00:05:03.85\00:05:10.64 I'm going home to live with God 00:05:10.67\00:05:18.35 With God 00:05:18.38\00:05:22.72 Powerful, powerful, perfect song for a Sabbath 00:05:34.15\00:05:38.52 in which we are celebrating two anniversaries, 00:05:38.55\00:05:41.36 perfect song they just sang. 00:05:41.39\00:05:45.18 It's in the confluence of these two anniversaries 00:05:45.21\00:05:50.24 and their juxtaposition today, 00:05:50.27\00:05:54.93 that I have been pondering God's call to the chosen. 00:05:54.96\00:06:01.83 One anniversary for four days from today and 490 years ago. 00:06:01.86\00:06:09.17 A young German, priest, 00:06:09.20\00:06:14.15 pastor and professor 00:06:14.18\00:06:17.23 strode across the least room plaza 00:06:17.26\00:06:20.28 of the tiny little village, 00:06:20.31\00:06:22.69 walked up to the castle church door, 00:06:22.72\00:06:26.68 wooden, pounded onto that door, 00:06:26.71\00:06:31.20 95 challenges to the sale of indulgences 00:06:31.23\00:06:36.72 by the church of the middle ages. 00:06:36.75\00:06:38.98 October 31, 1517 in the village of Wittenberg, 00:06:39.01\00:06:45.94 just in Germany four weeks ago, 00:06:45.97\00:06:47.99 just to be in that nation where Martin Luther. 00:06:48.02\00:06:52.78 Wow, Martin Luther, 00:06:52.81\00:06:55.74 unwittingly ignited the spiritual revolution 00:06:55.77\00:07:02.81 that we still call the Protestor Reformation. 00:07:02.84\00:07:06.39 Four days from now, the anniversary, 00:07:06.42\00:07:08.18 four days before today another anniversary. 00:07:08.21\00:07:12.55 Four days plus 163 years ago, 00:07:12.58\00:07:16.01 a middle age American Baptist farmer 00:07:16.04\00:07:17.68 turned preacher in upstate New York, 00:07:17.71\00:07:19.74 quietly awaited the fulfillment of four passionate years 00:07:19.77\00:07:23.59 of preaching his heart out. 00:07:23.62\00:07:26.69 So convicted and convince was he of the veracity 00:07:26.72\00:07:29.68 of the Daniels prophecies 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.01 that he had unashamedly predicted on the authority 00:07:31.04\00:07:34.44 of the word of God that on October 22, 1844 00:07:34.47\00:07:37.57 Jesus would return to this planet. 00:07:37.60\00:07:41.91 So four days ago plus 163 years ago, 00:07:41.94\00:07:46.63 William Miller and thousands of Christian believers 00:07:46.66\00:07:50.20 up and down the eastern seaboard 00:07:50.23\00:07:52.11 counted the hours until Jesus would come. 00:07:52.14\00:07:57.65 Soon I will be done with the troubles 00:07:57.68\00:08:00.35 of the world, going home. 00:08:00.38\00:08:04.55 They hoped and prayed but Jesus didn't come. 00:08:04.58\00:08:09.41 So 490 years after Martin Luther 00:08:09.44\00:08:13.98 and 163 years after William Miller, 00:08:14.01\00:08:16.68 we're still here. 00:08:16.71\00:08:19.57 The Protestor Reformation is still in progress. 00:08:19.60\00:08:21.99 In fact, I carry in the back of my Bible 00:08:22.02\00:08:23.45 a quotation just to buck my spirits 00:08:23.48\00:08:25.64 up at times when I get discouraged. 00:08:25.67\00:08:27.40 A quotation that declares the reformation 00:08:27.43\00:08:29.71 did not end with Martin Luther 00:08:29.74\00:08:30.95 but that reformation that he ignited shall continue 00:08:30.98\00:08:33.54 until the last day of earth's history, 00:08:33.57\00:08:35.97 that reformation must go on. 00:08:36.00\00:08:38.12 And it occurs to me in a university setting like this 00:08:38.15\00:08:40.72 that we have some young Martin Luther's here. 00:08:40.75\00:08:45.07 We have some young William Millers here 00:08:45.10\00:08:48.61 or Wilhelmina Millers here. 00:08:48.64\00:08:53.86 We've got you here, God has already spotted you. 00:08:53.89\00:08:57.34 You weren't born by accident, 00:08:57.37\00:08:59.27 this series began reminding you, 00:08:59.30\00:09:00.87 you are a child a destiny. 00:09:00.90\00:09:03.41 You are you because God called you to live. 00:09:03.44\00:09:07.61 So we're still here, 00:09:07.64\00:09:10.11 which is why we're tracking the footsteps of the chosen 00:09:10.14\00:09:15.26 through the wilderness to the Promise Land. 00:09:15.29\00:09:16.82 We're on the same journey going to the promise land, 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.51 also wandering in this wilderness, 00:09:19.54\00:09:21.52 this series "The Chosen." 00:09:21.55\00:09:22.88 We come to the heart of this series 00:09:22.91\00:09:24.67 for critical issues to the children of Israel 00:09:24.70\00:09:27.26 as they tiptoed across those hot deserts sands 00:09:27.29\00:09:30.56 and obviously these four issues are critical to us 00:09:30.59\00:09:32.93 because in our pulpit survey, 00:09:32.96\00:09:34.50 this last spring you wrote it down. 00:09:34.53\00:09:36.28 I want to know about this, 00:09:36.31\00:09:37.35 this, this and this and so these four 00:09:37.38\00:09:39.95 what do we do with the prophet, 00:09:39.98\00:09:41.39 that was last time you and I were together. 00:09:41.42\00:09:43.48 How to stone the prophet? 00:09:43.51\00:09:45.58 Question number two, what do we do with the diet? 00:09:45.61\00:09:48.27 Read, alcohol, that would be today. 00:09:48.30\00:09:52.24 Question number three, what do we do with the dress? 00:09:52.27\00:09:55.79 That's coming up next Sabbath, 00:09:55.82\00:09:57.45 how much of naked is acceptable. 00:09:57.48\00:10:00.18 Question number four, what do we do with the sex? 00:10:00.21\00:10:04.38 That's two Sabbaths from now. 00:10:04.41\00:10:06.46 How to live without sex for a while? 00:10:06.49\00:10:09.57 And in the second service only, as we will today, 00:10:09.60\00:10:12.27 we will end with live Q and A. 00:10:12.30\00:10:17.32 Any question that you have on the subject today, 00:10:17.35\00:10:20.71 I hope you'll ask and I hope I'll have the answers. 00:10:20.74\00:10:23.19 But let's hear the question, we'll check together. 00:10:23.22\00:10:26.46 So today, you get a question 00:10:26.49\00:10:27.75 in the middle of the presentation here, 00:10:27.78\00:10:28.81 scribble it down. 00:10:28.84\00:10:29.87 All right, just scribble it down 00:10:29.90\00:10:30.95 then step up to one of these mics, 00:10:30.98\00:10:32.37 then we'll be ready to go. 00:10:32.40\00:10:33.43 Let's pray. 00:10:33.46\00:10:34.52 Oh, God, soon I will be done with the troubles of the world, 00:10:34.55\00:10:36.98 going home to live with God. 00:10:37.01\00:10:38.88 That passion has ignited generations 00:10:38.91\00:10:44.02 since the days of Enoch on this planet. 