¤¤ 00:00:00.70\00:00:02.06 >> Good morning, PMC. We're happy to see you this morning on this Sabbath morning. 00:00:08.27\00:00:14.08 Let's stand together for prayer. 00:00:14.08\00:00:16.75 Dear Lord, we come to You with humble hearts. 00:00:25.02\00:00:29.52 Thank You for this opportunity that we can come together and 00:00:29.52\00:00:32.73 worship You and praise Your name. 00:00:32.73\00:00:35.10 Thank You for loving us so much. Thank You for the blessings in our lives, and thank You for 00:00:35.26\00:00:41.44 this opportunity of a new school year. We love You, and please 00:00:41.44\00:00:46.21 bless us. Amen. >> Amen. 00:00:46.21\00:00:50.41 >> Remain standing. Thank you so much. Or up and down if you want 00:00:50.41\00:00:55.72 to exercise. 00:00:55.72\00:00:57.92 So, the first song is a celebration that we together 00:00:58.09\00:01:02.19 will start this year singing, and we will conclude this song 00:01:02.19\00:01:07.56 in the New Jerusalem when it returns down here on Earth. 00:01:07.56\00:01:12.17 Keep that in mind as we sing to a very beautiful hymn tune that you all know -- the words 00:01:12.33\00:01:18.44 "For the Music of Creation." [ "For the Music of Creation" 00:01:18.44\00:01:24.88 plays ] [ Congregation sings ] 00:01:32.72\00:01:34.46 [ Hymn continues ] 00:02:21.04\00:02:22.80 >> You may be seated. So, this Thursday, we came back 00:04:08.24\00:04:13.08 to Andrews, all the faculty, and we met for the Faculty Institute 00:04:13.08\00:04:17.59 and were greeted by Stephen and Susan Zork with a wonderful 00:04:17.59\00:04:20.99 worship. 00:04:20.99\00:04:21.89 And as is customary for Stephen, he pulled out many new hymns for us to sing to some common tunes. 00:04:22.06\00:04:30.23 And one really struck me in the heart, and we're gonna sing it 00:04:30.23\00:04:33.74 now. I asked him if we could sing it again today. Make this 00:04:33.74\00:04:37.91 your testimony. Really think on these words. And if it resonates with your soul, sing it to God. 00:04:37.91\00:04:44.65 [ Congregation sings "As a Fire 00:04:44.81\00:04:46.55 Is Meant for Burning" ] 00:04:46.88\00:04:48.28 [ "God, You Spin the Whirling Planets" plays ] 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.96 [ Congregation sings ] 00:07:55.30\00:07:56.87 [ Song ends ] 00:09:52.62\00:09:54.06 [ "Open My Eyes, That I May See" plays ] 00:09:58.49\00:10:01.43 [ Song ends ] 00:13:30.17\00:13:31.54 >> Hello, boys and girls. Welcome. Do you guys know what I 00:13:33.64\00:13:40.28 am? >> Scientist. >> A scientist. I am a scienti-- I'm 00:13:40.28\00:13:45.45 a special one called a chemist. And my name is Dr. Ryan Hayes, PhD, Department of Chemistry, 00:13:45.45\00:13:51.76 Associate Professor. Or you can just call me "Dr. Bubbles." 00:13:51.76\00:13:58.70 >> Bubbles? [ Children speaking indistinctly ] 00:13:58.70\00:14:01.47 >> Yeah, I'm not gonna make bubbles today, but we are gonna learn some important lessons and 00:14:01.47\00:14:05.14 some important chemistry. Do you guys like running experiments? 00:14:05.14\00:14:07.81 >> Yes! >> Yeah! We're gonna run you one here 00:14:07.81\00:14:09.98 today. We're gonna learn something about how God works 00:14:09.98\00:14:14.82 right here. I got to ask this question. I think I know the answer, but I'm gonna ask it 00:14:14.82\00:14:18.79 anyway. Have you done anything bad before? [ Inhales sharply ] 00:14:18.79\00:14:22.19 Oh, and some are brave, yes. Yeah, so, how do we know that we're doing something bad? 00:14:22.19\00:14:27.46 >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] >> [ Chuckling ] When it explodes. 00:14:27.46\00:14:30.10 >> When you get caught. >> When you get caught, yeah. That's how 00:14:30.10\00:14:34.34 we know. No, is there -- Your parents catch you. But how do 00:14:34.34\00:14:39.17 your parents know when you've done something bad? How do they know? >> They have their 00:14:39.17\00:14:45.08 parents' sense -- >> They're superheroes! >> Oh, they have 00:14:45.08\00:14:47.92 parental sense of superpowers. I agree. [ Laughter ] 00:14:47.92\00:14:50.49 This is true -- two words that have never been spoken. But, you know, I got to let you 00:14:50.49\00:14:54.46 in on a secret -- the way that we know, as parents, what's right and what's wrong and 00:14:54.46\00:14:59.13 what's bad and what's good is we look to God's Word, and, more specifically, we look at the 00:14:59.13\00:15:04.40 Ten Commandments. So I'm always trying to teach my kids the Ten 00:15:04.40\00:15:07.97 Commandments, because if you break one of God's laws, we call that -- Does anybody know? 00:15:07.97\00:15:13.48 >> Sin. >> Sin. And I actually got some in a 00:15:13.48\00:15:17.38 bottle right here! Yeah, we won't run with that one at all. 00:15:17.38\00:15:24.82 But when you do something bad, it's like putting a stain into your record, into who you are, 00:15:24.82\00:15:31.63 and you're not feeling too good. But, you know, every one of you are different -- some of you are 00:15:31.63\00:15:34.93 tall, some of you are short. 00:15:34.93\00:15:36.67 And I'm gonna represent you, the kids here, with these different 00:15:36.83\00:15:40.77 glasses that have what looks like water in there. 