From the campus of Andrews University 00:00:06.08\00:00:08.82 this is New Perception with Dr. Dwight K. Nelson. 00:00:08.85\00:00:13.58 Oh, God's children, we're all children. 00:00:19.89\00:00:21.80 Where you're children there, we are earth's children, 00:00:21.83\00:00:24.40 could it be we are starving to death? 00:00:24.43\00:00:29.69 We look well fed-- our tummies are full 00:00:29.72\00:00:33.18 but are we starving, are we on the point of death? 00:00:33.21\00:00:38.96 Its morning and Holy Scripture teaches, 00:00:38.99\00:00:40.60 let the teaching be clear 00:00:40.63\00:00:41.99 let us know how You would have us respond 00:00:42.02\00:00:44.16 we pray in Jesus name. 00:00:44.19\00:00:46.34 Amen. 00:00:46.37\00:00:48.26 You can't talk about starving without thinking famine, 00:00:48.29\00:00:50.69 you can't think about famine 00:00:50.72\00:00:51.80 without thinking of the Horn of East Africa. 00:00:51.83\00:00:53.50 Let me put a map of the Horn of East Africa up here. 00:00:53.53\00:00:55.77 Take a look at this. 00:00:55.80\00:00:57.45 The darker the color the more extreme the suffering, 00:00:57.48\00:01:01.79 that dark section in the middle. 00:01:01.82\00:01:03.90 These are the countries by the way of Somalia, 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.65 Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti. 00:01:05.68\00:01:08.84 You're getting into Somalia there that's catastrophic famine 00:01:08.87\00:01:11.99 according to the key that's catastrophic famine. 00:01:12.02\00:01:14.73 United Nations now estimates that more than 13 million people 00:01:14.76\00:01:19.54 on that map are suffering, are starving to death. 00:01:19.57\00:01:24.39 Sixty years they've gone without water, 00:01:24.42\00:01:25.95 60 years in the Horn of Africa. 00:01:25.98\00:01:27.40 And Somalia alone down where that's dark 00:01:27.43\00:01:30.16 four million are starving, 00:01:30.19\00:01:32.38 three million of whom 00:01:32.41\00:01:33.78 live in the southern portion of Somalia 00:01:33.81\00:01:35.82 so it just gets worse and worse as you move down. 00:01:35.85\00:01:38.34 They're estimating now that 750,000 people 00:01:38.37\00:01:43.88 face the risk of death in the next four months, 00:01:43.91\00:01:46.63 the UN says if help does not come. 00:01:46.66\00:01:49.96 Maybe you're gonna be there help they need, 00:01:49.99\00:01:52.14 I don't know. 00:01:52.17\00:01:54.13 But let me talk about the children. 00:01:54.16\00:01:56.57 The death rate now under five 00:01:56.60\00:02:00.01 15.43 deaths per 10,000 individuals daily, daily. 00:02:00.04\00:02:06.92 Thirty thousand children have died 00:02:06.95\00:02:08.41 to 2 per 10,000 is the threshold of famine, its 15.43. 00:02:08.44\00:02:13.66 But running numbers by it doesn't move you at all, 00:02:13.69\00:02:15.99 so let me put some faces by 00:02:16.02\00:02:17.26 and take a look at these suffering. 00:02:17.29\00:02:19.27 Look at that sitting in a little plastic bathtub, 00:02:22.37\00:02:26.72 starving to death. 00:02:26.75\00:02:27.78 Take a look at another face, family looking on 00:02:27.81\00:02:33.38 victims of starvation, look at them. 00:02:33.41\00:02:34.95 Look at one more. 00:02:34.98\00:02:38.10 That little baby looks like he's 80-years of age, 00:02:38.13\00:02:40.53 does he not? 00:02:40.56\00:02:41.96 He is starving to death. 00:02:41.99\00:02:44.61 Could it be that if you're putting 00:02:44.64\00:02:47.06 the faces of the starving our faces go up? 00:02:47.09\00:02:50.14 Yeah, right like we just prayed our tummies are full 00:02:50.17\00:02:53.12 but are we on the edge of spiritual starvation. 00:02:53.15\00:02:58.97 Fourth gospel confronts us with that question-- 00:02:59.00\00:03:03.30 familiar beloved narrative and then 00:03:03.33\00:03:05.66 a metaphor that many find disgusting. 00:03:05.69\00:03:08.42 We're getting to the metaphor but first the familiar narrative 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.70 that teaching today is entitled 00:03:11.73\00:03:15.39 "Starving to Death When the Pantry is Full." 00:03:15.42\00:03:19.69 Let us pray. 00:03:19.72\00:03:20.96 O God, amazing grace, 00:03:20.99\00:03:24.42 that You come to us full tummies. 00:03:24.45\00:03:31.04 But in this narrative 00:03:31.07\00:03:35.56 Holy Spirit confront us with our desperate need. 00:03:35.59\00:03:40.19 We pray in Jesus name, amen. 00:03:40.22\00:03:43.70 Open your Bible please to the fourth gospel, 00:03:43.73\00:03:46.76 the fourth gospel, the Gospel of John. 00:03:46.79\00:03:51.27 Beloved narrative-- do you know what, 00:03:51.30\00:03:52.78 this is the only miracle that all four gospels record. 00:03:52.81\00:03:56.90 That's how popular this miracle as you know 00:03:56.93\00:04:00.64 the miracle you grew up with it as a kid. 