At the end of the 00:09:55.72\00:10:00.10 day, when we look around us and we see the birds in the air and we see the animals all around 00:10:00.10\00:10:04.50 us, they have learned to fall in love and trust in God, but we struggle because we have not 00:10:04.50\00:10:11.11 learned to have a relationship with Him that we put above 00:10:11.11\00:10:13.91 everything else. So when you say these words, when you talk about falling in love with Jesus, when 00:10:13.91\00:10:17.71 you talk about having a relationship with Him, understand that that's the 00:10:17.71\00:10:22.45 beginning and the end. That's why we were created, to be loved -- just to be loved. So let's 00:10:22.45\00:10:27.86 take a moment to fall back in love, to think about what it is to be in love with the Savior, 00:10:27.86\00:10:32.86 with the God who gave us everything -- "the very breath that's in our nostrils," Job 00:10:32.86\00:10:37.93 says. That belongs to me. So listen as I sing "Falling in 00:10:37.93\00:10:42.44 Love With Jesus," this first little verse, and then sing it back with me, and just open your 00:10:42.44\00:10:47.54 hearts up to our great God. It goes like this. 00:10:47.54\00:10:51.25 い い 00:10:51.41\00:11:11.40 い Sing it with me. 00:11:11.40\00:11:23.18 い い 00:11:23.18\00:11:43.10 い い 00:11:43.10\00:12:03.12 い い 00:12:03.12\00:12:23.04 い い 00:12:23.04\00:12:42.99 い い 00:12:42.99\00:12:54.24 This is your chance now to come down and lay your burdens before the throne or just lay a 00:12:54.40\00:13:01.38 praise. "God, You are so good, and it's awesome to be Your 00:13:01.38\00:13:05.85 child. I just want to tell You how much I love You." So come 00:13:05.85\00:13:09.78 down now. Don't let the pews or the people standing next to you or you feeling closed up in the 00:13:09.78\00:13:15.09 middle stop you. Move down towards the throne, and pour your heart out to the 00:13:15.09\00:13:18.86 Father. 00:19:39.87\00:19:40.74 >> So, I'm walking around today, and I'm picking up -- there's a little theme going on, and so I 00:19:43.18\00:19:47.48 grab a pen, and I start writing it down. I got to share this 00:19:47.48\00:19:50.85 with you -- unbelievable. 00:19:50.85\00:19:51.75 There are people who are having -- no kidding -- they're 00:19:51.92\00:19:54.96 having their wedding anniversary today. 00:19:54.96\00:19:58.06 But Bill and Ruth Chobatar -- I'll start with the youngest -- 00:19:58.06\00:20:02.26 and their kids, Todd and Janine Chobatar, down in 00:20:02.26\00:20:05.77 Orlando, they're celebrating their 22nd anniversary. 00:20:05.77\00:20:10.54 Wow. And then I go into Sabbath 00:20:10.54\00:20:12.91 school with Ella because I want to be with Ella and Isabelle in 00:20:12.91\00:20:15.78 Sabbath school, and Bruce Clausse is up front 00:20:15.78\00:20:17.91 leading, and I find out Bruce and Linda Clausse are 00:20:17.91\00:20:20.32 celebrating number 36 today. 00:20:20.32\00:20:23.99 And then I show up in first church and find out that these beautiful flowers are in honor 00:20:24.15\00:20:28.99 of Ben and Sandy Chilson, who are celebrating their number 50 00:20:28.99\00:20:34.03 today. And then I'm talking in the hallway about this, and I bump into Glen Johnson, who 00:20:34.03\00:20:39.07 informs me that he and Carline are celebrating their number 62 00:20:39.07\00:20:42.74 today. [ Congregants murmur ] Wow! And as it turns out, Karen 00:20:42.74\00:20:47.21 and I are celebrating our number 44 today, so what's up with that? You know, we got married 00:20:47.21\00:20:51.71 right after they invented electricity, so I know that's been awhile after all but... 00:20:51.71\00:20:55.65 [ Laughter ] Can you believe that? So, I have a little poem I 00:20:55.65\00:20:58.92 wrote for all the men in these couples, and I spent some time in this poem -- a poem I've 00:20:58.92\00:21:03.66 written for all the men in these anniversaries, and there may be others that are celebrating it. 00:21:03.66\00:21:09.33 Here's the poem. It's not real long. But it's still a poem. 00:21:09.33\00:21:16.54 "Roses are red..." [ Laughter ] Have you heard this one before? 00:21:16.54\00:21:22.14 [ Laughter ] Are you serious? I would write something, and 00:21:22.14\00:21:25.38 you've already heard it? "Roses are red, violets are blue -- I'm forever grateful to 00:21:25.38\00:21:31.45 God because I fell in love and married you." Hallelujah. 00:21:31.45\00:21:35.82 All right, put your hands together for all these couples. 