Nice to see all of you 00:08:27.07\00:08:30.37 here. Yep, it's the last Sabbath of January already. But I'm so glad that you're out 00:08:30.37\00:08:36.88 here. Nice to see you. You look great. 00:08:36.88\00:08:38.95 All right. So, one of my favorite story scouts, she found 00:08:38.95\00:08:47.06 this story. Happened Monday. So we're talking pretty fresh. Happened north of Lake Tahoe in 00:08:47.06\00:08:51.73 California. So it's winter there, like it's winter here. 00:08:51.73\00:08:55.86 And two boys -- Let's see -- Dean Ortiz and Neale Shutler, are driving, 12:15 in the 00:08:55.86\00:09:03.00 morning. So that's Monday morning. Very early. 00:09:03.00\00:09:05.44 Pitch black outside, and it's snowing, did I mention? They're on Highway 89 north of 00:09:05.44\00:09:10.88 Lake Tahoe, when all of a sudden, there is what's called a 00:09:10.88\00:09:15.68 whiteout. Do you know what a whiteout is? You're driving down the road, and that snow just 00:09:15.68\00:09:20.26 kind of goes -- Pshew! -- and the headlights are piercing. You 00:09:20.26\00:09:23.39 can't see. You can't see a thing. David is driving. He's slowing the car down 00:09:23.39\00:09:26.23 slower, slower, slower, because you don't know where you're 00:09:26.23\00:09:29.53 going. When all of a sudden, it cleared, and he hit a bump. It was a bump of snow in the 00:09:29.53\00:09:34.00 middle of the road. And before they could adjust to that bump of snow, before they 00:09:34.00\00:09:39.54 could even move and think, up the mountain, 200 feet up, comes a wall of snow 12 feet tall. 00:09:39.54\00:09:48.98 And that wall of snow comes down faster, faster, faster, comes to the road and where that little 00:09:48.98\00:09:53.39 car -- where David and Neale are in, when that little car looks up -- Boom! -- under 12 feet of 00:09:53.39\00:10:02.20 snow. Can you believe that? "Hey, hey. 00:10:02.20\00:10:06.23 What happened? What happened? What happened? Hey, Neale, can 00:10:06.23\00:10:08.57 you see anything?" "No, I can't. Look out the window." 00:10:08.57\00:10:10.84 "I can't see anything. Look out your window." "I can't see 00:10:10.84\00:10:14.21 anything, either." You know why? They're under the snow. "[ Gasps ] What are we gonna do? 00:10:14.21\00:10:21.22 Nobody knows we're here. Do you got your cellphone?" "Yes, I 00:10:21.22\00:10:23.99 do." "Pull it out." "Okay." "Do you have any bars?" 00:10:23.99\00:10:26.45 "Ooh, not very many bars." "Well, we better decide what we 00:10:26.45\00:10:34.03 should do. And let's just do what the right thing would be." 00:10:34.03\00:10:38.27 So they did. And let's see a picture of them. They did a selfie in the snow underneath. 00:10:38.27\00:10:44.57 There are the windows covered with snow, every direction. "Well, we might as well get this 00:10:44.57\00:10:49.51 on Facebook if this is it." Can you believe that? And with the 00:10:49.51\00:10:54.55 next breath, they dialed -- What numbers did they dial? -- 911. 00:10:54.55\00:10:58.05 They got ahold of the North Tahoe Fire Department. Took them less than an hour for the 00:10:58.05\00:11:02.96 paramedics to come. And when the paramedics arrived, here's the picture the paramedics saw 00:11:02.96\00:11:07.50 before the car was dug out. That's with the car dug out. 00:11:07.50\00:11:10.97 Under that snow. And next picture, please. There's the big hole where the car has gone in. 00:11:10.97\00:11:16.47 Ooh, my, my, my. Oh, I tell you what, boys and girls, some days 00:11:16.47\00:11:23.98 are good days, and some aren't so good. Some nights, the same. But listen, listen, listen. 00:11:23.98\00:11:29.32 When Jesus is your Savior and your forever friend, it doesn't matter, good day, bad night -- 00:11:29.32\00:11:37.56 It doesn't matter. He is always with us anywhere, any time. 00:11:37.56\00:11:43.47 Jesus says, "Abide in me, and I in you. And I'm with you 00:11:43.47\00:11:48.50 always." What a friend. How many are thankful that Jesus is with 00:11:48.50\00:11:52.24 us always? Even under 12 feet of snow, he is still with us. Life feels like it's crashing in 00:11:52.24\00:11:57.71 sometimes, he is still with us. Would somebody like to thank Jesus for always being with us? 00:11:57.71\00:12:06.42 Sissy, I saw your hand first. You come on up here. He'll have a coin, not unlike 00:20:07.57\00:20:11.54 this. It'll actually be a 00:20:11.54\00:20:13.14 commemorative coin. This is a silver dollar. 00:20:13.14\00:20:15.14 He'll say, "All right, gentlemen, come here, come here, 00:20:15.14\00:20:17.58 come here. This is heads. 00:20:17.58\00:20:20.32 This is tails. 00:20:20.32\00:20:23.12 I want the visiting team to make the call." Well, who's visiting? 