00:15:40.77\00:15:44.34 Some of you are nice and round. Some have taller necks there, 00:15:44.34\00:15:49.58 rounder at the bottom, okay? Some of you have this nice shape 00:15:49.58\00:15:53.92 here. We have another round one. 00:15:53.92\00:15:55.62 Maybe some of you are nice and tall. 00:15:55.62\00:15:58.75 You're all different, right? You look different -- tall, 00:15:58.75\00:16:02.06 short. But you know what? 00:16:02.06\00:16:03.73 You are all the same because you are going to start maybe doing 00:16:03.73\00:16:08.56 things that -- we hope not, but we all do this -- we break God's 00:16:08.56\00:16:13.20 law. And sin gets into our lives here 00:16:13.20\00:16:18.37 and starts to darken our lives here -- well, hopefully, 00:16:18.37\00:16:22.14 eventually, get dark in here. [ Inhales sharply ] 00:16:22.14\00:16:25.05 Don't worry. It will. Oh, there it goes! 00:16:25.05\00:16:27.88 And sin gets into your life and starts to stain your life. 00:16:27.88\00:16:32.65 Don't worry -- there's lots of sin, unfortunately. 00:16:32.65\00:16:36.16 And we start to dark-- And, you know, maybe it was you didn't 00:16:36.16\00:16:41.10 listen to your mom and dad. That's a commandment, you know, 00:16:41.10\00:16:43.70 "Honor your father and your mother." 00:16:43.70\00:16:46.17 And maybe -- What are some other -- Does anyone know some 00:16:46.17\00:16:50.67 of the other commandments? >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] 00:16:50.67\00:16:53.88 >> "Thou shall not... kill," yeah. 00:16:53.88\00:16:57.35 And Jesus said something about, even if you get mad at your 00:16:57.35\00:17:00.32 brother, that's like the same thing. 00:17:00.32\00:17:02.22 Yes. >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] 00:17:02.22\00:17:04.12 >> Do not lie. That one's a hard one. 00:17:04.12\00:17:07.02 Teasing and lying with each other, and we get stains in our 00:17:07.02\00:17:11.29 lives. You know, and it doesn't matter 00:17:11.29\00:17:14.03 if you're tall and skinny. You, too, can start to get 00:17:14.03\00:17:18.20 stains in your life here. And I should've had more stains 00:17:18.20\00:17:22.00 in there, but we'll let that go down there, okay? 00:17:22.00\00:17:25.37 And it doesn't matter who you are, what your shape is, what 00:17:25.37\00:17:29.08 you've done, or what sin it is. We often say, "Well, I didn't 00:17:29.08\00:17:33.58 lie like you did. I maybe said a bad word. 00:17:33.58\00:17:37.12 That's not as bad." But you know what? 00:17:37.12\00:17:39.85 To God, it's all the same. It's still a stain on who you 00:17:39.85\00:17:42.82 are. And you become colored -- Now, 00:17:42.82\00:17:45.99 you say, "Oh, that looks so pretty. 00:17:45.99\00:17:47.86 That's so pretty blue. That sin is so neat. 00:17:47.86\00:17:51.33 All my friends, you know, are doing -- They're disobeying 00:17:51.33\00:17:54.90 their parents, and they don't get in trouble. 00:17:54.90\00:17:58.84 They've lied, and they don't really get in trouble. 00:17:58.84\00:18:01.71 And, you know, nothing bothers them, so maybe that sin is 00:18:01.71\00:18:04.81 something we should just -- it's okay to play with." 00:18:04.81\00:18:07.62 And I'm wondering if... Yeah, we may need to put a bunch 00:18:07.62\00:18:11.79 in there. And I have backup sin if we need 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.72 it, too. [ Laughter ] 00:18:14.72\00:18:18.39 Yeah, it's going. It's going there. 00:18:18.39\00:18:19.76 We might need a little bit more, and I'll just keep telling a 00:18:19.76\00:18:22.70 little bit more here as we put some in here. 00:18:22.70\00:18:25.47 But sin can get in your life. Does anybody know, though, how 00:18:25.47\00:18:28.94 you are to get rid of the sin in your life? 00:18:28.94\00:18:31.47 >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] 00:18:31.47\00:18:34.01 >> Oh, who wants to answer there? I think we got -- How do 00:18:34.18\00:18:36.88 you get rid of sin in your life? Oh, I heard Jesu-- Yeah, what? >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] 00:18:36.88\00:18:42.95 >> You dump the water out. Ha ha! [ Laughter ] 00:18:42.95\00:18:46.82 What's that? 00:18:46.82\00:18:48.06 >> By being good? >> By being good. 00:18:48.22\00:18:51.13 Those are really interesting ways to try to get sin out of 00:18:51.13\00:18:53.83 your life. What do you think over there, 00:18:53.83\00:18:55.80 young lady? >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] 00:18:55.80\00:19:00.97 >> Wow! I don't know if you heard 00:19:00.97\00:19:03.00 that -- if you dump the water out into someone else's cup. 00:19:03.00\00:19:06.27 That is profound. [ Laughter ] 00:19:06.27\00:19:10.08 This is ama-- You guys should do this at home. 00:19:10.08\00:19:12.91 [ Laughter ] Well, I got to let you in on a 00:19:12.91\00:19:16.92 little secret -- there's only one way to get rid of the stain, 00:19:16.92\00:19:20.12 the sin, the bad things in your life, and we got to know what 00:19:20.12\00:19:23.29 that is because someday -- Oh, you think you know? 00:19:23.29\00:19:25.99 >> Pray. >> We pray. 00:19:25.99\00:19:27.23 Okay, but we got to pray something specific. 00:19:27.23\00:19:29.43 >> Put a chemical in it. >> You put a chemical in there. 