Be seated please. 00:19:28.04\00:19:32.31 Oh, "How Great God is," amen and amen. 00:19:32.34\00:19:38.23 I want to you ask the permission of those of you 00:19:41.33\00:19:44.27 who are visiting here maybe for the first time 00:19:44.30\00:19:46.07 or just visiting we're glad to have you 00:19:46.10\00:19:48.23 but I need your permission to just have 00:19:48.26\00:19:50.65 a little family moment with the congregation here 00:19:50.68\00:19:53.41 we've been away for a six weeks. 00:19:53.44\00:19:56.22 I want to share a series of three little snapshots. 00:19:56.25\00:19:58.12 Let's just do this 00:19:58.15\00:19:59.73 and it's the third snapshot that will all get into 00:19:59.76\00:20:03.00 but let me just put the first snapshot 00:20:03.03\00:20:05.18 by a way of a testimony "How Great God Is." 00:20:05.21\00:20:07.71 These are little end of summer testimonies to God's goodness, 00:20:07.74\00:20:11.89 that's-- that's the manuscript that's 366 pages of a manuscript 00:20:11.92\00:20:17.40 and I want to thank this congregation 00:20:17.43\00:20:19.00 for your faithful prayer partnership in praying me 00:20:19.03\00:20:25.07 through the finishing of that manuscript 00:20:25.10\00:20:28.71 for devotional book coming out in a while. 00:20:28.74\00:20:33.83 One page for everyday it will come out on a leap year 00:20:33.86\00:20:37.10 and the years actually it's 2012 00:20:37.13\00:20:38.69 we will have forgotten the book by them but that's okay. 00:20:38.72\00:20:41.57 Book is due January 1, 2010 00:20:41.60\00:20:44.54 and so I knew that after December there will be no way 00:20:44.57\00:20:46.48 we could do anymore work on it 00:20:46.51\00:20:48.10 and so thank you for your-- your prayer partnership. 00:20:48.13\00:20:54.10 You know, there were times because you were praying it 00:20:54.13\00:20:58.45 just was a sense that God even gets into the writing process 00:20:58.48\00:21:03.04 that I just want to say, "How Great God Is." 00:21:03.07\00:21:05.42 So thank you very much, title of the book, 00:21:05.45\00:21:07.81 I think the Review and Herald Publishing Association 00:21:07.84\00:21:09.41 has coming out with the book 00:21:09.44\00:21:10.47 and they have to send it through all these committees 00:21:10.50\00:21:11.90 and you know and then book will gone say, I think in 2011. 00:21:11.93\00:21:17.60 But the title of book its been chosen is, "The Chosen." 00:21:17.63\00:21:21.38 It's a theological and spiritual profile of God's 00:21:21.41\00:21:23.86 last generation on earth and it has-- 00:21:23.89\00:21:26.06 I hope it will be a very practical 00:21:26.09\00:21:28.23 how to component to the book 00:21:28.26\00:21:30.31 that will be helpful I'm praying. 00:21:30.34\00:21:32.34 So God is good and thank you again for your-- 00:21:32.37\00:21:35.61 your prayer partnership. 00:21:35.64\00:21:36.86 All right snapshot number two let me put that up 00:21:36.89\00:21:39.07 because it's a one more family moment here 00:21:39.10\00:21:40.83 we can put that on the screen. 00:21:40.86\00:21:42.47 That's a picture of our brand new daughter-in-law, 00:21:42.50\00:21:45.80 Chelsea Knowlton Nelson. 00:21:45.83\00:21:47.08 That's a picture of Kirk 00:21:47.11\00:21:48.63 and Chelsea just two Sundays ago 00:21:48.66\00:21:51.51 in the beautiful state of Vermont they God married 00:21:51.54\00:21:54.87 and they we're so excited to have another family member 00:21:54.90\00:21:57.36 in our tribe, Chelsea's dad is an OB/GYN over there. 00:21:57.39\00:22:00.43 They lived for years in Vermont. 