What's a covered 00:13:57.40\00:14:07.28 wagon? A wagon that has a sort of thing -- that's it. It this 00:14:07.28\00:14:11.15 kind of a roundish cover. And the pioneers who were moving from the East to the West would 00:14:11.15\00:14:16.45 get in their covered wagons. They said, "Let's go west. Let's find land out there." 00:14:16.45\00:14:21.19 And so, Mother and Father and the children and a few pets and a chicken or two are in, crowded 00:14:21.19\00:14:25.59 into that little covered wagon and rolling over the yellow prairie plains -- somewhere in 00:14:25.59\00:14:35.84 Nebraska we'd say today. "Okay, kids, out. Out, out, out, out. 00:14:35.84\00:14:40.14 Tonight, we're gonna camp right here. The river's back there, 00:14:40.14\00:14:42.68 but let's camp right here. And the children all helped set up 00:14:42.68\00:14:45.81 camp. Mother got the -- Father got the little fire going. Mother cooked up supper. 00:14:45.81\00:14:49.32 Everybody went to bed, slept so beautifully under the stars that 00:14:49.32\00:14:52.52 night. Next morning, Father gets up, and he says, "Hmm." He's looking to the west. 00:14:52.52\00:14:56.79 "Hmm. I see a cloud. I wonder if this is a dust storm. 00:14:56.79\00:15:03.10 Is the wind so strong that it's kicking up the dry dust? Let me 00:15:03.10\00:15:07.34 see. Children, I don't know. Mother, we may need to be 00:15:07.34\00:15:09.97 careful here. I'm keeping my eye on it. Let's go and have breakfast right now." 00:15:09.97\00:15:12.54 And Father kept his eye on it. And as it got closer, he said, "No, no, no, no, no, no! 00:15:12.54\00:15:15.61 That is not a dust storm. I can tell it's smoke. It's a 00:15:15.61\00:15:23.39 wildfire... and it's coming this way! All right, kids, quick, quick, quick, quick -- grab the 00:15:23.39\00:15:27.26 chickens. Grab the -- all the camping stuff in the wagon. 00:15:27.26\00:15:29.56 We'll go back to the river. We'll get on the other side of 00:15:29.56\00:15:32.13 the river. The fire will not be able to reach us that way. Quick, quick, quick! 00:15:32.13\00:15:34.56 We don't have time!" Everybody climbed in the covered wagon. 00:15:34.56\00:15:37.13 "Yo, go!" The horse began to move that heavy wagon. 00:15:37.13\00:15:40.07 They turned around, got to the river. Their kids are looking 00:15:40.07\00:15:42.94 back. "It's getting closer, Dad! It's getting closer!" Got across 00:15:42.94\00:15:46.54 the river. [ Sighs, chuckles ] "We made it." And they stood on 00:15:46.54\00:15:51.01 this side of the river, and they watched as that fire came roaring right up to the dry 00:15:51.01\00:15:56.58 prairie grass, right to the river, and then the fire went out. At the end of the day, just 00:15:56.58\00:16:01.36 a few little wispy trails of smoke going up. Father says, "I 00:16:01.36\00:16:05.66 think it's safe. Let's start moving this way again. We'll go back to where we camped 00:16:05.66\00:16:09.66 last night." And when they got back, everything was gone -- 00:16:09.66\00:16:14.40 just gone. "Wait a minute. Where is the chicken?" 00:16:14.40\00:16:22.98 Everybody, in their scramble to get into the covered wagon, forgot the chicken and her 00:16:22.98\00:16:26.78 chickies. "Oh, I hope she got away. Oh, I hope she got away," 00:16:26.78\00:16:31.22 Father said, as he walked around. And he noticed a hump 00:16:31.22\00:16:35.22 there with a stick -- a little something sticking up in the ground. And he touched it with a 00:16:35.22\00:16:38.73 stick. He gently knocked it over, and... "Peep, peep, peep, 00:16:38.73\00:16:42.50 peep, peep!" Their three little chickies ran out from under that hump of ash. And suddenly, 00:16:42.50\00:16:50.71 Father realized, "Boy!" The children gathered around with 00:16:50.71\00:16:54.31 Father and Mother. The chickies made it through the fire. Do you 00:16:54.31\00:16:58.75 know why? Because their mother gathered the little chickies under her wing, and she just 00:16:58.75\00:17:04.85 held them tight and put her head over. And the fire roared over them. Mother gave her life to 00:17:04.85\00:17:12.59 save those little chickies, kind of like what Jesus did, didn't He? Didn't He stretch out His 00:17:12.59\00:17:20.17 arms on the cross? Didn't He stretch out His arms and say, "Boys and girls, all 00:17:20.17\00:17:24.04 the boys and girls in the world, come to me. Come, come. 00:17:24.04\00:17:25.87 Come under my wings. I'm gonna give my life so that you won't have to die forever. 00:17:25.87\00:17:34.48 And the fire fell on Jesus, not on us. Oh, I'm so grateful that 00:17:34.48\00:17:41.62 Jesus was willing to give His life up. That little mother hen could have flown away and said, 00:17:41.62\00:17:45.66 "You chickies are on your own. I'm flying to safety." Oh, no. 00:17:45.66\00:17:50.00 Oh, no. God gathers his little children. "Stay close to me. Stay under my wing, 00:17:50.00\00:17:55.57 and I will save you." I just don't have it 00:25:04.70\00:25:08.97 written down. Matthew chapter 23. Oh, the deep emotion and 00:25:08.97\00:25:17.28 pathos, as we say in American Greek -- the pathos of Christ Himself. Pick it up in verse 37. 