¤¤ 00:00:00.86\00:00:03.73 >> Dear Father, as You know well, not many of us are 00:00:10.34\00:00:13.24 farmers. Most of us are city slickers, 00:00:13.24\00:00:16.98 which means we're not that familiar with that sweet little 00:00:16.98\00:00:20.82 domesticated creature you chose, for the rest of forever, to 00:00:20.82\00:00:26.02 represent You and Your sacrifice. 00:00:26.02\00:00:29.32 Nevertheless, we've come today to worship the Lamb. Let's talk to Him, and then let's plunge into the 00:21:43.60\00:21:46.74 Word together. O, God, those arms. What's that line in 00:21:46.74\00:21:51.57 Deuteronomy? "Underneath -- Underneath are the everlasting arms." We lean on those arms. 00:21:51.57\00:21:56.85 Where would we be -- Would we even be here were it not for 00:21:56.85\00:22:03.42 Your strong arms? We pray in Christ's name. Amen. Would you agree with this? 00:22:11.49\00:22:18.23 Most everybody who lives on this planet has an address. If I were to ask you, "Where do 00:22:18.23\00:22:25.84 you live?" you would respond, "In Berrien Springs" or "In L.A." or "In Pretoria." 00:22:25.84\00:22:34.78 Most every human being has an address. 00:22:34.95\00:22:37.72 But, listen, there are some people -- no kidding -- there 00:22:37.72\00:22:40.52 are some people who have two addresses and -- get this -- 00:22:40.52\00:22:45.09 they live in both addresses simultaneously. 00:22:45.09\00:22:49.56 Go figure. Open up your Bible to 00:22:49.56\00:22:51.70 Ephesians 1. Take a look at this -- 00:22:51.70\00:22:54.07 Ephesians 1. Let's go. 00:22:54.07\00:22:56.04 I'm in the New International Version this morning. 00:22:56.04\00:22:58.54 Every translation you have, that's just great that you have 00:22:58.54\00:23:00.94 one. Don't have one, pull out the pew 00:23:00.94\00:23:02.51 Bible. 00:23:02.51\00:23:03.45 It's page 786 in the pew Bible. Ephesians 1:1. "Paul, an apostle 00:23:03.61\00:23:10.49 of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to God's holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in 00:23:10.49\00:23:19.13 Christ Jesus." Paul is quite clear, the Christians that he is 00:23:19.13\00:23:22.96 writing to, they live in two places at once -- in Ephesus and 00:23:22.96\00:23:28.10 in Christ. Every Christian... has both addresses... a human address and a divine 00:23:28.10\00:23:36.58 address. And it's in-Christ address, the divine address, 00:23:36.58\00:23:42.48 that captures our attention this morning. There's something compelling about that phrase. 00:23:42.48\00:23:47.39 I would dare to day that it stands among the three most stunning truths in all of 00:23:47.39\00:23:52.66 Scripture. That this truth is critical for Paul -- I'll tell 00:23:52.66\00:23:57.53 you what, he uses this phrase over 200 times -- this phrase or its cognates "in Christ," "in 00:23:57.53\00:24:02.24 Him," "through Christ," "through Him." 00:24:02.24\00:24:04.64 And for our little series #RxF4Now -- have you figured it 00:24:04.81\00:24:13.11 out yet? -- for our series, this is absolutely a very big deal. 00:24:13.11\00:24:18.45 So, without further ado, let's go to our passage for this 00:24:18.45\00:24:21.36 morning -- 2 Corinthians 5. 00:24:21.36\00:24:24.33 2 Corinthians 5. So, you're in Ephesians. Just go back Galatians, and then 00:24:24.49\00:24:28.00 you're into 2 Corinthians. 2 Corinthians. [ Clears throat ] 00:24:28.00\00:24:32.10 2 Corinthians 5. Pick it up at verse 14. "For Christ's love 00:24:32.10\00:24:43.95 compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore --" what? -- all 00:24:43.95\00:24:50.15 died." I don't know if you were at the Steve Green concert on 00:24:50.15\00:24:56.16 Sunday night, but if you were, you know what -- what an experience. I mean, that was -- 00:24:56.16\00:25:00.80 that was worship, maxed out. And he sang his signature song. "Calvary's love, Calvary's love. 00:25:00.80\00:25:06.70 Priceless gift Christ makes us worthy of. The deepest sin can't 00:25:06.70\00:25:11.81 rise above Calvary's love." Paul is singing right now. "For the love of Christ compels 00:25:11.81\00:25:18.51 us." It's very interesting, that little word "compels." 