00:10:44.05\00:10:47.72 We're not abandoning that hope, that our university raised up 00:10:47.75\00:10:51.51 because of that hope as we worship today, 00:10:51.54\00:10:55.34 in Holy Scripture. 00:10:55.37\00:10:56.81 Please, please let this be clear, 00:10:56.84\00:10:59.85 that the spirit of access to my mind 00:10:59.88\00:11:01.35 and all of our minds, 00:11:01.38\00:11:03.22 for the sake of Christ Jesus 00:11:03.25\00:11:04.61 in whose name we pray. Amen. 00:11:04.64\00:11:07.68 So I'm going into the cafeteria 00:11:07.71\00:11:09.06 this last week to have to the lunch. 00:11:09.09\00:11:11.08 I like to eat the cafeteria food 00:11:11.11\00:11:12.54 because it's great food. 00:11:12.57\00:11:14.17 I go into the cafeteria to eat 00:11:14.20\00:11:16.46 and I'm always looking for somebody to sit with 00:11:16.49\00:11:17.98 and four students said, 00:11:18.01\00:11:19.04 "Hey, pastor, come on over here." 00:11:19.07\00:11:20.40 I love to eat with students. 00:11:20.43\00:11:21.92 So I sit down and we're following a conversation 00:11:21.95\00:11:23.85 and I noticed on the cafeteria food table 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.61 that we were sitting at. 00:11:26.64\00:11:27.68 These little sandwich boards 00:11:27.71\00:11:28.78 you know these are little cardboard triangle thing 00:11:28.81\00:11:30.42 that they put to advertise stuff. 00:11:30.45\00:11:32.48 And so I pick it up, apparently it's health week, 00:11:32.51\00:11:34.68 either next week or this week 00:11:34.71\00:11:35.79 I'm not sure but there is health week going on. 00:11:35.82\00:11:38.58 And then there's this quotation from Mark Twain 00:11:38.61\00:11:41.56 and so I had my receipt from eating there, 00:11:41.59\00:11:45.00 great food and a great price. 00:11:45.03\00:11:48.17 And on the back of the receipt I scribble down, 00:11:48.20\00:11:50.74 I scribble down Mark Twain, 00:11:50.77\00:11:52.59 okay, this is a quotation from Mark Twain. 00:11:52.62\00:11:54.62 It sets us up for our teaching this morning. 00:11:54.65\00:11:56.99 The Mark Twain once said, 00:11:57.02\00:11:58.58 "The only way to keep your health, 00:11:58.61\00:12:02.83 is to eat what you don't want." 00:12:02.86\00:12:05.01 All right, "drink what you don't like 00:12:05.04\00:12:09.56 and do what you rather not and you'll keep healthy." 00:12:09.59\00:12:14.14 With that thought in mind, 00:12:14.17\00:12:15.20 would you open your Bible please 00:12:15.23\00:12:16.26 to the New Testament the book first Corinthians 10, 00:12:16.29\00:12:20.06 forget about Mark Twain, 00:12:20.09\00:12:21.15 we don't need him we'll take Saint Paul 00:12:21.18\00:12:22.64 instead 1 Corinthians 10. 00:12:22.67\00:12:25.72 Didn't bring a Bible, you really need to track 00:12:25.75\00:12:27.23 as we got a dynamite story coming up 00:12:27.26\00:12:28.93 and so you want to grab the pew Bible in front of you. 00:12:28.96\00:12:31.57 This will be page 772 New King James Version 00:12:31.60\00:12:34.91 that'll be what I'm in this morning 00:12:34.94\00:12:36.58 1 Corinthians 10, 1 Corinthians 10. 00:12:36.61\00:12:42.03 All right, this is a perfect set up by the way, 00:12:42.06\00:12:45.66 these few verses set us up 00:12:45.69\00:12:47.01 for the next three presentations 00:12:47.04\00:12:48.78 covering the heart of this series. 00:12:48.81\00:12:50.32 Here we go, so this is 1 Corinthians 10 verse 1, 00:12:50.35\00:12:52.69 "Moreover brethren" 00:12:52.72\00:12:53.91 I like to say brothers and sisters, 00:12:53.94\00:12:55.41 the new translations that's what I like about them, 00:12:55.44\00:12:57.08 their gender inclusive. 00:12:57.11\00:12:58.73 "Moreover brothers and sisters, 00:12:58.76\00:13:00.38 I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers" 00:13:00.41\00:13:03.54 oh, time out Paul, who're you writing to? 00:13:03.57\00:13:05.34 I'm writing to a bunch of pagans 00:13:05.37\00:13:06.52 who become Christians in court. 00:13:06.55\00:13:08.15 Are you serious? 00:13:08.18\00:13:09.21 You mean, once we're baptized into Jesus Christ, 00:13:09.24\00:13:11.97 the whole story of Israel becomes ours? 00:13:12.00\00:13:14.51 That's my point boy. 00:13:14.54\00:13:16.17 Our fathers, I'm calling them our fathers. 00:13:16.20\00:13:19.08 "Moreover brothers and sisters, 00:13:19.11\00:13:20.25 I do not want you to be unaware 00:13:20.28\00:13:21.57 that all our fathers were under the cloud 00:13:21.60\00:13:25.37 all pass to the sea," that would be the Red Sea. 00:13:25.40\00:13:27.81 Verse 2, "all were baptized into Moses 00:13:27.84\00:13:30.68 in the cloud and the sea," 00:13:30.71\00:13:32.72 and that really feel strange, 00:13:32.75\00:13:34.10 I mean baptized into Moses, please. 00:13:34.13\00:13:36.22 What's going on here? 00:13:36.25\00:13:37.28 Here's Paul's point there was a cloud overhead, 00:13:37.31\00:13:39.49 so there's water content, 00:13:39.52\00:13:40.93 there's water on this side of the Red Sea. 00:13:40.96\00:13:42.66 Water on this side, they went under the water. 00:13:42.69\00:13:44.88 Paul is saying, and by the way, 00:13:44.91\00:13:47.53 they're baptized into their leader. 00:13:47.56\00:13:50.21 It's a metaphor for Christian baptism. 00:13:50.24\00:13:51.83 When you're baptized into Christ, 00:13:51.86\00:13:53.09 he's your leader you go into the water 00:13:53.12\00:13:54.69 and you come out certain of who your leader is. 00:13:54.72\00:13:56.78 That's what Paul's saying, 00:13:56.81\00:13:57.84 so they were all baptized into Moses. 00:13:57.87\00:13:59.73 And now notice this verse 3, 00:13:59.76\00:14:00.94 "All ate the same spiritual food 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.17 because it was a supernatural in origin, 00:14:03.20\00:14:05.50 all drank the same spirit to drink 00:14:05.53\00:14:07.67 because it was supernatural in origin. 00:14:07.70\00:14:10.47 For they drank of that spiritual rock 00:14:10.50\00:14:12.32 that followed them and that rock was Christ." 00:14:12.35\00:14:14.88 Hallelujah, when you're wandering 00:14:14.91\00:14:16.79 through the hot desert sands of life, 00:14:16.82\00:14:18.77 "I've got" Paul says, "I've got great news for you. 00:14:18.80\00:14:21.09 There is a rock that will be your shade, 00:14:21.12\00:14:24.02 your shelter, your safety, and your salvation." 00:14:24.05\00:14:27.67 Thank you, Jesus. The rock is Christ. 00:14:27.70\00:14:30.48 You will find that rock in your wandering 00:14:30.51\00:14:32.35 through this university 00:14:32.38\00:14:34.60 and through the rest of your life, 00:14:34.63\00:14:35.96 that rock will always be there. 