In the seasons of our silence 00:00:52.82\00:00:57.87 In our darkness, in our day 00:00:57.90\00:01:02.93 Gracious Savior, as you promised 00:01:02.96\00:01:08.02 You are never far away 00:01:08.05\00:01:13.69 Neither life nor death can part us 00:01:13.72\00:01:18.68 Earth be low nor stars 00:01:18.71\00:01:22.32 In the seasons of our silence 00:03:30.30\00:03:35.34 In our darkness, in our day 00:03:35.37\00:03:40.33 Gracious Savior, as you promised 00:03:40.36\00:03:45.56 You are never far away 00:03:45.59\00:03:50.71 Neither life nor death can part us 00:03:50.74\00:03:55.92 Earth be low nor stars 00:03:55.95\00:03:58.78 A everlasting love 00:04:07.51\00:04:13.46 We are honor to have 00:04:38.41\00:04:40.95 your alumni return to your home campus, 00:04:40.98\00:04:43.95 your home church. 00:04:43.98\00:04:47.08 You have sensed this morning, 00:04:47.11\00:04:50.47 why some of us keep coming back to this place 00:04:50.50\00:04:54.30 Sabbath after Sabbath to worship. 00:04:54.33\00:04:56.65 We are so blessed. 00:04:56.68\00:04:59.58 Student leaders who... 00:04:59.61\00:05:04.46 have embraced a vision of worship 00:05:04.49\00:05:08.68 I tell you what every time I sit at their feet 00:05:08.71\00:05:11.15 as they lead us as if the portals open or into, 00:05:11.18\00:05:16.94 I should enter that throne room. 00:05:16.97\00:05:23.08 I need you to take-- 00:05:23.11\00:05:24.79 I am going to call an audible right here 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.67 The School of Architecture. 00:05:26.70\00:05:29.20 I need you to take your Bible out there. 00:05:29.23\00:05:30.85 You didn't bring a Bible, there's one in a pew rack 00:05:30.88\00:05:33.07 in front of you. 00:05:33.10\00:05:35.44 I was listening to Pastor Ernie Frank 00:05:35.47\00:05:37.01 just a moment ago 00:05:37.04\00:05:38.07 and when he accessed these words. 00:05:39.15\00:05:41.77 I must confess I've forgotten the words were in scripture. 00:05:41.80\00:05:45.53 I wanna read these words and then invite 00:05:45.56\00:05:47.28 my friends from The School of Architecture 00:05:47.31\00:05:48.63 to come and join me here. 00:05:48.66\00:05:52.54 Hebrews, the little Book of Hebrews 00:05:52.57\00:05:57.13 in the New Testament, 00:05:57.16\00:05:59.23 Hebrews Chapter 11, Bible's hall of fame, 00:05:59.26\00:06:03.30 hall of faith chapter, Hebrews 11. 00:06:03.33\00:06:06.97 Take a look at this. 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.24 They're really big 00:06:09.27\00:06:10.40 as a community of faith on that opening salv 00:06:10.43\00:06:12.93 and all those by faith, by faith, by faith. 00:06:12.96\00:06:16.31 But tucked away there at the end. 00:06:16.34\00:06:19.57 I've been reminded this morning are these words as well. 00:06:19.60\00:06:22.42 I want you to see it, let see drop down to verse 37. 00:06:22.45\00:06:26.03 Whatever transition you have, 00:06:26.06\00:06:27.09 I'll be in the New King James Version 00:06:27.12\00:06:28.39 which is your pew Bible. 00:06:28.42\00:06:32.62 Hebrews 11:37 and "They were stoned, 00:06:32.65\00:06:35.39 sawed in two" let's read, "they were tempted, 00:06:36.94\00:06:42.95 they were slain with the sword: 00:06:42.98\00:06:44.65 they wandered about in sheepskins and goats skins; 00:06:46.72\00:06:49.16 being destitute, afflicted and tormented..." 00:06:49.19\00:06:52.12 And then this outstanding line 00:06:52.15\00:06:56.62 verse 38, "Of whom the world..." 00:06:56.65\00:06:59.98 as it go "Of whom the world was not worthy..." 00:07:00.01\00:07:03.06 Yeah, and then don't forget the rest of 38, 00:07:03.09\00:07:07.07 "For they wandered in deserts, in mountains, 00:07:07.10\00:07:09.25 in dens and caves of the earth." 00:07:09.28\00:07:13.78 Karen and I have the privilege 00:07:13.81\00:07:14.86 this summer four unforgettable days for us 00:07:14.89\00:07:17.19 for the two of us to join The School of Architecture 00:07:17.22\00:07:20.50 in the northwest corner of Italy. 00:07:20.53\00:07:25.87 Seven Alpine Valleys that have become identified 00:07:25.90\00:07:28.83 as sequestered home 00:07:32.60\00:07:35.53 of a Christian sect called the Waldenses. 00:07:35.56\00:07:38.76 I wanna invite my friends from The School of Architecture 00:07:38.79\00:07:40.52 to come right now. 00:07:40.55\00:07:41.62 I need to have 00:07:41.65\00:07:42.78 or they're gonna be come in shifts, 00:07:42.81\00:07:43.92 the Kishah and Bryce, no Kishah and Chris, 00:07:43.95\00:07:46.34 sorry Bryce, look up to you next. 00:07:46.37\00:07:49.31 Kishah Michel and Christopher Perry, 00:07:49.34\00:07:52.09 Carey Carscallen, dean of The School of Architecture 00:07:52.12\00:07:55.44 and Kathy Demsky, librarian, 00:07:55.47\00:07:59.03 affectionately called Mrs. 'D' by the students. 00:07:59.06\00:08:03.32 Kishah and Chris we just added a scripture. 00:08:03.35\00:08:08.53 But I wanna go to the two that you have 00:08:08.56\00:08:10.77 and take a look at two key pieces 00:08:10.80\00:08:15.14 to set up a story of the Waldenses. 00:08:15.17\00:08:16.80 And, Kishah, let start with you in the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:08:16.83\00:08:19.95 This is our theme book for our semester series 00:08:19.98\00:08:22.70 call The Chosen here at Pioneer this semester. 