>> Well, Happy Sabbath, PMC. Let's go ahead and start off our song service set with a word of 00:01:08.43\00:01:13.77 prayer. Let's bow our heads. 00:01:13.77\00:01:16.27 Dear Lord, I ask You that You be with us now. 00:01:17.41\00:01:20.18 We invite You into our presence and thank You for getting us 00:01:20.18\00:01:23.71 through another week. 00:01:23.71\00:01:25.61 A lot of times we take that for granted, and I thank You that we're in the Sabbath so we can 00:01:25.78\00:01:29.75 worship You. Amen. [ "Whom Shall I Fear" plays ] 00:01:29.75\00:01:36.42 Sing with us. 00:02:10.23\00:02:12.39 [ "When Peace, Like a River" plays ] 00:05:54.58\00:05:58.92 >> Amen. Thank you. Thank you, guys. Beautiful. 00:16:16.30\00:16:21.11 What a prayer for today. Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help me stand. 00:16:21.11\00:16:31.05 Oh, God, we pray that prayer. Precious Lord, take our hands. Lead us on, help us stand. 00:16:31.05\00:16:42.13 In this hour of the storm, we have nothing to fear. So, with the few minutes we have 00:16:42.13\00:16:51.04 left, teach us. Through scripture, make it clear, 00:16:51.04\00:16:54.48 please. Hide me so that you get through to the max. We pray in 00:16:54.48\00:17:02.58 Jesus' name. Amen. So here's a question for you. Is the word "obey" a four-letter word? 00:17:02.58\00:17:14.56 Huh? Come on. "Dwight, I can count. O-B-E-Y." 00:17:14.56\00:17:22.77 Four-letter word. Yeah, but in American English -- Come on. 00:17:22.77\00:17:26.51 In American English, when you call something a four-letter 00:17:26.51\00:17:30.61 word... It's a cuss word. It's usually a profanity or an 00:17:30.61\00:17:34.35 obscenity. Is that not right? So is "obey" a bad four-letter 00:17:34.35\00:17:42.52 word? Let me rephrase it. 00:17:42.52\00:17:44.96 What is there about us humans that creates such a strong 00:17:45.13\00:17:49.53 aversion to this notion of having to obey somebody? 00:17:49.53\00:17:53.94 Obey anybody. I'm reading right now 00:17:53.94\00:17:58.97 Jacques Doukhan's brand-new -- I mean brand-new -- commentary 00:17:58.97\00:18:02.71 on the Book of Genesis. Whoa. 00:18:02.71\00:18:04.68 Every morning of this new year, every morning, every word in 00:18:04.68\00:18:08.12 Genesis, every word in the commentary, and I tell you what, 00:18:08.12\00:18:11.29 I find it absolutely embarrassing how quickly 00:18:11.29\00:18:17.36 we humans default, not to obedience but disobedience. 00:18:17.36\00:18:25.17 I mean, you have Adam and Eve. Brand-new parents of a not yet existing human race, and I don't 00:18:25.33\00:18:31.51 know how many hours go by, I don't know how many days. We have no sense of the time 00:18:31.51\00:18:37.08 passage, but Adam and Eve, on the stage of human life, when they are duped by this cunning 00:18:37.08\00:18:43.02 serpent into bold, defiant disobedience against their 00:18:43.02\00:18:50.56 maker. Soon as they're thrown out of the Garden, you got Cain 00:18:50.56\00:18:53.70 and Abel. Guess what? Second verse, same as the first. Two 00:18:53.70\00:19:01.24 brothers. One of them duped by the same rebel angel into a bold and defiant disobedience to his 00:19:01.24\00:19:11.25 maker. And, by the way, when Cain is banished -- 00:19:11.25\00:19:16.65 listen to this. When Cain is banished from that tiny little 00:19:16.65\00:19:22.96 community, even as mother and father are burying their boy beneath the ground... 00:19:22.96\00:19:31.53 And they are now childless... When Cain is banished, and Genesis records his lineage, 00:19:31.53\00:19:38.04 never again will the word "God" be associated or spoken or written in connection 00:19:38.04\00:19:44.48 with the line of Cain. High-handed disobedience. What is there about us humans 00:19:44.48\00:19:54.19 that creates this strong aversion to anybody, and I mean anybody, telling me what to do? 00:19:54.19\00:20:03.16 And then you come along to the very, very first king Israel has 00:20:03.16\00:20:08.37 ever had. We're talking about a tall, gentle, humble giant named Saul and he gets picked to be 00:20:08.37\00:20:14.08 the first king? I don't know how many days he's on the throne. 00:20:14.08\00:20:17.21 It may be a few weeks, it may be a few months. But before you 00:20:17.21\00:20:21.88 know it, that four-letter word "obey" is like a burr under his saddle. And he resists. 00:20:21.88\00:20:31.36 And one day, when he was waiting for the prophet Sammy to show up -- "Where is this guy when I 00:20:31.36\00:20:37.57 need him?" Suddenly, impetuous, impatient Saul decides he will 00:20:37.57\00:20:43.34 be priest and prophet, and he will go ahead with the sacrifices of Thanksgiving using 00:20:43.34\00:20:50.35 the animals he disobeyed God by keeping. 00:20:50.35\00:20:54.48 Animal blood is flowing everywhere when, at last, Samuel 00:20:54.65\00:20:59.02 shows up. And when the prophet shows us, 00:20:59.02\00:21:01.72 these words, on the screen for you, 1 Samuel 15. 00:21:01.72\00:21:05.93 But Samuel replied to Saul, "Does the Lord delight in burn 00:21:05.93\00:21:10.10 offerings and sacrifices as much as in -- here comes that 00:21:10.10\00:21:14.27 four-letter word -- as much as it obeying the Lord? 00:21:14.27\00:21:18.04 To obey, Saul -- To obey is better than sacrifice, and to 00:21:18.04\00:21:21.81 heed is better than the fat of rams." 00:21:21.81\00:21:24.61 Keep going. "For rebellion" -- 00:21:24.61\00:21:26.65 that would be disobedience. "For rebellion is like the sin 00:21:26.65\00:21:30.19 of divination and arrogance -- that would be pride -- is like 00:21:30.19\00:21:33.86 the evil of idolatry," the worship of self. 00:21:33.86\00:21:37.03 Disobedience. 