00:19:29.43\00:19:31.70 You're getting closer, but that's not -- What do you think? 00:19:31.70\00:19:34.07 >> We ask God to forgive us. >> You ask God to forgive you. 00:19:34.07\00:19:37.27 That's right. And I actually -- I have that 00:19:37.27\00:19:40.71 forgiveness in a bottle right here. 00:19:40.71\00:19:42.44 Look at that little bottle! I have in here the power of 00:19:42.44\00:19:47.12 Jesus. In fact, it's Vitamin C -- 00:19:47.12\00:19:49.48 "Vitamin Christ." And I'm just gonna take a little 00:19:49.48\00:19:53.62 bit of that, and let's see if it's powerful enough to get rid 00:19:53.62\00:19:56.69 of the stain in one of these persons' lives. 00:19:56.69\00:20:01.23 And we mix it around... >> Whoa! 00:20:01.23\00:20:04.07 >> ...and it's all clear. Wow! 00:20:04.07\00:20:08.50 Did it matter what the sin was? >> No. 00:20:08.50\00:20:10.91 >> Nope. >> It's magic. 00:20:10.91\00:20:13.11 >> No, it's not magic. It's chemistry. 00:20:13.11\00:20:16.21 [ Laughter ] Thank you for saying that. 00:20:16.21\00:20:22.25 What about this person? They were a little bit bigger. 00:20:22.25\00:20:24.89 Did the sin matter? No, it's gone there, too. 00:20:24.89\00:20:28.29 And this person, well, they had a different type of sin. 00:20:28.29\00:20:30.99 Did it matter? No, see, Jesus -- that's why He 00:20:30.99\00:20:33.93 came and died, because Jesus is the special magic, the 00:20:33.93\00:20:39.00 chemistry -- however you want to explain it -- that will come and 00:20:39.00\00:20:42.87 take away the sin of the world. It doesn't matter who you are. 00:20:42.87\00:20:46.31 Sin is sin. Yeah, this one doesn't -- well, 00:20:46.31\00:20:50.98 doesn't have too much blue in it, but, you know, it's still 00:20:50.98\00:20:54.22 sin. And God wants to get rid of that 00:20:54.22\00:20:56.42 in there, too. And it's all gone. 00:20:56.42\00:20:58.15 >> [ Speaks indistinctly ] >> There's a little blue on top? 00:20:58.15\00:21:00.66 [ Whispering ] It'll go away, trust me. 00:21:00.66\00:21:02.39 It will go away. [ Normal voice ] Now, hey, 00:21:02.39\00:21:04.26 here's the big sin problem right here. 00:21:04.26\00:21:07.36 Couldn't I just put that back in and the sin can go back and 00:21:07.36\00:21:10.60 these people right here would be sinful again? 00:21:10.60\00:21:14.24 This is why we're all coming to church and why we're so excited 00:21:14.24\00:21:17.41 and why, as Adventists here, we know that, someday, Jesus is 00:21:17.41\00:21:20.44 just gonna get rid of the whole sin problem, okay? 00:21:20.44\00:21:24.28 And the whole sin problem is just gonna go away. 00:21:24.28\00:21:28.95 And that's why I got a lid on this so we can just get rid of 00:21:28.95\00:21:33.12 the sin problem -- the source of it. 00:21:33.12\00:21:35.82 >> Whoa! [ Applause ] 00:21:35.82\00:21:37.76 Okay. Now, I heard this is PMC. 00:21:43.77\00:21:46.20 It's a big church, lots of people, and I heard that you got 00:21:46.20\00:21:50.34 to go big or go home. And so, actually, I got 00:21:50.34\00:21:54.81 something bigger here. [ Grunts ] 00:21:54.81\00:21:59.38 >> Whoa! >> Whew! 00:21:59.38\00:22:04.52 Do you think this little bottle can take care of all of that? 00:22:04.52\00:22:08.19 >> Yes! >> You guys are learning to have 00:22:08.19\00:22:11.93 faith there. You bet. 00:22:11.93\00:22:14.20 Oh, I hope so. I'm gonna just dump it out. 00:22:14.20\00:22:17.03 Jesus poured out His whole life for you and for me and for the 00:22:17.03\00:22:21.04 whole world. And let's see -- And lift with 00:22:21.04\00:22:24.07 the legs, not with the back. [ Straining ] This is pretty 00:22:24.07\00:22:27.68 heavy. Let's see if we can get rid of 00:22:27.68\00:22:29.18 it. [ Normal voice ] Is it going 00:22:29.18\00:22:32.78 away? >> Yes! 00:22:32.78\00:22:33.98 >> Yeah? There it goes! 00:22:33.98\00:22:37.09 Don't worry -- I have some backup Jesus if it's not enough. 00:22:37.09\00:22:40.06 [ Laughter ] >> [ Speaking indistinctly ] 00:22:40.06\00:22:44.16 >> It's gone. That's gone away. There'll be a little bit in 00:22:44.16\00:22:46.93 there. Don't look too closely. 00:22:46.93\00:22:50.23 There'll be some scars that might remain. 00:22:50.23\00:22:54.70 Hey, this was really cool. We learned something amazing. 00:22:54.70\00:22:57.07 It doesn't matter what the sin is. 00:22:57.07\00:22:58.61 Jesus can get rid of it. And you guys can see it? 00:22:58.61\00:23:00.81 It doesn't matter who you are. Jesus can get rid of your sin. 00:23:00.81\00:23:03.45 You have to ask, you have to repent -- trust that Jesus can 00:23:03.45\00:23:05.98 take care of it. 00:23:05.98\00:23:07.38 You guys have been great listeners. Let's have a prayer 00:23:07.55\00:23:11.19 to end our story time. Dear God in heaven, thank You for making this amazing world -- 00:23:11.19\00:23:15.26 the only world that we know of that has water everywhere on top 00:23:15.26\00:23:19.13 of it. And we have so much inside of us, Lord. It reminds us that You want to 00:23:19.13\00:23:22.90 do something big in our life and in this world. You want to get 00:23:22.90\00:23:27.04 rid of the sin in this world so that we can go home with You someday -- so we go big, so we 00:23:27.04\00:23:32.97 can go home with You. Lord, bless these children so they'll