So now, come forward as we sing 00:11:33.66\00:11:37.09 "Christ Alone," and lay your burdens at the foot of the 00:11:37.09\00:11:40.63 cross. Nice to see you on this 00:16:19.17\00:16:23.01 Easter Sabbath. A little cold out, little wet out. 00:16:23.01\00:16:29.15 But a lot of warmth in our hearts. Nice to have all of you 00:16:29.15\00:16:32.99 here. We have some visitors here. Always glad to have you. We've got the regulars. 00:16:32.99\00:16:37.43 Yep, I see that. Thank you, Deacon Jones, for that, and thank you, boys and 00:16:37.43\00:16:43.93 girls, for bringing that offering forward. This story is 00:16:43.93\00:16:49.34 from my story scout, Sharon Dudgeon. 00:16:49.34\00:16:53.24 She runs the WAUS radio station. She found this for me. 00:16:53.41\00:16:56.85 It's from Titusville, Florida. Anybody here been to 00:16:56.85\00:16:59.71 Titusville, Florida? I'd like to be in 00:16:59.71\00:17:01.78 Titusville, Florida, right now. Wouldn't that be wonderful? 00:17:01.78\00:17:04.22 Titusville, Florida, a little boy named Mason -- anybody here 00:17:04.22\00:17:07.06 named Mason? -- he's going to eat with Mom and Dad in 00:17:07.06\00:17:09.59 'O' Brady's Restaurant in Titusville, Florida, a few weeks 00:17:09.59\00:17:12.66 ago. As he goes in, he is so excited 00:17:12.66\00:17:14.93 because there is a little place in the restaurant, a little play 00:17:14.93\00:17:18.57 area for children. 00:17:18.57\00:17:20.47 So he says, "After I've eaten my food, Mommy and Daddy, can I go over there and play while you're 00:17:20.64\00:17:24.01 still eating?" "Yes, you may, Mason, but you eat all your food 00:17:24.01\00:17:27.78 first." Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum. He's gone. He's over in that 00:17:27.78\00:17:31.65 play area. There's nobody else there. No children there. Just himself. He looks at this, he 00:17:31.65\00:17:35.05 looks at that. [ Gasps ] Ooh! Have you seen one of these? 00:17:35.05\00:17:38.35 Have you seen these? It's a big machine like this, glass windows 00:17:38.35\00:17:41.82 all the way around, big machine. Inside, there are toys! But you have to put some money 00:17:41.82\00:17:45.49 in the machine, and it has this big claw that comes down. Have 00:17:45.49\00:17:48.96 you seen those? Big claw comes down, and it grabs a toy, and you get a toy. Oh! Oh! 00:17:48.96\00:17:54.14 "Oh, no," he says. "I don't have any money. I do not have any 00:17:54.14\00:17:58.27 money at all. What am I gonna do?" Oh! Wow. I didn't see that." As he got down low, he 00:17:58.27\00:18:04.51 realized -- don't ask me how -- but that if he would just kind of let all this air out... 00:18:04.51\00:18:10.49 [ Breathing heavily ] [ Groaning ] He could crawl through that 00:18:10.49\00:18:14.72 hole. He could get through that hole. He would come up the other side, inside, upside-down, and 00:18:14.72\00:18:19.66 he -- Boom! He's inside the glass box with all these toys! 00:18:19.66\00:18:23.63 "Which one shall I play with now? I don't know!" He starts playing with them all. 00:18:23.63\00:18:29.57 Finally, he looks -- He says, "Oh, I need to leave. Well -- 00:18:29.57\00:18:34.18 Oops. There's no way out!" You can get out the way you came in! 00:18:34.18\00:18:40.35 Impossible! Let me see a picture of Mason. Oh, I think he looks 00:18:40.35\00:18:47.16 very, very worried. He looks very -- Look at him crying. 00:18:47.16\00:18:52.39 He's like, "Help! Help! Help! Help! Help! Help!" Nobody can 00:18:52.39\00:18:57.73 hear him! Finally -- oh, finally -- Jeremy House, a volunteer firefighter, he hears a child, 00:18:57.73\00:19:03.24 he looks -- [ Gasps ] He said, "Hey! Call 911! We got to go!" 00:19:03.24\00:19:07.14 Phoom! He runs over there, and soon the firemen are there. Let's see the next picture. 00:19:07.14\00:19:12.05 They're working around that. They're saying, "There's got to be a way to get this boy." 00:19:12.05\00:19:14.82 "No, you know what, let's just leave him there. He's gonna be 00:19:14.82\00:19:17.89 happy the rest of his life. He has toys. Just leave him there! 00:19:17.89\00:19:20.29 He doesn't need to go home!" [ Laughs ] They found a way! They found a way and got little 00:19:20.29\00:19:27.96 Mason out. Hallelujah! You know, when I saw that story 00:19:27.96\00:19:32.27 about Mason, I said, "Hey, wait a minute, some people say that when you go into the grave, 00:19:32.27\00:19:37.21 there's no way out. You are stuck forever in that grave!" 00:19:37.21\00:19:40.88 That's what they said about Jesus. "If you go in that grave, 00:19:40.88\00:19:43.81 you'll never come out again." But guess what? He came out! He came out of what they said 00:19:43.81\00:19:50.15 could never become out of. And because He did, He's coming soon 00:19:50.15\00:19:58.03 so that you and me -- we all can come out. What do you say to 00:19:58.03\00:20:02.66 that? Let's clap. Let's just clap if we're happy for Jesus at opening up the door. 00:20:02.66\00:20:07.97 We're not trapped! We're not trapped! Jesus is alive and He's 00:20:07.97\00:20:15.08 coming back to get us out. Hallelujah. Who would like to 00:20:15.08\00:20:21.25 thank Jesus? Young man, your hand was up. Who would like to thank Jesus? Come on. Come on 00:20:21.25\00:20:27.32 up. What's your name? I like those glasses. What's your name? 00:20:27.32\00:20:31.26 >> Jaciel. >> Jaciel. Jaciel. Thank Jesus with Jaciel for getting us 00:20:36.93\00:20:42.00 out. >> Thank you, Jesus, for this day, and help us to be nice. And thank you, Jesus, for 00:20:42.00\00:20:51.18 getting us out and dying on the cross for us so the sins can go away and the happiness can come 00:20:51.18\00:20:58.39 to us and help us, that we can have a good day in Sabbath 00:20:58.39\00:21:03.59 today. Have a seat, please. 