00:21:35.82\00:21:39.49 They're out there. God bless them. [ Applause ] You're having 00:21:39.49\00:21:42.50 an anniversary -- and June is a wedding month, so you're gonna have an anniversary this month, 00:21:42.50\00:21:48.04 please receive our very best wishes that God will make the next chapter ahead of you even 00:21:48.04\00:21:53.78 better than what you've had. He is so good. Yeah. 00:21:53.78\00:21:58.15 All right, I want to pray, and then I'm really excited about 00:21:58.15\00:22:01.88 this teaching. Let's get to it right now. Dear Father, a full morning in worship, that's what 00:22:01.88\00:22:06.99 happens when we come to Your house. Thank You for worship today. And we're glad we didn't 00:22:06.99\00:22:12.06 have to come alone, that there are people sitting around us -- strangers, but we're still 00:22:12.06\00:22:15.66 together. And now we come to the moment when we turn to Your 00:22:15.66\00:22:18.90 Word, and we want the Word to speak an intelligible word that we can pick up and take into the 00:22:18.90\00:22:26.24 busy life. So may that be the case today. We pray in Jesus' 00:22:26.24\00:22:32.88 name, amen. When I say "the ravens," those who are sports-minded among us 00:22:32.88\00:22:39.09 immediately think of the NFL franchise in -- what city? In Baltimore. Baltimore Ravens, 00:22:39.09\00:22:43.76 right? But when I say "the raven," singular, the literary-minded among us, they 00:22:43.76\00:22:51.53 immediately think of Edgar Allan Poe and his poem, "The Raven." "Once upon a midnight dreary, 00:22:51.53\00:22:56.24 when I pondered weak and weary -- Quoth the raven, 00:22:56.24\00:23:00.61 'Nevermore.'" And when I say "raven," singular, to the Bible-minded among us, they 00:23:03.31\00:23:07.62 immediately think of Noah, who opens the windows of the ark and -- pfft! -- there goes that 00:23:07.62\00:23:11.95 raven, trying to find anywhere to land. Nope. Home again. And to these same Bible-minded 00:23:11.95\00:23:19.19 among us, when I say "the ravens," plural... nobody thinks 00:23:19.19\00:23:27.27 about Jesus. Everybody thinks about Elijah, when, in fact, Jesus has very much to do with 00:23:27.27\00:23:33.94 the ravens, as we're about to find out, but, first, the story of Elijah. So I want to go that 00:23:33.94\00:23:38.31 story. Once upon a time, in the sweet incense, the servant fan waving -- throne room of a 00:23:38.31\00:23:47.62 wicked king -- a rogue prophet shows up. Let's go -- 1 Kings 00:23:47.62\00:23:52.63 17. Open your Bible to 1 Kings 17, and while you're doing that, if we could just get the volume 00:23:52.63\00:23:57.57 down just a tad? We're getting a bit of a ring up here, guys. 00:23:57.57\00:24:01.40 Bless you. 1 Kings 17:1. I'll be in the 00:24:01.40\00:24:04.94 New International Version today. 00:24:04.94\00:24:06.84 Oh, by the way, while you're finding 1 Kings 17 in the 00:24:07.01\00:24:09.81 Old Testament, this is number two in our series "Gone to the 00:24:09.81\00:24:12.91 Birds: Lessons from the Divine Ornithologist --" eagles last 00:24:12.91\00:24:15.98 week, ravens today. I wonder what next Sabbath is 00:24:15.98\00:24:18.59 going to be. Just five Sabbaths in June, but 00:24:18.59\00:24:20.96 a different bird every time. Let's go to 1 Kings 17:1. 00:24:20.96\00:24:26.83 "Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, 00:24:26.83\00:24:30.90 'As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve --'" 00:24:30.90\00:24:34.70 "before whom I stand," some of your translations read -- "there 00:24:34.70\00:24:38.87 will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my 00:24:38.87\00:24:42.14 word." It's just like a hand grenade. 00:24:42.14\00:24:44.25 He just tosses that hand grenade into the Oval Office and then 00:24:44.25\00:24:47.42 walks away. Boom, he's gone. 00:24:47.42\00:24:49.08 And before the king can say, "Get it," he's gone, 00:24:49.08\00:24:51.69 disappeared. Verse two. 00:24:51.69\00:24:54.99 "And then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 'Leave here --'" 00:24:54.99\00:24:57.66 "Quick, quick! Go, go, go, go!" 00:24:57.66\00:24:59.13 "'Turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the 00:24:59.13\00:25:01.66 Jordan. You will drink from the brook, 00:25:01.66\00:25:03.93 and I have commanded --'" some of your translations read, "'I 00:25:03.93\00:25:07.57 have commanded the --'" what? Ah, "'The ravens to supply you 00:25:07.57\00:25:13.61 with food there.'" Here they are, featured bird 00:25:13.61\00:25:16.54 number two. And, sure enough, verse five, 00:25:16.54\00:25:19.21 "So Elijah did what the Lord had told him." 00:25:19.21\00:25:22.62 Do you know the difference between a raven and a crow, hmm? 00:25:31.43\00:25:35.56 I didn't either. You know what I thought? And I'm embarrassed to 00:25:35.73\00:25:38.90 tell you this because this is how ignorant I am. I thought raven and crow were 00:25:38.90\00:25:41.90 just synonyms for the same bird. Wrong! [ Chuckles ] I found out 00:25:41.90\00:25:47.31 this week that they'revery different -- oh, my -- very different, the raven and the 00:25:47.31\00:25:51.75 crow -- same family, but very different. In fact, let me share 00:25:51.75\00:25:55.85 with you the differences. I got them scribbled down right here. 00:25:55.85\00:25:57.89 Ravens are bigger than crows. Yeah, they're a little huskier. [ Exhales sharply, grunts ] 00:25:57.89\00:26:01.59 Number two, crows go, "Caw, caw, caw!" [ Hoarsely ] Something 00:26:01.59\00:26:07.40 like that. [ Clears throat ] [ Normal voice ] I ought to quit 00:26:07.40\00:26:09.63 trying -- [Laughs] I ought to quit trying to talk like these 00:26:09.63\00:26:12.27 birds. "What are you, bilingual, Dwight?" [ Laughter ] 00:26:12.27\00:26:14.24 No, I'm not. Crows go -- what you just heard. [ Laughs ] 00:26:14.24\00:26:19.41 And rave-- No, seriously, ravens go, "Crow, crow, crow!" So crows go, "Caw, caw, caw!" 00:26:19.41\00:26:27.25 Yeah, you got the difference. Okay. Number three, ravens 00:26:27.25\00:26:31.09 travel in pairs, and they're mated for life. Happy 00:26:31.09\00:26:34.86 anniversary. They're mated for life. Not crows. Crows fly alone 00:26:34.86\00:26:40.03 or fly in flocks that are called "murders." That's the technical name. They're called murders, 00:26:40.03\00:26:44.43 old flock of crows. And, finally, in flight, ravens have a wedge-shaped tail so 00:26:44.43\00:26:50.67 that, when they put the tail out, it looks very flat because the feather lengths are 00:26:50.67\00:26:53.48 different. Crows have the same length, and so it looks like a 00:26:53.48\00:26:55.88 fan, and that's how you're going to be able to tell the difference. But ravens and crows 00:26:55.88\00:27:01.22 -- Listen to this, choir. Ravens and crows have one stunning similarity, and that 00:27:01.22\00:27:05.75 is, because they are part of the corvid family, their brains -- get this -- their brains are 00:27:05.75\00:27:12.69 among the largest in all the bird kingdom. Largest brains. 00:27:12.69\00:27:17.33 In fact, did you know that the brain/body-weight ratio for ravens is the same as the apes, 00:27:17.33\00:27:24.41 the whales, and the humans? [ Chuckles ] They're very smart. So when I told the kids about 00:27:24.41\00:27:30.45 this little BBC clip, you got to -- not now, please. This little clip, you've got to 00:27:30.45\00:27:35.22 watch it. Watch it after dessert today. It's fascinating. 00:27:35.22\00:27:38.69 You're gonna watch an American crow, a North American crow -- you're gonna watch him go 00:27:38.69\00:27:43.46 through an amazing eight-step, sequential, problem-solving maze, and you're going to say, 00:27:43.46\00:27:47.83 "How did he do that?" There's only one way that you and I as friends of God would 00:27:47.83\00:27:53.07 respond. [ Scoffs ] God gave him a very -- they're the brainiacs 00:27:53.07\00:27:58.77 of the bird kingdom -- a very bright mind. Which explains why 00:27:58.77\00:28:03.61 God could come to the ravens -- I imagine it was just two ravens. If they travel in pairs, 00:28:03.61\00:28:07.15 it's just two ravens. And He comes to the ravens, and He said, "Mr. and Mrs. Raven, I 00:28:07.15\00:28:10.52 need some help with this man named Elijah. I'm going to 00:28:10.52\00:28:13.96 provide breakfast, and I'll provide supper, but I need you to be the room service. I need 00:28:13.96\00:28:18.49 you to go to where he is, and I'll tell you where he is, and you'll find him -- morning, and 00:28:18.49\00:28:22.93 I want you to give him bread and meat and come back in the evening -- bread and meat. Did 00:28:22.93\00:28:28.54 you get that, ravens?" "Crow, crow, crow, crow! Got it." And that's exactly what they 00:28:28.54\00:28:34.48 did. Intelligent. I mean, these birds are -- I 00:28:34.48\00:28:37.21 hate to tell you about this, but these birds are really shysters. They're a bunch of crooks. 00:28:37.21\00:28:43.15 They're stealing each other's food all the time, and that's why the raven has learned, if 00:28:43.15\00:28:46.65 you hide the food, your cache of food, nobody will see. And that's why ravens will fake 00:28:46.65\00:28:52.93 like they're hiding their food and all their buddies are 00:28:52.93\00:28:56.36 watching. [ Chuckles ] [ Chittering ] They didn't hide a 00:28:56.36\00:29:00.97 thing. [ Exhales sharply ] They're gone, and they hide it 00:29:00.97\00:29:04.17 somewhere else. Ravens have been known to summon wolves. "Wolves! 00:29:04.17\00:29:07.74 Come over here!" I don't know how they do it, but they get the wolves there when they find a 00:29:07.74\00:29:11.81 carcass because the ravens can't tear a carcass open. They need the wolves to rip it 00:29:11.81\00:29:14.72 open, and then they'll go and pick supper or breakfast. 00:29:14.72\00:29:20.19 They're smart. The juvenile ravens -- get this. Juvenile ravens have been seen and 00:29:20.19\00:29:25.86 observed to climb a snowbank and then slide down on their rump -- turn around and run right back 00:29:25.86\00:29:31.30 up, slide down again. There is no biological purpose for this. They are just having fun. 00:29:31.30\00:29:35.60 No kidding. They're social creatures. They will take twigs, 00:29:35.60\00:29:39.51 cut them up into little parts, so that they can play social 00:29:39.51\00:29:43.31 games together. Now you know where you got it from. Same 00:29:43.31\00:29:47.62 Creator. And so, in obedience to that Creator's command, the ravens -- we just read it -- 00:29:47.62\00:29:53.96 bring Elijah breakfast and supper every single day. Now, lookit, it's