00:25:17.28\00:25:22.35 Matthew 23:37. "'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem...'" You can feel it. 00:25:22.35\00:25:31.73 "'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how 00:25:31.73\00:25:37.27 often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her 00:25:37.27\00:25:42.60 wings, and you were not willing.'" There it is -- the 00:25:42.60\00:25:49.54 bird species for today. The Lord Himself chooses the hen, the 00:25:49.54\00:25:55.65 mother chicken, to describe His heartbroken love not only for Jerusalem, but for, 00:25:55.65\00:26:00.56 particularly, the leadership of Jerusalem, who have been saying, "No, no, no, no. No, no, no." 00:26:00.56\00:26:06.76 Today, He gets it. Today, He says, "I know what you're saying 00:26:06.76\00:26:11.70 to me." "Hey, listen, Rabbi, which part of the 'no' don't you 00:26:11.70\00:26:14.34 understand -- the 'n' or the 'o'?" He's getting it. This is 00:26:14.34\00:26:20.74 the final "no." But unrequited love does not soon relinquish its passion. "'O Jerusalem, 00:26:20.74\00:26:31.59 Jerusalem, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her 00:26:31.59\00:26:35.69 chicks under her wings, but you would not." Mother hen. 00:26:35.69\00:26:40.96 I grew up with chickens in Japan. When we were living in 00:26:40.96\00:26:44.17 the countryside, of course, chickens everywhere. In the city, once in a while, 00:26:44.17\00:26:46.17 you'd hear a cock-a-doodle-doo. But in Japan... In fact, our pet 00:26:46.17\00:26:53.61 cat Tipper -- God bless him -- with all of his docile purring that we lived with through the 00:26:53.61\00:27:01.18 years, Tipper, in his old age, somehow... [ Chuckles ] We don't know what happened, 00:27:01.18\00:27:05.49 but he killed a nearby Japanese farmer's chicken and then had the temerity to drop the carcass 00:27:05.49\00:27:10.96 on our front door. [ Breathes sharply ] When Tipper did it the 00:27:10.96\00:27:16.16 second time, my parents -- American missionaries, very sensitive to P.R. -- 00:27:16.16\00:27:21.40 said, "The cat has got to go." And with great wailing and tears, we climbed into our 00:27:21.40\00:27:27.68 little Japanese car and drove to a place we'd never driven before, miles away, because we 00:27:27.68\00:27:32.18 found a veterinarian who agreed he would euthanize Tipper. Wailing and crying all the way 00:27:32.18\00:27:38.19 back home. That was it. Goodbye, Tipper. 00:27:38.19\00:27:42.16 Which made all the more dramatic, by the way, that moment when my mother, who's 00:27:42.16\00:27:46.59 been teaching some missionary kids piano... She's been teaching them piano, 00:27:46.59\00:27:50.03 and so she's gonna have a little recital for all the missionary kids in our little living room 00:27:50.03\00:27:54.10 with all the parents and the children crowded. Tipper knew 00:27:54.10\00:28:00.31 drama. And at that moment, the cat, muddied and bedraggled, two 00:28:00.31\00:28:09.65 weeks later... comes stumbling into the room, and, of course, the place went berserk. 00:28:09.65\00:28:16.86 And, of course, we kept him. Our new chicken-killing runaway come 00:28:16.86\00:28:25.60 home hero, Tipper. I mean, how did he find the way? We had never been that way. These 00:28:25.60\00:28:32.21 creatures. "'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem...'" You can sense the heartache. "'...how often I have 00:28:32.21\00:28:39.65 longed to gather you like a hen gathers her little chickies. I've longed to just gather you 00:28:39.65\00:28:42.88 close to me, but you would not come.'" But why a hen? 00:28:42.88\00:28:48.26 Why'd he pick the metaphor hen? On the eve of his own death, 00:28:48.26\00:28:52.33 hen. Perhaps because, you know, that little imagery, and because the moment we say "mother hen 00:28:52.33\00:28:56.10 and little yellow chickies," we can all see it. Ch-ch-ch! 00:28:56.10\00:28:58.13 They're all running around. "Come on!" [ Clucking ] 00:28:58.13\00:29:00.74 And they all come under -- we know. Maybe that's why. 00:29:00.74\00:29:03.91 Perhaps, as Craig Keener observes in his commentary -- 00:29:03.91\00:29:08.18 put his words on the screen -- perhaps this is the reason. 