¤¤ 00:00:01.20\00:00:03.70 >> Amen. >> Amen. You know, I often wonder, what 00:02:17.27\00:02:20.47 does it mean, that power in the blood? 00:02:20.47\00:02:23.41 Things don't always go the way we want them to go in our lives, 00:02:23.81\00:02:26.78 and sometimes I feel like God's not with me or that I'm failing 00:02:26.78\00:02:31.21 God. 00:02:31.21\00:02:32.28 But the problem is never God. God is always here with me, 00:02:32.45\00:02:38.79 always here. His strength, His power, is constant. And so if 00:02:38.79\00:02:45.49 there's a problem, it's me not reaching on to and claiming that power in the blood of Jesus. 00:02:45.49\00:02:52.00 And as we sing these songs, as we sing about the power of the blood of Jesus, the sacrifice, 00:02:52.00\00:02:58.01 He already paid the price. He's done the work. We just have to 00:02:58.01\00:03:02.98 reach out and hold on to that power. So let's make that power real in our lives by just 00:03:02.98\00:03:07.88 saying, "Jesus, here I am. Cover me with Your blood." [ "The 00:03:07.88\00:03:15.86 Blood" playing ] >> Amen! >> Amen! 00:06:22.78\00:06:23.95 >> It is so comforting to know that His blood never, never 00:06:23.95\00:06:29.15 loses its power. I am thankful for that, and... 00:06:29.15\00:06:34.82 the knowledge that that sacrifice that He did on Calvary just for you and for me 00:06:34.99\00:06:43.63 so that we could have a chance to be with Him forever -- that's awesome, and I can't 00:06:43.63\00:06:49.94 possibly wrap my mind around that. "Thank You" is not even 00:06:49.94\00:06:57.98 enough. This morning as we sing the next song, I'd like us to really meditate on the words. 00:06:57.98\00:07:03.65 And I know that "Thank You" is not enough, but fortunately, we serve a God that knows our 00:07:03.65\00:07:10.29 heart, and it goes beyond thankfulness. And as we sing 00:07:10.29\00:07:16.50 this, we just want Him to know... "Thank You. Thank You, Jesus, for doing that 00:07:16.50\00:07:22.20 for me." [ "Worthy Is the Lamb" plays ] 00:07:22.20\00:07:29.88 >> Maybe you had a tough week today -- this week. Maybe your 00:09:36.91\00:09:44.38 week was very frustrating. You know what? Jesus wants to hear 00:09:44.38\00:09:50.15 about that. But maybe your week was amazing, and you had so many blessings that you could 00:09:50.15\00:09:57.63 actually touch and see, and you're anxious to share that with Jesus as well. Whatever 00:09:57.63\00:10:04.73 your week was, I'd like to invite you to come forward and share that with Him, Who wants 00:10:04.73\00:10:12.01 to know every detail about us. He wants to know that we are 00:10:12.01\00:10:16.18 connected. So, as we sing this song one more time, I'd like to invite you to come front and 00:10:16.18\00:10:22.72 talk to Him. 00:10:22.72\00:10:24.42 >> Good morning. Boys and girls, all right, let's be quiet so we 00:12:48.70\00:12:53.10 hear the story. How are you all doing this morning? >> Good. 00:12:53.10\00:12:55.47 >> My name is Daniel, and I'm a field biologist, 00:12:55.64\00:12:59.14 which is just a fancy way of saying that I get to be outside 00:12:59.14\00:13:02.18 a lot, and I get to spend time with wild animals, 00:13:02.18\00:13:04.95 and I get paid for it, which is wonderful. 00:13:04.95\00:13:08.12 Now, I've been blessed with many adventures throughout my years as a biologist, and I want to 00:13:08.28\00:13:13.72 share a special story with you guys, but before I get to that, I want to see if you guys 00:13:13.72\00:13:19.56 can guess what my favorite study animal is from looking at a skull that I brought. 00:13:19.56\00:13:29.57 >> Oh! [ Indistinct conversations ] >> All right. 00:13:29.57\00:13:34.68 Who can guess what this is? It's a mammal. It eats only plants. 00:13:34.68\00:13:41.35 It has one type of tooth -- just molars -- and it lives its whole 00:13:41.35\00:13:47.49 life in the water. Any guesses? >> A beaver! >> A beaver? Good 00:13:47.49\00:13:52.06 guess. Not quite. A little bigger. Look at the skull. 00:13:52.06\00:13:55.83 >> Alligator. >> Alligator? All right. Do you want to guess? 00:13:55.83\00:14:01.44 No? Crocodile? Whale? No, it's a manatee. 00:14:01.44\00:14:09.31 >> What? 00:14:09.31\00:14:10.85 >> You wouldn't have guessed. I would have been very 00:14:11.01\00:14:12.81 impressed. So, I study manatees, and I've 00:14:12.81\00:14:17.45 had the unbelievable blessing of working with manatees in many 00:14:17.45\00:14:21.02 countries -- Cuba, Panama, Mexico. 00:14:21.02\00:14:23.73 But the story... actually, even most recently, this last month, 00:14:23.73\00:14:27.20 I was down in the Amazon River in Brazil. 00:14:27.20\00:14:29.20 I got to work with Amazonian manatees. 00:14:29.20\00:14:31.30 There's a picture there that you guys can see. 00:14:31.30\00:14:33.77 But the story I want to share with you guys this morning 00:14:33.77\00:14:37.04 goes back a little further to when I was just a student 00:14:37.04\00:14:40.41 still just starting with manatees, and it takes place 00:14:40.41\00:14:43.35 in Honduras. 00:14:43.35\00:14:44.61 Now, I had organized a series of flights. We use a small plane to 00:14:44.78\00:14:49.82 fly over a large area to see where these animals are. And I had organized six flights 00:14:49.82\00:14:55.92 that I needed to do, and I scheduled 10 days -- 10 days for 00:14:55.92\00:15:01.13 six flights. How many extra days did I have? Four extra days. I thought that should be plenty 00:15:01.13\00:15:07.77 of time for all the things that can happen, just in case. Right? 