and his love. 00:17:03.85\00:17:11.79 August 6, 1945, 00:17:37.42\00:17:39.45 faced in the deadly glow of a single atomic bomb 00:17:39.49\00:17:41.62 over Hiroshima, Japan, 00:17:41.66\00:17:43.12 the world find itself assured into the atomic age. 00:17:43.16\00:17:46.49 Four years later deep behind the Iron Curtain, 00:17:46.53\00:17:48.80 the Soviet Union conducts their first test 00:17:48.83\00:17:50.67 of an atomic weapon, 00:17:50.73\00:17:52.07 sparking in arms raise 00:17:52.10\00:17:53.44 the like of which the world has never seen. 00:17:53.47\00:17:56.27 Apprehensive scientists and intellectuals 00:17:56.30\00:17:58.27 debate the ominous fate of the planet. 00:17:58.31\00:18:00.51 Three days before his death on April 18, 1955, 00:18:00.54\00:18:03.68 American scientist Albert Einstein 00:18:03.71\00:18:05.38 joins British philosopher Bertrand Russell 00:18:05.41\00:18:07.58 in signing the Russell-Einstein Manifesto. 00:18:07.65\00:18:10.22 The prospect for the human race is somber beyond all precedent. 00:18:10.25\00:18:13.62 Mankind are faced with a clear-cut alternative: 00:18:13.69\00:18:16.39 either we shall all perish, or we shall have to acquire 00:18:16.42\00:18:18.96 some slight degree of common sense. 00:18:18.99\00:18:21.46 Soon after in the village of Pugwash, Nova Scotia, 00:18:21.50\00:18:24.50 22 scientists including 10 Nobel laureates 00:18:24.53\00:18:27.44 gathered to ponder 00:18:27.47\00:18:28.80 how to avert the Cold War's threat of nuclear obliteration 00:18:28.84\00:18:32.01 and forge a plan of global peace. 00:18:32.04\00:18:34.98 And half a century later the quest still goes on. 00:18:35.01\00:18:37.71 Call it The Pugwash Factor 00:18:37.75\00:18:39.48 because if those who know do not act, 00:18:39.51\00:18:41.62 the planet is doomed. 00:18:41.65\00:18:43.15 And the reason we're calling it 00:18:47.49\00:18:48.82 The Pugwash Factor 00:18:48.86\00:18:50.73 is because of the underlying premise, 00:18:50.76\00:18:52.56 when those intellectuals, those scientists, 00:18:52.59\00:18:55.50 philosophers gathered in that obscure little 00:18:55.53\00:18:59.07 Nova Scotian village name Pugwash. 00:18:59.10\00:19:03.20 The premise for their gathering, 00:19:03.24\00:19:04.57 and by the way, 00:19:04.61\00:19:05.94 the Pugwash conferences are still taking place, 00:19:05.97\00:19:07.31 annual conferences, 00:19:07.34\00:19:08.68 bright thinkers from around the globe. 00:19:08.71\00:19:10.08 The premise was and is 00:19:10.11\00:19:11.65 the world is on the edge 00:19:11.68\00:19:14.35 and we must do something. 00:19:14.38\00:19:18.95 If you turn your bulletin over, 00:19:18.99\00:19:20.49 I need to say a word about 00:19:20.52\00:19:21.86 the last two pieces of this short, 00:19:21.89\00:19:23.96 mini series of Pugwash Factor. 00:19:23.99\00:19:26.26 You see on the back there is line up for this fall. 00:19:26.29\00:19:28.43 I want to draw your attention to the... 00:19:28.46\00:19:31.20 two weeks, three weeks from today, 00:19:31.23\00:19:35.30 "The Pugwash Factor: 00:19:35.34\00:19:36.71 How to Discern the Pope's Agenda for America". 00:19:36.74\00:19:38.84 This would be 48 hours 00:19:38.87\00:19:40.58 after the pontiff 00:19:40.61\00:19:43.45 would be standing in the well of the United States Congress 00:19:43.48\00:19:45.78 addressing the political leadership of the nation, 00:19:45.81\00:19:48.52 the president and the entire country, 00:19:48.55\00:19:50.89 never happen before in history. 00:19:50.92\00:19:52.89 So how can we discern, what's his agenda, what's up? 00:19:52.92\00:19:57.53 And then the one after it. 00:19:57.56\00:19:59.43 Wants you to keep that one in mind as well, 00:19:59.46\00:20:02.06 how to respond to the Supreme Court's 00:20:02.10\00:20:03.83 same-sex marriage decision. 00:20:03.87\00:20:06.37 It's a big deal this summer. 00:20:06.40\00:20:08.04 How does a Christian respond? 00:20:08.07\00:20:09.40 I mean, what do we say, I mean, what's up? 00:20:09.44\00:20:12.91 I'll be, be there for these two, the last two. 00:20:12.94\00:20:16.48 Living in a world on the edge, how do we live? 00:20:16.51\00:20:20.08 How then shall we live? 00:20:20.12\00:20:24.35 Today, it's a part of the Pugwash Factor, 00:20:24.39\00:20:27.02 I want to pray with you and then plunge into the story. 