00:21:37.03\00:21:39.33 Can you believe it? Satan has been dissing obedience from the 00:21:39.49\00:21:46.90 very beginning. And did you catch that? A huge clue to why we have this gut reaction to the 00:21:46.90\00:21:53.04 four-letter word "obey." It's because of another four-letter word that's spelled 00:21:53.04\00:21:56.44 like this -- S-E-L-F. The problem is not "obey." The 00:21:56.44\00:22:04.05 problem is "self." That's the problem. Don't nobody tell me what to do. Why don't we like to 00:22:04.05\00:22:11.09 obey? Because if you obey, it means you accept somebody else's authority over yourself. 00:22:11.09\00:22:15.36 You have to submit to somebody else whose position, whose prominence, whose power is 00:22:15.36\00:22:19.97 greater than your own, and you must submit, whether it's Mommy, 00:22:19.97\00:22:27.44 Daddy, or God. Maybe Bob Dylan was right. You know who Bob Dylan is? Come on, do you know 00:22:27.44\00:22:32.25 who Bob Dylan is? We're talking about the troubadour, the 00:22:32.25\00:22:36.58 prophet poet of the Baby Boomer generation. Maybe Bob Dylan was right when he composed this song 00:22:36.58\00:22:42.99 "You're Gonna Have to Serve Somebody." Mm-hmm, I went and looked it up. It's a long song. 00:22:42.99\00:22:49.36 I pulled a few lyrics out. It goes like this -- Here's one of 00:22:49.36\00:22:54.20 them I thought I was appropriate. ¤ You may be a preacher with your spiritual 00:22:54.20\00:22:58.44 pride ¤ ¤ You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side ¤ ¤ You may be workin' in a 00:22:58.44\00:23:03.04 barbershop ¤ ¤ You may know how to cut hair ¤ ¤ You may be 00:23:03.04\00:23:06.65 somebody's mistress ¤ ¤ May be somebody's heir ¤ ¤ But you're gonna have to serve 00:23:06.65\00:23:11.52 somebody, yes indeed ¤ ¤ You're gonna have to serve somebody ¤ 00:23:11.52\00:23:15.56 ¤ Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord ¤ ¤ But you're gonna have to serve 00:23:15.56\00:23:20.26 somebody ¤ Mm! I should have sung that for you! 00:23:20.26\00:23:23.97 [ Laughter ] I don't know it, I don't know it. 00:23:23.97\00:23:30.47 Please don't write me and tell me about that song. I don't know 00:23:30.47\00:23:35.18 it. "Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you're gonna have to serve 00:23:35.18\00:23:40.92 somebody." That's exactly the point Paul is making here in this classic chapter of Romans 00:23:40.92\00:23:46.42 6. Come on, find it. Romans 6, New Testament. Romans 6. 00:23:46.42\00:23:51.09 This is it. Bob Dylan is absolutely right. He must have 00:23:51.09\00:23:57.60 read Romans 6 to compose that one. Romans 6. If you didn't 00:23:57.60\00:24:02.64 bring a bible, grab the pew bible in front of you. It's page 00:24:02.64\00:24:06.44 760. Romans 6, let's pick it up in Verse 16. "You're gonna have 00:24:06.44\00:24:11.75 to serve somebody." That's Paul's point right now. 00:24:11.75\00:24:14.35 Oh, did I love that song that they were teaching us today. "No 00:24:23.09\00:24:29.60 longer a slave." The song is mostly right. Except for where it's wrong. And that is you'll 00:24:29.60\00:24:37.07 be a slave. You're gonna have to serve somebody. 00:24:37.24\00:24:39.14 You're gonna be a slave to somebody. 00:24:39.14\00:24:41.58 You just better decide which one you want to be a slave to. 00:24:41.58\00:24:46.31 Verse 16 again. "Don't you know that when you 00:24:46.31\00:24:48.55 offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves 00:24:48.55\00:24:50.69 of the one you obey." There's that four-letter word. 00:24:50.69\00:24:53.59 Verse 17. 00:24:56.56\00:24:58.46 One more verse. Verse 18. 00:25:07.64\00:25:09.54 Because you're gonna serve somebody. 00:25:16.08\00:25:19.05 It's just the question of "Whom shall I serve?" 00:25:19.05\00:25:22.68 Grab your study guide. We got to get this down before 00:25:22.68\00:25:25.65 we lose it. Jot it down. 00:25:25.65\00:25:27.26 You got your study guide in your worship bulletin? Okay. 00:25:27.26\00:25:30.36 If you didn't get it, hold your hand up. 00:25:30.36\00:25:31.99 Here come our friendly ushers. Just hold you hand up. 00:25:31.99\00:25:34.00 Up in the balcony, the same. All right. 00:25:34.00\00:25:35.56 Everybody gets a study guide. Didn't get one, hold your hand 00:25:35.56\00:25:37.87 up. We're glad you're here. 00:25:39.23\00:25:41.54 And, by the way, José and I just talked to you a moment ago on 00:25:41.54\00:25:44.27 live streaming. You know that we are now setting 00:25:44.27\00:25:46.47 out to build an online community. 00:25:46.47\00:25:48.11 We have people from all over the planet now that at this hour 00:25:48.11\00:25:50.81 Eastern Time are joining us. We're glad you're a part of 00:25:50.81\00:25:53.31 them. How to grow that community? 00:25:53.31\00:25:54.95 We've already talked to you about it. 00:25:54.95\00:25:56.72 Let's start talking back and forth to each other. 00:25:56.72\00:25:59.45 And if you're on Facebook Live, they're putting the little link 00:25:59.45\00:26:03.83 right now for you up there, and you can connect immediately to 00:26:03.83\00:26:06.43 the study guide. You're watching on television 00:26:06.43\00:26:08.40 right now. You see it on the screen. 