00:26:53.91\00:26:56.64 You're not alone, 00:26:56.68\00:26:58.01 what you just said has been echoed 00:26:58.05\00:26:59.68 by thousands across this country right now. 00:26:59.71\00:27:02.48 Take the Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, 00:27:02.52\00:27:05.39 Charles Duhigg, 00:27:05.42\00:27:08.39 wrote a piece in January, 00:27:08.42\00:27:09.76 my friend Milkie Panaise spotted and send it to me, 00:27:09.79\00:27:12.49 oh, my. 00:27:12.53\00:27:14.26 I want to share, this is a story number two now. 00:27:14.30\00:27:16.10 I want to share a few lines from that piece. 00:27:16.13\00:27:19.63 Here's how it begins. 00:27:19.67\00:27:21.00 My first charmed week as a student 00:27:21.04\00:27:24.41 at Harvard Business School turns out. 00:27:24.44\00:27:27.21 Enrolled at Harvard University, he's an MBA student. 00:27:27.24\00:27:31.81 He goes to their 15th year class reunion 00:27:31.85\00:27:34.98 and now is going to write about that reunion. 00:27:35.02\00:27:37.55 Okay. 00:27:37.59\00:27:38.92 But anyway, my first week as a student 00:27:38.95\00:27:40.29 at Harvard Business School late in the summer of 2001, 00:27:40.32\00:27:42.36 it felt like a halcyon time for capitalism. 00:27:42.39\00:27:44.83 At the time for the 895 of us first yearers, 00:27:44.86\00:27:49.00 preparing ourselves for business moguldom, 00:27:49.03\00:27:51.70 what really excited us was our good luck. 00:27:51.73\00:27:54.34 A Harvard MBA seemed like a winning lottery ticket, 00:27:54.37\00:27:57.87 a gilded highway to world changing influence, 00:27:57.91\00:27:59.97 fantastic wealth, 00:28:00.01\00:28:01.58 and if those self-satisfied portraits 00:28:01.61\00:28:03.81 that lined the hallways were any indication, 00:28:03.85\00:28:06.78 a lifetime of deeply meaningful work. 00:28:06.82\00:28:09.62 Yeah! 00:28:09.65\00:28:11.75 So it came as a bit of a shock. 00:28:11.79\00:28:13.46 Here we go. 00:28:13.49\00:28:14.92 When I attended my 15th reunion last summer, just last summer 00:28:14.96\00:28:18.26 to learn how many of my former classmates 00:28:18.29\00:28:20.46 weren't enjoyed, or enjoyed, 00:28:20.50\00:28:23.03 enjoying their professional lives. 00:28:23.06\00:28:24.93 In fact, they were miserable. 00:28:24.97\00:28:26.40 I heard about one fellow alum who had run a large hedge fund 00:28:26.43\00:28:29.47 until being sued by investors 00:28:29.50\00:28:30.94 who also happened to be the fund manager's relatives. 00:28:30.97\00:28:34.81 Another person had risen to a senior role 00:28:34.84\00:28:36.64 inside one of the nation's most prestigious companies 00:28:36.68\00:28:40.12 before being savagely pushed out by corporate politics. 00:28:40.15\00:28:45.22 Another had learned in the maternity ward 00:28:45.25\00:28:47.72 that her firm was being stolen by a conniving partner. 00:28:47.76\00:28:52.59 Now look at, those are extreme examples. 00:28:52.63\00:28:53.96 Of course, most of us were living relatively normal, 00:28:54.00\00:28:56.87 basically content lines. 00:28:56.90\00:28:58.37 But even among my more sanguine classmates, 00:28:58.40\00:29:01.70 there was a lingering sense of professional disappointment. 00:29:01.74\00:29:05.07 They talked about missed promotions, 00:29:05.11\00:29:07.11 disaffected children, 00:29:07.14\00:29:08.81 billable hours in divorce court. 00:29:08.84\00:29:11.58 They complained about jobs that were unfulfilling, 00:29:11.61\00:29:13.82 tedious or just plain bad. 00:29:13.85\00:29:15.58 One classmate described 00:29:15.62\00:29:17.65 having to invest $5 million a day 00:29:17.69\00:29:19.82 which didn't sound terrible, until he explained 00:29:19.85\00:29:22.19 that if he put only $4 million to work on Monday, 00:29:22.22\00:29:25.39 he had to scramble to place $6 million on Tuesday, 00:29:25.43\00:29:29.73 and his co-workers 00:29:29.76\00:29:31.10 were constantly undermining one another 00:29:31.13\00:29:32.87 in search of the next promotion. 