00:10:39.08\00:10:40.74 Today's teaching, we'll find out. 00:10:40.77\00:10:44.58 We continue our mini series, 00:10:44.61\00:10:48.44 "Not I but Christ, Tales of Humility." 00:10:48.47\00:10:51.86 Title of the teaching today, 00:10:51.89\00:10:54.23 "Two Halves to One truth." 00:10:54.26\00:10:57.45 Let's pray together. 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.79 Holy Father, we must get both halves right. 00:11:02.82\00:11:07.02 Just one half is not enough. 00:11:07.05\00:11:09.44 Give us both halves in this single truth 00:11:09.47\00:11:12.61 and may one of the halves become true of us, 00:11:16.84\00:11:22.72 we pray in Jesus name, amen. 00:11:22.75\00:11:27.43 Once up on a time there was a father 00:11:27.46\00:11:33.13 and his son, 00:11:33.16\00:11:35.86 and as it is with fathers and sons, they were close. 00:11:35.89\00:11:42.07 Perhaps a bit too close. 00:11:42.10\00:11:44.59 Given the fact that the life of the father, 00:11:44.62\00:11:47.03 moral words and all 00:11:47.06\00:11:51.54 became replicated in the life of his sons. 00:11:51.57\00:11:56.25 And actually the two sad endings played out 00:11:56.28\00:11:59.32 on the stage of sacred history, it's the two of them together. 00:11:59.35\00:12:05.44 In controvertible proof of lifes law, 00:12:05.47\00:12:09.68 whatsoever a man sows that shall he also has to go. 00:12:09.71\00:12:16.39 That shall he also reap. What you sow, you reap. 00:12:16.42\00:12:20.26 No matter how merciful and gracious God is, 00:12:20.29\00:12:23.88 it is the law of life far too many times. 00:12:23.91\00:12:29.21 And so King David, 00:12:29.24\00:12:31.89 sowed his moral oaths 00:12:31.92\00:12:38.24 and his sons reaped the bay of a harvest. 00:12:38.27\00:12:41.59 I understand it doesn't seem fair. 00:12:41.62\00:12:44.80 But be reminded, children are never punished 00:12:44.83\00:12:49.89 for their parent sins, 00:12:49.92\00:12:54.95 but children too often follow their parents examples. 00:12:54.98\00:13:01.74 Open your bible with me please, 00:13:04.00\00:13:05.43 to tragic tale of humility, number one. 00:13:05.46\00:13:08.88 Second Samuel, find second Samuel in the Old Testament. 00:13:08.91\00:13:12.21 If you didn't bring a Bible, it would be in the pew Bible, 00:13:12.24\00:13:15.14 page 219, 2 Samuel, Chapter 13. 00:13:15.17\00:13:18.96 Tragic, right of the bad and out of the shoot, 00:13:18.99\00:13:23.97 simply because it comes on the king's adultery 00:13:24.00\00:13:28.47 and murder to secure the life of his neighbor Bathsheba. 00:13:28.50\00:13:33.33 Everything that follows for the rest of second Samuel 00:13:33.36\00:13:37.29 is the baleful harvest being reaped by his kids. 00:13:37.32\00:13:41.48 2 Samuel 13:1. 00:13:41.51\00:13:45.59 I'd be in the New King James Version. 00:13:45.62\00:13:47.22 Whatever translation you have follow along please. 00:13:47.25\00:13:50.15 "And after this Absalom" that's David's third boy. 00:13:50.18\00:13:55.94 "Absalom the son of David had a lovely sister, 00:13:55.97\00:13:59.04 whose name was Tamar." 00:13:59.07\00:14:01.08 Beautiful girl. 00:14:01.11\00:14:03.85 "And Amnon" that's David's first boy. 00:14:03.88\00:14:07.49 He's the crown prince. 00:14:07.52\00:14:09.17 "And Amnon" by another mother, 00:14:09.20\00:14:11.89 by the way than Absalom, so they're step brothers. 