00:08:22.73\00:08:27.83 Well, we gonna read, Kishah with, 00:08:27.86\00:08:29.55 what chapter's that? 00:08:29.58\00:08:30.61 Deuteronomy 4:7-10. 00:08:30.64\00:08:34.50 All right, let's look at up with Kishah 00:08:34.53\00:08:37.12 our worshippers Deuteronomy 4 00:08:37.15\00:08:41.36 beginning in verse 7. 00:08:41.39\00:08:46.53 All right, Kishah. 00:08:51.84\00:08:53.79 "What other nation is so great 00:08:53.82\00:08:55.91 as to have their Gods near them 00:08:55.94\00:08:57.67 the way the Lord our God is near to us 00:08:57.70\00:08:59.93 whenever we pray to him? 00:08:59.96\00:09:02.71 And what other nation is so great 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.05 as to have such righteous decrees 00:09:05.08\00:09:07.03 and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? 00:09:07.06\00:09:12.11 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely 00:09:12.14\00:09:14.97 so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen 00:09:15.00\00:09:18.23 or let them slip from your heart 00:09:18.26\00:09:19.87 as long as you live. 00:09:19.90\00:09:22.23 Teach them to your children 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.69 and to their children after them. 00:09:23.72\00:09:26.36 Remember the day you stood 00:09:26.39\00:09:27.72 before the Lord your God at Horeb, 00:09:27.75\00:09:29.86 when he said to me, 'Assemble the people 00:09:29.89\00:09:32.18 before me to hear my words so that they may learn 00:09:32.21\00:09:35.06 to revere me as long as they live in the land 00:09:35.09\00:09:37.88 and may teach them to their children."' 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.55 Thank you, Kishah. 00:09:40.58\00:09:41.66 Amazing that in this single passage in Deuteronomy 00:09:41.69\00:09:47.34 and we remember, Moses is addressing 00:09:47.37\00:09:49.37 a grown up generation, 00:09:49.40\00:09:50.64 who is just about to cross into the Promised Land. 00:09:50.67\00:09:52.54 What's amazing, 00:09:52.57\00:09:54.77 and I have to remind myself of this, 00:09:54.80\00:09:56.93 is that, they were not in Egypt. 00:09:56.96\00:09:59.31 He says "Remember when you were in Egypt," 00:09:59.34\00:10:00.56 but they weren't in Egypt, they didn't see any of that 00:10:00.59\00:10:03.48 supernatural deliverance 00:10:03.51\00:10:04.88 and yet because they are children 00:10:04.91\00:10:07.52 of the fathers and mothers of faith, 00:10:07.55\00:10:09.07 the story becomes theirs. 00:10:09.10\00:10:10.32 And we actually put ourselves into that story. 00:10:10.35\00:10:13.44 So as we... 00:10:13.47\00:10:14.80 we move into this tale that we share this morning. 00:10:14.83\00:10:20.58 Somehow we're the children of the, 00:10:20.61\00:10:22.06 children of the, children of the children 00:10:22.09\00:10:23.51 and this story becomes ours as well. 00:10:23.54\00:10:25.87 But we need one more piece, Christopher Perry. 00:10:25.90\00:10:29.24 Lets go to the Apocalypse, let set this up so we get... 00:10:29.27\00:10:32.89 prophetic and historical setting 00:10:32.92\00:10:34.33 for the Waldenses. 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.57 Revelation 12:13-16. 00:10:36.60\00:10:39.81 All right, let us find it with you there. 00:10:39.84\00:10:44.31 It says, "When the dragon saw that 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.70 he had been hurled to the earth-- 00:10:46.73\00:10:47.76 Hold it right here. Who's the dragon? 00:10:47.79\00:10:49.71 This Dragon is Satan. All right, go ahead. 00:10:49.74\00:10:52.46 "He pursued the woman" 00:10:52.49\00:10:54.05 Who-- who's the woman? 00:10:54.08\00:10:55.46 This woman is a church. 00:10:55.49\00:10:56.71 A church. All right. 00:10:56.74\00:10:57.81 The School of Architecture, good for you. 00:10:57.84\00:11:00.15 All right, so the dragon, the devil, 00:11:00.18\00:11:02.60 saw the church and what did he do? 00:11:02.63\00:11:04.32 "He pursued the woman 00:11:04.35\00:11:05.53 who had given birth to the male child." 00:11:05.56\00:11:07.55 Who's the male child? This is Jesus. 00:11:07.58\00:11:09.15 Hallelujah. All right, keep going. 00:11:09.18\00:11:12.44 "The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, 00:11:12.47\00:11:15.50 so that she might fly to the place 00:11:15.53\00:11:17.56 prepared for her in the desert, 00:11:17.59\00:11:19.36 where she would be taken care 00:11:19.39\00:11:20.98 of for a time, times and half a time..." 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.92 All right, hold it right there architect to be. 00:11:23.95\00:11:26.51 What in a world is that mean time, times and half a time? 00:11:26.54\00:11:29.68 That's the 1,260 day prophecy. 00:11:29.71\00:11:32.40 And in the Bible prophecy, a day equals? 00:11:32.43\00:11:34.52 One year. One year. 00:11:34.55\00:11:35.79 So we have a period of 1000 years 00:11:35.82\00:11:38.24 Middle Ages, Dark Ages history. 00:11:38.27\00:11:41.66 The enemy going for the community of faith, 00:11:41.69\00:11:44.39 they flee into the wilderness. 00:11:44.42\00:11:45.49 "Out of the serpent's reach..." 00:11:45.52\00:11:47.77 "Then from his mouth 00:11:47.80\00:11:48.94 the serpent spewed water like a river, 00:11:48.97\00:11:51.31 to overtake the woman 00:11:51.34\00:11:52.61 and sweep her away with the torrent. 00:11:52.65\00:11:54.92 But the earth helped the woman 00:11:54.95\00:11:56.55 by opening its mouth and swallowing the river 00:11:56.58\00:11:59.12 that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth." 