00:14:35.99\00:14:38.42 Uh-oh, but some bad news verse 5, 00:14:38.45\00:14:40.39 "But with most of them God was not well pleased, 00:14:40.42\00:14:44.51 for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness." 00:14:44.54\00:14:46.52 i.e., they never made it to the promise land. 00:14:46.55\00:14:49.94 Died, little burial mounds tracking their journey, 00:14:49.97\00:14:53.97 little humps, little humps, one by one, 00:14:54.00\00:14:56.46 an entire generation is married. 00:14:56.49\00:14:58.29 Oh, what's going on here? 00:14:58.32\00:14:59.41 Verse 6, "Now these things became are examples, 00:14:59.44\00:15:03.31 to the intent that we should not lust 00:15:03.34\00:15:07.25 after evil thing as they also lusted." 00:15:07.28\00:15:10.06 I need to tell you that the that the Greek word 00:15:10.09\00:15:11.26 for lust here is epithumeo. 00:15:11.29\00:15:13.33 It means to desire deeply. 00:15:13.36\00:15:14.88 It is not a sin to desire deeply, 00:15:14.91\00:15:16.74 you can come on, God majored with desires. 00:15:16.77\00:15:18.75 So desire deeply just don't desire that 00:15:18.78\00:15:21.69 which will kill you, 00:15:21.72\00:15:23.03 just don't desire what will kill you. 00:15:23.06\00:15:24.77 That punch line is so important to Paul that he repeats it. 00:15:29.63\00:15:32.34 He does it in the verse 6 and dropped down to verse 11. 00:15:32.37\00:15:34.49 All over again, 00:15:34.52\00:15:35.56 "Now all these things happen to them as examples, 00:15:35.59\00:15:38.98 and they were written for our admonition 00:15:39.01\00:15:41.36 upon whom the ends of the ages have come." 00:15:41.39\00:15:46.12 Paul's point, the story of the chosen 00:15:46.15\00:15:48.50 in the beginning will be book end 00:15:48.53\00:15:51.26 by the story of the chosen in the ending, 00:15:51.29\00:15:54.07 in the-- they upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 00:15:54.10\00:15:58.84 They'll be the story and by the way Paul says, 00:15:58.87\00:16:00.96 their story is preserved here 00:16:00.99\00:16:02.99 so that the story of our movement 00:16:03.02\00:16:05.31 will be protected over here. 00:16:05.34\00:16:06.98 That's my point, Paul says. 00:16:07.01\00:16:08.35 Learn the lessons that they went through. 00:16:08.38\00:16:10.97 In fact, that point so critical 00:16:11.00\00:16:12.03 would you grab a study guide out. 00:16:12.06\00:16:13.39 Is it there in your worship bulletin, 00:16:13.42\00:16:14.63 pull your study guide out, please. 00:16:14.66\00:16:15.93 Thank you, ushers, you're gonna want to study guide 00:16:15.96\00:16:18.46 we're going to get to alcohol-- 8 resilient factors. 00:16:18.49\00:16:21.39 You want this list, trust me, hold your hand up, 00:16:21.42\00:16:23.52 if you don't have a study guide. 00:16:23.55\00:16:24.80 We have enough for everybody in the balcony, 00:16:24.83\00:16:27.34 here in the front, hold your hand up, 00:16:27.37\00:16:29.42 take your study guide out let me say to those of you 00:16:29.45\00:16:31.44 watching on television right now. 00:16:31.47\00:16:33.01 Delighted to have you. 00:16:33.04\00:16:34.07 Let me put our website on the screen for you, 00:16:34.10\00:16:35.71 "www" see it there on your screen 00:16:35.74\00:16:37.75 www.pmchurch.tv. 00:16:37.78\00:16:42.36 As soon as you go there you'll see different logos 00:16:42.39\00:16:43.99 for the various sermon series 00:16:44.02\00:16:45.16 this is the one called "The Chosen." 00:16:45.19\00:16:46.67 Click onto "The Chosen" 00:16:46.70\00:16:47.73 and it will show you the teachings, 00:16:47.76\00:16:49.42 you want this teaching, 00:16:49.45\00:16:50.81 "How to eat drink and be merry without getting stoned." 00:16:50.84\00:16:54.82 Click on to that and it will say study guide. 00:16:54.85\00:16:57.75 You will have the identical study guide 00:16:57.78\00:17:00.13 we're gonna go through this morning together. 00:17:00.16\00:17:01.87 So if you're watching on DVD 00:17:01.90\00:17:03.03 just hit the pause get that and then rejoin us please. 00:17:03.06\00:17:06.55 All right, the sentence at the top, let's fill it up. 00:17:06.58\00:17:09.57 First sentence of the study guide. 00:17:09.60\00:17:11.26 Their story was preserved 00:17:11.29\00:17:12.69 so that our movement might be protected. 00:17:12.72\00:17:15.98 Key point, protected, keep your pen moving. 00:17:16.01\00:17:19.88 The lessons of the chosen in the beginning 00:17:19.91\00:17:22.26 must be lessons for the chosen at the ending. 00:17:22.29\00:17:25.78 Some of you are still getting your study guides, 00:17:25.81\00:17:27.48 let me just remind you 00:17:27.51\00:17:28.92 that if you don't get an answer here, 00:17:28.95\00:17:30.10 go to our website. 00:17:30.13\00:17:31.16 The answers are at the bottom of all the study guide 00:17:31.19\00:17:33.29 so you'll be able to get what you missed here. 00:17:33.32\00:17:36.63 Now let me repeat that number two, 00:17:36.66\00:17:38.01 the lessons of the chosen in the beginning 00:17:38.04\00:17:39.70 must be the lessons for the chosen at the ending. 00:17:39.73\00:17:42.24 Paul says, remember their story what story do you suppose 00:17:42.27\00:17:45.00 Paul is talking about here in verse 6? 00:17:45.03\00:17:47.57 Ah, let's track Israel for a couple days 00:17:47.60\00:17:50.51 in the wilderness. 00:17:50.54\00:17:51.67 Go back to the fourth book in the Bible, 00:17:51.70\00:17:53.39 that would be the book of Numbers. 00:17:53.42\00:17:55.48 In our teaching last time, how to stone the prophet? 00:17:55.51\00:17:59.13 We were also in Numbers, go back to Numbers, please, 00:17:59.16\00:18:02.67 only this time we're going to be in Numbers 11. 00:18:02.70\00:18:06.07 I believe, last time we were Numbers 12. 00:18:06.10\00:18:07.56 So go back to Numbers 11, 00:18:07.59\00:18:10.19 Paul says, I want to tell you-- 00:18:10.22\00:18:11.27 I want to remind you of a story. 00:18:11.30\00:18:13.55 We'll be reminded right here, Numbers 11, 00:18:13.58\00:18:16.69 oh, I didn't give you the page number, 101. 00:18:16.72\00:18:18.88 If you're looking for it there in the Old Testament, 101, 00:18:18.91\00:18:21.82 Numbers 11: 4, " Now the mixed multitude" 00:18:21.85\00:18:27.18 I need to just hit the pause button right there 00:18:27.21\00:18:28.57 because scholars are scratching their heads 00:18:28.60\00:18:29.91 and saying who, who, who are these? 00:18:29.94\00:18:32.53 They're not quite sure who they are. 00:18:32.56\00:18:34.31 One commentator says, it really out-- 00:18:34.34\00:18:35.89 The Hebrew ought to be translated, 00:18:35.92\00:18:37.06 now the rift raft, riff-raff, 00:18:37.09\00:18:41.47 what seems clear is that when Israel fled 00:18:41.50\00:18:44.95 in that midnight hour from Egypt. 