00:26:08.40\00:26:11.07 www.newperceptions.tv You go there, and you're looking 00:26:11.07\00:26:14.50 for Storm. That's the title of this -- 00:26:14.50\00:26:16.34 "Storm: Finding Jesus in the Gathering Dark." 00:26:16.34\00:26:18.57 This is Part 4. There are only seven of these. 00:26:18.57\00:26:20.44 Three, and they're over. So go ahead and get that study 00:26:20.44\00:26:22.64 guide, you'll want this one. Okay, let's fill them out. 00:26:22.64\00:26:24.85 I didn't want you to miss this. First, the Samuel one. 00:26:24.85\00:26:26.98 So we're gonna go back to 1 Samuel, jot it down. 00:26:26.98\00:26:29.78 "To obey" -- that four-letter word. 00:26:29.78\00:26:32.25 "To obey is better than sacrifice," right? 00:26:32.25\00:26:35.09 By the way, you have devices. You can go to the same place 00:26:35.09\00:26:37.49 with your device. You can do it. 00:26:37.49\00:26:39.23 It's paperless. Paperless! "To obey is better than 00:26:39.23\00:26:42.10 sacrifice...for rebellion -- that would be disobedience -- 00:26:42.10\00:26:44.93 is like the sin of divination." That's connecting with Lucifer, 00:26:44.93\00:26:47.97 the dark art! Oh, he's the big "dis" of 00:26:47.97\00:26:50.61 obedience. "...and arrogance like the evil 00:26:50.61\00:26:53.74 of idolatry," which, of course, is the worship of self. 00:26:53.74\00:26:56.91 Keep going. "At the heart of our trouble 00:26:56.91\00:26:58.68 with the four-letter word "obey" is our trouble with the 00:26:58.68\00:27:01.08 four-letter word "self." We just made that point. 00:27:01.08\00:27:03.15 Write it down one more time. After all, doesn't "obey" mean 00:27:03.15\00:27:06.32 you must accept someone else's authority over your self? 00:27:06.32\00:27:09.32 Yep, that's exactly what it means, and sure enough, when we 00:27:09.32\00:27:12.49 turn to Romans 6, Paul makes that point. 00:27:12.49\00:27:14.73 Jot it down now. We just read these words. 00:27:14.73\00:27:17.10 "You are slaves of the one you obey, whether you are slaves to 00:27:17.10\00:27:20.40 sin, which leads to death, or slaves to obedience, which leads 00:27:20.40\00:27:23.71 to righteousness." You see? Jot it down. 00:27:23.71\00:27:26.07 Bob Dylan is absolutely right. "You're gonna have to serve 00:27:26.07\00:27:29.41 somebody," so pick your master carefully. 00:27:29.41\00:27:37.65 You got two choices. Pick 'em carefully. 00:27:37.65\00:27:39.95 "Yeah, but do I -- Come on, come on, come on, Dwight. 00:27:39.95\00:27:42.62 Who cares about this obeying or not? 00:27:42.62\00:27:44.56 I mean, what's the big deal?" You know that's a very pertinent 00:27:44.56\00:27:47.60 question. It deserves a very thoughtful 00:27:47.60\00:27:50.23 response. And you and I will kind of 00:27:50.23\00:27:52.60 conjure up the response together. 00:27:52.60\00:27:54.80 You remember last week, I had a coin here. 00:27:54.80\00:27:57.11 Were you here last week? You remember the coin? 00:27:57.11\00:27:59.74 We talked about a coin toss because at the Super Bowl, both 00:27:59.74\00:28:02.38 teams' captains will gather in the center of the field, the 00:28:02.38\00:28:04.91 referee will throw the coin up. Why are we talking about a coin? 00:28:04.91\00:28:07.68 Because a coin has how many sides? Three or two? 00:28:07.68\00:28:11.09 A coin can only have two sides. And so, last week, we 00:28:11.09\00:28:14.62 remembered -- Ahh! -- that the God of this universe, 00:28:14.62\00:28:17.49 when he minted in pure gold -- This is gold, by the way. 00:28:17.49\00:28:20.56 Last week we had silver, but now I got gold. 00:28:20.56\00:28:23.03 Well, I guess it's Fool's Gold, but it's still gold-ish. 00:28:23.03\00:28:26.70 When the God of the universe minted the exquisitely, most 00:28:26.70\00:28:30.74 expensive coin in the universe, and he called it salvation, 00:28:30.74\00:28:34.91 we found out that the coin has two sides. 00:28:34.91\00:28:36.68 The salvation coin has two sides. 00:28:36.68\00:28:38.18 Let me see if you were listening last week. 00:28:38.18\00:28:40.02 On one side of the coin, it's called...? 00:28:40.02\00:28:43.45 "We are in Christ." All right. Very good. 00:28:43.45\00:28:45.85 "We are in Christ." So I turn the coin over. 00:28:45.85\00:28:47.92 What's that side? "Christ is in us." 00:28:47.92\00:28:51.56 The entire coin of salvation can be summarized in just those two 00:28:51.56\00:28:55.13 sides. There's not a third side, 00:28:55.13\00:28:57.13 there's not a fourth side. Either we are in Christ 00:28:57.13\00:29:01.24 or Christ is in us. So when you think about 00:29:01.24\00:29:06.34 the coin of salvation... We remember the words of Jesus. 00:29:06.34\00:29:10.05 In fact, we looked at these last week. 00:29:10.05\00:29:11.88 I want you put them down again, please -- John 15:5, bright red 00:29:11.88\00:29:14.72 letters on the screen. Would you jot them down? 00:29:14.72\00:29:16.95 How do we know there are two sides to the coin? 00:29:16.95\00:29:19.15 Listen to this. Jesus says... 00:29:19.15\00:29:21.06 There are the two sides. You in Me, I in you... 00:29:25.63\00:29:31.83 God's entire gift of salvation summarized in two sides of the 00:29:32.00\00:29:36.94 salvation coin. There's not a third side. There are only two. Now, the moment -- the moment 00:29:36.94\00:29:42.21 you introduce this concept of abiding in another person and another person abiding in you, 00:29:42.21\00:29:47.82 you have injected a love story into the equation. This isn't 00:29:47.82\00:29:52.65 just vines and branches now. We're talking about