The last thing I need 00:09:54.41\00:09:59.20 Is to be heard 00:09:59.23\00:10:03.51 But to hear 00:10:03.54\00:10:07.26 What You would say 00:10:07.29\00:10:10.24 Word of God, speak 00:12:11.40\00:12:15.11 Please let me stay and rest 00:12:15.14\00:12:19.34 In Your holiness 00:12:19.37\00:12:25.57 I'm finding myself 00:12:27.06\00:12:31.87 At a loss for words 00:12:31.90\00:12:36.64 So word of God, speak 00:12:36.67\00:12:43.21 Holy Father, what Michaela 00:12:55.46\00:12:56.69 has just sung that is our prayer, 00:12:56.72\00:12:59.10 may the Word of God, Speak. 00:12:59.13\00:13:02.46 Give us ears to hear... 00:13:02.49\00:13:06.55 And a heart and a mind to heed 00:13:06.58\00:13:09.00 for the glory of Christ Jesus, we pray in his name, amen. 00:13:09.03\00:13:14.20 What does it mean to live biblically? 00:13:14.23\00:13:18.23 That very question perplexed 00:13:18.26\00:13:21.05 the agonistic editor-at-large of Esquire Magazine, 00:13:21.08\00:13:25.05 and so he decided he would set out 00:13:25.08\00:13:26.39 for 12 months and live biblically. 00:13:26.42\00:13:28.63 I'm gonna follow every rule in the Old Testament. 00:13:28.66\00:13:31.51 I went to his website, 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.88 out of the 12 months journey he's written a book, 00:13:34.91\00:13:37.31 Simon and Schuster is just releasing the book 00:13:37.34\00:13:40.13 and there on the screen 00:13:40.16\00:13:41.20 you'll see the title of the book, 00:13:41.23\00:13:42.34 "The Year of Living Biblically." 00:13:42.37\00:13:44.66 So I'm at his website 00:13:44.69\00:13:45.78 and he's describing this project. 00:13:45.81\00:13:47.43 Let me read it to you. 00:13:47.46\00:13:48.64 "'The Year of Living Biblically' is about my quest 00:13:48.67\00:13:51.14 to live the ultimate biblical life, 00:13:51.17\00:13:53.51 to follow every single rule in the Bible 00:13:53.54\00:13:55.47 as literally as possible. 00:13:55.50\00:13:57.55 I obey the famous ones The Ten Commandments, 00:13:57.58\00:13:59.34 'Love thy neighbor; 00:13:59.37\00:14:00.40 Be fruitful and multiply.' 00:14:00.43\00:14:02.00 But also the... 00:14:02.03\00:14:04.02 But also the hundreds of oft-ignored ones, 00:14:04.05\00:14:08.42 do not wear clothes of mixed fibers, 00:14:08.45\00:14:10.52 do not shave your beard, stone adulterers, why? 00:14:10.55\00:14:14.15 Well, I grew up in a very secular home. 00:14:14.18\00:14:16.07 I'm officially Jewish, but I'm Jewish 00:14:16.10\00:14:18.25 in the same way the Olive Garden 00:14:18.28\00:14:19.85 is an Italian Restaurant." 00:14:19.88\00:14:22.63 I thought that was pretty good. 00:14:22.66\00:14:25.03 Actually not too bad, huh. 00:14:25.06\00:14:28.43 A. J. Jacobs is his name. 00:14:28.46\00:14:31.12 "I'd always assume religion would just wither away 00:14:31.15\00:14:33.03 and we live in a neo-enlightenment world. 00:14:33.06\00:14:35.07 I was of course spectacularly wrong. 00:14:35.10\00:14:37.61 So was I missing something essential 00:14:37.64\00:14:39.21 to being a human or was half the world deluded? 00:14:39.24\00:14:41.28 I decided to dive in head first" 00:14:41.31\00:14:43.13 and he does and the book is the result. 00:14:43.16\00:14:46.49 "The Year of Living Biblically." 00:14:46.52\00:14:50.64 How to live biblically of course 00:14:50.67\00:14:51.96 is a great premise for this series 00:14:51.99\00:14:53.58 that you and I are in the thick off right now. 00:14:53.61\00:14:56.78 The series called "The Chosen." 00:14:56.81\00:14:59.49 And we come in to this kind of the gut of this series 00:14:59.52\00:15:04.34 with four controversial questions 00:15:04.37\00:15:06.85 that we're examining together. 00:15:06.88\00:15:08.57 You raised the questions, 00:15:08.60\00:15:09.90 in our spring pulpit series I went over that this summer, 00:15:09.93\00:15:12.51 I saw those and I said, 00:15:12.54\00:15:13.72 we're gonna have to address them. 00:15:13.75\00:15:15.93 Questions about the prophet of the chosen, done it. 00:15:15.96\00:15:20.05 Questions about the diet or alcohol of the chosen. 00:15:20.08\00:15:22.57 Done it. 00:15:22.60\00:15:23.63 Questions about the dress of the chosen, 00:15:23.66\00:15:25.65 gonna do it today. 00:15:25.68\00:15:27.10 And questions finally about the sexuality of the chosen, 00:15:27.13\00:15:30.53 that will be next Sabbath. 00:15:30.56\00:15:31.74 And only in second service, 00:15:31.77\00:15:34.53 are we ending these four 00:15:34.56\00:15:36.83 presentations with live Q and A. 00:15:36.86\00:15:38.71 So you will have an opportunity in a just a moment. 00:15:38.74\00:15:40.25 I was surprised how many stepped 00:15:40.28\00:15:41.32 to the mic last week. 00:15:41.35\00:15:42.40 No planted questions, which is, we ride into it if you wish. 00:15:42.43\00:15:49.27 So how do we live biblically, 00:15:49.30\00:15:50.93 especially in the context of this story 00:15:50.96\00:15:52.37 we're about to share. 00:15:52.40\00:15:53.50 Once upon a time there was a chosen people 00:15:53.53\00:15:55.82 called the children who went through 00:15:55.85\00:15:57.47 a moral meltdown and through it found out, 00:15:57.50\00:16:01.98 how much of naked is acceptable. 00:16:02.01\00:16:04.48 Open your Bible with me please 00:16:04.51\00:16:05.55 to the second book of the Bible, 00:16:05.58\00:16:06.71 that would be the Book of Exodus. 00:16:06.74\00:16:08.60 If you didn't bring your Bible, 00:16:08.63\00:16:10.17 you've got to grab that pew Bible 00:16:10.20\00:16:11.54 right in front of you, pull it out. 00:16:11.57\00:16:13.05 Exodus 32. 00:16:13.08\00:16:15.20 If you're using the pew Bible, 00:16:15.23\00:16:16.39 that would be page 61 in the pew Bible. 00:16:16.42\00:16:19.56 It's the same translation of as-- 00:16:19.59\00:16:22.20 When I'm reading out of here, 00:16:22.23\00:16:23.50 which will be the New King James Version. 00:16:23.53\00:16:25.63 Once you read the story you will never forget it. 00:16:25.66\00:16:27.72 All right, Exodus 32: 1. 00:16:27.75\00:16:30.82 Right at the top of Exodus 32:1. 00:16:30.85\00:16:33.48 "Now when the people saw that 00:16:33.51\00:16:34.82 Moses delayed coming down from the mountain" 00:16:34.85\00:16:38.00 Oh, I love to just shoot, 00:16:38.03\00:16:39.12 chase a little rabbit right there 00:16:39.15\00:16:40.92 because it's, whenever we think there's a delay going on, 00:16:40.95\00:16:43.66 that we get in trouble. 00:16:43.69\00:16:44.76 We change our behavior, we adapt our lifestyle 00:16:44.79\00:16:47.98 because there's a delay. 00:16:48.01\00:16:49.37 They think there's a delay, right? 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.15 But we'll leave that one alone. 