00:29:08.18\00:29:10.58 "Jewish tradition claimed that Jewish people were under God's 00:29:10.58\00:29:12.91 wings, and when a Jewish person converted" a neighbor, 00:29:12.91\00:29:15.58 a Gentile neighbor, okay? So you're witnessing to your 00:29:15.58\00:29:17.99 neighbor. And he converted a Gentile 00:29:17.99\00:29:19.69 neighbor... "...he or she brought that Gentile 'under the 00:29:19.69\00:29:24.23 wings of God's presence.'" You could hardly have a more tender and poignant expression 00:29:24.23\00:29:29.16 of solicitude. One commentator says you -- nothing exceeds this 00:29:29.16\00:29:34.14 from Jesus' lips. "Desire of Ages" describes this moment when 00:29:34.14\00:29:37.81 he speaks these words. "Desire of Ages" on the screen. By the way, there is a study 00:29:37.81\00:29:40.24 guide today. You'll take all these quotes home. 00:29:40.24\00:29:42.14 "Desire of Ages" on the screen... 00:29:42.14\00:29:44.78 You can just feel His heart pounding. 00:29:51.02\00:29:53.79 This is it -- one last shot. 00:29:53.79\00:29:57.33 Keep reading. "In a voice choked by deep 00:29:57.86\00:30:00.93 anguish of heart and bitter tears He exclaimed, 00:30:00.93\00:30:02.90 'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, 00:30:02.90\00:30:05.90 and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often I would I 00:30:05.90\00:30:08.94 have gathered thy children together, even as a hen 00:30:08.94\00:30:10.97 gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!'" 00:30:10.97\00:30:14.34 Keep reading. "This is the separation 00:30:14.34\00:30:16.81 struggle. 00:30:16.81\00:30:18.05 We get it. 00:30:27.59\00:30:29.56 We get it. The leadership of this faith community says, "You 00:30:29.72\00:30:34.76 don't want us. You don't want me. I got it." 00:30:34.76\00:30:40.17 Ohh. This isn't just a mother hen anguishing over her chicks that refuse to come running to 00:30:40.17\00:30:44.87 her for safety and protection. No, no, no, no. This is a mother 00:30:44.87\00:30:47.91 hen who knows that she is gonna give her life for those chicks that will not come running. 00:30:47.91\00:30:52.48 She will give his -- her life. And the ultimate sacrifice in 00:30:52.48\00:30:58.59 death. Jesus declares, "I am the mother hen." Isn't that amazing? 00:30:58.59\00:31:06.16 "I am the mother hen." This isn't a chickening out of the Savior of the World. 00:31:06.16\00:31:11.77 In fact, He knows that there is a chicken killing coming very soon, and He'll be the chicken. 00:31:11.77\00:31:20.11 He's not chickening out. Through this very maternal image -- and, 00:31:20.11\00:31:25.68 by the way, get this -- this is as female as you can get with imagery. And God takes this 00:31:25.68\00:31:34.29 female imagery, and He says, "That's me. I am the mother 00:31:34.29\00:31:40.86 hen." So, this profound maternal imagery -- the poignant, the 00:31:40.86\00:31:50.67 strong... refusing almost to let go of the love of God. There it 00:31:50.67\00:31:56.81 is. We feel it. We sense it. "How often I have longed to 00:31:56.81\00:32:03.35 gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were 00:32:03.35\00:32:08.76 not willing.'" [ Chuckles ] Come on, guys. We're talking about -- 00:32:08.76\00:32:12.73 You want to talk about -- You want to talk about a posture of 00:32:12.73\00:32:15.13 protection? How could you be safer than under your mommy's wings? How could you be safer? 00:32:15.13\00:32:19.60 You want to talk about a posture of intimacy? How could you be 00:32:19.60\00:32:23.04 closer to your mother than under her wings? The child knows when she's with her mother. 00:32:23.04\00:32:31.51 We just had our two little granddaughters with us from Oregon for eight days. 00:32:31.51\00:32:37.02 Just put them on a plane yesterday, along with their 00:32:37.02\00:32:40.92 mother and father. We offered to keep the kids. I mean, "Kirk and Chelsea, you can go home. 00:32:40.92\00:32:44.69 Can we keep Ella and...?" But it was wonderful to have these two little girls running 00:32:44.69\00:32:50.77 around our house. And you know what? When little 4-month 00:32:50.77\00:32:56.94 Isabelle -- We took everybody -- We took everybody on the train -- you got to do this -- on the 00:32:56.94\00:33:00.04 train to Shedd Aquarium this last week, okay? So, Isabelle's 00:33:00.04\00:33:03.61 going in what's called a Snuggie. And you mothers know what a Snuggie is, 'cause you 00:33:03.61\00:33:06.55 wear it on the front. And she is bound to her mother's breast and 00:33:06.55\00:33:13.42 heart. That little girl slept for five hours in that Snuggie while we walked all the way 00:33:13.42\00:33:17.66 through Shedd Aquarium and had lunch. You know why she slept? You can't get any closer. 00:33:17.66\00:33:24.17 You can't get any closer than that to your mommy. Whenever the 00:33:24.17\00:33:29.50 girls called, they weren't calling, "Daddy," or, "Papa!" When they get up in the middle 00:33:29.50\00:33:33.41 of the night, I could hear them -- "Mommy!" They say -- true 00:33:33.41\00:33:38.81 story -- they say that, after these raging, bloody battles in the Civil War, often, in the 00:33:38.81\00:33:46.92 night, with the corpses left, you could hear a cry of a young boy calling for his mother. 