00:14:11.92\00:14:14.08 "And Amnon, the son of David loved her." 00:14:14.11\00:14:19.28 And seduced her and raped her and then discarded her 00:14:21.26\00:14:27.67 as man who use woman for pleasure alone, 00:14:27.70\00:14:30.58 so often do. 00:14:30.61\00:14:33.17 And Absalom, her older brother 00:14:33.20\00:14:37.19 is livid, rage. 00:14:37.22\00:14:41.40 But vengeance is both sweet and patient. 00:14:41.43\00:14:48.03 And so he waited two long years for the perfect moment 00:14:48.06\00:14:52.76 and then Absalom slewed 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.69 the crown prince of Israel Amnon 00:14:55.72\00:14:58.31 and fled in self imposed exile. 00:14:58.34\00:15:02.25 Go to the end of chapter 13 00:15:02.28\00:15:03.59 "So Absalom fled and went to Geshur" 00:15:03.62\00:15:08.38 that's the home of his grandfather, 00:15:08.41\00:15:10.60 who was King of Geshur. 00:15:10.63\00:15:12.15 "And was there three years. 00:15:12.18\00:15:13.50 And King David longed to go to Absalom. 00:15:13.53\00:15:17.30 For he had been comforted concerning Amnon, 00:15:17.33\00:15:19.90 because he was dead." 00:15:19.93\00:15:21.20 Oh, come on. 00:15:21.23\00:15:22.27 What does this doting father find in his third boy? 00:19:32.53\00:19:35.84 For a moment, let's be reminded of the original sin. 00:19:35.87\00:19:38.79 Keep your finger right here, we'll come back. 00:19:38.82\00:19:40.75 But Ezekiel, you got to see this. 00:19:40.78\00:19:43.33 They're twins. Lucifer and Absalom. 00:19:43.36\00:19:46.65 Watch this, Ezekiel Chapter 28, 00:19:46.68\00:19:48.67 that's page 578 in your pew Bible. 00:19:48.70\00:19:51.30 Ezekiel Chapter 28, lets pick it up in, 00:19:51.33\00:19:55.38 we'll pick it up in verse 11. 00:19:55.41\00:19:57.84 Ezekiel 28:11. 00:19:57.87\00:20:00.91 Where did Absalom get all this, 00:20:00.94\00:20:05.25 the vanity and insanity of pride? 00:20:05.28\00:20:08.86 Here's where he got them. Okay, chapter 28, verse 11. 00:20:08.89\00:20:11.62 "Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, 00:20:11.65\00:20:14.61 saying, Son of man, take up a lamentation 00:20:14.64\00:20:17.22 for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 00:20:17.25\00:20:20.62 'Thus says the Lord God.'" 00:20:20.65\00:20:21.68 Now it feels like we're gonna be talking 00:20:21.71\00:20:23.94 about a king who's alive at the time of Ezekiel, 00:20:23.97\00:20:26.24 but the moment two lines into this we know immediately, 00:20:26.27\00:20:29.81 this is no king living in the time of Ezekiel, 00:20:29.84\00:20:32.85 you'll see. 00:20:32.88\00:20:34.55 "Thus says the Lord GOD," verse 12 continuing 00:20:34.58\00:20:36.36 "'You were the seal of perfection, 00:20:36.39\00:20:39.18 full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.'" 00:20:39.21\00:20:43.12 Who's this? "You were in Eden". 00:20:46.25\00:20:48.79 Oh, it can't be anybody in the life of Ezekiel. 00:20:48.82\00:20:50.87 "You were in Eden, the garden of God." 00:20:50.90\00:20:52.72 Now, wait a minute, was it-- could it be Adam? 00:20:52.75\00:20:54.09 No. 00:20:54.12\00:20:55.15 Could it be Eve? No. 00:20:55.18\00:20:56.43 Somebody else was in Eden. 00:20:56.46\00:20:57.58 I wonder who that might be. 00:20:57.61\00:20:59.45 "You were in Eden, the garden of God, 00:20:59.48\00:21:02.34 every precious stone was your covering: 00:21:02.37\00:21:04.16 the sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, 00:21:04.19\00:21:06.16 and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and emerald with gold. 00:21:06.19\00:21:08.68 The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes 00:21:08.71\00:21:10.39 was prepared for you on the day you were created." 