00:20:23.28\00:20:26.59 Everybody's visiting. It's the team with the worst record of 00:20:26.59\00:20:30.23 the two. "You make the call." So he'll take that coin, and he 00:20:30.23\00:20:34.76 will flip it up. Only he won't catch it. It goes to the turf. Stoops over, picks it up. 00:20:34.76\00:20:39.93 Voilą. Here's the result. Interestingly enough, 00:20:39.93\00:20:44.01 50 Super Bowl games, 24 of the times, the team that won the coin toss won the game. 00:20:44.01\00:20:53.78 So what's the big deal? The big deal is this, all to make this 00:20:53.78\00:20:58.49 point -- If you're gonna have a coin toss, you have to have a coin with two sides on it. 00:20:58.49\00:21:03.89 If it doesn't have two sides, you're living in a two-dimensional world. 00:21:03.89\00:21:08.03 Three dimensions -- You have to have -- Every coin has two 00:21:08.03\00:21:11.27 sides. It's the two sides together that make the coin valuable. So, once upon a time, 00:21:11.27\00:21:19.17 God minted a pure gold coin. Absolutely, exquisitely expe-- The most expensive in 00:21:19.17\00:21:28.12 the universe. And He called the coin "Salvation." 00:21:28.12\00:21:32.72 And guess what -- It has two sides. Do you know the two sides 00:21:32.72\00:21:39.19 to the coin of salvation? Open your Bible up. Let's go. The 00:21:39.19\00:21:43.43 words of Jesus. John chapter 15. All right? 00:22:32.35\00:22:36.15 Now, do you see the two sides of the coin? They're right there. 00:22:36.32\00:22:39.42 Did you see them? Let's write it down. Grab your study guide 00:22:39.42\00:22:42.39 right now, and let's just scribble this down because this is absolutely critical to 00:22:42.39\00:22:46.06 understand the two sides. So let's fill it in, what we 00:23:28.50\00:23:31.67 just read, the words of Jesus. Jot it down. 00:23:31.67\00:23:34.08 Jesus speaking, "If you remain in Me" -- Hit the pause button 00:23:34.08\00:23:37.28 right there. We will call that -- We will 00:23:37.28\00:23:39.88 call that the "We are in Christ" side of the coin. 00:23:39.88\00:23:42.62 Remember, there are two sides. So that's the "We are in Christ" 00:23:42.62\00:23:45.85 side of the coin. Jot that down, please. 00:23:45.85\00:23:47.42 We are in Christ. So, Jesus says, "If you remain 00:23:47.42\00:23:53.53 in Me and I remain in you" -- Oh. 00:23:53.53\00:23:57.00 There's the flip side of the coin. 00:23:57.00\00:23:58.37 We'll call that the "Christ is in us" side of the coin. 00:23:58.37\00:24:02.04 Jot that down. "You remain in me and I remain 00:24:02.04\00:24:05.07 in you, then you will bear much fruit." 00:24:05.07\00:24:08.68 Plain and simple, ladies and gentlemen. 00:24:08.68\00:24:10.48 The coin has two sides. One side is the "We are in 00:24:10.48\00:24:13.65 Christ" side. Turn the coin over -- 00:24:13.65\00:24:16.15 "Christ is in us" side. You have to have both sides. 00:24:16.15\00:24:19.02 If you don't have both sides, you don't have the coin, and you 00:24:19.02\00:24:21.22 don't have the value. Now, let's put it up as a 00:24:21.22\00:24:24.46 graphic. Put it up as a graphic, please, 00:24:24.46\00:24:26.83 on the screen. Let's go back to that "We are in 00:24:26.83\00:24:29.16 Christ" side. What's that? 00:24:29.16\00:24:30.97 That is God's gift of forgiveness. 00:24:30.97\00:24:33.17 Forgiveness. You got this in your study 00:24:33.17\00:24:35.64 guide. That's God's gift of 00:24:35.64\00:24:37.51 forgiveness. With the "Christ is in us" side, 00:24:37.51\00:24:40.38 that's God's gift of fruit. Both are gifts. 00:24:40.38\00:24:44.01 The fruit, the forgiveness. Two sides of the coin. 00:24:44.01\00:24:46.55 Two gifts. The first side of the coin, the 00:24:46.55\00:24:50.19 gift of forgiveness, that's the theological term called 00:24:50.19\00:24:52.65 "justification." We don't use this language. 00:24:52.65\00:24:54.79 This generation doesn't even know. 00:24:54.79\00:24:56.09 What are you talking about? We don't use it anymore, but 00:24:56.09\00:24:58.23 that's what that building over there calls it -- justification. 00:24:58.23\00:25:02.20 The other side of the coin, "Christ is in us," that's what 00:25:02.20\00:25:04.50 they call "sanctification." Now, you see what's on there in 00:25:04.50\00:25:07.57 yellow? That's what came to me after we 00:25:07.57\00:25:10.14 printed the study guide, so you're gonna have to scribble 00:25:10.14\00:25:12.41 this down real quick because the contrast goes on. 00:25:12.41\00:25:15.91 On the "We are in Christ" side of the coin, that's what changes 00:25:15.91\00:25:20.52 our external status. Forgiveness, justification. 