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.77 You know John Chapter 6, 00:04:02.80\00:04:05.13 but we return to this beloved narrative, 00:04:05.16\00:04:07.16 because a narrative sets us up 00:04:07.19\00:04:09.23 for this revolting metaphor 00:04:09.26\00:04:11.85 that it is impaired if we wrestle with 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.87 as we continue our journey through the last word. 00:04:13.90\00:04:16.33 That's the fourth gospel the Gospel of John 00:04:16.36\00:04:19.75 for the final generation. 00:04:19.78\00:04:21.45 Let's go to John Chapter 6. 00:04:21.48\00:04:22.94 I'm in the New King James Version 00:04:22.97\00:04:24.62 if you didn't bring a Bible 00:04:24.65\00:04:25.80 grab the pew Bible in front of you, 00:04:25.83\00:04:27.08 it will also be the New King James Version. 00:04:27.11\00:04:29.05 Let's get into the teaching together. 00:04:29.08\00:04:31.84 John Chapter 6, pick it up in verse 1. 00:04:31.87\00:04:35.12 Let's go 00:04:35.15\00:04:36.18 "After these things 00:04:36.21\00:04:37.24 Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, 00:04:37.27\00:04:38.90 which is a Sea of Tiberias." 00:04:38.93\00:04:40.30 John is the only one who refers to it by its Roman name, 00:04:40.33\00:04:42.97 because John has Gentile readers in mind. 00:04:43.00\00:04:45.22 It's written specifically for them. 00:04:45.25\00:04:47.20 So Jesus went over to the Sea of Tiberias. 00:04:47.23\00:04:49.52 Verse 2 "Then a great multitude followed Him, 00:04:49.55\00:04:52.84 because they saw His signs 00:04:52.87\00:04:54.12 which He performed on those who were diseased." 00:04:54.15\00:04:57.88 Jesus is at His heyday right now. 00:04:57.91\00:05:01.59 He has the popularity of a rock star 00:05:01.62\00:05:03.76 by the thousands people are flocking to Him. 00:05:03.79\00:05:06.84 I saw a news clip this last week of President Obama. 00:05:06.87\00:05:10.37 He's on the Denver Campus of the University of Colorado 00:05:10.40\00:05:12.94 and the place is just jammed and there's the camera panned 00:05:12.97\00:05:16.81 these young university students. 00:05:16.84\00:05:18.80 I mean, it's just a look of wow. 00:05:18.83\00:05:22.03 Jesus is in that same status. 00:05:22.06\00:05:23.78 The people at the edge the crowd 00:05:23.81\00:05:25.24 are holding up their iPhones and they're taking pictures 00:05:25.27\00:05:27.61 to email to their friends. 00:05:27.64\00:05:29.13 I'm near, I'm near the star himself. 00:05:29.16\00:05:33.37 But in a few short verses everything collapses. 00:05:33.40\00:05:36.00 "So they followed Him, because they've seen the signs 00:05:36.03\00:05:38.06 which He performed on those who were diseased." 00:05:38.09\00:05:39.53 Verse 3 "Jesus went up on the mountain, 00:05:39.56\00:05:41.41 and there He sat with His disciples. 00:05:41.44\00:05:42.84 Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near." 00:05:42.87\00:05:47.41 Four times John will talk about the Passover, 00:05:47.44\00:05:49.70 four times he wants us to recall the images 00:05:49.73\00:05:51.66 not only in the ancient exodus, 00:05:51.69\00:05:53.26 he wants to read us 00:05:53.29\00:05:54.32 post Calvary to recall the images of the cross 00:05:54.35\00:05:57.65 and so he intentionally uses the word Passover. 00:05:57.68\00:06:00.01 And by the way this is his last Passover. 00:06:00.04\00:06:02.82 The next Passover it'scurtains, he dies. 00:06:02.85\00:06:06.16 He will be the Passover lamb. 00:06:06.19\00:06:09.05 John skips two-and-half years of Jesus ministry. 00:06:09.08\00:06:11.35 Boom, gone, and he plunges in to the crisis 00:06:11.38\00:06:14.79 and the crisis it's a picture right here. 00:06:14.82\00:06:18.70 "Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near." 00:06:18.73\00:06:20.62 Verse 5 "Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, 00:06:20.65\00:06:23.39 and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, 00:06:23.42\00:06:25.47 He said to Philip," 00:06:25.50\00:06:26.53 who have into grow up in Bethesda 00:06:26.56\00:06:28.51 a village near this mountain 00:06:28.54\00:06:29.84 where Jesus is going to perform this miracle. 00:06:29.87\00:06:32.64 "He happens to say to Philip, 00:06:32.67\00:06:33.97 'Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?' " 00:06:34.00\00:06:36.09 You know, Philip, you grow up in this town, 00:06:36.12\00:06:37.90 any supermarkets that can cover this crowd. 00:06:37.93\00:06:40.94 Now we're gonna find out there're 5,000 men-- 00:06:40.97\00:06:43.76 the only list of men. 00:06:43.79\00:06:45.06 Who senses back there that's the-- 00:06:45.09\00:06:47.51 those of the heads they count. 00:06:47.54\00:06:49.04 But if the men are married you're gonna throw in-- 00:06:49.07\00:06:51.10 probably you are gonna throw in what, 00:06:51.13\00:06:52.62 now they're 3,500 for. 00:06:52.65\00:06:54.77 Yeah, 3,500 then you're gonna throw in children. 00:06:54.80\00:06:57.70 We could be looking at a small baseball stadium AAA, 00:06:57.73\00:07:01.43 not World Series, 00:07:01.46\00:07:02.49 but AAA baseball stadium with 15, 000 people. 00:07:02.52\00:07:06.47 So "Philip 'where we're going to get bread?' 