00:06:08.40\00:06:11.03 You're pregnant?" 00:06:11.07\00:06:12.40 And she says, "Yes, 00:06:12.43\00:06:13.97 I'm actually five months along." 00:06:14.04\00:06:16.74 And I tried to pretend that I didn't cry 00:06:16.81\00:06:19.34 but it just brought tears to my eyes 00:06:19.37\00:06:20.71 because you could tell the exact moment 00:06:20.78\00:06:23.04 where He writes there something in this world 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.18 that He can never not love. 00:06:25.21\00:06:27.78 No matter what happens, 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.25 He could never not love this person, 00:06:29.28\00:06:32.45 his life was changed forever. 00:06:32.49\00:06:33.86 And I started to think of how good God is, 00:06:33.89\00:06:36.32 and where He says in the Bible that 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.69 before He formed us in our mother's womb, 00:06:37.73\00:06:39.86 before time, He loved us. 00:06:39.89\00:06:42.63 And this God is one who knows all of our thoughts. 00:06:42.66\00:06:45.57 He knew from the beginning, our sins, 00:06:45.60\00:06:47.30 all of our evil things within us, 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.44 He knew this but still, before He formed us, 00:06:49.47\00:06:51.97 He loved us, 00:06:52.01\00:06:55.31 and yet still He loves us. 00:06:55.34\00:06:57.71 He sent His Son down for us, the sinners, the unclean, 00:06:57.75\00:07:03.45 the mar in this world in His creation, 00:07:03.52\00:07:05.55 the thing that went wrong, 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.96 and He still loves us. 00:07:07.99\00:07:10.86 So I wanted you to think about that right now, 00:07:10.89\00:07:12.66 as we sing our next song, 00:07:12.69\00:07:14.00 "How deep the Father's love for us," 00:07:14.03\00:07:15.60 that no matter what He will continue to love you. 00:07:15.63\00:07:19.20 No matter what your faults, He will continue to love you, 00:07:19.23\00:07:22.87 and I just want you to worship Him to the end. 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.44 So please come forward as we sing 00:07:24.47\00:07:25.81 "How deep the Father's love for us." 00:07:25.84\00:07:28.34 How deep the Father's love for us 00:07:36.08\00:07:42.26 How vast beyond all measure 00:07:42.29\00:07:47.40 That He should give His only Son 00:07:47.40\00:07:53.90 To make a wretch His treasure 00:07:53.94\00:07:59.74 How great the pain of searing loss 00:07:59.77\00:08:05.88 The Father turns His face away 00:08:05.91\00:08:11.15 As wounds which mar the chosen One 00:08:11.19\00:08:17.49 Bring many sons to glory. 00:08:17.56\00:08:24.43 Please come forward for prayer tonight. 00:08:24.47\00:08:26.33 Behold the Man. 00:08:36.85\00:08:38.78 Behold the Man upon a cross 00:08:38.81\00:08:44.72 My sin upon His shoulders 00:08:44.75\00:08:50.33 Ashamed I hear my mocking voice 00:08:50.36\00:08:56.00 Call out among the scoffers 00:08:56.03\00:09:01.70 It was my sin that held Him there 00:09:01.74\00:09:07.41 Until it was accomplished 00:09:07.44\00:09:13.21 His dying breath has brought me life 00:09:13.25\00:09:18.79 I know that it is finished 00:09:18.82\00:09:24.43 How many of you are happy that God sent His only Son 00:09:24.46\00:09:27.60 to just end, the end, to say, 00:09:27.66\00:09:30.37 "It is finished, to give us a chance at eternal life? 00:21:10.93\00:21:13.07 They just did a fine job, I'm so proud of them. 00:21:13.10\00:21:18.17 I recognize 00:21:18.21\00:21:21.11 that this morning subject 00:21:21.14\00:21:23.41 is gonna be painful for some of us who are here. 00:21:23.45\00:21:28.28 Simply because we cannot discuss 00:21:28.32\00:21:30.99 same sex marriage, 00:21:31.02\00:21:35.96 and not tap into the deep turmoil 00:21:35.99\00:21:40.20 and painful struggle 00:21:40.26\00:21:42.36 that is in the heart of the gay, 00:21:42.40\00:21:48.17 or the lesbian. 00:21:48.20\00:21:51.97 Our subject this morning, I really need you to hear this. 00:21:52.01\00:21:54.81 Our subject this morning is not, 00:21:54.84\00:21:57.01 does God love gays and lesbians? 00:21:57.08\00:21:59.58 But of course He does, He loves all His children. 00:21:59.61\00:22:02.38 Moreover, and I need you to hear this as well. 00:22:02.42\00:22:04.52 Moreover God, according to Holy Scripture is intensely, 00:22:04.55\00:22:08.99 intensely focused with deep compassion on those 00:22:09.02\00:22:14.83 who have been marginalized by society, 00:22:14.83\00:22:19.83 or pushed to the edge, and alienated by the church. 00:22:19.87\00:22:26.78 Once you put a human face to it, 00:22:26.84\00:22:30.01 an acquaintance, 00:22:30.05\00:22:32.28 a colleague, a neighbor, a roommate, a classmate, 00:22:32.31\00:22:36.02 once you put a face to it, 00:22:36.05\00:22:41.22 then those strong opinions are suddenly tempered, 00:22:41.26\00:22:46.96 aren't they? 00:22:47.00\00:22:49.76 Now you have somebody 00:22:49.80\00:22:52.67 that represents your deepest convictions. 00:22:52.70\00:22:57.34 You say, "What are you saying?" 00:22:57.37\00:22:58.71 Are you suggesting pastor, the truth is no longer truth? 00:22:58.74\00:23:02.71 I did not say that at all and you know I didn't. 00:23:02.74\00:23:07.85 But one should put the face of Jesus 00:23:07.88\00:23:10.92 on their struggle. 00:23:10.99\00:23:13.29 Truth becomes much more formidable 00:23:13.36\00:23:14.86 than we first thought 00:23:14.89\00:23:20.33 because the face of Jesus... 00:23:20.40\00:23:21.70 And by the way He is the one who said, "I, I'm the truth." 00:23:21.73\00:23:25.43 Isn't that right? I'm the truth. 00:23:25.47\00:23:27.67 Once you put the face of Jesus on it, 00:23:27.70\00:23:31.57 then truth comes garb with an uncomfortable... 00:23:31.61\00:23:36.34 Let him who is without sin cast the first stone proviso. 