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.42 Amazing. 00:12:01.45\00:12:02.62 So God uses the earth itself 00:12:02.65\00:12:05.48 to shield this community of faith in hiding. 00:12:05.51\00:12:07.92 The actual barren rocks 00:12:07.95\00:12:11.68 become God's ammunitions as it where, you know. 00:12:11.71\00:12:15.42 Now thank you both Kishah and Chris. 00:12:15.45\00:12:18.44 Uh, Carey Carscallen, dean of The School of Architecture, 00:12:18.47\00:12:21.63 look we all know what architecture is. 00:12:21.66\00:12:24.02 How can you explain having Waldenses studies 00:12:24.05\00:12:27.78 in School of Architecture. 00:12:27.81\00:12:29.19 But we look for ever-- every opportunity 00:12:29.22\00:12:31.56 we can integrate faith in learning. 00:12:31.59\00:12:34.23 Well, we want to do it in real in meaningful ways. 00:12:34.26\00:12:36.33 Okay. 00:12:36.36\00:12:37.39 We want our students to appreciate 00:12:37.42\00:12:39.01 not only the grand and majestic architecture 00:12:39.04\00:12:42.46 but also the ordinary, the humble. 00:12:42.49\00:12:45.03 And so have-- just before this experience, 00:12:45.06\00:12:47.55 they've been traveling for a month in Europe, 00:12:47.58\00:12:50.01 looking at some of these great architecture 00:12:50.04\00:12:52.32 and significant urban spaces 00:12:52.35\00:12:55.11 but then we take them up in to these Alpine Valleys 00:12:55.14\00:12:58.93 where they can look at some very humble stone buildings, 00:12:58.96\00:13:03.44 houses and settlements that are made with stone and wood. 00:13:03.47\00:13:06.59 Beautiful, okay. And as they-- 00:13:06.62\00:13:08.58 They're drawing and contemplating. 00:13:08.61\00:13:11.70 They not only think about this humble architecture 00:13:11.73\00:13:13.93 but the people who dwelled there, 00:13:13.96\00:13:16.03 who lived there, who built those 00:13:16.06\00:13:17.87 and who ultimately died there. 00:13:17.90\00:13:19.63 And it gives them an opportunity 00:13:19.66\00:13:21.04 to think about their own faith 00:13:21.07\00:13:23.40 and their calling in relationship to this. 00:13:23.43\00:13:26.21 I know you're proud of your students in this, are we? 00:13:26.24\00:13:28.44 Incredible bunch. 00:13:28.47\00:13:29.77 All right, guys, before you sit down, 00:13:29.80\00:13:30.90 just gonna bring another way up here. 00:13:30.93\00:13:32.18 But Mrs. D, Kathy Demsky, 00:13:32.21\00:13:34.77 you're probably the resident authority on this campus. 00:13:34.80\00:13:39.45 Done most readings certainly into the history 00:13:39.48\00:13:41.21 of the Waldenses Community, 00:13:41.24\00:13:42.71 that little sect through the centuries, 00:13:42.74\00:13:45.99 Uh, Kathy, let set it up before the kids come up here. 00:13:46.02\00:13:48.77 Okay, who are they? Who are the Waldenses? 00:13:48.80\00:13:50.59 They were the people that learnt Christianity 00:13:50.62\00:13:53.15 from the apostles. 00:13:53.18\00:13:55.02 When Rome was-- when Paul was in Rome 00:13:55.05\00:13:58.07 and Nero began persecuting Christians. 00:13:58.10\00:14:00.51 These early primitive people 00:14:00.54\00:14:02.89 fled to the Piedmont Valleys in the North of Italy. 00:14:02.92\00:14:05.76 In fact let's put the map up there 00:14:05.79\00:14:07.70 on the screen please of Italy. 00:14:07.73\00:14:09.58 And you will see there in the northwest corner. 00:14:09.61\00:14:13.71 You have Carey Carscallen in the northwest corner 00:14:13.74\00:14:15.90 actually up on the screen right there, here we go. 00:14:15.93\00:14:19.86 Uh, there it is, the Piedmont right above the Torre Pellice. 00:14:19.89\00:14:23.72 So they-- they move out of Rome 00:14:23.75\00:14:25.21 and they moved northward. 00:14:25.24\00:14:26.43 Right. 00:14:26.46\00:14:27.49 And they were the chosen, 00:14:27.52\00:14:29.01 the chosen of God to preserve scripture 00:14:29.04\00:14:31.72 and their faith through the Dark Ages 00:14:31.75\00:14:33.30 of this world's history. 00:14:33.33\00:14:34.95 They were the guardians of divine truth 00:14:34.98\00:14:36.67 and Holy Scripture 00:14:36.70\00:14:38.80 and they did more than just preserve 00:14:38.83\00:14:41.83 the Holy Scripture and their faith. 00:14:41.86\00:14:44.05 They went out as missionaries by twos 00:14:44.08\00:14:46.91 and they took the scripture 00:14:46.94\00:14:48.34 and their faith all over Europe. 00:14:48.37\00:14:50.27 A radical mission band, 00:14:50.30\00:14:51.82 we want to come back with that thought before 00:14:51.85\00:14:53.26 we're through this morning. 00:14:53.29\00:14:54.81 Uh, one last question for you Kathy, 00:14:54.84\00:14:59.56 why is it, 00:14:59.59\00:15:02.72 that in Dark Age's history there is so much heartache 00:15:02.75\00:15:05.66 attached to the story of the Waldenses? 00:15:05.69\00:15:08.81 There was-- it is said that 00:15:08.84\00:15:10.11 there was not a people that were more maligned 00:15:10.14\00:15:12.26 and persecuted than the Waldenses. 00:15:12.29\00:15:14.10 But they were peace loving people. 00:15:14.13\00:15:16.42 They were crushed over and over. 00:15:16.45\00:15:21.72 As a kid grown up with the story, 00:15:21.75\00:15:22.92 I figured it was just big wave and then good bye Waldenses. 