Okay. 00:16:36.22\00:16:38.16 You're okay with 50? 00:16:38.19\00:16:39.56 Yeah. Good. 00:16:39.59\00:16:40.93 So 50 pounds or under 00:16:40.96\00:16:43.50 and you could mail your child, anywhere in America. 00:16:43.53\00:16:48.04 That was back when they trust the mailman. 00:16:48.07\00:16:50.17 All right, and they say, 00:16:50.21\00:16:51.61 you would take the big mail babies in the mail. 00:16:51.64\00:16:54.08 No, I'm telling you the truth. 00:16:54.11\00:16:55.44 Look, you got the stamps 00:16:55.48\00:16:57.48 and if you show up at the post office, 00:16:57.51\00:16:59.55 they will take you to your loved one. 00:16:59.58\00:17:03.22 Wherever your mother wants to see you, send you, 00:17:03.25\00:17:05.02 wherever your daddy wants to send you. 00:17:05.05\00:17:06.49 In fact, listen to this, a 103 years ago right now 00:17:06.52\00:17:09.62 according to the Wall Street Journal... 00:17:09.66\00:17:10.99 I got it right here. 00:17:11.03\00:17:12.36 A 103 years ago February 1914 00:17:12.39\00:17:15.53 they had a little girl named May, 00:17:15.56\00:17:17.20 her name was May Pierstorff just shy of six, 00:17:17.23\00:17:22.20 mother said, I wanna mail you 00:17:22.24\00:17:23.57 from Grangeville, Idaho to Lewiston. 00:17:23.61\00:17:26.57 It was a distance of 73 miles 00:17:26.61\00:17:29.48 she was 48.5 pounds 00:17:29.51\00:17:31.28 so she's under the limit just barely. 00:17:31.31\00:17:33.75 And guess how much mama had to pay to mailman, 00:17:33.78\00:17:37.75 53 cents. 00:17:37.79\00:17:39.55 What? 00:25:03.10\00:25:07.87 Jesus a cornerstone could... 00:25:07.90\00:25:11.57 be a foundation for a brand new creation 00:25:11.61\00:25:17.15 in the little time we have left. 00:25:17.18\00:25:19.58 Let's pray. 00:25:19.61\00:25:20.95 Dear, God, thank You for the singers, 00:25:20.98\00:25:24.45 thank You for that song, 00:25:24.49\00:25:26.82 A cornerstone the a builders rejected... 00:25:26.86\00:25:33.63 of a whole new world, oh, we need... 00:25:33.66\00:25:36.63 Given what's been happening, 00:25:36.67\00:25:38.00 Father, we need that cornerstone right now. 00:25:38.03\00:25:42.60 So Jesus had at it, 00:25:42.64\00:25:43.97 please just gonna keep me out of the way, 00:25:44.01\00:25:47.91 maybe clear enough what we're about to share 00:25:47.94\00:25:52.15 so that we know what we must do. 00:25:52.18\00:25:55.95 You speak, we listen, 00:25:55.98\00:25:59.32 in the name of our Savior we pray, amen. 00:25:59.35\00:26:01.89 Something happened in this sanctuary on Thursday. 00:27:04.49\00:27:10.69 And it had God's fingerprints all over it. 00:27:10.73\00:27:14.73 I've never seen anything like it. 00:27:14.76\00:27:16.30 I've been attending chapels for over 30 years, 00:27:16.33\00:27:20.17 never, never one like this one. 00:27:20.20\00:27:24.91 And strangely enough, 00:27:24.94\00:27:26.27 it all began the weekend before, 00:27:26.31\00:27:29.54 last weekend. 00:27:29.58\00:27:31.48 A little video clip 00:27:31.51\00:27:32.85 produced and released by some black students 00:27:32.88\00:27:35.05 here at the University along with their campus pastor. 00:27:35.08\00:27:39.19 Hashtag it is time AU. 00:27:39.22\00:27:43.93 I saw the clip on Sunday, 00:27:43.96\00:27:46.86 100,000 others saw by the end of the week. 00:27:46.90\00:27:49.30 And I can summarize I think the message of that clip, 00:27:52.77\00:27:59.07 simple message really, something like this. 00:27:59.11\00:28:03.51 It's time for the faith community 00:28:03.55\00:28:04.88 that is on this campus that owns this university 00:28:04.91\00:28:10.72 to own up to the racial injustices 00:28:10.75\00:28:14.92 against black students in the past, 00:28:14.96\00:28:18.13 as well as to a lack of sensitivity 00:28:18.16\00:28:19.93 to in representation of black students in the present. 00:28:19.96\00:28:24.10 It's time to respond with an apology. 00:28:24.13\00:28:30.04 And so when the word went out 00:28:30.07\00:28:32.51 at the speed of light by the way 00:28:32.54\00:28:35.18 through social media, 00:28:35.21\00:28:37.98 the word, the news at the university, 00:28:38.01\00:28:40.02 and its administration had not only heard 00:28:40.05\00:28:42.08 these black students' message, 00:28:42.12\00:28:44.42 but would present a formal response 00:28:44.45\00:28:48.56 to their appeal at Thursday chapel. 00:28:48.59\00:28:54.13 I felt like whole world was here, 00:28:54.16\00:28:55.50 I've never seen a chapel so packed in my life. 00:28:55.53\00:28:57.73 And by the way the faculty staff forum 00:29:01.34\00:29:04.64 the Tuesday before this Thursday. 00:29:04.67\00:29:07.61 Somebody near the end of the forum got up 00:29:07.64\00:29:09.28 and said, "Yo, I think we need to have... 00:29:09.31\00:29:11.61 We need to call for a day of fasting and prayer 00:29:11.65\00:29:14.58 on the campus of Andrews University." 00:29:14.62\00:29:16.85 And so lead chaplain June Price and I were tasked 00:29:16.89\00:29:19.82 with spending Tuesday evening 00:29:19.85\00:29:21.32 crafting a call to prayer and fasting. 