00:22:00.46\00:22:03.25 And so their family planned for the wedding 00:22:03.28\00:22:05.49 to take place on Lake Champlain, 00:22:05.52\00:22:07.78 which is Lake between New York and Vermont 00:22:07.81\00:22:11.17 and a little dinner cruise ship it took place. 00:22:11.20\00:22:14.24 You know it's pouring down rain 00:22:14.27\00:22:15.56 just as we're getting ready to start 00:22:15.59\00:22:17.45 and then God just at that last moment lifted-- 00:22:17.48\00:22:20.90 lifted the clouds and we had a beautiful sunset. 00:22:20.93\00:22:22.98 They got sunset on that little ship. 00:22:23.01\00:22:26.95 And so let me just show you one more picture 00:22:26.98\00:22:28.62 because those are our kids. 00:22:28.65\00:22:30.51 Here they are, that's Christian, 00:22:30.54\00:22:32.26 Andrews you know Andrews medical 00:22:32.29\00:22:33.70 with the US army range is as down at Fort Knox. 00:22:33.73\00:22:35.75 And I want you count that's one, two, three, four 00:22:35.78\00:22:37.89 because I'm looking for the day 00:22:37.92\00:22:38.96 when that picture will become five and six. 00:22:38.99\00:22:42.87 I'm figuring probably go up to 20 00:22:42.90\00:22:44.69 and so you see my kids you let them know. 00:22:44.72\00:22:49.87 But you know thank it 00:22:49.90\00:22:50.93 because I know congregations pray 00:22:50.96\00:22:52.52 especially for all the pastor's kids that are on the staff. 00:22:52.55\00:22:56.03 And thank you for all the prayers, 00:22:56.06\00:22:57.09 you've prayed for all the children 00:22:57.12\00:22:58.81 on our pastoral staff here 00:22:58.84\00:23:00.02 for what you've done for us, thank you. 00:23:00.05\00:23:01.70 "How great God is", halleluiah. 00:23:01.73\00:23:03.99 Now-- now you can come in, you visitors join us now. 00:23:04.02\00:23:08.33 Because I want to show a picture in a moment, 00:23:08.36\00:23:11.66 that would be of not the tallest mountain in Europe 00:23:11.69\00:23:16.53 it's not the tallest but it is a more treacherous 00:23:16.56\00:23:19.54 and challenging mountain 00:23:19.57\00:23:21.00 to be climbed even today in Europe. 00:23:21.03\00:23:24.08 When we were over in with the skill of architecture, 00:23:24.11\00:23:27.06 back in June in Italy for the Waldensians 00:23:27.09\00:23:30.27 where they were shooting a documentary over there 00:23:30.30\00:23:32.51 with Cathy Dempsey. 00:23:32.54\00:23:33.99 After it was over we slipped up to Switzerland 00:23:34.02\00:23:37.14 because we want to celebrate Karen and I 00:23:37.17\00:23:38.91 our 35th anniversary. 00:23:38.94\00:23:40.74 And so we found a little place there 00:23:40.77\00:23:42.52 did it all online you know 00:23:42.55\00:23:44.37 and when we woke up the first morning 00:23:44.40\00:23:46.16 I want you to see the picture 00:23:46.19\00:23:47.77 out of that little tiny apartment 00:23:47.80\00:23:49.23 in the village of Grindelwald, Switzerland. 00:23:49.26\00:23:51.98 You're looking there ladies and gentlemen, that is Eiger. 00:23:52.01\00:23:54.95 They don't even call it Mount Eiger it's just Eiger. 00:23:54.98\00:23:59.51 13,042 feet tallest so it's not the tallest. 00:23:59.54\00:24:04.42 But you see-- you see the front of it, 00:24:04.45\00:24:06.51 that is a 5,000 foot vertical face. 00:24:06.54\00:24:11.63 It was not conquered for decades. 00:24:11.66\00:24:15.11 Fertility after fertility of men intrepid men 00:24:15.14\00:24:18.98 wanting to go up that vertical face. 00:24:19.01\00:24:21.88 The first successful climb and I found all of these out 00:24:21.91\00:24:25.01 in a little village bookstore, 00:24:25.04\00:24:26.43 I brought a book call "The White Spider." 00:24:26.46\00:24:29.48 Because "The White Spider" is the nick name 00:24:29.51\00:24:31.89 they've given Eiger. 