00:16:51.18\00:16:52.22 "Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down 00:16:52.25\00:16:54.75 from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron", 00:16:54.78\00:16:57.24 that would be second-in-command. 00:16:57.27\00:16:59.34 Kid brother Moses is at the top of the mountain, 00:16:59.37\00:17:01.84 Aaron, older brother, they come to him 00:17:01.87\00:17:04.35 and they say to him, 00:17:04.38\00:17:05.48 "Come, make us gods that shall go before us, 00:17:05.51\00:17:08.77 as for this Moses, 00:17:08.80\00:17:10.17 the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, 00:17:10.20\00:17:12.30 we do not know what has become of him." 00:17:12.33\00:17:14.70 Give me a break, guys. 00:17:14.73\00:17:15.97 You know exactly what's become of him. 00:17:16.00\00:17:18.26 Don't you give me this because you think about it. 00:17:18.29\00:17:21.64 The very last people story, 00:17:21.67\00:17:25.56 people story in Exodus is right after the Ten Commandments. 00:17:25.59\00:17:29.44 Watch this, keep your finger right here 00:17:29.47\00:17:30.51 'cause we're gonna come back. 00:17:30.54\00:17:31.58 But just turn back to Exodus 20. 00:17:31.61\00:17:33.58 Everybody knows the Ten Commandments chapter, 00:17:33.61\00:17:35.34 Exodus 20. 00:17:35.37\00:17:38.33 Don't you tell me you don't know 00:17:38.36\00:17:39.48 what happened to him. 00:17:39.51\00:17:40.54 You watch this. "Then they said to Moses, 00:17:58.92\00:18:00.81 'You speak with us, and we will hear, 00:18:00.84\00:18:03.08 but let not God speak with us, lest we die.' 00:18:03.11\00:18:06.08 And Moses said to the people, 00:18:06.11\00:18:07.55 'Do not fear, for God has come to test you, 00:18:07.58\00:18:10.44 and that His fear may be before you, 00:18:10.47\00:18:12.20 so that you may not sin.'" 00:18:12.23\00:18:13.43 So verse 21, "The people stood afar off, 00:18:13.46\00:18:15.51 but Moses drew 00:18:15.54\00:18:16.77 near the thick darkness where God was." 00:18:16.80\00:18:18.62 They saw Moses climb that mountain. 00:18:18.65\00:18:21.23 Don't you tell me you don't know 00:18:21.26\00:18:22.49 where he is, he's on top with God, 00:18:22.52\00:18:24.56 you know that, you know that. 00:18:24.59\00:18:28.52 Okay. 00:18:28.55\00:18:29.75 Go back to your finger there at Exodus 32, 00:18:29.78\00:18:31.68 we'll pick it up in verse 2. 00:18:31.71\00:18:33.33 So the people come to Aaron and Aaron, verse 2. 00:18:33.36\00:18:35.44 "Aaron said to them, 'Break off the golden earrings 00:18:35.47\00:18:39.18 which are in the ears of your wives, 00:18:39.21\00:18:42.10 your sons, and your daughters, 00:18:42.13\00:18:43.99 and bring them to me.'" 00:18:44.02\00:18:45.05 So verse 3, "All the people broke off 00:18:45.08\00:18:47.50 the golden earrings which were in their ears, 00:18:47.53\00:18:50.18 and brought them to Aaron." 00:18:50.21\00:18:52.57 Where did they get the earrings? 00:18:52.60\00:18:54.55 Last night, when they are fleeing Egypt, 00:18:54.58\00:18:57.05 those neighbors in Egypt are so fed up. 00:18:57.08\00:19:00.04 They are so worried that 00:19:00.07\00:19:01.30 the entire nation is gonna be destroyed, 00:19:01.33\00:19:02.68 that they heap them, 00:19:02.71\00:19:03.78 the Egyptian neighbors heap their gold, 00:19:03.81\00:19:05.94 their jewels and their jewelry 00:19:05.97\00:19:07.66 on top of the children of Israel 00:19:07.69\00:19:09.04 and said just get out of here before we're all dead. 00:19:09.07\00:19:11.55 God intended that. He said I'm gonna use that. 00:19:11.58\00:19:14.34 We'll melted down 00:19:14.37\00:19:15.65 and I'll built a sanctuary out of it. 00:19:15.68\00:19:17.67 Okay? So that's what they got. 00:19:17.70\00:19:20.80 And now notice verse 4. 00:19:20.83\00:19:22.18 "And he, Aaron, received the gold from their hand, 00:19:22.21\00:19:25.46 and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, 00:19:25.49\00:19:27.43 and made a molded calf. 00:19:27.46\00:19:29.77 Then they said, 'This is your god, 00:19:29.80\00:19:31.62 O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!' 00:19:31.65\00:19:33.92 So when Aaron saw he built an alter before it 00:19:33.95\00:19:36.17 and Aaron made a proclamation 00:19:36.20\00:19:38.28 and said, tomorrow is the feast of the Lord.'" 00:19:38.31\00:19:41.64 Poor Aaron, second-in-command. 00:19:41.67\00:19:45.97 If only this leader had held the line. 00:19:46.00\00:19:51.57 If only this leader had stood up for principle, 00:19:51.60\00:19:54.53 if only he had refused to compromise, 00:19:54.56\00:19:57.57 the story would have been vastly different. 00:19:57.60\00:20:02.47 And how easy it is for those of us 00:20:02.50\00:20:04.20 who lead, to give the children 00:20:04.23\00:20:06.67 what they want 00:20:06.70\00:20:08.98 and not what they need. 00:20:09.01\00:20:14.92 Early the next morning, verse 6. 00:20:14.95\00:20:16.98 I mean these guys can not wait, 00:20:17.01\00:20:18.65 they can not wait and so verse 6. 00:20:18.68\00:20:21.52 "They rose early on the next day, 00:20:21.55\00:20:24.22 they offered burnt offerings, 00:20:24.25\00:20:25.37 and they brought peace offerings, 00:20:25.40\00:20:26.61 and the people sat down to eat and drink, 00:20:26.64\00:20:28.17 and rose up to play." 00:20:28.20\00:20:30.18 It is party time, dude. 00:20:30.21\00:20:32.78 And they did. 00:20:32.81\00:20:34.20 The Hebrew word for party right here, 00:20:34.23\00:20:36.20 is not party, actually the Hebrew word 00:20:36.23\00:20:37.59 for rose up is-- 00:20:37.62\00:20:43.25 It's the same word Mrs. Potiphar uses 00:20:43.28\00:20:45.83 when she's pressing sexual 00:20:45.86\00:20:47.59 advancement charges against Joseph. 00:20:47.62\00:20:49.51 This boy came in here to -- me. 00:20:49.54\00:20:51.77 It's the same word in Genesis that 00:20:51.80\00:20:53.92 describes the Lord of the Philistines 00:20:53.95\00:20:56.84 looking out of his window 00:20:56.87\00:20:57.91 and seeing Isaac and Rebecca caressing. 00:20:57.94\00:21:00.46 The King James says, they were-- 00:21:00.49\00:21:03.34 and he say, wait a minute. 00:21:03.37\00:21:04.44 He told me that was his sister. 00:21:04.47\00:21:06.24 You never do that to a sister. 00:21:06.27\00:21:09.27 Same word, point being, ladies and gentlemen, 00:21:09.30\00:21:12.91 this is no church social 00:21:12.94\00:21:14.51 they're having early in the morning. 00:21:14.54\00:21:17.12 This is sexual play. 00:21:17.15\00:21:19.92 Where do they get it from, huh. 00:21:19.95\00:21:21.28 What do you think they got it from? 00:21:21.31\00:21:22.34 They got it from Egypt. 