00:29:21.36\00:29:26.39 Went out Wednesday morning to every student, 00:29:26.43\00:29:28.20 every faculty member, every staff member 00:29:28.23\00:29:31.03 in this institution of higher learning. 00:29:31.07\00:29:34.47 And the suggested day of prayer was, okay, 00:29:34.50\00:29:36.44 Wednesday 7 pm to Thursday 7 pm. 00:29:36.47\00:29:39.97 Well, the beauty of that is Wednesday 7 pm we're here, 00:29:40.01\00:29:43.65 house of prayer, 00:29:43.68\00:29:46.05 on the beginning of that day of fasting and prayer. 00:29:46.08\00:29:49.02 And so we could not, 00:29:49.05\00:29:50.69 not come from out of the pews on to this platform, 00:29:50.72\00:29:56.29 and pray for the woman 00:29:56.32\00:29:58.26 who would stand in less than 00:29:58.29\00:30:01.76 24 hours at this spot, 00:30:01.80\00:30:05.33 and who would address this institution, 00:30:05.37\00:30:07.67 and through live streaming a whole lot more. 00:30:07.70\00:30:12.77 And so we prayed for three categories 00:30:12.81\00:30:16.75 one, the president, two, the students, 00:30:16.78\00:30:20.12 three, the faculty and staff. 00:30:20.15\00:30:22.05 Three volunteers, two of whom I've never met... 00:30:22.08\00:30:24.65 I could not tell you their names 00:30:24.69\00:30:26.62 but I wanna to tell you, I wanna testify to the passion, 00:30:26.65\00:30:30.73 and the earnestness of those three prayers 00:30:30.76\00:30:33.06 and everybody on this platform is swept 00:30:33.09\00:30:35.06 into those prayers 00:30:35.10\00:30:36.43 as they ascended the throne of God. 00:30:36.46\00:30:38.37 And so because it was a day of fasting and prayer, 00:30:38.40\00:30:40.97 when I walked into this chapel space 00:30:41.00\00:30:43.77 on Thursday morning, 00:30:43.81\00:30:45.81 I'm coming with a sense of expectancy as well, 00:30:45.84\00:30:49.58 turns out everybody else was too. 00:30:49.61\00:30:52.05 I'm not gonna rehearse what took place 00:30:52.08\00:30:53.42 during those 50 minutes in this space. 00:30:53.45\00:30:56.52 You can watch the entire service 00:30:56.55\00:30:58.05 on YouTube now. 00:30:58.09\00:31:01.06 But I can only tell you 00:31:01.09\00:31:02.42 that in the context of a day of fasting and prayer, 00:31:02.46\00:31:07.93 my spirit immediately recognized 00:31:07.96\00:31:09.86 there's something going on here. 00:31:09.90\00:31:12.13 From the opening prayer to the final prayer of appeal 00:31:12.17\00:31:16.57 both delivered by two of our chaplains. 00:31:16.60\00:31:20.58 For me it was absolutely crystal clear 00:31:20.61\00:31:25.31 that the spirit was in our midst 00:31:25.35\00:31:27.62 moving the details. 00:31:27.65\00:31:30.52 I sat in a group of black students, 00:31:30.55\00:31:34.09 listening keenly every one of them, me too. 00:31:34.12\00:31:39.49 And I'm starting to get moved by what's happening here 00:31:39.53\00:31:41.76 from the prayer at the beginning to the end 00:31:41.80\00:31:43.13 and in between the president in her own gracious humble way 00:31:43.16\00:31:47.47 begins to speak from her heart, 00:31:47.50\00:31:49.20 she goes to Mark 2... 00:31:49.24\00:31:50.97 I've never heard anybody interpret the story in Mark 2, 00:31:51.01\00:31:54.71 the way she did and I said to myself 00:31:54.74\00:31:56.68 Holy Spirit way to go. 00:31:56.71\00:32:00.52 You got it... Just go, you watch it on YouTube. 00:32:00.55\00:32:02.98 And I'm beginning to resort 00:32:06.39\00:32:08.66 to the universal motion for emotion. 00:32:08.69\00:32:11.49 You know, what that universal motion 00:32:11.53\00:32:12.86 for emotion is. 00:32:12.89\00:32:14.23 And I'm seeing the students around me going like this. 00:32:16.77\00:32:18.53 God was here. 00:32:21.74\00:32:24.61 He was moving on us all. 00:32:24.64\00:32:27.18 But for worship this morning, in the same space here we are, 00:32:27.21\00:32:31.41 exactly two days later 00:32:31.45\00:32:33.88 we have not come to rehearse but it's already happened. 00:32:33.92\00:32:37.99 Rather we must seriously ponder now... come on. 00:32:38.02\00:32:40.42 We got to ponder now, what needs to happen next, 00:32:40.46\00:32:42.92 right here in this campus church. 00:32:42.96\00:32:45.26 It's a only space I can talk to. 00:32:45.29\00:32:47.90 But in the space of faith community churches 00:32:47.93\00:32:52.70 all across this nation 00:32:52.73\00:32:54.34 and I'm thinking of America right now. 00:32:54.37\00:32:57.34 What is it to God would have us 00:32:57.37\00:32:58.94 as Seventh-day Adventist do next. 00:32:58.97\00:33:01.44 I'm talking about racial reconciliation, 00:33:01.48\00:33:04.25 I'm talking about the unspoken, unhidden agenda 00:33:04.28\00:33:06.92 that like the proverbial elephant 00:33:06.95\00:33:08.28 is sitting on top of us 00:33:08.32\00:33:09.65 whenever we gather as blacks, and reds, and yellows, 00:33:09.68\00:33:11.95 and whites, and browns in one space, 00:33:11.99\00:33:13.76 that elephant is sitting on all of us, 00:33:13.79\00:33:15.29 and we know exactly what it is, it's racism. 