00:23:36.38\00:23:42.52 Suddenly, we all stand under divine judgment 00:23:42.55\00:23:46.15 and in the words of the disciples, 00:23:46.19\00:23:47.56 "Who then can stand." 00:23:47.62\00:23:49.12 But in the words of the gospel 00:23:49.16\00:23:50.49 "Whosoever believes in Him should not perish, 00:23:50.53\00:23:54.20 but have ever lasting life." 00:23:54.23\00:23:56.83 And so recognizing the Supreme Court's decision 00:23:56.90\00:23:59.30 regarding same sex marriage is gonna stir up 00:23:59.33\00:24:01.40 some uncomfortable 00:24:01.44\00:24:02.87 and painful emotions inside of us. 00:24:02.90\00:24:05.61 Let's quickly put the face of Jesus on our conversation. 00:24:05.64\00:24:08.94 Open your Bible with me please to Matthew 19. 00:24:08.98\00:24:12.48 Matthew 19 and while you're finding Matthew 19, 00:24:12.51\00:24:14.48 may I remind us all that on June 26, 00:24:14.52\00:24:17.62 the Supreme Court of the United States, 00:24:17.65\00:24:19.35 a deeply divided court by the way five to four, 00:24:19.39\00:24:22.96 handed down the greatly anticipated decision 00:24:22.99\00:24:25.33 entitled Obergefell v. Hodges. 00:24:25.36\00:24:29.63 I've read Justice Anthony Kennedy's 00:24:29.66\00:24:31.43 defense of the majority decision. 00:24:31.47\00:24:35.10 Here is the summation of the argument, 00:24:35.14\00:24:36.71 their argument. 00:24:36.77\00:24:38.11 I put his words on the screen for you. 00:24:38.14\00:24:39.87 "No union is more profound than marriage, 00:24:39.91\00:24:42.84 for it embodies the highest ideals of love, 00:24:42.88\00:24:46.55 fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. 00:24:46.58\00:24:50.65 In forming a marital union 00:24:50.69\00:24:52.35 two people become something greater than they once were. 00:24:52.39\00:24:56.79 As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, 00:24:56.83\00:24:59.33 marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. 00:24:59.36\00:25:02.83 It would misunderstand these..." 00:25:02.86\00:25:05.13 And I'm inserting the words "same sex" 00:25:05.17\00:25:07.14 because they have been 00:25:07.17\00:25:08.50 the focus of this entire decision. 00:25:08.54\00:25:12.31 "It would misunderstand these same sex men and women 00:25:12.34\00:25:15.01 to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. 00:25:15.04\00:25:18.95 Their plea is that they do respect it, 00:25:18.98\00:25:21.15 respect it so deeply 00:25:21.18\00:25:22.55 that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. 00:25:22.58\00:25:25.92 Their hope is not to be condemned 00:25:25.95\00:25:28.49 to live in loneliness, 00:25:28.52\00:25:29.86 excluded from 00:25:29.89\00:25:31.23 one of civilization's older institutions. 00:25:31.26\00:25:33.16 They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. 00:25:33.19\00:25:35.90 The Constitution grants them that right. 00:25:35.93\00:25:38.50 The judgment of the Court of Appeals 00:25:38.53\00:25:40.20 for the Sixth Circuit is reserved." 00:25:40.24\00:25:42.20 It had said, "Same sex laws forbidding same sex can stand." 00:25:42.24\00:25:47.54 The Supreme Court in that 00:25:47.58\00:25:48.91 one sentence reverses that decision. 00:25:48.94\00:25:51.48 "It is so ordered." 00:25:51.51\00:25:53.98 And the decision is published. 00:25:54.02\00:25:58.15 With this order, state laws forbidding same sex 00:25:58.19\00:26:01.92 were thus struck down. 00:26:01.96\00:26:05.16 And same sex marriage is now a protected fundamental right, 00:26:05.19\00:26:09.26 as Justice Anthony Kennedy kept repeating, 00:26:09.30\00:26:11.97 "Fundamental right in this land". 00:26:12.00\00:26:14.44 We know where the Supreme Court stands. 00:26:17.91\00:26:20.41 You already knew before you came. 00:26:20.48\00:26:23.21 Let's go to Jesus now, open your Bible to Matthew 19, 00:26:23.24\00:26:25.78 you maybe already found it, 00:26:25.81\00:26:27.22 let's pick it up right here in verse 3. 00:26:27.25\00:26:30.09 I'm in the NIV, 00:26:30.12\00:26:32.22 you have your Bible, let's go. 00:26:32.25\00:26:34.46 Matthew 19:3, "Some Pharisees came to Jesus to test him. 00:26:34.49\00:26:38.06 And they asked, 00:26:38.09\00:26:39.49 "Is it lawful for a man 00:26:39.53\00:26:41.93 to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" 00:26:41.96\00:26:46.37 Jesus replied, "Haven't you read, 00:26:46.40\00:26:48.94 that at the beginning 00:26:48.97\00:26:50.31 the Creator made them male and female..." 00:26:50.37\00:26:53.27 I hit the pause button right there. 00:26:53.34\00:26:54.68 Jesus says, "Listen, didn't you read the creation account?" 00:26:54.71\00:26:59.45 In fact, he pulls a line straight out of Genesis 1, 00:26:59.48\00:27:01.28 let's put it on the screen, 00:27:01.32\00:27:02.65 "So God created mankind in his own image, 00:27:02.68\00:27:05.22 in the image of God he created them, 00:27:05.25\00:27:06.99 male and female he created them." 00:27:07.02\00:27:09.62 Don't you know? Look it. 00:27:09.66\00:27:11.09 "Haven't you read 00:27:11.13\00:27:12.69 that the divine complementarity of the trinity, 00:27:12.73\00:27:15.43 let us make man, 00:27:15.46\00:27:17.50 was shaped into the human race from the beginning? 00:27:17.57\00:27:20.14 The same complementarity even as the trinity 00:27:20.17\00:27:22.90 compliments one another, 00:27:22.94\00:27:24.31 even so the human race is to compliment each other. 00:27:24.34\00:27:27.64 Haven't you read 00:27:27.68\00:27:30.05 that God did not make the male in the beginning 00:27:30.08\00:27:33.55 nor did He make them female in the beginning, 00:27:33.62\00:27:36.99 but because of that complementarity, 00:27:37.02\00:27:38.89 that differentness 00:27:38.92\00:27:40.36 that is still an unlikeness just like the trinity, 00:27:40.39\00:27:42.96 the human race was designed 00:27:42.99\00:27:44.59 and created to be in the image of God male and female." 