00:25:18.51\00:25:22.58 It's one of Dr. Luke's prime words. He uses it in Luke and in 00:25:22.58\00:25:27.99 Acts. You remember the story about the woman with the hemorrhage -- The woman who's 00:25:27.99\00:25:31.16 been bleeding for like 12 years? Do you remember that story? And she says -- she hears Jesus 00:25:31.16\00:25:34.56 is coming to our little village. He's coming today, so she's going to be out there. 00:25:34.56\00:25:37.83 She's going to ask Him to heal her. But when she goes to where 00:25:37.83\00:25:41.70 she expects Him, there is this massive crowd swirling around 00:25:41.70\00:25:45.74 Him. "I'll never get an audience with Him." And so what does she 00:25:45.74\00:25:49.04 do? She's down on her hands and knees. I picture she's going 00:25:49.04\00:25:51.48 through the -- she's going through the legs, through the legs. "If I can just touch --" 00:25:51.48\00:25:55.05 the what? -- "the hem of His garment, if I can just touch that, I'll be healed." 00:25:55.05\00:26:01.06 And you know the story. Jesus stops. Everybody jostles Him, 00:26:01.06\00:26:07.66 and Jesus turns around and he says rather calmly, "Who touched me?" And Peter -- only in Luke 00:26:07.66\00:26:13.94 -- Peter pipes up as he always does, "Okay, Lord, let's find 00:26:13.94\00:26:17.51 out. Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Okay, who touched Jesus? Put 00:26:17.51\00:26:20.14 your hand up. Admit it." "No, no, no, no, no, no, somebody 00:26:20.14\00:26:23.24 touched me. I felt power go out of me." The word to describe that throttling, that choking, 00:26:23.24\00:26:29.65 pressing crowd is the same word right here. For the love of 00:26:29.65\00:26:35.26 Christ throttles us, for the love of Christ crushes us. It 00:26:35.26\00:26:38.46 surrounds us. You can't get away. Reminds me of the story of the Marine Corps general 00:26:38.46\00:26:43.53 Chesty Puller and the Battle of the Bulge. You ever hear about 00:26:43.53\00:26:46.47 the Battle of the Bulge? That would be World War II. His troops, the Allied troops, 00:26:46.47\00:26:51.37 are surrounded by the enemy. He gets up to make the 00:26:51.37\00:26:54.84 announcement. "Soldiers, the enemy is in front of us, the enemy is behind us, the enemy is 00:26:54.84\00:27:03.05 to our right, the enemy is to our left. I have good news for you. They're not going to get 00:27:03.05\00:27:07.16 away from us this time." Calvary's love -- in front of you, behind you, to the right 00:27:07.16\00:27:13.13 and left. You can't get away from Calvary's love this time. 00:27:13.13\00:27:17.47 Read it again, verse 14. "For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that 00:27:17.47\00:27:23.41 one died for all, and therefore all died." Did you get that? 00:27:23.41\00:27:28.54 When Jesus died on the Cross, all the entire world all died in 00:27:28.54\00:27:36.99 Him -- in Him. One died for all -- the entire human race -- and 00:27:36.99\00:27:41.09 all died in Him. Christ took every sin of yours and mine. He took every sinner, and all 00:27:41.09\00:27:46.13 died in Him. In Him. Drop down to verse 17. 