00:07:44.65\00:07:47.59 A 167 years after October 22, 1844 right now 00:07:47.62\00:07:54.91 167 years to the second here we are. 00:07:54.94\00:08:00.37 Perhaps it's no coincidence it all 00:08:00.40\00:08:03.37 that we come in the fourth gospel, 00:08:03.40\00:08:06.69 we come to a series of Jesus 00:08:06.72\00:08:08.21 most penetrating statements about the judgment 00:08:08.24\00:08:11.01 and we happen to come to them on this October 22. 00:08:11.04\00:08:15.63 I want to examine those statements that be-- 00:08:15.66\00:08:18.55 did our prefaced by a stunning miracle. 00:08:18.58\00:08:20.87 Open your Bible the fourth gospel, 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.50 the Gospel of John fly through one miracle 00:08:23.53\00:08:29.08 and then two stunning statements. 00:08:29.11\00:08:31.23 John Chapter 4, you didn't bring a Bible, 00:08:31.26\00:08:33.57 you need to track this miracle. 00:08:33.60\00:08:35.23 If it were just the miracle 00:08:35.26\00:08:36.72 it would be worth it all just for this narrative, 00:08:36.75\00:08:39.26 John chapter 5. 00:08:39.29\00:08:41.33 Grab the pew Bible in front of you 00:08:41.36\00:08:42.75 if you didn't bring a Bible. 00:08:42.78\00:08:44.30 It's page 717 in that pew Bible. 00:08:44.33\00:08:50.17 Unforgettable miracle here in John 5, 00:08:50.20\00:08:52.64 but it's followed by two stunning statement 00:08:52.67\00:08:54.56 about the judgments and those statements 00:08:54.59\00:08:56.28 that I want to get to as fast as we can. 00:08:56.31\00:08:58.36 So let's go, John 5:1 New King James Version. 00:08:58.39\00:09:01.95 "After this" I put the words on a screen for you. 00:09:01.98\00:09:04.00 "After this there was a feast of the Jews, 00:09:04.03\00:09:06.29 and Jesus went up to Jerusalem." 00:09:06.32\00:09:08.47 That's code language in John. 00:09:08.50\00:09:09.67 John will repeat that phrase, you know why? 00:09:09.70\00:09:11.75 Because only John tells us 00:09:11.78\00:09:13.09 that Jesus repeatedly went up to Jerusalem. 00:09:13.12\00:09:15.99 All the other gospels these synoptic Gospels all say 00:09:16.02\00:09:19.64 at the end He went up once. 00:09:19.67\00:09:21.85 John says no again and again He went up to Jerusalem, why? 00:09:21.88\00:09:25.04 Because Jerusalem is where Calvary will climax. 00:09:25.07\00:09:30.70 So we already have Calgary hinted at in this story. 00:09:30.73\00:09:34.15 Calvary embedded in every narrative in the Gospel of John. 00:09:34.18\00:09:37.76 "After this there was a feast to the Jews, 00:09:37.79\00:09:39.29 and Jesus went up to Jerusalem." 00:09:39.32\00:09:40.70 Verse 2 "Now there is in Jerusalem, 00:09:40.73\00:09:42.66 by the Sheep Gate a pool 00:09:42.69\00:09:44.64 which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda," 00:09:44.67\00:09:47.27 some suggest it means house of mercy. 00:09:47.30\00:09:49.57 "And it had five porches or porticos." 00:09:49.60\00:09:55.01 I've stood-- I've actually stood 00:09:55.04\00:09:56.42 on the ledge in Jerusalem and its way down 00:09:56.45\00:09:59.90 because the layers over the centuries 00:09:59.93\00:10:01.67 have accumulated as they've torn down 00:10:01.70\00:10:03.69 and rebuilt, torn down and rebuilt. 00:10:03.72\00:10:05.35 There are actually two pools for the pool of Bethesda, 00:10:05.38\00:10:08.92 the length of a football field. 