00:18:44.98\00:18:47.36 They were Egyptians they said, we are going with you. 00:18:47.39\00:18:49.72 You've just messed up our pantheon of Gods-- 00:18:49.75\00:18:52.26 we're going with your God. 00:18:52.29\00:18:53.68 He must be the strongest around we'll follow you. 00:18:53.71\00:18:56.03 So there is this, there's this-- 00:18:56.06\00:18:57.72 there's this crowd within the community of faith. 00:18:57.75\00:19:00.17 There's always a crowd within the community of faith. 00:19:00.20\00:19:02.52 There's this crowd, 00:19:02.55\00:19:04.28 their bodies are in the community 00:19:04.31\00:19:06.92 but their hearts are back in Egypt. 00:19:06.95\00:19:10.22 Kind of like Mrs. Lot who left her heart in Sodom, 00:19:10.25\00:19:12.49 you remember that? Who will give us flesh to eat? 00:21:39.19\00:21:44.52 Look at this, "We remember the fish 00:21:44.55\00:21:48.69 which we ate freely in Egypt the cucumbers, 00:21:48.72\00:21:52.03 the melons, the leaks, the onions and garlic." 00:21:52.06\00:21:55.64 It get's you hungry for dinner, doesn't it? 00:21:55.67\00:21:57.77 Verse 6 "But now own our whole being is dried up. 00:21:57.80\00:22:01.90 There is nothing at all except this manna" 00:22:01.93\00:22:05.92 I'm sick of this manna, 00:22:09.99\00:22:12.57 "nothing but this manna before our eyes." 00:22:12.60\00:22:16.94 We went to-- this summer as a Nelson 00:22:16.97\00:22:19.96 kind of a family thing, a tribe 00:22:19.99\00:22:21.48 and we conducted 00:22:21.51\00:22:22.71 for simultaneous evangelistic crusades 00:22:22.74\00:22:25.34 in a great city La Ceiba, 00:22:25.37\00:22:26.58 and if you've gone south of the border 00:22:26.61\00:22:27.85 you know this is true, 00:22:27.88\00:22:28.96 those cooks south of the border 00:22:28.99\00:22:30.27 they can take just a little bit a cornmeal, 00:22:30.30\00:22:31.87 have you noticed this? 00:22:31.90\00:22:32.93 Just a little bit of cornmeal 00:22:32.96\00:22:34.28 and they can make soft tortillas, 00:22:34.31\00:22:36.79 they can make hard taco shells they can make stuffed burritos. 00:22:36.82\00:22:40.02 They can make crunchy chips 00:22:40.05\00:22:41.39 all from just a little bit a cornmeal. 00:22:41.42\00:22:44.07 And they come up north of the border 00:22:44.10\00:22:45.31 by the way and they say, what is up with you Americans? 00:22:45.34\00:22:47.58 You are always eating bread. You have bread in the morning. 00:22:47.61\00:22:49.30 You call it toast. 00:22:49.33\00:22:50.39 You have bread at lunch, you call it sandwiches. 00:22:50.42\00:22:51.83 You put everything under the sun 00:22:51.86\00:22:53.19 between those slices. 00:22:53.22\00:22:54.37 You have bread at night, you call them dinner rolls. 00:22:54.40\00:22:55.83 Why are you always eating bread? 00:22:55.86\00:22:58.30 And if you go over to China, 00:22:58.33\00:22:59.52 morning noon and night forever its rice. 00:22:59.55\00:23:03.24 Cultures tend to gravitate around a particular staple 00:23:03.27\00:23:07.20 and the children of Israel are no exception. 00:23:07.23\00:23:09.77 Only for them, it was genuine miracle food. 00:23:09.80\00:23:12.79 I watched television, I see these advertising oh, 00:23:12.82\00:23:14.93 this a great miracle food, no, 00:23:14.96\00:23:16.39 they had genuine miracle food and it was called manna. 00:23:16.42\00:23:21.01 It was a white, seedy, 00:23:21.04\00:23:22.56 frost like substance that appeared 00:23:22.59\00:23:24.31 with the dew every morning, six days a week. 00:23:24.34\00:23:26.60 So you had manna for breakfast and lunch and supper on Sunday. 00:23:26.63\00:23:31.07 And then on Monday you had manna for breakfast 00:23:31.10\00:23:33.06 and lunch and supper. 00:23:33.09\00:23:35.23 And then Tuesday, 00:23:35.26\00:23:36.73 manna breakfast lunch and supper 00:23:36.76\00:23:38.59 and you get the picture. 00:23:38.62\00:23:39.66 It's just manna the whole blooming week until-- 00:23:39.69\00:23:46.89 until you come to Sabbath. 00:23:46.92\00:23:49.78 No manna, oh, it's true. 00:23:49.81\00:23:52.04 You're gonna eat manna again, 00:23:52.07\00:23:53.61 it just don't come on the Sabbath. 00:23:53.64\00:23:56.14 Something supernatural. 00:23:56.17\00:23:57.66 God says I want to tell you something, guys, 00:23:57.69\00:23:59.51 I want to tell you about my Seventh-day Sabbath. 00:23:59.54\00:24:00.91 I've given this to the human race, 00:24:00.94\00:24:02.10 I did from the beginning in Genesis 00:24:02.13\00:24:03.97 and I'm gonna, by a supernatural miracle, 00:24:04.00\00:24:05.97 show you which day of the week. 00:24:06.00\00:24:07.16 You don't have calendars on your tent walls, 00:24:07.19\00:24:08.26 that's okay. 00:24:08.29\00:24:09.32 I'll show you every Seventh-day. 00:24:09.35\00:24:10.89 There won't be a drop of manna, so on Friday, 00:24:10.92\00:24:12.89 what I want you to do is go out and get a double portion. 00:24:12.92\00:24:15.20 I rest on the Sabbath, 00:24:15.23\00:24:16.29 I want you to rest on the Sabbath. 00:24:16.32\00:24:18.73 So every Sabbath, a supernatural proof 00:24:18.76\00:24:22.06 this is the Seventh-day. 00:24:22.09\00:24:24.33 Now by the way, its, its--it's miraculous 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.52 because during the week, if on Wednesday saying 00:24:26.55\00:24:28.25 you know what I'm sleeping in on Thursday. 00:24:28.28\00:24:29.65 I'll go out today and get a double portion, 00:24:29.68\00:24:31.12 by Thursday morning that stuff is stinking rotten. 00:24:31.15\00:24:35.74 It will not keep, 00:24:35.77\00:24:37.32 only that double collection on Friday keeps. 00:24:37.35\00:24:41.07 Proof by the way, 00:24:41.10\00:24:42.15 to those who say at the Sabbath was given on Mount Sinai. 00:24:42.18\00:24:45.34 The Sabbath is the gift of the Jews 00:24:45.37\00:24:46.40 that came of the Ten Commandments. 00:24:46.43\00:24:47.48 So you kidding, this story is before the Ten Commandments. 00:24:47.51\00:24:49.28 The Sabbath goes all the way back to creation 00:24:49.31\00:24:53.53 and God supernaturally proved 00:24:53.56\00:24:55.09 which day by the Seventh-day miracle. 00:24:55.12\00:24:58.83 Yeah, well of course that doesn't make 00:24:58.86\00:24:59.93 the manna any more palatable. 00:24:59.96\00:25:01.72 If you've got that we got to have 00:25:01.75\00:25:02.78 that meat hungries in your heart and they got it. 00:25:02.81\00:25:07.71 So Moses says, 00:25:07.74\00:25:08.83 let me tell you about the manna by the way. 00:25:08.86\00:25:10.85 Let's pick it up again at verse 6, people weeping 00:25:10.88\00:25:13.50 "But our whole being is dried up; 00:25:13.53\00:25:16.26 there's nothing at all except his manna 00:25:16.29\00:25:17.71 before our eyes!" 00:25:17.74\00:25:18.80 Now verse 7, "Now the manna was like coriander seed, 00:25:18.83\00:25:20.96 and its color like the color of bdellium" 00:25:20.99\00:25:22.69 that would be white. 