Ever heard of Bermuda shorts? 00:08:57.78\00:09:01.12 They are from Bermuda. Ever heard of Bermuda grass? 00:09:01.15\00:09:03.92 It's from Bermuda. 00:09:03.95\00:09:05.36 So Karen and I flew over there for island wide 00:09:05.39\00:09:07.90 revival weekend. 00:09:07.93\00:09:10.30 And when I got there I learn-- oh, I learned history 00:09:10.33\00:09:14.59 and I said, I have got to meet the famous man. 00:09:14.62\00:09:18.38 I'll tell you about him in just a moment 00:09:18.41\00:09:19.60 but let me just show you a picture too. 00:09:19.63\00:09:21.19 You look right at the screen 00:09:21.22\00:09:22.77 and I'll show you picture to of Bermuda. 00:09:22.80\00:09:24.83 What is Bermuda? 00:09:24.86\00:09:26.11 It's just a tiny little island, just about 23 miles long. 00:09:26.14\00:09:29.56 And at its widest point-- can you see it on the screen? 00:09:29.59\00:09:32.84 You can look over here. 00:09:32.87\00:09:34.20 At its widest point it's only three miles wide. 00:09:34.23\00:09:37.05 So it's just a-- kind of a-- shape like a curly Q 00:09:37.08\00:09:41.37 out in the middle of the Atlantic, 00:09:41.40\00:09:42.84 beautiful island. 00:09:42.87\00:09:43.90 And look at the flowers that are grown over here. 00:09:43.93\00:09:45.20 Let's take a look. Oh. 00:09:45.23\00:09:46.99 I think that's a Bird of Paradise plant. 00:09:47.02\00:09:48.86 Beautiful flower, just growing along the side of the road. 00:09:48.89\00:09:51.77 Let's look at another one. 00:09:51.80\00:09:52.85 What's the next? Oh, yeah. 00:09:52.88\00:09:54.09 Do you see, there are a lot of little islands 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.82 that make up the nation of Bermuda. 00:09:55.85\00:09:59.23 Now Bermuda is-- have you ever heard of Britain, 00:09:59.26\00:10:03.73 Great Britain? 00:10:03.76\00:10:05.27 Ever heard of the United Kingdom? 00:10:05.30\00:10:06.59 Have you heard of it? 00:10:06.62\00:10:07.65 Okay, this is one of their colonies, the last colony. 00:10:07.68\00:10:09.86 This is the last one. 00:10:09.89\00:10:11.40 This belongs to Great Britain. 00:10:11.43\00:10:13.15 I'll show you that in just a moment. 00:10:13.18\00:10:14.21 Okay. 00:10:14.24\00:10:15.27 Oh, take a look at the city tower 00:10:15.30\00:10:16.76 in the Hamilton-- 00:10:16.79\00:10:18.20 Hamilton town center, that's the capital of Bermuda. 00:10:18.23\00:10:20.80 Most city towers have clocks on them 00:10:20.83\00:10:23.00 but look very closely at that tower 00:10:23.03\00:10:25.48 because the tower has a compass on it. 00:10:25.51\00:10:28.60 You know what a compass? 00:10:28.63\00:10:29.67 Compass points-- what direction does a compass point? 00:10:29.70\00:10:32.12 North. 00:10:32.15\00:10:33.65 South. East. 00:10:33.68\00:10:34.94 Oh, you know a compass. 00:10:34.97\00:10:36.34 And this compass is hooked up to the wind vane at the top. 00:10:36.37\00:10:39.55 Do you see the wind vane at the top? 00:10:39.58\00:10:41.09 And when the wind turns that little wind vane 00:10:41.12\00:10:43.92 the hand on the compass points the direction 00:10:43.95\00:10:46.58 that the wind is coming from. 00:10:46.61\00:10:47.64 Because when you are out in the middle of the Atlantic 00:10:47.67\00:10:49.23 and you have no where to go and you are stuck on the island 00:10:49.26\00:10:51.35 you need to know where that wind is coming from. 00:10:51.38\00:10:54.20 Because they get huge hurricanes there, 00:10:54.23\00:10:57.10 so they are very careful. 00:10:57.13\00:10:58.48 Next picture, please. 00:10:58.51\00:10:59.55 Oh, what's that picture of? 00:10:59.58\00:11:00.91 Oh, that's the big Hamilton church. 00:11:00.94\00:11:03.23 That's the main church. And notice the colors. 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.21 I want you to see the colors. 00:11:05.24\00:11:06.39 See the nice yellow pastel color. 00:11:06.42\00:11:08.16 Let's see the next picture 00:11:08.19\00:11:09.43 because there's the conference office. 00:11:09.46\00:11:11.19 Oh, nice pastel pink, I like that. 00:11:11.22\00:11:14.62 Very nice. 00:11:14.65\00:11:16.08 And before I show you I need to show you this BMW. 00:11:16.11\00:11:18.62 See, this is a car. 00:11:18.65\00:11:19.79 You know that car? Okay. 00:11:19.82\00:11:21.86 Look where the license plate is, 00:11:21.89\00:11:23.95 look where the license plate is. 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.48 What do you see there instead of the license plate? 00:11:25.51\00:11:28.17 A crown A crown. That's right. 00:11:28.20\00:11:30.69 If you see a car with a silver crown on it 00:11:30.72\00:11:33.41 and no license plate, it belongs to the queen, 00:11:33.44\00:11:36.63 they're in the service of Queen Elizabeth II, you see. 00:11:36.66\00:11:39.64 There is still a colony, 00:11:39.67\00:11:40.76 so the queen is still their monarch. 