00:27:44.63\00:27:51.53 Verse 4 again, "'Haven't you read,' 00:27:51.57\00:27:54.27 Jesus replied, 00:27:54.30\00:27:55.94 'that at the beginning the Creator 'made them 00:27:55.97\00:27:57.61 male and female. 00:27:57.64\00:27:58.97 Now verse 5, and said, quoting the creator, 00:27:59.01\00:28:01.78 'For this reason a man 00:28:01.81\00:28:03.71 will leave his father and mother 00:28:03.78\00:28:05.35 and be united to his wife, 00:28:05.38\00:28:06.75 and the two will become one flesh'?" 00:28:06.78\00:28:09.85 The two did not become male, the two did not become female. 00:28:09.88\00:28:13.72 The complementarity of male and female are joined together 00:28:13.79\00:28:16.62 in the institution of marriage 00:28:16.66\00:28:18.43 into the very unity or oneness of the trinity. 00:28:18.46\00:28:22.16 "Haven't you read the story?" 00:28:22.20\00:28:26.07 Verse 6, 00:28:26.10\00:28:27.84 "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 00:28:27.87\00:28:33.38 Therefore what God has joined together, 00:28:33.41\00:28:36.64 let no one separate." 00:28:36.68\00:28:38.58 And with that last line, 00:28:38.61\00:28:40.45 Jesus steps out of the creation narrative, 00:28:40.52\00:28:45.89 being the incarnate creator 00:28:45.92\00:28:48.46 Jesus adds a line to His own wedding homily, 00:28:48.49\00:28:53.16 He just quoted it, 00:28:53.19\00:28:54.50 "A man shall leave his father and his mother..." 00:28:54.56\00:28:57.33 And as the old King James says, 00:28:57.37\00:28:58.70 "And shall cleave to his wife 00:28:58.73\00:29:01.34 and the two shall become one flesh." 00:29:01.37\00:29:06.37 Oh, and by the way adding to my homily, 00:29:06.41\00:29:09.44 what God has put together, 00:29:09.48\00:29:12.51 let no one take asunder. 00:29:12.55\00:29:16.48 No man, no court. 00:29:16.52\00:29:22.16 Now you say, look it, look it. 00:29:22.19\00:29:27.13 For a court to presume you're wondering, 00:29:27.13\00:29:31.20 for a court to presume... 00:29:31.23\00:29:34.14 It was able to rewrite 00:29:34.17\00:29:35.50 the divine definition of marriage, 00:29:35.54\00:29:36.91 no matter how supreme that court would be. 00:29:36.94\00:29:39.74 Would be in the words of C. S. Lewis 00:29:39.77\00:29:41.11 patronizing nonsense, wouldn't it? 00:29:41.14\00:29:45.11 And on the decision of five to four to rewrite it 00:29:45.15\00:29:48.25 but hold on, hold on. 00:29:48.28\00:29:49.62 Let's not misunderstand the court. 00:29:49.65\00:29:52.92 The court is not claiming to overrule God. 00:29:52.95\00:29:57.53 It is not the Supreme Court's place to at all, 00:29:57.56\00:30:01.20 they recognize that, 00:30:01.23\00:30:02.56 rather Justice Kennedy's 00:30:02.60\00:30:04.30 written defense of the majority opinion 00:30:04.33\00:30:06.30 was based on the premise 00:30:06.33\00:30:08.07 that marriage is a fundamental human right 00:30:08.10\00:30:11.21 that cannot be denied to petitioners 00:30:11.24\00:30:14.58 who mutually seek its benefits, that's his point. 00:30:14.61\00:30:21.55 But I must admit, however... 00:30:21.58\00:30:24.15 As I've kind of brooded over this. 00:30:24.19\00:30:27.96 It was eye opening for me, 00:30:27.99\00:30:31.96 reading Kennedy, is how many times 00:30:31.99\00:30:34.56 he cited public opinion. 00:30:34.56\00:30:37.97 In one place he calls it this shift in public attitudes 00:30:38.00\00:30:41.74 as all of that is part of the rationale 00:30:41.77\00:30:43.97 for their decision for same sex marriage. 00:30:44.04\00:30:47.41 And it made me think... 00:30:47.44\00:30:49.11 Wait a minute. 00:30:49.14\00:30:50.51 "If the secular court 00:30:50.58\00:30:52.38 can rewrite the definition of God's gift of marriage 00:30:52.41\00:30:54.72 to the human race in the garden, 00:30:54.75\00:30:56.62 what could prevent them from one day 00:30:56.65\00:30:59.65 rewriting God's other gift to humanity in the garden 00:30:59.69\00:31:02.72 namely the Seventh-day Sabbath. 00:31:02.76\00:31:05.79 If the court can appeal to a shift 00:31:05.83\00:31:08.43 in public attitude this time, 00:31:08.46\00:31:11.00 could they not appeal to a shift 00:31:11.03\00:31:13.10 in public attitude the next time, 00:31:13.13\00:31:16.07 but of course. 00:31:16.10\00:31:17.57 And when six of the nine justices 00:31:17.61\00:31:19.27 are members of the church 00:31:19.31\00:31:20.64 they claims, "It has already overturned the Bible Sabbath." 00:31:20.68\00:31:27.18 I'm just saying you can get there from here. 00:31:27.22\00:31:32.69 Now Jesus is saying, 00:31:32.72\00:31:35.06 "What God has joined together in the beginning, 00:31:35.09\00:31:38.33 no man is to separate." 00:31:38.36\00:31:40.56 So here's the question, where does a church stand, 00:31:40.60\00:31:41.93 our church? 00:31:41.96\00:31:43.30 Let me put it on the screen for you. 00:31:43.33\00:31:44.67 Seventh-day Adventist Church has an official statement 00:31:44.70\00:31:46.47 on marriage, these are the words... 00:31:46.50\00:31:47.97 by the way these quotations, 00:31:48.00\00:31:49.34 every quotation here is in your bulletin, 00:31:49.37\00:31:51.67 in that study guide, nothing to fill in, 00:31:51.71\00:31:53.14 just take the quotations home. 00:31:53.17\00:31:54.51 All right, Here we go. 00:31:54.54\00:31:55.88 Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:31:55.91\00:31:57.28 "Marriage was divinely established in Eden 00:31:57.31\00:31:58.65 and affirmed by Jesus Christ 00:31:58.68\00:32:00.08 to be both monogamous and heterosexual, 00:32:00.12\00:32:02.92 a lifelong union of loving companionship 00:32:02.95\00:32:05.22 between a man and a woman. 00:32:05.25\00:32:07.16 In the culmination of His creative activity, 00:32:07.19\00:32:08.99 God fashioned humankind as male and female 00:32:09.02\00:32:11.43 in His own image 00:32:11.46\00:32:12.79 and He instituted marriage, 00:32:12.83\00:32:14.40 a covenant-based union of the two genders 00:32:14.46\00:32:17.03 physically, emotionally, and spiritually 00:32:17.07\00:32:19.73 spoken of in Scripture as 'one flesh.'" 