00:25:20.52\00:25:24.65 It changes our external status. Flip the coin over. 00:25:24.65\00:25:27.69 "Christ is in us" side of the coin -- that's what -- that's 00:25:27.69\00:25:31.83 what changes our internal state. Something changes inside of us. 00:25:31.83\00:25:36.90 One more. Keep writing. The "We are in Christ" side of 00:25:36.90\00:25:40.04 the coin -- that's what declares our righteousness, our right 00:25:40.04\00:25:45.34 being. You flip the coin over. 00:25:45.34\00:25:47.04 What's that side of the coin? "Christ is in us." 00:25:47.04\00:25:49.08 That's what demonstrates our righteousness. 00:25:49.08\00:25:52.75 Now, this is gonna come clear in just a moment. 00:25:52.75\00:25:54.55 But the two sides. You say, "Dwight, but listen. 00:25:54.55\00:25:56.32 Come on. Please. What's the big deal? 00:25:56.32\00:25:58.22 Who cares, two sides?" Ah. Here's the big deal. 00:25:58.22\00:26:00.89 Keep the graphic up, please. Because some people are in 00:26:00.89\00:26:04.76 big trouble. You know why? 00:26:04.76\00:26:06.73 Because they emphasize only one side of the coin. 00:26:06.73\00:26:10.23 They act as if there is no other side. So you can do that with 00:26:10.40\00:26:13.67 the "We are in Christ." You just say, "Hey, hallelujah. I'm saved. Grace, grace, grace. 00:26:13.67\00:26:16.97 Yo! Give me a high five, Jesus." And that's all they talk about. The flip side is just as true. 00:26:16.97\00:26:23.11 Some people jump to the bottom, and they say, "Christ is in us." 00:26:23.11\00:26:27.38 "Hey, behavior. You got to get your behavior together. You got to have fruit in your 00:26:27.38\00:26:30.95 life." And that's all they talk about. You need to be able to 00:26:30.95\00:26:35.09 spot those kind of people, because the moment you see them, they only got half a coin. 00:26:35.09\00:26:39.39 And one-sided coins are of no value. You have to have both 00:26:39.39\00:26:44.60 sides. The coin of salvation. Jesus says there are two sides 00:26:44.60\00:26:47.24 to it. And Paul comes along, and he says, "Amen." Yeah, Paul agrees with Christ. 00:26:47.24\00:26:51.54 Put the words on the screen. Galatians 2:20. 00:26:51.54\00:26:53.78 "I am crucified with Christ" -- Oh, hit the pause button there. 00:26:53.94\00:26:58.41 Scribble it into your study guide. 00:26:58.41\00:27:00.12 That's the "We are in Christ" side. 00:27:00.12\00:27:02.18 You weren't at Calvary. I wasn't in Calvary. 00:27:02.18\00:27:05.05 But He took us to Calvary, and He took our sins there. 00:27:05.05\00:27:07.92 We are in Christ. "I am crucified with Christ -- 00:27:07.92\00:27:11.09 nevertheless I live. Yet not I, but --" 00:27:11.09\00:27:13.60 Oh, here it comes. Christ lives where? 00:27:13.60\00:27:16.36 "In me." That's the "Christ in us" side 00:27:16.36\00:27:19.60 of the same coin. Keep reading. 00:27:19.60\00:27:22.64 There they are, ladies and gentlemen -- two sides to the 00:27:29.68\00:27:31.91 salvation coin -- "We are in Christ," "Christ is in us." 00:27:31.91\00:27:36.15 And once you know these two sides, you're gonna spot it all 00:27:36.32\00:27:40.89 the way through the New Testament. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. But with your 00:27:40.89\00:27:45.79 permission, I'd like to concentrate on the second side of the coin. Because, actually, 00:27:45.79\00:27:52.67 #RxF4Now, our little series last fall, we were focusing on the "We are in Christ." 00:27:52.67\00:27:56.07 Now, futile times we have, with the "Storm" series, let's flip 00:27:56.07\00:28:01.48 the coin over. "Christ is in us." "Is that just Jesus's words that bring that to us? 00:28:01.48\00:28:05.28 One little line, and you're making a big case out of it? Are 00:28:05.28\00:28:08.32 you kidding?" Get your pen running. I'm not gonna comment on a single one of these verses. 00:28:08.32\00:28:11.42 I'm gonna run them by you. Here they come. Six in a row. Write 00:28:11.42\00:28:15.02 them down. That's the second side we're gonna concentrate on. 00:28:19.83\00:28:22.70 We just read that as well, but now fresh territory. 00:28:24.97\00:28:27.44 Keep reading. Paul says, "I pray that Christ 00:28:35.54\00:28:39.91 may dwell in your hearts." Christ in, inside. 00:28:39.91\00:28:43.89 This is one of the big ones for "Christ in us." 00:28:47.92\00:28:51.09 One more. And by the way, he's speaking to 00:28:59.90\00:29:02.57 the storm generation, the end-game storm generation. 00:29:02.57\00:29:05.61 It's called Laodicea. He speaks these words to 00:29:05.61\00:29:08.58 Laodicea. Revelations 3:20. 00:29:08.58\00:29:11.25 Christ in you. 00:29:19.12\00:29:20.69 "Yeah, but come on, Dwight. I mean, why are you making such 00:29:24.06\00:29:26.76 a big deal about the second side of the coin?" 00:29:26.76\00:29:29.53 Oh, I'll tell you why. We just read it. 00:29:29.53\00:29:31.67 Write it down. John 15:5. What did we read? 00:29:31.67\00:29:34.07 "I am the Vine --" Jot it down -- "you are the branches. 