00:11:40.79\00:11:43.59 But they think-- they consider themselves British Americans 00:11:43.62\00:11:46.62 because there's a lot of Americans there 00:11:46.65\00:11:48.13 plus Britishers. 00:11:48.16\00:11:49.63 So there you got that. Now look at the colors. 00:11:49.66\00:11:51.40 Oh, look at that, little blue, little purple. 00:11:51.43\00:11:54.12 You see, all the houses are in pastel, little bit of pink. 00:11:54.15\00:11:56.66 Let's look at another one. 00:11:56.69\00:11:57.92 Oh, blue and yellow. 00:11:57.95\00:11:59.93 Let's do a close up on the yellow. 00:11:59.96\00:12:01.92 Oh, that's a church. 00:12:01.95\00:12:02.98 And I'm thinking we ought to paint Pioneer a bright yellow 00:12:03.01\00:12:06.38 so all the students on campus will know where the church is. 00:12:06.41\00:12:10.42 You go to the big yellow building. 00:12:10.45\00:12:11.80 Look, isn't that something? Isn't that pretty? 00:12:11.83\00:12:13.35 Oh, that's beautiful. 00:12:13.38\00:12:15.65 Okay, now I want to tell you about somebody, 00:12:15.68\00:12:18.60 most famous person in Bermuda. 00:12:18.63\00:12:20.45 They told me about him, they told Karen, they said, 00:12:20.48\00:12:22.48 "Oh, if you are lucky you get to meet him." 00:12:22.51\00:12:26.19 His picture is taken by more people 00:12:26.22\00:12:27.89 than any other face in Bermuda. 00:12:27.92\00:12:29.96 He's known the whole world over. 00:12:29.99\00:12:32.62 I want to tell you his story because it's perfect 00:12:32.65\00:12:35.09 for the Sabbath after Thanksgiving. 00:12:35.12\00:12:38.72 His name is Johnny. 00:27:41.59\00:27:42.79 Nope. 00:27:42.82\00:27:45.31 According to Tim Jones, professor 00:27:45.34\00:27:47.08 of applied anthropology at the University of Arizona, 00:27:47.11\00:27:50.58 who has spent 10 years going through American garbage. 00:27:50.61\00:27:52.90 How its like that to be a professional expertise? 00:27:52.93\00:27:56.51 I heard, he was interviewed on NPR, 00:27:56.54\00:27:58.60 from the farm to the store to the table 00:27:58.63\00:28:00.66 nearly one-half of America's food 00:28:00.69\00:28:03.21 never gets eaten. 00:28:03.24\00:28:06.11 Fifty billion dollars worth of food every year 00:28:06.14\00:28:08.74 we Americans throw away from brown bananas 00:28:08.77\00:28:13.96 and I'm guilty that one, to day old rice, 00:28:13.99\00:28:17.83 to cottage cheese casseroles that finally grow 00:28:17.86\00:28:19.63 mold in the refrigerator, you just throe it away. 00:28:19.66\00:28:23.01 When you've eaten-- how does it go? 00:28:23.04\00:28:24.58 "When you have eaten and are full." 00:28:24.61\00:28:29.00 What should our response be? 00:28:29.03\00:28:31.12 Let's take that, let's take a moment, 00:28:31.15\00:28:32.57 I impact that line together. 00:28:32.60\00:28:34.30 This is from our series, The Chosen 00:28:34.33\00:28:36.50 and this teaching will be entitled 00:28:36.53\00:28:38.88 "An American Thanksgiving in Canaan," all right. 00:28:38.91\00:28:42.96 Go to Deuteronomy 8, please with me. 00:28:42.99\00:28:44.88 Deuteronomy Chapter 8, 00:28:44.91\00:28:45.94 if you haven't already found it. 00:28:45.97\00:28:48.98 Take your Bible, if you don't have a Bible 00:28:49.01\00:28:50.53 grab the pew Bible in front of you, 00:28:50.56\00:28:52.97 New King James Version. 00:28:53.00\00:28:54.69 Stunning bit of discovery here 00:28:54.72\00:28:57.82 and I pass it on to you as well. 00:28:57.85\00:29:00.37 Deuteronomy Chapter 8, that would be-- 00:29:00.40\00:29:02.26 by the way in our pew Bible, page 129. 00:29:02.29\00:29:05.66 Remember this Moses' farewell address, 00:29:05.69\00:29:08.07 in a few days he'll be dead. 00:29:08.10\00:29:11.48 He's lead these people for 40 years 00:29:11.51\00:29:13.50 through the burning sands of that wilderness wandering 00:29:13.53\00:29:17.86 and he announces to them, look you guys, I can go with you 00:29:17.89\00:29:20.11 but when you get over into Canaan, 00:29:20.14\00:29:22.34 when you have your Thanksgiving 00:29:22.37\00:29:24.55 and you have planted your garden 00:29:24.58\00:29:26.13 and you have reaped your fields and your tables are spread, 00:29:26.16\00:29:29.99 when you push away finally from that bountifully laden repast, 00:29:30.02\00:29:36.17 I want you to do this, please don't forget it. 00:29:36.20\00:29:39.37 Deuteronomy 8:10, 00:29:39.40\00:29:40.70 "When you've eaten and are full, 00:29:40.73\00:29:43.39 then you shall blessed the Lord your God 00:29:43.42\00:29:46.73 for the good land He has given to you." 00:29:46.76\00:29:54.12 I want you children, 00:29:54.15\00:29:55.85 I want you children to remember please, bless Him. 00:29:55.88\00:29:59.57 And there is a beautiful word, a Hebrew word is Baraq. 