00:24:31.92\00:24:33.14 If you look up on that close up now 00:24:33.17\00:24:35.72 there is patch of vertical ice and snow 00:24:35.75\00:24:38.62 you have to traverse it to go to the summit. 00:24:38.65\00:24:42.09 And it is a deadly patch because in the summer 00:24:42.12\00:24:45.56 because you wouldn't climb it in the winter 00:24:45.59\00:24:47.26 in the summer even the melting of the sun 00:24:47.29\00:24:50.05 releases little particles of ice and snow 00:24:50.08\00:24:53.79 that become projectiles and missiles 00:24:53.82\00:24:57.33 and by the time you get to this white spider patch, 00:24:57.36\00:25:01.85 you just have to pray 00:25:01.88\00:25:03.41 that you will make it across that patch 00:25:03.44\00:25:05.53 without being striker. 00:25:05.56\00:25:06.83 Many plunge to their death 00:25:06.86\00:25:08.51 because of the falling projectiles. 00:25:08.54\00:25:10.83 This is a story the first successful ascent July 21 00:25:10.86\00:25:13.91 to July 24, 1938 by Heinrich Harrer the part-- 00:25:13.94\00:25:18.28 they were six starting only four made it to the summit. 00:25:18.31\00:25:21.73 So it gives you an idea 00:25:21.76\00:25:23.37 of the magnitude to that challenge. 00:25:23.40\00:25:25.10 Now why talk about the "White Spider" at all, 00:25:25.13\00:25:26.79 here is why? 00:25:26.82\00:25:28.07 Because it occurs to me at this moment 00:25:28.10\00:25:29.87 in this waning movement of this summer, 00:25:29.90\00:25:32.52 there are massive white spiders 00:25:32.55\00:25:35.58 towering in front of our civilization and our nation. 00:25:35.61\00:25:39.15 This crazy economy that we were talking about when we left, 00:25:39.18\00:25:43.06 nothing is changed that little whistling by the cemetery 00:25:43.09\00:25:46.35 in the dark business of it's all okay now 00:25:46.38\00:25:48.83 don't believe the whistles. 00:25:48.86\00:25:52.93 This economy, this whole thing with the healthcare 00:25:52.96\00:25:56.09 debate, I mean, you're following all that. 00:25:56.12\00:25:58.08 Afghanistan we have these massive white spiders today, 00:25:58.11\00:26:02.08 that impeding the progress 00:26:02.11\00:26:03.55 but here is deal about a mountain, 00:26:03.58\00:26:05.94 you can either go up it or you can go back, 00:26:05.97\00:26:08.16 you can't go around it. 00:26:08.19\00:26:10.26 The white spiders that faced the human race 00:26:10.29\00:26:12.41 are gonna have to be ascended somehow 00:26:12.44\00:26:14.25 and by the way flip it over, forgot-- 00:26:14.28\00:26:16.66 forget the global white spiders. 00:26:16.69\00:26:18.83 We all have our personal white spiders, 00:26:18.86\00:26:21.51 we have these looming, towering mount financial peaks 00:26:21.54\00:26:25.98 that are blocking us right now, 00:26:26.01\00:26:27.77 I'll never be able to make it to that top, 00:26:27.80\00:26:30.12 we have physical summits. 00:26:30.15\00:26:32.06 I'm talking about our health. 00:26:32.09\00:26:33.50 We've got emotional, we have social, 00:26:33.53\00:26:37.75 we have academic mountains, somebody you're freshman 00:26:37.78\00:26:40.76 just come into this campus we are so excited to have you. 00:26:40.79\00:26:44.42 God has led you here 00:26:44.45\00:26:45.80 and you're in front of incredible event year 00:26:45.83\00:26:47.46 but some of view with feeling like a 00:26:47.49\00:26:49.12 massive white spider right now. 00:26:49.15\00:26:51.05 There is no way I can get through this. 00:26:51.08\00:26:52.94 Oh, you can. 00:26:52.97\00:26:55.16 It's because we all had and face our white spiders 00:26:55.19\00:26:58.44 that we're beginning today at little, 00:26:58.47\00:26:59.88 mini little two patter, call lessons from the "White Spider" 00:26:59.91\00:27:04.39 two mountain climbing stories from the Old Testament, 00:27:04.42\00:27:07.47 today and next Sabbath 00:27:07.50\00:27:09.11 and then we plunged into a new school 00:27:09.14\00:27:10.60 because everybody will be back. 00:27:10.63\00:27:13.63 Two stories with fresh hope and courage, 00:27:13.66\00:27:16.91 don't want you to be discouraged. 