00:15:07.77\00:15:12.24 So, I invited two other scientists, and I invited a 00:15:12.24\00:15:16.41 pilot. His name was Chuck. And I got all the paperwork done. 00:15:16.41\00:15:19.81 And we arrived in Honduras, and I had everything ready, and we 00:15:19.81\00:15:25.09 were set to go. We were going to start on a Sunday, and we were going to finish the last day 00:15:25.09\00:15:29.86 whenever we got to those six surveys. The time I had scheduled for those 10 days -- 00:15:29.86\00:15:35.03 listen up, guys -- was from Sunday to the Tuesday of the following week. Now, Sunday 00:15:35.03\00:15:42.37 came, and I got over to the airport, and you won't guess what I saw. >> What? 00:15:42.37\00:15:47.41 >> There was a big, white jet, a $20 million jet, and it was in the middle of the airport 00:15:47.41\00:15:54.08 landing strip, and they told us, "Nobody is flying in, and nobody 00:15:54.08\00:15:58.99 can fly out." Because this plane came in the night with no lights, and it was abandoned 00:15:58.99\00:16:03.49 there, and if you don't believe me, you can Google it later. And it was just abandoned there. 00:16:03.49\00:16:08.10 And for three days, they did an investigation. They didn't find 00:16:08.10\00:16:12.57 out until many, many years later who the jet belonged to. But the long... the short of it 00:16:12.57\00:16:16.71 is that we couldn't fly out for three days, so I lost three days 00:16:16.71\00:16:21.58 immediately. So now I was just down to seven days. And I needed 00:16:21.58\00:16:26.08 six flights. And one of those days was the Sabbath. So, we waited three days, and 00:16:26.08\00:16:31.12 Wednesday came. We got there early. We got into the plane. 00:16:31.12\00:16:35.56 And then they told us, "There's a fuel shortage. We can't give 00:16:35.56\00:16:39.26 you fuel until everybody else gets fuel because you're a private plane." Boy, I was 00:16:39.26\00:16:43.40 feeling really worried at this point 'cause I was group leader, and even though I was half the 00:16:43.40\00:16:47.67 age of the other biologists, I had all the responsibility. Well, everybody got their fuel, 00:16:47.67\00:16:52.01 and would you believe there was just enough fuel for us to be able to do what we needed to do? 00:16:52.01\00:16:58.01 So, I was praising God for that. The next day came. It was a 00:16:58.01\00:17:03.95 Thursday. We got there early. There was enough fuel. We took 00:17:03.95\00:17:07.66 off. We did our flight. Everything was great, and then as we were returning, the pilot 00:17:07.66\00:17:12.66 comes on. Now, he has a way to talk just to me through the 00:17:12.66\00:17:16.13 channel. And he talks just to me, and he said, "Hey, Daniel, there's a slight problem." 00:17:16.13\00:17:20.27 I said, "Uh, what's the problem?" He said, "The flaps 00:17:20.27\00:17:23.41 aren't working." Now, we're about to land. And I'm not a 00:17:23.41\00:17:28.18 pilot. I'm not an expert in planes. But I knew that that 00:17:28.18\00:17:31.61 wasn't great. The flaps are sort of the brakes for the plane to slow down. And so I said, "Is 00:17:31.61\00:17:36.02 there a problem?" And he said, "Well, not necessarily. 00:17:36.02\00:17:38.55 It just means we're going to have a hot landing," which essentially means in 00:17:38.55\00:17:42.22 pilot-speak that we're going to land fast, faster than you're 00:17:42.22\00:17:46.70 supposed to land. Well, I didn't tell the other crew members. I 00:17:46.70\00:17:48.80 didn't want to stress them out. And we landed, and thankfully it 00:17:48.80\00:17:53.30 was safely. Then I was worried -- are we going to waste a lot of time, days, possibly, in 00:17:53.30\00:17:58.74 fixing these flaps? But thankfully, it was a simple fix. 00:17:58.74\00:18:01.88 Friday came. We came back. We did our flight. 00:18:01.88\00:18:06.85 Everything was fine. About midway through, Chuck comes on 00:18:06.85\00:18:11.22 the radio again and says, "Daniel, slight problem." At this point, I'm starting to 00:18:11.22\00:18:15.29 really get worried. He said, "The battery is dead. The alternator's not working." 00:18:15.29\00:18:20.76 Now I'm thinking, "All right. Is that a problem?" And he said, 00:18:20.76\00:18:26.47 "Well, not really, as long as we don't stall. As long as the engine doesn't stop, 'cause we 00:18:26.47\00:18:31.17 only have one engine, then we're fine." Because otherwise, the only way to start it again is to 00:18:31.17\00:18:35.71 manually turn the propeller. Now, we're 500 feet up in the 00:18:35.71\00:18:38.88 air. No one wants to get out of the plane and turn that propeller. So, thankfully, once 00:18:38.88\00:18:43.85 again, we landed safely. The plane did not stall. I didn't tell the other crew 00:18:43.85\00:18:48.92 members about that one, either. Now, we landed. And I had to 00:18:48.92\00:18:53.83 find that old mechanic again. I think I have a picture of him so 00:18:53.83\00:18:56.83 you can see. And it was a quick fix again. It was a very simple fix, so we were very grateful. 00:18:56.83\00:19:01.30 It was like a 50-cent fix. But I paid him a nice $20 tip. All 00:19:01.30\00:19:05.54 right. Now, the next day was Sabbath. I had done three flights. God had been good to us 00:19:05.54\00:19:10.15 multiple times on all three of those flights. I had a big 00:19:10.15\00:19:13.72 decision to make. I only had four more days available, and I needed three flights. 