00:29:59.60\00:30:02.80 I love that word. 00:30:02.83\00:30:04.14 Now the NIV renders Baraq, are consistently praise 00:30:04.17\00:30:08.24 and I think we missed a little bit in that rendering. 00:30:08.27\00:30:10.55 It can mean to kneel down in worship. 00:30:10.58\00:30:13.65 It's the word that appears in this favorite-- 00:30:13.68\00:30:15.88 this one of our favorite Thanksgiving Psalm, Psalm 103. 00:30:15.91\00:30:18.97 Take a look at this, Psalm 103:1. 00:30:19.00\00:30:21.75 In fact, but let's just read this out loud together. 00:30:21.78\00:30:25.02 "Bless the Lord, O my soul, 00:30:25.05\00:30:27.83 and all that is within me, bless His holy name. 00:30:27.86\00:30:32.14 Bless the Lord, O my soul 00:30:32.17\00:30:34.96 and forget not all His benefits. 00:30:34.99\00:30:38.10 Who forgives all your iniquities, 00:30:38.13\00:30:40.63 who heals all your diseases, 00:30:40.66\00:30:43.03 who redeems your life from destruction, 00:30:43.06\00:30:46.00 who crowns you with loving-kindness 00:30:46.03\00:30:48.36 and tender mercies, 00:30:48.39\00:30:50.17 who satisfies your mouth with good things, 00:30:50.20\00:30:53.11 so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's." 00:30:53.14\00:30:56.63 When the child of God does inventory with her life 00:30:56.66\00:31:00.17 and she adds it up, Baraq, bless the Lord, O my soul. 00:31:00.20\00:31:06.45 And that's why, ladies and gentlemen, 00:31:06.48\00:31:07.67 when we get-- particularly 00:31:07.70\00:31:08.74 in our first celebration here at Pioneer, 00:31:08.77\00:31:10.97 when we gather the first thing we do is we sing those words, 00:31:11.00\00:31:14.52 "Praise God from whom 00:31:14.55\00:31:17.86 all blessings flow." 00:31:17.89\00:31:22.84 "When you've eaten and are full, 00:31:22.87\00:31:25.60 then you shall blessed the Lord your God for the good land 00:31:25.63\00:31:27.95 which he is given you." 00:31:27.98\00:31:29.25 America-- I understand it, 00:31:29.28\00:31:30.57 America is not a Christian nation 00:31:30.60\00:31:32.74 but we are a blessed nation. 00:31:32.77\00:31:34.95 You can say that whether you are Christian or Muslim 00:31:34.98\00:31:36.99 or Jew or atheist, it doesn't matter, 00:31:37.02\00:31:38.88 you got a sense that this nation of ours. 00:31:38.91\00:31:41.59 I know that they are 100 nations represented here 00:31:41.62\00:31:43.29 when all the students are home, but you've got a sense 00:31:43.32\00:31:46.42 that this nation of ours is truly blessed. 00:31:46.45\00:31:49.47 I came across an essay and easing kind of essay 00:31:49.50\00:31:54.18 that appear on the web written by John Durr. 00:31:54.21\00:31:57.34 Let me read this to you. 00:31:57.37\00:31:58.41 I want to talk about America's bountiful blessings. 00:31:58.44\00:32:01.08 "The United States is undeniably the richest 00:32:01.11\00:32:03.44 and most powerful nation ever on the face of the earth, 00:32:03.47\00:32:06.94 all right. 00:32:06.97\00:32:08.78 The gross domestic product, GDP of the United States 00:32:08.81\00:32:11.24 is larger than the next two biggest economies combined 00:32:11.27\00:32:13.58 which would be China and Japan. 00:32:13.61\00:32:15.22 The US economy out-produces the combined economies 00:32:15.25\00:32:17.64 of over 47 poor nations 00:32:17.67\00:32:19.63 which account for 53% the population of the world, 00:32:19.66\00:32:22.57 these 47 nations including China and India. 00:32:22.60\00:32:27.00 But if you translate it to an individual scale 00:32:27.03\00:32:29.00 how much is that does that income of the average American 00:32:29.03\00:32:31.77 compared to the average income of the poor of the world? 00:32:31.80\00:32:34.10 Listen to this, last available statistics 2000, 00:32:34.13\00:32:36.69 the per capita income of the US was 360% higher than 00:32:36.72\00:32:40.40 the world average per capita income, the CPI. 00:32:40.43\00:32:43.47 The U.S. boasted a CPI of $34,100 00:32:43.50\00:32:48.15 while the average world CPI was $7,410." 00:32:48.18\00:32:52.18 This doesn't even give an accurate picture 00:32:52.21\00:32:53.66 because the world average include the US 00:32:53.69\00:32:55.38 and the other wealthy nations of Europe. 00:32:55.41\00:32:57.66 Therefore let's look at the 56% of the world's population 00:32:57.69\00:33:00.44 who comprise the world's poor. 00:33:00.47\00:33:01.97 Listen to this, "According to the statistics, 00:33:02.00\00:33:04.61 these statistics from the World Bank, 00:33:04.64\00:33:06.39 56% of the world's population lives in extreme poverty. 