00:33:46.92\00:33:55.93 "Mother! Mother!" What is there about a bond between a mother 00:33:55.93\00:34:03.04 and a child? It's not between a dad and a child. Jesus, on the 00:34:03.04\00:34:09.08 eve of His death, says, "I am the mother hen. I am the one that has desperately sought to 00:34:09.08\00:34:17.02 draw you near while there is still time." Wow. When Jesus 00:34:17.02\00:34:29.60 uses that "I am the hen" metaphor, I'll just promise you that He was thinking of a psalm. 00:34:29.60\00:34:37.71 In fact, I assure you He memorized the psalm at His 00:34:37.71\00:34:42.11 mother's knee. The reason I know that is because the devil memorized the same psalm, and if 00:34:42.11\00:34:46.75 the devil memorized the psalm and the Lord Jesus memorized the psalm, there must be something 00:34:46.75\00:34:52.19 hugely potent in that psalm. And I'm gonna show you what the devil does when he handles 00:34:52.19\00:34:57.76 the psalm. Open your Bible now. We were in the New Testament. 00:34:57.76\00:35:00.23 We go back to the Old. We're gonna end in Psalm 91. This is the great protection 00:35:00.23\00:35:04.23 psalm. This is the psalm that says, "When the Earth is facing 00:35:04.23\00:35:07.44 its last plagues, I will be there for you, and you will be 00:35:07.44\00:35:12.97 safe with me." This is that psalm. My mother -- God bless her -- oh, she worked on us 00:35:12.97\00:35:19.31 three kids every Friday night to memorize Psalm 91. Just, "Kids, 00:35:19.31\00:35:23.45 get it down." Psalm 91. Karen and I have spent years working on trying to memorize 00:35:23.45\00:35:27.02 that psalm in the King James English. Psalm 91. 00:35:27.02\00:35:32.26 It's written for a community destined for apocalyptic 00:35:32.26\00:35:36.46 meltdown. Now, listen -- apocalyptic meltdown. Now, I'm watching and praying -- 00:35:36.46\00:35:41.10 sh-sh-sh -- I'm watching and praying for what's going on 00:35:41.10\00:35:45.91 right now. I was praying for the success of that U.S.-North Korea summit that our President 00:35:45.91\00:35:50.88 arranged a few days ago. I was praying for its success. And if you read my blog, you'll 00:35:50.88\00:35:54.15 know why I was praying. I'm not going into that now. But I know and you know, in our 00:35:54.15\00:36:00.22 heart of hearts, that the day is coming when what occurs on Earth will be beyond human reversal. 00:36:00.22\00:36:08.26 It will be the end game, right? Yeah. You know that. I know 00:36:08.26\00:36:13.97 that. It'll be like what Paul was trying to describe. And these are -- these words are 00:36:13.97\00:36:18.31 really the setting for Psalm 91. Let's put Paul on the screen. 00:36:18.31\00:36:20.74 1 Thessalonians 5:3. "For when they say, 'Peace and 00:36:20.91\00:36:23.75 safety!'" Hey, we got a breakthrough. 00:36:23.75\00:36:25.41 We got it done. "When they say, 'Peace and 00:36:25.41\00:36:27.78 safety!' then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains 00:36:27.78\00:36:30.62 upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape." 00:36:30.62\00:36:33.12 We know that that day is coming. Psalm 91 is for that day. Okay? 00:36:33.29\00:36:40.30 Let's look at it now. Psalm 91. 00:36:40.30\00:36:45.83 Here we go. Verse 1. "Whoever --" this is the NIV, of 00:36:46.00\00:36:48.57 course. 00:36:48.57\00:36:49.74 What you don't know in reading it in the English is that the psalmist has inserted right here 00:36:58.08\00:37:03.62 in the opening salvo four names for God. So we had to memorize 00:37:03.62\00:37:08.82 this in the -- we had to memorize this in the King James. "He that dwelleth in the secret 00:37:08.82\00:37:12.73 place of the Most High." "Most High" is "Elyon" in the Hebrew. 00:37:12.73\00:37:16.77 "Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." "Almighty" is 00:37:16.77\00:37:20.47 "Shaddai" in the Hebrew. "I will say of the Lord..." It's 00:37:20.47\00:37:24.07 "Yahweh." "I will say of the Lord" -- the great covenant-keeping Creator God. 00:37:24.07\00:37:26.84 ""I will say of the Lord, my refuge and my fortress: my God" 00:37:26.84\00:37:32.85 -- "Elohim" -- "my God in whom I trust." Four names. Whatever happens in this psalm 00:37:32.85\00:37:37.72 comes from the four-named God, singular. Wow. 00:37:37.72\00:37:44.73 Now, I love the way one writer puts it -- "God's commandment -- 00:37:44.73\00:37:48.30 keeping people. Stand under the broad shield of omnipotence in this psalm." This is good. 00:37:48.30\00:37:54.20 Now you're ready for verse 3. The four-named God -- here he 00:37:54.20\00:37:59.04 goes now -- speaking of Him, verse 3 -- "Surely he" -- this 00:37:59.04\00:38:03.04 four-named God -- "will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence." 00:38:03.04\00:38:10.49 You know, it's very interesting -- to me, anyway -- the new 00:38:10.49\00:38:14.36 translations -- why they hang onto this very old King James Shakespearean word "fowler." 