00:15:22.95\00:15:25.65 Oh, no, it happens over and over. 00:15:25.68\00:15:27.23 As you had us view before the tour 00:15:27.26\00:15:29.12 and century after century, extermination 00:15:29.15\00:15:32.19 and then go back extermination, go back. 00:15:32.22\00:15:34.57 And they never lost their faith. 00:15:34.60\00:15:36.07 Actually they were the people who kept the light shining. 00:15:36.10\00:15:38.75 In fact we got, let's put that on the screen, 00:15:38.78\00:15:41.45 I want to skip that slide if you have up there now. 00:15:41.48\00:15:42.90 Well, let's show that 00:15:42.93\00:15:43.96 because, Kathy, you're talking about 00:15:43.99\00:15:45.02 the difference in the architecture. 00:15:45.05\00:15:46.46 There's the El Duomo in Milan, 00:15:46.49\00:15:48.67 which existed at the time of Waldenses. 00:15:48.70\00:15:50.77 Ornate architecture, beautiful. 00:15:50.80\00:15:52.32 Karen and I went through that. 00:15:52.35\00:15:53.76 And then on the right there is the architecture 00:15:53.79\00:15:56.15 of the Waldenses in the Alpine Valleys, 00:15:56.18\00:15:58.65 Seven Valleys in the Northwest Piedmont's 00:15:58.68\00:16:01.45 that were designated Waldensian Valleys. 00:16:01.48\00:16:04.10 And now I want to go to the logo, 00:16:04.13\00:16:05.64 I shot this at the little Waldensian Church. 00:16:05.67\00:16:07.77 By the way the Waldensians still live. 00:16:07.80\00:16:09.83 They exist, they have churches, very few of them. 00:16:09.86\00:16:12.50 This is at a church 00:16:12.53\00:16:13.63 we worshipped in Sabbath morning 00:16:13.66\00:16:14.97 and there's a Latin model Lux Lucet in Tenebris, 00:16:15.00\00:16:18.11 a light shines in darkness. 00:16:18.14\00:16:20.78 So let's go into the story. 00:16:20.81\00:16:22.08 Thank you, Christopher and Kishah. 00:16:22.11\00:16:23.14 Thank you, Kathy. 00:16:23.17\00:16:24.20 Let's bring up our next wave, 00:16:24.23\00:16:25.53 it is your turn this time, 00:16:25.56\00:16:26.68 Bryce, and you and Sandra, Esmeralda, 00:16:26.71\00:16:30.54 come on up and join us here. 00:16:30.57\00:16:36.45 So we're all together for these few days. 00:16:36.48\00:16:39.00 I get to you in just a moment 00:16:39.03\00:16:40.46 but let set it up with some pictures. 00:16:40.49\00:16:42.71 So that everybody gets a feel 00:16:42.74\00:16:43.79 for this Castelluzzo, this is-- 00:16:43.82\00:16:46.37 this towering, rocky pinnacle. 00:16:46.40\00:16:49.43 So let's put some pictures up so that you can see 00:16:49.46\00:16:51.68 Andrews University students on the move. 00:16:51.71\00:16:53.89 Here's the picture, next please. 00:16:53.92\00:16:57.15 They keep moving, this-- 00:16:57.18\00:16:58.23 this, hey, Bryce by the way this is a long climb. 00:16:58.26\00:17:00.18 How long do you think it took us to get to the top? 00:18:40.46\00:18:43.70 Well, as my dean was already saying. 00:18:43.73\00:18:46.05 We just spend over a month traveling all through Europe, 00:18:46.08\00:18:49.21 great cities as Rome and Paris studying architecture 00:18:49.24\00:18:52.81 and I signed up for this class thinking that 00:18:52.84\00:18:57.52 I'd just continue on with another architectural portion, 00:18:57.55\00:19:01.14 but the things that I questioned 00:19:01.17\00:19:02.66 when on this strip 00:19:02.69\00:19:04.10 went far deeper than any building studies. 00:19:04.13\00:19:08.54 When this journey was one that, 00:19:08.57\00:19:13.04 not just examining architecture, 00:19:13.07\00:19:14.74 but one of your faith. 00:19:14.77\00:19:17.54 And when you climb that mountain, 00:19:17.57\00:19:20.78 the several hours that it took us 00:19:20.81\00:19:22.24 in the middle of the day, maybe even longer 00:19:22.27\00:19:24.23 because some of us got lost. 00:19:24.26\00:19:26.56 But thinking of the Waldensians 00:19:26.59\00:19:28.08 doing it in the middle of the night to escape 00:19:28.11\00:19:30.19 from the Roman soldiers coming after them. 00:19:30.22\00:19:34.55 I could barely make it up there, 00:19:34.58\00:19:36.03 my weak body, all of ours. 00:19:36.06\00:19:37.86 But they scaled it in the middle of the night 00:19:37.89\00:19:39.80 and when you reach top of that cliff, 00:19:39.83\00:19:42.19 just staring down thousands of feet to the city below. 00:19:42.22\00:19:47.54 You can't even imagine what the Waldensians 00:19:47.57\00:19:50.86 were thinking to steer their faith head on 00:19:50.89\00:19:55.95 and to give their life for their faith 00:19:55.98\00:19:58.81 and their belief in Jesus Christ. 00:19:58.85\00:20:01.89 I stood there questioning, if I could do the same. 00:20:01.92\00:20:04.60 Mm-mm, thank you, Bryce. 00:20:04.64\00:20:07.50 Esmeralda, how about you, 00:20:07.53\00:20:10.55 I was reading your paper here and you wrote... 00:20:10.58\00:20:14.31 you wrote this line "I never thought that 00:20:14.34\00:20:16.65 I would be in the place, the same place, 00:20:16.68\00:20:19.56 where some people stood hundreds of years ago 00:20:19.59\00:20:21.27 for their faith to take their last breath." 00:20:21.30\00:20:23.09 So you're at the top now, 00:20:23.12\00:20:24.47 what's going through your heart? 00:20:24.50\00:20:26.71 Actually I can kind of remember 00:20:26.74\00:20:27.91 what's going on through my heart 00:20:27.94\00:20:28.97 because my heart is pounding really hard right now 00:20:29.00\00:20:31.92 and it reminds me of probably as much as it 00:20:31.95\00:20:34.28 pounded when I got to the top. 00:20:34.31\00:20:36.31 It was a long ways up like, 00:20:36.34\00:20:37.84 Bryce said of like five hours for me, I'm a slow walker. 