00:07:06.50\00:07:08.17 " But He said this Jesus did, verse 6 00:07:08.20\00:07:10.36 "He said this to test Philip for him, 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.13 He Himself knew what He would do, 00:07:12.16\00:07:13.96 " He wants to set this up so that 00:07:13.99\00:07:15.22 when Philip experiences this miracle 00:07:15.25\00:07:18.18 he will never forget it as long as he lives. 00:07:18.21\00:07:21.75 So "Philip answers Him" verse 7 I thought about it, 00:07:21.78\00:07:23.67 you know what, Lord, 00:07:23.70\00:07:24.73 "Two hundred denarii worth of bread 00:07:24.76\00:07:26.50 is not sufficient for them, 00:07:26.53\00:07:27.72 that every one of them may have a little." 00:07:27.75\00:07:29.58 Now Philip has grabbed a big number. 00:07:29.61\00:07:31.54 This is 200 days of a common labor, 00:07:31.57\00:07:33.94 its $8 an hour minimum wage. 00:07:33.97\00:07:35.40 So that's eight hours a day 00:07:35.43\00:07:37.11 so that be 64 times 200, $12,800 00:07:37.14\00:07:40.91 even if we could $12,800 drawn from our ATM machines 00:07:40.94\00:07:44.26 all of us at the same time using our debit cards 00:07:44.29\00:07:46.13 it wouldn't be enough to pay for food for these. 00:07:46.16\00:07:48.16 Ah, that's a point. 00:07:48.19\00:07:49.51 Jesus wants Philips to get. 00:07:49.54\00:07:50.95 Now Philip and Andrew are buddies 00:07:50.98\00:07:52.54 they appear in chapter 1 together, 00:07:52.57\00:07:53.87 they appear here together, 00:07:53.90\00:07:54.93 they will appear in chapter 12 together, 00:07:54.96\00:07:56.30 they both grew up in the same town. 00:07:56.33\00:07:57.67 So where Phillip is you'll find Andrew. 00:07:57.70\00:07:59.84 And Andrew either is overhearing 00:07:59.87\00:08:02.94 or he is standing beside Philip. 00:08:02.97\00:08:04.46 And Andrew pipes up. 00:08:04.49\00:08:06.28 Verse 8 "One of His disciples, 00:08:06.31\00:08:07.73 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him," 00:08:07.76\00:08:10.76 hey wait a minute, "there is a lad here 00:08:10.79\00:08:12.69 who has five barley loaves and two small fish, 00:08:12.72\00:08:15.92 but what are they among so many?" 00:08:15.95\00:08:18.34 Jesus says to the two men. 00:08:22.32\00:08:26.49 Make the people sit down. 00:08:26.52\00:08:27.93 This is verse 10 "'Make the people sit down.' 00:08:27.96\00:08:29.80 Now there was much grass in the place." 00:08:29.83\00:08:31.50 that's John the eyewitness 00:08:31.53\00:08:32.56 because it's springtime Passover here so this mountain, 00:08:32.59\00:08:35.39 it's not a mountain, say hillside. 00:08:35.42\00:08:36.51 We call it hill today. 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.76 But this mountain is just as verdant green carpet 00:08:37.79\00:08:40.78 that goes all the way up to the top. 00:08:40.81\00:08:42.96 Nice soft carpet, Jesus says "'Make everybody sit down.' 00:08:42.99\00:08:45.78 Now there was much grass in the place. 00:08:45.81\00:08:47.68 So the men sat down, in number about five thousand." 00:08:47.71\00:08:50.64 Plus the women, plus the children-- 00:08:50.67\00:08:52.41 we're looking at 15,000 perhaps. 00:08:52.44\00:08:54.19 Verse 11 "And Jesus took the loaves, 00:08:54.22\00:08:57.42 and when He had given thanks" 00:08:57.45\00:09:00.29 His characteristic behavior at the beginning of a meal 00:09:00.32\00:09:04.35 He takes a loaves, "and when He had given thanks 00:09:04.38\00:09:07.80 He distributed them to the disciples, 00:09:07.83\00:09:10.07 and the disciples to those sitting down, 00:09:10.10\00:09:11.58 and likewise of the fish." 00:09:11.61\00:09:13.53 The fish was used as a relish. 00:09:13.56\00:09:15.09 Those were actually sandwiches that little boy brought. 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.26 A barley sandwiches. 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.53 Now barley is not your-- 00:09:20.56\00:09:22.33 is not the top of the menu request. 00:09:22.36\00:09:25.76 In fact Philo 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.31 the Jewish philosopher described barley 00:09:27.34\00:09:29.65 which is a cheaper substitute for wheat. 00:09:29.68\00:09:31.67 Barley he described it as fit for irrational animals 00:09:31.70\00:09:34.80 and men in unhappy circumstances. 00:09:34.83\00:09:37.81 It's awful food. 00:09:37.84\00:09:39.06 Only the poor, the poor eat barley. 00:09:39.09\00:09:41.39 So Andrew finds this poor kid. 00:09:41.42\00:09:44.41 He said, hey, boy let me just, 00:09:44.44\00:09:46.34 let me just have your lunch, five barley loaves. 00:09:46.37\00:09:49.68 The fish, little sardine or whatever that's just relish. 00:09:49.71\00:09:52.42 He just-- mother sent them slices 00:09:52.45\00:09:54.09 and he has to put it on. 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.23 So he gives the relish and the five loaves. 00:09:55.26\00:10:01.29 "Jesus breaks it, gives it to the disciples, 00:10:01.32\00:10:03.83 the disciples then given to those sitting down." 00:10:03.86\00:10:05.82 This is the end of verse 11. 00:10:05.85\00:10:06.93 "And likewise at the fish, as much as they wanted." 