00:23:58.80\00:24:02.14 You have to suppose that it's a bit instructive, this business 00:24:09.41\00:24:12.85 of the story of Easter that we just heard a moment ago as we 00:24:12.85\00:24:16.18 began this glorious worship service. 00:24:16.18\00:24:18.82 It's a bit instructive for us, how that story in the particular version we read addresses, it 00:24:18.99\00:24:27.60 seems, one of the great fears that is no longer a great fear. 00:24:27.60\00:24:36.14 You come to any American, and you say, "Listen, what are you 00:24:36.30\00:24:40.18 afraid of?" And Americans over the years 00:24:40.18\00:24:42.94 have said, "Well, death and public speaking." 00:24:42.94\00:24:47.38 It's just always in the surveys. 00:24:47.38\00:24:51.02 But a survey was released this last fall from Chapman 00:24:51.82\00:24:56.59 University. It's the fourth annual survey, a survey of American fears. 1,200 Americans 00:24:56.59\00:25:03.00 across this land were asked the question "What makes you afraid 00:25:03.00\00:25:10.54 or very afraid?" Incredible. I want to read to you the top 10. 00:25:10.54\00:25:16.04 I have all 48 here, but let me just read to you the top 10. Would these have been one of 00:25:16.04\00:25:21.22 yours? We'll start with number 10, air pollution. 00:25:21.22\00:25:27.82 Number 9, North Korea using weapons. Number 8, global 00:25:27.82\00:25:34.36 warming and climate change. Number 7, the U.S. will be involved in another World War. 00:25:34.36\00:25:39.67 Number 6, high medical bills. Number 5, not having enough money for the future. 00:25:39.67\00:25:44.54 Number 4, pollution of drinking water. Number 3, pollution of 00:25:44.54\00:25:48.34 oceans, rivers, and lakes. Number 2, American Healthcare Act, or "Trumpcare." 00:25:48.34\00:25:53.05 Either one. Number one -- corrupt government officials. 00:25:53.05\00:25:58.62 The top fears of America this Easter. And where is "fear of 00:25:58.62\00:26:04.53 death?" It's number 48. And where is "fear of public 00:26:04.53\00:26:06.36 speaking?" Number 52. Something's changed. This list 00:26:06.36\00:26:14.04 is so significant, that next Sabbath, you and I are gonna spend a few moments just looking 00:26:14.04\00:26:18.34 carefully at really what is being told to us. Because listen, folks, if we're gonna 00:26:18.34\00:26:24.31 engage America's heart, we have to address America's fears. And they aren't the old fears that 00:26:24.31\00:26:32.99 we thought they were. We'll talk more about that next week. I'll 00:26:32.99\00:26:38.96 explain this. Christopher Bader, a Professor of Sociology at 00:26:39.13\00:26:41.63 Chapman University led the team effort. 00:26:41.63\00:26:43.87 He makes this -- He concludes this. 00:26:43.87\00:26:45.53 Put it on the screen. Fascinating. 00:26:45.53\00:26:48.40 Quoting him... Hmm. 00:26:50.74\00:26:58.55 What was the question the girls asked on the way to the tomb? 00:27:04.92\00:27:07.79 "Who will roll this stone away for us?" 00:27:07.79\00:27:13.06 Truth of the matter is, you and I, we may not be our fears in 00:27:13.06\00:27:18.27 that top 10, but there is not a soul here that doesn't have a 00:27:18.27\00:27:20.37 fear, that does not have an uncertainty, that does not have 00:27:20.37\00:27:23.91 an anxiety that is intimidated by this huge stone, whatever it 00:27:23.91\00:27:28.11 may be in your life. This huge stone that is blocking 00:27:28.11\00:27:31.28 your way, and you're asking the question -- "Who's gonna move 00:27:31.28\00:27:35.05 this stone for me?" Can anybody roll it away, 00:27:35.05\00:27:42.49 or am I destined to be pinned to this cold earth with that fear? 00:27:42.49\00:27:47.50 Let's go back to that Easter story. 00:27:47.50\00:27:52.00 Gospel of Mark. Open your Bible, please, to the 00:27:52.00\00:27:54.07 Gospel of Mark. Chapter 16. 00:27:54.07\00:27:56.17 He has a little slant to it, and you'll see the way it ends, 00:27:56.17\00:28:00.68 that no other Gospel writer demonstrates. 00:28:00.68\00:28:03.98 Mark 16. I'm in the New King James 00:28:03.98\00:28:08.35 version today. You didn't bring your own Bible, 00:28:08.35\00:28:12.35 grab the pew Bible in front of you. 00:28:12.35\00:28:13.59 We've got some of our friendly ushers also coming your way. 00:28:13.59\00:28:16.73 They have study guides. It's no fill-in-the-blank study 00:28:16.73\00:28:19.16 guide today. It's a "keep the study guide for 00:28:19.16\00:28:21.60 the quotations" day. And you're gonna want these 00:28:21.60\00:28:24.43 quotations. All right, so this is Mark 16:1. 00:28:24.43\00:28:28.00 They read it to us just a moment ago. 00:28:30.11\00:28:33.24 Needless to say. 00:29:01.44\00:29:03.34 Now, watch this -- Verse 8. 00:29:21.36\00:29:23.26 Fear. 00:29:31.87\00:29:34.50 We all have them. Attitude. Fear. 00:29:34.97\00:29:41.41 In the shadows of Jesus' now-empty tomb, there's a question we need to confront. 