00:32:19.77\00:32:25.11 Coincidentally, just yesterday 00:32:25.14\00:32:29.28 after months of prayerful study and research, 00:32:29.31\00:32:33.05 the theological seminar right here on campus 00:32:33.08\00:32:35.62 voted a document entitled 00:32:35.65\00:32:37.89 biblical view on homosexual practice 00:32:37.92\00:32:39.72 and pastoral care, 00:32:39.75\00:32:41.36 that includes this definition of marriage, 00:32:41.39\00:32:44.49 theological seminary. 00:32:44.53\00:32:45.86 Some of our professors are sitting right here. 00:32:45.89\00:32:47.76 Put it on the screen please. 00:32:47.83\00:32:49.66 Here is their statement, 00:32:49.70\00:32:51.03 "A marriage between a man and a woman 00:32:51.07\00:32:53.27 is the Edenic model for all time. 00:32:53.30\00:32:56.24 This unique heterosexual marital form 00:32:56.27\00:32:59.11 involving the sexual union of a man and a woman 00:32:59.14\00:33:02.18 constitutes the divine paradigm, 00:33:02.21\00:33:04.31 the 'Creation order,' 00:33:04.35\00:33:05.68 for humanity from the beginning. 00:33:05.71\00:33:07.42 This paradigm means 00:33:07.45\00:33:08.98 that marriage cannot consist of the sexual union 00:33:09.02\00:33:11.92 between a man and another man or a woman and another woman. 00:33:11.95\00:33:16.22 This creation pattern of marriage 00:33:16.26\00:33:17.96 between a man and a woman 00:33:17.99\00:33:19.86 remains the norm throughout Scripture." 00:33:19.89\00:33:23.43 It's for that reason that when the Supreme Court 00:33:23.47\00:33:25.20 rendered this decision, 00:33:25.23\00:33:26.80 the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventist 00:33:26.84\00:33:29.10 released this statement... 00:33:29.14\00:33:30.47 I promise this is the last one, put it on the screen. 00:33:30.51\00:33:33.17 North American Division, 00:33:33.21\00:33:34.54 "The Seventh-day Adventist church 00:33:34.58\00:33:35.91 acknowledges the U.S. Supreme Court's decision 00:33:35.94\00:33:37.55 on Friday June 26, 00:33:37.61\00:33:39.65 legalizing same-sex marriage across the United States. 00:33:39.68\00:33:43.12 Even with the Supreme Court's decision, 00:33:43.15\00:33:45.32 the Adventist Church maintains its fundamental belief 00:33:45.35\00:33:48.52 that marriage was divinely established in Eden 00:33:48.56\00:33:51.93 and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union 00:33:51.96\00:33:54.96 between a man and a woman. 00:33:55.00\00:33:57.20 While the church respects the opinions of those 00:33:57.23\00:33:59.57 who may differ, 00:33:59.60\00:34:01.00 it will continue to teach 00:34:01.04\00:34:02.37 and promote its biblically based belief of marriage 00:34:02.40\00:34:05.17 between a man and a woman. 00:34:05.21\00:34:07.38 The Seventh-day Adventist Church believes that 00:34:07.41\00:34:09.11 all people, regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation, 00:34:09.14\00:34:13.62 are God's children 00:34:13.65\00:34:14.98 and should be treated with civility, compassion, 00:34:15.02\00:34:18.12 and Christ-like love." 00:34:18.15\00:34:21.22 I was kind of proud of my church 00:34:21.26\00:34:22.86 for publicly going on record that way. 00:34:22.89\00:34:27.50 Jesus Himself... 00:34:27.50\00:34:28.83 You have to admit at least here in Matthew 19 00:34:28.86\00:34:30.33 takes a rather unequivocal stance, 00:34:30.37\00:34:32.27 wouldn't you say? 00:34:32.30\00:34:34.40 Look at verse 4 again, this is... 00:34:34.44\00:34:35.87 Get a run at this next verse. 00:34:35.90\00:34:37.57 Verse 4, "Haven't you read," Jesus replied, 00:34:37.61\00:34:39.71 "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them 00:34:39.74\00:34:41.74 male and female,' and said, 00:34:41.78\00:34:43.11 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother 00:34:43.14\00:34:45.31 and be united to his wife, 00:34:45.35\00:34:47.65 and the two will become one flesh." 00:34:47.68\00:34:50.19 So verse 6, Jesus goes on, 00:34:50.25\00:34:52.69 "They are no longer two, but one flesh. 00:34:52.72\00:34:55.89 Therefore what God has joined together, 00:34:55.92\00:34:58.63 let no one separate." 00:34:58.66\00:35:00.33 Now the story goes on, 00:35:00.36\00:35:02.33 the Pharisees are ready, we'll put it on the screen. 00:35:02.36\00:35:04.30 Verse 7, "'Why then,' the Pharisees asked, 00:35:04.33\00:35:06.94 'did Moses command that a man give his wife 00:35:06.97\00:35:09.77 a certificate of divorce and send her away?" 00:35:09.80\00:35:12.84 Jesus replied, 00:35:12.87\00:35:14.21 'Moses permitted you to divorce your wives 00:35:14.28\00:35:17.81 because your hearts were hard. 00:35:17.85\00:35:20.02 But it was not this way from the beginning. 00:35:20.05\00:35:22.02 I tell you, verse 9, 00:35:22.05\00:35:23.59 that anyone who divorce his wife, 00:35:23.62\00:35:26.05 except for sexual immorality, 00:35:26.09\00:35:28.09 and marries another woman commits adultery.'" 00:35:28.12\00:35:32.49 Wow, how do we get 00:35:32.53\00:35:34.40 from heterosexual marriage to adultery? 00:35:34.46\00:35:36.63 What's going on here? 00:35:36.67\00:35:38.83 Jesus being Jesus, an equal opportunity, 00:35:38.87\00:35:41.34 afflicter of the comfortable. 00:35:41.37\00:35:42.70 Let him who is without sin. 00:35:47.64\00:35:50.75 Go ahead, you cast the first stone. 00:35:50.81\00:35:55.68 Russell Moore 00:35:55.72\00:35:57.29 wrote an op-ed piece for the Washington Post the day 00:35:57.35\00:35:59.85 that the Supreme Court's decision 00:35:59.89\00:36:01.52 was released to the public. 00:36:01.56\00:36:03.59 I've read it several times 00:36:03.66\00:36:04.99 and I want to tell you something, 00:36:05.03\00:36:06.36 it has an optimistic spirit to it 00:36:06.39\00:36:08.63 and I get so blessed 00:36:08.66\00:36:10.00 and I've given you the link, so you can check it out later. 