00:20:27.06\00:20:30.09 I love what Doug Chuck just say, 00:20:30.13\00:20:32.03 I love to tell the story, it's so, that's why we're here. 00:20:32.06\00:20:36.50 I want to go to the part of the story. 00:20:36.53\00:20:38.20 But first let's pray, 00:20:38.23\00:20:39.60 "Dear God, 00:20:39.63\00:20:40.97 the Pugwash Factor living bright minds, 00:20:41.00\00:20:44.07 this is not, this is not rocket science, 00:20:44.14\00:20:48.01 bright minds know, 00:20:48.04\00:20:50.81 we know, 00:20:50.88\00:20:52.51 so how then shall we live given the times. 00:20:52.55\00:20:56.72 Charles just saying it, I love, I love to tell the story as we, 00:20:56.75\00:21:00.56 as we go to that story, 00:21:00.59\00:21:05.06 ignited within us, 00:21:05.09\00:21:06.70 so help us to know how to respond, 00:21:06.73\00:21:09.53 to live out that story, we pray in Christ name, amen. 00:21:09.56\00:21:14.04 You remember the Greek classic Homer, 00:21:14.10\00:21:17.61 you remember Homer's Iliad, 00:21:17.64\00:21:19.31 and maybe took literature in high school, 00:21:19.34\00:21:20.74 you had to read that big tome. 00:21:20.78\00:21:23.08 Describing one of the, 00:21:23.11\00:21:24.45 one of the heroes in his dramatic narrative, 00:21:24.48\00:21:26.98 he, these are the words were used to describe him, 00:21:27.02\00:21:30.05 he was a friend to man and he lived in a house 00:21:30.09\00:21:36.46 by the side of the road. 00:21:36.49\00:21:38.33 I like that. 00:21:38.36\00:21:39.69 He was a friend of mine and he lived in a house 00:21:39.73\00:21:41.26 by the side of the road. 00:21:41.30\00:21:42.63 And the reason I like it because for me all right, 00:21:42.66\00:21:44.80 maybe not for you but for me, 00:21:44.83\00:21:46.90 it epitomizes who Jesus was and is. 00:21:46.97\00:21:51.04 He was a friend to man, He was a friend to people. 00:21:51.07\00:21:54.34 Look He didn't live in a house, He didn't have a house, says, 00:21:54.38\00:21:56.18 foxes have dens, birds have nest, 00:21:56.21\00:21:58.65 son of man have nowhere to lay my head. 00:21:58.68\00:22:00.95 He didn't have a house I understand that but He, 00:22:00.98\00:22:02.75 He lived out, He was a friend to the human race. 00:22:02.78\00:22:08.82 Elaine Roulette, 00:22:08.86\00:22:10.23 she is the founder of my mother's house 00:22:10.26\00:22:11.59 in New York. 00:22:11.63\00:22:12.96 Somebody to came to her once and ask, 00:22:12.99\00:22:14.30 how do you work with the poor? 00:22:14.36\00:22:16.13 To which she replied, you know, 00:22:16.16\00:22:18.57 you share your life with the poor. 00:22:18.60\00:22:22.97 Let me live in a house by the side of the road 00:22:23.00\00:22:25.74 and be a friend to man. 00:22:25.77\00:22:29.04 The American poet Sam Walter Foss, 00:22:29.08\00:22:33.42 19th century, 00:22:33.48\00:22:35.35 sees this line from Homer, turned into his personal credo, 00:22:35.38\00:22:38.82 and I have his poem, it's a five stanza poem, 00:22:38.85\00:22:40.72 I'm not gonna read the whole poem to you. 00:22:40.76\00:22:42.09 But let me read, let me read stanza two 00:22:42.12\00:22:43.69 and I must slip in stanza three, 00:22:43.73\00:22:45.46 listen to this, 00:22:45.49\00:22:47.46 "Let me live in a house by the side of the road, 00:22:47.50\00:22:50.40 where the race of men go by. 00:22:50.43\00:22:53.87 The men who are good and the men who are bad, 00:22:53.90\00:22:55.87 as good and as bad as I. 00:22:55.90\00:22:58.51 I would not sit in the scorner's seat, 00:22:58.54\00:23:00.78 or hurl the cynic's ban. 00:23:00.81\00:23:03.68 Let me live in a house by the side of the road 00:23:03.75\00:23:05.88 and be a friend to man. 00:23:05.91\00:23:09.42 I see from my house by the side of the road, 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.22 by the side of the highway of life, 00:23:11.25\00:23:14.16 the men who press with the ardor of hope, 00:23:14.19\00:23:15.89 the men who are faint with the strife. 00:23:15.92\00:23:18.16 But I turn not away 00:23:18.19\00:23:19.53 from their smiles nor their tears, 00:23:19.56\00:23:22.00 both parts of an infinite plan. 00:23:22.03\00:23:25.43 Let me live in a house by the side of the road 00:23:25.47\00:23:27.77 and be a friend to man." 00:23:27.80\00:23:30.47 I like that 00:23:30.51\00:23:32.31 because it's just like Jesus, isn't it? 00:23:32.34\00:23:36.48 By the way when you talk about Jesus 00:23:36.51\00:23:38.65 and this idea 00:23:38.68\00:23:40.02 that we're kind of wrestling 00:23:40.08\00:23:41.42 through, we just started last Sabbath, 00:23:41.45\00:23:42.78 we're gonna, 00:23:42.82\00:23:44.15 this thing will just take us right through the season. 