00:29:32.90\00:29:34.24 It was insanely stressful work, 00:29:34.27\00:29:36.54 done among people he didn't particularly like. 00:29:36.57\00:29:40.48 He earned about $1.2 million a year 00:29:40.51\00:29:44.05 and hated going to the office. 00:29:44.08\00:29:49.35 "I feel like I'm wasting my life," he told me. 00:29:49.38\00:29:51.62 "When I die, is anyone going to care 00:29:51.65\00:29:54.02 that I earned an extra percentage point of return? 00:29:54.06\00:29:57.36 My work feel so totally meaningless." 00:29:57.39\00:30:01.26 He recognized the incredible privilege 00:30:01.30\00:30:02.83 of his pay and status, but his anguish seemed genuine. 00:30:02.86\00:30:06.23 He goes on, 00:30:06.27\00:30:08.30 "If you spend 12 hours a day doing work you hate, 00:30:08.34\00:30:10.74 at some point it doesn't matter what your paycheck says," 00:30:10.77\00:30:14.34 he told me. 00:30:14.38\00:30:18.18 Charles Duhigg commenting, 00:30:18.21\00:30:20.25 "There's no magic salary 00:30:20.28\00:30:21.62 at which a bad job becomes good. 00:30:21.65\00:30:23.18 He had received an offer to start-up, 00:30:23.22\00:30:25.25 and he would have loved to take it, 00:30:25.29\00:30:26.62 but it paid half as much, 00:30:26.65\00:30:28.06 and he felt locked into a lifestyle 00:30:28.09\00:30:29.79 that made this pay cut impossible. 00:30:29.82\00:30:31.59 "My wife laughed when I told her about it," 00:30:31.63\00:30:34.60 he said to me. 00:30:34.63\00:30:36.77 And the story, title of the piece. 00:30:36.80\00:30:39.60 Here it is, wealthy, successful, and miserable. 00:30:39.63\00:30:45.61 So which one is it if I were rich man, 00:30:45.64\00:30:51.01 or wealthy, successful, and miserable. 00:30:51.05\00:30:55.95 Story number three. 00:30:55.98\00:30:57.32 Once upon a time, there was a man 00:30:57.35\00:30:58.69 who did very well with his investments. 00:30:58.72\00:31:02.52 Jesus told a story about him. 00:31:02.56\00:31:04.19 And we're going to track this story 00:31:04.23\00:31:05.59 because it's one of those wow stories. 00:31:05.63\00:31:07.36 Open your Bible with me 00:31:07.40\00:31:08.73 to the Gospel of Luke Chapter 12. 00:31:08.76\00:31:10.10 Luke Chapter 12. 00:31:10.13\00:31:14.60 Jesus' story about this investor, 00:31:14.64\00:31:17.84 agrarian investor. 00:31:17.87\00:31:20.31 Here we go, Luke Chapter 12. 00:31:20.34\00:31:21.68 You don't have a Bible, 00:31:21.71\00:31:23.04 it's too dark where you're sitting, 00:31:23.08\00:31:24.41 that'll be on the screen. 00:31:24.45\00:31:25.78 These lights, is it. 00:31:25.81\00:31:30.15 This is the next four weeks. 00:31:30.19\00:31:33.05 And then we move out. 00:31:33.09\00:31:35.39 We'll be back. 00:31:35.42\00:31:36.76 We'll be back at the end of summer, 00:31:36.79\00:31:38.13 you gonna love it when you come back. 00:31:38.16\00:31:39.86 All right, this is Luke Chapter 12. 00:31:39.89\00:31:41.40 I'm in the NIV, did I tell you that, verse 16. 00:31:41.43\00:31:43.57 "And Jesus told them this parable:" 00:31:43.60\00:31:45.40 They're the words on the screen. 00:31:45.43\00:31:46.77 "The ground of a certain rich man 00:31:46.80\00:31:49.34 yielded an abundant harvest." 00:31:49.37\00:31:52.54 Wow! 00:31:52.57\00:31:54.11 You should have seen it. 00:31:54.14\00:31:55.48 That huge green John Deere Combine 00:31:55.51\00:31:59.05 is just chewing up the back 40 like it's going out of style. 00:31:59.08\00:32:03.42 And every truck he could ret 00:32:03.45\00:32:05.12 is pulling under that huge spout 00:32:05.15\00:32:07.52 that is shooting down yellow gold, green. 