00:36:10.07\00:36:12.23 Let me tell you who Russell Moore is. 00:36:12.27\00:36:13.64 He's president of the Ethics 00:36:13.67\00:36:15.00 and Religious Liberty Commission 00:36:15.04\00:36:16.37 of the Southern Baptist Convention. 00:36:16.40\00:36:19.04 Without quoting him extensively, 00:36:19.07\00:36:20.41 I don't want to do that. 00:36:20.48\00:36:21.81 Let me just run by you 00:36:21.84\00:36:23.18 seven reasons for optimism, okay. 00:36:23.21\00:36:24.55 I'm just gonna fly these by, this is Russell Moore, 00:36:24.58\00:36:26.38 you can read the entire op-ed piece. 00:36:26.41\00:36:28.95 Reason number one, the church should not panic. 00:36:28.98\00:36:32.85 He says, hey, listen guys, the Supreme Court is powerful, 00:36:32.89\00:36:35.16 but it's not powerful enough to put Jesus back in the grave. 00:36:35.19\00:36:39.26 Oh, that's good. 00:36:39.29\00:36:41.43 Number two, 00:36:41.46\00:36:42.80 the gospel doesn't need family values to flourish. 00:36:42.83\00:36:46.50 It flourished under Paul's preaching 00:36:46.53\00:36:48.57 with Ephesus, and Corinth, and Rome. 00:36:48.60\00:36:51.07 And, oh, my, they hugely rewrote the divine idea 00:36:51.11\00:36:55.14 for marriage but it is okay, the gospel can still flourish. 00:36:55.18\00:36:58.55 Number three, the church needs to articulate 00:36:58.58\00:37:01.52 what we believe about marriage. 00:37:01.55\00:37:03.85 Marriage is a symbol of the union with Christ 00:37:03.92\00:37:06.29 and His earth children, it's beautiful. 00:37:06.32\00:37:11.16 Number four. 00:37:11.19\00:37:12.53 Now I'm gonna let Him give number four 00:37:12.56\00:37:15.16 and not try to summon up, 00:37:15.20\00:37:16.53 I'll put it on the screen for you. 00:37:16.56\00:37:17.90 This is number four, 00:37:17.93\00:37:19.27 "We Christians must embody a gospel marriage culture. 00:37:19.30\00:37:23.10 We have done a poor job of that in the past. 00:37:23.14\00:37:26.47 Too many of our marriages have been ravaged by divorce." 00:37:26.51\00:37:31.41 Here is this church, 00:37:34.85\00:37:36.42 the collective church in the United States of America 00:37:36.45\00:37:39.45 vocally vociferous 00:37:39.49\00:37:41.46 in its condemnation of homosexual sin. 00:37:41.49\00:37:44.49 And all the while the church is harboring within there 00:37:44.53\00:37:47.66 with the strange silence, 00:37:47.73\00:37:51.37 the heterosexual sin of divorce at the drop of a hat. 00:37:51.40\00:37:58.07 I think the word for that is hypocrisy. 00:37:58.11\00:38:00.51 Russell Moore goes on, 00:38:03.78\00:38:05.81 "Too often we've neglected church discipline 00:38:05.85\00:38:08.18 in the cases of those 00:38:08.22\00:38:09.55 who have unrepentantly destroyed their marriages." 00:38:09.58\00:38:13.32 Just collective silence. 00:38:13.39\00:38:15.96 Now we keep reading here, 00:38:15.99\00:38:17.36 "Permanent, stable marriages with families 00:38:17.39\00:38:19.59 with both a mother and a father 00:38:19.63\00:38:21.16 may well make us seem freakish in 21st-century culture. 00:38:21.20\00:38:25.83 We should not fear that. I love this now. 00:38:25.87\00:38:28.00 We believe stranger things than that. 00:38:28.04\00:38:30.01 We believe that a previously dead man is alive, 00:38:30.04\00:38:31.74 and will show up 00:38:31.77\00:38:33.11 in the Eastern skies on a horse. 00:38:33.14\00:38:34.48 I'm so proud of Washington Post for letting him publish this. 00:38:38.28\00:38:42.68 He's just saying, guys, 00:38:42.72\00:38:44.09 this is not the end of the world yet. 00:38:44.12\00:38:46.76 Follow me, keep reading, 00:38:46.79\00:38:48.12 "We also believe that the gospel 00:38:48.16\00:38:49.82 can forgive sinners like us 00:38:49.86\00:38:52.29 and make us sons and daughters. 00:38:52.33\00:38:54.20 Let's embrace the sort of freakishness that saves." 00:38:54.20\00:38:58.73 Yeah, it's good. 00:38:58.77\00:39:00.37 Number five he says you want to be optimistic 00:39:00.40\00:39:02.20 if you write about marriage, 00:39:02.24\00:39:03.57 people will be disappointed in getting what they want. 00:39:03.64\00:39:06.94 Just you wait. 00:39:07.01\00:39:09.18 Number six, 00:39:09.21\00:39:10.68 "We must stand with conviction and with kindness, 00:39:10.71\00:39:12.45 with truth, and with grace." 00:39:12.48\00:39:14.28 Russell's words on the screen. 00:39:14.35\00:39:15.78 Russell Moore, "We must hold our views 00:39:15.82\00:39:17.85 and love those who hate us for them. 00:39:17.89\00:39:20.22 We must not only speak Christian truths, 00:39:20.29\00:39:22.32 we must speak with a Christian accent." 00:39:22.36\00:39:25.23 Oh, I like that. 00:39:25.26\00:39:28.10 "We must say what Jesus has revealed, 00:39:28.13\00:39:30.10 and we must say those things the way Jesus does with mercy 00:39:30.17\00:39:33.54 and with an invitation to live." 00:39:33.57\00:39:35.47 And finally number seven, 00:39:35.50\00:39:37.81 we need to be on the wrong side of history. 00:39:37.84\00:39:41.21 His words again, 00:39:41.24\00:39:42.58 "This is not time for fear or outrage or politicizing. 00:39:42.61\00:39:46.82 We see that we are strangers and exiles in American culture. 00:39:46.85\00:39:50.29 We are on the wrong side of history, 00:39:50.32\00:39:52.22 just like we started. 00:39:52.25\00:39:54.46 We should have been all along." 00:39:54.49\00:39:59.16 So where does Jesus stand? 00:39:59.19\00:40:03.23 Verse 10, 00:40:03.26\00:40:06.40 "The disciples said to Jesus, 'Oh, you have raised a bar 00:40:06.43\00:40:09.54 on divorce so high, Lord Jesus.'" 00:40:09.57\00:40:12.61 "The disciples said to Jesus, 'If this is the situation, 00:40:12.64\00:40:15.14 verse 10, between a husband and wife, 00:40:15.18\00:40:16.81 it is better not to marry.'" 00:40:16.85\00:40:19.58 We just won't get married. 00:40:19.61\00:40:21.55 Jesus shoots back verse 11, "Jesus replied, 00:40:21.58\00:40:25.15 'Not everyone can accept this word, 00:40:25.19\00:40:27.86 but only those to whom it has been given. 