00:06:53.43\00:07:01.37 Let's pray. 00:07:22.60\00:07:25.55 Oh Lord, Bradley's prayer is our prayer. 00:07:25.58\00:07:28.76 Please, Lord, 00:07:28.79\00:07:31.95 make me an instrument of thy peace 00:07:31.98\00:07:38.20 especially today with this subject. 00:07:38.23\00:07:43.27 We pray in Jesus name, amen. 00:07:43.30\00:07:47.43 Now early in the morning Jesus came again into the temple 00:07:51.28\00:07:56.85 and all the people came to Him 00:07:56.88\00:07:59.91 and He sat down and taught them. 00:07:59.94\00:08:03.92 Then the Scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him 00:08:03.95\00:08:06.63 a woman caught in adultery. 00:08:06.66\00:08:10.85 When they had set her in the midst 00:08:10.88\00:08:13.09 they said to Him, "Teacher, 00:08:13.12\00:08:15.73 this woman was caught in adultery in the very act." 00:08:15.76\00:08:20.95 In 1850 the New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne 00:08:23.99\00:08:28.43 composed what some considered 00:08:28.46\00:08:29.83 to be the greatest single piece of American literature, 00:08:29.86\00:08:35.99 "The Scarlet Letter." 00:08:36.02\00:08:38.35 You had to read it in high school. 00:08:38.38\00:08:41.92 And a tale set in Puritan Village 00:08:41.95\00:08:43.75 outside Boston in the 1640s. 00:08:43.78\00:08:48.43 A tale of a young woman named Hester Prynne, 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.35 her out-of-wedlock infant daughter Pearl, 00:08:50.38\00:08:55.04 the father of the baby a Puritan minister 00:08:55.07\00:08:58.77 named Arthur Dimmesdale and an aged physician 00:08:58.80\00:09:03.47 named Roger Chillingworth. 00:09:03.50\00:09:07.54 In that tale of "The Scarlet Letter," 00:09:07.57\00:09:09.81 Hawthorne masterfully composes the clashing 00:09:09.84\00:09:13.44 moralities of our fragile humanity. 00:09:13.47\00:09:17.30 Guilt and sin, confession offered, 00:09:17.33\00:09:20.87 forgiveness denied, sowing and reaping, 00:09:20.90\00:09:24.23 revenge and redemption. 00:09:24.26\00:09:27.01 And all of it is mysteriously 00:09:27.04\00:09:28.68 as you remember woven into a single piece of fabric. 00:09:28.71\00:09:33.48 As Hawthorne described it a rag of scarlet cloth 00:09:33.51\00:09:36.52 that assume the shape of a letter, 00:09:36.55\00:09:38.73 the capital letter 'A' for adultery. 00:09:38.76\00:09:44.94 Hester Prynne a young woman 00:09:44.97\00:09:46.06 condemned to wear that scarlet letter 00:09:46.09\00:09:48.06 as a sign of her private fall and her public shame. 00:09:48.09\00:09:51.36 And Arthur Dimmesdale the minister 00:09:51.39\00:09:54.04 will bare the scarlet letter too. 00:09:54.07\00:09:56.69 Though for him it is a secret, 00:09:56.72\00:09:58.16 somehow mysteriously shaped 00:09:58.19\00:10:00.07 onto the pale flesh of his chest. 00:10:00.10\00:10:04.29 By the time the story is over 00:10:04.32\00:10:06.07 all four protagonists are indicted. 00:10:06.10\00:10:11.06 The Scarlet Letter, 00:10:11.09\00:10:15.61 "Now early in the morning 00:10:15.64\00:10:19.26 Jesus came again into the temple, 00:10:19.29\00:10:20.74 and all the people came to Him 00:10:20.77\00:10:22.17 and He sat down and taught them. 00:10:22.20\00:10:24.22 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought to Him 00:10:24.25\00:10:26.28 a woman caught in adultery. 00:10:26.31\00:10:28.16 And when they had set her in the midst, 00:10:28.19\00:10:29.56 they said to Him, Teacher, 00:10:29.59\00:10:31.30 this woman was caught in adultery in the very act." 00:10:31.33\00:10:36.16 Didn't Nathaniel Hawthorne draw his inspiration 00:10:36.19\00:10:38.34 from John Chapter 8? 