not a menu 00:29:53.96\00:29:58.16 with a whole lot of variety. It's just bread and meat. In the Hebrew, it's "bread and 00:29:58.16\00:30:02.26 meat, bread and meat." It's not a menu for a vegetarian, certainly not for a 00:30:02.26\00:30:06.07 vegan, but, you know, when you're running out of food, that's what you get. 00:30:06.07\00:30:13.17 Which, by the way, in all essence, is really a tribute. It's not a tribute to these 00:30:13.17\00:30:17.48 smart ravens. It's a tribute to the intelligent designer of this 00:30:17.48\00:30:20.92 universe, who equipped His creation to respond to Him. I mean, you think about it. 00:30:20.92\00:30:28.89 I don't suppose the Creator is ever without help. All he has to 00:30:28.89\00:30:32.03 go is go -- [ Snaps fingers ] [ Exhales deeply ] Or come -- 00:30:32.03\00:30:35.16 [ Breathes harshly ] Or somebody purring, some big cat purring up 00:30:35.16\00:30:39.37 against Him. If the Creator needs transportation, He summons 00:30:39.37\00:30:42.00 a whale. "Hey, whale, I need you -- transport." Jesus said, "If 00:30:42.00\00:30:47.28 you tell these people to shut their mouths, I'll tell you what, the rocks will become a 00:30:47.28\00:30:52.65 choir of praise. They will start singing to me." If God needs a spokesman because He's got a 00:30:52.65\00:31:00.22 recalcitrant prophet, the donkey starts talking. That's just the way it is. All of creation loves 00:31:00.22\00:31:05.19 the Creator, except the human race and one third of the angels. Go figure. Go figure. 00:31:05.19\00:31:12.13 But even if you're a friend of God, the truth is, if nature goes berserk, you reap the 00:31:12.13\00:31:16.47 consequences, and that's exactly what happens here. Look at this. 00:31:16.47\00:31:19.91 Look at verse seven. 00:31:19.91\00:31:21.31 Elijah said, "Not until you hear from me again, you wicked king, will you get rain." 00:31:28.25\00:31:33.56 He has to bear the brunt of it. So the Spirit of the Lord comes to Elijah, and He says, "Elijah, 00:31:33.56\00:31:39.69 listen, you got to get out of here. We're going to put you in 00:31:39.69\00:31:42.80 a pagan land. Ahab will never think of looking for you there. 00:31:42.80\00:31:45.77 And when you get to that little village -- it'll be a pagan village -- you will see a little 00:31:45.77\00:31:50.11 lady outside the walls of the village. She will be picking up 00:31:50.11\00:31:53.51 sticks, and then --" [ Whispering indistinctly ] "That's what I need you to do." 00:31:53.51\00:31:57.61 And, sure enough, Elijah does that. He goes into that pagan 00:31:57.61\00:32:00.62 land of Sidon, and there is Zarephath. There is a woman. By this point, would you be 00:32:00.62\00:32:05.79 saying, "You can count on God"? It's all happened exactly as he 00:32:05.79\00:32:12.89 was told. And he says, "My dear woman, I am a stranger." [ Chuckles ] And she looked up. 00:32:12.89\00:32:17.77 She could tell just by looking at him. What are we talking 00:32:17.77\00:32:20.57 about? We're talking about camel hair, leather garment, mantle over his shoulder, bushy beard, 00:32:20.57\00:32:26.27 thick eyebrows. He's also a holy man. The woman can figure it out 00:32:26.27\00:32:30.31 -- he's a holy man. And he speaks like an Israelite. "Dear woman, I'm from out of 00:32:30.31\00:32:35.85 town, and I am so hungry and thirsty. Could you please go 00:32:35.85\00:32:40.19 back to your home and make a little bread for me and some water? Bring it to me, and I'll 00:32:40.19\00:32:43.96 leave you alone." And the woman looks at him. "As the Lord your 00:32:43.96\00:32:47.96 God is Yahweh, your -- I've heard of the name of your God. As Yahweh, your God, lives, let 00:32:47.96\00:32:52.27 me tell you something, buddy. I'm picking up sticks right now for the last little fire. 00:32:52.27\00:32:56.77 I have a little oil, a little fire. My son and I will have our 00:32:56.77\00:33:00.31 last supper together, and then it's finis. We'll die." 00:33:00.31\00:33:06.35 Elijah sees the anguish on that woman's countenance, and he says, "Woman, woman, woman, 00:33:06.35\00:33:12.09 woman. Don't be afraid. My God will take care of you if 00:33:12.09\00:33:24.53 you first do this." Something about the man prompts her. 00:33:24.53\00:33:28.34 She does. Now read the ending. Read the ending to the story 00:33:28.34\00:33:30.74 here, verse 15. 00:33:30.74\00:33:32.14 Verse 16. 00:33:39.08\00:33:40.48 I'm telling you what, ladies and gentlemen, it is absolutely 00:33:50.36\00:33:52.36 true. 00:33:52.36\00:33:53.26 God will take care of you. He will take care of you. 00:33:53.43\00:33:58.93 If, like Elijah, if, like the widow, you make God first, He will make it last and last and 00:34:02.14\00:34:16.02 last if you first make God first. That's no quid pro quo. 00:34:16.02\00:34:25.59 That's, "Do you really want me?" That's all it is. "Do you really 00:34:25.59\00:34:31.53 want me? 