00:33:15.32\00:33:20.83 It may not look like the 1950s and the 1960s, 00:33:20.86\00:33:23.63 it is very suddenly different perhaps 00:33:23.67\00:33:26.00 but it's still racism. 00:33:26.03\00:33:30.64 And the truth is, 00:33:30.67\00:33:32.41 racism did not disappear on Thursday. 00:33:32.44\00:33:36.18 Today is Sabbath. 00:33:36.21\00:33:38.61 A new day and a new week are about to begin. 00:33:38.65\00:33:42.12 We need to confront the truth. 00:33:42.15\00:33:48.52 I wrote my weekly blog on Wednesday. 00:33:48.56\00:33:53.03 And with your permission 00:33:53.06\00:33:54.76 I'm gonna read that blog right now. 00:33:54.80\00:33:57.50 But I wanna read it without your permission. 00:33:57.53\00:34:02.74 You can get the blog by the way online. 00:34:02.77\00:34:04.91 And if you go to my blog online, 00:34:04.94\00:34:06.94 at the bottom of the blog 00:34:06.98\00:34:08.31 will be a link to everything that happened Thursday, 00:34:08.34\00:34:11.21 Andrews University, everything. 00:34:11.25\00:34:13.68 So as title of the blog is, "How can you heal the pain, 00:34:13.72\00:34:17.05 when you can't feel the pain?" 00:34:17.09\00:34:20.22 www.newperceptions.tv 00:34:20.26\00:34:22.66 those of you watching right now live streaming 00:34:22.69\00:34:24.43 from somewhere on earth 00:34:24.46\00:34:26.56 or you watching it later on a television program. 00:34:26.59\00:34:28.90 The blog begins this way, 00:34:28.93\00:34:30.27 how can you heal someone's pain, 00:34:30.30\00:34:31.63 when you can't feel someone's pain? 00:34:31.67\00:34:33.34 There is a pain deep within our faith community 00:34:33.37\00:34:35.50 and our university campus. 00:34:35.54\00:34:37.37 And the truth is most of us can't feel it. 00:34:37.41\00:34:39.77 How could we possibly feel it, we're white? 00:34:39.81\00:34:42.38 Years ago a friend gave me a book 00:34:45.71\00:34:47.05 that I never got around to reading 00:34:47.08\00:34:48.42 until a few days ago. 00:34:48.45\00:34:50.09 It's Paul Kivel's exploration, titled Upending Racism: 00:34:50.12\00:34:53.69 How White People Can Work for Racial Justice. 00:34:53.72\00:34:56.79 One glance at the title back then 00:34:56.83\00:34:58.29 and I knew this wouldn't be book for me, 00:34:58.33\00:34:59.93 since I'm not a racist, 00:34:59.96\00:35:01.30 since I see very little of any racism around me, 00:35:01.33\00:35:03.33 so why should I worry? 00:35:03.37\00:35:04.70 That was 20 years ago. 00:35:04.73\00:35:06.47 Now the book speaks volumes to me. 00:35:06.50\00:35:09.74 I put a few words from the book on the screen for you. 00:35:09.77\00:35:12.64 This is Kivel writing. 00:35:12.67\00:35:14.01 "It is not necessarily a privilege to be white, 00:35:14.04\00:35:17.45 but it certainly has its benefits... 00:35:17.48\00:35:21.45 Privileges are economic 'extras' 00:35:21.48\00:35:23.45 that those of us who are middle class 00:35:23.49\00:35:25.35 and wealthy gain at the expense of poor 00:35:25.39\00:35:27.02 and working class people of all races. 00:35:27.06\00:35:29.32 Now hold on. 00:35:29.36\00:35:30.69 Benefits, on the other hand, 00:35:30.73\00:35:32.26 are the advantages that all white people gain 00:35:32.29\00:35:35.13 at the expense of people of color 00:35:35.16\00:35:36.97 regardless of economic position... 00:35:37.00\00:35:39.50 Just because we don't have the economic privileges 00:35:39.53\00:35:41.50 of those with more money doesn't mean we haven't enjoyed 00:35:41.54\00:35:44.87 some of the benefits of being white." 00:35:44.91\00:35:48.28 And then Kivel runs through for me 00:35:48.31\00:35:50.55 an eye opening checklist of such privileges. 00:35:50.58\00:35:53.92 And this is just six of them, 00:35:53.95\00:35:55.78 they're two pages worth in his book. 00:35:55.82\00:35:58.12 Let me run six of them by. 00:35:58.15\00:35:59.49 One, "We whites are able to count on 00:35:59.52\00:36:02.09 police protection rather than harassment. 00:36:02.12\00:36:04.46 Two, we're able to choose where we want to live 00:36:04.49\00:36:06.86 with safe neighborhoods and decent schools. 00:36:06.90\00:36:08.83 Three, we're given more attention, 00:36:08.86\00:36:10.70 respect and status in conversations 00:36:10.73\00:36:12.47 than people of color. 00:36:12.50\00:36:13.84 Four, in news, music, history books, and the media 00:36:13.87\00:36:16.40 we see people who look like us in a positive light. 00:36:16.44\00:36:19.51 Five, we have more access, 00:36:19.54\00:36:21.31 credibility, and recourse with lawyers and courts. 00:36:21.34\00:36:23.98 Six, nothing that we do is qualified, limited, 00:36:24.01\00:36:26.58 discredited, or acclaimed simply 00:36:26.61\00:36:28.28 because of our racial background." 00:36:28.32\00:36:32.25 And then he says by the way that's not when you're adult 00:36:32.29\00:36:34.79 and white privilege actually starts 00:36:34.82\00:36:36.52 when you're a child. 00:36:36.56\00:36:37.93 And he runs by five, one, 00:36:37.96\00:36:40.26 "People around us will have higher expectations 00:36:40.30\00:36:42.73 for us as children. 