00:29:41.58\00:29:48.85 How important, how vital is this thing, this spirit, this attitude that's within us? 00:29:48.85\00:30:03.53 How important is attitude? Just a few weeks ago, my friend Sherry Davis sent me an e-mail. 00:30:03.53\00:30:09.00 It was Friday afternoon. I'm trying to get through my 00:30:09.00\00:30:12.07 e-mails. I'm here at the office all alone, and she says, "Hey, Dwight, I've read something 00:30:12.07\00:30:15.24 you're gonna be interested in. You're gonna like it." So she 00:30:15.24\00:30:21.58 sends me a link. And I shoot her an e-mail back. "Thanks so much, Sherry. Blessings on you. 00:30:21.58\00:30:25.22 Bye-bye. Oh, I will read it, don't worry about it. See ya." 00:30:25.22\00:30:28.92 But then -- and this happens to you -- you say, "I should have 00:30:28.92\00:30:33.23 read it." I'll forget. I just know I'll forget to go to the 00:30:33.23\00:30:35.90 link. So I quickly go to the link. It's an article written by a young Australian woman. 00:30:35.90\00:30:40.40 Her name -- Maritza Brunt. And in the article, she quotes Charles Swindoll, and when I 00:30:40.40\00:30:48.64 read those words from Swindoll, I tell you what, something just 00:30:48.64\00:30:52.95 came over me. Those words are still reverberating in my soul, and I just have to share those 00:30:52.95\00:30:57.62 words with you. Do you know who Charles Swindoll is? 00:30:57.62\00:31:00.22 He's the popular American writer. He's been a pastor. 00:31:00.22\00:31:03.46 He's a university chancellor. 00:31:03.46\00:31:05.99 These words are in that study guide that you'll take home. 00:31:06.16\00:31:08.26 You'll never forget them. I'll put them on the screen for 00:31:08.26\00:31:10.40 you. Chuck Swindoll writing... 00:31:10.40\00:31:14.07 There's that word. 00:31:22.64\00:31:24.55 And then here's the keeper, here's that last line. 00:31:44.83\00:31:47.54 End quote. You like that? Attitude! 00:32:00.72\00:32:06.96 We all have one. In fact, attitude pretty much 00:32:06.96\00:32:10.83 comes down to this. "No can do" or "Yes, can do." 00:32:10.83\00:32:17.60 Now, if like me, you've grown up in a country where English is 00:32:17.60\00:32:20.30 not the language and very few knew it when I was there in 00:32:20.30\00:32:22.80 Japan. You know, you often run into 00:32:22.80\00:32:24.51 "No can do." "Oh, no, no, no, no, no!" 00:32:24.51\00:32:26.34 That's the only English they know. 00:32:26.34\00:32:28.01 "No can do. No, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No can do." 00:32:28.01\00:32:31.38 You never hear anybody say, "Yes, can do," do you? 00:32:31.38\00:32:35.68 No. It makes you wonder, are we just 00:32:35.68\00:32:39.22 automatically wired when we're born for "No can do?" 00:32:39.22\00:32:43.12 I mean, why is it -- why is it that we can say "No," just like 00:32:43.12\00:32:47.23 that, and "Yes" is just like dragging it out of you? 00:32:47.23\00:32:49.63 The nominating committee calls you up and they're at work right 00:32:49.63\00:32:51.90 now. The nominating committee calls 00:32:51.90\00:32:53.64 you up and you say, "No can do." "I can't do that." 00:32:53.64\00:32:56.97 Oh, yes, you can. Why are we wired that way? 00:32:56.97\00:33:02.41 "No can do." "Yes, can do." 00:33:02.41\00:33:05.41 Which is it? And you want to guess which way 00:33:05.41\00:33:08.28 the resurrected Christ tilts the needle? 00:33:08.28\00:33:11.12 I'm gonna tell you in case you're struggling to figure 00:33:11.12\00:33:13.09 out the answer. There is no question. 00:33:13.09\00:33:14.96 The magnetic north of Holy Scripture always points its 00:33:14.96\00:33:18.76 needle to "Yes, can do." Come on. 00:33:18.76\00:33:25.27 12 spies reconnoitering this raw Pagan land called Canaan. 00:33:25.27\00:33:30.94 They come back. 10 of them say, "No can do." 00:33:30.94\00:33:34.31 But two of them insist -- "Yes, can do." 00:33:34.31\00:33:38.38 I'm telling you the truth. The magnetic north of the 00:33:38.38\00:33:43.52 Holy Scripture always points the needle to "Yes, can do." 00:33:43.52\00:33:50.49 Here's another one. Lone prophet. 00:33:50.49\00:33:52.39 By the way, one of the greatest prophets. 00:33:52.39\00:33:54.23 Lone prophet. Against the hordes of Israel. 00:33:54.23\00:33:57.33 Atop a mountain that is about to be nuked. 00:33:57.33\00:34:02.07 A mountain called Carmel. And what does Israel say? 00:34:02.07\00:34:05.04 "No can do! No can do! No can do!" 00:34:05.04\00:34:06.98 The lone prophet thunders "Yes, can do," and fire comes 00:34:06.98\00:34:10.65 down and incinerates that summit. 00:34:10.65\00:34:14.02 Because the magnetic needle of Holy Scripture always tilts to 00:34:14.02\00:34:19.82 "Yes, can do." And, oh, by the way, the 00:34:19.82\00:34:22.72 Scripture doesn't play heroes and hide all the defects. 00:34:22.72\00:34:25.63 12 hours later, the same prophet, because he's insulted 00:34:25.63\00:34:31.17 Jezebel, who screams into this torrential downpour -- "I will 00:34:31.17\00:34:37.27 kill you if it's the last thing I do!" 00:34:37.27\00:34:40.94 That same "Yes, can do" prophet, in now utter fear, flees with 00:34:40.94\00:34:46.68 the cry, "I quit! No can do!" Apparently, the needle can go 00:34:46.68\00:34:52.65 like this pretty fast in all of us. 00:34:52.65\00:34:55.62 But the magnetic north of Holy Scripture always tilts the 00:34:55.62\00:34:58.79 needle to "Yes, can do." Take the God of the universe, 00:34:58.79\00:35:01.76 made flesh as he's sobbing alone in a dark and treacherous 00:35:01.76\00:35:04.83 garden. "No can do. Abba, Father. 