00:23:44.19\00:23:45.55 But when you talk about Jesus and the gospel 00:23:45.59\00:23:48.46 and the gospel is a good news. 00:23:48.49\00:23:50.39 There is a critical distinction that you need to get, 00:23:50.43\00:23:53.09 I need to get this right here at the outset and that is, 00:23:53.13\00:23:56.13 listen, the gospel is not salvation. 00:23:56.16\00:24:00.27 It's not the gospel. 00:24:00.34\00:24:01.67 The gospel is not forgiveness of sin. 00:24:01.70\00:24:05.11 The gospel is not peace of mind, 00:24:05.14\00:24:06.47 it's not grace, it's not even divine love. 00:24:06.51\00:24:08.84 The good news of the gospel is a person and His name Jesus, 00:24:08.88\00:24:12.75 that's the gospel. 00:24:12.78\00:24:14.75 Now that's really critical 00:24:14.78\00:24:16.12 because when Jesus comes to us as He did last Sabbath, 00:24:16.15\00:24:18.52 was it's Mark 16:15, it says, "I want you to go, 00:24:18.55\00:24:21.29 go into all the world and share the gospel, 00:24:21.32\00:24:23.83 share the good news with every creature." 00:24:23.86\00:24:26.29 We need to understand 00:24:26.33\00:24:27.66 that, that command to go is Jesus is essentially saying, 00:24:27.73\00:24:30.33 "Hey, go and share me, share me with the world. 00:24:30.37\00:24:36.30 Tell them how you relate to me, 00:24:36.34\00:24:38.17 tell them I'm your... tell them I'm your savior, 00:24:38.21\00:24:40.44 tell them I'm your forever friend. 00:24:40.48\00:24:42.58 That's the, that's what I want you to share, 00:24:42.61\00:24:45.25 the gospel, the good news of the gospel 00:24:45.28\00:24:47.58 is Christ Himself. 00:24:47.62\00:24:49.75 In fact, on the eve of His crucifixion, 00:24:49.78\00:24:51.29 what does Jesus say? 00:24:51.32\00:24:52.85 "I'm, I'm the way, 00:24:52.89\00:24:56.22 the truth and the life." 00:24:56.26\00:24:59.39 Jesus said, "Look, I'm the laden hunger, 00:24:59.43\00:25:03.10 I'm the undefined thirst, 00:25:03.13\00:25:06.27 I'm the secret longing 00:25:06.30\00:25:08.44 within every man, woman and child. 00:25:08.47\00:25:11.87 I'm the God shaped vacuum in every human heart. 00:25:11.91\00:25:15.31 I'm the gospel. 00:25:15.34\00:25:17.15 He is the good news. 00:25:17.18\00:25:19.85 We got to get that, otherwise it's not good news, 00:25:19.88\00:25:22.88 it's not good news, I'm not gonna share it. 00:25:22.92\00:25:25.09 I'm not gonna share unless it's good news. 00:25:25.12\00:25:27.69 And the good news is, it's Jesus. 00:25:27.72\00:25:30.36 And what's better news than that, 00:25:30.43\00:25:31.76 He's always been the good news by the way. 00:25:31.79\00:25:33.13 I want to go to a story now. 00:25:33.16\00:25:34.46 Thank you, Charles, I love to tell the story. 00:25:34.50\00:25:35.83 Let's go to that story, the story of Jesus. 00:25:35.86\00:25:38.47 In a particular story 00:25:38.50\00:25:40.10 and I think you even like the story Matthew 9, 00:25:40.14\00:25:42.44 Matthew 9, 00:25:42.47\00:25:45.27 I'm gonna be in NIV and you, 00:25:45.31\00:25:48.14 whatever your tablet or phone or Bible, 00:25:48.18\00:25:50.31 I hope it's a Bible, come on, you're not being embarrassed 00:25:50.35\00:25:52.15 to bring a Bible to this church, 00:25:52.18\00:25:53.68 bring your Bible. 00:25:53.72\00:25:55.18 Don't have a Bible, pull the pew Bible out 00:25:55.22\00:25:56.55 in front of you. 00:25:56.58\00:25:57.92 It's page number here somewhere, page 654. 00:25:57.95\00:26:01.09 I love the story, it's one of my favorites 00:26:01.12\00:26:04.06 because, you know, they're having a party, 00:26:04.09\00:26:05.43 it's party time, let the party begin. 00:26:05.46\00:26:08.93 And all my, oh, this is an opulent house. 00:26:08.96\00:26:12.17 Somebody who owns this house is obviously pretty wealthy. 00:26:12.20\00:26:15.94 And, boy, they are driving up. 00:26:15.97\00:26:18.24 They are driving up, they are driving up 00:26:18.27\00:26:20.18 in their stretch limos. 00:26:20.21\00:26:22.71 You ever seen, when you go to Delaware, 00:26:22.74\00:26:24.08 you know, all those stretch limos 00:26:24.15\00:26:25.48 when you get to Delaware. 