00:19:13.72\00:19:16.85 The weather was going to be good for Sabbath, Sunday, and Monday, but Tuesday, the last day 00:19:16.85\00:19:21.66 available, it was scheduled to rain. Now, I thought long and 00:19:21.66\00:19:26.09 hard, and I prayed, and I said, "God, I want to be faithful to You." But I was so worried about 00:19:26.09\00:19:30.90 what the other scientists would say if we took a day off that was perfectly fine to fly. 00:19:30.90\00:19:35.64 How would they understand taking off the Sabbath? What do you 00:19:35.64\00:19:39.97 think I did, boys and girls? Should I take the Sabbath off? 00:19:39.97\00:19:45.95 >> Yes. >> You bet. I said, "You know what? Come what may, I'm 00:19:45.95\00:19:50.12 going to honor God. He has been faithful to me. So I'm going to 00:19:50.12\00:19:54.26 trust in God." And I remembered what I was taught in elementary school at Ruth Murdoch. 00:19:54.26\00:19:58.49 I remembered what I was taught in high school and at Andrews 00:19:58.49\00:20:01.90 University when I attended here, and I remembered what I was taught at Loma Linda while was 00:20:01.90\00:20:05.73 attending there. And so I decided to take the day off, and 00:20:05.73\00:20:10.27 to my surprise, none of the other scientists said anything. They thought it was a good idea. 00:20:10.27\00:20:14.18 And we had a great time at the natural preserve that we went to just enjoy nature during 00:20:14.18\00:20:19.58 Sabbath. We returned on Sunday to flights and Monday, and both 00:20:19.58\00:20:26.49 those days went without a hitch -- no problem, everything great. The weather -- perfect. 00:20:26.49\00:20:30.46 Then came Tuesday, our last day, for our sixth survey. 00:20:30.46\00:20:35.26 We needed that survey to occur. We knew the rain was coming. We took off early in the 00:20:35.26\00:20:39.33 morning, and we headed east. We got to our location, where we started our four-hour survey. 00:20:39.33\00:20:43.47 And we could see the rain about a mile away as it was coming 00:20:43.47\00:20:48.24 towards us. It always comes from east to west in that region of 00:20:48.24\00:20:52.25 the world. And as we're doing the survey, we could see the rain getting closer and closer. 00:20:52.25\00:20:56.05 We could start smelling the rain. In fact, we started 00:20:56.05\00:20:59.02 feeling raindrops hitting the plane, and of course, in such a small plane, flying so low, it's 00:20:59.02\00:21:03.39 very dangerous when the rain hits. You don't want to be conducting those kinds of 00:21:03.39\00:21:08.50 surveys. And so I was praying inside while I was doing this survey, and I just remember that 00:21:08.50\00:21:13.87 right as we were descending to land, finishing up the survey, the rain overtook us like a 00:21:13.87\00:21:19.07 wave, and it was like a powerful thunderstorm as we were landing. And when we got down to the 00:21:19.07\00:21:25.65 runway and we touched down, I just remember the sound of the rain and all of us looking 00:21:25.65\00:21:31.32 wide-eyed at each other in amazement. Nobody said a word. 00:21:31.32\00:21:36.16 But we were all thinking the same thing -- "How in the world did we just pull this off?" 00:21:36.16\00:21:42.26 Six surveys, six days that we did them. We honored the 00:21:42.26\00:21:47.57 Sabbath. Boys and girls, when I come up with a difficult situation in my life, I think 00:21:47.57\00:21:53.07 back on that story, and I'm encouraged by it, and I want to encourage you guys. 00:21:53.07\00:21:57.88 Trust in God because He is faithful. Who would like to 00:21:57.88\00:22:02.55 pray? >> Me. >> Nice and loud. >> Dear Jesus, 00:22:02.55\00:22:09.76 please help that plane to stay... other planes to stay up. And please help them to fly 00:22:09.76\00:22:18.93 well and nothing to go wrong with them. In Jesus' name we 00:22:18.93\00:22:24.67 pray. Amen. >> Amen. >> I want to do it! 00:22:24.67\00:22:28.34 >> All right, if you quietly return to your seats... Thank 00:22:28.34\00:22:34.05 you very much. [ Indistinct conversations ] 00:22:34.05\00:22:36.42 [ Organ playing ] 00:22:38.39\00:22:42.32 >> Amen! 00:25:52.95\00:25:55.08 >> Let's talk to Him. O God, we do have that hope. We have a world to reach in this 00:25:57.05\00:26:02.66 generation. These last few moments, we give them to You. 00:26:02.66\00:26:08.13 In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. 00:26:08.13\00:26:12.73 George Knight -- you've probably heard of him -- wrote a piece 00:26:12.90\00:26:20.08 in a journal this summer. I read it. 00:26:20.08\00:26:23.61 The title of this piece, by the way, begins with these two 00:26:23.61\00:26:26.61 words -- "Ground zero." And his opening word, with an 00:26:26.61\00:26:30.49 exclamation after it, is "Hiroshima!" 00:26:30.49\00:26:35.49 Soon as I saw that word, I said, "Man, that's from the land of my 00:26:35.66\00:26:39.49 birth. Hiroshima. We Americans say "Hiro-SHE-ma." I said, "Wait 00:26:39.49\00:26:44.00 a minute. Ground Zero. My mom gave me a black-and-white album that Dad put together." 00:26:44.00\00:26:49.24 I pulled it out. Sure enough, two black-and-white photos... 00:26:49.24\00:26:54.01 ground zero. And by the way, what was the date on that? 00:26:54.01\00:26:58.58 August 6, 1945. So we're talking about 72 years ago this month. 00:26:58.58\00:27:02.48 Okay, so let's see the picture, picture number one. Let's go. 00:27:02.48\00:27:05.69 That -- my dad did not take that one, by the way. But that's the 00:27:05.69\00:27:10.43 picture the world saw just hours after this nuclear explosion obliterated an entire city in my 00:27:10.43\00:27:17.10 homeland. Here are my dad's pictures. Here we go. Number 00:27:17.10\00:27:20.34 one. Number one -- it's my dad's handwriting there -- was to say 00:27:20.34\00:27:23.24 "Hiroshima. A-bomb Center." They called it the A-bomb back then. 00:27:23.24\00:27:26.57 That means about 1/2 mile above that dome is where the nuclear device detonated and just... 00:27:26.57\00:27:32.81 [ Imitates explosion ] Picture number two. 00:27:32.81\00:27:35.62 Look at that, and can you read my dad's handwriting underneath 00:27:35.78\00:27:38.09 it? It's pretty small there. 