00:01:27.81\00:01:34.04 I'll never know how much it cost 00:01:34.07\00:01:40.14 To see my sin 00:01:40.17\00:01:43.40 Upon that cross 00:01:43.43\00:01:48.98 Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down 00:01:49.01\00:01:55.61 Here I am to say that You're my God 00:01:55.64\00:02:02.07 You're all together lovely, all together worthy 00:02:02.10\00:02:09.38 All together 00:02:09.41\00:02:11.06 00:02:32.77\00:02:39.14 At the feet of Jesus 00:02:39.17\00:02:45.16 We cry holy, holy, holy 00:02:45.19\00:02:52.12 We cry holy, holy, holy 00:02:52.15\00:02:58.85 We cry holy, holy 00:04:20.81\00:04:25.44 Holy is the Lamb 00:04:25.47\00:04:31.74 I have no wit 00:04:36.37\00:04:38.68 No words, no tears 00:04:38.71\00:04:46.42 My heart within me 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.68 Like a stone is numb'd 00:04:49.71\00:04:55.02 Too much for hopes or fears 00:04:55.05\00:05:00.03 Look right, look left, 00:05:00.06\00:05:05.24 I dwell alone 00:05:05.27\00:05:11.10 I lift mine eyes, but dimm'd with grief 00:05:11.13\00:05:17.82 No everlasting hills 00:05:17.85\00:05:22.39 I see 00:05:22.42\00:05:26.42 My life is in the falling leaf 00:05:32.58\00:05:39.23 O, Jesus, 00:05:43.41\00:05:45.61 Quicken me 00:05:45.64\00:05:52.98 My life is like a faded leaf 00:05:53.01\00:06:00.87 My harvest dwindled to a husk 00:06:00.90\00:06:06.84 Truly my life is void and brief 00:06:06.87\00:06:13.44 And tedious 00:06:13.47\00:06:16.02 In barren dusk 00:06:16.05\00:06:22.90 My life is like a frozen thing 00:06:22.93\00:06:29.49 No bud nor greenness 00:06:29.52\00:06:32.74 Can I see 00:06:32.77\00:06:37.18 Yet, it shall rise, the sap of spring 00:06:43.00\00:06:50.66 O, Jesus, rise in me 00:06:50.69\00:06:57.00 O, Jesus, rise in me 00:07:05.65\00:07:13.15 My life is like 00:07:19.38\00:07:22.13 A broken bowl 00:07:22.16\00:07:27.94 A broken bowl that cannot hold 00:07:27.97\00:07:33.52 One drop of water for my soul 00:07:33.55\00:07:39.35 Or cordial 00:07:39.38\00:07:41.43 In the searching 00:07:41.46\00:07:44.80 Cold 00:07:44.83\00:07:49.48 Cast in the fire the perish'd thing 00:07:49.51\00:07:56.39 Melt and remold it 00:07:56.42\00:08:00.00 For my King 00:08:00.03\00:08:07.62 O, Jesus, drink of me 00:08:07.65\00:08:15.30 O, Jesus, 00:08:15.33\00:08:17.82 Drink of me 00:08:17.85\00:08:21.27 O, Jesus, 00:08:27.10\00:08:29.62 Drink of me 00:08:29.65\00:08:35.95 Let's pray together. 00:09:17.32\00:09:21.15 Oh, Jesus, quicken me, 00:09:21.18\00:09:28.74 drink from me, rise in me. 00:09:28.77\00:09:33.58 Oh, Jesus, quicken us, drink from us, rise in us. 00:09:33.61\00:09:41.54 It's time, it is high time, 00:09:41.57\00:09:45.13 dear Christ, we pray, amen. 00:09:45.16\00:09:49.90 There is no sadder funeral to conduct, 00:09:53.54\00:09:56.63 you can trust me on this one, 00:09:56.66\00:10:02.10 than the funeral for a child, particularly an only child. 00:10:02.13\00:10:09.27 The young man is hardly a boy, grown-up and he's dead. 00:10:12.99\00:10:18.54 Cause of death, cardiac arrest. 00:10:18.57\00:10:23.09 Was it the result of a tragic accident? 00:10:27.26\00:10:31.33 We don't know. 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.40 Was it the terminus of a dreadful illness? 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.96 We don't know. 00:10:35.99\00:10:39.33 All we know is that like far too many funeral processions 00:10:39.36\00:10:45.79 in this little village wending 00:10:45.82\00:10:48.53 our way to Rose Hill Cemetery, 00:10:48.56\00:10:54.12 it happened in his hometown as well. 00:10:54.15\00:10:58.23 The funeral cortege in that little village is gathered. 