00:10:06.96\00:10:09.07 So verse 12 "When they were filled, 00:10:09.10\00:10:11.22 Jesus said to His disciples 00:10:11.25\00:10:12.82 'Gather up the fragments of remain, 00:10:12.85\00:10:14.28 so that nothing is lost.' 00:10:14.31\00:10:15.60 " We waste nothing in my kingdom. 00:10:15.63\00:10:18.51 I know a commentator named Robert Smith 00:10:18.54\00:10:20.84 delightful commentary on the fourth gospel 00:10:20.87\00:10:22.83 and he makes the point. 00:10:22.86\00:10:23.98 He says you know what, Jesus isn't so concerned 00:10:24.01\00:10:25.65 about the fragments. 00:10:25.68\00:10:26.71 Yes He is, but He is making a point about humanity. 00:10:26.74\00:10:29.03 I don't want any fragments of humanity lost. 00:10:29.06\00:10:32.74 I want every men, women, and child 00:10:32.77\00:10:34.71 picked up for the kingdom. 00:10:34.74\00:10:35.82 Do you understand? Nobody get's left behind. 00:10:35.85\00:10:38.36 That be a good-- that be a good slogan, wouldn't it? 00:10:38.39\00:10:40.61 No child left behind everyone comes. 00:10:40.64\00:10:45.40 You get them all, you hear me? 00:10:45.43\00:10:47.18 Get them all. 00:10:47.21\00:10:48.47 And they go out and they gather up the fragment. 00:10:48.50\00:10:51.19 This is verse 13 00:10:51.22\00:10:52.25 "Therefore they gathered them up, 00:10:52.28\00:10:53.53 they filled twelve baskets 00:10:53.56\00:10:55.30 with the fragments of the five barley loaves 00:10:55.33\00:10:57.31 which were left over by those who had eaten. 00:10:57.34\00:10:58.95 And then those men, when" 00:10:58.98\00:11:00.87 these are the men sitting underground. 00:11:00.90\00:11:02.13 "When they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said," truly, 00:11:02.16\00:11:05.84 "'This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.' 00:11:05.87\00:11:10.26 " And by the way this is capital "P" Prophet, 00:11:10.29\00:11:12.70 because they are thinking of Moses in Deuteronomy 18 00:11:12.73\00:11:14.80 it says "One day God is gonna send a prophet 00:11:14.83\00:11:17.46 just like me and he will leads you." 00:11:17.49\00:11:20.27 This is the capital "P" Prophet. 00:11:20.30\00:11:21.83 Hey, wait a minute guys, come here, come here. 00:11:21.86\00:11:23.87 Think about this, we would if when we go into battle 00:11:23.90\00:11:26.71 we would never be hungry, 00:11:26.74\00:11:28.12 we could be fed night and day 00:11:28.15\00:11:29.88 and guess what if any of us got hit 00:11:29.91\00:11:32.29 He will heal us on the spot. 00:11:32.32\00:11:34.88 We need this guy to become king. 00:11:34.91\00:11:39.55 Exactly what's happening here. 00:11:39.58\00:11:41.57 Look at that verse 15 "Therefore when Jesus perceived 00:11:41.60\00:11:45.88 that they were about to come 00:11:45.91\00:11:47.75 and take Him by force and make Him king, 00:11:47.78\00:11:53.03 He departed again to the mountain 00:11:53.06\00:11:54.40 by Himself alone." 00:11:54.43\00:11:55.65 Now the deal is John cuts out two key points 00:11:55.68\00:11:59.54 that the synoptics insert right here. 00:11:59.57\00:12:01.68 Number one, 00:12:01.71\00:12:03.70 knowing the intentions of the crowd. 00:12:03.73\00:12:05.93 The synoptics tell us Jesus turned to the disciples and 00:12:05.96\00:12:08.24 He says get in that boat, 00:12:08.27\00:12:09.77 get in that boat push off the shore now. 00:12:09.80\00:12:13.04 And Desire of Ages describes this way. 00:12:13.07\00:12:15.06 The disciples protested 00:12:15.09\00:12:16.34 but Jesus now spoke with an authority 00:12:16.37\00:12:18.54 He had never before assume toward them 00:12:18.57\00:12:21.55 and in silence, steaming, 00:12:21.58\00:12:27.55 but in silence they turn toward the sea. 00:12:27.58\00:12:30.97 Now, go and then He turns, He turns to the crowd. 00:12:31.00\00:12:35.67 And going to the synoptics He dismisses the crowd 00:12:35.70\00:12:38.09 with the air of an authority. 00:12:38.12\00:12:39.47 There were strong men in the crowd. 00:12:39.50\00:12:40.83 Desire of Ages says strong men 00:12:40.86\00:12:42.20 who were ready to force their will to be done. 00:12:42.23\00:12:44.58 Jesus speaks to them with a divinity 00:12:44.61\00:12:48.48 that dispels the crowd. 00:12:48.51\00:12:50.36 And then heartbroken, you know, His heart has broken, 00:12:50.39\00:12:53.55 because now the big plunge He knows what lies ahead. 00:12:53.58\00:12:58.14 Heart broken He climbs that mountain, 00:12:58.17\00:12:59.74 that tall hill to be alone with His Father. 00:12:59.77\00:13:06.11 And the disciples-- look at this verse 16. 00:13:06.14\00:13:12.00 "Now when evening came, 00:13:12.03\00:13:13.06 His disciples went down to the sea." 00:13:13.09\00:13:14.46 So they obey Jesus that far they go down to the sea. 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.80 "Got into the boat, 00:13:16.83\00:13:18.10 and went over the sea toward Capernaum. 00:13:18.13\00:13:20.00 And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them." 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.48 In other words, they actually waited. 