00:33:06.42\00:33:10.42 They survive on an income of less than $730 per year." 00:33:10.45\00:33:16.38 Which you calculate to $2 per day. 00:33:16.41\00:33:18.41 "Half of the world's poor who comprise 00:33:18.44\00:33:20.49 28% of the world's population live on $1 or less a day 00:33:20.52\00:33:25.25 in comparison the average American earns from 00:33:25.28\00:33:27.01 46 to 92 times more then the poverty-stricken 00:33:27.04\00:33:31.29 comprising over half of the world's population." 00:33:31.32\00:33:34.16 We are a blessed nation. 00:33:34.19\00:33:37.87 Reading an author a century ago to write these words. 00:33:37.90\00:33:41.58 Every now and then I go back to his words 00:33:41.61\00:33:42.92 I have them scribbled at the top of the page 00:33:42.95\00:33:45.59 for Revelation 13 in my Bible. 00:33:45.62\00:33:48.56 I go back to these words just to be reminded. 00:33:48.59\00:33:50.99 Put it on the screen for you. 00:33:51.02\00:33:53.29 "The Lord has done more for the United States 00:33:53.32\00:33:56.79 than for any other country upon which the sun shines." 00:33:56.82\00:34:02.18 Right now I'm reading Nathaniel Philbrick's 00:34:06.81\00:34:09.34 newest book, it's called Mayflower. 00:34:09.37\00:34:13.19 You look at the blog today in the bulletin on our website 00:34:13.22\00:34:15.53 I referred to that book and some statistics. 00:34:15.56\00:34:18.25 It's an amazing, amazing tale. 00:34:18.28\00:34:20.24 And by the way, the book is not just-- 00:34:20.27\00:34:21.40 it's is not just getting the pilgrims 00:34:21.43\00:34:23.02 to Cape Cod, it's the 60 after, 00:34:23.05\00:34:26.61 it's just a phenomenal story. 00:34:26.64\00:34:29.20 But I want to tell you, my personal, 00:34:29.23\00:34:30.26 my personal response, I'm reading this 00:34:30.29\00:34:31.76 and I'm thinking to myself 00:34:31.79\00:34:34.05 how can you deny that the hand of almighty God 00:34:34.08\00:34:39.10 has been instrumental in shaping 00:34:39.13\00:34:43.48 the very heart and soul of this nation. 00:34:43.51\00:34:46.99 Now I am looking out and I see there are people here 00:34:47.02\00:34:48.53 from other nations and you taken perhaps 00:34:48.56\00:34:50.68 a bit of an affront to this, 00:34:50.71\00:34:52.22 I am not suggesting for a moment 00:34:52.25\00:34:54.39 that God has not had a hand in your nation 00:34:54.42\00:34:56.74 but I am telling you, of all nations upon 00:34:56.77\00:34:58.75 which the sun shines, there's been no nation 00:34:58.78\00:35:02.16 more blessed than this one. 00:35:02.19\00:35:06.07 And I don't say that with hubris either, 00:35:06.10\00:35:08.23 you got to know my heart, I was born in Japan. 00:35:08.26\00:35:10.00 So I am American kid but grew up overseas. 00:35:10.03\00:35:14.02 I don't say we're hubris and I tell you why I don't 00:35:14.05\00:35:16.71 because I know, I know 00:35:16.74\00:35:18.95 how the story is gonna suddenly pivot 00:35:18.98\00:35:22.71 and it is same like life is going on just as usual 00:35:22.74\00:35:25.14 in the good old US of A 00:35:25.17\00:35:26.42 and then there will be something, 00:35:26.45\00:35:28.14 there will be a massive paradigm shift. 00:35:28.17\00:35:32.65 And the ending to this nation is an ending of utter tragedy. 00:35:32.68\00:35:36.93 My heart just breaks when I realized 00:35:36.96\00:35:39.91 what is coming to America. 00:35:39.94\00:35:42.45 I mean, I read the apocalypse, I read the prophecies. 00:35:42.48\00:35:46.14 I was out jogging this Thanksgiving morning, 00:35:46.17\00:35:48.21 did my little 5k in that beautiful crisp air 00:35:48.24\00:35:53.14 of Thanksgiving morning and I was just saying, 00:35:53.17\00:35:55.88 God, you have got to-- I know how the story ends 00:35:55.91\00:35:59.46 but hold off that ending as long as You can, 00:35:59.49\00:36:03.16 keep America 00:36:03.19\00:36:07.02 in the hallow of Your hand a little longer. 00:36:07.05\00:36:11.53 It's a sad, sad ending. 00:36:11.56\00:36:13.96 And maybe in the New Year 00:36:13.99\00:36:15.90 you and I will examine that ending. 00:36:15.93\00:36:18.64 But for now we are a nation blessed, 00:36:18.67\00:36:21.26 surely of all nations on earth. 00:36:21.29\00:36:22.91 A holiday called Thanksgiving would be appropriate. 00:36:22.94\00:36:28.76 How is it go? 00:36:28.79\00:36:29.82 "When you have eaten and are full 00:36:29.85\00:36:32.95 then you shall bless the Lord your God 00:36:32.98\00:36:34.96 for the Good land which He has given to you." 00:36:34.99\00:36:38.66 I mean, that's a no brainier. 00:36:38.69\00:36:39.77 I said, who else am I suppose to bless. 