00:27:16.94\00:27:18.97 Either go up or you go back and God says 00:27:19.00\00:27:21.02 I'm not let you go back you've got to go up, 00:27:21.05\00:27:23.68 we'll climb this, we'll make it by God's grace. 00:27:23.71\00:27:27.17 Story number one today, 00:27:27.20\00:27:29.67 I wish we can put an 85 year-old-man right here. 00:27:29.70\00:27:32.62 Is there anybody here who is man and who is 85 years old. 00:27:32.65\00:27:35.77 I promise I will not make come up on this platform but 00:27:35.80\00:27:40.34 I kind of visualize what an 85 man would-- 00:27:40.37\00:27:43.21 85 year old man would look like today. 00:27:43.24\00:27:45.39 Anybody proud to be 85? 00:27:45.42\00:27:47.70 You're not so proud, are you? 00:27:47.73\00:27:51.55 We had some put their hands up in first church. 00:27:51.58\00:27:53.85 If we can 85 year old man right here 00:27:53.88\00:27:56.23 by the way is 85 young? 00:27:56.26\00:27:59.99 No, it's not young. 00:28:00.02\00:28:01.40 Is it old? 00:28:01.43\00:28:02.74 Oh, I don't know that we say so why we just agree 00:28:02.77\00:28:05.13 its middle age, middle age, all right. 00:28:05.16\00:28:07.93 If we can put an 85 year old man right here, 00:28:07.96\00:28:10.86 we could then begin to visualize the story 00:28:10.89\00:28:13.08 that's about to unfold. 00:28:13.11\00:28:14.17 His name meant Dog. 00:28:14.20\00:28:15.57 Now I know that in Roman culture that's not a very, 00:28:15.60\00:28:17.75 that's not a very complementary kind of name, 00:28:17.78\00:28:20.24 you call somebody a dog. 00:28:20.27\00:28:22.68 And yet he's one of the greatest unsung heroes 00:28:22.71\00:28:26.63 in the entire Old Testament. 00:28:26.66\00:28:28.42 When he's comes on the scene in our story today, 00:28:28.45\00:28:30.71 he's 85 years old, subtract 40 00:28:30.74\00:28:33.90 he would have been subtract 45 rather 00:28:33.93\00:28:36.52 that would I made him 40 those number are important 00:28:36.55\00:28:40.02 as you see as we open up the Bibles right now. 00:28:40.05\00:28:41.86 Let's go to the story without any further delay. 00:28:41.89\00:28:44.15 The sixth book of the Bible Joshua, 00:28:44.18\00:28:46.27 go to the Book at Joshua, find Joshua Chapter 14 please. 00:28:46.30\00:28:51.72 By the way I've be in the new International Version today, 00:28:51.75\00:28:54.23 if you didn't bring a Bible, oh, please find-- 00:28:54.26\00:28:57.35 find the pew Bible right in front of you, 00:28:57.38\00:29:00.34 it'll be the New King James Version 00:29:00.37\00:29:01.70 not too much difference. 00:29:01.73\00:29:03.19 I'm thinking though I'm gonna be preaching 00:29:03.22\00:29:04.46 in the NIV again this fall. 00:29:04.49\00:29:07.43 I'm getting my New King James rebound 00:29:07.46\00:29:11.04 because the cover just tore apart. 00:29:11.07\00:29:12.91 By the way I have a woman that I know 00:29:12.94\00:29:15.25 if you have a Bible that needs to be recovered 00:29:15.28\00:29:17.18 you just get all to me you're watching on television, 00:29:17.21\00:29:19.36 you get hold of us that I'll give you a phone number 00:29:19.39\00:29:21.05 and you can get it done. 00:29:21.08\00:29:22.11 She did this one and did a beautiful, beautiful job. 00:29:22.14\00:29:24.74 So this is-- in the pew Bible that's, 00:29:24.77\00:29:26.16 we page 159 Joshua Chapter 14, 00:29:26.19\00:29:30.91 Joshua Chapter 14. 