00:26:25.51\00:26:26.85 You know, I tell you the secret about stretch limos. 00:26:26.88\00:26:28.22 Stretch limos are rented for people who are important 00:26:28.25\00:26:32.55 and by people who want to look important, 00:26:32.59\00:26:36.39 stretch limos. 00:26:36.42\00:26:38.03 So these guys have all rented their own stretch limos, 00:26:38.06\00:26:40.10 because they want be important, 00:26:40.13\00:26:41.43 they're crawling out of that vehicle, 00:26:41.46\00:26:44.13 rumple tuxedoes on 00:26:44.17\00:26:46.40 and a pasty gaudy girl 00:26:46.43\00:26:48.80 hanging on their arms, it's party time 00:26:48.84\00:26:51.01 and I'm telling you the owner of this house 00:26:51.04\00:26:52.71 has invited all his buddies. 00:26:52.74\00:26:55.68 The guest of honor, you're gonna love this party. 00:26:55.71\00:27:00.55 So they're all here, they're here, 00:27:00.58\00:27:01.92 the limos up and down the block. 00:27:01.95\00:27:04.12 Where's the guest? 00:27:04.15\00:27:05.49 Oh, here he comes now 00:27:05.52\00:27:06.99 in old beat up dodge van. 00:27:07.02\00:27:12.16 Doors open and they come crawling out, 00:27:12.19\00:27:14.03 Jesus sent His disciples. 00:27:14.10\00:27:15.93 And Matthew is so excited 00:27:15.96\00:27:17.57 to have them in his house that the... 00:27:17.60\00:27:19.80 let the party starts 00:27:19.83\00:27:21.17 and he comes running out with his little iPhone 00:27:21.20\00:27:22.84 and he's just flashing, flashing no selfies, 00:27:22.87\00:27:24.81 he just, this is my guest of honor. 00:27:24.84\00:27:28.81 I love the story. 00:27:28.84\00:27:31.11 Let's read it, come on, come on, come on. 00:27:31.15\00:27:32.98 Matthew 9:9, 00:27:33.01\00:27:35.72 oh, here is the little story about how Matthew, 00:27:35.75\00:27:37.95 why Matthew is throwing this party, Verse 9, 00:27:37.99\00:27:40.96 "As Jesus went from there, 00:27:40.99\00:27:42.32 he saw a man named Matthew 00:27:42.36\00:27:44.49 sitting at the tax collector's booth." 00:27:44.53\00:27:47.50 They hated tax collectors and Jesus said, 00:27:47.50\00:27:50.23 red letters yo, you, 'Follow me,' 00:27:50.27\00:27:55.24 and Matthew got up and followed Him, 00:27:55.27\00:27:56.81 Jesus said, I did want you in my inner circle. 00:27:56.87\00:27:59.34 Come on, boy, let's go. 00:27:59.37\00:28:01.78 Matthew is so, so excited, 00:28:01.81\00:28:03.91 he's planning this party, verse 10. 00:28:03.98\00:28:05.48 "While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, 00:28:05.51\00:28:09.28 many tax collectors..." 00:28:09.32\00:28:11.09 Do you see the words out, come on to my party, big time. 00:28:11.12\00:28:14.72 "Many time tax collectors 00:28:14.76\00:28:16.19 and sinners came and ate with him." 00:28:16.22\00:28:17.69 By the way the, you know, the King James says 00:28:17.73\00:28:19.36 many publicans and sinners came. 00:28:19.39\00:28:21.70 But that is not republicans, 00:28:21.73\00:28:23.97 that's publicans, they came. 00:28:24.00\00:28:27.24 There're lot of republicans in the news these days, 00:28:27.27\00:28:29.17 so you got to just throw that in. 00:28:29.20\00:28:31.64 So while Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, 00:28:31.67\00:28:33.88 many tax collectors and sinners came 00:28:33.91\00:28:35.71 and ate with Him and His disciples and when... 00:28:35.74\00:28:39.41 Look at this, Pharisees, when the Pharisees saw this, 00:28:39.45\00:28:42.45 do you think the Pharisees would be caught dead, 00:28:42.48\00:28:44.92 in this unclean place 00:28:44.95\00:28:46.42 with that dog of a tax collector 00:28:46.45\00:28:48.46 you're kidding, they're not in the house. 00:28:48.49\00:28:50.56 So where are they? 00:28:50.63\00:28:51.96 Oh, party poopers, 00:28:51.99\00:28:53.33 they're right outside the window, can't stay away. 00:28:53.36\00:28:55.26 They're outside the window and they... 00:28:55.30\00:28:58.67 they're trying to get 00:28:58.70\00:29:00.10 the attention of Jesus' disciples, 00:29:00.17\00:29:01.50 they got a question. 00:29:01.54\00:29:02.87 Here it is, 00:29:02.90\00:29:04.24 "When the Pharisees saw, verse 11, 00:29:04.27\00:29:06.34 saw this, they asked his disciples, yo, 00:29:06.37\00:29:09.94 'Why does your teacher eat 00:29:09.98\00:29:11.71 with tax collectors and sinners?" 