00:21:22.37\00:21:24.73 You probably already figured this out, haven't you? 00:21:24.76\00:21:26.78 The chosen have always been tempted 00:21:26.81\00:21:29.90 to make the fallen culture around them, 00:21:29.93\00:21:32.87 their default position in practice. 00:21:32.90\00:21:35.48 And so the record reads, "And they rose up to play." 00:21:35.51\00:21:42.39 Meanwhile, back on the top of the mountain, 00:21:42.42\00:21:46.11 there is a heart broken God 00:21:46.14\00:21:49.21 and a devastated crestfallen leader, our Moses. 00:21:49.24\00:21:55.01 A voice speaks 00:21:55.04\00:21:56.07 out of the shadowy glory Moses, Moses. 00:21:56.10\00:21:59.41 I can't believe it. I just counted them. 00:21:59.44\00:22:01.52 They have broken all ten of my Ten Commandments. 00:22:01.55\00:22:07.83 It's over Moses, I'm telling you, it's over. 00:22:07.86\00:22:10.54 So what I invite you to do is just stand back 00:22:10.57\00:22:13.22 because I'm gonna nuke them right now. 00:22:13.25\00:22:16.56 And then boy, it will be you and me. 00:22:16.59\00:22:18.97 I'll make a great nation out of the two of us, 00:22:19.00\00:22:21.09 what do you say? 00:22:21.12\00:22:25.47 It's one of those heart stopping scenes 00:22:25.50\00:22:29.29 in all the scripture and sacred history, 00:22:29.32\00:22:32.45 when in response Moses falls to his face 00:22:32.48\00:22:36.93 and begins to intercede, 00:22:36.96\00:22:38.21 begins to pour his heart out pleading 00:22:38.24\00:22:41.66 for the forgiveness of this people 00:22:41.69\00:22:43.28 who just days earlier, by the way, chapter 17, 00:22:43.31\00:22:45.72 they are threatening to stone their leader to death, 00:22:45.75\00:22:48.24 he is begging God, you can't kill him, 00:22:48.27\00:22:50.07 you just can't destroy them, please, I beg you. 00:22:50.10\00:22:54.66 It's the most profound illustration 00:22:54.69\00:22:56.34 in human experience, in all literature, 00:22:56.37\00:22:58.61 this is the most profound reflection 00:22:58.64\00:23:03.83 of the intercessory ministry of Christ in human form. 00:23:03.86\00:23:08.90 Now Jesus there on that center cross, 00:23:08.93\00:23:14.31 prays to the Father. 00:23:14.34\00:23:15.45 Father forgive them, 00:23:15.48\00:23:18.08 they don't know what they are doing. 00:23:18.11\00:23:20.48 Moses is Christ in this scene 00:23:20.51\00:23:22.94 and then there's another scene as you turn the page, 00:23:22.97\00:23:24.76 near the end of the chapter. 00:23:24.79\00:23:27.42 And the heart of God as Moses sobs 00:23:27.45\00:23:29.23 and pleads for Israel. 00:23:29.26\00:23:30.42 The heart of God is strangely moved 00:23:30.45\00:23:32.58 and he'd had a suspicion that divine love 00:23:32.61\00:23:35.44 was going to be reflected through this human instrument. 00:23:35.47\00:23:40.43 And so verse 14 reads, 00:23:40.46\00:23:41.89 "And the Lord relented from the harm 00:23:41.92\00:23:44.58 which He said He would do to His people." 00:23:44.61\00:23:46.16 He changed His mind. He talk me out of it, Moses. 00:23:46.19\00:23:49.92 Now Moses turns around. Oh, boy, trouble coming. 00:23:49.95\00:23:52.59 In verse 15, "And Moses turned 00:23:52.62\00:23:53.76 and went down from the mountain, 00:23:53.79\00:23:54.86 and they were two tablets of the Testimony" 00:23:54.89\00:23:56.35 This is verse 15 "In his hand, 00:23:56.38\00:23:57.91 the tablets were written on both sides, 00:23:57.94\00:23:59.06 on the one side 00:23:59.09\00:24:00.14 and on the other they were written." 00:24:00.17\00:24:01.20 Verse 16, " Now the tablets were the work of God, 00:24:01.23\00:24:03.87 and the writing was the writing of God" 00:24:03.90\00:24:05.70 The handwriting of God engraved 00:24:05.73\00:24:07.18 on those two stoned tablets. 00:24:07.21\00:24:09.31 And as their making 00:24:09.34\00:24:10.41 their way down that shaky slope, 00:24:10.44\00:24:12.28 they can't see the valley yet, 00:24:12.31\00:24:13.60 but Joshua now hears the sound, 00:24:13.63\00:24:16.60 the sounds coming from the base of Mount Sinai. 00:24:16.63\00:24:21.73 And because he can't see, in alarm, he exclaims to Moses. 00:24:21.76\00:24:24.43 He says, My Lord 00:24:24.46\00:24:25.87 there is war going on in that camp. 00:24:25.90\00:24:28.13 And Moses said, no, no, no, no, no. 00:24:28.16\00:24:31.56 This is verse 18, 00:24:31.59\00:24:32.63 "It is not the noise of the shout of victory, 00:24:32.66\00:24:35.11 nor the noise of the cry of defeat, 00:24:35.14\00:24:36.82 But I hear the sound of singing." 00:24:36.85\00:24:42.43 They're having worship at the foot of the mountain 00:24:42.46\00:24:47.72 and they are singing at the top of their lungs. 00:24:47.75\00:24:51.40 Anything wrong with singing at the top of your lungs, 00:24:51.43\00:24:53.35 of course not, we do it here, but watch. 00:24:53.38\00:24:57.84 And so it was, verse 19, 00:24:57.87\00:24:59.07 that "As soon as he came near the camp, 00:24:59.10\00:25:00.68 that he saw the calf and the dancing." 00:25:00.71\00:25:03.54 They're not just singing, they are dancing in the aisles, 00:25:03.57\00:25:08.09 and it is a ruckus, cacophony. 00:25:08.12\00:25:12.40 "And so Moses' anger became hot, 00:25:12.43\00:25:13.87 and he cast the tablets out of his hands 00:25:13.90\00:25:15.21 and broke them at the foot of the mountain." 00:25:15.24\00:25:16.33 And then the next verse he comes up 00:25:16.36\00:25:17.44 to that golden calf 00:25:17.47\00:25:18.53 and obviously verse 20 takes hours 00:25:18.56\00:25:21.32 because he has to knock the calf down, 00:25:21.35\00:25:23.49 he has to melt the calf and then grind up the dust. 00:25:23.52\00:25:27.12 He pours it into the stream that 00:25:27.15\00:25:28.49 flows from Mount Sinai through the dessert floor 00:25:28.52\00:25:31.22 and then he commands the people, 00:25:31.25\00:25:32.43 now you drink this water because I want to make a point. 00:25:32.46\00:25:35.01 You are now drinking your God. 00:25:35.04\00:25:36.34 You God is gold flakes inside of you, 00:25:36.37\00:25:38.31 so you worship that. 00:25:38.34\00:25:41.16 And once they have drunk that polluted water, 00:25:41.19\00:25:45.49 and here's a leadership moment, 00:25:45.52\00:25:46.64 if they are any leaders here, this is it. 00:25:46.67\00:25:50.10 Moses comes to Aaron verse 21. 00:25:50.13\00:25:51.95 "And Moses said to Aaron, 00:25:51.98\00:25:53.22 'What did this people do to you that 00:25:53.25\00:25:56.42 you have brought so great a sin upon them?'" 00:25:56.45\00:26:00.04 They influenced you and you have made them sin. 00:26:00.07\00:26:03.05 What's up? 00:26:03.08\00:26:04.15 And now watch this, the very next verse. 