00:36:42.76\00:36:44.33 Two, more money will be spent on our schools. 00:36:44.37\00:36:47.04 Three, we'll get called on more times in class. 00:36:47.07\00:36:49.44 Four, we will see people 00:36:49.47\00:36:50.91 who look like us in our textbooks. 00:36:50.94\00:36:52.44 Five, and if we get into trouble 00:36:52.47\00:36:54.41 adults will expect us 00:36:54.44\00:36:55.78 to be able to change and improve, 00:36:55.81\00:36:57.15 and therefore will discipline or penalize us less 00:36:57.18\00:36:59.78 or differently than children of color." 00:36:59.81\00:37:04.09 Kivel concludes his words on the screen. 00:37:04.12\00:37:07.46 "All else being equal, it pays to be white. 00:37:07.49\00:37:11.99 We will be accepted, acknowledged, 00:37:12.03\00:37:13.50 and given the benefit of the doubt. 00:37:13.53\00:37:15.33 Since all else is not equal 00:37:15.36\00:37:16.77 we each receive different benefits 00:37:16.80\00:37:18.67 or different levels of the same benefits 00:37:18.70\00:37:20.77 from being white." 00:37:20.80\00:37:23.74 So the question repeats itself, 00:37:23.77\00:37:25.31 "How can you possibly heal someone's pain, 00:37:25.34\00:37:27.81 when you can't feel someone's pain?" 00:37:27.84\00:37:31.48 The blog moving to its wrap. 00:37:31.51\00:37:33.85 Ask the Good Samaritan. 00:37:33.88\00:37:35.52 The crime victim was a Jew, and Jews hated Samaritans. 00:37:35.55\00:37:38.32 So why should the Samaritan bother at all? 00:37:38.35\00:37:40.76 He couldn't feel the victim's pain. 00:37:40.79\00:37:42.62 But as Martin Luther King, 00:37:42.66\00:37:43.99 Jr. observed about Jesus' parable. 00:37:44.03\00:37:46.23 Whereas the priest and the Levite fretted, 00:37:46.26\00:37:48.66 "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" 00:37:48.70\00:37:51.57 The Samaritan asked, 00:37:51.60\00:37:53.57 "If I do not stop to help this man, 00:37:53.60\00:37:55.47 what will happen to him?" 00:37:55.50\00:37:58.27 And there is a universe of difference. 00:37:58.31\00:38:00.64 Got that from a biography of Martin Luther 00:38:00.68\00:38:02.94 that I have in my library, "Let the trumpet sound." 00:38:02.98\00:38:06.35 What will happen to him? What will happen to her? 00:38:06.38\00:38:08.22 What will happen to them if I don't stop 00:38:08.25\00:38:09.75 and pour myself into their pain? 00:38:09.78\00:38:11.92 It's the golden rule hammered out 00:38:11.95\00:38:13.99 in the crucible of another's pain. 00:38:14.02\00:38:16.09 The Samaritan knelt beside the victim 00:38:16.12\00:38:18.33 and administered to him 00:38:18.36\00:38:20.00 the emotional and physical intervention 00:38:20.03\00:38:22.26 the brutalized man desperately needed. 00:38:22.30\00:38:26.30 And in his self-sacrificial love 00:38:26.33\00:38:27.90 for his neighbor, 00:38:27.94\00:38:29.27 we see not only the truth about Christ 00:38:29.30\00:38:31.61 who knelt beside us at Calvary 00:38:31.64\00:38:33.31 because that's exactly what Jesus did at the cross, 00:38:33.34\00:38:35.38 He knelt beside us. 00:38:35.41\00:38:37.48 But we also see the truth 00:38:37.51\00:38:38.91 Christ calls His radical followers to embrace 00:38:38.95\00:38:41.78 as you would have others treat you, 00:38:41.82\00:38:44.52 you treat them. 00:38:44.55\00:38:47.39 Final line, there is a pain deep 00:38:47.42\00:38:49.69 within our faith community and our university campus. 00:38:49.72\00:38:53.03 It may not be your pain 00:38:53.06\00:38:54.46 but until it becomes your business, 00:38:54.50\00:38:57.83 the pain, plain and simple cannot 00:38:57.87\00:39:00.27 and will not be healed in the school, 00:39:00.30\00:39:03.64 in the church, in our own hearts. 00:39:03.67\00:39:06.64 The end. 00:39:06.68\00:39:11.28 Young friend of mine 00:39:11.31\00:39:13.21 an African-American attorney wrote me 00:39:13.25\00:39:16.99 after reading the blog. 00:39:17.02\00:39:21.16 "Pastor Dwight, how is everything going? 00:39:21.19\00:39:24.86 I pray and hope that you are doing well. 00:39:24.89\00:39:26.86 First of all, I wanna let you know 00:39:26.90\00:39:29.36 that I was deeply moved by your blog yesterday. 00:39:29.40\00:39:32.57 What I connected with most was the genuine Spirit, 00:39:32.60\00:39:34.87 capital S, Spirit behind it. 00:39:34.90\00:39:37.41 As you prepared to minister this coming Sabbath, 00:39:37.44\00:39:39.67 I feel impressed to simply say don't hold back. 00:39:39.71\00:39:42.54 I don't know what God is impressing upon you to say 00:39:42.58\00:39:45.01 but I implore you to let the Spirit lead you 00:39:45.05\00:39:47.62 as you help ShepherdPMC, AU campus, 00:39:47.65\00:39:50.15 and the surrounding community 00:39:50.19\00:39:51.52 through this process of transparency and healing." 