00:29:34.07\00:29:37.47 If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much --" 00:29:37.47\00:29:42.84 What? What's the next word? You'll "bear much fruit." 00:29:42.84\00:29:47.85 For the God of the universe -- I'm talking about the Father, 00:29:47.85\00:29:49.82 the Son, and the Holy Spirit -- for the God of the Universe, 00:29:49.82\00:29:52.45 "bearing fruit is a huge deal." You know why? Jot this down. 00:29:52.45\00:29:56.32 "Because it is --" Fruit is "the only way to show that the branch 00:29:56.32\00:30:03.13 is truly connected to the Vine. No fruit, there's no connection. 00:30:03.13\00:30:08.04 No connection, there's no fruit. It's a big deal. 00:30:08.04\00:30:12.01 In fact, Jesus tells a parable over here in Luke. 00:30:12.01\00:30:15.04 It's a parable. We never read this one, do we? 00:30:15.04\00:30:18.05 Luke chapter 13. But he's making the point. 00:30:18.05\00:30:20.22 Watch this. Luke chapter 13. Beginning in verse 6. 00:30:20.22\00:30:24.65 And Jesus told this parable. Here comes the parable now. 00:30:24.65\00:30:27.79 "A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard." 00:30:27.79\00:30:29.82 So Jesus was in the vineyard in John 15. 00:30:29.82\00:30:31.99 We're still in the vineyard. But here is this one little fig 00:30:31.99\00:30:34.66 tree growing up out of the vineyard. 00:30:34.66\00:30:37.17 And the gardener jumps up, he says, "Sir, hold it, hold it, 00:30:54.92\00:30:57.69 hold it." 00:30:57.69\00:30:59.22 Would you jot that down, please? 00:31:10.20\00:31:12.00 Ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake about it. God very much 00:31:18.17\00:31:24.78 wants fruit. You know why? Because fruit-bearing is proof to anybody who asks -- who asks, 00:31:24.78\00:31:34.82 who wants to know if I'm connected to the Vine. For anybody who observes, who 00:31:34.82\00:31:42.00 wants to ascertain, are you connected to the Vine? It's a big deal for God because 00:31:42.00\00:31:48.90 it's God's character on the line. And if He has people who 00:31:48.90\00:31:52.11 are connected to Him, they'll bear the fruit of who He is. 00:31:52.11\00:31:57.65 It's a big deal. You say, "Well, I suppose it's a big deal, Dwight. But you know what? 00:31:57.65\00:32:00.05 It really depends on what kind of fruit you're talking about." Well, how about this fruit? 00:32:00.05\00:32:02.92 On the screen again. 00:32:02.92\00:32:03.82 "The fruit --" Write that in, please. 00:32:05.92\00:32:08.96 So, what did Jesus say? "If you abide in me and I abide 00:32:24.41\00:32:27.18 in you, you will bear much fruit." 00:32:27.18\00:32:29.54 In other words, it's gonna show. Reminds me of that day when Satan came sauntering into 00:32:29.71\00:32:34.02 the council room in heaven. God spots Satan walking in. He says, 00:32:34.02\00:32:39.22 "Yo, Satan. You see that friend of mine down there? I mean, has 00:32:39.22\00:32:43.79 anybody gotten closer to me than that man named Job? What do you 00:32:43.79\00:32:46.53 think of Job?" And Satan just shoots back, "Yeah, God, I'll tell you what. You turn off your 00:32:46.53\00:32:50.50 little blessing machine, and he'll turn away from you. I 00:32:50.50\00:32:55.67 promise you." God pauses for a moment. He thinks. He said, 00:32:55.67\00:32:58.47 "Okay." I'll turn off the blessing machine. You can have 00:32:58.47\00:33:03.98 at it with him. Only don't you kill him. All right?" 00:33:03.98\00:33:08.52 In the Book of Job, there's this stunning narrative of a man who, 00:33:08.68\00:33:12.02 in the midst of crippling calamities -- I mean, we're 00:33:12.02\00:33:14.49 talking about loss of property, loss of the beloved ones, loss 00:33:14.49\00:33:18.13 of personal health -- relentlessly is hanging on to 00:33:18.13\00:33:22.03 his trust in God. In fact, for me -- Okay, for me, 00:33:22.03\00:33:25.00 the stunning of all stunning lines in Job is this one -- When 00:33:25.00\00:33:30.61 he sobs his confession and he says, "Even though He slays me, 00:33:30.61\00:33:38.31 I'm gonna trust Him." 00:33:38.31\00:33:41.12 Man, if I could borrow language that's gonna come from 2,000 years after Job, I'd say, "Look 00:33:41.28\00:33:47.02 at Job. Obviously here he is abiding in Christ, and Christ is 00:33:47.02\00:33:53.40 clearly abiding in him because just look at the fruit. "Have you seen my friend Job?" 00:33:53.40\00:34:00.90 "Have you seen my friend Tony?" "Have you seen my friend 00:34:00.90\00:34:11.58 Stanley?" Look. What does Job say? Jot it down. 00:34:11.58\00:34:16.05 How did Jesus put it when he was on Earth? 00:34:25.13\00:34:26.70 Hebrews 2:13 says this was his life confession. 