00:25:22.72\00:25:23.75 Verse 8, The people went about it gathered it," 00:25:23.78\00:25:26.48 just like south of the border. 00:25:26.51\00:25:27.70 "They gathered at they grounded on millstones 00:25:27.73\00:25:29.88 or they beat it in the mortar, 00:25:29.91\00:25:31.03 they cooked in a pans, and made cake of it, 00:25:31.06\00:25:32.97 and its tastes is like the taste the pastry 00:25:33.00\00:25:35.10 prepared with oil." 00:25:35.13\00:25:36.39 I'm thinking kind of like Krispy Kreme doughnuts. 00:25:36.42\00:25:38.61 I'm thinking that's probably the taste. 00:25:38.64\00:25:41.20 It says, it's like pastry, so it must have been good. 00:25:41.23\00:25:43.87 Verse-- but you know what, 00:25:43.90\00:25:44.93 you get tired of Krispy Kreme if you had it every day. 00:25:44.96\00:25:47.65 Verse 9 "And when the dew fell on the camp in the night, 00:25:47.68\00:25:51.55 the manna fell on it." 00:25:51.58\00:25:53.00 Now verse 10 watch this, 00:25:53.03\00:25:54.18 "Then Moses heard the people 00:25:54.21\00:25:56.16 weeping throughout their families, 00:25:56.19\00:25:59.06 everyone at the door of his tent..." 00:25:59.09\00:26:00.82 I've got to tell you about the Middle East. 00:26:00.85\00:26:01.88 You just watch the film out of Iraq, 00:26:01.91\00:26:03.83 when people mourn, 00:26:03.86\00:26:05.62 they never mourn in private, not in the Middle East, 00:26:05.65\00:26:07.57 you go out in the middle of the street 00:26:07.60\00:26:08.93 and then you beat your chest and you cry to the heavens. 00:26:08.96\00:26:13.93 They got it from way back then. 00:26:13.96\00:26:15.45 Everybody is in the door of their house 00:26:15.48\00:26:17.80 and they're all just wailing, and I'm telling you, 00:26:17.83\00:26:21.18 it is cutting Moses to the quick. 00:26:21.21\00:26:25.48 Apparently, it bothered God too, 00:26:25.51\00:26:26.57 it says the anger the Lord was greatly aroused 00:26:26.60\00:26:30.27 and Moses also was displeased. 00:26:30.30\00:26:33.67 You know what? 00:26:33.70\00:26:35.25 We're too hard on our leaders, way too hard on our leaders. 00:26:35.28\00:26:39.20 Do you think it is a picnic 00:26:39.23\00:26:41.37 to lead the lives of you and me? 00:26:41.40\00:26:44.43 Do you think, for a moment, don't you know? 00:26:44.46\00:26:47.43 You know what Moses does? 00:26:47.46\00:26:48.87 He said, I just can't take this 00:26:48.90\00:26:50.66 and he gets alone with God the next few verses. 00:26:50.69\00:26:52.76 He gets alone with God and he says, 00:26:52.79\00:26:53.86 now let me just run this by you again. 00:26:53.89\00:26:55.52 I'm supposed lead this people how long? 00:26:55.55\00:26:58.63 What have you called me to be? 00:26:58.66\00:26:59.71 He says it, have you called me to be a nurse maid. 00:26:59.74\00:27:02.06 What I have to do give them a little bottle 00:27:02.09\00:27:03.53 and burp them everyday. 00:27:03.56\00:27:05.19 Get them through this. 00:27:05.22\00:27:07.23 They're driving me crazy, God, I'm tired of leadership. 00:27:07.26\00:27:11.47 Trust me, our leaders get tired of leading. 00:27:11.50\00:27:15.60 So when you and I are given extra digs and jabs, 00:27:15.63\00:27:19.44 were only making it harder for the leader. 00:27:19.47\00:27:23.63 Next time you got an issue with the leader, 00:27:23.66\00:27:25.47 why don't you pray for her? 00:27:25.50\00:27:27.23 Why didn't you pray for him? 00:27:27.26\00:27:28.47 That's what you're supposed to do. 00:27:28.50\00:27:29.80 No way and get a little crowd weeping with you. 00:27:29.83\00:27:35.28 In fact, Moses is so-- 00:27:35.31\00:27:36.61 Moses is so heartbroken over this. 00:27:36.64\00:27:39.01 Look at verse 15, you know what Moses says guys, 00:27:39.04\00:27:40.87 he says, "God, hey God, tell me do you love me?" 00:27:40.90\00:27:42.79 God says, "Of course I love you." 00:27:42.82\00:27:44.00 And Moses says, "If you love me, kill me." 00:27:44.03\00:27:46.69 Look at that, it's right there in verse 15, "kill me." 00:27:46.72\00:27:49.71 Well, now that gone-- put me out of my misery. 00:27:49.74\00:27:53.88 It's tough sometimes to be a leader 00:27:53.91\00:27:58.48 and then God says, "Hey, the Lord God, 00:27:58.51\00:28:00.82 all right, children, Israel, all right. 00:28:00.85\00:28:03.66 I've heard you, you have an intense craving 00:28:03.69\00:28:05.65 an appetite for flesh food, 00:28:05.68\00:28:07.00 do you-- I'm gonna give you meat 00:28:07.03\00:28:08.77 until it comes out your nostrils." 00:28:08.80\00:28:12.52 And he does, verse 31 look at this, 00:28:12.55\00:28:14.32 can you believe it? 00:28:14.35\00:28:15.38 Verse 31, "Now a wind went out from the Lord, 00:28:15.41\00:28:18.65 and it brought quail from the sea 00:28:18.68\00:28:20.78 and left them fluttering near the camp, 00:28:20.81\00:28:22.79 about a day's journey on this side 00:28:22.82\00:28:24.46 and about a day's journey on the other side, 00:28:24.49\00:28:26.22 all around the camp, 00:28:26.25\00:28:27.61 and about two cubits above the surface of the ground." 00:28:27.64\00:28:30.62 I used to think of that quail stacked up to about two cubits. 00:28:30.65\00:28:33.79 One cubit, tip elbow to tip, 18 inches one cubit. 00:28:33.82\00:28:38.30 So two cubits would be about three feet, 00:28:38.33\00:28:40.19 about a yard, yard and half, they're not quite not sure. 00:28:40.22\00:28:43.03 I used to think that the quail piled up that high. 00:28:43.06\00:28:45.69 No, that's not what happened. 00:28:45.72\00:28:47.58 I was reading a scholar this last week, 00:28:47.61\00:28:48.68 you know what happened? 00:28:48.71\00:28:50.03 The quail came down and fluttered at three feet 00:28:50.06\00:28:53.14 above the ground. 00:28:53.17\00:28:54.38 Because of the-- 00:28:54.41\00:28:55.44 if the quail are fluttering at eight feet, 00:28:55.47\00:28:57.28 I'm out of luck 00:28:57.31\00:28:58.58 but when the birds are right here... 00:28:58.61\00:29:02.19 and that's exactly what they did. 00:29:02.22\00:29:04.00 They fluttered with arms reach. 