00:20:37.87\00:20:41.53 But, when I got to the top 00:20:41.56\00:20:43.43 I did feel like my heart was gonna fall of 00:20:43.46\00:20:45.72 and I just thought of, 00:20:45.75\00:20:48.65 how would I react to people persecuting me for my faith 00:20:48.68\00:20:54.71 as a Waldensians women thousands of years ago. 00:20:54.74\00:20:58.03 And what I have stepped off from my faith, my faith, 00:20:58.06\00:21:02.43 would I let myself get thrown off the cliff 00:21:02.46\00:21:05.70 and die for God 00:21:05.73\00:21:07.11 or would I stay back and reject God. 00:21:07.14\00:21:11.03 And, standing up there it made me 00:21:11.06\00:21:14.11 rethink of what is that I really believe? 00:21:14.14\00:21:17.68 And whatever I believe is it worth it. 00:21:17.71\00:21:21.59 And as it was for the Waldensians 00:21:21.62\00:21:24.22 hundreds and hundreds of years ago 00:21:24.25\00:21:25.61 I think it's worth it to me now 00:21:25.64\00:21:27.31 and, um, it was kind of a refreshing, 00:21:27.34\00:21:30.84 stuff for me to actually arrive 00:21:30.87\00:21:32.52 where they took their last breath. 00:21:32.55\00:21:34.54 Good, good. 00:21:34.57\00:21:37.09 Sandra, John Milton, a blind English poet, 00:21:37.12\00:21:40.26 he immortalized 00:21:40.29\00:21:42.51 that Castelluzzo moment, April 24, 1655. 00:21:42.54\00:21:46.56 When the world finally got to England, 00:21:46.59\00:21:48.82 written eye witness accounts, Sir Oliver Cromwell 00:21:48.85\00:21:51.00 was so aghast that crime against humanity 00:21:51.03\00:21:54.32 that he declared a national day 00:21:54.35\00:21:55.57 of fasting and prayer in England. 00:21:55.60\00:21:57.26 John Milton then, takes pen in hand 00:21:57.29\00:22:00.09 in his daughter's hand, 00:22:00.12\00:22:01.15 because he is blind, he recites this poem 00:22:01.18\00:22:03.23 on the late massacre in the Piedmonts. 00:22:03.26\00:22:05.96 Can you read that for us, please? 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.43 "Avenge, O Lord, thy slaughter'd saints, 00:22:08.46\00:22:11.48 whose bones Lie scatter'd on the Alpine mountains cold 00:22:11.51\00:22:15.06 Ev'n them who kept thy truth so pure of old 00:22:15.09\00:22:17.98 When all our fathers worshipp'd stocks and stones 00:22:18.01\00:22:21.53 Forget not: in thy book record their groans 00:22:21.56\00:22:24.80 Who were thy sheep and in their ancient fold Slain 00:22:24.83\00:22:27.76 by the bloody Piemontese 00:22:27.79\00:22:29.65 that roll'd Mother with infant down the rocks. 00:22:29.68\00:22:32.53 Their moans, the vales redoubl'd to the hills 00:22:32.56\00:22:34.99 And they to Heav'n 00:22:35.02\00:22:36.48 Their martyr'd blood and ashes sow 00:22:36.51\00:22:38.85 O'er all the' Italian fields 00:22:38.88\00:22:40.61 where still doth sway The triple tyrant; 00:22:40.64\00:22:43.24 that from these may grow A hundred-fold, 00:22:43.27\00:22:45.83 who having learnt thy way 00:22:45.86\00:22:47.57 Early may fly the Babylonian woe." 00:22:47.60\00:22:49.86 Isn't that something 00:22:49.89\00:22:50.97 from these may grow out of the seed. 00:22:51.00\00:22:53.48 Totalitarian said that 00:22:53.51\00:22:54.58 the blood of martyr is the seed. 00:22:54.61\00:22:56.26 From these the great English poets 00:22:56.29\00:22:58.09 may grow a new generation. 00:22:58.12\00:23:00.34 You know what, you're it. You are that generation. 00:23:00.37\00:23:03.66 I wanna move on to part two now. 00:23:03.69\00:23:05.91 Thank you, guys. 00:23:05.94\00:23:06.97 I'll bring up Kevin and Christie. 00:23:07.00\00:23:10.58 Come on up and join us. 00:23:10.61\00:23:12.45 Mrs. D, while they're coming up, 00:23:12.48\00:23:14.46 we're gonna talk about the cave. 00:23:14.49\00:23:16.56 How was that? 00:23:16.59\00:23:17.70 For me, unforgettable, unforgettable. 00:23:17.73\00:23:21.26 But, Kathie, it's interesting 00:23:21.29\00:23:22.32 in your assignment to these students. 00:23:22.35\00:23:25.92 The assignment does not read go and sketch a picture 00:23:25.95\00:23:29.34 of Waldensian houses of worship. 00:23:29.37\00:23:30.82 What's up with that? 00:23:30.85\00:23:31.99 Because in the village where you-- 00:23:32.02\00:23:34.14 Where we go to sketch there are no churches. 00:23:34.17\00:23:36.98 Because they were not allowed 00:23:37.01\00:23:38.45 to have formal places of worship 00:23:38.48\00:23:40.16 until around the early 1800's, so we don't-- 00:23:40.19\00:23:44.02 we attend church and then grown here, 00:23:44.05\00:23:46.51 and then we go to the cave, where they worshipped. 00:23:46.54\00:23:50.28 It's said that, they could fit 200 in there 00:23:50.31\00:23:52.56 that would've really been packed though. 00:23:52.59\00:23:54.09 This is the... the particular cave we went-- 00:23:54.12\00:23:55.16 The cave we went-- 00:23:55.19\00:23:56.24 Let's put a picture or two up there. 00:23:56.27\00:23:59.20 If you're into claustrophobia, this is not the cave to visit. 00:23:59.23\00:24:02.29 We're heading right there towards the opening. 00:24:02.32\00:24:04.11 Next picture please. 00:24:04.14\00:24:05.63 And then you got to down into that opening, 00:24:05.66\00:24:07.86 crawl into this space that holds about like you said 200. 