00:29:11.75\00:29:14.75 By the way, I love that. 00:29:14.78\00:29:16.12 I've just put brackets all around this 00:29:16.15\00:29:17.95 because this, this little line here, 00:29:17.99\00:29:21.42 this is the gospel, right here? 00:29:21.46\00:29:23.32 This is the gospel. 00:29:23.36\00:29:24.99 He eats with tax collectors and sinners, hug you and me. 00:29:25.03\00:29:29.10 Behold I stand at the door at... 00:29:29.13\00:29:32.00 I knock if any woman, if any man hears my voice, 00:29:32.03\00:29:34.34 I'm in, we're having... we're having supper together. 00:29:34.37\00:29:37.51 He eats with tax collectors and sinners, 00:29:37.54\00:29:40.18 that's why it's the good news. 00:29:40.21\00:29:44.98 Why does your teacher eat 00:29:45.01\00:29:46.72 with tax collectors and sinners, and Jesus? 00:29:46.75\00:29:49.35 Isn't that something, Jesus is just like your mother. 00:29:49.38\00:29:52.05 I mean, you can be having a conversation, 00:29:52.09\00:29:53.46 mother's over here talking to somebody 00:29:53.49\00:29:54.82 and you're badmouthing over here 00:29:54.86\00:29:56.66 and what does she do, 00:29:56.73\00:29:58.06 she is talking here but listen there. 00:29:58.09\00:30:01.10 Hush your mouth, boy. 00:30:01.13\00:30:03.47 It's exactly what happened Jesus is talking here 00:30:03.53\00:30:06.03 listening to the window 00:30:06.07\00:30:08.17 and on hearing this Jesus said, verse 12, 00:30:08.20\00:30:11.14 red letters now. 00:30:11.17\00:30:12.71 I love this, 00:30:12.74\00:30:14.08 "It is not the healthy who need a doctor," 00:30:14.14\00:30:18.11 come on, 00:30:18.15\00:30:19.88 the healthy don't need a doctor, 00:30:19.91\00:30:21.25 "it's the sick." 00:30:21.28\00:30:22.62 Verse 13, "But go and learn these Pharisees, 00:30:22.65\00:30:25.39 learn what this means, 'I, God's speaking, 00:30:25.42\00:30:27.66 I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' 00:30:27.69\00:30:31.06 For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners." 00:30:31.09\00:30:35.50 Some of your translation say but sinners to repentance. 00:30:35.53\00:30:39.67 Hey, it doesn't get any better than that. 00:30:39.70\00:30:42.37 I haven't come to call righteous, 00:30:42.40\00:30:43.84 I came, I came to call the sinners. 00:30:43.87\00:30:47.41 That's why Jesus 00:30:47.44\00:30:48.78 is the very personification of the good news 00:30:48.81\00:30:51.21 because He had a heart for sinners, 00:30:51.25\00:30:52.65 He just, He's a friend, 00:30:52.68\00:30:54.85 He was a friend of sinners through and through. 00:30:54.88\00:30:58.95 I mean, you can be a Samaritan woman, 00:30:58.99\00:31:00.56 you can be living with your fifth man 00:31:00.59\00:31:02.19 and when he sits down beside you his heart is just, 00:31:02.22\00:31:04.43 his heart is just longing for your friendship. 00:31:04.46\00:31:08.16 You can be the baddest of the bad 00:31:08.20\00:31:09.53 in the little town of Jericho ripping everybody off 00:31:09.56\00:31:11.23 but Jesus says, 00:31:11.27\00:31:12.60 "Hey, boy, I'm going to your house for dinner." 00:31:12.63\00:31:14.37 He just love sinners. 00:31:14.40\00:31:16.34 Hey, by the way 00:31:16.37\00:31:17.71 he was an equal opportunity lover of sinners 00:31:17.74\00:31:20.44 because you could be the most hypocritical 00:31:20.48\00:31:24.51 and critical Pharisee in the whole village. 00:31:24.55\00:31:29.75 And He's gonna be sitting on your table, 00:31:29.78\00:31:31.82 aching for your heart as well. 00:31:31.85\00:31:34.66 That's Jesus for you. 00:31:34.69\00:31:37.13 "I have come to call," Jesus speaking, 00:31:37.19\00:31:40.26 "I have come to call sinners to repentance." 00:31:40.30\00:31:44.30 By the way I need to ask you what kind of sinners, 00:31:44.33\00:31:47.90 what kind of sinners? 00:31:47.94\00:31:50.87 I don't see any limitations here? 00:31:50.91\00:31:52.24 Do you see any kind of like caveats? 00:31:52.27\00:31:54.94 No, apparently, apparently it's just all sinners, 00:31:54.98\00:31:57.28 if you're a heterosexual sinner. 00:31:57.31\00:32:00.15 No, no, are you a homosexual sinner? 00:32:00.22\00:32:03.12 I gave you. 00:32:03.15\00:32:05.95 Apparently 00:32:05.99\00:32:07.36 you can be an ethical sinner or an unethical sinner. 00:32:07.39\00:32:10.23 You can be an alcoholic sinner or a nonalcoholic sinner. 