00:13:22.51\00:13:23.88 They didn't push off, they waited. 00:13:23.91\00:13:26.71 Desire of Ages fills us in on the psyche of these disciples 00:13:26.74\00:13:30.32 at this moment of terrible disappointment. 00:13:30.35\00:13:33.12 I want to read this to you. I'll put it on the screen. 00:13:33.15\00:13:35.16 I want to read this to you, because I find it very familiar 00:13:35.19\00:13:38.79 as to what happens in my own spiritual journey. 00:13:38.82\00:13:41.79 Watch this, maybe it happens to you too. 00:13:41.82\00:13:43.33 Words on the screen. 00:13:43.36\00:13:44.39 "They the disciples had left Jesus with dissatisfied hearts, 00:13:44.42\00:13:47.76 more impatient with Him than ever before 00:13:47.79\00:13:50.00 since acknowledging Him as their Lord. 00:13:50.03\00:13:52.08 They murmured because they had not been 00:13:52.11\00:13:53.75 permitted to proclaim Him king. 00:13:53.78\00:13:55.35 They blamed themselves for yielding 00:13:55.38\00:13:57.28 so readily to His command." 00:13:57.31\00:13:58.69 I told you why don't you stand up, 00:13:58.72\00:14:00.23 what a whip? Yes He did. 00:35:53.34\00:35:54.71 Then Jesus says all right, I want this metaphor 00:35:54.74\00:35:57.42 to be crystal clear and four times in a row now, 00:35:57.45\00:35:59.96 four times in case we missed at the first and the second, 00:35:59.99\00:36:02.75 four times He will state the metaphor. 00:36:02.78\00:36:04.68 Here we go, verse 53. 00:36:04.71\00:36:06.10 "Jesus said to them, 'Most assuredly, 00:36:06.13\00:36:07.86 here it comes, amen, amen. 00:36:07.89\00:36:10.81 "I say to you." 00:36:10.84\00:36:11.87 This is huge now, red flag. 00:36:11.90\00:36:13.90 Listen reader. 00:36:13.93\00:36:14.96 "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of God 00:36:14.99\00:36:17.82 and drink His blood, you have no life in you." 00:36:17.85\00:36:22.02 That's number one. 00:36:22.05\00:36:23.09 Number two, verse 54. 00:36:23.12\00:36:24.25 "Whoever eats My flesh 00:36:24.28\00:36:25.85 and drinks My blood has eternal life, 00:36:25.88\00:36:27.79 and I will raise her up at the last day." 00:36:27.82\00:36:29.92 Here comes number three. 00:36:29.95\00:36:30.98 "For My flesh is food indeed, 00:36:31.01\00:36:32.99 and My blood is drink indeed." 00:36:33.02\00:36:34.88 And here comes number four. 00:36:34.91\00:36:35.94 "He who eats My flesh 00:36:35.97\00:36:37.47 and drinks My blood abides in Me, 00:36:37.50\00:36:40.21 and I in him." 00:36:40.24\00:36:43.36 That is revolting. 00:36:43.39\00:36:46.01 Can't miss it. 00:36:46.04\00:36:47.39 You know this earthquake in Turkey 00:36:47.42\00:36:48.74 we've been following just this week. 00:36:48.77\00:36:50.61 A previous earthquake 00:36:50.64\00:36:51.67 I'll never forget the story as long as I live. 00:36:51.70\00:36:53.44 The previous earthquake, a mother and little child 00:36:53.47\00:36:56.94 were trapped beneath the rubble for days. 00:36:56.97\00:36:59.64 They find it, halleluiah, found them alive 00:36:59.67\00:37:01.79 and they asked the mother, 00:37:01.82\00:37:02.85 how did you keep your little child alive? 00:37:02.88\00:37:05.26 And the mother said, I let my child drink my blood. 00:37:05.29\00:37:10.05 That's what it makes you feel, doesn't it? 00:37:10.08\00:37:11.35 Unless you eat My flesh and drink My blood you live. 00:37:14.93\00:37:21.21 That was on the border of revolting. 00:37:21.24\00:37:25.90 So what's Jesus saying here? 00:37:25.93\00:37:28.15 For a long time scholars have thought, 00:37:28.18\00:37:30.05 you know what He's doing, 00:37:30.08\00:37:31.11 He is slipping in a little homilies on the Lord's supper 00:37:31.14\00:37:34.56 because Matthew, Mark and Luke 00:37:34.59\00:37:36.28 all have the Lord supper in them 00:37:36.31\00:37:38.17 and there is no Lord supper in John, 00:37:38.20\00:37:40.63 no Lord supper. 00:37:40.66\00:37:42.15 So this is John's way of slipping the Lord's supper 00:37:42.18\00:37:44.19 in a little bit early to make sure that 00:37:44.22\00:37:45.96 he still get the value of Lord supper. 00:37:45.99\00:37:47.90 But scholars now and I'm Craig Keener 00:37:47.93\00:37:50.38 whom I'm leaning on rather heavily 00:37:50.41\00:37:53.91 in the writing of these teachings. 00:37:53.94\00:37:57.17 Craig Keener makes the point. 00:37:57.20\00:37:59.11 He says wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute 00:37:59.14\00:38:00.37 if this were really a Lord supper 00:38:00.40\00:38:02.32 a homilies there is something huge is missing, 00:38:02.35\00:38:05.51 the word wine is never used in the paschal 00:38:05.54\00:38:08.61 or the Passover supper and the Lord supper. 00:38:08.64\00:38:10.54 You always have bread and wine. 00:38:10.57\00:38:11.86 We have the bread, no word about wine. 00:38:11.89\00:38:14.34 And he says by the way, flesh, 00:38:14.37\00:38:17.25 the word here for flesh is socks in the Lord supper formula 00:38:17.28\00:38:20.66 it's not socks it's soma it's body. 00:38:20.69\00:38:23.66 Jesus says this is My body. 00:38:23.69\00:38:25.44 He never says this is My flesh broken for you. 00:38:25.47\00:38:28.80 Keener says John is doing this for a reason. 