00:39:51.55\00:39:54.72 And then he observes, 00:39:54.76\00:39:56.09 "We are at a critical point in our church's history 00:39:56.12\00:39:58.93 and I believe that we are at a time 00:39:58.96\00:40:00.43 in which we will no longer be able to hide 00:40:00.46\00:40:02.36 from these questions, and sweep things under the rug, 00:40:02.40\00:40:05.27 regardless of how folks may feel 00:40:05.30\00:40:07.07 about the method chosen by, it is time AU team. 00:40:07.10\00:40:10.74 It has brought us to this critical moment 00:40:10.77\00:40:12.87 and there is no turning back. 00:40:12.91\00:40:16.85 No going back to the old passive 00:40:16.88\00:40:18.75 non-confrontational fairytale of post racial harmony 00:40:18.78\00:40:22.45 that we have tried to convince ourselves 00:40:22.48\00:40:24.02 is true knowing all along it was a lie, 00:40:24.05\00:40:26.65 it is time for us, all of us to take a look in the mirror, 00:40:26.69\00:40:30.26 and start getting unapologetically real 00:40:30.29\00:40:33.03 with ourselves and with each other. 00:40:33.06\00:40:35.06 I wanted you to know that I'm praying for you. 00:40:35.10\00:40:37.43 We're stronger together and we will make it 00:40:37.47\00:40:39.17 through these difficult days 00:40:39.20\00:40:40.64 with our eyes fixed on the promise 00:40:40.67\00:40:42.17 that He will be with us, guide us, hold us, carry us, 00:40:42.20\00:40:44.77 and empower us until our faith is made site. 00:40:44.81\00:40:48.34 Let me know if there's any way I can be of assistance to you 00:40:48.38\00:40:51.35 with love and respect." 00:40:51.38\00:40:52.78 He signs his name. 00:40:52.81\00:40:55.12 Now he does not know this Andrews University alum. 00:40:55.15\00:40:58.29 He does not know 00:40:58.32\00:40:59.65 that when he sent me that email. 00:40:59.69\00:41:01.32 Before I read it I was on my knees 00:41:01.36\00:41:05.83 because I'm writing a sermon for Sabbath, 00:41:05.86\00:41:07.23 it's the next in this series. 00:41:07.26\00:41:09.00 But all the while that I'm writing, 00:41:09.03\00:41:10.40 it is now getting late in the afternoon, 00:41:10.43\00:41:12.20 there's just a sense 00:41:12.23\00:41:13.57 that maybe I should not be writing the sermon. 00:41:13.60\00:41:15.97 Maybe I should be writing another sermon right now. 00:41:16.00\00:41:19.94 And finally I went to... 00:41:19.97\00:41:21.31 I was so bothered by it, I went to my knees, 00:41:21.34\00:41:22.68 and I said, "God, what's going on here?" 00:41:22.71\00:41:25.11 I said, "God, its' 3 o'clock in the afternoon. 00:41:25.15\00:41:29.52 I need to know very clearly whether You want this or not, 00:41:29.55\00:41:33.05 and so here's the deal I'm giving you 30 minutes. 00:41:33.09\00:41:36.93 Thirty minutes you send me a text, 00:41:36.96\00:41:39.06 you send me a phone call, somebody walk into my room, 00:41:39.09\00:41:42.23 somebody sends me an e-mail, I don't care. 00:41:42.26\00:41:43.90 You send in 30 minutes you get word to me." 00:41:43.93\00:41:47.27 And then I went back to my knees, 00:41:47.30\00:41:48.80 prayed for bit, got up, 00:41:48.84\00:41:50.17 and said, "Man, I can't sit around here, 00:41:50.21\00:41:51.54 I got to keep working on the sermon." 00:41:51.57\00:41:52.91 So I kept writing 00:41:52.94\00:41:54.28 and I finally look down at my watch, 00:41:54.31\00:41:55.64 it was 34 minutes past 3. 00:41:55.68\00:41:59.08 I went to my phone, I said no text messages, 00:41:59.11\00:42:02.55 no phone messages, well, I'm gonna try email 00:42:02.58\00:42:04.55 so I go email and I see his name, 00:42:04.59\00:42:06.12 and see the email and I opened it up 00:42:06.15\00:42:07.72 what I just read to you. 00:42:07.76\00:42:09.22 And God said to me, "Boy, that's your answer." 00:42:09.26\00:42:14.36 That was my answer, so I pushed everything aside, 00:42:14.40\00:42:16.26 I said, "Okay, it's 4 o' clock now, 00:42:16.30\00:42:18.40 let's start over." 00:42:18.43\00:42:19.77 So here we are 00:42:25.77\00:42:27.21 you and I in a predominantly white congregation. 00:42:27.24\00:42:30.31 Just look around. 00:42:30.35\00:42:31.68 Pretty much unaware at least I was that we have grown up 00:42:34.48\00:42:37.09 all of us whites 00:42:37.12\00:42:38.55 with a legacy of white privilege. 00:42:38.59\00:42:41.49 And if I might be honest with you 00:42:41.52\00:42:43.86 because I recognize this in my own heart, 00:42:43.89\00:42:46.29 we have unconsciously... 00:42:46.33\00:42:47.66 And by the way that's a key word, 00:42:47.70\00:42:49.03 that's a key word, 00:42:49.06\00:42:50.40 we have unconsciously because nobody sets out 00:42:50.43\00:42:52.67 to embrace racial bias. 00:42:52.70\00:42:55.34 We have unconsciously grown up 00:42:55.37\00:42:57.31 with a modified Jewish male prayer God. 00:42:57.34\00:43:00.38 I thank you, I was not born a pagan, 00:43:00.41\00:43:02.24 I was not born a woman, and I was not born black. 00:43:02.28\00:43:05.15 Why? 00:43:09.58\00:43:11.75 Because you don't have to be a genius to know 00:43:11.79\00:43:14.42 that if you're a white and particularly 00:43:14.46\00:43:15.92 if you're a white male in this country, 00:43:15.96\00:43:17.53 you live with a package of privileges, 00:43:17.56\00:43:19.43 and prerogatives of advantages, 00:43:19.46\00:43:21.20 and accoutrements that your black neighbors, 00:43:21.23\00:43:22.83 and your black colleagues, and your black friends 00:43:22.86\00:43:24.67 never get to live with never, never, never. 