00:34:26.70\00:34:29.43 Hebrews 2:13 -- "I will put My trust in Him." 00:34:29.43\00:34:34.54 "I will put My trust in Him." 00:34:34.54\00:34:36.87 Jesus says, "Abide in me and I in you." 00:34:40.61\00:34:46.72 "The faith of Jesus is revealed --" Jot it down one 00:34:46.72\00:34:49.02 more time -- "in the fruit of the Spirit." 00:34:49.02\00:34:51.92 The fruit. Okay, here's "Desire of Ages." 00:34:51.92\00:34:54.36 Oh, this is dynamite. Watch this. 00:34:54.36\00:34:56.96 That's what fruit is. It's just, "Yo, man, look at 00:35:08.17\00:35:10.87 that guy. Reminds me of God." But it gets even better. 00:35:10.87\00:35:14.68 Watch this. 00:35:14.68\00:35:15.78 You know why? Because the fruit of the Spirit 00:35:25.92\00:35:27.26 doesn't come by labor. Doesn't come by grunting and 00:35:27.26\00:35:29.92 straining. "I'm gonna get this." 00:35:29.92\00:35:31.69 It comes by abiding. By abiding in Him. 00:35:31.69\00:35:36.16 "Abide in me and I in you." So, we got four apple trees on 00:35:36.16\00:35:40.04 our little property. And boy, when they're going, 00:35:40.04\00:35:45.31 delicious fruit. But I'll tell you the truth. 00:35:45.31\00:35:51.91 I go out in the middle of the night. 00:35:51.91\00:35:53.92 No kidding. This is true. I go out in the middle of the 00:35:53.92\00:35:56.05 night, and I stand near those trees. 00:35:56.05\00:35:58.52 And I have never, in the middle of the night, ever heard those 00:35:58.52\00:36:03.19 apple trees sobbing, "I am trying so hard to bear fruit, 00:36:03.19\00:36:07.86 but nothing's coming. I'm grunting. I'm panting. 00:36:07.86\00:36:11.33 I'm straining. But no fruit is popping out. 00:36:11.33\00:36:14.77 Poor, pitiful me." 00:36:14.77\00:36:20.41 Never. Never heard it. You know why? Because these four little 00:36:20.58\00:36:25.85 apple trees, they abide in the soil, and the soil abides in them. They abide under the 00:36:25.85\00:36:32.55 glorious sun, and the sun abides in them. They abide in the showers of rain, and the rain 00:36:32.55\00:36:39.46 abides in them. They just stand there, and apparently, they bear 00:36:39.46\00:36:44.67 fruit from that quiet abiding. So maybe that's what's supposed 00:36:44.67\00:36:51.14 to be with us. What did we just read? 00:36:51.14\00:36:52.04 "The Savior does not bid us labor --" work, strain, groan -- 00:36:52.21\00:36:56.81 "to bear fruit." Can I put it this way? 00:36:56.81\00:36:59.81 Let's just shift the metaphors here, move from fruit to 00:36:59.81\00:37:02.35 relationships. 00:37:02.35\00:37:05.12 When you fall in love with somebody, and you have. When you 00:37:05.29\00:37:11.33 fall in love with somebody, you really end up abiding in that person. And that person abides 00:37:11.33\00:37:18.47 in you. You don't grunt. You don't growl. You don't grit 00:37:18.47\00:37:21.87 yourself into love. You abide in a very special friendship that 00:37:21.87\00:37:29.04 deepens the more you abide in each other. You talk. You listen. You keep reminding 00:37:29.04\00:37:34.45 yourself, "Two ears, one mouth, two ears, one mouth," to remember the lesson. 00:37:34.45\00:37:40.32 But the more time you spend together, the deeper it grows. No kidding. Really. 00:37:40.32\00:37:46.96 The more time. The more heartache, the more pain, the 00:37:46.96\00:37:51.80 more tears you go through together, the deeper grows your love for her, your love for him. 00:37:51.80\00:37:57.87 You don't take a pill to get this. You don't grunt. 00:37:57.87\00:38:05.15 You just abide in her, in him. Even as she, as he, abides in 00:38:05.15\00:38:11.32 you. And ever so surely, ever so slowly, you begin to change. It's how it works in a 00:38:11.32\00:38:18.86 relationship. Love changes you. The most powerful book I've ever 00:38:18.86\00:38:24.47 read on marriage is written by a Canadian author named Mike 00:38:24.47\00:38:28.20 Mason. Title of the book, "The Mystery of Marriage: As Iron 00:38:28.20\00:38:31.07 Sharpens Iron." In my humble opinion, here is an absolutely brilliant observation. 00:38:31.07\00:38:36.75 Put the words on the screen for you. 00:38:36.91\00:38:38.85 "Yet ironically, it is some of --" I love this. 00:38:57.70\00:39:00.67 So, if you're heading down that pathway, jot it down. 00:39:16.58\00:39:19.49 That's what Jesus is talking about when he says, "Abide in 00:39:27.76\00:39:30.33 me and I in you. You will bear much fruit." 00:39:30.33\00:39:33.34 Be prepared for change. Revolutionary change. Ever so slowly, ever so surely, 00:39:33.50\00:39:40.01 that change just creeps into your relationship. Well, the 00:39:40.01\00:39:45.58 question that begs itself is, "How should we abide, He in us, and us in Him?" As it turns out, 00:39:45.58\00:39:55.22 this coin -- As it turns out, the faith of Jesus is absolutely essential for both sides of the 00:39:55.22\00:40:00.96 coin. The faith of Jesus. The question is, Jesus's faith when he was here, "How did he 00:40:00.96\00:40:08.34 get his faith?" Oh, come on. Remember that moment? 