00:26:04.18\00:26:05.47 A dramatic leadership contrasts 00:26:05.50\00:26:08.05 because just moments ago, a top the mountain, 00:26:08.08\00:26:11.05 Moses is begging for his people, 00:26:11.08\00:26:15.76 but now Aaron, in a moment of leadership cave-in, 00:26:15.79\00:26:20.53 he doesn't beg for the people, 00:26:20.56\00:26:21.66 he blames the people instead. 00:26:21.69\00:26:24.68 Can you believe it? 00:26:24.71\00:26:26.03 You're a leader and it was their fault, 00:26:26.06\00:26:28.17 it is their, it was their idea. 00:26:28.20\00:26:33.07 Oh, my Lord, Aaron says to his younger brother. 00:26:33.10\00:26:36.44 "Do not let the anger of my Lord become hot." 00:26:36.47\00:26:38.33 I mean, you know the people. 00:26:38.36\00:26:39.40 They're set on evil. 00:26:39.43\00:26:40.74 What I did was, I threw this gold into the fire 00:26:40.77\00:26:42.51 and you see at the end of 24, and this calf came out, 00:26:42.54\00:26:44.64 I don't know how it happened, 00:26:44.67\00:26:45.73 but it just, this calf came out. 00:26:45.76\00:26:47.24 Please, Moses, don't be mad at me. 00:26:47.27\00:26:50.16 Moses tell us in Deuteronomy Chapter 9, 00:26:50.19\00:26:52.28 our theme book for this series. 00:26:52.31\00:26:53.86 Deuteronomy 9:20, 00:26:53.89\00:26:55.35 that God would have destroyed Aaron 00:26:55.38\00:26:59.10 if Moses hadn't interceded for him. 00:26:59.13\00:27:02.20 He begged for Aaron's life, God says, okay. 00:27:02.23\00:27:05.38 You can have your brother. 00:27:05.41\00:27:09.85 And then Moses, what is this? 00:27:09.88\00:27:10.91 Verse 26, no, no, verse 25 00:27:10.94\00:27:12.41 "Now when Moses saw that the people were unrestrained 00:27:12.44\00:27:15.07 for Aaron had not restrained them, 00:27:15.10\00:27:16.58 to their shame among their enemies." 00:27:16.61\00:27:18.14 By the way the Hebrew for unrestrained here Parah. 00:27:18.17\00:27:21.76 It can be translated unclosed or uncontrolled. 00:27:21.79\00:27:25.51 They were half naked. 00:27:25.54\00:27:27.27 They've gone into this wild orgy 00:27:27.30\00:27:29.47 to the shame of the enemies that surround them. 00:27:29.50\00:27:33.66 Moses cried out in verse 26. 00:27:33.69\00:27:35.58 "He stood in the entrance of the camp, 00:27:35.61\00:27:37.13 and he said, 'Whoever is on the Lord's side come to me!'" 00:27:37.16\00:27:44.36 Because in this battle between good and evil, 00:27:44.39\00:27:46.31 there is not third side, there is no middle ground. 00:27:46.34\00:27:48.70 How long will you limp between two opinions 00:27:48.73\00:27:50.60 if God is God you worship God 00:27:50.63\00:27:51.86 and Satan is Satan, 00:27:51.89\00:27:52.92 if Satan is God you worship him, 00:27:52.95\00:27:54.39 you can't limp back and forth. 00:27:54.42\00:27:56.70 You got to take a stand at some point. 00:27:56.73\00:27:59.72 You have to and they do. 00:27:59.75\00:28:02.51 Early the next morning, heartbroken, 00:28:02.54\00:28:06.04 Moses climbs back up that shaley slope 00:28:06.07\00:28:10.95 to the smokey summit where God is awaiting. 00:28:10.98\00:28:12.75 This is verse 31. 00:28:12.78\00:28:15.06 Then Moses returned to the Lord and he said, 00:28:15.09\00:28:18.06 "Oh, these people have committed a great sin," 00:28:18.09\00:28:21.13 You were right. 00:28:21.16\00:28:22.26 They have made for themselves a god of gold! 00:28:22.29\00:28:24.95 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin, 00:28:24.98\00:28:29.68 and until we get to eternity and we personally ask Moses, 00:28:29.71\00:28:33.10 how were you going to finish that sentence? 00:28:33.13\00:28:35.24 We do not know how that sentence ends 00:28:35.27\00:28:36.76 because the sentence is cut off. 00:28:36.79\00:28:38.64 If you will forgive their sins 00:28:38.67\00:28:39.89 then I will, then they will, then you-- 00:28:39.92\00:28:41.68 He doesn't say, he's just cut off. 00:28:41.71\00:28:44.61 It isn't a stretch of an imagination 00:28:44.64\00:28:48.87 to sense that sob that just chokes 00:28:48.90\00:28:50.90 his sentence, in mid-sentence. 00:28:50.93\00:28:54.48 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin" 00:28:54.51\00:28:56.60 stop, choke, but if not, I pray, 00:28:56.63\00:29:01.73 blot me out of their book which You have written." 00:29:01.76\00:29:07.06 I don't understand leadership like that, do you? 00:29:07.09\00:29:09.53 That you're willing to substitute yourself 00:29:09.56\00:29:12.21 for the sake of your people? 00:29:12.24\00:29:15.23 Come on. 00:29:15.26\00:29:17.52 The author of the Bible Commentary poignantly observes. 00:29:17.55\00:29:21.36 It is not easy to estimate the measure of love 00:29:21.39\00:29:23.51 in such man is Moses and by the way, 00:29:23.54\00:29:25.37 Paul did it in Romans Chapter 9, 00:29:25.40\00:29:26.78 he said, "If only I could be a cursed lost forever, 00:29:26.81\00:29:30.28 so the God could save the Jews." 00:29:30.31\00:29:32.31 Both Moses and Paul. 00:29:32.34\00:29:33.38 It is not easy to estimate the measure of love 00:29:33.41\00:29:34.92 in such men as Moses and Paul, 00:29:34.95\00:29:36.55 for limited powers of reason 00:29:36.58\00:29:38.28 do not comprehended anymore 00:29:38.31\00:29:40.51 than a little child is able to comprehend 00:29:40.54\00:29:42.59 the courage of heroes, 00:29:42.62\00:29:44.13 have no understanding of the courage of heroes. 00:29:44.16\00:29:46.74 I can not comprehend that selfless love. 00:29:46.77\00:29:50.81 It is the profound reflection of Christ the intercessory 00:29:50.84\00:29:56.54 for the human race. 00:29:56.57\00:30:01.00 Blot me out. God we, waves aside. 00:30:01.03\00:30:03.61 Now come on, He said, you know, the only people 00:30:03.64\00:30:05.38 I blot out are the people of the sin, forget that idea. 00:30:05.41\00:30:07.63 He said, in fact, Moses, and I've been thinking about it 00:30:07.66\00:30:08.88 you know what? 00:30:08.91\00:30:09.94 I'm gonna send my angel with you. 00:30:09.97\00:30:11.04 I'm gonna send my angel, 00:30:11.07\00:30:12.19 you will go to the Promise Land, 00:30:12.22\00:30:13.28 but listen to me, 00:30:13.31\00:30:14.36 I am not gonna go with you, do you understand? 00:37:23.81\00:37:26.64 Huh? "We undress-- 00:37:26.67\00:37:30.63 We undress in front of each other, 00:37:30.66\00:37:31.70 we share a dress room, 00:37:31.73\00:37:32.76 we sleep together in our T-shirts 00:37:32.79\00:37:34.56 and we think nothing of sexual stuff 00:37:34.59\00:37:36.14 and so it can seems strange to us 00:37:36.17\00:37:37.27 that guy see a little flesh 00:37:37.30\00:37:38.50 and they go sexual on us, but it's true. 00:37:38.53\00:37:40.37 That's why guys are more likely not to share a bed, 00:37:40.40\00:37:43.87 king size or not with another guy 00:37:43.90\00:37:45.99 when crashing at a friends house 00:37:46.02\00:37:47.21 or on a road trip. 00:37:47.24\00:37:48.29 I will not sleep in that bed. 00:37:48.32\00:37:50.11 I am sleeping on the floor, do you understand? 