00:10:08.95\00:10:10.59 So we're not talking about a little wading pools here, 00:10:10.62\00:10:12.60 a massive two pools 20 feet deep, 5 porticos, 00:10:12.63\00:10:17.31 which means that their porches on all four sides 00:10:17.34\00:10:20.33 and then a portico or porch in the middle 00:10:20.36\00:10:23.04 and archaeologist are assuming 00:10:23.07\00:10:24.46 that meant the separation of genders two pools for each. 00:10:24.49\00:10:28.41 "Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool" 00:10:33.10\00:10:35.75 verse 2 "which is called in Hebrew, 00:10:35.78\00:10:37.28 Bethesda, having five porches. 00:10:37.31\00:10:39.28 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind." 00:10:39.31\00:10:47.28 The ancients believe to heal a blind man 00:10:47.31\00:10:51.09 is the pinnacle of divine intervention. 00:10:51.12\00:10:54.73 "Lame," they felt the same about the lame. 00:10:54.76\00:10:56.49 Those two-- those two physical impairments 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.61 were considered the unachievable in terms of healing. 00:10:59.64\00:11:04.15 "The blind, the lame, the paralyzed 00:11:04.18\00:11:06.83 waiting for the moving of the water," 00:11:06.86\00:11:10.75 Somehow I got started 00:11:10.78\00:11:12.03 in the Folklore of that holy city 00:11:12.06\00:11:15.55 that on certain occasions unpredictable, 00:11:15.58\00:11:19.82 there would come a supercharging of the waters as it were. 00:11:19.85\00:11:24.93 And if you stepped into those waters you'd be healed. 00:11:24.96\00:11:27.07 In fact, the Folklore was the first person into the water 00:11:27.10\00:11:33.50 when an angel that was the belief an angel reached out 00:11:33.53\00:11:35.97 and with his solicitor hand he just stirred the rippling. 00:11:36.00\00:11:39.29 The first person and is healed. 00:11:39.32\00:11:40.61 It doesn't take a whole lot of pondering 00:11:44.82\00:11:47.95 to realize that with that premise 00:11:47.98\00:11:50.61 you can understand it would always be those 00:11:50.64\00:11:53.73 with the brew physical strength. 00:11:53.76\00:11:57.18 Usually the least of the sick, least sick 00:11:57.21\00:12:00.93 who would be in the water first, 00:12:00.96\00:12:02.57 because if you're emaciated physically, medically 00:12:02.60\00:12:05.52 there is no way you can drag your frame 00:12:05.55\00:12:10.18 those skin and bones to that water, 00:12:10.21\00:12:13.02 unless of course you had a family 00:12:13.05\00:12:15.05 who can rejuvenate, some friends 00:12:15.08\00:12:16.65 who would hurry you to the water's edge. 00:12:16.68\00:12:20.60 Verse 5, so there they lie by the hundreds packed 00:12:20.63\00:12:25.65 around those two pools. 00:12:25.68\00:12:27.14 "Now a certain man was there 00:12:27.17\00:12:29.41 who had an infirmity thirty-eight years." 00:12:29.44\00:12:33.19 I feel like life is ended if I have a cold for three days. 00:12:33.22\00:12:36.85 I am miserable to everybody around me. 00:12:36.88\00:12:40.38 But some of you know, 00:12:40.41\00:12:42.85 someone you know the meaning of chronic suffering, 00:12:42.88\00:12:46.50 pain that never goes away, it just is with you, 00:12:46.53\00:12:49.45 some of you know, 38 years skin and bones. 