00:38:28.83\00:38:31.59 Now put it on the screen. 00:38:31.62\00:38:33.18 You have in your study guide as well. 00:38:33.21\00:38:34.53 "Flesh and blood." What's the point? 00:38:34.56\00:38:36.20 "Flesh and blood show the believer's 00:38:36.23\00:38:38.20 absolutely dependence on Christ's death. 00:38:38.23\00:38:40.85 John not only omits the final paschal 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.81 Lord supper meal in his Passion Narrative, 00:38:43.84\00:38:46.28 he makes Jesus actual death the real Passover." 00:38:46.31\00:38:50.91 Now listen, scholars, what happens is 00:38:50.94\00:38:53.11 the Passover occurs when Jesus dies 00:38:53.14\00:38:55.39 in John's gospel that's the Passover. 00:38:55.42\00:38:58.19 There is no Passover Thursday night. 00:38:58.22\00:39:00.53 The Passover is when He dies. 00:39:00.56\00:39:03.59 Keep reading. 00:39:03.62\00:39:04.65 "John plainly moves the Passover 00:39:04.68\00:39:06.24 from the Last Supper to the crucifixion. 00:39:06.27\00:39:08.58 In the context of the entire Gospel, 00:39:08.61\00:39:10.85 John's Eucharistic language 00:39:10.88\00:39:12.48 thus applies directly to Jesus' death 00:39:12.51\00:39:16.62 the way one partakes is through faith and the Spirit. 00:39:16.65\00:39:19.59 John's words invite his audience 00:39:19.62\00:39:21.10 to look to Christ's death itself, 00:39:21.13\00:39:22.95 not merely to those symbols which point to his death." 00:39:22.98\00:39:26.73 Now here's the point, listen carefully. 00:39:26.76\00:39:29.27 Sometimes we get to thinking 00:39:29.30\00:39:30.62 when we celebrate the Lord supper 00:39:30.65\00:39:32.30 that it's all wrapped up in the emblems themselves. 00:39:32.33\00:39:36.20 There are some of our friends who by the grace of God 00:39:36.23\00:39:40.17 would try to go to a mass every single day 00:39:40.20\00:39:42.70 so that they get the symbols and they become a part of Me. 00:39:42.73\00:39:47.16 But John is working overtime to remove, 00:39:47.19\00:39:51.23 to remove the focus on the symbols 00:39:51.26\00:39:53.64 and said, no, no, no, no, no. 00:39:53.67\00:39:54.87 What counts is Calvary itself the real flesh, 00:39:54.90\00:39:57.86 the real blood of the cross that's what Jesus is calling 00:39:57.89\00:40:03.55 you and me to come to, not the symbols, 00:40:03.58\00:40:07.39 but the event itself, Calvary, Calvary. 00:40:07.42\00:40:13.74 In fact, would you jot this down please. 00:40:13.77\00:40:15.12 "Christ's bold language is His call to His disciples 00:40:15.15\00:40:18.40 to meet Him at the foot of the cross." 00:40:18.43\00:40:20.15 When He says eat my flesh, drink My blood. 00:40:20.18\00:40:22.53 Come here, come here, quick, quick, quick, quick 00:40:22.56\00:40:24.39 come here to the foot of the cross. 00:40:24.42\00:40:25.79 Meet Me here as the Passover lamb. 00:40:25.82\00:40:28.31 So what does it mean? 00:40:31.38\00:40:33.29 What is that mean to eat the flesh 00:40:33.32\00:40:35.53 and drink the blood of Christ? 00:40:35.56\00:40:36.83 I want to end with this one more quotation. 00:40:36.86\00:40:38.90 Desire of Ages. 00:40:38.93\00:40:39.96 You have it in your study guide, 00:40:39.99\00:40:41.10 you have to fill it in. Let's go. 00:40:41.13\00:40:42.97 "To eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ 00:40:43.00\00:40:46.24 is to receive Him as a personal Savior." 00:40:46.27\00:40:49.53 Not a collective savior, not a campus wide savior, 00:40:49.56\00:40:51.92 not a congregational savior, personal your own, 00:40:51.95\00:40:55.13 not your family, not your daddy, 00:40:55.16\00:40:56.80 not your mommy, your Savior. 00:40:56.83\00:40:59.11 Have you accepted Him as your Savior? 00:40:59.14\00:41:01.39 That's what it means. 00:41:01.42\00:41:02.46 To accept Him as a personal Savior. 00:41:02.49\00:41:03.81 "Believing that He forgives my sins, 00:41:03.84\00:41:06.56 and that I am complete in Him. 00:41:06.59\00:41:08.32 It is by beholding His love" at the foot of the cross, 00:41:08.35\00:41:11.10 "by dwelling upon it, by drinking it in, 00:41:11.13\00:41:13.32 that we are to become partakers of His nature." 00:41:13.35\00:41:15.10 Now jot this down. 00:41:15.13\00:41:16.23 "What food is to the body, Christ must be to the soul." 00:41:16.26\00:41:21.09 We'll come back to that line. 00:41:21.12\00:41:22.27 That's the point of this radical metaphor. 00:41:22.30\00:41:26.40 "What food is to the body, Christ must be to the soul. 00:41:26.43\00:41:29.21 Food cannot benefit us unless we eat it, 00:41:29.24\00:41:31.57 unless it becomes a part of our being. 00:41:31.60\00:41:33.13 So Christ is of, no value to us 00:41:33.16\00:41:34.86 if we don't know His as a personal Savior. 00:41:34.89\00:41:36.82 A theoretical knowledge will do us no good." 00:41:36.85\00:41:38.85 I don't care how many religious hours 00:41:38.88\00:41:40.18 you have to take in order to get your degree. 