00:37:50.14\00:37:53.59 I am not going in that bed with you, dude. 00:37:53.62\00:37:58.07 That's just the way we are because it's too suggestive. 00:37:58.10\00:38:03.05 You get her point, don't you? 00:38:03.08\00:38:06.17 That's why it's way too visual for them. 00:38:06.20\00:38:08.04 They aren't casual about our bodies like 00:38:08.07\00:38:10.04 we are any hint of flesh they see 00:38:10.07\00:38:11.77 and it's daydream city for better or for worse. 00:38:11.80\00:38:14.96 So I'm gonna say one word here 00:38:14.99\00:38:16.39 that I would not do among others in first church. 00:38:16.42\00:38:18.92 So if you're showing 00:38:18.95\00:38:20.04 the very tippy-top of your cleavage 00:38:20.07\00:38:21.74 because you think, who cares, 00:38:21.77\00:38:24.97 it's not like they can see the rest of me. 00:38:25.00\00:38:27.62 Funny thing, no they don't actually see, 00:38:27.65\00:38:30.20 she puts the rest of you, 00:38:30.23\00:38:31.54 but they do start to imagining what it looks like. 00:38:31.57\00:38:38.62 I'm glad summer is over 00:38:38.65\00:38:39.68 and we're dealing with this in a chilly fall. 00:38:39.71\00:38:45.27 We were sitting together 00:38:45.30\00:38:46.65 in our last spiritual life committee in the conversation, 00:38:46.68\00:38:49.50 bunch of us turned to MySpace and Facebook 00:38:49.53\00:38:52.37 and somebody made the comment 00:38:52.40\00:38:54.43 and I'm gonna pass it on to you. 00:38:54.46\00:38:55.55 Do you, do you realize 00:38:55.58\00:38:56.96 how much you're exposing yourself 00:38:56.99\00:38:58.42 to the world by the pictures that you post in MySpace? 00:38:58.45\00:39:01.43 Do you understand? The world sees. 00:39:01.46\00:39:04.40 Oh, no, it's just my friends. No, no, the world sees. 00:39:04.43\00:39:09.20 Are you sure you want that pose to all your visitors? 00:39:09.23\00:39:14.02 Bill Shoptaw in charge of our medical students 00:39:14.05\00:39:17.18 who go on to medicine told me after first church. 00:39:17.21\00:39:19.43 He said, Dwight, I want to tell you some. 00:39:19.46\00:39:20.49 I was in meetings this week up at the university Michigan. 00:39:20.52\00:39:24.82 The Director of admissions for a medical school 00:39:24.85\00:39:26.84 in the State of Michigan says, you know what? 00:39:26.87\00:39:28.78 When students apply to our medical school, 00:39:28.81\00:39:31.57 we require that they give us their, 00:39:31.60\00:39:33.26 their MySpace and Facebook addresses. 00:39:33.29\00:39:36.05 If they refuse, we will refuse to consider their application. 00:39:36.08\00:39:40.12 Employers now are searching the web to find out 00:39:40.15\00:39:43.88 what about you is out there 00:39:43.91\00:39:45.53 that the rest of t world knows 00:39:45.56\00:39:46.82 and that you're not telling them. 00:39:46.85\00:39:49.09 You think about it, sis or bro. 00:39:49.12\00:39:53.17 You want that picture of you? 00:39:53.20\00:39:56.02 So what's-- 00:39:56.05\00:39:57.09 Let's put this in spiritual perspective. 00:39:57.12\00:39:58.71 Back to your study guide. 00:39:58.74\00:39:59.77 Jesus said, sermon on the mountain, 00:39:59.80\00:40:02.03 "Whoever looks at a woman to lust 00:40:02.06\00:40:03.66 for her has already committed adultery 00:40:03.69\00:40:06.15 with her in his heart" That's Matthew 5:28. 00:40:06.18\00:40:08.94 Listen lady, "If you're dressing for his eyes, 00:40:08.97\00:40:11.63 you maybe dabbling with his fall." 00:40:11.66\00:40:15.53 Come on. We're just that way. 00:40:15.56\00:40:20.98 So of course modesty 00:40:21.01\00:40:22.04 in how you and I dress is a moral issue. 00:40:22.07\00:40:24.74 It is a moral-- I know, I know, 00:40:24.77\00:40:25.85 guys ought to be stronger, but we are not 00:40:25.88\00:40:28.60 and by the way you're not so strong yourself. 00:40:28.63\00:40:32.70 That's why Paul writes here in, what is this? 00:40:32.73\00:40:34.45 1 Corinthians 8:9, fill it in. 00:40:34.48\00:40:35.95 "Beware lest somehow this liberty of yours 00:40:35.98\00:40:37.88 becomes a stumbling block to those who are weak." 00:40:37.91\00:40:41.25 Trust me men are weak, 00:40:41.28\00:40:42.84 so are women and so Paul says, 00:40:42.87\00:40:44.41 If I have a liberty, 00:40:44.44\00:40:45.75 I'm not gonna font my liberty in front of you. 00:40:45.78\00:40:47.72 It doesn't bother me, 00:40:47.75\00:40:48.81 but I'm not gonna do it in front of you 00:40:48.84\00:40:50.17 because if it leads to you sin I'm responsible. 00:40:50.20\00:40:52.51 I won't do it. 00:40:52.54\00:40:55.15 So how much of naked is acceptable? 00:40:55.18\00:40:58.55 Israel undressed at the foot of Mount Sinai 00:40:58.58\00:41:00.84 and it was all downhill from there 00:41:00.87\00:41:03.38 and it took a meltdown to bring a revival. 00:41:03.41\00:41:06.09 Lesson number one, 00:41:06.12\00:41:07.15 a revival of morality leads a revival of modesty. 00:41:07.18\00:41:09.50 Write it down. 00:41:09.53\00:41:10.56 Lesson number two, final lesson. 00:41:10.59\00:41:12.25 Lesson number two, "A revival of spirituality 00:41:12.28\00:41:15.20 leads to a revival of simplicity." 00:41:15.23\00:41:18.42 Get to those two words, spirituality, 00:41:18.45\00:41:21.07 A revival of spirituality leads to a revival of simplicity." 00:41:21.10\00:41:23.92 Because by the way, what happened 00:41:23.95\00:41:25.85 at the foot of Mount Sinai was not an isolated incident. 00:41:25.88\00:41:29.98 Long before Mount Sinai, Jacob 00:41:30.01\00:41:31.65 who was given the name Israel, 00:41:31.68\00:41:34.24 he called for a spiritual revival in his tribe, 00:41:34.27\00:41:38.66 they went through revival and notice what happened. 00:41:38.69\00:41:41.64 We'll put this on the screen. Genesis 35. 00:41:41.67\00:41:44.52 "Then God said unto Jacob, Arise, 00:41:44.55\00:41:46.15 go up to Bethel, house of God 00:41:46.18\00:41:47.98 where I gave You that dream years ago. 00:41:48.01\00:41:50.22 I want you to go there and dwell. 00:41:50.25\00:41:51.48 Make an altar there to God, who appeared to you 00:41:51.51\00:41:53.51 when you fled from the face of Esau your brother. 00:41:53.54\00:41:55.87 And Jacob then says, 00:41:55.90\00:41:56.93 he turns to his tribe about 70 people to all go with him, 00:41:56.96\00:41:59.85 pulled away the foreign gods that are among you, 00:41:59.88\00:42:01.87 purify yourselves and change your garments. 