00:29:04.03\00:29:06.62 Look at this, you can't believe this. 00:29:06.65\00:29:09.68 Verse 32 "And the people stayed up all that day, 00:29:09.71\00:29:14.07 and the people stayed up all that night, 00:29:14.10\00:29:16.99 and the people stayed up all the next day, 00:29:17.02\00:29:20.13 and they gathered the quail" 00:29:20.16\00:29:21.56 and hold on, now hold onto your seat 00:29:21.59\00:29:23.07 "He who gathered least gathered ten homers" 00:29:23.10\00:29:26.03 that's the-- this is the least, 00:29:26.06\00:29:27.83 that's the equivalent of 62 bushels of quail. 00:29:27.86\00:29:32.15 The guy that got the least, 00:29:32.18\00:29:33.64 had 62 of those apple bushels around this tent, 00:29:33.67\00:29:37.27 "And they spread them out for themselves 00:29:41.53\00:29:43.38 all around the camp." 00:29:43.41\00:29:44.44 They killed it they wanted meat to dry, 00:29:44.47\00:29:46.06 they're gonna cure and hey, baby, we got-- 00:29:46.09\00:29:47.99 we got meat to the Promise Land, hallelujah. 00:29:48.02\00:29:51.84 But watch this, verse 33, 00:29:51.87\00:29:53.19 "But while the meat was still between their teeth, 00:29:53.22\00:29:56.94 before it was chewed, 00:29:56.97\00:29:58.91 the wrath of the Lord was aroused against the people, 00:29:58.94\00:30:02.07 and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague." 00:30:02.10\00:30:04.96 You know, what God didn't have to do a thing. 00:30:04.99\00:30:07.74 If you are eating with a feverish pitch, 00:30:07.77\00:30:10.61 you will kill yourself cramming it into your mouth. 00:30:10.64\00:30:15.28 You'll kill yourself and what happened in verse 34, 00:30:15.31\00:30:20.44 "So Moses called the name 00:30:20.47\00:30:21.71 of that place Kibroth Hattaavah," 00:30:21.74\00:30:25.03 remember tavah avah, intense craving, 00:30:25.06\00:30:27.93 he named it the graves of craving. 00:30:27.96\00:30:31.49 The graves of craving, so here's the question. 00:30:31.52\00:30:33.91 So what is it that you crave for? 00:30:33.94\00:30:36.53 What is it that I crave for? 00:30:36.56\00:30:37.82 What do we crave for here at Andrews University. 00:30:37.85\00:30:39.64 What do we crave for in the Pioneer Memorial Church? 00:30:39.67\00:30:42.26 What is it? 00:30:42.29\00:30:43.74 The list could be endless, I suppose, 00:30:43.77\00:30:45.59 but may I mention one that turns out to be two. 00:30:45.62\00:30:50.22 I had a mother come up to me at camp meeting this summer. 00:30:50.25\00:30:53.67 She said, "Pastor have to talk with you." 00:30:53.70\00:30:55.73 So we got off the beaten path, 00:30:55.76\00:30:58.64 turns out the mother has a daughter 00:30:58.67\00:30:59.70 that is attending at-- 00:30:59.73\00:31:01.19 is a student at Andrews University. 00:31:01.22\00:31:04.56 And the daughter has confided in her mother 00:31:04.59\00:31:07.21 that she's worried for her friends, 00:31:07.24\00:31:09.25 who go off campus on weekends for drinking parties. 00:31:09.28\00:31:14.21 And the mother looked me straight in the eyes, 00:31:14.24\00:31:16.67 and she says, "Pastor, you're gonna have 00:31:16.70\00:31:18.48 to say something about this." 00:31:18.51\00:31:22.30 I came home from camp meeting 00:31:22.33\00:31:23.42 and then got out the surveys from this spring, 00:31:23.45\00:31:24.89 and began to look at the surveys 00:31:24.92\00:31:26.22 and you were saying the same thing, 00:31:26.25\00:31:27.72 so today, I'm saying something. 00:31:27.75\00:31:33.97 May I read a list of statistics to you? 00:31:34.00\00:31:38.67 These are compiled over 12 months 00:31:38.70\00:31:40.10 by the Alcohol Abuse 00:31:40.13\00:31:44.10 and Alcoholism Task Force on college drinking. 00:31:44.13\00:31:48.69 Adventist Review came out 00:31:48.72\00:31:49.80 with a special issue on addiction, 00:31:49.83\00:31:53.67 care of these statistics. 00:31:53.70\00:31:55.08 The following statistics for a year bring into focus 00:31:55.11\00:31:57.42 the consequences of college drinking. 00:31:57.45\00:31:59.08 All right, over 12 month period 00:31:59.11\00:32:00.82 in the United States of America here's what happens, 00:32:00.85\00:32:03.48 1,400 students aged 18 to 24 die. 00:32:03.51\00:32:09.17 Do you understand? Die. They don't get sick. 00:32:09.20\00:32:12.35 They die, 1,400 every year, 18 to 24. 00:32:12.38\00:32:15.90 500,000 students aged 18 to 24 are unintentionally injured, 00:32:15.93\00:32:21.22 half-a-million, 600,000 students aged 18 to 24 00:32:21.25\00:32:24.17 are assaulted by another student. 00:32:24.20\00:32:25.67 70,000 students in that same age bracket 00:32:25.70\00:32:27.97 are victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape. 00:32:28.00\00:32:32.05 And hold on to this, 400,000 students 00:32:32.08\00:32:33.71 in that same age bracket have unprotected sex 00:32:33.74\00:32:36.03 and more than, 100,000 of them are too intoxicated 00:32:36.06\00:32:39.24 to know whether they had consented or not. 00:32:39.27\00:32:44.49 25% percent of college students report 00:32:44.52\00:32:45.89 negative academic consequences from their drinking. 00:32:45.92\00:32:49.01 150,000 students develop 00:32:49.04\00:32:50.29 an alcohol related health problem 00:32:50.32\00:32:51.60 1.2 to 1.5 % of students indicates suicide attempts 00:32:51.63\00:32:55.66 within the past year 00:32:55.69\00:32:56.75 as a result of alcohol or drug use. 00:32:56.78\00:33:00.69 What's going on? 00:33:00.72\00:33:02.20 We got an epidemic in America 00:33:02.23\00:33:03.96 and it's happening on our campuses. 00:33:03.99\00:33:07.74 This is the whole nation. 00:33:07.77\00:33:12.01 I'll tell you what, based on empirical evidence alone, 00:33:12.04\00:33:14.35 you can understand why a university like ours 00:33:14.38\00:33:17.59 would forbid the use of alcohol, period. 00:33:17.62\00:33:22.11 We're not dealing with rocket science here. 00:33:22.14\00:33:24.26 Does it then get used around here, 00:33:30.29\00:33:32.03 since it's forbidden? 00:33:32.06\00:33:34.77 I've had several conversations with Dwayne McBride. 00:33:34.80\00:33:37.12 He's a sociologist and a researcher here 00:33:37.15\00:33:39.05 at Andrews University. 00:33:39.08\00:33:40.66 And Dwayne just told me about a 20 year study 00:33:40.69\00:33:42.81 that he and a team of researchers 00:33:42.84\00:33:44.12 have undertaken 20 years studying only Adventist 00:33:44.15\00:33:47.83 young adults attending Adventist colleges 00:33:47.86\00:33:50.34 and universities in the United States. 00:33:50.37\00:33:56.08 And they've discovered that our students 00:33:56.11\00:33:57.52 use alcohol and drugs at a rate two-third 00:33:57.55\00:34:00.58 less than the students in the general population. 00:34:00.61\00:34:03.91 Hallelujah. 00:34:03.94\00:34:07.15 Except obviously there's still concern for the one-third, 00:34:07.18\00:34:12.77 nobody needs me to stand in front of you today 00:34:12.80\00:34:14.76 and present a case 00:34:14.79\00:34:15.83 for the destructive effects of alcohol in the human brain. 