00:40:08.34\00:40:12.84 Satan materializes -- Shoo! -- materializes himself. He's standing in front of the 00:40:12.84\00:40:16.78 emaciated and famished God-made flesh, the Son of God. And with that assault of three 00:40:16.78\00:40:24.45 blinding temptations, Jesus picks up the challenge. And have you noticed, all three 00:40:24.45\00:40:33.09 temptation, when He responds to the temptation, He begins with the identical words. 00:40:33.09\00:40:36.97 What are the words? Do you remember? "It is written." Yeah. 00:40:36.97\00:40:44.21 In fact, that first temptation responds -- Jot it down in your 00:40:44.37\00:40:47.01 study guide. 00:40:47.01\00:40:47.74 Every word. Now, remember, when God speaks a 00:40:56.79\00:40:58.69 word -- When the omnipotent God speaks a word, the word 00:40:58.69\00:41:02.22 instantly creates the reality it describes. 00:41:02.22\00:41:04.46 So when Jesus quotes the word back to the tempter, and he says, "Man shall not live by 00:41:04.63\00:41:11.40 bread alone," in the very speaking of the word, divine power is unleased in him, and he 00:41:11.40\00:41:16.04 can stare at those stones that he could turn into bread, and he can say no to his appetite, just 00:41:16.04\00:41:21.48 like that. Where'd the power come from? It was supernaturally 00:41:21.48\00:41:25.41 infused in him because he believed the word. And he says, "Man shall not live 00:41:25.41\00:41:28.52 by bread alone." Pshew! All three times. 00:41:28.52\00:41:34.79 The Word of God was huge for Jesus. As he abided in the 00:41:34.79\00:41:40.63 Father, and the Father abided in him, the word was the key. In 00:41:40.63\00:41:46.97 fact, watch this. Jesus is obviously saturated with the Psalms, the prayer book of his 00:41:46.97\00:41:52.51 faith community. He has memorized the Psalms. The book of Hebrews chapter 10 says these 00:41:52.51\00:41:58.18 are actually words Jesus quoted. Jot them down. This is from 00:41:58.18\00:42:02.38 Psalm 40:8. Jesus speaking... 00:42:02.38\00:42:03.42 So he quotes the promise, and he says amen to it, and, boom, 00:42:09.36\00:42:14.36 written all over the walls of his heart and his mind. 00:42:14.36\00:42:16.87 And guess what -- you and I say amen to it, all over us, the 00:42:16.87\00:42:21.27 Word, the Law of God in our heart. 00:42:21.27\00:42:25.54 Psalm 119:11. 00:42:25.54\00:42:27.38 The Word of God is the secret to Jesus abiding in Him and He in 00:42:34.72\00:42:38.29 Jesus all through his life, all through his mission. 00:42:38.29\00:42:41.16 And get this. I had never seen this before. But even as he is 00:42:41.32\00:42:47.50 expiring, he's been hanging on the cross for six hours. Darkness is moving in to swallow 00:42:47.50\00:42:53.10 him up. In that moment just before death -- I never knew 00:42:53.10\00:42:58.47 this before. Did you? -- Jesus goes to an embedded promise in 00:42:58.47\00:43:06.68 the Psalms. I'm indebted to Camron Schofield for showing me this in his book "Heralding the 00:43:06.68\00:43:12.99 Loud Cry." Watch this. You remember when Jesus dies. Finally at the end, he cries out 00:43:12.99\00:43:18.06 a rather triumphant exclamation. Do you remember what it was? "It --" What? "is finished." 00:43:18.06\00:43:26.00 And then the seventh word of the cross, right after he says, "It is finished," the final 00:43:26.00\00:43:29.97 word -- "Father --" And how's it go? "Father, into Your hands 00:43:29.97\00:43:35.88 I commit my Spirit." Now, people have come -- and I've taught the 00:43:35.88\00:43:40.68 cross through the years -- people have come and said, "Hey, Dwight. I mean, how do you 00:43:40.68\00:43:44.09 explain that faith?" And you know what I've said? It's kind of a wimpy reply, but 00:43:44.09\00:43:49.02 this is what I've used for years -- "Well, you know, Jesus, before he came to Calvary, he 00:43:49.02\00:43:54.20 was telling everybody, 'I'll be dead for three days, and then 00:43:54.20\00:43:56.83 I'll come up. I'll be dead for three days, and then I'll rise up. I'll be dead for three days, 00:43:56.83\00:43:59.57 and I'll rise up.'" So Jesus remembers the promise. He remembers what he's been 00:43:59.57\00:44:03.54 telling everybody, and he hangs on to that. And how wrong that 00:44:03.54\00:44:08.48 interpretation is. Thank you, Camron. You know what Jesus 00:44:08.48\00:44:13.01 does? As the darkness in overwhelming him, just as it's about to suck him up, Jesus puts 00:44:13.01\00:44:21.76 his finger on an embedded promise in the Psalms. Write it down. It's Psalm 16. 00:44:21.76\00:44:25.59 Unbelievable. 00:44:25.59\00:44:26.56 Look at these words. It's Jesus speaking. 