a love 00:29:52.65\00:29:55.92 story. Because how would you ever let somebody abide in you if you're not in love with that 00:29:55.92\00:29:59.89 person? Why would somebody ever let you abide in her, abide in him if you're not in love with 00:29:59.89\00:30:03.73 that person? And when you're in love with that person, what 00:30:03.73\00:30:06.67 makes that person happy makes you happy. What makes that person sad, makes you sad. 00:30:06.67\00:30:09.87 When you abide in each other, it's just like life comes 00:30:09.87\00:30:12.81 together. A very good friend, a spouse... That's how it works. So, the other day, Karen came 00:30:12.81\00:30:20.55 home from her shopping -- one of her shopping expeditions. And she comes home with a 00:30:20.55\00:30:29.62 replacement for our clothes hamper. You know what a clothes 00:30:29.62\00:30:33.36 hamper is? When they're dirty, you throw them in the hamper. 00:30:33.36\00:30:36.46 That old hamper, finally the bottom gave out. A lot of dirty 00:30:36.46\00:30:40.60 clothes in our family. I don't understand that. Two people in 00:30:40.60\00:30:42.94 the family and we've got a lot of dirty clothes. It's not 00:30:42.94\00:30:45.77 right. But, anyway, so she comes home. Oh, boy, she's prepared. She doesn't come home with an 00:30:45.77\00:30:49.71 exact replacement. Are you kidding? She comes home with a 00:30:49.71\00:30:52.51 super-duper big hamper. With one very annoying feature that she thinks is very cool. 00:30:52.51\00:31:03.56 And that is, if you open the hamper up, there are two nets hanging inside of it. 00:31:03.56\00:31:08.80 Mm-hmm. Net bags. They're hung up by Velcro. When she brought 00:31:08.80\00:31:13.57 it home, she says, "Come here, Dwight. I want to give you a little free tutorial." 00:31:13.57\00:31:17.11 [ Laughter ] I love these 'cause they're never free. 00:31:17.11\00:31:20.81 "I'm gonna give you a free tutorial." She says, "Now, look 00:31:20.81\00:31:24.45 here. This one, lights. This one, darks. All right? 00:31:24.45\00:31:31.19 When you take them off... Lights. Darks. Is that clear? I said, "Yeah. Sort of." 00:31:31.19\00:31:40.16 And in a few days, I found out, what do you when they're not 00:31:40.16\00:31:44.67 light or dark? Leave them outside? Third pile. Oh, no. You 00:31:44.67\00:31:52.34 got to decide. You got to serve somebody. So, anyway... You know, I'm used to dumping 00:31:52.34\00:32:00.68 everything in one big hole. Just -- Practicing my Chicago Bulls 00:32:00.68\00:32:06.09 hook shot. Now I got these two holes I got to hit. 00:32:06.09\00:32:10.09 And there are times -- I'll tell you the truth. There are times 00:32:10.09\00:32:13.56 when my wadded-up sock goes in the wrong net. Bad. I say, "You 00:32:13.56\00:32:19.77 know what? Who cares? Who cares?" And just like that -- I 00:32:19.77\00:32:25.54 tell you the truth -- just like that, there's a little voice inside of me that whispers, 00:32:25.54\00:32:31.45 "But, Dwight, Karen cares. And this makes her work a lot 00:32:31.45\00:32:37.35 easier. So if she's asked you to do this, do it, boy." Jesus comes along and he says, 00:32:37.35\00:32:44.53 "Hey, hey! Yo, yo! Abide in me, I in you. Hey, Dwight! 00:32:44.53\00:32:49.90 You're the one that went to the door and opened it up when I was knocking on the door and you 00:32:49.90\00:32:54.07 said, 'Come on in, Jesus. You have my life!' I came in. 00:32:54.07\00:32:57.64 Thank you for inviting me in. 00:32:57.64\00:33:01.08 We're together now. And, Dwight, you do know that 00:33:01.24\00:33:04.35 when I came in, I began to clean up what I found. 00:33:04.35\00:33:08.25 The dirt just went away. And, Dwight, you do know that 00:33:08.25\00:33:12.99 when I came in and I said, 'Dwight, that'll need to leave,' 00:33:12.99\00:33:16.12 I let you take it out." Oh, yes, Lord, I remember. 00:33:16.12\00:33:19.79 You did let met take it out. "Yeah, you know why, Dwight? 00:33:19.79\00:33:23.37 Because I am in you and you are in me. 00:33:23.37\00:33:25.57 And when we're close like this, what makes you happy 00:33:25.57\00:33:29.74 makes me happy. And the other side of the coin 00:33:29.74\00:33:33.04 is what makes me happy, makes you happy. 00:33:33.04\00:33:36.14 Abide in me, stay in me. Anything I command you. 00:33:36.14\00:33:40.92 It's good news because we're like this. 00:33:40.92\00:33:43.12 I remind you, Dwight, I didn't just come in as your protector. 00:33:43.12\00:33:46.42 I didn't just come in as your defender. 00:33:46.42\00:33:48.62 No, no, no, no. I'm your BFF, your Best Friend 00:33:48.62\00:33:51.76 Forever, I am your savior." Yeah. 00:33:51.76\00:33:58.73 Wow. "And, by the way, Dwight, now 00:33:58.73\00:34:02.74 that I'm in, I kind of hope that you live by the words of 00:34:02.74\00:34:06.64 John 14:15. "To quote me," he says... 00:34:06.64\00:34:11.61 I hope you live by those words. Well, now, you got me curious, 00:34:11.61\00:34:14.62 Lord. I got to check that out. 00:34:14.62\00:34:15.85 John 14:15. Check it out in your bible. 00:34:15.85\00:34:18.22 See if it feels the same way in yours as it does it mine. 00:34:18.22\00:34:21.86 John 14 -- Okay, I see it's all red letters, so Jesus must -- 00:34:21.86\00:34:25.19 Oh, this is Jesus the night before he goes to Calvary. 00:34:25.19\00:34:28.76 This is obviously something very important on his heart. 00:34:28.76\00:34:31.33 That night, sure enough. John 14:15. Here's Jesus. 00:34:31.33\00:34:34.77 Red letters. 