Scott Peck opens the book, 00:13:14.02\00:13:20.53 three words, nobody's gonna deny the veracity 00:13:20.56\00:13:23.68 of these three words, "Life is difficult." 00:13:23.71\00:13:30.28 So stuff of human existence, our survival, it's difficult. 00:13:30.31\00:13:35.30 Just a few days ago, I sat down with a man, 00:13:35.33\00:13:38.19 his heart breaking over the immensity 00:13:38.22\00:13:43.40 of what he is suffering right now. 00:13:43.43\00:13:46.57 By the way, you don't have to be old to suffer. 00:13:46.60\00:13:48.40 I looked into that crystalline pain 00:13:51.73\00:13:53.94 of a young co-ed on this campus. 00:13:53.97\00:13:56.21 Struggling to find divine courage 00:13:56.24\00:13:58.99 in the midst of what she is going through. 00:13:59.02\00:14:02.14 I'll tell you the truth, "Life is difficult." 00:14:02.17\00:14:08.56 We know it intuitively and by the way, 00:14:08.59\00:14:12.22 some of you haven't suffered yet. 00:14:12.25\00:14:14.63 You've done all right, but trust me, 00:14:14.66\00:14:17.68 but they'll come before you exit this life. 00:14:17.71\00:14:20.86 You will suffer, can't avoid it, cannot. 00:14:20.89\00:14:25.95 So here's the question, how then, 00:14:25.98\00:14:27.44 how then should we live in the midst of suffering? 00:14:27.47\00:14:32.38 Bible word on this Thanksgiving season weekend 00:14:32.41\00:14:39.93 is entitled "The Gift: 00:14:39.96\00:14:42.04 When Every Nerve Shrieked With Pain." 00:14:42.07\00:14:46.83 Those of you watching on television, 00:14:46.86\00:14:47.97 you are gonna move to a study guide, 00:14:48.00\00:14:49.03 without any interruption, 00:14:49.06\00:14:50.62 not going to mention a word about it when we get to it. 00:14:50.65\00:14:52.75 So that's the website you want, 00:14:52.78\00:14:54.12 you see it on the screen right now. 00:14:54.15\00:14:55.90 Go to our website, you will get the same study guide 00:14:55.93\00:14:58.81 and we'll plunge into it. 00:14:58.84\00:15:00.05 For our case study today, all right, Thanksgiving season, 00:15:00.08\00:15:02.74 our case study today, we're going to examine 00:15:02.77\00:15:04.98 a little 5-foot 2-inch woman who lived a century ago, 00:15:05.01\00:15:11.16 that's our case study. 00:15:11.19\00:15:13.55 She has just boarded a sailing vessel 00:15:13.58\00:15:15.99 preparing to leave the western shores of this nation, 00:15:16.02\00:15:20.39 her destination, a rugged outback nation, 00:15:20.42\00:15:27.70 Australia. 00:15:27.73\00:15:29.05 You got it. 00:15:29.08\00:15:32.27 Leaders of the church that she serves in America 00:15:32.30\00:15:35.90 have sent her on a mission to build up the work of Christ 00:15:35.93\00:15:38.07 in that almost forsaken land at the time 00:15:38.10\00:15:44.28 across the pacific halfway around the world. 00:15:44.31\00:15:47.33 The truth is however 00:15:47.36\00:15:49.30 she has been politely banished for a season, 00:15:49.33\00:15:53.96 prophets are not always 00:15:53.99\00:15:55.04 the most popular people to have around, 00:15:55.07\00:15:56.93 you understand and she understands it. 00:15:56.96\00:16:01.61 And so she goes with everything within her 00:16:01.64\00:16:04.76 resisting this assignment to leave her home 00:16:04.79\00:16:10.50 and the comforts of her homeland, 00:16:10.53\00:16:13.55 at her age as a widow. 00:16:13.58\00:16:17.24 But she must practice what she preached. 00:16:17.27\00:16:20.81 Namely, submit to the counsel of the leadership, 00:16:20.84\00:16:24.01 however mistaken and uninformed the leaders maybe. 00:16:24.04\00:16:28.60 So she goes, but little does she know on this day 00:16:28.63\00:16:31.10 that she sails away from our shores 00:16:31.13\00:16:32.79 that she is sailing straight into the vortex 00:16:32.82\00:16:36.90 of the most intense physical suffering of her entire life. 00:16:36.93\00:16:42.13 Just days after she lands near Melbourne, Australia, 00:16:42.16\00:16:46.49 the suffering descends and I want you to take note 00:16:46.52\00:16:50.15 of her words as she describes what she went through. 00:16:50.18\00:16:53.36 Put it on the screen for you. 00:16:53.39\00:16:55.25 Ellen White writing, "I made the long journey 00:16:55.28\00:16:58.52 across the Pacific 00:16:58.55\00:16:59.96 and attended the conference held in Melbourne. 00:16:59.99\00:17:01.91 Just before the conference closed 00:17:01.94\00:17:03.72 I was stricken with a severe illness. 00:17:03.75\00:17:07.07 For the next eleven months 00:17:07.10\00:17:09.11 I suffered from malarial fever and inflammatory rheumatism." 