00:10:58.26\00:11:05.28 The mournful procession begins. 00:11:05.31\00:11:10.43 They have hoisted high above their heads, 00:11:10.46\00:11:14.92 the body of the deceased in an open coffin. 00:11:14.95\00:11:19.88 And the grieving crowd 00:11:19.91\00:11:24.61 trails its tear strewn way behind. 00:11:24.64\00:11:30.46 Truth be known, the tears, 00:11:30.49\00:11:34.03 their tears are not for the young man, 00:11:34.06\00:11:37.61 because when you're dead and gone, you're dead and gone. 00:11:37.64\00:11:42.72 Beyond the veil of pain and misery, 00:11:42.75\00:11:46.90 beyond the consciousness of ascension life, 00:11:46.93\00:11:49.31 you are utterly asleep 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.63 in the embrace of non-existence. 00:11:51.66\00:11:55.85 Existing now only in the memories of those 00:11:55.88\00:11:59.46 who loved you 00:11:59.49\00:12:01.80 and in the memory of the God who gave you to them. 00:12:01.83\00:12:06.15 So their tears and their pain are more 00:12:06.18\00:12:08.31 for the young man's survivor than for him. 00:12:08.34\00:12:12.19 Perhaps, this story ought to be entitled 00:12:12.22\00:12:14.37 "A tale of two crowds," because as fate would have it, 00:12:14.40\00:12:21.07 as that funeral procession is spilling out of the village 00:12:21.10\00:12:23.71 toward the nearby hillside cemetery, 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.34 another crowd comes boisterously 00:12:26.37\00:12:28.74 up the wending hillside road. 00:12:28.77\00:12:32.65 The sounds of jubilant laughter, 00:12:32.68\00:12:36.35 the excitement and joy, 00:12:36.38\00:12:40.57 it's as if they have in the center of that crowd 00:12:40.60\00:12:44.89 a celebrity unlike any rockstar they have known. 00:12:44.92\00:12:49.54 Everybody pushing as hard as they can 00:12:49.57\00:12:51.71 to the center of that moving mass, 00:12:51.74\00:12:53.85 holding up their iPhone, snapping just a picture of him 00:12:53.88\00:12:59.76 as the crowd flows up that road. 00:12:59.79\00:13:04.52 The jubilant crowd runs headlong 00:13:04.55\00:13:06.32 into the funeral cortege 00:13:06.35\00:13:09.92 and the contrast could not be more embarrassing and stark. 00:13:09.95\00:13:16.23 One crowd embarrassed for their unbridled joy 00:13:16.26\00:13:19.46 and such-- in the presence of such obvious grief, 00:13:19.49\00:13:22.24 the other crowd annoyed that anyone could possibly find 00:13:22.27\00:13:26.04 reason for laughter on a day of such broken-heartedness. 00:13:26.07\00:13:29.67 Silence settles over both crowds. 00:13:29.70\00:13:33.68 Nobody speaks. 00:13:33.71\00:13:36.97 The silence broken only by the muffled sobs 00:13:37.00\00:13:42.38 of the young man's mother. 00:13:42.41\00:13:44.14 No consoling arm around her shoulders, 00:13:44.17\00:13:47.72 not from her husband, 00:13:47.75\00:13:49.41 for he has preceded his son in death. 00:13:49.44\00:13:54.27 She's a widow. 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.43 And the boy was her only child. 00:13:56.46\00:14:00.51 Both crowds fall silent, say for the sobbing mother. 00:14:00.54\00:14:06.57 And then it was, maybe we ought to say and then it is, 00:14:06.60\00:14:11.01 the man who was the hero of the boisterous crowd 00:14:11.04\00:14:13.46 pushes His way through His people 00:14:13.49\00:14:17.31 until He at last is standing by the slumped shoulders 00:14:17.34\00:14:24.43 of the grieving mother. 