00:32:10.26\00:32:17.03 You can be a democrat sinner or republican sinner 00:32:17.07\00:32:19.73 or an independent sinner. 00:32:19.77\00:32:24.61 You can be an addicted sinner or a non addicted sinner. 00:32:24.64\00:32:27.81 You can be an incarcerated sinner 00:32:27.84\00:32:29.78 or a respectable sinner. 00:32:29.81\00:32:32.55 You can be a young sinner, you can be an old sinner. 00:32:32.58\00:32:34.52 You can be a white sinner, a black sinner, 00:32:34.55\00:32:36.18 a brown sinner, a yellow sinner. 00:32:36.22\00:32:38.22 You can be a Christian sinner, you can be a Muslim sinner, 00:32:38.25\00:32:40.82 you can be an atheist sinner, 00:32:40.86\00:32:42.36 you can even be an Adventist sinner. 00:32:42.39\00:32:46.09 I came to call sinners. 00:32:46.13\00:32:49.13 That's why He is the good news of the gospel. 00:32:49.16\00:32:55.24 Oh, we must not forget this, if it's not good news, 00:32:55.27\00:32:57.07 why am I gonna share with anybody. 00:32:57.14\00:32:58.71 If it's not good news to me, 00:32:58.74\00:33:00.31 why would I ever want to share it? 00:33:00.38\00:33:02.21 I don't want to share that. 00:33:02.24\00:33:03.75 The good news of the gospel is a person, 00:33:03.78\00:33:07.42 which means you're gonna share the gospel, 00:33:07.45\00:33:08.78 you share Jesus. 00:33:08.82\00:33:10.39 Now the question is, how do I share Jesus? 00:33:10.42\00:33:15.19 Just as Jesus did you do, by mingling. 00:33:15.22\00:33:21.66 You must become an equal opportunity mingler 00:33:21.70\00:33:26.70 with everybody just like Jesus. 00:33:26.74\00:33:29.30 Jim Cymbala, his great book "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire" 00:33:29.34\00:33:32.21 put the words on the screen for you. 00:33:32.24\00:33:33.84 "Christians often hesitate to reach out 00:33:33.88\00:33:36.08 to those who are different. 00:33:36.11\00:33:37.95 They want God to clean the fish before they catch them." 00:33:37.98\00:33:42.98 God, I'm not gonna catch this fish, 00:33:43.02\00:33:44.35 look, ooh-huh. 00:33:44.39\00:33:45.99 Clean them up, God, then I'll catch them for you. 00:33:46.02\00:33:48.96 What's crazy about that? 00:33:48.99\00:33:52.13 If someone's gold ring 00:33:52.16\00:33:53.50 is attached to an unusual body part, 00:33:53.56\00:33:56.93 if the person doesn't smell the best, 00:33:57.00\00:33:59.10 or if the skin color is not the same, 00:33:59.13\00:34:00.94 Christians tend to hesitate. 00:34:00.97\00:34:03.41 But, but think for a moment Cymbala writing about God 00:34:03.44\00:34:06.61 reaching out to us. 00:34:06.68\00:34:08.18 If ever there was a 'reach,' that was it: 00:34:08.21\00:34:10.98 the holy, pure Deity extending himself to us 00:34:11.01\00:34:13.45 who are soiled, evil-hearted, unholy." 00:34:13.52\00:34:16.35 God could have said, you know what, 00:34:16.38\00:34:17.72 'You're so different from me, you are so distasteful, 00:34:17.75\00:34:19.95 I would really rather not get too close to you.' 00:34:19.99\00:34:23.76 He could have said that, but He didn't say that. 00:34:23.83\00:34:27.60 "It was our very differentness that drew His hand of love. 00:34:27.66\00:34:31.57 Jesus didn't just speak the healing word to lepers 00:34:31.60\00:34:33.90 from a distance of thirty yards. 00:34:33.94\00:34:36.20 He touched them." 00:34:36.24\00:34:40.44 He was a friend of sinners, 00:34:40.48\00:34:43.01 tax collectors, prostitutes, 00:34:43.04\00:34:46.88 you name it, all sinners. 00:34:46.92\00:34:50.55 He mingled among us. 00:34:50.59\00:34:53.32 Ellen White powerfully captured his modus operandi 00:34:53.36\00:34:57.59 with the sentence or two 00:34:57.63\00:34:58.96 that I need to put on the screen. 00:34:58.99\00:35:00.63 It's just a kind of brood over the sentence with me. 00:35:00.66\00:35:03.97 "Christ's method alone will give true success 00:35:04.00\00:35:06.67 in reaching the people. 00:35:06.74\00:35:08.10 His method alone. 00:35:08.14\00:35:11.64 Don't need any other method, this is it. 00:35:11.67\00:35:14.28 What did He do? 00:35:14.31\00:35:15.64 The Savior mingled, there it is, 00:35:15.68\00:35:17.15 the Savior mingled with men and women 00:35:17.18\00:35:19.18 as one who desired their good. 00:35:19.21\00:35:21.65 He showed His sympathy for them, 00:35:21.68\00:35:23.12 He ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. 