00:35:04.83\00:35:06.87 No can do. No can do." But through the dark, through 00:35:06.87\00:35:10.61 the mysterious shadows, a voice comes, "Oh, no, my son. 00:35:10.61\00:35:14.04 Yes, can do. Yes, can do." 12 hours later, 00:35:14.04\00:35:20.28 when that same Jesus is hanging on the center cross of Calvary, 00:35:20.28\00:35:24.42 the gaping, stunned universe is concluding "No can do" has won. 00:35:24.42\00:35:31.79 "No can do" has won. Not knowing that 36 more hours 00:35:31.79\00:35:37.93 and there will be such a seismic shock that it goes off the 00:35:37.93\00:35:42.37 Richter scale inside that sepulchre, and with blazing 00:35:42.37\00:35:46.64 light, "Yes, can do" comes marching out, forever the 00:35:46.64\00:35:50.85 victor. "Yes, can do." 00:35:50.85\00:35:56.05 The needle of Scripture. The needle of attitude always 00:35:56.05\00:36:05.53 always points to "Yes, can do." You don't believe me? 00:36:05.53\00:36:11.20 Let me share with you the greatest "Yes, can do" line 00:36:11.20\00:36:13.64 you've ever read in your life. Here it is. 00:36:13.64\00:36:15.84 Move from Mark where you were. Go to Philippians. 00:36:15.84\00:36:18.57 Find the little book of Philippians. 00:36:18.57\00:36:20.04 Okay, that'll take you a few seconds. 00:36:20.04\00:36:21.51 Philippians, moving towards the end of the New Testament. 00:36:21.51\00:36:24.15 Keep going. Philippians. Philippians 4. 00:36:24.15\00:36:26.75 Find that chapter. Short little book. 00:36:26.75\00:36:29.48 Paul's in prison. Mr. Big "Yes, Can Do," by the 00:36:29.48\00:36:31.59 way, one of the biggest "Yes, can do" in the history 00:36:31.59\00:36:34.09 of Christianity. Attitude. 00:36:34.09\00:36:37.13 And he writes this. He's in prison and he writes 00:36:37.13\00:36:39.76 this, Verse 13. Put it on the screen, please. 00:36:39.76\00:36:42.56 Verse 13. Let's read it outloud together. 00:36:42.56\00:36:45.20 Let's do that one more time. 00:36:49.24\00:36:51.14 There they are, those two little words -- "can do." 00:36:54.28\00:36:57.91 "Can do." Yeah, but, Dwight, you said -- 00:36:57.91\00:37:02.15 You said that the magnetic north of Holy Scripture always points 00:37:02.15\00:37:05.89 the needle to "Yes, can do." There's no "Yes" in that. 00:37:05.89\00:37:10.49 You are really picky on an Easter weekend. 00:37:10.49\00:37:13.83 I can't believe that. You want a "yes," 00:37:13.83\00:37:16.43 I'll give you a "yes." Just turn a few pages back to 00:37:16.43\00:37:19.13 2 Corinthians 1. Come on, just a handful of pages 00:37:19.13\00:37:22.54 back. 2 Corinthians 1. 00:37:22.54\00:37:24.47 You want the "yes," here you go. 2 Corinthians 1.19. 00:37:24.47\00:37:29.04 Now, keep reading. Verse 20. 00:37:42.92\00:37:44.83 There's the "yes" you wanted. "Yes, can do." 00:37:53.03\00:37:56.84 All the promises of God. 00:37:56.84\00:37:59.41 All of them are "yes" in Christ. Wow. Why is that? 00:38:00.28\00:38:10.35 It's because Jesus is God's all-caps -- Jesus is God's all-caps "YES, CAN DO" creator, 00:38:10.35\00:38:20.66 and "YES, CAN DO" savior. All caps! He created the entire 00:38:20.66\00:38:26.30 universe. This "YES, CAN DO" mind and being creates the 00:38:26.30\00:38:32.94 entire universe. "Yes, can do." Creator of the universe. Beloved savior of the world. 00:38:32.94\00:38:38.51 "Yes, can do." He saves the entire human race. In the death 00:38:38.51\00:38:47.39 that he poured out at Calvary. "Yes, can do." That's why the 00:38:47.39\00:38:54.10 magnetic north of Holy Scripture always tilts the needle to "Yes, can do." Because that's the way 00:38:54.10\00:38:58.90 God is. God so loved the world. And, by the way, when he loved you and me, we were at our 00:38:58.90\00:39:03.00 un-loveliest. Write that down. "Un-loveliest." That's what you 00:39:03.00\00:39:08.04 were. Un-loveliest. And he looked at you and he looked at 00:39:08.04\00:39:12.48 me, and he said, "Hey, Gabriel, yes, can do." 00:39:12.48\00:39:15.95 We can get her. We can get him! We can get them. Let's try. 00:39:16.12\00:39:24.06 "Yes, can do." That's why. By the way, just last week -- 00:39:24.06\00:39:28.43 not this week, but the week before --Christianity Today 00:39:28.43\00:39:31.47 came out with this spectacular very moving commemorative 00:39:31.47\00:39:34.77 edition in honor of Billy Graham -- the great 00:39:34.77\00:39:37.81 Evangelist Billy Graham, who, by the way, was the founder of 00:39:37.81\00:39:40.78 Christianity Today. The Evangelical magazine exists 00:39:40.78\00:39:43.18 today because he said, "We need a magazine for Evangelicals." 00:39:43.18\00:39:46.11 So this is just chock-full of stories and articles from front 00:39:46.11\00:39:49.15 to back, and one of the stories told me about how when 00:39:49.15\00:39:51.89 Billy Graham ever sat down in front of a microphone -- 00:39:51.89\00:39:54.59 So he's gonna give an interview, so he's gonna check the mic. 00:39:54.59\00:39:57.63 They'd say, "Reverend Graham, can we just test your 00:39:57.63\00:39:59.79 microphone?" Oh, he's standing up in the 00:39:59.79\00:40:01.46 stadium. Tonight it'll be filled, but 00:40:01.46\00:40:03.06 he's standing in that empty stadium. 