00:17:09.14\00:17:13.54 Now hit the pause button right there, 00:17:13.57\00:17:14.85 so, Karen, my wife, is a nurse, 00:17:14.88\00:17:17.53 and I go to her, I say, hey, listen, 00:17:17.56\00:17:18.72 what's up with this inflammatory rheumatism? 00:17:18.75\00:17:21.98 She pulls down her big thick medical dictionary, 00:17:22.01\00:17:24.55 we look at it, go on Google when you can't find the answer 00:17:24.58\00:17:28.52 you are looking for, found it on Google, here it is. 00:17:28.55\00:17:33.10 Acute rheumatism, 00:17:33.13\00:17:34.88 inflammation of the joints attended with fever 00:17:34.91\00:17:38.49 and attacking usually the larger joints 00:17:38.52\00:17:40.98 which become swollen, hot, and extremely painful. 00:17:41.01\00:17:46.10 All right, 11 months of that, let's put it back up. 00:17:46.13\00:17:49.92 "During this period" Ellen White wrote, 00:17:49.95\00:17:52.96 "I experienced the most 00:17:52.99\00:17:54.29 terrible suffering of my whole life." 00:17:54.32\00:17:57.25 This by a woman who at the age of 9, 00:17:57.28\00:18:00.16 face struck by that angry classmate's stone, 00:18:00.19\00:18:04.71 intense suffering at the beginning, 00:18:04.74\00:18:05.95 but no, no, no, this was the worst. 00:18:05.98\00:18:09.24 "I was unable to lift my feet from the floor 00:18:09.27\00:18:10.91 without suffering great pain." 00:18:10.94\00:18:12.11 "My right arm," now watch this, "from the elbow down, 00:18:12.14\00:18:14.88 was the only part of my body that was free from pain. 00:18:14.91\00:18:18.78 My hips, my spine were in constant pain. 00:18:18.81\00:18:21.25 I could not lie on my cot for more than two hours at a time, 00:18:21.28\00:18:23.64 though I had rubber cushions under me. 00:18:23.67\00:18:25.73 I would drag myself 00:18:25.76\00:18:27.21 to a similar bed to change my position. 00:18:27.24\00:18:29.39 Physicians said I would never be able to walk again, 00:18:29.42\00:18:32.21 and I had fears that my life 00:18:32.24\00:18:34.04 was to be a perpetual conflict with suffering." 00:18:34.07\00:18:39.17 How did that go, "Life is difficult." 00:18:39.20\00:18:45.94 Even for the friends of God or maybe we ought to say 00:18:45.97\00:18:49.36 especially for the friends of God. 00:18:49.39\00:18:53.13 Eleven months of suffering 00:18:53.16\00:18:55.61 and what can we learn from this case study. 00:18:55.64\00:18:57.35 How to suffer, how to suffer. 00:18:57.38\00:19:01.23 I hold here in my hands, I'm really excited about this, 00:19:01.26\00:19:03.09 I hold here in my hands an entrusted loan, 00:19:03.12\00:19:06.45 all right, keyword, loan, from my friend Marlon Byrd 00:19:06.48\00:19:10.84 who is the director of the Center for Adventist Research 00:19:10.87\00:19:13.09 here at Andrews University. 00:19:13.12\00:19:15.00 I emailed Merlin this last week. 00:19:15.03\00:19:16.55 I say, hey, Merlin, any chance you would have 00:19:16.58\00:19:21.92 Ellen White's diary entries 00:19:21.95\00:19:23.73 during these 11 months of intense suffering? 00:19:23.76\00:19:26.55 I'd love to see those. 00:19:26.58\00:19:28.93 He shows up two hours later in my office 00:19:28.96\00:19:30.85 bearing this right here. 00:19:30.88\00:19:33.98 He said, Dwight, I'm doing something 00:19:34.01\00:19:36.78 I am not supposed to do. 00:19:36.81\00:19:40.66 I'm gonna let you use this, 00:19:40.69\00:19:43.29 but listen to me carefully, boy, 00:19:43.32\00:19:48.34 if anything happens to what I have loaned you, 00:19:48.37\00:19:53.42 you will never be heard from again. 00:19:53.45\00:19:58.81 All right, I got the message, Merlin. 00:19:58.84\00:20:02.65 He's down in Atlanta today, so he says, from your hands, this folder. 00:20:11.89\00:20:14.44 I got it. 00:20:14.47\00:20:16.17 All right, well, I got the boy, so anyway here they are. 00:20:16.20\00:20:21.46 I want to read a few diary entries, 00:20:21.49\00:20:23.06 these are all written in Australia, 00:20:23.09\00:20:24.53 those of you from down under. 00:20:24.56\00:20:28.53 These were written at Preston, Victoria, Australia. 00:20:28.56\00:20:31.07 Some of you will know where that is. 00:20:31.10\00:20:33.75 I'm going to begin with May 9, 00:20:33.78\00:20:35.93 just read a line or two here, share this with you. 00:20:35.96\00:20:39.11 "The past night" okay, she's writing, 00:20:39.14\00:20:40.70 oh, by the way, this is not the original diary. 