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.27 Probably not. 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.59 And yet in the early morning shadows 00:10:42.62\00:10:44.36 of this sunlit temple scene 00:10:44.39\00:10:48.36 all of the characters where the Scarlet Letter save one 00:10:48.39\00:10:54.94 and it's that save one who is the saving one 00:10:54.97\00:10:58.93 for you and me and our private scarlet letters. 00:10:58.96\00:11:05.06 Open your Bible with me please to the fourth gospel. 00:11:05.09\00:11:09.29 We're back in John again today. 00:11:09.32\00:11:10.83 Open your Bible please to John Chapter 8 narrative. 00:11:15.98\00:11:21.67 This is the last word of our series 00:11:21.70\00:11:24.70 this semester only two pieces left. 00:11:24.73\00:11:26.21 Unbelievable, how the time has flown by. 00:11:26.24\00:11:28.43 Title of today's teaching, The Scarlet Letter. 00:11:28.46\00:11:31.37 Those of you who are watching 00:11:31.40\00:11:32.52 on television you can see that website there 00:11:50.76\00:11:52.91 Ushers, thank you. 00:11:52.94\00:11:55.71 This is a very sensitive subject... 00:11:55.74\00:11:58.04 but we can't escape it. 00:12:01.37\00:12:02.80 John 8 is the next passage for us in our journey 00:12:02.83\00:12:05.67 through the last word of fourth gospel 00:12:05.70\00:12:08.43 and so hold you hand up. 00:12:08.46\00:12:09.85 In the balcony hold your hand up, 00:12:09.88\00:12:11.15 if you're sitting overflow hold your hand up. 00:12:11.18\00:12:14.95 Make sure you get the study guide. 00:12:14.98\00:12:17.55 All right, let's go John Chapter 8, 00:12:17.58\00:12:18.77 I'll be in the New King James Version. 00:12:18.80\00:12:20.20 By the way if you didn't bring a Bible 00:12:20.23\00:12:21.40 this is one narrative you want to track. 00:12:21.43\00:12:23.41 Pull the pew Bible out in front of you. 00:12:23.44\00:12:24.98 It will be Page 720 in your pew Bible. 00:12:25.01\00:12:27.45 Let us go right now John 8:2 00:12:27.48\00:12:30.29 "Now early in the morning 00:12:30.32\00:12:33.20 Jesus came again into the temple, 00:12:33.23\00:12:35.99 and all the people came to Him, 00:12:36.02\00:12:37.05 and He sat down and He taught them." 00:12:37.08\00:12:39.50 I mean, he tried to picture this scene 00:12:39.53\00:12:40.84 the golden rays picking up the dust flakes in the air, 00:12:40.87\00:12:47.09 streaming through the colonnades 00:12:47.12\00:12:48.87 of that magnificent piece of architecture in Jerusalem, 00:12:48.90\00:12:52.65 a mighty temple. 00:12:52.68\00:12:54.61 It's like it's the day 00:12:54.64\00:12:55.70 after Thanksgiving Wal-Mart sale. 00:12:55.73\00:12:57.96 People have been lined up as it were all night 00:12:57.99\00:13:01.48 to be on this now crowded courtyard. 00:13:01.51\00:13:05.59 The plaza chocked with people. 00:13:05.62\00:13:07.36 You know, why the people come, 00:13:07.39\00:13:09.95 because the God that this young Teacher, 00:13:09.98\00:13:12.82 Healer, Messiah keeps teaching about. 00:13:12.85\00:13:15.58 He's such an attractive God. 00:13:15.61\00:13:17.14 He is not somebody to be afraid of, 00:13:17.17\00:13:18.81 He is somebody to be a friend of. 00:13:18.84\00:13:20.57 And the masses are drawn to that picture. 00:13:20.60\00:13:24.42 So there He is Jesus early morning 00:13:24.45\00:13:26.45 sun streaming on to that pastoral scene. 00:13:26.48\00:13:32.19 "Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, 00:13:32.22\00:13:34.47 and all the people came to Him, 00:13:34.50\00:13:35.60 and He sat down and He taught them." 00:13:35.63\00:13:36.94 Now here it comes verse 3 "Then the scribes 00:13:36.97\00:13:39.66 and the Pharisees brought to Him 00:13:39.69\00:13:41.44 a woman caught in adultery." 