00:43:24.70\00:43:29.57 And you know by the way... 00:43:29.60\00:43:31.24 Listen to me carefully now, you know, they know, 00:43:31.27\00:43:36.01 but you pretend you don't know. 00:43:36.04\00:43:40.88 We pretend we don't know 00:43:40.92\00:43:42.25 that all this fuss about justice 00:43:42.28\00:43:43.62 and equality is a carry over, 00:43:43.65\00:43:44.99 it's a vestige from a generation long ago. 00:43:45.02\00:43:47.26 But when I read Kivel's book, 00:43:47.29\00:43:49.12 I suddenly realized how much white privilege 00:43:49.16\00:43:52.06 it has been my privilege to enjoy. 00:43:52.09\00:43:54.36 And that my white, friends, is what those black students 00:43:57.77\00:44:01.44 were reacting to when they said, 00:44:01.47\00:44:03.81 "Enough is enough, 00:44:03.84\00:44:06.07 it is time to fish, or cut bait." 00:44:06.11\00:44:08.94 Take a week to decide how to respond 00:44:08.98\00:44:10.68 but respond you must. 00:44:10.71\00:44:12.61 It was not an ultimatum. 00:44:12.65\00:44:15.42 Now looking at it 00:44:15.45\00:44:16.79 through our white privilege glasses, 00:44:16.82\00:44:18.19 it may have felt like a ultimatum. 00:44:18.22\00:44:20.22 It was not, it was a plea. 00:44:20.26\00:44:23.06 We know, that you know, that we know, 00:44:23.09\00:44:26.09 you live with white privilege so what we're asking, 00:44:26.13\00:44:29.03 will you do for us? 00:44:29.06\00:44:32.50 Don't tell us manana, we need to know now, 00:44:32.53\00:44:37.77 that was the plea. 00:44:37.81\00:44:40.21 And they're right. 00:44:40.24\00:44:42.44 We must respond. 00:44:42.48\00:44:47.22 And I wanna say on behalf of nobody 00:44:47.25\00:44:51.65 and that's generally the best person 00:44:51.69\00:44:53.02 to be talking for. 00:44:53.05\00:44:55.42 I wanna say on behalf of nobody that I must respond. 00:44:55.46\00:44:58.79 Our president with humility and clarity 00:44:58.83\00:45:01.36 announced the beginning 00:45:01.40\00:45:02.73 of Andrews University's response, 00:45:02.76\00:45:06.43 and I will do all I can to help in any way 00:45:06.47\00:45:08.70 to assist her in this university 00:45:08.74\00:45:10.41 in a continuing response. 00:45:10.44\00:45:12.44 You know, why, because I happen to believe God's promise 00:45:12.47\00:45:14.18 and I know that you do too. 00:45:14.21\00:45:15.54 And I put the promise on the screen 00:45:15.58\00:45:16.91 for you Philippians 1:6. 00:45:16.95\00:45:18.28 I love this promise. 00:45:18.31\00:45:19.85 "I am confident of this, 00:45:19.88\00:45:21.82 that the One who began a good work 00:45:21.85\00:45:23.18 among you will bring it to completion 00:45:23.22\00:45:24.95 by the day of Jesus Christ." 00:45:24.99\00:45:27.49 God never start something that He doesn't finish. 00:45:27.52\00:45:29.86 And I'm telling you 00:45:29.89\00:45:31.23 He started something on Thursday, 00:45:31.26\00:45:32.59 His fingerprints were all over this place. 00:45:32.63\00:45:36.26 And so we can't just twiddle our thumbs down 00:45:36.30\00:45:37.63 and sit back well, 00:45:37.67\00:45:39.00 by the day of Jesus Christ come on, 00:45:39.03\00:45:40.37 even so come, Lord Jesus, get it done, get it done. 00:45:40.40\00:45:42.80 No, Jesus says, "I'm not coming." 00:45:42.84\00:45:45.41 You got work to do, 00:45:45.44\00:45:46.84 don't you keep praying that prayer even so come, 00:45:46.88\00:45:48.58 Lord Jesus, until you do 00:45:48.61\00:45:51.21 what the Lord Jesus has commanded you to do. 00:45:51.25\00:45:54.08 "You obey me. 00:45:54.12\00:45:55.65 When you obey me, 00:45:55.68\00:45:57.25 you will do what I'm asking you to do, 00:45:57.29\00:46:01.06 and then you'll heal 00:46:01.09\00:46:03.63 this gaping wound in yourself." 00:46:03.66\00:46:08.36 What wound? What command? The 11th commandment, come on. 00:46:08.40\00:46:13.57 I want you to look it up. Come on in your Bible. 00:46:13.60\00:46:15.60 John 13, you got a Bible, pull your Bible out to John 13, 00:46:15.64\00:46:20.31 red letter words, 00:46:20.34\00:46:21.68 this is less than 12 hours and Jesus would be... 00:46:21.71\00:46:24.38 About 12 hours He'll be hanging on the cross, 00:46:24.41\00:46:27.35 He will die, He knows He's gonna die. 00:46:27.38\00:46:31.55 He's on death row but before He dies 00:46:31.59\00:46:34.29 something is passionately important to Him, 00:46:34.32\00:46:38.13 and He gets it out 31 times in this passage, 00:46:38.16\00:46:40.56 He will use the word love. 00:46:40.60\00:46:41.93 Thirty one times, I've counted them. 00:46:41.96\00:46:44.07 This is not a little passing fancy. 00:46:44.10\00:46:46.74 Verse 34 red letters. 00:46:46.77\00:46:48.10 "A new commandment I give you..." 00:46:48.14\00:46:50.11 John 13:34 and 35, 00:46:50.14\00:46:51.91 "Love one another, as I have loved you, 00:46:51.94\00:46:54.08 so you must love one another. 00:46:54.11\00:46:55.44 By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, 00:46:55.48\00:46:57.71 if you love one another." 