00:42:01.90\00:42:04.81 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel 00:42:04.84\00:42:07.26 and I will make an altar there to God, 00:42:07.29\00:42:08.93 who answered me in the day of my distress 00:42:08.96\00:42:11.19 and has halleluiah been with me in the way 00:42:11.22\00:42:13.74 which I have gone. 00:42:13.77\00:42:14.84 Now notice, "So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods 00:42:14.87\00:42:18.03 which were in their hands, 00:42:18.06\00:42:19.46 and the earrings which were in their ears, 00:42:19.49\00:42:21.78 and Jacob hid them under the terebinth tree 00:42:21.81\00:42:25.30 which was by Shechem." 00:42:25.33\00:42:28.69 Spiritual revival breaks out 00:42:28.72\00:42:30.20 in the community of the faithful 00:42:30.23\00:42:31.65 and they bury their earrings. 00:42:31.68\00:42:36.79 This is not a female thing. 00:42:36.82\00:42:37.85 This is not a male thing, this is an everybody thing. 00:42:37.88\00:42:40.65 They all buried their ornaments. 00:42:40.68\00:42:43.40 So what's going on? 00:42:43.43\00:42:45.46 Very interestingly, scholars believe that 00:42:45.49\00:42:49.35 the second revival at the foot 00:42:49.38\00:42:50.93 of Mount Sinai resulted in a lasting. 00:42:50.96\00:42:53.64 Listen now, a lasting abandonment 00:42:53.67\00:42:55.73 of ornamental jewelry by the children of Israel. 00:42:55.76\00:43:01.01 Are we still there? Yeah. 00:43:01.04\00:43:02.12 Exodus 33, it's right in front of you. 00:43:02.15\00:43:03.61 So drop down to verse 6. Exodus 33:6. 00:43:03.64\00:43:05.97 "So the children of Israel stripped themselves 00:43:06.00\00:43:08.23 of their ornaments by the mount Horeb." 00:43:08.26\00:43:11.46 Now the preposition by in the English 00:43:11.49\00:43:13.97 is translating the Hebrew preposition mean 00:43:14.00\00:43:16.83 and mean is almost always translated from. 00:43:16.86\00:43:20.98 Leading some scholars 00:43:21.01\00:43:22.14 and the new American standard Bible 00:43:22.17\00:43:23.27 to render this verse, 00:43:23.30\00:43:24.36 jot it down in your study guide. 00:43:24.39\00:43:25.67 So Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments 00:43:25.70\00:43:28.11 from mount Horeb onward." 00:43:28.14\00:43:31.27 That was it, from then on. 00:43:31.30\00:43:34.60 Amazingly, archeological excavations 00:43:34.63\00:43:36.46 in early Israelite sites with rare exceptions, 00:43:36.49\00:43:39.86 uncover very little jewelry 00:43:39.89\00:43:43.22 and only a poor quality at that. 00:43:43.25\00:43:45.13 So you're saying, okay, Dwight. 00:43:45.16\00:43:46.23 Pastor, what does that mean? 00:43:46.26\00:43:47.31 You won't jewelry in the Bible? 00:43:47.34\00:43:48.67 Oh, no, you will find jewelry in the Bible. 00:43:48.70\00:43:51.26 The most comprehensive treatment 00:43:51.29\00:43:52.42 of Jewelry in the Bible has been written 00:43:52.45\00:43:55.07 in my opinion by Angel Rodriguez. 00:43:55.10\00:43:57.91 It's his book, "Jewelry in the Bible." 00:43:57.94\00:43:59.21 In which he makes three observations 00:43:59.24\00:44:01.75 that I am still ruminating on and it's number three. 00:44:01.78\00:44:05.35 But I'll share all three with you. 00:44:05.38\00:44:06.49 Jot them down please in your study guide. 00:44:06.52\00:44:07.66 Number one, Rodriguez. 00:44:07.69\00:44:09.67 The Bible recognizes diverse functions, 00:44:09.70\00:44:13.84 diverse functions for jewelry. 00:44:13.87\00:44:15.68 Yeah, there's jewelry for status, 00:44:15.71\00:44:16.97 that would called a crown, a king wear it. 00:44:17.00\00:44:19.93 Ezekiel 16 by the way. 00:44:19.96\00:44:22.36 It shows, God finding Israel by the side of the road, 00:44:22.39\00:44:24.71 it's just a little waif, a little baby, 00:44:24.74\00:44:27.30 he washes her, wraps her in swaddling clothes, 00:44:27.33\00:44:30.63 she grows up into a, into a lovely young woman 00:44:30.66\00:44:33.81 and then he says, I'm gonna marry. 00:44:33.84\00:44:35.00 I'm the king of the universe, you will become my bride, 00:44:35.03\00:44:37.38 Queen Israel and he decks 00:44:37.41\00:44:40.03 in glorious clothing and jewelry. 00:44:40.06\00:44:42.30 The jewelry that he decks with, 00:44:42.33\00:44:44.31 bedecks her with is status jewelry. 00:44:44.34\00:44:49.40 I'm queen. So there different functions. 00:44:49.43\00:44:51.20 Number one, status number two, there's authority, 00:44:51.23\00:44:54.63 that's a royal or family signet ring, 00:44:54.66\00:44:56.16 you know, derives, Daniel in the lions den, 00:44:56.19\00:44:57.98 he puts his ring down, seals that lions den. 00:44:58.01\00:44:59.76 Jesus in the parable of prodigal son, 00:44:59.79\00:45:01.41 the boy comes and they are so excited, 00:45:01.44\00:45:03.08 they put the ring back on the boy, 00:45:03.11\00:45:04.17 that's a family, that's a simple of authority. 00:45:04.20\00:45:07.80 Number three, for spiritual leadership. 00:45:07.83\00:45:10.93 You want to talk about the high priest of Israel? 00:45:10.96\00:45:12.79 He had this massive, 00:45:12.82\00:45:14.43 this 12 semi-precious stones arranged on his chest, 00:45:14.46\00:45:18.70 and what's called ifad, the only person 00:45:18.73\00:45:20.97 in the entire community that could wear that, 00:45:21.00\00:45:22.73 glorious gems 00:45:22.76\00:45:25.79 and finally the Bible does recognize that 00:45:25.82\00:45:27.24 some wear jewelry for ornamentation. 00:45:27.27\00:45:30.07 Can you see the references there? 00:45:30.10\00:45:32.78 So the three observations. I'm ruminating on this. 00:45:32.81\00:45:34.73 Here's observation number two from Rodriguez. 00:45:34.76\00:45:36.58 Number two, "The Bible recognizes that 00:45:36.61\00:45:38.09 jewelry is not intrinsically evil." 00:45:38.12\00:45:41.11 Come on, the New Jerusalem, 00:45:41.14\00:45:42.17 the streets are gonna be pad in gold 00:45:42.20\00:45:44.18 and the 12 foundations 00:45:44.21\00:45:45.90 to the walls are 12 semi-precious stones. 00:45:45.93\00:45:48.09 God created every gem on earth. 00:45:48.12\00:45:50.95 He has a right to those gems. 00:45:50.98\00:45:53.48 The point is, minerals are not moral agents. 00:45:53.51\00:45:57.21 The danger of jewelry is located 00:45:57.24\00:45:58.83 in the heart of the wearer, 00:45:58.86\00:46:00.45 not simply in the object itself, 00:46:00.48\00:46:02.57 which leaves to number three. 00:46:02.60\00:46:03.92 Finally number three. 00:46:03.95\00:46:05.00 The Bible portrays ornamental jewelry 00:46:05.03\00:46:08.35 as incompatible with the personal adornment 00:46:08.38\00:46:11.57 of the people of God. 00:46:11.60\00:46:12.67 In Rodriguez's words, 00:46:12.70\00:46:14.11 the Bible regards jewelry with a quote, 00:46:14.14\00:46:16.18 "General pejorative attitude." 