00:13:41.47\00:13:43.53 And I wish you hit the pause button right there 00:13:43.56\00:13:45.25 before we finish that text 00:13:45.28\00:13:46.40 because some of you have a newer translation. 00:13:46.43\00:13:49.29 And you're noticing that the story 00:13:49.32\00:13:50.61 is bracketed in your Bible 00:13:50.64\00:13:52.40 or it might be in italics and you're wondering. 00:13:52.43\00:13:54.59 Hey, wait a minute Dwight, is this really legit? 00:13:54.62\00:13:57.25 Is this a fair story to be sharing? 00:13:57.28\00:13:59.77 I've done the research. 00:13:59.80\00:14:00.84 Let me tell you that scholars 00:14:00.87\00:14:02.00 almost to a man agree that the story is authentic. 00:14:02.03\00:14:06.84 The big question is does the story 00:14:06.87\00:14:09.41 belong here in the fourth gospel. 00:14:09.44\00:14:11.87 Many scholars feel that they are to be tucked 00:14:11.90\00:14:14.14 into Luke 21 in that narrative. 00:14:14.17\00:14:17.26 There's a word here 00:14:17.29\00:14:18.47 that John never uses in his entire gospel. 00:14:18.50\00:14:21.12 We just read it, scribes. 00:14:21.15\00:14:23.19 He's had a hundred opportunities 00:14:23.22\00:14:25.09 to use the words scribes but he is never used it. 00:14:25.12\00:14:27.72 This is the only place 00:14:27.75\00:14:29.01 and how could it be an importation. 00:14:29.04\00:14:32.05 Maybe John didn't write it though the story is authentic. 00:14:32.08\00:14:35.80 Verse 3 "And then the scribes and the Pharisees 00:14:35.83\00:14:39.16 brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. 00:14:39.19\00:14:41.53 And when they had set her in the midst." 00:14:41.56\00:14:46.17 Verse 4 "They said to Him, 00:14:46.20\00:14:49.24 'Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, 00:14:49.27\00:14:53.81 in the very act,'" 00:14:53.84\00:14:56.05 Read, we caught her in bed 00:14:56.08\00:14:58.92 with the man who is not her husband. 00:14:58.95\00:15:01.41 Now we're glad we found You 00:15:01.44\00:15:04.13 so early in the morning here in the temple. 00:15:04.16\00:15:05.87 We have a question for You. 00:15:05.90\00:15:07.55 Now verse 5 "Moses, in the law, 00:15:07.58\00:15:11.64 commanded us that such should be stone. 00:15:11.67\00:15:14.82 But what do You have to say?" 00:15:14.85\00:15:18.78 Well, number one, ladies and gentlemen, 00:15:18.81\00:15:20.08 let's just get the record straight these experts 00:15:20.11\00:15:21.99 in the law are not correct about the Law of Moses. 00:15:22.02\00:15:26.93 It was a husband's role, not their role. 00:15:26.96\00:15:28.96 It's a husband's role. 00:15:28.99\00:15:30.02 You got an issue bring your spouse. 00:15:30.05\00:15:32.64 It was a husband's role to do what they're doing. 00:15:32.67\00:15:34.65 And by the way, never to a public shaming 00:15:34.68\00:15:37.17 like this temple scene, this is way off 00:15:37.20\00:15:40.10 the playbook of the mosaic court. 00:15:40.13\00:15:42.80 And also by the way, the Mosaic Law was clear, 00:15:42.83\00:15:45.23 "Both adulteress parties were to be brought." 00:15:45.26\00:15:48.92 Where is that guy? 00:15:48.95\00:15:50.49 So often we turn on the woman. 00:15:50.52\00:15:52.08 Where's the guy? 00:15:52.11\00:15:53.28 You can't have adultery with just her. 00:15:53.31\00:15:56.54 Where's the guy? 00:15:56.57\00:15:58.82 Oh, conveniently forgotten and left behind. 