00:40:27.89\00:40:30.19 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, 00:40:30.23\00:40:34.13 and there are eunuchs 00:40:34.20\00:40:35.50 who have been made eunuchs by others 00:40:35.53\00:40:38.47 and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs 00:40:38.50\00:40:41.50 for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. 00:40:41.54\00:40:44.24 The one who can accept this should accept it.'" 00:40:44.27\00:40:50.01 Can you believe it? 00:40:50.08\00:40:51.41 I mean, Jesus starts out defining marriage 00:40:51.45\00:40:53.95 in creation language as a union between a man and a woman, 00:40:53.98\00:40:56.52 then He gets to divorce 00:40:56.55\00:40:57.89 and it's very high bar for divorce. 00:40:57.92\00:41:00.76 And now He's talking about eunuchs. 00:41:00.79\00:41:03.02 What is up with this? 00:41:03.06\00:41:06.53 But actually 00:41:06.56\00:41:08.23 what Jesus has just said about eunuchs is profound 00:41:08.26\00:41:12.73 for a nation that by its own Supreme Court 00:41:12.77\00:41:15.20 has been assured 00:41:15.24\00:41:19.47 into a collective conversation, 00:41:19.51\00:41:22.28 what Jesus has just said about eunuchs. 00:41:22.31\00:41:25.95 I have a friend 00:41:25.98\00:41:28.75 who self identified 00:41:28.78\00:41:31.62 just a few months ago as transgender. 00:41:31.65\00:41:37.73 And as I've listened to his, 00:41:37.76\00:41:40.76 now her story of a struggle that began in early childhood 00:41:40.80\00:41:46.13 and has dogged her life well into adulthood, 00:41:46.17\00:41:49.37 she shared with me 00:41:49.40\00:41:52.21 the testimony of trusting God through it all. 00:41:52.24\00:41:57.28 In fact, she is the one who drew my attention 00:41:57.31\00:41:59.25 to these words of Jesus, words, 00:41:59.28\00:42:01.35 that for her offer such quite salves to her soul. 00:42:01.38\00:42:07.46 I mean, you think about what Jesus just said. 00:42:07.49\00:42:10.26 According to Him you can be born 00:42:10.33\00:42:12.46 outside the norm of heterosexual orientation, 00:42:12.49\00:42:17.60 and it's okay. 00:42:17.63\00:42:19.50 That would be someone born unique 00:42:19.53\00:42:21.60 according to him as well, 00:42:21.64\00:42:22.97 you can be lead by someone 00:42:23.00\00:42:24.81 outside the norm of heterosexual orientation 00:42:24.84\00:42:27.91 through abuse, through rape, through initiation, 00:42:27.94\00:42:30.91 somebody led you out, that's okay. 00:42:30.95\00:42:35.28 And number three according to Jesus, 00:42:35.32\00:42:37.62 you can choose to live your life 00:42:37.65\00:42:39.25 outside the norm of heterosexual orientation, 00:42:39.29\00:42:42.79 which as Jesus describes it is the choice to honor God 00:42:42.82\00:42:47.60 and live as a eunuch, 00:42:47.60\00:42:49.03 meaning one who chooses not to act out 00:42:49.06\00:42:51.57 his or her orientation and sexuality 00:42:51.60\00:42:54.80 outside the divine parameters of marriage 00:42:54.84\00:42:57.47 between a man and a woman. 00:42:57.54\00:42:59.47 Jesus is clearly talking about celibacy. 00:42:59.51\00:43:05.55 My friends, Steven Payne loaned me a book by Justin Lee, 00:43:05.58\00:43:08.92 title of the book, Torn: 00:43:08.95\00:43:10.59 Rescuing the Gospel 00:43:10.62\00:43:11.95 from the Gays-vs. -Christians Debate. 00:43:11.99\00:43:13.86 Listen to Justin's struggle, 00:43:13.89\00:43:15.22 I put his words you have them as well, 00:43:15.26\00:43:17.43 put it on the screen. 00:43:17.46\00:43:18.93 Justin writing, I've talked to many single Christians, 00:43:18.96\00:43:23.13 this is campus with thousands of single Christians, 00:43:23.16\00:43:26.74 just a nature of education. 00:43:26.80\00:43:28.50 "I've talked to many single Christians 00:43:28.54\00:43:30.27 who find the church a challenging place 00:43:30.31\00:43:32.27 to be at times. 00:43:32.31\00:43:33.64 But for single gay..." 00:43:33.68\00:43:35.41 Now that's his emphasis, "For single gay Christians, 00:43:35.44\00:43:38.71 there are even bigger hurdles. 00:43:38.75\00:43:40.62 A 45-year old single straight woman 00:43:40.68\00:43:42.52 may feel overlooked or misunderstood at her church, 00:43:42.55\00:43:45.65 but she doesn't have to worry about being condemned 00:43:45.69\00:43:47.52 for being straight. 00:43:47.56\00:43:48.99 Single gay Christians 00:43:49.02\00:43:50.69 face the difficulties of singleness 00:43:50.73\00:43:52.86 alongside potential condemnation 00:43:52.89\00:43:55.33 for their orientation. 00:43:55.36\00:43:57.10 And while all single people face challenges in our culture, 00:43:57.13\00:44:00.94 the challenges faced by people who are single by choice 00:44:00.97\00:44:04.24 or because they haven't yet found the right person 00:44:04.31\00:44:07.38 are different from the challenges faced 00:44:07.41\00:44:09.64 by those who eagerly desire companionship 00:44:09.68\00:44:12.68 but believe God requires celibacy 00:44:12.71\00:44:17.99 even if they should fall in love in the future." 00:44:18.02\00:44:23.06 Ladies and gentlemen, come on, 00:44:23.09\00:44:25.99 there are those among us 00:44:26.03\00:44:27.96 who self identify as gay or lesbian, 00:44:27.96\00:44:30.13 who follow Jesus with all their heart, 00:44:30.17\00:44:32.33 but struggle with the celibacy that they recognize 00:44:32.37\00:44:34.94 He is calling them to embrace. 00:44:34.97\00:44:38.01 It can be a desperate struggle 00:44:38.04\00:44:43.01 as you're about to find in an email, 00:44:43.04\00:44:45.51 I'm gonna read to you. 00:44:45.55\00:44:48.38 It can be a desperate struggle which is why... 00:44:48.42\00:44:52.19 Now come on, come on, which is why the church, 00:44:52.22\00:44:54.82 the community of Jesus 00:44:54.86\00:44:57.59 must be as a New Testament calls us 00:44:57.63\00:44:59.53 the household of God, the family of God. 00:44:59.56\00:45:03.97 The church must be a place of refuge, a place of safety, 00:45:04.00\00:45:08.17 a place of healing for sinners, heterosexual and homosexual. 