00:38:14.36\00:38:18.29 Who ever uses the word "fowler" today? We use the word "bird 00:38:18.29\00:38:22.33 hunter" -- two words. But all the translations, the new ones -- they all hang on to 00:38:22.33\00:38:26.33 "fowler." This isn't the only place it appears. 00:38:26.33\00:38:29.24 Let me put another one on the screen for you. Psalm -- what is 00:38:29.24\00:38:31.87 this? -- Psalm 124:7 -- "We have escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare has 00:38:31.87\00:38:38.38 been broken, and we" -- little birdies -- "have escaped." 00:38:38.38\00:38:42.88 So, obviously, the fowler's a bird hunter, but what were the 00:38:43.05\00:38:46.69 ancient hunters like? I put a little paragraph from a 00:38:46.69\00:38:48.92 Bible dictionary in your notes. Don't look at it now. 00:38:48.92\00:38:50.96 But a fowler was a professional bird hunter before the day of 00:38:50.96\00:38:56.60 firearms. You want to catch a bird -- 00:38:56.60\00:38:59.13 you know -- wsssh! -- you don't do that, no. 00:38:59.13\00:39:01.20 Fowlers used traps. They used nets. 00:39:01.20\00:39:05.41 They used sticks. In fact, they use one stick 00:39:05.41\00:39:08.34 1 1/2 feet along, about like this, about a half inch wide -- 00:39:08.34\00:39:12.28 straight stick. 00:39:12.28\00:39:13.28 And what they would do, particularly if they wanted ground-hugging birds, like 00:39:13.45\00:39:16.92 partridges or pheasants, what they would do is they would take 00:39:16.92\00:39:20.39 this stick. And you know that, when you throw a boomerang, what 00:39:20.39\00:39:22.96 does it do? It goes around. This stick -- they would take it, and 00:39:22.96\00:39:26.73 if you throw it -- Whh-whh-whh-whhh! And they would throw it low, particularly when 00:39:26.73\00:39:30.83 they're -- the birds are racing up a hill. They'll throw it low -- whhh! -- so the stick comes. 00:39:30.83\00:39:35.04 And if somebody comes behind you and you're standing up and they just go like this to you, it'll 00:39:35.04\00:39:39.04 make you feel like a fool, because you're suddenly out of 00:39:39.04\00:39:42.41 control. That's what the stick did. Boom, boom, boom! And the 00:39:42.41\00:39:45.51 birds go down -- come running out of the bush. Everybody grab, grab, grab, grab, grab, grab, 00:39:45.51\00:39:48.65 and they have their birds. That's what a fowler is. So, here's the question -- 00:39:48.65\00:39:52.52 is a fowler good news for a bird or bad news? Answer. Answer. 00:39:52.52\00:39:59.23 Bad. As bad news as the devil himself, and that's exactly 00:39:59.23\00:40:05.07 what's happening here. [ Chuckling ] My, oh, my. So, in Psalm 91 -- Get this -- 00:40:05.07\00:40:10.11 When Psalm 91 declares, "He will save you from the fowler's snare," it immediately 00:40:10.11\00:40:15.44 identifies you as a bird. You are a bird. I am a bird. 00:40:15.44\00:40:20.65 The fowler is you know who -- evil, evil. And "evil" with a 00:40:20.65\00:40:28.19 "d" spells "devil." Devil. That's the fowler -- 00:40:28.19\00:40:32.59 Satan himself. So, number one, Psalm 91 tells us, "Guess what 00:40:32.59\00:40:37.10 -- you're the bird." And, number two, Psalm 91 announces the 00:40:37.10\00:40:40.14 urgently good news that there is a deliverer who can take down any fowler on this planet. 00:40:40.14\00:40:45.07 Somebody can rescue us from the fowler -- good news. [ Chuckles 00:40:45.07\00:40:48.48 ] Great news, I would say. Ah. We are the little chickies. That's Jesus' point. 00:40:48.48\00:40:55.32 That's the psalmist's point. Bad times. 00:40:55.32\00:40:58.62 Put it on the screen, please -- Ecclesiastes 9:12. 00:40:58.79\00:41:02.02 "Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come." 00:41:02.02\00:41:04.06 No, we don't. "As fish are caught in a cruel 00:41:04.06\00:41:07.13 net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by 00:41:07.13\00:41:10.27 evil times that fall unexpectedly unto them." 00:41:10.27\00:41:13.34 Evil times. Trapped. Oh, we know the fowler. Who here has not 00:41:13.50\00:41:19.31 felt the hot breath of the fowler taking his stick, ready to cut your legs out from under 00:41:19.31\00:41:24.08 you? We all know that breath. We know him. "Patriarchs and 00:41:24.08\00:41:28.68 Prophets" on the screen. "The great mass of the world will reject God's mercy," in the 00:41:28.68\00:41:32.59 apocalyptic meltdown, which Psalm 91 is most poignantly, succinctly connected with. 00:41:32.59\00:41:39.89 "The great mass of the world will reject God's mercy, and will be overwhelmed in swift and 