00:27:46.13\00:27:50.27 You might have read this verse before. Verse 17 -- "Therefore, 00:27:50.27\00:27:53.87 if anyone is --" what are the next two words? -- over 200 times, Paul is going to use that 00:27:53.87\00:27:58.91 -- this is his key numero-uno phrase -- "if anyone is in Christ --" any man, any woman, 00:27:58.91\00:28:03.61 any young adult, any teenager, any child -- "if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has 00:28:03.61\00:28:09.42 come: The old has gone and the new is here!" Whatever this "in 00:28:09.42\00:28:16.86 Christ" means, it is crystal clear that when you're in Christ, you become a new 00:28:16.86\00:28:23.33 creation. It reminds me of that grand truth that launched this little #RxF4Now series -- 00:28:23.33\00:28:31.64 "believe." When the Creator of the universe -- when He speaks a word, His word -- get this -- 00:28:31.64\00:28:36.81 His word -- His word is so omnipotent that the moment He speaks the word, the word 00:28:36.81\00:28:41.72 creates the reality it describes. So when he says, "Let 00:28:41.72\00:28:45.52 there be light," in half a nanosecond -- wshoom! -- there is light. When he speaks the 00:28:45.52\00:28:52.19 word. If any man is in Christ, if any woman is in Christ, when he speaks the words, "Behold, 00:28:52.19\00:28:57.53 behold," I do a -- shoo! -- new thing. Boom! 00:28:57.53\00:29:01.30 A new thing has happened. When he speaks the word. If any man, 00:29:01.30\00:29:08.14 if any woman is in Christ in that instant. I'm telling you. This "in Christ" phrase, in my 00:29:08.14\00:29:14.25 humble conviction, this is a deal breaker. This is a deal 00:29:14.25\00:29:20.42 breaker if you get this one. 00:29:20.42\00:29:21.89 But it gets even better. Drop down to verse 19. 00:29:22.06\00:29:24.29 So, Paul is talking about God. This is verse 19. 00:29:24.29\00:29:26.56 And he says "that God was reconciling the world to 00:29:26.56\00:29:31.50 himself" -- here it comes again -- "in Christ." 00:29:31.50\00:29:34.54 Over 200 times. God was in the world reconciling 00:29:34.54\00:29:38.31 to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against 00:29:38.31\00:29:43.04 them. Now watch this. 00:29:43.04\00:29:44.48 Watch this, because most translations read this way. 00:29:44.48\00:29:47.78 "God was in Christ." Four words in the English. In the Greek... 00:29:47.95\00:29:51.82 [ Speaks Greek ] Four words in the Greek. God was in Christ. 00:29:51.82\00:29:59.33 You know what's happening here? The father is in the son. On the 00:29:59.33\00:30:06.67 cross. Oh, it reminds me of these words of Ellen White. Put them on the screen for you. 00:30:06.67\00:30:10.61 From that little classic "Desire of Ages." You see it on the 00:30:10.61\00:30:14.01 screen. God sacrificed himself in Christ for our redemption. But here's the stunner. 00:30:14.01\00:30:22.28 This is from a little magazine called Signs of the Times. On the screen as well. 00:30:22.28\00:30:25.89 God Himself -- God Himself was crucified with Christ. Christ was one with the Father. 00:30:25.89\00:30:32.59 The Father himself was crucified. He was in Christ. 00:30:32.59\00:30:35.63 One more. The apocalyptic classic "Great Controversy" on 00:30:35.63\00:30:39.17 the screen. The love of the Father, no less than the love of 00:30:39.17\00:30:44.07 the son, is the fountain of salvation for the lost race. You know what that means? 00:30:44.07\00:30:49.41 Ladies and gentlemen, you know what that means? When Christ died, when Calvary's 00:30:49.41\00:30:52.98 love poured out of that broken heart, he died. He died as a 00:30:52.98\00:30:57.09 surrogate. Do you know what a surrogate is? Anybody know -- What's the definition of a 00:30:57.09\00:31:02.89 surrogate? Well, the dictionary says a surrogate is a substitute assigned to stand in for someone 00:31:02.89\00:31:08.60 else. As Calvary's love is being poured out, the surrogate 00:31:08.60\00:31:12.23 standing in for the Father, the surrogate is there. The 00:31:12.23\00:31:16.57 surrogate of God. Oh, by the way, the surrogate for the entire human race, the surrogate 00:31:16.57\00:31:21.64 for you and me on Calvary's Cross. What kind of love is this? Love of Christ compels us. 00:31:21.64\00:31:28.82 I mean, can you understand it? And I'll tell you what. The wonder -- The wonder is not 00:31:28.82\00:31:33.69 so much that Jesus died for us. The wonder is he even wanted to. But it gets even better. 