00:20:40.73\00:20:46.78 The original diaries are in a vault 00:20:46.81\00:20:48.64 somewhere outside the nation's capital. 00:20:48.67\00:20:51.89 After she wrote, these were turned over to a secretary, 00:20:51.92\00:20:55.13 she had a secretarial pool. 00:20:55.16\00:20:56.83 They sat down with old typewriters. 00:20:56.86\00:20:58.34 They used-- some of you don't understand what this is, 00:21:01.46\00:21:03.33 but they used what was called carbon paper. 00:21:03.36\00:21:07.60 All the old timers are not in their heads, 00:21:07.63\00:21:10.79 by the way, we still put it at the bottom of letters, CC, 00:21:10.82\00:21:12.95 that means carbon copy 00:21:12.98\00:21:14.11 though we don't use carbon copies anymore. 00:21:14.14\00:21:17.54 So these are all these, but she went back over, 00:21:17.57\00:21:19.90 this was her practice to go back over 00:21:19.93\00:21:21.51 the typed entries and she would make corrections. 00:21:21.54\00:21:24.98 And I'll show you one in just a moment. 00:21:25.01\00:21:26.10 All right, so what's the date on this one. 00:21:26.13\00:21:27.24 May 9th, okay, May 9th, listen, onion skin paper here, 00:21:27.27\00:21:33.18 "The past night has been a very long one 00:21:33.21\00:21:34.99 and I am so restless that I long for the day." 00:21:35.02\00:21:37.82 You ever had nights like that 00:21:37.85\00:21:38.88 where you were just praying for day to come. 00:21:38.91\00:21:41.21 I long for the day, I keep my mind 00:21:41.24\00:21:43.34 as much as possible on the promises of God. 00:21:43.37\00:21:45.69 I do not claim these promises because I deserve them, 00:21:45.72\00:21:47.90 but because they are bestowed upon 00:21:47.93\00:21:49.36 erring human beings as a free gift. 00:21:49.39\00:21:51.61 I am comforted with the assurance 00:21:51.64\00:21:52.97 that although constantly suffering pain, 00:21:53.00\00:21:55.45 I am never forsaken. 00:21:55.48\00:21:57.02 I put my trust in One who is too wise to err 00:21:57.05\00:21:59.44 and too good to do me harm. 00:21:59.47\00:22:01.06 He will restore me to health. 00:22:01.09\00:22:02.59 I shall yet speak forth His praise in the congregation. 00:22:02.62\00:22:05.34 I am determined not to encourage feelings 00:22:05.37\00:22:07.35 of despondency and gloom..." 00:22:07.38\00:22:10.54 May 9, May 10, oh, listen to this, 00:22:10.57\00:22:16.43 "I have had a rather singular night." 00:22:16.46\00:22:18.99 That means unforgettable. 00:22:19.02\00:22:21.28 Watch this, "Sometime during the night 00:22:21.31\00:22:24.18 I woke to find myself lying stretched out on my back. 00:22:24.21\00:22:27.06 My heart was beating only feebly. 00:22:27.09\00:22:29.47 I felt as if my body were being crushed under a mass. 00:22:29.50\00:22:32.36 I could hardly move any of my limbs." 00:22:32.39\00:22:34.58 It almost feels, sounds like a heart attack it's not. 00:22:34.61\00:22:37.28 "I did not know where I was. 00:22:37.31\00:22:38.39 I called my nurse, but she did not hear me. 00:22:38.42\00:22:40.07 After trying several times, I succeeded in moving my limbs, 00:22:40.10\00:22:42.56 but my body seemed helpless. 00:22:42.59\00:22:44.25 It was more than half an hour before I could understand 00:22:44.28\00:22:46.57 that I was in bed, and before I could use my mind 00:22:46.60\00:22:48.88 or move my limbs freely. 00:22:48.91\00:22:50.69 Then the thought came to me 00:22:50.72\00:22:52.50 that the angels of the Lord had awakened me, 00:22:52.53\00:22:55.26 or else I should soon have breathed my last." 00:22:55.29\00:22:59.85 You university students do not understand this, trust me, 00:22:59.88\00:23:02.48 it'll come, the older you get, the more sensitive you are, 00:23:02.51\00:23:06.07 and in tune you are to this little ticker 00:23:06.10\00:23:08.66 and anything that feels abnormal, 00:23:08.69\00:23:10.91 you are on red alert, what is happening now, 00:23:10.94\00:23:13.73 that's what's going on there. 00:23:13.76\00:23:15.92 "I dared not try to sleep again." 00:23:15.95\00:23:17.72 I'm not going back to sleep now. 00:23:17.75\00:23:20.65 "For my heart seemed to be very feeble in action." 00:23:20.68\00:23:24.47 She's worried, sums on, sums up. 00:23:24.50\00:23:27.53 All right, May 11, 00:23:29.62\00:23:31.22 "I thank the Lord for the precious light today." 00:23:31.25\00:23:33.68 You can hear that a lot. 00:23:33.71\00:23:34.96 "The sleepless hours of the past night 00:23:34.99\00:23:36.75 were very wearing but I was not comfortless, 00:23:36.78\00:23:40.29 I find consolation in presenting my case to Jesus. 