00:40:03.06\00:40:04.63 They said, "Mr. Graham, would you speak into the mic?" 00:40:04.63\00:40:06.80 Every time he's given an opportunity in his lifetime, do 00:40:06.80\00:40:10.47 you know what he said? "For God so loved the world, 00:40:10.47\00:40:13.88 that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in 00:40:13.88\00:40:17.95 Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." 00:40:17.95\00:40:21.42 And you know why he did that? Because there may be some 00:40:21.42\00:40:24.12 technician somewhere, this will be the only Gospel he will hear 00:40:24.12\00:40:28.26 as he adjusts the gauges. "For God so loved the world..." 00:40:28.26\00:40:32.63 "Yes, can do!" When he looked at you and he 00:40:32.63\00:40:35.70 looked at me. Wow. 00:40:35.70\00:40:36.93 But the question is, let's be honest -- 00:40:36.93\00:40:39.60 I mean, how do we experience this attitude adjustment that 00:40:39.60\00:40:43.34 will turn us from the usual "No can do" default? 00:40:43.34\00:40:46.51 Because that's the way we were born, and by the way, the older 00:40:46.51\00:40:50.45 you get, the more "No can do" becomes your language. 00:40:50.45\00:40:54.58 Sorry. How can we can go through an 00:40:54.58\00:40:57.49 attitude adjustment so that we can move from this default 00:40:57.49\00:41:00.66 "No can do" to the mighty appealing "Yes, can do" attitude 00:41:00.66\00:41:03.83 of God? How can it happen? 00:41:03.83\00:41:05.23 I'm gonna show you how, and it is so simple, you're not gonna 00:41:05.23\00:41:07.76 believe it. Let's go back to 00:41:07.76\00:41:09.20 Philippians 4:13. You don't even have to go back. 00:41:09.20\00:41:11.57 It goes like this... 00:41:11.57\00:41:13.47 Now, it turns out that the oldest manuscripts in Greek do 00:41:17.34\00:41:21.58 not have the name of Christ. Mnh-mnh. 00:41:21.58\00:41:25.68 And, generally, the old manuscripts are the most 00:41:25.68\00:41:27.95 accurate. So newer translations -- some of 00:41:27.95\00:41:29.82 you were following along in your newer translations. 00:41:29.82\00:41:31.95 Newer translations render it this way. 00:41:31.95\00:41:33.49 In fact, let me just show you. David Bentley Hart. 00:41:33.49\00:41:36.89 He is down here at Notre Dame, but he came out withYale Press, 00:41:36.89\00:41:39.86 a new translation of the New Testament. 00:41:39.86\00:41:41.93 Terribly wooden but extremely engaging. 00:41:41.93\00:41:45.17 It's just called "The New Testament." 00:41:45.17\00:41:47.30 This is how he renders. We'll put it on the screen. 00:41:47.30\00:41:50.21 He's American Orthodox. He is an expert at Greek, okay? 00:41:52.41\00:41:56.14 So, who's this "him" that Paul is referring to? 00:42:01.82\00:42:05.05 Well, it's really not a huge discovery. 00:42:05.05\00:42:09.59 If you just look behind Verse 13 and then look twice after 00:42:09.59\00:42:13.09 Verse 13, it's Christ Jesus. Christ Jesus -- three times. 00:42:13.09\00:42:16.50 Christ Jesus. So it's a no-brainer case. 00:42:16.50\00:42:19.97 He's talking about Christ Jesus. However, if the antecedent still 00:42:19.97\00:42:25.81 remains uncertain, you could just as well say that the 00:42:25.81\00:42:31.68 antecedent to him is the Holy Spirit. 00:42:31.68\00:42:35.98 "Oh, you cannot, Dwight." Yes, you can. Let me show you. 00:42:35.98\00:42:38.25 You still here in 2 Corinthians 1? 00:42:38.25\00:42:40.82 Look at Verse 20. We just read that, but we'll go 00:42:40.82\00:42:42.82 beyond. Verse 20. 00:42:42.82\00:42:45.16 Now, keep reading. 00:42:48.80\00:42:50.70 Keep reading. 00:42:54.97\00:42:56.87 The gift of the Holy Spirit -- Did you catch that? -- is the 00:43:04.95\00:43:08.95 divine guarantee that all God's promises are a mighty "yes," 00:43:08.95\00:43:13.19 an almighty "yes" in Christ Jesus. 00:43:13.19\00:43:16.06 That's it, right there. So Philippians 4:13 could 00:43:16.06\00:43:18.69 actually read this way. Let's read this one out loud 00:43:18.69\00:43:21.36 together. It could actually read this way. 00:43:21.36\00:43:23.87 Yep. Speaking of which, the other 00:43:29.27\00:43:34.01 day, our twice-retired dear Pastor Don -- Don Dronen -- was 00:43:34.01\00:43:38.91 having an early-morning worship and he sent me a quotation he 00:43:38.91\00:43:41.88 came across. This is so dynamite, I have to 00:43:41.88\00:43:44.12 share it with you right now. It's in your study guide. 00:43:44.12\00:43:46.45 You'll take it home. But put in on the screen, 00:43:46.45\00:43:48.39 please. 00:43:48.39\00:43:50.29 In and out. "Daily" -- there's that word we 00:44:05.41\00:44:08.54 came to know. 00:44:08.54\00:44:11.01 So she's saying, "Lookit, in front of you -- you're on a 00:44:19.15\00:44:21.42 journey, and in front of you are these vast fields..." 00:44:21.42\00:44:24.59 Now, keep going! 00:44:28.60\00:44:30.50 When that Holy Spirit comes into you, when he takes up residence, 00:44:36.97\00:44:41.61 every day, vast sources of power. 00:44:41.61\00:44:44.25 Now, she says..." 00:44:44.25\00:44:46.15 She's quoting David now. "Dear Lord, you may take from me 00:44:47.02\00:44:50.55 whatever you wish. No kidding. 