00:15:58.85\00:16:03.08 Now it's true, the Mosaic Law does declare 00:16:03.11\00:16:05.20 that if you have the scarlet letter "A" 00:16:05.23\00:16:08.35 upon your garb the sentence is death. 00:16:08.38\00:16:11.39 If you're a woman and you're betrothed 00:16:11.42\00:16:13.48 that means little higher level of engagement, 00:16:13.51\00:16:16.29 you're engaged and you're caught 00:16:16.32\00:16:17.84 with another man, death by stoning. 00:16:17.87\00:16:20.72 Mosaic Law however does not delineate the death 00:16:20.75\00:16:24.54 if she's married. 00:16:24.57\00:16:25.83 It's obvious that not only have they twisted the law 00:16:29.14\00:16:33.35 these religious leaders but the fact is this is no trial 00:16:33.38\00:16:38.79 for the scarlet letter adulterous. 00:16:38.82\00:16:40.35 They could careless about that woman, 00:16:40.38\00:16:42.07 this is a trial of Jesus, this is a test, this is a trap. 00:16:42.10\00:16:47.65 They got Him, this is the perfect storm of a perfect trap 00:16:47.68\00:16:51.16 because if Jesus said and they're banking 00:16:51.19\00:16:53.44 that He's gonna say this. 00:16:53.47\00:16:54.50 If Jesus says you know what, guys, 00:16:54.53\00:16:56.37 lay off, give this woman a break. 00:16:56.40\00:16:58.63 Boom, they turn to the masses 00:16:58.66\00:17:00.92 who're choking that-- that temple plaza. 00:17:00.95\00:17:03.30 We told you, no reference for the Law of Moses. 00:17:03.33\00:17:05.97 If however Jesus would surprise them 00:17:06.00\00:17:07.54 they says okay, good point, take her out, death. 00:17:07.57\00:17:11.34 They go to racing the Pilate. 00:17:11.37\00:17:12.64 Here is this young upstart 00:17:12.67\00:17:14.37 who is taking the prerogative of the Roman Empire, 00:17:14.40\00:17:16.27 capital punishment into His own hands. 00:17:16.30\00:17:18.00 They got Him yes or no. 00:17:18.03\00:17:19.58 Damned if you do, damned if you don't, 00:17:19.61\00:17:22.03 perfect storm of a perfect trap. 00:17:22.06\00:17:24.75 What say you, young teacher? 00:17:24.78\00:17:28.03 Verse 6 "This they said, testing Him, 00:17:31.14\00:17:35.35 that they might have something of which to accuse Him. 00:17:35.38\00:17:38.70 But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground 00:17:38.73\00:17:43.09 with His finger, as though He did not hear." 00:17:43.12\00:17:47.68 Sometimes it's okay to play deaf. 00:17:48.52\00:17:52.00 Let me read of bit a behind the scenes 00:17:54.35\00:17:58.08 depiction in this inspirational classic 00:17:58.11\00:18:00.44 on the life of Jesus, The Desire of Ages. 00:18:00.47\00:18:02.18 I'll put it on the screen for you. 00:18:02.21\00:18:04.29 "Jesus looked for a moment upon the scene-- 00:18:04.32\00:18:07.06 the trembling victim in her shame, 00:18:07.09\00:18:08.83 the hard-faced dignitaries, 00:18:08.86\00:18:10.22 devoid of even human pity. 00:18:10.25\00:18:12.78 Jesus spirit of stainless purity shrank from the spectacle. 00:18:12.81\00:18:16.36 Well He knew for what purpose 00:18:16.39\00:18:18.63 this case had been brought to Him. 00:18:18.66\00:18:19.83 He read the heart, He knew the character 00:18:19.86\00:18:21.42 and life history of everyone in His presence. 00:18:21.45\00:18:23.71 These would be guardians of justice 00:18:23.74\00:18:26.33 had themselves led their victim into sin," 00:18:26.36\00:18:30.42 it's called entrapment. 00:18:30.45\00:18:34.17 "That they might lay a snare for Jesus. 00:18:34.20\00:18:36.41 Giving no sign that He had heard their question, 00:18:36.44\00:18:38.88 He stooped, and fixing His eyes on the ground, 00:18:38.91\00:18:41.62 began to write in the dust. 00:18:41.65\00:18:43.54 Impatient and His delay an apparent indifference, 00:18:43.57\00:18:45.95 the accusers drew nearer, urging the matter." 