00:29:30.94\00:29:33.90 Lessons from the "White Spider" 00:29:33.93\00:29:36.50 the story of man name the Dog. 00:29:36.53\00:29:38.88 Joshua Chapter 14 let's pick it up in verse 6. 00:29:38.91\00:29:44.17 Joshua 14:6, "Now the men of Judah 00:29:44.20\00:29:46.83 approached Joshua at Gilgal, 00:29:46.86\00:29:49.21 and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him," 00:29:49.24\00:29:53.72 hit the pause button right there, 00:29:53.75\00:29:55.02 he said to him but hold it right there. 00:29:55.05\00:29:57.13 We need to sense of what's happening in the story. 00:29:57.16\00:29:59.69 For five years now the children of Israel 00:29:59.72\00:30:05.65 now we used to sing this is kids in Sabbath school. 00:30:05.68\00:30:07.23 Didn't we sing a song about 00:30:07.26\00:30:08.63 the Walls of Jericho came tumbling down, 00:30:08.66\00:30:10.53 was isn't a some kind of a song like that, 00:30:10.56\00:30:11.78 the Walls of Jericho came tumbling down. 00:30:11.81\00:30:13.75 It's been five years since Jericho collapsed 00:30:13.78\00:30:16.67 and they conquered the first city of the new Promised Land. 00:30:16.70\00:30:19.99 I wish the story where win, win, win, win, win, win, win 00:30:20.02\00:30:22.37 but the story goes like win, win, loss 00:30:22.40\00:30:24.41 and it was bitter loss win, win, win. 00:30:24.44\00:30:27.81 It's all another story 00:30:27.84\00:30:28.87 in that bitter loss and the tragic lesson 00:30:28.90\00:30:30.82 they had to learn in the hard way. 00:30:30.85\00:30:32.65 But five years now they-- they've been-- 00:30:32.68\00:30:34.28 they've been conquering piece by piece 00:30:34.31\00:30:36.03 until most-- most of Canon now 00:30:36.06\00:30:38.61 is ready to become the Promised Land 00:30:38.64\00:30:40.62 that God has given to the children of Israel. 00:30:40.65\00:30:42.53 That's when the story happens here 00:30:42.56\00:30:44.48 and these men of Judah approached. 00:30:44.51\00:30:45.94 Verse 6 again, "Now the men of Judah approached Joshua 00:30:45.97\00:30:48.28 at Gilgal, and Caleb" whose name means "dog" 00:30:48.31\00:30:53.10 there he is right there, Caleb 00:30:53.13\00:30:55.32 "and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to Joshua," 00:30:55.35\00:30:59.95 I need to tell you hold, hold just a moment. 00:30:59.98\00:31:01.86 Kenizzite listen it, this is fascinating, 00:31:01.89\00:31:04.66 scholars believe some do, 00:31:04.69\00:31:07.02 the Caleb was a descended of Kenaz the grandson of Issa. 00:31:07.05\00:31:12.29 So the children of Israel all descendents of Jacob 00:31:12.32\00:31:14.56 so he's almost like a distant cousin all right? 00:31:14.59\00:31:17.59 Grandson of-- a grandson of Issa 00:31:17.62\00:31:19.45 and the Caleb was a proselyte one of the mix multitude 00:31:19.48\00:31:23.86 who join the children of Israel 00:31:23.89\00:31:25.53 in that midnight flight the Exodus from Egypt, 00:31:25.56\00:31:30.38 which is probably a shirt tail cousin of Moses 00:31:30.41\00:31:33.16 who is related to the Canaanites. 00:31:33.19\00:31:35.93 So isn't that something, he is part of the mix multitude 00:31:35.96\00:31:39.51 who became a radical believer, his name Metdog. 00:31:39.54\00:31:43.53 Caleb starts to speak here in verse 6, he says to Joshua, 00:31:43.56\00:31:49.68 ''You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God 00:31:49.71\00:31:53.00 at Kadesh Barnea about you and me." 00:31:53.03\00:31:56.16 Because there is something very special about 00:31:56.19\00:31:57.59 Caleb and Joshua. 00:31:57.62\00:31:59.62 Kadesh Barnea by the way code words, 00:31:59.65\00:32:01.57 code words for the more meltdown. 