00:44:50.55\00:44:52.12 You may take from me whatever you wish, but what I'm asking 00:44:52.12\00:44:54.82 you is, please, do not take the Holy Spirit from me." 00:44:54.82\00:44:57.29 And then her last line... 00:44:57.29\00:44:59.19 Hey, come on. Time out, time out. 00:45:02.80\00:45:04.27 Let me just ask you this. Wouldn't you love to be daily 00:45:04.27\00:45:07.44 inspired with the omnipotence of God, this "Yes, can do" attitude 00:45:07.44\00:45:11.37 every day through the Holy Spirit? 00:45:11.37\00:45:13.27 Wouldn't you love to have that? Wouldn't you like to be daily 00:45:13.27\00:45:15.88 ignited by the Holy Spirit so that you face your day no matter 00:45:15.88\00:45:19.18 what is going on in your life right now -- what is happening 00:45:19.18\00:45:22.22 on this campus, what is happening in your career, it 00:45:22.22\00:45:24.72 doesn't matter. But you face the day now with 00:45:24.72\00:45:27.39 this "Yes, can do" attitude that only the Spirit of Christ can 00:45:27.39\00:45:31.26 bring to you. Wouldn't that be something? 00:45:31.26\00:45:34.83 Every single day. "I can do all things through the 00:45:34.83\00:45:38.47 Holy Spirit who strengthens me." What a powerful case for the 00:45:38.47\00:45:42.04 daily baptism of the Spirit. I mean, just ask him every day. 00:45:42.04\00:45:44.64 Just ask him. You know what you can say? 00:45:44.64\00:45:46.51 "Dear God, would you give me the mind of Christ?" 00:45:46.51\00:45:51.38 Wait a minute, Philippians 2:5. "Let this mind be in you which 00:45:51.38\00:45:54.05 was also in..." How does it go? 00:45:54.05\00:45:55.85 "...also in Christ Jesus." But look at this. 00:45:55.85\00:45:57.92 In the New American Standard Bible -- put it on the screen, 00:45:57.92\00:46:00.62 please. New American Standard. 00:46:00.62\00:46:02.56 How does it read? 00:46:02.56\00:46:04.46 There it is. 00:46:05.43\00:46:07.30 What attitude? The "Yes, can do" attitude. 00:46:09.83\00:46:13.87 Have that attitude in yourselves. 00:46:13.87\00:46:16.67 Who better to bring the "Yes, can do" attitude to us, 00:46:16.67\00:46:19.91 that attitude of Jesus, than the Holy Spirit himself? 00:46:19.91\00:46:24.58 You say, "Yeah, but, Dwight, come on, come on, come on." 00:46:24.58\00:46:26.25 I mean, what are all these things? 00:46:26.25\00:46:27.68 "I can do all things." What are all these things? 00:46:27.68\00:46:31.15 Well, that's not rocket science, either. 00:46:31.15\00:46:33.42 All these things would be simply whatever God wants us to 00:46:33.42\00:46:36.39 experience, whatever God wants us to achieve. 00:46:36.39\00:46:38.99 Higher than the highest human thought? 00:46:38.99\00:46:40.56 That's what I want for you. I want the very best for you. 00:46:40.56\00:46:42.80 Whatever he asks, whatever he wants, whatever he wishes. 00:46:42.80\00:46:46.87 "Yes, can do." You know why you can say 00:46:46.87\00:46:49.57 "Yes, can do" to whatever God asks of you? 00:46:49.57\00:46:51.54 You can say "Yes, can do" simply because when God asks me to do 00:46:51.54\00:46:58.15 something, He empowers me to do that something. 00:46:58.15\00:47:02.75 Whatever He asks you to do, He'll empower you to do. 00:47:02.75\00:47:06.12 There's a line somewhere. Where is it found? 00:47:06.12\00:47:08.09 I have no idea. All his biddings are enablings. 00:47:08.09\00:47:11.49 If He says, "Hey, hey, hey, I'm gonna ask you to do this." 00:47:11.49\00:47:14.20 If you say, "Yes, can do," He says, "I got the power for 00:47:14.20\00:47:16.97 you." It's omnipotent, by the way. 00:47:16.97\00:47:18.87 You can have it all. Wow. 00:47:18.87\00:47:22.50 That's why Romans 8:28, by the way... 00:47:22.50\00:47:26.11 Some of you are going through a really rough time right now. 00:47:26.11\00:47:29.24 I know. Tough. It hasn't been any worse than 00:47:29.24\00:47:33.01 this. It hasn't been any worse than 00:47:33.01\00:47:35.45 this. But that's why Romans 8:28 00:47:35.45\00:47:40.36 whispers to you... "We know that all things -- all 00:47:40.36\00:47:45.93 things work together for those who love God and are called 00:47:45.93\00:47:51.60 according to His purpose." Everything. 00:47:51.60\00:47:54.20 Hey, hey, hey, hey. Shh, shh, shh, shh. Stop, stop. 00:47:54.20\00:47:57.81 It does not read -- some people think it does -- 00:47:57.81\00:48:00.14 It does not read "all things are good." 00:48:00.14\00:48:02.61 It does not declare all things good. 00:48:02.61\00:48:04.71 All things are not good. Some things are evil. 00:48:04.71\00:48:07.98 And what has happened to you is from the hand of an enemy who 00:48:07.98\00:48:10.99 seeks only your death. Who seeks only your death. 00:48:10.99\00:48:14.99 But as the translation reads... "But we know that God causes all 00:48:14.99\00:48:21.70 things to work for good to those who trust Him, who Love 00:48:21.70\00:48:26.53 him." You can take anything. 00:48:26.53\00:48:29.00 Look, He can take anything and turn it into the greatest win 00:48:29.00\00:48:33.81 you will ever experience. That's how he did it. 00:48:33.81\00:48:38.08 He took the worst of the worst and turned it into the best of 00:48:38.08\00:48:42.02 the best. Trust me," He says. "Trust me." 00:48:42.02\00:48:44.92 "Yes, can do." I want to hear "Yes, can do" 00:48:44.92\00:48:47.26 from you. Don't tell me "No can do." 00:48:47.26\00:48:48.89 That's why Jesus in the garden kept saying, "No can do. 00:48:48.89\00:48:51.56 Father, no can do. Abba, abba, no can do." 00:48:51.56\00:48:53.66 But finally, third prayer, God sweeps over him, "Oh, yes, you 00:48:53.66\00:48:57.50 can," and then he says, "Okay. Yes, can do. Your will. 00:48:57.50\00:49:03.61 Not what I want, what you want." And God will win through you 00:49:03.61\00:49:07.81 just like he won through the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:49:07.81\00:49:10.88 "Yes, can do." Ahh! I'm gonna share a secret 00:49:10.88\00:49:14.78 with you and tell you a story, and then sit down. 00:49:14.78\00:49:18.69 I'm gonna share a secret that you may not have known before. 