00:27:38.09\00:27:39.79 It says, "Most operated on living survivor." 00:27:39.79\00:27:42.56 That's seven years after. This is 1952. 00:27:42.56\00:27:45.83 I don't know how my dad found out about it. 00:27:45.83\00:27:47.73 He obviously spoke to this guy, this gentleman, in Japanese. 00:27:47.73\00:27:50.23 He'd been through multiple surgeries. 00:27:50.23\00:27:52.23 Obviously not at ground zero. Somewhere in the periphery. 00:27:52.23\00:27:55.07 Still surviving seven years later. 00:27:55.07\00:27:57.14 Ground zero. 00:27:57.14\00:27:58.57 George says, "Okay, what's ground zero?" So he throws by 00:27:58.74\00:28:01.58 four definitions, and it's the fourth one that I hope will catch your mind and heart. 00:28:01.58\00:28:07.05 "Ground zero," he says, "is where the action takes place. Ground zero is where change 00:28:07.05\00:28:10.29 happens. Ground zero is where the course of world history is 00:28:10.29\00:28:13.22 shifted in new directions." Here it comes now, number four. Put it on the screen, please. 00:28:13.22\00:28:16.36 Just leave that up there. Let it hang there for a moment. 00:28:25.83\00:28:27.90 Take a look at that. Ground zero, in this 00:28:27.90\00:28:31.11 intergalactic, cosmic battle between light and darkness... 00:28:31.11\00:28:35.28 "Ground zero in the great controversy between Christ," 00:28:35.28\00:28:38.15 the protagonist, "and Satan," the antagonist, 00:28:38.15\00:28:41.28 "is the struggle..." Hey, wait a minute, guys. 00:28:41.28\00:28:43.52 This is why we exist. "...is the struggle for the 00:28:43.52\00:28:46.59 hearts and minds of" what? "The next generation." 00:28:46.59\00:28:50.89 God raised this little campus up, what was it, 1901, 1902? I 00:28:51.06\00:28:57.43 forget. Emmanuel Missionary College. Raised it up why? Because of the ground-zero 00:28:57.43\00:29:03.74 mission we have. What's our theme for this weekend? 00:29:03.74\00:29:07.88 Total Engagement: Building the Kingdom. And, oh, by the way, 00:29:07.88\00:29:11.55 when you factor in -- talking about this next generation that's already here -- when you 00:29:11.55\00:29:16.32 factor in the chaos and craziness that over the summer has gripped our nation... 00:29:16.32\00:29:20.99 Let's not talk about Barcelona and the world. Let's just talk 00:29:20.99\00:29:23.63 about America right here. Last week in Charlottesville... What's going on with this 00:29:23.63\00:29:27.50 country? Any notion of racial reconciliation, movement, has 00:29:27.50\00:29:34.47 suddenly dissipated in this battle of press releases and 00:29:34.47\00:29:39.07 press conferences. And where are we? What's happening? George Knight is absolutely 00:29:39.07\00:29:44.15 right. 00:29:44.15\00:29:45.68 And by the way, this struggle has been going on for the entire history of the human race. 00:29:53.76\00:29:59.29 In fact, George quotes another George, and those of you who are in education -- there are a 00:29:59.29\00:30:02.73 whole bunch of you that are -- the American educator and influential educational 00:30:02.73\00:30:07.00 theorist -- I'm talking about George S. Counts, last century. 00:30:07.00\00:30:12.34 Wrote nine books. George quotes from one of those books with this prescient, in my humble 00:30:12.34\00:30:17.18 opinion, prescient observation. Put the words on the screen for 00:30:17.18\00:30:19.31 you. Hmm! 00:30:28.02\00:30:28.99 And I'm thinking great controversy... 00:30:44.81\00:30:46.98 Now, here comes the line. 00:30:50.31\00:30:51.61 Sound familiar? Last half of the sentence -- 00:31:03.89\00:31:07.10 Wow! Martin Luther, whose 500th anniversary you're going to hear 00:31:15.94\00:31:19.84 a whole lot more about as we move towards October, Martin Luther -- that was his 00:31:19.84\00:31:24.55 passion. That's why he was so big on teaching -- to shape the 00:31:24.55\00:31:28.75 next generation is to shape the future. Everybody knows it. 00:31:28.75\00:31:32.62 Adolf Hitler knew it. Joseph Stalin knew it. Kim Jong-un 00:31:32.62\00:31:36.96 knows it from North Korea. Ellen White, American reformer and spiritual leader -- she knew 00:31:36.96\00:31:42.63 it. Go for the young. We exist because of that vision. 00:31:42.63\00:31:47.80 So, ground zero, George Knight, you're right. 00:31:47.80\00:31:52.37 What are we going to do then? On the cusp of a new year, how then 00:31:58.21\00:32:03.75 shall we live? Consider for a moment something Jesus said just literally a few paces away from 00:32:03.75\00:32:09.76 ground zero, Calvary. On the very morning, by the way, the very morning of his 00:32:09.76\00:32:16.70 execution. I want you to picture Jesus' face. 00:32:16.70\00:32:18.97 Please. He stands there bound and gagged almost. 00:32:18.97\00:32:24.94 Look at His face... bruised and bloodied from being jumped from behind and beaten by 00:32:24.94\00:32:30.35 that godless Charlottesville-esque rabble in Caiaphas' judgment hall. 00:32:30.35\00:32:35.12 Look at him, one eye black and blue and swollen nearly shut like a whupped prizefighter, the 00:32:35.12\00:32:40.76 other eye still open and dark and clear but tired. 