00:35:23.15\00:35:26.86 Then, then He bade them, 'Follow Me.'" 00:35:26.89\00:35:32.39 Hey, I want you to know how simple 00:35:32.43\00:35:33.83 it is to walk in Jesus' footsteps. 00:35:33.90\00:35:35.86 Let me share with you now 00:35:35.90\00:35:37.23 and grab your study guide please. 00:35:37.27\00:35:38.60 I strategic steps. 00:36:37.16\00:36:40.20 Step number one, 00:36:40.23\00:36:41.53 "You mingle among people as one 00:36:41.56\00:36:44.03 who wants the very best for them." 00:36:44.07\00:36:47.50 You mingle, you mingle, you mingle. 00:36:47.54\00:36:49.14 How do you mingle? 00:36:49.17\00:36:51.01 You show up where people already are, 00:36:51.04\00:36:52.41 that's how you mingle. 00:36:52.44\00:36:53.78 You show up where people already are. 00:36:53.84\00:36:55.51 On a campus like this, in a village like ours, 00:36:55.54\00:36:57.85 you show up at sporting events. 00:36:57.88\00:36:59.25 Sporting events 00:36:59.28\00:37:00.68 are the great conveners of Americans 00:37:00.75\00:37:02.68 in the third millennium. 00:37:02.72\00:37:04.05 You want be around people, go to a sporting event. 00:37:04.12\00:37:06.82 In our little village we got the Shamrocks 00:37:06.89\00:37:08.66 and, boy, you see the signs we bleed green Berrien Springs, 00:37:08.69\00:37:12.49 go rocks, Shamrocks, see, 00:37:12.53\00:37:16.43 you show up that's where the people are. 00:37:16.46\00:37:18.93 You say, I'm just not in the sports, Dwight, 00:37:18.97\00:37:21.00 "Okay, that's fine." 00:37:21.04\00:37:22.37 Go to the local concerts in the high school, 00:37:22.40\00:37:24.11 elementary school, 00:37:24.14\00:37:25.47 concert, band concerts, choir concerts, 00:37:25.51\00:37:27.48 go where music takes place. 00:37:27.51\00:37:30.15 You mingle with people. 00:37:30.18\00:37:32.85 Hey, here is another way. 00:37:32.88\00:37:34.52 When you go into the cafeteria to eat, 00:37:34.55\00:37:36.82 you go to a table uninvited and you just sit down. 00:37:36.89\00:37:41.39 No really, that's what you do. 00:37:41.42\00:37:42.76 And by the way look for people who are eating alone. 00:37:42.79\00:37:46.16 They're open, they may not know anybody. 00:37:46.19\00:37:48.63 You'd be surprised how many are sitting there eating alone 00:37:48.66\00:37:50.93 because they don't have anybody to join them. 00:37:50.97\00:37:53.10 Sit at that table, I try to eat on Wednesdays in the cafeteria, 00:37:53.13\00:37:56.54 so if you're in the cafeteria from 12:30 to 1:30 00:37:56.57\00:37:58.74 I'll be happy to meet you sometime. 00:37:58.77\00:38:00.61 This last Wednesday so I go to the cafeteria 00:38:00.64\00:38:02.28 and there is a girl sitting right there and I said, 00:38:02.31\00:38:03.91 "Hey, is this chair taken across the table? 00:38:03.98\00:38:06.51 She said, "Yes." 00:38:06.55\00:38:08.02 And nobody hear but anyway there's somebody was coming 00:38:11.25\00:38:13.99 so I said, "How about the chair beside it? 00:38:14.02\00:38:15.49 She said, you can have it, I said, I will, sat out. 00:38:15.52\00:38:18.96 Look at, it's just mingling, 00:38:18.99\00:38:20.46 it's just going where people are, 00:38:20.53\00:38:21.83 you can do that in the cafeteria here. 00:38:21.86\00:38:23.20 Your kids go to public school, join the PTA, come on, 00:38:23.23\00:38:25.73 be a part of the parent-teacher association, 00:38:25.77\00:38:27.44 hang around people. 00:38:27.47\00:38:28.90 Don't just live in your little 00:38:28.94\00:38:30.41 isolated cloister silo somewhere, get out, mingle. 00:38:30.44\00:38:35.41 By the way you're college student, 00:38:35.44\00:38:36.78 join in after-school tutoring program 00:38:36.85\00:38:39.28 in Benton Harbor or Berrien Springs. 00:38:39.31\00:38:42.35 Sharon Russell will tell you how much you're needed, 00:38:42.38\00:38:45.72 please go, just volunteer. 00:38:45.75\00:38:48.96 You'd be around people 00:38:48.99\00:38:50.33 you would never be around with otherwise. 00:38:50.36\00:38:51.99 Join the rotary club, the optimist, 00:38:52.03\00:38:53.43 some sort of service club, I don't care, go to weddings, 00:38:53.50\00:38:56.33 go to graduation receptions, hang around people. 00:38:56.36\00:38:59.07 Jot it down, 00:38:59.10\00:39:00.50 "To mingle simply means to show up 00:39:00.57\00:39:02.64 where people already are." 00:39:02.67\00:39:05.34 Don't show up where they are not. 00:39:05.37\00:39:07.04 Show up where they are. 00:39:07.11\00:39:09.74 It means that we take the initiative, 00:39:09.78\00:39:12.11 this is really important. 