00:15:11.37\00:15:18.31 I have dreamed 00:15:20.02\00:15:23.99 A great dream 00:15:24.02\00:15:29.59 That my Lord 00:15:29.62\00:15:33.23 Shall rule our land 00:15:33.26\00:15:39.70 Precious Lord, has just sung 00:18:49.86\00:18:52.99 And you will walk with us. 00:18:53.03\00:18:55.06 How could we ask for more? 00:18:58.10\00:19:00.94 Let this vineyard of you 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.84 Capture our hearts and our minds 00:19:03.87\00:19:06.68 We pray in Jesus' name. 00:19:06.71\00:19:08.74 Amen. 00:19:08.78\00:19:11.38 It's kind of embarrassing to put it this way 00:19:11.41\00:19:15.18 but I gotta ask the question. 00:19:15.22\00:19:16.92 Forgive me 00:19:16.95\00:19:18.29 but does God have Alzheimer's? 00:19:18.32\00:19:24.69 I hold here in my hands, can you see it? 00:19:27.70\00:19:30.53 Latest issue of Time magazine, 00:19:30.57\00:19:32.07 this is actually dated next week. 00:19:32.10\00:19:35.37 The Alzheimer's pill is the subtitle. 00:19:35.40\00:19:38.74 A radical new drug could change old age. 00:19:38.77\00:19:42.01 Let me just read a line or two to you 00:19:42.04\00:19:44.15 just wondering about God. 00:19:44.18\00:19:46.68 Dr Frank Longo isn't the kind of guy 00:19:46.72\00:19:49.12 who chokes up easily. 00:19:49.15\00:19:51.32 The pre-eminent neurologist is better known 00:19:51.35\00:19:53.25 for his professional stoicism 00:19:53.29\00:19:55.06 and scholarly approach to the devastation 00:19:55.09\00:19:57.09 he sees weekly in his Alzheimer's patients. 00:19:57.13\00:19:59.69 The people who come to his office 00:19:59.73\00:20:01.06 at the Stanford University School of Medicine, 00:20:01.10\00:20:02.70 their memory just a little bit worse 00:20:02.73\00:20:05.23 than the last time he saw them. 00:20:05.27\00:20:08.24 But today, even though 00:20:08.27\00:20:09.60 he's trying to keep it together, 00:20:09.64\00:20:10.97 his throat tightens. 00:20:11.01\00:20:13.17 He's in a small examining room outside Kansas City, Kansas, 00:20:13.21\00:20:16.61 watching a young man 00:20:16.64\00:20:17.98 do something people do everyday. 00:20:18.01\00:20:19.35 He's swallowing a pill with a big gulp of water, 00:20:19.38\00:20:22.08 but it's not just any pill, 00:20:22.12\00:20:23.45 it's a new drug that Longo hopes will prove to be 00:20:23.49\00:20:26.02 an effective treatment for Alzheimer's 00:20:26.05\00:20:27.92 and when the man swallows, tears pool in the deep furrows 00:20:27.96\00:20:32.89 around Longo's eyes. 00:20:32.93\00:20:37.07 My biggest frustration is that we've cured Alzheimer's 00:20:37.10\00:20:39.37 in mice many times, 00:20:39.40\00:20:40.74 why can't we move the success to people? 00:20:40.77\00:20:43.47 Longo asks. 00:20:43.51\00:20:44.84 He's referring to the numerous promising compounds 00:20:44.87\00:20:47.08 that have eliminated the amyloid plaques 00:20:47.11\00:20:51.31 associated with Alzheimer's in animals. 00:20:51.35\00:20:53.11 If the ongoing human 00:20:53.15\00:20:54.48 trials continue to progress the way he hopes, 00:20:54.52\00:20:56.75 Longo's drug called LM11A-31 00:20:56.79\00:21:00.49 could be a critical part of finally making that happen. 00:21:00.52\00:21:03.76 But that's still a big if. 00:21:03.79\00:21:05.93 Listen to these stats, America. 00:21:05.96\00:21:08.70 The stakes couldn't be higher, not just for Longo 00:21:08.73\00:21:10.73 but also for the world's ageing population in the US, 00:21:10.77\00:21:14.14 all right, our country, in the US, 00:21:14.17\00:21:16.17 one third of Americans 00:21:16.20\00:21:17.57 over 85 are already affected by Alzheimer's. 00:21:17.61\00:21:22.51 Globally nearly 50 million people 00:21:22.54\00:21:24.78 are living with dementia, 00:21:24.81\00:21:26.15 most of which is caused by Alzheimer's 00:21:26.18\00:21:28.88 and absent effective drugs or other interventions, 00:21:28.92\00:21:31.92 that number is expected to double every 20 years. 