00:32:40.76\00:32:44.09 Splattered blood coagulated on His cheeks and drying into His 00:32:44.26\00:32:48.90 beard, His lips still swelling further from the pummeling by 00:32:48.90\00:32:53.67 human fists. He stands bound in front of the 00:32:53.67\00:32:56.84 governor, and the governor, 00:32:56.84\00:32:58.11 ticked to high heavens for being awakened in this ungodly hour that is becoming more ungodly by 00:32:58.27\00:33:05.71 the second... Pilate speaks. We pick the story up in the 00:33:05.71\00:33:10.52 Gospel of John, chapter 18. Take a look at it. John 18. 00:33:10.52\00:33:17.56 Drop down to verse 33. "Pilate then went back inside 00:33:17.56\00:33:20.96 the palace, summoned"... "Yo, prisoner, come here!" 00:33:20.96\00:33:25.30 ..."summoned Jesus and asked Him, 'Are you the king of the 00:33:25.30\00:33:33.94 Jews?'" 00:33:33.94\00:33:36.51 Pilate's stunned by the obvious nobility of whoever this is. 00:33:42.85\00:33:47.42 [ Scoffs ] 00:33:47.42\00:33:48.32 "Jesus said, 'My kingdom'"... building the kingdom -- 00:33:55.83\00:34:01.10 here's the original kingdom builder -- 00:34:01.10\00:34:04.67 "'My kingdom is not of this world. 00:34:04.67\00:34:07.01 If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by 00:34:07.01\00:34:09.48 the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom 00:34:09.48\00:34:11.11 is from another place.'" Aha! 00:34:11.11\00:34:12.88 And there it is. Just a few steps away from ground zero, 00:34:34.50\00:34:39.47 Calvary, the driving, compelling heart of Adventist education reduced to a single sentence -- 00:34:39.47\00:34:44.71 "What is truth?" This last spring, the chaplains and the pastors convened a group 00:34:44.71\00:34:53.79 of Andrews studentsnot -- key word --notmembers of our faith 00:34:53.79\00:34:59.69 community. So, over pizza downstairs here in the commons, Chaplain June led an informal 00:34:59.69\00:35:05.83 conversation. A young Baptist coed is in that circle eating pizza. "So, what do you think 00:35:05.83\00:35:12.41 about Andrews University?" She said, "I like it here." A little bit later, "What do you 00:35:12.41\00:35:20.58 think about the Seventh-Day Adventist Church?" She looked 00:35:20.58\00:35:27.62 up. "You know, it's strange," she said. "I ask my Seventh-Day 00:35:27.62\00:35:33.13 Adventist friends" -- fellow students here at the university -- "I ask my Seventh-Day 00:35:33.13\00:35:37.60 Adventist friends what it is they believe, and they reply, 'How should I know? 00:35:37.60\00:35:44.77 I just grew up in the church.'" [ Exhales ] When I heard that, 00:35:44.77\00:35:51.51 I'm telling you the gospel truth -- I not only blushed, but my stomach just shriveled into a 00:35:51.51\00:35:56.75 tiny little fist... because I like to think that some of the 00:35:56.75\00:36:03.16 brightest kids in our faith community are students in this university. It can't be those 00:36:03.16\00:36:07.30 students she's talking about, can it? I mean, come on. They grew up in Adventist homes. 00:36:07.30\00:36:11.03 They went to Adventist schools all their lives. I've been 00:36:11.03\00:36:16.00 brooding over her words all summer. "What do you believe?" "[Scoffs] How should I know? 00:36:16.00\00:36:20.64 I just grew up in the church." [ Inhales sharply ] But you know 00:36:20.64\00:36:26.38 what? I thank God for that little Baptist coed. Number one, 00:36:26.38\00:36:31.05 she likes being here. Number two, she has Adventist friends. 00:36:31.05\00:36:34.32 Number three, she came to share some pizza with us. And number four, maybe she was 00:36:34.32\00:36:38.76 telling us something we needed to hear. What Jesus just said to 00:36:38.76\00:36:44.80 Pilate as we stood there listening. Repeat the words 00:36:44.80\00:36:49.64 again -- verse 37. "You're a king, then," Pilate shoots back. 00:36:49.64\00:36:51.77 "I have one mission, for which I was born. I have one reason 00:37:06.62\00:37:12.36 for my life." I have one reason why I teach in this university. 00:37:12.36\00:37:18.83 I have one reason why I serve in this university. I have one reason why I lead in 00:37:18.83\00:37:23.97 this university. I have one reason why I preach in this 00:37:23.97\00:37:28.01 university. I came into the world to testify to truth. What 00:37:28.01\00:37:33.88 truth? "The truth I was talking about last night alone with my 11 when I said to them, 'I am 00:37:33.88\00:37:44.06 the way and the truth and the life.'" That truth. The truth as 00:37:44.06\00:37:53.87 it is in Jesus. That's the fire in the belly of the Seventh-Day Adventist university -- the 00:37:53.87\00:38:01.34 truth as it is in Jesus. George Knight -- ground zero. 00:38:01.34\00:38:05.78 How'd he put it? 00:38:05.78\00:38:07.18 "Ground zero in the great controversy between Christ and 00:38:07.35\00:38:10.05 Satan is the struggle for the hearts and minds 00:38:10.05\00:38:12.82 of the next generation." 00:38:12.82\00:38:14.76 That's our mission. That's what we're all about. Led to this 00:38:14.92\00:38:18.79 university so that we might engage with Christ in this struggle, His struggle, His 00:38:18.79\00:38:25.33 struggle, for the hearts and minds of the next generation. 