00:18:45.98\00:18:47.40 Come on, come on answer us. 00:18:47.43\00:18:48.46 Oh, come on, what you're talking this, talk, talk. 00:18:48.49\00:18:51.12 "Urging the matter upon his attention. 00:18:51.15\00:18:52.84 But as their eyes, following those in Jesus, 00:18:52.87\00:18:56.17 fell upon the pavement at His feet, 00:18:56.20\00:18:58.21 their countenances changed. 00:18:58.24\00:19:01.14 There, traced before them, 00:19:01.17\00:19:02.90 with the guilty secrets of their own lives. 00:19:02.93\00:19:05.14 The people, looking on, saw the sudden change 00:19:05.17\00:19:07.16 in expression, and pressed forward to discover 00:19:07.19\00:19:09.33 what it was that they were regarding 00:19:09.36\00:19:11.12 with such astonishment and shame." 00:19:11.15\00:19:13.21 Can you see it, what did He write? 00:19:13.24\00:19:15.36 What a stunning portray of God right here. 00:19:19.78\00:19:24.74 You think about it, there're only two times 00:19:24.77\00:19:26.04 in the Bible where the Bible specifically says 00:19:26.07\00:19:28.55 "God wrote with His finger." 00:19:28.58\00:19:29.99 There's a third time, but it doesn't say, He did it. 00:19:30.02\00:19:31.95 It could have been an angel. 00:19:31.98\00:19:33.31 Two times once for this finger atop 00:19:33.34\00:19:35.03 that shale summit of Mount Sinai 00:19:35.06\00:19:37.10 when He carves into the stone 00:19:37.13\00:19:39.55 and eternal law nobody can erase this for as long as time lasts 00:19:39.58\00:19:43.73 with His finger the Ten Commandments, 00:19:43.76\00:19:45.69 the perfect code for human happiness. 00:19:45.72\00:19:47.58 The other time you got it right here 00:19:47.61\00:19:51.22 and isn't that amazing, isn't that amazing 00:19:51.25\00:19:55.26 that God himself made flesh 00:19:55.29\00:19:57.92 will not embarrassed even His enemies. 00:19:57.95\00:20:03.38 He puts it in the dust, 00:20:03.41\00:20:04.85 so that one and the record is gone. 00:20:04.88\00:20:08.17 Amazing Grace as John Newton put it 00:20:09.96\00:20:12.64 Amazing Love and as Charles Wesley sang it. 00:20:12.67\00:20:16.23 What a God we have just seen. 00:20:16.26\00:20:19.16 Verse 7 "So when they continued" 00:20:23.98\00:20:27.02 they are not willing to take no for an answer 00:20:27.05\00:20:29.74 or silence for an answer. 00:20:29.77\00:20:30.80 "When they continued asking Him, 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.77 Jesus raised Himself up and He said to them." All right. 00:20:32.80\00:20:36.96 "He who is without sin among you, 00:20:39.35\00:20:42.80 let him throw a stone at her first." 00:20:42.83\00:20:45.54 Verse 8 "And again He stooped down 00:20:48.58\00:20:50.28 and wrote on the ground. 00:20:50.31\00:20:52.58 Then those who heard it, 00:20:52.61\00:20:54.16 being convicted by their conscience, 00:20:54.19\00:20:57.13 went out one by one, 00:20:57.16\00:20:58.62 beginning with the oldest even to the last. 00:20:58.65\00:21:01.91 And Jesus was left alone, 00:21:01.94\00:21:03.91 and the woman standing in the midst. 00:21:03.94\00:21:10.00 And when Jesus has raised Himself up 00:21:10.03\00:21:12.42 and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, 00:21:12.45\00:21:15.20 'Woman, where are those accusers of yours? 00:21:15.23\00:21:18.49 Has no one condemned you?'" 00:21:18.52\00:21:22.78 She stands in the posture of shame, 00:21:22.81\00:21:25.88 her eyes glued to the temple floor, 00:21:25.91\00:21:29.50 her hair disheveled. 