00:21:10.42\00:21:13.03 So this can't be God, this isn't talking about 00:21:13.06\00:21:15.43 an uncreated being, 00:21:15.46\00:21:17.12 it's a being who's been created, 00:21:17.15\00:21:18.20 who was in the garden of Eden and he's not human. 00:21:18.23\00:21:20.52 Who would this being be? Verse 14. 00:21:20.55\00:21:22.83 "You were the anointed cherub who covers," 00:21:22.86\00:21:27.26 code language, 00:21:27.29\00:21:29.24 for this single highest creaturely position 00:21:29.27\00:21:32.60 in the universe, 00:21:32.63\00:21:34.38 stationed beside the throne of Almighty God, 00:21:34.41\00:21:37.39 standing next to God himself 00:21:37.42\00:21:39.75 yet to be the highest of the high 00:21:39.78\00:21:41.42 to have that position, that's who you are. 00:21:41.45\00:21:43.65 "You were the anointed cherub who covers, 00:21:43.68\00:21:45.78 I established you, 00:21:45.81\00:21:46.98 you were on the holy mountain of God, 00:21:47.01\00:21:48.60 you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones." 00:21:48.63\00:21:51.72 Code language for the physical presence of God. 00:21:51.75\00:21:54.54 Yeah, you were there, verse 15 and guess what, 00:21:54.57\00:21:56.77 "You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, 00:21:56.80\00:22:00.07 till iniquity," the mystery, the iniquity 00:22:00.10\00:22:03.98 "was found in you." 00:22:04.01\00:22:05.04 Drop down to verse 17, here is the Achilles heel, 00:22:05.07\00:22:09.96 of Absalom and this being. 00:22:09.99\00:22:11.98 "Your heart was lifted up because of your," what? 00:22:12.01\00:22:16.39 What does it read? 00:22:16.42\00:22:17.50 "Because of your beauty, 00:22:17.53\00:22:19.27 you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor, 00:22:19.30\00:22:21.99 I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, 00:22:22.02\00:22:24.19 that they might gaze up on you." 00:22:24.22\00:22:26.30 Lucifer, Absalom, two princes, two immense tragedies, 00:22:26.33\00:22:30.06 brought down by the vanity and insanity of pride. 00:22:30.09\00:22:36.91 How did it God put it here? 00:22:36.94\00:22:38.70 They corrupted their wisdom for the sake of their splendor. 00:22:38.73\00:22:45.08 Because mark it down, ladies and gentlemen, self-- 00:22:45.11\00:22:47.16 the self delusion of self love is self destructive. 00:22:47.19\00:22:50.79 Destroys both the mind, destroys the mind and the soul. 00:22:50.82\00:22:55.98 Narcissus, ever heard of Narcissus? 00:22:56.01\00:23:02.85 Greek mythology told a tale about a young man, 00:23:02.88\00:23:08.25 a young man, who cause the death of goddess Echo 00:23:08.28\00:23:11.53 by spurning her love, 00:23:11.56\00:23:15.11 killed her by ignoring her. 00:23:15.14\00:23:19.00 So that the God Nemesis and you hear 00:23:19.03\00:23:20.68 we use the phrase, the word Nemesis. 00:23:20.71\00:23:22.62 The God Nemesis caused the young man to fall in love 00:23:22.65\00:23:24.69 with his own image reflected and mirrored 00:23:24.72\00:23:28.15 in the pool of a forest one day. 00:23:28.18\00:23:31.64 Put the picture on the screen. 00:23:31.67\00:23:32.93 He was taking a walk and he came across 00:23:32.96\00:23:34.73 the pool and he looked down-- 00:23:34.76\00:23:35.98 hey, who might that be? 00:23:36.01\00:23:39.38 And he fell in love 00:23:39.41\00:23:41.25 with the image reflected in the water. 