00:46:16.21\00:46:20.02 For that reason, when spiritual revival 00:46:20.05\00:46:21.96 breaks out in the tribe of Jacob, 00:46:21.99\00:46:23.31 the ornaments come off. 00:46:23.34\00:46:24.39 It is a moral issue. 00:46:24.42\00:46:25.70 For that reason, when spiritual revival 00:46:25.73\00:46:27.21 again breaks out with the children of Israel 00:46:27.24\00:46:29.04 at the foot of Mount Sinai the ornaments 00:46:29.07\00:46:30.70 come off at God's commands, it is a moral issue. 00:46:30.73\00:46:36.78 And by the way, from that point on, 00:46:36.81\00:46:38.62 no more ornamental jewelry, 00:46:38.65\00:46:40.32 until centuries later they apostatize watch this. 00:46:40.35\00:46:43.90 And has to Isaiah. 00:46:43.93\00:46:45.00 Isaiah 3, "God's calling for a revival. 00:46:45.03\00:46:47.38 Isaiah 3:18, "In that day the Lord 00:46:47.41\00:46:49.35 will take away the finery, 00:46:49.38\00:46:50.46 the jingling anklets, the scarves 00:46:50.49\00:46:52.45 and the crescents and the pendants, 00:46:52.48\00:46:54.19 and the bracelets and the veils. 00:46:54.22\00:46:56.18 The headdresses, the leg ornaments, 00:46:56.21\00:46:57.59 and the headbands. 00:46:57.62\00:46:58.65 The perfume boxes, the charms, 00:46:58.68\00:47:00.50 and the rings, the nose jewels, 00:47:00.53\00:47:02.33 the festal apparel and the mantles, 00:47:02.36\00:47:04.45 the outer garments, the purses, and the mirrors. 00:47:04.48\00:47:06.91 The fine linen, the turbans and the robes." 00:47:06.94\00:47:09.05 Revival time again for the chosen. 00:47:09.08\00:47:14.13 And then along come Jesus. 00:47:14.16\00:47:17.56 The incarnate God of the univers 00:47:17.59\00:47:19.64 who could have worn rightfully worn every gem in the universe 00:47:19.67\00:47:22.74 and every crown pilled on top of His head. 00:47:22.77\00:47:25.10 And how does Jesus come? 00:47:25.13\00:47:26.24 He comes to show us the divine value of simplicity. 00:47:26.27\00:47:30.19 He has one robe to his life and they will gamble for it, 00:47:30.22\00:47:35.23 at the foot of His cross. 00:47:35.26\00:47:36.69 No coins, no jewels, 00:47:36.72\00:47:40.13 no house, nothing. 00:47:40.16\00:47:45.46 But the divine principle of modest simplicity. 00:47:45.49\00:47:49.79 And then he has the gall to look at you and me 00:47:49.82\00:47:52.79 and say, hey, guys, follow me. 00:47:52.82\00:47:56.36 The New Testament church did 00:47:56.39\00:47:57.42 which is why they embrace that 00:47:57.45\00:47:58.77 same principle of modest simplicity. 00:47:58.80\00:48:02.30 The same principle of Jesus 00:48:02.33\00:48:03.62 and so you will read this New Testament. 00:48:03.65\00:48:05.09 This is 1 Peter 3:3. 00:48:05.12\00:48:07.05 "Do not let your adornment be merely outward, 00:48:07.08\00:48:10.03 arranging the hair, wearing gold 00:48:10.06\00:48:11.57 or putting on fine apparel, 00:48:11.60\00:48:13.38 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, 00:48:13.41\00:48:15.41 with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, 00:48:15.44\00:48:18.43 which is very precious in the sight of God." 00:48:18.46\00:48:22.85 Write it down. 00:48:22.88\00:48:23.91 You see, in both the Old and New Testaments guys, 00:48:23.94\00:48:26.84 the principle is the same. 00:48:26.87\00:48:28.35 Human value the outward appearance, 00:48:28.38\00:48:30.98 but God values the heart. 00:48:31.01\00:48:35.10 That's what counts. 00:48:35.13\00:48:37.30 Rodriguez goes on to point that, 00:48:37.33\00:48:38.84 in fact, the final, the final appearance 00:48:38.87\00:48:44.02 of women in the Bible is in the Book of Revelation. 00:48:44.05\00:48:46.20 Two women, one woman representing 00:48:46.23\00:48:49.51 the people of God, 00:48:49.54\00:48:50.57 not a single piece of jewelry upon her body, 00:48:50.60\00:48:53.05 the other woman representing 00:48:53.08\00:48:54.12 the antagonist to the people of God 00:48:54.15\00:48:55.92 and her body is covered with gold and germs and pearls. 00:48:55.95\00:48:58.83 God is making a point, it is a moral issue. 00:48:58.86\00:49:01.86 It is a moral issue. 00:49:01.89\00:49:04.26 So what's the point? Write it down. 00:49:04.29\00:49:06.28 God calls the chosen to a life of modest simplicity. 00:49:06.31\00:49:10.15 That's the point. 00:49:10.18\00:49:11.70 I understand very well that it is a countercultural life 00:49:11.73\00:49:14.25 to which he's calling all of us, 00:49:14.28\00:49:15.56 but to follow Jesus has always been 00:49:15.59\00:49:17.32 countercultural, has it not? 00:49:17.35\00:49:18.38 Come on. 00:49:18.41\00:49:19.44 The Mennonite author Donald Kraybill, 00:49:19.47\00:49:20.97 in describing Christ kingdom calls 00:49:21.00\00:49:23.16 it an upside down kingdom. 00:49:23.19\00:49:24.84 It's the exact opposite of the world. 00:49:24.87\00:49:27.32 And that's why 1 John 2:15, 00:49:27.35\00:49:29.92 "Love not the world, neither the things 00:49:29.95\00:49:31.65 that are in the world" is God's plea. 00:49:31.68\00:49:33.18 Guys, it's not like it is, 00:49:33.21\00:49:34.85 it's not like it is here, not in my kingdom. 00:49:34.88\00:49:37.85 So here's my question for you. 00:49:37.88\00:49:39.11 Answer this for me please. 00:49:39.14\00:49:40.62 Why should we allow the executives 00:49:40.65\00:49:42.98 and designers of the fashion industry 00:49:43.01\00:49:44.83 to set the parameters 00:49:44.86\00:49:46.01 for our own walk with God, huh? 00:49:46.04\00:49:49.27 Why should Britney Spears? 00:49:49.30\00:49:52.22 By the way, just yesterday, 00:49:52.25\00:49:53.32 they released Britney Spears monthly expenditures $49,000 00:49:53.35\00:49:57.62 on a mortgage every month. 00:49:57.65\00:49:59.67 And get this, I heard this and I scribbled it down. 00:49:59.70\00:50:01.53 $15,000 a month on clothes 00:50:01.56\00:50:04.79 and accessories, 15,000 a month. 00:50:04.82\00:50:08.79 And she's the goddess of a whole lot of girls, 00:50:08.82\00:50:13.19 a little bit younger than you. 00:50:13.22\00:50:15.69 So why should Britney Spears and Paris Hilton 00:50:15.72\00:50:17.79 and Soulja Boy dictate how we dress? 00:50:17.82\00:50:25.60 Who says we have to wear that to look good, huh? 00:50:25.63\00:50:28.45 Who says we have to put that on to look dressed up? 00:50:28.48\00:50:30.96 Who says we have to spend that much money 00:50:30.99\00:50:32.98 on clothing and accessories? 00:50:33.01\00:50:34.42 I am not talking about 00:50:34.45\00:50:35.80 the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:50:35.83\00:50:36.86 I'm not talking about Christianity, period. 00:50:36.89\00:50:40.78 If you push this back on to me 00:50:40.81\00:50:46.02 because and would you write this down, 00:50:46.05\00:50:47.67 modest simplicity is both a moral value 00:50:47.70\00:50:50.86 and a moral issue. 