00:45:08.20\00:45:14.01 The church must be a place of compassionate, 00:45:14.08\00:45:16.75 confidentiality, 00:45:16.78\00:45:20.52 where social media is not entered 00:45:20.55\00:45:22.78 into its strategy to love all. 00:45:22.82\00:45:27.16 You got that? 00:45:27.19\00:45:30.63 It must be a place where authenticity is valued 00:45:30.66\00:45:33.23 and where accountability is understood. 00:45:33.26\00:45:38.00 The church, 00:45:38.03\00:45:39.80 the 20-page document 00:45:39.83\00:45:41.47 that the seminary just voted yesterday, 00:45:41.50\00:45:43.51 this biblical study and statement 00:45:43.57\00:45:45.04 on homosexuality reserves 00:45:45.07\00:45:47.08 its last six pages 00:45:47.14\00:45:49.48 for a pastoral appeal to the church. 00:45:49.51\00:45:55.22 And I've pulled from those six these lines. 00:45:55.25\00:45:59.69 On the screen, "While being faithful 00:45:59.72\00:46:01.29 to biblical teaching about homosexuality, 00:46:01.32\00:46:04.26 we must also seek earnestly to understand 00:46:04.29\00:46:07.60 and empathize with the struggles 00:46:07.66\00:46:09.86 and challenges that face those 00:46:09.90\00:46:11.57 who struggle with sexual immorality... 00:46:11.60\00:46:15.90 All persons, including practicing homosexuals, 00:46:15.94\00:46:19.11 should be made to feel welcome to attend our churches..." 00:46:19.14\00:46:22.44 Hold up, hit the pause button right there 00:46:22.48\00:46:24.78 that's not the complete sentence, 00:46:24.81\00:46:26.82 but I need you to get the first half of the sentence. 00:46:26.85\00:46:30.09 "All persons, including practicing homosexuals, 00:46:30.12\00:46:33.96 should be made 00:46:33.99\00:46:37.23 to feel welcome to attend our churches." 00:46:37.26\00:46:42.10 As John just said a moment ago, 00:46:42.13\00:46:44.13 if the church can't be that place, 00:46:44.17\00:46:46.94 where do you go?" 00:46:47.00\00:46:49.97 Now the sentence goes on, 00:46:50.01\00:46:52.01 "While non-practicing gay persons 00:46:52.04\00:46:57.21 should be welcomed into membership 00:46:57.25\00:46:59.48 and church office." 00:46:59.51\00:47:01.02 It doesn't matter how you identify yourself, 00:47:01.05\00:47:04.12 you are welcome in membership and in leadership, 00:47:04.15\00:47:07.82 that's what they're saying. 00:47:07.86\00:47:10.29 "All should receive spiritual care 00:47:10.36\00:47:12.09 from the church." 00:47:12.13\00:47:13.46 I love Galatians 6. 00:47:13.53\00:47:14.83 "Bear one another's burdens 00:47:14.86\00:47:16.23 and so fulfilled the law of Christ. 00:47:16.26\00:47:18.50 Love your neighbor as yourself," 00:47:18.53\00:47:20.37 that's the church. 00:47:20.44\00:47:21.80 "All should receive spiritual care 00:47:21.84\00:47:23.17 from the church. 00:47:23.20\00:47:24.54 We stand against any antipathy or hostility toward homosexuals 00:47:24.57\00:47:28.04 as well as any cultural biases 00:47:28.08\00:47:30.45 that fuel a lack of Christ-like love for them... 00:47:30.48\00:47:33.92 We strongly affirm that homosexual persons 00:47:33.95\00:47:37.29 have a place in the Seventh-day Adventist Church." 00:47:37.32\00:47:40.89 Amen. 00:47:40.96\00:47:42.62 And to that I say, we say, amen. 00:47:42.66\00:47:47.23 So after writing this sermon, I get an email from a student. 00:47:53.03\00:47:56.20 I asked his permission, when I wrote him back. 00:48:02.68\00:48:05.71 Can I share this? 00:48:05.75\00:48:07.08 He said, "You may." 00:48:07.15\00:48:09.22 Not gonna share all of it, few lines, Pastor Nelson, 00:48:09.25\00:48:14.32 "Ever since I saw the topic for this week's sermon at PMC 00:48:14.36\00:48:16.99 there is something going on my heart. 00:48:17.06\00:48:19.53 There is something I feel I should at least tell you 00:48:19.56\00:48:21.43 even though I have no idea 00:48:21.46\00:48:22.80 which direction you're gonna go with the sermon 00:48:22.83\00:48:24.17 or if you'll even read this by then. 00:48:24.20\00:48:26.53 For my whole life, 00:48:26.57\00:48:27.90 I have struggled in dealing with sexuality. 00:48:27.94\00:48:31.97 I very much believe that God's words says 00:48:32.01\00:48:33.88 that marriage is to be between a man and a woman. 00:48:33.91\00:48:36.95 I very much believe that God has called us 00:48:36.98\00:48:38.68 to surrender every part of our lives to Him, 00:48:38.71\00:48:40.42 including our sexuality. 00:48:40.45\00:48:41.98 The problem that weighs on my heart though 00:48:42.02\00:48:44.09 is that whenever the church talks about sexuality, 00:48:44.12\00:48:47.06 it rarely goes beyond this. 00:48:47.09\00:48:49.29 I hear sermons about how we need 00:48:49.32\00:48:50.66 to stay strong in scripture, 00:48:50.73\00:48:52.06 in spite of what society does, 00:48:52.09\00:48:53.43 and if the church needs to do the loving thing 00:48:53.46\00:48:55.16 and call sin by its right name. 00:48:55.20\00:48:57.53 I wish that the church would be quick to listen 00:48:57.57\00:49:01.24 and slow to speak. 00:49:01.27\00:49:04.77 Whenever a person opens about their sexuality, 00:49:04.81\00:49:07.14 I wish people would know that they don't have the right, 00:49:07.21\00:49:10.01 they don't have to jump right into the topic of sin, 00:49:10.08\00:49:12.25 chances are there is a lot of pain 00:49:12.28\00:49:14.72 in their story. 00:49:14.75\00:49:16.58 It seems that people have the impression of telling them 00:49:16.62\00:49:18.59 about overcoming sin is like the cure all. 00:49:18.62\00:49:21.72 There is definitely a need for talking about it 00:49:21.76\00:49:23.56 when we go against God, 00:49:23.59\00:49:24.93 we heard ourselves and other people 00:49:24.96\00:49:26.59 but may be, just may be 00:49:26.63\00:49:28.30 most of that pain has come not from their sins, 00:49:28.33\00:49:30.67 but from the church. 