00:24:07.89\00:24:11.13 Next picture please. 00:24:11.16\00:24:12.64 It's carved out kind of a dome feature. 00:24:12.67\00:24:17.57 And there we were Kathy had asked that 00:24:17.60\00:24:20.64 we celebrate Holy Communion in that cave, 00:24:20.67\00:24:23.63 most unforgettable Lord supper 00:24:23.66\00:24:25.18 I know that I will ever officiate at. 00:24:25.21\00:24:29.25 It's so dark that Kevin 00:24:29.28\00:24:30.56 who is sitting here in the middle. 00:24:30.59\00:24:32.20 Next picture please. 00:24:32.23\00:24:34.10 He has its little pocket flashlight 00:24:34.13\00:24:36.41 and he's shinning it over the shoulders 00:24:36.44\00:24:38.04 of Kathy and Conrad who are holding the tray 00:24:38.07\00:24:41.19 of communion of wine and bread. 00:24:41.22\00:24:44.21 There's no way we can distribute it, 00:24:44.24\00:24:45.84 if you drop it, there's no way 00:24:45.87\00:24:47.46 we can walk to it if we can't tell 00:24:47.49\00:24:48.92 where you are and so Kevin has 00:24:48.95\00:24:50.53 just beautifully there holding that light 00:24:50.56\00:24:52.20 so that you make your way to the light 00:24:52.23\00:24:54.88 and you'll find salvation. 00:24:54.91\00:24:56.04 What a metaphor that ended up for us. 00:24:56.07\00:24:58.47 Next picture shows everybody slowly inching their way 00:24:58.50\00:25:02.41 through the cave to receive the emblems 00:25:02.44\00:25:05.25 of Lord's victory for us on Calvary. 00:25:05.28\00:25:10.55 Christy, you've never worshipped in the cave 00:25:10.58\00:25:12.49 before and I had neither. 00:25:12.52\00:25:14.56 You're in that dank darkness, what's happening inside of you? 00:25:14.59\00:25:19.70 It was just very moving for me, 00:25:19.73\00:25:24.88 you know, and I saw the little hole that 00:25:24.91\00:25:26.45 we had to go through to get to cave, 00:25:26.48\00:25:27.71 it wasn't exactly what I was expecting 00:25:27.74\00:25:30.14 and when I got inside it was really dark 00:25:30.17\00:25:34.04 and yeah, cold rainy I had drops dripping on my head 00:25:34.07\00:25:37.37 'cause it had rained earlier in the day. 00:25:37.40\00:25:40.21 My eyes finally adjusted and I just kept thinking about 00:25:40.24\00:25:43.31 all the generations that had worshipped there before us. 00:25:43.34\00:25:46.56 And I kept imagining the families 00:25:46.59\00:25:49.38 that must have been there 00:25:49.41\00:25:50.51 and just these people really lived their faith 00:25:50.54\00:25:55.43 and it was amazing to be in the place 00:25:55.46\00:25:57.19 that they could come together and worship the Lord 00:25:57.22\00:26:01.63 and really renew themselves and get their strength 00:26:01.66\00:26:05.53 to live like they did, it was amazing. 00:26:05.56\00:26:09.88 And like Milton wrote out of their faith, 00:26:09.91\00:26:11.80 out of the seeds of their sacrificial faith 00:26:11.83\00:26:14.94 we are born, we are born. 00:26:14.97\00:26:16.88 Kevin, you've heard the Waldenses stories 00:26:16.91\00:26:20.27 since a kid growing up in the church. 00:26:20.30\00:26:23.85 You shared something with me that I thought was fascinating. 00:26:23.88\00:26:26.75 How the story affected you as a boy 00:26:26.78\00:26:29.12 when momma told it to you? 00:26:29.15\00:26:31.31 Yes, my mother used to tell me the stories 00:26:31.34\00:26:35.42 when I was a kid only 8, 10 years old. 00:26:35.45\00:26:38.51 And during that time, last semester, 00:26:38.54\00:26:44.10 I was going through hard times in my life 00:26:44.13\00:26:46.95 and Miss Demsky came to me 00:26:46.98\00:26:49.28 and she asked me to join her class. 00:26:49.31\00:26:51.89 And as soon as she told me, 00:26:51.92\00:26:55.94 I have some flashbacks from the stories 00:26:55.97\00:26:58.73 that my mom used to tell me. 00:26:58.76\00:27:00.71 And I joined the class and here we are 00:27:00.74\00:27:07.71 reading the stories of the Waldensians 00:27:07.74\00:27:11.04 and suddenly I started feeling in my heart 00:27:11.07\00:27:14.83 that feeling again of becoming a missionary. 00:27:14.86\00:27:18.29 Wanting to be a missionary. 00:27:18.32\00:27:19.41 Wanting to be a missionary. 00:27:19.44\00:27:21.76 And at times we feel that telling our kids 00:27:21.79\00:27:25.68 these types of stories, terrible stories 00:27:25.71\00:27:28.55 would make them afraid 00:27:28.58\00:27:30.86 of going out and share the gospel. 00:27:30.89\00:27:33.90 But it's something mysterious about these stories 00:27:33.93\00:27:38.18 that it burns out in your heart for years 00:27:38.21\00:27:42.29 and instead of making you afraid, 00:27:42.32\00:27:45.84 it actually gives you the courage 00:27:45.87\00:27:48.50 to go and tell someone. 00:27:48.53\00:27:50.32 And here we end up at this cave 00:27:50.35\00:27:53.95 and you come to me before you said, 00:27:53.98\00:27:55.27 pastor, listen, I've got a little something, 00:27:55.30\00:27:56.78 I need to talk to the students 00:27:56.81\00:27:57.84 about 23 of you were in that class. 00:27:57.87\00:27:59.78 Can I have a little time at the end of the communion? 00:27:59.81\00:28:01.79 I said you bet. 00:28:01.82\00:28:03.20 What were you thinking wanting to have that time? 00:28:03.23\00:28:06.16 What was-- What God laid on your heart? 