 make it last. Test me. Try me. 00:56:19.11\00:56:24.35 I'm the closest friend you have, and I'll take care of you." Isn't that wonderful? 00:56:24.38\00:56:29.95 Wow. Because when you make God first, He really does make it 00:56:29.95\00:56:33.36 last and last and last. No matter how indebted you are right now -- I don't care the 00:56:33.36\00:56:36.56 cause of your indebtedness -- it does not matter -- when you make God first, He will make it last. 00:56:36.56\00:56:41.33 And listen to this. He will not only make it last. It gets even 00:56:41.33\00:56:44.77 better than this. He will get you out, and He will set you free if you make Him first. 00:56:44.77\00:56:51.91 So make Him first. That's the echo from the empty tomb today 00:56:51.91\00:57:00.65 -- "Make me first, and I'll take care of you. Until I return, I'll take care of you." 00:57:00.65\00:57:06.19 Amen. Yeah. Then they remembered Jesus' 00:57:06.19\00:57:10.53 words. "We got it." 00:57:10.53\00:57:12.16 >> I want to take an extra moment to thank you for joining 00:57:16.40\00:57:18.47 us in worship today.