00:14:24.46\00:14:26.78 It was William Blake, who once wrote, 00:14:26.81\00:14:29.56 "Till our grief is fled and gone, 00:14:29.59\00:14:32.24 He doth sit by us and moan." 00:14:32.27\00:14:37.61 There is a touch of that moaning compassion 00:14:37.64\00:14:41.23 in the voice of the stranger 00:14:41.26\00:14:45.64 and He speaks, "Do not weep." 00:14:45.67\00:14:50.90 Her face bowed beneath her black veil slowly raises, 00:14:54.34\00:14:57.71 eyes bloodshot with tears 00:14:57.74\00:15:00.26 search the features of this man. 00:15:00.29\00:15:05.64 Repeats Himself, "Do not weep." 00:15:05.67\00:15:11.96 And what happened next, though it happened so quickly, 00:15:11.99\00:15:15.28 none was able to sufficiently observe the details. 00:15:15.31\00:15:17.34 What happened next would become forever enshrined 00:15:17.37\00:15:21.46 in the chronicles of that little mountain village. 00:15:21.49\00:15:25.45 As the stranger pivoted on His heel, 00:15:25.48\00:15:29.03 stepping away from the sobbing mother, 00:15:29.06\00:15:32.31 two strides 00:15:32.34\00:15:34.70 and He stands beside the uplifted open coffin, 00:15:34.73\00:15:39.56 He puts his hand on that coffin 00:15:39.59\00:15:43.88 and then He speaks 00:15:43.91\00:15:46.14 as if the blue-tinged corpse can hear His voice. 00:15:46.17\00:15:52.81 "Young man, I say to you, arise." 00:15:52.84\00:15:59.86 And then that corpse sat up in his coffin 00:16:06.24\00:16:14.22 and he spoke. 00:16:14.25\00:16:15.75 Nobody remembered to capture the words, 00:16:15.78\00:16:20.22 but I've been a pastor just long enough on a campus 00:16:20.25\00:16:22.45 filled with young men and for me 00:16:22.48\00:16:23.92 it isn't hard to imagine his first words. 00:16:23.95\00:16:26.19 "Yo, what's up with this?" 00:16:26.22\00:16:32.84 But he answers his own question. 00:16:32.87\00:16:35.55 For in that moment he looks down and unraveling, 00:16:35.58\00:16:38.74 loosening around him is that burial shroud 00:16:38.77\00:16:44.56 and the moment he sees a burial shroud, he knows, 00:16:44.59\00:16:47.79 because the last time he saw one like that 00:16:47.82\00:16:50.32 his father was wearing it as they buried him. 00:16:50.35\00:16:56.22 And he instantly realizes, 00:16:56.25\00:16:58.94 he's been dead and they were about to bury him. 00:16:58.97\00:17:04.11 The hero of the boisterous crowd, 00:17:04.14\00:17:05.82 who now is the hero of both crowds, 00:17:05.85\00:17:07.83 reaches down into that open casket 00:17:07.86\00:17:10.68 and hoists the young man up 00:17:10.71\00:17:14.36 into the outstretched arms of his nearly fainting mother. 00:17:14.39\00:17:20.61 What a story. The celebrity is in the midst. 00:20:32.89\00:20:36.53 "And when He came near the gate of that little city, behold, 00:20:36.56\00:20:40.29 a dead man was being carried out, 00:20:40.32\00:20:42.54 the only son of his mother, and she was a widow 00:20:42.57\00:20:46.09 and a large crowd from the city was with her." 00:20:46.12\00:20:50.81 A tale of two crowds, here it is, verse 13, 00:20:50.84\00:20:54.09 "And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her 00:20:54.12\00:20:56.36 and He said to her, 'Do not weep.' 00:20:56.39\00:20:59.95 " Imagine, do not weep. 00:20:59.98\00:21:04.04 Then in verse 14, "He came 00:21:04.07\00:21:05.25 and He touched the open coffin." 00:21:05.28\00:21:07.40 Contrary to Levitical law that says you are unclean 00:21:07.43\00:21:09.85 the moment you touch what a dead person is lying on. 00:21:09.88\00:21:12.39 To the Lord of life there are no strictures 00:21:12.42\00:21:14.54 that prevent Him from stepping into death. 