00:28:06.19\00:28:08.53 Well, I always dream to go to this place 00:28:08.56\00:28:13.38 one time in my life and I wanted to be special 00:28:13.41\00:28:17.85 and I wanted to share the same feeling 00:28:17.88\00:28:20.06 for my classmates, so it came to me that 00:28:20.09\00:28:25.90 trying to make something significant 00:28:25.93\00:28:28.92 so they can remember later in their lives. 00:28:28.95\00:28:33.10 I have the idea of getting a box. 00:28:33.13\00:28:35.32 Little lock box. 00:28:35.35\00:28:36.38 A lock box where you put a notebook 00:28:36.41\00:28:39.36 and as soon as we write their names 00:28:39.39\00:28:42.34 in memory or in significance 00:28:42.37\00:28:44.67 as is God is keeping their names in their heart, 00:28:44.70\00:28:48.21 in his heart. 00:28:48.24\00:28:49.65 And also the piece of paper 00:28:49.68\00:28:52.18 where they will write some notes 00:28:52.21\00:28:53.70 and prayers for the next generation. 00:28:53.73\00:28:57.40 The interesting part of the Waldensians 00:28:57.43\00:28:59.96 is that the recent, 00:28:59.99\00:29:01.38 one of the reasons why they died 00:29:01.41\00:29:03.08 is because they wanted to leave a legacy 00:29:03.11\00:29:05.94 for the rest of the world for us. 00:29:05.97\00:29:09.47 So that would be a legacy for other students 00:29:09.50\00:29:13.74 to come for next year. 00:29:13.77\00:29:14.80 Subsequent architectural classes coming. 00:29:14.83\00:29:16.73 In fact, we got a picture. Let's put that on the screen. 00:29:16.76\00:29:19.47 You have us, we left the cave. 00:29:19.50\00:29:21.63 We're all writing there in the light, 00:29:21.66\00:29:23.07 writing prayers or promises or testimonies 00:29:23.10\00:29:26.84 and then we put it in that lock box 00:29:26.87\00:29:29.54 and you and Mrs. D go back into the cave 00:29:29.57\00:29:32.04 'cause the strategy Kathy is that 00:29:32.07\00:29:33.71 you're gonna remember where this is. 00:29:33.74\00:29:35.60 Next year when you bring the next class. 00:29:35.63\00:29:37.23 Now we got a picture I think of you 00:29:37.26\00:29:39.34 uh, Kevin burying that. 00:29:39.37\00:29:40.83 Yup, I hope you can find that. 00:29:40.86\00:29:43.85 I think we can. 00:29:43.88\00:29:44.91 Yeah, because it's the-Kevin, it's passing it on 00:29:44.94\00:29:48.56 to the next class and the next class. 00:29:48.59\00:29:50.25 What we read in Deuteronomy 4. 00:29:50.28\00:29:51.45 Just keep passing it on 00:29:51.48\00:29:52.76 to the next generation and the next generation. 00:29:52.79\00:29:54.45 It's good for you. 00:29:54.48\00:29:55.51 If you let me pastor, uh, you just read a verse. 00:29:55.54\00:29:59.37 In the beginning of your sermon. 00:29:59.40\00:30:01.64 I think we missed one, very important one. 00:30:04.16\00:30:06.53 This is in Hebrews? This is in Hebrews. 00:30:06.56\00:30:07.95 All right. 00:30:07.98\00:30:09.01 Hebrew 11, the last verse of 11. 00:30:09.04\00:30:13.01 Read it for us. 00:30:13.04\00:30:14.07 It's 39, listen, 00:30:14.10\00:30:16.46 "These were all commended for their faith, 00:30:16.49\00:30:21.06 yet none of them received what was 00:30:21.09\00:30:24.10 or what had been promised to them." 00:30:24.13\00:30:27.53 It's very important. 00:30:27.56\00:30:29.05 It says, "God had planned something better for us 00:30:29.08\00:30:33.20 so that only together with them and us... 00:30:33.23\00:30:38.59 Halleluiah. 00:30:38.62\00:30:39.90 "They would be made perfect." 00:30:39.93\00:30:42.23 I believe we are in those times pastor. 00:30:42.26\00:30:45.62 We are that generation to make their sacrifice perfect. 00:30:45.65\00:30:51.86 So it's our time. 00:30:51.89\00:30:53.35 Thank you for that. 00:30:53.38\00:30:55.57 We have music there and of course 00:30:55.60\00:30:58.43 when you celebrate the cross music 00:30:58.46\00:31:00.89 is front and centre. 00:31:00.92\00:31:02.66 We had a makeshift quartet on the spot. 00:31:02.69\00:31:04.84 You guys did great and so I said 00:31:04.87\00:31:06.40 "hey when we do this in church, 00:31:06.43\00:31:08.49 would you sing it in Spanish as you did? 00:31:08.52\00:31:10.50 So guys come on up here. 00:31:10.53\00:31:13.42 This quartet from the School of Architecture singing, 00:31:13.45\00:31:17.66 singing the hymn that was first sung in public 00:31:17.69\00:31:20.52 just a stone throw up poking at road 00:31:20.55\00:31:22.43 in your Andrews University and all of you alumni remember 00:31:22.46\00:31:24.47 which hymn that was "The Old Rugged Cross." 00:31:24.50\00:31:27.51 Sing for us guys, stanza in Spanish 00:31:27.54\00:31:31.62 and then the chorus and then we all are gonna sing 00:31:31.65\00:31:34.77 the chorus again but we'll sing it in English. 00:31:34.80\00:31:36.45 We'll sing it with them. 00:31:36.48\00:31:40.73 So I'll cherish 00:33:02.83\00:33:05.93 The old rugged cross 00:33:05.96\00:33:11.59 Till my trophies at last 00:33:11.62\00:33:15.65 I lay down 00:33:15.68\00:33:19.86 I will cling 00:33:19.89\00:33:22.25 To the old rugged cross 00:33:22.28\00:33:28.99 And exchange it 00:33:29.02\00:33:31.51 Someday for a crown 00:33:31.54\00:33:37.36 Thank you gentlemen. Amen indeed. 00:33:39.87\00:33:42.19 It's a truth of Calvary 00:33:42.22\00:33:43.54 that binds God's community of faith together 00:33:43.57\00:33:45.67 from A.D.31 all the way to the end of times, 00:33:45.70\00:33:49.02 that old rugged cross. 00:33:49.05\00:33:51.73 It is at the heart of this community of faith. 00:33:51.76\00:33:54.53 Thank you, gentleman. And thank you, Kristy. 