'Cause I run the whole universe." Let's talk about 00:34:31.53\00:34:39.31 ravens for one more moment. There's an interesting little couplet that I found getting 00:34:39.31\00:34:42.34 ready for this message today, two little lines. I'm gonna run 00:34:42.34\00:34:45.28 them by you, put them on the screen. They're in your study guide. It's a take-home study 00:34:45.28\00:34:48.32 guide, no fill in the blanks. Let's put the first one up, Job 00:34:48.32\00:34:52.02 38:41. God is talking to Job, and He's saying, "Okay, Job, where were you, where were you? 00:34:52.02\00:34:54.79 Who did this, who did this, who did this?" These are all 00:34:54.79\00:34:57.13 rhetorical questions. We know the answer is God. "You did, You 00:34:57.13\00:35:00.26 did, You did." But He's trying to make a point to Job, and he 00:35:00.43\00:35:03.70 says, "Hey, Job, who provides food for the raven when its young cry out --" crow, 00:35:03.70\00:35:07.04 crow, crow -- "when its young cry out to God and wander about 00:35:07.04\00:35:10.21 for lack of food?" Who do you suppose does that? 00:35:10.21\00:35:12.74 And if we don't get it, because it's a rhetorical question and 00:35:12.74\00:35:15.81 we're not aware that the answer is embedded in the question, the 00:35:15.81\00:35:18.98 psalmist comes along in Psalm 147:9, and he answers the 00:35:18.98\00:35:21.75 question for us. 00:35:21.75\00:35:23.15 "He," God, "provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call." 00:35:23.32\00:35:31.79 Can you believe that? The little ravens call to Him, God hears them calling, and He 00:35:31.79\00:35:37.37 says, "Get food to them. Get food to them. Help Mama get that 00:35:37.37\00:35:41.80 -- Help Papa get that food..." leading us to this stunning 00:35:41.80\00:35:47.41 assumption. Apparently, the Creator of the universe -- get 00:35:47.58\00:35:50.11 this. Listen, listen. Apparently, the Creator of the 00:35:50.11\00:35:52.38 universe, 24/7, is monitoring all His creation, including you 00:35:52.38\00:36:00.99 and me -- 24/7. We are so excited to have Kirk 00:36:00.99\00:36:05.53 and Chelsea with us. I mean, are we high-fiving 00:36:05.53\00:36:07.73 our -- And Karen and I get them for seven days. 00:36:07.73\00:36:11.97 Wow. Let me tell you about their 00:36:11.97\00:36:13.50 little girls, precious little girls -- Ella, 4 and 2/3rds, and 00:36:13.50\00:36:18.47 Isabelle is just 3 months old. But, anyway, they've got this 00:36:18.47\00:36:23.45 gizmo. I tell you, high-tech parenting, 00:36:23.45\00:36:25.65 what's up with that? 00:36:25.65\00:36:27.25 They got this gizmo. They can put the gizmo up in one room, put another part of the 00:36:27.42\00:36:31.12 gizmo in the room where little Ella is taking a nap or, in the middle of the night, is 00:36:31.12\00:36:36.39 sleeping, and do you know what? This high-tech piece is a video/audio infrared monitor 00:36:36.39\00:36:43.43 that keeps Mother Chelsea in instantaneous visual, auditory touch with her sleeping girl day 00:36:43.43\00:36:50.34 or night. You can't believe it. And let me tell you, more than 00:36:50.34\00:36:54.08 that -- This is a wonder drug. More than that, Chelsea or Kirk can get right up to that 00:36:54.08\00:37:00.58 device, push a button, and it happens -- they speak, and the little girls, who cannot see 00:37:00.58\00:37:07.16 Mother or Father anywhere, hear the voice of their parent. "[ Whispering ] Get back to 00:37:07.16\00:37:13.50 bed." [ Laughter ] [ Normal voice ] Just like God, 00:37:13.50\00:37:20.44 24/7 monitor. He doesn't even have to show up. He just sends a 00:37:20.44\00:37:24.21 voice, and He plays down this little -- Infrared, in the middle of the night, He's 00:37:24.21\00:37:28.21 watching you. Infrared, in the middle of the night, He says, "I have a word for you," and you 00:37:28.21\00:37:32.48 hear it. You don't see Him, but you hear it. That's the God of 00:37:32.48\00:37:36.58 the universe, day and night, constantly monitoring the plight, the needs, the safety, 00:37:36.58\00:37:40.42 the wants, the cries of His little creatures like you and me. And when the young little 00:37:40.42\00:37:43.73 ravens -- "croak, croak, croak, croak, croak, croak, croak --" when they cry out for food, the 00:37:43.73\00:37:47.56 heart of God is touched. "Help that mother get some food, will 00:37:47.56\00:37:53.54 you?" Which, by the way, is a perfect segue to Jesus and his 00:37:53.54\00:37:59.57 own comments. You didn't know that Jesus actually made some comments about ravens. 00:37:59.57\00:38:02.31 You know why? Because we're so enamored with the Sermon on the 00:38:02.31\00:38:05.11 Mount in Matthew and we don't realize that Luke has cut up that Sermon on the Mount and 00:38:05.11\00:38:08.35 spread it all the way through his Gospel, that when one of the cut-up pieces is rendered in 00:38:08.35\00:38:11.59 Luke, it's not like in Matthew, and I'm going to show this to you, the last chapter that we're 00:38:11.59\00:38:15.12 in. So we leave 1 Kings 17 and we go to Luke 12 because we want 00:38:15.12\00:38:19.43 some red letters before we leave this building. Luke chapter 12. 