00:31:33.69\00:31:41.90 Hop down to verse 21. Wow. God made him -- that would be 00:31:41.90\00:31:47.80 Christ -- God made Christ, who had no sin, to be sin for us, so that -- what are the next two 00:31:47.80\00:31:54.61 words? -- in Him. There it is again. There's that phrase. 00:31:54.61\00:31:57.85 So that in Him we might become the righteousness -- the righteousness of God. 00:31:57.85\00:32:02.72 Hey, hey, what's righteousness mean? Well, we can kind of think 00:32:02.72\00:32:07.06 about righteousness this way. Righteousness is right-doing. That's what it is, right-doing. 00:32:07.06\00:32:13.66 That's why God is 24/7 righteous because He's always doing right, 00:32:13.66\00:32:17.97 24/7. And righteous -- He's only the righteousness in the universe. 24/7, which means -- 00:32:17.97\00:32:24.07 listen to this. When we are in Christ, as we just read, the 00:32:24.07\00:32:29.51 filthy rags of our sins go to him so that the spotless robe of his righteousness gets wrapped 00:32:29.51\00:32:35.92 around us. Can you believe that? He became my sin so that in Him 00:32:35.92\00:32:42.02 I could become his righteousness by faith, which is why there is this old, dusty phrase that 00:32:42.02\00:32:49.16 still gets used now and then. Righteousness by faith. By 00:32:49.16\00:32:56.74 faith. Which means that when I'm in Christ, his perfect life becomes my perfect life. 00:32:56.74\00:33:03.38 Can you believe that? When I'm in Christ, his perfect purity 00:33:03.38\00:33:09.98 becomes my perfect purity. Listen. When I'm in Christ, his 00:33:09.98\00:33:13.62 perfect racial unity -- We have a little conference going on. We're gonna get right back to it 00:33:13.62\00:33:18.89 this afternoon. Should've been here last night. Oh, Michael 00:33:18.89\00:33:23.33 Nixon, wow. You missed that. It's in the youth chapel from 2:00 on through the rest of the 00:33:23.33\00:33:28.24 day. It's called Repairing the Breach, achieving, seeking 00:33:28.24\00:33:32.47 racial unity within the church. When we as a people, when we are in Christ, his perfect unity 00:33:32.47\00:33:39.05 becomes our perfect unity. When I'm in Christ, his honesty becomes my honesty. 00:33:39.05\00:33:43.89 His righteousness becomes my righteousness by faith. You know 00:33:43.89\00:33:48.32 what that means? You know what that means? Put it on the screen for you. I hope this is the one 00:33:48.32\00:33:53.16 line to take home today. All that is His becomes all that is mine when I am in Christ. 00:33:53.16\00:34:02.24 All that is His -- You say, "Oh, Dwight, come on. This is typical 00:34:02.24\00:34:05.61 homiletical hyperbole. You guys are really something." Oh, you 00:34:05.61\00:34:08.51 think so, huh? Let me go back to the Book of Ephesians. You stay right where you are. 00:34:08.51\00:34:11.65 Go back to the Book of Ephesians. Chapter 1, now verse 00:34:11.65\00:34:14.25 3. We'll put it on the screen. A little bit of hyperbole? 00:34:14.25\00:34:17.22 I think not. Read this on the screen. 00:34:17.39\00:34:19.75 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who 00:34:19.75\00:34:23.36 has blessed us in the heavenly realms with -- what's the next 00:34:23.36\00:34:26.93 word? Come on, call it out to me. 00:34:26.93\00:34:29.06 What's the next word? With every spiritual -- what? 00:34:29.06\00:34:32.13 Spiritual what? Blessing. 00:34:32.13\00:34:34.77 All that is His -- When I'm in Christ, all that is His becomes 00:34:34.77\00:34:40.38 all that is mine. 00:34:40.38\00:34:42.21 When I'm in Christ, every spiritual blessing. How much of 00:34:42.38\00:34:49.98 every is every? Do you know? Oh, it's pretty much all? Okay. 00:34:49.98\00:34:54.36 Pretty much all. 00:34:54.36\00:34:56.16 Wow. All that is His becomes all that 00:34:56.32\00:35:02.00 is mine. When you are in Christ. 