00:32:01.60\00:32:04.04 Do you think God planned on Israel 00:32:04.07\00:32:05.24 taken 40 years to conquer, 00:32:05.27\00:32:08.32 the wilderness between them in the Promised Land. 00:32:08.35\00:32:10.87 You're kidding he wanted to be a matter of months. 00:32:10.90\00:32:13.21 Remember the story, 12 spies go in 10 spies comeback. 00:32:13.24\00:32:17.02 Massive walls no way 00:32:17.05\00:32:18.57 hosay we can never take this land two spies spoke up. 00:32:18.60\00:32:22.45 And then God made a promise all right. 00:32:22.48\00:32:26.11 Everybody in the age of 20, 00:32:26.14\00:32:28.89 you're not going in only these two. 00:32:28.92\00:32:31.50 So Caleb is reminding Joshua, 00:32:31.53\00:32:33.35 you and I, we're the only ones living left, 00:32:33.38\00:32:37.31 Caleb says to Joshua now you know 00:32:37.34\00:32:38.64 what the Lord say to Moses the man of God 00:32:38.67\00:32:40.26 at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 00:32:40.29\00:32:41.76 ''I was forty years old 00:32:41.79\00:32:42.82 when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me 00:32:42.85\00:32:44.34 from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. 00:32:44.37\00:32:46.37 And I brought him back a report according to my convictions 00:32:46.40\00:32:49.22 but" verse 8, "my brothers who went up with me 00:32:49.25\00:32:51.16 made the hearts of the people melt with fear. 00:32:51.19\00:32:53.38 I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. 00:32:53.41\00:32:56.37 So," verse 9, "on that day Moses swore to me, 00:32:56.40\00:32:59.24 you heard it Joshua, 00:32:59.27\00:33:00.62 ''The land on which your feet 00:33:00.65\00:33:02.49 Caleb have walked will be your inheritance 00:33:02.52\00:33:04.99 and that of your children forever, 00:33:05.02\00:33:06.58 because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.' 00:33:06.61\00:33:10.40 Now then, just as the Lord promised," I love this, 00:33:10.43\00:33:14.17 "he has kept me alive for forty-five years 00:33:14.20\00:33:17.94 since he said this to Moses." 00:33:17.97\00:33:19.88 He has kept me alive. 00:33:19.91\00:33:24.10 You think about it Caleb is the second oldest man 00:33:24.13\00:33:25.73 in the community, he is 85, Joshua was older. 00:33:25.76\00:33:28.11 Everybody else is a little berry mound 00:33:28.14\00:33:31.06 on those hot wilderness sense. 00:33:31.09\00:33:32.93 Nobody is left, he's kept me alive. 00:33:32.96\00:33:37.20 You know when I read those words, 00:33:37.23\00:33:39.26 I think of the senior citizens in this congregation, 00:33:39.29\00:33:42.56 who can make the same testimony, 00:33:42.59\00:33:44.29 the Lord has kept me alive all these years, halleluiah. 00:33:44.32\00:33:51.20 We are so blessed to have you that God has to couched 00:33:51.23\00:33:57.71 and nurtured to your senior years in this congregation. 00:33:57.74\00:34:02.09 Now I won't say a word to the young 00:34:02.12\00:34:03.62 because their few young over here. 00:34:03.65\00:34:07.24 The commentary on this verse in Joshua, 00:34:07.27\00:34:10.25 by the way I called up, I called up the great 00:34:10.28\00:34:13.31 such a dear friend Professor Leona Running, 00:34:13.34\00:34:15.80 the great Hebrew professor in our theological seminar. 00:34:15.83\00:34:18.58 She is 93 years young now. 00:34:18.61\00:34:19.99 I called her up this last week I said, Leona 00:34:20.02\00:34:21.72 you-- you're the only one that knows 00:34:21.75\00:34:23.31 who wrote the different books 00:34:23.34\00:34:25.58 of the Bible commentary in our commentary series. 