00:38:19.43\00:38:22.60 Please find Luke 12:22. 00:38:22.60\00:38:27.47 Luke 12:22. "Then Jesus said to his 00:38:27.64\00:38:30.87 disciples --" that would be you and me -- "'therefore, I tell 00:38:30.87\00:38:33.41 you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or 00:38:33.41\00:38:37.08 about your body, what you will wear. 00:38:37.08\00:38:39.58 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 00:38:39.58\00:38:43.42 Consider the ravens --'" Ooh! It just says "birds" in Matthew. 00:38:43.42\00:38:47.72 "'Consider the ravens," Luke adds. 00:38:47.72\00:38:50.33 "'They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet 00:38:50.33\00:38:54.60 God feeds them. And how much more valuable you 00:38:54.60\00:38:58.33 are than birds!'" 00:38:58.33\00:39:00.67 It's as if Jesus -- who is, by the way, poor as a church mouse, poor as a church mouse. 00:39:00.84\00:39:06.01 It's as if Jesus is saying, "Yo, human beings, fellow human beings, think with me. 00:39:06.01\00:39:11.41 Why do you worry? Why are you fretting? Why do you have this 00:39:11.41\00:39:17.15 knot in your stomach that gets tighter by the day? Why are you 00:39:17.15\00:39:21.32 anxious? Don't you understand that the God of the universe, who is your personal Creator, is 00:39:21.32\00:39:28.40 able to handle every detail of your life? Don't you think 00:39:28.40\00:39:32.10 you're worth more than the ravens that He makes sure get food?" Rhetorical questions, and 00:39:32.10\00:39:39.01 we know the answer. Of course. Aren't you more valuable? 00:39:39.01\00:39:44.08 In fact, Luke puts that little device in there to remind us. He's already -- Jesus has 00:39:44.08\00:39:47.12 already said that in verse six. 00:39:47.12\00:39:49.02 So just go back to the top of chapter 12, verse 6 -- Jesus 00:39:49.18\00:39:53.56 speaking. "'Are not five sparrows sold for 00:39:53.56\00:39:56.39 two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten 00:39:56.39\00:39:59.36 by God.'" Go to the last part of verse 00:39:59.36\00:40:01.93 seven. "'Don't be afraid; you are worth 00:40:01.93\00:40:04.60 more than many sparrows.'" Ken Logan, our minister of 00:40:04.60\00:40:10.71 music -- It's always a pleasure to be a partner with him in 00:40:10.71\00:40:13.58 worship planning. 00:40:13.58\00:40:14.98 Ken Logan has been composing some choral music and came across this delightful but 00:40:15.14\00:40:21.48 poignant quatrain by the English poet John Banister Tabb. You have these four lines in 00:40:21.48\00:40:26.86 your study guide. You'll take them home with you. This was composed back in 1900. 00:40:26.86\00:40:31.23 He titled this quatrain "Holy Ground." 00:40:31.23\00:40:33.93 I'll put it on the screen for you. 00:40:34.10\00:40:36.03 "PAUSE --" and the poet made sure that's in all caps. 00:40:36.03\00:40:38.87 "PAUSE --" he wants us to slow do-- "Come on, slow down. 00:40:38.87\00:40:42.90 Slow down." 00:40:42.90\00:40:44.31 How tender and how true. 24/7. 00:40:57.52\00:41:02.29 Even the sparrows are being monitored. 00:41:02.29\00:41:07.30 And when one falls, God marks the spot. 00:41:07.30\00:41:12.10 Oh, I love this from "Desire of Ages." 00:41:12.10\00:41:13.64 Please put it on the screen. 00:41:13.64\00:41:15.54 Hit the pause button right there. If Satan could get his 00:41:30.82\00:41:33.49 hands on every squirrel, one hand here and one hand here, do you know what he would do? 00:41:33.49\00:41:36.56 [ Clicking tongue ] Just wring the neck, kill 'em. Just kill 00:41:36.56\00:41:41.03 'em. "We don't need -- I hate this music. Kill it." 00:41:41.03\00:41:45.63 Every creature he would destroy. Guess who's been on your tail from the day you were born, 00:41:45.63\00:41:51.97 every day, waiting for his chance. Ugh. 00:41:51.97\00:41:57.61 Read that last line. 00:41:57.78\00:41:59.35 24/7, the Creator of the universe monitoring His 00:42:07.29\00:42:12.83 creation. 00:42:12.83\00:42:14.13 My, my, my, my, my. Our little girl, Chrissy, she had a pet hamster named Patches. 00:42:14.30\00:42:24.34 Can you picture a hamster? Big fluff of fur. Hamster. Okay, so, we went to Walmart and 00:42:24.34\00:42:30.81 bought this little Hamster cage, and they have these little things in them, so the hamster 00:42:30.81\00:42:34.48 just running around. That's all the hamster does. But Chrissy 00:42:34.48\00:42:38.19 just loved that little Patches. She'd feed it, she'd clean the little cage, and, one night, as 00:42:38.19\00:42:42.59 she was getting ready to go to bed, we noticed that Patches was not behaving -- very lethargic, 00:42:42.59\00:42:47.46 very lethargic, not his energetic self. "What's going on 00:42:47.46\00:42:51.27 with Patches?" We tried to get some water in him. Maybe he 00:42:51.27\00:42:54.60 needs more water. You can't force a hamster to eat. So did the water, we put Chrissy 00:42:54.60\00:42:59.27 to bed, and she prayed for Patches. But before going to bed 00:42:59.27\00:43:05.08 ourselves, we happened to check in on Patches, and you guessed it -- Patches is dead. 00:43:05.08\00:43:11.12 Just a little blob of fur, calico fur. We debate. 