00:35:02.00\00:35:05.50 And, by the way, oh, don't let anybody kid you. 00:35:05.50\00:35:07.87 It's already a done deal. Been done. 00:35:07.87\00:35:09.80 It's not like you and I come to God and God says, "Oh, yo, 00:35:09.80\00:35:12.64 Dwight Howard. 00:35:12.64\00:35:13.68 Oh, you want to be saved? Hmm, well, let me see. Let me think. 00:35:13.84\00:35:16.98 You know what, Dwight? I need to kind of go over this thing. 00:35:16.98\00:35:20.05 I'll tell you what. I'll call you back. Don't call me. 00:35:20.05\00:35:22.85 I'll call you." Is it that way with God? It is not. 00:35:22.85\00:35:27.72 What did we just read? If any man is in Christ, if any woman is in Christ, just like 00:35:27.72\00:35:33.26 that. Half a nanosecond, you say Jesus, you got it. 00:35:33.26\00:35:36.90 If anyone is in Christ, she, he is a new creation in Christ. All things are gone away. 00:35:36.90\00:35:42.67 Yet all things become new. I'll tell you what, Dwight. I don't 00:35:42.67\00:35:47.91 feel very new. I didn't ask you if you felt new. I don't even 00:35:47.91\00:35:52.25 care about your feelings, and neither does God. The issue is not feelings. It's faith. It's 00:35:52.25\00:35:57.79 faith. It's what Jesus said to the centurion. Remember what 00:35:57.79\00:36:00.66 Jesus said to the centurion? The centurion comes walking up to Jesus and he says, "Listen, 00:36:00.66\00:36:03.56 my servant is dying. I need you to heal him." "Well, I'll go to 00:36:03.56\00:36:06.76 your house." "No, no, no. Stop right there. You don't have to 00:36:06.76\00:36:09.30 come to my house. All you have to do is say the words. 00:36:09.30\00:36:11.30 See, I got servants. I know how it works. I have soldiers under 00:36:11.30\00:36:14.17 me. I just say the word go, and they go. I say come and they 00:36:14.17\00:36:16.87 come. You say the word and my servant will be healed just like that." And Jesus goes, "Wow. 00:36:16.87\00:36:22.81 I've been living around this all my life. I have never seen faith 00:36:22.81\00:36:28.18 like this pagan." Then he says to this pagan, he says, "Let it 00:36:28.18\00:36:35.36 be done to you, according to your feelings." No, he did not. "Let it be done to you according 00:36:35.36\00:36:41.40 to your...faith." That boy was healed just like that. 00:36:41.40\00:36:46.13 I'm telling you what. It's already a done deal. You're a new creation in God's 00:36:46.13\00:36:50.51 eyes. Based on the cross 2,000 years ago, done. 00:36:50.51\00:36:54.41 It is finished. 00:36:54.41\00:36:56.98 I mean, it would be like you getting a FedEx letter. 00:36:57.15\00:37:01.72 You ever get FedEx letters? Yeah. 00:37:01.72\00:37:04.82 UPS? Eh. FedEx. Whoo! 00:37:04.82\00:37:07.02 This is pretty important. 00:37:07.02\00:37:09.26 Right? It's like you getting a FedEx letter from an unknown law 00:37:09.42\00:37:14.30 firm that informs you that your great uncle, whom you knew but never met in your life, your 00:37:14.30\00:37:20.60 great uncle some years ago has died childless, and he has willed to you his entire estate, 00:37:20.60\00:37:28.91 but only now have his lawyers located you. And if you are 00:37:28.91\00:37:36.35 willing to receive this inheritance, if you will just sign the FedEx receipt. 00:37:36.35\00:37:41.49 Come on, just put your John Henry there or Mary Henry. Just 00:37:41.49\00:37:47.93 put it down there. If you are willing to receive this estate, you will be the inheritor of 00:37:47.93\00:38:00.14 $3.3 billion. Sir, sign on the line. This was done a long time ago. You're just finding out 00:38:00.14\00:38:06.51 about it now. That's okay. It's still valid. 00:38:06.51\00:38:08.85 2,000 years ago, ladies and gentlemen, on the cross of Calvary, God took the entire 00:38:08.85\00:38:13.52 treasury of the universe and he emptied it to the last penny in the gift of Christ to the human 00:38:13.52\00:38:20.66 race. 2,000 years ago it was locked, sealed, and ready. 00:38:20.66\00:38:28.14 As soon as we locate you, sign on this little FedEx receipt, and you got it, buddy. 