00:32:07.56\00:32:12.93 Next truck, please. Here's the good news. 00:45:54.25\00:45:56.15 "We look a lot like God when we do it." 00:45:56.18\00:45:58.02 John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He did" what? 00:45:58.05\00:46:01.02 "That He gave." 00:46:01.06\00:46:02.76 We look like God when we do it. 00:46:02.79\00:46:04.23 When you give, keep your pen moving, 00:46:04.26\00:46:06.53 you defy the fear. 00:46:06.56\00:46:08.26 And we all have this fear 00:46:08.30\00:46:09.63 that you won't have enough someday. 00:46:09.66\00:46:11.50 When you come to retirement, I'm not gonna have enough. 00:46:11.53\00:46:13.90 When you come to getting out of college, 00:46:13.94\00:46:15.57 I'm not gonna have enough. 00:46:15.60\00:46:16.94 When you come to having a baby, I'm not gonna have enough. 00:46:16.97\00:46:19.71 That's the fear that keeps needling us. 00:46:19.74\00:46:24.21 Don't give, don't give, hey, on girl, 00:46:24.25\00:46:26.15 boy, hang on to this, you're going to need this. 00:46:26.18\00:46:29.75 When you give, you defy the fear 00:46:29.78\00:46:32.35 that you won't have enough, you insult greed. 00:46:32.39\00:46:35.29 There's that dirty word, "You insult greed, the impulse 00:46:35.32\00:46:38.79 to acquire or possess more than one needs or deserves. 00:46:38.83\00:46:42.96 If you really believe that God owns it all 00:46:43.00\00:46:45.13 and then He is your source and provider, 00:46:45.17\00:46:47.97 giving will be a simple matter. 00:46:48.00\00:46:50.11 The arena of giving is the only place 00:46:50.14\00:46:52.97 where exactly what's going on in Dwight's heart 00:46:53.01\00:46:55.61 is being revealed." 00:46:55.64\00:46:56.98 God says to Gabriel, 00:46:57.01\00:46:58.35 "Hey, Gabriel, find out how much the boys given, huh? 00:46:58.38\00:47:00.55 And then tell me." 00:47:00.58\00:47:02.75 That number that he comes up with will tell me 00:47:02.78\00:47:05.79 the spiritual condition of Dwight's heart. 00:47:05.82\00:47:10.13 I'm sorry, but it's red hot. 00:47:10.16\00:47:13.16 And inst Dwight because the nerve 00:47:13.19\00:47:15.33 from giving go straight to your heart. 00:47:15.36\00:47:20.40 It's a very sensitive nerve. 00:47:20.44\00:47:22.60 Oh, but the last line is even better. 00:47:22.64\00:47:24.21 "According to Jesus, 00:47:24.24\00:47:26.51 giving keeps your heart in motion toward God, 00:47:26.54\00:47:29.81 and away from material things. 00:47:29.84\00:47:31.41 Your heart will follow the direction of your giving." 00:47:31.45\00:47:35.28 That's why the headline and the tagline 00:47:35.32\00:47:37.02 of this parable when you join them together, 00:47:37.05\00:47:38.65 they compose, give, give. 00:47:38.69\00:47:43.99 Please give Jesus says. 00:47:44.03\00:47:48.06 And when Jesus breaths just a few moments 00:47:48.10\00:47:49.80 after He ends this little story. 00:47:49.83\00:47:52.97 Profoundly makes the point 00:47:53.00\00:47:54.34 and this is so tender, I love this. 00:47:54.37\00:47:55.70 Just drop down. Now, he's talking. 00:47:55.74\00:47:57.07 Verse 22 says, He's only talking to His disciples. 00:47:57.11\00:47:59.67 It's just the people that are really close to Him. 00:47:59.71\00:48:01.91 All right, so that'd be you and me. 00:48:01.94\00:48:03.75 Luke 12:32, 00:48:03.78\00:48:06.21 "Do not be afraid, little flock," 00:48:06.25\00:48:08.12 Oh, I love that. 00:52:18.40\00:52:19.73 We can. 00:52:19.77\00:52:21.74 People say, "Dwight, why do you even deal 00:52:21.77\00:52:23.37 with the subject of giving? 00:52:23.41\00:52:24.74 Do you know that of all the subjects, 00:52:24.77\00:52:26.78 all the subjects that Jesus taught on, 00:52:26.81\00:52:28.84 this is the most predominant subject, 00:52:28.88\00:52:32.31 hands down or anything else. 00:52:32.35\00:52:33.68 He keeps going back to giving 00:52:33.72\00:52:35.05 and giving, and giving, and giving. 00:52:35.08\00:52:36.42 Why?