00:38:25.33\00:38:28.74 You say, "Ha! Nice try, Dwight. That'syourmission, not my 00:38:28.74\00:38:34.58 mission." And you know what? You're absolutely right. It is 00:38:34.58\00:38:38.58 my mission. But it is not my mission alone. Because I'm going to tell you something that you 00:38:38.58\00:38:42.35 already have sensed, and you've known this a long time, anyway, I know. You know as well as I do 00:38:42.35\00:38:47.06 that they'll listen more closely to you than they ever will to 00:38:47.06\00:38:52.99 me. I'm talking about those moments in the class. They're there -- for some reason 00:38:52.99\00:38:59.10 today, the passion of your life is being poured out in your lecture about this discipline 00:38:59.10\00:39:05.07 that you love. It's just pouring into the space of that room. 00:39:05.07\00:39:10.31 Something happens. You know, I teach graduate students over 00:39:10.31\00:39:17.35 here at the theological seminary. That something is not every day. I understand that. 00:39:17.35\00:39:21.82 But there are days, and you know it, mind and heart connected with the young seated in those, 00:39:21.82\00:39:31.20 at those desks in front of you, and it's at that moment -- 00:39:31.20\00:39:36.10 they're wide-eyed. You know why? Because they're wannabes. They want to be what you are. 00:39:36.10\00:39:42.38 That your grasp, your lucid grasp of the discipline you champion -- they want to be 00:39:42.38\00:39:47.58 just like you. And when this comes out of you, and by the 00:39:47.58\00:39:51.22 way, you could be the most bashful professor on this campus or you could be the most 00:39:51.22\00:39:55.66 exuberant one around. It doesn't matter, your personality type at all. You are just so caught up. 00:39:55.66\00:39:59.29 There is just like fire inside of you. I want to suggest to you 00:39:59.29\00:40:03.13 that that fire moment -- and we all know those moments when we teach -- that fire moment 00:40:03.13\00:40:08.17 is the moment of Christ Jesus where He steps into that space. He doesn't care what your 00:40:08.17\00:40:14.08 discipline is. He led you into the discipline you have chosen. 00:40:14.08\00:40:16.71 But that's His perfect entree out of that moment of hot passion for learning 00:40:16.71\00:40:22.62 and growing. That's His moment, and He steps into the air. 00:40:22.62\00:40:27.52 You're not talking theology. You don't work for the religion 00:40:27.52\00:40:33.66 department. You have your own calling, but in the exercise of that calling, in the moment when 00:40:33.66\00:40:39.53 mind to mind, and don't ask me why, but it's almost like they're breathless. They're just 00:40:39.53\00:40:45.57 sitting there in the palm of your hand, which is a nail-scarred hand that says, "I 00:40:45.57\00:40:53.55 made you for this. I made you for this." And you know it's true because sometimes it 00:40:53.55\00:41:01.72 surprises even you. When the class empties and everybody's gone and you're all 00:41:01.72\00:41:06.29 alone, and you're flipping your computer shut, you sense He was 00:41:06.29\00:41:14.70 here. "He walked into my room today. And I wasn't even talking 00:41:14.70\00:41:24.38 about Him." Wow. So, I tell you what, my friend. Nice try. 00:41:28.35\00:41:33.42 You can't pin that mission on me. It's ours. 00:41:33.42\00:41:38.79 You're making a sale. Financial investor that you are, you're 00:41:38.79\00:41:43.63 making a sale. You're down. You're crunching the numbers. You are waxing eloquent about 00:41:43.63\00:41:46.63 the state of the market today, and these clients are just... 00:41:46.63\00:41:51.47 they're justthere. That moment when your palm is the palm of Christ... is the Christ moment 00:41:51.47\00:41:57.48 for your kind of work. Huge respect for you in that split 00:41:57.48\00:42:06.12 second. It happens here through you, through us. So, here's the 00:42:06.12\00:42:11.73 question -- how can I be comfortable testifying to the truth as it is in Jesus day in 00:42:11.73\00:42:16.60 and day out? Let me end with this. In anticipation of the upcoming 500th anniversary of 00:42:16.60\00:42:22.67 the Wittenberg door and Luther and the Reformation, I read three biographies of Luther this 00:42:22.67\00:42:27.41 summer and scanned two others. In the biography by the English historian Derek Wilson -- title 00:42:27.41\00:42:33.75 of his biography, "Luther: Out of the Storm." This is 00:42:33.75\00:42:38.15 fascinating. In describing the deep angst, this grinding sense of being utterly lost -- it was 00:42:38.15\00:42:47.73 so bad for Luther, he coined a German word for it,anfechtungen. He was in the grip of 00:42:47.73\00:42:53.74 anfechtungen. Wilson makes the point that it was those moments 00:42:53.74\00:43:04.15 that something happens. Put his...just one line. Put it on the screen for you. 00:43:04.15\00:43:07.32 Derek Wilson. His -- Luther -- Luther's... 00:43:07.32\00:43:09.78 The Lord knows we all have those treadmills to have to grind through every single day. 00:43:18.76\00:43:23.63 As important as those treadmills are, what was happening to Luther is beyond the treadmill. 00:43:23.63\00:43:29.37 It's something he encounters all alone, sometimes for days and nights while he's going 00:43:29.37\00:43:36.61 around his work. He's just... justanfechtungen is deep within 00:43:36.61\00:43:41.12 his soul. He's struggling for God, struggling. The point is, 00:43:41.12\00:43:45.52 what's happening is, he's making it his own. It's becoming his. 00:43:45.52\00:43:51.19 It's not a theory. It's not a piece of knowledge. It's...Now it's just moving in. And Wilson 00:43:51.19\00:43:57.40 points out, it's how that angst that leads to the Bible, that leads to God, to Christ, to the 00:43:57.40\00:44:02.07 Calvary and the Reformation. One day, Luther was so troubled about God that his spiritual 00:44:02.07\00:44:07.88 mentor, Johann von Staupitz, who was vicar general of the Augustinian order that Luther 00:44:07.88\00:44:14.45 was part of as a monk and a priest, Staupitz is listening to 00:44:14.45\00:44:20.19 Luther. By the way, Staupitz and Luther loved each other all the way through until Staupitz died, 00:44:20.19\00:44:25.36 though they would have to part company theologically. Staupitz is listening to Luther. 