00:23:40.32\00:23:43.44 The grace of Christ strengthens me in my affliction." 00:23:43.47\00:23:47.28 So since this is a case study, Ladies and Gentlemen, 00:23:47.31\00:23:49.10 let's jot these down. 00:23:49.13\00:23:50.16 Seven of them. exactly what just happened 00:24:15.32\00:24:16.82 with these diary entries. 00:24:16.85\00:24:17.88 In your suffering, some of you, by the way, 00:24:17.91\00:24:19.84 listening on the radio right 00:24:43.26\00:24:49.02 some of you are experiencing it right now. 00:24:49.05\00:24:50.52 Number one, in your suffering, look to Jesus. 00:24:50.55\00:24:54.15 All right, here comes number two, 00:24:55.30\00:24:56.47 May 12, this is the very next day, 00:24:56.50\00:24:58.80 "The past night has been severe in trying." 00:24:58.83\00:25:00.91 You are going to hear this again and again. 00:25:00.94\00:25:02.54 "But I am determined not to be discouraged. 00:25:02.57\00:25:05.38 I will press my petitions to the throne of grace. 00:25:05.41\00:25:08.01 I spend many of my sleepless hours in earnest prayer to God 00:25:08.04\00:25:11.93 and I know that he hears me 00:25:11.96\00:25:13.56 and that he will not disappoint me." 00:25:13.59\00:25:16.09 There it is, principle number two, 00:25:16.12\00:25:17.86 before I share that with you, 00:25:17.89\00:25:19.43 let me put on the screen for you 00:25:19.46\00:25:21.47 and you have it in your study guide, 00:25:21.50\00:25:22.87 it's a little excerpt from a letter 00:25:22.90\00:25:24.41 she wrote back to the States 00:25:24.44\00:25:25.83 describing what she's going through. 00:25:25.86\00:25:27.46 Put it on the screen, 00:25:27.49\00:25:29.75 "In the long weary hours of the night," 00:25:29.78\00:25:33.05 all right, "in the long weary hours of the night, 00:25:33.08\00:25:35.81 when sleep has been out of the question, 00:25:35.84\00:25:38.53 I have devoted much time to prayer 00:25:38.56\00:25:41.05 and when every nerve seemed to be shrieking with pain, 00:25:41.08\00:25:45.08 when if I considered myself, 00:25:45.11\00:25:46.44 it seemed that I would go frantic, 00:25:46.47\00:25:47.80 the peace of Christ has come into my heart in such measure 00:25:47.83\00:25:50.71 that I have been filled with gratitude and thanksgiving. 00:25:50.74\00:25:53.31 I know that Jesus loves me, and I love Jesus. 00:25:53.34\00:25:55.88 Some nights I have slept three hours, 00:25:55.91\00:25:57.44 a few nights four hours, and much of the time only two, 00:25:57.47\00:26:00.09 and yet in these long Australian nights, 00:26:00.12\00:26:02.85 in the darkness, all seems light about me, 00:26:02.88\00:26:05.85 and I enjoy sweet communion with God." 00:26:05.88\00:26:11.12 Isn't that beautiful? Yeah, jot it down. 00:26:11.15\00:26:13.36 Principle number two, there it is. 00:26:13.39\00:26:15.11 In your suffering, talk to God. 00:26:15.14\00:26:19.68 In your suffering look to Jesus, 00:26:19.71\00:26:21.92 in your suffering, talk to God. 00:26:21.95\00:26:26.94 Okay, here's May 13, we'll pick up another principle, 00:26:26.97\00:26:32.50 May 13, here we go, 00:26:32.53\00:26:35.03 "I cannot yet move my left arm without pain, 00:26:35.06\00:26:39.16 but thankfulness is constantly welling up in my heart." 00:26:39.19\00:26:43.48 Remember, the only part of her body 00:26:43.51\00:26:45.37 without pain was from the elbow here, 00:26:45.40\00:26:47.26 this was her writing hand, right arm. 00:26:47.29\00:26:49.93 I can't move this arm yet, 00:26:49.96\00:26:51.00 "But thankfulness is constantly welling up in my heart, 00:26:51.03\00:26:54.08 my head is perfectly clear, and my memory undimmed." 00:26:54.11\00:26:56.88 I have something I can be thankful for. 00:26:56.91\00:26:58.86 Would you jot that down, please, number three. 00:26:58.89\00:27:00.87 Number three, In your suffering, give Him thanks. 00:27:00.90\00:27:04.45 In your suffering, look to Jesus, 00:27:04.48\00:27:05.96 in your suffering, talk to God. 00:27:05.99\00:27:07.68 In your suffering, give Him thanks. 00:27:07.71\00:27:11.52 May 14, "The past night has been 00:27:11.55\00:27:15.61 one of great tediousness. 00:27:15.64\00:27:17.36 I was obliged to get up six times 00:27:17.39\00:27:20.70 to change my position, for my back 00:27:20.73\00:27:22.20 and limbs were full of pain. 00:27:22.23\00:27:23.68 My neck was so painful 00:27:23.71\00:27:24.77 that it distressed me to lie on the pillow. 00:27:24.80\00:27:26.98 But the Lord is good, and He draws near to me 00:27:27.01\00:27:29.75 as I lift up my heart in prayer to Him, 00:27:29.78\00:27:31.88 beseeching Him for grace and for restoration to health. 