00:41:40.21\00:41:42.02 Here in Andrews University it will matter a hell of beans 00:41:42.05\00:41:46.25 unless you personally encounter the Christ 00:41:46.28\00:41:48.79 that has been taught. 00:41:48.82\00:41:50.52 "We must feed upon Him, 00:41:50.55\00:41:52.04 we must receive Him into the heart, 00:41:52.07\00:41:54.28 so that His life becomes ours. 00:41:54.31\00:41:56.49 His love," I love this. 00:41:56.52\00:41:57.85 "His love, His grace, must be assimilated." 00:41:57.88\00:42:02.78 Take it in. 00:42:02.81\00:42:03.84 Take it in. 00:42:06.63\00:42:07.70 His love, and His grace, must be assimilated. 00:42:07.73\00:42:10.37 You say now come on, Dwight, give me some specific. 00:42:10.40\00:42:12.11 How can I eat the flesh 00:42:12.14\00:42:13.58 and drink the blood of my Lord Jesus Christ? 00:42:13.61\00:42:15.69 Let me leave these five with you here. 00:42:15.72\00:42:17.12 Jot this down. Would you please? 00:42:17.15\00:42:18.50 This is how. 00:42:18.53\00:42:19.57 Number one, Take time alone with Jesus daily. 00:42:19.60\00:42:25.11 You said, I've already heard this before. 00:42:25.14\00:42:26.43 You are hearing it again. 00:42:26.46\00:42:28.73 Take time alone with Jesus daily. 00:42:28.76\00:42:31.24 Number two, One slice a day, 00:42:31.27\00:42:33.76 one Gospel story a day. 00:42:33.79\00:42:35.70 One slice a day. 00:42:35.73\00:42:38.13 Number three, Chew, chew that slice. 00:42:38.16\00:42:42.36 Ruminate over it, brood over it, wrestle with it, 00:42:42.39\00:42:45.95 meditate out, chew the bread, chew it. 00:42:45.98\00:42:49.27 Number four, Respond to the picture of Jesus 00:42:49.30\00:42:52.63 that the Spirit will reveal to you. 00:42:52.66\00:42:54.75 You'll see a picture of Him and respond to that. 00:42:54.78\00:42:57.29 We can say this is how I respond, Lord. 00:42:57.32\00:42:59.68 And finally number five, Kneel, 00:42:59.71\00:43:02.57 kneel before the crucified One and offer Him your day. 00:43:02.60\00:43:06.50 You say, Dwight, you just say offer Him your life. 00:43:06.53\00:43:08.34 Of course, but He needs your day, 00:43:08.37\00:43:10.79 today, and today, and today until I come 00:43:10.82\00:43:12.89 give me your day, just give today. 00:43:12.92\00:43:15.87 Offer to Him today. 00:43:15.90\00:43:18.49 Now is that rocket science, ladies and gentlemen? 00:43:18.52\00:43:20.19 It is not rocket science. 00:43:20.22\00:43:21.31 Is that difficult? It is not difficult. 00:43:21.34\00:43:25.00 The Desire of Ages put it. 00:43:25.03\00:43:26.43 His life, His love, His grace must be assimilated. 00:43:26.46\00:43:30.47 So in a few moments when the last time when I said, 00:43:30.50\00:43:34.52 if you would like to tweet this message, 00:43:34.55\00:43:36.15 if you would like to tweet this teaching 00:43:36.18\00:43:38.44 to your friends and by the way, I don't care 00:44:05.98\00:44:07.42 if you misspell the word soul. 00:44:07.45\00:44:08.84 I don't care if you spell it sole instead of soul, 00:44:12.09\00:44:15.47 because it's still true. 00:44:15.50\00:44:17.05 Mention I lived by bread alone, 00:44:17.08\00:44:18.29 but every word that proceeds 00:44:18.32\00:44:20.14 out of the mouth of Christ our Lord. 00:44:20.17\00:44:22.28 Jesus is your soul food. 00:44:22.31\00:44:26.94 Have you had your bread today? 00:44:26.97\00:44:30.73 Jesus is your soul food. 00:44:30.76\00:44:32.64 You say, come on, Dwight, that's too simple, 00:44:32.67\00:44:34.56 I need something little more complicated. 00:44:34.59\00:44:36.19 I need to be really stretching me intellectually. 00:44:36.22\00:44:38.88 My friend, that's been the problem. 00:44:38.91\00:44:41.21 We have saw to stretch each other 00:44:41.24\00:44:42.57 till we are stretched out. 00:44:42.60\00:44:45.21 We're living at the edge of eternity, 00:44:45.24\00:44:46.99 we are at the end of time and here is my concern. 00:44:47.02\00:44:49.34 I'll be just--this is pastor to pastor time now. 00:44:49.37\00:44:51.71 No, no, here's my concern. 00:44:51.74\00:44:54.23 I'm concerned that is the people, 00:44:54.26\00:44:57.88 because we have no assurance if this really is the end 00:44:57.91\00:45:02.13 that we are treating life now business as usual. 00:45:02.16\00:45:06.90 The problem with our community of faith, 00:45:06.93\00:45:08.29 I don't want to say this, gentlemen. 00:45:08.32\00:45:09.56 The problem with our community of faith 00:45:09.59\00:45:11.10 it's a okay problem to have. 00:45:11.13\00:45:14.47 We tend to frontload everything 00:45:14.50\00:45:17.62 at the beginning of the spiritual journey. 00:45:17.65\00:45:19.19 My friend Ron Clouse I tell you what, 00:45:19.22\00:45:21.45 I've been just praising God tonight is his last night and 00:45:21.48\00:45:23.60 he has been anointed by the Holy Spirit. 00:45:23.63\00:45:26.02 He want to catch those one areas because he haven't gone to any, 00:45:26.05\00:45:28.11 the others coming just pack it into 00:45:28.14\00:45:30.15 the youth chapel tonight his last lecture. 