00:21:31.95\00:21:36.49 With no treatments, 00:21:36.52\00:21:37.96 caring for them falls to loved ones 00:21:37.99\00:21:39.66 and assisted-living facilities. 00:21:39.69\00:21:41.80 And some of you now, 00:23:41.88\00:23:43.39 let's put them on the screen, Isaiah 43:25, 00:23:43.42\00:23:47.96 God first person, 00:23:47.99\00:23:49.32 "'I, even I, am he 00:23:49.36\00:23:51.23 who blots out your transgressions, 00:23:51.26\00:23:53.83 for my own sake, and remembers your sins, 00:23:53.86\00:23:57.47 write it in please, no more." 00:23:57.50\00:24:01.44 'I will remember your sins no more. 00:24:01.47\00:24:03.81 Divine amnesia, come on, guys, how can we miss it? 00:24:03.84\00:24:07.08 First person promise, 00:24:07.11\00:24:08.44 I promise to blot out your transgressions 00:24:08.48\00:24:10.48 and remember your sins no more, 00:24:10.51\00:24:12.61 which begs the question, how much is no more? 00:24:12.65\00:24:16.22 How much is no more? 00:24:16.25\00:24:17.82 In fact, let's put the words up in English, you know what? 00:24:17.85\00:24:19.95 You can't make that any shorter than that. 00:24:19.99\00:24:21.39 No more. 00:24:21.42\00:24:22.86 No, I suppose you could, you could say "Nomo!" 00:24:22.89\00:24:27.20 So we'll use Nomo. 00:24:27.23\00:24:29.46 God says I will remember your sins nomo. 00:24:29.50\00:24:33.97 Just to make sure we get the point, 00:24:34.00\00:24:35.34 Isaiah goes on, jot this one down, 00:24:35.37\00:24:36.71 Isaiah 38:17, Isaiah speaking to God, 00:24:36.74\00:24:40.04 "You have put all my sins behind your back." 00:24:40.08\00:24:45.05 Throws them away, behind your back. 00:24:45.08\00:24:47.22 No wonder God can't remember our sins, 00:24:47.25\00:24:48.92 they're no longer sitting there in front of him. 00:24:48.95\00:24:50.92 The problem is they're sitting in front of somebody else 00:24:50.95\00:24:52.49 and somebody's always remembering, right, 00:24:52.52\00:24:53.96 somebody's always remembering 00:24:53.99\00:24:55.59 and if you can't think of anybody, 00:24:55.62\00:24:56.96 it's the devil. 00:24:56.99\00:24:58.33 The devil never lets you forget 00:24:58.36\00:24:59.69 and that's why you keep recalling them. 00:24:59.73\00:25:01.33 Come on, this is behind, too bad, there they are again. 00:25:01.36\00:25:05.00 Isaiah goes on, Isaiah 44, jot this down, verse 22, 00:25:05.03\00:25:08.74 God first person again, 00:25:08.77\00:25:10.11 "'I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, 00:25:10.14\00:25:13.14 your sins like the morning mist." 00:25:13.17\00:25:16.14 'And by the way, that's not the Microsoft Cloud 00:25:16.18\00:25:17.95 or the Apple Cloud, that's another cloud. 00:25:17.98\00:25:20.38 The white fluffy thing, how does it happen? 00:25:20.42\00:25:23.02 You're looking at it and suddenly it vanishes 00:25:23.05\00:25:24.95 in front of your eyes. 00:25:24.99\00:25:26.32 That's what I've done. 00:25:26.35\00:25:27.79 Like the low lying fog in the St Joseph River Valley, 00:25:27.82\00:25:31.89 gone with the advent of the sun. 00:25:31.93\00:25:34.56 God says, that's what I've done. 00:25:34.60\00:25:36.20 Jeremiah says listen guys, I hope you're not missing 00:25:36.23\00:25:37.80 what Isaiah is telling you but in case you have missed it, 00:25:37.83\00:25:40.74 let me add my voice, Jeremiah 31:34, 00:25:40.77\00:25:43.94 God, first person again, 00:25:43.97\00:25:45.51 "'For I will forgive their wickedness 00:25:45.54\00:25:47.08 and will remember their sins no more." 00:25:47.11\00:25:49.84 ' There it is again, no more. 00:25:49.88\00:25:52.28 I'm not