learn about Your power, 00:23:32.97\00:23:36.28 Your law, and how You can get rid of the sin in their life. Bless them now, in Jesus' name. 00:23:36.28\00:23:40.62 Amen. 00:23:40.62\00:23:41.48 >> In your bulletins, on page six, we have our Scripture 00:23:43.59\00:23:50.93 reading. Let's read responsively. I'll read the light print, and join me in the 00:23:50.93\00:23:58.90 bold print on page six of your bulletin. John 10... John 00:23:58.90\00:24:06.71 4:10-15... Oh, God, here we are in worship, our hearts lifted up to You. 00:29:02.37\00:29:12.55 Those hymns with new words swept us heavenward. We've come to 00:29:12.55\00:29:21.09 experience Your presence... through the prayer You drew us 00:29:21.09\00:29:30.27 near... through Ryan's spot-on lesson to all of us. Thank you. 00:29:30.27\00:29:38.04 And now, with Carla and Trina and Ken, we pray the prayer they 00:29:38.04\00:29:45.91 played. "Be Thou our vision, oh, Lord of our hearts. Naught nothing be all else to us 00:29:45.91\00:29:54.72 save that Thou art -- Thou our best thought by day or by night, waking or sleeping -- Thy 00:29:54.72\00:30:08.24 presence our light." Cast the vision for us now, dear God. 00:30:08.24\00:30:13.31 In your Word, we pray in Christ's name. Amen. Amen. 00:30:13.31\00:30:17.95 Gosh. Before I plunge into this 00:30:18.11\00:30:20.32 story, I need to give a shout-out to a young friend of 00:30:20.32\00:30:23.82 mine named Joshua Husslin -- sophomore, Andrews Academy -- 00:30:23.82\00:30:28.32 who did that artwork. Isn't that beautiful? 00:30:28.32\00:30:34.36 If you're new here, and we have a bunch of freshman parents with 00:30:34.36\00:30:38.60 their students, new students -- and faculty, who worship all 00:30:38.60\00:30:41.84 over this community. 00:30:41.84\00:30:43.24 Glad you're here, as well. But if you're new here, you don't know that -- one, two, 00:30:43.41\00:30:52.41 three -- there's one spot left. This will be the fourth year we have come up with a...theme 00:30:52.41\00:31:00.76 device for Fall Fellowship. And then the first Friday night with the freshman -- which will 00:31:00.76\00:31:05.79 be next Friday night -- that's what happens through the goal 00:31:05.79\00:31:10.67 device. And they will come here Sabbath after Sabbath or chapel after chapel, and they will 00:31:10.67\00:31:16.10 remember when they see their name. So thank you, Joshua, for moving us into this theme. 00:31:16.10\00:31:23.11 I want to tell you a story, get us going. Carmine Gallo, in his 00:31:23.11\00:31:27.82 book "The Storyteller's Secret," frames that late afternoon, March 1983 -- two men standing 00:31:27.82\00:31:36.86 on the terrace of a luxury apartment overlooking New York's Central Park -- toe to toe. 00:31:36.86\00:31:44.73 The sun is dipping in the west, over the Hudson River. And there 00:31:44.73\00:31:51.27 is energy between these two. The older man's 45 years old. He's a very successful corporate 00:31:51.27\00:31:56.08 executive -- PepsiCo. The young man, 26, dressed in blue jeans 00:31:56.08\00:32:04.59 and a mock turtleneck, has been pushing the older guy to jump ship with his corporation... 00:32:04.59\00:32:14.56 be born in a new venture. But he's lost, the young man -- absolutely no budging, no 00:32:14.56\00:32:21.10 budging from the executive. And so now the young man [Chuckling] 00:32:21.10\00:32:27.14 is staring at his running shoes, staring at the toes of his running shoes, thinking, 00:32:27.14\00:32:30.95 thinking, thinking, "I've lost," when suddenly his head jerks up and he blurts out, "Do you want 00:32:30.95\00:32:38.92 to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the 00:32:38.92\00:32:46.03 world?" Now, of course, everybody knows the fabled story of that moment when Steve Jobs, 00:32:46.03\00:32:51.13 26, John Sculley, PepsiCo executive 45, when the ignition of that question -- as Sculley 00:32:51.13\00:33:00.84 later described it, "a gut punch --" when the ignition of that question blended these two into 00:33:00.84\00:33:10.32 a fiery partnership that literally has changed the world, 00:33:10.32\00:33:19.36 hasn't it? "Do you want to sell sugar water, or do you want to come with me and change the 00:33:19.36\00:33:26.17 world for the better?" Two years later, Steve Jobs -- March 1983. 00:33:26.17\00:33:32.77 Two years later, Steve Jobs is fired. 12 years after he's 00:33:32.77\00:33:38.88 fired, Apple takes him back. In his first staff meeting -- Now, 00:33:38.88\00:33:42.28 get this. In his first staff meeting with the Apple team, Steve Jobs speaks these words. 00:33:42.28\00:33:48.22 Put them on the screen for you... 00:33:48.39\00:33:50.49 Here it comes... 00:34:17.62\00:34:19.19 "We believe that people with passion can change the world for 00:34:28.43\00:34:32.33 the better." 00:34:32.33\00:34:33.74 You have to believe God believes that, as well. I mean, take a 00:34:33.90\00:34:38.01 look at the theme text that was assigned to me and us for this Fall Fellowship weekend. 00:34:38.01\00:34:41.64 Open your Bible to Isaiah chapter 58. Isaiah chapter 58. 