00:45:30.18\00:45:32.99 But my friend Ron Clouse has been teaching, 00:45:33.02\00:45:35.36 teaching for four weeks now, but we tend to that, 00:45:35.39\00:45:38.65 we kind of frontload it at the beginning of the journey 00:45:38.68\00:45:42.47 and then most of us come in that way, 00:45:42.50\00:45:44.07 and then we spend the rest of our lives 00:45:44.10\00:45:45.48 just kind of just feeding off of the fumes. 00:45:45.51\00:45:49.60 We miss the metaphor. 00:45:49.63\00:45:51.33 The point of the metaphor is now let me show it to you. 00:45:51.36\00:45:54.04 The point of the metaphor is here in verse 35 00:45:54.07\00:45:56.22 we just swift through it a moment ago. 00:45:56.25\00:45:57.66 Now read this and you are hearing verse 35. 00:45:57.69\00:45:59.64 "And Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life.' 00:45:59.67\00:46:02.41 " Now watch what happens in the original language. 00:46:02.44\00:46:04.69 He who the Greek reads keeps on coming to me. 00:46:04.72\00:46:10.88 "He who keeps on coming to Me shall never hunger. 00:46:10.91\00:46:14.16 And she who keeps on believing in Me 00:46:14.19\00:46:17.08 shall never thirst." 00:46:17.11\00:46:18.98 It's not front-end loaded, it's frontloaded at all. 00:46:19.01\00:46:21.92 It's day, after day, after day. 00:46:21.95\00:46:24.04 You got to keep coming. 00:46:24.07\00:46:25.24 The story Jesus told about the 10 virgins, 00:46:25.27\00:46:27.17 five of them when the crisis hits 00:46:27.20\00:46:29.82 and the world is falling apart five of them 00:46:29.85\00:46:31.99 have not been coming every day. 00:46:32.02\00:46:33.94 They have nothing, 00:46:33.97\00:46:35.00 there is nothing they can scare up, 00:46:35.03\00:46:36.44 there is nothing-- you can't borrow it from your friends, 00:46:36.47\00:46:38.35 you just give me your spirituality, 00:46:38.38\00:46:40.05 give me bread of life that you been eating. 00:46:40.08\00:46:41.66 You can't it's too late, it's too late. 00:46:41.69\00:46:44.39 If you are waiting for adrenaline to be your call 00:46:44.42\00:46:46.77 to draw near to Jesus, can't be adrenaline. 00:46:46.80\00:46:49.44 I am the bread of life. 00:46:49.47\00:46:52.54 You come back to Me continues repetitive action, 00:46:52.57\00:46:56.96 you come back to Me. 00:46:56.99\00:46:58.41 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, 00:46:58.44\00:47:02.02 the Lord our righteousness 00:47:02.05\00:47:03.67 blessed are those who hunger and thirst after me. 00:47:03.70\00:47:06.47 Is what He is saying. 00:47:06.50\00:47:07.56 I am the bread of life. 00:47:07.59\00:47:10.55 I am your bread today, I am your bread today, 00:47:10.58\00:47:13.26 I am your bread today. 00:47:13.29\00:47:14.32 There is no tomorrow with me. 00:47:14.35\00:47:15.55 I am your bread today, I am your bread today. 00:47:15.58\00:47:17.77 I am what you are hungry for, come to me. 00:47:17.80\00:47:23.55 Some of us are thinking well, you know, 00:47:23.58\00:47:25.02 I'm just-- this is so simple, 00:47:25.05\00:47:28.44 this devotional life business. 00:47:28.47\00:47:30.57 My friends, we will rise or fall 00:47:30.60\00:47:34.22 on the simplicity of this truth the bread of life. 00:47:34.25\00:47:38.61 If we don't get it we starved to death 00:47:38.64\00:47:42.94 and its curtains spiritually. 00:47:42.97\00:47:46.43 Eat, and eat, and eat. 00:47:46.46\00:47:50.42 Oh, Dwight, can I do it on my iPhone? 00:47:50.45\00:47:52.03 I don't care where you do it. Forget how much time. 00:47:59.18\00:48:00.74 That's always a question we ask and then we get-- 00:48:00.77\00:48:02.73 we get rare road side tracked, forget it. 00:48:02.76\00:48:06.11 Time, one slice, chew it, respond to it, 00:48:06.14\00:48:12.41 kneel down and say God 00:48:12.44\00:48:14.07 bread of life let us go together. 00:48:14.10\00:48:16.51 Ladies and gentlemen, that's what it 00:52:42.16\00:52:46.76 of a vast domain 00:52:46.79\00:52:51.48 Or be held in sin's 00:52:51.51\00:52:55.98 dread sway 00:52:56.01\00:53:00.74 I'd rather have Jesus 00:53:00.77\00:53:05.35 than to His holy name 00:53:54.73\00:54:00.01 Than to be the king 00:54:00.04\00:54:04.77 of a vast domain 00:54:04.80\00:54:09.85 Or be held in sin's 00:54:09.88\00:54:14.59 dread sway 00:54:14.62\00:54:19.97 I'd rather have Jesus 00:54:20.00\00:54:25.46 than anything 00:54:25.49\00:54:30.87 This world affords today 00:54:30.90\00:54:38.87 And so every morning an answer to that bread in us inside ourselves 00:54:52.25\00:54:55.58 and we feed on that bread for the journey of that day. 00:54:55.61\00:54:59.67 Next morning we're back down. 00:54:59.70\00:55:01.21 We break bread expression of eating His flesh 00:55:57.39\00:56:00.06 and drinking His blood, 00:56:00.09\00:56:01.41 but at the foot of the cross we do the radical, 00:56:01.44\00:56:05.29 we break bread alone with our bread of life, 00:56:05.32\00:56:09.78 Savior and companion we assimilate, 00:56:09.81\00:56:13.26 we chew, we swallow, we go forth 00:56:13.29\00:56:17.96 for this people, Holy Father,