00:50:50.89\00:50:53.49 Now come on pastor. 00:50:53.52\00:50:55.08 Come on, Dwight, are you suggesting 00:50:55.11\00:50:56.14 that this is a matter of personal salvation, 00:50:56.17\00:50:57.77 that I won't get, that I won't get saved 00:50:57.80\00:50:59.72 unless I embrace modest simplicity? 00:50:59.75\00:51:02.07 No, I am not. 00:51:02.10\00:51:03.41 You won't get saved unless you embrace Jesus, 00:51:03.44\00:51:05.77 that's the gospel. 00:51:05.80\00:51:07.65 You embrace Jesus, you'll just fine, thank you. 00:51:07.68\00:51:10.61 However, when you embrace Jesus as Savior, 00:51:10.64\00:51:13.94 you must also embrace Him as Lord 00:51:13.97\00:51:16.39 and when He says, hey, boy, hey girl, 00:51:16.42\00:51:18.27 come, follow Me, that includes 00:51:18.30\00:51:21.37 his moral value of modest simplicity, 00:51:21.40\00:51:24.88 which, by the way, equal time now. 00:51:24.91\00:51:27.95 Which, by the way, means that the principle 00:51:27.98\00:51:32.19 of modest simplicity addresses both those $20 studs 00:51:32.22\00:51:36.59 in the young adults ears as well as the $40,000 car 00:51:36.62\00:51:41.34 or the $80,000 motor home in your driveway. 00:51:41.37\00:51:45.12 Modest simplicity cuts both ways. 00:51:45.15\00:51:49.12 Won't you give me this? 00:51:49.15\00:51:50.19 We have too many legalist adults 00:51:50.22\00:51:52.43 walking around complaining about the $5 stud in the ear, 00:51:52.46\00:51:55.32 when they got a $50,000 car in their driveway. 00:51:55.35\00:51:59.38 Won't you talk to these kids about 00:51:59.41\00:52:01.59 modes simplicity living like that? 00:52:01.62\00:52:06.18 Modest simplicity cuts both ways. 00:52:06.21\00:52:09.95 And so you don't want the diamond up here? 00:52:09.98\00:52:12.78 You don't want the diamond up here? 00:52:12.81\00:52:14.14 Trust me, dropping it six inches 00:52:14.17\00:52:16.35 does not baptize it. 00:52:16.38\00:52:23.29 If you don't want the diamond up here, 00:52:23.32\00:52:25.53 you better not wear the diamond here. 00:52:25.56\00:52:28.17 Huh. 00:52:28.20\00:52:31.56 And while we're at it, it is incongruous. 00:52:31.59\00:52:35.72 I can not image a God in this universe 00:52:35.75\00:52:38.14 who would consistently call us 00:52:38.17\00:52:39.35 to abandoned external ornamentation 00:52:39.38\00:52:41.65 and not have a word to say about houses 00:52:41.68\00:52:45.44 that are vastly above our economic stationed 00:52:45.47\00:52:47.73 or are vastly above our personal need, 00:52:47.76\00:52:50.89 modest simplicity cuts both ways. 00:52:50.92\00:52:57.13 Which is why nobody can judge nobody. 00:52:57.16\00:53:00.51 Oh, great, oh, then that means 00:53:00.54\00:53:02.28 the university has no right 00:53:02.31\00:53:03.70 to print in its student hand book 00:53:03.73\00:53:04.97 these words and I'll quote. 00:53:05.00\00:53:06.37 "Ornamental rings and bracelets, 00:53:06.40\00:53:08.01 necklace, necklaces and chains, ear, tongue, nose 00:53:08.04\00:53:10.70 and eyebrow rings are not appropriate 00:53:10.73\00:53:12.56 at Andrews University." 00:53:12.59\00:53:14.62 After all, Dwight, you just said nobody can judge. 00:53:14.65\00:53:17.86 Oh, my friend you're absolutely right. 00:53:17.89\00:53:19.67 But a community of faith can chose. 00:53:19.70\00:53:24.45 And the Seventh-day Adventist Church has chosen, 00:53:24.48\00:53:25.94 that is a simple of our embrace 00:53:25.97\00:53:27.45 of Jesus standard of modest simplicity. 00:53:27.48\00:53:29.73 We chose like Israel of old, not to wear ornamental jewelry. 00:53:29.76\00:53:36.40 Why? 00:53:36.43\00:53:37.87 Because the chosen have always been 00:53:37.90\00:53:41.16 a counter cultural movement, that's why. 00:53:41.19\00:53:46.86 Jesus' life of modest simplicity is our example. 00:53:46.89\00:53:49.42 He says, come, follow me. 00:53:49.45\00:53:50.96 By the way, so is His death. 00:53:50.99\00:53:54.27 You do know how Jesus died, don't you? 00:53:54.30\00:53:56.47 You know how he did. He died naked. 00:53:56.50\00:53:59.35 There isn't any artist in the world 00:53:59.38\00:54:00.41 that would realistically portray the crucifixion. 00:54:00.44\00:54:02.99 Christ with no clothes on. 00:54:03.02\00:54:05.41 He died naked to redeem us from our own moral nakedness. 00:54:05.44\00:54:10.51 So the question, how much of naked is acceptable? 00:54:10.54\00:54:14.76 Why don't you ask hat of the God 00:54:14.79\00:54:16.23 who became naked? 00:54:16.26\00:54:21.47 So that He might cover our nakedness 00:54:21.50\00:54:24.68 with the spotless robe 00:54:24.71\00:54:26.15 of his perfect modest simplicity. 00:54:26.18\00:54:33.04 Let's pray. 00:54:33.07\00:54:35.04 Oh, God, we see Jesus 00:54:35.07\00:54:40.24 hanging naked on Calvary. 00:54:40.27\00:54:46.41 And all we can say is thank you 00:54:46.44\00:54:50.58 from the depths of our hearts. 00:54:50.61\00:54:54.99 Our God came and for us, He died. 00:54:55.02\00:55:02.45 Holy Father, grant to us as a community of faith, 00:55:02.48\00:55:07.19 the courage now 00:55:07.22\00:55:11.21 to follow after Jesus. 00:55:11.24\00:55:16.78 We pray in his name, amen. 00:55:16.81\00:55:23.28 Before you go, I wanted to take one more moment 00:55:23.31\00:55:25.73 and let you know how glad 00:55:25.76\00:55:26.80 I am to share this hour of worship 00:55:26.83\00:55:28.76 and Bible teaching with us. 00:55:28.79\00:55:30.35 This is the Pioneer Memorial Church 00:55:30.38\00:55:32.01 and we're on the campus of Andrews University 00:55:32.04\00:55:33.82 and the series is "The Chosen." 00:55:33.85\00:55:36.27 This is the series that has been growing 00:55:36.30\00:55:38.80 and it's burned on my heart and over the last few weeks, 00:55:38.83\00:55:42.65 before this new season began 00:55:42.68\00:55:44.58 and some, some concentrated prayer time, 00:55:44.61\00:55:46.67 I believe the spirit of God led me to the series 00:55:46.70\00:55:49.14 out of the Book of Deuteronomy 00:55:49.17\00:55:50.81 for this generation, within our community of faith 00:55:50.84\00:55:53.39 and outside this community of faith. 00:55:53.42\00:55:55.55 I believe both, both communities 00:55:55.58\00:55:58.67 need to hear the compelling Bible truth 00:55:58.70\00:56:03.13 captured in the series called "The Chosen." 00:56:03.16\00:56:04.70 So thank you for joining me and all of us 00:56:04.73\00:56:07.40 as we continue our journey deeper 00:56:07.43\00:56:09.17 and deeper into the heart of this theme. 00:56:09.20\00:56:11.65 Living as you and I do 00:56:11.68\00:56:13.44 and I'm, I know I'm preaching to the choir now.