00:23:41.28\00:23:45.89 So in love was Narcissus, with his own image 00:23:45.92\00:23:47.83 that he pined away beside that pond, until he died. 00:23:47.86\00:23:53.24 And because of that little myth, 00:23:53.27\00:23:54.85 we have a word in English called narcissism. 00:23:54.88\00:23:57.62 Let's put it on the screen, narcissism. 00:23:57.65\00:23:59.46 How does the dictionary define it? 00:23:59.49\00:24:01.25 "Excessive admiration for, or fascination with oneself, 00:24:01.28\00:24:07.85 self-love, the infantile stage of development 00:24:07.88\00:24:10.87 in which the self is the object of one's erotic interest, also, 00:24:10.90\00:24:13.87 the persistence of this stage into later years." 00:24:13.90\00:24:17.58 Vanity, narcissism, Absalom, Lucifer. 00:24:17.61\00:24:21.75 You and me doesn't matter self-love is self deluding 00:24:24.76\00:24:28.31 and it is always self destroying. 00:24:28.34\00:24:30.14 Always, it destroys us. 00:24:30.17\00:24:32.30 Because in the kingdom of God, 00:24:32.33\00:24:33.37 hasn't it ever been proven true, 00:24:33.40\00:24:35.24 pride goeth before a fall. 00:24:35.27\00:24:38.40 He who exhorts himself will be humble. 00:24:38.43\00:24:43.96 There is a fall Lucifer and Absalom, 00:24:43.99\00:24:45.31 the fall of you, the fall of me, 00:24:45.34\00:24:47.20 has so tragically and painfully confirmed 00:24:47.23\00:24:49.50 pride always goes before a fall. 00:24:49.53\00:24:54.92 Self love, self destroys by over reaching self. 00:24:54.95\00:25:00.54 And so there was war in heaven and there was war in Israel. 00:25:00.57\00:25:03.34 Absalom and his loyal troops, now march on Jerusalem, 00:25:03.37\00:25:06.97 just like Lucifer did, marching on his father in Jerusalem 00:25:07.00\00:25:10.07 where Lucifer father was. 00:25:10.10\00:25:11.74 They marched on Jerusalem. 00:25:11.77\00:25:14.43 David and his royal entourage flee 00:25:14.46\00:25:15.80 just before the rebel arrives. 00:25:15.83\00:25:18.29 And then get a note of this, this is awful. 00:25:18.32\00:25:20.83 To prove that depths of no shame 00:25:20.86\00:25:23.43 that self love boasts. 00:25:23.46\00:25:25.83 Absalom brings his fathers concubines 00:25:25.86\00:25:28.25 and in plain view of a gasping public, 00:25:28.28\00:25:31.46 he sleeps with all of them on the roof of the palace. 00:25:31.49\00:25:34.38 Now, there's nothing left of dad in my kingdom 00:25:34.41\00:25:38.46 that I do not possess. 00:25:38.49\00:25:41.04 So stupid is ego that he immediately gathers 00:25:41.07\00:25:47.57 his forces and pursuits King David. 00:25:47.60\00:25:51.84 Go back to where you had your finger a moment ago. 00:25:55.69\00:26:00.23 Chapter 18, David has fled to the East of Jerusalem. 00:26:00.26\00:26:04.81 They've crossed the Jordan, they're east of Jordan 00:26:04.84\00:26:06.64 and in that day, the forested woods were thick. 00:26:06.67\00:26:12.67 Not today, no, not today. 00:26:12.70\00:26:15.56 In fact read this, 00:26:15.59\00:26:16.77 this is chapter 18 pick it up in verse 18. 00:26:16.80\00:26:20.00 The two forces, father and son are battling. 00:26:20.03\00:26:22.08 "For the battle there was scattered 00:26:22.11\00:26:23.67 over the face of the whole countryside," 00:26:23.70\00:26:26.20 chapter 18 verse 8, 2 Samuel. 00:26:26.23\00:26:28.56 "For the battle there was scattered 00:26:28.59\00:26:29.65 over the face of the whole countryside, 00:26:29.68\00:26:31.07 and the woods devoured more people 00:26:31.10\00:26:32.88 that day than the sword devoured." 00:26:32.91\00:26:34.27 Isn't that something?