00:44:25.36\00:44:31.57 He's distraught over God, and at one point, he interrupts -- 00:44:31.57\00:44:36.04 "Martin! God is not angry at you! But you are angry at Him. 00:44:36.20\00:44:41.31 Look at the Cross. Look at the Cross, 00:44:41.31\00:44:45.81 Martin." Jesus stands bound and almost 00:44:45.81\00:44:54.62 gagged before Pilate that Friday morning early. 00:44:54.62\00:44:58.16 He knows just a few steps away, ground zero, but He also knows that on Tuesday afternoon, His 00:44:58.33\00:45:07.44 last time in the sacred temple, with a crowd around Him, He announced to everyone who 00:45:07.44\00:45:13.68 would listen the words in John 12:32... 00:45:13.68\00:45:17.45 And then John boy scribbles in the next line, "He spoke of 00:45:22.25\00:45:26.96 His impending death" -- crucifixion -- 00:45:26.96\00:45:31.43 lifted up between heaven and earth, hoisted. Ground zero, the 00:45:31.43\00:45:37.50 Cross. That's the explosive drawing that pulls us into the vortex of the great controversy, 00:45:37.50\00:45:45.77 the struggle for the young minds and hearts of the next generation -- for which you 00:45:45.77\00:45:50.75 were born. You were born for this. Do you understand? 00:45:50.75\00:45:53.88 Everything you do has been born for this. So, what would happen 00:45:53.88\00:46:00.82 if you and I, every morning, had a quiet nook alone, and somehow 00:46:00.82\00:46:10.63 we tiptoe up to the Cross again? You get there however way you 00:46:10.63\00:46:15.37 wish to get there. You want to read the Gospels one at a time? I mean, the last chapters of 00:46:15.37\00:46:18.47 the Gospels one at a time? You want to read some book you love 00:46:18.47\00:46:22.74 about Calvary? "Desire of Ages"? It doesn't matter to me. 00:46:22.74\00:46:25.11 But what would happen if you and I, every morning, would kneel at 00:46:25.28\00:46:28.85 ground zero, the ground zero of the Cross, and we would look up 00:46:28.85\00:46:32.02 into that face? He's not hanging on the Cross 00:46:32.02\00:46:34.16 now. It's a beautiful face. 00:46:34.16\00:46:35.99 No coagulated blood, no crown of thorns. 00:46:35.99\00:46:38.79 But He's still the Savior of the world. What would happen if, 00:46:38.96\00:46:43.43 every day, we prayed the prayer of Fanny Crosby? Remember Fanny 00:46:43.43\00:46:48.84 Crosby? ¤ I am Thine, O Lord ¤ ¤ I have heard Thy voice ¤ ¤ And 00:46:48.84\00:46:55.74 it speaks Thy love to me ¤ ¤ And I long to rise in the arms of 00:46:55.74\00:47:02.48 faith ¤ ¤ And be closer drawn to Thee ¤ Sing it. ¤ Draw me 00:47:02.48\00:47:12.13 nearer, nearer, blessed Lord ¤ ¤ To the Cross where Thou hast 00:47:12.13\00:47:22.04 died ¤ ¤ Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord ¤ ¤ To Thy 00:47:22.04\00:47:35.45 precious bleeding side ¤ What would happen if every morning that were our prayer? 00:47:35.45\00:47:43.39 We just prayed it. We sang it even to Him. I don't know where 00:47:43.39\00:47:48.60 those kids that this little Baptist coed talked to are going 00:47:48.60\00:47:52.30 to be this year. It is very possible they will be in your classes. So, "Hey, how do I 00:47:52.30\00:48:00.58 know? I just grew up in the church." Let's reverse the testimony. Let's move from 00:48:00.58\00:48:07.12 growing up in the church to... growing up in Christ. 'Cause that kid, after that 00:48:07.12\00:48:15.72 red-hot moment when you've had the whole class, there's going to be a kid one day who waits 00:48:15.72\00:48:20.30 for everybody else to leave, and he's standing in front of you, and he says, "Listen, Prof. 00:48:20.30\00:48:25.90 I've been noticing something. Would you please tell me about 00:48:25.90\00:48:34.21 your faith?" And you'll open your mouth -- I promise you, you will open your mouth, and words 00:48:34.21\00:48:39.51 will come out of the mouth you did not expect because that's the ground-zero moment 00:48:39.51\00:48:44.72 that all heaven has called you for. Because of you at Andrews 00:48:44.72\00:48:52.19 University, that kid, that girl, knows Jesus. Amen. 00:48:52.19\00:49:00.87 And amen. Yeah, I know that's why you're here. 00:49:00.87\00:49:05.24 Me, too. Let's dedicate ourselves. Let's ask God to 00:49:05.24\00:49:10.28 dedicate us. This is a very special moment. Here's what we're going to do. Turn to page 00:49:10.28\00:49:14.58 12 of your bulletin and bring it with you, please. It's the litany of dedication for today. 00:49:14.58\00:49:21.42 I'm going to invite the president in a moment -- she's going to come up here, 00:49:21.42\00:49:23.79 Andrea Luxton, and she's going to lead us in this litany of 00:49:23.79\00:49:26.73 dedication. She's going to be joined on this side by Jeannie Leiterman, who's principal 00:49:26.73\00:49:31.93 of Andrews Academy. But here's the deal. If you are a member of 00:49:31.93\00:49:37.04 the Andrews University family -- staff, faculty, administration, whatever you do, in some little 00:49:37.04\00:49:42.41 nook and cranny around here, I want to invite you right now. Let's not wait for somebody 00:49:42.41\00:49:46.08 else. You just step forward, and they'll come follow on right 00:49:46.08\00:49:48.65 behind you. Would you mind just coming up here to the front? 00:49:48.65\00:49:51.09 We do this where we're just standing here under the ground-zero symbol of Calvary. 