00:38:28.14\00:38:33.61 Wow. All that is His becomes all that is mine when I am, when you 00:38:33.61\00:38:48.99 are in Christ. In very practical terms, Dwight, come on, cut to 00:38:48.99\00:38:53.56 the chase. How does this work? You want it very practical? Let me give it to you very 00:38:53.56\00:38:57.23 simply. The little book "Steps to Christ." 00:38:57.23\00:38:59.57 Oh, is this something. Put it on the screen. "Steps to Christ" 00:38:59.57\00:39:04.34 page 62. Christ lived on earth amid trials and temptations such as we have to meet. 00:39:04.34\00:39:11.95 He lived a sinless life, tempted like as we are yet without sin. He was born with our weaknesses 00:39:11.95\00:39:18.35 thoroughly through him. He died for us, and now he offers to take our sins and give 00:39:18.35\00:39:23.99 us -- there's that 2 Corinthians 5:21 exchange -- and now he offers to give us his 00:39:23.99\00:39:29.53 righteousness if -- okay, you got to sign the FedEx receipt, here it comes -- if you give 00:39:29.53\00:39:35.70 yourself to him, if you accept him as your savior. Come on, 00:39:35.70\00:39:41.34 boy, quit waiting. Just sign the receipt. Sinful as your life may have been, for Christ's sake, 00:39:41.34\00:39:46.55 you are accounted righteous. Here, this gets even better. Come on, keep reading. 00:39:46.55\00:39:50.82 Christ's character stands in place of your character -- and hold on to your pew -- you are 00:39:50.82\00:39:56.02 accepted before God just as if you had not sinned. Zero sin in 00:39:56.02\00:40:04.07 your life. Now, can it get any better than that? Help me out. 00:40:04.07\00:40:09.24 Can it get any better than that? All that is His is all that is 00:40:09.24\00:40:16.68 yours in Christ. 200 times -- "In Christ, in Christ, in Christ." "We get it, Paul! We 00:40:16.68\00:40:20.42 get it! We get it." You know why? You know why this is true? 00:40:20.42\00:40:24.12 Because you have a new address. You don't live just in Berrien Springs -- you live in 00:40:24.12\00:40:29.79 Christ. We have a new address, and that divine address declares 00:40:29.79\00:40:33.83 that, when God sees you, He sees Jesus. He sees Jesus your 00:40:33.83\00:40:37.97 Savior. He sees Jesus your surrogate. He sees Jesus your substitute. But there's a little 00:40:37.97\00:40:44.07 bit of wrong -- kind of crazy thinking associated with that imagery, and so we need to 00:40:44.07\00:40:48.51 correct it right now. And Cameron Schofield makes a small but very significant 00:40:48.51\00:40:54.12 tweaking to that picture we've all grown up with, and it's very 00:40:54.12\00:40:57.92 helpful. I'll put Cameron's words on the screen. 00:40:57.92\00:41:00.32 This is from his book, "Heralding the Loud Cry." 00:41:00.49\00:41:02.59 "We often --" Oh, is this true or what? 00:41:02.59\00:41:05.63 "We often have a picture in our mind of Christ standing before 00:41:05.63\00:41:08.60 the Father as our high priest and advocate. 00:41:08.60\00:41:10.77 And then there's --" little old me -- right, about so about 10, 00:41:10.77\00:41:13.77 12 feet tall, and I'm down here 4 feet tall. 00:41:13.77\00:41:16.00 There's little old me, trembling, standing behind him, 00:41:16.00\00:41:20.91 as Jesus, the high priest and advocate, pleads with the 00:41:20.91\00:41:24.08 Father. "He's there supplicating --" 00:41:24.08\00:41:26.28 Cameron right now -- "He's there supplicating on my behalf." 