00:21:29.53\00:21:31.34 Remember, they dragged her out of bed. 00:21:31.37\00:21:35.20 Her mascara leaving dark trails 00:21:35.23\00:21:38.66 because of the tears to her bruised cheeks. 00:21:38.69\00:21:43.63 I imagine Jesus steps forward to that woman 00:21:43.66\00:21:47.30 and He takes her little chin 00:21:47.33\00:21:52.11 and He raises her from the posture of shame 00:21:52.14\00:21:54.42 until she's looking at Him in His eyes. 00:21:54.45\00:21:58.81 Woman, where are they? 00:21:58.84\00:22:03.88 Where are your accusers, there's no one condemned you? 00:22:03.91\00:22:07.34 You see the woman was convinced. 00:22:07.37\00:22:09.77 Well, it was the death sentence 00:22:09.80\00:22:11.56 when she heard this Teacher say, all right, 00:22:11.59\00:22:13.98 the one without sin you throw the first stone, 00:22:14.01\00:22:15.98 she cringed instinctively. 00:22:16.01\00:22:17.60 This is it, this is death by stoning. 00:22:17.63\00:22:20.75 She had no idea what Jesus 00:22:20.78\00:22:22.35 has just written on that dusty floor. 00:22:22.38\00:22:24.82 She has no idea that there is only 00:22:24.85\00:22:27.01 one sinless one in that circle 00:22:27.04\00:22:29.58 and as it turns out He is on her side. 00:22:29.61\00:22:32.03 Where are your accusers? 00:22:35.34\00:22:38.41 Anybody condemned you? 00:22:38.44\00:22:40.70 And she responds, verse 11 "She said, 'No one, Lord.' 00:22:40.73\00:22:46.17 And Jesus said to her, 'Neither do I condemn you, 00:22:46.20\00:22:51.62 go and sin no more.'" 00:22:51.65\00:22:55.71 I love this from Desire of Ages. 00:22:55.74\00:22:57.12 Can I put it on the screen for you, take a look at this. 00:22:57.15\00:22:59.02 Her heart--at that moment "Her heart was melted, 00:22:59.05\00:23:01.98 and she cast herself at the feet of Jesus 00:23:02.01\00:23:04.65 sobbing out her grateful love 00:23:04.68\00:23:06.62 and with bitter tears confessing her sins. 00:23:06.65\00:23:09.63 This was to her the beginning of a new life, 00:23:09.66\00:23:12.35 a life of purity and peace, 00:23:12.38\00:23:13.74 devoted to the service of God. 00:23:13.77\00:23:15.61 In the uplifting." 00:23:15.64\00:23:16.67 Listen, "In the up lifting of this fallen soul, 00:23:16.70\00:23:19.39 Jesus performed a greater miracle 00:23:19.42\00:23:21.88 that in healing the most grievous physical disease, 00:23:21.91\00:23:25.06 for He cured the spiritual malady 00:23:25.09\00:23:27.71 which is unto death everlasting. 00:23:27.74\00:23:31.22 This penitent woman became 00:23:31.25\00:23:32.81 one of His most steadfast followers. 00:23:32.84\00:23:35.35 With self-sacrificing love and devotion 00:23:35.38\00:23:37.93 she repaid His forgiving mercy." 00:23:37.96\00:23:42.40 And the scarlet letter was ripped 00:23:42.43\00:23:46.64 from off her heart. 00:23:46.67\00:23:50.93 Wow, 00:23:50.96\00:23:54.48 the scarlet letter of adultery. 00:23:54.51\00:23:58.19 Don't you wish all sexual sin where that easy to deal with? 00:23:58.22\00:24:05.63 But then many maybe, maybe it is. 00:24:05.66\00:24:12.10 What do we have here, we have the scarlet letter 00:24:12.13\00:24:14.63 with the scarlet sinner we have the scarlet Savior. 00:24:14.66\00:24:19.72 But then maybe you're saying hey, listen Dwight, please. 00:24:19.75\00:24:22.77 I'm not, I'm-- We're not sexual sinners here, 00:24:22.80\00:24:25.84 we're not sinners with sexual sins. 00:24:25.87\00:24:28.35 We hardly need a scarlet Savior. 00:24:28.38\00:24:32.19 Is that right? 00:24:32.22\00:24:34.61 I'm gonna share with you now a couple of emails 00:24:34.64\00:24:36.24 I've received over the last three to four weeks. 