00:49:51.09\00:49:56.76 I want you to come forward as we surrender our lives and the year 00:49:56.76\00:50:02.13 to Him, Who is our Lord and Savior. You come on up. And I want to say to new student 00:50:02.13\00:50:06.40 parents who are here, parents who are here with new students, parents, when we get to the 00:50:06.40\00:50:12.31 portions marked "faculty and staff," would you read those portions with the faculty and 00:50:12.31\00:50:17.38 staff? They'll be all over this place. But you just lift your 00:50:17.38\00:50:21.28 voice up as well. And the rest of us will listen and join in 00:50:21.28\00:50:25.75 and be a part of that prayer of dedication. They're coming forward. While they're coming 00:50:25.75\00:50:29.59 forward, let's all stand together. So just please stand where you're seated right now. 00:50:29.59\00:50:33.83 Up in the balcony, those of you who are watching on live streaming right now, be a part 00:50:33.83\00:50:38.30 of this. Join us in this moment as we cross the edges into a 00:50:38.30\00:50:43.61 brand-new uncharted year. 00:50:43.61\00:50:46.04 >> This is a group of passionate and committed individuals 00:50:46.21\00:50:50.71 who are here because they believe in Seventh-Day Adventist 00:50:50.71\00:50:54.48 education and because they believe in young people and 00:50:54.48\00:50:57.65 making a difference in their future. 00:50:57.65\00:51:00.96 Let's read together. "Standing before God on the eve of this 00:51:01.12\00:51:09.86 new year, we affirm our mission as a Seventh-Day Adventist school of higher education, 00:51:09.86\00:51:13.80 expressed in our theme, "Total Engagement: Building the 00:51:13.80\00:51:20.08 Kingdom." >> We recognize God's call to both engage and enlist the minds and hearts of the next 00:51:20.08\00:51:27.35 generation. Keep a close watch on yourself and on your 00:51:27.35\00:51:32.99 teaching. Stay true to what is right, and God will save you and those who hear you. 00:51:32.99\00:51:39.03 >> Wasn't this a mission Christ Himself embraced? "For this reason I was born and 00:51:39.03\00:51:43.77 for this purpose. I have come into the world to bear witness 00:51:43.77\00:51:48.20 to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." >> Then day and night let us 00:51:48.20\00:51:54.74 listen to His voice, we who are called by the Spirit of Jesus to 00:51:54.74\00:52:00.12 testify to His truth and build His Kingdom. "I am the way, the truth, and the life." 00:52:00.12\00:52:07.26 By what we teach and how we teach, may the truth of Jesus be reflected through us to our 00:52:07.26\00:52:14.20 students. >> We accept His total-engagement command -- 00:52:14.20\00:52:19.57 "a new commandment I give you that you love one another. As I have loved you, so you must 00:52:19.57\00:52:26.91 love one another." >> But what about His total-engagement 00:52:26.91\00:52:33.05 admonition, "Keep a close watch on yourself and on your teaching"? >> We accept the Holy 00:52:33.05\00:52:39.39 Spirit's counsel and will seek to prepare and shape the next generation, that they too may 00:52:39.39\00:52:46.90 follow the Savior and build His Kingdom. >> Then may the God Who entrusts the next generation to 00:52:46.90\00:52:54.84 us empower us to equip them in the Holy Spirit's Kingdom mission to reach the 00:52:54.84\00:53:00.61 civilization before Christ returns. Even so, come, Lord 00:53:00.61\00:53:07.58 Jesus. >> Amen. Amen. >> And amen. 00:53:07.58\00:53:12.32 >> Loving heavenly Father, eternal Holy Spirit, and divine 00:53:12.49\00:53:16.62 Savior Jesus Christ, we come in the name of Jesus 00:53:16.62\00:53:19.86 into Your presence this morning. 00:53:19.86\00:53:21.63 We are standing here in Your presence. We come with gratitude 00:53:21.80\00:53:27.80 for Your protection, Your goodness and guidance in the past years. We have wandered 00:53:27.80\00:53:33.74 sometimes too often, and You have called us back to You. When we have stumbled, You have 00:53:33.74\00:53:39.91 lifted us up again. And we come and thank You for Your 00:53:39.91\00:53:45.99 commitment to us. We are unworthy, yet You have created and redeemed us. We praise You, 00:53:45.99\00:53:52.33 O Lord, for Your grace and Your mercy. Thank You for the glorious gift of the Cross and 00:53:52.33\00:53:58.13 the Resurrection. As the school year begins, we come before You 00:53:58.13\00:54:03.74 because we desperately need You. In our various capacities, we need to be sure that we kneel 00:54:03.74\00:54:10.68 before You as students of the science of salvation, so that our students may know Jesus as 00:54:10.68\00:54:16.45 their Savior and may live as faithful Seventh-Day Adventist 00:54:16.45\00:54:21.49 Christians. We come from diverse backgrounds, multiple ethnicities, so many languages. 00:54:21.49\00:54:28.23 Teach us, Lord, to respect each other, to respect diversity, but also, Lord, may we experience 00:54:28.23\00:54:35.00 the unity that the world does not know, a unity that we may 00:54:35.00\00:54:41.68 find in You alone. We dedicate ourselves to You, Master Teacher. In humble surrender, we 00:54:41.68\00:54:46.98 give You back our classrooms, our dorms, our appointments, our goals, our objectives, our 00:54:46.98\00:54:52.89 outcomes, yes, our budgets, and our agendas. We surrender all to 00:54:52.89\00:54:59.43 You. In fact, we dedicate this school year, this campus, our very lives, to You this year. 00:54:59.43\00:55:06.80 And we ask that through Your Spirit, Your grace, and Your mercy, we may be empowered, that 00:55:06.80\00:55:13.78 this may be the best school year ever -- not in our estimation but in Yours, the best year 00:55:13.78\00:55:20.65 ever at Andrews University. In Your holy name we pray and dedicate ourselves. 00:55:20.65\00:55:27.06 Amen. >> Amen.