00:36:39.80\00:36:41.07 If I can't bless God, who else? 00:36:41.10\00:36:42.53 Moses said, I want to put another person in play 00:36:42.56\00:36:44.92 as a possibility for being blessed. 00:36:44.95\00:36:47.25 Watch this, verse 12, 00:36:47.28\00:36:49.27 "Lest when you've eaten and are full, 00:36:49.30\00:36:52.53 and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them, 00:36:52.56\00:36:54.59 and when you heard and your flocks multiply," 00:36:54.62\00:36:56.32 verse 13, "and your silver and your golden are multiplied, 00:36:56.35\00:36:58.36 and all that you have is multiplied," 00:36:58.39\00:37:00.37 verse 14, "when your heart is lifted up, 00:37:00.40\00:37:02.27 and you forget the Lord 00:37:02.30\00:37:03.35 who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 00:37:03.38\00:37:04.71 from the house of bondage, 00:37:04.74\00:37:05.94 who leads you through the great and terrible wilderness 00:37:05.97\00:37:08.15 in which they were fiery serpents" 00:37:08.18\00:37:09.52 don't miss next Sabbath, Fiery Serpents. 00:37:09.55\00:37:11.95 "And scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water, 00:37:11.98\00:37:14.62 who brought water for you out of the flinty rock, 00:37:14.65\00:37:19.05 who fed you" verse 16, 00:37:19.08\00:37:20.26 "in the wilderness with a manna, 00:37:20.29\00:37:21.35 which your fathers did not know that He my humble you 00:37:21.38\00:37:23.68 and that he might test you, to do you good in the end. 00:37:23.71\00:37:26.44 Lest you say in your heart," verse 17, 00:37:26.47\00:37:28.99 "my power and the might of my hand 00:37:29.02\00:37:31.22 have gained me this wealth." 00:37:31.25\00:37:34.17 There's another person in play here 00:37:34.20\00:37:36.14 and instead of blessing God you know what, 00:37:36.17\00:37:37.82 You and I, we can resort to self-blessing, bless me. 00:37:37.85\00:37:43.27 And by the way, when you say bless me, 00:37:43.30\00:37:44.46 it's not because you sneezed either, 00:37:44.49\00:37:45.71 just blast me for what I did, self-blessing. 00:37:45.74\00:37:50.89 The prevailing sin. 00:37:50.92\00:37:52.01 We don't need it down out trump to remind us this, do we? 00:37:52.04\00:37:55.26 The self-blessings is the prevailing sin 00:37:55.29\00:37:56.74 of this generation. 00:37:56.77\00:37:58.08 I don't suppose it's unique to this generation. 00:37:58.11\00:38:00.55 Obviously once upon a time there was a king name 00:38:00.58\00:38:03.47 Nebuchadnezzar. 00:38:03.50\00:38:04.80 And Jesus told a parable about a rich fool, 00:38:04.83\00:38:06.93 I understand that. 00:38:06.96\00:38:10.12 But it is certainly 00:38:10.15\00:38:12.50 the prevailing sin of our age. 00:38:12.53\00:38:18.41 We flew, you know, to Bermuda for that island wide revival. 00:38:18.44\00:38:24.44 They are just moving into elections now. 00:38:24.47\00:38:26.99 The highest elected official their be 00:38:27.02\00:38:29.46 equivalent of our president, he's known as premier, 00:38:29.49\00:38:31.51 he serves under the Queen, you understand. 00:38:31.54\00:38:33.87 But they wanted him, the premier to come 00:38:33.90\00:38:35.97 and of course with elections just three weeks away, 00:38:36.00\00:38:38.02 why would you turn down an opportunity 00:38:38.05\00:38:39.41 to address a group like that. 00:38:39.44\00:38:40.56 And so the premier showed up. 00:38:40.59\00:38:41.80 They also invited 00:38:41.83\00:38:43.07 the opposition leader in the parliament. 00:38:43.10\00:38:46.72 So he was there, and all front row 00:38:46.75\00:38:49.31 Sabbath morning of government officials. 00:38:49.34\00:38:52.47 And they invited both of these men, 00:38:52.50\00:38:53.76 first the premier and then the opposition leader 00:38:53.79\00:38:55.48 to get up and share a few words or greeting. 00:38:55.51\00:38:58.37 And as they were giving that greeting I was reminded, 00:38:58.40\00:39:00.73 I was reminded of my very human tendency 00:39:00.76\00:39:06.11 to always present myself in the best light possible, 00:39:06.14\00:39:10.92 without looking, like I am self-blessing. 00:39:10.95\00:39:14.42 Let me tell you, some politicians 00:39:14.45\00:39:15.49 don't have a corner on this thing. 00:39:15.52\00:39:18.11 They don't have a corner on it. 00:39:18.14\00:39:21.77 "Lest--" verse 17, "Lest you say in your heart, 00:39:21.80\00:39:24.72 'My power and the might of my hand 00:39:24.75\00:39:27.65 have gained me this wealth." 00:39:27.68\00:39:29.37 Self-blessing, the prevailing sin of this generation. 00:39:29.40\00:39:31.79 Is it not? But of course. 