00:41:26.28\00:41:30.49 "Oh, Father. [ Chuckles ] I know, I know. 00:41:30.49\00:41:32.62 I know Dwight. Ouf. I..." "Hey, forget it, forget it. 00:41:32.62\00:41:35.99 Look at me, look at me, look at me! 00:41:35.99\00:41:37.46 Please, don't worry about him. Take me!" 00:41:37.46\00:41:40.80 We think that, and Cameron says, "Time-out, time-out. 00:41:40.80\00:41:43.50 Reality check. Friends --" You see that line 00:41:43.50\00:41:45.83 there? "Friends, there is only one man 00:41:45.83\00:41:49.04 standing before God!" Jesus Christ is that man, and we 00:41:49.04\00:41:53.48 are -- Where are we? "We are in him!" 00:41:53.48\00:41:58.21 You have a divine address. You don't have to be up there. You don't have to be standing up 00:41:58.38\00:42:03.15 there in all your little weak and frail human reality. No, we 00:42:03.15\00:42:10.76 are in Christ. By the way, don't be fooled by some aberrant theology into thinking that 00:42:10.76\00:42:17.80 Jesus somehow has to persuade the Father to love you. We know 00:42:17.80\00:42:22.24 that's not true. We just read it in verse 19. God was in Christ at the cross. The Father was 00:42:22.24\00:42:29.18 there, was crucified with His Son. Calvary's love -- Ah, put 00:42:29.18\00:42:34.48 it up, Romans 5:8. Oh, Paul says, "You need to get this..." 00:42:34.48\00:42:37.15 In Christ. I mean, can you believe it? What a glorious 00:42:45.76\00:42:51.33 piece to this #RxF4Now puzzle we're putting together. "Yeah, but, Dwight, come on, 00:42:51.33\00:43:00.34 come on, come on. Help me out. How can I get in Christ right 00:43:00.34\00:43:03.38 now? I need to get in Christ right now." 00:43:03.38\00:43:05.58 Oh, Jesus says, "I'm very glad you asked that question. Let me answer that myself." 00:43:05.58\00:43:09.28 Jesus answers this -- red letters now. You will look this 00:43:09.28\00:43:12.49 text up. John chapter six, please. John chapter six. Red letters in my Bible. 00:43:12.49\00:43:16.52 Jesus has the answer. You want to be in Christ, let me give you 00:43:16.52\00:43:22.06 the way. John 6:56 -- bright red in my Bible. Jesus speaking -- 00:43:22.06\00:43:30.67 "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me --" there's that "in Christ --" 00:43:30.67\00:43:39.38 "remains in me and I in --" her, I in him, I in them. Jesus says, "Lookit, you want to 00:43:39.38\00:43:50.03 be in me, eat my flesh, drink my blood." And that feels so gory, 00:43:50.03\00:43:55.33 and the fact that you have verse 60 indicates we would not be the only ones who says that is yuck. 00:43:55.33\00:44:01.17 Look at verse 60. "On hearing it, many of his disciples said, 00:44:01.17\00:44:05.54 'This is a hard teaching? Who can accept it?'" "Adios, seņor," 00:44:05.54\00:44:09.34 and they are gone. It is gory if you miss the point. 00:44:09.34\00:44:14.85 What's Jesus talking about here? Oh, Jesus is referring to the powerful symbolism of the 00:44:14.85\00:44:20.76 Lord's Supper. You see, there is no Lord's Supper in the Gospel 00:44:20.76\00:44:25.43 of John. The fourth Gospel, there's no Lord's Supper. 00:44:25.43\00:44:28.33 Matthew, Mark, and Luke -- yep, Lord's Supper. John writes it 00:44:28.33\00:44:31.53 years after the Synoptics, and so John comes along and says, "You know what? We've already 00:44:31.53\00:44:35.30 got three stories. Why do you need a fourth story? I'm gonna take the Lord's Supper, and I'm 00:44:35.30\00:44:39.47 gonna embed its powerful symbolism in my 'I am the bread of life' chapter, chapter six." 00:44:39.47\00:44:44.38 And that's exactly what happened. Look at verse 51. 00:44:44.38\00:44:48.12 Jesus still speaking... 00:44:48.28\00:44:49.72 "You want to be in me, then eat the bread, drink the cup. 00:45:00.43\00:45:04.53 And in that way, you will abide in me and I will abide in 00:45:04.53\00:45:07.84 you." 00:45:07.84\00:45:08.74 Hey, listen, ladies and gentlemen, when we celebrate the Lord's Supper, we physically, we 00:45:08.90\00:45:13.98 symbolically become one with the Savior. We are ingested in. 00:45:13.98\00:45:21.08 He is ingested in. When you eat the bread and drink the cup, you 00:45:21.08\00:45:27.89 are invited in to Christ and he is invited in to you. In fact, right after he gave the 00:45:27.89\00:45:31.53 Lord's Supper -- in John's account, now, no Lord's Supper, but he does say the words right 00:45:31.53\00:45:35.16 after the Lord's Supper, "Abide in me, and I in you." That's the 00:45:35.16\00:45:42.17 whole point. You want to be in Christ? You want to stay in Christ? Eat the bread. Drink the 00:45:42.17\00:45:53.78 cup. Let him come in. You go in to him, and you are never ever 00:45:53.78\00:46:02.76 the same again -- ever. Every single time, you're never the 00:46:02.76\00:46:11.13 same again. When my dad died, my mother insisted that us boys take some of his clothes. 