00:24:36.27\00:24:40.81 Email number one is from somebody 00:24:40.84\00:24:42.21 within our community here. 00:24:42.24\00:24:45.56 Listen to this. 00:24:45.59\00:24:47.81 Apparently there is an STD clinic 00:24:47.84\00:24:50.93 in South Bend where people 00:24:50.96\00:24:53.62 with Sexually Transmitted Diseases, 00:24:53.65\00:24:55.53 STD, where people with Sexually Transmitted Diseases 00:24:55.56\00:24:59.23 go for treatment. 00:24:59.26\00:25:01.75 And according to this individual research 00:25:01.78\00:25:03.77 has been done at that clinic in South Bend 00:25:03.80\00:25:07.00 only to discover that there are students 00:25:07.03\00:25:09.82 from campuses all over the region 00:25:09.85\00:25:13.19 who go to that clinic for their treatments. 00:25:13.22\00:25:16.66 One of those campuses is the campus 00:25:19.75\00:25:23.86 we're worshipping on right now. 00:25:23.89\00:25:28.69 Come on, Dwight, you know, 00:25:28.72\00:25:30.64 this faulty research it can't be, 00:25:30.67\00:25:32.90 it can't be our students. 00:25:32.93\00:25:34.77 Listen to this piece. 00:25:38.66\00:25:40.03 I've got this from CNN, 00:25:40.06\00:25:41.64 there's Belief Blog, just this week. 00:25:41.67\00:25:43.79 Why young Christians aren't waiting anymore? 00:25:49.44\00:25:54.94 John Blake. "True love doesn't wait after all." 00:25:54.97\00:25:58.34 That's the implication in the upcoming October issue. 00:25:58.37\00:26:02.27 So this came out about a month ago. 00:26:02.30\00:26:04.26 "The upcoming October issue of an evangelical magazine 00:26:04.29\00:26:07.47 that claims that young unmarried Christians 00:26:07.50\00:26:09.60 are having premarital sex almost as much as 00:26:09.63\00:26:13.01 their non-Christian peers. 00:26:13.04\00:26:16.44 The article in Relevant magazine" 00:26:16.47\00:26:18.03 that's the title of magazine 00:26:18.06\00:26:19.10 "entitled 'Almost everyone's doing it,' 00:26:19.13\00:26:22.18 cited several studies examining 00:26:22.21\00:26:23.51 in the sexual activity of single Christians, 00:26:23.54\00:26:25.66 one of the biggest surprises was a December 2009 study 00:26:25.69\00:26:28.79 conducted by National Campaign 00:26:28.82\00:26:30.21 to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 00:26:30.24\00:26:32.33 which included information on sexual activity. 00:26:32.36\00:26:36.18 While the study's primary report did not explore religion, 00:26:36.21\00:26:38.80 some additional analysis focusing 00:26:38.83\00:26:40.61 on sexual activity and religious identification 00:26:40.64\00:26:43.73 yielded this result, 00:26:43.76\00:26:45.68 80% of unmarried evangelical young adults 18 to 29 said 00:26:45.71\00:26:50.54 that they have had sex," 80%. 00:26:50.57\00:26:54.49 Evangelical means conservative-- 00:26:54.52\00:26:59.28 "Slightly less than the 88% of unmarried adults 00:26:59.31\00:27:04.72 according to the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Organization." 00:27:04.75\00:27:09.92 So I put that down maybe, ladies and gentlemen, 00:27:09.95\00:27:12.36 the report of Seventh-day Adventist student seeking 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.72 treatment at a local Sexually Transmitted Diseases clinic 00:27:14.75\00:27:19.90 is not so far fetched after all. 00:27:19.93\00:27:22.62 After all the scarlet letter 00:27:25.72\00:27:30.23 is a one sized fits all 'A.' 00:27:30.26\00:27:34.36 Verse 10 again "When Jesus had raised Himself up 00:27:37.67\00:27:42.31 and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, 'Woman, 00:27:42.34\00:27:46.02 where are those accusers of yours? 