going to remember it, I promise you. 00:25:52.31\00:25:56.48 I mean, you almost get the feeling, 00:25:56.52\00:25:57.85 no, either God wants us to conclude 00:25:57.89\00:25:59.22 that when it comes to our sins, 00:25:59.25\00:26:00.92 he really does suffer from a severe case of amnesia, nomo. 00:26:00.96\00:26:06.76 And Micah says, me too, me too, little Micah, 00:26:08.33\00:26:10.30 said I gotta get into this. 00:26:10.33\00:26:11.67 Let's put Micah on the screen, Micah 7:18-19, Micah asks, 00:26:11.70\00:26:15.67 "Who is a God like you, who pardons sin 00:26:15.70\00:26:19.11 and forgives the transgression of the remnant 00:26:19.14\00:26:21.14 of his inheritance? 00:26:21.18\00:26:22.61 You do not stay angry forever but you delight to show mercy. 00:26:22.64\00:26:26.31 Boy was that some singing this morning or what? 00:26:26.35\00:26:29.32 Christ, Lord, have mercy on em, 00:26:29.35\00:26:31.89 you delight us, you delight to show mercy. 00:26:31.92\00:26:34.69 Now Micah goes on, 00:26:34.72\00:26:36.06 "You will again have compassion on us, 00:26:36.09\00:26:37.93 you will tread our sins underfoot 00:26:37.96\00:26:40.06 and hurl our iniquities into the, 00:26:40.10\00:26:42.00 write it down, the depths of the sea." 00:26:42.03\00:26:47.60 God says, "I'll bury your sins at sea." 00:26:47.64\00:26:51.71 That little mountain lake where I grew up 00:26:51.74\00:26:53.07 as a missionary's kid in Japan, 00:26:53.11\00:26:54.91 there would be drownings, almost tragically every summer. 00:26:54.94\00:26:59.65 And I'll tell you what, 00:26:59.68\00:27:01.02 when you're a kid four years old, five years old, 00:27:01.05\00:27:03.52 that stuff is indelibly imprinted 00:27:03.55\00:27:05.35 on the hard disk of childhood memories. 00:27:05.39\00:27:07.79 I can still see that little, that little motor boat chugging 00:27:07.82\00:27:10.63 around the vast place in the lake 00:27:10.66\00:27:12.36 where they saw the victim. 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.00 I can see those authorities looking, 00:27:14.03\00:27:15.70 I can see them finally reaching into that little skiff 00:27:15.73\00:27:18.17 and pulling out grappling hooks and dropping those hooks 00:27:18.20\00:27:21.97 over the side to drag on the bottom of that lake 00:27:22.00\00:27:24.67 in hopes of finding that victim. 00:27:24.71\00:27:28.11 Here in Micah, God promises to bury our sins 00:27:28.14\00:27:31.21 at the bottom of the sea 00:27:31.25\00:27:32.58 and the only way they could ever again confront us, 00:27:32.61\00:27:36.28 is if we drop the grappling hooks out 00:27:36.32\00:27:38.65 over the side ourselves and look for that, 00:27:38.69\00:27:40.89 the corpse of that sin to pull back up 00:27:40.92\00:27:43.59 and stare at and mourn over and sob over 00:27:43.63\00:27:48.10 when God says, what're you doing girl? 00:27:48.13\00:27:50.33 I buried that already. 00:27:50.37\00:27:52.00 The devil does not want us to get this guys, 00:27:54.24\00:27:56.34 oh, he doesn't, this will set you free 00:27:56.37\00:27:58.54 if you get this picture of God today. 00:27:58.57\00:28:00.64 And the devil, he said, "No, I'm gonna keep it front of you, 00:28:00.68\00:28:02.54 I'm gonna rub your nose in it, I'm gonna rub your face in it, 00:28:02.58\00:28:04.91 every time you forget I'm back to remind you." 00:28:04.95\00:28:07.38 Now look, all of these stunning promises 00:28:10.69\00:28:14.66 are presupposed upon the reality 00:28:14.69\00:28:20.56 that we have earnestly with broken heart 00:28:20.60\00:28:24.57 taken that sin to Jesus and given it to him. 00:28:24.60\00:28:27.97 The promise is presupposed that that's what you've done. 00:28:28.00\00:28:30.07 God can't throw away what he doesn't have. 00:28:30.11\00:28:32.74 1 John 1:9, come on, don't you ever forget this, 00:28:32.77\00:28:34.78 the great shining diamond 00:28:34.81\00:28:36.34 in the New Testament near the end, 00:28:36.38\00:28:37.71 1 John 1:9, let's read this one out loud together. 