00:41:39.89\00:41:43.93 irretrievable ruin. But those who heed the warning shall dwell" -- here it comes, 00:41:43.93\00:41:48.27 Psalm 91 -- "'in the secret place of the Most High,' and 'abide under the shadow of 00:41:48.27\00:41:52.97 the Almighty.'" End quote. But the big question is, how 00:41:52.97\00:41:56.64 will God deliver us? How's He gonna deliver us? Now, here 00:41:56.64\00:42:01.08 comes the psalmist doing something you could not do in freshman composition, because 00:42:01.08\00:42:06.35 the psalmist is gonna do what is a no-no in literary writing, and that is he's gonna instantly mix 00:42:06.35\00:42:13.40 metaphors. So, the first metaphor is, you're the chick. You're the chick, and I'm the 00:42:13.40\00:42:16.46 chick. Second metaphor -- he's gonna turn God into a chick, 00:42:16.46\00:42:21.24 into a mother, into a hen. So you got two metaphors going. Ah, but he's making the point. 00:42:21.24\00:42:29.94 In fact, so that we know this isn't a little slip-up, I want you first to read it here. 00:42:29.94\00:42:36.08 This is verse 3. Read verse 3 again. "Surely he," the 00:42:36.08\00:42:39.02 four-named God, "will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. 00:42:39.02\00:42:41.92 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings" -- speaking of this 00:42:41.92\00:42:46.59 four-named God -- "under his wings you will find refuge..." That feels like a little typo, 00:42:46.59\00:42:51.83 but they didn't really mean his feathers. He has feathers? 00:42:51.83\00:42:55.70 No, it's not a typo. 00:42:55.70\00:42:56.74 Let me show you, just from the Book of Psalms. 00:42:56.91\00:42:58.41 Please put it on the screen. Psalm 17:8-9. 00:42:58.41\00:43:01.08 Under His wings -- there it is. That's not isolated, either. 00:43:08.75\00:43:12.62 Look at Psalm 57:1. 00:43:12.62\00:43:14.89 The world is going to melt down one day, and here is a psalm that says -- Psalm 91 -- here is 00:43:24.77\00:43:30.44 a psalm that declares, "I... will shelter you under my feathers, and I'll save you." 00:43:30.44\00:43:42.28 [ Chuckling ] Wow. Mercy. A mother hen? 00:43:42.28\00:43:49.96 That's precisely Jesus' point. That's precisely... Any way you 00:43:49.96\00:43:54.56 want to slice it, that's His point. It's the point in Matthew 23. It's the point in Psalm 91. 00:43:54.56\00:44:00.34 That's his point. And... [ Clears throat ] 00:44:00.34\00:44:06.04 Excuse me. And the devil knows it. [ Chuckling ] The devil 00:44:06.04\00:44:10.31 knows the point of Psalm 91, which is why the devil does some major surgery -- he, who also 00:44:10.31\00:44:15.95 has memorized Psalm 91, does some major surgery. I want to 00:44:15.95\00:44:18.89 show this to you. This is absolutely unbelievable what he does. Okay, so, picture the 00:44:18.89\00:44:22.66 scene -- 40 days of fasting and praying are over. This is day 00:44:22.66\00:44:27.13 number 40. Standing before us now is this emaciated specimen of humanity. He's all bones -- 00:44:27.13\00:44:33.00 His cheeks are protruding, the bones are. And He's standing 00:44:33.00\00:44:38.21 there, famished. 40 days and nights of prayer are now concluded. And guess what -- 00:44:38.21\00:44:45.45 guess who shows up. Wsssh! This glorious, majestic, 00:44:45.45\00:44:50.52 towering being of light, who looks down at this emaciated soul, and he says, "Oh, I just 00:44:50.52\00:45:00.33 don't understand this. You can't -- You cannot be who, apparently, You think You are." 00:45:00.33\00:45:08.14 I mean, how could You? Look at You! Okay?!" 00:45:08.14\00:45:17.08 By the way, the devil will always come to you on your 40th 00:45:17.08\00:45:21.15 day. I'm telling you the truth. You know what the 40th day is? It's when you're the weakest 00:45:21.15\00:45:24.92 physically. You'll never go 40 days of fasting. 00:45:24.92\00:45:27.29 You can't do it. But it's when you're at your weakest 00:45:27.29\00:45:31.23 physically. That's when the fowler shows up. "I got this thing that's gonna cut your legs 00:45:31.23\00:45:34.76 out. Watch this." Wssshww! That's when he shows up -- when 00:45:34.76\00:45:38.60 you're physically at your weakest, but he learned from 00:45:38.60\00:45:41.30 Jesus. He didn't know it before, but he knows it now. Sometimes, when you're at your 00:45:41.30\00:45:44.51 physical weakest, you are at your spiritual strongest. And Jesus was weak physically, 00:45:44.51\00:45:50.78 but He was strong. And so, when the devil spits that out -- 00:45:50.78\00:45:58.59 "Come on, boy. You're hungry, aren't You? I can tell. Look at You -- skin and bones. 