00:34:25.61\00:34:28.68 So who wrote the book, 00:34:28.71\00:34:30.14 who wrote the commentary for Joshua said, 00:34:30.17\00:34:31.96 I'll call you back she checked it all out, 00:34:31.99\00:34:34.56 RO Christiansen some of you might remember 00:34:34.59\00:34:36.96 that name wrote the book on Joshua. 00:34:36.99\00:34:39.76 Now I want put for those who are young, this is, 00:34:39.79\00:34:41.69 this is not for the aged, 00:34:41.72\00:34:43.00 this is not quote for you, this is for the young. 00:34:43.03\00:34:45.09 I want put it on the screen for you, 00:34:45.12\00:34:47.89 "The reward of a life of virtuous youth 00:34:47.92\00:34:52.10 and temperate manhood, by nature's own law, 00:34:52.13\00:34:55.45 is ordinarily" that's a key word, 00:34:55.48\00:34:57.86 "usually a vigorous, healthy, and respected old age. 00:34:57.89\00:35:03.21 'Loyalty to God had apparently preserved Caleb 00:35:03.24\00:35:05.97 from the dissipating sin of his fellow Israelites. 00:35:06.00\00:35:08.57 He had not indulged appetite as they had, 00:35:08.60\00:35:10.91 nor had he lost sleep and rest at night 00:35:10.94\00:35:13.87 struggling with a painted conscience 00:35:13.90\00:35:15.65 His abstemious his self control life 00:35:15.68\00:35:18.58 had paid off in dividends in this life, 00:35:18.61\00:35:21.11 and now" in our story "he presented himself 00:35:21.14\00:35:23.76 before Joshua with undiminished strength at an age 00:35:23.79\00:35:27.46 when most others had already been called from this life." 00:35:27.49\00:35:32.01 I want to say something that you who are young. 00:35:32.04\00:35:35.59 Don't you believe, don't get snookered by society 00:35:35.62\00:35:41.37 which will call you to sow all the vow 00:35:41.40\00:35:44.30 those you want right now, 00:35:44.33\00:35:46.48 I'm telling you what it isn't worth it, whatever-- 00:35:46.51\00:35:50.41 whatever a man saws he's gonna eventually reap. 00:35:50.44\00:35:53.94 So here is the deal, don't you be at all, 00:35:53.97\00:35:56.46 don't you be at all ashamed about living virtuously, 00:35:56.49\00:36:01.12 healthfully, righteously and faithfully. 00:36:01.15\00:36:04.32 You live that way, you live it boldly 00:36:04.35\00:36:06.53 and one day if Jesus doesn't come soon 00:36:06.56\00:36:09.06 your life can be extended 00:36:09.09\00:36:10.48 just when the community faith will be needing you. 00:36:10.51\00:36:13.33 You start right now. 00:36:13.36\00:36:16.21 Look at Caleb, read verse 10 again, 00:36:16.24\00:36:18.97 "Now then, just as the Lord promised, 00:36:19.00\00:36:21.17 he has kept me alive for forty-five years 00:36:21.20\00:36:23.79 since the time he said this to Moses, 00:36:23.82\00:36:25.14 while Israel moved about in the desert. 00:36:25.17\00:36:26.99 Here I am today" can you see that 85 years old saying this. 00:36:27.02\00:36:29.79 And by the way, they didn't live to be 200, 00:36:29.82\00:36:32.06 Joshua lived to be 101 00:36:32.09\00:36:33.43 so he is the equivalent of 85 year old man today. 00:36:33.46\00:36:37.02 We just beg that the last survivor 00:36:37.05\00:36:39.11 World War I was is a 109. 00:36:39.14\00:36:42.25 So it's our-it's within our age bracket now. 00:36:42.28\00:36:45.07 Here I am today what did he say, 00:36:45.10\00:36:46.45 00:36:51.35\00:36:53.61 as I was then, Now give me" 00:36:53.64\00:36:55.83 and I love it in the New King James, 00:36:55.86\00:36:57.40 "Now give me this mountain" I want this mountain, "You yourself heard then 00:37:06.87\00:37:08.15 that the Anakites" these giants "were there 00:37:08.18\00:37:10.38 and their cities were large and fortified, 00:37:10.41\00:37:12.29 but the Lord helping me" at 85 years of age, 00:37:12.32\00:37:15.43 "I will drive them out just as he said."