00:44:26.73\00:44:29.26 "I will keep my eyes always on the LORD." 00:44:29.26\00:44:32.47 No matter how dark my life right now, "I will keep my eyes always 00:44:32.47\00:44:36.67 on the LORD." I will put my trust in Him. 00:44:36.67\00:44:38.51 Remember, he lives by that. "I will keep my eyes always on 00:44:38.51\00:44:41.84 the LORD. With him at My right hand --" 00:44:41.84\00:44:43.85 Now watch this -- "I will not be shaken." 00:44:43.85\00:44:46.25 Why will you not be shaken as you're dying? 00:44:46.25\00:44:47.85 Keeping reading. "Because You will not --" Write 00:44:47.85\00:44:50.45 that in -- "You will not abandon Me to the realm of the grave." 00:44:50.45\00:44:53.86 You will not let me stay in there. 00:44:53.86\00:44:55.56 You will not keep me in the grave, in the realm of the 00:44:55.56\00:44:58.09 dead. "You will not abandon Me to the 00:44:58.09\00:45:02.06 realm of the dead, nor --" Write that word in -- "will You let 00:45:02.06\00:45:05.07 Your faithful one see decay." In his mind, as the darkness 00:45:05.07\00:45:11.17 overwhelms him -- In fact, "Desire of Ages" tells us he 00:45:11.17\00:45:13.38 cannot see past the portals of the tomb. 00:45:13.38\00:45:15.44 This is a one-way street into eternal oblivion. 00:45:15.44\00:45:20.65 But in his mind, as he contemplates that ending, the Spirit brings back to him a 00:45:20.82\00:45:27.09 promise -- You will not let me be held captive in the realm of 00:45:27.09\00:45:31.83 the dead. You will not let this body decay. And so, in a cry of 00:45:31.83\00:45:40.90 sheer faith, "Amen to that promise. It is finished. Father, 00:45:40.90\00:45:44.41 into Your hands, I commit My Spirit." Boom, he's dead. But what God spoke with His lips 00:45:44.41\00:45:52.01 is instantly created. And that body locked in the realm of the 00:45:52.01\00:46:01.69 dead, not a moment of decay. Three days later, poof! Isn't 00:46:01.69\00:46:09.36 that amazing? Now, Cameron Schofield -- I want you to get his point. Words on the screen. 00:46:09.36\00:46:13.07 "If you don't get anything else out of this study --" Schofield writing -- "I want you to listen 00:46:13.07\00:46:17.67 carefully and get this." 00:46:17.67\00:46:19.07 The italics are his. "He believed that God would keep 00:46:34.52\00:46:39.56 His Word." He died. 00:46:39.56\00:46:44.73 The faith of Jesus -- "I will put my trust in Him even in 00:46:44.90\00:46:49.64 death." And in that instant before He dies, the promise appears to Him that He had read. 00:46:49.64\00:46:55.28 How many times have I read the Psalms and never thought about Jesus reading this line? 00:46:55.28\00:46:58.78 He read it. He knew it. "You will not leave me in the 00:46:58.78\00:47:03.75 realm of the dead. You will not let my body decay." Amen! 00:47:03.75\00:47:08.72 Dead. And God says, "You quoted my Word back to me. 00:47:08.72\00:47:15.73 You quoted my omnipotent Word back to me. 00:47:15.90\00:47:18.97 And because you believe it, you get it." 00:47:18.97\00:47:24.91 That's the faith of Jesus. "Here are they that keep the 00:47:24.91\00:47:27.28 commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus." 00:47:27.28\00:47:29.44 That would be the storm generation, the end-time 00:47:29.44\00:47:31.55 generation. They're known with two 00:47:31.55\00:47:33.15 characteristics. 00:47:33.15\00:47:34.22 They keep the commandments of God, and then there's nothing 00:47:34.38\00:47:37.92 else. It says, "and the faith of Jesus," meaning the keep the 00:47:37.92\00:47:42.66 faith of Jesus. Your faith won't get you anywhere. You can't get 00:47:42.66\00:47:46.59 saved by your faith. You and I can only be saved by the faith 00:47:46.59\00:47:50.67 of the Lord Jesus Himself. The faith of Jesus. "You abide in 00:47:50.67\00:47:55.37 me. I abide in you." You'll be okay. Where did Jesus get His 00:47:55.37\00:48:01.64 faith? From the Word of God, of course. Where do we get -- Where do we get the faith of Jesus 00:48:01.64\00:48:05.78 from? From the Word of God, of course. Let me end with this -- 00:48:05.78\00:48:08.95 "Desire of Ages." Let me end with this quotation. "It is through the Word --" Write that 00:48:08.95\00:48:13.79 in. "It is through the Word that Christ abides in His followers." That's how He does it -- through 00:48:13.79\00:48:20.00 the Word. Keep reading. "The words of Christ --" that 00:48:20.00\00:48:23.33 would be in the Gospels -- "are sprit and life." That's John 00:48:23.33\00:48:26.43 6:63. Keep reading. "Receiving Christ's words, you receive the 00:48:26.43\00:48:29.87 life of the Vine. You live by every word that proceeds out of 00:48:29.87\00:48:32.81 the mouth of God. The life of Christ in you produces -- " Can 00:48:32.81\00:48:35.74 you believe this? Jot it down. "The life of Christ in you produces the same fruits as in 00:48:35.74\00:48:40.88 Him." That's why when you abide in Jesus and He abides in you, 00:48:40.88\00:48:44.99 people look at you, and you know what they're thinking about? They're not thinking about me. 00:48:44.99\00:48:48.99 They're not thinking about you. They're thinking, "Man, that guy is like this with Jesus." 