00:27:31.91\00:27:35.32 I have a longing desire to get well." 00:27:35.35\00:27:37.29 And then she does, she does what the scriptures say to do. 00:27:40.30\00:27:44.22 You're suffering? 00:27:44.25\00:27:45.39 Watch what the scriptures say, put it on the screen for you. 00:27:45.42\00:27:47.34 This is-- this is James 5. 00:27:47.37\00:27:49.64 "Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray." 00:27:49.67\00:27:53.64 We don't pray alone, here it goes, 00:27:53.67\00:27:55.52 "Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing songs." 00:27:55.55\00:27:58.51 Next, "Is anyone among you sick? 00:27:58.54\00:28:00.91 Let her call for the elders of the church 00:28:00.94\00:28:03.12 and let them pray over her, 00:28:03.15\00:28:04.75 anointing her with oil in the name of the Lord." 00:28:04.78\00:28:06.88 Keep reading "And the prayer of faith will save the sick, 00:28:06.91\00:28:09.47 and the Lord will raise him up. 00:28:09.50\00:28:11.06 And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 00:28:11.09\00:28:13.52 Confess your trespasses to one another, 00:28:13.55\00:28:15.21 pray for one another, that you may be healed. 00:28:15.24\00:28:17.57 The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man 00:28:17.60\00:28:20.07 or a woman avails much." 00:28:20.10\00:28:23.49 Jot it down, will you, number four, 00:28:23.52\00:28:24.96 In your suffering, ask for prayer. 00:28:24.99\00:28:27.56 Some people are very private about this, 00:28:27.59\00:28:29.54 they'll be like, ah, listen, I don't like to tell anybody, 00:28:29.57\00:28:31.93 I don't want people to feel sorry for me. 00:28:31.96\00:28:34.65 That's a big mistake. 00:28:34.68\00:28:35.77 You should not be trying to suffer alone. 00:28:35.80\00:28:38.51 What's the point of it? 00:28:38.54\00:28:39.79 You'll get some little hero award for being private? 00:28:39.82\00:28:42.48 No, no, no, don't suffer alone. Ask others to join you. 00:28:42.51\00:28:45.65 Ask others to join you in praying. 00:28:45.68\00:28:51.33 Number four, In your suffering, ask for prayer. 00:28:51.36\00:28:54.72 All right, I'm gonna jump up to June 15 now, 00:28:54.75\00:29:00.41 "The night has been long and trying." 00:29:00.44\00:29:02.69 She says it over and over again, 00:29:02.72\00:29:03.97 those nights were tough. 00:29:04.00\00:29:05.82 "The night has been long and trying. 00:29:05.85\00:29:07.34 I lay awake from half past ten till half past two, 00:29:07.37\00:29:11.35 so full of nervous pain that I could not rest. 00:29:11.38\00:29:13.91 But I will not repine. 00:29:13.94\00:29:16.41 Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him." 00:29:16.44\00:29:22.68 In fact, you know, in keeping 00:29:22.71\00:29:24.74 with that invitation in James 5, 00:29:24.77\00:29:26.85 watch this, she calls for the elders of the church, 00:29:26.88\00:29:33.16 she calls for the pastors to come and pray for her. 00:29:33.19\00:29:36.42 I got it right here, 00:29:36.45\00:29:38.49 "The trying, almost sleepless night is ended. 00:29:38.52\00:29:42.28 Yesterday afternoon Pastor Daniells and his wife, 00:29:42.31\00:29:45.18 Pastor Tenney and his wife, and two men named 00:29:45.21\00:29:47.27 Stockton and Smith came to our house at my request 00:29:47.30\00:29:49.72 to pray that the Lord would heal me. 00:29:49.75\00:29:51.38 We had a most earnest season of prayer, 00:29:51.41\00:29:53.08 and we were all much blessed. 00:29:53.11\00:29:54.79 I was relieved" and you can tell, 00:29:54.82\00:29:56.84 she's just wishing she could write, 00:29:56.87\00:29:59.20 "I was relieved but not restored." 00:29:59.23\00:30:01.38 It will come up again and again, 00:30:01.41\00:30:02.53 why have I not been healed. 00:30:02.56\00:30:04.82 Some of you know what that's all about, don't you? 00:30:04.85\00:30:07.56 I was relieved, but not restored. 00:30:07.59\00:30:10.12 I have now done all that I can to follow the Bible directions, 00:30:10.15\00:30:12.53 and I shall wait for the Lord to work, 00:30:12.56\00:30:14.34 believing that in His own good time, He will heal me." 00:30:14.37\00:30:18.64 You just keep praying. 00:30:18.67\00:30:19.70 June 17, here's another principle that emerges, 00:30:24.10\00:30:28.54 I read this to you, all right, careful as I turn these pages, 00:30:28.57\00:30:34.46 June 17, here it is, 00:30:34.49\00:30:40.35 all right, one more, got it. 00:30:40.38\00:30:46.61 "During the past night I have slept but little." 