00:34:34.77\00:34:37.67 Keep my commandments. Would you jot that down, please? 00:34:41.98\00:34:48.62 What's the word "keep" mean? It means obey! 00:34:48.62\00:34:50.45 It's another four-letter word for "obey." 00:34:50.45\00:34:52.59 Keep my commandments. Because that's the gospel truth! 00:34:52.59\00:34:56.96 Loving and obeying go hand in hand because if you love someone, no matter who it is, 00:34:57.13\00:35:01.33 you demonstrate your love by obeying her, by obeying him. It's just that way, folks. 00:35:01.33\00:35:05.53 You don't like it, find another planet. It's the way we live. 00:35:05.53\00:35:11.97 Wow. "Yeah, but, Dwight, aren't you making this -- 00:35:11.97\00:35:16.68 Hey, guys, I don't know what you did up there, but you just suddenly have this really amped 00:35:16.68\00:35:21.12 up. Do you mind turning it down just a little? Thanks. 00:35:21.12\00:35:23.32 It's just we're getting all kinds of crazy sounds now. All 00:35:23.32\00:35:27.12 right. "Yeah, but, Dwight, come on. Aren't you making this "obey" business a little too 00:35:27.12\00:35:31.49 simple? I mean, you know, love, relationship, and all?" I don't 00:35:31.49\00:35:35.66 think so. Because as is turns out, the great truth is -- obedience is by faith. 00:35:35.66\00:35:41.64 Did you know that? Obedience is by faith. 00:35:41.80\00:35:44.51 Jot it down, will you? Just keep scribblin' there. 00:35:44.51\00:35:47.31 There it is. 00:35:47.31\00:35:49.21 You say, "Oh, Dwight, you made that up." No. 00:35:55.38\00:35:57.49 Everything up there in yellow, would you write that down? 00:35:57.49\00:35:59.95 Because this came to me after I wrote up the study guide, but I 00:35:59.95\00:36:03.06 need you to write Hebrews 11:8 down because what does it say? 00:36:03.06\00:36:08.73 By faith. Obedience is by faith. It's not something you grit, 00:36:08.73\00:36:13.47 it's not something you grunt. 00:36:13.47\00:36:15.37 It's not something you grin. It's something you do by faith. By faith, Abraham obeyed God. 00:36:15.54\00:36:21.81 And, by the way, that's exactly how Jesus lived. He obeyed by 00:36:21.81\00:36:33.05 faith. I'm gonna share that line with you again. Whew. 00:36:33.05\00:36:36.86 For some reason -- I'm telling you the truth -- this line has gotten embedded in my mind 00:36:36.86\00:36:41.30 through this Storm series. I know we quoted it in #RxF4Now last semester, but this is 00:36:41.30\00:36:46.27 really -- It just took this series for it to get into my mind, and I have to remind you, 00:36:46.27\00:36:51.74 again, that when the preacher preaches, he is preaching loudest to himself. 00:36:51.74\00:36:57.35 She is preaching loudest to herself. Why? Because I'm 00:36:57.35\00:37:01.48 listening to everything I'm saying and I'm saying, "Is that authentic?" Have I integrated 00:37:01.48\00:37:06.35 that into my own life?" And so I'm telling you, this line has been popping into my 00:37:06.35\00:37:10.83 brain all day long, all through my waking hours. Now, I'm not -- 00:37:10.83\00:37:14.40 This is nothing great about Dwight. I'm telling you the 00:37:14.40\00:37:17.93 truth. But in my humble opinion, here's what's going on. The Holy Spirit has put Himself 00:37:17.93\00:37:23.94 behind this line and pushes it in a way he pushes no other 00:37:23.94\00:37:33.05 line. It's the secret to Jesus. And if you get this secret 24/7, you will have the faith of 00:37:33.05\00:37:42.39 Jesus, and when you have the faith of Jesus, you will have the obedience of Jesus. 00:37:42.39\00:37:46.66 It's the secret wrapped up in a single line. I never saw it 00:37:46.66\00:37:51.23 before. But now it's just like, "Whoa." I got to share it with you. The Book of Hebrews. 00:37:51.23\00:37:55.20 Got to Hebrews, near the end of the New Testament there. Hebrews 00:37:55.20\00:37:58.71 2. It's very interesting what the author of Hebrews does. He puts words in Christ's mouth 00:37:58.71\00:38:03.41 that the gospels do not. Because in Hebrews, the incarnate God's 00:38:03.41\00:38:07.28 thought processes are revealed to us. The gospels do not reveal the thought processes. 00:38:07.28\00:38:11.09 They just tell what he spoke. But in Hebrews, we see what he's thinking as he spoke. 00:38:11.09\00:38:16.62 And this is dynamite. You'll find it all the way through the 00:38:16.62\00:38:19.93 book of Hebrews, little statements that Jesus makes that we never read anywhere else. 00:38:19.93\00:38:24.10 This is Hebrews -- I want you to know that Jesus is 00:38:24.27\00:38:26.84 gonna speak this line, so I need you to start with Verse 11, 00:38:26.84\00:38:29.24 where Hebrews 2 reads... 00:38:29.24\00:38:33.34 He's talking about Jesus. Who makes us holy? Jesus does. 00:38:40.45\00:38:43.28 So the one that makes us holy, and you and me, we're all the 00:38:43.28\00:38:46.59 same family, and that's why the line goes on... 00:38:46.59\00:38:49.59 "Yo, little brother! Yo, little sister!" 00:38:51.79\00:38:54.36 That's who He is. He's our elder brother. 00:38:54.36\00:38:57.03 Now, he says -- You won't find these words anywhere in the 00:38:57.03\00:38:59.53 gospels. He says, the incarnate God... 00:38:59.53\00:39:02.74 That's straight out of Psalm 22 and we know it's a messianic 00:39:06.41\00:39:09.18 psalm. "My God, my God, why have you 00:39:09.18\00:39:10.95 forsaken me?" are the opening words. 00:39:10.95\00:39:12.88 So we know this is Jesus, all right? 