00:21:14.57\00:21:16.84 He touches that open coffin. 00:21:16.87\00:21:20.49 "And He came and He touched the open coffin 00:21:20.52\00:21:22.09 and those who carry him stood still 00:21:22.12\00:21:24.19 and He said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.' 00:21:24.22\00:21:28.95 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak," 00:21:28.98\00:21:31.82 but they forgot to write it down. 00:21:31.85\00:21:35.97 "And He," Jesus, "presented him to his mother." 00:21:36.00\00:21:39.08 Verse 16, "Then fear came upon all and they glorified," 00:21:39.11\00:21:42.67 the Greek reads doxologized. 00:21:42.70\00:21:44.68 They sang a doxology to God saying, 00:21:44.71\00:21:46.93 "A great prophet has risen among us." 00:21:46.96\00:21:49.66 We're doing a series right now called "The Gift," 00:21:49.69\00:21:51.19 it's about prophets and prophecy. 00:21:51.22\00:21:53.81 That's why we're in this text. 00:21:53.84\00:21:55.83 "A great prophet," the greatest prophet of all, 00:21:55.86\00:21:58.74 "has risen up among us, and God his visited His people. 00:21:58.77\00:22:02.86 And this report about Jesus went throughout all Judea 00:22:02.89\00:22:06.24 and all the surrounding region." 00:22:06.27\00:22:08.52 The end. So here's the question. 00:22:08.55\00:22:10.91 Could this story be a story about you and me? 00:22:10.94\00:22:14.79 Do you suppose that inside of us, 00:22:14.82\00:22:17.18 all the while carried along in our frenetic lives 00:22:17.21\00:22:20.54 ever since we left Andrews University 00:22:20.57\00:22:22.23 or ever since we arrived at Andrews University, 00:22:22.26\00:22:24.43 carried along by the crowd of circumstances, 00:22:24.46\00:22:27.32 but inside of us we are hiding a heart grown cold, 00:22:27.35\00:22:32.11 a heart that has turned pulseless? 00:22:32.14\00:22:34.55 Could this be a story about us? Yes, true. 00:22:34.58\00:22:38.42 Once we were alive in Christ. 00:22:38.45\00:22:41.35 Once, God and His righteousness meant something to us, 00:22:41.38\00:22:45.65 but over the passing of the days 00:22:45.68\00:22:47.67 and the months and the years, the flickering hope and faith 00:22:47.70\00:22:54.59 that was once ours has been snuffed 00:22:54.62\00:22:58.42 and is extinguished. 00:22:58.45\00:23:01.04 Could it be that this is a tale about you and me, 00:23:01.07\00:23:05.55 our passion for things eternal gone cold and dead? 00:23:05.58\00:23:08.55 I'll tell you what, if it's a story about you, 00:23:08.58\00:23:10.68 my friend, and if it's a story about me, 00:23:10.71\00:23:12.68 then it is very clear from this story 00:23:12.71\00:23:14.43 we need to meet the same Jesus on the way 00:23:14.46\00:23:17.56 we're traveling, whatever that way is. 00:23:17.59\00:23:22.42 We need to meet Him before our hopes are buried 00:23:22.45\00:23:24.13 and our faith finally is laid to rest. 00:23:24.16\00:23:26.96 We need to the crucified and risen One to put His nail 00:23:26.99\00:23:29.82 scarred hand on the coffin of our innocence 00:23:29.85\00:23:32.62 before it's buried and say, "Young man, boy, young woman, 00:23:32.65\00:23:37.09 old man, old woman, I say to you it's time. 00:23:37.12\00:23:41.85 You need a resurrection. It's time to rise up again. 