00:28:37.75\00:28:40.48 "If we confess our sins, 00:28:40.52\00:28:43.89 he is faithful and just to forgive us 00:28:43.92\00:28:47.39 our sins and cleanse us, 00:28:47.42\00:28:50.06 purify us from all unrighteousness." 00:28:50.09\00:28:56.10 Every one of these promises 00:28:56.13\00:28:58.10 the stunning set that we've just gone through 00:28:58.13\00:29:00.54 is premised on the simple condition 00:29:00.57\00:29:03.37 that we confess and repent of our sin before God. 00:29:03.41\00:29:07.44 Bring it to me, bring it to me and see what I'll do with it. 00:29:07.48\00:29:11.15 Isaiah 1, we gotta go back to Isaiah, 00:29:11.18\00:29:12.71 jot this down, Isaiah 1:18, "'Come now, God says, 00:29:12.75\00:29:16.08 let us settle the matter', says the Lord.' 00:29:16.12\00:29:19.19 Though your sins are like scarlet, 00:29:19.22\00:29:21.42 they shall be as white as... 00:29:21.46\00:29:24.66 Hallelujah, got melted yesterday. 00:29:24.69\00:29:28.36 Isn't that something? 00:29:28.40\00:29:30.27 Quit laughing so soon, it'll be back. 00:29:30.30\00:29:32.07 Though your sins are like scarlet, 00:29:34.57\00:29:36.04 they shall be as white as snow, 00:29:36.07\00:29:37.41 thought they are red as crimson, 00:29:37.44\00:29:38.77 they shall be as wool. 00:29:38.81\00:29:40.81 Jesus says, "Oh, come on guys, please, I beg of you, 00:29:40.84\00:29:43.98 bring them to me, bring it to me, 00:29:44.01\00:29:45.58 I don't care what kind of sin it is, 00:29:45.61\00:29:46.95 I don't care what color of sin it is. 00:29:46.98\00:29:48.82 I will not only forgive you, I will wash you, 00:29:48.85\00:29:50.62 I will purify you, I will cleanse you 00:29:50.65\00:29:52.42 and then I'm going to bury that sin 00:29:52.45\00:29:53.79 in the depths of the sea, 00:29:53.82\00:29:55.16 I'm going to burn that sin off like the morning mist." 00:29:55.19\00:29:57.73 Gone, dissipated, vanished, 00:29:57.76\00:30:00.06 I will remember your sin no more, no more. 00:30:00.10\00:30:05.03 Just give it to me, let me have it. 00:30:05.07\00:30:08.20 And the New Testament barely comes to closing 00:30:10.01\00:30:14.64 when they quickly slip in 00:30:14.68\00:30:16.04 what we've just gotten in the Old Testament, 00:30:16.08\00:30:17.81 the New Testament says don't miss this, 00:30:17.85\00:30:19.18 two times in the Book of Hebrews, jot this down. 00:30:19.21\00:30:21.12 Hebrews 10:17, their, God speaking, 00:30:21.15\00:30:24.19 "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." 00:30:24.22\00:30:29.42 I ask you again... 00:30:31.19\00:30:32.53 does God have Alzheimer's. 00:30:35.16\00:30:39.13 I mean, what's up with this, guys? 00:30:39.17\00:30:40.50 What have we just read? 00:30:40.54\00:30:42.00 Severe case of divine amnesia at best. 00:30:45.74\00:30:49.04 In order to put these stunning promises to the test, 00:30:51.61\00:30:55.48 we've got to operationalize this cluster. 00:30:55.52\00:30:59.65 We need to operationalize it 00:30:59.69\00:31:01.06 with a red blooded human exhibit A, 00:31:01.09\00:31:03.99 all you're going to need is exhibit A, 00:31:04.03\00:31:05.76 trust me that's all you're going to need. 00:31:05.79\00:31:08.10 This one perhaps is a most stunning text of all 00:31:08.13\00:31:10.60 to set us up, 00:31:10.63\00:31:11.97 we need to consider four questions. 00:31:12.00\00:31:13.34 So here comes the four questions. 00:31:13.37\00:31:14.70 Question number one, 00:31:14.74\00:31:16.07 is it a sin to walk on your roof? 00:31:16.10\00:31:18.37 Yes or no?