00:34:41.64\00:34:47.25 Theme for this Fall Fellowship -- "live holy." I tell you what, 00:34:47.25\00:34:55.76 I found out who actually joined this text to the theme. It's my friend June Price, our 00:34:55.76\00:35:00.16 chaplain here. I said, "Hey, June, did you pick that theme, 00:35:00.16\00:35:04.50 that text?" It's a perfect fit. Watch this. Because in Isaiah 58, you know what's happening 00:35:04.50\00:35:10.17 here? We have a soliloquy of God. He's doing all the talking, although he very adroitly quotes 00:35:10.17\00:35:15.98 the people in buttressing his point. But the fact is, you 00:35:15.98\00:35:20.95 don't get the point with just this dynamite text. Let's read the text and see what 00:35:20.95\00:35:28.26 this sign high overhead has to do with these words of God. This 00:35:28.26\00:35:32.86 is Isaiah 58. Open your Bible to Isaiah 58:11. I'm in the NIV. Any Bible you have is fine. 00:35:32.86\00:35:37.00 If you didn't bring a Bible, track this one, please. Pull the 00:35:37.00\00:35:40.47 pew Bible out. It'll be page 500. 00:35:40.47\00:35:42.04 Okay, God speaking... 00:35:42.20\00:35:43.77 And what God has launched into -- and we don't get this with just that text -- is an 00:36:00.29\00:36:04.96 intense quid-pro-quo conversation. You know quid pro 00:36:04.96\00:36:09.73 quo -- Latin, "This for that." God says, "If you do this, I'll 00:36:09.73\00:36:12.40 do that. If you do this, I'll do that." We need to get a feel for that before this promise, and so 00:36:12.40\00:36:17.31 I'm gonna ask you to do something -- We don't read usually this much in a passage, 00:36:17.31\00:36:22.81 but let's go back to verse 1, Isaiah 58. Go up to the top of the chapter. Let's read this. 00:36:22.81\00:36:25.68 Let's get -- sense the drama, the tension mounting as God moves to our theme text for 00:36:25.68\00:36:31.62 Fall Fellowship 2016. 00:36:31.62\00:36:33.86 All right, verse one, God speaking -- "Shout it aloud, do 00:36:34.02\00:36:36.79 not hold back. Raise your voice like a 00:36:36.79\00:36:38.76 trumpet --" a shofar. "Declare to my people their 00:36:38.76\00:36:41.16 rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins..." 00:36:41.16\00:36:44.60 "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please," God says, 00:37:03.52\00:37:07.16 "and you exploit all your workers..." 00:37:07.16\00:37:09.76 "Then --" See, he said, "If, if, if." 00:37:56.07\00:37:58.04 If you do this, this, this, then here comes the quid pro quo. 00:37:58.04\00:38:01.14 Then you do that... 00:38:01.14\00:38:02.74 "Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry 00:38:12.59\00:38:15.89 for help, and He will say, 'Here am I --'" another quid pro quo. 00:38:15.89\00:38:19.43 Here it comes. "If you do away with the yoke of 00:38:19.43\00:38:22.16 oppression, with the pointing finger, and malicious talk..." 00:38:22.16\00:38:25.93 Then -- It's understood here. "Then the Lord will guide you 00:38:35.94\00:38:39.35 always --" our theme text -- "He will satisfy your needs in a 00:38:39.35\00:38:42.82 sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. 00:38:42.82\00:38:45.72 You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose 00:38:45.72\00:38:50.39 waters never fail." Wow! 00:38:50.39\00:38:53.63 God cuts to the chase. 00:38:53.63\00:38:56.30 And did you notice he makes the very same point that Steve Jobs 00:38:56.46\00:39:02.00 made. Put Jobs' words on the screen for you... 00:39:02.00\00:39:05.67 You know what? That sentence has Andrews University written all 00:39:13.62\00:39:16.69 over it -- people with passion who change the world for the 00:39:16.69\00:39:20.56 better. That sentence has the Seventh-Day Adventist Church written all over it -- people 00:39:20.56\00:39:24.49 with a passion who change the world for the better. That even 00:39:24.49\00:39:28.20 has little old Pioneer Memorial written all over it -- people with a passion who change the 00:39:28.20\00:39:33.84 world for the better. That's what I believe about you," God 00:39:33.84\00:39:37.87 declares. "I believe my people, with my passion, can change the world for the better." 00:39:37.87\00:39:43.18 And guess what. That's what it means -- That's what it means to 00:39:43.18\00:39:48.12 live holy. That's it -- to live with passion, to make a difference. I mean, come on, "Do 00:39:48.12\00:39:54.62 you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life? Come with 00:39:54.62\00:39:58.43 me and change the world." That's what God's crying out here in 00:39:58.43\00:40:02.26 Isaiah 58. "Do you want to sit around and quibble over the sugar water of theological 00:40:02.26\00:40:06.43 niceties and religious debates, or do you want to come with me and change the world?" 00:40:06.43\00:40:09.97 That's clearly what live holy means. "My people, with my 00:40:09.97\00:40:18.15 passion, can change the world for the better." Oh, by the way, 00:40:18.15\00:40:22.02 who in the world gets changed? [ Chuckles ] Jesus said, "The least of these, my brothers and 00:40:22.02\00:40:28.12 sisters. 00:40:28.12\00:40:29.02 You do it to them, you do it to me. 00:40:29.19\00:40:30.96 You don't do it to them, you don't do it to me." 00:40:30.96\00:40:33.29 That's who He's just talked about in Isaiah 58, isn't that 00:40:33.29\00:40:35.96 right? Who gets changed? 