00:39:12.88\00:39:15.58 So he says... 00:39:15.58\00:39:17.49 One line. Seven words. Those seven words turn out to be 00:39:27.50\00:39:33.37 the credo of Christ. From birth to ascension. 00:39:33.37\00:39:39.27 "I will put my trust in Him." Wow. You know what? 00:39:39.27\00:39:46.28 I get tears in my eyes -- when in a quiet place, not here -- 00:39:46.28\00:39:49.95 but in a quiet place, I turn and I read those words, and it's as 00:39:49.95\00:39:53.82 if Jesus is speaking. And what I realized is, He has 00:39:53.82\00:39:58.56 just given me a sentence that I can speak for the rest of my 00:39:58.56\00:40:02.43 life. And I am speaking His thoughts 00:40:02.43\00:40:07.00 when I speak this sentence. Seven words long. 00:40:07.00\00:40:11.87 Jesus said "Hey, yo, yo, Dwight, Dwight, Dwight... 00:40:11.87\00:40:14.64 This is the way I lived when I was here." 00:40:14.64\00:40:17.08 No kidding! This is the one confession that 00:40:17.08\00:40:19.38 carried me through night and day. 00:40:19.38\00:40:21.25 I kept whispering to myself, "I will put my trust in Him." 00:40:21.25\00:40:24.19 "I will put my trust in Him." Three times the enemy of the 00:40:24.19\00:40:27.62 human race came to me, and all three responses were summarized, 00:40:27.62\00:40:31.76 "I will put my trust in Him." That's how I made it. 00:40:31.76\00:40:36.10 That's my line. And I'm giving it to you to be 00:40:36.10\00:40:40.14 your credo, too. "I will put my trust in Him." 00:40:40.14\00:40:44.51 Come on, little brother. Come on, my little brother. 00:40:44.51\00:40:47.94 I need you to take hold of this faith because, you see, when you 00:40:47.94\00:40:53.05 speak those seven words, you have just possessed the faith of 00:40:53.05\00:40:56.22 Jesus. That's the faith of Jesus." 00:40:56.22\00:40:58.32 "I will put my trust in Him." "And when I give you the faith 00:40:58.32\00:41:03.02 of Jesus, you do like I did with the tempter. 00:41:03.02\00:41:05.66 When he comes to you, Dwight, you say those seven words to 00:41:05.66\00:41:08.00 him." "I will put my trust in Him." 00:41:08.00\00:41:10.43 "So how could I do this great wickedness and sin against God? 00:41:10.43\00:41:13.57 Recognize those words, Dwight? I gave those words to Joseph. 00:41:13.57\00:41:16.67 He was saying "I will put my trust in Him." 00:41:16.67\00:41:19.14 And then when Mrs. Potiphar was standing in front of him, he 00:41:19.14\00:41:22.04 said, "How can I do this wickedness and sin against God?" 00:41:22.04\00:41:24.85 I gave him my faith. He had the faith of Jesus. 00:41:24.85\00:41:27.98 You may have that same faith. You may live by the faith till I 00:41:27.98\00:41:32.05 come. Because if you have my faith, 00:41:32.05\00:41:34.92 you have my obedience, and if you have my obedience, you have 00:41:34.92\00:41:38.03 my victory. Do you understand that?" 00:41:38.03\00:41:41.56 Wow, Jesus. Are you serious? "I'm serious." 00:41:41.56\00:41:46.17 "I will put my trust in Him." Live by it. 00:41:46.17\00:41:50.64 I wish you'd jot that down. That's exactly what it is. 00:41:50.64\00:41:56.98 Which means you have that faith of Jesus, you have the obedience 00:41:56.98\00:42:01.22 of Jesus, too. And, oh my, speaking of 00:42:01.22\00:42:03.92 obedience, did He learn how to obey. 00:42:03.92\00:42:06.49 Merci. "Thank you" in Tagalog. 00:42:06.49\00:42:09.39 Beautiful language. Reading that. 00:42:09.39\00:42:11.63 Hebrews 5. Just turn the page. We'll go to the words. 00:42:11.63\00:42:15.53 We just heard in Tagalog and read in English -- 00:42:15.53\00:42:17.97 Hebrews 5. Turn the page. Look at this. 00:42:17.97\00:42:20.87 This is something else. Verse 7. 00:42:20.87\00:42:24.17 Too long words for one codeword. Because of his obedience. 00:42:39.09\00:42:43.36 There's that four-letter word again. 00:42:43.36\00:42:47.03 Not clear? It'll be clear in a split second. 00:42:47.03\00:42:50.60 That's the result of Jesus' confession. 00:42:50.60\00:42:52.90 And, by the way, before the great "By faith" chapter, 00:42:52.90\00:42:57.27 Hebrews 11. Before they ever talk about the 00:42:57.27\00:43:00.38 faith of humanity, in Hebrews 2, it's quickly established. 00:43:00.38\00:43:03.98 It's the faith of Jesus that counts. 00:43:03.98\00:43:07.08 By faith, Abraham obeyed, but where'd he get the faith from? 00:43:07.08\00:43:10.02 He got the faith from one who would come down and live that 00:43:10.02\00:43:13.79 way. Mm. 00:43:13.79\00:43:16.42 And, by the way, did you notice this? 00:43:16.42\00:43:19.49 That their loud cries and tears -- did you catch that? 00:43:19.49\00:43:21.66 Loud cries and tears. Let me tell you something. 00:43:21.66\00:43:23.63 When you live by the faith of Jesus, don't be fooled. 00:43:23.63\00:43:25.80 Don't be fooled into thinking that it's a picnic in the park 00:43:25.80\00:43:28.57 in the land of Satan. There is no picnic in the land 00:43:28.57\00:43:30.94 of Satan. You live in the land of Satan. 00:43:30.94\00:43:33.81 We all do. It's no little breezeway. 00:43:33.81\00:43:39.41 The stronger you hold on to God, the harder the devil will hit 00:43:39.41\00:43:44.25 you with everything he's got because in the enemy's land, it 00:43:44.25\00:43:48.39 is inevitable -- this is basketball season, we got a few 00:43:48.39\00:43:51.83 teams on the campus right now. It is inevitable that it is a 00:43:51.83\00:43:56.40 full-court press. The moment you seize the faith 00:43:56.40\00:43:59.83 of Jesus, it's a full-court press because there's somebody 00:43:59.83\00:44:03.14 that's gonna break -- He's gonna break your knuckles. 