00:23:41.88\00:23:45.90 I say to you arise." A handful of students pray. 00:34:03.05\00:34:06.94 It goes on and talks about how revival 00:34:06.97\00:34:08.56 spread from here to CUC, how it went to AUC. 00:34:08.59\00:34:11.39 By the way, listen to this, 00:34:11.42\00:34:12.68 Christmas, that fall's Christmas, 00:34:12.71\00:34:15.60 students from all three campuses 00:34:15.63\00:34:16.96 descend on New York City 00:34:16.99\00:34:18.51 and they were sharing Christ on the sidewalks. 00:34:18.54\00:34:21.24 Christianity Today, the revered evangelical journal, 00:34:21.27\00:34:25.34 hears of what happened in New York City, 00:34:25.37\00:34:27.68 gets a hold of CUC because the Christianity 00:34:27.71\00:34:30.15 Today officers used to be in Washington. 00:34:30.18\00:34:32.81 The college sent students and the Dean, 00:34:32.84\00:34:34.82 they gave the worship at Christianity Today 00:34:34.85\00:34:36.97 and later that winter they carried a story 00:34:37.00\00:34:41.68 of the revival sweeping through Adventist colleges. 00:34:41.71\00:34:46.34 Mercy, revival, resurrection, new life, 00:34:46.37\00:34:53.44 sweeping in to the midst of a school. 00:34:53.47\00:35:00.88 I know this kind of-- this feels a bit of an affront. 00:35:00.91\00:35:08.87 And I don't mean it to be an affront, 00:35:08.90\00:35:14.70 but could it be 00:35:14.73\00:35:17.04 that what Andrews University needs most, 00:35:17.07\00:35:18.86 and I'm talking about myself, 00:35:18.89\00:35:22.01 could it be that what we need most right now 00:35:22.04\00:35:26.82 is another revival, the outpouring 00:35:26.85\00:35:30.29 of the Holy Spirit on this campus? 00:35:30.32\00:35:34.59 I know that it's like Dwight L. Moody 00:35:34.62\00:35:37.54 was preaching one night. 00:35:37.57\00:35:38.98 He was preaching a series of nights 00:35:39.01\00:35:40.27 in the YMCA in Chicago back in 1871 00:35:40.30\00:35:43.00 and two women came through line as he was preaching. 00:35:43.03\00:35:45.28 And after he was through and they said, 00:35:45.31\00:35:46.87 "You know, Mr. Moody, we've been praying for you. 00:35:46.90\00:35:49.32 You need the baptism of the Holy Spirit." 00:35:49.35\00:35:50.66 He's just like next. 00:35:50.69\00:35:52.09 And they kept coming through night after night. 00:35:52.12\00:35:53.59 "We've been praying for you. 00:35:53.62\00:35:55.33 You need the baptism of the Holy Spirit." 00:35:55.36\00:35:56.99 And finally one night his temper threadbare 00:35:57.02\00:35:59.57 when they make the same speech, he just loses it. 00:35:59.60\00:36:02.46 He said, "Why don't you pray for the unsaved? 00:36:02.49\00:36:05.10 You shouldn't be praying for me." 00:36:05.13\00:36:07.50 But they kept coming back night after night. 00:36:07.53\00:36:11.40 And one night, when everybody had left, 00:36:11.43\00:36:13.82 he said, "Listen, I got to talk. 00:36:13.85\00:36:15.09 What is this about the Holy Spirit?" 00:36:15.12\00:36:18.23 And the rest is history. 00:36:18.26\00:36:20.69 Of course, it's an affront. But you know what? 00:36:20.72\00:36:24.79 To say we don't need a revival puts us in the company 00:36:24.82\00:36:28.12 of a little church called Laodicea, 00:36:28.15\00:36:29.81 who says, "I have need of nothing. 00:36:29.84\00:36:31.22 I don't need a revival." 00:36:31.25\00:36:35.94 A hundred years ago, a little woman who picked out 00:36:35.97\00:36:39.16 this piece of Southwestern Michigan farmland 00:36:39.19\00:36:41.88 to become the new address for Battle Creek College, 00:36:41.91\00:36:44.00 she wrote these words. 00:36:44.03\00:36:45.06 I'll put it on the screen for you. 00:36:45.09\00:36:47.23 "A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest 00:36:47.26\00:36:53.35 and most urgent of all our needs." 