00:49:18.69\00:49:21.99 And then tell you a story. There's one quotation, by the 00:49:21.99\00:49:28.20 way, that sets this up, that has "can do" written all over it. 00:49:28.20\00:49:31.27 I couldn't come to the end without sending this quotation 00:49:31.27\00:49:33.50 home with you, so I'm putting it on the screen. 00:49:33.50\00:49:35.37 It's from that classic, "Christ's Object Lessons." 00:49:35.37\00:49:37.37 You're gonna love it. This is your keeper. 00:49:37.37\00:49:40.14 No, no, no, no. It's not what you have. 00:49:51.95\00:49:55.09 I put them in all caps for you. 00:49:57.03\00:49:59.06 That would be me, "what I can do..." 00:50:03.26\00:50:06.07 Every soul that trusts Him. Now here come three 00:50:11.01\00:50:13.68 "He longs..." 00:50:13.68\00:50:15.58 He's standing by you right now, whatever it is you're going 00:50:17.35\00:50:19.48 through and it seems like there is a massive stone in front of 00:50:19.48\00:50:21.72 you, and you're not gonna get past this stone to eternity. 00:50:21.72\00:50:24.69 Here comes number two. 00:50:28.92\00:50:31.33 Don't sell him short! Ask for the biggest gift you 00:50:33.46\00:50:36.90 have ever asked for in your life! 00:50:36.90\00:50:39.37 Whatever the stone is that is in front of you right now -- 00:50:39.37\00:50:42.97 Is it divorce? Is it your health? 00:50:42.97\00:50:45.24 Is it your finances? It doesn't matter! 00:50:45.24\00:50:47.81 Ask him to move the stone! Just ask him. 00:50:47.81\00:50:52.18 Just ask him. 00:50:52.18\00:50:54.58 And then here's a line for our university community like ours. 00:51:00.29\00:51:03.32 You got four weeks left, but I'd be claiming that all through the 00:51:07.03\00:51:09.40 next four weeks. [ Laughter ] 00:51:09.40\00:51:11.77 It's just my counsel, humble as it is. 00:51:11.77\00:51:14.54 "Yes can do!" He can do it. I can do all things through 00:51:22.98\00:51:25.78 Christ. "I can do all things through the 00:51:25.78\00:51:27.95 Holy Spirit, who strengthens me." 00:51:27.95\00:51:30.29 Yep. That's the truth today. Go home with it. 00:51:30.29\00:51:32.55 You'll never have an Easter like this. 00:51:32.55\00:51:34.76 Go home with it. Your life will be changed. 00:51:34.76\00:51:37.43 Ask for an attitude adjustment. Move from your "No can do" to 00:51:37.43\00:51:40.66 your "Yes, can do." You'll be fine because let me 00:51:40.66\00:51:42.76 tell you a secret. You didn't know this, but I'm 00:51:42.76\00:51:44.73 gonna pass this onto you. People really love hanging with, 00:51:44.73\00:51:50.97 living with, working with, schooling with positive 00:51:50.97\00:51:59.51 attitude of others. They are the most popular people 00:51:59.51\00:52:04.62 on this campus. In that ad building, they're the 00:52:04.62\00:52:07.19 most popular people. Because when you're a 00:52:07.19\00:52:09.56 "Yes, can do" leader, when you have confidence, people 00:52:09.56\00:52:13.63 just line up right behind you. When you're a "Yes, can do" 00:52:13.63\00:52:16.90 follower, you line right up behind a "Yes, can do" leader 00:52:16.90\00:52:19.73 'cause it always takes one to draw up the other. 00:52:19.73\00:52:21.90 When you hang with someone who has a "Yes, can do" attitude -- 00:52:21.90\00:52:26.61 I mean, aren't they a joy to be around? 00:52:26.61\00:52:29.81 Come on, let's be honest. Aren't they a joy to be around? 00:52:29.81\00:52:31.81 I just being around them. Why? Because they lift my 00:52:31.81\00:52:34.05 confidence. They lift my hope. 00:52:34.05\00:52:35.48 They give me faith. They give me courage. 00:52:35.48\00:52:37.35 I feel like we can make this thing. 00:52:37.35\00:52:39.09 This isn't the end! Time of trouble going on? 00:52:39.09\00:52:43.39 This isn't the end. "Yes, can do." 00:52:43.39\00:52:47.96 When a leader demonstrates "Yes, can do" and a follower 00:52:47.96\00:52:50.60 demonstrates "Yes, can do," you got a winning combination. 00:52:50.60\00:52:53.37 And there is nothing you can't go through without the almighty 00:52:53.37\00:52:58.61 omnipotent, God of the universe, steps in for you. 00:52:58.61\00:53:01.88 Don't tell him how to do it. Ask him to do it. 00:53:01.88\00:53:06.48 Just ask him to do it. That's a little secret. 00:53:06.48\00:53:10.52 If you'll be the "Yes, can do" person in your little circle 00:53:10.52\00:53:12.89 where you live, in your dormitory, in your office, 00:53:12.89\00:53:15.26 you're the "Yes, can do" person, everybody will love being around 00:53:15.26\00:53:18.56 the water cooler with you. Why? Because you are positive. 00:53:18.56\00:53:22.60 "Yes, can do." "I can do all things through 00:53:22.60\00:53:27.27 Christ, or the Holy Spirit, who strengthens me." 00:53:27.27\00:53:30.14 All right. Here's that story. Karen and I, through the 00:53:30.14\00:53:34.91 kindness of a friend have been reading Max Lucado's book 00:53:34.91\00:53:37.81 "God Will Carry You Through." In this book is the story of 00:53:37.81\00:53:41.22 little Cooper and his mother and father. 