00:30:46.64\00:30:50.36 Sounds like a broken record. 00:30:50.39\00:30:52.15 She isn't writing for you, or for me, this is her diary. 00:30:52.18\00:30:56.88 "The past night I have slept but little. 00:30:56.91\00:30:58.68 I tried to look to Jesus, to place my hands-- 00:30:58.71\00:31:01.58 to place myself rather in the hands of the great physician. 00:31:01.61\00:31:04.49 He has said, My grace is sufficient for thee. 00:31:04.52\00:31:07.16 The grace of Christ leads men to speak right words 00:31:07.19\00:31:09.97 under all circumstances. 00:31:10.00\00:31:11.57 Bodily suffering is no excuse for unchrist like actions." 00:31:11.60\00:31:16.06 That's something, you know, when I'm not feeling well, 00:31:16.09\00:31:18.26 look at Karen, look at everybody that I bump into, 00:31:18.29\00:31:20.79 because you're going to hear about it. 00:31:20.82\00:31:23.31 Bodily suffering tends to draw from us a really grouchy 00:31:23.34\00:31:27.37 and gripey spirit, doesn't it? 00:31:27.40\00:31:30.04 Isn't that something, bodily suffering 00:31:30.07\00:31:31.42 is no excuse to I for unchrist like words. 00:31:31.45\00:31:36.78 But isn't that something? 00:31:36.81\00:31:37.85 She says, "He said-- He has said, 00:31:37.88\00:31:40.13 My grace is sufficient for thee." 00:31:40.16\00:31:41.35 Let me show you where she got that, this is Paul suffering. 00:31:41.38\00:31:44.40 The great prophet and Apostle Paul, 00:31:44.43\00:31:45.93 2 Corinthians 12:7 00:31:45.96\00:31:47.86 "And lest I should be exalted above measure 00:31:47.89\00:31:49.83 by the abundance of the revelations" 00:31:49.86\00:31:51.82 he was receiving visions, all right, that's what prophets do. 00:31:51.85\00:31:54.08 They receive visions. 00:31:54.11\00:31:55.56 "A thorn in the flesh was given to me, 00:31:55.59\00:31:57.56 a messenger of Satan to buffet me, 00:31:57.59\00:31:59.79 lest I be exalted above measure." 00:31:59.82\00:32:01.98 Now watch this, "Concerning this thing 00:32:02.01\00:32:04.22 I pleaded with the Lord 00:32:04.25\00:32:05.96 three times that it might depart from me." 00:32:05.99\00:32:08.09 This is it, now I lay me down to sleep, 00:32:08.12\00:32:09.94 and, oh, by the way, heal me, God, 00:32:09.97\00:32:11.84 three of those prayers, are you kidding? 00:32:11.87\00:32:13.19 That is to the mat, facing the carpet with God, 00:32:13.22\00:32:15.90 I'm begging You'll heal me. 00:32:15.93\00:32:18.09 Heal me of this. 00:32:18.12\00:32:19.42 Three times, three times I begged Him 00:32:19.45\00:32:23.96 and what did He say to me? 00:32:23.99\00:32:25.82 "My grace" that's all she wrote, 00:32:25.85\00:32:27.45 she just scribbled this into her dairy 00:32:27.48\00:32:28.59 "My grace is sufficient for you, 00:32:28.62\00:32:31.01 for My strength is made perfect in weakness. 00:32:31.04\00:32:33.37 Therefore--" Paul, exclaims, "most gladly 00:32:33.40\00:32:36.51 I will rather boast in my infirmities 00:32:36.54\00:32:38.58 and in my sicknesses that the power of Christ 00:32:38.61\00:32:40.66 may rest upon me. 00:32:40.69\00:32:42.63 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, 00:32:42.66\00:32:45.95 in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake." 00:32:45.98\00:32:49.44 Now here's the principle "For when I am weak, 00:32:49.47\00:32:53.18 then I am strong." 00:32:53.21\00:32:54.46 Wow, how does that work? 00:32:54.49\00:32:55.90 Because when I am weak and I can't get myself through, 00:32:55.93\00:32:58.53 I lean hard on God and He comes shining through 00:32:58.56\00:33:01.83 'cause it isn't right anymore, and that's what's happening. 00:33:01.86\00:33:05.68 My grace is sufficient for you. 00:33:05.71\00:33:07.05 Would you jot that down, please. 00:33:07.08\00:33:08.57 Principle number five, there are only seven of these. 00:33:08.60\00:33:10.39 In your suffering, trust His grace. 00:33:10.42\00:33:12.88 What did we write? 00:33:12.91\00:33:13.94 In your suffering, give Him thanks. 00:33:13.97\00:33:16.01 In your suffering, ask for prayer. 00:33:16.04\00:33:17.55 In your suffering, trust His grace. 00:33:17.58\00:33:21.23 Now let me share this one, 00:33:21.26\00:33:23.21 this is June 20, so I go few pages up to June 20. 