00:40:35.96\00:40:39.37 The "poor lives matter" people that Pastor Torres, last 00:40:39.37\00:40:44.01 Sabbath, with passion preached about, those are the people that 00:40:44.01\00:40:46.94 God is talking about here. 00:40:46.94\00:40:48.68 Who gets changed? The marginalized, the alienated, the disenfranchised up the road 00:40:48.84\00:40:53.62 from you, God says, and they are also in your midst. Concentrate 00:40:53.62\00:41:00.06 on them. To follow God into that world, to live with passion and make a difference -- that's what 00:41:00.06\00:41:04.09 it means to live holy. Our theme. Because live that way, 00:41:04.09\00:41:14.54 and, oh, boy, does God come through with the promise. Now, this is writ large, our 00:41:14.54\00:41:20.44 theme text, verse 11. Four divine quid-pro-quo promises that, in themselves, 00:41:20.44\00:41:26.45 are a stirring portrait of God. I'm gonna run these by you, see 00:41:26.45\00:41:30.55 what you think. Verse 11, read it again... 00:41:30.72\00:41:32.32 Promise number one -- four of these. 00:41:41.80\00:41:43.30 Here comes promise number one. 00:41:43.30\00:41:45.20 God says, "I will guide you. I will guide you personally. I 00:41:45.37\00:41:49.54 will guide you institutionally." And don't you just love that 00:41:49.54\00:41:52.64 word? "I will guide you always. I'm gonna stay with you always. It doesn't matter what you've 00:41:52.64\00:41:57.75 been through. It doesn't matter what you're going through now. 00:41:57.75\00:41:59.95 No matter what, I will be there to guide you always. You know why? Because if..." 00:41:59.95\00:42:07.02 It's like that old spiritual sings -- ¤ If we ever needed the 00:42:07.02\00:42:15.26 Lord before ¤ ¤ We sure do need Him now, oh ¤ ¤ We sure do need 00:42:15.26\00:42:23.20 Him now ¤ Sing it out. >> Together: ¤ Oh, we sure do need 00:42:23.20\00:42:27.78 Him now ¤ ¤ If we ever needed the Lord before ¤ ¤ We sure do 00:42:27.78\00:42:36.69 need Him now ¤ ¤ We need Him every day and all the way ¤ >> ¤ 00:42:36.69\00:42:43.66 All the way ¤ ¤ [ Falsetto ] We need -- ¤ Oh, sorry. [ Laughter, 00:42:43.66\00:42:48.16 applause ] I tried. I saw Steve Zork over there. I figured he'd 00:42:48.16\00:42:51.53 jump up. He just said -- [ Clicks tongue ] [ Laughter ] 00:42:51.53\00:42:56.24 Hey, guys, that's where we are right now. We really need the 00:42:56.24\00:43:01.91 Lord. [ Chuckles ] We need the Lord. God says, "I got good news 00:43:01.91\00:43:06.01 for you. I will guide you always. Live holy for me. Live 00:43:06.01\00:43:12.12 holy with me. I'll guide you always." But there are four of these. That was number one. 00:43:12.12\00:43:15.29 Here comes number two -- "I will satisfy you. In fact, I will 00:43:15.29\00:43:20.46 satisfy your needs. In fact, I will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land." 00:43:20.46\00:43:28.40 Because let's be honest -- we all -- everybody, no exception -- we all experience 00:43:28.40\00:43:34.68 droughts in our lives. Some of them are short-lived. Others can 00:43:34.68\00:43:41.52 be long, dry, and debilitating. Some of you right now perhaps are going through the 00:43:41.52\00:43:48.22 sun-scorched land professionally. Mm-hmm. 00:43:48.22\00:43:52.56 Everything keeps coming up dry, stale. Your career is no longer 00:43:52.56\00:43:56.56 satisfying to you. Your job is no longer challenging. 00:43:56.56\00:44:01.10 "I'm gonna satisfy your needs in that sun-scorched place you find 00:44:01.10\00:44:06.34 yourself today." Some of you are going through the sun-scorched land in your marriage right now 00:44:06.34\00:44:13.62 -- right now. "It just -- What happened? This was here, and now 00:44:13.62\00:44:17.32 it's gone. It's dry, it's brittle, it's lifeless." Some of you are going through 00:44:17.32\00:44:22.79 the sun-scorched land spiritually, morally. The values that you once stood 00:44:22.79\00:44:28.16 for you have shoved to the side, and now there's nothing but burning sun and no water. 00:44:28.16\00:44:34.60 God says, "I will satisfy your needs. You turn to me, boy. 00:44:34.60\00:44:37.87 Girl, you turn to me, and I'll take care of you." Mm. 00:44:37.87\00:44:42.48 "I will satisfy your needs." And, oh, boy, I have to slip 00:44:42.48\00:44:48.35 this in. Because there is a -- I'll tell you, I go through these sun-scorched periods in my 00:44:48.35\00:44:55.32 life. And when I do, there's a go-to text that God has shown me. He says, "Boy, you just keep 00:44:55.32\00:45:01.10 coming back here," and I go back. 00:45:01.10\00:45:03.10 I beat a beeline to Jeremiah chapter 17. 00:45:03.26\00:45:07.47 Because it's very interesting -- And I want you to look this up, 00:45:07.47\00:45:09.87 please -- Jeremiah 17. 00:45:09.87\00:45:11.27 And this promise tacked to Isaiah 58:11, they're just like 00:45:11.44\00:45:16.48 twins. I want you to see this -- Jeremiah. I need you to see it 00:45:16.48\00:45:20.02 in your own Bible -- Jeremiah 17. We'll be right back. 00:45:20.02\00:45:24.22 Jeremiah 17. Wow. Look what God is saying. "Sun-scorched land? I'll satisfy your needs." 00:45:24.22\00:45:28.49 Watch this -- chapter 17, Jeremiah. Here it is. 00:45:28.49\00:45:32.16 Yeah, I got this place marked up all [Chuckles] over because I have been so many times back to 00:45:32.16\00:45:36.46 this. Jeremiah 17:7... 