00:34:15.86\00:34:18.31 The college statistics we just shared are evidence enough. 00:34:18.34\00:34:22.42 Please, however the biblical-- the biblical case 00:34:22.45\00:34:26.58 for the abstinence from alcohol, 00:34:26.61\00:34:29.14 while it is made textually 00:34:29.17\00:34:30.52 and I put a few verses there in your study guide 00:34:30.55\00:34:32.83 Proverbs, 20: 1, Proverbs 23: 29-35. 00:34:32.86\00:34:37.18 You've got a 1 Corinthians 10:31, 00:34:37.21\00:34:38.73 you can go to 1 Corinthian 16, 19 and 20, 00:34:38.76\00:34:40.94 "Your body is a temple of God, you cannot defile it." 00:34:40.97\00:34:42.99 I mean, we can make a case textually, 00:34:43.02\00:34:44.77 the Bible strongest case however, 00:34:44.80\00:34:46.57 listen, the Bible strongest case 00:34:46.60\00:34:48.26 is made anecdotally through stories. 00:34:48.29\00:34:52.10 I heard a story just two weeks ago, 00:34:52.13\00:34:53.16 in fact, it was our children story 00:34:53.19\00:34:54.24 in the First Church. 00:34:54.27\00:34:55.33 Two weeks ago, about a village in India 00:34:55.36\00:34:56.71 where elephants broke into the village distillery. 00:34:56.74\00:34:59.73 They didn't know what was in it, 00:34:59.76\00:35:00.99 they broke into the distillery 00:35:01.02\00:35:02.37 drank everything in the distillery 00:35:02.40\00:35:04.58 and then trashed the village. 00:35:04.61\00:35:09.63 The elephants had to be euthanized, 00:35:09.66\00:35:13.07 now nobody is recommending euthanasia 00:35:13.10\00:35:15.14 for those who consume alcohol in our midst. 00:35:15.17\00:35:19.42 However in the Bible narrative, euthanasia was once, 00:35:19.45\00:35:23.90 one time, it was a strategy. 00:35:23.93\00:35:25.96 I'm talking about the two preacher kids. 00:35:25.99\00:35:27.95 The two preacher boys, the sons of Aaron, 00:35:27.98\00:35:31.18 their names Nadab and Abihu 00:35:31.21\00:35:33.38 who in a drunken stupor stagger into the sanctuary 00:35:33.41\00:35:37.59 and the glory of God-- 00:35:37.62\00:35:40.83 as their bodies are being dragged 00:35:40.86\00:35:42.40 by their brothers to be buried. 00:35:42.43\00:35:46.06 God makes a point, take a look at this, 00:35:46.09\00:35:48.75 Leviticus chapter 10:9 "God says, 00:35:48.78\00:35:50.93 do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, 00:35:50.96\00:35:53.05 you, nor your sons with you, 00:35:53.08\00:35:54.73 when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. 00:35:54.76\00:35:57.61 It should be a statute forever throughout your generations 00:35:57.64\00:36:00.54 that you may distinguish between the Holy and the unholy 00:36:00.57\00:36:03.73 between the unclean and the clean." 00:36:03.76\00:36:08.58 Anecdotally, the Bible makes its case. 00:36:08.61\00:36:10.13 Do you ever heard of the story about Daniel and his four-- 00:36:10.16\00:36:12.55 his three university student peers Daniel 00:36:12.58\00:36:14.86 and there's-- 00:36:14.89\00:36:16.09 they discover they're gonna be served the wine of Babylon. 00:36:16.12\00:36:19.15 And so Daniel makes a choice everybody knows 00:36:19.18\00:36:21.36 Daniel chapter 1: 8 put it on the screen please, 00:36:21.39\00:36:23.70 "But Daniel purposed in his heart 00:36:23.73\00:36:25.64 that he would not defile himself 00:36:25.67\00:36:27.80 with a portion of the Kings delicacies" 00:36:27.83\00:36:30.96 and it also says, we left that line out, 00:36:30.99\00:36:32.59 but also says the wine 00:36:32.62\00:36:35.39 and "therefore he requested the chief of the eunuchs 00:36:35.42\00:36:37.78 that he might not defile himself." 00:36:37.81\00:36:42.59 Anecdotally, the Bible makes the case. 00:36:42.62\00:36:44.53 Let's take the death of our Lord Jesus, 00:36:44.56\00:36:46.34 who, as he's hanging on the cross. 00:36:46.37\00:36:47.92 They bring to him just as they're preparing, 00:36:47.95\00:36:49.70 maybe just before hoisting him, 00:36:49.73\00:36:51.46 they bring him sour wine mixed with gall you know, 00:36:51.49\00:36:53.76 what he says he tastes it. 00:36:53.79\00:36:55.02 Let's look at the record here Matthew 27, 00:36:55.05\00:36:56.97 "They gave him sour wine mingled with gall to drink 00:36:57.00\00:36:59.74 but when He had tasted it," 00:36:59.77\00:37:01.42 and realize what it was and new why they wanted him too 00:37:01.45\00:37:04.72 because alcohol will numb the mind. 00:37:04.75\00:37:07.32 That's a no brainer, he said I will not have that, 00:37:07.35\00:37:10.46 thank you and pushed it away with his jaw. 00:37:10.49\00:37:14.85 He would not drink it. 00:37:14.88\00:37:17.33 So we had anecdotal evidence as well as textual 00:37:17.36\00:37:19.98 but you know what, 00:37:20.01\00:37:21.05 I'm gonna take a different approach 00:37:21.08\00:37:23.23 and I'd like to come back to appetite for a moment. 00:37:23.26\00:37:25.66 You know what appetite is? 00:37:25.69\00:37:26.75 That very God given, 00:37:26.78\00:37:28.11 that very wonderful capacity we all have, 00:37:28.14\00:37:30.66 to hunger and thirst, to be able to savor tasty food, 00:37:30.69\00:37:33.70 to be able to relish delectable drink. 00:37:33.73\00:37:35.99 I mean, thank God for appetite. 00:37:36.02\00:37:38.82 I mean, can you imagine being a machine 00:37:38.85\00:37:40.39 just you'd be like a car-- 00:37:40.42\00:37:41.47 is just give me that gas, 00:37:41.50\00:37:42.54 I'll suck it up, no taste, no nothing. 00:37:42.57\00:37:45.96 God made us with appetite but God created the human race, 00:37:45.99\00:37:49.34 let me do the anatomy, 00:37:49.37\00:37:50.40 I'll step around from behind this pulpit. 00:37:50.43\00:37:52.87 God made the human race intentionally one way. 00:37:52.90\00:37:55.49 He said I want your reason, 00:37:55.52\00:37:56.93 by the way, point on your own body 00:37:56.96\00:37:59.54 to where reason is in your body. 00:37:59.57\00:38:01.56 Just point, you follow me, point to where reason is, 00:38:01.59\00:38:04.65 yeah, put your finger up here. 00:38:04.68\00:38:05.92 Come on, put your finger up here. 00:38:05.95\00:38:07.03 This is where reason takes place, 00:38:07.06\00:38:08.34 is that not right? 00:38:08.37\00:38:09.40 Am I making this up? 00:38:09.43\00:38:10.48 No, now point to where appetite takes place. 00:38:10.51\00:38:13.71 I know what happens to the nerve signals 00:38:13.74\00:38:15.86 but where does appetite involved? 