00:27:46.05\00:27:48.42 Has no one condemned you?' 00:27:48.45\00:27:50.05 She said" verse 11 "'No one, Lord.' 00:27:50.08\00:27:52.86 And Jesus said to her, 00:27:52.89\00:27:54.66 'Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.'" 00:27:54.69\00:28:01.01 Now, ladies and gentlemen, would you please note 00:28:01.04\00:28:02.42 that there are two parts to Jesus response. 00:28:02.45\00:28:06.39 You and I are so excited about the first part 00:28:06.42\00:28:08.92 that we tend to forget there is a part two. 00:28:08.95\00:28:12.12 And so today we're going to begin with part two 00:28:12.15\00:28:14.63 and end with part one. 00:28:14.66\00:28:16.31 All right? Let's go to part two. 00:28:16.34\00:28:20.13 Let's read it again "Jesus said to her, 00:28:20.16\00:28:22.25 'Neither do I condemn you.'" 00:28:22.28\00:28:23.57 That would be part one. 00:28:23.60\00:28:24.64 Now here comes part two, "Go and sin in no more." 00:28:24.67\00:28:29.56 Yo, what's up with this go and sin no more admonition? 00:28:29.59\00:28:34.88 Turns out, the John is using the identical Greek phrase 00:28:34.91\00:28:38.71 he did for Jesus when Jesus spoke to the man healed 00:28:38.74\00:28:41.70 beside the Pool of Bethesda a few Sabbaths ago. 00:28:41.73\00:28:43.54 You remember that the man healed by the Pool of Bethesda? 00:28:43.57\00:28:45.40 Identical word, two words in the Greek. 00:28:45.43\00:28:48.33 Just turn back three pages to John 5 00:28:48.36\00:28:50.61 and you'll read it there for yourself. 00:28:50.64\00:28:52.11 John 5:14. 00:28:52.14\00:28:54.93 This is that Sabbath healing by the side at pool 00:28:58.01\00:29:00.55 "Afterward that Sabbath." 00:29:00.58\00:29:01.78 Verse 14 "Jesus found Him," 00:29:01.81\00:29:04.67 the healed man "in the temple." 00:29:04.70\00:29:06.39 He meets the man in the temple. 00:29:06.42\00:29:08.39 The woman meets Jesus in the temple. 00:29:08.42\00:29:10.25 They're at the same spot 00:29:10.28\00:29:11.83 and Jesus speaks this identical command. 00:29:11.86\00:29:14.45 "He meets a man in the temple, 00:29:14.48\00:29:15.66 and He said to him, 'See, you have been made well. 00:29:15.69\00:29:19.31 Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.'" 00:29:19.34\00:29:24.69 Jesus language to the healed man indicates 00:29:24.72\00:29:27.26 that his disease had been result of his personal sinning. 00:29:27.29\00:29:30.98 We don't know what that personal sin was, 00:29:31.01\00:29:33.07 but it isn't very hard to conclude 00:29:33.10\00:29:35.16 that perhaps he suffered 00:29:35.19\00:29:37.17 from some sort of sexually transmitted disease quit doing 00:29:37.20\00:29:42.87 what you did or something worse will come on you. 00:29:42.90\00:29:49.78 Two words in the Greek, 00:29:49.81\00:29:51.57 three words in the English, sin no more. 00:29:51.60\00:29:57.32 Identical command. 00:29:57.35\00:29:58.71 Why, because sexual sin not only kills the heart 00:29:58.74\00:30:03.38 it can also kill the body. 00:30:03.41\00:30:07.18 Into now the second email and I told you about 00:30:07.21\00:30:11.47 from a worshipper here way out of town, a few weeks ago. 00:30:11.50\00:30:17.51 "Hello, Pastor Nelson, thanks for listening to me 00:30:22.12\00:30:23.95 and praying with me for a few minutes yesterday." 00:30:23.98\00:30:27.17 The websites, because after I visit I said, 00:30:27.20\00:30:29.40 please send me this in an email. 00:30:29.43\00:30:31.65 "The websites below will give you more than 00:30:31.68\00:30:34.40 you want to know about HPV." 00:30:34.43\00:30:38.30 Do you know what HPV is?