00:49:30.70\00:49:32.40 Maybe what they desperately need to hear 00:49:32.43\00:49:33.94 before anything else 00:49:33.97\00:49:35.30 is not how same sex, sex is sin, 00:49:35.34\00:49:37.61 but how Jesus can heal their shattered heart. 00:49:37.64\00:49:43.21 I wish the church would realize and acknowledge 00:49:43.24\00:49:45.18 how bad it has been. 00:49:45.21\00:49:48.88 And not try to justify to water down 00:49:48.92\00:49:50.72 the church's failures as if they're minimum. 00:49:50.79\00:49:53.12 It would be kind of crazy if the church 00:49:53.15\00:49:54.76 even apologize for its failure in this area, 00:49:54.79\00:49:58.43 and in the email I did. 00:49:58.46\00:50:01.93 I also wish the church would realize 00:50:01.96\00:50:03.87 that one of the greatest things they can possibly give someone 00:50:03.93\00:50:06.57 is a safe place to open up. 00:50:06.60\00:50:08.67 I spend most of my entire life terrified 00:50:08.70\00:50:11.17 of ever telling anyone and as a result, 00:50:11.21\00:50:13.74 I dealt with this by myself. 00:50:13.78\00:50:17.11 I finally got so tired of crying myself to sleep 00:50:17.15\00:50:20.98 and all the shame 00:50:21.02\00:50:22.35 that I finally open up to someone 00:50:22.38\00:50:24.15 having even a few people to open up 00:50:24.19\00:50:25.72 to is meant so much 00:50:25.75\00:50:27.16 and it is almost impossible to overestimate 00:50:27.22\00:50:30.93 the importance and value of it. 00:50:30.96\00:50:32.59 Just hearing someone tell me 00:50:32.63\00:50:34.23 that I am not disgusting has meant so much to me. 00:50:34.30\00:50:38.27 I was no longer by myself." 00:50:38.30\00:50:45.07 One more line, 00:50:45.11\00:50:47.41 "One thing that would help in creating a safe place 00:50:47.44\00:50:50.91 to open up is for people in the church to listen first, 00:50:50.95\00:50:54.28 just staying quiet, 00:50:54.32\00:50:55.95 and listening to a person story is so valuable." 00:50:55.98\00:50:59.42 And then he quotes Ministry of Healing, 00:50:59.45\00:51:01.16 page 143 and he puts it right here, 00:51:01.19\00:51:03.63 "Christ's method alone 00:51:03.66\00:51:05.06 will give true success in reaching the people. 00:51:05.09\00:51:07.60 The Savior mingled with men and women as one 00:51:07.60\00:51:09.33 who desired their good. 00:51:09.36\00:51:10.73 He showed His sympathy for them, 00:51:10.77\00:51:12.10 He ministered to their needs, and He won their confidence. 00:51:12.13\00:51:14.34 Then He bade them, 'Follow Me.'" 00:51:14.37\00:51:16.77 "Applying this would be like 00:51:16.81\00:51:18.21 people in the church mingling with those 00:51:18.24\00:51:20.48 who are LGBTQ, listening to their stories, 00:51:20.54\00:51:23.81 loving them intensely, 00:51:23.85\00:51:25.18 and fighting for them to be treated with dignity, 00:51:25.21\00:51:27.68 helping them to know 00:51:27.72\00:51:29.05 that they will be their front regardless. 00:51:29.08\00:51:31.25 And then finally talk about Jesus words, ''Follow me''. 00:51:31.29\00:51:36.62 There are many things 00:51:36.69\00:51:38.03 that weigh on my heart in this area 00:51:38.06\00:51:39.39 although it would be hard to write it all down. 00:51:39.43\00:51:41.96 I felt that it, I at least needed to say this. 00:51:42.00\00:51:46.80 You know what? 00:51:46.87\00:51:49.17 He doesn't need to say anymore, does he? 00:51:49.20\00:51:52.57 Church. Church. 00:51:52.61\00:51:56.31 The same Jesus, 00:52:02.02\00:52:05.22 who spoke these words in Matthew 19, 00:52:05.25\00:52:07.39 is the one who speaking of mingling, 00:52:07.46\00:52:11.53 hung around at well one hot noon day, 00:52:11.56\00:52:15.23 just hoping she'd come and she did. 00:52:15.26\00:52:18.07 This woman who had five men, and the one she is with now, 00:52:18.10\00:52:21.94 sex but no marriage. 00:52:21.97\00:52:23.87 As he comes up to that well, "You're a Jew, 00:52:27.24\00:52:29.51 I'm a Samaritan, you're talking to me? 00:52:29.54\00:52:31.28 I mean, please." 00:52:31.31\00:52:33.72 But Jesus sees in that broken heart 00:52:33.78\00:52:36.79 that has been desperately trying to quench her thirst 00:52:36.85\00:52:40.99 that she has gone to the wrong well. 00:52:41.02\00:52:46.26 And Jesus, 00:52:46.29\00:52:48.23 in a moment of gentle compassion 00:52:48.26\00:52:51.40 turns that woman into a grace dispenser 00:52:51.43\00:52:54.40 for the rest of her life. 00:52:54.44\00:52:56.34 Philip Yancey tells the story about him 00:53:00.51\00:53:04.31 and Henri Nouwen the great writer. 00:53:04.35\00:53:06.92 They were actually talking about the woman at the well. 00:53:06.95\00:53:11.65 I want to read to you 00:53:11.69\00:53:13.02 just these lines from that moment. 00:53:13.05\00:53:16.49 That scene of Jesus and the Samaritan woman 00:53:16.52\00:53:17.86 came up During a day, 00:53:17.89\00:53:19.23 I spent with the author Henri Nouwen, 00:53:19.26\00:53:20.60 a great author by the way, 00:53:20.63\00:53:21.96 a psychologist, pastor, and dead. 00:53:22.00\00:53:27.90 The time I spent with him in his home in Toronto. 00:53:27.94\00:53:30.77 Now, here we go, he had just returned 00:53:30.81\00:53:32.61 from San Francisco, 00:53:32.64\00:53:34.48 where he spent a week in an AIDS clinic, 00:53:34.51\00:53:36.58 visiting patients who in the days 00:53:36.61\00:53:37.95 before antiretroviral drugs faced a certain 00:53:37.98\00:53:41.72 and agonizing death. 00:53:41.75\00:53:43.18 Now I told Yancey, "Look, I'm a pastor 00:53:43.22\00:53:46.49 and it's part of my job I listen to people stories, 00:53:46.52\00:53:49.22 and so I went up and down the ward asking the patients, 00:53:49.26\00:53:51.93 most of them young men if they wanted to talk. 00:53:51.96\00:53:56.16 Now it went on to say 00:53:56.20\00:53:57.53 that his prayers changed after that week. 00:53:57.57\00:54:00.27 How could a man of prayer is changed after that week?