00:46:57.75\00:46:59.51 Ladies and gentlemen, 00:46:59.55\00:47:00.88 you have to admit that the 11th commandment 00:47:00.92\00:47:02.75 is all about racial reconciliation. 00:47:02.78\00:47:05.45 If it's about anything, 00:47:05.49\00:47:06.82 it's about racial reconciliation, 00:47:06.86\00:47:08.22 it has to be. 00:47:08.26\00:47:10.49 Within the faith community, 00:47:10.53\00:47:12.99 which means to experience racial reconciliation 00:47:13.03\00:47:16.33 we must take two steps. 00:47:16.36\00:47:17.80 Let me share with you these two steps, 00:47:17.83\00:47:19.20 and then one story, and I'm done. 00:47:19.23\00:47:21.34 All right. 00:47:21.37\00:47:22.70 Two steps, no study guide, you just gonna get it. 00:47:22.74\00:47:26.27 Two steps. 00:47:26.31\00:47:27.64 Step number one, 00:47:27.68\00:47:29.01 we must admit our white privilege. 00:47:29.04\00:47:33.28 Read it on the screen so that sticks in your mind, 00:47:33.31\00:47:35.18 don't just listen to my voice. 00:47:35.22\00:47:36.55 We must admit our white privilege. 00:47:36.58\00:47:41.32 I'm not saying we must confess it. 00:47:41.36\00:47:43.22 No, no, no, we were born into it, 00:47:43.26\00:47:44.93 never chosen, 00:47:44.96\00:47:46.29 never thought about it even, not enough to care. 00:47:46.33\00:47:49.86 But racial reconciliation must begin 00:47:49.90\00:47:51.83 with us admitting that we have lived, 00:47:51.87\00:47:53.97 we have profited, we have flourished 00:47:54.00\00:47:55.94 because of white privilege, and by not knowing that, 00:47:55.97\00:47:59.37 or by at least ignoring it, 00:47:59.41\00:48:00.74 we have inadvertently forced others 00:48:00.78\00:48:02.51 who are not quite like us to live 00:48:02.54\00:48:05.21 without those privileges, 00:48:05.25\00:48:06.61 without those benefits even in the church. 00:48:06.65\00:48:12.15 The church has someone doing to do at the national level. 00:48:12.19\00:48:14.92 I'm absolutely convinced of it, but that's not my business, 00:48:14.96\00:48:19.26 that's for somebody with a higher pay grade 00:48:19.29\00:48:21.20 to deal with. 00:48:21.23\00:48:24.07 All we can deal with this at the local church 00:48:24.10\00:48:25.43 and that's where we ought to keep our attention. 00:48:25.47\00:48:28.07 When I talk about this local church, 00:48:28.10\00:48:29.77 one of the privileges we enjoy 00:48:29.80\00:48:31.14 it's a house of prayer for all people 00:48:31.17\00:48:32.64 is this spacious sanctuary. 00:48:32.67\00:48:36.01 My favorite place on earth. 00:48:36.04\00:48:37.55 Middle of the night when there's nobody here 00:48:37.58\00:48:39.25 but me and God, 00:48:39.28\00:48:40.62 middle of the day on a Sabbath it's just a beautiful place. 00:48:40.65\00:48:45.12 We are here in this space while our friends at new life, 00:48:45.15\00:48:50.49 a predominately African-American 00:48:50.53\00:48:51.93 worship community on campus are packed 00:48:51.96\00:48:53.66 into the seminary chapel 00:48:53.70\00:48:55.03 and they're given one shot at that space. 00:48:55.06\00:48:57.33 One shot. 00:48:57.37\00:48:58.70 Spilling out into the atrium, wherever they can find space, 00:48:58.73\00:49:01.70 and here we are a 100 yards away, 00:49:01.74\00:49:03.20 and we have space to spare. 00:49:03.24\00:49:06.51 White privilege, could it be that 00:49:06.54\00:49:10.45 there is some way to share space. 00:49:10.48\00:49:15.08 Step number one, 00:49:19.99\00:49:22.29 we must admit our white privilege, 00:49:22.32\00:49:24.59 until we do 00:49:24.63\00:49:25.96 we will never take step number two, 00:49:25.99\00:49:27.86 I promise you will never take it. 00:49:27.90\00:49:29.23 What step number two, on the screen. 00:49:29.26\00:49:30.70 We must relinquish, we must relinquish 00:49:30.73\00:49:34.67 our white privilege, how? 00:49:34.70\00:49:38.24 Hey, folks this is not complicated at all, 00:49:38.27\00:49:39.91 you're gonna be surprised at this. 00:49:39.94\00:49:42.31 Listen, the best and most effective way 00:49:42.34\00:49:45.18 to relinquish your privilege is to simply make sure 00:49:45.21\00:49:48.25 everyone enjoys the same privilege, 00:49:48.28\00:49:50.19 then it's no longer a privilege, 00:49:50.22\00:49:51.55 it's a blessing shared. 00:49:51.59\00:49:54.36 The moment we release it as mine, 00:49:54.39\00:49:57.19 it's over, it's no longer a privilege 00:49:57.23\00:49:58.93 because everybody gets it. 00:49:58.96\00:50:02.03 That didn't hurt, did it? No. 00:50:02.06\00:50:07.64 Red and yellow, black and white, 00:50:07.67\00:50:09.00 all are precious in His sight, 00:50:09.04\00:50:10.44 we've been taught since knee-high to a grasshopper 00:50:10.47\00:50:12.67 to sing those words and we have. 00:50:12.71\00:50:16.75 And if it take somebody to come up to me and say, 00:50:16.78\00:50:18.38 "Hey, by the way, Dwight, 00:50:18.41\00:50:19.91 I see that you enjoy a privilege, 00:50:19.95\00:50:21.28 I've never been granted." 00:50:21.32\00:50:22.65 Do you know what my response needs to be? 00:50:22.68\00:50:24.35 It needs to be, "You know, what I didn't realize it. 00:50:24.39\00:50:26.29 Let me go to work to make sure this privilege is also yours 00:50:26.32\00:50:29.96 and that will be a shared blessing." 