00:45:58.59\00:46:03.32 Turn those stones into bread, right now! Do it!" 00:46:03.32\00:46:07.50 Jesus looks at that, and you know what Jesus does. "It is written: 'Man shall not 00:46:07.50\00:46:13.23 live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" 00:46:13.23\00:46:16.50 Isn't that what he said? Ah! [ Snaps fingers ] Now the fowler, 00:46:16.50\00:46:21.58 who, himself, is a bird, with his mighty talons, takes the Son of God, Son of Man, and he flies 00:46:21.58\00:46:28.32 Him high into the dark heavens and deposits Him on the top of a 00:46:28.32\00:46:35.49 dizzying pinnacle. He says, "All right. You like quoting Scriptures, don't You? 00:46:35.49\00:46:40.30 So do I. I have a Scripture for You. I suggest that You throw 00:46:40.30\00:46:43.87 yourself off of this, because if God is Your God and You are who You say You are and that voice 00:46:43.87\00:46:49.94 at the river said You were, just throw Yourself off. You -- He'll 00:46:49.94\00:46:56.75 send His angels." And the devil quotes -- now, I want you to 00:46:56.91\00:46:59.08 watch this -- put it on the screen, please. Matthew 4:6. 00:46:59.08\00:47:01.98 Temptation number 2. The devil says, "For it is 00:47:01.98\00:47:04.22 written..." Where did he just hear that? 00:47:04.22\00:47:05.65 He heard that from Jesus. "I can play this game -- For it 00:47:05.65\00:47:07.32 is written..." And now he quotes Psalm 91. 00:47:07.32\00:47:09.82 Watch this. "For it is written" -- 00:47:09.82\00:47:11.99 Psalm 91 -- "'He,'" the four-named God -- 00:47:11.99\00:47:14.30 "'will command his angels concerning you, and they will 00:47:14.30\00:47:16.60 lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your 00:47:16.60\00:47:20.57 foot against a stone.'" "You want to quote Scripture? 00:47:20.57\00:47:23.30 I quoted Scripture." Ah! But notice what he does. 00:47:23.30\00:47:26.21 I'm gonna show you the real Psalm 91 now, and you'll see 00:47:26.21\00:47:28.68 where the surgery is. "For he," the four-named God, 00:47:28.68\00:47:31.08 "will command his angels concerning you" -- underline the 00:47:31.08\00:47:33.75 part that the devil cut out, please. 00:47:33.75\00:47:38.22 He cut that line out. That is the gut. 00:47:38.22\00:47:40.82 That is the heart of the entire psalm. 00:47:40.82\00:47:43.12 He cut it out. He skipped. 00:47:43.12\00:47:45.63 And so he added an "and." "For he will command his angels 00:47:45.63\00:47:48.06 concerning you and they will lift you up." 00:47:48.06\00:47:50.73 Ah. You know why he cut it out? Because it's the secret to your victory against the fowler. 00:47:50.90\00:47:59.27 And he doesn't want Jesus to be reminded of the secret. He cuts 00:47:59.27\00:48:03.48 it out. But in the act of cutting it out -- get this -- Jesus, who learned this from 00:48:03.48\00:48:08.38 knee-high to a grasshopper, learned it -- He's on red alert. Something's missing. 00:48:08.38\00:48:13.29 Ah, He knew what was missing. And instantly, He now can identify who this being is. 00:48:13.29\00:48:20.16 Who would play cut-and-paste with the inspired Word of God? 00:48:20.16\00:48:28.20 Wow. The devil has hated that truth. Put that truth on the screen. And, boy, I wish there 00:48:28.20\00:48:33.58 were a way that I could just hit, "Lock me in, Scotty." Wsssh! I'd lock that truth into 00:48:33.58\00:48:37.11 your mind right now. It'd never leave. Look at that sentence. 00:48:37.11\00:48:39.21 Don't look at me -- look at that sentence. 00:48:39.21\00:48:41.32 The one line Satan was absolutely certain must not be introduced to Jesus. 00:48:43.42\00:48:49.79 [ Snaps fingers ] What he cut out -- What he didn't want Jesus 00:48:49.79\00:48:53.60 to know, he doesn't want you to know. So, look at that line. Fool him. Memorize it. 00:48:53.60\00:48:58.80 "He will guard you in all your ways." That is the great, great 00:48:58.80\00:49:02.17 truth of this mother hen/bird metaphor. If last week's raven 00:49:02.17\00:49:05.27 metaphor revealed the truth God will provide, then this week's mother-hen metaphor reveals the 00:49:05.27\00:49:09.48 truth God will protect. He will protect you. He will protect 00:49:09.48\00:49:13.92 you. He will guard you in all your ways. Summon it into your 00:49:13.92\00:49:22.72 -- Drop it into your memory and summon it up day after day after 00:49:22.72\00:49:27.96 day. "I will put my trust in Him, for He will guard me in all 00:49:27.96\00:49:31.53 my ways. I will put my trust in Him, for He will guard me in all 00:49:31.53\00:49:35.94 my ways." Lock that line in -- the one that Satan was hoping you'll never remember. 00:49:35.94\00:49:42.18 Lock it in, and you'll have the secret to why Jesus was victorious with the dark and 00:49:42.18\00:49:50.52 dastardly fowler. He will guard me -- me -- in all my ways -- 00:49:50.52\00:50:00.63 period. All my ways. And by the way, not just for mañana. 