00:43:11.12\00:43:18.13 "Shall we tell her now, or shall we wait till the morning? But if we wait till the morning, 00:43:18.13\00:43:21.86 she said, 'When did it happen?' And let's go tell her now." And so we tiptoed into Chrissy's 00:43:21.86\00:43:25.63 darkened bedroom, where Ella is sleeping right now, and I said, "Chrissy, Chrissy." 00:43:25.63\00:43:33.84 And she opened her eyes. You know how your kids open their eyes when they're just 00:43:33.84\00:43:36.95 still asleep? And she sees, "Aww, it's Daddy." And so there's just this little 00:43:36.95\00:43:42.02 angelic smile on her face. "Why is he waking me up?" I said, 00:43:42.02\00:43:48.22 "Chrissy, we just checked on Patches. We have some bad news. 00:43:48.22\00:43:55.46 Patches died." And I tell you what, I'll never forget this moment as long as I live. 00:43:55.46\00:44:01.60 She's still -- her head on the pillow. She's looking straight 00:44:01.60\00:44:05.41 into my face. And you know how that child can just lie there 00:44:05.41\00:44:09.18 without moving, and that reservoir that is behind the eyelids, that dam just begins to 00:44:09.18\00:44:14.95 fill. She doesn't say a word. It just starts overflowing. My 00:44:14.95\00:44:23.46 heart was broken. I knew about this quotation, and I thought to myself, "God, kill him." 00:44:23.46\00:44:34.67 Sorry to admit that. We don't need any more of him on this 00:44:34.67\00:44:42.41 planet. God doesn't need any more of him on this planet. It's the children here that He's 00:44:42.41\00:44:46.31 desperately scrambling -- "Get as many of these kids, and then I'm pulling the plug. 00:44:46.31\00:44:50.55 Just get as many of them as you can." 00:44:50.55\00:44:53.32 This week, Andrews University was stunned with the news, the tragic news, that one of our 00:44:58.33\00:45:04.33 own working at LithoTech, a young mother, Tracy Seitenstich, coming home from a ballgame 00:45:04.33\00:45:12.37 Sunday night -- head-on collision. Gone. 00:45:12.37\00:45:20.18 Do you understand that the Father of this universe is with her parents right now, huddled 00:45:20.18\00:45:27.09 over them, holding them as close as He can? You know who did 00:45:27.09\00:45:33.36 this. We just read it. Jesus said in Matthew 13, "An enemy 00:45:33.36\00:45:39.17 did this." We live where the enemy still reigns. 00:45:39.17\00:45:41.70 In fact, on that same page, in "Desire of Ages" -- I'll put 00:45:41.87\00:45:44.41 this line on the screen for you. 00:45:44.41\00:45:46.31 "Aren't you worth more than five sparrows to Him?" the Creator turned human asks us. 00:45:53.55\00:46:00.72 "Why are you afraid? Why do you fret? Won't He take care of you? 00:46:00.72\00:46:09.30 Even in death, won't He have the last word?" Make God first, and 00:46:09.30\00:46:21.08 He'll make it last... and, one day, last and last and last 00:46:21.08\00:46:27.08 forever. Ah, Jesus again here -- red-letter words, last time. 00:46:27.25\00:46:29.98 Verse 22. 00:46:29.98\00:46:31.39 Now final line, verse 31. "So seek God's kingdom, and all 00:46:45.90\00:46:50.77 these things that you're fretting about will be added to 00:46:50.77\00:46:55.98 you." 00:46:55.98\00:46:57.11 "Seek ye first the kingdom of God," as the King James puts it. Make God first, and He'll make 00:46:57.28\00:47:03.59 it last. He did it for Elijah, He did it for the widow, He's 00:47:03.59\00:47:07.42 done it for millions and millions of human beings, He does it for the little ravens. 00:47:07.42\00:47:11.23 He will take care of you. I promise -- No,Hepromises, "I will take care of you. 00:47:11.23\00:47:15.43 I will take care of you." I don't know what is the knot in your stomach today. 00:47:15.43\00:47:19.50 Some of you are so now bound up in fear and anxiety. You have hardly the courage to 00:47:19.50\00:47:27.38 face a new day. You can face that new day because the Creator 00:47:27.38\00:47:33.21 who designed you is beside you 24/7. He will take care of you. I love this line from 00:47:33.21\00:47:41.06 "Education." 00:47:41.06\00:47:42.12 It's all through the Cross. It's all through the Cross -- every blessing, every blessing. 00:47:55.57\00:48:06.21 So, I get a letter, e-mail, from one of our viewers, all right? 