00:46:11.13\00:46:20.08 So I chose Dad's pilot sweater and his flight jumpsuit. My dad loved to fly, and, in his 00:46:20.08\00:46:27.82 retirement, he was a chaplain with the Civil Air Patrol. I know that today he is sleeping 00:46:27.82\00:46:37.33 in Jesus. I understand that. 00:46:37.33\00:46:40.06 I know that he is quietly awaiting the resurrection and 00:46:40.23\00:46:44.90 the life, but I have got to tell you, when you put on the clothes 00:46:44.90\00:46:51.51 of someone you love, someone who loved you dearly -- when you put 00:46:51.51\00:46:58.68 on the clothes, in a existential way, it's as if you can almost 00:46:58.68\00:47:05.22 smell him. He's here. He's here. 00:47:05.22\00:47:10.79 And when we take the bread and when we take the cup, I know 00:47:10.96\00:47:19.40 he's not here. I know. But in a mysterious sort of way, it's as 00:47:19.40\00:47:25.37 if he's here. You can almost smell him. The robe goes around you, and you could've sworn 00:47:25.37\00:47:33.28 those were his arms going around you. That's why. "You want to 00:47:33.28\00:47:41.02 abide in me? You want me to abide in you? Eat the bread. Drink the cup. I in you, and you 00:47:41.02\00:47:56.87 in me." Wow. I don't think it gets any better than that, do 00:47:56.87\00:48:01.48 you? Let's pray. Oh, God. Can You believe it? Over 200 times, 00:48:01.48\00:48:10.49 and we've missed this? In Christ. In Christ. In Christ. All that is his is all that is 00:48:10.49\00:48:16.96 mine in Christ. Oh, God, thank You. Calvary's love -- what else 00:48:16.96\00:48:25.47 can we say? Thank you, thank you, thank you. In Jesus' name, 00:48:25.47\00:48:34.01 amen. [ Song ends ] 00:52:05.69\00:52:07.19 [ Organ playing softly ] 00:52:11.29\00:52:13.23 >> As Dwayne just prayed a moment ago, he said, "God, set the table, and make sure there's 00:52:46.93\00:52:51.43 food for everyone," and there is. Ushers are making sure that 00:52:51.43\00:52:57.07 everybody here receives this. And, you know, it would not be out of place had Christ, at that 00:52:57.07\00:53:07.78 upper-room table, had he turned to his disciples and he said, "Look, this is my body. 00:53:07.78\00:53:16.62 This is my blood. If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, I will 00:53:16.62\00:53:25.73 abide in you, and you will abide in me." Today we do that. His body and his blood. 00:53:25.73\00:53:32.34 And so we're gonna do it together. We'll eat the bread 00:53:32.34\00:53:36.21 and drink the cup together. And we do it, as he said, "In remembrance of me." 00:53:36.21\00:53:45.02 Let us partake. 00:53:45.02\00:53:46.49 [ Organ playing softly ] 00:53:55.33\00:53:57.33 So, in Christ -- in Christ -- we go forth together in Christ. Go 00:54:13.25\00:54:21.29 with joy. We're gonna sing a hymn as they did in the upper room. Hymn 407 in the hymnal. 00:54:21.29\00:54:25.06 We're gonna stand together as we sing and are sent forth into the 00:54:25.06\00:54:30.67 world for Christ. [ "Sent Forth by God's Blessing" plays ] 00:54:30.67\00:54:33.57 [ Congregation sings ] 00:54:43.58\00:54:44.98 [ Song ends ] "And now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:56:34.62\00:56:40.03 and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen." 00:56:40.03\00:56:46.77 [ Organ playing softly ] 00:56:46.77\00:56:48.47 >> I want to take an extra moment with you to tell you about something we're really 00:57:00.48\00:57:03.49 excited about.