00:36:53.38\00:36:56.84 Look, if that was-- if that was 200 years ago, 00:36:56.87\00:36:59.50 it is exponentially more true, is it not? 00:36:59.53\00:37:03.04 "A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest 00:37:03.07\00:37:05.29 and most urgent of all our needs. 00:37:05.32\00:37:07.12 To seek this should be our first work." 00:37:07.15\00:37:10.32 First work. 00:37:10.35\00:37:14.71 Revival, she went on, 00:37:14.74\00:37:16.38 "A revival need to be expected only in answer to prayer." 00:37:16.41\00:37:21.81 It won't come any other way. We have to ask. 00:37:21.84\00:37:26.99 That's why today is day 32 of our 40 days of prayer here 00:37:27.02\00:37:31.01 at Andrews University in the Pioneer Memorial Church. 00:37:31.04\00:37:34.40 For 32 days now we've been praying for God to pour out 00:37:34.43\00:37:37.52 His Spirit on us individually, just pour out Your Spirit, God. 00:37:37.55\00:37:44.26 The life giver, the Christ Himself, 00:37:44.29\00:37:47.48 he'd move in our midst with this reviving, 00:37:47.51\00:37:50.04 this resurrecting power. 00:37:50.07\00:37:52.45 For 32 days now 00:37:52.48\00:37:53.61 we've been connecting with a prayer partner 00:37:53.64\00:37:55.21 somewhere on this campus, somewhere in this community, 00:37:55.24\00:37:58.58 reviewing the days reading from this little book 00:37:58.61\00:38:00.65 by Dennis Smith, called "40 Days." 00:38:00.68\00:38:02.52 It's a great book, 00:38:02.55\00:38:03.58 if you can pick up the book before you leave. 00:38:03.61\00:38:05.83 Pick up the book. 00:38:05.86\00:38:07.59 Every day we're on the phone, 00:38:07.62\00:38:09.08 we're connecting, reviewing the reading. 00:38:09.11\00:38:11.65 And you know what we're praying for? 00:38:11.68\00:38:13.02 Holy Spirit, baptize me. Just baptize me. 00:38:13.05\00:38:18.57 Pour out yourself in my life. 00:38:18.60\00:38:21.47 And, yeah, we're praying for this church, 00:38:21.50\00:38:22.76 this congregation. 00:38:22.79\00:38:24.31 We're praying for this campus. 00:38:24.34\00:38:26.67 We're praying that God would open the windows of heaven 00:38:26.70\00:38:28.47 and pour out such a blessing 00:38:28.50\00:38:29.54 that there wouldn't be room enough to receive it. 00:38:29.57\00:38:31.66 We're asking God to do it again 40 years later. 00:38:31.69\00:38:34.82 Only do it deeper, do it wider this time. 00:38:34.85\00:38:38.98 Why not? What have we got to lose? 00:38:39.01\00:38:41.96 Nothing. 00:38:41.99\00:38:44.45 Revival of true God and this is our greatest need. 00:38:44.48\00:38:46.69 It will only come though in answer to prayer. 00:38:46.72\00:38:51.95 And so we're praying and praying 00:38:51.98\00:38:53.91 and praying when the 40 days end, 00:38:53.94\00:38:56.50 10 days in that little prayer room begin, 00:38:56.53\00:39:00.72 I want, dear Lord, a heart that's true and clean. 00:39:00.75\00:39:04.08 I want that heart, Jesus. Resurrect my heart. 00:39:04.11\00:39:08.53 Start over in my life. Give me a new heart. 00:39:08.56\00:39:14.76 Because we want that heart, 00:39:14.79\00:39:16.91 that's why next Friday night right here, right here in this, 00:39:16.94\00:39:20.53 in this pulpit Lee Venden, totally coincidental, 00:39:20.56\00:39:24.86 Lee Venden, the son of Morris Venden, 00:39:24.89\00:39:26.59 will step into our church and onto this campus 00:39:26.62\00:39:30.87 and begin nine nights of revival preaching. 00:39:30.90\00:39:34.73 How come, Dwight? 00:39:34.76\00:39:35.93 Because we need a revival.