00:45:36.46\00:45:38.30 "God, do You know how long? I've hit the sun-scorched land." "No 00:45:57.55\00:46:10.73 big deal to me. You'll be like a tree planted by the water, roots 00:46:10.73\00:46:14.07 out to the stream. Now here come three negatives. Here they come. "It does not fear when heat 00:46:14.07\00:46:18.41 comes." Because heat comes -- sun-scorched land comes into 00:46:18.41\00:46:21.14 every life at some point -- professionally, morally, spiritually, maritally, 00:46:21.14\00:46:24.55 financially. It'll come to you. But, "It does not fear when heat 00:46:24.55\00:46:29.82 comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries --" I 00:46:29.82\00:46:34.22 love that. "It has no worries in a year of drought and never 00:46:34.22\00:46:39.06 fails to bear fruit." "I will take care of you. I will satisfy 00:46:39.06\00:46:44.93 your needs in a sun-scorched land. Whatever it is you're going through right now, I will 00:46:44.93\00:46:49.14 take care of you." [ Sighs ] Come on. And by the way, this 00:46:49.14\00:46:57.51 promise for living in a sun-scorched land is a promise for America, too. I don't know 00:46:57.51\00:47:03.69 if you've slept through the summer. America's in trouble. I'll tell you what America is 00:47:03.69\00:47:11.56 facing -- a sun-scorched land that is rapidly approaching spiritual drought and moral 00:47:11.56\00:47:16.90 famine. The ancient prophet Amos predicted a day like this would 00:47:16.90\00:47:22.20 come. God says, "I want you to get this down so that, when it 00:47:22.20\00:47:25.01 comes, they'll know I saw it coming." 00:47:25.01\00:47:27.18 Amos 8:11... 00:47:27.34\00:47:30.48 "People will stagger from sea to --" shining -- "sea and 00:47:38.69\00:47:43.83 wander from north to east, searching for the word of the 00:47:43.83\00:47:46.49 Lord, but they will not find it." 00:47:46.49\00:47:49.30 Ladies and gentlemen, this is the perfect hour in this 00:47:49.30\00:47:52.40 civilization's history to claim our legacy as the flagship 00:47:52.40\00:47:55.67 daughter of Battle Creek College, founded in 00:47:55.67\00:47:58.27 1874. 00:47:58.27\00:47:59.51 Let's claim it. And 3,000 students? My Lord. 00:47:59.67\00:48:03.61 3,000 students moving out into a sun-scorched community, a sun-scorched nation, a 00:48:03.61\00:48:08.72 sun-scorched planet -- this is the hour. "Live holy for me," 00:48:08.72\00:48:17.83 God says. "You live holy for me... I'll take care of you. I 00:48:17.83\00:48:24.13 will guide you. I will satisfy you." Here comes number three. "I will strengthen you." 00:48:24.13\00:48:31.21 The King James reads, "I will make fat your bones." 00:48:31.21\00:48:34.54 Anybody here want fat bones? [ Laughter ] God, you could've 00:48:37.15\00:48:41.88 gotten our attention with something more than that. "I'll make fat your bones." 00:48:41.88\00:48:46.89 Of course, we miss the point. God's dealing -- His promise -- with the infrastructure -- our 00:48:46.89\00:48:52.76 personal infrastructure, our institutional infrastructure. God is saying, "I will 00:48:52.76\00:48:57.13 strengthen you from the inside out --" good news for those of you -- and you are here -- for 00:48:57.13\00:49:02.14 those of you who are burning the midnight oil to balance your department's budget. 00:49:02.14\00:49:08.71 "I will take care of you. I will strengthen that infrastructure 00:49:08.71\00:49:14.08 --" good news for you who are trying to balance this congregation's budget. "I will 00:49:14.08\00:49:19.15 take care of you. I will strengthen that infrastructure --" good news for you who have 00:49:19.15\00:49:25.16 been tasked to balance the budget of this university. "I will take care of you. 00:49:25.16\00:49:31.57 And I will strengthen your infrastructure. Live holy for 00:49:31.57\00:49:37.51 me." Four profound promises from God on the eve, on the cusp of a 00:49:37.51\00:49:41.68 new year. And here comes final promise, number four. 00:49:41.68\00:49:44.41 God says, "I will flourish you." You say, "Dwight, I just read 00:49:44.58\00:49:47.45 that. There's nothing about flourish 00:49:47.45\00:49:49.28 in that." Are you kidding? 00:49:49.28\00:49:51.19 The last two lines in verse 11, if they don't have "flourish" 00:49:51.19\00:49:54.09 written all over them, then you tell me what they're all about. 00:49:54.09\00:49:57.06 What are the last two lines? Put them on the screen... 00:49:57.06\00:50:00.03 On the eve of this new year, God says, "That's the future I have for you, Andrews University. 00:50:09.84\00:50:15.98 You live holy for me, and I will flourish you. I will flourish 00:50:15.98\00:50:22.78 you like my favorite garden on Earth. You will be fresh and 00:50:22.78\00:50:27.26 thick and verdant. You will be a vegetable garden of red and yellow and orange and 00:50:27.42\00:50:30.56 green and purple and brown and white and row after row of 00:50:30.56\00:50:33.46 nature's tastiest delicacies. You will flourish with moral 00:50:33.46\00:50:38.33 fruit. You will flourish with 00:50:38.33\00:50:40.34 intellectual fruit. You will flourish with spiritual 00:50:40.34\00:50:43.54 fruit. You will flourish because you're 00:50:43.54\00:50:46.07 my garden, and I have a built-in sprinkler system that will keep 00:50:46.07\00:50:49.91 you fresh." 