00:44:03.14\00:44:05.44 He's gonna crush that grass. That's his goal. 00:44:05.44\00:44:09.88 Because with the faith of Jesus, you win. 00:44:09.88\00:44:11.71 You got his obedience and you have his victory when you have 00:44:11.71\00:44:14.25 his faith. So hang on to the faith. 00:44:14.25\00:44:17.35 That's the point. Oh, F.F. Bruce. 00:44:17.35\00:44:21.42 Boy, does he nail it here, the great New Testament scholar. 00:44:21.42\00:44:25.39 Or as they say in the world of athletics, "No pain, no gain." 00:44:33.77\00:44:37.74 if you're not paining, you're not gaining. 00:44:37.74\00:44:40.18 You're just whimping. You want gain? 00:44:40.18\00:44:43.78 Then you have pain. You work out till it's killing 00:44:43.78\00:44:46.68 you. Jesus suffered in order to 00:44:46.68\00:44:50.32 learn. To learn what? 00:44:50.32\00:44:51.65 Well, take a look at this. Verse 7 again. 00:44:51.65\00:44:54.89 Keep reading. Verse 8. 00:45:03.06\00:45:04.97 Hold it right there. Would you write that in, please? 00:45:08.80\00:45:15.64 Hey, wait a minute. Do you suppose that's the way we 00:45:15.64\00:45:18.28 learn, as well? Do we learn the same way? 00:45:18.28\00:45:20.98 I have a feeling we do. I haven't seen my brother's palm 00:45:20.98\00:45:26.76 in a while. I should have looked it when we 00:45:26.76\00:45:28.86 were burying our mother with our sister Carrie just a few weeks 00:45:28.86\00:45:31.76 ago. But when Greg and I were growing 00:45:31.76\00:45:35.66 up in Japan, we were in a little house where the oil furnace was 00:45:35.66\00:45:39.70 underneath the floor, all right? And it would just -- 00:45:39.70\00:45:42.80 They don't have, you know, central air. 00:45:42.80\00:45:44.81 It just forced air from one hole that covers the whole house. 00:45:44.81\00:45:47.78 There was a metal grate over where the hot air came up. 00:45:47.78\00:45:52.98 And our parents warned us. "Boys, never touch that when the 00:45:52.98\00:45:56.82 furnace is on. Don't touch it." 00:45:56.82\00:45:58.82 I don't know what was happening one day. 00:45:58.82\00:46:01.02 We were playing around, and Greg was maybe scrambling for a ball 00:46:01.02\00:46:04.26 and he puts his hand down on that metal grate and there 00:46:04.26\00:46:07.03 was -- [ Hisses ] And a scream! 00:46:07.03\00:46:11.40 And a lesson learned. Because that's the way we learn. 00:46:11.40\00:46:16.97 No pain, no gain. F.F. Bruce goes on... 00:46:16.97\00:46:22.31 He learned what it would be like for you and me. He learned it. 00:46:39.19\00:46:43.43 "I will put my trust in Him" with loud cries and tears so 00:46:43.43\00:46:46.87 that by having the faith of Jesus, we will be granted the 00:46:46.87\00:46:50.17 obedience of Jesus. Oh! I got to end this. Verse 8. 00:46:50.17\00:46:55.51 Oh, here it comes. Verse 9. Get this. 00:46:57.81\00:47:06.55 Four-letter word. "You want eternal life? 00:47:06.55\00:47:11.39 Then abide in me, and I in you. And what I say, you do. 00:47:11.39\00:47:16.67 Not because I hate you, not because I'm a grump, not because 00:47:16.67\00:47:20.40 I like to see you squirm. What I say, you do because I'm 00:47:20.40\00:47:24.41 saving you. I'm protecting you. 00:47:24.41\00:47:28.44 That tempter is being held at bay because of this. 00:47:28.44\00:47:32.38 Do as I do. Say as I say." "I will put my trust in Him." 00:47:32.38\00:47:39.49 Seven-word credo. How shall we obey Him? 00:47:39.49\00:47:41.72 That's how. We obey Him by faith. 00:47:41.72\00:47:43.43 By whose faith? By the faith of Jesus. 00:47:43.43\00:47:46.06 So that when the tempter comes to us -- come on -- as he does 00:47:46.06\00:47:49.03 100 times a day... When the tempter comes to us... 00:47:49.03\00:47:54.87 We learn to live by the faith of Jesus and we declare to our 00:47:54.87\00:47:57.84 mortal enemy, "No, I will not, for I will put my trust in Him." 00:47:57.84\00:48:05.85 And, remember, God's word quoted back to Him is just as 00:48:05.85\00:48:08.62 omnipotent as when God speaks it. 00:48:08.62\00:48:10.45 So that when you speak the words "trust," "Him," 00:48:10.45\00:48:15.76 the moment they're off of your lips, the words instantly create 00:48:15.76\00:48:20.16 the reality they describe, and you have trust in Him. 00:48:20.16\00:48:23.90 I've seen it in the last four weeks. 00:48:23.90\00:48:29.30 It works. That sentence becomes 00:48:29.30\00:48:33.88 operationalized in your very being in the presence of the 00:48:33.88\00:48:38.41 tempter. Wow. The faith of Jesus. 00:48:38.41\00:48:43.52 "Yeah, but, Dwight, Dwight, Dwight, what if I'm tempted to 00:48:43.52\00:48:46.02 eat something I shouldn't eat? What if I'm tempted to drink 00:48:46.02\00:48:48.52 something I shouldn't drink? What if I'm tempted to do 00:48:48.52\00:48:50.89 something I shouldn't do? What if I'm hungry for sex, and 00:48:50.89\00:48:54.13 the tempter stands in front of me and he says, 00:48:54.13\00:48:57.00 'Indulge yourself. You've been going so long.' 00:48:57.00\00:49:04.07 What do I do then?" My friend, you call on the faith 00:49:04.07\00:49:07.64 of Jesus, that's what you do. "Yeah, but what's that mean?" 00:49:07.64\00:49:10.71 Repeat after me. "I will put my trust in Him." 00:49:10.71\00:49:14.35 In fact, let's do that out loud. Maybe you haven't gotten the 00:49:14.35\00:49:16.55 sentence yet. "I will put my trust in Him." 00:49:16.55\00:49:20.99 Let's do that again. "I will put my trust in Him." 00:49:20.99\00:49:25.99 One more time. "I will put my trust in Him." 00:49:25.99\00:49:31.07 And then immediately leave. Immediately leave. 