00:38:15.89\00:38:17.83 Yeah, right-- right here, 00:38:17.86\00:38:19.51 God says, hey, I want to-- 00:38:19.54\00:38:20.61 I want you to see how I made you. 00:38:20.64\00:38:22.84 Reason is to be elevated above appetite, 00:38:22.87\00:38:27.10 you'll be just fine with reason up here 00:38:27.13\00:38:29.26 and appetite down here. 00:38:29.29\00:38:30.49 The devil comes along, 00:38:30.52\00:38:31.59 who is the enemy of God and it turns out, 00:38:31.62\00:38:33.29 he's the enemy the human race. 00:38:33.32\00:38:34.54 And he immediately sets out to reverse God's grace, 00:38:34.57\00:38:39.40 and you know what he does? 00:38:39.43\00:38:40.49 The devil makes fools of us 00:38:40.52\00:38:42.29 because he said I'm gonna make you walk on your hands. 00:38:42.32\00:38:43.92 I'm gonna make you walk on your hands 00:38:43.95\00:38:46.28 'cause I want your head down and I want your belly up. 00:38:46.31\00:38:49.50 I want the belly over the head. 00:38:49.53\00:38:52.31 I want a visceral to control the rational and the spiritual. 00:38:52.34\00:38:55.68 Would you jot that down, please? 00:38:55.71\00:38:57.15 In our creation, 00:38:57.18\00:38:58.29 God elevated reason over appetite, 00:38:58.32\00:39:00.30 but in our fall, Satan elevated appetite over reason. 00:39:00.33\00:39:05.43 He did it with Adam and Eve at the tree, didn't he? 00:39:05.46\00:39:07.23 He said, hey, good looking, come here. 00:39:07.26\00:39:09.05 Girl, come here, hey, you ought to taste this. 00:39:09.08\00:39:15.12 If in fact, if you taste this. 00:39:15.15\00:39:17.39 it'll give you a high so high, 00:39:17.42\00:39:19.61 you'll be higher than God himself, eat it. 00:39:19.64\00:39:23.21 Appetite elevated over reason, did at-- 00:39:23.24\00:39:27.52 did it right at the beginning. 00:39:27.55\00:39:29.12 He did it with Esop, remembers the story of Esop? 00:39:29.15\00:39:31.51 He's been hunting all day, and he's coming in and oh, 00:39:31.54\00:39:33.77 man, is he famished and he gets 00:39:33.80\00:39:35.28 a whiff of his twin brother Jacobs lentil stew. 00:39:35.31\00:39:39.40 How you could get mouth watering over that, 00:39:39.43\00:39:41.98 I have no idea but he smells that lentil stew. 00:39:42.01\00:39:45.40 And he says, ah, and then Satan whispers to him, 00:39:45.43\00:39:49.07 hey Esop, let me just a something, 00:39:49.10\00:39:50.89 boy, you are hungry. 00:39:50.92\00:39:53.08 Oh, Esop, I want to tell you something, 00:39:53.11\00:39:54.42 you are so hungry. 00:39:54.45\00:39:55.58 I predict you will die if you don't get that. 00:39:55.61\00:39:58.03 So while Satan's doing that number, 00:39:58.06\00:39:59.55 getting appetite over reason, he's over here, 00:39:59.58\00:40:01.68 Jacob is saying hey, by the way boy, 00:40:01.71\00:40:02.75 this is your big chance, 00:40:02.78\00:40:03.81 why don't you make a deal make a deal with your brother. 00:40:03.84\00:40:05.43 Tell him you'll give him the stew 00:40:05.46\00:40:07.51 if he'll give you the birthright, boom! 00:40:07.54\00:40:08.89 And so Satan comes-- 00:40:08.92\00:40:10.24 Esop who should have been the Prince, 00:40:10.27\00:40:12.74 the leader of that tribe. 00:40:12.77\00:40:14.41 Oh, come on, this silly little birthright stuff, 00:40:14.44\00:40:16.85 you don't believe Gods promises do you? 00:40:16.88\00:40:18.59 You're hungry boy. 00:40:18.62\00:40:19.65 You're hungry, eat, appetite over reason. 00:40:19.68\00:40:23.44 Nadab and Abihu, appetite over reason, 00:40:23.47\00:40:26.83 Satan attempted that with Daniel, 00:40:26.86\00:40:28.26 appetite over reason, he lost. 00:40:28.29\00:40:30.10 Satan comes to Almighty God in human form 00:40:30.13\00:40:32.99 in the wilderness and makes the same play, 00:40:33.02\00:40:35.76 appetite over reason. 00:40:35.79\00:40:37.72 Come on, hey, who are you? 00:40:37.75\00:40:40.84 Look like you haven't eaten 40 days and 40 nights. 00:40:40.87\00:40:44.10 Pitiful and suppose you think you are who they-- 00:40:44.13\00:40:47.85 who you've been saying you are, son of God. 00:40:47.88\00:40:49.90 Yeah, right, give me another one, 00:40:49.93\00:40:51.59 I tell you what, I'm from heaven, 00:40:51.62\00:40:53.03 if you're really the son of God, see those-- 00:40:53.06\00:40:55.23 I bet you're hungry. 00:40:55.26\00:40:56.29 See those stones, 00:40:56.32\00:40:57.36 you turned one of them into baked bread 00:40:57.39\00:40:59.29 and I will believe you, sir, that you are who you are. 00:40:59.32\00:41:02.50 Appetite elevated over reason but Jesus sniffed a snake, 00:41:02.53\00:41:08.74 smelled the old serpent and you know what Jesus does, 00:41:08.77\00:41:11.77 this is incredible. 00:41:11.80\00:41:12.89 He goes to our theme book for this series 00:41:12.92\00:41:15.95 Deuteronomy and by memory, 00:41:15.98\00:41:18.35 he quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 our last text to look up. 00:41:18.38\00:41:21.31 I need you to see it in your Bible please, 00:41:21.34\00:41:23.34 Deuteronomy your numbers just go the next book 00:41:23.37\00:41:26.19 over Deuteronomy chapter 8, amazing. 00:41:26.22\00:41:30.88 He takes our theme book and quotes from it, 00:41:30.91\00:41:35.31 Deuteronomy chapter 8:3, 00:41:35.34\00:41:38.89 Moses's farewell address 00:41:38.92\00:41:40.39 he'll be dead at the end to this address, 00:41:40.42\00:41:42.70 he'll climb Mount Nebo leader fail, leaders failed. 00:41:42.73\00:41:46.48 It's a high price leaders pay, tough job but also high price. 00:41:46.51\00:41:54.19 So Moses talking to these grown up children 00:41:54.22\00:41:56.17 whose parents are now buried in the wilderness. 00:41:56.20\00:41:57.81 "So God humbled you, and he allowed you to hunger," 00:41:57.84\00:42:03.11 would you hit the pause button right there. 00:42:03.14\00:42:05.30 I want to suggest that there are times 00:42:05.33\00:42:07.31 when God lets you and me hunger in order to reveal to us 00:42:07.34\00:42:11.58 the ferocious power of appetite. 00:42:11.61\00:42:16.17 I was flying to another camp meeting, 00:42:16.20\00:42:18.13 it's over in New Jersey. 00:46:44.49\00:46:45.53 "Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, 00:46:45.56\00:46:49.98 and whose glory is in their shame-- 00:46:50.01\00:46:51.95 who set their minds on earthly things." 00:46:51.98\00:46:56.46 The tragedy is that even for the chosen, 00:46:56.49\00:46:59.98 the belly can become the God, 00:47:00.01\00:47:02.84 not just for drink but also for food. 00:47:02.87\00:47:08.31 That's why this sermon on alcohol 00:47:08.34\00:47:09.50 is really a teaching on appetite. 00:47:09.53\00:47:11.37 Yeah, but come on, pastor, give me a break, 00:47:11.40\00:47:13.26 alcohol is a lot worse. 00:47:13.29\00:47:14.59 Oh, really?