00:33:54.56\00:33:57.61 And, Kevin, let's go up to our last segment 00:33:57.64\00:34:00.15 because there is one more bit of Waldensian architecture 00:34:00.18\00:34:02.97 that we need to talk about. 00:34:03.00\00:34:04.69 I'm gonna invite Michael, 00:34:04.72\00:34:06.45 you come back up here please and Amanda 00:34:06.48\00:34:10.27 and let' talk, Kathy, about the College of the Barbes. 00:34:10.30\00:34:15.10 Who in the world were they? 00:34:15.13\00:34:16.35 Who in the world? 00:34:16.38\00:34:17.44 They were the pastors or the missionaries actually 00:34:17.47\00:34:21.25 uh, since scripture was totally central 00:34:21.28\00:34:23.59 to their lives they built this little college 00:34:23.62\00:34:26.26 which I think we can see it hopefully. 00:34:26.29\00:34:27.66 Let's put the picture up there, yeah. 00:34:27.69\00:34:30.38 Little stone building 00:34:30.41\00:34:32.86 but think of what happened there. 00:34:32.89\00:34:34.93 They not only memorized scripture, 00:34:34.96\00:34:37.47 the gospels, the epistles, but they copied scripture 00:34:37.50\00:34:40.92 on little pieces of paper and segments, 00:34:40.95\00:34:42.98 they can roll up and hide in their clothing 00:34:43.01\00:34:45.43 as they went out as missionaries by twos. 00:34:45.46\00:34:47.22 In fact we got a picture of that round table 00:34:47.25\00:34:49.57 where you were telling us that is actually 00:34:49.60\00:34:51.58 where they sat and did the transcriptions. 00:34:51.61\00:34:54.69 By candlelight and mostly in the winters. 00:34:54.72\00:34:57.45 So snow is covering the whole. 00:34:57.48\00:34:58.76 Covered the whole. 00:34:58.79\00:34:59.84 Probably covered the whole college. 00:34:59.87\00:35:00.92 It did. 00:35:00.95\00:35:02.03 Kids there and the young adults 00:35:02.06\00:35:03.26 are in there being trained because the objective 00:35:03.29\00:35:07.22 is not to leave them on the mountains site. 00:35:07.25\00:35:08.91 What's the objective? 00:35:08.94\00:35:10.67 Well, they actually, many of them went on to study 00:35:10.70\00:35:13.46 in seminaries of the world, Paris, Lombardi, other schools 00:35:13.49\00:35:17.34 and then they came back to go out by twos 00:35:17.37\00:35:20.47 and they didn't know when they went out. 00:35:20.50\00:35:22.40 They just went for two years at a time. 00:35:22.43\00:35:25.22 They didn't know if they would come back. 00:35:25.25\00:35:26.98 And they went out multi disciplined. 00:35:27.01\00:35:28.27 They went out as merchants. 00:35:28.30\00:35:29.80 They went out as business people 00:35:29.83\00:35:31.57 but inside secret... 00:35:31.60\00:35:33.89 secret undercover as we say missionaries. 00:35:33.92\00:35:37.50 So, Michael, you were there. 00:35:37.53\00:35:38.58 You were at the pinnacle of Castelluzzo, 00:35:38.61\00:35:41.67 we were together in the cave, college. 00:35:41.70\00:35:44.38 I've read your paper. 00:35:44.41\00:35:45.74 You come home, you're thinking about all this. 00:35:45.77\00:35:48.53 What's the spirit doing inside of you? 00:35:48.56\00:35:51.87 Well, basically after seeing these different things 00:35:51.90\00:35:55.15 and also reading the story from the book 00:35:55.18\00:35:57.23 that we read in class. 00:35:57.26\00:36:00.57 It was a moving moment in that. 00:36:00.60\00:36:02.14 It was pushing me to think about 00:36:02.17\00:36:04.70 what was so worthy 00:36:04.73\00:36:06.97 of this people giving their lives away. 00:36:07.00\00:36:08.99 That's our most precious gift. 00:36:09.02\00:36:12.23 What so worthy of that. 00:36:12.26\00:36:13.86 And obviously I came to the conclusion 00:36:13.89\00:36:16.61 that it was the relationship with Christ 00:36:16.64\00:36:19.31 that was worth more than life itself 00:36:19.34\00:36:22.74 and that was powerful and it struck me 00:36:22.77\00:36:25.02 and that is how the relationship 00:36:25.05\00:36:26.26 with Jesus is like. 00:36:26.29\00:36:27.37 It's worth more than lives, 00:36:27.40\00:36:29.71 than our lives and they knew that. 00:36:29.74\00:36:32.44 And that's why they gave up their lives 00:36:32.47\00:36:34.42 for something better. 00:36:34.45\00:36:36.12 Um, powerful, powerful. 00:36:36.15\00:36:39.52 We had vivacious French- Italian guy named Danielle. 00:36:39.55\00:36:44.60 And she sings the songs, Amanda, 00:36:44.63\00:36:46.82 for one of our morning worships. 00:36:46.85\00:36:48.20 She came early 'cause she is gonna take us 00:36:48.23\00:36:49.75 to the next stop wherever. 00:36:49.78\00:36:52.27 I'd only heard that song once in my life before 00:36:52.30\00:36:54.46 and we got the hold of the words. 00:36:54.49\00:36:56.05 Would you sing it for us? The "Border of Red." 00:36:56.08\00:36:58.53 It's a metaphor of martyrdom and there's a stanza. 00:36:58.56\00:37:00.88 You just sing that stanza 00:37:00.91\00:37:01.95 that applies to the Waldensian's story? 00:37:01.98\00:37:04.61 Thank you. 00:37:04.64\00:37:09.18 There's a border of red on his garment 00:37:15.07\00:37:22.53 His robe is a glistening white 00:37:22.56\00:37:29.30 He lives on a street that's called Holy 00:37:29.33\00:37:36.81 His star-studded crown glitters bright 00:37:36.84\00:37:43.93 He walks with the ransomed of ages 00:37:43.96\00:37:50.88 Beloved of all Heaven, it's said 00:37:50.91\00:37:57.36 Why is he so honored in Heaven?