00:12:49.48\00:12:54.46 That's where he is lying right there too far. 00:12:54.49\00:13:00.84 "Now a certain man" verse 5 "was there 00:13:00.87\00:13:04.14 who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 00:13:04.17\00:13:06.02 And when Jesus saw him lying their" Desire of Ages 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.71 says by the way that when Jesus stepped 00:13:08.74\00:13:10.21 into that pool of Bethesda two pools, really 00:13:10.24\00:13:13.93 He inquired who's been here the longest. 00:13:13.96\00:13:16.15 Who is here the longest? 00:13:16.18\00:13:18.27 Jesus purposely picked out. 00:13:18.30\00:13:20.96 The Desire of Ages says 00:13:20.99\00:13:22.02 is the worst case, just hopeless. 00:13:22.05\00:13:26.51 "And when Jesus saw him lying there, 00:13:26.54\00:13:28.30 and knew" see, " and knew" he checked it out. 00:13:28.33\00:13:31.90 "And knew that the man had already been 00:13:31.93\00:13:33.75 in that condition for a long time, 00:13:33.78\00:13:35.76 He said to him, 'Do you what to be made well?'" 00:13:35.79\00:13:40.74 What happened if Jesus stood in front of you me today 00:13:40.77\00:13:43.60 and He looked into our faces 00:13:43.63\00:13:45.69 and He asked that question? 00:13:45.72\00:13:46.75 Very privately of course to you, 00:13:46.78\00:13:48.38 so that nobody else would hear it, but you. 00:13:48.41\00:13:50.31 If He looked into your face 00:13:50.34\00:13:51.75 and He said, a girl, a boy, 00:13:51.78\00:13:53.56 do you want to be made well? 00:13:53.59\00:13:56.39 If Jesus stood in front of me today 00:13:56.42\00:13:57.85 and He said, Dwight, I can heal you. 00:13:57.88\00:13:59.73 I can heal you right now. 00:13:59.76\00:14:01.49 Nobody else knows what you're crippled over. 00:14:01.52\00:14:04.75 I know, I can heal you right now. 00:14:04.78\00:14:08.15 What would I ask Him to do? 00:14:08.18\00:14:10.39 If He asked me do you want to be made well? 00:14:10.42\00:14:12.58 Yes, please. 00:14:12.61\00:14:18.15 Jesus leans over this emaciated protruding cheek boned, 00:14:18.18\00:14:25.01 sunken eyed countenance. 00:14:25.04\00:14:28.94 When He leans over He blocks the noonday sun 00:14:28.97\00:14:31.30 and that's why the bloodshot eyes open 00:14:31.33\00:14:33.31 and they can see a stranger 00:14:33.34\00:14:35.64 staring down at him back lighted 00:14:35.67\00:14:37.32 by the glory of the afternoon. 00:14:37.35\00:14:41.36 Do you want to be made well? 00:14:41.39\00:14:43.32 "The sick man answered Him," verse 7. 00:14:43.35\00:14:45.01 "Sir, I have no man." 00:14:45.04\00:14:49.11 I tell you what, there's a whole sermon, 00:14:49.14\00:14:51.51 someday somebody's got to preacher it 00:14:51.54\00:14:52.99 I have no one, I have no one. 00:14:53.02\00:14:56.69 I have nobody in his dormitory. 00:14:56.72\00:14:59.51 I have nobody on this campus. 00:14:59.54\00:15:02.30 I have nobody in this community, 00:15:02.33\00:15:03.94 I have no man, I have no woman, 00:15:03.97\00:15:05.88 I have nobody who cares for me. 00:15:05.91\00:15:08.90 Once in a while I get an email from my worshipper 00:15:08.93\00:15:10.76 who has worshipped here for months 00:15:10.79\00:15:14.41 and I tell you what, it just makes my heart weep 00:15:14.44\00:15:16.86 as that person describes 00:15:16.89\00:15:18.48 coming here Sabbath after Sabbath 00:15:18.51\00:15:20.55 and there's nobody, 00:15:20.58\00:15:22.97 nobody that shows an interest in her, 00:15:23.00\00:15:24.99 nobody that notices he's even sitting in that pew. 00:15:25.02\00:15:30.22 But I love that, I love that 00:15:30.25\00:15:32.44 there's Johnny Bell testimony a moment ago 00:15:32.47\00:15:35.19 and I'm talking to the family here 00:15:35.22\00:15:37.27 at the Pioneer Memorial Church. 