00:50:00.63\00:50:04.77 I know this psalm is for mañana, for the meltdown that's coming and the plagues will be talked 00:50:04.77\00:50:08.97 about if you just -- if you'll memorize this psalm. The plagues 00:50:08.97\00:50:12.27 will be talked about. I know this is about mañana, but it's 00:50:12.27\00:50:15.68 also about today. When the fowler is challenging your peace of mind and your security of 00:50:15.68\00:50:21.78 heart, when he is challenging you -- and some of you are being challenged big-time right now. 00:50:21.78\00:50:26.82 Nobody knows the story but you. You know it. When he's challenging you, one 00:50:26.82\00:50:32.79 line to the fowler -- "He will guard me in all my ways." "He will guard me..." -- eight 00:50:32.79\00:50:41.74 words. "I will put my trust in him" -- seven words. 00:50:41.74\00:50:44.61 Put the eight and the seven together. "He will guard me in 00:50:44.61\00:50:48.34 all my ways. I will put my trust in Him. He'll take care of me. 00:50:48.34\00:50:53.65 He will guard me." Personalize it -- "He will guard me" -- 00:50:53.65\00:50:56.79 personalize it -- "in all my ways." When your private world 00:50:56.79\00:51:00.66 melts down, He will guard you. When the world melts down one day, He will guard you. 00:51:00.66\00:51:04.49 He will guard me in all my ways. He will guard me in all my ways. That's it, ladies and gentlemen. 00:51:04.49\00:51:08.26 What the devil cut out is the bottom line to this metaphor. 00:51:08.26\00:51:12.07 Thank you, devil. Thank you for drawing our attention to it. Now we won't forget it. 00:51:12.07\00:51:15.67 "He will guard me in all my ways" -- say it out loud with 00:51:15.67\00:51:18.61 me. >> He will guard me in all my ways. 00:51:18.61\00:51:22.71 >> He will guard me. He'll guard me. 00:51:22.88\00:51:28.12 Wow. You have nothing to fear. I need to say this. 00:51:28.12\00:51:32.52 You have nothing to fear, and the devil knows it. 00:51:32.52\00:51:35.12 [ Chuckles ] The devil knows that you have 00:51:35.12\00:51:37.89 nothing to fear, which is why he's so breathing down your 00:51:37.89\00:51:42.00 neck, because he's gonna intimidate you into submission. 00:51:42.00\00:51:44.60 He's gonna intimidate you to break that trust with your 00:51:44.60\00:51:46.94 Father in heaven, that four-named God. 00:51:46.94\00:51:48.50 He's gonna break that trust if it kills him, because he knows 00:51:48.50\00:51:52.24 you have nothing to fear. 00:51:52.24\00:51:53.21 Angels who excel in strength were surrounding Jesus, and those angels will be surrounding 00:51:53.38\00:51:57.85 you. Any temptation that comes your way -- "He will guard me 00:51:57.85\00:52:02.48 all my days." He will guard all my ways. He will guard you in 00:52:02.48\00:52:09.66 all your ways. Wow. No matter what you're dreading 00:52:09.66\00:52:12.93 in the future -- no matter what. The devil knows. Angels who 00:52:12.93\00:52:21.34 excel in strength. The Holy Spirit, who is the omnipotence of God, Almighty God, all four 00:52:21.34\00:52:25.17 names, inside of you. The Holy Spirit says, "Dwight, what do 00:52:25.17\00:52:29.11 you have to fear?" He's saying to you, whatever your name is -- He's saying, "Hey, girl, what do 00:52:29.11\00:52:32.08 you have to fear? You have nothing to fear. I'm in you. 00:52:32.08\00:52:36.05 I will guard you in all your ways. Do you think I would 00:52:36.05\00:52:42.76 forget you? I am the hen. I am the mother hen. Come, come, 00:52:42.76\00:52:48.03 come, come, come, come. Quick, quick, quick. Fire's coming. 00:52:48.03\00:52:54.94 Come." In the words of William Orcutt Cushing, "Under His wings 00:52:54.94\00:53:00.64 -- Under His wings, who from His love" -- how's it go? -- "can 00:53:00.64\00:53:06.82 sever? Under His wings, my soul shall abide, safely abide forever." Ladies and gentlemen, 00:53:06.82\00:53:14.32 that's the truth of the mother-hen metaphor and the truth that will save your 00:53:14.32\00:53:19.83 life... ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:53:28.40\00:53:48.19 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:53:48.19\00:54:08.18 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:54:08.18\00:54:28.10 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:54:28.10\00:54:48.05 ¤¤ ¤¤ 00:54:48.05\00:54:58.46 Sing it like a prayer. Keep us under Your 00:56:25.05\00:56:28.68 wings. If we're not under Your wings, like Jesus said, how much 00:56:28.68\00:56:32.55 longer do I wait? "You must come -- come to me now. Don't wait. 00:56:32.55\00:56:35.69 My arms are outstretched. My protection is eternal. I'll save you just as long, but 00:56:35.69\00:56:44.50 you must come to me." Father, let not one man, not one woman, not one child, not one 00:56:44.50\00:56:50.77 boy, not one girl say, "No, no, no, no, no, no. I can't come. I 00:56:50.77\00:56:55.44 won't come." We must come under Your wings. Hold us there. Keep 00:56:55.44\00:57:03.15 us there until our Lord Jesus comes.