00:39:31.82\00:39:34.30 But what's so stunning about this passage 00:39:34.33\00:39:36.75 is the very overt prescription that Moses offers 00:39:36.78\00:39:40.69 as an antidote to our self-blessing, to our tendency, 00:39:40.72\00:39:44.52 to our proclivity to self-blessing. 00:39:44.55\00:39:46.77 This stung me and it maybe surprising to you too. 00:39:46.80\00:39:49.33 Take a look at this, this is verse 10 00:39:49.36\00:39:51.41 and we left out a verse intensely. 00:39:51.44\00:39:53.10 We are reading it now, verse 11. 00:39:53.13\00:39:54.16 Verse 10, "When you've eaten and are full 00:39:54.19\00:39:56.71 then you shall bless the Lord your God 00:39:56.74\00:39:58.66 for the good land which he has given you." 00:39:58.69\00:40:00.38 Now the verse we left out, verse 11, 00:40:00.41\00:40:02.32 "Beware, that you do not forget the Lord your God 00:40:02.35\00:40:05.68 by not keeping His commandments, His judgment 00:40:05.71\00:40:09.34 and His statutes which I command you today." 00:40:09.37\00:40:12.84 You got to remember, Moses says, hey, guy's, 00:40:12.87\00:40:15.74 I'm gonna be gone in just a few hours, 00:40:15.77\00:40:17.62 you must remember the Lord your God. 00:40:17.65\00:40:20.09 By the way, you counted it. 00:40:20.12\00:40:21.44 I went through with my computer program 00:40:21.47\00:40:23.40 that it's his hands down, most favorite praising 00:40:23.43\00:40:25.92 in all the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:40:25.95\00:40:27.51 "The Lord your God," 282 times 00:40:27.54\00:40:31.88 it just always there, you got to remember, 00:40:31.91\00:40:34.29 the Lord your God, the Lord your God. 00:40:34.32\00:40:35.74 And that also include the times 00:40:35.77\00:40:36.80 when he talked about the Lord our God, 00:40:36.83\00:40:38.14 282 times the Lord your God. 00:40:38.17\00:40:39.83 I want you to keep him front-and-center, remember. 00:40:39.86\00:40:42.91 Now it says, don't forget. 00:40:42.94\00:40:44.29 Let's put it in the positive, remember. 00:40:44.32\00:40:47.15 And here's what's surprising, 00:40:47.18\00:40:48.34 how am I supposed to remember Moses? 00:40:48.37\00:40:50.11 How am I supposed to do it? 00:40:50.14\00:40:51.49 By keeping-- hold on, by keeping God's commitments. 00:40:51.52\00:40:59.14 You believe that? You don't think I do? 00:44:32.76\00:44:34.61 Oh, I do. 00:44:34.64\00:44:36.01 Although I am gonna tell you this, tell you this, 00:44:36.04\00:44:39.17 there are very few people that I obey. 00:44:39.20\00:44:42.66 I have a character flaw. 00:44:42.69\00:44:43.79 I am telling you, this is not something to be proud of 00:44:43.82\00:44:45.50 but I am going to tell you, I have a character flaw. 00:44:45.53\00:44:47.78 I am extremely stubborn 00:44:47.81\00:44:49.94 and I hate taking orders from anybody, 00:44:49.97\00:44:55.16 even my conference president. 00:44:55.19\00:44:57.68 Why? 00:44:57.71\00:44:58.74 Just I don't know, I am too independent. 00:44:58.77\00:45:00.05 God's working on that. 00:45:00.08\00:45:01.11 But I want to tell you, 00:45:01.14\00:45:02.60 there are some people in my life 00:45:02.63\00:45:05.01 I call them my EF hurting people 00:45:05.04\00:45:08.61 that when they speak I listen. 00:45:08.64\00:45:13.13 Do you know why I listen? 00:45:13.16\00:45:15.24 Because I admire them. 00:45:15.27\00:45:18.26 I respect them. 00:45:18.29\00:45:20.41 I love them. 00:45:20.44\00:45:21.92 So I trust them. 00:45:21.95\00:45:24.14 Now let me tell you something, they don't know I am listening. 00:45:24.17\00:45:27.80 Oh, I put an impossible protest, 00:45:27.83\00:45:35.19 an argument but I am listening. 00:45:35.22\00:45:38.85 My wife Karen is one of those people. 00:45:38.88\00:45:44.30 I play the devil's advocate with her. 00:45:44.33\00:45:47.44 I'll out logic her at every turn, 00:45:47.47\00:45:51.39 I'll frust, debate 00:45:51.42\00:45:56.85 but I am listening to see how well she holds this one. 00:45:56.88\00:46:02.98 And when she laid out her case 00:46:03.01\00:46:06.93 notice, I didn't' say when she lays down the law. 00:46:06.96\00:46:10.90 When she lays out her case I say, all right, 00:46:10.93\00:46:17.81 you made your point, I'll do it. 00:46:17.84\00:46:20.27 I'll do it. 00:46:20.30\00:46:21.52 Why? 00:46:21.55\00:46:22.75 Because she's someone I respect and admire and love. 00:46:22.78\00:46:25.14 Because I know her mind and her heart 00:46:25.17\00:46:26.84 I can trust her command, that's why. 00:46:26.87\00:46:29.30 I know her mind and I know her heart. 00:46:29.33\00:46:31.33 Jesus says, do you know My mind, 00:46:31.36\00:46:34.08 do you know My heart? 00:46:34.11\00:46:35.78 John 14:15, "If you love me, if you really love me 00:46:35.81\00:46:41.24 you will keep My commandments." 