00:33:23.24\00:33:27.37 "I slept for the first part of the night, 00:33:27.40\00:33:29.31 but during the latter part I could not rest. 00:33:29.34\00:33:31.22 I committed my case to the Lord, 00:33:31.25\00:33:32.95 and was comforted by the thought 00:33:32.98\00:33:34.26 that I am a subject of His care. 00:33:34.29\00:33:36.11 I do find peace and comfort in prayer, 00:33:36.14\00:33:38.92 but I should look upon it as a great blessing from the Lord 00:33:38.95\00:33:41.56 if I could pass from the hours of the night in sleep." 00:33:41.59\00:33:43.87 You know what, God, it's really great 00:33:43.90\00:33:45.74 to have some time to pray with you, 00:33:45.77\00:33:46.80 but I would really rather sleep than pray. 00:33:46.83\00:33:49.37 Very candid, I mean, this sleep, 00:33:51.67\00:33:54.28 this prayer thing is gone on long enough now, 00:33:54.31\00:33:56.32 how about some rest? 00:33:56.35\00:33:58.51 That's what she's saying, 00:33:58.54\00:34:00.91 when the next time you have a night in your bed 00:34:00.94\00:34:02.34 and go to sleep and you are as wide awake 00:34:02.37\00:34:04.46 as you can possibly be. 00:34:04.49\00:34:06.54 Yeah, you know. 00:34:06.57\00:34:10.53 "I do find peace and comfort in prayer, 00:34:10.56\00:34:14.39 but I should look upon it as a great blessing from the Lord 00:34:14.42\00:34:16.39 if I could pass the hours of the night in sleep. 00:34:16.42\00:34:17.95 These words comfort and strengthen me. 00:34:17.98\00:34:19.62 'Be therefore renewed in the spirit of your mind.'" 00:34:19.65\00:34:23.35 That begins in one diary entry 00:34:23.38\00:34:25.98 a series of seven biblical quotations, 00:34:26.01\00:34:29.08 no references, she just quotes them. 00:34:29.11\00:34:31.04 She's been memorizing scriptures, 00:34:31.07\00:34:32.16 she scribbles them into her dairy, 00:34:32.19\00:34:34.58 that leads us to principle number 6. 00:34:34.61\00:34:36.39 Would you jot this down, please. 00:34:36.42\00:34:37.48 In your suffering, read His Word. 00:34:37.51\00:34:41.20 She was saturated in the word. 00:34:41.23\00:34:42.63 She kept going back to the book, 00:34:42.66\00:34:44.06 to the Bible, to the Bible. 00:34:44.09\00:34:46.11 In your suffering, read His word. 00:34:46.14\00:34:50.67 All right. 00:34:50.70\00:34:52.10 One, two, three, just two more now, one last principle, 00:34:52.13\00:34:56.50 and I'm going to June 30 to get this one, 00:34:56.53\00:34:59.78 and I read this to you, June 30. 00:34:59.81\00:35:02.45 "Another night has nearly passed." 00:35:02.48\00:35:04.06 Remember I told you the secretary 00:35:04.09\00:35:05.13 has typed this up and then she went back over them 00:35:05.16\00:35:06.91 and made little emendations. 00:35:06.94\00:35:09.50 She did here, "Another night has nearly passed" 00:35:09.53\00:35:12.35 was what she originally wrote in her diary, then she wrote, 00:35:12.38\00:35:14.61 "Another night of great weariness" 00:35:14.64\00:35:16.77 she scribbles that in her handwriting-- 00:35:16.80\00:35:18.34 great weariness has nearly passed. 00:35:18.37\00:35:20.16 "Although I continue to suffer much pain, 00:35:20.19\00:35:22.08 I know that I am not forsaken by God." 00:35:22.11\00:35:25.75 Later, when she rereads it, she strikes out the name God 00:35:25.78\00:35:28.62 and she writes "I know that I am 00:35:28.65\00:35:30.59 not forsaken by my Savior." 00:35:30.62\00:35:33.25 They're very personal, intensity in this suffering 00:35:33.28\00:35:37.37 through which she journeys. 00:35:37.40\00:35:39.19 "My prayer is, Help me, Jesus, that I may not dishonor 00:35:39.22\00:35:42.54 Thee with my lips. 00:35:42.57\00:35:43.81 Let no unkind words be spoken by me." 00:35:43.84\00:35:48.57 Wow. 00:35:48.60\00:35:49.65 Here it comes, here is the last entry, 00:35:49.68\00:35:51.97 that I'm reading to you. 00:35:52.00\00:35:53.30 This is July 15, 00:35:53.33\00:35:57.52 "The Lord has brought me through another night. 00:35:57.55\00:36:02.41 I did not sleep well. 00:36:02.44\00:36:05.69 The weather this winter" remember in July, 00:36:05.72\00:36:08.50 it's winter in Australia, 00:36:08.53\00:36:10.38 summer here, but winter down there. 00:36:10.41\00:36:12.42 The weather this winter has not been unpleasant, 00:36:12.45\00:36:14.76 but the air is very penetrating, 00:36:14.79\00:36:16.58 and I cannot manage to keep comfortably warm 00:36:16.61\00:36:18.75 in these high rooms," apparently high ceilings 00:36:18.78\00:36:20.70 "with only a grate fire." 00:36:20.73\00:36:21.96 Little fire in the grate, "I have had two severe chills, 00:36:21.99\00:36:24.88 and this has greatly increased the lameness 00:36:24.91\00:36:26.44 in my shoulders and hips." 00:36:26.47\00:36:27.68 Listen, "But notwithstanding this, 00:36:27.71\00:36:30.03 I was able to spend most of yesterday 00:36:30.06\00:36:32.30 writing on the life of Christ." 