00:39:12.15\00:39:13.48 We take the initiative. 00:39:13.55\00:39:14.88 Now this is little campus is a bit cloistered, 00:39:14.92\00:39:16.72 and these campus things, you want to, 00:39:16.75\00:39:18.29 you want to be with us, you come to our H-Pac, 00:39:18.32\00:39:21.16 you come to us, we don't go to you, Forget handkerchief. 00:52:14.73\00:52:17.13 Soledad is sobbing into a huge bath towel. 00:52:17.17\00:52:19.87 And the few of us there found our arms too short 00:52:19.90\00:52:22.70 to wrap around this kind of pain. 00:52:22.74\00:52:25.01 I see Soledad a lot, 00:52:25.04\00:52:26.37 but this one day, two years after the death of Angel, 00:52:26.41\00:52:29.84 I see her in front of the office and we hug. 00:52:29.88\00:52:31.75 "How you doin', kiddo?" 00:52:31.78\00:52:33.48 Soledad grabs my arm and thinks and considers her words. 00:52:33.52\00:52:37.19 "You know, she says, 00:52:37.25\00:52:39.09 I love the two kids that I have. 00:52:39.12\00:52:42.16 I hurt for the two that are gone." 00:52:42.19\00:52:44.49 She begins to cry and shows the slightest embarrassment 00:52:44.53\00:52:47.03 at the size of her honesty. 00:52:47.10\00:52:48.43 "The hurt wins she says, the hurt wins." 00:52:48.46\00:52:52.30 Two months later, 00:52:52.33\00:52:53.67 Soledad is taken to the hospital 00:52:53.70\00:52:55.04 for an irregular heartbeat and chest pain. 00:52:55.07\00:52:56.97 I visit her in her room, and she tells me what happened 00:52:57.04\00:52:58.97 the night she came to the emergency room. 00:52:59.01\00:53:01.24 They have her on a gurney in the White Memorial's ER. 00:53:01.28\00:53:05.11 The doctors are tending to her with EKGs and the like, 00:53:05.15\00:53:07.98 when there is a rush of activity 00:53:08.02\00:53:09.38 at the entrance with a flurry of bodies 00:53:09.42\00:53:11.25 and medical staff moving into their proscribed roles, 00:53:11.29\00:53:13.69 a teenage gang member is rushed to the vacant space 00:53:13.76\00:53:16.73 right next to Soledad. 00:53:16.76\00:53:18.09 The kid is covered in blood from multiple gunshot wounds, 00:53:18.13\00:53:20.40 and they begin cutting off his clothes. 00:53:20.43\00:53:22.06 The wounds are too serious to waste time 00:53:22.10\00:53:23.73 pulling the curtain that separates Soledad 00:53:23.77\00:53:25.77 from this kid fighting for his life. 00:53:25.80\00:53:27.84 People are pounding on his chest and inserting IVs. 00:53:27.87\00:53:30.71 Soledad turns and sees him. 00:53:30.77\00:53:32.97 She recognizes 00:53:33.01\00:53:36.44 him as a kid from the gang 00:53:36.48\00:53:38.21 that most certainly robbed her of her two sons. 00:53:38.25\00:53:42.45 As I saw this kid, she tells me, 00:53:42.48\00:53:44.49 "I just kept thinking of what my friends might say 00:53:44.52\00:53:46.62 if they were here with me. 00:53:46.65\00:53:47.99 They'd say, pray that he dies, pray that he dies." 00:53:48.02\00:53:51.23 But she just looked at this tiny kid, 00:53:51.26\00:53:52.89 struggling to sidestep the fate of her sons, 00:53:52.93\00:53:55.46 as the doctors work and scream, 00:53:55.50\00:53:57.00 we're losing him, we're losing him. 00:53:57.03\00:53:58.87 And I began to cry as I have never cried before 00:53:58.90\00:54:02.27 and I started to pray the hardest I've ever prayed. 00:54:02.30\00:54:05.34 Please don't let him die. 00:54:05.37\00:54:08.84 I don't want his mom to go through what I have." 00:54:08.88\00:54:13.25 And the kid lived. 00:54:13.28\00:54:16.35 Sometimes, it only seems that the hurt wins. 00:54:16.38\00:54:20.36 Mary Oliver writes, 00:54:20.39\00:54:21.72 "There are things you can't reach. 00:54:21.76\00:54:23.93 But you can reach out to them, 00:54:23.96\00:54:25.83 and all day long." 00:54:25.86\00:54:28.60 Because if we don't reach out, 00:54:31.70\00:54:34.64 no matter what your hurt, 00:54:34.67\00:54:36.00 no matter what your fear is I can't do this. 00:54:36.04\00:54:37.97 If we don't reach out 00:54:38.01\00:54:40.58 and we have the good news and the good news is Jesus. 00:54:40.64\00:54:43.75 If we don't share it, 00:54:43.81\00:54:47.78 what's the point 00:54:47.82\00:54:50.65 of the good news in the end?