00:15:37.30\00:15:38.80 Come on, go to that website volunteer 00:15:38.83\00:15:41.45 to become a family away from family, 00:15:41.48\00:15:44.72 a home away from home. 00:15:44.75\00:15:46.57 We just had our five over last Sabbath, 00:15:46.60\00:15:48.77 had a glorious Sabbath together. 00:15:48.80\00:15:51.71 Come on, that's what is about. 00:15:51.74\00:15:53.38 We don't want anybody leaving Andrews University 00:15:53.41\00:15:55.18 and saying, you know what, I had nobody. 00:15:55.21\00:15:57.06 The whole four years and nobody cared about me. 00:15:57.09\00:16:00.31 That heartache "I have no man to put me in a pool 00:16:05.05\00:16:09.24 when the water is stirred up, 00:16:09.27\00:16:10.30 but while I am coming, another step down before me." 00:16:10.33\00:16:12.51 The stronger obviously are the ones who get healed. 00:16:12.54\00:16:15.02 "Jesus said to him," 00:16:15.05\00:16:16.28 there must have been something in that voice. 00:16:16.31\00:16:17.97 There must have been something 00:16:18.00\00:16:19.03 even in that back lighted face 00:16:19.06\00:16:21.36 that mirrors compassion in hope 00:16:21.39\00:16:23.58 Jesus says to that man is He stoops over him. 00:16:23.61\00:16:26.93 I'm telling you 00:16:26.96\00:16:29.42 "Rise, take up your bed and walk." 00:16:29.45\00:16:34.91 Something in the heart of that 38 years sick man leaps. 00:16:34.94\00:16:41.60 He doesn't know who is speaking to him 00:16:41.63\00:16:44.16 but there's an ounce of faith just a mustard seed 00:16:44.19\00:16:47.03 and he jumps to his feet. 00:16:47.06\00:16:49.61 Halleluiah. 00:16:49.64\00:16:51.69 He jumps to his feet. 00:16:51.72\00:16:53.58 "And immediately the man was made well, 00:16:53.61\00:16:56.89 and took up his bed, and walked." 00:16:56.92\00:17:00.21 Praise God. 00:17:00.24\00:17:01.46 And John inserts the word immediately 00:17:01.49\00:17:04.16 because he wants high contrast 00:17:04.19\00:17:05.88 between 38 years and immediately. 00:17:05.91\00:17:08.81 For the last four chapters 00:17:08.84\00:17:10.41 John has been talking water, water,water 00:17:10.44\00:17:12.79 and chapter 2 00:17:12.82\00:17:14.36 the water pots of purification in the wedding of Cana, 00:17:14.39\00:17:17.49 in chapter 3 unless you're born of water 00:17:17.52\00:17:19.44 and chapter 4 the well of Jacob's well in Samaria. 00:17:19.47\00:17:23.75 And now in chapter 5, water again, 00:17:23.78\00:17:26.35 because there was great ritual significance 00:17:26.38\00:17:28.59 attached to the meaning of water 00:17:28.62\00:17:30.10 and John is saying I want to tell you something 00:17:30.13\00:17:32.32 all the water in the world can't save you, 00:17:32.35\00:17:35.05 Jesus saves, Jesus saves. 00:17:35.08\00:17:38.48 Boom he seals it by John 5. 00:17:38.51\00:17:44.42 We've heard a joyful sound 00:17:44.45\00:17:47.67 Jesus saves, Jesus saves, 00:17:47.70\00:17:50.52 spread the glad news all around. 00:17:50.55\00:17:54.77 Jesus saves, that's the point of this miracle. 00:17:54.80\00:17:59.08 Salvation is in Christ. 00:17:59.11\00:18:03.90 Oh, we left off a sentence, 00:18:03.93\00:18:06.56 we left off a sentence in verse 19, didn't we?