00:50:29.99\00:50:32.29 Right? 00:50:32.33\00:50:34.30 We have work to do. We've got to go to work. 00:50:34.33\00:50:38.00 Well, I let them do it. 00:50:38.03\00:50:39.37 Well, I'll let the university do it. 00:50:39.40\00:50:41.54 We're a campus church so we don't have to do it 00:50:41.57\00:50:43.41 because we're part community and part campus anyway. 00:50:43.44\00:50:46.64 Good luck, Andrews University, we're cheering you on, 00:50:46.68\00:50:48.74 we're praying for you. 00:50:48.78\00:50:50.11 No, no, no, you can't do that. 00:50:50.15\00:50:51.48 You can't, we can't get, that be arsenide. 00:50:51.51\00:50:56.38 We have to respond. 00:50:56.42\00:50:57.85 Relinquish white privilege. 00:51:01.89\00:51:05.03 Because until we're sitting together 00:51:05.06\00:51:06.39 at the same table and transparently, 00:51:06.43\00:51:08.90 authentically listening 00:51:08.93\00:51:10.27 to our black brothers and sisters, 00:51:10.30\00:51:11.63 we will never spot the privileges 00:51:11.67\00:51:13.13 we've taken for granted all our lives as whites. 00:51:13.17\00:51:16.81 I repeat the best way for us to step away 00:51:16.84\00:51:19.54 from our white privilege is to devote our lives 00:51:19.57\00:51:21.48 to making certain everyone enjoys 00:51:21.51\00:51:23.41 the same privilege we benefit from. 00:51:23.45\00:51:25.51 And since privileges are never skin color based. 00:51:25.55\00:51:31.59 And since God's blessings and benefits 00:51:31.62\00:51:33.46 are never skin color based, 00:51:33.49\00:51:38.73 we've had to find a way. 00:51:38.76\00:51:41.36 We have to do something. 00:51:41.40\00:51:45.77 What did Jesus say, "A new commandment I give you 00:51:45.80\00:51:48.74 that you love one another as I have loved you. 00:51:48.77\00:51:51.74 By this the whole world..." 00:51:51.77\00:51:53.11 I love that. 00:51:53.14\00:51:54.48 "By this the whole world will know you are My people, 00:51:54.51\00:52:00.02 if you have love for one another." 00:52:00.05\00:52:03.55 Our journey towards obedience of the 11th commandment 00:52:03.59\00:52:05.75 began on Thursday, it is now Sabbath, 00:52:05.79\00:52:09.72 tomorrow a new week and a new chapter begins. 00:52:09.76\00:52:14.50 But it must begin with you and me, 00:52:18.00\00:52:19.93 and all of us sitting at the same table. 00:52:19.97\00:52:22.60 I need to hear your story. 00:52:22.64\00:52:24.57 I need you to be honest about the pain that you suffer 00:52:24.61\00:52:28.98 because until we share our stories, 00:52:29.01\00:52:32.55 we will never share our pain, and until we share our pain 00:52:32.58\00:52:37.52 we will never find the healing that we desperately need. 00:52:37.55\00:52:40.62 We can't, we can't. 00:52:40.66\00:52:44.39 And by the way, until we share our pain, 00:52:44.43\00:52:47.40 and find that healing, a nation that is fractured, 00:52:47.43\00:52:51.03 and broken, and bleeding to the core racially 00:52:51.07\00:52:55.70 will never think to look 00:52:55.74\00:52:58.41 at this faith community for help, 00:52:58.44\00:53:02.24 their shadows will never darken our doors 00:53:02.28\00:53:06.28 because they say, 00:53:06.31\00:53:07.68 "You got the same problem we do. 00:53:07.72\00:53:10.12 What good is your belief." 00:53:10.15\00:53:13.15 The great Christian apologist of 20th century C.S. Lewis. 00:53:17.86\00:53:22.73 Got a letter one day from an American woman. 00:53:22.76\00:53:26.00 She might have read something that he had written 00:53:26.03\00:53:29.87 or she had a questions 00:53:29.90\00:53:31.24 that I write to this bright mind in England 00:53:31.27\00:53:33.54 across the pond so she sent the letter, 00:53:33.58\00:53:36.51 Lewis read the letter. 00:53:36.54\00:53:39.31 He was a gracious man 00:53:39.35\00:53:40.68 and he answered much of his correspondence 00:53:40.72\00:53:42.12 so something prompted him, he said, "I'll answer her." 00:53:42.15\00:53:44.59 So he answers her. 00:53:44.62\00:53:46.15 I don't know how much time goes by, 00:53:46.19\00:53:47.52 mail travel a little slower back in the 60s before he died. 00:53:47.56\00:53:52.29 But another letter comes from the woman, 00:53:52.33\00:53:55.16 another question, another comment, 00:53:55.20\00:53:57.30 he picks his pen up, shoots an answer back. 00:53:57.33\00:54:00.70 Soon letters are going like this, 00:54:00.74\00:54:02.20 they never met face to face. 00:54:02.24\00:54:05.57 These are not love letters. 00:54:05.61\00:54:07.31 She was just writing the great mind, the great man, 00:54:07.34\00:54:10.31 and asking him. 00:54:10.35\00:54:12.75 He died the day JFK was assassinated, he died. 00:54:12.78\00:54:17.09 In the world his death is totally obscured 00:54:17.12\00:54:19.62 by the tragedy here. 00:54:19.65\00:54:22.72 She eventually died and her family get this, 00:54:22.76\00:54:25.89 her family took the letters 00:54:25.93\00:54:27.26 that she had received from C.S.