00:49:31.07\00:49:37.77 Physically take your body away. Whatever it is, wherever it is. 00:49:37.77\00:49:42.01 "Yeah, but what if the devil keeps chasing me?" 00:49:42.01\00:49:45.05 Then you just keep saying to him "You might not have heard it the 00:49:45.05\00:49:47.92 first time, so let me repeat. I will put my trust in Him." 00:49:47.92\00:49:56.49 I remind you, that when Jesus went to Calvary with that 00:49:56.49\00:50:00.86 confession of faith and he's praying in the black darkness as 00:50:00.86\00:50:05.63 the forces of Satan himself come down to extinguish his life, 00:50:05.63\00:50:10.41 he clings to that line -- "I will put my trust in Him." 00:50:10.41\00:50:17.31 And because he does, the bloody, crimson obedience 00:50:17.31\00:50:22.92 that he won became the triumphant victory that he 00:50:22.92\00:50:29.16 gives. It's yours. 00:50:29.16\00:50:32.26 "It is finished! I got it for Dwight! 00:50:32.26\00:50:35.10 I got it for you. I got it." 00:50:35.10\00:50:39.43 The faith of Jesus. You get his obedience, you get 00:50:39.43\00:50:42.37 his victory. I'm telling you, ladies and 00:50:42.37\00:50:44.44 gentlemen, it doesn't get any better than this. 00:50:44.44\00:50:46.81 I want to end with a quotation from Desire of Ages. 00:50:46.81\00:50:48.71 I love this. Oh, this is stunning. 00:50:48.71\00:50:51.45 Oh, by the way, that's Christ in us. 00:50:58.55\00:51:00.89 He's identifying with my thoughts. 00:51:00.89\00:51:02.56 Isn't that amazing? Christ in us. 00:51:02.56\00:51:04.59 He said, "I'll take your thought, that's me." 00:51:04.59\00:51:08.10 You see how that works? It's just mutual. 00:51:14.30\00:51:17.51 Here it comes... 00:51:17.51\00:51:19.91 You're not even thinking! You are living by this. "I will put 00:51:27.02\00:51:31.02 my trust in Him." And when the moment comes, you're not saying, "Now, let's see, what is that 00:51:31.02\00:51:34.96 word again? Does the "put" come before the "trust," or the -- 00:51:34.96\00:51:37.96 No! You're not even thinking now. Because you have given that 00:51:37.96\00:51:42.53 day to Jesus. "I will put my trust in Him." And when you make a decision, you think it's your 00:51:42.53\00:51:47.50 decision. You think it's your decision, but the one who is abiding in you actually made 00:51:47.50\00:51:52.31 that decision for you. It will be as if we are carrying out our 00:51:52.31\00:51:56.01 own impulses. I'm not thinking about Jesus who just made this decision. He says, "No, Dwight, 00:51:56.01\00:51:59.78 you did. But it's because we're this. That's why you made the decision I would have made. 00:51:59.78\00:52:05.39 Good on you, boy. Little brother, stay with me. Stay with me, little brother." 00:52:05.39\00:52:11.93 Isn't that something? Wow. 00:52:11.93\00:52:15.56 Oh, can you believe this? 00:52:23.00\00:52:26.21 By faith. Not gruntin', grittin', and 00:52:29.18\00:52:31.98 grinnin'. Nope. By faith. 00:52:31.98\00:52:34.92 Continual. 00:52:34.92\00:52:37.49 This whole truth is saturated with Him. 00:52:40.69\00:52:44.53 That was last week's big idea. Every day, ask for the faith of 00:52:47.86\00:52:51.37 Jesus while you read the Word of God. 00:52:51.37\00:52:53.37 Every day, ask for the faith of Jesus while you read the 00:52:53.37\00:52:56.27 Word of God. Through communion with Him. 00:52:56.27\00:52:59.61 That's it. Sin will become -- 00:52:59.61\00:53:01.84 Read that next word to me. Read that next word to me. 00:53:01.84\00:53:04.18 Sin will become... Hateful! 00:53:04.18\00:53:07.82 Hateful to us. It's not about "Oh, man! No!" 00:53:07.82\00:53:12.29 No way! Sin will become hateful. 00:53:12.29\00:53:14.96 Isn't that something? And it's all because he's 00:53:14.96\00:53:17.16 abiding in you and you're abiding in him, and it's all by 00:53:17.16\00:53:19.76 faith. You get it all by faith. 00:53:19.76\00:53:21.56 Ladies and gentlemen, you see, the truth remains. 00:53:21.56\00:53:25.23 It is Jesus from beginning to end. 00:53:25.23\00:53:29.17 It's all Jesus. Jesus' faith, Jesus' obedience, 00:53:29.17\00:53:33.51 Jesus' victory. It's all Jesus. 00:53:33.51\00:53:35.61 It's all by faith. And listen, listen. 00:53:35.61\00:53:38.11 It's all yours to which I want to say "Amen." 00:53:38.11\00:53:42.32 It's all yours. It's all yours. 00:53:42.32\00:53:46.59 Right now. Amen. 00:53:46.59\00:53:50.46 Oh, God. Trust and obey. That's it. 00:53:50.46\00:53:53.73 The faith of Jesus leads to obedience of Jesus, leads to the 00:53:53.73\00:53:57.83 victory of Jesus, leads to eternity with Jesus. 00:53:57.83\00:54:01.24 Could it be more simple? And could it be more Christ in 00:54:01.24\00:54:05.54 the middle of it all than what we've just discovered? 00:54:05.54\00:54:09.18 "I will put my trust in Him." Please. Dear God. 00:54:09.18\00:54:16.45 Insert that seven-word credo all through the day and night 00:54:16.45\00:54:22.19 for all of us. We humbly pray in Jesus' name. 00:54:22.19\00:54:26.53 Amen. All right, let's sing that 00:54:26.53\00:54:29.36 beautiful, beautiful gospel, "Trust and Obey." 00:54:29.36\00:54:33.03 ¤¤ 00:54:33.20\00:54:38.11 >> Now may the God of Peace, who through the blood of the eternal 00:56:28.12\00:56:31.12 covenant brought back from the dead, our Lord, Jesus, that 00:56:31.12\00:56:34.36 great shepherd of the sheep.