00:46:41.27\00:46:43.56 You will, America, if you really love me. 00:46:43.59\00:46:47.24 Some of you think this is a Christian nation, it is not 00:46:47.27\00:46:49.18 but you think it is, fine, keep His commandments, 00:46:49.21\00:46:51.32 America, keep His command. 00:46:51.35\00:46:53.86 If you love me, Jesus says, keep His commands. 00:46:53.89\00:46:56.23 Moses comes along, Deuteronomy 8:11, he says, 00:46:56.26\00:46:58.54 "Remember God by keeping His commandments." 00:46:58.57\00:47:02.03 Now ladies and gentlemen, neither Christ nor Moses 00:47:02.06\00:47:04.82 is appealing for legalism, rather both are bound together 00:47:04.85\00:47:07.66 the spirit of loving gratitude 00:47:07.69\00:47:09.02 with the spirit of grateful obedience. 00:47:09.05\00:47:10.66 They are overlaid, you can't separate them. 00:47:10.69\00:47:13.21 They have to go together. 00:47:13.24\00:47:17.78 Because whom you gracefully obey 00:47:17.81\00:47:19.86 you will faithfully remember 00:47:19.89\00:47:21.00 and the God you faithfully remember 00:47:21.03\00:47:22.61 is a God you will gratefully obey. 00:47:22.64\00:47:24.25 Luther is absolutely right. 00:47:24.28\00:47:25.95 All morality is gratitude, is gratitude. 00:47:25.98\00:47:32.31 And it is that appeal that is woven from stem to stern 00:47:32.34\00:47:37.11 throughout the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:47:37.14\00:47:38.66 You know why? 00:47:38.69\00:47:39.75 Because Deuteronomy is written for the chosen. 00:47:39.78\00:47:43.13 And when you've been chosen, when you have been chosen 00:47:43.16\00:47:48.01 the God who went to all of the work of choosing you 00:47:48.04\00:47:53.73 says, now follow Me, I have done this for you, 00:47:53.76\00:48:00.99 now you follow Me. 00:48:01.02\00:48:05.40 When you get into the land of Canaan 00:48:05.43\00:48:06.92 and your tables are full and you push away, 00:48:06.95\00:48:11.17 you bless the Lord your God 00:48:11.20\00:48:13.44 and beware, beware that you do not forget Him 00:48:13.47\00:48:17.06 by not keeping His commandments. 00:48:17.09\00:48:22.86 All morality is gratitude 00:48:22.89\00:48:26.34 which is why more than anyone else on earth 00:48:26.37\00:48:29.95 the chosen have been called to obey, 00:48:29.98\00:48:34.35 more than anybody else on earth. 00:48:34.38\00:48:37.15 If I read my apocalypse correctly 00:48:37.18\00:48:39.11 just before the return of Christ 00:48:39.14\00:48:40.45 the chosen to describe this way, Revelation 14:12, 00:48:40.48\00:48:43.00 "Here is the patience of the Saints, 00:48:43.03\00:48:45.14 here they who keep the commandments of God 00:48:45.17\00:48:47.45 and the faith of Jesus." 00:48:47.48\00:48:49.99 if you love Me, if you love Me you obey Me. 00:48:50.02\00:48:55.90 Here is the patience of the chosen, 00:48:55.93\00:48:58.36 the endurance of the chosen. 00:48:58.39\00:49:01.57 I have Christian friends who say, you know what, 00:49:01.60\00:49:04.24 I don't have to obey God, 00:49:04.27\00:49:05.62 His commandments are no longer binding to me. 00:49:05.65\00:49:08.19 I've been set free. 00:49:08.22\00:49:09.33 Oh, my friend, are you serious. 00:49:09.36\00:49:11.16 That is mistaken thinking to conclude the divine grace 00:49:11.19\00:49:13.84 is somehow released you from human obedience. 00:49:13.87\00:49:15.93 How could it be? It's impossible. 00:49:15.96\00:49:18.11 It is utterly illogical 00:49:18.14\00:49:21.12 because the reverse is just as true, 00:49:21.15\00:49:23.20 whom you disobey you do not truly love. 00:49:23.23\00:49:27.67 The chosen do not have the option, 00:49:27.70\00:49:30.19 they do not have the option. 00:49:30.22\00:49:32.20 They are called to obey. 00:49:32.23\00:49:35.07 Moses and Jesus and Luther are more than clear, 00:49:35.10\00:49:38.42 whom you love, you obey and all morality, all obedience 00:49:38.45\00:49:42.87 its gratitude, all of it grateful response. 00:49:42.90\00:49:47.40 Not legalism, its gratitude. 00:49:47.43\00:49:51.93 Which is why when we bow 00:49:51.96\00:49:53.29 you and I before the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ 00:49:53.32\00:49:56.13 how can we not help 00:49:56.16\00:49:58.11 but be moved to grateful obedience. 00:49:58.14\00:50:00.19 Do you understand that everything 00:50:00.22\00:50:01.67 you ate on Thursday and every possession 00:50:01.70\00:50:04.22 you still hold on to today, 00:50:04.25\00:50:06.58 all of it has been purchased by Calvary, 00:50:06.61\00:50:07.97 do you understand that? 00:50:08.00\00:50:09.25 Let me put it on the screen, 00:50:09.28\00:50:10.31 this classic line from Desire of Ages, pages 660, 00:50:10.34\00:50:14.58 "To the death of Christ we owe even this earthly life. 00:50:14.61\00:50:18.48 The bread we eat" I love this, 00:50:18.51\00:50:20.07 "the bread we eat is a purchase of His broken body. 00:50:20.10\00:50:22.75 The water we drink is bought by His spill blood. 