00:53:41.22\00:53:44.02 Let me read the story to you. "Melanie Jasper says her son 00:53:44.02\00:53:47.86 Cooper -- I like that name -- was born with a smile on his 00:53:47.86\00:53:50.93 face. The dimple never left his cheek. 00:53:50.93\00:53:53.90 He won the hearts of every person he knew -- his three 00:53:53.90\00:53:56.20 older sisters, his parents, grandparents, teachers, and 00:53:56.20\00:53:58.60 friends. He loved to laugh and love. 00:53:58.60\00:54:01.47 His father J.J., confessing partiality, calls him 00:54:01.47\00:54:05.17 practically the perfect child. And Cooper was born to the 00:54:05.17\00:54:08.94 perfect family. Farm-dwelling, fun-loving, 00:54:08.94\00:54:12.08 God-seeking, and Christ-hungry, J.J. and Melanie poured out 00:54:12.08\00:54:16.12 their hearts into their four children. 00:54:16.12\00:54:18.42 J.J. cherished every moment he had with his only son. 00:54:18.42\00:54:21.69 That's why they were riding in the dune buggy on July 17th. 00:54:21.69\00:54:25.53 They intended to cut the grass together, but the lawn mower 00:54:25.53\00:54:28.56 needed a spark plug, and so while Melanie drove to town to 00:54:28.56\00:54:31.60 buy one, J.J. and 5-year-old Cooper seized the opportunity 00:54:31.60\00:54:34.64 for a quick ride. "You want to go with Daddy? 00:54:34.64\00:54:36.20 Let's go!" They had done this 1,000 times, 00:54:36.20\00:54:40.68 zipping down a dirt road in a roll-caged cart. 00:54:40.68\00:54:44.01 The ride was nothing new, but the flip was. 00:54:44.01\00:54:47.12 On a completely level road with Cooper safely buckled in, J.J. 00:54:47.12\00:54:52.69 made a circle, and the buggy rolled over. 00:54:52.69\00:54:56.96 Cooper was unresponsive. J.J. called 911, then Melanie. 00:54:56.96\00:55:00.23 "There's been an accident," he told her. 00:55:00.23\00:55:01.76 I don't think Cooper's gonna make it." 00:55:01.76\00:55:03.26 The next hours were every parent's worst nightmare -- 00:55:03.26\00:55:05.57 ambulance, E.R., sobs, and shock, and finally the news -- 00:55:05.57\00:55:09.27 Cooper had died. J.J. and Melanie found 00:55:09.27\00:55:16.38 themselves doing the unthinkable -- selecting a 00:55:16.38\00:55:19.01 casket, planning a funeral, and envisioning life without their 00:55:19.01\00:55:22.35 only son. In the coming days, they fell 00:55:22.35\00:55:24.49 into a mind-numbing rhythm. Every morning upon awakening, 00:55:24.49\00:55:27.32 they held each other and sobbed uncontrollably and, gathering 00:55:27.32\00:55:30.16 enough courage to climb out of bed, they would go downstairs to 00:55:30.16\00:55:32.86 the family and friends who awaited them. 00:55:32.86\00:55:34.73 They would soldier through the day until bedtime. 00:55:34.73\00:55:36.90 Then they would go to bed, hold each other, and cry themselves 00:55:36.90\00:55:39.60 to sleep." Some of you have been there. 00:55:39.60\00:55:44.97 J.J. told me, "There is no class or book on this planet that can 00:55:44.97\00:55:49.51 prepare you to have your 5-year-old son die in your 00:55:49.51\00:55:53.25 arms. We know what the bottom looks 00:55:53.25\00:55:55.38 like." The bottom. 00:55:55.38\00:55:58.12 We pass much of life, if not most of life, at mid-altitude. 00:55:58.12\00:56:02.86 Occasionally, we summit a peak -- our graduation, our 00:56:02.86\00:56:05.56 wedding, a promotion, the birth of a child -- but most of life 00:56:05.56\00:56:08.63 is lived at mid-level, Mondayish obligations of term papers and 00:56:08.63\00:56:13.30 carpools and expense reports and recipes. 00:56:13.30\00:56:16.54 But, on occasion, the world bottoms out. 00:56:16.54\00:56:21.11 The dune buggy flips, the housing market crashes, the test 00:56:21.11\00:56:25.55 results come back positive, and before we know it, we discover 00:56:25.55\00:56:30.15 what the bottom looks like. Today, J.J.'s hurts are still 00:56:30.15\00:56:34.96 deep, but his faith is deeper still." 00:56:34.96\00:56:37.93 Attitude. Attitude. "Whenever he tells the story of 00:56:37.93\00:56:43.67 losing Cooper, he says this -- 'We know what the bottom looks 00:56:43.67\00:56:48.10 like and we know who is waiting there -- it's Jesus Christ.'" 00:56:48.10\00:56:53.61 "Yes, can do." Amen. 00:56:53.61\00:57:00.92 >> Before you go, let me take an extra moment to share with you 00:57:03.02\00:57:05.25 an opportunity to get into the Bible in a fresh new way. 00:57:05.25\00:57:08.46 All across the world, more and more people are hearing the call 00:57:08.46\00:57:11.19 to examine Scriptures for themselves. 00:57:11.19\00:57:12.96 If you felt drawn to learn more about God's word but you don't 00:57:12.96\00:57:16.20 know where to start or you're just looking for a more in-depth 00:57:16.20\00:57:19.47 examination of bible truths, then I have something right here 00:57:19.47\00:57:22.40 that I believe you're gonna enjoy. 00:57:22.40\00:57:24.07 I want to send a series of guides to get you started. 00:57:24.07\00:57:26.84 This one's entitled "Why Does God Allow Suffering?" 00:57:26.84\00:57:29.74 Each guide begins with a story and an introduction of the 00:57:29.74\00:57:32.21 subject.