00:48:06.21\00:48:11.29 I'm sure a very dear person. I have no idea who she is. I have 00:48:14.76\00:48:18.19 no idea where she lives -- not in this area. And the e-mail begins this way -- "Okay, Pastor 00:48:18.19\00:48:24.87 Dwight." I'm gonna tell you something. When you get an e-mail and the first words are, 00:48:24.87\00:48:29.67 "Okay -- Okay, Pastor Dwight --" [ Inhales sharply ] Ooh. What's 00:48:29.67\00:48:34.18 following? "I took the tithe challenge." Now, what's she talking about? Well, one of our 00:48:34.18\00:48:38.05 outlets is still playing sermons from two, three, four years ago. And at one time, I said, "Hey, 00:48:38.05\00:48:41.82 listen, you don't believe that God can take care of you? Give 00:48:41.82\00:48:45.39 Him a 90-day test. Give him a 90-day test and say, 'God, I'm going to return everything 00:48:45.39\00:48:49.06 that's yours. First 10%, that's tithed. That's Yours. You can 00:48:49.06\00:48:52.66 have it all.' Just give Him 90 days, and see if He'll not come in." So she writes, "I took the 00:48:52.66\00:48:56.93 tithe challenge. NOW --" all caps -- "this month, the third 00:48:56.93\00:49:00.30 month, my Social Security income --" she's on fixed income -- "went from $868 to $745 per 00:49:00.30\00:49:06.34 month because the state stopped paying my Medicaid healthcare and I have to pay for my own out 00:49:06.34\00:49:10.11 of my own income. Tell me how that is a blessing for returning 00:49:10.11\00:49:14.42 to God his tithe." [ Inhales sharply ] "I'm saying aloud with Job, 'THOUGH HE SLAY ME, I WILL 00:49:14.42\00:49:20.29 TRUST HIM --" all caps. Please pray for my feeble faith, my 00:49:20.29\00:49:24.16 struggling faith. Thank you in advance. I'll let you know how God answers our prayer." 00:49:24.16\00:49:29.63 Ooh. Pressure's on. This came the 1st of April. 22 days later, 00:49:29.63\00:49:35.40 here comes her answer. And it doesn't begin with "okay." 00:49:35.40\00:49:39.64 [ Laughter ] "I recently e-mailed you to tell you that I 00:49:39.64\00:49:43.55 took your 90-day tithe challenge and my Social Security income dropped by over $100. 00:49:43.55\00:49:46.58 I told you I trusted God because I don't believe He lies, and when He said to PROVE --" all 00:49:46.58\00:49:51.02 caps -- "PROVE Him, so I did. I just needed prayer to keep my 00:49:51.02\00:49:55.59 faith strong. Well, I checked my balance today, and instead of the $100, there was $285 in my 00:49:55.59\00:50:04.30 account." Wow! And I know what you're thinking. [ Chuckles ] 00:50:04.30\00:50:08.00 You are thinking, "You know what? That's chump change. 00:50:08.00\00:50:13.78 Big deal, going from $100 to $285." But, my friend, that's 00:50:13.78\00:50:19.01 precisely my point. This little widow, who had very little, got more, and you, with 00:50:19.01\00:50:23.99 all that you have, are you trusting the same Creator God? Or are you holding it all for 00:50:23.99\00:50:31.19 yourself? "This is mine. I earned it. Nobodygets this." 00:50:31.19\00:50:38.03 Is that what you're doing? Ah. What could lead a little widow 00:50:38.03\00:50:45.14 with an e-mail to take on this challenge? Oh, she found a 00:50:45.14\00:50:49.78 promise and a command. I want to share with you what she found. 00:50:49.78\00:50:51.81 It's Malachi 3:10. You've probably read this before, but 00:50:51.81\00:50:54.65 may I read it in your hearing? 00:50:54.65\00:50:56.05 God speaking -- "'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, 00:50:56.22\00:50:59.19 that there may be food in my house. 00:50:59.19\00:51:01.16 And test me --'" "'PROVE --'" all caps, she puts it -- 00:51:01.16\00:51:03.96 King James -- "'Prove me in this,' says the Lord Almighty, 00:51:03.96\00:51:06.83 "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven 00:51:06.83\00:51:09.46 and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room 00:51:09.46\00:51:12.10 enough to store it.'" "I want you to test me," God 00:51:12.10\00:51:14.44 says, "because I know that what I've just commanded you is 00:51:14.44\00:51:17.11 counterintuitive. I know it doesn't make sense to 00:51:17.11\00:51:20.41 give a 10th away and then expect to have more when the month is 00:51:20.41\00:51:24.51 over. I understand that, but I rule 00:51:24.51\00:51:27.02 the universe, and I need your permission. 00:51:27.02\00:51:29.85 If you will return what is mine -- because it's not yours 00:51:29.85\00:51:33.56 anyway. If you will return what is mine, 00:51:33.56\00:51:36.32 you're telling me, 'I need You to run the whole shebang for 00:51:36.32\00:51:40.13 me.' I will run the entire outfit for 00:51:40.13\00:51:42.70 you is you tell me... I'm first. 00:51:42.70\00:51:48.74 You make me first, and I will make it last and last and last. 00:51:48.74\00:51:56.51 Make me first. That's because I'm not going to break your free 00:51:56.68\00:52:02.35 choice. I have to know, am I first? Show me. You show me. 00:52:02.35\00:52:09.69 I'll step right in. Make me first, and I will make it last not just for 90 days, 00:52:09.69\00:52:16.46 not just for 90 years, but do you know what? I'll make it last 00:52:16.46\00:52:21.44 forever and ever. Even to Tracy's family, I'll make that 00:52:21.44\00:52:25.21 promise. Forever and ever, I will restore her one day soon, and forever and ever, you have 00:52:25.21\00:52:32.31 her." Just ask Elijah. Just ask that little widow. Just ask the 00:52:38.89\00:52:45.33 widow with the e-mail. Just ask the ravens. Make Him first, and 00:52:45.33\00:52:53.34 He will make it last and last and last. I don't know about you, but I want to say amen to 00:52:53.34\00:53:00.54 that promise.