00:50:22.78\00:50:25.04 Never one, saint or sinner eats his daily food, 00:50:25.07\00:50:27.80 but he is nourished by the body and the blood of Christ. 00:50:27.83\00:50:30.85 The cross of Calvary is stamped on every loaf. 00:50:30.88\00:50:34.70 It is reflected in every water spring." 00:50:34.73\00:50:40.05 Wow, to the death of Christ we owe our all 00:50:40.08\00:50:42.79 which is why all morality is gratitude. 00:50:42.82\00:50:46.01 We owe it all. 00:50:46.04\00:50:49.65 And which is why obedience is still a secret. 00:50:49.68\00:50:55.62 Hey, you want to live with a grateful life, 00:50:55.65\00:50:57.79 long past Thanksgiving this year? 00:50:57.82\00:50:59.40 Then obey Him, obey Him, obey His commandments 00:50:59.43\00:51:03.57 for it is true. 00:51:03.60\00:51:04.88 Obedience is the secret 00:51:04.91\00:51:08.59 to sustained gratitude. 00:51:08.62\00:51:13.04 Let us pray. 00:51:13.07\00:51:14.62 "When you've eaten enough full 00:51:18.12\00:51:19.57 then you shall bless the Lord your God. 00:51:19.60\00:51:21.92 Oh, Lord our God, 00:51:21.95\00:51:26.20 teach us to be thankful by helping us 00:51:26.23\00:51:32.46 to be obedient through Jesus Christ our Lord 00:51:32.49\00:51:36.87 whom to love is to obey, amen. 00:51:36.90\00:51:42.50 One can almost picture the pilgrims 00:51:45.56\00:51:47.82 in this hymn we're going to close with. 00:51:47.85\00:51:48.96 The hymn was composed in 1960s, 00:51:48.99\00:51:50.54 open your hymn please to hymn 556. 00:51:50.57\00:51:53.30 But you can picture that the pilgrims almost. 00:51:53.33\00:51:55.86 They hymn begin with these words, 00:51:55.89\00:51:57.17 "As saints of old there first-fruits 00:51:57.20\00:51:59.76 brought of orchard, flock, and field." 00:51:59.79\00:52:03.14 It's a great hymn, we never sung it here before, hymn 556. 00:52:03.17\00:52:06.44 But let's sing this grateful praise 00:52:06.47\00:52:07.81 to the familiar tune of Isaac Watts 00:52:07.84\00:52:10.69 "I sing the mighty power of God." 00:52:10.72\00:52:13.06 You know that melody, we will sing to that melody, 00:52:13.09\00:52:15.79 sing with all your heart. 00:52:15.82\00:52:17.68 This expressional gratitude, hymn 556. 00:52:17.71\00:52:21.40 As saints of old their first-fruits brought 00:52:56.35\00:53:00.39 Of orchard, flock, and field 00:53:00.42\00:53:04.44 To God, the giver all good 00:53:04.47\00:53:08.51 The source of bounteous yield 00:53:08.54\00:53:12.53 So we today first-fruits would bring 00:53:12.56\00:53:16.66 The wealth of this good land 00:53:16.69\00:53:21.00 Of farm and market, shop and home 00:53:21.03\00:53:27.05 Of mind and heart and hand 00:53:27.08\00:53:34.31 A world in need now summons us 00:53:34.34\00:53:38.44 To labor, love, and give 00:53:38.47\00:53:42.39 To make our life an offering 00:53:42.42\00:53:46.47 To God, that all may live 00:53:46.50\00:53:50.83 The church of Christ is calling us 00:53:50.86\00:53:54.98 To make the dream come true 00:53:55.01\00:53:59.38 A world redeemed by Christ-like love 00:53:59.41\00:54:06.10 All life in Christ made new 00:54:06.13\00:54:10.50 In gratitude and humble trust 00:54:13.50\00:54:17.55 We bring our best today 00:54:17.58\00:54:21.70 To serve Your cause and share Your love 00:54:21.73\00:54:26.19 With all along life's way 00:54:26.22\00:54:30.36 O God, who gave yourself to us 00:54:30.39\00:54:34.77 In Jesus Christ your Son 00:54:34.80\00:54:39.30 Teach us to give ourselves each day 00:54:39.33\00:54:46.16 Until life's work is done 00:54:46.19\00:54:52.78 And now may the God of peace 00:54:59.14\00:55:00.42 who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, 00:55:00.45\00:55:03.87 that great Shepherd of the sheep 00:55:03.90\00:55:05.85 through the blood of the everlasting covenant. 00:55:05.88\00:55:08.86 May He make you complete in every good work 00:55:08.89\00:55:11.01 to do His will. 00:55:11.04\00:55:12.70 Working in you what is pleasing in His sight, 00:55:12.73\00:55:15.75 through Jesus Christ to whom be glory 00:55:15.78\00:55:18.63 forever and ever, amen. 00:55:35.16\00:55:37.49 This is a series that has been growing 00:55:37.52\00:55:39.87 and it's burned on my heart and over the last few weeks 00:55:39.90\00:55:43.86 before this new season began. 00:55:43.89\00:55:45.73 And some concentrated prayer time 00:55:45.76\00:55:47.91 I believe the Spirit of God lead me do this series, 00:55:47.94\00:55:50.36 out of the Book of Deuteronomy