00:50:49.91\00:50:52.35 That's what that sign is all about -- a built-in sprinkler system for this institution. 00:50:52.51\00:50:59.85 Like a well-watered garden, like an artesian well, like a spring that never runs dry... 00:50:59.85\00:51:09.70 "And so where do I find a spring like that?" the pretty woman asks the stranger with the dark 00:51:09.70\00:51:15.84 eyes and the gentle smile -- [ Chuckles ] he, a Jew, sitting on the mossy lip of this well 00:51:15.84\00:51:22.74 near Sychar, Samaria. Ken Gire, in his wonderful book, "Intimate 00:51:22.74\00:51:29.32 Moments With the Savior," picks up the story with this beautiful word picture -- cannot be 00:51:29.32\00:51:34.76 improved upon. So I'm gonna read it to you, but so that you don't get bored with me reading it, 00:51:34.76\00:51:40.90 I'm gonna put a picture you have never seen in your life of Jesus and the woman at the well on the 00:51:40.90\00:51:45.97 screen right now. So you look at that picture, and let me read 00:51:45.97\00:51:49.50 this to you. "The Palestinian sun glares its impartial eye upon both this nameless 00:51:49.50\00:51:55.88 Samaritan woman and upon the Savior of the world. Through sheer curtains of undulating 00:51:55.88\00:52:01.88 heat she comes. She, too, is weary -- not so much from the water jar she carries on her 00:52:01.88\00:52:07.06 head as from the emptiness she carries in her heart. The torrents of passion, once 00:52:07.06\00:52:11.19 swift in her life, have now run their course. She's weathered 00:52:11.19\00:52:16.06 and worn, her face eroded by the gullies of a spent life. That she comes at noon, the 00:52:16.06\00:52:20.70 hottest hour of the day, whispers a rumor of her 00:52:20.70\00:52:25.41 reputation. She's gone from man to man like one lost in the desert, sun-struck and 00:52:25.41\00:52:31.48 delirious. She comes to Jacob's Well, her empty water jar a telling symbol of her life. 00:52:31.48\00:52:38.72 As her eyes meet the Savior's, He sees within her a cavernous aching, a cistern in her soul 00:52:38.72\00:52:47.60 that will forever remain empty unless He fills it. Yet to her, 00:52:47.60\00:52:55.44 an anonymous woman with a failed life, He gives the most profound discourse in Scripture on the 00:52:55.44\00:52:59.94 subject of worship. But equally remarkable is what Jesus doesn't 00:52:59.94\00:53:03.78 say. He states her past and present marital status, but makes no reference to her sin. 00:53:03.78\00:53:08.92 He gives no call to repent. He presents no structured plan of 00:53:08.92\00:53:13.82 salvation. He offers no prayer. But with the words, 'I who speak to you am He,' Jesus brings her 00:53:13.82\00:53:22.56 back to face the Giver and His remarkable gift, living water -- not a wage to be earned, not a 00:53:22.56\00:53:32.27 prize to be won, but a gift to be received. To her, this 00:53:32.27\00:53:38.38 stranger was first simply "a Jew..." then "sir..." then "a 00:53:38.38\00:53:48.66 prophet." And then she sees Him for who He really is -- Messiah. And with her heart overflowing 00:53:48.66\00:53:58.83 with living water, she starts to run -- slowly at first, then as fast as her new legs will take 00:53:58.83\00:54:05.84 her." So, let's end with Jesus' incredible offer to the woman at 00:54:05.84\00:54:13.98 the well. Turns out His offer is a line drawn right out of Isaiah 00:54:13.98\00:54:23.79 58:11. Take a look at this. It's not our [Indistinct] New provost 00:54:23.79\00:54:27.96 just read it a moment ago. I want you to end in John four, 00:54:27.96\00:54:32.03 please, John four. John four. We'll pick up the narrative in 00:54:32.03\00:54:38.34 John 4:11... "And Jesus answered --" verse 13 -- "'Everyone who drinks this water will be 00:54:48.65\00:54:54.96 thirsty again...'" The "artesian well." Ladies and gentleman, you 00:55:06.20\00:55:08.20 have just met Him. 00:55:08.20\00:55:09.60 He is the Lord Jesus Christ, a spring that never runs dry. In fact, He is so much the 00:55:09.77\00:55:16.48 artesian well that, even when He dies on the cross, the water is 00:55:16.48\00:55:24.35 still flowing. He's made every provision for you and me to live holy for Him. The water still 00:55:24.35\00:55:34.46 flows. "Desire of Ages," on this moment -- "Jesus did not convey the idea that merely one 00:55:34.46\00:55:39.90 draft --" one drink -- "of the water of life would suffice the 00:55:39.90\00:55:43.54 receiver. He who tastes of the love of Christ will continually 00:55:43.71\00:55:47.08 long for more; but he seeks for nothing else. 00:55:47.08\00:55:49.24 The riches, honors, and pleasures of the world do not 00:55:49.24\00:55:52.21 attract her. The constant cry of her heart 00:55:52.21\00:55:54.48 is, 'More of thee...' Every human resource and 00:55:54.48\00:55:58.25 dependence will fail. The cisterns will be emptied, 00:55:58.25\00:56:02.19 the pools become dry; but our Redeemer is an inexhaustible 00:56:02.19\00:56:06.86 fountain --" an artesian well. "We may drink, and drink again, 00:56:06.86\00:56:11.70 and ever find a fresh supply..." 00:56:11.70\00:56:13.77 Amen. 00:56:28.58\00:56:30.39 And so, Andrews University... this is the Gospel truth for us.