00:36:32.33\00:36:34.82 Now may I hit the pause button right here 00:36:34.85\00:36:36.64 in this little interjection, 00:36:36.67\00:36:41.41 one of the profound gifts of God through Ellen White 00:36:41.44\00:36:44.92 as a result of this intense season of suffering 00:36:44.95\00:36:48.03 was the eventual completion of her magnum opus 00:36:48.06\00:36:51.05 entitled The Desire Of Ages. 00:36:51.08\00:36:53.66 The greatest book, bar none, that I have read 00:36:53.69\00:36:56.69 on the life of Jesus and George Barna 00:36:56.72\00:36:58.56 when he surveys his clergy, 00:36:58.59\00:37:01.30 the Christian demographer discovers that 40 00:37:01.33\00:37:03.79 and under clergy list Ellen White as one-- 00:37:03.82\00:37:06.76 all denominations by the way, 00:37:06.79\00:37:08.41 40 and under clergy list Ellen White 00:37:08.44\00:37:10.54 as one of theauthors they turn to, 00:37:10.57\00:37:13.15 amazing and I know, it's the book Desire Of Ages. 00:37:13.18\00:37:16.62 Classic, next time you and I are together, 00:37:16.65\00:37:19.70 it will be an opportunity to get that book. 00:37:19.73\00:37:22.97 So here she is, intense suffering 00:37:23.00\00:37:26.19 but could it be that through her own pain 00:37:26.22\00:37:28.25 the divine suffering and passion of her Lord 00:37:28.28\00:37:30.22 was refracted. 00:37:30.25\00:37:34.27 Could it be the Desire Of Ages has become 00:37:34.30\00:37:36.66 the inspirational classic that it has 00:37:36.69\00:37:41.74 because of this season, 00:37:41.77\00:37:44.04 the suffering in the life of the author, 00:37:44.07\00:37:47.01 one wonders. 00:37:47.04\00:37:49.25 So she writes here but not withstanding this, 00:37:49.28\00:37:51.36 "By suffering I was able to spend most of yesterday 00:37:51.39\00:37:53.14 writing on the life of Christ." 00:37:53.17\00:37:54.38 Now listen to this, this is the principle number seven, 00:37:54.41\00:37:56.85 "I praise the Lord because I feel a nearness to my Savior. 00:37:56.88\00:38:00.86 My faith feeds on the rich promises of God, 00:38:00.89\00:38:03.50 which are full of comfort and hope." 00:38:03.53\00:38:05.10 And then she starts singing, 00:38:05.13\00:38:06.48 how do we know she started singing 00:38:06.51\00:38:08.05 because with her pen, 00:38:08.08\00:38:09.33 it was all fountain pens back then, 00:38:09.36\00:38:10.55 with her pen, 00:38:10.58\00:38:11.61 she starts writing the words of Charles Wesley, 00:38:11.64\00:38:13.99 remember, she grew up in the Methodist Church. 00:38:14.02\00:38:16.49 Charles Wesley, the beloved hymn writer, 00:38:16.52\00:38:18.95 she starts writing, you can see that pen scratching 00:38:18.98\00:38:21.09 across the parchment. 00:38:21.12\00:38:22.39 "Jesus, lover of my soul 00:38:22.42\00:38:25.98 Let me to Thy bosom fly 00:38:26.01\00:38:28.67 While the billows near me roll 00:38:28.70\00:38:30.52 While the tempest still is high 00:38:30.55\00:38:32.77 Hide me, O my Savior, hide! 00:38:32.80\00:38:35.33 Till the storm of life is past 00:38:35.36\00:38:37.89 Safe into the haven guide 00:38:37.92\00:38:39.93 O, receive my soul at last 00:38:39.96\00:38:42.48 You know when I learn a hymn, I'll get the first stanza, 00:38:42.51\00:38:44.84 everything else is gone. 00:38:44.87\00:38:46.20 I don't know any other stanzas. 00:38:46.23\00:38:48.05 She breaks out into the second stanza, 00:38:48.08\00:38:49.36 she keeps writing. 00:38:49.39\00:38:50.42 Other refuge have I none Hangs my helpless soul on Thee, 00:38:50.45\00:38:55.51 Leave, O leave me not alone, Still support and comfort me 00:38:55.54\00:39:00.19 All my trust on Thee is stayed, All my help from Thee I bring 00:39:00.22\00:39:05.32 Cover my defenseless head, With the shadow of Thy wing 00:39:05.35\00:39:12.51 The memorized words of Charles Wesley 00:39:12.54\00:39:15.73 entered into her diary, 00:39:15.76\00:39:17.63 there it is, principle number 7, 00:39:17.66\00:39:19.15 jot it down, In your suffering, sing His praise. 00:39:19.18\00:39:24.40 Sing His praise. 00:39:24.43\00:39:26.69 Start singing when you're feeling the worst, 00:39:26.72\00:39:29.69 start singing, and see if the spirit of Christ 00:39:29.72\00:39:33.09 doesn't begin to leave, leave you 00:39:33.12\00:39:39.04 higher than the pain that has been your focus. 00:39:39.07\00:39:42.97 But interestingly as soon as she's finished