00:48:48.99\00:48:53.90 "That girl is like this with Jesus." What's showing up? 00:48:53.90\00:48:57.43 The fruits of the Spirit, that's what's showing up. They say, "I 00:48:57.43\00:49:03.30 recognize that. I recognize that. I recognize that boy." They took note that these men 00:49:03.30\00:49:07.78 had been with Jesus. See? It's the fruit -- Acts 4:13. 00:49:07.78\00:49:11.38 It's the fruit. That's it. That's it. 00:49:11.38\00:49:19.69 You know what that means? 00:49:19.69\00:49:21.49 We'll finish the sentence here. "Living in Christ, adhering --" 00:49:21.66\00:49:24.79 or clinging -- "to Christ, supported by Christ, drawing 00:49:24.79\00:49:27.60 nourishment from Christ, you bear fruit after --" the 00:49:27.60\00:49:30.27 likeness. The similitude is the likeness 00:49:30.27\00:49:32.43 of Jesus. I'm telling you what, ladies and 00:49:32.43\00:49:34.24 gentlemen. See the two sides? 00:49:34.24\00:49:36.10 See, here's the salvation coin. Two sides. Every side is Jesus. 00:49:36.27\00:49:41.61 It is Jesus from stem to stern. It is the faith of Jesus -- both 00:49:41.61\00:49:45.98 sides. We are in Christ. He is in us. It's Jesus from beginning 00:49:45.98\00:49:49.55 to end. And that's good news, because if it depends on you and 00:49:49.55\00:49:56.36 it depends on me, curtains. It's not my faith. It's not your 00:49:56.36\00:50:02.50 faith. It's the faith of Jesus that He's offering you and me today. I will put my trust in 00:50:02.50\00:50:11.04 Him. You know what that means? Jot it down. One last 00:50:11.04\00:50:14.24 fill-in-the-blank. "If you want to abide in Christ and you want Him to abide in you, every day 00:50:14.24\00:50:20.45 ask for the faith of Jesus as you read the Word of God." Now, I'm gonna repeat that a 00:50:20.45\00:50:26.69 thousand times right now. Every day ask for the faith of Jesus as you read the Word of 00:50:26.69\00:50:33.06 God. Every day -- In fact, say it out loud with me. 00:50:33.06\00:50:37.37 Every day ask for the faith of Jesus as you read the Word of 00:50:37.37\00:50:41.64 God. Come on, let's do it again. Every day ask for the faith of Jesus as you read the Word of 00:50:41.64\00:50:48.38 God. That's it. That's it. 00:50:48.38\00:50:51.15 Both sides of the coin are now dealt with. You're okay, and I'm 00:50:51.15\00:50:57.02 okay, because we have the faith of Jesus. I'm telling you what. 00:50:57.02\00:51:02.92 I'm just saying. It is through the Word -- What did we just 00:51:02.92\00:51:09.00 read? It is through the Word that Christ abides in us. And, oh, by the way, when Christ 00:51:09.00\00:51:13.64 abides in you and you abide in Him, guess what. You will not 00:51:13.64\00:51:17.74 only bear much fruit. No, no, no, no, no, no. But it will be 00:51:17.74\00:51:21.54 the beginning of a story of a friendship that will last forever and ever. Amen. 00:51:21.54\00:51:26.48 That's it. That's the teaching. Take it home. 00:51:26.48\00:51:30.79 Take it into your heart. I want to pray with you after we sing 00:51:30.79\00:51:36.09 two stanzas -- Ralph Carmichael. This is a great piece. Steve, you know this piece well. 00:51:36.09\00:51:41.46 The Savior is waiting to... enter your heart. It's, "I want 00:51:41.46\00:51:47.87 to come in." It's the Laodicean invitation. "I'm knocking. Let 00:51:47.87\00:51:51.27 me in." There are only two stanzas to it, so, ushers, please stand. Please go. 00:51:51.27\00:51:54.18 And let's go. Let's sing. The Savior is standing waiting, knocking to enter your heart. 00:55:00.20\00:55:14.34 Time and again, He has knocked. Oh, God, if there -- if there is somebody here right now who's 00:55:14.34\00:55:28.16 hearing the knocking and knows who it is, for that man, for that woman, please... 00:55:28.16\00:55:41.74 just a touch of the faith of Jesus in that heart to have the courage to open the door from 00:55:41.74\00:55:49.41 the inside... and invite the Savior in. Oh, God, it's a big 00:55:49.41\00:56:00.36 deal. We abide in You. You abide in us. And the fruit grows. 00:56:00.36\00:56:10.83 So thank You. Thank You that the truth is all wrapped up in 00:56:10.83\00:56:18.17 Jesus, the faith of Jesus. We go today with that faith in our hearts, His faith, His 00:56:18.17\00:56:26.65 promise, His Word. And now may the grace of Jesus and the love 00:56:26.65\00:56:41.43 of the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us 00:56:41.43\00:56:48.30 all.
